- 1:22Speaker 1: You had your finger, your nose. It's the greatest value
- 1:25Speaker 1: online other than porn.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Think of that. That's value. Man.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Hey, welcome to today's Radio Archive Hour. This is from
- 1:30Speaker 1: nineteen ninety nine. This is from Christmas time around nineteen
- 1:33Speaker 1: ninety nine. I don't know if you remember, but there
- 1:36Speaker 1: were Furbies and there were some cabbage patch dolls that
- 1:38Speaker 1: were malfunctioning, and I think there was actually a story
- 1:42Speaker 1: about one or two of them biting children. The teeth
- 1:45Speaker 1: would close on a kid's hand or something. Well, Stephen Bosell,
- 1:49Speaker 1: the construction contractor from Crona, California, had an issue. He
- 1:52Speaker 1: had a Furbie doll not only bite him. I think
- 1:55Speaker 1: it cursed him out and swore at him and told
- 1:57Speaker 1: him to go straight to the devil of the really
- 2:00Speaker 1: choice words. It scared him, It freaked him out. He
- 2:03Speaker 1: threatened a lawsuit. Here it is Steve Bozil from December
- 2:06Speaker 1: of ninety nine. Every year it seems there is a
- 2:09Speaker 1: problem with a toy. I've heard of lawsuits. Do you
- 2:12Speaker 1: remember that cabbage patch doll that what was the one
- 2:15Speaker 1: that had the chomping teeth and got hooked on a
- 2:17Speaker 1: little girl's hair? You remember that there's lawsuits about toys
- 2:23Speaker 1: that are too small and children swallow them. This always
- 2:26Speaker 1: seems to be a lawsuit. I didn't buy that one.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I didn't think it was real. And in point of fact,
- 2:30Speaker 1: it was the one about the cabbage patch doll that
- 2:33Speaker 1: chewed up this little girl's hair. So there's always a
- 2:36Speaker 1: problem with a toy. And either, in my opinion, we
- 2:40Speaker 1: get rid of toys all together, you know, or we
- 2:44Speaker 1: lighten up a little bit.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Or maybe there is some legitimacy there. I don't know.
- 2:49Speaker 1: We're going to talk with a man by the name
- 2:51Speaker 1: of He wants us to use his first name only Steve.
- 2:55Speaker 1: We do have the news story here, though he is
- 2:57Speaker 1: in Corona, California. And this toy that you're having a
- 3:01Speaker 1: problem with, Steve, is the Ferbie doll.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Right, Well, sir, I do have a problem with a doll.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I don't have a problem with toys.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And well, isn't it true, though, dud You know what
- 3:13Speaker 1: I'm saying that people are always suing because of a toy.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I don't have any knowledge of people suing because of
- 3:17Speaker 3: a toy. I know that there is a problem in
- 3:20Speaker 3: our home because of a product that is manufactured by
- 3:25Speaker 3: Tiger Electronics called a Ferbie doll that we gave very
- 3:30Speaker 3: early on to our youngest daughter, Ashley. And whether or
- 3:36Speaker 3: not these are furthest lawsuits, I don't want to comment.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I only know that I have a particular problem. My
- 3:42Speaker 3: family has a particular problem with this doll.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but I guess I was just commenting on the lawsuits. Now,
- 3:47Speaker 1: this Ferbie doll, I'm familiar with Ferbie dolls. You are,
- 3:50Speaker 1: could you tell us what it is for those who
- 3:52Speaker 1: don't know it's a doll, that it's a doll that
- 3:54Speaker 1: makes a lot of noises, right, and and can learn
- 3:57Speaker 1: a language.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Well, and I'm not too figuring with all myself, I
- 4:00Speaker 3: know that it can learn. It speaks a language called furbish.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Its makes noises when it's hungry. It can go to sleep.
- 4:07Speaker 3: It's it's fairly laugha like it. It looks a little
- 4:10Speaker 3: bit like a gremlin doll, and it will begin to
- 4:14Speaker 3: speak certain phrases if you teach it. To teach it
- 4:16Speaker 3: certain phrases. It makes all kinds of sounds, its eyes
- 4:19Speaker 3: open and close, its ears wibble up and down, and
- 4:22Speaker 3: it does a lot of very cute things. And that
- 4:24Speaker 3: is I guess, the attractions a doll, So I tried,
- 4:29Speaker 3: you know, to Actually one of the problems that I
- 4:32Speaker 3: have with it is that it is difficult to shut off,
- 4:35Speaker 3: because that's one of the attractions for the ferby doll.
- 4:37Speaker 3: It goes to sleep, it wakes up, it makes these
- 4:40Speaker 3: cooing sounds and so on, and you.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Can't you can't put it back to sleep right away,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and you can't get it to shut up without like
- 4:46Speaker 1: putting it to sleep.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So, in other words, there's no turning it off, right.
- 4:49Speaker 3: The big problem I have with there is no turning
- 4:51Speaker 3: the thing off. There's no switch on it that turns
- 4:53Speaker 3: it off. You have to put it to sleep. It
- 4:55Speaker 3: is very spontaneous Ferby doll acts by sound. I think
- 5:00Speaker 3: it's triggered by by audio by noises, so it has
- 5:03Speaker 3: it has some audio sensor so that it's triggered by noise.
- 5:07Speaker 3: And we had had a problem in our home because
- 5:13Speaker 3: a toy is a toy, and I understand that. But
- 5:16Speaker 3: when a toy begins to interfere with the normal functioning
- 5:21Speaker 3: of a home, it is no longer a toy. It
- 5:22Speaker 3: crosses over to an area where a toy can disturb
- 5:26Speaker 3: and disrupt the safety of a home. Then I no
- 5:29Speaker 3: longer think as a toy my attorney. My attorney agrees
- 5:31Speaker 3: with me.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So you're the Ferbie doll that you have has interfered
- 5:35Speaker 1: with the safety of your home.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I think we have a Ferbiy at our house. I
- 5:37Speaker 2: don't know. I haven't heard it in a long time.
