- 0:00Over the many years that I had the opportunity to go to the
- 0:04land of Israel, there were certain journeys that we would
- 0:09take when we went. One of the journeys we went on
- 0:14was called the Journeys of of Jesus.
- 0:18It was designed specifically to go only to the places where
- 0:22Jesus himself would have been. And so during those trips we
- 0:29would get up early the day after we arrived, and we would make
- 0:33our way to a place called the Tell of Megiddo.
- 0:40Now a Tell is a a city built upon a city built upon a city
- 0:45built upon a city. And so there are 25 different
- 0:49cities that have been built on the Tell of Megiddo over all the
- 0:52years. So it has risen very, very high.
- 0:58And so we take them to the tell of Megiddo and we make our way
- 1:01up the tell to the place where they were able to overlook the
- 1:06valley of Ezdrelon or the Jezreel Valley, or better known
- 1:11as the Valley of Megiddo. And there I would sit, everybody
- 1:17on rocks because there are no benches up there.
- 1:19There are no chairs up there. There's just a lot of rocks.
- 1:23And so we set everybody down on on the rocks and they are able
- 1:26to overlook this vast valley of Megiddo, the Jezreel Valley.
- 1:35And as they sit there, I take them with their Bibles to the
- 1:39Book of Revelation. And I tell them, this is what
- 1:43the Bible says in Revelation 16 verse #13 And I saw coming out
- 1:49of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast,
- 1:52and out of the mouth of the false prophet, 3 unclean
- 1:55spirits, like frogs. For they are spirits of demons,
- 1:59performing signs which go out to the kings of the whole world, to
- 2:04gather them together for the war of the great day of God the
- 2:08Almighty. Verse 16.
- 2:11And they gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is
- 2:18called Har Mageddon or Armageddon.
- 2:25And I take them there first because I take them to the end,
- 2:32not the beginning. We take the journeys of Jesus.
- 2:36We don't go to Bethlehem first. We go to the end 1st.
- 2:44And you know why? Because the end of a matter is
- 2:47better than its beginning, right?
- 2:49Ecclesiastes 7 verse #8 If you've been with us on Wednesday
- 2:52nights, you understand that. So we take them all the way to
- 2:55the end. And as we're, we're preaching on
- 2:58how it is that God is going to gather the armies of the East
- 3:02together in this vast valley, I have them overlook the valley to
- 3:07the other side, because on the other side of the valley is a
- 3:12little town that, you know, well called Nazareth.
- 3:19That's the hometown of, of Jesus.
- 3:25And I asked him this question. I wonder what it would be like
- 3:28to to be raised in Nazareth knowing that you are Jesus and
- 3:35you get up every morning and you're able to climb the the
- 3:40cliffs around Nazareth and overlook the valley and know
- 3:43that one day you as the King of all kings are going to gather
- 3:52together the nations of the world to fight against you.
- 3:59I wonder how many times our Lord did that?
- 4:01We have no record of anything that he did except when he was
- 4:0412 years of age outside of his birth and his dedication in the
- 4:10Temple. But outside of that, we, we
- 4:12don't know anything about his early childhood except when he
- 4:18was 12 and when he was 12. And he went to the Passover and
- 4:24was there and with his family. And of course they somehow left
- 4:29him behind. And when they came back to find
- 4:32him, he was in the temple conversing with the leaders of
- 4:35Israel. And of course, Mary, his mother
- 4:39said, where have you been? Don't you know we've been
- 4:42looking for you? And Jesus said those famous
- 4:47words. Don't you know that I have to be
- 4:51about my father's affairs? I have to be about my father's
- 4:58business? Christ was on a mission.
- 5:04He was on a unique and and special mission and he knew all
- 5:10about his Father's will. He came to do the Father's will.
- 5:18And so the affairs, the mission that Christ was on was one where
- 5:25he would reveal his, his deity. That's in John 1 and John 14,
- 5:36the Gospel of John. And not only did he come to to
- 5:40reveal his deity, he, he came to, to ravage the enemy.
- 5:47The prophecy of Genesis 3 verse #15 was fulfilled on Calvary.
- 5:54And so first John 38 tells us that when Jesus came, He came
- 5:59for this purpose to destroy the works of the devil.
