- 0:12Hello friends, it's Shawn. Here it is a Tuesday.
- 0:17It is the 27th of February. Oh, we're getting close to the
- 0:21end of this very short little month.
- 0:23We are still going through the book of Ephesians.
- 0:26What a crackerjack it is and I have a cup of tea in hand.
- 0:33How could today get any better than this?
- 0:35I just don't even know. Friend.
- 0:37Things are good. So glad you could join in.
- 0:40Click on play and invite click. How many of you actually
- 0:44clicked? That's not even a thing anymore,
- 0:46is it? I reckon you have.
- 0:47Now I'm sure some of you clicked if you clicked.
- 0:50Good on you for clicking. The rest of you tapped or talk
- 0:53to Alexa or Siri, but here we are nonetheless.
- 0:55Whatever technological verb you use to get us here today, we are
- 1:00going to continue reading through this letter that Paul
- 1:04wrote to his church. And today, as we read the second
- 1:08chapter, we will read perhaps for me one of the most crucial
- 1:13passages, which is 8:00 and 9:00, which talks about God's
- 1:17grace being the active agent that saves us nothing that we do
- 1:21and these friends, is good news because I know I need all the
- 1:25help I can get, and it's great to know that I don't rest on my
- 1:28own efforts, but I rest in the grace field embrace of a loving
- 1:32God. So enough for me.
- 1:35Let's read it together. Ephesians Chapter 2.
- 1:50Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many
- 1:53sins, you used to live in sin just like the rest of the world,
- 1:57obeying the devil, the commander of the powers and the unseen
- 2:01world. He is the Spirit at work in the
- 2:04hearts of those who refuse to obey God.
- 2:08All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires
- 2:12and inclinations of our sinful nature.
- 2:15By our very nature, we were subject to God's anger just like
- 2:19everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy, and
- 2:25He loved us so much that even though we were dead because of
- 2:31our sins, He gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.
- 2:37It is only by God's grace that you have been saved.
- 2:41For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us
- 2:45with Him in the heavenly realms. Because we are united with
- 2:50Christ Jesus, so God can point to us in all future ages as
- 2:55examples of the incredible wealth of His grace and kindness
- 3:00toward us, as shown in all He has done for us who are united
- 3:05with Christ Jesus. God saved you by His grace when
- 3:10you believed, and you can't take credit for this.
- 3:14It is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for
- 3:19the good things we have done so none of us can boast about it,
- 3:23for we are God's masterpiece. He has created us a new in
- 3:28Christ Jesus so we can do the good things He planned for us
- 3:32long ago. Don't forget that you Gentiles
- 3:36used to be outsiders. You were called uncircumcised
- 3:40heathens by the Jews, who are proud of their circumcision,
- 3:43even though it affected only their bodies and not their
- 3:46hearts. In those days you were living
- 3:49apart from Christ, you were excluded from citizenship among
- 3:53the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant
- 3:56promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without
- 4:01God and without hope, but now you have been united with Christ
- 4:06Jesus. Once you are far away from God,
- 4:09but now you have been brought near to Him through the blood of
- 4:13Christ. For Christ himself has brought
- 4:18peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into
- 4:22one people when in his own body on the cross he broke down the
- 4:29wall of hostility that separated us.
- 4:32He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and
- 4:36regulations. He made peace between Jews and
- 4:40Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two
- 4:45groups together as one body. Christ reconciled both groups to
- 4:51God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward
- 4:56each other was put to death. He brought this good news of
- 5:01peace to you, Gentiles who are far away from him, and peace to
- 5:05the Jews who are near. Now.
- 5:08All of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit
- 5:13because of what Christ has done for us.
- 5:17So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners.
- 5:21You are citizens along with all of God's holy people.
- 5:26You are members of God's family. Together we are His house, built
- 5:33on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets.
- 5:37And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus Himself.
- 5:40We are carefully joined together in Him becoming a holy temple
- 5:46for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are
- 5:50also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his
- 5:54Spirit Jesus.
- 6:07You come with such rich gifts overflowing.
- 6:12Santa's got nothing on you. No bag, no sleigh could hold the
- 6:17grace, the love, the inclusion that you bring to us.
- 6:24And you don't only reconcile us to a loving father, but you
- 6:30reconcile us to each other. You bring us together as
- 6:34brothers and sisters in you, no matter our background, no matter
- 6:39our past. We are here, all members of your
- 6:44family, all members of your holy people.
- 6:50We are so grateful, Jesus, for everything that you achieve for
- 6:55us on that cross, when you sacrificed yourself for us, when
- 7:00you tore asunder all that would separate us from God.
- 7:05And now you present us flawless, loved, forgiven, and justified
- 7:11through you. You are just spectacular and we
- 7:17love you and we praise you. And it's all in your name that
- 7:20we pray. Jesus, I mean.