- 5:39Speaker 1: For all I know, the kids, you know, the kids
- 5:41Speaker 1: went out and destroyed it or ran it over with
- 5:43Speaker 1: their bikes or something.
- 5:44Speaker 2: But the Ferbie doll that you have, And as I understand.
- 5:47Speaker 1: The story, there was a death in your family and
- 5:52Speaker 1: you were returning from a prayer.
- 5:54Speaker 3: We were returning from a from a dinner that we
- 5:57Speaker 3: had following the funeral from my mother.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And how does the Ferby doll figure into this.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Well, we had purchased this for my daughter, who is
- 6:08Speaker 3: four years old, and she got a Ferbie doll that
- 6:12Speaker 3: we gave her early because her birthday falls in the
- 6:15Speaker 3: month of December, and rather than give her her birthday
- 6:19Speaker 3: and her Christmas present on a twenty fifth of December,
- 6:21Speaker 3: we do like to keep those two holidays separate. I
- 6:23Speaker 3: don't know if you have anybody in your family like that,
- 6:25Speaker 3: but well.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I'm familiar with people getting in a lot of people
- 6:28Speaker 2: have December birthdays. Yes or go ahead.
- 6:30Speaker 3: We had purchased this doll, and the doll was in
- 6:36Speaker 3: our car and had been making these noises. Now keep
- 6:41Speaker 3: in mind that I was driving home with the two
- 6:44Speaker 3: very dear friends of mine, Array and Sharon Downey, there
- 6:48Speaker 3: are next door neighbors, and we were coming back from
- 6:52Speaker 3: a dinner that we had followed my mother's funeral. I
- 6:54Speaker 3: had just lost my mother last month and it was
- 7:00Speaker 3: very traumatic for me at this time. The Ferby doll
- 7:05Speaker 3: started talking in the middle of my conversation with two
- 7:09Speaker 3: very dear friends of mine in a very very sensitive
- 7:13Speaker 3: time in my life. We were very bereeved. And now
- 7:18Speaker 3: the Ferby doll that we had purchased. Yes, sir, but
- 7:21Speaker 3: the Ferby doll that was in the car, because my
- 7:24Speaker 3: daughter's car seat is in the car, and that's where
- 7:26Speaker 3: my daughter ordinarily sits. Now, the Ferby starts talking in
- 7:30Speaker 3: the middle of me talking to my friends about my
- 7:33Speaker 3: mother dying, and so I was trying to get it
- 7:35Speaker 3: to shut up. I came to find at that time
- 7:37Speaker 3: that I didn't have a screwdriver. There was some off
- 7:43Speaker 3: color language that it used. Now, one of the reasons
- 7:45Speaker 3: why it began to use off color language is apparently
- 7:48Speaker 3: one of the kids had taught it to say the
- 7:50Speaker 3: phrase go to hell.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And well, now the Ferby doll speaks furbish, Is that correct?
- 7:58Speaker 3: That is correct?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yes, whatever. That is a little toy language.
- 8:01Speaker 1: If you speak to it enough times, you can teach
- 8:03Speaker 1: it to say certain phrases.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Are you saying that one of your kids.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Most probably one of my older kids taught at the
- 8:09Speaker 3: phrase yeah.
- 8:10Speaker 2: So now the things started telling you to go.
- 8:15Speaker 3: All right, sir, you know I don't have to do it.
- 8:17Speaker 1: No, forgive me, sir, please just allow me. I've got
- 8:19Speaker 1: to kind of absorb this is the FBI. The Ferby
- 8:22Speaker 1: doll was telling you to go to hell.
- 8:24Speaker 3: I want to remind you that I was coming home
- 8:27Speaker 3: from the funeral of my mother, who died of breast cancer, Sir,
- 8:33Speaker 3: at a very young age. She was in the early sixties. Sir.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I'm very sensitive to that. And I forgive me, okay,
- 8:41Speaker 1: please forgive me. But you're telling me that in the
- 8:43Speaker 1: middle of this discussion, and I recognize it was a
- 8:45Speaker 1: somber moment for you and your friends. The Ferbie boy,
- 8:49Speaker 1: I'm just trying to get it clear. Was the Ferby talking.
- 8:51Speaker 3: This doll was activated somehow. It has an audio sensor, yes, sir,
- 8:55Speaker 3: and okay.
- 8:55Speaker 2: So when you talked, and it wakes the Ferby up
- 8:57Speaker 2: and it starts making noise.
- 8:58Speaker 3: In the middle of this moment where I was talking
- 9:01Speaker 3: to these people about my mother who had just died.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Now the Ferby started to talk.
- 9:05Speaker 2: You could not get it to shut up.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I could not get it to shut up. I tried
- 9:09Speaker 3: to disengage the batteries from the doll, and the doll
- 9:12Speaker 3: batteries you need a screwdriver to do that, and so
- 9:16Speaker 3: I was telling it to shut up, and I was
- 9:19Speaker 3: trying to shut it up, and it started to tell
- 9:21Speaker 3: me to go to hell. And I think in a
- 9:24Speaker 3: lot of ways it's unsetting to have a toy do
- 9:27Speaker 3: something like that when you're in the middle of a
- 9:30Speaker 3: very serious and beread moment.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I understand that you're very upset. Mike told me that
- 9:34Speaker 1: you were upset. If you want to take a moment,
- 9:36Speaker 1: you can, sir what I'm getting so far as you.
