Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the Super Rugby Final, Boy, it's going to be
- 0:03Speaker 1: so good at Blockbuster Hurricanes hosting Chiefs and I sold
- 0:06Speaker 1: out caketin sold out in fifteen minutes. The Chiefs chasing
- 0:09Speaker 1: their first title in thirteen years after falling short in
- 0:12Speaker 1: the last three Grand finals. But the Hurricanes are very
- 0:15Speaker 1: hungry to lift the trophy again they won last ten
- 0:18Speaker 1: years ago. Tony philp Is, the interim Hurricane CEO, enjoys
- 0:21Speaker 1: it now. Congratulations, you've got a hell of a match
- 0:23Speaker 1: on your hands, Tony, Oh.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Good morning, Andrew. Absolutely, we're super excited about tomorrow night.
- 0:29Speaker 1: This sold out Caketon. Does it show that rugby's act
- 0:32Speaker 1: big time, particularly in the capitol?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Oh? Well absolutely, And you know it's a real good
- 0:37Speaker 2: reflection of you know, our city has got them behind
- 0:40Speaker 2: the team and go behind the club and you know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: and also I think it's an opportunity for us to
- 0:44Speaker 2: come together as a community and then bring bitter joy
- 0:47Speaker 2: back to our city again.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Okay, now you are the interim CEO. And of course
- 0:51Speaker 1: there's a lot of debate around the place about the
- 0:53Speaker 1: future of Super Rugby. Is the competition back where it
- 0:55Speaker 1: needs to be because we've seen some pretty full houses
- 0:58Speaker 1: over the last few weeks, or there's still a lot
- 1:00Speaker 1: of work to go to get it back to full health.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I think what we've seen this year is that the
- 1:06Speaker 2: Super Rugby competition is certainly fun of mine for fans
- 1:10Speaker 2: in New Zealand, and it's been really good. You know,
- 1:12Speaker 2: we saw that down in christ Jucture and obviously we've
- 1:14Speaker 2: seen it this year with a home final that fought
- 1:16Speaker 2: up in fifteen minutes. And you know, we're excited about
- 1:19Speaker 2: this year and we're looking forward to what potentially might
- 1:21Speaker 2: come the future.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Can I just say that what I see as a trend,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and I compare this to the Warriors and orkandf C,
- 1:28Speaker 1: is that winners are grinners, and that rugby fans turn
- 1:31Speaker 1: up if you're winning, but they don't turn up when
- 1:33Speaker 1: you're losing, and that's not being faithful to the club.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I think from our point of view,
- 1:40Speaker 2: we know that winning has helped our fans come back
- 1:42Speaker 2: and connect again, and now it's our challenges to make
- 1:45Speaker 2: them loyal to us as we move forward no matter what.
- 1:48Speaker 2: And you know, we've got some ideas and thoughts in
- 1:50Speaker 2: that space around how we can really engage our fans
- 1:52Speaker 2: both on and off the field, and we've seen that
- 1:54Speaker 2: with our match enhancement and we've seen that with a
- 1:57Speaker 2: city this week with brief transportation and what we do
- 2:01Speaker 2: beforehand and also after the game. So we know it's
- 2:04Speaker 2: at the moment it's part of the event as rugby
- 2:06Speaker 2: side of it, but it's not the only part of
- 2:07Speaker 2: the event, and we've got to get better at that.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Absolutely, you also need a roof. Then again also you
- 2:11Speaker 1: need water, papes and other things. That's Clark laidlaw. I mean,
- 2:17Speaker 1: when he was coach of the sevens, I thought and
- 2:18Speaker 1: then ended up with the Huggins, I thought, hello, sevens
- 2:20Speaker 1: to fifteen, seven to fifteens. He's done a fantastic job.
- 2:25Speaker 2: He's done amazing job. So it's my background too, So
- 2:27Speaker 2: we both transitioned from you know, a seven's environment, and
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, we both really looked at how we could
- 2:33Speaker 2: take the culture and the environty and the environment we
- 2:36Speaker 2: wanted to create to enhance the performance in the fifteen side.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And you know, we're really proud at what that looks like.
- 2:42Speaker 2: And Clark has been instrumental in making that happen.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Chiefs have lost three Grand finals in a Row, So
- 2:47Speaker 1: they're going to be very very hungry and very very desperate.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Are you hungry enough to give them a fourth?
- 2:54Speaker 2: Absolutely? Yeah, Well, our last final was ten years ago
- 2:57Speaker 2: and we've only won one title, so we've got no illusion.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The Chiefs are going to come down here and play
- 3:02Speaker 2: what's going to be an ex game the two best teams,
- 3:05Speaker 2: and we're super excited about taking that challenge on and
- 3:09Speaker 2: doing in front of our home crowd that's going to
- 3:11Speaker 2: be loud and boisterous and make sure that we stay
- 3:15Speaker 2: here the game.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I'm going to be in the caramandle in front of
- 3:17Speaker 1: a very big TV with a nice night bottle of
- 3:20Speaker 1: Pinot Noir and I'm so looking forward to it. And
- 3:22Speaker 1: I used to them Wellington, So go the Canes and
- 3:24Speaker 1: all the very best and thanks for joining us, Tony.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Thanks Andrew, we really appreciate it. For more from Early
