- 1:12Speaker 2: up in Australia and the hurdle moments that came with
- 1:16Speaker 2: her teenage years, including a few abusive relationships that ultimately
- 1:20Speaker 2: made her question or value. Sky gets real about trying
- 1:24Speaker 2: to enter her life around age eighteen and how that
- 1:27Speaker 2: experience made her determined to help those with similar struggles,
- 1:31Speaker 2: eventually empowering her journey into the fitness industry and creating
- 1:35Speaker 2: her online programming. As I mentioned, she's now got more
- 1:38Speaker 2: than a couple million followers on Instagram, but her online
- 1:40Speaker 2: community is greater than fourteen million women, and with that
- 1:45Speaker 2: level of exposure, as I'm sure you can imagine, it
- 1:47Speaker 2: comes with a fair amount of criticism. So we talk
- 1:51Speaker 2: about that today. We talk about how she handles the
- 1:53Speaker 2: naysayers and the individuals who inspire her to be better
- 1:57Speaker 2: so that she can be more present both online and

- 4:54Speaker 2: than two point five million people follow her over on
- 4:59Speaker 2: Instagram for her fitness programs. Her name is known around
- 5:03Speaker 2: the world. And how you doing today?
- 5:06Speaker 3: I'm good, thank you. It's nastin early here and light
- 5:08Speaker 3: there is it?
- 5:10Speaker 2: Well, that's what I was gonna kick us off with.
- 5:12Speaker 2: What time is it where you are? What is it?
- 5:14Speaker 1: Name?
- 5:14Speaker 3: Light thirty or something?
- 5:15Speaker 2: You height?
- 5:16Speaker 3: Thirty?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Oh wow, okay, eight thirty is not so bad. For
- 5:20Speaker 2: some reason, it's five thirty New York time. I always
- 5:23Speaker 2: get the New York Australia like conversion a little backwards.
- 5:27Speaker 1: A huge difference, isn't it. Whenever I go over there,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I get really jet lagged. It's just horrendous. I would imagine, so,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I would imagine so So. I mean, I just threw
- 5:36Speaker 1: into the mix two point five million Instagram followers, but
- 5:39Speaker 1: that is a drop in the bucket compared to the
- 5:42Speaker 1: fourteen million women worldwide that train with you, fifty percent
- 5:47Speaker 1: of which are in the United States. I know that
- 5:50Speaker 1: this isn't something that happened overnight. So I'm really excited
- 5:53Speaker 1: to dive into your backstory today and get to know
- 5:56Speaker 1: a little bit more about the woman behind all of
- 5:59Speaker 1: this programming.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Yeah, let's do it.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Let's do it. Okay, So talk to me about growing
- 6:06Speaker 2: up in Australia.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Well, I was probably the complete opposite to what I
- 6:11Speaker 1: would seem to be now. I mean, deep down, I'm
- 6:13Speaker 1: still that little girl, but I've come a long way,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and I think everyone does growing up, but I was
- 6:18Speaker 1: really shy, like extremely shy that I couldn't talk to people.
- 6:22Speaker 1: If I was at school and had to do something
- 6:24Speaker 1: in front of the class, I would be vomiting with fear.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I didn't have any confidence at all. I had no
- 6:31Speaker 1: self worth. I was really insecure, and I'd struggled with
- 6:36Speaker 1: in my teens anxiety and depression and it was pretty bad,
- 6:41Speaker 1: and I tried to end my life when I was eighteen.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So yeah, I've come a long way since then. Because obviously,
- 6:49Speaker 1: being in front of all these people online you sort
- 6:52Speaker 1: of have to have some sort of confidence, and I
- 6:55Speaker 1: do a lot of TV stuff, so doing things like
- 6:57Speaker 1: that is just it's crazy for me because I couldn't
- 7:00Speaker 1: even stand up in front of the class at school
- 7:02Speaker 1: back in the day. So if I went back and
- 7:04Speaker 1: talked to my teachers, they'd probably be shocked at what
- 7:06Speaker 1: I'm doing now compared to then.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I know you mentioned in a Woman's Health interview that
- 7:12Speaker 2: you had a difficult childhood when it came to some
- 7:15Speaker 2: family stuff, and obviously you just mentioned the trouble that
- 7:18Speaker 2: you went through in your teens. Talked me through a
- 7:21Speaker 2: little bit about what that environment was like growing up.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Yeah, well, my mom's always been loving and caring, and
- 7:28Speaker 1: she did such a good job. She was a single
- 7:30Speaker 1: mum and she raised my sister, was gonna say daughter,
- 7:32Speaker 1: my sister and I on her own, with not much
- 7:36Speaker 1: support from anyone else. And she, I guess she also
- 7:40Speaker 1: suffered with mental health issues too, and she had her
- 7:43Speaker 1: own problems and things being a mother on her own.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And then we sort of grew up in that environment
- 7:50Speaker 1: and I'm very similar to her. And then we didn't
- 7:53Speaker 1: have much in the way of money, and we lived
- 7:56Speaker 1: in community housing.
- 7:57Speaker 3: And yeah, it was just it was very different to now.
- 8:01Speaker 3: But I think because I.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Had no father figure, I didn't really I couldn't really
- 8:08Speaker 1: talk to guys very well. I didn't really have a
- 8:11Speaker 1: good relationship with men. I kind of feared them, but
- 8:14Speaker 1: I craved love from them. I wanted to be loved
- 8:17Speaker 1: and it was more of a fatherly love that I
- 8:19Speaker 1: was searching for. So I ended up looking for relationships
- 8:24Speaker 1: with guys that were like I wanted to have a father,
- 8:28Speaker 1: but obviously that's the wrong way to go about it.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I'm a teenager, and no teenage boys going to be
- 8:33Speaker 1: able to feel that spot or any man really. But
- 8:36Speaker 1: I ended up attracting these sort of men that I
- 8:38Speaker 1: guess they saw that I was really vulnerable and I
- 8:42Speaker 1: was desperate for love and they were I had a few, well,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I had two really abusive boyfriends, but one was really
- 8:49Speaker 1: severely abusive and I ended up getting a restraining order
- 8:53Speaker 1: on him.
- 8:54Speaker 3: And I think I was twenty by this stage.
- 8:57Speaker 1: But yeah, I just because I had no self worth
- 8:59Speaker 1: or I didn't have any love for myself, I sort
- 9:02Speaker 1: of searched for it externally to try and fill that
- 9:05Speaker 1: void and search for it in the wrong places obviously,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and ended up having a terrible relationship and being abused
- 9:13Speaker 1: emotionally and physically.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So you said that that was around twenty and you
- 9:18Speaker 2: mentioned at eighteen trying to kill yourself. What was going
- 9:22Speaker 2: on at that time that led you down that path.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah, at that stage, I had my first boyfriend. I
- 9:28Speaker 1: was with him for four years, and he was abusive
- 9:32Speaker 1: in not so much in violent sort of ways, like
- 9:35Speaker 1: not so much physical, but he was very emotionally abusive
- 9:38Speaker 1: to me, and he was just a very toxic relationship,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and he was just threatening to go off and basically
- 9:48Speaker 1: sleep with other girls, to put it like straight. And
- 9:53Speaker 1: then I was just really really upset, and I wanted
- 9:58Speaker 1: to be with him forever because I had that fairy
- 9:59Speaker 1: tale idea that you know, you'd be with the one
- 10:02Speaker 1: person forever, and he was my first boyfriend, and he
- 10:05Speaker 1: just wanted to go off and be with other people.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And he didn't like the fact that I was modeling,
- 10:10Speaker 1: because I was modeling back then, and it was more
- 10:12Speaker 1: because I wanted to try and get confidence, and I
- 10:15Speaker 1: loved I did like the creative side of modeling, but
- 10:17Speaker 1: it just was another toxic thing. So he was just
- 10:20Speaker 1: very threatened by everyone else, and he didn't want me
- 10:23Speaker 1: around any other guys and accused me of cheating and
- 10:25Speaker 1: he was off doing it. And then it's usually those ones,
- 10:28Speaker 1: isn't it, The ones that are cheating accuse you of
- 10:30Speaker 1: doing it.
- 10:31Speaker 3: And then the.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Night that I tried, I just I can't even I
- 10:35Speaker 1: don't even know what exactly set me off, but it
- 10:38Speaker 1: was just probably a combination of things that were happening.
- 10:41Speaker 1: It was building up over the years, and I just
- 10:43Speaker 1: didn't want to do it anymore, and I took some
- 10:47Speaker 1: panadine for which is a really strong panotole, and drank
- 10:50Speaker 1: a bottle of vodka trying to end it, and thankfully
- 10:53Speaker 1: it didn't work. I woke up because I did it,
- 10:56Speaker 1: and then went to bed, and then I woke up
- 10:57Speaker 1: with severe stomach cramps and I felt like I was,
- 11:00Speaker 1: you know, my time was now, like I thought, it's happening,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and then I crawled out to the laundry because I
- 11:06Speaker 1: didn't want to wake my mum and sister and went
- 11:10Speaker 1: out there and just dispuwed, and it was yeah, it
- 11:13Speaker 1: all came up, thank God, And I remember I was praying.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I was saying, I'm sorry for doing this, like my
- 11:18Speaker 1: life's worth more, Like something in me told me that
- 11:22Speaker 1: you're worth more, Like you can't end this because it's
- 11:24Speaker 1: going to get better. And it's just as a strange feeling.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But I ended up pulling through, and I feel so
- 11:30Speaker 1: grateful that it didn't happen, and then then I sort
- 11:35Speaker 1: of came good, I guess, and then I was still
- 11:39Speaker 1: quite depressed and anxious and still suffered for a number
- 11:43Speaker 1: of years after that.
- 11:45Speaker 3: But I think it was my mid bit before my
- 11:47Speaker 3: mid twenties.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I was probably around about twenty three when I started
- 11:51Speaker 1: making small changes and I realized that I had to
- 11:54Speaker 1: take control of my life. And I always thought that
- 11:57Speaker 1: someone would come along and save me. That's the mentality
- 11:59Speaker 1: I had, But that doesn't happen. You've got to save yourself.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And I sort of just realized that. And it wasn't
- 12:05Speaker 1: an overnight thing. I didn't say, Okay, well, I'm going
- 12:06Speaker 1: to change things now and get better. It took time,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and I still work out now. Like you can't just
- 12:13Speaker 1: do it and think it's going to be changed forever.
