Latest / Birdland Territory / Pete Alonso hits No. 300 as O's win at Citi Field
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Quite a night at Citi Field.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Pete Alonzo hits his 300th homer to tie the game
- 0:11Speaker 2: in the ninth. And Kobe Baio hits a three-run inside
- 0:16Speaker 2: the park homer to win it in the 11th. He
- 0:19Speaker 2: got a weaver the hard way off the wall in
- 0:22Speaker 2: center field. What a crazy, dramatic, remarkable game, guys. And
- 0:28Speaker 2: we're here to talk about all that happened in that game.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And there were some other fun things to talk about
- 0:33Speaker 2: beyond the dramatic homers. But the reception for two nights
- 0:37Speaker 2: has been amazing. A curtain call. I mean, some things
- 0:41Speaker 2: you just don't see in baseball. And what are your
- 0:45Speaker 2: thoughts the morning after the 300th homer tied the game
- 0:49Speaker 2: in the ninth?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, still I kind of said it in
- 0:53Speaker 3: the last episode. I don't think I've ever seen anything
- 0:55Speaker 3: like this. Usually it's one at bat, and the player
- 0:58Speaker 3: kind of goes on the rest of the series, and
- 1:00Speaker 3: he gets his tribute video, and he has a couple. But,
- 1:02Speaker 3: I mean, to get a curtain call from the opposing stadium,
- 1:06Speaker 3: never seen it. And we might never see it again.
- 1:08Speaker 3: I mean, especially with a game time home run in
- 1:11Speaker 3: the ninth inning and the Mets fans on top of it,
- 1:14Speaker 3: it's a New York fan base, which, you know, they
- 1:16Speaker 3: have a reputation of being a little hostile.
- 1:19Speaker 4: So it's, it's kind of wild to me.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I think it's, has a lot to do with Pete
- 1:23Speaker 3: and then also just kind of the Mets frustration with
- 1:25Speaker 3: their front office and all the, you know, things that
- 1:28Speaker 3: kind of go into that, but it's, It's truly remarkable.
- 1:31Speaker 4: And just seeing.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Videos of Pete after the game, he got the 300
- 1:34Speaker 3: ball home run ball back from the fans. And I mean,
- 1:36Speaker 3: couldn't have been nicer. If you have a chance, go
- 1:38Speaker 3: check out that video. It was pretty awesome to see
- 1:41Speaker 3: and kind of just how genuine Pete is. And I
- 1:43Speaker 3: think Oriole fans are really starting to truly understand just
- 1:46Speaker 3: how humble and how much of a great human he
- 1:49Speaker 3: is on top of a great baseball player.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Just a crazy scene guys. And, and I thought it
- 1:55Speaker 5: was interesting. I'm not sure if you guys saw some
- 1:58Speaker 5: of the comments from some Mets players, Sean Manio started
- 2:01Speaker 5: last night's game. He even said like, all right, man,
- 2:03Speaker 5: this is a little much, but like maybe, maybe it'd
- 2:05Speaker 5: be cool if you cheer for us. Kind of, I'm
- 2:07Speaker 5: paraphrasing of course. You could tell he was a little
- 2:10Speaker 5: irked by the curtain call, but it's more of a
- 2:14Speaker 5: testament to Pete Alonzo in how good of a ball
- 2:18Speaker 5: player he was. And I, what he is as a
- 2:21Speaker 5: human being. And, and Brad, you brought up that video
- 2:24Speaker 5: and it was awesome. I think it was SNY that
- 2:27Speaker 5: tweeted it out and Pete couldn't have been nicer to
- 2:30Speaker 5: those fans, taking pictures, giving them bats, saying, Hey, you
- 2:34Speaker 5: guys ever want tickets to Camden yards? I'll give you
- 2:36Speaker 5: batting practice tickets. Like, please go. He just couldn't have
- 2:39Speaker 5: been a nicer guy, but I thought the topper to me, guys, Pete,
- 2:44Speaker 5: you just flashed up the graphics, Steve. The 10th fastest
- 2:48Speaker 5: player all time to 300 home runs. And that's such
- 2:52Speaker 5: a big moment for him and his career. But his
- 2:55Speaker 5: postgame presser with Rob Long of Masson or even in
- 2:59Speaker 5: the clubhouse, he was talking about his teammates. He wasn't
- 3:02Speaker 5: talking about himself. He was saying, man, how about the
- 3:05Speaker 5: bullpen really picking up Shane Boz after he had to
- 3:09Speaker 5: leave the game, scary comebacker that hit off his elbow.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Kobe Mayo with the inside the park home run. Pete
- 3:17Speaker 5: was almost deflecting and shining the light on those other
- 3:21Speaker 5: guys that came through in a big-time spot in last
- 3:24Speaker 5: night's win.
- 3:27Speaker 2: None of that they get to celebrate, though, without Pete
- 3:31Speaker 2: Alonso's homer. That's what his teammates would say back to
- 3:35Speaker 2: him because they're trailing 3-2 with two outs to go
- 3:38Speaker 2: in the game. And so he hits the homer with
- 3:41Speaker 2: one out in the ninth. off Cody Senga to tie
- 3:44Speaker 2: it at 3-3. It was number 36. He hit it 4-14.
