- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:12episodes three forty three and three forty four. His name is Maria, The
- 0:18Great Shadow, Season Pirates, Trap and Feast of the Zombie Song, The
- 0:25Night Raids bell is the Sound of Darkness. I love these titles so much,
- 0:31y'all, I just do. I love them so much in these episodes,
- 0:38Well, Zombie Night's definitely going on my Halloween playlist. Number one,
- 0:44Number two, the concept of zombies that go and carry around a disco ball
- 0:49thumbs up forever. And number three, I really want to know why the
- 0:56hell's SANGI is always the one who has to get got and put on his
- 1:00zone somewhere. Welcome to spoil Me, Welcome to the show everyone. I
- 1:23am Natasha. Thank you so much to the One Piece crew for commissioning this
- 1:29episode. What's up? Ali all, guys, thank you, thank you,
- 1:32thank you. Brian is in the chat saying that he found me through
- 1:36the Wire series. Oh dope, but that is a show that so many
- 1:40people don't even know. We covered those of you who are interested in me
- 1:42in rashaan me in my very like fledgling understandings of race and its role in
- 1:49the United States. Like I got it on the broad level, but much
- 1:53of the nuance was lost on me. And I really think about like going
- 1:57back and rewatching it knowing what I know now, and I wonder if it
- 2:00would be like worse. But anyway, this is not a wire podcast.
- 2:02However, you should listen to that, except please be gentle with me because
- 2:07I didn't know I was doing my best. Bless my little baby heart,
- 2:13my baby leftist heart. So this episode we have not left, of course,
- 2:21Thriller Bark. I'm assuming Thriller Bark is going to be a thing now
- 2:24for a while. And I gotta tell you, guys, frankly, I
- 2:28am one hundred percent here for Thriller Bark being where we stay for the rest
- 2:32of the year. It is currently May Sat May second. I would have
- 2:38no problem with that. Thriller Bark is just such a beautiful, weird,
- 2:46little fucking treasure trove of horror tropes and I only my only regret, and
- 2:53Floria mentioned this as well, is that I wish that we had hit this
- 2:59in September as we started to get into Halloween season. Then it would be
- 3:05Chef's Kiss perfect. But I have a feeling this is the kind of thing
- 3:07that I wouldn't mind going back and putting the arc on when I hit September
- 3:14anyway, just as like a fun little background Halloween thing that's going on.
- 3:20I so, okay, I'm gonna start things off from the beginning of episode
- 3:27three forty three, because it turns out that Maria is one of the great
- 3:34Warlords of the Sea, and Maria is the one who is stealing everybody's shadows,
- 3:42which it's still unclear exactly what it is he's like getting out of this.
- 3:52For me, I feel like we're that's being kept from us purposefully.
- 3:58But the fact that he steals their shadow I wouldn't really have that much of
- 4:02an issue with, because who cares. It's the fact that they can't go
- 4:06out into the sun now that really fucking sucks. You've stolen You've turned them
- 4:12into vampires, except without any of the good parts of being a vampire.
- 4:15Doesn't seem like you get any superspeed, immortality, none of that. You
- 4:21just get turned into an albino in a sense who is just immediately wrecked by
- 4:30the sun. And I this dude, the only like sight we get of
- 4:36him are his eyes in the dark. At one point, he's like having
- 4:44a bad dream, and one of his little henchman says something about like,
- 4:47aren't those great? Aren't those the best kind? Or something like that,
- 4:51And as somebody who suffers from extremely detailed nightmares, can I just say fuck
- 5:00that forever? Nightmares I think are one of the most unfair aspects of being
- 5:11a living, breathing human being. We can have all sorts of things go
- 5:15wrong with our body, we can have all sorts of things go wrong with
- 5:18our mind in waking hours. And as much as that sucks and is also
- 5:26unfair, the fact that you can't even get away from stuff when you sleep,
- 5:31that it will continue to fucking haunt you. And this goes for just
- 5:36generalized anxiety to trauma. I really think that sleep being fucked with is like
- 5:49the akin to like hitting below the belt. Sleep should be off limits.
- 5:56We should as much as we suffer in our waking hour during the day.
- 6:00As a race of people, I really think nature could have just given us
- 6:08a fucking pass on sleep. How hard would that have been, Like,
- 6:14come on, just at the very least, if we're gonna have to dream,
- 6:18make it so that nightmares aren't a thing. Make it so that the
- 6:21dreams are at least neutral, if not outwardly pot like overtly positive. So
- 6:28anyway, this, uh, I'm getting ahead of myself. I said I
- 6:32was gonna start at the beginning. I definitely didn't. But okay, So
- 6:36Woofy is in the graveyard and I love and he's talking to the zombies and
- 6:42he's like, what are you guys all tooing out here? You guys,
- 6:54I'm gonna have a hard time getting through this episode because so much of it
- 6:59cracks me up so bad. So he's asking what they do out here?
- 7:03Well, zombie stuff mostly you know, getting buried, hanging out, rotting
- 7:11and stuff. Yeah, pretty much rotting and hanging out. Yeah, same
- 7:15here. And I love the fact that there are as they each speak with
- 7:21the subtitles. There's a bracket to tell you which of the zombies is speaking,
- 7:27and they have their number and letter that they're like labeled with to really
- 7:31let us know which of them it is. That takes it over the top
- 7:35for me into truly hilarious. There was just something about the way this whole
- 7:41scene was set up. This show often delves into the ridiculous, and they
- 7:46do a lot of humor, but this particular location feels like it is lending
- 7:54itself to a type of really overt humor that I'm not used to seeing from
- 8:03them, and I will I want it to stay. I want this to
- 8:09not be a phenomenon caused by the location. I want this to be a
- 8:16transition that one piece makes to being straight up comedy a lot of the time.