- 9:38Speaker 1: The Ferbie doll was in the car when you were
- 9:40Speaker 1: talking to your friends about the death of your mother.
- 9:42Speaker 2: The Ferby started to talk or make noises.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it was triggered by the audio sensor when and
- 9:48Speaker 3: here's noises. It wakes up, all right.
- 9:49Speaker 2: So it woke up and it started to talk.
- 9:51Speaker 1: You tried to get it to shut up by taking
- 9:53Speaker 1: the batteries out, but you didn't have a screwdriver.
- 9:55Speaker 3: You cannot get the batteries out of this without a screwdriver,
- 9:58Speaker 3: you cannot. And I think the manufacturer of this know this.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I think they made it that way so that even
- 10:04Speaker 3: in a very sensitive moment like that where I'm coming
- 10:06Speaker 3: back from the funeral of my mother, I have a
- 10:08Speaker 3: Ferbie doll. I have a Ferbie doll telling me to
- 10:13Speaker 3: go to Hell, which obviously the doll is not telling
- 10:15Speaker 3: me to go to hell, but someone to talk the
- 10:16Speaker 3: thing to say that.
- 10:18Speaker 1: All right, So you're upset about the death of your mother,
- 10:20Speaker 1: the Ferbie is telling you to go to hell, and
- 10:22Speaker 1: you're trying to get the batteries.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Out of that. Is that correct?
- 10:25Speaker 3: That is correct? Yes?
- 10:26Speaker 2: May I venture a.
- 10:27Speaker 1: This is why I started my hour by saying, people
- 10:30Speaker 1: seem lately we see a lot of lawsuits against toy manufacturers,
- 10:35Speaker 1: and I'm just wondering what it is you hope to
- 10:37Speaker 1: gain from this.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Well, I think that anyone who has lost a loved
- 10:40Speaker 3: one and anyone who has lost a woman in their
- 10:45Speaker 3: family to the terrible ravages of breast cancer.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Sirah, believe me, I understand.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Well, allow me to finish, please, yes, sir And in
- 10:53Speaker 3: the middle of coming home from a terrible event like
- 10:57Speaker 3: a funeral and having a Ferbie doll talking to me,
- 11:02Speaker 3: it won't shut up, tells me to go to Hell
- 11:06Speaker 3: and all the other nonsense. It was very unsettling for me.
- 11:12Speaker 3: And I think that it's unsettling to have a doll
- 11:16Speaker 3: using off color language and Ferby is telling me to
- 11:21Speaker 3: go to hell. And that is what I discussed with
- 11:24Speaker 3: my attorney.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Are you pondering some legal action.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I am reviewing what we can do.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Yes, sir, what are you claiming?
- 11:31Speaker 3: Emotional damage? Emotional distress? And I think also that the
- 11:36Speaker 3: doll is I think it's something that's not for a child,
- 11:39Speaker 3: certainly the age of my daughter, who's a four year
- 11:41Speaker 3: old child.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I Steve hold the line, Yes, sir, you heard his story.
- 11:47Speaker 1: In the middle of driving home from his mother's funeral,
- 11:50Speaker 1: the Ferbie doll was activated, which is his daughter has
- 11:52Speaker 1: the doll in the car. He couldn't get it to
- 11:54Speaker 1: shut up. Apparently the kids taught it to say the
- 11:56Speaker 1: phrase go to Hell. So he's driving home from his
- 11:59Speaker 1: mother's funeral. He's got a Ferbie doll telling him to
- 12:02Speaker 1: go to hell while he's trying to take the batteries
- 12:05Speaker 1: out of it. And he didn't have a screwdriver. Have
- 12:07Speaker 1: you ever tried to because my kids have got one
- 12:09Speaker 1: of those, and it's tough to shut it off. There's
- 12:12Speaker 1: no doubt about it. He is pondering legal action, and
- 12:17Speaker 1: I don't know whether you agree with me when I
- 12:18Speaker 1: say we've had a lot of lawsuits lately about toys.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I think, like so many other lawsuits, we're going to
- 12:25Speaker 1: see a downward curve on these things and eventually, hopefully.
- 12:28Speaker 2: It'll go away. But you know, buyer beware.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what else to say, but
- 12:32Speaker 1: there used to be a thing called buyer beware. Phil
- 12:37Speaker 1: Henry Show. So these Ferbie dolls, you know, every year
- 12:43Speaker 1: there's a hit new doll. We've either it's a Tickle
- 12:46Speaker 1: Me Elmo or there's a Beanie Baby or something, and
- 12:48Speaker 1: the Ferbie doll is the doll of the moment. We
- 12:52Speaker 1: have at least one potential lawsuit now involving a Ferbie
- 12:55Speaker 1: doll from Corona.
- 12:57Speaker 2: We have a a.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Listener on the line named Steve. His daughter Ashley, had
- 13:00Speaker 1: a Ferby doll. The doll was in the car. Apparently
- 13:05Speaker 1: it was asleep. I don't know if you know anything
- 13:06Speaker 1: about Ferby dolls, but they fall asleep, don't they, sir?
- 13:09Speaker 3: The manufacturer, I guess, the manufacturer, so that they can
- 13:12Speaker 3: simulate sleep and the you know, they wake up and
- 13:15Speaker 3: they want to be fed and then and this sort
- 13:17Speaker 3: of thing that the doll simulates a or simulate somehow
- 13:23Speaker 3: living or sentient being. And that's fine, that's fine, But
- 13:29Speaker 3: when a doll crosses over in an area where a
- 13:33Speaker 3: toy can make fun of the head of a household,
- 13:37Speaker 3: especially when I'm at a weak moment like that. Well,
- 13:41Speaker 3: I'm having a conversation with my relatives about the death.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Of my mother, and I want you to know something,
- 13:48Speaker 2: so I'm very sensitive of that.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Okay, I appreciate that. And then the Ferby butts in.
