- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I have a confession.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: They say that it's good for the soul.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: As soon as I started that, I think I've started a recent podcast this season.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: We've done that this way before.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: Well, Deja vu.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, deja vu.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: So there have been more than one occasion where I will be on the couch, I'm looking at my computer, I'm looking at my phone.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And the first words I will hear is, you didn't hear anything I just said, did you?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Guilty.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And that's the moment I'm like, oh no.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Well, yes, I've heard you, darling.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Well, and my and my wife has been talking, and I have just I uh men's brains are like waffles, ladies are like spaghetti, as it had been said.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Like I have been in this zone, and I've uncannily, some people don't understand, I've been to block everything out, and all of a sudden they're like, Yes, oh, you were talking.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And I was not.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: I was not, yes, I'm I was not in the same room with you.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Been there, done that probably yesterday.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So it's just what's interesting though is here's why I bring that up.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: The voices that are the most familiar to us, yeah, sometimes, unintentionally, we can tune them out.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: That is very true.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I can confess that has been true all my life.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: So it's not it's not just me.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: No, my I think mom has said that about to me and probably to you, even as children.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: She never said that to me.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Are you listening to me?
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: What?
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: No, yes, I heard you, mom.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Well, we're yeah, we're gonna circle back to that idea about like voices, voices that we hear, voices that we listen to, yeah, voice that we choose to hear or choose to listen to.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: We're gonna talk about that a little bit today on this episode of the High Dive Podcast.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Hey, I'm Ricky.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: This is Alan, and uh, you tuned into the High Dive Podcast.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: This is a ministry of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: We are glad that you are here.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, each week in this podcast, we try to just spend some time maybe digging in a little bit deeper.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: This past Sunday, Jonathan Norton, our head of school, did a beautiful job preaching uh in our continuation of Genesis chapter three, kind of drilling into verses eight through 14.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna spend some time talking about that today.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Sounds good.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be great.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Um, so there's a lot of interesting things that happen.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, when we look just generally through these verses, like we're seeing um, we're seeing the beauty of God walking with Adam and Eve in the garden.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's beautiful.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So there's this picture of a relationship and community.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: We're seeing the first glimpse of their shame.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, we're seeing some we're seeing some blame happening.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is that woman that you know, yeah.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot of directions we can go with this, but um, I want to first start in in Genesis 3.8.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: If you don't mind, I'm gonna read it.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, and I would love for you maybe just to talk us through uh what maybe the more figurative, well, not even figurative, the more kind of literal translation of these words.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Is that fair?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: All right, so I read from the ESV.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, uh, not because I think it's the only one as my preference.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Early back in the archives, we got we did a podcast early on in the about Bible translation.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: All right, so ESV, Genesis 3, verse 8, says, and they heard the sound of the Lord walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord among the trees of the garden.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Is there another way?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: And like when we consider the literal rendering of the Hebrew, how would that sound a little bit different?
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: So um I asked, I I went and looked through.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: I'm not a Hebrew expert.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Understood.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: So I try, I'm using into resources.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And so if we go word for word and just try to literally translate that into English words, that reads something like this.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: They heard the sound of Yahweh God moving about in the garden at the wind of the day, which is weird, interesting.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: And the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: So I I as I I we've read this a lot, right?
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: I've read through this a lot.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: And as as we were reading through this preparing for our conversation today, I had one of those like, wait a minute, moments, right?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: And I I like I had a few.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: What were yours?
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Well, part of what we've been talking about a lot on here has just been the importance of meditating on the text.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: And I for the first time, I may I may have had this thought before, but this first time it just resonated with me.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: How do you to we're told they heard the sound of Yahweh?
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I don't the sound of Yahweh is a weird way to say that you're not.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what's he sound like, right?
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: What is that?
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: The sound of Yahweh walking, the sound of Yahweh walking in the garden.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: That just seemed like a weird way to say that.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: That struck out to me.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: And then in the cool of the day, when we were looking at this, it's the word for wind.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Which I went, wait, the wind of the day, because it's we've translated it cool of the day, but it's wind, which is that it's the word raw.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's not raw, it's the ruach.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: It's the ruach.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not raw.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: No, not ra, rah, rah, it's the roof of a ruach.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: And I just began to sort of tinker through.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: These are some interesting ways to say what's being said here.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Yes, it is.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: That's not the way I would have that's not the way I would have said it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: If I were just trying to say, hey, they heard God walking up.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: But they heard the sound of God walking.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Like, what is this?