- 6:04So he says to his mother, I had to be about my father's
- 6:06business. I have to reveal my deity.
- 6:11I have to ravage the enemy. I have to remove iniquity.
- 6:21That's found in first John 3 verse #5 or tells us that the
- 6:27Son of Man appeared for this purpose, that He might take away
- 6:33our sins. So He knew at a very early age
- 6:38that this was His mission to reveal the fact that He was God
- 6:45in the flesh, to reveal His Deity, to ravage the enemy, to
- 6:50remove iniquity. He was on a mission.
- 6:56He was on His father's mission. He came because His mission was
- 7:03to restore our dignity. That which had been lost in the
- 7:08fall in Genesis chapter 1, created the image of God had to
- 7:12be restored. And sure enough, first John 31
- 7:16says that we are the children of the living God.
- 7:19He restored our dignity. On top of that, He had to, He
- 7:23had to recover, recover our destiny.
- 7:28In John 14, he says because I live, you live.
- 7:30I am the resurrection and the life, if you, if you believe
- 7:34that you'll never die, He's going to recover our destiny
- 7:39because that is our Lord. I have to be about my Father's
- 7:45business. I have to, I have to ratify my
- 7:47authority. In Matthew 28, it says all
- 7:51authority has been given unto me, both in heaven and in earth.
- 7:57John 5, he talks about his authority to to raise the dead.
- 8:03So he tells his mother, I, I'm about my father's business.
- 8:08I have a mission. It's right on course.
- 8:13And I'm going to reveal my deity.
- 8:15I'm going to, I'm going to ravage the enemy.
- 8:17I'm going to, I'm going to remove iniquity.
- 8:19I'm going to restore man's dignity.
- 8:21I'm going to recover man's destiny.
- 8:25I'm the one that's going to ratify my authority, but he came
- 8:35so that he could return in glory and reign in majesty.
- 8:46So when we go on our journeys of Jesus, we take them to Mount
- 8:50Megiddo to tell them that he came to returning glory, that he
- 8:59might reign in majesty. He would come, reveal himself as
- 9:07the Lord of the universe, but he came to die, rise again, so he
- 9:16could return in glory and majesty.
- 9:22It's important to know that because I've told you before and
- 9:25you'll remember this, I hopefully you'll remember this,
- 9:29that the first prophecy in the Bible from man to man about God
- 9:40is not the prophecy of his first coming.
- 9:43It's the prophecy of His second coming.
- 9:47That's how important it is to know about the return of the
- 9:54king. It's recorded in Jude, Jude 14,
- 10:03Enoch, and the 7th generation from Adam prophesied saying
- 10:05behold, the Lord came. Not the Lord is coming, but the
- 10:09Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones to execute
- 10:15judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all
- 10:19their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and
- 10:25of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken
- 10:30against Him. Enoch, the 7th generation from
- 10:36Adam, would be the one who would prophecy about not his first
- 10:41coming, but His second coming. And I've already told you that
- 10:45every time the the first coming is mentioned, the second coming
- 10:49is mentioned 8 different times. And one out of every 25 verses
- 10:55in the New Testament is about the second coming of the
- 10:59Messiah. And outside the doctrine of
- 11:03faith. The doctrine of the second
- 11:04coming is the most prominent doctrine in the New Testament.
- 11:12It's imperative that you understand this.
- 11:15So Jesus, having grown up in Nazareth, would overlook the
- 11:24Jezreel Valley every morning, every afternoon, every evening.
- 11:30You can't miss it. It's humongous.
- 11:35And he would rise from his bed and he would overlook the
- 11:39valley. And I'm sure that there must
- 11:41have been so many things going through his mind, knowing that
- 11:45he came, that he was going to die and rise again.
- 11:48But one day he would gather all the nations of the world against
- 11:51him in that valley for the Great War of God.
- 12:00I wonder how many times or if any time he ever thought about
- 12:06that opportunity. And so the very first time that
- 12:14Jesus mentions his coming again is in Luke Chapter 9.
- 12:22If you got your Bible, you might want to turn there with me if
- 12:24you would. Luke Chapter 9.
