- Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. Today on the show: Mahomes gets half a billion dollars from Kansas City, the Hurricanes are one win from a Cup, Aiyuk calls the Niners stupid, and Travis Kelce's wedding is apparently not a distraction. Let's get into it. Patrick Mahomes just signed an extension that pushes his total contract through twenty thirty-three at five hundred and four point seven five million dollars. Half a billion. From a team that went six and eleven last year. From a team whose quarterback tore his ACL. And honestly? That's the right call. Here's why. The Chiefs aren't paying for last season. They're paying for the next seven. Mahomes is twenty-nine. He's got three rings. He's the most valuable player in professional sports not named Lionel Messi. You don't let that guy hit the market. You don't let that guy even THINK about hitting the market. You lock him in, you build around him, and you figure out the cap later. Kansas City went six and eleven without him. He IS the franchise. The ripple here is what this does to the rest of the league. Lamar Jackson is extension-eligible. Joe Burrow's deal is coming up. Every elite quarterback's agent just bookmarked this contract and started drafting emails. The quarterback market just jumped again. And teams that were hoping to get their guy done for something reasonable? Good luck. Mahomes reset the ceiling. Again. Five hundred million for one player sounds insane until you realize the alternative is being the six and eleven Chiefs. Kansas City looked at that season and said never again. Can't blame them. In the Stanley Cup Final, Carolina beat Vegas four to two in Game five to take a three to two series lead. The Hurricanes are one win away from their first Cup in twenty years. Jordan Staal scored for the fifth straight game, tying the NHL record for longest goal streak in a Stanley Cup Final. The man is thirty-seven years old and playing the best hockey of his life in June. On the other side, Carter Hart has now allowed twenty goals in five games. Vegas coach John Tortorella has a decision to make in net, and honestly, it might already be too late. Carolina's got all the momentum heading home for Game six. Brandon Aiyuk called the Niners stupid this week. Just straight up said it. Said the team is mad at him because of how much money he got. Aiyuk has been frustrated for a while now, and the contract dispute has been simmering all offseason. But going public and calling your employer stupid is a choice. That's a quote that doesn't get walked back. That's a quote that gets you traded. San Francisco's got enough going on without a receiver lobbing grenades at the front office. This one's gonna escalate. Travis Kelce is apparently getting married July third at Madison Square Garden. Andy Reid was asked about it at minicamp and gave the most Andy Reid answer possible. Said Kelce's head is full of Xs and Os, not I do's. Said he's been there most of the offseason. When asked if he'd attend the wedding, Reid shut it down. Can't talk about it. The man coaches football and dodges wedding questions with equal skill. Darron Lee, the former Jets and Chiefs linebacker, was indicted on a murder charge in Hamilton County. He's accused of killing his partner, Gabriella Perpetuo, back in February. The medical examiner listed twelve different injuries including fractures and stab wounds. Prosecutors are deciding whether to pursue the death penalty. Awful story all around. Alaric Jackson of the Rams was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence. LAPD confirmed the arrest. He was released on fifty thousand dollars bail. The Rams haven't commented yet, but this is an LA story that's gonna get more attention. Couple contract notes. The Panthers locked up Jalen Coker for three years, thirty-five million. Dolphins extended center Aaron Brewer for three years, fifty-two point five million. And Sean Payton got a new five-year deal in Denver, which tells you the Broncos believe they're close. Joel Bitonio also retired after twelve seasons in Cleveland. Seven Pro Bowls, five All-Pro nods, started every game he ever appeared in. One of the most underrated linemen of his generation. He's got a real case for Canton. Here's my Hangover Take. The Knicks are gonna win the NBA Finals, and Game four is the reason. They were down twenty-nine points in the second half on Wednesday night. OG Anunoby hit a putback off a missed Brunson three with one point two seconds left to win it. That's not just a comeback. That's a team that refuses to lose in its own building. New York now leads the series three to one, and Game five is Saturday. The Spurs had that game. They had it by almost thirty. And they let it go. That kind of collapse doesn't just show up in the box score. It lives in your head. It follows you to the next game and the game after that. Wemby can be the best player on the floor every night and it won't matter if San Antonio can't close. The Knicks have the experience, the depth, and now the belief that comes from pulling off something like that. San Antonio's got time — they're young. But this series is over. Saturday night, Madison Square Garden. I think New York finishes it. That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