- 3:49Speaker 2: He's got an 861 OPS for the year. All this
- 3:51Speaker 2: stuff is incredibly impressive. And so is this. This is,
- 3:57Speaker 2: he has the third most homers of any player through
- 4:01Speaker 2: their first eight seasons. This is Sarah Langs of MLB.com,
- 4:05Speaker 2: who has such incredible stats and notes that she researches.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Ralph Kiner, 329, Albert Bell, 319, and Pete Alonso, 300.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I actually wrote down Babe Ruth is 162, by the way,
- 4:18Speaker 2: because he was pitching for some of those years. So
- 4:20Speaker 2: he sort of eliminated him from playing every day and
- 4:23Speaker 2: hitting homers.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Hank Aaron, 253.
- 4:24Speaker 2: So, I mean, Pete Alonso has more homers through his
- 4:28Speaker 2: first eight seasons than Henry Aaron. And anybody who's not
- 4:31Speaker 2: on that list there kinder pulls Alonso. So just pretty
- 4:36Speaker 2: stunning stuff. RBIs still matter, at least the three of us.
- 4:39Speaker 2: We've made that clear. And this guy just racks up
- 4:43Speaker 2: homers in RBIs production. Production is his middle.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Name, I guess.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and the crazy part is he has– that includes
- 4:50Speaker 3: the 2020 season, which was only 40 games or whatever
- 4:52Speaker 3: the season was that year. So it just goes to
- 4:54Speaker 3: show how prolific he's been his first eight seasons, and
- 4:57Speaker 3: he hasn't stopped.
- 4:58Speaker 4: It doesn't seem like he's going to slow.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And we know Camden Yards is a much better hitting
- 5:02Speaker 3: park than Citi Field is.
- 5:04Speaker 4: So, I mean, you could just.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Imagine how many home runs he might hit the next
- 5:07Speaker 3: few years, the more comfortable he gets. Cause he got
- 5:09Speaker 3: off to such a slow start and was kind of
- 5:11Speaker 3: almost trying to figure out Camden yard. It seemed like
- 5:14Speaker 3: it almost, it was almost like he was thinking it
- 5:16Speaker 3: was city field still the way he was trying to
- 5:18Speaker 3: hit home runs. And he realized, Hey, right. Field's more
- 5:21Speaker 3: available than it is to left field. So he kind
- 5:23Speaker 3: of seemed to change his approach there in like about may.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And he's been back to hitting tons of home runs
- 5:28Speaker 3: like he does. So it's just been, ultra productive year
- 5:30Speaker 3: for pete and just uh continue to do what he
- 5:32Speaker 3: does and like we've mentioned probably 100 times on the
- 5:35Speaker 3: show everything and more you could possibly imagine from him
- 5:37Speaker 3: when they sign him to this big deal uh this offseason.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Yeah brad i was going to bring up that point
- 5:42Speaker 5: about the covid year like it makes you wonder they
- 5:45Speaker 5: played 60 games that year pete played in 57 so
- 5:49Speaker 5: pete missed out on a 100 games like where could
- 5:53Speaker 5: he have been second could he have been first all
- 5:55Speaker 5: time uh you know, through the first eight seasons of
- 5:59Speaker 5: a major leaguers career, he's just such a steady presence guys.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Like you can just look at his numbers and every
- 6:06Speaker 5: single year they're, they're pretty much identical what he puts
- 6:10Speaker 5: up in terms of home runs, RBIs, OPS, just a
- 6:14Speaker 5: rock solid player.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Impressive stuff for Pete Alonzo last night, but not everyone
- 6:21Speaker 2: did like it. You've noted Sean Mania. I want to
- 6:24Speaker 2: check out his quote. After the game last night when
- 6:27Speaker 2: we roll on Birdland Territory.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Hey, today's episode is presented by the ASPCA Pet Health

- 6:34Speaker 1: Kratts, we love our pups.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Yes, I love my mini golden doodle, Bella. But you
- 6:40Speaker 4: can't miss this opportunity. Just like Bella misses the ball
- 6:44Speaker 4: when you bounce it to her.

- 7:29Speaker 6: of insurance.
- 7:31Speaker 2: So Pete Alonzo hits number 36 in the ninth. The
- 7:34Speaker 2: Orioles beat the Mets in 11 innings 7-5. They've won
- 7:37Speaker 2: four of their last six, are 74-78, and with 10
- 7:40Speaker 2: to go, they're now 20-20 since they made the trades.
- 7:47Speaker 2: They were four games under. Now they're 500 with these
- 7:50Speaker 2: last couple of wins. And so if I can find
- 7:52Speaker 2: these quotes real quick. Shum and I, the Mets, was
- 7:56Speaker 2: not completely thrilled. He said of the cheers for Alonzo,
- 7:59Speaker 2: I've got nothing but respect for him.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I love him to death.
- 8:02Speaker 2: But as a team, the 26 Mets, I know we've
- 8:04Speaker 2: definitely underperformed. But the guys in here work their ass
- 8:07Speaker 2: off every day. To have that kind of reaction to
- 8:10Speaker 2: the opposing player could be anybody.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's crazy to me.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I've got nothing but respect for Pete, but I've never
- 8:15Speaker 2: seen anything like that before. I know the guys in
- 8:17Speaker 2: here were grinding our butts off and stuff like that happens.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I've never seen anything like that. Kind of crazy. So
- 8:26Speaker 2: I kind of get his point a little bit. If
- 8:30Speaker 2: we can force ourselves into their shoes, that would probably
- 8:35Speaker 2: be a little frustrating. Brad, you probably can somewhat.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Yeah, and I definitely understand it. I mean, like you said,
- 8:42Speaker 3: they're out there grinding, and it's tough when an opposing
- 8:45Speaker 3: player gets– probably more love than any one of their
- 8:47Speaker 3: players has gotten this entire season.
