- 0:00Speaker 1: On the Bechdelcast, the questions asked if movies have women
- 0:04Speaker 1: and them, are all their discussions just boyfriends and husbands
- 0:08Speaker 1: or do they have individualism? It's the patriarchy, zeph and
- 0:12Speaker 1: best start changing it with the Bechdel Cast.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Go Go Podcast Rangers, Mighty Morphine Podcast Rangers, and.

- 0:33Speaker 3: I do feel like if I was a power Ranger,
- 0:35Speaker 3: I would also be a frog. Okay, I think I think,
- 0:39Speaker 3: do you what would be your animals? Have you thought
- 0:41Speaker 3: about this? I haven't give you've spent time of your
- 0:45Speaker 3: one human life thinking about this? No?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Maybe, like I mean, I love cats and I love
- 0:52Speaker 2: red pandas, and I love raccoons. Maybe it would be
- 0:55Speaker 2: like the raccoon Power Ranger.
- 0:57Speaker 3: That would be a cute one. I was I was
- 1:00Speaker 3: a frog kid. I was like, I think I think
- 1:03Speaker 3: I would stick with what works for me.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Tracks for you, Jamie.
- 1:07Speaker 3: What is that?
- 1:07Speaker 2: What do you mean when you say that it's a compliment?
- 1:11Speaker 3: Fucking freak there. No, It's just like every time I've
- 1:15Speaker 3: told someone, uh, I played the Obo in high school,
- 1:18Speaker 3: They've been like, yeah, that makes sense to me.
- 1:20Speaker 2: You're like sounds about rede.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Fuck you, that's a loser instrument. And we both know
- 1:26Speaker 3: everyone knows it. All right, all right, all right, I
- 1:29Speaker 3: can't get triggered. At the top of the Power Rangers episode, Uh,
- 1:32Speaker 3: we are covering Muddy morphin Sunny Sorry, Sonny's Barque at
- 1:38Speaker 3: the Wall. Okay, We are covering nineteen ninety fives Mighty
- 1:44Speaker 3: morphin Power Rangers du movie.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yes. Also, we are the Bechdel Cast. And my name's Caitlin.

- 1:55Speaker 3: we take a look at your favorite ooze covered movies

- 2:07Speaker 2: And we have an incredible returning guest joining us. He's
- 2:12Speaker 2: got a PhD in sociology okay and.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Being a teenager with attitude.
- 2:19Speaker 2: True. He's host of the Horror Agenda podcast, an aspiring screenwriter.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And you know him from our episode on Teenage Mutant
- 2:29Speaker 2: Ninja Turtles Secret of the Ooze. It's Carlos Camacho.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Hello, Hi, I'm not gonna take it personally, I'm back
- 2:38Speaker 4: for two Ooh's episodes.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Hey, you're our gooiest guest, Resident Ooz movie expert.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Resident Ooz is a good title for a movie.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Also, that's good.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Shut that down.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, let's let's write that.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Bob.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Thank you for returning to the show to unpack the
- 3:00Speaker 3: Power Rangers for us.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Again, just like, there's so much to talk about with
- 3:06Speaker 3: this movie and also with this franchise, So let's let's
- 3:11Speaker 3: just get right in. Yeah, what is your history with
- 3:15Speaker 3: the Power Rangers franchise?
- 3:19Speaker 4: Who? It's been central to my life for most of
- 3:24Speaker 4: my life at this point, literally grew up watching the show.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Saw I'm assuming I saw this movie in theaters. I
- 3:32Speaker 4: definitely saw Turbo in theaters and I was so wrapped
- 3:36Speaker 4: that my family ate like all the popcorn and I
- 3:39Speaker 4: was like, oh is there food? And they're like, you
- 3:40Speaker 4: didn't eat? And I was like, I was watching the movie.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I was distracted. I was focused. This is what you wanted.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Were none of you locked in?
- 3:50Speaker 4: They weren't. They weren't locked in. But yeah, I collected
- 3:54Speaker 4: the toys dressed up as a Power Ranger for Halloween.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I had the gloves that made a noise that you
- 4:01Speaker 4: hear so often in this movie, and I still have it.
- 4:06Speaker 4: I was telling Caitlin off Mike, I have a bookshelf.
- 4:09Speaker 4: I have a bookshelf with all of my PhD books, race, sexuality, gender,
- 4:14Speaker 4: all that stuff. And then on the top is my
- 4:16Speaker 4: Power Ranger shrine where I have the original Megazord, the
- 4:19Speaker 4: flip top head, Power Rangers, toys from the movie, stuff
- 4:24Speaker 4: from comic con are I'm that guy in my friend group,
- 4:28Speaker 4: They're like, turtles are Power Rangers. We know how to
- 4:31Speaker 4: pluck the nostalgia buttons of this guy.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I feel like everyone, everyone should have their comfort nostalgia
- 4:40Speaker 3: property that you're like, is it flawed? Sure, but it's fine.
- 4:45Speaker 3: It's fine. Okay, so you know the lore this is.
- 4:50Speaker 3: This is going to be a fun one. I'm excited.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I'm so excited.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Kitlin was your history with the Power Rangers.
- 4:57Speaker 2: So I was a big fan of the show. I
- 5:00Speaker 2: wasn't sure if I had seen this movie or not.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I was like, well, I'll watch it and I will
- 5:06Speaker 2: see if anything is familiar. Turns out it wasn't. As
- 5:09Speaker 2: I was prepping for this episode, so I was like, okay,
- 5:11Speaker 2: I have not seen this movie, but I've probably seen
- 5:13Speaker 2: every episode of the show, because my afternoons when I
- 5:18Speaker 2: got home from school as a kid were watching Power
- 5:21Speaker 2: Rangers and then VR Troopers. If anyone remembers that.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Show, No, what is that?
- 5:27Speaker 2: It's a similar show made by the same horrendous zionist.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Oh boy, we'll.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Talk about it. But I think it's three Virtual Reality
- 5:39Speaker 2: Troopers versus the six Power Rangers. But they just they
- 5:44Speaker 2: do similar things. They're like teens or young adults who
- 5:48Speaker 2: fight inter dimensional beings and stuff, and they have suits
- 5:53Speaker 2: and all that fun stuff.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I was really enjoying I found, of course, I found
- 5:57Speaker 3: a Power Rangers YouTuber. This is their lifecraft and they
- 6:04Speaker 3: were making fun of I guess an observation I had
- 6:08Speaker 3: also made. But I was like, oh, maybe it's different
- 6:09Speaker 3: than the TV show where he was like, so they're
- 6:12Speaker 3: teenagers with attitude, except they really don't have attitude, and
- 6:16Speaker 3: they really don't really transgress in any way. They're always nice.
- 6:20Speaker 3: They are not teenagers with attitude at all.
- 6:23Speaker 2: They don't have distinct personalities either, really at.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Least, which I think is for all of these reasons
- 6:31Speaker 3: that I didn't realize that are really interesting, where you're like,
- 6:35Speaker 3: we can't really have a character if we're constantly cutting
- 6:38Speaker 3: to a different person, possibly a decade ago, in a suit.
- 6:43Speaker 3: It's fascinating.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Okay, So my favorite parts of the show were Bulk
- 6:49Speaker 2: and Skull because the comic relief that they provided was
- 6:54Speaker 2: top notch when I was, you know, seven or whatever,
- 6:58Speaker 2: and I loved all the five the little robot assistant.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Those were the characters that I remembered the most. I
- 7:07Speaker 2: couldn't tell you a single plot line of any of
- 7:10Speaker 2: the episodes. I didn't even remember, like what the Rangers'
- 7:16Speaker 2: names were or anything like that. But I was like, Bulkan, Skull,
- 7:20Speaker 2: they're getting into some goofy little high jinks. They're having fun,
- 7:23Speaker 2: and then the little robot guy is going beeboop, and
- 7:28Speaker 2: I thought that stuff was awesome.