- 8:24It doesn't have to be that way all the time. But you know,
- 8:26there's a lot of comedy in the show so far that has been sort
- 8:30of like sensible chuckle, you know, just a very kind of low key
- 8:37comedy or slapstick type stuff. But there is between this and our introduction to
- 8:46Brooke, this is really funny. I am absolutely here for it. And
- 8:54when Lufy is like, you're not lying to me, are you, let
- 8:58me ask you something. Did demand with a long nose, a woman with
- 9:03orange hair, and a reindeer that looks like a raccoon dog come through here?
- 9:09Oh yeah, right, right right. We may have seen them,
- 9:13but we're not supposed to. Sorry, we can't say. We're all under
- 9:18specific orders not to share information about stuff like that with anyone. Sorry about
- 9:24that, And they begin chanting, we have our orders, orders, orders,
- 9:30orders, to which Lufy says with a crack of his knuckles, so
- 9:35you're not gonna tell me, huh, And then they immediately cave. Yeah,
- 9:41we saw. Honestly, it's the kind of thing that I want to
- 9:46be. If they're calling these these zombies pitiful and cowards, you know,
- 9:52I think, Zoro says something, and so does Frankie. I can't be
- 9:56mad at them. They're just p They shouldn't put themselves in harm's way just
- 10:03to save somebody else's secret. Do what you need to do to get by
- 10:07zombie friends. It's tough out there, and you know, do what you
- 10:13gotta do. And I love this. So Lufy says something about how they're
- 10:18his friends. He didn't do anything to them, did you, And of
- 10:24course all of these guys at first start to say that they didn't do anything,
- 10:28and again Lufy is like, I don't believe you. Well, this
- 10:35guy did something, and one of them says something about how he bit them,
- 10:43and then another guy chimes in with, well, we all bit them,
- 10:48and then they all get very agitated as they realized that yes, Lufy
- 10:52did hear that. So Robin steps in as Zoro pulls his sword, and
- 11:01Sanjie comes forward and Frankie gets his fucking guns ready, and then we hear
- 11:07sounds of fighting as the camera pulls out a great distance, and all we
- 11:13get to see of it is a bunch of birds like taking flight because of
- 11:18the commotion, So that's all we get of that. I am kind of
- 11:26like, I kind of am glad that these zombies got knocked around for what
- 11:33they did to our friends, but again, I also feel like it's the
- 11:37equivalent of beating on a cashier for enforcing a policy for the store. The
- 11:43store isn't the one, or the store isn't the one that's like offering its
- 11:48face to you, so you just take it out on whomever is directly in
- 11:52front of you, which doesn't address the problem and isn't really going to help
- 11:56things in the long run. And that poor cashier has now had a shit
- 12:00day. So I feel a little bit for these zombies because they're just sort
- 12:03of like the service workers of this island. It seems like well, ship,
- 12:07as you know, I was spoiled on, but that's what's revealed in
- 12:13the next episode is the way that this ship is set up. So then
- 12:20we go to Lufy and he's talking about the zombies being sort of pathetic and
- 12:26it was just so easy to beat on them that it almost wasn't any fun,
- 12:33and Zoro is saying that it's you can never tell when somebody that's going
- 12:37to be stronger is going to pop up, which for some reason Sangi takes
- 12:46as him acting as if he's scared, which is like, it's not even
- 12:50close to what he was saying. But of course this results in the two
- 12:54of them facing off and causing such a ruckus that another per catches up to
- 13:01them, and understandably, all of them think that this man is also a
- 13:05zombie, which you know, he does have some of the stitching and whatnot
- 13:09on him that the others did, and it's forgivable. At one point,
- 13:16Lucy again calls him an old man with serious injuries, and they're like,
- 13:20what are you doing. That's another zombie and the guy's like, no,
- 13:22your friend's right, and then they yell at him for not being a zombie
- 13:26and things just being confusing. So this guy is here to ask for their
- 13:37help, and it turns out his shadow was also stolen and that there are
- 13:45a lot of other victims as well, and that they are looking to be
- 13:48rescued so that they can all enjoy the sun one last time at least before
- 13:54they die. And when they ask, who did this to you? Is
- 13:58here somewhere on this island? This guy has a real nice dramatic moment before
- 14:05finally he says Maria, and Robin has a strong reaction. She clearly recognizes
- 14:13this name and explains to all of them that he is one of the seven
- 14:18war Lords. So I keep like, I keep forgetting just how much more
- 14:31of this Robin knows than any of them, And so yeah, she's the
- 14:37one that like is this is not the first time, of course, that
- 14:43she is recognizing names or faces that they aren't, But yeah, she says
- 14:48that he is. He has an even higher bounty than Loofy. So yeah,
- 15:01when Lufi is like are you sure? Yes, Geko Moria is a
- 15:05man of many mysteries, and Frankie is like, Okay, The thing is,
- 15:13if this man is so like high profile and so powerful, why is
- 15:20he on Killer Bark? Like this place is a dump? Why is he
- 15:24here? And this dude isn't sure. He can't give them an answer on
- 15:30that. The overarching motivation by Maria is unknown. However, he does say
- 15:39something about how Maria is out to get you too, since you were invited
- 15:43here or something like that, and Zoro is like invited, No, we
- 15:48weren't. And then he remembers that like sacrifice for the sea god thing that
- 15:54they came across and realizes like, oh, this was all a big lure
- 16:02essentially, And yeah, this dude is like, we're basically completely stuck here,
- 16:11Like we can't get go on the sea and try and escape the island
- 16:17because we were going to be exposed to the sun. How would we even
- 16:22manage to sail? Like, there's no way to do that. And once,
- 16:26just once, before I die, I want to walk under the sun
- 16:30to feel its warmth on my skin. And he starts crying, and we
- 16:37get some real toxic masculinity stuff here because he's crying for, in my opinion,
- 16:42a completely valid reason that I would also cry about. I would just
- 16:48straight up this is the thing for me that's always like the concept of becoming
- 16:52a vampire, all of the perks aside, the concept of having to stay
- 17:00out of the sun forever is a heavy price. I don't think i'd be
- 17:07able to do that. I love the concept of course of being immortal,
- 17:14having strength and speed. All of this stuff sounds great, But one I
- 17:21love to eat actual food, and I think losing that would be quite a
- 17:25blow. And losing my ability to just like lounge in the sun or enjoy
- 17:32a sunny day. Man, that's like a big part of the pleasure of
- 17:36life. I just don't see it. So I felt for this guy.
