- 2:03Moments on the Maury What's up? We got here.
- 2:08We got. Here.
- 2:10It's been too long. It's been too long since all
- 2:12three of us were here. Been like a month.
- 2:14Tally. Man oh man, Tally is going
- 2:18freeze, unfreeze, freeze, unfreeze.
- 2:21That Alabama Internet man. Starlink, can you hear us?
- 2:25Tally, here's now. You moving?
- 2:29Oh, he jumped off. Tally will be back momentarily
- 2:32as he as he takes a baseball bat to the Wi-Fi.
- 2:37Good to have him back as the struggles may be.
- 2:41Brian, just good to be back doing this in general.
- 2:45Get him back up here. You hear us now.
- 2:49Are you, are you, are we getting there?
- 2:52Thanks. So I hope so all.
- 2:56Right, because you. Can hear you.
- 2:58Can you hear us? We'll think we're good.
- 3:02You hear us? Yeah, I can hear you all.
- 3:05Right, Kylie? What's been up, man?
- 3:08I can see Curtis's cool hat. Softball dad baseball season
- 3:14man. Knee deep in baseball season and
- 3:18watching the Virginia Tech Hokies get a lot out of
- 3:22defensive lineman. You damn right, multiple
- 3:27defensive lineman. Go in and we'll see how it goes.
- 3:35But tally is 100% right. A lot of defensive lineman
- 3:39coming on the boat in the last few days.
- 3:41We will hit that in just a few minutes here with the couple of
- 3:46the OR the most recent and one potential tomorrow.
- 3:50We'll talk about that. But you know we got a few other
- 3:54things done low. We are going to do a little
- 3:56spring game preview kind of things that we're looking
- 4:00forward to looking at as likely me and Tally watching on a
- 4:05CCXNX. Is that where it's going to be
- 4:083? Is that what I saw earlier?
- 4:11ACC and extra Yeah. Going to be on at 3:00 so you
- 4:14can see the game live I think. I think I read it's going to be
- 4:18the hokey vision production. So have that which will, but at
- 4:21least you get to see it. We're going to get to that.
- 4:24We kind of got three things. We're pointing out what we're
- 4:27looking for during the game. But obviously some things have
- 4:31changed inside of Hokie Nation since we last came last week.
- 4:36And the biggest is or a couple of the big ones are President
- 4:41Tim Sands is going to be set to retire.
- 4:45I am assuming it's going to be in the next six months after 12
- 4:48years with the university. Ron.
- 4:56Are we ready to? Are we ready to talk about it a
- 4:59little bit? Ready.
- 4:59To talk about a. Little bit, I mean, I think this
- 5:03is something that folks knew was going to probably come down in
- 5:07the next couple years. I think, you know, we probably
- 5:11saw this coming a little bit sooner than I think most people
- 5:15expected with with San stepping down over the coming, you know,
- 5:20whatever six months as they try to, you know, approach a
- 5:23successor and and get that in place.
- 5:27It's it's really interesting because, you know, as all of
- 5:31this is coming out, you know, Franklin's talking with people
- 5:35about institutional alignment and all of a sudden you're like,
- 5:38all right, the president's out. And for all that Tim Sands has
- 5:44done good or I'll, he certainly wasn't someone that was football
- 5:51friendly. In this modern era, sports don't
- 5:54even say football. Yeah, we can say sports.
- 5:57We can say sports. I'll say sports friendly, I
- 6:02mean, because in general, you know, since he got here in 2014,
- 6:07obviously, I mean, not a great 12 year run of football in those
- 6:15years. Not really a 12 year run of any
- 6:18sport On what I would say to me, there's like there's a Big 5.
- 6:23And if you ask me what the Big 5 are, it's obviously football's
- 6:25one, men and women's basketball. But softball and baseball,
- 6:28they're lagging behind. But they get so much notoriety
- 6:32this time of year, right? Like Tally, I know you're down
- 6:36in SEC country, we're in ACC country.
- 6:38Those baseball games are all over the place.
- 6:40Those softball games are all over ESPN.
- 6:43They're all over all the networks.
- 6:45And there was never anything there for him.
- 6:47And then he made the comment about the bubble.
- 6:50Remember the bubble comment? College sport has a bubble
- 6:53that's going to burst and he thought it was going to burst.
- 6:56Well, 12 years later, it ain't burst yet.
- 6:59It's growing bigger and bigger. And then his tenure here.
- 7:02So what you want to say effectively Virginia Tech got
- 7:05behind whether that is his fault or not.
- 7:08Take it however you want it. But Charlie, anything on this?
- 7:12I mean, does it matter to you again, you're you're you're a
- 7:16Virginia Tech sports fan where you know, we have friends
- 7:21neighbors Brian and I have neighbors and friends who are
- 7:23alumni went there. But anything for you.
- 7:28I just want the people to make the sports good.
- 7:30That's all I want. Like if you don't want to make
- 7:32sports good, get out. You know what I'm saying?
- 7:36Get out of here. So I don't know much about what
- 7:39he has done and what he hadn't done, but I know enough people
- 7:42who can tell me what he had and haven't done.
- 7:45DD Cunningham, you guys feel and y'all say it's time to go.
- 7:52So guess what man, Tim's saying it's time to go buddy.
- 7:57You all have a good I'll. Go to the place.
- 8:00There you go. Good one by.
- 8:03Phil, I like what Phil just put up right there because you've
- 8:06got to be willing to move and make the moves as the president.
- 8:10So Tim Sands gone, it will be interesting to see the coaching
- 8:15or the president search. I mean, obviously, are we going
- 8:18to follow a tooth and nail? Probably, but it's probably
- 8:22going to be where they coming from.
- 8:24Because if you come and tell me Tally or Brian, oh, this guy was
- 8:29at the University of Florida or University of Georgia or like a
- 8:33Michigan, OK, you sit here and start saying, OK, they take
- 8:36sports very seriously in all those elements.
- 8:40But if you say it's someone like, I don't know, make up a
- 8:44school Tally, you good at that? Central Sideways, Michigan.
- 8:51There you go. Central sideways Michigan.
- 8:53Oh, wait a second. That ain't a big time sports.
- 8:56Like they're not coming from that big one.
- 8:58So we're going to be sitting here likely doing this.
- 9:05God, they gave me sound effects. They don't know what they've
- 9:07done, Curtis. Curtis started early with them,
- 9:10man. It's going to be all the.
- 9:12Time we get a little bit of a soundboard, Curtis.
- 9:13Like I got, I got to throw it in here.
- 9:15I got to throw it in here man. Oh y'all wait, Tally's getting
- 9:17access starting next week to the soundboard, so y'all can only
- 9:20imagine what he's going to do with this.
- 9:22Time I want to even be a show. I mean tally soundboard.
- 9:26All right, so Sam's gone. The search will be interesting
- 9:31over the probably the I would I would assume it would be similar
- 9:34to Sam's probably October will be the entry.
- 9:39But then we got good news wrote by Andy bitter this this week or
- 9:44late last week and y'all know I'm a butcher of names.
- 9:48I'm going to do my best May Who'll say honey is back on the
- 9:52Bob? Maybe.
- 9:55Hey man, I think you did OK there.
- 9:57I'll, I'll start there. I think you did OK.
- 9:59You got through it and that's that's what counts.
- 10:02But getting Mayhul back and, and the funniest part of the Mayhul
- 10:06the the whole situation was they did him dirty with the initial
- 10:10photo that they threw up there and he and he was hurt about it
- 10:13and Andy brought it up and they got, they got it right.
- 10:17And I, and I commented, I was like, hey now, y'all got to take
- 10:20care of our buddy Terrell Smith. Y'all got to go get him a new
- 10:23photo. Y'all got, y'all got the 1 from
- 10:252020 still floating out there. So, but yeah, getting my whole
- 10:30back on there. I mean, that's somebody that is,
- 10:33that's a, that's a football guy. That's a guy that, that, I mean,
- 10:37he loves all the, all the Virginia Tech athletics, but I
- 10:40mean, he eats, sleeps and breathes Virginia Tech football.
- 10:44And getting that type of person on the board of visitors is only
- 10:47going to be a good thing for football.
- 10:52I just seen him at the game. If you go look up the pictures
- 10:56on Twitter and you see him on the sideline, who was it
- 11:00against? Was it against Miami or Georgia
- 11:02Tech? I can't even.
- 11:05No, it was just Boston College. Boston College.
- 11:07OK Oh yeah, the the blowout game, yeah, I.
- 11:14Think it was Boston College. I mean, he deserves to be on
- 11:17just for that picture, so I'm good.
- 11:20That should be his picture on the BOV, not him in a nice suit.
- 11:23Him screaming into Boston pilot game Obviously having him on
- 11:28there he was or has given the largest donation.
- 11:32Athletics and football clearly a different a step in the right
- 11:37direction with the BOB-2. Again, we're playing catch up,
- 11:40but it's to stay caught up as much as you possibly can.
- 11:44And I think most people know he will definitely stick his neck
- 11:47out there and push the agenda forward to keep Virgin Tech
- 11:50athletics. I'm going to say just in the
- 11:53conversation of one of those programs.
- 11:56All right. Last but not least, which this
- 12:02was expected I think last year at this time, but it didn't
- 12:04happen. John Delenn is retiring in June.
- 12:10On my birthday, what what a gift, what a gift that is, man.
- 12:20This is one that I think a lot of people had been wanting for a
- 12:23long time. And and this is really, you
- 12:26know, when we talk about Virginia Tech from an
- 12:29operational standpoint, being kind of mom and pop operation,
- 12:34John Boleyn in a lot of ways is the face of that from a football
- 12:39perspective at least. So you talk about being able to
- 12:43move past that. You talk about a guy like
- 12:48Franklin coming in and setting up a situation that is football
- 12:53friendly in the athletic department.
- 12:57This is why this is so important because because it's not just we
- 13:03are operating like a major college football program needs
- 13:08to operate now. And I consider John Boleyn the
- 13:13biggest opponent to moving in that direction from a
- 13:18organizational structure, especially when it comes to
- 13:20football, but also within the athletic department in general.
- 13:26You got to get the old people out of there.
- 13:28They got to go, man. You got to get the old people
- 13:32who don't want to hear stick it in young boy, NBA2K, whatever
- 13:37his name is, like I don't want to listen to him, but the kids
- 13:41are going to listen to him. So you got to get, you got to
- 13:44get the place height, man, you got to get it.
- 13:48If you going to be a part of a university, a part of sports,
- 13:55you got to figure out what's going to fill the stands and you
- 13:57got to figure out what can you do to win.
- 14:02Most of the time that's cheap. So we need some people that's
- 14:06going to cheat and some people that's going to turn their head
- 14:09and let me cheat. I will cheat.
- 14:12I don't know what Belandin was doing.