- 7:29Speaker 3: When I was a kid, I was like, the robot
- 7:31Speaker 3: I was calling in my notes definitely not C three
- 7:34Speaker 3: Po who works for definitely not the worzard of Oz
- 7:38Speaker 3: who when he gets sick, is definitely not nice Palpatine.
- 7:43Speaker 3: You're like, there's so many random visual references. I loved it.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yes, Jamie, what is your relationship with Power Rangers?
- 7:53Speaker 3: So I figured I would be a little different here
- 7:56Speaker 3: so I remember The Power Rangers being around, but as
- 7:59Speaker 3: a little too young to actually watch it. I remember
- 8:02Speaker 3: my older cousins who were really into it. I remember
- 8:07Speaker 3: them watching it. It was like I have, for some
- 8:10Speaker 3: reason associate Power Rangers with the WWE, because it was
- 8:14Speaker 3: something my older cousins could watch that I couldn't and
- 8:17Speaker 3: it involved fighting. So much of what I knew about
- 8:22Speaker 3: The Power Rangers was like secondhand information. They were sort
- 8:25Speaker 3: of forbidden to me, and then by the time I
- 8:28Speaker 3: was old enough to watch, they weren't really popular anymore.
- 8:31Speaker 3: And I think I just watched The Powerpuff Girls, which
- 8:33Speaker 3: is weirdly a similar premise where it's like superhero children
- 8:37Speaker 3: who work for a weird old man become a premise
- 8:41Speaker 3: as old as time. That's also Charlie's Angels, except their
- 8:44Speaker 3: grown ups anyways. So the only thing I really remember
- 8:49Speaker 3: outside of their like existence and like seeing the toys
- 8:52Speaker 3: around and stuff, was I remember, for some reason, Rita
- 8:55Speaker 3: Rapulsea had a really strong icon effect on me. I
- 9:00Speaker 3: both so it was such like a weird childhood sense
- 9:03Speaker 3: memory where I remember being like, she's so cool, but
- 9:06Speaker 3: she she and maybe this is me just projecting my
- 9:09Speaker 3: like her tagline, but I was like, but I remember
- 9:12Speaker 3: it was like, well oop, I associate her with having
- 9:14Speaker 3: a headache because her voice is very annoying but also
- 9:17Speaker 3: her but also her like catchphrases, I have a headache,
- 9:21Speaker 3: which is so I don't know if I don't know
- 9:23Speaker 3: what it was, but yeah, I don't. I didn't have
- 9:26Speaker 3: deep lore knowledge at all, and so I I guess
- 9:31Speaker 3: it's like I had some fun and I also just
- 9:33Speaker 3: learned a lot prepping for this episode, because there really
- 9:38Speaker 3: is just like Caitlin, you alluded to a huge reveal
- 9:44Speaker 3: that I didn't know because I was like, Sabon could
- 9:47Speaker 3: have meant absolutely anything in the world to me. We'll
- 9:50Speaker 3: talk about the creator, we'll talk about I mean, there's
- 9:52Speaker 3: just I feel like part of this movie is first
- 9:55Speaker 3: of all iconic, Like the bad guys are thrown against
- 9:57Speaker 3: a wall, they exploded to purple calm. You're like yeah,
- 10:01Speaker 3: You're like, yeah, You're like exactly. I love that. I
- 10:04Speaker 3: love when the random definitely not zena Warrior princess character
- 10:09Speaker 3: is like it's every every character in this movie is
- 10:12Speaker 3: definitely not another very popular character, but when she is,
- 10:15Speaker 3: like it's the thing of ultimate power. And then just
- 10:18Speaker 3: points to a gigantic like penis shaped rock and you're like, yeah,
- 10:22Speaker 3: the big throbbing cock of power, and then they get that,
- 10:26Speaker 3: like I just it was we're gonna talk about all
- 10:28Speaker 3: the controversies. And also I was laughing so much like
- 10:33Speaker 3: it's it's it's so like it's low rent in the
- 10:36Speaker 3: best way where they're like we're animals and then they
- 10:39Speaker 3: hike on foot the entire way like it's so silly.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I love it.
- 10:45Speaker 2: The budget was fifteen million dollars, and I'm like, did
- 10:48Speaker 2: you mean fifteen dollars? Because where did the money go?
- 10:52Speaker 3: I think it was to pay I think a lot
- 10:54Speaker 3: of it went to that the soundtrack. The soundtrack was
- 10:57Speaker 3: very expensive. And also I would guess I don't know,
- 11:00Speaker 3: but I bet that those like very now very dated,
- 11:04Speaker 3: like screensaver, PlayStation one effects at the end. We're expensive
- 11:09Speaker 3: at the time, even though it does look like PS one.
- 11:12Speaker 2: It was great. Yes, indeed, let's take a quick break
- 11:17Speaker 2: and then we'll come back for the recap.
- 11:19Speaker 6: Let's do it.
- 11:30Speaker 2: It's morph in time.
- 11:31Speaker 3: We're back, all right.
- 11:34Speaker 5: So.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Right, we panicked, we thought there was more, Okay, we
- 11:41Speaker 3: power now it's time.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I like that, like they'll be fighting in a battle
- 11:47Speaker 2: for so long and then finally they're like, Okay, let's
- 11:50Speaker 2: bust out our special powers. And it's like you had
- 11:53Speaker 2: these the whole time, Like why didn't you do it sooner?
- 11:56Speaker 3: I am very reasons, right, I'm I'm so fascinated by
- 12:01Speaker 3: like how Yeah, it just seems like by design and
- 12:05Speaker 3: it seems like merchandising by the design, and also because
- 12:08Speaker 3: of like how these adaptations had to work, Like these
- 12:10Speaker 3: characters cannot really have person or they can only have
- 12:13Speaker 3: personalities to a very specific point, and so I was like, Okay,
- 12:18Speaker 3: my robot chicken pitch for this is like what do
- 12:21Speaker 3: these kids talk about on the long Hike? I literally
- 12:24Speaker 3: cannot imagine a conversation about them that is not strictly
- 12:28Speaker 3: like okay, we're at the big penis what do we
- 12:30Speaker 3: do now? Like that's like they I would I would
- 12:33Speaker 3: love to know what they're what they're chatting about. I
- 12:35Speaker 3: guess they do. It seems like they do on the
- 12:37Speaker 3: TV show, right, Do they have parents?
- 12:38Speaker 4: Like yes, from what I remember from the show, the
- 12:42Speaker 4: parents are very much not involved. Like you have a
- 12:45Speaker 4: guest episode where I think it's Halloween and the parents
- 12:48Speaker 4: get kidnapped into some like alternate dimension. There's an episode
- 12:52Speaker 4: in I think the first season when the original cast
- 12:55Speaker 4: was still there where Treeny's uncle comes by and bonds
- 12:59Speaker 4: with Billy over like science and nerd stuff because he's
- 13:02Speaker 4: like really good at martial arts like Trainy, but then
- 13:05Speaker 4: also good at like brainiac things like Billy, and so
- 13:07Speaker 4: there's sort of like a meeting of the minds there.