- 17:40Frankie's feeling for this guy as well. He starts like crying and saying how
- 17:44touching it is. He's been through so much. It's a really gut wrenching
- 17:48story. And in the midst of the sobs, you won't make me cry.
- 17:53But then Zoro calls him a cry baby, says he's too compassionate,
- 18:00and Sanji pointston says only ladies get to persuade people with their tears. Show
- 18:07a little backbone, Willia, look, Sanji shut up? All right.
- 18:19I will be keeping an eye out for Sanji growing teary eyed about something in
- 18:26the near future so that I can throw this in his face, because frankly,
- 18:30Sanji, that's unreasonable. And if you were relegated to this sort of
- 18:36fate, I feel like you would be. I'm not going to say that
- 18:41you would be here crying because you would obviously go and fight your own battle.
- 18:45But clearly this guy is capable of only so much. I am just
- 18:51unhappy with Sanjie's reaction here, so lufy, well, this does sound like
- 18:57the guy that we are at. So I am going to find him and
- 19:02kick his ass, and if that saves you, that's fine by me very
- 19:07much. A helping you is the side effect of the plan I was already
- 19:12going to carry out. And all of these people on the outskirts of this
- 19:18clearing in the forest all start to chime in and say thank you as well,
- 19:23because they have been hiding and listening to the whole conversation, just like
- 19:29eavesdropping eavesdropping offscreen. So when Sanji yells at them about that, one of
- 19:34them says, oh, we're sorry, freaky curly eyebrows guy. And I
- 19:41was kind of gratified that right after, in my opinion, being kind of
- 19:45a dickhead, the Sanji got mocked. I was here for it, just
- 19:49saying I can be petty like that. I think it's fine. So this
- 19:56is when we go back to the hogbacks what do you call it? Like
- 20:03secret lab? We had all of these guys getting approached in the hall.
- 20:10While they're spying through the door, They're being approached from behind by this weird
- 20:15dude with the skeletonish face. I say ish because he seems like he's got
- 20:22skin, you know, he's not a complete skeleton. And he has sliced
- 20:30the door in half and like shoved them through it. And they all are
- 20:34sitting there just talking with one another about who that was and what his deal
- 20:40is, without even noticing that they are now inside the laboratory and Hogback is
- 20:47like looming over them. And when he gets their attention Usup tries to reassure
- 20:55him that they didn't even see anything. You can let us go, it's
- 20:59no big deal, And of course Up has to ruin it by being like,
- 21:03we didn't even see the zombie. You were making husup? Why are
- 21:08you like this? So I'm sure he goes on to say that, like,
- 21:17maybe you've figured out one of my secrets, but the night hunt is
- 21:21going to begin in just a few minutes, so you're too late to change
- 21:26anything. And of course our friends are like, well what is the night
- 21:32hunt? And he's like very dramatic with this, You guys whoa unto those
- 21:38who travel at this hour, no intruders shall survive the night hunt. And
- 21:48he says this. We get into another like interstitial where you know, it's
- 21:53a commercial break and whatnot, and we come back to him still fucking posturing.
- 22:00This dude is so much he's not answering their question for now. We're
- 22:07going to the Invisible Man, who I do kind of appreciate that. Eventually
- 22:14the crowd that like seemingly adores him begins just chanting pervert at him, which
- 22:22I don't know, I just sort of like appreciated that. But all of
- 22:27the zombies, the sort of like the visual joke about how our crew defeated
- 22:37all of the zombies is that when you go to the graveyard, they are
- 22:42now all face first in the dirt with their legs in the air, like
- 22:49little plastic dolls that have just been buried from the waist up upside down.