- 12:32And this is how he says it. Luke Chapter 9, verse #26 For
- 12:37whoever is ashamed of me, in my words, the Son of man will be
- 12:43ashamed of him when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the
- 12:49Father, and of the holy angels. This is the first time that
- 12:56Jesus mentions His return. That is going to return in
- 13:03glory. Thus he will reign in in
- 13:08majesty. Remember, he refers to himself
- 13:11as the Son of Man. He refers to himself as the Son
- 13:16of Man over 80 times in the gospels.
- 13:24He does that because he wants to take everybody back to the book
- 13:28of Daniel, the 7th chapter, when Daniel has this vision of one
- 13:33like the Son of Man coming in great clouds of glory, and
- 13:41Jesus, when he calls himself the Son of Man, is taking everybody
- 13:45back to Daniel Chapter 7. And now, for the very first time
- 13:53in His earthly ministry, He's going to refer to His return in
- 13:58glory. And then he says these words.
- 14:06But I say to you truthfully that there are some of those standing
- 14:09here who will not taste death until they see the Kingdom of
- 14:13God. Well, what does that mean?
- 14:18That means some of you standing right here, some of you 12
- 14:21standing right here. I'm not going to die until you
- 14:25see the Kingdom of God. You go to the next chapter.
- 14:34It says some eight days after these sayings, he took along
- 14:39Peter, John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.
- 14:46Matthew's account and Mark's account says six days later.
- 14:51Luke says some 8 days later. Why is there a discrepancy?
- 14:58There isn't a discrepancy. Matthew and Mark record the six
- 15:03specific days in between day one which he made the announcement
- 15:08in day 8IN which the the the event actually occurred.
- 15:14So Luke will say some 8 days, Matthew and Mark say 6 days.
- 15:20So there's no discrepancy. It's very easily understood when
- 15:24you understand the the timetable of our Lord.
- 15:28And so it says, took Peter, James and John and went up in a
- 15:32mountain and while he was praying and the appearance of
- 15:35his face became different and his clothing became white and
- 15:40gleaming. Fact, if you read Matthew's
- 15:43account, his face would shine like the morning sun and be old.
- 15:50Two men were talking with him, and there were Moses and Elijah,
- 15:55who appearing in glory. We're Speaking of his departure,
- 15:59which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
- 16:02In other words, you're speaking to the Lord about his death, His
- 16:10departure, that which was going to happen in Jerusalem.
- 16:14He was going to be crucified. So Moses and Elijah are
- 16:20conversing with the Son of Man about his impending death.
- 16:29Verse 32. Now Peter and his companions had
- 16:33been overcome with sleep. When they were fully awake, they
- 16:37saw his glory. Matthew says that he was
- 16:44transfigured. He was he was metamorphosized.
- 16:50In other words, he he unzipped his flesh and the glory of the
- 16:54Lord would would shine forth. They saw his glory and they saw
- 17:00the two men standing with him. And as they were leaving him,
- 17:05Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here.
- 17:09Let us make 3 tabernacles, one for you and one for Moses and
- 17:13and 1:00 for Elijah not realizing what he was saying.
- 17:19That's very important because Peter, James, and John recognize
- 17:23Moses and Elijah. How did they do that?
- 17:30Was Moses carrying tablets of the commandments?
- 17:37Was Elijah on a chariot filled with fire?
- 17:43What? What would they have?
- 17:43A big E on his chest? How did he know this was Moses
- 17:47and Elijah? That this goes to tell you that
- 17:50when you get to heaven, you'll recognize everybody that's
- 17:53there. That's just a good thing.
- 17:57You all say, well, where's the apostle Paul?
- 17:59You'll know where he is. Although when you get to heaven,
- 18:02that won't be your first look up.
- 18:07It'll probably be me, your pastor.
- 18:09No, that's not true. It'll be the Lord Jesus.
- 18:13You'll be consumed with him. But interesting that they were
- 18:16able to recognize Moses and Elijah.
- 18:19And so why does, why does Peter say, let's build 3 Tabernacles
- 18:23here? What we told you last week,
- 18:25Zechariah 14 that in the Kingdom of God they will celebrate the
- 18:31Feast of Tabernacles. So Peter, knowing the Old
- 18:35Testament like he did, would say, well, let's build 3
- 18:38Tabernacles right here. One for you and one for Moses
- 18:42and and 1:00 for Elijah. And he would also know Malachi 3
- 18:47and Malachi 4 that before the coming Kingdom of God and the
- 18:52day of the Lord, one like Elijah would come.