- 13:10Speaker 4: But yeah, this is very much kids with no adults
- 13:13Speaker 4: around other than like they have a home to go
- 13:15Speaker 4: back to, but their parents are never concerned about them
- 13:17Speaker 4: skipping school, doing anything or perhaps appearing on the news
- 13:22Speaker 4: involved in shenanigans, just like don't care.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Again, one of the iconic things where they're like, no
- 13:29Speaker 3: one can know, but then it's like everyone knows, including Fred.
- 13:34Speaker 3: The child's the most nineties kid to ever nineties It's true.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Okay, here is the recap. It is one of the
- 13:45Speaker 2: shortest recaps I've ever written, because there is because there's
- 13:48Speaker 2: almost no plot to this movie.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Oh yeah, but so much happens. Yeah, yes, they're like
- 13:55Speaker 3: I guess it is mostly and then they're fighting these guys,
- 13:57Speaker 3: and then they're fighting these guys, and then they there's
- 14:00Speaker 3: a secret dinosaur bone that kills the dinosaur.
- 14:06Speaker 2: It's a lot of like characters showing up somewhere and
- 14:10Speaker 2: then fighting, yeah, and then moving to a second location
- 14:13Speaker 2: and then fighting some more. But at the beginning we
- 14:16Speaker 2: get a very Star Warsian opening exposition crawl and we
- 14:23Speaker 2: learn about an interdimensional being named Zordon who came to
- 14:30Speaker 2: the city of Angel Grove, California question mark, I think
- 14:35Speaker 2: so and established a command center where he his assistant
- 14:41Speaker 2: Alpha five, the little robot guy who I love, and
- 14:45Speaker 2: a group of six teenagers work together to fight evil.
- 14:51Speaker 2: And these teens called the Mighty Morphine Power Rangers can
- 14:57Speaker 2: transform into these or I don't know. I don't think
- 15:00Speaker 2: it's them transforming, but they're able to like summon these
- 15:04Speaker 2: like planes and other machinery.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Yeah, Carlos you how does how does it work?
- 15:12Speaker 4: So there's a well, first off, the film is non
- 15:15Speaker 4: canonical to the show, like you find it right in
- 15:18Speaker 4: that like exposition dump because in the original series, Zordam
- 15:23Speaker 4: picks five teenagers. The sixth teenager is a surprise and
- 15:26Speaker 4: he's initially evil and his arc is where the Green
- 15:30Speaker 4: Ranger comes tries to destroy them, becomes a good guy
- 15:34Speaker 4: and loses his powers because he's like tied to Rita's
- 15:37Speaker 4: green candle. It's a whole thing.
- 15:40Speaker 3: So it's like, ok, and we all know Rita's grain candle.
- 15:45Speaker 3: I really enjoyed. I watched a bunch of like you know,
- 15:48Speaker 3: those like cannon summary videos and the Green I mean,
- 15:52Speaker 3: the Green Ranger story is compelling.
- 15:54Speaker 4: It's real good.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Yeah, so is that Tommy And then he becomes the
- 15:58Speaker 2: White Ranger. Mm hmm Okay.
- 16:00Speaker 4: So Alpha and zord On work in their basement. They
- 16:02Speaker 4: have a secret lab where they build the White Ranger
- 16:06Speaker 4: so that they can bring a new footage because, like
- 16:09Speaker 4: Jamie was saying, the show is originally spiced with like
- 16:12Speaker 4: very little US footage and a lot of like taking
- 16:16Speaker 4: Japanese footage. So it's like, oh, we ran out of
- 16:20Speaker 4: Super Sentai, Judah and Jef footage. Now we have to
- 16:22Speaker 4: switch to a different show. Because in the Super Sentai version,
- 16:26Speaker 4: which is like Japanese Power Rangers, each season was in
- 16:30Speaker 4: and of itself. It was like a one shot season,
- 16:32Speaker 4: so it's like the Power Rangers, then the Ninja Rangers,
- 16:35Speaker 4: then the spin like it was all different. In the US,
- 16:38Speaker 4: they like sewed it together because they're like they're not
- 16:40Speaker 4: gonna get rid of these guys and watch a new
- 16:42Speaker 4: show with all new people, which they eventually did later on,
- 16:45Speaker 4: where it's like, you've got the Mystic Rangers, You've got
- 16:47Speaker 4: the dyno Oh what is it? Dinoh Thunder comes back?
- 16:51Speaker 4: Like there's so many different seasons of Power Rangers only decades.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Brother, watch Dino Thunder. I think, okay, yeah, So for
- 17:00Speaker 3: listeners who aren't aware, because I did not know this,
- 17:02Speaker 3: this Power Rangers is a licensed adaptation, because I was
- 17:07Speaker 3: also worried that they just stole shit, but they so.
- 17:09Speaker 3: It is a licensed adaptation of a Javit show called
- 17:12Speaker 3: supercent Tie that goes back to the seventies that super villain,
- 17:17Speaker 3: real life supervillain Carl Saban had wanted to adapt in
- 17:21Speaker 3: the West, I think pretty early on into that series. Also,
- 17:24Speaker 3: stan Lee wanted to adapt it at some point, like damn,
- 17:27Speaker 3: that would have been cool, but wasn't able to get
- 17:30Speaker 3: it off the ground until the nineties. And so and
- 17:33Speaker 3: then what you said, Carlos, so much of the early
- 17:36Speaker 3: series is just the American teenagers taking off the helmet
- 17:40Speaker 3: and having a plot and then putting the helmet back on,
- 17:43Speaker 3: and then cut into footage from supercent Tie that could
- 17:46Speaker 3: be from god knows when kind.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Of right, yeah, and sometimes you can see that it
- 17:51Speaker 4: doesn't add up, like it's like very clearly filmed differently
- 17:55Speaker 4: because it's like film versus like whatever technology they were using.
- 17:59Speaker 4: It's just like are two different people.
- 18:01Speaker 3: It is so wild to think, yeah, like it's like
- 18:04Speaker 3: intercutting a movie from today with a movie from like
- 18:07Speaker 3: two thousand and seven. Like it's just bizarre.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Well, you know, who didn't notice me, my seven year
- 18:13Speaker 2: old ass brain?
- 18:14Speaker 3: Oh what I mean? Of course not. I think that Unfortunately,
- 18:19Speaker 3: you know, the producers of this show took a risk
- 18:21Speaker 3: on maybe kids are not media literate and they don't
- 18:25Speaker 3: give a fuck.
- 18:27Speaker 2: And and that risk paid off.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it's so interesting thinking about this like time of
- 18:32Speaker 3: like really aggressively I mean it still happens obviously, but
- 18:36Speaker 3: like really aggressively merchandised shows where the content is like
- 18:41Speaker 3: there's not much going on. It's just like we just
- 18:44Speaker 3: need enough plot to justify selling a toy, and it worked.
- 18:47Speaker 3: That was like the entire eighties and nineties, it felt like.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Anyway, so we get all this exposition about the Power
- 18:55Speaker 2: Rangers and their machines called zoos love it.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I wonder what it's a reference to.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Then we meet the Power Rangers as they're jumping out
- 19:10Speaker 2: of a plane and skydiving and then later rollerblading.
- 19:15Speaker 3: No explanation. Well, I guess there is an explanation. I
- 19:18Speaker 3: love this, just the Power Rangers and their bullies.
- 19:21Speaker 2: In the other they're hanging out to his friends almost
- 19:25Speaker 2: but we meet Billy the Blue Power Ranger, Kimberly the
- 19:30Speaker 2: Pink One, Adam the Black One, Aisha the Yellow One,
- 19:35Speaker 2: Rocky the Red One, and Tommy the White one, and
- 19:39Speaker 2: he seems to be kind of the leader of the group.