- 13:52Speaker 3: It makes me look foolish, because a lot of this
- 13:55Speaker 3: has to do with me, this thing making me look
- 13:57Speaker 3: like a fool in front of my friends, in front
- 14:00Speaker 3: of my wife, at a moment that was extremely sensitive
- 14:04Speaker 3: to me.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Well, when you say the Furby butted in what you're saying, it.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Was activated obviously by the conversation.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Okay, hoowway. On the Phil Henry Show, Hello, Hello, yes.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Hi, Yeah, yeah, I had a question. I too, am
- 14:20Speaker 4: very sensitive to his mother, Diane. I'm very sorry for that.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Thank you. But I just heard the cop.
- 14:26Speaker 4: But I mean, I gotta tell you I heard the coming.
- 14:27Speaker 4: He says, the doll's making fun of the head of
- 14:30Speaker 4: the household.
- 14:31Speaker 3: I almost feel like.
- 14:32Speaker 4: You should be concerned that. Isn't it your son or
- 14:34Speaker 4: your daughter who's making fun of the head of the
- 14:35Speaker 4: household by teaching your doll to say.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Go to hell.
- 14:38Speaker 2: That's exactly right.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I don't think when you when you give someone like
- 14:41Speaker 3: that to a child, they're obviously going to do things.
- 14:43Speaker 3: My son, my eldest boy, is ten years old, so
- 14:46Speaker 3: he obviously is going to get into some trouble. I
- 14:49Speaker 3: agree with you, But what I does the manufacture of
- 14:52Speaker 3: a toy have to make it easy for me to
- 14:55Speaker 3: be humiliated? Okay, yeah, there's enough trouble going on between
- 14:59Speaker 3: parents and son. Why do they have to have this
- 15:01Speaker 3: Ferby come into my life? And the Ferby makes it
- 15:05Speaker 3: easy for my son to humiliate me? See what I'm saying.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I understand what you're saying in them, it's hard
- 15:12Speaker 4: for me. I don't want to argue to devay with
- 15:14Speaker 4: you too much because I know you're sensitive to your
- 15:16Speaker 4: mother dying. But I just think that you can spend
- 15:19Speaker 4: your energy better than going after a doll maker.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 15:25Speaker 4: I buy my son a bike knowing that he can
- 15:29Speaker 4: go in the street and get hit by a car,
- 15:31Speaker 4: and I certainly won't blame the bike maker.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Well, I don't mat and there are right and wrong
- 15:35Speaker 3: ways to use any product, But when you're driving home
- 15:38Speaker 3: from a very devastating event, and all of a sudden,
- 15:40Speaker 3: this Ferby doll wakes up and starts. It starts buttoning
- 15:44Speaker 3: in on my conversation. See, I was having a conversation
- 15:46Speaker 3: with my next door neighbors, and I was speaking to
- 15:49Speaker 3: my wife, and now this thing butts in tells me
- 15:53Speaker 3: to go to hell and keeps and I keep screaming
- 15:57Speaker 3: at it. Yes, I look like a fool. I'm trying
- 15:59Speaker 3: to get the batteries out of screaming at it to
- 16:00Speaker 3: shut up. Right.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Well, I know that's an emotional moment. Were you yelling emotionally?
- 16:06Speaker 3: Right, I know it's like the act emotionally.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I wish you the best.
- 16:09Speaker 3: I just you know, I were you.
- 16:11Speaker 2: You were screaming at the Ferby doll.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I was telling you to shut up? Anybody would?
- 16:17Speaker 4: I mean, I almost feel like and in years to come,
- 16:20Speaker 4: you're gonna look back that and laugh on Not a.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Big thing, Yeah, not in the overall scheme of things.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Not a big thing.
- 16:25Speaker 3: But I'm telling you, the thing was making a mockery
- 16:27Speaker 3: of my mother, right and at the head of the household.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Okay, well, all right, keep in mind you should talk
- 16:34Speaker 4: to your kids not to teach us all that.
- 16:36Speaker 3: They go to hell.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Right, Thank you for your call, sir. Here is a
- 16:39Speaker 1: Lisa Viejo on the Phil Henry Show.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Hello, Hi there, Hi, Okay, I agree with the last
- 16:44Speaker 5: caller and I have a couple of comments to say,
- 16:46Speaker 5: And your gentleman caller may not like this, but first
- 16:49Speaker 5: of all, I've lost a loved one at the person
- 16:52Speaker 5: My father was at a young age too, and we
- 16:55Speaker 5: all react differently. I think you're overreacting. I think that
- 16:59Speaker 5: the derby incident and you're coming back from mother's funeral
- 17:02Speaker 5: are totally unrelated.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I think, well, then it happened now when I was
- 17:06Speaker 3: on my way back from from from her funeral, right, yeah,
- 17:09Speaker 3: but the lady is saying.
- 17:10Speaker 5: With each other, it just happened to be at that instance.
- 17:13Speaker 5: You bought the doll, yourself, your daughters, the one who
- 17:16Speaker 5: taught the doll what to say, and you're totally overreacting.
- 17:19Speaker 5: I think what you should do is get some counseling
- 17:21Speaker 5: for your so you can go through this agreement process that.
- 17:24Speaker 3: With all due respect. Now, with all with all due respect, man,
- 17:27Speaker 3: anytime we endeavor to use the judital stasion in this country,
- 17:30Speaker 3: we're told to go get canceling. You did not lose
- 17:33Speaker 3: your father to breast cancer, did you.
