- 0:08What is going on, everybody?
- 0:12Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:37where tonight we have none
- 0:39other than the EMOM man,
- 0:41the Southland man, Brandon Luckett.
- 0:44What's going on, brother?
- 0:45Not too much, man.
- 0:46Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:48Yeah.
- 0:48Excited to have you on here.
- 0:49Heard so much about you.
- 0:51Um,
- 0:52the circle of people I hang out with
- 0:54seem to hang out with you,
- 0:56but this is the first time
- 0:56we've ever got to talk.
- 0:58Yeah.
- 0:59I've seen all your stuff and
- 1:00I'm wondering whenever
- 1:01you're going to have me on.
- 1:02So thank you so much for
- 1:03finally inviting me.
- 1:04Yeah.
- 1:05Yeah.
- 1:05So, um,
- 1:07Corey Leonard's already in the chat.
- 1:09I'm interviewing the burgers
- 1:11again tomorrow evening.
- 1:13Oh, gosh.
- 1:14My favorite family.
- 1:15So, yeah,
- 1:16we're going all Southland today
- 1:18and tomorrow.
- 1:18Love it.
- 1:19Love it.
- 1:21So let's talk about that first,
- 1:23the Southland group.
- 1:23How did that come about?
- 1:26Just a bunch of fit dudes
- 1:27wanting to get together and hang out?
- 1:29So, um, like,
- 1:31I don't know if you're too
- 1:31familiar with like my, my past, but, um,
- 1:36I grew up in Louisiana.
- 1:37I grew up in Baton Rouge, uh,
- 1:39went to high school there,
- 1:40went to LSU through undergrad,
- 1:43but I moved away and went
- 1:45to Houston for two years
- 1:46for graduate school.
- 1:47And then went to Oklahoma
- 1:48for two years to get, um,
- 1:50to do my residency.
- 1:51And then in 2021,
- 1:53I moved back home and that
- 1:55was after my last CrossFit
- 1:57games as an individual.
- 1:58And kind of decided to kind
- 2:00of back away from competing
- 2:02and just kind of focus on, you know,
- 2:04learning to run the
- 2:05business with my father
- 2:06that he and I run together now.
- 2:09And it was just it was a lot on my plate.
- 2:10And so I kind of backed away
- 2:11from competing.
- 2:13But while I was here in the
- 2:14first few months,
- 2:16two separate gym owners had
- 2:19reached out to me and they
- 2:21didn't like they hadn't
- 2:22talked to each other about
- 2:23anything about me,
- 2:25like putting on some kind
- 2:26of camp at their gym.
- 2:28And so I was like, well,
- 2:30y'all both reached out to me separately.
- 2:33I think it'd be really cool
- 2:34if we put on like a three
- 2:35day continuous camp where, you know,
- 2:38we got like some high level
- 2:40competitors to come in and
- 2:41help coach and run it.
- 2:43But we just invite anyone to
- 2:45come and learn and be in
- 2:47the environment of like,
- 2:48you know the community like
- 2:50we all love the competitive
- 2:51community and the
- 2:52competitive community of
- 2:53crossfit is kind of special
- 2:54in that like I think a lot
- 2:56of us are pretty open to
- 2:57giving advice like what
- 2:58works for us and what
- 2:59didn't what not and so we
- 3:02kind of like just kind of
- 3:03put plans together and like
- 3:06did our first one and
- 3:08in the winter of 21 or 22
- 3:10and then we've kind of done
- 3:12like a summer or fall like
- 3:14kind of in august and then
- 3:15another in december january
- 3:17february um every year
- 3:20since then and it's it's
- 3:21grown and we've gotten a
- 3:22little bit better at it
- 3:23we've got a little bit more
- 3:24value added into it uh and
- 3:26it's just cool to do you
- 3:28know um we try to provide
- 3:30a lot for the the campers in
- 3:31terms of you know like you
- 3:32know things that they can
- 3:33keep you know apparel gifts
- 3:36and things like that and
- 3:37then we try to provide a
- 3:38ton of value you know we
- 3:39have nutritionists and
- 3:40mindset coaches come in we
- 3:42have you know shelby neal
- 3:43and alexis johnson scott
- 3:44tetler like as many
- 3:46athletes as we can get in
- 3:47there like come on like
- 3:48just come and just share as
- 3:50much as you can with us and
- 3:52like let's all throw that
- 3:52down together for for three days
- 3:55So where I first heard of it
- 3:56was I documented Rudy
- 3:58burgers open in 2023.
- 4:01They got back from the winter one.
- 4:04Yes, sir.
- 4:05And they were telling me
- 4:07like what an amazing group
- 4:08of people it was and,
- 4:10and how cool it was to hang
- 4:11out with everybody.
- 4:13And that if I ever had the opportunity,
- 4:15I needed to come down and
- 4:16document like what goes on
- 4:18at one of those camps.
- 4:19absolutely absolutely yeah
- 4:21actually Lynette she
- 4:23started helping us run them
- 4:25like the last winter one we
- 4:27did uh in 2024 so like you
- 4:30know probably in February
- 4:31or January this year she
- 4:32came and helped run the
- 4:33whole thing with me um and
- 4:34so we have like a little
- 4:35small team of people who
- 4:36like organize it you know
- 4:37do orders and whatnot like
- 4:39order the stuff and like the food the
- 4:43you know make the schedule
- 4:44and everything and she was
- 4:44a big part of that this
- 4:46year and uh her her her two
- 4:49kids and and rudy are just
- 4:51the best love them yeah the
- 4:54story they brought back
- 4:54this year was um leah got
- 4:57her first muscle up yeah
- 4:59because of the southland
- 5:00camp and the and the girl
- 5:02is helping her shelby and
- 5:04alexis helping her out with
- 5:05the muscle up yes sir
- 5:08So yeah, super cool.
- 5:11I want to rewind because you
- 5:12went through a lot of the
- 5:13beginning of your story like really fast.
- 5:15Yeah.
- 5:17So you grew up in Louisiana.
- 5:19What made you want to be a
- 5:21medical physicist?
- 5:23And what is that?
- 5:24Yeah,
- 5:25so I'll start off with like kind of
- 5:26defining it in pretty simple terms.
- 5:29It's not that complicated.
- 5:31We simply work with radiation in medicine.
- 5:37The physics side of it is like the atomic,
- 5:39you know,
- 5:40nuclear physics the
- 5:41radiation side of it the
- 5:43medical is how it's used in
- 5:45you know in medical
- 5:46practice and there's three
- 5:47different kind of divisions
- 5:49that you can kind of like
- 5:49Broad classify them as and
- 5:51they're like that's
- 5:51radiation therapy where
- 5:53you're treating illness
- 5:54with radiation there is
- 5:56nuclear medicine where
- 5:58there's treatment and
- 5:59diagnosis using uh like
- 6:01radioactive traced um
- 6:04metabolic agents like maybe
- 6:06like glucose or something
- 6:07like that that is taken up
- 6:08in the muscles and you can
- 6:10image you know muscular
- 6:11function with with that um
- 6:13but then there's also
- 6:14diagnostic imaging which is
- 6:17the I would say like the
- 6:18the simplest of the three
- 6:20fields which is you know
- 6:21x-rays ultrasound mri
- 6:23mammography mri uh um cts
- 6:28So we work in diagnostic
- 6:30imaging and nuclear medicine.
- 6:32We wear several different
- 6:34hats from QA in terms of
- 6:37quality assurance,
- 6:37making sure that the
- 6:38systems are running as
- 6:39they're meant to run within
- 6:41regulations of the state
- 6:43and federal government.
- 6:45we work as like a liaison
- 6:46between the hospital and
- 6:48the governing bodies uh we
- 6:51we do a little bit of
- 6:52construction in terms of
- 6:53like calculating how much
- 6:54lead is needed in walls to
- 6:57block radiation from you
- 6:59know passing through the
- 7:00walls to the adjacent rooms
- 7:04we are radiation safety
- 7:06officers in terms of like
- 7:07you know making sure
- 7:08employees are safe we do
- 7:10calculations for fetal doses
- 7:12like we wear a bunch of
- 7:15different hats but it's all
- 7:16centered around radiation
- 7:18and medicine and and you do
- 7:20this with your your father
- 7:21yes sir so that's how I got
- 7:22into it so with the so is
- 7:25he a medical physicist as
- 7:26well and you just followed
- 7:27in the footsteps
- 7:28exactly wow yep so he got
- 7:33into it like real early got
- 7:34a master's in nuclear
- 7:35science um I i had to go a
- 7:38little bit more of a formal
- 7:39route as they kind of uh
- 7:41standardized the field you
- 7:43know a couple decades later
- 7:45so I had to get a degree in
- 7:46physics I had to get a
- 7:47master's in medical physics
- 7:49and then had to get a
- 7:51residency a two-year
- 7:52residency after my master's
- 7:54that I'd be eligible for
- 7:55board certification so that
- 7:56I could go and practice
- 7:58Um, but yeah,
- 7:59the only reason I did it was
- 8:00because my dad did it, loved his job and,
- 8:04uh, just wanted to be like him, you know?