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: How does the sound of God walk?
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: So I kind of want to play into that a little bit this morning or this afternoon, whenever you're watching this, uh, it releases in the morning.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: I kind of want to play off of that for some intriguing meditation.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Because in in some ways it reinforces my perception I've always had in terms of this invitation of relationship and walking with them.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: In other ways, it disrupts the way I've pictured it.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: So my probably first image in my brain of this scene is truthfully coming from a flannel graph in Sunday school, probably when I was four, five, and six years old.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And I'm seeing Adam and Eve kind of covering in shame in this garden.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: There's this apple hanging, the little serpent still kind of suspended.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, but as I've developed it kind of imaginatively, yeah, I've kind of, you know, it's uh the sun's not up all the way.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: There's kind of the the dew on the ground, almost a little haze through the garden.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: It's kind of the because it's the cool of like the morning of the day or the or the end of the day, because the sun's not all the way up.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: That's kind of the way I've envisioned it.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And and that very well may be true.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: But I do think, especially in meditative poetic literature like this, there are words that are trying to communicate some things.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And so uh I you just read kind of the more literal translation about the trees come back in.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: We get trees again, right?
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Like that's a theme in the whole last two chapters, correct.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: So we've heard that before.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so that that in and of itself kind of alters my imagination to say one of two things.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Um, was it just generally the trees because it was a forest?
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Or were they hiding behind one of the two trees in the center of the garden?
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe, and and if so, which one?
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Were they hiding?
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Think of this visually from a meditative standpoint.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Were they potentially hiding behind the thing that they had just been the source of their sin?
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Or were they somehow uh had some mindset that the tree of life was the thing?
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, I gotta go run to that thing now because I did.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, but where I where I think there could be some more weight to lean into.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: I want to look at some of these in that verse specifically, a couple of Hebrews express expressions.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: The first one is the word qual.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: It can be translated as voice or sound, and we see those two words used in most English translations of chapter three, verse eight.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: It could also be translated as thunder, correct?
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Just some kind of clapping, some kind of some kind of sound, right?
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Which, depending on the intentionality context, could change the tone.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't know how conversations go.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: If so I could say something one way.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Tone matters.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Tone absolutely matters.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Tone matters.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: So um I'm a tonal person, by the way.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Because, for example, here's what I mean by tone.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: If you fast forward, there's an interesting hyperlink from Genesis 3.8 in this word to Exodus 19, okay, verses 16 through 19.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Qual is used there, but it's it's it's referring at Mount Sinai.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: It's the same word, and it and in that it's associated with this like overwhelming revelation of God's presence, so much so that the people kind of dropped it.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Tower back away from it in fear and are like, Tell God to stop talking to us.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Because the initial invitation was all of them to come, like, no, no, no, no, no, no, we got to get back.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: It's scary.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Moses, why don't you go, yeah, and listen?
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: So God stopped talking to us.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: That's that is a potential tone thing.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: And I think it it just here's the fascinating question.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Were Adam and Eve hearing this uh sound voice that was a familiar presence of, oh, he's just hey Adam, where are you guys?
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I want to meet with you.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, this calming, soothing, or was it like more of a terrifying manifestation of the holiness of God?
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Like, Adam, where are you?
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, yeah, what's he saying?
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: I so I the text is ambiguous, right?
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: It does not explicitly describe it either way.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Um, but the text gives us enough information that we can infer, it's all it's in this is an inference.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: We're just made it.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: We can infer that this was probably not the first time that at the cool of the day the the sound of the Lord was walking in the garden.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: It gave yes, it gives you this uh it's almost as if the author is assuming like this was their routine.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: This, yes, right.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: So the the assumption from the text is that this was not the first time and it was not out of the norm.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: What was out of the norm is what had just happened, causing their them to be different.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: So God is continuing to come and do what God has demonstrated that he is going to come to do.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Um, but they're now different.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: So chapter two verses, chapter three, verse eight, there's something different about Adam and Eve.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: And we see it in their physical expression by taking fig leaves, sewing them together, and hiding amongst the trees, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: So there's some difference.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: So what I was here's what I was thinking.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: What I and I it feels like it seems to be a pattern that would be consistent with what we see through.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: So if I imagine the day before when God showed up, and they hear, and I don't, I don't know what the sound of the Lord of God, the Lord God walking is.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: That's part of the question.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: What interesting, or was it this inviting?