- 17:35Speaker 5: It doesn't matter what I lost them to. Your problem
- 17:38Speaker 5: is that you're extremely over You're emotional, and you're overreacting
- 17:42Speaker 5: to an incident that I think that most colors are
- 17:44Speaker 5: going to say. It's your father, your mother passing away
- 17:48Speaker 5: is a big deal, but the Farbie doll talking to
- 17:50Speaker 5: you in the backseat.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Is not one of the things.
- 17:52Speaker 1: One of the things. Mister Well, I don't want to
- 17:54Speaker 1: give the gentleman's last name, Steve. We are sensitive of
- 17:57Speaker 1: this country these days to frivolous lawsuits.
- 17:58Speaker 2: We've seen them happen. We've seeing large amounts being awarded.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Uh, you have your mother die and then have a
- 18:04Speaker 3: ferby doll giving you a hard time.
- 18:07Speaker 5: You know what, You're totally overreacting. I think you're very
- 18:09Speaker 5: sensitive and the issues are not related. They're not related
- 18:13Speaker 5: at all. The dog, the doll happened to be talking
- 18:16Speaker 5: and you why is.
- 18:17Speaker 3: It talking to me then? And why is it doing
- 18:19Speaker 3: what it's doing there?
- 18:19Speaker 5: You bought the doll and your daughter taught it what
- 18:21Speaker 5: to say. You blame the doll.
- 18:25Speaker 3: My daughter's four years old. I suspect that my son
- 18:27Speaker 3: did well.
- 18:28Speaker 5: You should teach your kids to be not to say
- 18:31Speaker 5: that that's the key, that's the key.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Your son got ahold of the doll, taught at all
- 18:35Speaker 1: these nasty things.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Okay, how can.
- 18:38Speaker 3: I overreact to things like breast cancer?
- 18:41Speaker 5: I want to make my point again here, they're totally separate.
- 18:44Speaker 5: If you were calling about a breathing issue or what
- 18:46Speaker 5: it's like.
- 18:47Speaker 3: To have us, that's exactly what I'm calling about.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Okay, Well, the lobster then, because it's people like you
- 18:53Speaker 5: that are causing our prices to go up as consumers,
- 18:56Speaker 5: and it's ridiculous.
- 18:58Speaker 2: He hold on cirtain till every show.
- 19:04Speaker 1: And at the beginning of the hour, I talked about
- 19:07Speaker 1: lawsuits involving toys. Last year or the year before, there
- 19:12Speaker 1: was one involving I think allegedly, and don't quote me.
- 19:15Speaker 2: I could be wrong. It's just my opinion. YadA YadA, YadA.
- 19:17Speaker 2: So I don't get sued.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Involving that cabbage patch doll. There was one that had
- 19:22Speaker 1: an automatic chomping style mouth that.
- 19:24Speaker 2: I guess got a hold of a little girl's hair.
- 19:26Speaker 1: And we've heard about toys that are too small for
- 19:29Speaker 1: a child's you know, too small for a child to
- 19:31Speaker 1: play with because they could swallow them. We've heard about
- 19:33Speaker 1: toys that children can suffocate with, et cetera. This gentleman
- 19:37Speaker 1: that we have on the line is his name is Steve.
- 19:38Speaker 1: He's in Corona, California. His daughter had a Furby doll.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Did you buy the doll for her?
- 19:44Speaker 3: My wife purchased a doll for my daughter. But yes,
- 19:47Speaker 3: I was with her when she purchased a doll.
- 19:50Speaker 1: All right, So the two of you, the parents, yes, sir,
- 19:52Speaker 1: we buy it for it. Your daughter is four, so
- 19:55Speaker 1: she's not teaching it to say go to hell. You
- 19:57Speaker 1: suspect your ten year old son.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I suspect my ten year old Senya of teaching it
- 20:01Speaker 3: these words. Now, that's one issue. But in the middle
- 20:05Speaker 3: of the bereavement that I was feeling over my mother dying,
- 20:08Speaker 3: we were on our way home from that, I'm saying
- 20:10Speaker 3: that the doll should not have said what it said.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I'm saying that the doll saying what it said means
- 20:17Speaker 3: that it was inflicting emotional distress on me. See, it
- 20:20Speaker 3: crosses over the line when a toy, as I said,
- 20:24Speaker 3: mocks the head of a household and was making fun
- 20:27Speaker 3: of me in front of my wife and in front
- 20:30Speaker 3: of my friends, and well, I was trying to get
- 20:33Speaker 3: it to shut up, and it would not shut up.
- 20:36Speaker 3: And I was trying to tell it to you because
- 20:37Speaker 3: I don't know how these things work. Fell believe me,
- 20:40Speaker 3: a Ferby doll, and you know, most of these toys
- 20:43Speaker 3: are a little bit almost high tech these days. So
- 20:46Speaker 3: I simply tried to get it to shut up. It
- 20:48Speaker 3: wouldn't shut up. I tried to get a screwdriver to
- 20:51Speaker 3: get the batteries out of it to make it shut up,
- 20:55Speaker 3: and it still wouldn't shut up. So that's why I
- 20:58Speaker 3: decided I would. In that end, then the emotional distress
- 21:01Speaker 3: was so severe.
- 21:01Speaker 1: I want to go back to that moment when when
- 21:03Speaker 1: you're screaming at the Ferby to shut up and it
- 21:05Speaker 1: won't shut up, and your mother, I excuse me, your
- 21:08Speaker 1: next door neighbor, and your wife they're doing what well.