- 12:15Speaker 1: You've got to work on it constantly and not go
- 12:18Speaker 1: back to the way you were. You've got to be
- 12:20Speaker 1: aware of it and aware of the signs of going
- 12:22Speaker 1: back to being depressed. And then when I was twenty four,
- 12:28Speaker 1: nearly twenty five, that's when I started I found health
- 12:32Speaker 1: and fitness. So it was around a similar sort of time.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I decided to make changes in all areas. So I
- 12:37Speaker 1: got healthier, I started moving more, I started changing who
- 12:41Speaker 1: I surrounded myself with. I got rid of a boyfriend
- 12:46Speaker 1: that I was with, and I started having I changed
- 12:48Speaker 1: my perspective so I started having gratitude and appreciating what
- 12:52Speaker 1: I did have and focusing on what I did have
- 12:54Speaker 1: rather than what I did.
- 12:55Speaker 3: And what I lacked.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And then I met my current man now, who I've
- 13:00Speaker 1: been with for eleven years and I have two kids with,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and I was almost twenty five, and he's really into
- 13:06Speaker 1: fitness too, so he supported He was the first guy
- 13:09Speaker 1: that I had who actually supported me. And because I
- 13:13Speaker 1: loved fitness, and I fell in love with it and
- 13:16Speaker 1: the lifestyle and how it made me feel. And it
- 13:18Speaker 1: wasn't about the body, it was about my mind, and
- 13:21Speaker 1: it made me feel strong and powerful and capable of
- 13:24Speaker 1: achieving anything. And he said to me, you can do
- 13:26Speaker 1: anything you want, and I said, I want to do
- 13:28Speaker 1: something in fitness, and I want to reach as many
- 13:30Speaker 1: people as I can and help help them change their
- 13:33Speaker 1: lives in some way, like obviously they have to do
- 13:35Speaker 1: the work, but if fucking inspire them, then I want
- 13:38Speaker 1: to do it. And I just had this really strong
- 13:40Speaker 1: passion for it, and I couldn't stop talking about how
- 13:42Speaker 1: good it made me feel. And I told my friends
- 13:45Speaker 1: and family, you've got to start exercising and eating healthy food.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You feel so good and that's when I started getting
- 13:51Speaker 1: more into fitness and building my online profile. And we're
- 13:53Speaker 1: going back eleven years now, so this is when it's
- 13:56Speaker 1: sort of all kicked off. Fitness wasn't really popularpecially for
- 14:00Speaker 1: women lifting weights, right. I think women did a lot
- 14:03Speaker 1: of the cardio stuff and aerobics and things like that,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and a lot of running and bike and all that,
- 14:09Speaker 1: cross trainers and things. There's nothing wrong with them, but
- 14:12Speaker 1: the benefits of weightlifting are just incredible. And I think women,
- 14:16Speaker 1: well I know women feared lifting weights because it would
- 14:19Speaker 1: make them bulky, but I actually really loved the look
- 14:23Speaker 1: of it. But I loved how it made me feel
- 14:24Speaker 1: so powerful. That's when I started to my journey. I
- 14:28Speaker 1: guess to reach as many as people as I could
- 14:30Speaker 1: around the world. And yeah, I couldn't imagine I get
- 14:34Speaker 1: as far as I have done, but I feel very
- 14:36Speaker 1: grateful for it. But I'm still so passionate about reaching
- 14:39Speaker 1: as many people as I can.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Of course, and there is a fair amount to unpack here.
- 14:44Speaker 2: The first thing to unpack would be you mentioned that
- 14:48Speaker 2: there was a toxicity when it came to getting into modeling,
- 14:52Speaker 2: So talk to me a little bit about what getting
- 14:55Speaker 2: into it at first was like for you and why
- 14:58Speaker 2: you seed in it? Time went on.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I think when I was about fourteen, I was
- 15:06Speaker 1: really shy, and I think my mum just thought if
- 15:10Speaker 1: I did something.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I actually did a modeling and deportment.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Course that was called and she put me in it
- 15:15Speaker 1: and my sister, hoping that it would give us confidence.
- 15:19Speaker 3: And I was worse than my sister. She was a
- 15:20Speaker 3: bit more confident than me, and I just I liked it.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I liked the I guess, to be honest with you,
- 15:28Speaker 1: I liked the attention because I needed I thought the
- 15:30Speaker 1: attention was love, and we all know it's not, because
- 15:34Speaker 1: it's a completely different thing between loving yourself and people
- 15:39Speaker 1: truly loving you and belonging or fitting in. There's a difference.
- 15:43Speaker 1: So I desperately wanted to fit in and have people
- 15:46Speaker 1: love me. But really what I needed was to belong
- 15:49Speaker 1: with the right people who loved me for me, you know,
- 15:52Speaker 1: and the right reasons. But anyway, I liked getting the attention.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I liked people saying that I was pretty or looked
- 15:59Speaker 1: atod in photos.
- 16:00Speaker 3: I had no.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Self worth at all. I thought I was hideous, So
- 16:04Speaker 1: it was really horrible. And I think because I had
- 16:06Speaker 1: a boyfriend that wasn't very nice. He said some horrible
- 16:10Speaker 1: things and always used to tell me I wasn't good enough.
- 16:12Speaker 1: That's what I've always struggled with, not being good enough.
- 16:15Speaker 1: So the modeling sort of, I guess it made me
- 16:18Speaker 1: feel like I could be at the start, but then
- 16:21Speaker 1: I soon found out how toxic it was because it's
- 16:24Speaker 1: so competitive, obviously, and when you're going to castings and
- 16:27Speaker 1: you're getting knocked back ninety five percent of the time,
- 16:31Speaker 1: that's just the worst thing for someone who has no
- 16:33Speaker 1: self worth.
- 16:34Speaker 3: So it just made things worse and worse.
- 16:36Speaker 1: And then I had friends who were in the industry
- 16:38Speaker 1: who were also struggling with self worth issues, so then
- 16:41Speaker 1: when you're competing with them as well, it's just a
- 16:44Speaker 1: horrible environment. So I stayed in it for probably about
- 16:48Speaker 1: twelve years, and then around that time, I think it
- 16:52Speaker 1: was around my mid twenties, that's when I started going
- 16:54Speaker 1: into fitness and I sort of said goodbye to the
- 16:56Speaker 1: whole modeling world and chose being healthy and fit over
- 17:00Speaker 1: just trying to be skinny and trying to look good.
- 17:03Speaker 3: But I'm glad I did.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I decided to get out of it because it really
- 17:07Speaker 1: I mean It's not like this for everyone, I don't think,
- 17:11Speaker 1: But for me, it was just the worst thing for
- 17:13Speaker 1: me to do. Yeah, but I did enjoy I enjoyed
- 17:16Speaker 1: doing photos. I love the creative side of it. I
- 17:18Speaker 1: do photography as well, and I just I love all that.
- 17:21Speaker 1: So it was a love hate relationship really.
- 17:24Speaker 2: And then you mentioned making a series of small changes
- 17:29Speaker 2: that empowered you to pivot from that negative self talk,
- 17:35Speaker 2: that lack of self worth. Talk to me about what
- 17:38Speaker 2: some of those small changes were.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Yeah, So I call this my toolbox, and I have
- 17:44Speaker 1: things that I go to when I'm feeling down, or
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'm feeling overwhelmed, or I start having those negative feelings
- 17:50Speaker 1: or those feelings of I don't believe in myself and
- 17:53Speaker 1: don't think I'm worthy or good enough. I always access
- 17:57Speaker 1: that toolbox and I pull those tools out and work
- 18:00Speaker 1: through them because it helps me. And what's in that
- 18:01Speaker 1: toolbox for me. It's different for everyone, but I have
- 18:05Speaker 1: a few different things. Obviously moving, exercising, lifting weights. I
- 18:10Speaker 1: nourish my body with healthy foods. But then on top
- 18:13Speaker 1: of that, I do things like diaphromatic breathing, which is
- 18:17Speaker 1: a deep breathing and slowing my breath down. Then I
- 18:20Speaker 1: work on being present and not getting overwhelmed by it,
- 18:24Speaker 1: because I have a crazy mind and it never stops
- 18:26Speaker 1: and it's just so out of control that I've got
- 18:29Speaker 1: to calm it down otherwise I go crazy. And then
- 18:32Speaker 1: just I focus on what's around me. So i might
- 18:34Speaker 1: go outside, which is the best thing to do, and
- 18:36Speaker 1: I'll go out barefoot and I'll put my feet on
- 18:38Speaker 1: the ground, and even better if you can get to
- 18:40Speaker 1: the beach and put it your feet in the sand.
- 18:43Speaker 1: But as long as your barefoot on the earth, I
- 18:46Speaker 1: feel like I can sort of download all the crap
- 18:49Speaker 1: and all everything that's making me feel negative and then
- 18:52Speaker 1: recharge with positive things. And I imagine doing that, and
- 18:56Speaker 1: then I'm breathing, and then I'm looking around at nature
- 18:58Speaker 1: and the trees, and if I'm near water, I'll look
- 19:02Speaker 1: at the water and birds and just try to be
- 19:04Speaker 1: present in the moment. And now I've got kids, so
- 19:07Speaker 1: obviously I play with them, and I'm being with them
- 19:11Speaker 1: and truly with them, not on my phone, and half
- 19:13Speaker 1: with them and getting off social media, getting off anything
- 19:17Speaker 1: like computers, phones and things like that. Just having a
- 19:19Speaker 1: break from it is amazing. Also practicing gratitude thinking about
- 19:24Speaker 1: all the amazing things I have in my life, because
- 19:27Speaker 1: we've all got things we don't have or we'd like
- 19:29Speaker 1: to have, but there's no point focusing on it. There's
- 19:31Speaker 1: a difference between wanting it and having a goal and
- 19:34Speaker 1: working towards it. Or you're getting feeling down because you
- 19:37Speaker 1: don't have these things and it's affecting you negatively. So
- 19:41Speaker 1: I just look at everything I've got and how grateful
- 19:43Speaker 1: I am and how blessed I am to have these things.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And they're not things, funny enough, they're people, my family
- 19:49Speaker 1: and friends.
- 19:51Speaker 3: And then another thing I do.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I'll go for a walk, or my favorite is dancing,
- 19:56Speaker 1: and I'm not a good dancer at all.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I'm probably the worst dancer.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I put my favorite music on and dance around the
- 20:02Speaker 1: house and just anything that makes me feel.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Good is what I do. And I love Brene Brown.
