- 0:20Welcome to the show.
- 0:21I'm Cameron Minter.
- 0:22I am your co-host and the wonderful Jessica Coffie, our Head Start director.
- 0:26Hey y'all.
- 0:27Is our host.
- 0:28What's going on Jessica?
- 0:30You know not much, just sitting here with you.
- 0:32I know right.
- 0:33Say it better though.
- 0:34Hey, sit and get it with me.
- 0:35You remind me of the Jeffersons.
- 0:36Why?
- 0:37The maid.
- 0:38Lord?
- 0:39Lord.
- 0:40She was always smart.
- 0:41Oh yeah, she was.
- 0:42Okay.
- 0:43I just really just killed my age right there.
- 0:44But I'm glad you picked up, Odie.
- 0:45That would be a good, yeah.
- 0:46We the same.
- 0:47I'm Cameron Minter.
- 0:48I am your co-host and the wonderful Jessica Coffee, our head start director.
- 0:49Hey y'all.
- 0:50Is our host.
- 0:51What's going on Jessica?
- 0:52Hey y'all.
- 0:53Is our host.
- 0:54I am your co-host and the wonderful Jessica Coffee, our head start director.
- 0:55Hey y'all.
- 0:56Is our host.
- 0:59We are.
- 1:00That's alright.
- 1:01Hey, I got a quick question now.
- 1:03You are the aunties of aunties.
- 1:06And you hold your title.
- 1:07That means I'm great.
- 1:08Yeah.
- 1:09You hold your title very seriously.
- 1:11I do.
- 1:12I do.
- 1:13So what has happened while the children were in your care that surprised even you, the
- 1:21greatest auntie of aunties?
- 1:24What has happened when the children have been in my care?
- 1:28So like children say the darnedest things, right?
- 1:32Well, yeah.
- 1:33Yeah.
- 1:34I know when they're free with auntie, you know, the auntie.
- 1:38There's no discipline.
- 1:39There's no discipline.
- 1:40No.
- 1:41Something has come out.
- 1:43Well, you know, there's...
- 1:48Okay, so I don't always filter the music that I listen to.
- 1:53And because, you know, it's me.
- 1:56I don't know.
- 1:57I didn't know I had to.
- 1:58It's auntie.
- 1:59So one of my best friends called and was like, so why is your nephew singing Cardi B?
- 2:09And I was like, oh, my bad.
- 2:14But you know also what they do?
- 2:19If it's something that they want that their parents don't get or say they're talking about
- 2:24bedtime and they'll be like, no, Titi said we could.
- 2:29They throw me into their fibs.
- 2:32Under the bus.
- 2:34Yeah.
- 2:35Yeah.
- 2:36So those are some of the things that...
- 2:38Yeah.
- 2:39I figured you would have some great stories because, you know, holding that title.
- 2:45I mean, that's a big responsibility.
- 2:47You got to be better than your siblings.
- 2:50No, they think with me, they think money grows on trees.
- 2:55Absolutely.
- 2:56Because you've taught them that.
- 2:57Well, I have.
- 2:59Don't!
- 3:00I do.
- 3:01Well, because I live away from my niece and nephews and even my friends' kids are my niece
- 3:10and nephews, right?
- 3:11You the auntie.
- 3:12So when we say niece and nephews, that means your friends' kids too.
- 3:16That's it.
- 3:17And I'm like, I want to reward them all the time.
- 3:24All the time.
- 3:25So they'd be like, yo, can we go get a blizzard?
- 3:28And I'm like, yeah.
- 3:30Well, why not?
- 3:31Right.
- 3:32What them grades looking like?
- 3:34What are those grades looking like?
- 3:36Well, I didn't do too well.
- 3:38Oh, you know what?
- 3:40You live in a hard life.
- 3:41Let's go get this ice cream.
- 3:42Oh my God.
- 3:43What?
- 3:44Because I know that you're going to do better, right?
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:47I'm a sucker.
- 3:48I'm gullible.
- 3:49And they got me wrapped around their finger.
- 3:52That's a good thing.
- 3:54That sums it up.
- 3:55Yeah, that's a good thing.
- 3:56I knew.
- 3:57But when they do misbehave, I go a little bit psycho on them.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:02But they know it's only talk.
- 4:04They know.