- 21:10Speaker 3: They're looking at me with shock. They are a couple
- 21:15Speaker 3: of One of them started to laugh.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Okay now and now we're getting to who laughed?
- 21:20Speaker 3: My wife laughed?
- 21:21Speaker 2: Okay, now we're.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Getting So that is the emotional distress that we're talking about, right.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Well again, miss andrewe we're talking about is the kind
- 21:28Speaker 3: of emotional stress where you are made to look like
- 21:30Speaker 3: a fool, but a toy makes you look like a fool.
- 21:35Speaker 3: To me, that was bad and I'm probably couldn't live
- 21:37Speaker 3: through it were not for the fact that I was
- 21:38Speaker 3: coming home from my mother's that I was coming home
- 21:42Speaker 3: from my mother's funeral. Forgive me all right, sir?
- 21:45Speaker 2: Right? I got it? Are you going to be all right?
- 21:49Speaker 3: I didn't know that it was motion sensitive either, so
- 21:51Speaker 3: I started shaking it, and then that made it say
- 21:54Speaker 3: over and over, go to Hell, Go to Hell, Go
- 21:55Speaker 3: to Hell, which the other issue that I brought up
- 21:58Speaker 3: to my attorney.
- 21:59Speaker 2: It was so when you shake it, when you shake.
- 22:01Speaker 3: It, it'll tell you go to hell even more. And Matt,
- 22:04Speaker 3: my wife's thought was funny, and then my nest or
- 22:07Speaker 3: neighbors thought that was funny, and I would look very foolish.
- 22:11Speaker 1: All right, that's the Ferbey story from Steve. Let's go
- 22:14Speaker 1: back to our phone calls. So the Ferbie doll, in
- 22:16Speaker 1: a very sensitive moment coming back from the funeral of
- 22:20Speaker 1: this man's mother, started telling him to go to hell.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Here is Burno Valley on the Phil Henry Show.
- 22:25Speaker 6: Hello, Hi, seecause I really feel sad for your mother dying.
- 22:30Speaker 6: But I think what's happening is that you're personalizing something
- 22:33Speaker 6: that cannot be personal and your Ferbie doll is an
- 22:37Speaker 6: inanimate object.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Yes, I know that, ma'am, and.
- 22:39Speaker 6: It can't respect or disrespect anyone. I think what happened
- 22:43Speaker 6: is really you felt disrespect from your neighbors and your wife,
- 22:47Speaker 6: but it's not the Ferbie doll.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Are you a counselor?
- 22:52Speaker 6: Am I a counselor? Yes, ma'am at this moment.
- 22:54Speaker 3: No, Well, but I mean in your profession, no, okay,
- 22:58Speaker 3: because you sanda like you might have a handle on
- 23:01Speaker 3: what's going on with me.
- 23:03Speaker 6: Well, I have a handle because maybe I see an
- 23:05Speaker 6: awful lot of people in my host family doing it too.
- 23:08Speaker 1: But but I really really the people take inanimate objects
- 23:11Speaker 1: and project something onto it.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Right, Well, the thing was going over and over, Go
- 23:16Speaker 3: to hell, Go to hell, Go to hell. Yeah. Do
- 23:18Speaker 3: you are you familiar with these toys?
- 23:20Speaker 6: Yes?
- 23:20Speaker 3: I am.
- 23:21Speaker 6: I wish you could have stopped your car and just
- 23:22Speaker 6: put it in the trunk.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that you know. Well, my wife was laughing so
- 23:26Speaker 3: hard and I was so humiliated that I simply just
- 23:29Speaker 3: put the thing back into Uh, there's a CD case
- 23:33Speaker 3: between our two front seats.
- 23:35Speaker 6: But see, you're trying over and over and over.
- 23:37Speaker 3: I can here because I kept closing it and I
- 23:39Speaker 3: told it to shut up, and I closed the lid
- 23:41Speaker 3: on it, and my wife was sitting there, and I
- 23:44Speaker 3: thought that it was in bad taste that my wife
- 23:46Speaker 3: was laughing. But I guess I could understand.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Well, your wife's gonna laugh.
- 23:50Speaker 6: Yeah, be angry if you want to be angry with someone,
- 23:53Speaker 6: Be angry with your wife.
- 23:54Speaker 3: She's coming back from the funeral my mother, right.
- 23:56Speaker 6: I understand that.
- 23:57Speaker 3: But the Furbie humiliated me.
- 24:00Speaker 6: No, No, the ferbie did not humiliate you. You did
- 24:04Speaker 6: by the way you reacted to it out of your grief.
- 24:06Speaker 3: But the thing of it is, why didn't see they
- 24:09Speaker 3: make it so that it'll keep telling you to go
- 24:11Speaker 3: to hell?
- 24:12Speaker 6: No, no, your son taught it how to say go
- 24:14Speaker 6: to hell. They made it so it would keep saying
- 24:17Speaker 6: things it happened to say go to hell at a
- 24:21Speaker 6: very very tough time for you. But you can't blame
- 24:26Speaker 6: the toy company. The toy company or even the toy
- 24:29Speaker 6: didn't know you were coming home from a funeral. My
- 24:33Speaker 6: suggestion to you is drop the lawsuit.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Oh I haven't I haven't done it. I have not
- 24:38Speaker 3: taken any initials that legally. I've just consoled my attorney
- 24:41Speaker 3: on it.
- 24:42Speaker 6: Okay, but drop the idea of the lawsuit and deal
- 24:45Speaker 6: with the anger.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Did come with us, The toy did come with us
- 24:49Speaker 3: in the car to the funeral.
- 24:50Speaker 6: Though then maybe you should have left the toy at home.
- 24:53Speaker 3: But I didn't know the other words of the toy
- 24:55Speaker 3: was in the car.