- 8:49Speaker 4: So it's, it's definitely frustrating.
- 8:51Speaker 3: And I have a lot of friends who are a
- 8:53Speaker 3: diehard Met fans growing up in New Jersey. I was
- 8:55Speaker 3: a Met fan as a kid and it's a, it's a,
- 8:58Speaker 3: it can be a tough fan base when you're winning.
- 9:00Speaker 3: They absolutely love you when you're losing, you're going to
- 9:02Speaker 3: hear from them. But I think this is just kind
- 9:04Speaker 3: of frustrated frustration boiling over where you're supposed to be
- 9:09Speaker 3: the top, if not one of the top three markets in,
- 9:11Speaker 3: in the entire league and you lose a player of
- 9:14Speaker 3: this stature to the Baltimore Orioles, he comes back, not
- 9:17Speaker 3: only ties the game in the ninth inning, it's his
- 9:19Speaker 3: 300th home run. They're just there in their minds. They're
- 9:22Speaker 3: thinking Pete Alonzo should have done that in a Met uniform.
- 9:24Speaker 3: There was no reason why. And I think they're just
- 9:26Speaker 3: kind of voicing their frustration with the front office. They're
- 9:29Speaker 3: chanting fire sterns while, you know, right after all the,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you know, his current call Pete's current call last night.
- 9:35Speaker 3: So it's, I just think it's frustration boiling over, but yes,
- 9:38Speaker 3: as a, as a player on that team, you, It's
- 9:40Speaker 3: got to be a little frustrating.
- 9:41Speaker 4: But at the same time, you're kind of underperforming this year.
- 9:44Speaker 4: So I don't know.
- 9:44Speaker 3: It's kind of one of those things. But I have
- 9:46Speaker 3: to agree with Shaman. I've never seen anything like that.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And I don't know if we'll ever see it again.
- 9:51Speaker 5: We said it yesterday. And for it to still carry
- 9:55Speaker 5: over a day later and for him to get a
- 9:57Speaker 5: curtain call. i steve you've been covering baseball a long
- 10:01Speaker 5: time have you ever seen an opposing player get a
- 10:03Speaker 5: curtain call i can't think of it off the top
- 10:05Speaker 5: of my head but look i do wonder circumstances right
- 10:11Speaker 5: if the mets were performing to the level that we
- 10:15Speaker 5: thought they would and and At this point, they have
- 10:18Speaker 5: a playoff spot wrapped up. They're competing for that division.
- 10:21Speaker 5: I do wonder what the reception would have been like
- 10:25Speaker 5: for Pete. I'm sure it still would have been positive,
- 10:26Speaker 5: don't get me wrong, but would it have been as
- 10:30Speaker 5: over the top as it has been these past couple days?
- 10:33Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 10:34Speaker 1: You know what?
- 10:35Speaker 4: Sorry, Steve.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I was going to say too, they keep flashing on
- 10:37Speaker 3: the screen. I saw it the first game. I've seen
- 10:40Speaker 3: it throughout the year. I've heard my friends talk about it.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Just how, how poorly the first baseman for the Mets collectively,
- 10:46Speaker 3: regardless of playing first base.
- 10:48Speaker 4: How bad they've done. I want to say.
- 10:49Speaker 3: As a team, I think he'd be 31st or 32nd
- 10:52Speaker 3: in the league at first base production. So this is
- 10:54Speaker 3: like just a big slap in the face when Pete
- 10:57Speaker 3: comes back, hits the home run. I just think it
- 10:59Speaker 3: was like a culmination of all of it. And just
- 11:02Speaker 3: seeing him do it in another uniform just has to
- 11:04Speaker 3: be infuriating.
- 11:05Speaker 5: It's also overlooked because of the 300th home run. But
- 11:09Speaker 5: how about Pete's diving stop in extra innings, by the way?
- 11:13Speaker 5: It was a heck of a defensive play in extras.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And if we could survey every one of those Mets fans,
- 11:20Speaker 2: which of course we cannot, I think their message I'm
- 11:24Speaker 2: speaking for them.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I guess I don't really have a right to, I don't,
- 11:26Speaker 1: I don't.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Know Mets fans, but my guess is the reason they
- 11:31Speaker 2: cheer is because of what the management of the team
- 11:35Speaker 2: let get away. It's like, they'd almost say to the clubhouse,
- 11:38Speaker 2: this isn't about you guys.
- 11:39Speaker 1: We love you guys. This is about what your bosses
- 11:43Speaker 1: let walk away and you don't have to help you now.
- 11:46Speaker 1: So that was a cheer.
- 11:47Speaker 2: For Pete and against Mets management. And I've heard two
- 11:51Speaker 2: reasons given for why they let him get away. One
- 11:54Speaker 2: is the Juan Soto deal. All that money went there.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And the second is, well, he's 31. Do you want
- 12:01Speaker 2: to sign him into his mid-30s? It feels like when
- 12:04Speaker 2: it's your guy, it's hard to let that get away.
- 12:09Speaker 2: And that's what I think Mets fans are feeling a lot.