- 4:05Yeah, I know.
- 4:06That's how it is.
- 4:07I'm like, you're not supposed to do that.
- 4:10You're disappointing me.
- 4:11What's wrong?
- 4:12Oh.
- 4:13Say to a kid, use the word disappointment.
- 4:18And that just brings tears.
- 4:20So that's my magic word.
- 4:22And then you break.
- 4:23Yeah.
- 4:24I'm just so disappointed.
- 4:25And you look at them and I'm just so disappointed.
- 4:28So disappointed.
- 4:29You're so disappointed.
- 4:30Yeah.
- 4:31That's good.
- 4:32That's good.
- 4:33I'm glad to know you lived up to everything I thought about you.
- 4:37But you know what?
- 4:38I went home this weekend.
- 4:41It was I emceed a go red heart event.
- 4:50And y'all, my family has had they've never seen me be a professional.
- 4:56Right.
- 4:57Ever.
- 4:58So like, even me working here, they're like, we know you have a job.
- 5:05Suspense.
- 5:06You sus.
- 5:07Yeah.
- 5:08So it was a crowd of over 230 people.
- 5:13I'm emceeing and you know, I'm getting nervous because first I'm nervous because my family
- 5:20have never seen me be a professional.
- 5:22So you know, I went up to the mic and I was like, hey y'all, you know, talking and I'm
- 5:28telling the crowd, hey, my family has never seen me be a professional.
- 5:32They all laugh.
- 5:33And then I said, well, I'm not only nervous about that, most of y'all in this room knew
- 5:40bad Jessica.
- 5:41And then they broke out in laughter because what it was more than my I was like, I looked
- 5:47at my sister and I was like, who girl did you sell these tickets to everybody?
- 5:52We know like what happened.
- 5:55It's supposed to be a room of people that I didn't know.
- 5:59Wow.
- 6:00So yeah, that happened.
- 6:02And I was around my little niece and I just sported.
- 6:05Yeah.
- 6:06Well, that's a wonderful story.
- 6:09I'm glad you shared that because I saw the pictures and I saw the little clean professional
- 6:16version, but this is the real version that happened.
- 6:19My family, then we took a family photo.
- 6:23Like my mom was there, my uncle, my aunt.
- 6:25My dad didn't come because he was like, oh, hold up, that even is for girls.
- 6:30And I said, no, it's not, but you know, he don't like going around the house because
- 6:35he thinks everyone still has COVID.
- 6:37Right.
- 6:38Of course.
- 6:39Of course.
- 6:40But you know, he's your favorite anyway, as you have stated multiple times on this show.
- 6:45So oh, and then you see a co-sign?
- 6:47Y'all saw that?
- 6:48Okay.
- 6:49I co-signed, but I also was like, yeah, my sister's not going to hear this.
- 6:53So we good.
- 6:54I am his favorite.
- 6:55Wow.
- 6:56No, I said he is your favorite.
- 6:58That's what I said.
- 6:59Look at you, how you changed it around.
- 7:01You just, he's my favorite dad and my mom is my favorite mom.
- 7:07You see how that works?
- 7:08You're hoping that they don't listen, don't you?
- 7:10Yeah.
- 7:11I might tell them to listen to this one.
- 7:12Yeah.
- 7:13How about that?
- 7:14Well, with that, I think it's time for a Coffie Break.
- 7:24Okay guys, for today's Coffie Break, I want to remind you, always remember that motivation
- 7:29gets you moving, but determination keeps you going.
- 7:34What you got to say about that, Ken?
- 7:37I like that.
- 7:38Because you got to be motivated.
- 7:39Motivation, but see, that goes to show you that motivation won't get you there.
- 7:45Being excited about something won't get you there.
- 7:47Being, you know, glad about something being, you know, it motivated me to get up, but it
- 7:52did not sustain me to go through.
- 7:56Okay.
- 7:57Priest the word, preacher.
- 7:58I'm trying not to.
- 7:59But that's really good.
- 8:01Because people get excited about stuff, right?
- 8:03Yeah.
- 8:04You know, you see people jump on the bandwagon.
- 8:05You see people do stuff.
- 8:07You see people, oh yeah, that's all it.
- 8:09But determination is what's got to keep you.
- 8:12That part.
- 8:13Because after the fanfare wears off.