- 8:07So it sounds like there's a
- 8:08lot of calculations and like formulas.
- 8:11So is, is it,
- 8:11you do have a deep math background?
- 8:14Yeah, I was pretty,
- 8:16I probably could have
- 8:17gotten a math major in
- 8:19undergrad and physics is
- 8:20inherently math oriented.
- 8:23Math is, I mean,
- 8:24you can go theoretical with math,
- 8:25but in terms of physics,
- 8:26most of it's very much
- 8:27applied to how things actually function.
- 8:29And a lot of those can be
- 8:30kind of mapped through
- 8:31mathematical equations.
- 8:33And so like, you know,
- 8:34if you've ever interviewed
- 8:35like Alexis Johnson, she's the math PhD.
- 8:37I'm a physics masters.
- 8:39They're kind of the same thing,
- 8:41just applied differently.
- 8:42Yeah, that was my next question.
- 8:44You guys were teammates last year.
- 8:45Does any of that come into
- 8:48play in strategy or is
- 8:50competition a completely
- 8:51different animal?
- 8:53So I would argue that Alexis
- 8:57Johnson's brain works much
- 8:59more on the mathematical
- 9:00side than mine does.
- 9:01I wouldn't say I'm exactly
- 9:04gifted and my brain doesn't
- 9:05work quite just naturally in that realm.
- 9:10I'm more of a broad scope individual.
- 9:12I'm not very detail-oriented.
- 9:15so when it comes to
- 9:15strategizing I kind of play
- 9:17by by feel and uh
- 9:19experience and not so much
- 9:21by like you know looking at
- 9:24the details of the numbers
- 9:25and the paces and like this
- 9:26is what I need to do to
- 9:27attain this you know I kind
- 9:29of I kind of have learned
- 9:31over the years just based
- 9:32off of feel and heart you
- 9:34know yeah and then
- 9:38So we're going to bounce all
- 9:38over the place just because
- 9:39that's how my brain works, right?
- 9:41Same.
- 9:43So last year at semis,
- 9:45I was there in Pasadena.
- 9:46You were with your Franco's team.
- 9:49And that was one of the most
- 9:51epic team battles I've ever
- 9:53witnessed in person.
- 9:55Yeah, it's pretty exciting.
- 9:56It was pretty much a
- 9:56three-way tie for that weekend.
- 10:01You guys ended up winning that overall.
- 10:04Yes, sir.
- 10:05What...
- 10:07Being a part of something
- 10:08that tight and that epic,
- 10:12do you feel that on the weekend?
- 10:14And when it's done,
- 10:15is there a different
- 10:16feeling than just like a normal comp?
- 10:20yeah absolutely and
- 10:21especially with team um
- 10:24there there are two
- 10:25completely different
- 10:26feelings after success as a
- 10:29team like with a team
- 10:30versus as an individual and
- 10:31I've been on like both
- 10:32sides of that um and
- 10:35winning on a team
- 10:36especially when like the
- 10:37race is that tight and like
- 10:38you know kind of that that
- 10:40you feel like all that
- 10:41pressure as an individual on your team
- 10:44like when the team succeeds
- 10:45like it's it's very
- 10:48exciting and like you're
- 10:49stoked for your team and
- 10:50like you you I would say
- 10:54like so like the way I
- 10:54explain it with team versus
- 10:56individual is I like on an
- 10:57individual basis when you
- 10:59win and you have success
- 11:02you have a lot of pride in
- 11:03what you've done but like
- 11:05the excitement is very minimal actually
- 11:09on the team side of things
- 11:10whenever you have success
- 11:11your your excitement is
- 11:13almost tenfold but like
- 11:16your individual proudness
- 11:19is is kind of uh minimized
- 11:21because like there's three
- 11:22other people that had to do
- 11:23their job as well and so
- 11:25you're more proud of like
- 11:26your teammates and you're
- 11:27excited with your team and
- 11:28so like that's it's
- 11:29completely different
- 11:30dynamic in terms of like
- 11:32how you feel post
- 11:33competition because like
- 11:35the excitement with team is is magnified
- 11:39The way you guys jumped on
- 11:40each other at the end of that competition,
- 11:42knowing you pulled off the win,
- 11:45the euphoria was palpable
- 11:48in that arena at that time.
- 11:50And one of my favorite
- 11:52memories from competition last year.
- 11:54Yeah, it was definitely memorable.
- 11:56Like I remember running to that,
- 11:58that worm and then crossing
- 12:00the finish line.
- 12:00Like, dude,
- 12:01those other teams were on our tails.
- 12:04And like, I think we,
- 12:05I think we were actually
- 12:05like not winning that event
- 12:07and going into that last
- 12:08set of squats or burpees.
- 12:10And so when you just see
- 12:11your teammates pull through and like,
- 12:13you know, exceed all expectations,
- 12:16like it's, it's amazing.
- 12:18It's awesome.
- 12:19Yeah.
- 12:20So your other teammates, Logan and Shaylin,
- 12:23are they different?
- 12:24You and Alexis have this analytical brain.
- 12:27Shaylin's a law enforcement officer,
- 12:29FBI agent, would run through a wall.
- 12:33Oh, 100%.
- 12:34Right.
- 12:35And then you have Logan.
- 12:37What are their personalities
- 12:38in comparison to you guys?
- 12:40Yeah.
- 12:42Man,
- 12:42Alexis and Shaylin were like this duo
- 12:45of just energy, right?
- 12:47like joking all the time
- 12:49like laughing all the time
- 12:50loud um almost like almost
- 12:53to the point of like
- 12:54obnoxious just like their
- 12:55energy was so high and then
- 12:57logan is like so quiet and
- 12:59chill and then I'm just
- 13:00like somewhere in the
- 13:01middle of of those two um
- 13:04groups but it was I think
- 13:06it was like a great balance
- 13:07because like we just we
- 13:08worked really well together um
- 13:12i think as a whole shaylen
- 13:15and logan and myself I
- 13:18think we were like a gritty
- 13:19team as a whole alexis by
- 13:22far had the most analytical
- 13:24brain but like I think we
- 13:26were all just so willing to
- 13:27suffer for each other and
- 13:29that made the the season
- 13:30really fun the perception of logan is
- 13:34And I have a best friend
- 13:35that is like this when we compete.
- 13:37Tell me where to be, and I'll be there,
- 13:39and I got you.
- 13:41100%.
- 13:41Yeah, that's the perception he gives off.
- 13:43Yeah.
- 13:45And he's an insane competitor as well.
- 13:48He's just been in the sport for so long,
- 13:51and I think his experience is so high.
- 13:55His depth of talent is massive.
- 13:58He shows up on game day,
- 13:59and he's just ready to go.
- 14:02so the big question is what
- 14:03the hell happened at the
- 14:04games I I don't think we
- 14:07ever told anybody what what
- 14:09happened at the games um
- 14:12Alexis either had flu or
- 14:15covid uh was extremely sick
- 14:20and I mean we didn't tell
- 14:21anybody because it didn't
- 14:22really matter like we had
- 14:23to go compete but um like
- 14:27she was on Dayquil she was
- 14:29on Nyquil she was on a
- 14:31z-pack like trying to get
- 14:32through this um like I
- 14:34walked into their room and
- 14:36she's in a sweater and
- 14:37sweatpants and the heater is on
- 14:41like yeah she was she was
- 14:43bad off and like her
- 14:45attitude through the whole
- 14:46weekend was just amazing
- 14:49and on top of that in one
- 14:50of our events she like she
- 14:52had like I mean she tweaked
- 14:54with like her shoulder and
- 14:56was struggling on like
- 14:57muscle ups and like every
- 14:58event after that
- 14:59And so, I mean,
- 15:00it was probably from the
- 15:01fatigue of being sick where she was just,
- 15:03you know,
- 15:04fighting for dear life the whole weekend.
- 15:07But I remember on the first event,
- 15:09which was the ski legless
- 15:11rope climb and overhead squat event.
- 15:14she and I were partners on
- 15:16the synchronized overhead
- 15:16squats and dude I remember
- 15:19on the first set of
- 15:20overhead squash it's like
- 15:21looking into her eyes and
- 15:22they were like they were
- 15:24big her her face was pale
- 15:26like her lips were like
- 15:28like blue and white and I
- 15:30was like oh no like this is
- 15:33gonna be such a long
- 15:35weekend for her but dude
- 15:37like she had so much heart
- 15:38and just fought the whole
- 15:39weekend that like I mean I
- 15:40couldn't have been more proud
- 15:42So let me ask this question.