- 14:13They was cheating in another way, like he was putting his
- 14:15family members on the staff. Somebody just said can he get
- 14:18his daughter removed? I don't even know if she's good
- 14:20at what she does, but whatever, I thought she.
- 14:25Moved on a couple years ago, I thought.
- 14:27I thought she was. Oh, she did.
- 14:29What's she doing now? Just.
- 14:32Since she in the basketball staff.
- 14:35OK, I think she's in women's fans in some way.
- 14:38She was, she was with football, so I guess maybe she.
- 14:40Was with football. She just got dragged.
- 14:42Out when things got shuffled. But but what?
- 14:45What Mama Boleyn like she's been in a basketball game for?
- 14:49Years. Oh.
- 14:50Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:52The basketball. Whole family and he'll knock
- 14:55fucking off. Yeah, but, and here's the point
- 14:58about John Boleyn. Because if everybody knows the
- 15:00story, John Boleyn. Hey buddy BI, see you.
- 15:05But the javelin, I think what Tally just said is right.
- 15:10He was too old, dear. He was Frank Beamer's right hand
- 15:13man for a long time. During a lot of good seasons.
- 15:16He made a lot of good things happen because if you look at
- 15:18when he was here, he was like the basically the football
- 15:21operations guy in the early 90s and then the associate AD
- 15:25football. Curtis, I want you to finish
- 15:27your statement. I want you to finish your
- 15:29statement, but you just said Beamer's right hand man.
- 15:33Beamer's right hand man. But this is the point that you
- 15:35make. Wait, listen, in 2015 when Frank
- 15:39left Java Lynch and no, no, no, I can't disagree with.
- 15:43That, no, yeah, right. So that's what I'm going back
- 15:45to. Yeah.
- 15:47I don't even know if Frank knows if he going and coming these
- 15:49days. I love Frank Bingham, but when
- 15:51you see them keep trotting Frank out here, Frank looks like a wax
- 15:54museum statue right now. Like you got to get the old
- 15:58people off the camera and out of stuff.
- 16:01You know what I'm saying? Frank is enjoying retirement.
- 16:03John Boleyn, go enjoy retirement.
- 16:05You know you made enough money. Go find something to do.
- 16:09I know you got a lot of money. Go play some golf and get drunk
- 16:13and I'll run around next year or something, I don't know.
- 16:16Oh no, don't do that. I just believe that I as well
- 16:21depends on what it. Depends.
- 16:26Well, it's not near me. Venue matters a whole lot more
- 16:29than what you're doing there. There, there's a, there's a
- 16:32proper venue for pretty much anything you want to do if you
- 16:35really want to do it. It's true.
- 16:38All right, so Belen's retiring effectively with Sands, gone
- 16:44with Berlin gong. You know, you're talking about
- 16:47what Brian mentioned a few minutes ago in with what James
- 16:52Franklin keeps saying institution alignment and all
- 16:55this. It looks like certain pieces are
- 16:57moving out. A president not as inclined to
- 17:02support athletics, a executive AD who's more inclined to try to
- 17:06do stuff on the pops way, get them gone, bring new blood in,
- 17:12bring young people in. Somebody late night who who is
- 17:16I'm not again, 40s, not young but in their 40s that are seen
- 17:21and saying you need to do this, you need to do this to keep up.
- 17:24We can't do it the old way. Let's talk mindset before,
- 17:27before we got a poll. We're going to throw up here for
- 17:29you in a second here, but let's talk mindset real quick because
- 17:32I think that is the disconnect both with Sans, with went to a
- 17:38degree with John Belen especially is that, and I know
- 17:44WIT kind of predated this a little bit with all this issue
- 17:47predated with a little bit. But the problem that we had from
- 17:51Virginia Tech perspective, especially when it comes to
- 17:54football is that Frank was able to do it this way.
- 17:58Anybody else should be able to come in here and do it the same
- 18:02way. The problem was is twofold #1
- 18:06just cause Frank can do it that way doesn't mean that's the only
- 18:08way it can be done #2 the reason that Frank was pushed out when
- 18:15he was was because things changed and it wasn't working
- 18:20anymore. It wasn't working anymore.
- 18:24Doing it the way we did it from 93 to 2011 wasn't cutting it
- 18:31anymore. It wasn't cutting it anymore.
- 18:34So keeping everything from an operational standpoint the same
- 18:39and just putting in a new coach that that's only going to get
- 18:43you so far. Even even you know, we can shit
- 18:45on Fuente all we want to. We can shit on Pry all we want
- 18:48to. We get that they didn't get the
- 18:50job done, but at the same point in time, things behind the
- 18:54scenes were not operating the way they needed to to give them
- 18:56the best chance for success. I, I agree.
- 19:02I mean, I think that's on point right there.
- 19:05And that's why and again, it took a little bit too long, but
- 19:07you're now seeing kind of the winds of change happen and
- 19:10you're seeing the winds of change.
- 19:11Hold on a second with the poll, Brian, because this is something
- 19:14you brought up at the BOV meeting.
- 19:18Donations are up 25% across the board for the most part.
- 19:24It's only like 1 sector of donation limits is down.
- 19:28Everybody else is up significantly.
- 19:30And right now the amount collected is at all time highs.
- 19:36Like, there you go, you start moving people out of the way.
- 19:39You start getting people in to do new things, new ways, money.
- 19:42Starts. That is a damn good start
- 19:46because money make the world go round.
- 19:48I mean, it's, it's like Wu totals, right?
- 19:56But real quick, we want to try a little something.
- 19:58A lot of people in the comments love seeing it for a poll
- 20:03question. We got to see how this works.
- 20:06And you, you answer the poll question by putting the number
- 20:10you agree with. So which of the three moves is
- 20:13going to impact Hokies football the most?
- 20:15The retiring of Tim Sands. The retiring of John Belen #2 or
- 20:20Mayhul getting back on the Bob, Tim Sands one, Belen's two,
- 20:26Mayhul's three. Put it in the chat and we'll see
- 20:30what y'all are thinking. We'll check back in in a little
- 20:32while on this because all three moves are significant in in both
- 20:38to me, all positive. Hey, look at that.
- 20:42It worked. It worked up.
- 20:45Way to go, Phil. You first.
- 20:47First in, first out, baby. So if you put a number in, give
- 20:50us your opinion, we'll keep it up on the screen there.
- 20:52It's to the left, Batali, answer it up.
- 20:55We got to split. We got to split decisions here,
- 20:58but let's talk Kylie, you mentioned at the beginning of it
- 21:02and Kylie, you, you kind of gotten a little bit back into
- 21:06it. You weren't here last week with
- 21:07Frisbee and Taylor. We talked about the two kids up
- 21:10out of Maryland defensive lineman that committed.
- 21:12But you hit me and Brian up just the other day and you said we're
- 21:18going to get Perkins and we did get Xavier Perkins, 6 foot two,
- 21:24240 LB edge out of Jordan High School in Durham, NC.
- 21:28I can remember Jordan, I believe they had those blue helmets.
- 21:33Borderline a top 10 prospect. I mean, he's a whisper away from
- 21:38being a four-star. Lot of offers across the board.
- 21:44So Kylie, you read up on him a little bit more than me and
- 21:47Brian have. What do you like about the kid
- 21:50that holds offers from, you know, places like Miami,
- 21:53Louisville, Auburn, you know, Ole Miss, quite a few good
- 22:02schools out there wanting him? Yeah, no, just good, good
- 22:06production, good offer list. If you go and look up and down
- 22:10his, you know, social media, Miami was all over him.
- 22:14I mean, he was, I don't want to say a lot.
- 22:17There's no kids a lot even when they commit.
- 22:19But I mean, he's got Ruben bang retweets all type of stuff down
- 22:25his down his X page, down his social media.
- 22:28So you know, he was at Miami a lot.
- 22:32You know, of course Miami is the hot team.
- 22:34They just went, you know, national championship.
- 22:37So they got the best, one of the best D lines that we've seen in
- 22:45the past. What I don't know, maybe 10
- 22:47years. So it was a lot of reasons for
- 22:50that kid to go to Miami like it. It's not hard to sell Miami on a
- 22:56defensive Miami, but Franklin them did their job and and chaos
- 23:02and got in there and plucked them away.
- 23:04So I'm interested to see because it's still a lot of like high
- 23:09defensive lineman that's on the board that I think we sit well
- 23:12with. You know, I'm no recruiting
- 23:13guru, I'm just nosy, but I'm interested to see how many D
- 23:17lineman they take. Because if you think about the
- 23:18offensive lineman this year, we took a lot of offensive lineman
- 23:22this year, I think maybe 7 or 8, which we need.
- 23:26So when you start to look at defensive lineman, it's like who
- 23:30all is going to hop in? Who are they going to let hop
- 23:32in? Who are they?
- 23:33You know, who is at the top of the board?
- 23:35But Xavier Perkins is a good pick up from a recruiting
- 23:40standpoint. A little bit undecized.
- 23:43Sometimes that kind of worries me just because, you know, I
- 23:47want everybody to be beat, but a little bit undecized.
- 23:50But like I said, when a school like Miami is hard, after you
- 23:53like, hey man, I got to trust what they do.
- 23:57Yeah. I think, I think it's a good
- 23:59player. Yeah, Weights.
- 24:01Definitely. And the weight is there.
- 24:02I think, you know, 62 probably not quite as long as maybe you
- 24:06want at ADN, but I mean, you know, coming in at 2:40, I don't
- 24:12know if that's a true 240. Obviously that's that's kind of
- 24:14a TBD at this point, but it probably isn't that far off
- 24:19right. So you're probably at least
- 24:20talking 2:30, which is, you know, decent, decent weight for
- 24:25somebody at, you know, at six two coming in playing DN, you
- 24:28know, looking at the tape, you know, I like to get off.
- 24:30He he, he played with his hand in the dirt some, he played
- 24:33standing up some. So he's got some of that
- 24:34versatility to be able to do that.
- 24:38You know, just like you said, Tally looking at somebody that
- 24:42had the eye of Miami pretty heavy.
- 24:44Yeah, that's going to be somebody that you want to have
- 24:46in your in your building and and getting that commit, you know,
- 24:50early in the cycle. I think it's going to be good.
- 24:52Obviously we got a a handful of other big time defensive line
- 24:58players that we sit pretty good with.
- 25:03And I think to your point tally, I think this is going to be a
- 25:05very defensive line focused class.
- 25:10I think we'll still see us take probably, you know, about 5
- 25:14offensive lineman. I think that's about what you
- 25:16need to take just about every cycle, four or five at least.
- 25:19And I so I think you're still going to see that this cycle.
- 25:22But I think looking at where our depths sits on the defensive
- 25:26line and kind of what we need to do to backfill there, I think
- 25:31that's why you're going to see a big focus in this class on
- 25:35defensive line, especially that edge position.
