- 0:00Hello there , and welcome to Spy Trader !
- 0:03It's 6 am on Wednesday , April 22nd , 2026 , here in sunny Pacific time .
- 0:09I'm your host , Sunny Sideup , and I am so glad you're joining me for our morning market checkin .
- 0:15We have quite a busy morning as the markets are navigating what we're calling a rebound phase after a pretty rocky start to the year .
- 0:22The big news today is all about diplomacy .
- 0:25President Trump has announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran .
- 0:30This is giving investors a big sigh of relief , lowering those energyrelated worries and helping our stock futures trend higher this morning .
- 0:38Looking at the numbers , the S&P 500 , or the SPY , is sitting around 7,064 , up about 1.6 percent for the year .
- 0:48But the real star this month is the techheavy Nasdaq , the QQQ , which has jumped 15 percent in April alone as everyone dives back into the AI powerhouse narrative .
- 1:00We're seeing a shift away from the energy stocks that did so well earlier this year and a move back into growth .
- 1:08For instance , semiconductor giants like Nvidia and ASML are leading the charge now that those fears about overbuilding AI infrastructure have started to fade .
- 1:20In other news , UnitedHealth Group gave the healthcare sector a boost after beating earnings , and Boeing just reported a much smaller loss than expected this morning with a recordbreaking 695 billion dollar backlog .
- 1:34That is a lot of planes !
- 1:36We also saw AT&T showing steady growth in their 5G and fiber business , proving they are still a solid choice for those looking for stability .
- 1:46On the macro side , the Federal Reserve is keeping interest rates between 3.5 and 3.75 percent .
- 1:53Everyone is watching Kevin Warsh , the nominee for Fed Chair , who wants to focus on getting inflation down to that 2 percent target .
- 2:01Even with the ceasefire , oil is still around 99 dollars a barrel , so we aren't totally out of the woods regarding inflation .
- 2:10Now , looking ahead to later today , all eyes are on Tesla .
- 2:15They report earnings after the bell , and everyone is waiting for updates on their Robotaxi rollout in Dallas and Houston .
- 2:22With the stock trading near 386 dollars , it is in a real breakout spot .
- 2:28So , what should we be doing with our portfolios ?
- 2:31If you are looking for aggressive growth , the Invesco QQQ Trust is still the primary way to play this April tech rally , especially with the momentum in AI monetization from companies like Microsoft .
- 2:45If you want a defensive hedge , do not ignore gold .
- 2:49The SPDR Gold Shares , or GLD , is up over 11 percent this year and acts like a great insurance policy while geopolitical tensions remain unresolved .
- 2:59For a value play , Boeing is looking like a great turnaround story now that their crisis years seem to be ending .
- 3:06If you are hunting for income , the Vanguard Real Estate ETF , or VNQ , is becoming attractive as property markets finally stabilize .
- 3:16And for those who want safety , locking in yields with the iShares 20 plus Year Treasury Bond ETF , known as TLT , is a smart move while yields are near 4.3 percent .
- 3:28My final strategy for you today is to use these green days to trim some of your energy positions and rotate into growth sectors for the earnings wave .
- 3:38Keep some gold in your pocket just in case , and definitely keep a close watch on Tesla tonight .
- 3:44A big move there could set the tone for the whole market .
- 3:48Thanks for listening to Spy Trader .
- 3:50I am Sunny Sideup , and I will see you in a few hours !