- 19:42Speaker 3: We know that because he's in the middle of the
- 19:45Speaker 3: poster and Fred says hey Tommy, and you're like, okay,
- 19:49Speaker 3: got it.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Also, there are the two bullies from the show, Bulk
- 19:56Speaker 2: and Skull.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Iconic, and they do their bullies are like thirty five yes,
- 20:04Speaker 3: love it.
- 20:04Speaker 2: They're also completely inconsequential to the plot of the movie. Yeah,
- 20:09Speaker 2: to the point where you're like, why are they even
- 20:11Speaker 2: on screen?
- 20:12Speaker 3: But how dare you? I thought, I'm a fan.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I love so anyway we see them doing, you know,
- 20:22Speaker 2: extreme sports, the Power Rangers. Meanwhile, a large glowing orb
- 20:29Speaker 2: egg thing is discovered at a construction site, and it
- 20:33Speaker 2: seems to give off this evil energy, which Zordon is
- 20:39Speaker 2: able to sense using all of his evil sensing equipment
- 20:43Speaker 2: at the command center, so he summons the Power Rangers.
- 20:49Speaker 2: They I forgot this that they're able to teleport. They
- 20:52Speaker 2: have teleportation technology. Wow, And so they teleport to the
- 20:56Speaker 2: command center and Zordon, who is this like large disembodied
- 21:01Speaker 2: Wizard of Oz's head.
- 21:03Speaker 3: But nice, like he's the Wizard of Oz but nice
- 21:06Speaker 3: and Palpatine but.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Nice, and yes he looks like Palpatine. And he tells
- 21:11Speaker 2: them that an evil interdimensional being named ivan Ooz has
- 21:18Speaker 2: returned after many millennia And.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Just checking Carlos, is this a new character at the time? Okay,
- 21:26Speaker 3: I didn't know if ivan Ooz was already Cannon. I
- 21:29Speaker 3: just know that I love him.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Ooz is new.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Mordant, the guy like the pig man who's hanging out
- 21:36Speaker 4: with Goldar, is new because some of the characters from
- 21:39Speaker 4: the original series are like face characters in the Japanese footage,
- 21:44Speaker 4: so they can't necessarily translate them in the same way.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I guess do you get Rita and Z coming back?
- 21:50Speaker 4: Goldar comes back, but everybody else is like, there's no Finster,
- 21:53Speaker 4: no Squat, no Baboo, no Scorpoena, and then more dant
- 21:57Speaker 4: is there.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yes that we all no one loves O favorites.
- 22:03Speaker 3: I do, I do never read. I was glad Rita
- 22:05Speaker 3: was there, and then I was so sad that she
- 22:07Speaker 3: was instantly banished.
- 22:10Speaker 2: So rude. Yeah, okay. So Goldar is he this sort
- 22:13Speaker 2: of like gargoyle looking.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Like winged oh, the golden golden armor.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, that makes sense.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Yeah. I guess that the operating thing here is don't
- 22:25Speaker 3: think too hard and you'll probably get it right right.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Yeah, okay.
- 22:30Speaker 2: So back at the construction site, the main villains of
- 22:33Speaker 2: the Power Rangers, Rita, Rapulsa, and lord Z show up
- 22:39Speaker 2: with Goldar and then mister pig Man and they open
- 22:45Speaker 2: this egg and outcomes I've an ooze.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Oh and we're cheering. I love. It's too bad he's
- 22:55Speaker 3: not a canonical care and he never comes back.
- 22:58Speaker 4: No, no, there's even a link up of all of
- 23:01Speaker 4: the villains in the show when it'll become relevant later
- 23:05Speaker 4: when Jordan dies in the TV show and Ooz is
- 23:09Speaker 4: never there. The teng Goo are they Tenga or tango?
- 23:13Speaker 4: Because they change the name between the movie they're Tenga
- 23:15Speaker 4: on the show, they're tengu in the movie they come back,
- 23:18Speaker 4: but none no Ooz or the Uzi creature Purple guys.
- 23:23Speaker 3: That's too bad. I hate to hear that, because what
- 23:26Speaker 3: a character.
- 23:27Speaker 4: He's so great. He's probably one of the best parts
- 23:30Speaker 4: of the film. Like the standout.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I mean talk about let's let's just give not to
- 23:35Speaker 3: shout out a man right from the drum, but like, yeah.
- 23:40Speaker 4: I didn't say that.
- 23:42Speaker 3: We got a shout out mister Paul Freeman, who's just
- 23:45Speaker 3: like leaving it all on the field. Like it's who
- 23:49Speaker 3: I guess was most famous for playing Renee Bellock in
- 23:53Speaker 3: Raiders of the Lost Arc.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, that's him.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Which I haven't well, I have seen, but I don't
- 23:59Speaker 3: really remember very well. But yeah, that's I figured you
- 24:01Speaker 3: would like that.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I was just like, there's no way Ivan Ooze is
- 24:06Speaker 2: played by any actor who I would ever recognize from anything,
- 24:10Speaker 2: So I didn't even bother looking it up.
- 24:11Speaker 3: But he did such a good job. He really like,
- 24:15Speaker 3: I was taken. It's it's I think, far and away
- 24:18Speaker 3: the best performance in the movie by all, and it's
- 24:20Speaker 3: not even close. These kids couldn't see ivan Ooze with
- 24:24Speaker 3: it with the Hubble telescope. It's ridiculous.
- 24:28Speaker 4: And there's a telescope in the movie that's very very young.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Yeah, well, okay, I am shook to my core. I
- 24:35Speaker 2: can't believe he plays Belloch.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's wild, it's range, it's range. I also love
- 24:41Speaker 3: that this movie was there. Oh there's like one shot
- 24:44Speaker 3: because it's just so like sloppy and funny. This happens
- 24:46Speaker 3: a lot and lost as well. Where this movie was
- 24:49Speaker 3: shot in Australia and so sometimes people are randomly Australian
- 24:53Speaker 3: and your there's like this the I think it's like
- 24:55Speaker 3: a security guard who morphs in ivan Ooze and he's
- 24:58Speaker 3: like Hallia power right, and you're like, really the fuck
- 25:01Speaker 3: are we and then he just turns into Ivanues and
- 25:04Speaker 3: then you forget.
- 25:06Speaker 2: That's amazing. Okay, So we meet ivan oohs and Lord
- 25:12Speaker 2: z instructs him to kill Zordan and he's like happy
- 25:16Speaker 2: to do it. The Power Rangers then show up and
- 25:22Speaker 2: deal with the minions that ivan Ooze conjures before he
- 25:26Speaker 2: fucks off to somewhere else, and the Power Rangers are outnumbered,
- 25:31Speaker 2: so they invoke their mighty morphine powers and fight these
- 25:37Speaker 2: uze minions, and there's a lot of karate or some
- 25:43Speaker 2: similar type of martial art. There's a lot of goofy
- 25:46Speaker 2: sound effects. There's a lot of horrible puns. They have gadgets.
- 25:50Speaker 2: They have like Batman like gadgets that they're using.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Usually which I and correct me if I'm right. It
- 25:58Speaker 3: becomes a trend that usually Kimberly, Ayisha and sometimes Billy
- 26:04Speaker 3: are like damseled at some point in the fight, and
- 26:07Speaker 3: then it ends up being fine and they get to
- 26:09Speaker 3: kick someone before the end of the fight. But I
- 26:11Speaker 3: feel like Kimberly and Aysha in particular, you see them
- 26:14Speaker 3: be like, oh no, and then Tommy comes in or
- 26:18Speaker 3: the other one. I'm honestly shocked. I remember that many names.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Like why is that you should trapped here? Why is
- 26:27Speaker 4: I should trapped again? Kimberly screaming again? Why are we
- 26:30Speaker 4: doing this?