- 25:38Yeah. And and we talked about, we're
- 25:40asked if the two 40s legit. I think the two 40s legit, all
- 25:43the recruiting sites have him around 2:40, a couple of them
- 25:47have him at 63. So maybe he's like the one of
- 25:50those two and three 4262 and three quarter guys 240.
- 25:54So I think the weight's legit. Now, obviously.
- 25:56Can that change? Yeah, because people's body
- 25:58change. Like if he grows to 6/4, he
- 26:00ain't going to weigh 240 lbs anymore.
- 26:02He probably going to weigh 2:30. But that gives you more mass or
- 26:05more height to work for the mask on.
- 26:08So very good pick up there one tomorrow.
- 26:13We are in the hunt for. Keep an eye on this one because
- 26:18Joseph Buchanan up out of McDonough, 4 star, top 20D
- 26:25lineman, top five player in the state, top 200 player
- 26:28nationally. That kids a stud and no crystal
- 26:32balls yet. Nobody knows what he's going to
- 26:34do, but by all indications, we've been hot on him.
- 26:44He's set to make an official visit in about sometime next
- 26:48month, I believe. So that would be Kyle.
- 26:53I'm assuming this is one of the guys you have like on your radar
- 26:56is one of the big defensive ends left just because of where he
- 27:00sits nationally across? Oh yeah, I mean, Chris Whitehead
- 27:04out of Virginia is probably the number one guy that you want to
- 27:08get. I think he's the number one
- 27:09player in Virginia and I can't remember what he said
- 27:11nationally. But.
- 27:13I think he's right. Around yeah, so any so I mean,
- 27:16that's that's the kid that you want.
- 27:18Of course, you know, Virginia kid that can play, but Buchanan
- 27:24out of Maryland is he's pretty highly ranked man, and he's got
- 27:29you can go watch his film. You can see why it's highly
- 27:31ranked. You know, got great size when
- 27:33you talk about, you know, 64260 and he's saying he's a he's a
- 27:42edge. He's not a because I think some
- 27:45one of the sites said interior lineman and he goes on there and
- 27:49says I'm not an interior lineman.
- 27:51He may get moved to that, but what he's playing now he's
- 27:55saying he's a defensive end. So I mean at that size, that's a
- 28:01little different man to be and and to move how he moves.
- 28:04So if you're going to watch him like he's the legit, he's a
- 28:07legit player man. And it's, it's crazy because
- 28:11everybody knows like that James Franklin can recruit.
- 28:14That's not I, I don't think that no fan that watches football
- 28:19says, well, he's going to have trouble recruiting.
- 28:21But in the, the way that he's getting people to just like,
- 28:26it's not like, Oh, we on this kid and it's taking months.
- 28:29And then we're, it's like, you never hear about these players.
- 28:33And then next thing you know, it's like, oh, they got to
- 28:35recruit. I mean they have a a commitment
- 28:37date coming. Back in a week.
- 28:39You know, so it's, it's quick. So whatever he's selling, man.
- 28:43And we, you know, I had some boots on the ground.
- 28:45I had some eyes up there in Blacksburg, just to let you all
- 28:48know, because I got my ears to the street.
- 28:53The stuff that he says, because sometimes I, I know people say
- 28:58he says the same thing in every, in every, you know, interview
- 29:02that he's given. But when he says the big thing
- 29:06that stood out to some people that I had up there, when he
- 29:09says it should look big time, feel big time, smell big time,
- 29:14they said that's what it is. You know, people who were in
- 29:18meetings, in the practice, in, you know what I'm saying, the
- 29:23facility, the workouts, I mean, right at Ground Zero, they said
- 29:30it is no nonsense situation going on up there right now, you
- 29:36know, and everything is is big time.
- 29:38Let me tell you something else, Curtis.
- 29:39Let me tell you what I like. You tell me.
- 29:41What a lot of people had a problem with and that cartoon
- 29:44guy, whatever his name is, I don't want to give him too much
- 29:47credit because I don't want to give him no kind of shine on our
- 29:50show. But he's an idiot.
- 29:52So it's more people that kind of go with that saying that he
- 29:57says, they say, well, oh, James Franklin wants to make it about
- 29:59him. If you go somewhere and it's a
- 30:04shit hole when you want to make it better, you know what I'm
- 30:08saying? So when, when when James
- 30:10Franklin said we had stuff on the walls that was from 2
- 30:14coaches ago, yeah, that shit should have been down.
- 30:18Like, I mean, come on man. Like why am I going to have a
- 30:21picture of Justin Fuente on the wall or anything he said when he
- 30:26clearly didn't want to be in Virginia, You know what I'm
- 30:29saying? Like he didn't, he didn't do
- 30:33nothing he'll do. He deserves to have no kind of
- 30:36place on the wall or statue or anything like that.
- 30:40Now, if he were to say it, are we going to remove everything?
- 30:42Frank Beemo Yeah, we're going to do some talking about that.
- 30:46But when he's talking about these other coaches that have
- 30:48come pry Fuente, which pry still around.
- 30:53So you going to have some of his philosophy things that he say
- 30:56and do are going to be around. But yeah, you have to make it
- 31:01about you because it's your philosophy.
- 31:03You're the coach, you are the basic, you're the face of the
- 31:08program. So why wouldn't you want it to
- 31:11be changed and want it to go the way that you want it to go?
- 31:14Because when the when the when the ALS rack up, it's on you.
- 31:19Every time we was talking about things that was going on in a
- 31:22game last year or the last 3-4 years and somebody goes, oh,
- 31:26it's the I said it's Pry. It is him.
- 31:29He's the head coach. That's where it's stopped,
- 31:32right, Because who can who can make changes?
- 31:36The head coach can say don't play that guy, play that guy.
- 31:39Eventually it's it's the it's the old Harry Truman line, right
- 31:41Brian, it's true the buck stops here because I'm getting paid
- 31:48more than anybody right now in the state of Virginia got wise
- 31:52James Franklin not a half $1,000,000.
- 31:54So, yeah, but class is off to a good start tomorrow would be
- 32:00nice. Whitehead would be unbelievable.
- 32:02Just just an FYI if you wondering about Chris Wrighthead
- 32:05for those here in in Richmond, he is down at LC Byrd.
- 32:09He is the number one player in Virginia, the number.
- 32:13He is a five star composite. He is a top five edge guy,
- 32:18basically a top 25 national player.
- 32:20We ain't seen the likes of that Joe macho was O 8 right macho,
- 32:27macho. So there you go no Kim before
- 32:30Kim before was like 40th player in the country.
- 32:33We ain't seen many of them all right, let's roll on and let's
- 32:36get in the spring game and I'm going to go on my rant real
- 32:39quick here, because y'all know I have to.
- 32:42We don't know what the format we don't we you know give me give
- 32:46me loaded up here. We don't know what the spring
- 32:48game format is yet. Apparently we're going to get
- 32:52prestage tomorrow and hopefully we find out that it's the right
- 32:58way. So Coach Franklin, I know you're
- 33:00in your office because you're a workaholic.
- 33:02You probably, you probably went home for dinner for about an
- 33:04hour on that with the wife, drove back over to Merriman.
- 33:09Please, please, please can we make the football game Saturday
- 33:14in the format? Beat offense versus defense, all
- 33:18of all the offense on one side, all the defense on the other.
- 33:21Mix and match the twos versus the ones, the walk ONS versus
- 33:25the walk ONS, the ones versus the walk ONS, just so we can see
- 33:28how ugly it'll get. Because what has killed me in
- 33:31the last decade is watching a spring game where it's like
- 33:34we're going to split the roster up.
- 33:37We ain't there yet to where we can split the roster up.
- 33:41I'd like to see us one day be there, but when that roster gets
- 33:45dropped tomorrow, and if it is the format I think it's going to
- 33:49be, which is going to make me sad, mad, but that is what it
- 33:51is. We going to sit here and be like
- 33:55whoever got Ethan Grotmeyer and whoever's got three good lineman
- 33:58is going to win the game. Candidly, don't matter because
- 34:02that's the way it's been the last half decade.
- 34:05If you got the quarterback and you got a good lineman because
- 34:08the running backs ain't gonna play that much.
- 34:10So please, if you haven't read it all out yet, go offense
- 34:15versus defense. You can mix it up.
- 34:17You can keep guys healthier. All right, I know where Curtis
- 34:23stands and and I'm going to, I'm going to be the, you know, you
- 34:28can call me a fence sitter if you want to.
- 34:29I I've got my foot in both camps on this one and I'll tell you
- 34:34why. If you're looking, if you're
- 34:38like us and you want to watch a game and figure out the depth
- 34:41chart and figure out how pieces are looking when they play
- 34:44together and figure out all those things that potentially
- 34:49could matter in the fall, then offense versus defense is what
- 34:53you want to see. If you want to go to the spring
- 34:57game and watch a form of football that looks more like a
- 35:04game, then you want to split roster.
- 35:07And for the most part, with this being an exhibition with us
- 35:12trying to pack lane, I've got a feeling they're going to lean
- 35:15towards more of that split roster format where it's more of
- 35:19a traditional game flow that your average casual fan is
- 35:25looking to experience. And I don't think that's
- 35:28necessarily a bad thing, but I do think that it will make it
- 35:33harder for people like us to get a real evaluation of how much
- 35:40this roster has improved at the moment with the pieces that we
- 35:44brought in with Franklin at the head of this thing.
- 35:48Because you're you know, you're going to get vanilla scripts
- 35:50from Pry. You know you can get vanilla
- 35:54scripts from how? Man, we better get some
- 35:56chocolate and caramel scripts and pry, you know long enough.
- 36:00Don't be hiding shit. You better be doing something,
- 36:04Brent. But but I'll put vanilla on top
- 36:06of vanilla for you Tally, just so you did MAD.
- 36:09I, I, I, I, I just want to see a better product than we saw last
- 36:13year. And like, there, there's, there
- 36:15was a whole lot of reasons that last year's spring game sucked.
- 36:19Number one was the weather #1 I mean the weather it was.
- 36:23It was 40° with a 30° wind chill at kickoff.
- 36:27This year. That's what you want.
- 36:30God, this year Tyler, I wish me and you could go bring your.
- 36:34Sunscreen. Bring your sunscreen.
- 36:37Saturday in Blacksburg is going to be like 85°.
- 36:42The rain is coming in overnight, so probably as the day goes on,
- 36:46it's probably going to cool down a little bit and feel really
- 36:49nice. Sunny.
- 36:52Oh man, I don't even know what to say.
- 36:55But I mean, but so other things that were wrong with the spring
- 36:58game last year, you had a basically a lame duck head
- 37:01coach. So like the enthusiasm of what
- 37:04they wanted to see wasn't there. So you weren't going to get the
- 37:06crowds that you normally get. Add in the weather, you got even
- 37:09less crowds and I think you would have gotten with with good
- 37:12weather. That's a fairpoint, Phil, That's
- 37:17a fairpoint. And I and I think that's that
- 37:18that goes that goes without saying.