- 22:56And this imagery. I don't know why, but it's one thing when our
- 23:03friends have just finished the fight and they're walking away and we see the zombies
- 23:07like this, But when we cut back to the Invisible Man and he is
- 23:15coming into the clearing and sees that they are still just chilling like this,
- 23:19that was really funny to me, and I expected him to be like a
- 23:23little bit more. I don't know if like disgusted is the right word,
- 23:30but you know what I mean, just kind of like, oh wow,
- 23:33this is so embarrassing. But instead he's just like, well, you can't
- 23:37do the night hunt if you're still buried, now, can you? And
- 23:41seems pretty calm about the whole thing, which leads me to believe that maybe
- 23:48he is used to these guys all collectively fucking up fairly often, and so
- 23:56Invisible man, his name is Absalom. I don't know if I'm going to
- 24:00be able to remember that, so forgive me, guys if I have to
- 24:03ask you, you know, or get reminders. Invisible Man, I feel
- 24:08like it's pretty adequate to what we've got. But also, eventually we do
- 24:14see him, it seems like he can control whether he's invisible, so I
- 24:21don't know if I'll feel like it makes sense to keep calling him that in
- 24:25the scenes where we can now see him and he's trying to hype his guys
- 24:30up by being like, you zombies, are you know, impossible to defeat?
- 24:37You can't die. Every time you get knocked down, you get back
- 24:42up again. Ain't nothing going to keep you down. I'm so sorry,
- 24:47guys. I know that that's it's going to be in my head now.
- 24:52But he's trying to hype them up, and they are really kind of not
- 24:56having it. Like one of them just looks down and is like yeah,
- 25:00and then they all go in this very morose sort of way. We know,
- 25:06like they really are not that hype about being zombies. And I mean,
- 25:12I don't know that I would be either. I don't think and I'm
- 25:18actually not sure about this. I'm gonna assume if you're a zombie that you
- 25:23can't be out during daylight. And I'm saying this purely because of a general
- 25:29trope of this sort of zombie like raising out of the grave, punching through
- 25:36the dirt of the graveyard. Obviously, we've got entire genres of shows and
- 25:41movies where zombies absolutely can travel in the light. But I will be interested
- 25:45to see if that's actually the case here, Like, will we have daylight
- 25:51scenes and see these zombies out in the light. It feels like thriller Bark
- 25:56is in a sort of perpetual twilight and darkness, And I don't know.
- 26:03I'm just kind of keeping my eyes open for that. This is when they
- 26:07all begin to cheer him. They're calling him leader. And then eventually,
- 26:11like I said, transition to pervert, which is hilarious. He begins to
- 26:17grow visible and he is so weird looking. He's got like the nose of
- 26:26a lion's muzzle. I'm not sure if it's a lion, but it's like
- 26:30a large cat, and otherwise seems to look pretty much like a dude,
- 26:37like a regular dude. And then we get this really surprising sequence. You
- 26:45know, I had thought in the last section that we had kind of seen
- 26:49all the major players that we were going to be dealing with. But we
- 26:53get this bit where a bunch of ghosts all over the island, you know,
- 26:59the saying hut. They are flying towards this one open window, and
- 27:07there is an odd creature standing in the window waving them in. I think
- 27:15it says his name is Kumasi. He looks like a patched teddy bear like
- 27:21patch many many times bandages. He has sort of mask over his mouth,
- 27:27like what a surgeon would wear, except he's doing it in the real boomer
- 27:33wearing a mask during COVID where it's not covering his nose, it's only covering
- 27:37his mouth. It's a weird thing. And he is ushering them into the
- 27:45window, and all of the ghosts travel forward into a woman and she is
- 28:00sitting there as if when she doesn't have these ghosts like occupying her, she
- 28:07doesn't have any strength. There's a sort of sense that she is made up
- 28:12of them somehow. I don't really know how that would work. But this
- 28:18little stuffed bear is her servant, and he hands her this little like I
- 28:27guess Kane, and she hands up. Her name is Pirona. I'm not
- 28:33positive of saying that right, but she keeps like getting on his case about
- 28:38how ugly he is and that she doesn't want him to talk to her,
- 28:45and says something like either be cute or shut up is the way it goes
- 28:51in the dub, which honestly, a part of me kind of got that
- 28:55because I really enjoy beauty as well. But she has got the e girl
- 29:02hair, you know, the giant curling pigtails coming off each side of her
- 29:10head, and I think they're sort of a pink color and a very gothic
- 29:14Lolita sort of look happening. It's a pretty fun outfit to be honest,
- 29:19like, if I were going to cosplay a character, I would probably do
- 29:23her because it's just a fun look and it would be pretty easy to put
- 29:29together, I think, because so many really generic cosplay items could lend themselves
- 29:37to this. But anyway, so this is when we jump to master Morea
- 29:45and these guys come up. One of them uses it's a trio of little
- 29:51guys, and they reminded me a great deal of the small like trigger treaters
- 30:00are the kind of servants I guess, for lack of a better word,
- 30:04of the oogie boogie in Nightmare Before Christmas, which I only just saw for
- 30:12the first time, like a couple of years ago, but that was really
- 30:17the energy here. And they use a bow and arrow to pop this guy's
- 30:25bubble that he's like, this is one of those really weird to me visual
- 30:33cues. But you know, you guys have explained to me that an anime,
- 30:38a sort of bubble that's protruding and expanding and then shrinking is a sign
- 30:45that somebody is asleep as well as I think in Full Metal Alchemist there was