- 15:45Your team suffers through a
- 15:46weekend like that, right?
- 15:47For someone who's willing to
- 15:50fight through all of that,
- 15:52does that make you closer as a team?
- 15:54100%.
- 15:55Yeah.
- 15:56Yeah.
- 15:57I think it's less so about
- 16:01the result at the end of
- 16:02the weekend and more so
- 16:05about what you see your
- 16:07friends lay out on the floor, dude.
- 16:10like I mean we could have
- 16:12taken a top five and if any
- 16:14of our teammates hadn't put
- 16:16their heart and soul out on
- 16:18the field like you would
- 16:18have been a little bit
- 16:19disappointed but we took it
- 16:22like a 12th or 11th or
- 16:23something and the the team
- 16:26fought so damn hard it's
- 16:28like dude you couldn't be more proud
- 16:31Yeah,
- 16:31because after seeing you guys at West
- 16:33Coast or whatever it was called that year,
- 16:37like, man,
- 16:38I thought you guys were poised
- 16:39to fight for the podium.
- 16:41yeah I think we would have
- 16:43had a shot but you know the
- 16:46team the events are are
- 16:48structured in a way that
- 16:49like weaknesses are showed
- 16:51and you know take one
- 16:54teammate who's fighting you
- 16:57know vomiting and you know
- 17:00fevers and everything and
- 17:01just aches and chills and
- 17:03you should do your best man
- 17:06I don't know what other sports you watch,
- 17:07but I've been watching the
- 17:08Olympic trials.
- 17:10Those people fight for one
- 17:11shot every four years.
- 17:14To trip in an 800 meter and
- 17:16to lose your shot at the
- 17:18Olympics because of a trip,
- 17:22it's so brutal.
- 17:23Sports are brutal.
- 17:25Yeah.
- 17:28You learn a lot about your
- 17:29character as an individual
- 17:31if you pay attention to it through sports,
- 17:33for sure.
- 17:36Yeah.
- 17:37So speaking of sports,
- 17:38we're going to go back again.
- 17:39Any sports growing up?
- 17:42Yeah.
- 17:43The biggest sport that I
- 17:44played was or participated
- 17:46in rather was wrestling for
- 17:48eight years from fifth
- 17:49grade all the way through high school.
- 17:53And that was like once I got
- 17:54into high school and got
- 17:55pretty serious with it,
- 17:56like that was everything I thought about.
- 17:59Um, I did run cross country as a freshman,
- 18:02quit that to just focus on wrestling.
- 18:05My senior year,
- 18:05I got pulled into the swim
- 18:06team like midway through the season.
- 18:08So I swam for half a season.
- 18:10But other than that, dude, I just,
- 18:12I just wanted to be on the mat.
- 18:15It's funny.
- 18:15Cause one of the first
- 18:16interviews I ever did was Chris Spieler.
- 18:19And he said that,
- 18:20that wrestling puts you in
- 18:22positions where you have to suffer and
- 18:26and get out or find a way
- 18:28out or just live in that pain.
- 18:30And that helped him so much
- 18:32in his CrossFit career.
- 18:33Yeah, 100%.
- 18:36I think wrestling is a
- 18:37unique sport when you look
- 18:38at it as a whole.
- 18:40You don't have to look at
- 18:41just a single wrestling match,
- 18:43which is extremely humbling.
- 18:47You can't blame anybody, right?
- 18:51And it's such like a...
- 18:54So it's like a gritty sport
- 18:55because you're legitimately
- 18:58hand-on-hand combat, more or less.
- 19:00You're not throwing kicks
- 19:02and punches or anything,
- 19:03but you're hand-on-hand
- 19:04combat with another individual.
- 19:06Just you two.
- 19:08And the mental battles you
- 19:10play with yourself of when
- 19:12the going gets tough,
- 19:13do you want to quit or do
- 19:14you want to fight or...
- 19:16When you're down on points,
- 19:17are you going to fight
- 19:18through the last round?
- 19:19Are you going to give up and
- 19:20just let the guy take it?
- 19:21Are you going to let him embarrass you?
- 19:23Are you going to pick yourself up?
- 19:27Take that out of it,
- 19:28which is a huge part of it, but
- 19:31the discipline you go
- 19:32through in terms of like
- 19:34cutting weight um which is
- 19:37massive like to go to bed
- 19:39hungry is really hard um to
- 19:42to cut water weight for you
- 19:44know 24 hours before a
- 19:45weigh-in and like your
- 19:47mouth's dry and you're in a
- 19:48sauna and you're barely
- 19:49sweating anymore because
- 19:50your body's just kind of
- 19:51got nothing left you can't
- 19:53sleep at night because your
- 19:54body's the hormones are so
- 19:56out of whack um
- 19:58And you gotta go, you know,
- 19:59you go weigh in, it's like, and you're,
- 20:01you're watching what you're eating for,
- 20:04for six months,
- 20:05like that kind of mental
- 20:07discipline translates over
- 20:09into everything after it massively.
- 20:12Um,
- 20:13and so like the mental side of it is just,
- 20:16if you like dive into it
- 20:18and like you're mentally tough human,
- 20:19like it just,
- 20:20it translates over all over.
- 20:22Um,
- 20:23and I think that's really cool about
- 20:24Ruffling.
- 20:26I don't think there's any
- 20:28kind of mistake that some
- 20:29of the best CrossFitters
- 20:30are wrestlers and gymnasts.
- 20:33Because both are forced to cut weight.
- 20:35Both are forced to suffer through things.
- 20:39And it just proves that
- 20:40you're capable of doing
- 20:41hard things on any given day.
- 20:44I think that you can
- 20:46extrapolate that to sports
- 20:48where you don't have to be
- 20:50a talented human to succeed.
- 20:54So there is a level of
- 20:56talent and athleticism in
- 20:58sports such as baseball, basketball,
- 21:00even football,
- 21:01where I wouldn't succeed at
- 21:03those sports because I'm
- 21:04not an extremely athletic
- 21:06or coordinated human.
- 21:08But take wrestling and you
- 21:11emphasize your strengths as
- 21:15an athlete and minimize
- 21:17your weaknesses as an athlete,
- 21:18just like we do in CrossFit.
- 21:20so like in wrestling I
- 21:21wasn't the fastest or the
- 21:22most powerful or the
- 21:24strongest guy but I had
- 21:26flexibility I had an engine
- 21:28and I had like a grittiness
- 21:29about me where like I just
- 21:30kind of never gave up and I
- 21:32made myself successful on
- 21:34the mat and uh like I think
- 21:37sports like that where you
- 21:38can take like an not
- 21:40necessarily most talented
- 21:41human and create like an
- 21:43insane athlete I think I
- 21:45think those are super cool sports
- 21:48Yeah,
- 21:49and those are the athletes I
- 21:50appreciate the most.
- 21:52That's the athlete I was.
- 21:53You know, I was that guy that,
- 21:55like I was a swimmer.
- 21:56I did other sports growing up,
- 21:57but swimming was my main sport.
- 21:59And, you know, I would get private lessons,
- 22:02and the coach would be like, man,
- 22:04you have all the heart and
- 22:05all the work ethic.
- 22:06If you just had the talent of X,
- 22:09you'd be awesome.
- 22:10You'd be an Olympian.
- 22:12I always got that, like, told to me.
- 22:14But you don't, and so you're probably not.
- 22:16Yeah.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:18There, there,
- 22:19there is a level in all
- 22:20sports of gift and talent for sure.
- 22:23Um, but I,
- 22:25I love the athletes who just
- 22:27work their asses off.
- 22:28I don't care how talented you are, dude.
- 22:29I want to see you just suffer through it,
- 22:32you know, put the work in.
- 22:33I love that.
- 22:35Yeah.
- 22:36I think that's why I like
- 22:36Colton Mertens is so popular, right?
- 22:38Yeah.
- 22:39I love him.
- 22:39I love his mindset.
- 22:40I love his vibe.
- 22:41Like what do you like kind of stands for?
- 22:43I think he's one of the most
- 22:45incredible athletes, dude.
- 22:47And another wrestler.
- 22:49Yep.
- 22:50Yep.
- 22:52So there is a really big
- 22:53correlation there.
- 22:55So was it always LSU for you
- 22:57growing up in Louisiana?
- 22:59In terms of like loyalty to sports?
- 23:01Or going to school there?
- 23:04No.
- 23:05Um, honestly,
- 23:07I wasn't the best student in high school.
- 23:11Uh,
- 23:11like I wasn't going to get a
- 23:12scholarship anywhere on academics.