- 20:07Speaker 1: So she's a researcher and storyteller and she's done ted
- 20:12Speaker 1: talks and she's amazing. She's got many books now, and
- 20:16Speaker 1: she's just someone that I relate to a lot, and
- 20:17Speaker 1: she really really helps me. So if I'm really feeling down,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I'll put one of her talks on and she has
- 20:24Speaker 1: audio books as well, which I love, and then I'll
- 20:27Speaker 1: listen to her and after five minutes I'm feeling better already.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So there's a few different things I do, and I
- 20:32Speaker 1: work through each one until I'm better.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Basically well, I too, huge fan of Brene Brown. I
- 20:38Speaker 2: know many of the hurdlers. Are you talked about putting
- 20:42Speaker 2: your feet in the sand, going out barefoot. So much
- 20:45Speaker 2: research on the benefits of what's commonly referred to as grounding,
- 20:49Speaker 2: I mean, fighting off chronic fatigue, fighting off chronic pain,
- 20:53Speaker 2: dealing with anxiety and depression, managing sleep disorders, fighting against
- 20:57Speaker 2: cardiovascular disease. I mean so much. It's so much benefits
- 21:01Speaker 2: to just being out in nature a calming thing, especially
- 21:05Speaker 2: for me, like that early morning run, getting out, even
- 21:08Speaker 2: how I'm in New York City or whirled away from
- 21:11Speaker 2: any naceand or a bitch, just getting out and hearing
- 21:15Speaker 2: nature and finding some stillness before the entire world gets
- 21:18Speaker 2: to move. Oh, it's just one big deep ax.
- 21:22Speaker 3: How it's the best, isn't it.
- 21:24Speaker 1: So many people start the day by picking up their
- 21:26Speaker 1: phone and they're going they go straight into social media,
- 21:29Speaker 1: and it's so busy and everyone's on there. It's overloading
- 21:31Speaker 1: the brain, and then you're feeling overwhelmed and not really
- 21:35Speaker 1: positive because a lot of stuff isn't positive and you're
- 21:38Speaker 1: not even noticing a lot of it. It's all just
- 21:40Speaker 1: it's going into your brain, but you're not really aware
- 21:42Speaker 1: of it, and it's too much. So I like to
- 21:45Speaker 1: start the day by not just getting my phone straight away.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Obviously I'll check if someone's message or try to call
- 21:50Speaker 1: it's important, but then I put it down and I
- 21:52Speaker 1: just start my day. Usually I do a bit of
- 21:54Speaker 1: skincare because I've got James Cosmetics that I own, and
- 21:56Speaker 1: I put my masks on.
- 21:58Speaker 3: It makes me feel good.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I have my routine in the more, I do my
- 22:00Speaker 1: breathing exercises and spend time with my kids, and then
- 22:03Speaker 1: I'll pick up the phone. I think it's the best
- 22:04Speaker 1: way to start rather than just straight on that phone.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Oh for sure. And I'm sure that. I mean. Over
- 22:10Speaker 2: the years, as you have Garner, quite the following you
- 22:14Speaker 2: probably went through different feasas where you felt like you
- 22:17Speaker 2: had a lot of control with your relationship with the
- 22:21Speaker 2: social media, versus like maybe feeling like things were a
- 22:24Speaker 2: little out of control. Talk to me a little bit
- 22:26Speaker 2: about that.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Yeah, well, social media has come a long way since
- 22:30Speaker 1: the beginning. And when I first started, the algorithm was
- 22:34Speaker 1: a lot different and you could control what you're doing,
- 22:36Speaker 1: and the people that were following you would see what
- 22:38Speaker 1: you're doing. And now not many people see it, and
- 22:42Speaker 1: it's so big too, So I mean, like my following,
- 22:46Speaker 1: there's so many people there, so it can get really
- 22:48Speaker 1: overwhelming for me because everything that I put out there,
- 22:51Speaker 1: and I'm sure a lot of people get this with
- 22:54Speaker 1: large followings, when you put it out there, it's out
- 22:56Speaker 1: there and everyone's seen it, and there's so many judgments
- 22:59Speaker 1: and criticisms and people always have something to say and
- 23:02Speaker 1: we always want to voice their opinions and their opinions right.
- 23:05Speaker 3: And it can be a lot.
- 23:06Speaker 1: So if you're not prepared for that, then yeah, it
- 23:10Speaker 1: can be really bad for you.
- 23:12Speaker 3: And you've got to make sure that you're strong enough
- 23:14Speaker 3: to be able to deal with it and resilient. That's
- 23:16Speaker 3: something that I've worked on for years.
- 23:17Speaker 1: So I think I work on it in my real
- 23:20Speaker 1: life offline as well as online, being resilient, working on
- 23:25Speaker 1: not worrying about what other people think of you, which
- 23:28Speaker 1: is so hard and it's easier said than done.
- 23:30Speaker 3: But everyone's got an opinion.
- 23:32Speaker 1: And once you put yourself out there, and this is
- 23:35Speaker 1: what I learned through Brene Brown as well.
- 23:37Speaker 3: If you put yourself out there and you're going to be.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Seen in the world, there are going to be judgments
- 23:43Speaker 1: and criticisms. You can't avoid it. And if you want
- 23:45Speaker 1: to avoid it, you've got to stay at home and
- 23:47Speaker 1: not do anything. And then even then, if you're online,
- 23:49Speaker 1: you're still out there, you know what I mean. So
- 23:52Speaker 1: social media has given everyone this way to be out
- 23:55Speaker 1: there in front of everyone's eyes all around the world,
- 23:57Speaker 1: but you have to know that you're going to get
- 23:59Speaker 1: thesems and you've got to be prepared for it. But
- 24:01Speaker 1: it's just part of being out there and being seen
- 24:04Speaker 1: and taking that step and having the confidence to put
- 24:07Speaker 1: yourself out there. And that's something that I've dealt with
- 24:10Speaker 1: a lot, and I've come a long way, and I
- 24:12Speaker 1: still have times when I feel like it's too much. Actually,
- 24:16Speaker 1: when I was pregnant the last time, towards the end
- 24:18Speaker 1: of my pregnancy, I was getting really overwhelmed with a
- 24:21Speaker 1: lot of stuff that was happening online. I mean, we've
- 24:23Speaker 1: had a crazy year and a half, haven't we. With
- 24:26Speaker 1: everything that's gone on, and I'm very sensitive and I
- 24:29Speaker 1: take a long I take on a lot of stuff
- 24:32Speaker 1: that's happening and other people sort of I get messages
- 24:35Speaker 1: and people need help all the time, and I want
- 24:37Speaker 1: to help everyone, and I get so overwhelmed by it
- 24:39Speaker 1: because you cannot help everyone and you can't please everyone.
- 24:43Speaker 1: So I ended up just saying, Okay, I need to
- 24:45Speaker 1: have a break from this because I'm I'm at the
- 24:47Speaker 1: end of my pregnancy.
- 24:48Speaker 3: I'm getting really stressed out.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I couldn't breathe properly, and I thought, I've got to
- 24:53Speaker 1: make changes here.
- 24:54Speaker 3: So I got off social media for a couple of
- 24:56Speaker 3: weeks and.
- 24:57Speaker 1: It was the best thing I ever did, and I
- 24:58Speaker 1: felt so freshed and recharged, and I felt like when
- 25:03Speaker 1: I came back on that I was capable of I
- 25:06Speaker 1: could sort of deal with anything that was sort of
- 25:09Speaker 1: throwing my way, and I was strong enough to I
- 25:10Speaker 1: sort of veat off topic there.
- 25:11Speaker 2: But no, no, I think it's important. And with the
- 25:15Speaker 2: magnitude of what you're doing over on social like, is
- 25:19Speaker 2: this you the person that's running all of this or
- 25:22Speaker 2: how do you navigate that?
- 25:24Speaker 1: Yeah, So I don't let anyone touch my Instagram. I've
- 25:28Speaker 1: got a Facebook page. I think it's eleven million or
- 25:30Speaker 1: something like that on there. I'm not on there as
- 25:32Speaker 1: much as I used to be. I used to be
- 25:34Speaker 1: on there a lot myself, reading all the messages, but
- 25:37Speaker 1: it got too much, and a lot of them are
- 25:39Speaker 1: customer service questions about my fitness program. So I do
- 25:43Speaker 1: have a customer service team that manage all that for me,
- 25:46Speaker 1: but I won't let them touch my Instagram. It's too
- 25:48Speaker 1: personal and I feel like I need to be on
- 25:51Speaker 1: there myself doing it. But I mean, you can't have everything,
- 25:54Speaker 1: so if it is just me, then I'm the only
- 25:56Speaker 1: one that's dealing with everything. And obviously I can't get
- 26:00Speaker 1: through all the dms, but I try so I sort
- 26:02Speaker 1: of scheming through and try to. I try to answer
- 26:06Speaker 1: as many as I can, but yeah, sometimes some days,
- 26:08Speaker 1: depending what I do, especially in my story, you know,
- 26:11Speaker 1: people can reply to stories, there's sometimes several thousand and
- 26:14Speaker 1: there's no way anyone can.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Get through that.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love

- 29:07Speaker 2: I think is really great to highlight as well, when
- 29:09Speaker 2: you were talking about the importance of kind of going
- 29:13Speaker 2: back to your purpose and understanding that if you want
- 29:16Speaker 2: to affect change, which you said as you came into
- 29:18Speaker 2: your mid twenties with something that you really came to
- 29:21Speaker 2: understand was part of your purpose and part of your mission,
- 29:24Speaker 2: that you're going to have to get comfortable with being
- 29:26Speaker 2: a little bit uncomfortable and understanding Heerberne Brown that you're
- 29:30Speaker 2: not going to be a person for everyone.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Yep, you cannot please every single person, and if you
- 29:37Speaker 1: try to, only sacrificing your own happiness. And that's something
- 29:40Speaker 1: I learned to and I always used to do that.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I actually put a few quotes up recently. It's funny
- 29:45Speaker 1: we're talking about it now, But yeah, I feel like
- 29:48Speaker 1: I need I always feel like I need to please everyone.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I don't know why I'm a people pleaser and That's
- 29:53Speaker 1: why I have to be aware of it and make
- 29:55Speaker 1: sure that I'm not sacrificing my own happiness to make
- 29:59Speaker 1: everyone else ha which you can't achieve anyway.
- 30:02Speaker 3: And there's nothing wrong with wanting other.
- 30:04Speaker 1: People to be happy if the people you love like
- 30:06Speaker 1: your family. But there's a difference between giving up your
- 30:10Speaker 1: own happiness for people that you barely know you know,
- 30:12Speaker 1: especially people on social media.
- 30:15Speaker 3: It just can't be done.
- 30:16Speaker 2: It cannot be done. And I actually think that's a
- 30:19Speaker 2: really great point, is that a lot of the time,
- 30:21Speaker 2: the individuals that may be coming at you with unsolicited
- 30:24Speaker 2: feedback or criticism, these are people that you don't know personally,
- 30:29Speaker 2: whether you know you do again have one hundred followers
- 30:33Speaker 2: or millions of followers. Something that I've really thought a
- 30:36Speaker 2: lot about myself in the past year is like, am
- 30:39Speaker 2: I putting enough energy into the the people I know
- 30:42Speaker 2: dearly in my own life as I am putting energy
- 30:46Speaker 2: into the people that I do not know in my life.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Yes, and energy can be even just thinking about it
- 30:52Speaker 1: or letting them affect you in some way. And I've
- 30:55Speaker 1: had this sort of I guess it was a realization.