- 30:52a girl who was asleep in a library and there's just like a weird little
- 30:55sort of ghost figure dancing above her head like like as if it's coming out
- 31:00of her mouth, and I was like, what the fuck is that supposed
- 31:04to mean? And everybody's like, oh, that just means she's sleeping,
- 31:07and you know, I think of that as being really weird. But then
- 31:12I think of how our visual cue, like in American cartoons and stuff,
- 31:18is Z's coming out of her mouth, and that's also really strange, you
- 31:26know, Z Like, I guess, why is that better? It's not
- 31:32really Gus says, it's a parasol. Oh okay, so the gothlic lolita
- 31:40thing, we're really going for it, Saraphim says, So Kuma is Japanese
- 31:45for bear, so the ginger stuffed teddy bear looking thing is pretty much named
- 31:51Barry. I like it. I want to call him that from right now,
- 31:56from now on. And yeah, Perona tends to be a really popular
- 32:00causeplay. Yeah, this feels like a really easy one, you know,
- 32:02and it's cute and it's like, even if people don't necessarily know who you
- 32:07are, they're just going to be like, oh, you look nice,
- 32:10versus some of the other Cause plays that I feel like, if people don't
- 32:15know who you are, they will just sort of look at each other and
- 32:19be like, what the fuck is up with that outfit? Like, I
- 32:23just don't see being able to go out into the wider world in some of
- 32:30the costumes in this show. I feel like I don't know. So anyway,
- 32:36they're all yelling at Master Maria to wake up, and this is when
- 32:42we see like he has this big belly in what looks to be sort of
- 32:47plaid or argyle pants, but we don't see his face. It's just his
- 32:52eyes opening, which are glowing in a sort of purple haze of smoke that
- 32:59like hangs out around them. And these guys are all reporting to him about
- 33:05the straw Hat pirates and how they have been brought to the island for his
- 33:10benefit, and they're asking if he's pleased, because these are the same pirates
- 33:15that brought down in his lobby. So what's making me sort of like interested
- 33:22here is the suggestion that the more powerful they are, the better the more
- 33:29happy Maria is going to be, as if he, like somehow either is
- 33:36looking for a worthy opponent or can absorb the power of people who's like whose
- 33:45shadows he takes. So he's glad to be getting a whole assortment of people
- 33:51who have done something like really impressive, because that means that he will grow
- 33:55more powerful. I don't know, I don't know, I don't know what
- 34:00that could mean. But so this is the part where they're looking up and
- 34:05they're like, what is that. Frankie realizes that the banner they're seeing hanging
- 34:10is a sale, and this is when we get the official reveal about how
- 34:15Killer Killer Bark Thriller Bark is the largest pirate ship there is. It's not
- 34:25an actual island. It is a pirate ship with this huge like, first
- 34:32of all, it has actual land around it. It has the big ass
- 34:37building in the middle, which just looks like a capital building from a major
- 34:44city, and then chained around it are is the huge weird wall with the
- 34:52mouthlike gate and that is apparently a perman fixture around it. Pretty wild.
- 35:07So yeah, everybody is standing there discussing this, and Frankie explains, oh,
- 35:14I get it. Bark A bark is a type of sailing ship with
- 35:16three or more masts, And I was like, you know what, Frankie,
- 35:21appreciate you explaining that because I and I'm pretty sure that, like when
- 35:25I've seen bark for a boat. It's been spelled b a r que.
- 35:31So it did not occur to me that maybe spelling has changed over time,
- 35:37or that what I was reading was maybe the spelling from like another country,
- 35:42or I don't know, but I just appreciated that, like explanation there,
- 35:49and yeah, this place is the home of Geko Moria, and the camera
- 35:55as he says this, jumps to the inside of Geko's house and all of
- 36:02these different clocks that are in there a lot of significance for timekeeping apparently.
- 36:09So we go back to Invisible Man and he is saying, like, we're
- 36:15going to take down the straw hats, show them no mercy. Together,
- 36:20we will crush them. Now, go make me proud. And I was
- 36:23like, man, they just faced them. And I don't know if you
- 36:28noticed, but when you got here, they were all upside down in the
- 36:30dirt. I don't know why you think that, like now, it's going
- 36:35to be a different result, but I can basically guarantee it will be the
- 36:39same result. So I wouldn't get my hopes up too much if I were
- 36:45you. I'm just saying. So then we get a sort of montage of
- 36:52different areas of the island. I don't really get what the meaning of that
- 36:59was supposed to be. I kept like waiting for some significance for that I
- 37:02don't know. But we go then to Pirna. She has finally we see
- 37:08her in full color. She has these boots. She's got black and white
- 37:13striped stockings, this like little frilly skirt with like a sort of cow gurlesque
- 37:22look to it, and a big heart buckle on the front, and then
- 37:29a capelit that's pink with what I think is supposed to be maybe a lacy
- 37:36frill to it, but really kind of looks like sheer ling wool that ties
- 37:40at her throat with like a big pink ribbon over a kind of ordinary looking
- 37:46in a lot of ways, long sleeve white tea that has a heart,
- 37:52like a couple of heart shaped symbols on it, and then her hair and
- 38:00big round black eyes that are like very not human looking. They echo the
- 38:08eyes of the ghosts in many ways. And she has to top it all
- 38:14off, you know, her pigtails have each got a little bow and then
- 38:20a crown, a giant I'm not taught, Like if I were listening to
- 38:24this and I heard somebody say, and she's wearing a crown what I would
- 38:29imagine would be a kind of like delicate jeweled metal sort of tiara type thing.