- 12:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:12Speaker 3: And I mean, I mean, Pete's the all time leader
- 12:14Speaker 3: in home runs for Mets in the history of the franchise.
- 12:16Speaker 3: So you're talking about Hall of Fame players that he's
- 12:19Speaker 3: had more than Darryl Strawberry, David Wright, some of the
- 12:22Speaker 3: biggest names in Mets history. And they kind of just
- 12:25Speaker 3: let him walk away. Like I said, I don't know
- 12:26Speaker 3: the contract details or whatever. the case may be, but
- 12:29Speaker 3: I think in the eyes of Mets fans, they let
- 12:32Speaker 3: our guy, like you said, Steve, go away. And now
- 12:35Speaker 3: he comes back and he hits his monumental home run
- 12:38Speaker 3: in his career in a different uniform. So I just
- 12:40Speaker 3: think it was just a culmination of all of it
- 12:42Speaker 3: that like, you're supposed to be the Mets. You're supposed
- 12:44Speaker 3: to sign these guys and especially their guy, the leader
- 12:47Speaker 3: in home runs in the history of the Mets. And
- 12:49Speaker 3: now he's not playing for them. And he comes back
- 12:51Speaker 3: and hits this, you know, 300th home run. I just
- 12:54Speaker 3: think it was kind of a slap in the face
- 12:55Speaker 3: of the Mets fans that loved him so much. Obviously,
- 12:58Speaker 3: from the reception we've seen him gotten the last couple
- 13:00Speaker 3: of two nights.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 5: And I think it is kind of rubbing it in
- 13:04Speaker 5: David Stern's face, right? There've been several fire Stern's chance
- 13:09Speaker 5: over the past couple of nights, but I almost feel
- 13:11Speaker 5: like them cheering and being so over the top and,
- 13:15Speaker 5: and Pete hitting his 300th at city field. It's, it's
- 13:18Speaker 5: almost like they want to rub that in Stern's face.
- 13:21Speaker 4: We told you. Yeah, exactly.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Do you guys get the impression it was more
- 13:28Speaker 2: Stern's call than Steve Cohen?
- 13:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, it's a good question.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I don't know. And then, like, I just know from
- 13:38Speaker 3: back when I was with them and around that time,
- 13:40Speaker 3: there was an extension on the table for Pete long-term
- 13:42Speaker 3: that turned down. So there was all this back and
- 13:45Speaker 3: forth between, oh, he could have been a Met if
- 13:47Speaker 3: he wanted to. But at the end of the day,
- 13:49Speaker 3: it's last year he had one of his most productive seasons.
- 13:51Speaker 3: They had a chance to re-sign him. and the Orioles
- 13:54Speaker 3: came in and gave a better offer, which you would
- 13:55Speaker 3: think would never happen. That's just kind of the way
- 13:58Speaker 3: I'm looking at it now. Yes, there was opportunities in
- 14:00Speaker 3: the past to sign him long-term and keep him met forever,
- 14:03Speaker 3: but at the end of the day, they kind of
- 14:06Speaker 3: let him slip away, and I think it's just kind
- 14:08Speaker 3: of rubbed in their face now. So I don't know
- 14:10Speaker 3: if it was Steve Cohen or if it was David Stearns,
- 14:13Speaker 3: but obviously they together couldn't come down to a decision
- 14:17Speaker 3: to keep their franchise first baseman there for the rest
- 14:19Speaker 3: of his career.
- 14:20Speaker 6: I agree.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Related to Mike Messina in this sense, when he left
- 14:26Speaker 2: the Orioles for the Yankees and he came back the
- 14:29Speaker 2: first time, there were media saying he needed to cheer him.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And I said to those media guys, if it was
- 14:36Speaker 2: anybody but the Yankees, maybe they would. They're just not
- 14:40Speaker 2: cheering a Yankee. Now, if Pete Alonzo came back as
- 14:44Speaker 2: a Yankee against the Mets, Brad, you've been a Met.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I wonder if that would have been a different reception.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Yeah, probably would have been a little different. I would
- 14:52Speaker 3: imagine it probably would be a little different. Like I said,
- 14:56Speaker 3: I think the Orioles to the Mets are just kind
- 14:58Speaker 3: of the little brother. They're a cute team, a couple
- 15:02Speaker 3: states south, and they play in the AL East, but
- 15:04Speaker 3: they're not like the Dodgers.
- 15:06Speaker 4: They're not the Yankees.
- 15:07Speaker 3: They're not the bigger market Phillies.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Say he signed with the Phillies. He comes back.
- 15:12Speaker 3: As a Philly to Citi Field, he's probably not getting
- 15:15Speaker 3: the same reception. So it definitely, I think, has more
- 15:18Speaker 3: so to do with being against a team that's not
- 15:20Speaker 3: in their division, they're not competing against. And like Tim said,
- 15:23Speaker 3: I think it has a lot to do with where
- 15:24Speaker 3: they're in the standings also. If that was a tie
- 15:27Speaker 3: game and they're going for a pennant or they're trying
- 15:29Speaker 3: to make the playoffs, I don't think he's getting the
- 15:31Speaker 3: same reception. But I think it was just kind of
- 15:33Speaker 3: the perfect storm of kind of a little bit of
- 15:35Speaker 3: everything right now.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Interesting stuff.