- 30:58Speaker 1: It was a couple of weeks ago, and I go
- 31:01Speaker 1: through these cycles of sometimes I'm really strong and resilient,
- 31:05Speaker 1: I don't care what people say, I'm fine, and then
- 31:07Speaker 1: other times, if I'm at a lower point, everything affects
- 31:10Speaker 1: me and I just I can't even deal with it.
- 31:13Speaker 3: So if you get that, if you get me.
- 31:15Speaker 1: In that moment where I'm feeling a little bit down
- 31:17Speaker 1: or maybe haven't been exercising for a week or something,
- 31:19Speaker 1: because that definitely affects me too, and my confidence and
- 31:22Speaker 1: my resilience. The other day, so I was like two
- 31:26Speaker 1: weeks ago, some people were saying some things and I
- 31:29Speaker 1: sort of let them get to me. And you've got
- 31:31Speaker 1: to understand, too, people need to be responsible for the
- 31:33Speaker 1: way people affect you, for the way you allow them
- 31:36Speaker 1: to affect you. You can't control what they do, but
- 31:39Speaker 1: you can control how you let them affect you, or
- 31:42Speaker 1: if you let them, And you've got to take control
- 31:44Speaker 1: of that and not use it as an excuse and
- 31:47Speaker 1: let them beat you down and keep you there. So
- 31:50Speaker 1: this is something I've been dealing with for many years,
- 31:52Speaker 1: and it came up again two weeks ago and people
- 31:55Speaker 1: were saying these things and I was really grumpy and
- 31:58Speaker 1: I was taking it out of my kids and my partner,
- 32:01Speaker 1: and I was just feeling horrible and those depressive kind
- 32:04Speaker 1: of feelings, and then I thought, what am I doing.
- 32:08Speaker 1: I'm allowing this person who I've never met, who doesn't
- 32:10Speaker 1: know me or care about me, affect me and affect
- 32:14Speaker 1: my real life and the way I am with my kids,
- 32:16Speaker 1: and they're taking that moment away that I could have
- 32:20Speaker 1: with my kids and have a great time that you
- 32:22Speaker 1: can never get back.
- 32:22Speaker 3: You can't get that.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Time back, and I'm letting them hijacket and take it away.
- 32:27Speaker 3: And I thought, I'm not going to do this.
- 32:29Speaker 1: I'm not allowing them to and I have this process
- 32:31Speaker 1: and this might sound silly, and you can find your
- 32:34Speaker 1: own way of dealing with it. This is what I do,
- 32:36Speaker 1: and there's probably some name for it too, but I
- 32:38Speaker 1: don't know it. But when these people put their negative
- 32:41Speaker 1: comments or they throw those horrible negative things my way,
- 32:45Speaker 1: I imagine them like cords and they're attached to me
- 32:48Speaker 1: in my chest and they're taking away all my positive energy.
- 32:51Speaker 1: And then I imagine cutting it like my arm's a knife,
- 32:55Speaker 1: and I cut the cords, and then I envision this
- 33:00Speaker 1: them getting sent away, so I actually push them away
- 33:02Speaker 1: and I send them back to where they came from.
- 33:05Speaker 1: And if I get those feelings back to where I'm
- 33:07Speaker 1: letting them get to me again, I do it again.
- 33:09Speaker 1: I'll keep doing the same process and push it away
- 33:11Speaker 1: and just visualizing that that like, being able to see
- 33:15Speaker 1: that process helps me so much and I feel like
- 33:17Speaker 1: I'm set free. So I'll do that. And there's so
- 33:20Speaker 1: many ways you can do that too. You get to
- 33:22Speaker 1: find what works for you.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Such a helpful tool and such a helpful visualization. I
- 33:27Speaker 2: think also something that you were mentioning before that once
- 33:31Speaker 2: you started to move your body, you discovered or perhaps
- 33:35Speaker 2: rediscovered a sense of self worth that had been lost
- 33:39Speaker 2: along your journey. And that's something that I can certainly
- 33:42Speaker 2: relate to as well. When I was in college, I
- 33:46Speaker 2: was very much overweight. And that wasn't problematic because of necessarily,
- 33:53Speaker 2: you know, looking out at the scale and seeing a
- 33:55Speaker 2: certain number, but more so because I looked in the
- 33:58Speaker 2: mirror and I wasn't happy. I felt, I didn't love
- 34:01Speaker 2: how I felt, I didn't feel confident. In fact, at
- 34:04Speaker 2: times I would say that I was definitely depressed. And
- 34:07Speaker 2: so for me, when I started to move my body,
- 34:10Speaker 2: I started to discover similar as to you, a sense
- 34:14Speaker 2: of self worth that I didn't feel before, and it
- 34:17Speaker 2: encouraged me and motivated me to then go after other
- 34:21Speaker 2: things that I wanted in my life, whether that was
- 34:24Speaker 2: to perform better in my academics, or to go out
- 34:27Speaker 2: of my comfort zone and try to make new friends,
- 34:29Speaker 2: or perhaps connect with someone romantically in a way that
- 34:32Speaker 2: maybe I wasn't comfortable doing before. So I think that's
- 34:35Speaker 2: really important and a really big point to stress is
- 34:37Speaker 2: that for so many movement really can be that gateway
- 34:42Speaker 2: for more so for you. As you started to move
- 34:45Speaker 2: your body, as you started to feel similarly what doors
- 34:49Speaker 2: started to open up.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Yeah, And this is what I'm always telling people to it.
- 34:54Speaker 1: When you start moving, that feeling, the pawerful feeling that
- 34:58Speaker 1: you capable of so much, translates into other areas of.
- 35:01Speaker 3: Your life and you feel like you can do anything.
- 35:04Speaker 1: And it did for me, and I got this confidence
- 35:06Speaker 1: I never had before. I felt because obviously you getting
- 35:10Speaker 1: doorphins and all the hormones that are released when you exercise.
- 35:14Speaker 3: It makes you feel so amazing.
- 35:15Speaker 1: And I notice the difference when I haven't been exercising
- 35:18Speaker 1: for a little bit, which is it's rare. It was
- 35:20Speaker 1: more around when I was pregnant, I couldn't even string
- 35:23Speaker 1: a sentence together. I mean, I struggle now too, but
- 35:25Speaker 1: I blame that on baby brain. But I just I
- 35:28Speaker 1: didn't feel like I could. It was almost like I
- 35:30Speaker 1: was living under a cloud and I was all foggy.
- 35:32Speaker 1: But exercise removes all that for me. And I know
- 35:36Speaker 1: a lot of people are the same, and you just
- 35:37Speaker 1: said before, but I just felt like I'm so powerful,
- 35:42Speaker 1: I'm so strong, I'm so capable, and I tell myself
- 35:45Speaker 1: these things, and when I'm exercising, I go really hard,
- 35:48Speaker 1: and I even tell myself that while I'm exercising, to
- 35:51Speaker 1: push me to my limits, and that I can achieve
- 35:54Speaker 1: so much more than I think I can, and we
- 35:56Speaker 1: are so.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Amazing and powerful.
- 35:58Speaker 1: And after I had my kids, I felt even more
- 36:00Speaker 1: more amazing and powerful. And then I felt like I
- 36:02Speaker 1: could do anything. Anything that I wanted in my life,
- 36:05Speaker 1: I could actually do. And that's when I started my
- 36:08Speaker 1: fitness business. Easily a decade ago, I think it was,
- 36:12Speaker 1: Oh no, was it a decade ago? Maybe eight years
- 36:14Speaker 1: ago something like that. I actually started a business. So
- 36:17Speaker 1: I started building my profile around fitness. But then I
- 36:21Speaker 1: made it a business roughly seven or eight years ago,
- 36:24Speaker 1: I don't know. I lose track a while ago, and
- 36:27Speaker 1: I loved it. I love I still love what I do.
- 36:29Speaker 1: My program has evolved so much since back then. It
- 36:33Speaker 1: used to be a PDF, and now it's an app
- 36:35Speaker 1: that's got everything you could imagine in it. It's got
- 36:38Speaker 1: pregnancy post and atal it's got things for beginners.
- 36:41Speaker 3: If you're at a higher level training, you can do that.
- 36:44Speaker 1: There's so many different programs and challenges on there now,
- 36:47Speaker 1: and I just feel like I wouldn't have been able
- 36:49Speaker 1: to do any of that if I hadn't unlocked.
- 36:52Speaker 3: Like you're saying, you sort of unlock.
- 36:55Speaker 1: I don't know what you call it, but it opens
- 36:57Speaker 1: yourself up to being able to achieve these things that
- 37:00Speaker 1: I thought you could do before that you didn't think
- 37:01Speaker 1: were possible. It's like it gives you more possibilities.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you're I mean, you're unlarking your own potential.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. That's the best way to put it, much
- 37:12Speaker 3: better with words than me.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:13Speaker 3: So I started that and I thought, this is like incredible.
- 37:18Speaker 3: I loved it. I was passionate about it.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, though, it was a lot of
- 37:20Speaker 1: hard work, and it still is anything you don't when
- 37:23Speaker 1: you do your passion, like when you have your passion
- 37:25Speaker 1: as a job, it's not like this dream job. There's
- 37:28Speaker 1: still a lot of hard work, and I think people
- 37:29Speaker 1: aren't misunderstand that you still have to work really, really hard.
- 37:32Speaker 1: But I knew I could do it because I got
- 37:35Speaker 1: through my mental health issues and I train really hard
- 37:38Speaker 1: and I can do all these other things.
- 37:40Speaker 3: I can do this too.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And I started James Cosmetics with my friend and my
- 37:44Speaker 1: manager Sam, and we've had that for four years now,
- 37:47Speaker 1: and so like it's sort of I've gone into different things.
- 37:50Speaker 1: But when people ask me what's my biggest accomplishment, it's
- 37:53Speaker 1: not getting on I've been on how many magazine covers
- 37:58Speaker 1: like Women's Health many many times different magazines. Or it's
- 38:01Speaker 1: not being on TV or being on the Forbes list,
- 38:04Speaker 1: or it's not these things, which don't get me wrong,
- 38:06Speaker 1: they're still amazing. But for me, my biggest accomplishment is
- 38:10Speaker 1: overcoming my own mental health issues and my confidence and
- 38:14Speaker 1: make my self worth issues. So I've been able to
- 38:16Speaker 1: come so far personally that that outweighs anything else. It's
- 38:21Speaker 1: so much better than any other achievement I could achieve
- 38:24Speaker 1: in my career.
- 38:26Speaker 2: For someone who may be struggling with their own mental
- 38:31Speaker 2: health battles, what would be one jumping off point, one
- 38:36Speaker 2: piece of advice that you would offer to them to
- 38:39Speaker 2: be a life raft, to be the lifeboat that helps
- 38:42Speaker 2: them make a change.