- 8:18You know, I've been motivated because I took about two, three months off working out.
- 8:23So it took a couple of weeks for me to get the motivation.
- 8:30Like I'm thinking about it.
- 8:32I'm dreaming about it.
- 8:33I'm preparing myself.
- 8:34I'm preparing myself mentally and physically.
- 8:37It's just going to have to be that determination.
- 8:41So I did a full week, a full week, but it was the determination that got me like up
- 8:50this morning.
- 8:51I got up at five this morning to go work out.
- 8:56And it was that determination.
- 8:58Because I wasn't motivated this morning.
- 9:00Yeah.
- 9:01Determination.
- 9:02Yeah.
- 9:03I wish I had some, but because I ain't determined to get up about nothing.
- 9:07You don't have no determination?
- 9:09Man, that's crazy.
- 9:10Because.
- 9:11Let me go to the store and buy some.
- 9:13Buy some determination.
- 9:15Right.
- 9:16Please make sure it's on sale.
- 9:18Oh my God.
- 9:20Okay.
- 9:21Jessica, what is going on today?
- 9:24I don't know.
- 9:25You have me laughing today.
- 9:27Today we have Ms. Lena Bergman.
- 9:30Licensed clinical social worker with Bluegrass Counseling and Trauma Services.
- 9:37And today, yes, so today we're going to be talking about therapeutic services provided
- 9:44to start children.
- 9:45So welcome to the show.
- 9:46Thank you.
- 9:47I appreciate the welcome.
- 9:48Yes.
- 9:49So first, the people want to know a little bit about you.
- 9:53So tell us a little bit about you, yourself, how you got into this background and all of
- 10:00that.
- 10:01Okay.
- 10:02So I am first a mom of five kids.
- 10:04Oh, girl.
- 10:05I know.
- 10:06I'm crazy.
- 10:07Five.
- 10:08Oh, give me ages.
- 10:09Yeah.
- 10:10Okay.
- 10:11She don't remember them.
- 10:12I have a five-year-old.
- 10:13I have an 11-year-old and a 12-year-old.
- 10:14And I have two 14-year-olds currently.
- 10:15Do you have any twins?
- 10:16They're not.
- 10:17I actually adopted two of them from foster care.
- 10:19So we have part of the year we have stair steps and part of the year we have the same
- 10:24age.
- 10:25Bless your heart.
- 10:26Bless your heart.
- 10:27It is.
- 10:28It's a fun time at our house.
- 10:29What was the youngest again?
- 10:31Five.
- 10:32She's sweet, thankfully.
- 10:34She makes the other one.
- 10:35I know.
- 10:36I don't envy you with them teenage years.
- 10:39I'm sorry.
- 10:40You go ahead.
- 10:41Tell us more about you.
- 10:42Okay.
- 10:43So I work for Bluegrass.
- 10:44I've been doing two years and I have been doing play therapy with our friends here at
- 10:49Community Action for about a year and a half now.
- 10:51Yay.
- 10:52Where are you from?
- 10:53So I live on the other side of Richmond.
- 10:54I'm in a little town called Paintlick and we have a farm there and we raise cows and
- 11:00horses and chickens and goats and sheep.
- 11:03Whatever else I bring home.
- 11:04Oh.
- 11:05Can I come to your house?
- 11:06You can.
- 11:07Yes.
- 11:08I'm like, I want to be a farm girl.
- 11:10No you don't.
- 11:11No you don't.
- 11:12I do.
- 11:13I'm a farm girl.
- 11:14However, I don't want to actually.
- 11:15Determination.
- 11:16Determination.
- 11:17Is that the word for the day?
- 11:18Go ahead.
- 11:19Make it a word.
- 11:20Well I want to have the farm.
- 11:21I just don't want to take care of the animals.
- 11:22Oh.
- 11:23Oh.
- 11:24I completely understand.
- 11:25Okay.
- 11:26Well come on out like in the summer when it's not muddy and it's about 70 and you have
- 11:29the fly.
- 11:30And the lemonade is made.
- 11:31All the good stuff.
- 11:32Yes.
- 11:33I will have you on out.
- 11:34I'll bring you out and we can get some stuff out of the garden.
- 11:35That.
- 11:36Some of the goats will play with you.
- 11:37Yeah.