- 23:15Um, my brother went to Tulane.
- 23:17He was incredibly intelligent human.
- 23:20Um,
- 23:20he actually just finished his
- 23:22fellowship in ocular
- 23:23plastics as a surgeon.
- 23:25So he's finally moving home
- 23:26after 16 years postgraduate.
- 23:29Like, uh, but, uh,
- 23:36I wanted to go to Tulane to
- 23:37be like my brother and I
- 23:38got waitlisted there.
- 23:40Probably only waitlisted one
- 23:42because he went there and
- 23:43two because I lived in Louisiana.
- 23:45And so like I ended up going
- 23:47to LSU on like in-state
- 23:49tuition just because
- 23:50honestly I had in high
- 23:53school I had no ambitions
- 23:54to be an academic and I
- 23:57wasn't a great student.
- 23:59And so it just was LSU.
- 24:03And then it clicked in
- 24:04college where academics
- 24:06became more important.
- 24:09And then you went to
- 24:11Oklahoma next or Houston, Houston.
- 24:14Yeah.
- 24:15So, uh, yeah.
- 24:16And in high school,
- 24:17I wasn't a great student.
- 24:18I just,
- 24:19I loved wrestling and focused on that,
- 24:20which is, you know, I, I, I say like,
- 24:23I only thought about LSU.
- 24:24Like there were some
- 24:25colleges who wanted me to go wrestle and,
- 24:28but looking past college and
- 24:31wanting to be a physicist
- 24:32like whenever I made that
- 24:33decision I was like there's
- 24:34no doing wrestling and
- 24:36getting a degree in physics
- 24:37like those two aren't gonna
- 24:39there's those aren't gonna
- 24:39pan out together um
- 24:41especially the way that
- 24:42like I just kind of was
- 24:43obsessed with wrestling
- 24:46And so after like,
- 24:47after wrestling in high school,
- 24:48after state, like the season was over,
- 24:50I just went and did a few
- 24:53out of season tournaments
- 24:54just to like burn myself
- 24:55out and like over train for them,
- 24:56crush myself and like burn myself out.
- 24:59And so I was okay like
- 25:01putting that sport away.
- 25:03And like that summer,
- 25:04like I had made the
- 25:05decision like just to
- 25:08switch the effort that I'd
- 25:11put in to sports in high school.
- 25:13to pour all of that effort
- 25:16into academics and so like
- 25:18that summer I went to
- 25:19physics camp at lsu for
- 25:21like a couple weeks uh like
- 25:23I had tutors every semester
- 25:26I studied with all the
- 25:27smartest kids in class
- 25:29like I didn't party I didn't
- 25:30drink I never went to the
- 25:31bars like I didn't do any
- 25:32of that I did crossfit
- 25:35analytical affiliate
- 25:36started coaching there and
- 25:37I studied for for four
- 25:39years and I would say like
- 25:41in in high school I was
- 25:42like a low 3.0 student um
- 25:45and I graduated in physics
- 25:47at lsu which has an insane
- 25:49physics program with like a 385.
- 25:52And then went to MD Anderson in Houston,
- 25:55which is the top one in two
- 25:59schools for medical physics in the world.
- 26:02So I definitely switched my
- 26:07mental state there of what
- 26:08I poured myself into.
- 26:12Yeah.
- 26:13It's so funny.
- 26:14I can relate to that.
- 26:15You did better in high school than I did.
- 26:16I was like a two, six, two, seven guy.
- 26:18And then end up graduating three,
- 26:22six with my undergrad and three,
- 26:25eight masters, I think.
- 26:27Yeah.
- 26:27I mean, it clicked in college.
- 26:30and it's not that like it's
- 26:31not that like you just
- 26:32started retaining
- 26:33information better so you
- 26:34just put in more time and
- 26:36like more effort like oh
- 26:37like if I can put in the
- 26:38time like I'll make the
- 26:39I'll make the changes and I
- 26:40like the work ends up
- 26:42paying off most of the time
- 26:43not always but most of the
- 26:44time uh your buddy corey
- 26:46says physical camp what a
- 26:47nerd he already knows I'm a
- 26:49nerd dude he talks to me
- 26:50all the time he knows I'm a nerd
- 26:52um and then just some a
- 26:54couple comments uh kipping
- 26:56at reels in here uh sucking
- 26:58on an ice cube ptsd uh as a
- 27:01wrestler yeah dude cutting
- 27:04weight and sucking on ice
- 27:05cube just to not have a dry
- 27:08mouth a cotton mouth uh and
- 27:11then cory says I do
- 27:13brandon's programming can
- 27:14confirm he loves to watch us suffer
- 27:18When it comes to programming,
- 27:20I'm almost more on the side
- 27:21of I like the mental
- 27:27suffering of difficult training pieces.
- 27:30And that's not to say you
- 27:31should beat yourself up every day,
- 27:33but whenever you can tell
- 27:34your body to just keep moving,
- 27:39it translates over into
- 27:40competition pretty massively, I think.
- 27:44Yeah.
- 27:45So we're going to get into
- 27:46that in a second because I
- 27:47want to talk about EMOM in more depth.
- 27:51So you graduate and you said
- 27:52you found CrossFit at LSU.
- 27:54Mm-hmm.
- 27:56Not at LSU,
- 27:57but while I was going to school.
- 27:59Okay.
- 27:59Yeah.
- 28:00So that's where you started.
- 28:02Did you ever think you were
- 28:03going to compete in that?
- 28:04And when did the competition bug start?
- 28:07So it's funny.
- 28:08Well,
- 28:08I got into CrossFit because of my
- 28:10brother.
- 28:10He was doing CrossFit in
- 28:12college with his roommate, Chad Becknell.
- 28:16And when I was wrestling,
- 28:18he would come home to visit
- 28:20and he would make me do
- 28:21some Metcons for wrestling.
- 28:24And I remember they would hurt pretty bad,
- 28:26doing wall balls and burpees and stuff.
- 28:29then after wrestling like
- 28:31there was a couple month
- 28:32period where I was just
- 28:34kind of exercising just
- 28:36aimlessly um I always
- 28:37exercise on my own like I
- 28:38love running I love
- 28:39calisthenics and stuff like
- 28:40that and uh he brought me
- 28:43over to do a crossfit class
- 28:44at red stick crossfit in
- 28:45baton rouge and it was
- 28:47kettlebells and double
- 28:49unders which I couldn't do
- 28:50double unders of course
- 28:52And it was like the whole
- 28:54vibe of like the energy of
- 28:56a CrossFit class was like, dude,
- 28:58I was hooked.
- 28:59Cause it was like, it was,
- 29:02it was like that competition feel.
- 29:04And like, after like I was spent,
- 29:06I was sweaty.
- 29:07I was like out of breath.
- 29:08Like I got beat by like
- 29:10everyone in the class.
- 29:11And I was like, I was pretty fit.
- 29:14And I was like, dude, I love this.
- 29:16I'll never compete, but I want to like,
- 29:18I'll come do classes.
- 29:20You'll never compete is what you said.
- 29:21Yeah.
- 29:22yeah I mean dude like
- 29:23whenever I made the
- 29:24decision to stop wrestling
- 29:25I was like all right
- 29:25competition's out like it's
- 29:27all school and work and
- 29:28like that's what I'm doing
- 29:29so like I'm just gonna do
- 29:30CrossFit to stay fit and
- 29:32like it fed that
- 29:33competitive bug that I
- 29:34needed and uh that next
- 29:38year I'm pretty sure I went
- 29:39to to regionals on a team
- 29:42and so for a few years I
- 29:44was on regionals as a team
- 29:46and in 2017 I went to
- 29:48regionals for the first
- 29:49time as an individual
- 29:52And a year later, you made the games.
- 29:54Yes, sir.
- 29:57So you make it to the games.
- 30:01I don't know.
- 30:03Was it 48 back then?
- 30:0540?
- 30:06I can't remember.
- 30:08It was 40.
- 30:08Okay.
- 30:11And you finished 36th.
- 30:13So not the ideal finish at the games.
- 30:15No.
- 30:17No.
- 30:18did that give you a chip
- 30:19that you wanted to do better or how did,
- 30:22how did that feel after that?
- 30:24Man, it's,
- 30:26that's a loaded question with
- 30:28everything that was going
- 30:29on with me that year.
- 30:31Okay.
- 30:32So I would say the immediate
- 30:36feeling after the games was like, dude,
- 30:38I was so upset.
- 30:39And it's so crazy to say
- 30:41because going into that year, I was like,
- 30:42all I want to do is qualify
- 30:43for the games.
- 30:44That is my dream.
- 30:45I want to qualify once and
- 30:46just say I made it.
- 30:48And I don't care if I come in last.