- 37:21But the the third thing is that you had your number one and #2
- 37:25quarterbacks out, You had a couple lineman banged up and you
- 37:29split the rosters. And now you've got red shirt
- 37:33freshman and true freshman quarterbacks running this thing
- 37:39behind a split offensive line. And they're still at the point
- 37:45where they're processing the offense because again, it was a
- 37:48new install offense with these freshmen and true freshmen.
- 37:52So all these things blending together created an absolute
- 37:56shit show of a game to watch. And I was, I was, I was well
- 38:00into the cups at that point. So that made it a little bit
- 38:04more palatable for me. But I can, I can't imagine
- 38:09watching that thing sober. Y'all y'all want to go see
- 38:12something funny and Tal I don't know if you watched it the live
- 38:16show Brian did with like Pete me I mean that y'all are all
- 38:20fucking hammered Well nobody's sober up there the.
- 38:23Problem was me and me and Pete left the the game like it was
- 38:27like 445 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
- 38:30We were like, we're getting out of here, we're going to TOTS,
- 38:32We're getting a rail before we go over to Maroon Door.
- 38:35So get a rail at Maroon Door, walk around, go over to or get a
- 38:39rail of TOTS, go to Maroon Door. I start, I hit I had two gin and
- 38:43tonics after the rail before we even started that stream.
- 38:47So that gives you a a good barometer of kind of where I was
- 38:50sitting at that point in time. Needless to say, at the middle
- 38:59of that stream my my wife held up a little sign on a note paper
- 39:04to say you're saying fuck a lot. So, so tally, so tally any, any
- 39:12feelings on the format of the game or is that something you're
- 39:15going to talk on later? You can hold together.
- 39:22You there tally check check. I'm pretty sure I'm lagging.
- 39:33You're lagging, but that's fine. Lagging is OK as long as we get.
- 39:36I got you. I think.
- 39:42It's a two way lag. I think it's a two way lag.
- 39:53We lost him, but anyway, we'll we'll get him back in just a
- 39:57second here as we get into kind of the spring game preview,
- 39:59three things that we're looking at thinking about as we have the
- 40:04game on Saturday, obviously Brian heading down.
- 40:08Brian, while Tally's getting back up here, give him a give
- 40:10him a shameless plug of where you're going to be pregame and
- 40:13who you going to be with. Shameless plug.
- 40:15Here we go. All right, I'll get Tally back.
- 40:19Oh, you got Tally back in there? We.
- 40:20Go, I got him some. Shame.
- 40:21Shameless plug for this weekend, Saturday spring game day.
- 40:27Come to Chicken Hill. Top part of the hill, back, back
- 40:31part of the parking lot there. Right on the right on the very
- 40:33top there, right on the little grassy curtain where the it's
- 40:37nice and flat there. We're going to be set up noon,
- 40:41noon. We're we're we're going live.
- 40:43It's me, PB, Sam from too deep as well.
- 40:48And Dan Pulse from Tales from the Terror Domes are going to be
- 40:50a couple other fun guests here. They're popping in with us.
- 40:54But we're going to do about an hour pregame show right there at
- 40:57noon. There's going to be tailgate so
- 41:00full tailgate spread our man Steven and Nate are are hosting
- 41:05this thing, so there's going to be some really good food.
- 41:07They got some pulled pork, got some sauces, got some wings, got
- 41:11got some fun sides that they're bringing tunes will be going.
- 41:14So come check that out. There's going to be a Venmo
- 41:18there. If if y'all want to throw throw
- 41:20a few bones Stevens way. He's he's he's pulling all this
- 41:23food and stuff together for this event for us.
- 41:26So and anything y'all can contribute is is appreciated is
- 41:30going to be BYOB. There will be a bourbon table
- 41:32for some sampling. But aside from that BBYOB.
- 41:36So come see us. It's going to be a good time.
- 41:41Man, I'm pissed I ain't going to be there.
- 41:45And we all, and we. All I was like, come on, Tally,
- 41:48let's get up here, man, let's get up here.
- 41:50And so much going on. Listen, anybody in the chat, if
- 41:54you don't have kids, keep it that way.
- 41:57Do not have kids. The worst thing you can do with
- 42:01your life and your money? You're.
- 42:04Going to be a rich. Man or woman and have all your
- 42:08time to yourself. If you don't have the kids,
- 42:12don't have them. Tally Tally is endorsing the
- 42:17DINK lifestyle. Geez.
- 42:19School income, no kids. Life, man, don't do it my.
- 42:24Son, shut up, Tally. He was going.
- 42:26We got to we got to see what's going on with him.
- 42:28I got to take him to the doctor tomorrow.
- 42:29But he he's got a baseball tournament this weekend, the end
- 42:36of the year tournament and then so he'll be Saturday.
- 42:40We got game. So I just got roped in and
- 42:43couldn't do nothing and I'm sad about it.
- 42:45Just to let y'all know. I'm saying I got back-to-back
- 42:48games and I am a coach. Yeah.
- 42:52For a bunch of for for a bunch of sweet little, sweet little
- 42:56pre-K and kindergarten girls. Oh.
- 42:59Man. Yeah, they're Hokies, man.
- 43:00They're Hokies. They're Hokies.
- 43:03There you go. That's all right.
- 43:04That's where it needs to know people who are running the
- 43:06league. They usually put you on the team
- 43:08that you know that, that you don't like the hats.
- 43:11But let's get into it. I've been, I kind of mentioned
- 43:14from the top of the program, we're going to start that now.
- 43:17And obviously as we get into the chat, chat, give us some of the
- 43:22things you're looking at on Saturday.
- 43:24But we're looking like we kind of me and Tally and Brian, we've
- 43:26kind of talked and went back and forth in like 3 things that
- 43:30we're looking forward to or looking into for Saturday.
- 43:33So Tally, I won't let you lead off because when you hit this,
- 43:36I'm like, man, you, you nailed this 100%.
- 43:39I mean, main thing just it's a spring game.
- 43:42I mean, you can't put much validity into it, but who's
- 43:45playing, who's not, who's hurt? That's the one of the main
- 43:49things that, you know, I would be paying attention to because
- 43:53anybody hurt right now, anybody not playing is not only missing
- 43:56reps on a brand new team, you're also missing, you know, some
- 44:00camaraderie and things like that.
- 44:04A lot of a lot of these kids, it's going to be the first time
- 44:06running out of that lane, you know what I'm saying?
- 44:09You get the, you know, kind of see how somebody handles that.
- 44:13So I will be definitely looking at who's hurt, you know, who's
- 44:17playing. And again, Franklin's a brand
- 44:21new coach, man. He's not holding spots.
- 44:24So if you're hurt and you can't get healthy, you might be ending
- 44:29up at Norfolk State. I'm just saying.
- 44:34Yeah. That's what I'll.
- 44:35Check it out. No, no, not that when you
- 44:37brought it up and you know, and I'll hit nine in a second here,
- 44:40I'll let Brian kind of follow up, but you're right.
- 44:42Who is playing, who's not? Because if you can't go out
- 44:47there in the heat of competition, and I know they've
- 44:49had scrimmages, y'all, there's been several scrimmages, there's
- 44:51practices, but it's like full stadium.
- 44:55We're trying to run it like a real game.
- 44:57If you can't go out there, it is something to be said.
- 45:01Now, clearly, I do think Franklin's a smart enough guy
- 45:05that if a key player who's busted their ass all spring,
- 45:08that has looked good as Nick, like you ain't playing today.
- 45:12But guys who are fighting for the 2D or special teams, you
- 45:16better fight through it. Because I mean, I think, I mean,
- 45:21Brian's probably going to have his roster list out there, but
- 45:23have him being like, I don't see #44 where's 44?
- 45:29It better. Not be doing it.
- 45:31And I will pull it up before I go into the stadium because we
- 45:34all know how that goes, especially if they're going to
- 45:36pack, pack this thing which they're trying to do.
- 45:38We'll, we'll see how that goes. I definitely think we're going
- 45:41to see at least double what we saw last year, but we'll see if
- 45:43they can get that thing filled up. 6060 thousand hey.
- 45:47Any. Any.
- 45:47Any. Feelings on what?
- 45:48Tally said. That was one of his things, Ron
- 45:50just. Yeah.
- 45:51I mean, I think, you know, Tally hit it hit it really well
- 45:54because I mean, that's that's the biggest thing you're talking
- 45:56about And who's playing matters both right now for us to be able
- 46:02to evaluate, but it also matters for like everything going
- 46:05forward into the fall because to to to Tally's point, I mean,
- 46:09this is you're missing reps in a new offense or new defense.
- 46:14I know it's a mostly same defense, but at the same time,
- 46:17it's still, you know, there's nuances that prize probably
- 46:21going to be put in there that we didn't see last year.
- 46:25And then you look at the camaraderie piece and then you
- 46:28look at, you know, does this put anybody that isn't able to play,
- 46:33even if they are, you know, even if you got them penciled into
- 46:37the 2 deep, is this hurting their chances of being that you
- 46:40going from second team to starter?
- 46:42Is this helping their chances from going, you know, from
- 46:46fringe second team up in the, you know, firmly in the second
- 46:49team? I think that that's where, you
- 46:51know, some of these guys being nicked up, whether it's, you
- 46:53know, Terry or Howling. I mean, you know, Terry may be
- 46:55going howling. You know, it is definitely out
- 46:57all spring. So we know we're not going to
- 46:59see him. You know that that's an
- 47:01important piece. And when you look at a position
- 47:04like the offensive line, obviously that's a big thing
- 47:07because you're trying to get your best five out there.
- 47:09It's a position that we have been struggling at really going
- 47:12back, you know, to the 2021 season.
- 47:15I think, you know, 2020 was our last offensive line that you can
- 47:19look at and point to and say that's a good offensive line.
- 47:21You feel good about that offensive line.
- 47:23Everything since then has been kind of downhill and almost
- 47:26progressively. So it's almost gotten worse.
- 47:28And we can, we can talk about the lack of recruiting the
- 47:32position properly and backfilling and having to rely
- 47:35on transfers coming into the spring to kind of fill some
- 47:38holes and things like that. Like there's, there's been a lot
- 47:41of problems with the offensive line, which we've talked about
- 47:43ad nauseam. So I'm not going to, you know,
- 47:46belabor the point much further than that.
- 47:47But it's this is where you can kind of gel and and become a
- 47:53unit and get that camaraderie because more than any other
- 47:56place on the field, that offensive line needs to work as
- 48:00a unit. It's not, it's not players just
- 48:05working in tandem within a scheme.
- 48:08It is players working literally communicating every snap and
- 48:12having to do one job to open up holes or one job to, to to
- 48:17protect the quarterback. So that that that is more
- 48:20important from a camaraderie standpoint than probably any
- 48:22other position group on the field.