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Let's let's just for the sake of argument say that it was God simply saying, Adam, right, that's what it was.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Adam.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Yesterday, that was an appeal, that was an inviting statement.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: It was a a call to participate.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: It was a, hey guys, let's go.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: And then on this day, because of what they've done, if if God has not changed, and God shows up on the scene and he simply yells, Adam, right, how Adam, how Adam and Eve hear that is has changed.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: That's correct.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Which I think, oh go ahead, but I was gonna say, so like like in verse eight, they heard the sound of the Lord.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: That word heard is is a uh it's where we get the word Shema, like it's a Shema word.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Hero, here's the Lord, oh God, Lord is one.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Deuteronomy six, uh, you know, the great Shema, and it's a listen word.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: So it it uh listen, listen, listen, listen, right?
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: So Hebrew doesn't have a an obey word, it has a listen, listen word.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Like so what it it seems to be suggesting is that when God showed up on the scene today, the way he has been showing up on the scene today, and they heard him, their response to that has changed has changed.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: God hasn't changed.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: How God showed up hasn't changed.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: God is the same yesterday, day, and forever, but God's presence has all of a sudden caused them to be different.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, which I think it's an interesting meditation.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: That uh so they heard what you just said is a pro, I want to reiterate, that's a profound nugget to hold on to throughout scripture, especially in the Old Testament.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: In our modern English language, we differentiate between listening and obeying.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Those are two things in English.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Hearing, listen, listen.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Hearing in Hebrew, it is you're listening, and the assumption is that you are obeying.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Like it is you're doing the thing that you've heard.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: That's correct.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: They're intricately connected.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: If you aren't doing the thing that you've heard, you didn't listen.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: You didn't hear.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: You didn't hear, right?
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: You didn't hear, hear.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: Listen, listen.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: You didn't hear me, otherwise, you would have done it.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: That's correct.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: So they hear this sound.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: Which is what dad used to always tell me.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: I don't think you heard me, boy.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, anyway.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: They hear the sound of God walking, moving about.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: So uh an interesting, an interesting reflection of an ancient rabbi was um connecting the sound of God's presence with an emphasis of this extraordinary manner of divine revelation.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Here's why I think this matters.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: The differentiation between the two parties here.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: God is the one moving toward them.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Adam and Eve are hiding behind the trees.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Which trees we don't know.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: We've already just speculated.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: God is the one moving toward them, which demonstrates his faithfulness to us.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Like he pursues us, he pursued them, he pursues us.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: We even highlighted last week, and there are more to come on this later in future weeks in Genesis 3, but moving forward, when they are kicked out of the garden, God goes with them.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: So, like just the faithfulness of the Lord to pursue us by walking, to extend an invitation to us by calling out whether it was a calming Adam or Adam, the tone irrelevant, correct.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: He's calling and he's pursuing.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: I think the consistency then is in that wind of the day, because like we have heard ruach before all early in Genesis 1.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the spirit of God.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: And so I think I think some scholars have interpreted that language, ruach hayom, the wind of the day, the spirit of the day.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Uh some suggest that is a more um dramatic, like God is entering a little bit different than the norm.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: He's not necessarily that he's coming in hot, right, but he's coming in with intention.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Which even if so, is consistent.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: Even if he's coming in, it would be like um if mom were to say Alan, but if she says David Alan Smith, big difference.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: Big difference, right?
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: One the in there's some intention, both are set out of love, but one is with a greater level of intensity and intention.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: So there are some, we're just meditating and just thinking out loud.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: There are some that suggest that ruach tone.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Um because when we see it first introduced the Spirit of God hovering over the water, he was he was the thing that was pulling things.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: There was intention in his presence.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I think that well the presence of the Lord here is causing Adam and Eve to have a to perceive all of this very differently.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Um and I I the as you've taught, the thing that has stuck in my brain has been those few moments in my childhood um when mom has given me the thing, wait till your dad gets home.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: And then I hear dad come home and the keys hit the counter and he goes, Hey guys.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Now he can't, he just comes home and says, Hey guys, hey, hey, what's going on?
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: But in my heart, I like, oh no.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Like I have like this sinking feeling.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: This would be four cell phones.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: He didn't know what was going on.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, he didn't, yeah, right.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: He'd been at work on it.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: He didn't know what's going on.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Mom hadn't had told him yet, right?