- 30:49I just want to be there.
- 30:51then you go and qualify and
- 30:53you come in like you know
- 30:55second to last because I
- 30:56think only 38 people
- 30:58finished the games that
- 30:59year and so really I was
- 31:01like third to last um and
- 31:04like you're comparing
- 31:05yourself all those people like wow I was
- 31:08i did terribly when you're
- 31:09the top 40 in the world you
- 31:11compare yourself to the top
- 31:1240 and you like do that
- 31:14like I was so upset I was
- 31:15like I'm gonna be back like
- 31:16I'm gonna I'm gonna make
- 31:17this different um I want to
- 31:19come like actually have some success
- 31:22And then a week later,
- 31:25I take boards for medical physics.
- 31:28A week after that,
- 31:29I take my finals for my summer classes.
- 31:34Failed my boards.
- 31:35Had stomach ulcers for a
- 31:37couple months just from stress.
- 31:41Tried training.
- 31:41I felt terrible in the gym.
- 31:44And I was like, F this.
- 31:46I'm so done with competing.
- 31:48Because I told myself I would never let...
- 31:51crossfit get in the way of
- 31:54of my work of my school and
- 31:56here it is like I failed
- 31:57boards so I was like screw
- 32:00it like I'm not doing this
- 32:01anymore took the year off
- 32:03passed my boards again like
- 32:04took them again like a few
- 32:05months later which was
- 32:07totally luck because there
- 32:09was some issue with the the
- 32:11testing system and usually
- 32:12I would have had to wait a
- 32:13whole year but I got to
- 32:14take them in december that
- 32:16year instead of waiting
- 32:17until august again
- 32:19passed them got into
- 32:21residency and moved to
- 32:23oklahoma and I was I was
- 32:24like okay like everything
- 32:25panned out and it's okay um
- 32:28but I still had no idea of
- 32:29like competing again until
- 32:30alexis johnson pulled me
- 32:32back in you know it's funny
- 32:35you say that because I was
- 32:36listening to a podcast
- 32:37today with missy franklin
- 32:40and katie hoff who are olympic swimmers
- 32:43and how they both feel like
- 32:46they never met their expectations.
- 32:49Missy Franklin,
- 32:50who won five Olympic gold medals,
- 32:52doesn't feel like she met
- 32:54the expectations she was meant for.
- 32:58We are stupid human beings.
- 33:03Five Olympic gold medals and
- 33:05it didn't meet your expectations,
- 33:07so you feel like your
- 33:08career is a failure.
- 33:09Yeah.
- 33:13I think that's the danger of
- 33:17setting expectations on results.
- 33:22Yeah, I think that's a great statement.
- 33:25um I don't think the goal
- 33:26should be the result I
- 33:28think the goal should be to
- 33:30pour everything you have
- 33:31into the task that you are
- 33:32doing and everything you
- 33:34have may not be 12 hours of
- 33:37dedicated time per day
- 33:38maybe four hours a day
- 33:41maybe an hour maybe 30
- 33:43minutes um and if you have
- 33:47expectations of winning you
- 33:49know or qualifying for the crossfit games
- 33:52with the ability to train
- 33:54one hour a day your
- 33:56expectations are results
- 33:57based however the best you
- 34:00can do with an hour a day
- 34:01may not be qualifying for
- 34:03the crossfit games and so
- 34:04like yeah results based
- 34:07expectations are a
- 34:08dangerous game in my opinion
- 34:11Yeah.
- 34:12It just coincided with your story.
- 34:15But Alexis brings you back
- 34:16in after this tumultuous
- 34:18time from the games, the ulcers.
- 34:21Did the ulcers go away?
- 34:22Did you need any extra help with that?
- 34:25Did they just...
- 34:26yeah I had to take some some
- 34:28like medication to kind of
- 34:29deal with that like I
- 34:30started graying in my hair
- 34:32like the stress I had from
- 34:34that was was pretty unreal
- 34:36I dealt with pretty bad
- 34:37stress and anxiety for
- 34:38quite a long time um and
- 34:40like it manifested itself
- 34:41physically in a lot of
- 34:42different ways from stomach
- 34:44ulcers to I mean graying
- 34:45hair which I mean 29 I got
- 34:47quite a lot of gray um
- 34:49to high blood pressure like
- 34:52all these different
- 34:52physical manifestations of
- 34:55stress and anxiety but uh
- 34:58that's crazy because you're
- 34:59one of the fittest people
- 35:00in the world with high
- 35:01blood pressure I took
- 35:02medication for for a year
- 35:06yeah stress is an evil evil
- 35:08monster yeah but um I think
- 35:11that that's also mitigated
- 35:13by like a lot of internal work
- 35:17you can get through that for sure.
- 35:19So if anyone out there is
- 35:20dealing with stress and anxiety,
- 35:21you can do a lot of work internally,
- 35:24get through that and like
- 35:24the physical manifestations
- 35:26kind of start fading away,
- 35:27which is pretty dope.
- 35:29yeah um back to alexis she
- 35:32she back in sorry yeah so
- 35:35she texted me in september
- 35:37of 2020 2020 no 2019 said
- 35:41hey we're going team um
- 35:44start training and that
- 35:45year like the open was in october
- 35:48And I was like, I got time.
- 35:50Why not?
- 35:51You know,
- 35:52like teams a little different off
- 35:53the train quite as much.
- 35:54The pressure is not as crazy.
- 35:56So I started training again, did the open,
- 35:58had my best ever open finish,
- 35:59which I think is partially
- 36:00because a lot of the high
- 36:02level competitors had just
- 36:03competed at the games and
- 36:05were not in like getting
- 36:07back into training yet.
- 36:08So I finished in like 13th
- 36:10or something in the world.
- 36:12And then we went to put,
- 36:14put a team together,
- 36:16went and competed in
- 36:16Argentina at the South land,
- 36:20South fit challenge or
- 36:21something in Buenos Aires.
- 36:23We won.
- 36:24So we qualified for the
- 36:25games and then COVID happened.
- 36:27So no teams went to go compete,
- 36:30but they pulled the top 20
- 36:32from the open to go individual.
- 36:35Bless you.
- 36:36Thank you.
- 36:37So I got to compete as an
- 36:39individual that year based
- 36:40off of my open score.
- 36:43Okay.
- 36:43Yeah,
- 36:44and they eliminated teams altogether.
- 36:46Yep.
- 36:48Was there any hope like when
- 36:50Rich was going to run the
- 36:51comp at Mayhem or were you
- 36:53guys holding out hope that
- 36:54that would still happen?
- 36:56Yeah.
- 36:56And then as everything kind of went away,
- 36:58then you just had to fall
- 37:00back into the individual at your own gym?
- 37:02Yep.
- 37:03Yep.
- 37:05So now you're back in individual.
- 37:08You finished 23rd in 2020.
- 37:12And what made you sign up again for 2021?
- 37:14Hmm.
- 37:19I had fun with it I think I
- 37:20had a little bit more fun
- 37:21with it this year that year
- 37:23obviously a better
- 37:24performance I was like okay
- 37:25like 23rd was better than
- 37:2736th um it was a good time
- 37:31to do it because I was
- 37:32still just in residency so
- 37:34like my schedule was super
- 37:35fixed um so like I knew
- 37:37that like outside of my
- 37:38responsibilities I could
- 37:40make training happen and uh
- 37:43yeah I just gave it another
- 37:44rip for another year before moving home
- 37:47because I kind of figured
- 37:48you know moving home I'd
- 37:49have to like kind of put
- 37:49the shoes away and and
- 37:51focus on work and so yeah I
- 37:54just stuck with it for
- 37:54another year so that 21
- 37:57year you make the games
- 37:58again you get to go in
- 38:00person you finish 27th any
- 38:05any anxiety or anything from that
- 38:09yeah so that was a I was
- 38:10actually pretty happy with
- 38:12that performance based off
- 38:13of uh the injury that I
- 38:16went into it with um so
- 38:182021 semis we had the
- 38:21snatch ladder at the West
- 38:22Coast Classic in in uh Las Vegas
- 38:27The first rep at 265,
- 38:30I tore my UCL in my right arm.
- 38:35So, like,
- 38:36that little tendon just came
- 38:38straight off the bone.
- 38:40I didn't finish the event.
- 38:41Like, I went off the floor.
- 38:43And I was like, dude,
- 38:44I don't know what I did.
- 38:44I can't remember that now
- 38:45that you say that.
- 38:47Yeah.
- 38:48Couldn't, like, every event.
- 38:50That was the first event of the weekend.
- 38:52Yeah.
- 38:53So, I had four more events after that.
- 38:55It was kind of...