- 15:39Speaker 2: They showed Cohen talking around the batting cage with Pete
- 15:42Speaker 2: on Monday night, I think. I wonder how that conversation went.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I mean, what did he say? Pete, I really messed
- 15:48Speaker 1: this up, man. Gosh, I wish I had a mulligan
- 15:50Speaker 1: on this.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I don't know what he said, but I mean, Pete,
- 15:54Speaker 2: to his credit, has never criticized the Mets. He always said, hey,
- 15:58Speaker 2: they did what they wanted to do rather than say,
- 16:02Speaker 2: you know, I don't know what they were thinking, you know,
- 16:04Speaker 2: what you could have said. So because I think media
- 16:07Speaker 2: has teed him up to say that and to be
- 16:09Speaker 2: critical and he just hasn't.
- 16:10Speaker 1: So he just is really good about stuff like that, too.
- 16:15Speaker 2: And I think Oriole fans this week already knew how
- 16:18Speaker 2: much this guy is going to mean for the team.
- 16:19Speaker 2: And and he just got cemented a little more with
- 16:24Speaker 2: what he did. Big Homer, big moment. It was fun
- 16:27Speaker 2: to watch from a distance here as Pete had a
- 16:30Speaker 2: wonderful night at Citi Field and so did the Orioles.
- 16:33Speaker 1: We'll talk more about that. Coming up here on Birdland Territory.
- 16:38Speaker 6: Eric Kratz, you're smart. You were a catcher in Major
- 16:41Speaker 6: League Baseball for a long time. You need to be
- 16:43Speaker 6: smart to be a catcher. And you also need to
- 16:45Speaker 6: be smart to get the best possible wireless plan that
- 16:50Speaker 6: you can get. Don't fall for the gimmicks or certain
- 16:53Speaker 6: types of sign-up bonuses. Just give me the cheap rate
- 16:57Speaker 6: and the premium wireless.
- 16:59Speaker 4: That's what Mint Mobile gives us. And you don't pay
- 17:02Speaker 4: a lot and you get a lot.
- 17:04Speaker 6: Hmm.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Seems like a no-brainer, even for what you said, a
- 17:08Speaker 4: smart guy.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Yep.

- 17:40Speaker 2: Kobe Mayo, three run inside the park home run in
- 17:44Speaker 2: the 11th. The center fielder just couldn't quite get there.
- 17:47Speaker 2: And so it was a Weaver the hard way in
- 17:50Speaker 2: the first inside the parker for the Orioles and Jorge
- 17:53Speaker 2: Mateo on August 20th, 2023. And that was dramatic too.
- 17:59Speaker 2: And Pete, by the way, had just struck out. And
- 18:01Speaker 2: the Orioles were about to blow a rally there. If
- 18:04Speaker 2: you don't score in the top inning and extra innings,
- 18:06Speaker 2: you're probably going to lose.
- 18:08Speaker 1: So that was as huge as it gets as well.
- 18:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 18:13Speaker 4: It's just funny seeing that on the same list. Baseball
- 18:18Speaker 4: is just amazing.
- 18:18Speaker 3: It's so fun every single night, but, Yeah, like you said, Steve,
- 18:22Speaker 3: that game could have been– I mean, he was very
- 18:23Speaker 3: close to catching that ball on center field last night
- 18:26Speaker 3: and going into that inning with no runs at all.
- 18:28Speaker 3: So kind of not a lucky break because obviously Kobe
- 18:32Speaker 3: Mayo hit it really well, and it goes to show
- 18:34Speaker 3: city field to center field plays gigantic because Kobe Mayo's
- 18:38Speaker 3: reaction when he hit it, it was a no-doubter. He
- 18:40Speaker 3: kind of stood there and watched it, and it didn't
- 18:42Speaker 3: get quite out, but it got out far enough and
- 18:44Speaker 3: banged off the wall there and kind of in the
- 18:46Speaker 3: perfect spot for– it would have at least scored two,
- 18:48Speaker 3: but it was nice to get that third run especially
- 18:51Speaker 3: in extra innings there with, you know, the kind of
- 18:53Speaker 3: you're succeeding the one run almost guaranteed every single inning,
- 18:56Speaker 3: it seems like. So that was a great insurance run
- 18:59Speaker 3: to get him all the way around the bases there
- 19:00Speaker 3: in the 11th.
- 19:03Speaker 5: Really remarkable to see how Kobe Mayo was able to
- 19:07Speaker 5: bounce back from a really, really tough start to the
- 19:10Speaker 5: season where since the all-star break, guys, he's been one
- 19:13Speaker 5: of their best players. I mean, maybe you could say
- 19:15Speaker 5: Pete and obviously CES has been really strong as well,
- 19:19Speaker 5: but Kobe Mayo now is second on this team in
- 19:22Speaker 5: home runs, which I don't know who could have predicted
- 19:25Speaker 5: that back in April or May. He's really blossoming down
- 19:30Speaker 5: the stretch, and it's just going to continue to make
- 19:33Speaker 5: those conversations about him, where does he fit in 2027,
- 19:38Speaker 5: that much more interesting because he is really coming into
- 19:41Speaker 5: his own before our eyes.
- 19:45Speaker 1: He really is.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Nine homers his last 25 games. That's about 90 at-bats.
- 19:52Speaker 2: He's hitting one every 10 at-bats. You get 500 or
- 19:55Speaker 2: 600 at-bats in the season. Do the math on that.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Pro-rate that out. Now they've got to find a position
- 20:03Speaker 2: for 2027. That's a big issue here. What's it going
- 20:06Speaker 2: to be? Did he even consider outfield here? because outfield
- 20:10Speaker 2: is where they need offense.