- 26:31Speaker 2: We'll talk about it.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Aysha is always alone. I'm like she's fighting by herself
- 26:36Speaker 3: in every scene.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yeah, well, well that's what that's what we'll talk about.
- 26:41Speaker 3: We're here for, Yeah, we come to this place.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Yes.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Also, the song that's happening on the soundtrack during this
- 26:48Speaker 2: fight scene, it's like action boy now Action Girl, Now.
- 26:53Speaker 3: We should start playing that, Like that should be added
- 26:55Speaker 3: to everyone's like gym playlist, like yes, I was, I
- 27:00Speaker 3: was hived.
- 27:01Speaker 2: It was awesome. And eventually the Power Rangers defeat the
- 27:07Speaker 2: US Minions, but oh no, they're special powers and suits
- 27:12Speaker 2: vanish because ivan Ooze has gone to the command Center
- 27:18Speaker 2: and he trashes the place and he nearly kills Zordan.
- 27:22Speaker 2: So the Power Rangers return to the Command Center and
- 27:25Speaker 2: discover that Jordon is dying and that he needs some
- 27:29Speaker 2: sort of vague great power to keep him alive.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Which is contained in the Penis Rock, which we don't
- 27:38Speaker 3: know yet. He creates the coin from the Penis Rock. Obviously,
- 27:44Speaker 3: I have another canon question for you, Carlos. Is there
- 27:49Speaker 3: any reason why Kimberley in particular is like Zordan's like
- 27:53Speaker 3: my father, I was like what uh.
- 27:56Speaker 4: No, okay, now that I can recall other then he
- 28:00Speaker 4: is the only adult person that like engages with them
- 28:05Speaker 4: outside of their principal who's useless, their teachers who don't
- 28:08Speaker 4: really seem engaged or concerned that like Bulk and skullar
- 28:12Speaker 4: like bullies TM in the school, like none of the
- 28:16Speaker 4: adults are functional. So it's just like I guess this
- 28:18Speaker 4: is the closest thing I have to a dad who's
- 28:20Speaker 4: like sending me on dangerous missions to go fight bad guys,
- 28:23Speaker 4: but it gave me powers to do it. I guess.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it's so wild. Yeah I was, because Zordan is
- 28:29Speaker 3: like such an amalgamation of other characters. You're like, wow,
- 28:31Speaker 3: every mentor character is just ultimately sending a child to
- 28:35Speaker 3: do their dirty work for them, And the Wizard of
- 28:38Speaker 3: Oz is the only character who's ever like appropriately called
- 28:42Speaker 3: out for it and.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Ooh says it. He's like, oh, Zordan's still using a
- 28:46Speaker 4: bunch of teenagers to do his dirty work. It's like,
- 28:49Speaker 4: imagine if you picked adults who are not from the
- 28:51Speaker 4: same high school, like six adults from around the world
- 28:54Speaker 4: who maybe would have more skills and talents to like
- 28:57Speaker 4: do this work. It's no teenagers, it's bad.
- 29:02Speaker 3: It's yeah, kids. I mean you could say the same
- 29:04Speaker 3: of one, uh what's his name, Dumbledore? Like they all
- 29:09Speaker 3: these mentor characters that are like, you might die, but
- 29:12Speaker 3: you'll definitely learn a lesson. You're like, I don't know, it.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Is weird anyway. The Rangers return to the command center.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Zordon is dying, so Alpha five is like, well, I
- 29:26Speaker 2: can send you to this distant planet and retrieve a
- 29:30Speaker 2: great power that I'm pretty sure is there. So Alpha
- 29:34Speaker 2: five teleports them to the planet of Fatos. Meanwhile, i've
- 29:40Speaker 2: an Ooz stages a coup against Rita, Rapulsa and Lord
- 29:45Speaker 2: Z and traps them in a snow globe. Yeah, okay,
- 29:50Speaker 2: pretty iconic. And then he makes more US minions. These
- 29:55Speaker 2: ones look like birds.
- 29:57Speaker 3: This is another ripoff from the Wizard of Us. This
- 30:00Speaker 3: is the director awesome. I'm not saying that as a criticism,
- 30:06Speaker 3: you know, it's it's homage qustionion work. Yeah.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Well, the tengu are like Japanese folkloric, like it's derived
- 30:14Speaker 4: from a thing. Yeah. I don't know in depth about it.
- 30:19Speaker 4: I just know that because they end up coming back
- 30:21Speaker 4: for the TV show, because they are in the Japanese franchise,
- 30:25Speaker 4: because they are part of like the folklore. Though I
- 30:27Speaker 4: don't know if it's exactly the same style of look,
- 30:31Speaker 4: but like the winged fighter is a thing, okay, right, because.
- 30:34Speaker 2: They look very different than the first Uzminians that he
- 30:38Speaker 2: conjures out of his blob of uz. Come, what is it?
- 30:43Speaker 3: What is the thing? He said? There's just so many
- 30:44Speaker 3: great I've in oohze line reads where he's like meat
- 30:47Speaker 3: my kids like.
- 30:51Speaker 4: He's got some of the best line reads.
- 30:52Speaker 3: It's great, he's really I love when like a character
- 30:58Speaker 3: actor just fully commits to being a kid's I was
- 31:00Speaker 3: thinking a lot of I don't expect either of you
- 31:03Speaker 3: to have seen this. I watch it with my kniece
- 31:05Speaker 3: last year Elmo's Adventures in Grouchland. Mandy Patankin is the
- 31:11Speaker 3: villain in that, and he is unbelievable, like just again
- 31:16Speaker 3: leaving it all in the field and did not have
- 31:19Speaker 3: to love it.
- 31:20Speaker 2: That rocks In any case, ivan Uz tells the bird
- 31:29Speaker 2: Us monsters to fly to the planet of Fatos and
- 31:34Speaker 2: destroy the Power Rangers. Then we cut to Fatos. The
- 31:38Speaker 2: Power Rangers begin their search for the great the very
- 31:43Speaker 2: specific great power that we know exactly what they're talking about.
- 31:48Speaker 2: But then the bird monsters show up. What are they
- 31:52Speaker 2: called again, Tengo tengu They show up, but the teens
- 31:57Speaker 2: don't have their mighty more powers anymore since Zordon is
- 32:02Speaker 2: dying and he's the one who gives them their powers.
- 32:05Speaker 2: So the powers are gone, so they're not very good
- 32:07Speaker 2: at fighting. But then this deis X woman in a
- 32:13Speaker 2: green bikini shows up and wards off the tengu This
- 32:19Speaker 2: is Dulcia, who is like, oh yeah, me and Zordon
- 32:25Speaker 2: go way back, so I'll help you guys.
- 32:29Speaker 3: And also I feel like there is heavily implied sexual
- 32:31Speaker 3: tension between her and Tommy, which to and maybe I'm projecting,
- 32:37Speaker 3: but like he he keeps I mean, also, it's one
- 32:41Speaker 3: of those CW you know issues, where like these characters
- 32:44Speaker 3: are canonically fifteen, but they're visibly twenty five, so you're like, canonically,
- 32:49Speaker 3: I have an issue. Obviously these actors are probably the
- 32:51Speaker 3: same age h. But he kept being like, what do
- 32:54Speaker 3: you mean, and she's like, be pale, Like I don't know.