- 38:45Speaker 3: You have to be the lifeboat.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Seriously, like I had to realize that it was up
- 38:50Speaker 1: to me to make those changes. Don't wait for anyone
- 38:53Speaker 1: else to do it. Of course, you can get support
- 38:55Speaker 1: and don't be ashamed to get support from people who
- 38:58Speaker 1: are either close with you that can about you and
- 39:01Speaker 1: know what they're doing, because you can get the wrong
- 39:03Speaker 1: person too, that can hold you back. They may love you,
- 39:05Speaker 1: but they might not be the right person. But that's
- 39:08Speaker 1: where professionals come into. So get professional help and don't
- 39:11Speaker 1: be ashamed. That's one of the biggest things. But you
- 39:14Speaker 1: still have to do the work. So you have to
- 39:17Speaker 1: when you go home. It's like training. If you want
- 39:19Speaker 1: to get fit, you can't go once a week or
- 39:21Speaker 1: once a fortnight and expect to get changes. You have
- 39:25Speaker 1: to be consistent and go five times a week or
- 39:28Speaker 1: whatever that number is. You've got to do it many
- 39:31Speaker 1: times and then you'll see changes and you'll feel changes
- 39:33Speaker 1: and you'll get fit.
- 39:34Speaker 3: But if you're.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Just going once every now and then, you're not going
- 39:38Speaker 1: to get anywhere. So it's the same with your mental health.
- 39:40Speaker 1: You need to be consistent with it and work on
- 39:42Speaker 1: it every single day. And I still work on it.
- 39:45Speaker 1: So I went through depression years ago, I went through anxiety.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I still get anxiety every now and then. Now it
- 39:50Speaker 1: doesn't completely go away. You just stay on top of
- 39:53Speaker 1: it and you become aware of when you're starting to
- 39:56Speaker 1: get dragged back down, and you can make changes and
- 39:58Speaker 1: you can do things that that help you move forward.
- 40:02Speaker 3: And overcome it. I guess, and stay on top of it.
- 40:05Speaker 1: But yeah, the biggest thing that I can say is
- 40:07Speaker 1: that you have to realize that you have to do
- 40:11Speaker 1: the work, but you are worth it.
- 40:13Speaker 3: You are worth it like you are worthy. You are
- 40:16Speaker 3: meant to be here.
- 40:17Speaker 1: You're born for a reason, and you can have whatever
- 40:21Speaker 1: you want in your life and obviously within reason, but
- 40:25Speaker 1: you just have to And this is what I would
- 40:27Speaker 1: tell myself if I went back and spoke to myself
- 40:30Speaker 1: as a teenager, to hang on, to keep going forward
- 40:35Speaker 1: and believe in yourself that whatever there is out there
- 40:39Speaker 1: that you want. You can achieve it, but you have
- 40:41Speaker 1: to do the work. No one else can do it
- 40:43Speaker 1: for you. So there's people that struggle with these issues,
- 40:48Speaker 1: mental health issues, and they just always go to someone
- 40:51Speaker 1: else expecting them to help them, which they can, but
- 40:54Speaker 1: they can only support.
- 40:56Speaker 3: You have to do it. I think I've stressed that enough.
- 40:58Speaker 3: Do you think to do it?
- 41:00Speaker 2: I totally understand. I totally see where you're coming from.
- 41:03Speaker 2: I recently had a conversation with Alexi Papas. She's a runner,
- 41:06Speaker 2: and she's very vocal about dealing with her own depression
- 41:09Speaker 2: and mental health struggles, and something that I think is
- 41:12Speaker 2: super valuable that she said to me, which I'll share
- 41:14Speaker 2: with you, is thinking about depression is having an injury
- 41:19Speaker 2: on your brain, and just as though with any sort
- 41:22Speaker 2: of physical injury, where you would talk to a physical
- 41:25Speaker 2: therapist and get a sex set of exercises and start
- 41:28Speaker 2: doing rehab, and then learning from that experience that when
- 41:31Speaker 2: you have injuries going forward, you can go back to
- 41:33Speaker 2: those exercises knowing that if you put in the time
- 41:36Speaker 2: and if you put in the work, you can help
- 41:39Speaker 2: your body get better. The same thing goes for mental
- 41:43Speaker 2: health and depression and dealing with the difficulties that come
- 41:48Speaker 2: hand in hand with that understanding that we have the
- 41:51Speaker 2: power to establish and come up with, as you called it,
- 41:55Speaker 2: a toolbox, and then use that toolbox when things feel hard,
- 42:00Speaker 2: regardless of whether it's a few days in a row,
- 42:03Speaker 2: if it's different. So a few years apart, going back
- 42:06Speaker 2: to that toolbox and realizing that there are things in
- 42:08Speaker 2: yours to help you get to where you want to
- 42:10Speaker 2: be and get to a better place.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, definitely, And you need to sit there, like
- 42:17Speaker 1: even today and write a list of things or in
- 42:20Speaker 1: your phone or wherever somewhere you can access easily, and
- 42:23Speaker 1: write a list of things that make you feel better,
- 42:25Speaker 1: that you enjoy doing that you can then go to
- 42:28Speaker 1: and that can be your toolbox. So if you're feeling shitty,
- 42:30Speaker 1: you can go to that and work through it. But
- 42:32Speaker 1: you have to do it and stay on top of it.
- 42:34Speaker 1: And when you start having those feelings, act before it
- 42:37Speaker 1: gets too too late. And it's never too late, but
- 42:39Speaker 1: you want to get on top of it sooner rather
- 42:41Speaker 1: than later.
- 42:42Speaker 3: But we all have struggled.
- 42:44Speaker 2: I love what you said there about having a list
- 42:47Speaker 2: that you can go to of things that make you happy.
- 42:49Speaker 2: I remember during COVID and we're talking about how the
- 42:52Speaker 2: past year, year and change has definitely been a difficult time.
- 42:56Speaker 2: I remember as many of my friends were leaving New York,
- 42:59Speaker 2: I needed to sit down and make a list of
- 43:01Speaker 2: the things that I can do in my life on
- 43:03Speaker 2: my own that I can rely on myself for that
- 43:05Speaker 2: bring me joy.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, if you're feeling good too, you know those feelings,
- 43:11Speaker 1: so it'll flow and come easily. When you're feeling down,
- 43:14Speaker 1: it's hard to come up with things that make you
- 43:17Speaker 1: feel good. So you've got to do it when you're
- 43:18Speaker 1: in a good sort of place. I mean, there's any
- 43:20Speaker 1: any times better than no time. But when you're feeling
- 43:23Speaker 1: good and you know what makes you feel good, then
- 43:26Speaker 1: write the list down and say, if you have a
- 43:27Speaker 1: good day and you go out and I don't know
- 43:29Speaker 1: what you do ab sailing or something crazy, write it
- 43:31Speaker 1: down and go, this made me feel good, and then
- 43:33Speaker 1: you can access it.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Definitely, access is important. So you have talked about the
- 43:39Speaker 2: growth of your presence and transitioning from your beginnings and
- 43:44Speaker 2: fitness to now having a thriving APP. I think what
- 43:48Speaker 2: could be really helpful for individuals listening who are maybe
- 43:52Speaker 2: in the fitness and wellness industry interested in either following
- 43:55Speaker 2: a similar path or just gaining some more understanding about
- 43:57Speaker 2: how it is that you got to be in this
- 44:00Speaker 2: position to shut a little bit more late on going
- 44:03Speaker 2: from those early stages and what those look like to
- 44:06Speaker 2: getting to our point now where or getting to this
- 44:10Speaker 2: point as the years went on, where you were in
- 44:12Speaker 2: a place to launch an out like this.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Yeah, So I guess when I first started to I
- 44:19Speaker 1: wanted to create something for other people, and I wasn't
- 44:22Speaker 1: sure exactly what that was because we're going back when
- 44:25Speaker 1: there was no such thing as a fitness program, like
- 44:28Speaker 1: there were things you'd see on those infomercials or something.
- 44:32Speaker 1: I wanted something that would be it would make fitness
- 44:35Speaker 1: accessible and there was no barriers for entry, so people
- 44:38Speaker 1: could just do something that would make them feel good.
- 44:41Speaker 1: And that's when I started building my Facebook and my
- 44:44Speaker 1: Instagram because I was posting a lot of free workout
- 44:47Speaker 1: videos and helpful sort of posts like things that were
- 44:50Speaker 1: for free. And this is a mistake a lot of
- 44:52Speaker 1: people make too when they're starting businesses. They want to
- 44:54Speaker 1: hold everything back and make sure everyone pays for everything,
- 44:57Speaker 1: but you've got to put out things for free that
- 45:00Speaker 1: are going to help people, because otherwise you're not really
- 45:03Speaker 1: achieving anything. Or not for me anyway, I'd rather just
- 45:06Speaker 1: give a lot of free stuff that people can can
- 45:08Speaker 1: do that will make them feel better, and then if
- 45:10Speaker 1: they want more, they can then enter into your program
- 45:14Speaker 1: whatever it is that you're selling. So every single day
- 45:16Speaker 1: I was putting out a workout video so people could
- 45:18Speaker 1: just get fit at home and not have to spend
- 45:21Speaker 1: a cent. And then I guess that sort of they
- 45:24Speaker 1: built trust in me, and they realized that I had
- 45:27Speaker 1: good workouts and I was someone that they could trust,
- 45:30Speaker 1: and they wanted more. And then I developed my program
- 45:34Speaker 1: that had so it was a PDF back in the day,
- 45:36Speaker 1: and they'd access everything on my website. And then I
- 45:40Speaker 1: created an app that was a free app as well,
- 45:43Speaker 1: because I mean, I'm not really good at business, to
- 45:45Speaker 1: be honest with you, because I want to give everything
- 45:47Speaker 1: away for free. But it was an app that had
- 45:51Speaker 1: it was called Daily Workouts, so they'd get a workout
- 45:54Speaker 1: every single day that they could do and follow along
- 45:56Speaker 1: on the app, and it was really easy to use.
- 45:59Speaker 1: And then as years went on, I wanted to make
- 46:02Speaker 1: the app have more and more in it, so they're
- 46:06Speaker 1: are meal plan so to this day, there's meal plans
- 46:08Speaker 1: that are customizable, so you can pick and choose what
- 46:11Speaker 1: you want to eat. You can choose how many people
- 46:13Speaker 1: you're cooking for. It spits out a shopping list to
- 46:15Speaker 1: make it easy, and if there's something you can't eat,
- 46:18Speaker 1: you put that in there and you can do like
- 46:20Speaker 1: dairy free or vegetarian or whatever. And then there's multiple
- 46:25Speaker 1: challenges and programs. I think there's about seven now. So
- 46:29Speaker 1: there's the daily workouts in the app. Then there's the
- 46:32Speaker 1: Start Strong program, which is for beginners. It's a really basic,
- 46:36Speaker 1: fundamental program that will go back to basics and teach
- 46:39Speaker 1: you how to do form for each exercise. Then I've
- 46:42Speaker 1: got the pregnancy program with different stages of pregnancy, the
- 46:45Speaker 1: three trimesters and two different intensities that.