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: But for me, I knew that this was not a pleasant moment or about to be a pleasant moment.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: And so as I'm to me, when I imagine this, I hear, again, the sound of the Lord walking seems is still a perplexing way to say that.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Um in the wind of the day.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: In the wind of the day, right?
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: That's those are to me, those are weird ways to put something, a phrase.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: But the thing that sticks out to me is that Adam and Eve, verse 7, their eyes were opened and they knew they were naked, and they felt shame.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: And they immediately tried to fix it.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: But when they hear God show up in Eden that day, there is a feeling of something's not right in their heart and mind.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: And God is simply calling them to participate with this walk with him.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Because the reality is like God's presence, even if his tone has changed, his action and his presence have not changed.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: You said this a different way earlier.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: It's humans, the relationship of humanity to God's presence is the thing that has changed.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And I there's some okay, more interesting hyperlinks.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: I already referred to Exodus 19.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Um, Isaiah 6, Revelation 6, specifically, verses 15 through 17.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Um all those together help demonstrate that like the presence of a holy God, it's a delight to the righteous.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: It is terrifying to those who uh have a guilty conscience.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: Well, uh the presence of the being in the presence of a holy God, even if you are like I'm thinking of uh Isaiah, right?
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: He's in this, he has this vision at the beginning of Isaiah, and he's in the throne room of God, and all of a sudden he begins to freak out.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, why I'm not supposed to be here.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Um But then the the angels touch his lip with the Glowing ember from the altar, and all of a sudden his entire perception and reality of what's happening changes, right?
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Um, and so I I think that there is a I think this is where we see it start, and the kernels of this begin to propagate throughout the Old Testament.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: There is a sentiment of us humanity, humans, because we have sin nature.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Whenever we encounter the holy God, there is awe and fear and all kinds of like, whoa, I'm not supposed to be here happening.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: We see that, we see that with Abraham, we see that with Moses, we see that throughout throughout the prophets, right?
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: I'm not supposed to be here.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I I am about to die, right?
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Until God extends his grace and mercy.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: And he's like, no, no, no.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: And and there is something that happens um when we encounter the righteous creator of the universe, that we do what Adam and Eve did.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: We go hide ourselves in the best way we possibly can out of fear of this sound that we're hearing.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: And I think then the work of Jesus has transformed that reality.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Of course he has.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Well, and I think where it's a matter of we could call a personal conviction or challenge of the Christian life or whatever, uh, and a in a thought circling back to kind of the the hook idea of oh no, I I wasn't listening.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: And what are you listening to?
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Interesting, in in in chapter three, uh-huh, uh in verse seven, eight, and seventeen, qua is repeated.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: And so let's just pick one consistent translation and let's say it's the voice.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Um, so verse seven, uh-huh, uh, or is it eight?
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Excuse me, eight yes.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Eight, ten, and seventeen.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: So in verse eight, uh, the voice of God calls out.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Verse 10, Adam says, I heard your voice.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Verse 17, what's verse 17 say?
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Verse 17 says, and Adam, and to Adam, he said, because you listened to the qual of your wife.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: So it's the same Hebrew word, yeah, three different times.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And I think, I think the perhaps the point that we're to meditate on is it's drawing this repetition and attention to what Adam hears ultimately to what voice he obeys.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: I I as the voice that you obey, that is the that is the underlying test, tension, reality of the tree in the Garden of Eden.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Like, because in chapter two, when he when he says when he says, all the trees you can eat, but of this tree, speaking of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, don't eat of this tree.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Or the day you eat of it, that's God is not just simply giving a command.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: God is basically giving Adam this opportunity, okay, you can trust me and my words, right, or you can trust your own wisdom.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: That's ultimately what this tree is asking.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: And what seems to be happening here in these verses is that in the previous verses, Adam listens to the deceiver and then listens to Eve, and then decides that he's going to listen to that word and not God's word.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: And the consequence of that is that God reminds him, Wait, you you responded because you listened to the wrong voice.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Not that your wife is wrong, but you had the option to choose life or death, and you chose death.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: You chose wisdom, you chose non-wisdom over, you know, you sure.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: So that that listening to that.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Here's what we know because it's so hard to kind of just let ourselves sit in this.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: We want to jump ahead because we know what happens next.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Because we know, even moving forward in the Old Testament, the beauty of okay, the Lord disciplines those that he loves.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: And we know that there are consequences that are going to come from the curse and being expelled from the garden.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: And we know that gracious God is going to make a covering for them.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: And so we're going to hit those things later.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: But just sitting in this, not letting ourselves get ahead, I think there's still a beautiful glimpse into uh the grace and mercy of a God who pursues us.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: We saw that of the He was then He was the one approaching.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Here's the other thought I want to kind of meditate on.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Let's go back to the purely hypothetical scenario of your imagination as a child when you know you're in trouble and dad comes home and says, Hey, yeah, okay.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: And you assume in that moment, because of his tone, he doesn't know.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: What if mom had already called him at work and said, Hey, listen, when you get home, these boys, yeah, I've already told them these were the seven words I hated to hear the most.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Wait till your dad gets home.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: Just wait till your dad gets home.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: I get the he be jeebies of it now.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: So he still tells us, I mean, he's 70 something years old.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: He says, You'll never be told for me to whip.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: And I believe him.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: I do too.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: So um, so let's just Okay, let's imagine that he did already know.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and he still walked in the door that day and said, Hey guys, yeah, with this tone to say, like, I'm gonna invite you, I'm gonna give you an opportunity here to just own what's going on.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, I already know, yeah, but I'm gonna give you a chance.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: So uh here, here's why this matters.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: When we move from verse eight to verse nine, God asks Adam a question.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Hey Adam, where are you?