- 18:56So he knows that. That's why he's saying let's
- 19:00build 3 tabernacles. Quite a scene.
- 19:08While he was saying this, the cloud formed, began to over
- 19:12shadow them, and they were afraid as they entered the
- 19:14cloud. Then a voice came out of the
- 19:17cloud saying, This is my son, my chosen one, listen to him.
- 19:23And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.
- 19:30Now notice this, it says. And they kept silence and
- 19:35reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had
- 19:41seen. How could you not do that?
- 19:46How could you not say anything when we know from Matthew's
- 19:50account that Jesus told them, don't say anything.
- 19:57And the voice had come from heaven, which is the Lord God
- 20:01his Father, who said, This is my beloved, said, Listen to him.
- 20:06So whatever he tells you, listen to him.
- 20:08And Jesus then says, don't tell anybody what you just saw.
- 20:17Why? Why?
- 20:21Why not tell anybody? Well, there could be several
- 20:25reasons. One, because if Rome found out
- 20:29about it, they would think that this one, Jesus would be
- 20:33deciding to have some kind of insurrection to set up his
- 20:36Kingdom or the Jews would would incite him to be their leader.
- 20:41And they already wanted to be their leader because he fed the
- 20:445000 earlier. They wanted to be the leader.
- 20:47So this would always increase that all the more that could
- 20:52possibly be. But I think there's something
- 20:56much more important than that. And that is in order for the Son
- 21:02of Man to be glorified, he had to die and rise again.
- 21:09That has to happen. He has to.
- 21:14He has to. After revealing his deity, he
- 21:19must ravage the enemy. That's a prophecy of Genesis
- 21:22315. It must happen.
- 21:27He he must remove iniquity. But he can't do that unless he
- 21:31dies on Calvary's cross. All that must happen first.
- 21:39He must restore man's dignity. He must recover man's destiny so
- 21:46that he will one day return in glory.
- 21:48But the order is very important. So he tells them, don't say
- 21:53anything. And they didn't until Peter
- 21:58spoke about it. And second Peter 116 to to 19
- 22:03And John spoke about it in John chapter one we beheld his glory.
- 22:10The glories are the only begotten of the Father, full of
- 22:12grace and truth. Same would be true of James.
- 22:19They would speak about it after His death, burial, and
- 22:23resurrection because they wanted everybody to know that He's
- 22:27going to return in glory and reign in majesty.
- 22:36The King is coming again. So important to understand this.
- 22:46So important to realize that Jesus is going to come again.
- 22:54We are right in the midst of Paul's first letter to the
- 22:58Thessalonians. This is our ninth week in
- 23:04chapter 4 verse #13 through chapter 5 verse #11 and we won't
- 23:09finish this week, and we might not even finish next week.
- 23:14But that's OK. Because you see, you must
- 23:18understand how important this is for your life.
- 23:26It's all about living, as we have seen in first Testimonies
- 23:29413 and 18, about anticipation, about expectation.
- 23:34That's the model life, living in anticipation of the day of
- 23:38Christ and then living with alertness.
- 23:43That's chapter 5, verses 1 to 11 for the day of the Lord, the day
- 23:49of Christ stands around the rapture of the church and the
- 23:52day of the Lord stands around the retribution and the
- 23:56revelation of God at the end. And therefore it's important to
- 24:05understand all that's happening and why we can't give you all
- 24:09the details we we have on our website a series called the
- 24:13Return of the King. If you want to know a a step by
- 24:18step process through the coming of the King at when it when it
- 24:25comes for his own until the very end, the eternal state, that
- 24:29series would be one for you to listen to as you go back and
- 24:32forth to work or back and forth to school wherever you go.
- 24:36Because it goes into great detail about why Jesus must come
- 24:40again and why the church won't go through the tribulation.
- 24:43And how do you know that? And what is it about the rise of
- 24:47the Antichrist and how does that happen?
- 24:49And what about Israel and what about the future?
- 24:52And it just goes into great detail from the beginning to the
- 24:54end to show you how the end is all about the King, His glory,
- 25:00His Majesty, His coming again. It is my heart's passion for
- 25:10people to understand the coming of Jesus.