- 11:38We can do that.
- 11:39That's what I'm talking about.
- 11:40That's the good part.
- 11:41That's the good part.
- 11:42Right now is mud.
- 11:43Let me have all the good stuff.
- 11:44Hey.
- 11:45Hey.
- 11:46We might need a record.
- 11:47Look who's talking at the farm.
- 11:48Right.
- 11:49Right.
- 11:50Yeah.
- 11:51Because we're going to need some chickens in this maze.
- 11:53Yes.
- 11:54I mean I'm feeling like I've got some money in the bank right now because we've got some
- 11:58chickens and they're laying eggs.
- 11:59Ching.
- 12:00Ching.
- 12:01Their insurance policy.
- 12:02Right.
- 12:03Right.
- 12:04Right.
- 12:05So can you tell us a little bit more when people say therapeutic services, what does
- 12:09that actually mean?
- 12:11So when we do play therapy, I think if any of our parents were watching us do a session
- 12:15with their child, they would be like, what are they doing?
- 12:18So it doesn't look like what you would think talk therapy would look like.
- 12:21We do talk to your children, but we're also on the floor with them.
- 12:24We're playing, we're interacting.
- 12:27We are playing hide and seek.
- 12:28We are playing tag.
- 12:29We are playing.
- 12:31A lot of them love to cook for us and we have got some really good chefs here connection
- 12:35and they are amazing with what they cook up for us.
- 12:39We are working on social interactions with them.
- 12:42We are letting them decide what they want to do.
- 12:45Sometimes if they're in a family, maybe with older siblings, they haven't got to kind of
- 12:51pick up what they do.
- 12:52They kind of are the followers.
- 12:53So they really enjoy getting to pick what they're doing.
- 12:57And we are just encouraging them and giving that one on one attention and they really
- 13:01love it.
- 13:03Our kids are ready to come see us.
- 13:05They are waiting at the door and it's a really a fun session.
- 13:08It's very positive.
- 13:10So how is that therapeutic?
- 13:13So how is that therapeutic?
- 13:14So we work with them.
- 13:16We sneak some things in.
- 13:17So just like if you're making something for your kids and you're trying to sneak in some
- 13:20vegetables and play therapy, we can sneak in some things too.
- 13:24So we can work with them on some like coping techniques.
- 13:28Today we were working on you smell the flower and then you breathe it out and blow the pin
- 13:32wheel and when you get upset, you can use it.
- 13:34And they were really enjoying that today.
- 13:37Oh yeah.
- 13:39And we also work on mindfulness.
- 13:41So when we do artwork, they're doing some mindfulness and we talk about what we're doing
- 13:45so they can kind of slow down and think about it and gather their thoughts.
- 13:50We might need that for adults.
- 13:52Sneaking stuff in.
- 13:53We sneak it in.
- 13:54Sneak it in and play.
- 13:56We sneak it into play.
- 13:57So they don't realize anything is getting snuck in there.
- 14:01And we also let the child lead.
- 14:02So if they want to do one activity, we could have something planned.
- 14:06If they don't want to do it, that's okay.
- 14:08We adjust and move around.
- 14:11And if something comes up in the family, so we've had some families that have lost some
- 14:14loved ones or something maybe they're going to be moving, we can address that in a way
- 14:19that the child is ready for.
- 14:20Oh wow.
- 14:21Those are some topics right there.
- 14:23Those are some topics there.
- 14:24But we don't put it in a scary way.
- 14:26We kind of smooth it in there to talk about it.
- 14:30That sounds like my emotional support chicken I have for the kids that can play with.
- 14:36Oh wow.
- 14:37Yeah, we have that.
- 14:38They're one of those too.
- 14:40So that's great.
- 14:41I mean really truly creative ways of getting in what they need is essential.
- 14:48And I applaud that.
- 14:51I mean that's just the greatest thing I think I've heard today.
- 14:54Right, right.
- 14:55Just getting it in.
- 14:56Because you know what, when you, so my background is nutrition so I understand sneaking things
- 15:01in the food.
- 15:02But I never thought about you know just that whole sneak this way of coping into play.
- 15:10That's great.
- 15:11It is.
- 15:12And we've noticed with our families with COVID a lot of things got roughed up and we've
- 15:15been trying to help pull those back together for some of those interactions.
