Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Fabian Yukich: New Zealand Winegrowers Chair on the alcohol licensing restrictions for events
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I spoke to the Prime Minister yesterday about this critical
- 0:02Speaker 1: minerals deal that they are potentially doing with the United States,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and everybody is absolutely art reult. Not everybody, I mean
- 0:10Speaker 1: the opposition parties are absolutely outraged about it. I like
- 0:14Speaker 1: what ACTS says. The ACT Party says, because this is
- 0:16Speaker 1: critical rare Earth Minerals Act says, we'd else we would
- 0:20Speaker 1: be hypocritical to try and stop this. We all use
- 0:23Speaker 1: and benefit from the devices that are made from these minerals.
- 0:27Speaker 1: So restricting mining here just means that if the US
- 0:30Speaker 1: can't get those minerals from New Zealand, they will be
- 0:33Speaker 1: dug up somewhere else, probably somewhere with poor environmental oversight
- 0:37Speaker 1: and more child labor. I talked to you about that
- 0:39Speaker 1: in two minutes Time News Talk said, b did you
- 0:44Speaker 1: see the story out yesterday where Nelson's me and Nick
- 0:46Speaker 1: Smith walked into a vineyard couldn't get a bottle of
- 0:49Speaker 1: wine in a vineyard. This was at the Ready to
- 0:52Speaker 1: Roll Gig and Nelson. They featuring Stella, the Mockers, the dudes.
- 0:57Speaker 1: He was told it's cup only apparently, and he's taken
- 1:00Speaker 1: a swipe at what he calls over zealous alcohol licensing laws.
- 1:04Speaker 1: New Zealand Wine Gros chair Fabian Yukich joins me this morning, Fabian.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Good morning, good morning. How are you.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'm very well, thank you thanks for being up and
- 1:12Speaker 1: early with me. What's the situation? What is the rule here?
- 1:18Speaker 2: I understand the rule is made by the Council New
- 1:22Speaker 2: Zealand Health and the police in conjunction with the winery,
- 1:26Speaker 2: but the winery doesn't get a lot of choice in it.
- 1:29Speaker 2: They can choose to go to a hearing, but they
- 1:31Speaker 2: don't want to go to a hearing that involves a
- 1:33Speaker 2: lot of time and effort and probably cost, so they
- 1:37Speaker 2: basically told what they have to do. What's the RST? Sorry, yeah,
- 1:43Speaker 2: what is the rationale? That's hard to tell. The rule
- 1:47Speaker 2: I suppose is there to perhaps stop people from drinking
- 1:52Speaker 2: too much, but in fact it's very unpractical and it
- 1:55Speaker 2: doesn't really achieve that anyway. At the type of concert
- 1:59Speaker 2: that was held at Nudo, which is one of New
- 2:00Speaker 2: Zealand's most iconic wineries, it's a very relaxed affair and
- 2:05Speaker 2: you can imagine you go there with a couple of friends,
- 2:07Speaker 2: you grab a blanket and one person stays there to
- 2:10Speaker 2: hold the place in the audience. Another person goes to
- 2:13Speaker 2: get some food, and the third person goes to the
- 2:15Speaker 2: queue to get some wine and they told they're only
- 2:18Speaker 2: allowed two cups and there's three people there, so it's
- 2:21Speaker 2: an impossible and impractical situation. And that's what they faced with.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I mean Nudoff itself. The winery have got a very
- 2:29Speaker 2: good relationship with the council, but this is all about
- 2:32Speaker 2: the customer. It's about the experience, and it's the people
- 2:36Speaker 2: like next Smith to go to these concerts that are frustrated.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Is it the bottle like they worried someone will throw
- 2:42Speaker 1: a bottle because it's glass, or is it just the
- 2:44Speaker 1: amount you can get?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Look, I'm not one hundred percent sure, maybe a little
- 2:50Speaker 2: bit of both. But that winery, like a lot of
- 2:53Speaker 2: wineries around New Zealand, had experienced Nudoff itself over twenty
- 2:58Speaker 2: years of holding concerts and they've never had any problems before.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Very relaxed affair and that just doesn't happen. So you
- 3:07Speaker 2: can do risk analysis and management and say I'm going
- 3:10Speaker 2: to cut out every possibility of anything going wrong, but
- 3:14Speaker 2: in the end that becomes impractical. So a little bit
- 3:17Speaker 2: of common sense would be very helpful.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Sounds like it's a bit missing there, Fabian appreciate your
- 3:22Speaker 1: time this morning. Thanks for being with me. Fabian U Kitchen,