- 46:47Speaker 3: You can choose from.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Then there's the post natal program that's each it's got
- 46:52Speaker 1: six week blocks, so it goes through each phase so
- 46:56Speaker 1: as you get stronger. It's sort of getting women strong
- 46:59Speaker 1: enough to get back into normal fitness because there's a
- 47:02Speaker 1: lot of obviously a lot of changes that happen when
- 47:04Speaker 1: you're pregnant with your ab separation and your pelvic flow
- 47:08Speaker 1: not being as strong or functioning as well as it
- 47:10Speaker 1: was before. And you've got relaxing, which is a hormone
- 47:12Speaker 1: that softens all your ligaments, so you've got to do
- 47:16Speaker 1: certain sort of training that takes that into account. So
- 47:19Speaker 1: it goes through all that, and I've got experts that
- 47:21Speaker 1: work on it as well. Then there's the Booty program,
- 47:23Speaker 1: there's ABS to Core, there's Body sculpt which is the
- 47:27Speaker 1: most recent one. That's a full body workout, which is
- 47:30Speaker 1: at home stuff. So I've really made sure there's a
- 47:32Speaker 1: lot of at home workouts, especially because of COVID and
- 47:35Speaker 1: people can't get to the gym, so there's no excuse.
- 47:38Speaker 1: You can get fit at home, in your laundroom or
- 47:40Speaker 1: in your backyard. So it's pretty much got everything now.
- 47:44Speaker 1: I mean there's always more. I'll keep adding, but it's
- 47:47Speaker 1: just it's endless and they can choose what they want
- 47:49Speaker 1: to do and what their goal is, whether it's to
- 47:51Speaker 1: build strength and muscle or lose body fat. Yeah, it's
- 47:56Speaker 1: pretty much all song and dance. Very happy with it.
- 47:59Speaker 1: It's come a long way.
- 48:00Speaker 2: And you mentioned nutritional programs and of course the diversity
- 48:04Speaker 2: that happens within the app in terms of the programming
- 48:07Speaker 2: and working with other experts. I think that this is
- 48:10Speaker 2: a really important chord to make sure that we hit
- 48:13Speaker 2: on here, is that you are working with experts outside
- 48:16Speaker 2: of being a certified personal trainer yourself.
- 48:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and I can't do everything. I'd like to think
- 48:23Speaker 3: I can, but I can't.
- 48:24Speaker 1: And I've got doctors on there as well, and physios,
- 48:27Speaker 1: I've got mental health experts. I don't want to be
- 48:30Speaker 1: the person that sits there going, oh no, it's all
- 48:32Speaker 1: me and I'm the only one that can help you
- 48:34Speaker 1: here I need to. I think it's so important to
- 48:37Speaker 1: have many people working together and everyone's experts in their
- 48:40Speaker 1: own field, and together we can help people. And I
- 48:44Speaker 1: also love the idea of having because they're all women too,
- 48:47Speaker 1: And I love that we're all women that are all
- 48:50Speaker 1: good at our different things and we're all supporting each
- 48:52Speaker 1: other like this is in the app. Like the people
- 48:56Speaker 1: that work on the app and part of my fit fit.
- 48:59Speaker 1: I don't know what you can like the fit fam that,
- 49:02Speaker 1: like the doctor's experts, all those people. I love that
- 49:04Speaker 1: we're all working together and supporting each other, and it's
- 49:07Speaker 1: really empowering as well as also having my fit fam
- 49:11Speaker 1: as in the people that are part of the program
- 49:13Speaker 1: that have bought into it. They're all so amazing. We're
- 49:16Speaker 1: all women that come together. We want to see each
- 49:19Speaker 1: other succeed, and we support each other, and we have
- 49:22Speaker 1: different goals but similar We want to get better and
- 49:24Speaker 1: we want to feel better mentally and physically, and it's
- 49:26Speaker 1: about the feeling. How you feel so much more important
- 49:29Speaker 1: than how you look. It doesn't mean you don't want
- 49:31Speaker 1: to look good or it's bad to want to look good,
- 49:33Speaker 1: but not at the detriment of your health. So it's
- 49:36Speaker 1: just such a really amazing feeling knowing that we're literally
- 49:40Speaker 1: hundreds of thousands of women that are just all in
- 49:44Speaker 1: this together and we all want to see each other succeed.
- 49:46Speaker 1: So it's hard when you're making changes in your life.
- 49:49Speaker 1: And I went through this myself. When I first started
- 49:51Speaker 1: getting into health and fitness, I had people around me
- 49:54Speaker 1: and they were the wrong people and I ended up
- 49:57Speaker 1: removing them from my life, which was hard, but I
- 49:59Speaker 1: had to do it. When I was lifting weights, I
- 50:02Speaker 1: was starting to get muscle, and some of my friends
- 50:05Speaker 1: were saying, you're taking this too far and you're looking
- 50:07Speaker 1: manly and oh, it's disgusting. And I had a friend
- 50:10Speaker 1: of mine, he was supposed to be my best friend.
- 50:12Speaker 1: Look at my arms and I was doing boxing.
- 50:14Speaker 3: I was trying to get.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Her to get into fitness too, and she said, ooh,
- 50:18Speaker 1: look at your arms.
- 50:19Speaker 3: You look like a man.
- 50:20Speaker 1: And I thought, I feel the best I've ever felt
- 50:23Speaker 1: in my life. And I love this feeling. I love
- 50:25Speaker 1: what it's doing for my mind and my body. And
- 50:28Speaker 1: you're here telling me that I look manly, and I'm
- 50:31Speaker 1: taking it too far. So I realized she wasn't right
- 50:35Speaker 1: for me and the right sort of friend to have around.
- 50:37Speaker 1: But it is hard when you're making changes if you
- 50:40Speaker 1: feel like you're on your own and you don't have support,
- 50:42Speaker 1: especially if your family and friends aren't supportive. But in
- 50:46Speaker 1: my family, we are all there to support each other
- 50:49Speaker 1: and encourage each other. And a lot of the women
- 50:52Speaker 1: will get on and they will have problems and they
- 50:54Speaker 1: sort of talk it through with the other girls and
- 50:57Speaker 1: they just support each other.
- 50:58Speaker 3: It's the most amazing thing.
- 50:59Speaker 1: And they I feel like I'm alone in my sort
- 51:02Speaker 1: of real life, but I come on here and I
- 51:04Speaker 1: get the support and I feel like I can do it.
- 51:06Speaker 3: So It's just amazing to be able to offer that
- 51:08Speaker 3: for people.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love
- 51:21Speaker 2: to my sponsor at Blue Blocks. Over the past year,
- 51:24Speaker 2: I know many of you can relate. I have been
- 51:27Speaker 2: glued to my laptop, glued to my cell phone, which
- 51:30Speaker 2: means that I have been glued to these blue light
- 51:33Speaker 2: emitting devices and I started to experience uncomfortable headaches, eyestrain,
- 51:38Speaker 2: just a lot of discomfort period. So that is where
- 51:42Speaker 2: the Blue Blocks glasses come in. Blue light damages our
- 51:46Speaker 2: eyes and leads to digital eye strain, with symptoms including

- 54:01Speaker 2: for twenty five dollars off your first box at dailyharvest
- 54:04Speaker 2: dot com. That's daily harvest dot com. We've talked about
- 54:17Speaker 2: the evolution of your business and of course your mental
- 54:21Speaker 2: health journey, but what we haven't touched on yet is
- 54:25Speaker 2: the beautiful chapter of you becoming a mom. So talk
- 54:28Speaker 2: to me a little bit about getting pregnant with your
- 54:32Speaker 2: daughter and how that impacted you and your mental health
- 54:36Speaker 2: and your family.
- 54:38Speaker 1: I think it did so many wonderful things for me,
- 54:41Speaker 1: obviously on my journey. I've been getting stronger mentally over
- 54:45Speaker 1: the years, and I'm still getting stronger to this day.
- 54:48Speaker 1: But that was a real turning point for me as well,
- 54:51Speaker 1: because even though I'd come so far, I was still
- 54:55Speaker 1: sort of caught up in the perfection thing, and it's
- 54:57Speaker 1: something I always struggled with. I thought perfection existed, and
- 55:00Speaker 1: I always aimed for that. Obviously it doesn't, but I
- 55:03Speaker 1: still wanted to be that. So when I fell pregnant
- 55:07Speaker 1: and I gained twenty five kilos, I'm not sure how
- 55:09Speaker 1: much that is in pounds, but it's a fair bit.
- 55:11Speaker 2: That's fifty five pounds.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say a bit below sixty,
- 55:16Speaker 1: so a fair bit, especially because I was a small
- 55:18Speaker 1: frame and then having that much weight on. I guess
- 55:24Speaker 1: people assumed, and I sort of assumed because I was
- 55:27Speaker 1: in the fitness industry and I'd been fit for so long,
- 55:30Speaker 1: that I would not gain so much and I'd sort
- 55:33Speaker 1: of be one of those super fit pregnant women that
- 55:36Speaker 1: would have the baby and they're back in their skinny
- 55:39Speaker 1: jeans and.
- 55:40Speaker 3: The weights will gone and they're back to normal.
- 55:42Speaker 1: So I sort of thought that maybe that would be me,
- 55:45Speaker 1: and a lot of people, I guess thought the same thing.
- 55:49Speaker 1: And then because I did gain all the weight and
- 55:51Speaker 1: had my daughter, And don't get me wrong, I wasn't
- 55:55Speaker 1: ever feeling bad about my body or anything. I just
- 55:58Speaker 1: I loved being even though pregnancy, I was in a
- 56:01Speaker 1: lot of pain. I had back problems and psiatica and
- 56:03Speaker 1: all the things that come with it, all those wonderful things.
- 56:06Speaker 1: I still was so grateful for it because I wanted
- 56:08Speaker 1: a baby so badly, and I would overlook all that
- 56:11Speaker 1: other stuff. And I guess I probably thought i'd lose
- 56:14Speaker 1: the weight very quickly anyway, that it'd be fine, And
- 56:17Speaker 1: then so I.
- 56:17Speaker 3: Had had her, and the weight didn't drop off fast.
- 56:21Speaker 2: It was.
- 56:22Speaker 1: It was very hard to get rid of and I
- 56:24Speaker 1: had to work extremely hard, and especially when you've got
- 56:28Speaker 1: a new board. Anyone who's got babies knows what it's like.