- 20:11Speaker 1: So I don't know if that pushes them even more
- 20:14Speaker 1: in that direction.
- 20:15Speaker 4: You know, it's interesting.
- 20:16Speaker 3: If you think about it, if Kobe Mayo had did
- 20:17Speaker 3: this last year at the end of the season, do
- 20:19Speaker 3: they go in the offseason and think about signing Pete Alonzo? Like,
- 20:22Speaker 3: it's just kind of funny how it all is kind of.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Coming full circle here.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Like, if Kobe Mayo had showed this last year, maybe
- 20:27Speaker 3: you don't go out in free agency and sign Pete
- 20:29Speaker 3: because you want to keep him more at first base.
- 20:31Speaker 3: I feel like they were getting more comfortable with him
- 20:33Speaker 3: at first base last year. So it's a good problem
- 20:36Speaker 3: to have, like we've mentioned a few times on the show.
- 20:38Speaker 3: You want to have as many hitters as you possibly can,
- 20:40Speaker 3: and hopefully you can find a position and find a
- 20:43Speaker 3: way to get them all out on the field at
- 20:44Speaker 3: the same time. So Kobe Mayo is definitely making it
- 20:46Speaker 3: harder on them to find somewhere to put him in
- 20:50Speaker 3: the lineup next year every single time. We know he's
- 20:52Speaker 3: going to be out there against the lefties, but I
- 20:54Speaker 3: think he's starting to prove it that he needs to
- 20:55Speaker 3: be out there every single.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Day, even if a ready starter is on the mound.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Performing better against right-handed pitching over the past month or
- 21:02Speaker 5: so and the numbers bear that out and it's also
- 21:05Speaker 5: worth mentioning guys that ces hit a solo home run
- 21:08Speaker 5: and had a multi-hit game right well so it's it's
- 21:15Speaker 5: it just makes the the situation that much more interesting.
- 21:20Speaker 2: So here is the oriole situation right now 74 and
- 21:24Speaker 2: 78 after the second.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Mets game, 10 left.
- 21:28Speaker 2: As we said, they were 54-58 at the deadline, 20
- 21:31Speaker 2: and 20 cents.
- 21:32Speaker 1: That's better.
- 21:34Speaker 2: As we know now, that's not good enough because they
- 21:37Speaker 2: need a few more wins there, and then they might
- 21:39Speaker 2: be on the doorstep of the playoffs. They're not eliminated.
- 21:41Speaker 2: They're not out of it. It's kind of dire at
- 21:44Speaker 2: this point, as we know. They kind of almost have
- 21:46Speaker 2: to roll off 10 wins here. They actually would need
- 21:49Speaker 2: to go 7-3 just to get to 500 the rest
- 21:52Speaker 2: of the way, so kind of challenging for the Orioles.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Shane Bosch took one off the right elbow.
- 21:56Speaker 2: The good news was x-rays were negative, and he told
- 21:59Speaker 2: reporters after the game he thinks he can make his
- 22:02Speaker 2: final start or two.
- 22:04Speaker 1: That is good. To me, guys, it was fun to watch.
- 22:07Speaker 2: The guy they call LDL, Luis De Leon, two scoreless.
- 22:12Speaker 2: He got out Juan Soto. He got out Lindor. He
- 22:15Speaker 2: got out Bichette. This guy was pitching at AA a
- 22:18Speaker 2: couple of months ago.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Four straight scoreless, five and.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Two-thirds, during which hitters in MLB are one for 16.
- 22:29Speaker 1: This is fun to watch.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it was really fun to watch.
- 22:32Speaker 3: And honestly, when I watched that Juan Soto at bat,
- 22:35Speaker 3: I've faced him before. I've seen tons of guys face him.
- 22:37Speaker 3: He does not take swings like he did in that at-bat.
- 22:40Speaker 3: It's just kind of like he was looking up at
- 22:42Speaker 3: the scoreboard, seeing the velocity, trying to figure out almost
- 22:46Speaker 3: what pitches he was throwing, and that to me goes
- 22:48Speaker 3: to show that he's got really good stuff. Juan Soto
- 22:50Speaker 3: can hit off of anybody he has done in his
- 22:52Speaker 3: entire career, and I just think that at-bat to me
- 22:55Speaker 3: proved that he's got something that most lefties or righties
- 22:59Speaker 3: or any pitcher in the major leagues don't have because
- 23:02Speaker 3: Juan Soto looked confused up there, and that was really
- 23:04Speaker 3: impressive to see. But his splitter he was throwing was nasty.
- 23:07Speaker 3: The slider, the sweeper, slider, whatever he throws is really
- 23:10Speaker 3: nasty too. Obviously, he has plus velocity from the left side,
- 23:14Speaker 3: and he just looked really comfortable out there. I feel
- 23:16Speaker 3: like he's looked comfortable even from that first appearance in
- 23:18Speaker 3: Coors Field. But I just think the more appearances he
- 23:21Speaker 3: gets under his belt, the better he's looking and even
- 23:24Speaker 3: more comfortable he's starting to look on the mound out there.