- 48:26All right, so obviously 1 of Bron's key points here is the
- 48:30offensive line play and it's right not having howling there
- 48:33we'll. Get there you'll.
- 48:34Have to get you're going to have to get what you have one back
- 48:36into here in a second. Not getting not having howling
- 48:39definitely hurts. Apparently from what I heard the
- 48:47the the Terry was a little bang banged up.
- 48:51Sound like he's been doing those stuff just banged up.
- 48:55But also you heard the conversations about guys like
- 48:58Johnny Garrett's been inside some and that's and the honest
- 49:01truth is he's OK if he's your swing tackle, if he's just your
- 49:05swing guy 3 positions, that's fine.
- 49:09But yeah, it kind of correlates with Tally's point with the
- 49:13offensive line is the being hurt, not being out there not
- 49:17working together. Also goes by my format works
- 49:20better because you literally can try every single possible
- 49:24combination when they're all on the same team.
- 49:27Yeah, I stuck format back in there.
- 49:31OK, let me get on mine because Brian went on his offensive line
- 49:34rant. I think skill positions.
- 49:38I'm interested to see, first of all, the stories coming out
- 49:41about Overton. Apparently Overton has been from
- 49:45everything we've heard, reporters, tallies inside, folks
- 49:49talking to us, other people being on grounds.
- 49:52Overton has looked like what the white Victoria years ago said he
- 49:56was like. That kid is not a three story.
- 49:59That kid is almost a five star. That kid is one of the best
- 50:01players in the country, if not the state.
- 50:03I want to see him. I want to see Luke Reynolds.
- 50:06I want to see how that tight end room shaped out.
- 50:09But what caught my ear listening to to Coach Franklin speak in a
- 50:14couple interviews I've been watching here and there this
- 50:16week is Franklin said aloud. He believes y'all hear me?
- 50:22He believes that wide receiver can be a legitimate too deep.
- 50:29So from his vantage point right now, he believes that there are
- 50:336 guys that can have significant amount of reps in this offense.
- 50:39And obviously we've heard Aiden Green, we've seen some like
- 50:43Brody Adams, Keelan Adams pictures, we've heard the
- 50:46Keyshawn stuff. I want to see what the skill
- 50:48positions look like. And it's not so much the guys I
- 50:51know who are coming in proving like Luke, like Jeff, but it's
- 50:55the other guys because I don't think he's going to say certain
- 50:58things like 2D unless somebody is really impressing him.
- 51:03That's the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th guy, yeah.
- 51:07Man, you know, we've heard a lot about, you know, somebody that
- 51:11that that keeps getting their name mentioned.
- 51:13That's kind of like, come on, is Luke Stewie?
- 51:15Luke Stewie. Stewie.
- 51:18Hey, man. So if if you've got him coming
- 51:21on, you got a couple of these other guys that are I think
- 51:24finally settling in, whether it's been injuries or a couple
- 51:27other things or some of the young guys.
- 51:29And you know, you, you pair that with Aiden Green coming back
- 51:32good this year. You got obviously Keshawn coming
- 51:35in. I think like all, all of these
- 51:37different, these different elements, they're going to be,
- 51:44you know, Green is the only one that's done it in Blacksburg and
- 51:48a lot of these other guys have done it in spurts.
- 51:51A lot of these other guys have. You're not really had an
- 51:55opportunity. So we've got a lot of youth, at
- 51:57least in terms of Blacksburg snaps, right?
- 52:02But the talent is there. And I don't think we've ever
- 52:05questioned that this is a talented receiver room.
- 52:08I think the question was always going to be, is that talent
- 52:10going to be realized on the field?
- 52:13You know, for one reason or another, that's kind of held it
- 52:15back to this point. Yeah.
- 52:19Any feelings on the skill position or offensive line room?
- 52:22Because that's me and Brian's one of our threes.
- 52:26Yeah, it's just kind of go back down to where we started.
- 52:30When you talk about health, you know what I'm saying?
- 52:32Like we know that they're talented.
- 52:34We know that people have the opportunity to be big players,
- 52:38but it comes down to can we see them on the field?
- 52:41Will we see them on the field? So it just kind of goes back to
- 52:44where we started this segment talking about the health of the
- 52:47players and what we'll get to see.
- 52:49But. I know that, Phil, Phil put this
- 52:53in right before you said the word health.
- 52:56Literally as you were saying the word health, this, this dropped
- 52:58in there. Yeah, he was texting me.
- 53:00That's my guy. And Phil, like this man, I'm
- 53:03trying to get him to let me start going to basketball games
- 53:05with him. I got to go to I got to get up
- 53:07there to mom's on the morn. So I got to get my money, right,
- 53:11Phil? But I will be hitting you up and
- 53:14I'm going to do a full tour. I just need you to have a, you
- 53:17know, I don't need no Jason Voorhees out there.
- 53:19You know, black people wouldn't like being in the woods that
- 53:21much. For real, for real.
- 53:22So well need no scary movie type stuff going on out there.
- 53:26Them slasher films in the 80s didn't really didn't really do.
- 53:30Well, either and you see what I'm saying.
- 53:32So yeah, but now man, that's just that's the main thing, like
- 53:36I said, just going back to health and and and seeing these
- 53:40kids on the on the field. So I'll be excited just to see
- 53:45what new numbers we see on the field because we know that the
- 53:50talent is there, we know that feels, we know the talent that
- 53:56we know the floor has been lifted so we need to see how
- 53:59high the ceiling is all. Right.
- 54:01So Brian, let's get to your number 2 because that floor,
- 54:05that ceiling, those skill players, you, you mentioned me
- 54:10and you talked about this the other Thursday sitting in the
- 54:13basement having a couple of years after poker about how
- 54:16excited you see this guy. Yeah, man, it's got to be the
- 54:19grunk show, right? Like I, I feel like this is
- 54:24something we haven't really seen in a while, which is a, a
- 54:28quarterback that can really spin it has good accuracy,
- 54:33understands how to work within the framework of the offense,
- 54:37can make all the throws. We haven't really seen that type
- 54:41of of talent in Blacksburg in a while.
- 54:44So I'm excited to see him go out there and spend a little bit.
- 54:48You know, when, when Hal's talking about the offense and,
- 54:51and like what the goal is, he keeps saying explosive plays.
- 54:54We're we're talking about explosive plays.
- 54:57So when you talk about explosive plays, that's going to start
- 55:00with being able to open up big holes for your running back, but
- 55:03it's also about your quarterback being able to get shots down the
- 55:07field or hit receivers when they're open so they can catch
- 55:10and run. That's how you make big plays.
- 55:13And being accurate and being able to make all the throws,
- 55:16that gives you a really good start to creating those
- 55:19explosive plays. So I'm excited to see him go out
- 55:21there and spin it. And when you talk about a
- 55:23quarterback that understands the offense, it's not just just
- 55:28making the throws, but it's about knowing where to go with
- 55:31the football quickly. And that's one of the things
- 55:33that we've struggled with at the quarterback position for years
- 55:37now is that even when the line was giving them time, the ball
- 55:43wasn't coming out quick enough on a regular basis.
- 55:46Or if it was coming out quick, it wasn't always going to where
- 55:48it needs to be. And so when you have a
- 55:51quarterback that knows what to do and can get rid of the ball
- 55:54quickly, that makes everything else look better.
- 55:58And if you can stay in front of the sticks, that makes the
- 56:00quarterback's job a whole lot better as well.
- 56:03So I'm excited to see Grunt go out there and spend it.
- 56:06I'm excited to see what this offense is going to look like
- 56:09with him kind of pulling the trigger.
- 56:11I think it's going to be something that we haven't really
- 56:14seen from a passing standpoint, at least going back to Hendon
- 56:20and maybe even further than that.
- 56:22So I'm looking forward to that aspect.
- 56:24And even though I know we're going to get mostly kind of
- 56:26Vadilla schemes in the offense, I'm excited to see what they do
- 56:31within that framework. As he's finishing his blue
- 56:35drink, there anything on Ethan Grunt Meyer?
- 56:39He's the guy he took the longest to get into the.
- 56:42I mean, I think he was one of the first to commit, but one of
- 56:45the last to actually be official.
- 56:49So I mean, he's the quarterback, he's the guy that's who
- 56:51everybody's coming to see. You got to go.
- 56:54Don't matter what he's done anywhere else.
- 56:56It don't matter. It matters what you're doing.
- 56:59Maroon and orange. So we need to see what he's got.
- 57:02We need to see legit quarterback pay.
- 57:06Look at Phil, man, Phil. Phil is having a good time
- 57:09tonight. Hey man, Phil said.
- 57:11Phil said let's start slow. He just want 50% of the passes
- 57:16completed. He's stupid.
- 57:20He said let's, let's, let's do the little things first and then
- 57:23we can get to the big things 100.
- 57:25Percent. I'm going to say this real quick
- 57:26to kind of close it out and jump over to mine.
- 57:30I also want to see what the three backups look like.
- 57:33I want to see like, you know, like going back a decade, me and
- 57:40Brian, this was when I only had one kid, and me and Brian went
- 57:45to the first spring game of the Fuente era and there was a
- 57:49noticeable difference between I'm blanking right now.
- 57:57Why am I blanking on his name? Quarterback.
- 58:03There was a noticeable difference in Gerard and every
- 58:06other quarterback. So why?
- 58:09And I think Brian and clearly I think with Ethan, we had seen
- 58:12Ethan play at Penn State, There's clearly going to be a
- 58:14difference. But what I want to see is of
- 58:17those three and, and I'll let Brian, even though he's going to
- 58:20probably be about 7 or 8IN when he gets to the stadium, I still
- 58:24trust his knowledge to see when so and so drops or when so and
- 58:28so's arm goes. It's different than the other
- 58:30two. That's probably going to be your
- 58:32backup. Now for me, my number 2 is
- 58:35defensive line. We started with the trenches
- 58:38earlier. I'm going to keep them rolling
- 58:39right here. I want to see size wise like
- 58:44what Mensa looks like because he's up above 3 right now.
- 58:47I want to see what Hilson looks like getting off the line.
- 58:51And then I want to see if all the hype that has been put
- 58:55around Aysen Stevenson, I ain't going to say Kamari Copeland
- 58:59because I've seen Kamari Copeland do it.
- 59:00I know he can do it. But all the hype that's been
- 59:03around Aysen Stevenson, Jason Stevens, is that going to come
- 59:08to fruition during a real game or kind of a real game or
- 59:11however you want to say it? But the reason I say that is if
- 59:16you heard coach Franklin Park last week, he wasn't talking
- 59:19about him bending. It sounds like what Shawn
- 59:21Stevens has figured out is Ayson Stevens is not a bend guy, but
- 59:25he's a hold the edge bull rush guy.
- 59:28And, and, and again, you, you start reading more about Spence
- 59:32is, is he one of those guys? Is that his goal?