- 32:57Speaker 3: I was just I was sensing a little bit of
- 32:59Speaker 3: a like domb vibe from her, which is fine if
- 33:02Speaker 3: they're both twenty five, but canonically they're not.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Right. Well, also, they so heavily sexualize her in her costuming.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Oh so I don't think you're necessarily like reading too
- 33:13Speaker 2: far into that, So.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess everything she's doing is sexualized, right.
- 33:20Speaker 4: She was initially I'm sure this is in your notes
- 33:22Speaker 4: for later, Jamie, but was like a Marishka hargatea FROMU
- 33:27Speaker 4: was originally supposed to play Dulcia Oh my.
- 33:30Speaker 3: God, which wasn't been a weird because her mom is
- 33:33Speaker 3: Jane Mansfield. It feels like a weird like continuation. But yeah,
- 33:38Speaker 3: I read that she got she because there's pictures of
- 33:41Speaker 3: her in costume, and then she got fired for and
- 33:43Speaker 3: this gets into the whole world of Power Rangers labor
- 33:48Speaker 3: issue expanded universe. She was fired because she took off
- 33:53Speaker 3: Christmas in New Year's was what I read.
- 33:56Speaker 4: They basically had her on hold for a while where
- 34:01Speaker 4: she was just like there but not really doing anything.
- 34:03Speaker 4: So she's like, it's the holidays, I'm going home to
- 34:06Speaker 4: be with my family. I'll be back and then she's like, oh,
- 34:09Speaker 4: I'm ready, and they're like, we don't need you. You've
- 34:11Speaker 4: been let go, and it's just like what what. There's
- 34:15Speaker 4: a clip of her on I think fellon one of
- 34:19Speaker 4: the late night shows talking about it and showing the
- 34:21Speaker 4: pictures to the audience.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, she the pictures are great. I mean,
- 34:25Speaker 3: and the actor who ended up doing the part is
- 34:27Speaker 3: also great. I'm just like, I guess she didn't get
- 34:29Speaker 3: to see her family over the holidays, Like they're like,
- 34:33Speaker 3: leave your family celebration. You're playing dull, dull, dull. Se'll see,
- 34:39Speaker 3: they'll see, Yes.
- 34:42Speaker 2: And she shows the Power Rangers this monolith in the
- 34:47Speaker 2: distance aka Penis Power Rock.
- 34:51Speaker 3: The big Penis in the distance.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, because that's where this great power is. But
- 34:59Speaker 2: she says that no one who has ever tried to
- 35:01Speaker 2: obtain the power has survived, but maybe the Power Rangers will,
- 35:08Speaker 2: and that she gives them new like animal spirit powers,
- 35:14Speaker 2: which come with costumes that happen to be the same
- 35:17Speaker 2: colors as their Power Ranger suits, which.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Means more toys every time they change outfits. You're like, okay,
- 35:25Speaker 3: got it, more toys, more toye yes.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Also, I did not write down who gets which animal
- 35:31Speaker 2: because it's again completely inconsequential to the plot, except for
- 35:36Speaker 2: maybe Adam, who gets the frog because he's insecure about it.
- 35:42Speaker 3: What a small arc for him. I liked it. Yeah there.
- 35:47Speaker 3: I mean, I do think that the animals that they're
- 35:50Speaker 3: given also sort of speak to the broad stereotypes applied
- 35:54Speaker 3: to the characters, to where especially with Kimberly, who is
- 36:00Speaker 3: like always like given quote unquote the most feminine thing
- 36:04Speaker 3: of the crane, like the I think like they'll see
- 36:07Speaker 3: us as like the graceful crane and you know the
- 36:11Speaker 3: agility of the crane.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Light is a feather. Yes, she got any light.
- 36:17Speaker 3: To be clear, she's skinny like you're like.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Okay, we get it.
- 36:22Speaker 3: Sure, we'll circle.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Yes. Meanwhile on Earth, Ivan Ooze wants to build an
- 36:32Speaker 2: army of mindless drones to do his bidding. So and
- 36:37Speaker 2: bear with me for this plan. He goes to a
- 36:39Speaker 2: factory to make a bunch of evil ooze, then gives
- 36:44Speaker 2: it out to kids at a carnival. And he's also
- 36:47Speaker 2: disguised himself as this like purple wizard man, and he
- 36:53Speaker 2: gives out the ooze. The ooze feels very ghack coated.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I bet they saw the ooze? Did I
- 37:00Speaker 3: saw that? They had to have solved the ooze.
- 37:03Speaker 4: But I don't remember having it at all.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Listeners, did any of you have the ooze? Yeah?
- 37:09Speaker 2: Let us know. And so he distributes ooze to the
- 37:14Speaker 2: kids so that the kids will bring the ooze home
- 37:19Speaker 2: and their parents will open it and be brainwashed to
- 37:24Speaker 2: do the work that Ivan Ooh's once done, such as
- 37:28Speaker 2: dig up his giant evil robots from underground. And somehow
- 37:34Speaker 2: this plan works exactly as intended.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Instantly, And this is where I was, and this is morbid.
- 37:42Speaker 3: But this does, to me anyways, turn into kind of
- 37:47Speaker 3: a Jonestown scenario for with with Ivan Ooze as Jim Jones,
- 37:53Speaker 3: because this is also escalating to mass everyone's gonna just
- 37:58Speaker 3: walk off a cliff. It feels very kool Aid coded,
- 38:02Speaker 3: where you're like, did he have to do? Like he's like,
- 38:05Speaker 3: you will all do my bidding and then then you're
- 38:09Speaker 3: gonna die and.
- 38:09Speaker 2: You're gonna die. Well, they drank the kool aid. They
- 38:12Speaker 2: drank the ooze.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Almost if Fred hadn't blasted them with that purple come stuff,
- 38:19Speaker 3: they would have. But also, I'm not even sure if
- 38:21Speaker 3: that's true. I don't know. We'll talk about.
- 38:22Speaker 2: It, right. So this kid, Fred realizes that something weird
- 38:27Speaker 2: is happening with all the parents in town, so he
- 38:30Speaker 2: goes to like start investigating. Back on Fatos, the Power
- 38:34Speaker 2: Rangers set off toward the monolith. They have to traverse
- 38:39Speaker 2: a big forest where some dinosaur skelling tins come to
- 38:45Speaker 2: life and attack them, so they have to fight off
- 38:48Speaker 2: the dinosaur. Then they reach the monolith, which is guarded
- 38:55Speaker 2: by these big scary rock monsters with spiky weapons, so
- 39:00Speaker 2: there's another fight scene and then the monolith opens and
- 39:05Speaker 2: the great power within is unleashed, and it gives the
- 39:11Speaker 2: Power Arrangers News suits and Zords, and that allows them
- 39:20Speaker 2: to teleport back to Earth. But oh no, ivan UZ's
- 39:23Speaker 2: giant robots are wreaking havoc in the streets of Angel Grove.
- 39:29Speaker 2: So the Power Rangers summon their new Zords to fight
- 39:33Speaker 2: the giant robots.
- 39:34Speaker 3: And this is kind of like a Star Wars y
- 39:36Speaker 3: kind of thing where they're in these little like battle
- 39:39Speaker 3: fighter It was cool. I liked it. They look like shit,
- 39:44Speaker 3: it's not.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Yeah, the CGI is horrible here, and they're fighting individually
- 39:50Speaker 2: in their little like ships at first, but then eventually
- 39:54Speaker 2: they come together into the Megazord.