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: Now, what do you think's ironic about that question?
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: Uh he's omniscient, omnipotent.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: He knows.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: He's not asking this is not a question of lack of knowledge.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: And and I don't think it's rhetorical.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: I think it's intentional.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: I think I think this God already knew their location.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Yep, he knew what trees they were hiding behind.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Uh, and the question was a demonstration of God's grace, like a gracious way of beginning a conversation so that Adam potentially would not be overwhelmed by this sudden accusation.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: That is a that's a reflection of it's it's certainly a meditation that ancient rabbis have reflected on.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I think it just gives us gives us an opportunity to pause and question or meditate on the significance of that.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: So in my sort of cursory reading of stuff, one of the things that I stumbled across on this question of where are you from the the Hebrew the Hebrew word there is aika.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, yes.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Um but the probably like um, which means where are you?
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: And the Hebrew word aika means how.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: Like and and it's the same um, it's the same word used in the opening of the book of Lamentations.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: How is this?
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh one of the rabbinical sort of meditations that I had discovered on this was the the Hebrew words between where are you and how are so close, strikingly similar, right?
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: The same basic consonants in there, just different Bibles that give the different sound, that it well the idea is that God is not going, where are you, as much as it's a how did this happen?
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: question.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but yeah, I like that because it's um and a lamentation over what has happened as a result of it.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Well, when you think about it, um I can I can reflect on personal leadership and parenting failures, where my first response would be something like, Why did you just do that?
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Right, or right, what were you thinking?
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: And and God doesn't respond that way, correct?
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Right, he was just like, Hey, where are you?
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Right, yeah, like what just happened, right?
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: And so I think the beauty of it when we see the progression of God's activity and what God says from verse 8 and verse 9, like God seeks, God calls, God questions before he ever announces any judgment.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: He gives Adam an opportunity to respond.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Now, we will see later.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Adam's response does not accept responsibility.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: He's a typical male, he's passive.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, it was her fault.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: It wasn't my fault.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: And she says, Well, it was his fault.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: You know, she points to the serpent, right?
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: Pass the butt, pass the butt, pass the butt.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: But there's plenty of examples of where we do those things, those failures, but I just uh so often as we as we move from this ancient world into modern day thought, yeah.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: Man, so often I think people have a perception that God is in heaven like with a quiver of lightning bolts, just raining down judgment, right?
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, and it just doesn't work that way.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: That's not who he is.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Like, judgment already is.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: I'm actually inviting you to escape that judgment.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Like, I am, it's the opposite that's happening.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to restore you out of this thing that's broken rather than we we want to accuse God for the brokenness when the brokenness is our fault.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: It's our problem.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: Uh there's a a parenting sort of principle.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Um, you don't ask questions that you don't already know the answer to.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: True.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: So there's a part of me that that the questions that God is asking are not questions that He's asking to find information out.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: He already knows the answer to these questions.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and there's a part of me that wonders, uh, I just you don't know.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: I it just it's a question of curiosity because about uh because of the character and nature of God.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: There's a part of me that wonders if if at verse nine, when God calls to Adam and says, Where are you?
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: And Adam says, Lord, I have sinned against you.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: There's a part of me that wonders, what would have God's response been to that?