- 38:39Allow me to really describe this crown. It is much more like when
- 38:46you see a crown on I don't know, something official, like a stamp,
- 38:52where it's got like the velvet kind of cap inside, and then the
- 39:00metal curves up and around into the center where like a cross comes up off
- 39:06the top of the crown. The really traditional, like her Majesty the Queen
- 39:13wore this for her coronation kind of crown. And I mean, I'm talking
- 39:17with the cross and everything, it's really quite a look. So then we
- 39:23go to Maria and he is talking about the dark realm full of ghosts and
- 39:30ghoules, this place we call Thriller Bark. They are going to see nothing
- 39:37short of the nightmare to end all nightmares. And he's saying all of this
- 39:44and apparently like all of his henchmen can hear, or at least they all
- 39:47have the understanding of what's about to happen at the same time. But then
- 39:52we cut to the rest of the straw Hats coming to the mansion, and
- 39:58it's kind of funny because like, all of this drama is happening, but
- 40:01they apparently don't see any of it, and they have no inkling whatsoever.
- 40:07So there's like a sort of undercut of the drama here for a second to
- 40:14me. But what we get at the start of the next episode. I'm
- 40:24trying to jump ahead to find the right spot here. Okay, here it
- 40:30is Feasts of the Zombie song. We have all of these guys and these
- 40:34zombies are walking around, and I kept being like, that just looks like
- 40:38a disco ball. It just looks like a disco ball. What is this?
- 40:44There's no light that's coming off it, though, so I just kept
- 40:46being like, I mean, that's what it looks like. I guess it
- 40:50could be anything, who knows, but that's what it looks like. Spoilers
- 40:53it is, but we don't have that yet. First, we go to
- 40:58Hogbacks little chamber. I keep wanting to say torture chamber. It's his lab,
- 41:07you know, but come on, it's a torture chamber also, and
- 41:13Nami is sort of getting like confrontational with him and being like, we have
- 41:16seen what you're doing, and all of these other zombies are also down to
- 41:22you. And he's like, well, where's your proof, and then she
- 41:25points out, Victoria Sindri, you died ten years ago. And it's interesting
- 41:34because the doctor seems genuinely put off that they know this, which I was
- 41:42sort of expecting him to be like, well, yeah, and look what,
- 41:45Look she's still alive. I think that's pretty cool, right, But
- 41:49he seems at first just frustrated at the fact that they have got this information
- 41:53at all. He gives the command for them to all be grown into the
- 42:00world of darkness, never to return. And when he says that, Sindry
- 42:06gestures and suddenly has like a whole stack of plates in her hand, which
- 42:09I was expecting somebody to say something like, really more plates, But no,
- 42:14they don't really address it, and I thought that was kind of odd.
- 42:19So let's see here it is. Here comes Ryuma. That's the name
- 42:24of the other sort of I think Chopper calls him like a mummy, and
- 42:36he comes in with his little hair and his in this tiny, hilarious kind
- 42:42of he's got that that sort of ponytail that I really can't stand because it's
- 42:51I have nothing against men wearing ponytails as a general rule. I'm actually kind
- 42:55of a big fan of long hair on men, depending on you know,
- 43:00a lot of factors. But one thing I cannot take seriously is the ponytail
- 43:09in one spot where the rest of the hair is the same length as like
- 43:15an ordinary men's haircut. And I know that this is, you know,
- 43:20sometimes a historical style, a cultural style. I just think it's a bad
- 43:25look. I never like it. It's one step away from like a rat
- 43:31tail, you know, which I will never get over that they decided to
- 43:37style Anakin Skywalker in the prequels with a rat tail. But that's neither here
- 43:43nor there. So yeah, this dude says the same thing to Nami about
- 43:47how I only have eyes for ladies like you, you're beautiful, and then
- 43:52again, would you show me your panties? Oh boy? Now, at
- 43:59the very least, it turns out that there is some significance to the fact
- 44:04that he has said the exact same thing to her that Brooke said. And
- 44:09she sort of stops and it's like, wait a second, I know that
- 44:13line. What is this? And I don't know, because you know,
- 44:19all she's thinking is that can't just be a coincidence. But I'm like,
- 44:23are they related to each other? Or is this guy like part of the
- 44:30same soul this dude is saying he is one of my zombie generals and he's
- 44:38something quite special. They call his sort a samurai and this one supposedly slayed
- 44:46a flying dragon according to the legend. And I don't know how, like
- 45:00he just can't imagine why he says the exact same thing. Is there one
- 45:04personality that's like controlling all of the zombies, because they do seem to have
- 45:10distinct personalities, like when Lufy is talking to them in the graveyard and whatnot.
- 45:15And I'm not sure, Like Brooke doesn't count as a zombie. He
- 45:22was brought back to life by a devil fruit, so he isn't falling under
- 45:27the same category. Has this guy the way that Hogback is talking about him,
- 45:36seems he seems to be taking credit for this dude being alive, So
- 45:42I think that said, though he doesn't have the numbers tattooed on him,
- 45:49I don't think so maybe he's taking credit when really it's not. He's kind
- 45:57of, you know, overstating thing a little bit. I don't know,
- 46:02I don't know what to think. And he comes at them and he's really
- 46:07really fast. He has his blade out, and all three of our friends
- 46:13are sort of standing there, like what happened? I thought that he was
- 46:16going to come after us, and nothing, even I don't understand, and
- 46:23they start to walk away. They're like, I guess it was nothing.