- 59:35Whatever type of ass rush you are, that's what you need to do.
- 59:38If you 6 foot 4270 and you can't bend the edge with just a little
- 59:42bit, go hold the edge for running plays and bull rush guys
- 59:46back into the lap of the quarterback.
- 59:48Don't do something you can't do because you try to do that.
- 59:51It gets bad. But I think there's just so many
- 59:53unknown, not unknown variables. But it's just like to what you
- 59:57said a little earlier, which I've said kind of all along, the
- 1:00:01floor has been raised just because of the sheer amount of
- 1:00:04talent with these guys and their size.
- 1:00:07So I'm looking forward to just the D line.
- 1:00:10I'm just forward to seeing the combinations.
- 1:00:12I'm looking forward to tally. We, we, we got a little some
- 1:00:16anytime Tally gets on pry. I'm trying to let him, little
- 1:00:26man. I mean, I will, I will, I will
- 1:00:27say one thing on that because I think, I think you hit, you hit
- 1:00:30the nail on the head and I, and I'll make a little bit of a
- 1:00:32comparison for my baseball folks.
- 1:00:35If you're a pitcher, how many pitches do you really need to be
- 1:00:39successful? You need 2 pitches.
- 1:00:43You need 2 pitches. That's all you need to be
- 1:00:46successful. So if if you are a pass rusher
- 1:00:49is very similar, you need to have a go to and then you need
- 1:00:54to have some sort of change up. You don't need anything else.
- 1:00:58You don't have to go, you don't have to master a spin move.
- 1:01:01You don't have to bend the edge, You don't have to bull or you
- 1:01:03don't have to have four or five pass rush moves in your arsenal.
- 1:01:08You have to have one that you're really good at and then
- 1:01:10something to change it up when they start to adapt to what
- 1:01:14you're doing. That's really all you need to
- 1:01:16do. And if you can do that
- 1:01:18successfully and you can hold the edge in the running game,
- 1:01:22you're going to probably play a, a pretty good amount of snaps.
- 1:01:25Now, obviously we got a couple other guys that that have come
- 1:01:27in from the portal that, that might have something to say
- 1:01:30about that. But you know, you, you
- 1:01:31definitely see Ace and Stevens as being a guy that's going to
- 1:01:34be a big factor in the 2 deep for sure.
- 1:01:37How? Yeah.
- 1:01:38How about if you get in the backfield against South Carolina
- 1:01:42and all you got to do is tackle running back and you can't do
- 1:01:45that and he runs about 30 yards? That, that's a, that's a move
- 1:01:48every DN needs to have. They need to have the get the
- 1:01:50quarterback on his ass move. That that's something that
- 1:01:53everyone has to have Tally. You you you you threw us Brian's
- 1:02:00Brian mentions 2 pitches. If you got a good fastball is
- 1:02:04great. You.
- 1:02:05Threw a change up with what you say the second thing you're
- 1:02:08looking at. I think somebody said it earlier
- 1:02:11too in the in the chat. I'd have to go back and look.
- 1:02:13Just talking about the, the James Franklin effect, the
- 1:02:16production of what he brings. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:02:20We've heard a lot about the staff, the players, you know
- 1:02:24what he they want to fill the stadium, all of this stuff.
- 1:02:27So I'm interested to see what the production looks like, you
- 1:02:31know what I'm saying? How they're interacting with
- 1:02:33fans. Do they really?
- 1:02:35How many people show up? You know, how they put the game
- 1:02:38on, just all of the different things that go along with having
- 1:02:44this new coach and a high profile coach.
- 1:02:47You know, we've not had even, you know, Frank was who he was
- 1:02:51at the end of his tenure because everybody knows Frank because of
- 1:02:54what he did here. But we haven't had a high
- 1:02:57profile coach as Franklin to come in.
- 1:03:01You know, Fuente was a hot coach when he came in.
- 1:03:03He wasn't as high profile as James Franklin.
- 1:03:06So I'm interested to see what the I'm interested to see what
- 1:03:12the, what the production looks like, what everything, what, how
- 1:03:16they put on everything, you know?
- 1:03:19Because he going to throw a water bottle and get mad at
- 1:03:21somebody fuck up. Yeah, man, I need to see like
- 1:03:23what the what the intensity looks like from coaches, even
- 1:03:27though it's a spring game. But again, this is their first
- 1:03:29time showing up to a lot of fans because a lot of fans don't
- 1:03:33follow stuff like we do, you know, just wasting your time
- 1:03:37each day paying attention to practice clips or paying
- 1:03:41attention to interviews and stuff like that.
- 1:03:45It just like, hey, I can't wait for football season.
- 1:03:47I'm show up to the games, which is cool.
- 1:03:49That's good. I wish I could do that.
- 1:03:51My life would probably be so much better if I would just,
- 1:03:55well, we would have to be winning.
- 1:03:57But I'm just saying I'll, I'll be interested to see kind of how
- 1:04:00he handles all of that stuff because I think that's going to
- 1:04:03be a big thing of what we're going to see in the season.
- 1:04:06You know what I'm saying? It's going to be how the games
- 1:04:08are going to go in the season and how the the staff is going
- 1:04:11to be during the season as well. As silly as that sounds, just
- 1:04:15like when do they come out to stretch?
- 1:04:16What do they do as far as prep before the game?
- 1:04:20The other thing when you mention this, my mind immediately went
- 1:04:23to because it's going to happen who's in the box for each side
- 1:04:27of the ball, like who's up top, who's on the front, who's on the
- 1:04:30ground? Because Tahal never being that
- 1:04:34primary guy, is he going to stay down because he's always been
- 1:04:38down. We know Brent pride if if it
- 1:04:40holds you fruition, he's always called games from the field.
- 1:04:44He's never been up in the box. Most defensive coordinators
- 1:04:46aren't. So that's going to be the other
- 1:04:48thing interesting to see is Brian gets his binoculars out,
- 1:04:52like across the field. Like there's Brian, Chris, he's
- 1:04:55on the ground. Anthony Midget's on the ground.
- 1:04:58Where's another new guy this Spence?
- 1:05:01Brian's going to be over here pointing out guys.
- 1:05:06Wow, That was just a couple weeks ago.
- 1:05:09Yeah, that's good. A lot of people down there for
- 1:05:12that weekend. LeBron, Anything from what
- 1:05:14Tally's mentioning about the production that that like right
- 1:05:18now hit you or when he threw that to us a couple days ago
- 1:05:21like? Yeah, I think like it's it's the
- 1:05:24nuances because I think I think you're going to still have
- 1:05:28things that are distinctly Virginia Tech, but like also
- 1:05:32what touches is Jane James Franklin putting on it?
- 1:05:35You know, are we going to pack Lane?
- 1:05:37I think that that's an indication of the James Franklin
- 1:05:40effect as well. Like if you're out there packing
- 1:05:42a stadium for a spring game, that that tells you the James
- 1:05:47Franklin effect, like that right there is telling you the James
- 1:05:51Franklin effect. You know, somebody put in here
- 1:05:53about the, the parking situation.
- 1:05:56If there's a reason I'm showing up to the tailgate at 8 for a,
- 1:05:59for a three PM kick for a spring game, like I'm going to be there
- 1:06:04early because I'm, I'm anticipating those spots going
- 1:06:07pretty quick. Even up on Chicken Hill.
- 1:06:11I think it's going to be, you know, you got to operate as this
- 1:06:14almost being a true game day atmosphere, even though, you
- 1:06:20know, it's general parking, even though it's general admission,
- 1:06:22like you got to still operate under the fact that it's going
- 1:06:25to feel and look like a game day experience.
- 1:06:29And I think, you know, when we look at the production part of
- 1:06:32it, what's going to be different?
- 1:06:35Are we going to, are we, are we going to like, does this go all
- 1:06:37the way up to the music that's played in the stadium during the
- 1:06:42music that's played during warmups?
- 1:06:44Like I'm interested to see those aspects as well.
- 1:06:49And and that that'll not necessarily tell me things are
- 1:06:54different, but it it I think it's certainly an indicator of
- 1:06:57this is James Franklin's show, not the athletic department show
- 1:07:01with the head coach is. That true?
- 1:07:05It's 100% true. Like all that stuff, like all
- 1:07:09the stuff that happens Saturday, it's for I think for a lot of
- 1:07:15us, it's like how many people should because if you say 50,000
- 1:07:18should if it, if they pack out of 65, that would be great.
- 1:07:24But like what you said, Brian, and tell you mentioned it
- 1:07:27earlier about like when we're talking about the old kind of
- 1:07:29regime moving out, finally putting you guys in here, What
- 1:07:32is the music like? Like, you know, the the question
- 1:07:36is, I know Brian, you're hip, so you might know, but we'll we'll
- 1:07:40do you think that you are, you are, you know, you know music.
- 1:07:44But what I'm saying is are there going to be songs people have
- 1:07:47never heard? But the kids in North End zone
- 1:07:51and all over the place and the young people are going to be
- 1:07:53jacked about. The players will be jacked
- 1:07:54about. That's the stuff Tally's talking
- 1:07:56about and it's going to be really interesting.
- 1:08:01All right, last thing, third piece.
- 1:08:03I'm going to start off on this one because it's been kind of
- 1:08:06we, we, we discussed safety room a lot and now we just keep
- 1:08:10getting these mentions of well knowledge.
- 1:08:13Harold was playing some safety, IBM was playing some safety.
- 1:08:16So and so was playing Kenny Woosley was playing some safety.
- 1:08:19Look at that right on time. I see, but it's your time.
- 1:08:22We're seeing guys playing inside and out.
- 1:08:25I'm interested to see that rotation.
- 1:08:27I'm interested and I know it's not all going to be laid out
- 1:08:30like a real game, but I want to see who from the cornerback room
- 1:08:35goes out, who from that room goes inside and out, who goes
- 1:08:39back to safety? Because we we talked about the
- 1:08:44safety room was an issue. They didn't get anybody.
- 1:08:48But with some of these guys they brought in and other guys on the
- 1:08:52in the roster already. Is that why they didn't?
- 1:08:55It's just like you know what, we we got 3-4 guys who can easily
- 1:08:59go back and play a strong safety.
- 1:09:01You know, we can easily get in the nickel package and they can
- 1:09:03be that we can go to a three look and these guys can do that.
- 1:09:07So I'm interested to see that rotation from an aspect of is
- 1:09:12that why we didn't recruit safeties?
- 1:09:15Yeah. I'm I'm interested in in seeing
- 1:09:17that as well because you know, everything that we're hearing,
- 1:09:21it sounds like prize going to have elements of the defense
- 1:09:27that was ran last year, at least from a some safety look.
- 1:09:31It's not going to be his traditional 43 look.