- 23:27Speaker 5: I've been super impressed with him, man. And down the stretch,
- 23:30Speaker 5: you're trying, someone like Luis De Leon, you're trying to
- 23:34Speaker 5: make an impact on this coaching staff, on this front office. Because, hey,
- 23:39Speaker 5: if you're him, I want to try to break spring
- 23:42Speaker 5: training with the club at opening day. Why limit yourself
- 23:45Speaker 5: at this point? You've already made your debut. And he's
- 23:48Speaker 5: proven that he belongs, guys. He really does. He's got
- 23:50Speaker 5: nasty stuff. The splitter is really, really filthy.
- 23:54Speaker 4: And.
- 23:55Speaker 5: they haven't eased him in. Remember Craig Albernaz? Hey, we're
- 23:58Speaker 5: going to keep him out of high leverage spots. Boom.
- 24:01Speaker 5: That spot in Colorado that you mentioned, Brad, he ended
- 24:04Speaker 5: up giving the home run, giving up the home run.
- 24:06Speaker 5: But even in that game, I thought he was really sharp.
- 24:09Speaker 5: It was just that one pitch. And, and remember in
- 24:12Speaker 5: that debut, I believe that was when Jackson holiday had
- 24:17Speaker 5: an error. His first couple of outings, his defense didn't
- 24:20Speaker 5: exactly help him out. So I've been really impressed with
- 24:24Speaker 5: Luis de Leon.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Hard not to.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Six-game sample, 245 ERA, 068 whip. Pretty strong stuff. Let's
- 24:33Speaker 2: give you another note or two on this young lefty
- 24:35Speaker 2: in a minute here on Birdland Territory.
- 24:38Speaker 5: For most of his minor league.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Career, with DeLeon, who was, I believe, a $ 40, 000 international signing,
- 24:59Speaker 2: by the way, at age like 19.
- 25:01Speaker 1: That's the league for international. And look at what he
- 25:04Speaker 1: turned into, preseason top 100. He was two-seam slider. You know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: get a heavy dose of ground balls, and the slider
- 25:15Speaker 1: put away. He started to throw the splitter last year,
- 25:18Speaker 1: just toyed with it. Really found it mid-season this year.
- 25:22Speaker 1: When I went to see him at Bowie in mid-year,
- 25:25Speaker 1: The coaches there told me the splitter, man, is coming
- 25:27Speaker 1: on fast for this kid. And last night, 12 two-seamers,
- 25:31Speaker 1: six split, one slider.
- 25:35Speaker 2: So to me, he's really leaning on this pitch at
- 25:37Speaker 2: the big league level, and it's been something to watch.
- 25:41Speaker 2: That split has come fast.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and I can only speak on my own experience,
- 25:47Speaker 3: but I was really fastball slider. I had a changeup
- 25:50Speaker 3: that I toyed with a little bit when I was
- 25:51Speaker 3: with San Diego, but when I got to Baltimore– For me,
- 25:54Speaker 3: that was a career changer. Just being able to throw
- 25:56Speaker 3: that kind of mind was a change up, but it
- 25:58Speaker 3: acted like a split finger fastball.
- 26:00Speaker 4: So it was for me, that was the biggest difference.
- 26:02Speaker 3: It helped me against opposite facing lefties and just really
- 26:06Speaker 3: made such a separation between my slider and my fastball.
- 26:09Speaker 4: And that's kind of what you see with him here.
- 26:11Speaker 3: I feel like if you have a two-seam slider, you
- 26:14Speaker 3: can have success at the big league level. But when
- 26:16Speaker 3: you mix in that third dominant pitch, which that splitter
- 26:19Speaker 3: to me really could be dominant, you just go to
- 26:21Speaker 3: the next level. And that's really, you know, Steve, I
- 26:23Speaker 3: had heard you, remembered you mentioning that he had started
- 26:27Speaker 3: tinkering with the split last year.
- 26:28Speaker 4: And to me, that's his separator.
- 26:30Speaker 3: And I think that's what can take him to the
- 26:32Speaker 3: next level and really become a big time either bullpen
- 26:35Speaker 3: or honestly in the rotation if they decide to bring
- 26:37Speaker 3: him back there.
- 26:38Speaker 4: That third pitch is going to be tremendous for him
- 26:40Speaker 4: for his career.
- 26:42Speaker 5: It's been nasty, and it's worth mentioning too, guys. He
- 26:46Speaker 5: transitioned into being a reliever. What did he have, Steve?
- 26:49Speaker 5: Four outings at Norfolk as a reliever? I mean, when
- 26:54Speaker 5: you throw in everything together, it just makes it that
- 26:57Speaker 5: much more impressive what he's doing. He looks really comfortable.
- 27:00Speaker 5: He looks like a reliever.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Yeah. we talked on a previous show about Craig Albert
- 27:06Speaker 2: as telling the media recently, when I asked about this,
- 27:10Speaker 2: you know, the whole organization sort of had a powwow
- 27:12Speaker 2: on this kid. Can we, should we do this or not?
- 27:15Speaker 2: And the consensus was, I thought we think he can
- 27:17Speaker 2: handle it. Let's throw them into the deep end. And
- 27:20Speaker 2: they did. And he's handled it. And he looks, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 2: he's getting out Juan Soto at city field.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I mean, holy cow.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Three weeks ago, who would have thought that?
- 27:30Speaker 2: And so to me though, if he's got these three pitches,
- 27:35Speaker 2: I still see a starter here. I hope that's what
- 27:38Speaker 2: they do. When I asked him about a week ago,
- 27:41Speaker 2: does he know the plans for 27? He didn't yet.