- 15:19That's a good segue.
- 15:20We're going to take a break real quick and we're going to talk with Lena after the break.
- 15:27I had to make sure I was saying it right.
- 15:29I didn't even try to butcher the last name like Jessica did but hey you are listening
- 15:34to Look Who's Talking.

- 16:51That's commaction.org.
- 17:21Hey, how y'all doing?
- 17:27We are back.
- 17:28We are talking with Lena Bergman.
- 17:30Bergman.
- 17:31That's who we're talking with.
- 17:34And we're talking about before the break you had mentioned about COVID.
- 17:39Oh, the C word.
- 17:41Yeah, yeah.
- 17:43How that impacted some of our kids.
- 17:45How did that change the tapestry of our children?
- 17:50Look at there.
- 17:51Not the tapestry, okay.
- 17:52I like that.
- 17:53The tapestry.
- 17:54We've got a lot of little people with a lot of big feelings and they don't know how to
- 17:58express themselves.
- 17:59My, my, my.
- 18:00I mean, they were stuck inside.
- 18:01We got a lot of big people who don't know.
- 18:04We got a lot of big people that don't.
- 18:05Yeah, you're right because sometimes our parents don't know how to express themselves and then
- 18:09kids are learning from their parents.
- 18:10No, she didn't say that.
- 18:11No, she did.
- 18:12She said it.
- 18:13She said what she said, Kim.
- 18:14I'll stand by it.
- 18:15She said what she said.
- 18:16That's what's up.
- 18:17So when we're teaching these and I even told one of our kids, yeah, I was like, you know,
- 18:21if mommy's having a bad day, you can tell her you like smell the flower and blow it
- 18:25out.
- 18:26He's like, okay, because he said, I never get angry.
- 18:27Right, right, right, right.
- 18:28He was practicing it though, so he's right telling mom.
- 18:31I think that's great though.
- 18:34I know if one of my kids told me that, I think it would stop me right in my tracks and I'd
- 18:38be like, no, no, you're going to be like, who told you that?
- 18:41The teacher told you that?
- 18:42Nope, Miss Lena told you that.
- 18:44But you know what, I think it's great because I feel like when I was in school, you know,
- 18:50I'm young though.
- 18:51Oh yeah.
- 18:52Super young.
- 18:53Like that whole learning of emotions, I feel like I've learned more about that as an adult
- 18:59than what I did as a child.
- 19:01But you know, now in our classrooms, that's one of the first things they learn.
- 19:07Yes.
- 19:08I love Community Action.
- 19:09It has so many resources that you all have in your classrooms.
- 19:12So we were able to use it also when we were playing with the kids in the playroom and
- 19:16show them and they also are seeing it in the classroom.
- 19:20So that has been great.
- 19:21And I work with the kids of like, show me your mad face.
- 19:24And they'll show me that the movie Inside Out, because so many of them have seen it.
- 19:29They understand and they are able to connect that.
- 19:32So for say, if you see me about and about like I've got Inside Out on my badge, the
- 19:36kids will come up here, I'll wear shirts to have different feelings on them.
- 19:39They'll come pointed out to me and our Community Action kids are so good at that because they
- 19:44are recognizing what these faces look like and they're able to show us.
- 19:49And it's great to see and some of our friends that play with us, so clients that we're
- 19:54seeing, but also other kids in the classroom.
- 19:56So they are pointing it out.
- 19:57They are seeing it.
- 19:58So listen, great inside out to have me.
- 20:01I know it's still yes.
- 20:03Have you seen it, Kim?
- 20:04Yes, I have.
- 20:05Oh my goodness.
- 20:06And I was sitting there like, oh, there's something wrong with me.
- 20:10Right, right.
- 20:11Because we didn't get taught this.
- 20:13We were like, you better sit down.
- 20:16You better be quiet.
- 20:18I think, you know, Inside Out is a great movie to teach about emotions and things like that.
- 20:25It is.
- 20:26And I've given it to parents as homework.
- 20:27Go watch Inside Out too and talk about it with your kids.
- 20:29And they're like, what was that?
- 20:31Right, right.
- 20:32So many hidden messages.
- 20:34I was like, there's something wrong with me, not the kids.
- 20:37It's me.
- 20:38That's terrible.