- 25:16It motivates everything in life like nothing else does.
- 25:23And so I want to talk to you about the coming of Jesus.
- 25:27And I'm not going to finish it today.
- 25:29It's obvious, but at least I can begin it for you today and let
- 25:34you know that His coming is a sure event.
- 25:41You can bank on it. We know that from what Zechariah
- 25:48tells us. Zechariah Chapter 14 verse #1
- 25:54Behold, today is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from
- 25:57you will be divided among you. For I will gather all the
- 26:01nations against Jerusalem to battle.
- 26:03The city will be captured, the houses plundered, the women
- 26:06ravished, and half the city exiled, but the rest of the
- 26:11people will not be cut off from the city.
- 26:13Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations, as
- 26:17when he fights on a day of battle.
- 26:19And in that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
- 26:23which is in front of Jerusalem on the east.
- 26:25And the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to
- 26:30West by a very large valley. So half of the mountain will
- 26:33move toward the north and the other half toward the South.
- 26:38Now you think about that and think about what the Jewish
- 26:41people know. Think about the triumphal entry
- 26:45into Jerusalem. And to see the people saying as
- 26:49praises that they would quote the Old Testament about Psalm 40
- 26:54and Psalm 110 about the coming one or Psalm 118, that the one
- 26:58who was about to come the, the title for the Messiah, blessed,
- 27:02I see you, comes in the name of the Lord.
- 27:04And remember, they took off their garments and they, they,
- 27:07they took palm branches and they began to, to, to, to wave them
- 27:11back and forth in honor. And they take their clothes off
- 27:15and garments so that the king, when he wrote over them, it
- 27:18would show their, their total submission to the King's
- 27:21authority. And the Bible tells us in Luke
- 27:2419 that that they, they praised him not for his for his message,
- 27:28but for his miracles. But remember they, they were
- 27:33thinking of Zechariah 14. He's coming down the Mount of
- 27:37Olives. They're on the Mount of Olives.
- 27:42And they're thinking that Zechariah 14 says he's going to
- 27:45stand on the Mount of Olives. He's going to split the Mount of
- 27:47Olives. This is the king.
- 27:52And they know Zechariah 9 verse #9 that's a prophecy that was
- 27:57fulfilled on that day. Zechariah 99 says, rejoice
- 28:01greatly, O daughter of Jerusalem, shout and triumph, O
- 28:04daughter of Jerusalem. That's exactly what they did.
- 28:07They were shouted in joy. Behold, your king is coming to
- 28:11you. The coming one is arriving.
- 28:14He is just and endowed with salvation, humble and mounted on
- 28:19a donkey. So they know this.
- 28:27These are Jewish people. They're well versed in the Old
- 28:31Testament. Here is the king coming on a
- 28:34donkey. Zechariah prophesied that.
- 28:37He also prophesied. He'll stand on the Mount of
- 28:38Olives. He'll split the Mount of Olives.
- 28:40They didn't see any gap between his first coming and his second
- 28:45coming. They didn't see that.
- 28:51They didn't understand that. They saw all this one arrival. 1
- 28:56Advent but there are two advents.
- 29:00There were two comings and so they would praise him, but he
- 29:07didn't split them out of olives. No, he he went to the city,
- 29:12looked around and left, came back the next day and cleanse
- 29:18the temple, cursed the fig tree, came back the next day and
- 29:23preached all day. They're like, where is the
- 29:28splitting of the mountain? Where is the the rivers that
- 29:34will flow? Where is the king?
- 29:39And by Friday they yelled, crucify him.
- 29:42They didn't meet their expectations yet.
- 29:50Because He will. Because He's coming again.
- 29:55That's why in Luke 9, when Christ referenced everything
- 29:58about his coming and glory and the Kingdom of God, his men
- 30:03would understand that there's going to be another arrival,
- 30:08another coming. He would know that as He was
- 30:12raised in Nazareth, get up and overlook the city, overlook the
- 30:19Jezreel Valley. In fact, if you recall, even in
- 30:28Luke's Gospel in the 4th chapter, when he was going to
- 30:33read in the synagogue, says in verse #16 And it came to
- 30:42Nazareth where he had been brought up, and as was his
- 30:47custom, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath.
