Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Trump still surprises with sketchy schemes
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So last night, during Trump's big flop of an address,
- 0:03Speaker 1: someone very important was missing. A trusted person in Trump's
- 0:06Speaker 1: circle who is usually present for all of his speeches.
- 0:10Speaker 1: It is easy to miss because it's the sort of
- 0:12Speaker 1: the nature of his job to go unnoticed. And I'm talking,
- 0:15Speaker 1: of course, about Trump's personal teleprompter operator, a guy named
- 0:19Speaker 1: Gabriel Perez, who Trump reportedly found in twenty sixteen after
- 0:23Speaker 1: someone on his campaign googled the word teleprompters. I'm really
- 0:28Speaker 1: not kidding on that now. The reason why mister pres
- 0:30Speaker 1: was not the one scrolling through Trump's scripted remarks is
- 0:33Speaker 1: because he is currently under investigation forget this, allegedly making
- 0:37Speaker 1: more than one hundred thousand dollars placing bets on the
- 0:40Speaker 1: Kelshi prediction market, specifically on what Trump would say in
- 0:45Speaker 1: his speeches, speeches that a teleprompter operator would most certainly
- 0:50Speaker 1: have early access to. Now, we try our best on
- 0:53Speaker 1: the show to track and call out the corruption in
- 0:55Speaker 1: Trump's orbit, but I got to say, we didn't have
- 0:58Speaker 1: the White House teleprompter guy allegedly hashing in this way
- 1:01Speaker 1: on our list of people to just pay close attention to. Now,
- 1:05Speaker 1: who this shouldn't surprise, however, is Donald Trump himself because
- 1:08Speaker 1: one of his latest business ventures is taking is profiting
- 1:12Speaker 1: off of insider information to new heights. This was the
- 1:15Speaker 1: headline in the Financial Times today. Trump Media pitched one
- 1:19Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars monthly fee for fast feed of president's posts.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Donald Trump's social media company has reportedly discussed charging traders
- 1:27Speaker 1: and investors a whopping one hundred thousand dollars a month
- 1:31Speaker 1: for faster access to posts from top truth social accounts,
- 1:34Speaker 1: including those from Trump. The very posts where he announces
- 1:38Speaker 1: his latest decisions and everything from the Iran war to
- 1:41Speaker 1: global trade to now he's feeling about any particular issue.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Information that Trump Media describes as having the ability to
- 1:47Speaker 1: move financial markets. And if you're thinking, how the hell
- 1:52Speaker 1: is this legal? How can the president sell priority access
- 1:55Speaker 1: to decisions so consequential to the American people and the world.
- 1:59Speaker 1: While I'm not even the slightest but sure, but I
- 2:02Speaker 1: do have the perfect person to ask joining me now,
- 2:04Speaker 1: as Democratic Congressman and constitutional scholar Jamie Raskin. Okay, Congressman,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I just want to start with this Financial Times reporting.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I mean, Donald Trump holds a majority stake in Trump Media,
- 2:15Speaker 1: which means he personally could profit from selling this special access,
- 2:18Speaker 1: which we know doesn't bother him a bit. I wish
- 2:22Speaker 1: to add, we're talking about milliseconds here, but this feels
- 2:26Speaker 1: like a huge deal in the financial world. Is this legal?
- 2:29Speaker 1: How what can be done about it?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well, it's obviously misuse of government resources, and it is
- 2:36Speaker 2: against the law also to run a business from government property,
- 2:41Speaker 2: government offices, and that's exactly what he's doing. The whole
- 2:47Speaker 2: trade of the Trump administration is insider trading. That's what
- 2:52Speaker 2: their business is. The whole government under them is a
- 2:55Speaker 2: massive profit making enterprise, and what they trade on is
- 2:59Speaker 2: their power, their insider knowledge. And now they want to
- 3:02Speaker 2: formalize that by saying, if you give them I can't
- 3:05Speaker 2: remember what the numbers were, was at one hundred thousand
- 3:07Speaker 2: dollars a month, Yeah, then you would get the presidential
- 3:09Speaker 2: word first, so you can make the same early inside
- 3:13Speaker 2: stock investments that the President's going to make in order
- 3:16Speaker 2: to exploit his soon to come statements about those companies
- 3:22Speaker 2: and about how they're such a great investment, and indeed
- 3:24Speaker 2: he'll be channeling government resources towards them too. I mean,
- 3:28Speaker 2: that is the name of the game. They've converted the
- 3:31Speaker 2: whole government into a for profit enterprise, and it shows
- 3:34Speaker 2: they're not interested in waking up every day and saying,
- 3:36Speaker 2: how are we going to healthcare to American people, or
- 3:38Speaker 2: how are we going to solve the climate catastrophe that
- 3:42Speaker 2: is bearing down on us? So we're breathing unbreathable air. No,
- 3:45Speaker 2: they're looking at more ways that they can rip off
- 3:48Speaker 2: the public.