- 1:09:34It's going to be more of a, of a of a hybrid potentially, you
- 1:09:37know, three safety look, but it's still going to be, I think
- 1:09:42the elements of of what he did at Penn State are still going to
- 1:09:46be there. So that that safety play is
- 1:09:50important that that rotation. I think Curtis, you mentioned,
- 1:09:52you know, corner. Corner has been, you know, we
- 1:09:55talked about it last year. Corner was probably the second
- 1:09:59weakest position for us last year outside of offensive line.
- 1:10:05You know, some of that had to do with some some portal jumps
- 1:10:08after pry was let go and someone had to do with a lot of other
- 1:10:11factors. But your corner was a pretty
- 1:10:14weak position for us last year. And when you combine that with
- 1:10:19inconsistent pass rush, inability to get quarter on the
- 1:10:22quarterbacks on the ground and a cornerback room that was
- 1:10:26somewhat in disarray, that was a bad combination last year.
- 1:10:29And I feel like that's been shored up this year.
- 1:10:34I'll let Tally jump in if he's got anything before I go with my
- 1:10:36next my next one here. No, man, I mean, look at Robbie.
- 1:10:43Hey, you know what I want to say, don't you, Curtis?
- 1:10:49You can thank, you can thank Chris Lester for the for the
- 1:10:52IBM. Hey, all I'm going to say is
- 1:10:55Chris, don't let it happen, buddy.
- 1:10:59Don't we want it to happen? But Chris, when you watch this,
- 1:11:03don't let it happen, my friend. I just got thrown off.
- 1:11:06Thanks, Robin. Thanks.
- 1:11:08Robin, just do the curveball. To you, Yeah.
- 1:11:10It just hit me under the curveball.
- 1:11:11I don't even know what I'm, what I'm thinking about.
- 1:11:13Maybe. I'm talking about corners and
- 1:11:14safeties. Corners and safeties, man, I'll
- 1:11:19be him. I'll be him, man.
- 1:11:20We need to see what he got. We need to see what he got this
- 1:11:24year, which I again going back to those rooms.
- 1:11:28It is it Curtis was hitting me up whenever all the, you know,
- 1:11:33transfer portal and everything was going on like when you take
- 1:11:36no safeties. What's going on?
- 1:11:38So, Rob. Was really mad about it.
- 1:11:40Rob kept screaming. We got a spot.
- 1:11:42Yeah, yeah. Good woman.
- 1:11:43What are we doing here? You know what I'm saying?
- 1:11:45So I am interested to see like what kind of moving around
- 1:11:49they're doing because there's a lot of talent on the back end.
- 1:11:53It's just young. But who takes that step to get
- 1:11:58on the field? You know, this is the first step
- 1:12:01that we see somebody take a step to be like, OK, well, maybe we
- 1:12:05see him get on the field because you started to see certain
- 1:12:07stuff, you know, in past spring games at positions like that.
- 1:12:12Even in the spring game, you could see like, Josh Clark, you
- 1:12:15know, was a little bit more developed than some of the other
- 1:12:18people that came in with him. Then he gets hurt.
- 1:12:21So yeah, man, I'm excited. I'm excited just to just to see
- 1:12:29who steps on the field and ain't got a what's the hurt jersey
- 1:12:31Brian? What is it blue or yellow?
- 1:12:33Red. Yeah, blue who don't got no blue
- 1:12:36jerseys on. That's what we need to see all.
- 1:12:39Right, Brian, I know you got. A a yeah, I'll jump in next
- 1:12:47because you know the one. Yeah, this is kind of a little
- 1:12:49bit of a of a playoff of off of Curtis's a little bit.
- 1:12:54And you know, to to another point, you know, we're we're
- 1:12:59going to talk about a little bit yet another one and you want to
- 1:13:02see the secondary, you want to see linebacker.
- 1:13:04So we'll talk about linebacker in in safety here in particular
- 1:13:07and kind of the interplay between those positions because
- 1:13:11you know, when you talk about a, you know, potentially A3 safety,
- 1:13:16look, you talk about linebacker play, there's going to be a lot
- 1:13:20of interplay between safety and linebacker, lot of run respond,
- 1:13:26run support responsibility in there.
- 1:13:28So I'm interested to see how that works because that's
- 1:13:31definitely been something that we have struggled with the last
- 1:13:34few years is, you know, we had this big run where the
- 1:13:38linebackers weren't getting getting the right gap.
- 1:13:41We had some these are some hanging fit situations with some
- 1:13:45of those those players coming up in in run support there.
- 1:13:49And there was a lot of big plays, big run plays that kind
- 1:13:54of came off of that. And and that was a that was a
- 1:13:57pretty big problem. Some I'm interested to see with
- 1:14:02you, a mostly veteran linebacker room, even though it's still a
- 1:14:06little young and some spots there in a in a somewhat young
- 1:14:10safety room, with the exception of of Q Reddish there.
- 1:14:14I think, you know, you look at that.
- 1:14:15I want to see how that works. Is that looking a lot better
- 1:14:20than what we've seen kind of the last three seasons?
- 1:14:25Yeah, it it it will be interesting to see how they work
- 1:14:28together, what that room just looks like in general because
- 1:14:31of, you know, prize the coach now.
- 1:14:33I mean, So what you want to say 0 excuses?
- 1:14:37It is yours right now. All right, Tally, I know you got
- 1:14:43one more thing. Tally's one big last thing.
- 1:14:49Well, I don't know how I feel about that.
- 1:14:54Yeah. No comment.
- 1:14:56No comment on that when you return.
- 1:14:58We had a very, we, we were number one in returning
- 1:15:00production two years ago. When we saw how that worked out,
- 1:15:04immediately Vanderbilt kicked us in the ass and that returning
- 1:15:08production didn't matter so much anymore.
- 1:15:10So I, I think it's something to, to look at as you've got guys
- 1:15:16that have done it that have a lot of snaps.
- 1:15:19So you, you, you get it from that perspective.
- 1:15:23And you're hoping that Franklin and all the other guys on the
- 1:15:26staff are leveling that up because while the returning
- 1:15:31production is good, a lot of it wasn't up to the level that we
- 1:15:35needed to win last year. So if they're not leveling up or
- 1:15:38we don't have guys that are coming in or challenging below
- 1:15:41them to make them better or jumping them on the depth chart,
- 1:15:45then that returning production doesn't matter quite as much.
- 1:15:49What I will say a little bit different than what we've had in
- 1:15:51the past, which we all noticed, we got to go real deep into it.
- 1:15:56You got Watchmen watching the Watchmen now, you know what I'm
- 1:15:59saying. You got offensive line coach,
- 1:16:02assistant, offensive line coach, assistant to the assistant in
- 1:16:07the weight room. You got each group has a coach
- 1:16:14watching them. It's not one guy, you know what
- 1:16:17I'm saying? So that I think that's going to
- 1:16:19play the staff additions is going to play a big role in what
- 1:16:25the team can do because you're going to have more eyes on
- 1:16:29certain groups and they got an answer to more people.
- 1:16:33You know, this guy's got to answer this guy.
- 1:16:34This guy's got to answer checks and balance system.
- 1:16:37So I think you're going to see more guys like, hey, he ain't
- 1:16:39getting it done. What's going on with him?
- 1:16:42He say his foot hurt. OK, go with the next guy.
- 1:16:44You know what I'm saying? I think you'll see more of that
- 1:16:46stuff. So I think the returning
- 1:16:48production thing will help this year because you'll have a staff
- 1:16:54that's more attentive than prize staff.
- 1:16:58But back to what Curtis asked just with my my final point to
- 1:17:05make on the spring game kind of puts a bow on everything for me
- 1:17:09is the optics of the spring game and the residual of what you get
- 1:17:13from that. Because what is the spring game
- 1:17:17like? What, what, why do you have a
- 1:17:19spring game? You, you, you want to, you want
- 1:17:22to evaluate where your team is. You want to you just got married
- 1:17:27and you're throwing a dinner party.
- 1:17:28You just got married and moved into a new house and you're
- 1:17:30throwing a dinner party. You want to show off your house,
- 1:17:33show off your wife or husband, whatever you decided to marry at
- 1:17:36that point, we don't judge. So now you're showing that off
- 1:17:42and you want everybody to perceive it in a in a in the the
- 1:17:45right fashion. So what kind of recruits are
- 1:17:48going to be at this game? What caliber recruits are going
- 1:17:52to be at this game? What kind of recruits do you get
- 1:17:56to commit? Because they came to this game
- 1:17:58and seen the atmosphere, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:18:00What kind of atmosphere will the fans have?
- 1:18:04Are they down on the program? Are they feeling good about the
- 1:18:08new regime? I'm going to be interested to
- 1:18:11see the residuals of what that game brings more than like the
- 1:18:15results of what happens on the field.
- 1:18:18Because we know none of that really matters, but what really
- 1:18:22matters is the things that we can see if Brian comes back or
- 1:18:26next week, shameless plug when y'all call in because we will be
- 1:18:30having a call in show after the game next week when y'all call
- 1:18:34in and tell me and Curtis about how great it was and the
- 1:18:38atmosphere was electric and. Y'all rubbing it in like Brian's
- 1:18:41going to be. Yeah, that's what, that's what I
- 1:18:44want to know. That's what I want to know.
- 1:18:46I want to know what is the vibe, You know what I'm saying?
- 1:18:49That kind of sounds kiddish, but what is the vibe that you got
- 1:18:54when you was at the game? Because that's what this is
- 1:18:58about. That's what Franklin's been
- 1:19:01pumping, that he wants this thing sold out.
- 1:19:04Why do you want it sold out? You don't want you don't want it
- 1:19:07sold out to to show some shit, right?
- 1:19:10You know what I'm saying? So I want to know what the vibes
- 1:19:14is going to be. I want to know what the residual
- 1:19:16is going to show up. Like how many commits can we get
- 1:19:18from that? How many recruits are going to
- 1:19:20show up? Where are they coming from?
- 1:19:22So we got a lot riding on it for a spring game for us.
- 1:19:26We got a lot riding on. And if we know anything about
- 1:19:28James Franklin, he is going to bring media to him.
- 1:19:32You damn it. There's going to be some
- 1:19:35national people going to be covering it.
- 1:19:37They're going to want to see what Virginia Tech looks like.
- 1:19:39They're going to see all James Franklin's first time running
- 1:19:42out to in a Sandman. So yes, Robbie, it will be
- 1:19:46televised. Curtis, what you said was it,
- 1:19:49it's. Going to be ACC Extra Network,
- 1:19:52ACCXN, so if you've got Hulu or you got ESPN out, it'll be there
- 1:19:57at 3:00. Look who is joining us.
- 1:20:00From the West Coast. They said Nova.
- 1:20:02I was going. To.
- 1:20:06Put that up there too, because we we.
- 1:20:09We got to talk about it, man, because I still in tally, you
- 1:20:14could probably talk like you've got the city of Nashville.