- 46:28We're good, and they try to leave the room, and then all of
- 46:32a sudden, they go flying and you see all of this, like blood
- 46:39coming out of their mouths and whatnot, And what it's supposed to be is
- 46:44that basically he is so fast that he hit them and it took them like
- 46:52a full twenty seconds to register the fact that they were hit, which I
- 46:58kind of enjoyed. It is like a bit of a goofy move, but
- 47:01I don't know, I thought it worked. I was fine with it.
- 47:06So we then have all of the rest of the straw Hats coming into the
- 47:14big main room where the start of the fight went down, with all of
- 47:19the guys in the portraits, and we've got the Pig who is sort of
- 47:25speaking for the room initially before everybody is like, let's get them boys,
- 47:32And it's another fun juxtaposition similar to the zombies in the Graveyard, where everybody
- 47:39comes out of the portraits and the huge bearskin rug rises off the floor and
- 47:46they're all threatening them, hanging out around them, and you know, just
- 47:52really putting on a show, expecting our friends to panic the way the rest
- 48:00of our friends did. But instead they all just stare and are like,
- 48:06oh, that's what's going on, all right, Well, let's deal with
- 48:10this. And we go to each and every one of them individually putting down
- 48:15their own monster in different ways. You know, We've got a pretty fun
- 48:22moment where Robin is talking to the woman who's in the portrait and it's just
- 48:27like, you're really way too pretty to be acting like this, and the
- 48:30lady's like, you really think so, and she twists her with her you
- 48:35know, flour powers. Frankie literally banging two heads together. Zoro says something
- 48:44about two swords style nijeri, and one of them is like, what is
- 48:47that sushi? And when he strikes them, I should stick to Robin.
- 48:53Oh my god, that is such a bad joke. Good god. And
- 48:59then the bear skin rug is like chasing Lufy, who is just giggling and
- 49:05having the time of his life. At one point he like slams a paw
- 49:09down and Lufy just somersaults out of the way, then jumps over his head
- 49:15and runs in the other direction, and it's just Loukey wasting this bear's time,
- 49:22having a really good time playing tag, essentially, and eventually Lufy is
- 49:30like, all right, well now it's time. I was going to ask
- 49:32you to join my crew, but you tried to smash me, so we're
- 49:36gonna go with gum gum bazooka. And I love when he goes down.
- 49:42The pig on the wall says no, not bear rug, which I like
- 49:47to think is not only because the bear rug is obviously huge, very intimidating,
- 49:53would be difficult to beat, and probably we all think that's our,
- 49:58you know, last resort that's definitely going to succeed where everyone else failed.
- 50:01But I like to also think hidden the pig and the bear are the only
- 50:07two non human type creatures in this whole room. Everybody else is basically a
- 50:16person, you know, a portrait of a human, and I'd like to
- 50:20think that there's some sort of like weird camaraderie and kinship with them because of
- 50:23that, even though that's a completely invented scenario in my head. But I
- 50:27don't know, I'm just kind of you know, why not. Yeah,
- 50:30I stick together somehow. So this is when there's this fucking pair of like
- 50:42little squirrels, y'all. They have I think they're chipmunks, saying squirrels.
- 50:47They have squirrel like tails, so probably they're based on like a version of
- 50:53the animal that I'm not familiar with. They have squirrel like tails but chipmunk
- 50:59like coloring. And they are standing over Nami Usup and Chopper, who have
- 51:07been stuffed into a very very large coffin. And these two little guys are
- 51:16clearly also both zombies. They are low key adorable and they fasten the lid
- 51:24on and doctor Hogback is like, all right, now take the intruders away.
- 51:31Do not know exactly where they're going to end up. Then we go
- 51:37to the procession of zombies and we are really getting here now, kids.
- 51:42So all of our friends are hanging out figuring out what they're going to do
- 51:51next, and they notice Sanji is missing, where is our cook? And
- 51:57I love it because a second ago, the ping off the wall was acting
- 52:00real intimidated, like definitely wasn't expecting these guys to win, and they won
- 52:07so handily, and you know, it's really seeming like the straw hats hold
- 52:13all the power. But as soon as they ask where Sangi is, everybody
- 52:17in the room starts snickering at the straw hats. At one point, one
- 52:22of the guys from one of the portraits is like, guys, stop laughing.
- 52:25They can hear you, which made it all the funnier. And then
- 52:32everybody has different reactions. I love Sorrow, closes his eyes and just says
- 52:39goodbye, Sangie, Rest in peace. He's just like, oh, what
- 52:45can he do? But what Lufy says is it's Sangi. I'm not worried
- 52:54about it. I'm sure he's going to be fine. And the pig on
- 53:00the wall starts to get a little bit of his confidence back, and he's
- 53:04talking about how they think they really did something here, but they hardly put
- 53:07a dent in their numbers. And on the other hand, you just lost
- 53:14one of your key fighters. I wonder who's next. And when he says
- 53:21this, Robin interrupts and is like, well, regardless, we should really
- 53:28keep our eyes open. And he tries to interrupt again and be like,
- 53:31admitted, you're scared. You don't stand a chance, and she just talks
- 53:36over him and says I suppose that we could threaten him, but even if
- 53:39we did, And as she says this, like in the background, the
- 53:43pig is like, like he was intending to get to monologue and she's not
- 53:50letting him monologue. And I'm always a fan of that trope, you know.