- 30:50That's what Jesus did. Every Sabbath He was in the
- 30:53synagogue. Every self respecting Jew would
- 30:57be in the synagogue on the Sabbath.
- 30:59That's what they did. Instead of to read, What was he
- 31:03reading? And the book of the prophet
- 31:06Isaiah was handed to him. Why?
- 31:08Because there's a very systematic reading of the Old
- 31:11Testament in the synagogue. And it just so happened that in
- 31:18the Providence of God He was asked to read on this day
- 31:24because he would read from Isaiah 61.
- 31:28That was the reading for the day.
- 31:31So the Providence of God, he opened the book and found the
- 31:35place where it was written. The Spirit of the Lord is upon
- 31:38me because He anointed me to preach the gospel of the poor.
- 31:41He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives,
- 31:45recovery of sight to the blind, set free those who are
- 31:49oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.
- 31:56And He closed the book. Isaiah 61 verse #1 He stops
- 32:04right there. Why?
- 32:06Because this was the day where He would reveal His deity.
- 32:10This was the day He came to ravage the enemy.
- 32:12This is the day He came to remove iniquity.
- 32:15This was the day He came to recover man's destiny.
- 32:20This was the day where he came to restore man's dignity.
- 32:27The favorable year of our Lord, the year of redemption.
- 32:32For the very next phrase in Isaiah 61 says, and the day of
- 32:38vengeance. But this wasn't the day of
- 32:42vengeance. Not yet.
- 32:47It was coming, but it wasn't the day.
- 32:53There would come a day of vengeance.
- 32:56But on this day in Nazareth, it was not the day.
- 33:02And you know the story. They, they marvel at what he
- 33:04said. Is this not Joseph's son?
- 33:09And then they, they became so angry at what he would say to
- 33:13them later on in that conversation that they would
- 33:15take him to this, this brow of a Cliff to throw him off so as to,
- 33:20to kill him because they were so angry with him.
- 33:26Wow. But he escaped by divine
- 33:30Providence. He escaped through the crowd.
- 33:35We go to this place in Nazareth, this Cliff, not necessarily the
- 33:43literal place, but it is a traditional place.
- 33:46It's a high Cliff. It overlooks the Jezreel Valley.
- 33:51But they could not kill him. Why?
- 33:53It wasn't. It's time to die.
- 33:55And he wasn't going to die that way anyway.
- 33:56He's going to die on Calvary's cross.
- 33:58It was all predestined, all predetermined.
- 34:03And so through a miracle, he escaped the crowd.
- 34:07They did not kill Him on that day.
- 34:10Why? Because there would be a day He
- 34:12would die on Calvary's cross. He would rise again.
- 34:16And what He would say in Acts chapter one, or the angels, or
- 34:23the two men in white apparel would say, Men of Galilee, why
- 34:27do you stand gazing up into heaven?
- 34:29Do you not know that the same Jesus will return in the same
- 34:34way in which He left? It is a sure event is ironclad.
- 34:44He's coming again. We gathered together to
- 34:47celebrate the Lord's table because we proclaim his death
- 34:52until he comes. That's why on the
- 34:57Transfiguration, Christ said to his men, don't say anything.
- 35:01Why? Because you need to proclaim my
- 35:03death until I come again. They need to know that I, I came
- 35:10to die. I I came to remove their
- 35:13iniquity. I came to ravage the enemy.
- 35:14I came to do all this. I came for this purpose.
- 35:17I have a mission. I must be about my Father's
- 35:20business. I want to one day returning
- 35:22glory, but not yet. But I am coming again.
- 35:28It is a sure event. A sure event and in Revelation
- 35:35chapter 22, last chapter, book of the Bible, three times, verse
- 35:41#7, verse #12, verse #20 Jesus says, behold, I'm coming
- 35:47quickly. The last promise of the Bible is
- 35:52I'm coming. I love that I'm coming.
- 35:57I'm you better be ready, I'm coming.
- 36:00That's why the model life is built around anticipation and
- 36:02alertness. You live in anticipation of his
- 36:06arrival, and you're alert because no one knows the day nor
- 36:10the hour. But let me close with this.