- 3:49Speaker 1: That seems to be their top priority on their every
- 3:52Speaker 1: day to do list. Let's start to the speech last night,
- 3:55Speaker 1: because I haven't talked to you about this yet. I mean,
- 3:57Speaker 1: clearly we know his goal is so doubt in our
- 3:59Speaker 1: left systems and well, the overall response was an ie roll. Unsurprisingly,
- 4:05Speaker 1: did gen up parts of his base who already believe
- 4:07Speaker 1: his election lies and who now claim the speech provides
- 4:10Speaker 1: a basis for Trump to enact the Insurrection Act. Well,
- 4:14Speaker 1: what's your overall reacts with the speech? And is that
- 4:16Speaker 1: something that we should all be preparing for and thinking about.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I mean, the people who believe that nonsense or who
- 4:25Speaker 2: are prepared to believe that nonsense are a set, finite
- 4:29Speaker 2: minority of the American people. So it's like a religious
- 4:33Speaker 2: cult leader who decides to go on national TV to
- 4:35Speaker 2: spin out some wild conspiracy theories or theological fantasies, and
- 4:41Speaker 2: nobody's buying it, and everybody rolls their eyes, and the
- 4:43Speaker 2: people who want to hear it, you know they've already
- 4:47Speaker 2: gotten it. So it was complete Dollsville for America last night.
- 4:53Speaker 2: It was an especially bad speech. The president has done
- 4:56Speaker 2: much better work than this, but this really hits a rock,
- 5:00Speaker 2: I would say. And I'm hearing some funny submissions for
- 5:04Speaker 2: names for this speech, including the Pettysburg Address, and some
- 5:08Speaker 2: people are saying, I have a scheme, you know, I'm
- 5:12Speaker 2: thinking more. He's taken Roosevelt's first inaugural address where he
- 5:16Speaker 2: said we have nothing to fear but fear itself, and
- 5:19Speaker 2: just turning into we have nothing but fear, and that's
- 5:22Speaker 2: all he's spreading here. But it's boring. At this time,
- 5:26Speaker 2: we know exactly what he's up to, and we are
- 5:29Speaker 2: mobilized all over the country at every level of government
- 5:32Speaker 2: to counter their attempts to steal the election or derail
- 5:35Speaker 2: the election.
- 5:37Speaker 1: We also know he either didn't read or didn't understand
- 5:41Speaker 1: the documents that he was releasing that he announced he
- 5:44Speaker 1: was releasing, because as I just did an overview over
- 5:46Speaker 1: at the top of the show. A lot of them
- 5:48Speaker 1: contradicted things that he actually said in the speech, And
- 5:51Speaker 1: I want to ask you about some of that because
- 5:52Speaker 1: you were a ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee
- 5:54Speaker 1: during the Russia investigation. I'm sure you saw that one
- 5:57Speaker 1: of the documents that Trumpty classified and released yesterday as
- 6:02Speaker 1: part of a so called smoking gun for Chinese meddling
- 6:05Speaker 1: actually showed that in twenty twenty was Russia who tried
- 6:08Speaker 1: the most to penetrate American election systems the most in
- 6:10Speaker 1: an effort to defeat Joe Biden. What'd you make of that?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Well, of course, remember back in twenty sixteen, Russia had
- 6:18Speaker 2: conducted not just an influence campaign, which means the propaganda
- 6:23Speaker 2: and disinformation and attempt to influence the public, but also
- 6:27Speaker 2: in actual interference campaign by breaking into the DNC's emails
- 6:33Speaker 2: and Hillary Clinton's emails, and it was far more aggressive.
- 6:37Speaker 2: In twenty twenty, they seemed to stick to the influence campaign,
- 6:44Speaker 2: and that was well documented. They were the major player,
- 6:47Speaker 2: and it was all on Donald Trump's behalf. They were
- 6:49Speaker 2: out there for him because of Donald Trump's well known
- 6:54Speaker 2: love and subservience to Vladimir Putin and Theussian position on
- 7:01Speaker 2: everything from NATO to Ukraine to you name it. So
- 7:05Speaker 2: Russia was on his side. The intelligence community assessment that
- 7:09Speaker 2: was released in March of twenty twenty one also showed
- 7:13Speaker 2: that in addition to Russia, Iran was out there, not
- 7:17Speaker 2: on Joe Biden's behalf, but just against Trump, saying negative
- 7:22Speaker 2: stuff about Trump. That's in there too, But there was
- 7:25Speaker 2: a conclusive finding by the intelligence community that neither Russia,
- 7:29Speaker 2: nor Iran, nor China or anybody else actually got to
- 7:32Speaker 2: the point of technical interference, meaning interfering with people's ability
- 7:37Speaker 2: to vote, or the counting of ballots, or the processing
- 7:40Speaker 2: of ballots or the release of results. It just didn't happen,
- 7:43Speaker 2: and Donald Trump had nothing to alter that conclusion last
- 7:47Speaker 2: night
