- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Rider Podcast, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Picture yourself as a third grader.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: It's May and you have two weeks of school left.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: It's warm outside, and all you can think about is a fun-filled summer full of sprinklers, fireworks, and ice cream.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Yet here you sit at this uncomfortable desk listening to the teacher droning on and on about some lesson in math or history or science.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: You'd rather be anywhere but here.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Well, we never quite escape this impulse of wanting to be done with our education.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: We move on to middle school, high school, most likely college, and perhaps even grad school.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: With every level, there's a sense in which we just want to be done so we can get on with our lives.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Well, this doesn't change even if you get to the doctoral level.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: If you ask any PhD student in the middle of their dissertation, they're likely going to say, I just want to be done with this thing.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: That's the kind of attitude most people expect from formal education, where we follow a prescribed path that somebody else has laid out for us.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Now, there's lots of benefits to formal education, and I was a college professor for 17 years, so I should know, but nothing compares to the curriculum that you create for yourself.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: If you want to grow as a writer or as an artist, you have to change your mindset about learning.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Learning is a privilege, not an obligation.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Learning can happen anywhere, not just in a prescribed institution.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Learning is the match that lights the fire of passion and purpose in your life.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: It's not the bucket of water that drowns it out.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: As Ernest Hemingway once said, we are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: We must take time to learn every single day.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Whether it's a book, a podcast, a course, a video, a mastermind, or some other kind of learning opportunity, it's absolutely vital that you make it a priority.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Even just a few minutes of learning every day can change the whole course of your life in just one short year.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: You might have a master's degree, but you never truly become a master.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: You're always an apprentice.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: So what are you learning today?