- 53:55So Zoro is like, all right, well, we'll just drag him
- 54:00with us and use him as a guide, and again with the guys on
- 54:04the ground laughing, yeah, yeah, guide them, and the pig says,
- 54:09hey, now come on, no, no, no, go ahead,
- 54:14if you want to die so badly challenge our master, it's your funeral.
- 54:20And one of the dudes is like, he's so scary, I can't
- 54:22even speak his name. Let me try get go Nope, just as I
- 54:28thought, it's too scary. And then you know what it is. You
- 54:35know what it is, guys, It's time for our zombie song. This
- 54:43is really something we've got lights, we've got that fucking disco ball is doing
- 54:51exactly the thing it I want the song to be better than it is,
- 55:02but I'm also we have never, as far as I recall, had like
- 55:07a musical number in this show. I may be wrong about that, but
- 55:13I don't remember it, so it was hard for me to like hold that
- 55:16against it because it was so unexpected and fun and it's just everyone. It's
- 55:24zombie night, round and round until you die. And they're doing a motion
- 55:30that's very similar to the like thriller dance motion, which I have to assume
- 55:35is a very purposeful homage, and they do that one zombie Night, round
- 55:40and round until you die. They sing that like probably ten times in a
- 55:46row, and eventually we get to a new verse or I don't know if
- 55:52you would even call them that because they're so short. I'm watching it,
- 55:58you guys this I forgot about the whoop whoops that are intermittent with it.
- 56:04It looks like in the sub they just say that. In the dub,
- 56:08I could swear that there was like another verse of a different set of lines,
- 56:13but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, So we cut from them dancing and
- 56:19really like having such a good time. I can't you know. The zombies
- 56:24have got given a they've been dealt a bad hand, and I kind of
- 56:32enjoy the fact that they get to have a little bit of fun here and
- 56:36there, you know. So we cut then to Absalom going into the crypt.
- 56:45I guess underneath the building, and he's yelling at all of these different
- 56:51coffins that look very much the same as the ones that Nami and Zoro or
- 56:55Nami and Usop and Chopper were put into. He yells, the intruders have
- 57:01all wandered into our territory. There are prey. Now let your hunger run
- 57:07wild. This will be a feast of terror. Now awaken zombie generals.
- 57:15And we see people coming up out of the ground. We see people opening
- 57:20their coffins. We see the dudes who are standing on the sides in what
- 57:28do you call it in like suits of armor lift their weapons off of the
- 57:34like platforms that they're standing on. We've even got a dude at one point
- 57:39that I'm assuming he was like assembled this way, but he's got four arms
- 57:45and it looks like he's got guns. There's a guy with swords still stuck
- 57:51in his abdomen and holes where other swords I assume used to be. There's
- 57:57a man that's very giving Juggernaut very very much. And Absalom is still talking
- 58:06about how the straw hats are going to fall quickly. They're arrogant. They
- 58:10really think they can beat us, but they aren't going to do it,
- 58:15and we see a very quickly cut together shot of the little like chipmunk guys
- 58:24carrying the coffin, and then we see the coffin. I am assuming it's
- 58:31the same coffin, like wrapped in what looks like cobwebs or something hanging off
- 58:38of a chain, like dangling over the ground over the water. I believe,
- 58:45and I don't really like I'm assuming the cut is so strange, Like
- 58:52ordinarily i'd be like, clearly what this is supposed to be telling us is
- 58:55that it's the same coffin that they just put them on there, But it's
- 59:00done so quickly and so abruptly that part of me is doubting whether it is
- 59:05the same coffin. I don't know if it's maybe the like a decoy coffin,
- 59:10But anyway, we then go to Absalom and he is standing in the
- 59:15midst of his zombie generals and is like basically sicking them on our friends,
- 59:21and then to be continued, and that is the end of the episode.
- 59:25So I'm pretty stoked. I think the next one, I'm covering three episodes,
- 59:30so I'm going to assume there's either a lot of like filler stuff or
- 59:35a lot of action that I can't necessarily like go blow by blow on.
- 59:39But I am really looking forward to getting to see this weird fight with these
- 59:45zombies generals, because they look cool as hell. I'm very excited about them.
- 59:52And Saraphim says, so Yuma and the story of him killing a dragon
- 59:58is a reference to an earlier men and go Oda did called Wanted. I'm
- 1:00:02assuming that's not the Wanted that turned into that movie with Angelina Jolie, right,
- 1:00:12and then you just know that if he thought his editors would let him
- 1:00:15get away with it, those zombies would be outright doing the thriller dance.
- 1:00:17I am surprised he didn't try and push that even more. But I do
- 1:00:23really enjoy the fact that there is an actual dance of zombies because I know
- 1:00:28what you're referencing with thriller bark. Of course, I never thought we would
- 1:00:32see a dance, and that was just a treat that was delightful. All
- 1:00:38right, guys, thank you all so much for hanging out with me.
- 1:00:40Appreciate you so much. Until next time to the Loo, motherfuckers. That
- 1:01:15was an Unspoiled Network podcast