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: As opposed to, well, it was the woman you like instead of this sort of shedding responsibility.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: There's a part of me that wonders, what would God's response have been to Adam had Adam identified and recognized what had happened and immediately repented of what had happened?
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Like, would there, I don't know, it's conjecture.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: Knowing God's character, nature, restoration would have been effort to put forward.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: But um I've wondered what that response of God would have been like had Adam responded differently than it wasn't my fault.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: It's a very good question.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: And I I I can't help but reflect and internalize those things on um we live in a world where there's so much noise.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and we can I have used the excuse, so I'm not the only one.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Well, God, if you just made it clear I would do it.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Maybe he actually has made it clear.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: I'm the one who's over, I'm the I'm the one who's creating all this noise.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: Like how how careful am I to sit in the quiet, open his word, let him speak.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Um, I invite so much noise, but then even when he does speak, how quickly we deflect, or how quickly we blame, or how especially as men, like men, we are so innately passive.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: And in fact, it's the it's the opposite of what we're called to be.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: And so just learning how to reject that passivity to really tune into the voice of the Lord, yeah.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: And and I um I just think it's interesting kind of circling back to where we started.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: We make a lot of references to our our parents, but I mean it's just our life.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: But it's funny, uh, I am now 50.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: How old am I?
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: 51.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: So I've been a lot a lot of years.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: And so it's funny to this day, if I miss a call from dad and I listen to the voicemail, it always goes like this Hey son, this is your dad.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: And then he says whatever he has to say.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I I don't know that you need to identify yourself.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Like, I know your voice.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: I know who you are.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I mean, and Jesus even says, like, my sheep, they know my voice.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: And so if we acknowledge the character, the consistent character of God that he pursues us, and someone who even doubts God may look at this to say, Well, I can see his pursuit.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Yes, this is clear he pursued Adam and Eve in the garden, right?
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: But he pursues us today.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: Like this is why Jesus came from heaven to earth.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: This is why he died on a cross out of John 3:16.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Like that was a pursuit for humanity.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Um, and he pursues us every day through the wind of the day.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like through that ruck, through that still small voice.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Man, if we could just listen to it.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Reminded of that story of the prophets.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: Was it in the thunder?
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: No.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Elijah, yeah.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: It was in the cleft of the rock.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, it's the still small voice of the Lord.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: Still small voice, yeah.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: I think so so many times we just miss it.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: Um because we're not ready for it, we're got too many distractions, or we just disobey it.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: Or maybe we don't want to hear it.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: Maybe, maybe, maybe I can hear it, but I want to refuse it because I'm having I'm taking so much delight in what I'm doing.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: I don't want to, I know I need to change, but I don't really want to change.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: So I don't really want to hear that right now.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, it is it's it it happens all the time that people in love, parents to their children, employees, employers to the employees, uh, pastors to their flock.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: Like I'm gonna in love, I gotta give you some advice.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: And I really want to hear that.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: Uh thank you, but I'm gonna reject it.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: Um, and that happens a lot.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Happens too much.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: So those are just some meditations from really, I think we kind of more focused on Genesis 3, 8, and 9.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Anything else you see through those texts you want to talk about today?
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: No, I think that covers, I think that covers a bunch of sort of just the general topic, just the way that God shows on the scene and the response that Adam and Eve have to it, but then to see God's graciousness um just encouraging and challenging at the same time.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: There is incredible beauty in God's pursuit of us in his continued invitation for relationship with us, yeah, even when he knows where we are, right, even when he knows what we've done, that's right, and even when we are walking in shame.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: And uh it's something to reflect on.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: He is uh pursuing us the hound of heaven.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: So with that being said, like we're we're two weeks into what will be four episodes kind of centering in on Genesis chapter three.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: Uh we kind of get started getting into the curse and the and the depravity of humanity that comes as a result of the curse in the next couple of weeks.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: But I hope this has been it's been beneficial for us.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: We're just kind of meditating out loud with you.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: I hope this has been thought-provoking for you, and maybe it it desires you to pursue scripture more.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Maybe it um, maybe it causes you to really lean in and hear, listen, listen to what the Lord is guiding you to do through prayer, through his word, through wise counsel.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: And uh so I pray that you're encouraged and that we can all pursue the Lord as He is pursuing us.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: So uh kind of going back to where we started, um, this is the High Dob Podcast, Ministry of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia.