- 1:20:17That's like one of the best cities probably in the country
- 1:20:21for like going out and celebrate something and you get, you know,
- 1:20:27a a lovely night before that. Everybody's high, everybody's
- 1:20:30doing their thing, everybody's excited for the season.
- 1:20:33And then you go and watch that three hours stomach ache and
- 1:20:36it's enough to not even want to like you got all this stuff at
- 1:20:39your disposal. You're like, I don't even feel
- 1:20:40like going out and doing anything.
- 1:20:42Let's go back to, all right, Brian, since you want to do this
- 1:20:45to me. We didn't have to do this, but
- 1:20:46that's what you want to do, Grace, and you want to talk
- 1:20:50about that. So let's go back and talk about
- 1:20:52it. Like you said, great night out.
- 1:20:56Yeah, yeah, great night out. You know, you go out, have some
- 1:21:01drinks, chill with your people, take some pictures.
- 1:21:04I have people downtown Nashville hollering them.
- 1:21:07Hey, Tally, what's up, man? Where's Brian?
- 1:21:09Where's Curtis? You know, we got people all over
- 1:21:12that watch the show. I'm getting to meet.
- 1:21:15Cool night out, man, great night out.
- 1:21:17I was by myself. My wife ended up getting COVID
- 1:21:20and couldn't go with me. So I was by myself, had the
- 1:21:23hotel room by myself. I was in there sleeping naked,
- 1:21:25snoring, all of that good stuff, You know what I'm saying?
- 1:21:28Had a great night, right? You go to the game, tailgate,
- 1:21:33great, everybody's together. We still taking pictures, high
- 1:21:36five and oh man, we going to put the world on notice.
- 1:21:38Beat this SEC team. It's going to be great.
- 1:21:42Half the stadium is under construction.
- 1:21:46You can't go around certain ways.
- 1:21:47You got to go the other way, which was some BS.
- 1:21:51You get in the game and it's like 1000°.
- 1:21:55I'm pretty sure somebody had a heat stroke.
- 1:21:59Like somebody walked a couple people walking to the car.
- 1:22:02So we got people having heat strokes.
- 1:22:06Not only did we lose the game, we were getting beat and I was
- 1:22:11like, OK, well, it's over. You know, again, we laid an egg.
- 1:22:15No, no, no, no, no. We wanted to come back and hang
- 1:22:19around and make us think we can win.
- 1:22:22You know, we can feel like we got an opportunity to to win
- 1:22:25this game. And then what do we do?
- 1:22:28And true, the penny tech fashion, we lose a heartbreaker
- 1:22:32in overtime. In overtime, that's what
- 1:22:36happened in in Nashville. Like Brian said, one of the
- 1:22:42greatest cities in America to go out and have a good time.
- 1:22:46Who want to go out after that? I didn't want to go out.
- 1:22:50I met Chris. I was like, Chris, I don't
- 1:22:53really want to see you because I just want to go.
- 1:22:56I want to go home. I wanted to get in my car and
- 1:22:59drive home. It was about it's only. 2 1/2
- 1:23:01hours you could have. I wanted to get in my car and
- 1:23:03drive home, but I had already paid for that hotel room.
- 1:23:06So I met Chris. We went and got something to
- 1:23:08eat. I think we ate a little Mexican
- 1:23:09restaurant. Didn't even want to talk about
- 1:23:11the game because it was a horrible day and horrible night
- 1:23:16because of what happened during that game.
- 1:23:18And Brian, I put that out of my mind.
- 1:23:20It was two years ago and you brought it back up.
- 1:23:23Hey, man, I, I, I mentioned it just a little bit.
- 1:23:26Grayson threw it out there. And I mean, and to his point, I
- 1:23:28mean, it was that was one of the worst game experiences I've ever
- 1:23:35had from a stadium standpoint, a heat standpoint and an outcome
- 1:23:40standpoint, like all of it was. Bad.
- 1:23:45Curtis absolutely all of it. Why we why we own it.
- 1:23:48What is the worst game you've ever attended?
- 1:23:52The worst game I've ever detected like.
- 1:23:54You feeling like just drained when you left 2014 Georgia?
- 1:24:03Tech Fuqua, who has went come on a couple times, talked wrestling
- 1:24:09me and him drove up for the day, good seats.
- 1:24:13That's when like had the kind of game under control or was
- 1:24:17driving and remember brewing through that interception was on
- 1:24:21the out route like we were driving probably we score a
- 1:24:24touchdown, we win and we turn it over right there.
- 1:24:27Paul Johnson gets it. We don't ever touch the ball
- 1:24:29again. And we could hear we were
- 1:24:33walking underneath North End zone like that.
- 1:24:35That was one of the only times I've ever left the game where it
- 1:24:38wasn't a blowout and the game was still going on.
- 1:24:40I mean, we heard the final whistle as we were walking
- 1:24:43through North End zone. That was the worst game because
- 1:24:46we should have won that game. We should have won that game.
- 1:24:51Not even Purdue, although Purdue makes me mad, but Georgia Tech,
- 1:24:57that one back in 2014 hit hard, you know, because you because
- 1:25:05you know, you're sitting there. And again, it was just you.
- 1:25:10You lost that field goal when you could have easily won that
- 1:25:13game. Thinking about all the
- 1:25:16heartaches. Look at everybody, Ted.
- 1:25:19Go ahead and put them in here, man.
- 1:25:21Put them in here. What's?
- 1:25:21Going on, put them. In experience, I'll tell y'all
- 1:25:25mine while we own it. One of them.
- 1:25:28Hold on, hold on, let's hit a couple here.
- 1:25:29So the Michigan game, well, I don't know, National
- 1:25:34championship is just different though.
- 1:25:35I mean, that's a different feel. I remember that I I wasn't
- 1:25:40there, but I don't remember this watching this one.
- 1:25:44Tyler, look up. What we got, probably.
- 1:25:47Was at the BTECU game down at Charlotte that one it was like
- 1:25:511310. Robin said he had heat stroke
- 1:25:54there, too. I didn't want it in Nashville
- 1:25:56all. Right.
- 1:25:57So Nashville wasn't the worst. What was the worst?
- 1:26:01Nashville was pretty bad, but I think the worst that I've ever
- 1:26:04felt leaving the Virginia Tech game.
- 1:26:06I think it was 2019. Duke versus Virginia Tech in
- 1:26:11black. Well, you went to the Friday
- 1:26:13game. It was.
- 1:26:14It was bad. Let me tell you how bad that
- 1:26:16was, Curtis. Let me tell you how bad that
- 1:26:18well first. Of all, you have never discerned
- 1:26:20that you went to that game. Yeah, I want to.
- 1:26:23I don't want to talk about it. That's how bad it was.
- 1:26:26We have known you for six years now and you have never disclosed
- 1:26:30this until. That's the game they ran.
- 1:26:32The fake. Maybe we.
- 1:26:32Were drunk, you did, but. That's the game.
- 1:26:36They ran the fake field on us, right?
- 1:26:38They destroyed us. They beat our asses on that
- 1:26:41Friday night. It wasn't even the game.
- 1:26:42Yeah, so I went so I went hung out with my whenever I tell you
- 1:26:46I went to I stayed in Princeton, WV for that game.
- 1:26:52So I went in whenever I talk about being in West Virginia,
- 1:26:54which is a not a not nowhere that I need to be visiting.
- 1:27:00I went to go visit my boy Mike. Big drink if y'all don't know.
- 1:27:03Him. I know, Big drink.
- 1:27:04So yeah, so I went to visit him. We rode to the game together and
- 1:27:08that game was so bad. Mike, he was driving and we
- 1:27:13drove back to Mason. He would not turn on the radio,
- 1:27:17he wouldn't turn on the air, the heat windows down and nobody
- 1:27:21could speak. We just was riding in silence
- 1:27:24all the way back home. That's how bad it was.
- 1:27:27It was horrible. It was just the feeling because
- 1:27:29you knew right then I think we may have been like 2 and 1 going
- 1:27:33into that game or somewhere, but you knew that the wheels had
- 1:27:38fallen off. You knew it was at that point it
- 1:27:41was done like it's nothing. We, we, we don't got nothing,
- 1:27:45you know what I'm saying? It was pitiful.
- 1:27:48Look at Phil throwing this one. Up Oh, they throwing them all
- 1:27:51up. Look at this, look at this, look
- 1:27:53at this, look at. Look how we feeling.
- 1:27:55Man, we need some. We need some deep cuts here bro.
- 1:27:59We need some new memories, some new good memories.
- 1:28:02We do. You know what?
- 1:28:04You said we got to get some new good.
- 1:28:05Memories, by the way. Nobody ever needs to visit me.
- 1:28:10I was there. I was there, Robin, and I felt
- 1:28:14like, listen, man, I'm from Alabama and I've looked like
- 1:28:17this my whole life. So.
- 1:28:20I've been in some tough spots but Princeton WV had me
- 1:28:23questioned and like are they going to butt rap me?
- 1:28:31What's about to happen? What's about?
- 1:28:33To happen. And I walked in a Walmart.
- 1:28:36You know how Walmart be? You know what I'm saying?
- 1:28:39You run into some people in Walmart and you have no shoes
- 1:28:43on, no teeth. Man, you see, you see all types
- 1:28:46of folks and then. Back with Mohawks, all type of
- 1:28:49stuff. You do that.
- 1:28:51Yeah, it was great. But that game, that Duke game,
- 1:28:54the way I feel, I left for jeans.
- 1:28:59That and Duke in 2019. I kind of didn't want to be a
- 1:29:04Virginia Tech fan no more after that.
- 1:29:06I really thought about coming home and buying an Auburn hat,
- 1:29:12but you didn't, sorry. And somehow you stuck with it.
- 1:29:15Somehow you stuck with it. Stuck with it.
- 1:29:18Blood for punishment man. I'm just stick with it.
- 1:29:23We want that might be a summertime episode to get like
- 1:29:26bring people on and let them share the miserable experiences
- 1:29:30because we've all we've all, we've all felt them.
- 1:29:32So this is a, this is a good night, but hopefully there's
- 1:29:37more good memories in the future because Lord knows what we went
- 1:29:43through roughly the last 10 years.
- 1:29:47Come on, Lord, please, please, like just like 3 good seasons,
- 1:29:53just just three good seasons. That's all I'm asking for.
- 1:29:57Lord, I know I can't stay here, for I know I ain't going to stay
- 1:30:00here forever. But while I'm here, just let me
- 1:30:01see some good Virginia Tech football.
- 1:30:05We got spoiled. We got spoiled.
- 1:30:07All righty. Anything breaking did.
- 1:30:09Did James Franklin retweet that? He's going to follow my format.
- 1:30:14I seen that come across the board.
- 1:30:16Not yet, all right. He's paying attention clearly,
- 1:30:20all right. But with that being said,
- 1:30:21appreciate y'all in the chat tonight.