- 56:31Speaker 1: I was training every day at midnight. By the time
- 56:35Speaker 1: she got to sleep, it was midnight, so I had
- 56:37Speaker 1: to just do it when I could, and I worked
- 56:40Speaker 1: so hard, and eventually I started losing the fact that
- 56:45Speaker 1: i'd gained.
- 56:45Speaker 3: But it wasn't just overnight.
- 56:47Speaker 1: It took time, and that was a lesson that I learned,
- 56:50Speaker 1: and I'm so glad I went through it and experienced it.
- 56:53Speaker 1: That it's harder for some people, and this is why
- 56:56Speaker 1: we can't compare. I'm huge on not comparing with other
- 56:59Speaker 1: people and making sure you're focusing on your own life
- 57:01Speaker 1: and your own journey and just being grateful for what
- 57:04Speaker 1: you've got and make your own achievable goals that you
- 57:08Speaker 1: know that you can that are attainable, and not getting
- 57:10Speaker 1: distracted by other people because it's the worst thing you
- 57:12Speaker 1: can do. And I sort of went through it too,
- 57:16Speaker 1: because social media is full of these perfect bodies, or
- 57:20Speaker 1: they appear to be perfect, and we know it doesn't exist,
- 57:22Speaker 1: but there they are in our faces. And I remember
- 57:26Speaker 1: seeing some other fitness professionals who had had a baby
- 57:30Speaker 1: around the same time as me, and they were back,
- 57:32Speaker 1: you know, with their six pack abs, And don't get
- 57:35Speaker 1: me wrong, I think it's amazing and good for them.
- 57:38Speaker 1: But the worst thing I could do was compare and
- 57:41Speaker 1: say why aren't I like that? Which I said to myself,
- 57:43Speaker 1: I thought, why am I not back like that? What's
- 57:46Speaker 1: wrong with me? People are going to think I'm not
- 57:48Speaker 1: really a fitness expert, like I should be back back
- 57:51Speaker 1: to that. Like I sort of put that pressure on myself,
- 57:53Speaker 1: But then I'd say to myself, no, am practice what
- 57:56Speaker 1: you preach, it's not about that.
- 57:57Speaker 3: Don't compare.
- 57:58Speaker 1: We're all in our own journ were all different, and
- 58:02Speaker 1: I'm I'm not gonna beat myself down because I don't
- 58:05Speaker 1: look like the way they are looking.
- 58:07Speaker 3: So that's when I just did my work.
- 58:10Speaker 1: I worked hard on getting my fitness back, and I
- 58:13Speaker 1: focused on how I felt over how my body was changing.
- 58:16Speaker 3: And it's not it doesn't come naturally to me.
- 58:18Speaker 1: I don't just go I don't care how I look,
- 58:20Speaker 1: and I just I just want to feel good. Of
- 58:22Speaker 1: course I want to look good too, but I just
- 58:24Speaker 1: kept focusing on how I was feeling, and even when
- 58:27Speaker 1: it came to how when I was losing the body fat,
- 58:30Speaker 1: I wouldn't worry about the scales and what I was weighing.
- 58:33Speaker 1: I just would look at how my clothes were fitting
- 58:36Speaker 1: and how you know, I was changing. My waist was changing,
- 58:39Speaker 1: it was getting smaller, and those sorts of things. But
- 58:41Speaker 1: I always went back to how I was feeling mentally
- 58:44Speaker 1: and making sure that I was healthy, and I didn't
- 58:46Speaker 1: do anything too extreme to get there. So I learnt
- 58:48Speaker 1: that in the first pregnancy, and then the second time around,
- 58:52Speaker 1: I could deal with it a lot better because I
- 58:54Speaker 1: knew what I was in for and I knew.
- 58:56Speaker 3: That i'd probably gain a lot, which I did.
- 58:58Speaker 1: I gained pretty much the same sort of wait, and
- 59:02Speaker 1: I'm on that journey now to get getting back to
- 59:05Speaker 1: being strong and super fit and healthy again. And I'm
- 59:08Speaker 1: eight months postpartum today actually, and yeah, it's taken. It's
- 59:12Speaker 1: been actually even harder this time, and I guess being
- 59:14Speaker 1: older hasn't helped.
- 59:16Speaker 3: But that's the thing, Like.
- 59:17Speaker 1: I think it's good and I'm actually grateful that I've
- 59:21Speaker 1: been able to go through this. Of course to have
- 59:23Speaker 1: my babies, because they're just miracles, but also to show
- 59:26Speaker 1: other women that it's sort of been an example to
- 59:29Speaker 1: them and show them that I can love my body
- 59:32Speaker 1: through everything, through putting on the extra way, through having
- 59:36Speaker 1: the wrinkly skin and the cellulate and stretch marks and
- 59:38Speaker 1: all that stuff that I still and I truly do.
- 59:41Speaker 1: I'm not just saying that I love my body. I've
- 59:43Speaker 1: never loved it more than I do now. I think
- 59:46Speaker 1: it's incredible for what it's done. And whether you've had
- 59:48Speaker 1: a baby or not, our bodies are amazing what they
- 59:51Speaker 1: do every single day for us that we don't even
- 59:53Speaker 1: think about. We are so lucky to have that, to
- 59:57Speaker 1: be here and have our health, and that's why health
- 59:59Speaker 1: is so we important.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: And yeah, here I am eight.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Months later, still training very hard, but I'm enjoying it.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: And it's not because anyone else expects me to or
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: I've put pressure on myself.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: It's because I want to be my best.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: I want to feel my best for me, for myself
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: and for my family, so I can be the best
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: mother possible and the best person, and the best friend,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: and just.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: The best that I can possibly be.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: What piece of advice would the Emily that's in this
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: headspace now offer that Emily that was back in her
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: late teens early twenties in the modeling industry.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I would say, learn as much as you can and
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: make sure you're taking something. Not everything's going to be positive,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: but try to see something positive out of every situation.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: And I truly believe even if it's a really terrible situation,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: and I've been through many of them, there is something
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: to learn from that and grow as a person.
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: But the biggest thing for me is to.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: Know your worth and you are worthy of being loved,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: and you're worthy of achieving things, of achieving whatever it
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: is you want to do. Because I always used to
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: think I wasn't good enough or I can't do that
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: because I'm not good enough. And my partner Declin helped
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: me a lot to believe in myself and to know
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: that I am capable and worthy of it. But the
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: biggest thing is your self worth and knowing that things
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: can get better and no matter no matter how bad
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: it gets at the time, there is a way out
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: and things will get better. So push through, push through,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: keep going, don't give up.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Right now. When someone comes to your Instagram page, they
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: see a woman that is a mother of two, well
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: versed in fitness. She's got a handful a couple of
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: million followers. When you look in the mirror, what is
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: it that you see looking back at you?
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I see an amazing woman who has achieved so much,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: especially mentally. I see a body that's carried my two
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: babies and kept grown them, kept them alive, breastfed. I've
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I'm extremely strong mentally and physically because the strength, like
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: we're talking about before, translates into other areas. But the
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: physical strength of my fitness for me, translates into my
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: mental health. And I feel like I'm so strong and capable.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I feel like I'm super woman, and I'm appreciative. And
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I'm not even just saying this because I think it's
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: what I should say. I'm saying it because this is
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: how I truly feel. And there was a moment after
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: I had my son. I actually had my son on
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: the landroom floor at home because I didn't make it
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: to the hospital. It happened so fast, and this was
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: something that also made me feel like I'm so strong
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: and amazing because my body and so many women do this,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: I know, but I actually had this feeling myself.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: My body did it.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: My body burn him on its egn and I didn't
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: have to do anything, and he's healthy, and everything sort
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: of went how it should go, I guess, or how
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: you would hope it would go. And I didn't have
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: any sort of medical support to write. At the end,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: he was already half out and I had the ambulance
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: officers come and then I got taken to the hospital
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: in the ambulance. But I did it all and I
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: felt like, wow, I am capable. I had this really strong,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: powered sort of feeling. And then when I got to
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: the hospital and I had my first shower, so you
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: go in and wash off because it gets pretty messy childbirth.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: I went into the bathroom and I looked in the
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: mirror and I had this smile on my face, because
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: after you've had a baby, you still have the big
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: tummy and you've got extra skin.
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: It's all sort of hanging and it's very different.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: And I could see how women would be very they
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: could get upset by it.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: But I felt the opposite.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: And I thought, because I went through all those years
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: of hating myself and hating my body and always criticizing
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: it and I'm not enough or to this, or I'm
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: too skinny, or I'm I don't have enough of this,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: there's always something that's not that wasn't enough.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: It was always I was lacking.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: It's as scarcity sort of mentality, I don't have enough
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: of something, or I'm you know, just not right. But
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: I had that feeling of wow, look what my body
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: has done.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: Isn't it incredible?
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: And I had this overwhelming love and appreciation for it.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: And I put my hands on my tummy and I
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: and I said thank you. I actually said those words
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: out loud, thank you so much. Look what you've done.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: You've birthed my baby boy and he's healthy and we're
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: both fine. And I felt so powerful, like I was
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: actually wonder woman or superwoman or something like that like
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: a superhero. And then I said to myself, don't ever
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: hate yourself again, Like, don't ever have that hate for
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: your body ever again. And if you do, you got
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: to remember this moment. And I haven't yet had to
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: remind myself because I just I am so grateful for
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: what my body does. And this is what I'm all
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: about to I tell women that focus on what your
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: body does for you, not how it looks.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: And again, it's it's all good to want to look good.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: That's okay, but don't sacrifice your health to get there,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: and don't beat yourself up. And we're not trying to
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: get perfection here. We just want to feel the best
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: we can. But we have to remember that we are
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: amazing and our bodies do so much for us, and
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: have gratitude for it.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: What excites you right now?
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: This is going to sound so weird and stupid, but
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: going to the gym that stupid, Isn't it strange? But
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: people think, oh, you know, you don't you don't wake
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: up and you want to get to the gym to
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: be excited.