- 24:57Speaker 2: You know what, it's your daughter's toy.
- 24:59Speaker 1: You said, your daughter's car seats in the car, right,
- 25:01Speaker 1: so there's a good chance some of her favorite toys
- 25:05Speaker 1: could be in the car.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Well, then I don't know. That's another thing I have
- 25:08Speaker 3: to talk to my wife about. Well, that's when i'm
- 25:11Speaker 3: you know, my mother died and I'm trying to tell
- 25:13Speaker 3: this thing to shut up, and my wife's laughing at me.
- 25:16Speaker 3: And then she later made the comment to me that
- 25:17Speaker 3: looks like that Ferbie got the best of you. And
- 25:20Speaker 3: if I wouldn't take that crap from a doll and
- 25:22Speaker 3: all of that stuff, Steve, Wait a minute.
- 25:23Speaker 2: So she's mocking you, Steve, it's what she was doing.
- 25:26Speaker 6: Yes, And the Ferbie could not hear you. The Ferby
- 25:29Speaker 6: could not hear you.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Maam, I understand that. I understand that.
- 25:33Speaker 6: Then why are you angry at the toy company instead
- 25:36Speaker 6: of your wife?
- 25:37Speaker 1: You're having a hard time getting mad at your wife.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Pal that you don't mind me saying. And maybe it's
- 25:42Speaker 1: not the first time.
- 25:43Speaker 6: Yeah, and that's the you know, I love my wife
- 25:45Speaker 6: very much.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I know you love your wife, Steve.
- 25:48Speaker 6: It's okay to love your wife and still be angry
- 25:51Speaker 6: at something she does. Because you're angry at something she
- 25:54Speaker 6: does does not mean what is my wife?
- 25:57Speaker 3: Why does my wife have to take the off the ferbiebi?
- 26:03Speaker 6: The Ferbie is inanimate, and your wife laughed at you.
- 26:06Speaker 3: You are told me to go to hell?
- 26:08Speaker 6: Okay, Ferbie did not tell you to go to hell.
- 26:11Speaker 6: The Ferbie's mechanism, the mechanism.
- 26:14Speaker 1: The son you're fooling around with it made it tell
- 26:16Speaker 1: you to go to hell?
- 26:17Speaker 2: And your wife? Can you have you gotten into a
- 26:19Speaker 2: fight with your wife?
- 26:20Speaker 3: I love my wife very much, sir. We have a
- 26:22Speaker 3: very good marriage. I know.
- 26:24Speaker 6: Can you be angry and still love her?
- 26:29Speaker 3: I don't think that's love.
- 26:31Speaker 6: Anger is not. Anger is an emotion, just like sadness
- 26:35Speaker 6: is an emotion.
- 26:36Speaker 2: You can get mad at your wife and still love her.
- 26:38Speaker 6: Absolutely, Do you ever get mad at Were you angry
- 26:41Speaker 6: at your ten year old son for teaching the stupid
- 26:44Speaker 6: doll to say go to Hell?
- 26:46Speaker 3: Well, it's a toy, and I think children play with toys. Okay,
- 26:49Speaker 3: How can I be mad at a child for playing
- 26:50Speaker 3: with a toy?
- 26:51Speaker 6: Okay, let me read.
- 26:51Speaker 2: You can't get mad at anybody, So you're getting mad
- 26:53Speaker 2: at a doll.
- 26:54Speaker 6: Let me let me rephrase it. Were you upset with
- 26:57Speaker 6: your son for even saying go to hell? Teaching anybody
- 27:00Speaker 6: maybe his four year old.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Sisters it's not I guess it's not appropriate, but he's
- 27:04Speaker 3: a ten year old boy. He's going to do things
- 27:06Speaker 3: like that.
- 27:06Speaker 6: You know what. You can't get angry, can you.
- 27:10Speaker 3: I'm very, very angry at the dog got a Ferbie
- 27:13Speaker 3: doll for telling me to go to hell? Yes, ma'am.
- 27:14Speaker 3: And it's in the middle of Mustard. My mother died.
- 27:17Speaker 6: The Ferbie doll didn't know it.
- 27:20Speaker 1: The ferbiy doll is not telling you to go to hell.
- 27:22Speaker 1: The Ferbie doll didn't get up and say, ah, here's Steve.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I think I'll tell it to go.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Mister Henry. You don't have to talk to me like
- 27:28Speaker 3: I'm a dumb child.
- 27:30Speaker 2: No, sir, I'm not.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I'm just forgive me, but it's you are aware the
- 27:33Speaker 1: Ferby's got nothing personally against you.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Correct, the Ferbie was at the funeral. It knew that
- 27:39Speaker 3: my mother had died. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 27:42Speaker 6: Did the Ferby really know your mother died?
- 27:45Speaker 3: No, ma'am, of course it did not, but it was
- 27:47Speaker 3: at the funeral. Was in the car.
- 27:49Speaker 6: Didn't know it was at the funeral. I'm sorry, did
- 27:53Speaker 6: the Ferbie know he was at the funeral?
- 27:57Speaker 3: Obviously? It's a doll, the.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Ferbie even though he was in the car with you.
- 28:05Speaker 2: You see, you see see what the ladies getting next, Steve?
- 28:08Speaker 3: Oh, I know these are very very these are These
- 28:13Speaker 3: are smart toys, and the and the manufacturers make them
- 28:16Speaker 3: in such a way so as to simulate sendient life
- 28:20Speaker 3: or intelligent life.
- 28:21Speaker 6: Okay, but it's not intelligent, Steve. It has no feelings,
- 28:25Speaker 6: it has no emotions. It did not on purpose set
- 28:29Speaker 6: out to humiliate you.