- 20:39But anyway, the therapy is essential and it's so good.
- 20:51And so I'm like you, when you look at what we're doing now for children and we look at
- 20:56what wasn't done for us.
- 20:58It's night and day.
- 21:01Yeah.
- 21:02We missed out on something.
- 21:03It is.
- 21:04And we are getting parents now that are telling their children to be seen by us that are being
- 21:08proactive because they realize they did not have that in their childhood and they want
- 21:11to make sure that their child doesn't go through that.
- 21:13Not because there's particularly behavioral issues, because they just want to make sure
- 21:17that everything's being covered.
- 21:18So do you only come out during behavioral issues or how does the process work for you
- 21:22to come and work with children?
- 21:25So we will get a referral from our mental health coaches and they have a packet that
- 21:29the parents will sign on some consent forms.
- 21:32And once that's completed and we get insurance information or if it's going to be one that
- 21:36community action helps pay for, we get that information taken care of.
- 21:39They send it to us.
- 21:41We set up an intake with the parents.
- 21:43So typically the intake is the main time that they will have to talk to us because we know
- 21:48these kids are here at the center.
- 21:50After that, and essentially it's a kind of a hands off.
- 21:53So that way that we're not expecting them to show up, protect the kid here, there.
- 21:57So the parent can know that their child's receiving services, but they're not having
- 22:00to do that transportation or add another thing onto their schedule.
- 22:04So we're taking that barrier out of the way.
- 22:07What would you say to a parent who is very hesitant about their child getting services
- 22:13for whatever reason?
- 22:16I would just recommend them to be looking to play therapy and if they have questions,
- 22:20I'm happy to talk to them.
- 22:22When they see us around the center, like I said, we are normally in jeans.
- 22:25We are in some kind of fun t-shirt.
- 22:26I dressed up a little bit for today, but I am wearing my daughter's play necklace and
- 22:32I'm wearing inside out of a badge.
- 22:34But we really get down there with the kids.
- 22:36So we're not going to look like we're some very professional person.
- 22:40We're not going to be scary.
- 22:42All the kids have seen us in their room so they know it's a good thing to go hang out
- 22:46with us.
- 22:47But we don't call out anything on the kids.
- 22:50We're not going to say we have concerns with this.
- 22:53We're just going to go play with them.
- 22:55So what are some of the concerns that you all deal with in the classroom?
- 22:59So sometimes we see kids because we have issues at home.
- 23:02So maybe we have family separations.
- 23:03We have moving.
- 23:04We have some grief issues.
- 23:06Sometimes some big behaviors at home that aren't that the parents are feeling like they
- 23:09can't handle or that may not be big behaviors at home, but maybe in the classroom we're
- 23:15having some interactions with friend problems that we work with or just if they just kind
- 23:20of want an extra set of eyes on their child.
- 23:23So not every kid is getting speech therapy or getting other things.
- 23:27So we're doing that with them.
- 23:28And we also as part of our services, we have myself and then we have what's called a targeted
- 23:33case manager.
- 23:34We pull the child out.
- 23:35That way we have our two people with a child at all times.
- 23:39But they also offer case management.
- 23:41So it's not just the child.
- 23:43We offer support service to the parents.
- 23:45So say if a parent is having a hard time maybe with rent or needing to get some food assistance,
- 23:51they can talk to us too and we can see if we can find them some resources.
- 23:54So you had said something like moving.
- 23:57I swear I don't even recognize and we're talking children zero to five.
- 24:03How does something like that show up in the kid?
- 24:06They can start getting anxiety.
- 24:07We have some kids that have very big separation anxiety.
- 24:10Some of these kids have experienced trauma.
- 24:12Like something's happened to their house and they've had to move or they've had changes
- 24:16in their situations or maybe there was a breakup in the family.
- 24:20So mom and dad aren't together anymore and they're having to stay in different houses.
- 24:25So we're able to talk about that.
- 24:27But we see some separation anxiety.
- 24:29Yeah, that's real.
- 24:31Again with COVID too because they were just right there.
- 24:33Yeah.
- 24:34Yeah, that's real.
- 24:37I always whenever I think about mental health and with kids I think of Prince of Tides and
- 24:43it's a great movie but it's a really bad movie.
- 24:46But it just deals with not dealing with things.
