- 0:00Speaker 1: We continue on here on this Wednesday afternoon, We obviously
- 0:06Speaker 1: had the chance to talk some football with Andrew Alligretta,
- 0:09Speaker 1: the voice of the Vanderbilt Commodore's The log warns, get
- 0:11Speaker 1: ready to take on this Vanderbilt team. As as you heard,
- 0:14Speaker 1: that's feeling pretty good about themselves at five and two,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and you know they've got the running back. We talked
- 0:21Speaker 1: about Cedric Alexander that Cam and I both had a
- 0:24Speaker 1: chance to call games involving Cedric playing for LBJ, and
- 0:28Speaker 1: while he was playing at LBJ, uh he he had
- 0:31Speaker 1: a tremendous career and became the aisd's all time leading rusher,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and a lot of his feats and accomplishments were kind
- 0:42Speaker 1: of overlooked. There were other running backs who across the
- 0:45Speaker 1: state were having huge freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years
- 0:51Speaker 1: except for Jane Blue, because Jane Blue skipped his senior
- 0:54Speaker 1: year of high school to go on to Texas and
- 0:58Speaker 1: but he had really loaded a lot of hay in
- 1:00Speaker 1: the bar and his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. And
- 1:06Speaker 1: Jayden started off the season really really good and had
- 1:09Speaker 1: had a couple of big performances, certainly against Michigan and
- 1:13Speaker 1: had a couple of other big games. Then of course
- 1:15Speaker 1: had the two fumbles you know in the game against
- 1:19Speaker 1: Mississippi States last week, caught a touchdown pass, caught targets
- 1:23Speaker 1: out of the backfield, did not carry the ball. But
- 1:26Speaker 1: sark could mentioned this press conference there's going to be
- 1:29Speaker 1: more of a concerted effort to get him the football. Meanwhile,
- 1:32Speaker 1: as he processed all of his his things, good and
- 1:36Speaker 1: bad and getting ready for another week, he had the
- 1:39Speaker 1: opportunity to sit down with our man, Will Matthews are
- 1:43Speaker 1: sideline reported on the Long Horn Radio Network. Gets a
- 1:45Speaker 1: chance to sit down and visit with these guys.
- 1:48Speaker 2: We know what happened, we know how things went.
- 1:51Speaker 3: How do you bounce back? What does that look like
- 1:53Speaker 3: for you?
- 1:55Speaker 4: Just no reverting back to our preparation and leaning on
- 1:58Speaker 4: each other. We know this team has a lot of
- 2:01Speaker 4: a lot of fight, and you know, we we trust
- 2:03Speaker 4: each other and we trusting the coaching staff. So it's
- 2:05Speaker 4: just a matter of us getting back, getting back to
- 2:07Speaker 4: work and focusing on uh a task of hand, which
- 2:10Speaker 4: is vander built.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And you know, RB Rooms, It's it's been difficult. A
- 2:15Speaker 2: lot of guys have gone down. I mean there's been
- 2:17Speaker 2: some nix and bruises all around with everybody. What's the
- 2:21Speaker 2: vibe in there right now? You guys have been so
- 2:22Speaker 2: strong throughout the season in the last couple of years
- 2:24Speaker 2: as well.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Man, the injuries definitely have gotten us a lot closer,
- 2:29Speaker 4: Especially me. I have to take a lot of took
- 2:32Speaker 4: out on the leadership role a lot more since I'm
- 2:35Speaker 4: older guy in the room. But you know, we we
- 2:37Speaker 4: have a lot of guys that could play in that room,
- 2:38Speaker 4: and it's just you know, me trying to lead, do
- 2:41Speaker 4: things the right way and bring the younger guys along.
- 2:43Speaker 4: And you know, I know, I know those guys could play,
- 2:46Speaker 4: but you know, it's just us staying on top of
- 2:48Speaker 4: our game, you know, to make sure that you know
- 2:50Speaker 4: when someone do go down that the next the next
- 2:52Speaker 4: man up doesn't have a big drop off.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And when you you're walking into these next I mean
- 2:58Speaker 2: like no matter what happens, the lost comes. Uh, well
- 3:02Speaker 2: we all did the next one. And that's just with football.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Tell us about the mentality moving on to this next one.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Just going on and know every week. We know we
- 3:11Speaker 4: lost the old U last year, you know, and after
- 3:14Speaker 4: that we went on to win the conference and we
- 3:17Speaker 4: went to the playoffs, so you know, we know that
- 3:19Speaker 4: we're capable, capable of you know, going to the playoffs.
- 3:24Speaker 4: But you know, like we said, just take one week
- 3:27Speaker 4: at a time and you know, just focus on, you
- 3:29Speaker 4: know what what we're doing that week.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Then when you talk about focusing on the things that
- 3:35Speaker 2: you have to do as a team, let's let's zoom
- 3:39Speaker 2: into you what what are some things that you're working
- 3:41Speaker 2: on for this week to get ready for this game.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Mainly just making sure I play fast, you know, being
- 3:47Speaker 4: more detailed of my game, uh, not taking plays off.
- 3:51Speaker 4: That's that's really the main theme. So you know, I
- 3:53Speaker 4: feel like when I'm you know, very detailed and I
- 3:56Speaker 4: and I play fast, that you know I play pretty well.