- 28:30Speaker 3: You know, I know the doll doesn't have anything against
- 28:32Speaker 3: me personally. I know that. I know that. I think
- 28:35Speaker 3: it's made though to piss piss me off, okay, and
- 28:39Speaker 3: it can it can be, you know, made to bes
- 28:41Speaker 3: to piss me off.
- 28:42Speaker 1: All right, Well then now you're talking about like a
- 28:44Speaker 1: guy who you know, I'm interrupting the lady.
- 28:46Speaker 2: You're doing better than me, Man, go.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Ahead, Do you understand what I'm sam stand Steve?
- 28:51Speaker 6: Let me ask you something, tell you something.
- 28:53Speaker 3: In other words, I think, I think who made the doll?
- 28:55Speaker 3: They want to piss me off? No, they want me.
- 28:58Speaker 6: They don't know you either. But you have three people
- 29:01Speaker 6: who have humiliated you, you believe right now, three people
- 29:04Speaker 6: your to, your neighbors, and your wife's.
- 29:06Speaker 3: If you were laughing at okay, me because the Ferby
- 29:10Speaker 3: made me look like a fool.
- 29:12Speaker 6: You made yourself look by like a fool because of
- 29:14Speaker 6: how you acted to the Ferby. But let me finish
- 29:16Speaker 6: this sentence. Okay, you were trying to tell tell the
- 29:20Speaker 6: person to listen to you, So I'd like you to
- 29:22Speaker 6: listen to me.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Okay, just ma'am.
- 29:23Speaker 6: I really feel your grief, and I understand how humiliating
- 29:28Speaker 6: that must have been. But I will guarantee you if
- 29:31Speaker 6: you go into a court with this, you will come
- 29:34Speaker 6: away feeling much much more humiliated than you did in
- 29:38Speaker 6: the car.
- 29:38Speaker 2: People are gonna laugh at you, Steve.
- 29:40Speaker 3: If you take that will I had to get the
- 29:42Speaker 3: Ferbie to shut up, and it just wouldn't shut up.
- 29:44Speaker 3: It would not shut up, would not respect my feelings,
- 29:49Speaker 3: and it wouldn't shut up.
- 29:50Speaker 6: It cannot respect your feeling Steve. There's no way an
- 29:54Speaker 6: inanimate doll made by some stranger in a toy company
- 29:59Speaker 6: could possibly know how to respect you, because number one,
- 30:03Speaker 6: you have to be taught.
- 30:04Speaker 3: How to respect well in Japan.
- 30:08Speaker 6: I don't care if they were made in on Mars.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Did you see that small soldier deal that they had
- 30:14Speaker 3: on TV.
- 30:16Speaker 6: You're you're going off at a red herring here, Steve, because
- 30:19Speaker 6: the point the point is, Steve, respect has to be taught.
- 30:24Speaker 6: The Burbie doll was not taught respect and cannot be
- 30:27Speaker 6: taught respect. It can only be taught to mimic down.
- 30:32Speaker 3: I'll tell you one thing seems to me. I remember
- 30:35Speaker 3: a little story not too long ago. You may all
- 30:38Speaker 3: know what I'm talking about. A little guy by the
- 30:40Speaker 3: name of Pinocchio. Okay, he was a doll, but then
- 30:44Speaker 3: he can come to life too.
- 30:46Speaker 6: So only only because walk, only because Walt Disney made
- 30:49Speaker 6: him come to life.
- 30:50Speaker 3: He is not never say never, never say never.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Look wait a second, pal, what do you mean, never
- 30:56Speaker 2: say never.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Never say never.
- 30:58Speaker 1: That was a cartoon that was created by Walt Disney
- 31:02Speaker 1: of Pinocchio, who is a doll that came to life.
- 31:05Speaker 3: He had feelings.
- 31:06Speaker 6: He lied only because Walt Disney gave him feeling.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Right. Hold, I'm gonna put the gentleman.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Would you talk to him for a minute, Mike Steve,
- 31:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna put you on with Mike for just a second.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Okay, I think the guy's nuts.
- 31:19Speaker 6: He is he really needs and I am a.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Therapist, you know I could tell. So what is this?
- 31:26Speaker 1: What is this phenomenon where you can't get angry at people?
- 31:29Speaker 1: You can only put it onto an inanimate object, or
- 31:31Speaker 1: you can only put it onto what is that?
- 31:33Speaker 2: Is that?
- 31:33Speaker 6: That's going way back to his childhood. He was taught
- 31:37Speaker 6: not to that. He was probably never allowed to be
- 31:39Speaker 6: angry himself. And the only anger he saw was I
- 31:42Speaker 6: would I would have this is a real off the
- 31:45Speaker 6: wall thing, But I would imagine the only anger he
- 31:47Speaker 6: ever saw was from a drunken father.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Why why a drunken father?
- 31:52Speaker 6: That's just I don't know. That's just a feeling I'm
- 31:54Speaker 6: getting from him that I would imagine that he came
- 31:57Speaker 6: from a very extremely dysfunctional family who probably has thought
- 32:01Speaker 6: it was an alcoholic and had rages of anger, and
- 32:05Speaker 6: so he's very afraid of anger.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Oh so he doesn't want to be his father or
- 32:08Speaker 1: respond to the women in his life like his mother
- 32:11Speaker 1: or his or his wife the same way his father
- 32:13Speaker 1: did exactly.
- 32:15Speaker 6: That's just you know, not knowing the man at all.
- 32:16Speaker 6: That's just my gut feeling.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Thank you very much, Okay, I'll let you go. Thanks
- 32:20Speaker 2: a lot. About Phil Henry Show.
