- 0:00Speaker 1: Texas, Texas A and M week. It's underway Haggie's and
- 0:04Speaker 1: Longhorns this week. It'll be Friday, and we'll have it
- 0:09Speaker 1: for you on the Zone with our Longhorns game day
- 0:15Speaker 1: coverage beginning at.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Three thirty words.
- 0:17Speaker 3: That you guys are going to be again Thomson Hotel. Yeah,
- 0:20Speaker 3: the Thompson Hotel downtown Cool. Its going to be a
- 0:22Speaker 3: fantastic spot. So that's a neat place if you're going
- 0:26Speaker 3: down the college station and not spending over one thousand
- 0:29Speaker 3: dollars on a ticket. You want to save somebody came
- 0:31Speaker 3: out to Thompson Hotel. We'll have our pregame spot there
- 0:35Speaker 3: and then we're going to hang there and watch the game.
- 0:37Speaker 3: I believe there's a nice rooftop bar and big screen TV,
- 0:42Speaker 3: some excellent food. So we are looking forward to it. Yeah,
- 0:45Speaker 3: classy way of the close out, a very classy season
- 0:48Speaker 3: to the Longhorns.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, and we'll see where the season leads beyond Saturday,
- 0:56Speaker 1: hopefully to Atlanta the next stop. But winning would send
- 1:02Speaker 1: them there, Losing would not send them to Atlanta. Might
- 1:06Speaker 1: still get in the playoff, but you but the control
- 1:08Speaker 1: is out of your own destiny and That's one thing
- 1:10Speaker 1: we talked about is these teams who lost control of
- 1:16Speaker 1: their destiny by losing of the weekend.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Alabama did not have one hundred percent control of its
- 1:24Speaker 1: own destiny, but had the Crimson Tide one out, there
- 1:30Speaker 1: was a real chance that they could be in position
- 1:35Speaker 1: to control their own destiny with a win in the
- 1:37Speaker 1: Iron Bowl over Auburn this week to play Texas or Texas,
- 1:42Speaker 1: A and M, perhaps in the SEC Championship that went away.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Ole Miss had an outside chance to land in the
- 1:50Speaker 1: SEC Championship that's gone. Tennessee had an outside chance to
- 1:54Speaker 1: land in the SEC Championship game that's gone. Not because
- 1:57Speaker 1: of anything they did on the field. They beat UMass,
- 2:00Speaker 1: It wasn't that. It was because of both A and
- 2:02Speaker 1: M and Alabama losing. They needed Alabama when they needed
- 2:06Speaker 1: to be in a tie break with Alabama as well
- 2:09Speaker 1: as you know, because they'd led the loss to Georgia,
- 2:11Speaker 1: but they had the win of Obama, who had the
- 2:13Speaker 1: win of a Georgia who had the win over Tennessee.
- 2:15Speaker 2: You get where I'm going with that.
- 2:17Speaker 1: So now it's pretty clear what's going to happen in
- 2:22Speaker 1: the SEC. The winter in College Station Saturday Night will
- 2:27Speaker 1: play the Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta the following Saturday afternoon
- 2:30Speaker 1: at three. If Texas A and M loses at four losses,
- 2:35Speaker 1: they're definitely out of any playoff consideration. Texas loss, while
- 2:40Speaker 1: not eliminating Texas from playoff consideration, certainly removes the control
- 2:45Speaker 1: from their own destiny. And then they're looking at other
- 2:47Speaker 1: things going on across the country, you know, like a
- 2:50Speaker 1: red hot Notre Dame and then SMU on the uptick.
- 2:56Speaker 1: There's even some folks go this far and they're thinking
- 2:59Speaker 1: about this because they start projecting ahead. And we've had
- 3:01Speaker 1: this conversation before that if the Longhorns, let's say they
- 3:07Speaker 1: win the SEC, say they do that, or even if
- 3:12Speaker 1: they get into the playoff but not win the SEC,
- 3:15Speaker 1: said they defeat Texas A and M to get into
- 3:18Speaker 1: the SEC Championship but lose to Georgia, they're probably at
- 3:22Speaker 1: that point. I think if beating A and M almost
- 3:24Speaker 1: locks them into the playoffs. So let's just say they
- 3:26Speaker 1: get in and they're in the seven to ten matchup
- 3:30Speaker 1: or whatever it is.