- 38:57pretty scary like I mean I
- 38:58couldn't front rack a 95 I
- 39:00couldn't front rack a empty
- 39:01barbell much less 95 pounds
- 39:03for thrusters because
- 39:05bending my elbow was pretty painful
- 39:08couldn't do any rope climbs
- 39:09in in a warm-up because it
- 39:11hurt to hang on the rope um
- 39:13but then usually you're
- 39:14like all right I'll go see
- 39:15what I can do on this event
- 39:16you know if I have to come
- 39:18off the floor again it's
- 39:19fine but at least give it a
- 39:20go did well in that event
- 39:23um next day we started with
- 39:25a ruck so it didn't not too
- 39:27much there to be worried about
- 39:29But, you know,
- 39:30the chipper with 117 degrees
- 39:33was something to worry about.
- 39:35It may have taken your mind
- 39:38off the UCL for a moment.
- 39:40yeah but it's just you know
- 39:42it's like each event is
- 39:43like all right we're gonna
- 39:44take this event and see
- 39:44what happens um ended up
- 39:47qualifying um but training
- 39:50after that you know you're
- 39:52not gonna like train with
- 39:53the same kind of you know
- 39:55effort attitude that you
- 39:57had in competition so like
- 39:58I didn't snatch I didn't I
- 40:00couldn't front squat I
- 40:02couldn't really back squat
- 40:04not not heavy because
- 40:06holding the barbell on my
- 40:07back like getting my arm
- 40:10into that position hurt too
- 40:11bad couldn't overhead like
- 40:13so many things were just
- 40:14out of the question um and
- 40:17so like going into the
- 40:18games it was just like I
- 40:19hadn't touched so many
- 40:20things and so long that you
- 40:22know to finish 27th I was
- 40:24pretty actually happy with
- 40:26it's funny how the memories
- 40:27are flooding back now of
- 40:29you going through that
- 40:30moment because I was there
- 40:32and I remember you,
- 40:33you like getting helped off the floor.
- 40:35Yeah.
- 40:36And,
- 40:37and I had forgot all of that until you
- 40:39just rekindled that story and bam,
- 40:41there it is.
- 40:42Yes, sir.
- 40:43Wow.
- 40:44So, so you make it to the game.
- 40:46Yeah.
- 40:4627th is great.
- 40:48You survived.
- 40:49Yeah.
- 40:51Um, and is that after that games,
- 40:54is that when you started to
- 40:55become washed up?
- 40:57Yep.
- 40:59Yeah.
- 40:59Back home.
- 41:00Uh,
- 41:02moved back home, wasn't competing.
- 41:04My dad had gotten really sick.
- 41:06He got COVID at the games, was on oxygen.
- 41:09I had to move home from Oklahoma earlier,
- 41:12or earlier than I was supposed to,
- 41:14to start covering work that
- 41:17was getting pushed off
- 41:18because he couldn't do anything.
- 41:21um and so like I was done
- 41:24training done competing um
- 41:27kind of lost didn't want to
- 41:28do any kind of training
- 41:30where like I might see
- 41:31someone else's scores and
- 41:32feel bad about myself which
- 41:34is you know pretty you know
- 41:36not a great mindset to have
- 41:37like I was just comparing
- 41:38myself to everybody else
- 41:39all the time which is a
- 41:40terrible mindset to live in uh
- 41:44but yeah like it was it's
- 41:46pretty like not a I was
- 41:47pretty sad like losing that
- 41:49side of my life um and
- 41:51didn't really know how to
- 41:52channel that that energy or
- 41:55you know that mindset um
- 41:58until I started the mom company really
- 42:01So there's that and the
- 42:02Southland group all
- 42:03happened kind of at the same time.
- 42:05Yeah.
- 42:06And gave you a community again.
- 42:07It did.
- 42:08So let's talk EMOM before we
- 42:10get to this year.
- 42:11So you start this company
- 42:13and it's designed for
- 42:14people who don't have like
- 42:16all day to train.
- 42:17Yeah,
- 42:19that's what we founded it off of
- 42:20because that's where I was.
- 42:23I started training again.
- 42:25I would just go on like a
- 42:26two-mile run in the morning
- 42:27before I went to work.
- 42:29or I'd try to do a Metcon in
- 42:31the afternoon and I was
- 42:32just like comparing myself
- 42:34to people all the time.
- 42:36And then I just started
- 42:37doing as weird as it is,
- 42:3930 minute emoms where like
- 42:41I didn't have to compare
- 42:42myself to anybody else.
- 42:44I just compared myself against the clock.
- 42:46Like did I finish the workout or not?
- 42:48and they were insanely
- 42:50effective like I mean you
- 42:51could do pretty low output
- 42:53work for 30 minutes and
- 42:54within 30 minutes like
- 42:55you've done a ton of work
- 42:56it's just a longer time
- 42:57domain than we're used to
- 42:59um and I actually started
- 43:01feeling like I was getting
- 43:02in shape again and like my
- 43:03mental state was better um
- 43:06just because like I was
- 43:06doing something for myself
- 43:07again and like not
- 43:08comparing myself to
- 43:09everybody else and uh yeah
- 43:13it was just it clicked for me
- 43:16And so I started the
- 43:18Instagram account and was
- 43:19just putting up workouts
- 43:22for other people to follow.
- 43:23I was like, if this was working for me,
- 43:26maybe it'll work for other people.
- 43:28So we just started throwing
- 43:28out workouts on Instagram
- 43:31and it grew slowly at first.
- 43:34I never intended to sell it.
- 43:36I didn't want to sell it.
- 43:36I just wanted to give people
- 43:38some value that I found for myself.
- 43:40And I didn't want to be
- 43:42responsible for having to
- 43:43write us any kind of program for people.
- 43:46I didn't feel like I had the
- 43:47time or the bandwidth and
- 43:49just didn't want to.
- 43:52But it got to the point
- 43:53where we had enough people
- 43:54asking for daily workouts
- 43:56instead of just the one or
- 43:57two or three a week that I was posting.
- 44:00And I was like, okay, well,
- 44:01maybe we can try it out and see if we get,
- 44:03you know, 25 members or something.
- 44:07And so my brother-in-law and
- 44:10I kind of put the plan
- 44:11together and started
- 44:13putting it on Train Heroic.
- 44:14And we started with just
- 44:15like the 30-minute workout, you know,
- 44:19in the garage and out in under an hour.
- 44:22And that was,
- 44:23that was our mainstay program.
- 44:24We still have that as like our,
- 44:26and that is our most popular program,
- 44:28but it branched out, you know,
- 44:30into a 90 minute program,
- 44:31a competitive program,
- 44:32endurance and stuff.
- 44:34So we offer a lot more now, but our,
- 44:37our mainstay is still the
- 44:3930 minute session.
- 44:43Well,
- 44:43I know a lot of people who are doing
- 44:44it now.
- 44:45My nutrition coach is doing it.
- 44:48Corey talks about it all the time.
- 44:51One of my other co-hosts is
- 44:52dabbling with it a little bit.
- 44:55It's funny because the gym I go to
- 44:58It's not exclusively this,
- 45:00but they do a lot of interval work,
- 45:03which is essentially like EMOM.
- 45:05It's just EMOM 4 or EMOM 3 or whatever.
- 45:08And it brought a lot of fun
- 45:11back to working out for me.
- 45:13Yeah, 100%.
- 45:14Yeah.
- 45:16And my gym's owned by
- 45:18Christy Aramo-O'Connell.
- 45:20Yeah.
- 45:20Yeah.
- 45:21So that's what they do there.
- 45:23And I think it translates
- 45:24for the competitive athlete as well.
- 45:26You see Ariel,
- 45:27that's what she's doing now
- 45:28almost exclusively because you,
- 45:32you have to suffer to beat
- 45:33the time clock.
- 45:34Right.
- 45:35And so it translates to competition.
- 45:38Yes.
- 45:38And I love it because it's
- 45:40also like almost
- 45:40internalized competition.
- 45:43Yeah.
- 45:43You're like,
- 45:43it's like you against the clock, man,
- 45:44you and get your, like your head.
- 45:46And like, I love that so much.
- 45:49So if people are interested,
- 45:51they can just find you on Instagram.
- 45:52I know that.
- 45:53Mm-hmm.
- 45:54Emom Company.
- 45:55Yes, sir.
- 45:56Emom Co., right?
- 45:57The Emom Company.
- 45:59Emom Company.
- 46:00Yes, sir.
- 46:01And you're easy to find as
- 46:03well on Instagram.
- 46:04Yes, sir.
- 46:04You can reach out that way.
- 46:05And you have a website as well.
- 46:07Yes, sir.
- 46:09So there's that.
- 46:11Now I want to get to this
- 46:12year real quick because –
- 46:15you were washed up.