- 24:50And how the children when they were little didn't deal with things and how it affected
- 24:56them when they became adults.
- 24:58I think what you're doing is being able to help them navigate that.
- 25:03At least acknowledge it.
- 25:06That's a big part of it.
- 25:07A lot of times we don't want to acknowledge what's going on and therefore we all have
- 25:13our different coping mechanism but the kid also has one.
- 25:18Like you said, we're noticing it's there and getting it taken care of before it starts
- 25:22growing like a big pimple for lack of a better term before it explodes and we're getting
- 25:27it under control.
- 25:28So even when those kids are getting older that they can kind of think back on some of
- 25:32those coping skills because we don't know what will happen when they get older, what
- 25:37other services they'll be with but hopefully they've got a foundation to keep them.
- 25:42And I like the fact that kids aren't afraid to talk about anything so the things that
- 25:50they are learning in the classroom, they will go back and tell their parents.
- 25:54They do.
- 25:55Right, that's why I said you're going to get in trouble.
- 25:58And they'll tell their friends' parents.
- 25:59I was hearing this morning about one little girl that was demonstrating what she's been
- 26:02learning and somebody else that saw her doing it.
- 26:05I was like that's great because that's spreading that around.
- 26:08Well and you also, at least when a child corrects you about your attitude or your behavior as
- 26:16an adult, you can't get mad at that.
- 26:18You can't really.
- 26:19You really can't.
- 26:20They might be right but go to your room, but you might be right.
- 26:24You know?
- 26:25Like I just think it's so important that we touch our children at such a young age because
- 26:33again I cannot remember being able to express myself in that way.
- 26:39I feel like I'm in a session right now because I'm just remembering, you know, we dealt with
- 26:44a lot of stuff and you know parents believe that kids don't know what's going on.
- 26:50Oh they know.
- 26:52But they know.
- 26:53They pick up on so much.
- 26:56And when you're in denial, and that's one of the questions I have, I'm not trying to
- 27:01talk bad about parents because you know I've been there.
- 27:04But when you're in denial of what's going on and then you say hey he's really dealing
- 27:10with this, how is that response with the parents?
- 27:15So I mean some of our parents are not, we've had some concerns with maybe some kids but
- 27:19their parents haven't been ready to go through with services and we respect that.
- 27:22We understand it.
- 27:23But maybe, and I don't know if that's possibly because they're thinking maybe that we're
- 27:27trying to call them out as a parent.
- 27:29Right, right.
- 27:30And we're not.
- 27:31I mean.
- 27:32But you know it's a thought.
- 27:34It's a thought.
- 27:35And I don't, I mean I'm a parent.
- 27:36I understand because even like my kids when they struggle with things, I'm like I know
- 27:40this I do this every day at home but we're still having some issues here.
- 27:43So it's okay to pull in that extra layer of support to help with these kids.
- 27:47And you're, I mean being a parent you've got so many other hats on.
- 27:51Nobody told you you're going to have to be like emotional support regulation, like all
- 27:55these extra things.
- 27:56So.
- 27:57And you didn't get a book?
- 27:58No we didn't get a book.
- 27:59You didn't get a book?
- 28:00You got a book?
- 28:01I didn't get the book.
- 28:02I didn't get a book.
- 28:03I mean I need a book but just knowing and it does help.
- 28:08We tell our parents you know like I'm a parent.
- 28:10I have struggles with my kids.
- 28:12You know it's not us calling you out.
- 28:13It's just an extra layer of support.
- 28:14It's part of your tribe.
- 28:15Trying to get some help while it's available.
- 28:19That's wonderful.
- 28:20Alright, alright.
- 28:21How can we get in touch with you if we got questions or what say you, what what?
- 28:27What what?
- 28:28So if you are interested in getting your child involved with us, any of the our mental
- 28:34health coaches can they have all of our referral information and I've got an email address.
- 28:40Bluegrass Counseling and Trauma Services is we have a website.
- 28:43You can reach us through there but right now the mental health coaches are the easiest
- 28:46way and we have very regular communication with them.
- 28:52So we stay in constant contact.
- 28:55That's what's up.
- 28:56You heard it here.
- 28:58This is how you can get in touch with Lena.
- 28:59Lena, thank you so much for being on the show.