- 3:31Speaker 2: There's or you know, eight nine or six and eleven
- 3:35Speaker 2: or whatever it is.
- 3:37Speaker 1: There's speculation that I've seen and not just speculation. I've
- 3:41Speaker 1: seen it both with all the projections that I read,
- 3:46Speaker 1: that includes ESPN, it includes the Athletic, that includes CBS,
- 3:49Speaker 1: that includes Sporting News. I think I'll read like five
- 3:53Speaker 1: or six different projections, and they're pretty similar, but there's differences.
- 3:59Speaker 1: And every one of those are projecting Texas to reach
- 4:05Speaker 1: the SEC championship game and then lose the rebatch to Georgia.
- 4:09Speaker 1: So then they have Texas projecting in the playoff either
- 4:12Speaker 1: as a six seed or a seven seed or an
- 4:14Speaker 1: eight seed. And in three of or four of the
- 4:19Speaker 1: six projections that I read, they have a first round
- 4:23Speaker 1: matchup of Texas against SMU oh yeah, which would be here.
- 4:28Speaker 1: It would be in Austin if that were the case.
- 4:31Speaker 1: If if Texas wins the SEC, they get a bye
- 4:39Speaker 1: in the first round the playoffs, you get three weeks
- 4:41Speaker 1: off before they play in a bowl game, and it
- 4:45Speaker 1: would be in New Orleans almost certainly, all right. And
- 4:49Speaker 1: then I saw one set of projections that had Texas
- 4:53Speaker 1: winning their quarterfinal game in New Orleans getting to the semifinals. No,
- 5:00Speaker 1: this is something we've talked about last week. Oregon as
- 5:02Speaker 1: the number one seed or even if Ohio State beats
- 5:04Speaker 1: Oregon in a rematch and moves into the number one slot.
- 5:09Speaker 1: In either case Oregon or Ohio State. If you get
- 5:12Speaker 1: to the semifinals, then you go to geographically, what is
- 5:14Speaker 1: closer to your home base. Dallas is closer or Arlington
- 5:18Speaker 1: Cherry World is closer than Miami, So Oregon or Ohio State,
- 5:23Speaker 1: whichever one it is, would then be playing a semifinal
- 5:27Speaker 1: game at the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, whereas Texas would
- 5:32Speaker 1: go to Miami, where I've seen a couple of different projections.
- 5:35Speaker 1: One that has them playing Miami on their home field
- 5:39Speaker 1: at what is it hard Rock Stadium? The other one
- 5:43Speaker 1: has them playing SMU there in the semifinals. Can you
- 5:47Speaker 1: imagine Texas against SMU playing in Miami in the Orange
- 5:50Speaker 1: Bowl and Oregon or Ohio State whatever, and or Ohio State.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Maybe they wind up meeting in the semifinal round Ohio
- 6:02Speaker 1: State of five seed Oregon to one, and then whether
- 6:05Speaker 1: it be a quarterfinal, but anyway, if they wind up meeting,
- 6:08Speaker 1: that would be crazy. That's some of the difference in
- 6:10Speaker 1: the nuance and the craziness of the college football playoff
- 6:13Speaker 1: this year.
- 6:13Speaker 2: But all you can do is to handle your own business.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And if Texas handles its business this week, if they
- 6:19Speaker 1: are able to win the game in College Station, they
- 6:21Speaker 1: would advance the SEC Championship. At that point, you'd have
- 6:24Speaker 1: to consider them pretty much a lock to be in
- 6:27Speaker 1: the College Football Playoff. But then you can take it
- 6:29Speaker 1: one step further by winning the SEC Championship.
- 6:32Speaker 2: They draw by.