- 39:57Speaker 3: And it's definitely not a Transformer.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Definitely not, definitely not. Meanwhile, that kuld Fred is trying
- 40:05Speaker 2: to rally all of the other children who are partying
- 40:10Speaker 2: and rolling on ooze. They're rolling on ooze to see
- 40:16Speaker 2: and he's like, we have to come together and save
- 40:21Speaker 2: our parents because the parents are, as you alluded to, Jamie,
- 40:25Speaker 2: are about to jump into a pit to their deaths.
- 40:28Speaker 3: Which seems extreme. Surely ivan News kind have found use
- 40:33Speaker 3: for them elsewhere.
- 40:34Speaker 4: You would think something.
- 40:37Speaker 2: So the Power Rangers. Meanwhile, lure ivan Ooze, who has
- 40:42Speaker 2: transformed himself or like entered one of the robots and
- 40:47Speaker 2: so now he's a huge evil robot. They lure him
- 40:52Speaker 2: into space and into the path of a comet which
- 40:57Speaker 2: hits ivan Ooze and kill him. And that's the big climax,
- 41:04Speaker 2: I guess, yeah. And then the Power Rangers head to
- 41:08Speaker 2: the command center to save zord On, but they're too late.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Oh he's dead.
- 41:14Speaker 3: This is one of my favorite and like, with all
- 41:17Speaker 3: due respect to the actors playing the Power Rangers, there
- 41:21Speaker 3: this scene they I don't know why they kept this shot.
- 41:24Speaker 3: It's like it's a pan of all the kids when
- 41:27Speaker 3: they when they're like, it's too late zord instead. And
- 41:29Speaker 3: then you see each actor, one by one try to
- 41:32Speaker 3: cry and fail. It's all of them being like and
- 41:37Speaker 3: then they just close their eyes like what. And then
- 41:40Speaker 3: the last one, I think, Jason, he doesn't even react.
- 41:42Speaker 3: He just stands there. You're just like, God, we got
- 41:46Speaker 3: to help these twenty five year old children.
- 41:48Speaker 2: You know what's hilarious. There is not a Power Ranger
- 41:51Speaker 2: named Jason.
- 41:52Speaker 3: Oh wait, is there there? Maybe was there on the
- 41:55Speaker 3: show or something. I don't know his real.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Life name Tommy is Jason David Frank.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Maybe that's what i've so it's the actor.
- 42:01Speaker 4: And Jason was the original Red Ranger.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Okay, I was definitely thinking about one of those guys.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Let's go with that.
- 42:11Speaker 4: You were talking about the actor and not the character.
- 42:13Speaker 3: Sorry, I just know so much about Power Rangers. My
- 42:16Speaker 3: wires are getting crossed.
- 42:18Speaker 2: So anyway, so they discover that Zordon has died, but
- 42:25Speaker 2: then they put their great animal spirit powers together and
- 42:31Speaker 2: it brings Zordan back to life and they rejoice, and
- 42:36Speaker 2: then the movie ends with a big celebration in Angel
- 42:41Speaker 2: Grove and everyone's like thanks Power Rangers. Fireworks, fireworks, and
- 42:47Speaker 2: that's the end. So let's take a quick break and
- 42:50Speaker 2: we'll come back to discuss.
- 43:03Speaker 3: And we're back. Isn't the last song it's like a
- 43:06Speaker 3: van Halen song that yeah, I think so, just to
- 43:11Speaker 3: go through the nineties, noess of this. There's the Power
- 43:15Speaker 3: Rangers orchestra. So that's let's leave that alone. Red Hot
- 43:19Speaker 3: Chili Peppers, a band called Shampoo question Mark.
- 43:23Speaker 4: Yes, they're the ones who do Oh We're in trouble
- 43:27Speaker 4: when the kids are partying.
- 43:28Speaker 3: I know that song. Okay, Divo snap exclamation point fun
- 43:35Speaker 3: Thomas featuring Carl Douglas. Don't know, of course, Van Halen,
- 43:40Speaker 3: they might be giants. Like there's just so many, Like
- 43:44Speaker 3: you were saying earlier, Caitlin, the had to have been
- 43:47Speaker 3: an expensive soundtrack for sure, Carlos, Where would you like
- 43:53Speaker 3: to start the discussion here?
- 43:56Speaker 4: Oh my god, there's so much good luck? Oh goodness,
- 44:04Speaker 4: I guess this is the Bechdel cast. Let's talk about
- 44:07Speaker 4: how Aisha and Kimberly keep getting like the short end
- 44:10Speaker 4: of the stick in their fights. They're like equally power rangers.
- 44:13Speaker 4: Kimberly's one of the ogs, and it's like, we need
- 44:17Speaker 4: to yell for help, like, what what's happening here?
- 44:21Speaker 3: Repeatedly it stinks. I'm curious how much this character through
- 44:26Speaker 3: the show. I'm like, it's the nineties, so I'm assuming
- 44:28Speaker 3: it does. But but yeah, I mean, it's like we
- 44:31Speaker 3: have these sort of five featureless teenagers. Personality wise, they're
- 44:36Speaker 3: they're all basically the same person, and so I feel
- 44:39Speaker 3: like a lot of what we have to go off
- 44:41Speaker 3: of with them are these like broad character stereotypes where
- 44:46Speaker 3: you can tell this even if you don't watch the show.
- 44:48Speaker 3: But like Kimberly is like the hyper feminine white girl and.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Her costume's pink.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Her costumes pink, and she's a girl girl TM and
- 44:59Speaker 3: so we're going to give her love interests, of course
- 45:01Speaker 3: we are. And it's Tommy and he's gonna be saving
- 45:04Speaker 3: her a lot. So there's her. And then I think
- 45:06Speaker 3: it's like also equally important to talk about who is
- 45:08Speaker 3: not in this movie and why so this movie and
- 45:14Speaker 3: Carlo's correct me as our resident expert, because I'm new,
- 45:17Speaker 3: I'm new to the culture here, but there are three
- 45:21Speaker 3: original Power Rangers who are missing from this movie. Because
- 45:25Speaker 3: so the original US series went from ninety two to
- 45:28Speaker 3: ninety six. This came out in ninety five, So the
- 45:31Speaker 3: original Yellow, Black, and Red Ranger I think are all
- 45:37Speaker 3: gone at this point, whoo okay, And the reason that
- 45:40Speaker 3: is is because of a pretty serious labor dispute that
- 45:46Speaker 3: really foreshadows we'll be talking about the extensive villainy of
- 45:51Speaker 3: Zionist millionaire heim Saban, but he's also been added labor
- 45:56Speaker 3: wise for a long time. The original characters are who
- 46:00Speaker 3: are not there are Trainy Kwan played by actor Tui Trag,
- 46:06Speaker 3: who played the Yellow Ranger, the only Asian cast member.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Certainly nothing going on there. In a similar fashion, we
- 46:16Speaker 3: have Zach Taylor played by actor Walter Emmanuel Jones, the
- 46:21Speaker 3: only black cast member of the original Power Rangers, playing
- 46:24Speaker 3: the Black Ranger. He has said that this was like
- 46:28Speaker 3: a choice that he made and that he's not bothered
- 46:31Speaker 3: by it, but it's been talked about extensively. And then
- 46:35Speaker 3: the Red Ranger who was played who is a character
- 46:40Speaker 3: named Jason Lee Scott played by a guy named Austin
- 46:43Speaker 3: Saint John. Three names really challenging. But these three characters
- 46:48Speaker 3: are missing because so this show, as we've talked about,
- 46:52Speaker 3: is an amalgamation of old footage from Japan and contemporary
- 46:57Speaker 3: footage at the time from the US. So the kids
- 47:01Speaker 3: are shooting a lot, but they're not necessarily performing everything,
- 47:04Speaker 3: which is at the heart of this labor dispute. So
- 47:07Speaker 3: the like Mighty Worphinpower Rangers becomes really successful right away
- 47:11Speaker 3: in the US, primarily in merchandising and toys, and like
- 47:15Speaker 3: this is disputes we've talked about over the years where
- 47:18Speaker 3: like Star Wars is the most famous one, where like
- 47:21Speaker 3: Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, like they weren't cut in
- 47:24Speaker 3: on merchandising and lost out on god knows how much
- 47:27Speaker 3: money by not having that in their contracts. Similar issue
- 47:32Speaker 3: going on here is that none of the young actors
- 47:35Speaker 3: are cut into merchandising. And I think what Carl Sabon
- 47:38Speaker 3: and Ko say is, well, you're not even doing the
- 47:40Speaker 3: stunts and people like the suits, they don't like you.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Sorry, is his name Carl ham Seon?