- 46:16You're doing your own thing.
- 46:18John Young says, there's no way.
- 46:21What brought,
- 46:22what brought about the shirt?
- 46:24Uh, honestly,
- 46:26whenever John Young called me washed up,
- 46:28dude,
- 46:29I had no intentions of competing as
- 46:30an individual.
- 46:32Uh, I was maybe going to do team,
- 46:34try to put a team together,
- 46:36but the end of the idea of
- 46:37competing as an individual actually, uh,
- 46:39legitimately scared me.
- 46:42Um, uh,
- 46:44It's sad to say that, again,
- 46:47I was just comparing myself
- 46:48to everybody else.
- 46:49The fear of putting in the
- 46:51time and the energy and
- 46:54going to compete and
- 46:55missing my expectation,
- 46:58my results-based expectation,
- 47:00scared the crap out of me.
- 47:05What would people think about if I failed?
- 47:09I don't want to feel like a
- 47:10failure and all this stuff.
- 47:12all this awful mindset that
- 47:14I had uh but something like
- 47:18something along the lines
- 47:18kind of switched and I was
- 47:19like I don't really care
- 47:21you know what the results
- 47:22end up being I just kind of
- 47:23want to see like what I'm
- 47:24capable of this year and so
- 47:28the the washed up shirt was
- 47:30more of just like a little
- 47:31bit of reminder um that like
- 47:37who who you know where where
- 47:39I was a year ago didn't
- 47:40really matter um where I
- 47:42was going really didn't
- 47:43matter either because like
- 47:44it didn't like I didn't
- 47:45care if anyone called me
- 47:46washed up like I don't mean
- 47:48anything to me dude it's
- 47:49like maybe I am but I'm
- 47:51gonna go see I'm gonna go
- 47:52see what I got you know and
- 47:55if I fail so what like I on
- 47:58wednesday I go back to work you know
- 48:01and so I had to put away a
- 48:03lot of fear and like that
- 48:04mindset just like constant
- 48:06comparison game and um for
- 48:10like for the first time I
- 48:11did it because I wanted to
- 48:13see what I was physically
- 48:15mentally and spiritually
- 48:16capable of and not just to
- 48:19you know maybe my dad will
- 48:21be proud of me if I qualify
- 48:22for the games or you know
- 48:24maybe my brother will be proud of me or
- 48:27People will think that I'm
- 48:29good at CrossFit if I do well at this.
- 48:32None of that matters.
- 48:34And that's where I'll be for a while.
- 48:35So during the season,
- 48:36you're killing the Open.
- 48:38You're killing quarterfinals.
- 48:40Is that like a slow build?
- 48:44You want to see what you can do,
- 48:45but it's almost like hurry up and wait.
- 48:48yeah it was unexpected the
- 48:51open performance was
- 48:52totally unexpected the
- 48:54quarterfinals performance
- 48:55was totally unexpected and
- 48:58it's we've been talking
- 48:59about results-based
- 49:01expectations like I had
- 49:02none and so my only
- 49:05expectation was like I want
- 49:06to see how much I can
- 49:07suffer on this event like I
- 49:08want to see what I can do I
- 49:09want to try to optimize it
- 49:12and so like I took all of
- 49:12that expectation of whatever out
- 49:15And, like, you know, as the season went on,
- 49:17I had more and more questions of, like,
- 49:19oh, dude, like, you're going to qualify.
- 49:21Or, like, what do you want to, like,
- 49:22where do you want to place at semis?
- 49:23Or, you know,
- 49:24you're going to go to the
- 49:25games or all this stuff.
- 49:27And I was like, dude,
- 49:27I'm not thinking about that.
- 49:29I'm thinking about the
- 49:30training session I have today,
- 49:31the training session I have tomorrow.
- 49:33Thinking about, you know,
- 49:34what I can do today.
- 49:36And, like,
- 49:36whenever I get to the competition floor,
- 49:37I'm not going to think about, like,
- 49:41what I it's like all I can
- 49:45do on the competition floor
- 49:47is absolutely throttle down
- 49:48on optimizing every event
- 49:49for myself I cannot control
- 49:52how fast the people in the
- 49:53lane next to me move and
- 49:56there are so many insane
- 49:58athletes and so many variables that like
- 50:01yes I am capable of
- 50:02qualifying but I have zero
- 50:04expectations of qualifying
- 50:06because I can't control
- 50:07that all I can control is
- 50:08like what's going on right
- 50:10now inside my body and mind
- 50:12and so that that's all I
- 50:13focused on every single
- 50:14event and um yeah it was
- 50:18stressful but it worked
- 50:20So for the first time you go
- 50:22to semis and you look
- 50:24across the way and there's
- 50:26Scott Tetlow and bill Leahy
- 50:29and max Krieg and all these
- 50:31dudes that like come hang
- 50:33out at your camp.
- 50:36Did that make the experience
- 50:37different this year?
- 50:39yeah um it was it was cool
- 50:43to to see so many people
- 50:44from our community out
- 50:46there um like very close friends and
- 50:52like whenever we first
- 50:54started the camp it was
- 50:55like you know I said we
- 50:56were doing this because a
- 50:58rising tide lifts all ships
- 51:00like if Scott Tetlow and
- 51:01Bill Leahy and Max Creed
- 51:02get better and we're all
- 51:03training together odds are
- 51:05that I'm going to get
- 51:05better as well and so like
- 51:07I'm not going to hide the
- 51:08things that have worked for
- 51:09me and they're not going to
- 51:09hide the things that have
- 51:10worked for them in terms of
- 51:12training and mindset and
- 51:13philosophy like we're going
- 51:14to share all that stuff and
- 51:16we're going to see what
- 51:16like see how good we can get
- 51:19And I think the results of
- 51:20like our tiny little region
- 51:24like speak for themselves.
- 51:26Yeah,
- 51:26Louisiana is now the hotbed for men's
- 51:29CrossFitters.
- 51:30I mean, dude,
- 51:31we had like over 10% of the
- 51:33competitors in the field
- 51:34were from our little town.
- 51:36Yeah, Pacific Northwest and Louisiana.
- 51:38Yeah.
- 51:39Those are like the two hotbeds right now.
- 51:42It's crazy.
- 51:42Yeah.
- 51:44So you get there.
- 51:47Was there ever a point in
- 51:48the weekend you felt
- 51:49comfortable that you were
- 51:51going to make the games?
- 51:52Or it went all the way up
- 51:54right until they announced your name?
- 51:56Yeah, dude.
- 51:57It was so stressful.
- 52:02I had to repeat to myself so
- 52:04much that the results are
- 52:05out of my hands.
- 52:06I've just got to do what I
- 52:08can and just let go of what might happen.
- 52:13And I never felt like I was
- 52:14in a position cause like
- 52:15going into the last event,
- 52:17I think I was in eighth
- 52:17place and I was only 20
- 52:20something points ahead of, of,
- 52:23of ninth and 20 something
- 52:25more points ahead of 10th.
- 52:29So if you make a mistake on
- 52:30that last event and.
- 52:33Which it proved could make
- 52:35people make mistakes.
- 52:36Yeah, yeah.
- 52:38Like Cole Grieshaber was
- 52:40like a place ahead of me
- 52:42and then ended up in ninth.
- 52:43Like that could have been me
- 52:45ending up in 10th or 11th.
- 52:48And so like I knew that like
- 52:49I had to be really smart
- 52:51and still had to really
- 52:52perform on this event and
- 52:55just let the chips kind of
- 52:56fall where they would.
- 52:59So you make the games...
- 53:02Now,
- 53:02how do you keep the mindset when you
- 53:04get to Fort Worth, which actually isn't,
- 53:07isn't a big trip for you now, right?
- 53:09Is it like six and a half hours?
- 53:12So we're going to drive up there.
- 53:13Um, how did, when you get to Fort Worth,
- 53:15how do you keep that?
- 53:17Not the, it's not about the results.
- 53:20Yeah.
- 53:21So I think in years past with training,
- 53:25you know, once you qualify for the games,
- 53:26it's like, oh, like,
- 53:27I've got to do all this
- 53:28extra volume and all this
- 53:29extra lifting and all like all this extra,
- 53:31extra.
- 53:32And this year is the first
- 53:33year I'm kind of like more
- 53:35listening and like trusting
- 53:37what I've been doing and
- 53:38like listening to myself,
- 53:39like my body and mind.
- 53:42and letting that tell me where to go.
- 53:45And yes,
- 53:47things have changed in terms of
- 53:48what I'm doing.
- 53:49A little bit more running,
- 53:50a little bit more cycling,
- 53:54different skills that we
- 53:55wouldn't see in semis, quarters,
- 53:58or the Open.
- 53:59So just making sure I'm
- 54:00touched up on those things.