- 3:59Speaker 4: So you know, those are the main things that I'm
- 4:02Speaker 4: focusing on as you know, each day to get better.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yeah, he's been just he's real upfront, matter of fact
- 4:10Speaker 1: about what he needs to do to be better. I
- 4:12Speaker 1: mean there was all that attention and focus on him
- 4:15Speaker 1: after the two fumbles, and Sark has said it was
- 4:20Speaker 1: not a purposeful move, not to have him run the ball,
- 4:24Speaker 1: but to throw the ball to him. It's just that
- 4:27Speaker 1: one of his better gifts is being able to catch
- 4:29Speaker 1: the ball out of the backfield, which he did for
- 4:30Speaker 1: the touchdown for the long worn touchdown, but the second one.
- 4:34Speaker 1: But I agree with Sark's statement that they have to
- 4:40Speaker 1: do more with him to not make it look like
- 4:46Speaker 1: he is only in the game to catch the ball
- 4:49Speaker 1: out of the backfield. There has to be a versatility
- 4:53Speaker 1: element there. And he ran the ball, and we were
- 4:56Speaker 1: told before the season he would run the ball some
- 4:58Speaker 1: between the tackles, and he has done that a little bit.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You know, losing CJ. Baxter made a big difference there.
- 5:06Speaker 1: But we've seen you know, not only not only Blue
- 5:12Speaker 1: run the ball between the tackles, but obviously Trey Wisner
- 5:15Speaker 1: and we know Jared Gibson's going to do so as well.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And this Saturday against Vanderbilt, that has to be one
- 5:23Speaker 1: of the key things is going to be ball controlled.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Because Vanderbilt proved in its win over Alabama they can
- 5:28Speaker 1: control the clock keep the ball out of the hands
- 5:31Speaker 1: of the Texas offense.
- 5:32Speaker 3: It's going to be difficult for the long run to
- 5:34Speaker 3: do things. I mean, it was like.
- 5:35Speaker 1: What forty two minutes of possession time or something like
- 5:37Speaker 1: that for Vanderbilt and that win over Alabama.
- 5:41Speaker 3: So the long words can't allow that to happen.
- 5:42Speaker 1: They've got to be on.
- 5:45Speaker 3: The mark in terms of ball control.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Now, They're never going to turn down an easy, quick
- 5:49Speaker 1: touchdown if they can get it. But the point is
- 5:53Speaker 1: get the ball back in the hands of the offense.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Don't to have the defense not allow the Vanderbilt offense
- 5:59Speaker 1: to get into a rhythm of being able to run
- 6:01Speaker 1: and pass and run the clock. Get it back to
- 6:03Speaker 1: the offense, and then the offense move the ball down
- 6:06Speaker 1: the field however long it takes, long drive, short drive, whatever,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and have it in the end zone for points. So
- 6:12Speaker 1: there's some thoughts on that as we draw a little
- 6:16Speaker 1: bit closer. You know, it's interesting in discussing the injury thing.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I don't know how many folks have heard about this.
- 6:23Speaker 1: The quarterback for Indiana, Curtis Rorke, got hurt in the
- 6:27Speaker 1: second half of the game against Nebraska and hurt his thumb,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and of course Indiana is seven to zero.
- 6:37Speaker 3: They've drawn a lot of attention.
- 6:38Speaker 1: ESPN College Game Day is going to be there. But
- 6:41Speaker 1: Rourke injured his thumb. He had surgery on the thumb
- 6:46Speaker 1: on his right thumb on Monday, so I thought normally,
- 6:50Speaker 1: if you have end season surgery like that.
- 6:52Speaker 3: You're going to be done. Well. Not only is he
- 6:54Speaker 3: not done, he's listed as being.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Possibly probable or possibly at the very least questionable for
- 7:03Speaker 1: the game next Saturday at Michigan State for Indiana, and
- 7:08Speaker 1: even is still kept on the injury report as doubtful
- 7:11Speaker 1: for this week's game against Washington, not completely out of
- 7:14Speaker 1: the conversation. He was listed as being out indefinitely after
- 7:19Speaker 1: injuring the thumb, but they said they expect him back
- 7:23Speaker 1: at some point during the season. That's pretty remarkable stuff
- 7:26Speaker 1: there for a quarterback who's having a really good season
- 7:29Speaker 1: on what has become a pretty remarkable football team. So
- 7:33Speaker 1: there's some things there. He's a transfer from Ohio six
- 7:37Speaker 1: year college football, has completed seventy five percent of his
- 7:41Speaker 1: passes at IU, fifteen touchdowns, three interceptions. The Indiana offense
- 7:47Speaker 1: is number one in the nation, scoring offense just under
- 7:50Speaker 1: forty nine points per game. That's the guy, that's the team.
- 7:52Speaker 1: He's coached by, the guy that came in from James Madison,
- 7:56Speaker 1: Kurt Signetti, and Rourke was one of twenty seven transfers
- 8:02Speaker 1: twenty seven transfers to Indiana. That's amazing to consider that
- 8:08Speaker 1: you could cobble together the culture and the chemistry that
- 8:12Speaker 1: quickly with twenty seven transfers. Pretty impressed by it anyway,
- 8:16Speaker 1: all right, coming up, we'll get ready to wrap up
- 8:19Speaker 1: today's edition of the program. A reminder we have long
- 8:22Speaker 1: worn weekly with Coach Sart the recording coming up at
- 8:26Speaker 1: six o'clock at Pluckers the West Campus location in Austin.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We record that from six o'clock till seven o'clock. And
- 8:36Speaker 1: let's see, we'll tell you about our special guests coming
- 8:40Speaker 1: up as well.
- 8:41Speaker 3: We'll do that.
- 8:42Speaker 1: We mentioned him earlier, but we'll do it again when
- 8:44Speaker 1: we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
- 8:46Speaker 1: and where you always listen to us for free on
- 8:48Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app.