- 27:44Speaker 2: And so I don't, it'd be interesting to see, but
- 27:47Speaker 2: what do you guys think next year?
- 27:50Speaker 1: What do you do with this kid?
- 27:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it'd be interesting to see.
- 27:53Speaker 3: For me, I just feel like if he's not going
- 27:56Speaker 3: to be in the start in a starter role, I
- 27:58Speaker 3: still want to see him in the bullpen. And I
- 27:59Speaker 3: want to see him using like a multi inning because
- 28:02Speaker 3: there's a lot of, there's a lot of chances early
- 28:04Speaker 3: on the season when you don't want to push the
- 28:05Speaker 3: starters past a certain number of pitches past a certain
- 28:09Speaker 3: amount of innings to where you can throw a guy
- 28:11Speaker 3: like Albert Suarez is used two, three, four innings at
- 28:14Speaker 3: a time. And I just would love to see him
- 28:16Speaker 3: in a more extended role because I feel like last
- 28:18Speaker 3: night that two inning, I felt like he was getting
- 28:20Speaker 3: stronger as he got through a second inning. And to me,
- 28:22Speaker 3: that goes to show me that he can be a
- 28:24Speaker 3: starter and, and has the chance to give you length
- 28:27Speaker 3: for this rotation in the future. And it's, it's probably
- 28:31Speaker 3: end up being a numbers game. And I don't know
- 28:33Speaker 3: how many innings he threw this year, but I don't
- 28:34Speaker 3: think it's on the top end of what you would
- 28:36Speaker 3: want for a starter. So that's why I feel like
- 28:38Speaker 3: if you start them in the bullpen role and kind
- 28:40Speaker 3: of give them a chance to build up his innings
- 28:42Speaker 3: while he's on the big league roster, I just feel
- 28:44Speaker 3: like that would only benefit this kid at this point.
- 28:47Speaker 5: I think, At worst, guys, this is a player that
- 28:51Speaker 5: can certainly help the 2027 Orioles on the season, like
- 28:56Speaker 5: not just in the first here at the end for
- 28:59Speaker 5: September call-ups. Look, I don't want to give up on
- 29:02Speaker 5: Luis de Leon as a starter, and I think part
- 29:05Speaker 5: of how they approach LDL might be what they do
- 29:10Speaker 5: this offseason. Is Trevor Rodgers back? Do they acquire another
- 29:13Speaker 5: starting pitcher, whether that's through free agency or or a trade,
- 29:17Speaker 5: like how stacked is the cupboard in terms of the
- 29:22Speaker 5: starting rotation? And I think that might give them a
- 29:25Speaker 5: lean in how they handle Luis de Leon.
- 29:29Speaker 1: That's what I think.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I think the roster makeup of the team a couple
- 29:33Speaker 2: months from now, they make that final call, and it
- 29:36Speaker 2: could be one of those deals where they bring him
- 29:38Speaker 2: to spring training. Hopefully there is a spring training and
- 29:43Speaker 2: stretch him out so they have the option to do
- 29:46Speaker 2: either one. If they want him to start, he's thrown
- 29:50Speaker 2: some innings and you can always go back to relief
- 29:53Speaker 2: because look, he did it this year in the major leagues.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Luis De Leon is for real. It's so exciting to
- 29:59Speaker 2: see I had wondered for years, who's going to be
- 30:02Speaker 2: the first international pitcher to break through?
- 30:05Speaker 1: And this is the guy. And so he tells me
- 30:08Speaker 1: Yaki Rivera should be next. That's his choice. He's been
- 30:12Speaker 1: pitching very well at AAA when I asked Deleon the
- 30:15Speaker 1: other day.
- 30:15Speaker 2: It's so exciting to see someone from the international program
- 30:19Speaker 2: doing this at the major league level. And there is
- 30:21Speaker 2: more to come. Aaron Estrada just moved to AAA. They
- 30:25Speaker 2: just acquired NDA. Azokar, we talked about the other day.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Oriole International is humming, folks, and it's going to be
- 30:32Speaker 2: big because 25% of the clubhouse, on average, are international players.
- 30:37Speaker 2: It's a market you can not ignore if you want
- 30:40Speaker 2: to win Major League Baseball games. So exciting to see Visayo,
- 30:43Speaker 2: exciting to see Deleon, and more to come from that.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Steve, real quick before we end, I just got to
- 30:50Speaker 3: shout out the bullpen. That was a phenomenal job last night.
- 30:53Speaker 3: It's really, really becoming such a strength of this team,
- 30:55Speaker 3: and it's just something that I think Oriole fans– should
- 30:58Speaker 3: be extremely excited about moving forward in 2027 because they've
- 31:01Speaker 3: had multiple arms step up in big-time roles, and it's
- 31:04Speaker 3: been really fun to watch here the last couple months,
- 31:07Speaker 3: especially the last three or four weeks.
- 31:11Speaker 1: We should end the show with shout-outs. That's probably a
- 31:13Speaker 1: better way.
- 31:14Speaker 4: To do it.
- 31:14Speaker 3: I couldn't end the show without recognizing because that was
- 31:17Speaker 3: a phenomenal job last night.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Well, let me tell you, in the series at Citi Field,
- 31:21Speaker 2: no earned runs in 11 innings for the bullpen, an
- 31:23Speaker 2: incredible night last night when Bosco's out early. And by