- 36:17It's not where I planned on closing, but I'll close here in
- 36:24Luke's gospel, the 17th chapter, This event we'll talk about next
- 36:31week. It's not just a sure event.
- 36:35It is a surprising event. It is a sudden event.
- 36:42It is a supernatural event. It is a slaughtering event.
- 36:52It is a sovereign event. It is a satisfying event.
- 37:01And I'll cover all these with you next week, but it is a
- 37:04sobering event, a very sobering event.
- 37:14Listen what Jesus says in in Luke 17.
- 37:20He says in verse 24, we're just like the lightning when it
- 37:24flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of
- 37:28the sky. So will the Son of Man be in his
- 37:31day, but first he must suffer many things and be rejected by
- 37:38this generation. And just as it happened in the
- 37:43days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man.
- 37:49They were eating, they were drinking, and they were
- 37:51marrying. They were being given in
- 37:53marriage until the day that Noah entered the ark and the flood
- 37:56came and destroyed them all. It was the same as happened in
- 38:01the days of lot. They were eating, they were
- 38:04drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were
- 38:06planting, they were building. But on the day that lot went out
- 38:12from Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and
- 38:16destroyed them all. It will be just the same on the
- 38:21day that the Son of Man is revealed.
- 38:26On that day the one who was on the housetop and whose goods are
- 38:31in the house must not go down to take them out, and likewise the
- 38:36one who was in the field must not turn back.
- 38:41And they says these words. Remember lots wife, Why did you
- 38:53put that there? Because she, like so many,
- 39:01desired the world. She could not divorce herself
- 39:08from the world. She loved Sodom.
- 39:18She desired the things of the world.
- 39:24And because she desired the world, she would defy the word
- 39:36of God. Those who desire the world will
- 39:42always defy the word of the living God, the Angel said.
- 39:48Do not look back. There's nothing there for you.
- 39:56Everything before you is what you need to be looking toward,
- 40:02not behind you. Jesus said no man, having put
- 40:07his hand at the plow and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of
- 40:13God. There's nothing back there for
- 40:16you. Your past life has nothing for
- 40:19you. But she desired the world so
- 40:25much that she would defy the word of the living God.
- 40:34Why would she do that? Because in her heart she
- 40:38disbelieved the warning from God.
- 40:45She didn't think anything would happen.
- 40:48She thought that God was the God of love, God grace, compassion,
- 40:55mercy, and he is. But when he gives a warning and
- 41:00says don't do this, he means exactly what he says, don't do
- 41:04this. And so in her desire for the
- 41:11world and in her disobedience to the Word of God, she disbelieved
- 41:25the warning from God. And thus she died.
- 41:33On the way from Sodom, she was turned into a pillar of salt.
- 41:42How tragic. You see, the coming of Christ is
- 41:46a very sobering event. Many people will die, many loved
- 41:58ones will be left, and therefore we must understand the
- 42:04imperative to preach the gospel. That's why we celebrate the
- 42:09Lord's Table. As a reminder, as often as you
- 42:14eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim my reason for
- 42:18coming until I come again. You proclaim my death the way to
- 42:30life until I come again. It is a sure event.
- 42:40I wonder if you are ready for the return of the King, His
- 42:45coming again. You can be like those the second
- 42:50Peter chapter 3 who mock the coming of Jesus.
- 42:53Where is the promise of us coming?
- 42:57It's been 2000 years. Everything goes as it's always
- 43:04gone before. Nothing's going to change but
- 43:09escapes to notice that one day our Lord warned about a coming
- 43:15flood and it happened, destroyed the world.
- 43:21And one day he's coming again. But he won't destroy the world
- 43:25with water, He'll destroy it with fire.
- 43:30But he's coming because He promised.
- 43:35And our God is the God of truth. He never lies.
- 43:40He's coming again. My prayer is that you'd be ready
- 43:43for his return. Let's pray.
- 43:46Father, we thank you for today. So much to say, so very little
- 43:52time to say it yet. We trust that the things that
- 43:56were preached today would be what You wanted us to hear.
- 44:03And as we partake of the Lord's Table, may we be ever mindful
- 44:10that You are certainly coming again.
- 44:16Your death was not the end, it was the beginning of the end.
- 44:21It was everything. And we celebrate that because
- 44:26you are the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world.
- 44:30Pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