- 54:03but not trying to worry
- 54:04about like you know I see
- 54:05all these other people
- 54:05doing these crazy workouts
- 54:06I got to do something crazy
- 54:07like that because like in
- 54:09years past I've always I
- 54:10think every year I've gone
- 54:11to the games I've just
- 54:12showed up like adrenally
- 54:13fatigued and beat up and
- 54:15and burnt out and uh
- 54:18because I'm like I got to
- 54:19do what I got to do more
- 54:21than everybody else like
- 54:22that's kind of silly like
- 54:24what you were doing before
- 54:25worked pretty well.
- 54:26And so try not to change that too much.
- 54:29And then once you get out there,
- 54:31it's another experience
- 54:34that I've had is you think
- 54:35you're superhuman all of a
- 54:37sudden at the games.
- 54:38And you kind of throw out
- 54:41all the things that you
- 54:42learned through the year.
- 54:42And like, OK,
- 54:43everything that I've done
- 54:44that's worked has got to change.
- 54:47So now I got to go out hotter, be faster.
- 54:49It's like, yeah, dude,
- 54:51the field's a lot faster.
- 54:52It's a lot different than it was,
- 54:53but you're not Superman now.
- 54:57You didn't build some insane
- 54:59engine you didn't have before.
- 55:00You're not stronger than you've ever been.
- 55:03you still have to know yourself.
- 55:06So you still have to run the
- 55:07race that you know you should run,
- 55:11and you can't worry so much
- 55:13about what people in the
- 55:14lane next to you are doing.
- 55:16That still holds true.
- 55:18So Friday Night Lights has been announced.
- 55:23Excited about that?
- 55:23Because that's kind of like
- 55:25home field advantage for you.
- 55:26You train in the heat and
- 55:28the humidity of Louisiana.
- 55:29It's not that different than Texas.
- 55:32Mm-hmm.
- 55:33You ready to go outside?
- 55:36Yeah,
- 55:36I'm excited that they're doing some
- 55:37outdoor stuff.
- 55:38I was hoping they would put
- 55:39some stuff outside,
- 55:41although I figured that if
- 55:42they did venture out,
- 55:44it would have to be morning or night.
- 55:46Otherwise,
- 55:46there would be a serious safety issue,
- 55:50putting people throttling down 100%,
- 55:52redlining in 105-degree weather.
- 55:55There would be some pretty
- 55:56serious injuries.
- 55:58um and I think you would get
- 55:59pretty bad performance out
- 56:00of the athletes so I think
- 56:01it's cool that they're
- 56:02doing that in the stadium
- 56:03at night um but yeah I want
- 56:05to see what they give us I
- 56:07think the coolest part is
- 56:08it's a 19 000 seat stadium
- 56:11it's free to the public
- 56:13yeah yeah that'd be cool
- 56:15like if it's packed that is
- 56:17going to be like one of the
- 56:18biggest crowds that
- 56:19crossfit has performed in
- 56:21front of yeah that'd be dope yeah
- 56:24So I'm so stoked for that one.
- 56:26I know it's going to be hot
- 56:27out there even for the spectator, but man,
- 56:30that's going to be a good one.
- 56:32So we're coming up on the hour,
- 56:34so I want to finish up this afternoon.
- 56:36You got to participate in
- 56:38Around the Whiteboard with
- 56:40Peter White and Bobby Bods and Wads.
- 56:42Yes, sir.
- 56:44And spoiler alert,
- 56:45if you don't know who won,
- 56:47plug your ears for about
- 56:48five seconds because this dude won.
- 56:50Okay.
- 56:53I've done that show uh I've
- 56:55been in that seat that
- 56:56you're in what was it like
- 56:58being on there it was fun
- 57:00dude he sent me like the
- 57:01questions that he was gonna
- 57:03ask last night I was like
- 57:04bro I got no idea about any
- 57:07of this and so I was like
- 57:10all right like let me kind
- 57:12of see what's up kind of
- 57:13learn about it a little bit I mean
- 57:15I had some ideas of some of
- 57:17the other questions.
- 57:18They're a little bit more
- 57:20intuitive and whatnot.
- 57:21And I had a decent idea of
- 57:24what had been happening.
- 57:25But honestly,
- 57:26I don't watch a ton of media
- 57:28with CrossFit.
- 57:29I don't read a lot.
- 57:31and so I was a little bit
- 57:33out of the loop so I had to
- 57:34jump in the loop real quick
- 57:35make some phone calls and
- 57:36like get some in like some
- 57:38scoop so uh yeah I I was
- 57:42not expecting to win that
- 57:44and have to go back in a
- 57:45few weeks yeah so I
- 57:47actually I ended up winning
- 57:48two matches I made it to
- 57:50the finals of my quarter
- 57:53and ended up losing to
- 57:54Colton by a half a point in
- 57:56the finals but
- 57:59I guess I'll behind the
- 58:00curtain when he sends me the questions.
- 58:03So Carolyn Prevo is my cohost.
- 58:05I've got another cohost, Jamie.
- 58:07I send them the questions.
- 58:08I'm like, guys, any ideas?
- 58:10And then we kind of like,
- 58:11and Carolyn was on the show as well.
- 58:13And then we just kind of
- 58:13brainstorm together how to
- 58:15kind of come up with answers.
- 58:17But at the end of the day,
- 58:18it has to be kind of like
- 58:19coming from you.
- 58:20You have to like feel it in
- 58:22order to get the points.
- 58:23Yeah.
- 58:23Yeah.
- 58:23But at least they can get
- 58:25the mind rolling if you're
- 58:26stuck on something.
- 58:28Because I had to do it
- 58:28almost three weeks in a row,
- 58:30the way my episode.
- 58:32And the stress of that was,
- 58:33it didn't go to ulcer level,
- 58:37but it was rough.
- 58:39Yeah,
- 58:39I was a little bit nervous going into
- 58:40that.
- 58:40I was like, dude,
- 58:41I don't know if I'm good at
- 58:42debating people at all.
- 58:43So it went well.
- 58:45I'm glad.
- 58:46I mean, we debate stuff on our talk shows,
- 58:48but I was so nervous on
- 58:50that because you're not in
- 58:51control and you have 60 seconds.
- 58:54Yeah,
- 58:55that's the hard part is making a
- 58:56point in 60 seconds and
- 58:58being coherent and getting
- 59:00your point across.
- 59:01That was sketchy.
- 59:03You sounded so laid back and
- 59:05I looked at the clock and
- 59:06he has plenty of time.
- 59:08That's what I should have
- 59:09done is just taking my time.
- 59:1160 seconds is longer than you think,
- 59:13but the 20 goes super fast.
- 59:14the 20th there and it's gone.
- 59:17Yeah.
- 59:19Like I got muted a couple of
- 59:20times on the 20, but yeah,
- 59:23that it was fun watching
- 59:25you and you'll be on in a couple of weeks,
- 59:27I guess.
- 59:27Yeah.
- 59:29We'll see what questions
- 59:29he's got for me now.
- 59:31I wonder if he's because the
- 59:34one week we missed because
- 59:35he had a kid like his wife
- 59:37went into labor.
- 59:39They had to postpone that.
- 59:40But with the games coming up,
- 59:43he's going to have a hard
- 59:43time filling slots.
- 59:45I'm guessing as they get
- 59:47closer to the games.
- 59:48yeah I almost almost didn't
- 59:50train today because of just
- 59:54things that I had to like
- 59:55doctor's appointments and
- 59:57podcasts so I mean
- 59:58obviously that one earlier
- 1:00:00and this one did like now I
- 1:00:02forgot about the doctor's
- 1:00:03appointment I was like man
- 1:00:04I don't know if I have time
- 1:00:05to train today but I hear
- 1:00:08it it works great that's
- 1:00:09what I did it worked out it was great
- 1:00:13Awesome.
- 1:00:14Well, Brandon, it's been a blast.
- 1:00:16I mean,
- 1:00:16I think I could talk to you for
- 1:00:17another hour, but we got,
- 1:00:18we got the history out of the way now.
- 1:00:20So next time you're on,
- 1:00:21we can just dive into stuff.
- 1:00:23But it has been awesome having you on.
- 1:00:25Thank you so much for your time.
- 1:00:26Thank you so much.
- 1:00:27We'll be down there.
- 1:00:29We'll be rooting you on.
- 1:00:30Yes, sir.
- 1:00:30Can't wait to meet you in
- 1:00:31person this time.
- 1:00:32Yeah.
- 1:00:33Awesome.
- 1:00:34Thank you to everybody in
- 1:00:36the chat for being here.
- 1:00:37We'll see everybody next
- 1:00:38time on Clydesdale media podcast.
- 1:00:41Bye guys.