- 6:34Speaker 1: At that point, they get some rest, get some weeks off,
- 6:37Speaker 1: and then they just need to win three wins three
- 6:39Speaker 1: games to win the national title instead of four. So
- 6:43Speaker 1: those are some of the things that are out there
- 6:46Speaker 1: right now.
- 6:47Speaker 3: I'm curious with the ACC, Craig, because the ap Powl,
- 6:50Speaker 3: there's three top twelve teams. You have, Miami, SMU, Clemson
- 6:53Speaker 3: all have lost one game the regular season. Clemson has
- 6:56Speaker 3: lost twice. So he plays at Syracuse they should win, yep.
- 7:02Speaker 3: SMU plays California, they should win yep, and that's.
- 7:06Speaker 1: At home too, so cow one the big game they did.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Maybe Stanford didn't even need the Stanford band.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So if we have Clemson or sorry, if we have
- 7:17Speaker 3: Miami SMU and the conference championship with the ACC in Charlotte,
- 7:21Speaker 3: will the loser get in.
- 7:23Speaker 1: That's what the That's what the speculation is because that
- 7:26Speaker 1: would hurt a lot of the other like Indiana. Yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 1: that's what I was talking about last hour. But would
- 7:32Speaker 1: hurt Texas for sure if they would lose this week.
- 7:34Speaker 1: If they lose this week, absolutely it would. That's why
- 7:37Speaker 1: I said the control would be out of their hands.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Here's the thing that would be most damaging to any team,
- 7:45Speaker 1: not just Texas or Indiana, any team that's trying to
- 7:48Speaker 1: get in from the outside. You know, there are people
- 7:49Speaker 1: that are talk about South Carolina still with a shot. Yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 1: South Carolina, if they beat Clemson this week, it spikes them.
- 7:58Speaker 3: They're sixty in the AP. Yeah, they do have three wins,
- 8:02Speaker 3: sorry three three losses. Three losses. And here's the other thing.
- 8:06Speaker 3: They lost Alabama, and Alabama has to be in the playoffs.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Right, It's not a hard and fast rule.
- 8:14Speaker 1: But what could damage teams like Indiana, UH or maybe
- 8:19Speaker 1: a Texas if they were to lose. Whatever would be
- 8:23Speaker 1: if SMU and Miami playing the a SEC Championship game
- 8:28Speaker 1: and SMU wins, because now you're matching Miami's resume against
- 8:34Speaker 1: the others.
- 8:35Speaker 2: So that's why I said it's out of your control.
- 8:39Speaker 1: If they win, If Texas wins this week, They're going
- 8:42Speaker 1: in Atlanta on one loss. The most they would have
- 8:45Speaker 1: is two. And then if you figure in the ACC
- 8:51Speaker 1: Championship game Miami and s and U, somebody's going to
- 8:55Speaker 1: take another loss there, and you know you're going to
- 9:01Speaker 1: feel much better about things if Texas wins this week.
- 9:04Speaker 1: That's why I said if they win this week, to
- 9:06Speaker 1: say nothing of the rivalry and all that that entails,
- 9:10Speaker 1: but to win this week pretty much would lock them
- 9:14Speaker 1: into the playoff. Then you win two games, you win
- 9:17Speaker 1: the SEC title in your first year in the SEC,
- 9:20Speaker 1: and then you also wind up getting a buy in
- 9:25Speaker 1: the first round. And Sark reiterated it today. In fact,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I think you're going to hear it coming up in
- 9:30Speaker 1: this next segment, some more from him about the importance
- 9:33Speaker 1: of winning the Southeastern Conference title, not doing the Lane
- 9:36Speaker 1: Kiffen and let's just see when you get in and
- 9:39Speaker 1: not worry about the SEC title game. Like we said,
- 9:43Speaker 1: Lane didn't have worry about that anymore so, but Texas
- 9:47Speaker 1: can still control its own destiny, handle its business. We'll
- 9:50Speaker 1: hear more from Sark coming up on Sports Radio AM
- 9:52Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app