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: No one, no one feels like that.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: But I actually do feel like that now because I'm
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: at that point I've pushed through the start where it's
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: horrible and you don't want to do it and you
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: feel unmotivated.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: I've pushed through all that.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Now and I've started feeling really strong and capable, and
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: I feel like I've pushed my fitness further than I
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: ever have because my mental strength now is so strong,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: and like we'll say before, it translates into other areas
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: of our lives, and I feel just amazing, on top
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: of the world. And this is what I felt when
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: I first started health and fitness. I felt like I
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: was on top of the world, and I wanted other
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: people to feel that way. So that excites me, that
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: feeling of I'm pushing myself further, obviously listening to my
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: body too and not going too far, but we can
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: do so much more than we think we can. And
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: then I get excited because I've achieved this, and then
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: I know that other people can achieve it too, and
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I know that all the women doing my programs. I've
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: just launched another one the other day, body sculpt and
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: I'm seeing people posting about that and they're excited and
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: they're doing workouts and they're saying it's really hard and
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: laying who's sitting next to me here is doing body
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: sculpt and she's saying, I hate you and this is
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: it's so hard today, And I say, yeah, well it's
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: going to get better as you get stronger, it's going
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: to feel easier and you're you're going to love it.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: But the start's really really hard. But that's what excites me,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: and that's when I started. That's what made me want
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: to do what I'm doing now and start my programs.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: Still get that feeling now, I still get excited about it,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: So that's probably something that I'm most excited about. But
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: of course there's many things coming in the future that
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: I don't even know a lot of them yet, but
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: a lot of things are coming to the app this
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: year and James Cosmetics, my other business, which is a
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: beauty business. There's so much happening that I think the
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: main thing for me is that it has a positive
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: impact on women.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: Even the beauty business.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: We're all about spending a few minutes per week just
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: on yourself. It's really important that you put that time
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: aside and you do something for you that is showing
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: yourself love. So whatever you need to do, whatever makes
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: you feel good, You've got to make that time. Otherwise
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: we just get so caught up in life because we're
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: so busy. But if you just spend even ten minutes
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: a couple of times a week on doing something, whether
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: it's you can even do a quick workout for ten
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: minutes at home, or or you can do a facial
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: or something that's taking that time out that you're investing
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: into yourself will make you feel so much better. And
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: that's what I'm all about, and that's what my businesses
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: are about.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: For sure, And I think that's something could be really helpful.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: You're talking about feeling so excited to work out, But
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: for the person that's not there yet, for the person
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: that really is closer to the start of their journey,
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: the person that's struggling to find that motivation to either
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: do something un demanded in their living room or go
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: to the gym or go for a run, what piece
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: of advice do you offer to them at the beginning.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a good point and I need people
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: to realize, which if you follow me, you'll see that
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I've posted this a lot, and I've posted it.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: From the start and me really struggling.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: But the biggest thing is the motivation people think, or
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: they say to me, I wish I had your motivation,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: or I need to find motivation. You don't find it,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: you create it, and it sucks at the beginning. It
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: really does, and it does for me too, and I'm
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: not exempt from that. I still went through the tough
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: times of not feeling motivated, especially after having a baby,
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: and you're tied and real I have a todd live
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: a three year old and a eight month old now,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: but earlier on he was really difficult because he's got
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: severe reflux, so's he cries a lot.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: He's vomiting multiple times a day, and it was really hard.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: But I knew that if I started exercising, because I'd
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: been healthy and fit before, I know how good it feels.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: So I sort of have that to remind me and
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: give me that motivation, I guess.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: But I just.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Focused on I'm going to feel so much better for this,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: and I'll be able to handle so much more in
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: my life. So I wanted to sit on the couch
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: all day every day and watch TV and watch Netflix
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: and have my baby and cuddle my baby and just
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: not do anything. And I thought, I've got to go.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: I've got to start exercising. I just have to start moving.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: And then I thought, well, what do I tell other people?
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Let's do that? Maybe I should practice what I preach.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: So I just.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Started one foot in front of the other and started walking.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: So don't over commit. Don't think, oh, I've got to
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: train an hour and a half every day, six days
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: a week too much. You've got to make it achievable.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: So start small, create these smaller goals. Don't have a
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: huge goal like I want to be ten percent body fat,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: and I want to I want that in six months.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: Like you've got to be realistic here and not look
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: at anyone else on what they're doing. Like I was
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: talking about before, you're not comparing. You're making your own
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: goals and you're focusing on your own journey there and
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: make those smaller achievable goals. So I went for walks
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: at the start. Then i'd do a little bit of
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: a slow jog, and I started lifting weights. But I
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: obviously dropped the weights that I was lifting. It wasn't
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: anywhere near as heavy as it used to be. And
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: I had to not compare to how I used to
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: train because before I fell pregnant.
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: The second time, I was at my peak.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: I was fitter and stronger than I'd ever ever been
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: in my life, and I had moments where I thought, oh,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: this is horrible.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: I can't even do one knee push up anymore.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: And I used to do full ones and do thirty
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: of them in a row, and I'm never going to
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: get back there. And I had to get rid of
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: those feelings and go, Okay, I'm starting from scratch here.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: I'm starting at the body, and it's all about progress
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: and I need to remember that.
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: So I just do what I could and get uncomfortable.
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: That's a huge one.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: You have to get uncomfortable to make changes, get out
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: of your comfort zone, make it challenging. And then each
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: time you exercise, obviously listening to your body, and if
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: you really need a break, you've got to take one
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: and get enough sleep as well, and make sure nutrition's good.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: There's a lot of parts to this, but you slowly
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: work your way up, and that's the point. It takes time,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: but the start is the hardest.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: It truly is.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: I did not start feeling motivated and jumping out of
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: bread bed excited to go to the gym, and because
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: I started training at home as well, so I was
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: doing a lot of stuff at home and walking around
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: my neighborhood. Now I've just started going to the gym,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: probably about two months ago, because our gym's all opened up.
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: Luckily. We're very grateful for that here.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: But yeah, it's about progress and just move and stop
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: thinking about it. I go into robot mode. So that's
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: what I like to call it. You don't think about
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: it because you'll talk yourself out of it.
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: Just just do it.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: Put your gym clothes near your bed, get up, put
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: them on, have you banana or whatever you have in
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: the morning, and big drink of water, and just start
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: moving and adding to it over time. But don't expect
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: results too soon, because it's consistency that will get you there.
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: And I've done the same thing. I'm not perfect.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: I still at the start thought why aren't I dropping? Like,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: why aren't I losing the fats? This is going to
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: be really hard what I'm going to do. I'm supposed
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: to be Emily sky Fit on Instagram.
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: What am I going to do? I'm not fit?
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: And I had those feelings, but I just I push
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: it away and kept pushing forward and kept being consistent
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: and kept going. You can do this, and you're stronger
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: than you think you are. And I tell myself all
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: those things, and now I'm feeling amazing, And like I
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: said before, I do jump out of bed looking forward
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: to my training session because I'm starting well. I started
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: to probably about two months ago. Now I started to
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: feel the results. I started feeling stronger and fitter, and
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: I started losing fat and getting light and it pays off.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: But it's like I always say, persistence pays off. You
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: have to be persistent with it and then you'll get there.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: And I feel incredible now and I don't want to stop,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: and you'll get the same too. Like if for you
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: guys out there that want to embark on this fitness journey,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: you've got to realize that this has got to be
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: a lifestyle change. It's not short term. So start making
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: changes that you know you can keep doing, and you
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: can you can maintain and believe that you can do
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: it as long as you can just get past the start,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: keep pushing through.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: I love and get the Emily Sky feed up.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: I love all of that advice, and I think what's
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: really beautiful in there is that you articulated that yes,
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: there may be one time that you think like this
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: is going to be the only time in the beginner.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: But this is a journey and there are going to
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: be different chapters in it, and there are going to
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: be different points where, whether it's because of something that's
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: going on physically or mentally, that you feel as though
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: that you are back at square one. But the reality
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: is is that once that you know what you feel
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: like to be a beginner, that means that you also
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: know what it feels like to get to that next
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: step and that next step and that next step. So
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: understanding that with time it gets easier, and that there
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: are going to be a lot of other people in
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: the world who understand exactly what you're going through, and
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: that you are never alone in that final question for you, Emily, you.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: Ready, Yes, I'm scared right now, And.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: I know you touched a little bit on this before,
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: but I'm going to give you an opportunity to expand
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: upon it again. You have an opportunity to offer yourself
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: a piece of advice going through that hurdle moment when
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: you are thinking about and attempting to take your own life.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: You have an opportunity to give yourself a piece of
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: advice looking back on that hurdle moment right now, what
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: do you tell yourself?
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: It would be that you are worth so much more
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: than you think you are. You're meant to be here,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: and you're here for a reason, and there's something amazing
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: that you're going to do in the future, and you're
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: going to be able to help other people through it,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: especially through this experience, because this is the worst that
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: you can feel. You're at the absolute worst point of
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: your life and it's horrible, and I know it is,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: and it's painful, but there's always a way out, and
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: the only way now is up, because you can't get
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: any lower. But you have to save yourself and you
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: have to believe that you're worthy of saving and searching
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: for love from everyone else is not the way. You've
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: got to learn to love yourself. And this is such
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: a difficult thing to do, and I totally get it.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: It's really hard to love yourself, but I truly do now.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: But I think the first step is just knowing that
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: you are worth living, You're worth living for and you're
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: so blessed to be able to be here. I mean,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: even just conception is miraculous, isn't it. Keep pushing through
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: and keep going back to I'm worthy and I'm lovable
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: and you will get there, and you've got to believe
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: in yourself.
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: But yeah, there's a way out. That's something I would
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: tell myself.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: There's always a way out, and don't feel ashamed to
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: seek help. And it's take one step at a time.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: When you make changes. It's not an overnight thing. Even
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: when you realize I'm going to do this now, it's
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: consistent effort.
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: Every single day you have to put in.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: You can't just go, Okay, I'm going to make changes
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: now and work on myself and then you think you're
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: going to be automatically changed. Every single day you have
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: to wake up and go, no, I've chosen to make
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: changes and to live this day differently to what I
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: have in the past because that hasn't served me. It
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: hasn't made me happy. So you can do it. You
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: can do it, you can get through it.
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: I think all of your takeaways are just so beautiful,
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: and I just I want to reiterate from my end
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: that I'm appreciative of your time, and what I'm really appreciative,
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: to be honest, is that it's very clear in the
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: way that you speak about your journey and in the
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: way that you speak with me that you're very present
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: here in this moment, and I think that is It's
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: awesome because with so much going on and being a
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: mother of two and owning this business and showing up
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: for your community, I know that it can be a
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: little challenging at times to just fully show up somewhere,
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: especially for an hour and change. So thank you so much.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: It means the world to me, and I know that
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: it's going to mean the world to the Hurdlers as
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: they listen to this episode.
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: Thank you so much for having me, Emily. And you
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: know what, I actually really love talking about all this stuff.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: I am very passionate about it and if it can
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: help someone, even just one person, then it's worth it.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: But even for me to reflect on how far I've gone,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: it's really important to stop, I think, in your life
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: because it is so busy, insane, but stop and realize, hey,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: I have come so far. Because a lot of us think, oh,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I've got so far to go, but look how far
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: we've come. I think it's the only the only time
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: we should really look back is to see how far
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: we've come. And it's true, definitely should be proud of ourselves.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: Every small step we take, we should be proud of ourselves.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Emily, how do the hurdlers keep up with you? Give
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: me all of your details?
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: So Instagram is Emily sky Fit, make sure you've got
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: the E on the sky and Facebook is Emily sky