- 47:48Speaker 3: I don't know why I called them Carl Saban. Let's
- 47:50Speaker 3: be on. I think it's let's focus on the names
- 47:52Speaker 3: that I got right, which is amazing, and let's just
- 47:58Speaker 3: why am I any.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Are you thinking of Carl Sagan?
- 48:02Speaker 3: I'm thinking of Carl Sagan, honestly don't know. Okay, so
- 48:10Speaker 3: I'm Sebon. It's been Carl in my head for days
- 48:13Speaker 3: now for some reason.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Oh wow, well again he's an evil, heinous piece of shit.
- 48:18Speaker 3: So cure if I get it. But on the labor
- 48:21Speaker 3: piece of shit side. So, these are non union actors
- 48:26Speaker 3: at the time, which if you're which basically means you
- 48:29Speaker 3: can pay non unit uian actors anything they'll agree to.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Most people start non union while they build a resume,
- 48:36Speaker 3: and then they join SAG and are in a union,
- 48:39Speaker 3: get a standard rate and have people to help them
- 48:43Speaker 3: negotiate their contracts. So this started as a non union
- 48:46Speaker 3: show became extremely successful, and then half of the cast,
- 48:50Speaker 3: who are all represented by the same manager at the time,
- 48:53Speaker 3: they're red, yellow, black Rangers, go to Sabon and Co.
- 48:58Speaker 3: At the you know, beginning of this season, I guess,
- 49:00Speaker 3: and they're like, hey, we want a cut of merchandising.
- 49:04Speaker 3: And the thing that's like really wild to me is
- 49:06Speaker 3: like they're like, we want to become union actors and
- 49:09Speaker 3: they say, no, fuck you. I am not exactly sure.
- 49:13Speaker 3: I know that the actor who played Kimberly. Let's see,
- 49:18Speaker 3: let's see if I get Amy Joe Johnson. Everyone in
- 49:20Speaker 3: the nineties had three names. Amy Jo Johnson later expressed
- 49:25Speaker 3: regret for not having doing this because it seems like
- 49:27Speaker 3: the all the kids were or the young actors were
- 49:30Speaker 3: given the same bad deal, but only three of them
- 49:34Speaker 3: fought against it. And I think because they weren't a
- 49:37Speaker 3: united front, or maybe it would have gone this way. Anyways,
- 49:39Speaker 3: We'll never know. So Bond was like, we are going
- 49:42Speaker 3: to bank on.
- 49:43Speaker 5: The fact that kids care more about the suits than
- 49:47Speaker 5: they care about you, and they just did away with
- 49:49Speaker 5: the characters entirely, so, you know, not only is this
- 49:54Speaker 5: like a massive labor issue, And as Amy Jo Johnson
- 49:59Speaker 5: has said, this means that the remaining cast members, sure
- 50:03Speaker 5: they're still on Power Rangers, but they're still making like
- 50:05Speaker 5: shitty wages and being put in unsafe conditions constantly, and
- 50:09Speaker 5: they're not protected by a union.
- 50:10Speaker 3: Like Amy Jo Johnson said, she was almost electrocuted on
- 50:14Speaker 3: the set of this movie. And like, you know, just
- 50:17Speaker 3: there were all of these malpractice issues because it wasn't
- 50:20Speaker 3: an above board set because they weren't union. So not
- 50:24Speaker 3: only left the remaining cast members in this very vulnerable place,
- 50:27Speaker 3: it got these other actors, you know, cast out of
- 50:30Speaker 3: this very successful franchise just for advocating for basic, basic,
- 50:35Speaker 3: basic labor rights. And also you lose two people of
- 50:39Speaker 3: color in the primary cast. So that is where how
- 50:44Speaker 3: we get the new characters of Aisha who oh my god,
- 50:48Speaker 3: there's so many names. Who is played by the actor helped.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Me out, Karen Ashley, I think.
- 50:56Speaker 3: Karen Ashley, Yes, so she comes in and take except
- 51:00Speaker 3: the Yellow Ranger role as Ayisha, and then we get
- 51:06Speaker 3: a different Black Ranger.
- 51:08Speaker 4: Frog Johnny Young Bosh.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Yes, the Frog, and a different Red Ranger. But like
- 51:14Speaker 3: this was all very recent like around the time that
- 51:18Speaker 3: this movie was being made, like those decisions had sort
- 51:20Speaker 3: of just happened, and they're you know, not that you
- 51:24Speaker 3: would expect someone of Heimsiban's character to ever express remorse
- 51:29Speaker 3: over having done this. It just shows like from moment one,
- 51:32Speaker 3: this was a business endeavor and that even the people
- 51:36Speaker 3: who you would think you would want to treat well
- 51:39Speaker 3: and pay over they were making sixty thousand dollars a year,
- 51:43Speaker 3: maybe they were making six hundred dollars an episode on
- 51:46Speaker 3: like the most popular children's franchise like in the West.
- 51:50Speaker 3: Like it's just it was ridiculous. So that is like whatever.
- 51:55Speaker 3: I just wanted to give context for who these characters
- 51:58Speaker 3: are and that like half of this cast is sort
- 52:00Speaker 3: of new to the kids watching it.
- 52:03Speaker 2: I'd also like to dive just a little bit deeper
- 52:06Speaker 2: into the racial component here, because the conversation about the
- 52:12Speaker 2: original Black Ranger being played by a black actor the
- 52:16Speaker 2: original Yellow Ranger being played by an Asian actor, that's
- 52:21Speaker 2: a conversation that has been happening since the nineties. It's
- 52:25Speaker 2: like and so you so, you know, it's bad if
- 52:27Speaker 2: people were noticing it in the.
- 52:29Speaker 3: Nineties, particularly because I mean, and it's just like it's
- 52:32Speaker 3: just shows the aggressive racism of the makers of this franchise,
- 52:36Speaker 3: the American franchise specifically, because this is taken from an
- 52:39Speaker 3: Asian franchise, right, and it is still extremely anti Asian
- 52:43Speaker 3: in its portrayal of its only Asian character, who unfortunately
- 52:48Speaker 3: died very young, Tui Tray, died in a car crash
- 52:51Speaker 3: when she was only twenty seven. The racial components. I
- 52:55Speaker 3: know that it's been like you're saying, like debated since
- 52:59Speaker 3: the nineties, and Walter Emmanuel Jones has said, like, it
- 53:03Speaker 3: doesn't bother me, and I'm like, great, but I think
- 53:06Speaker 3: it is a valid critique regardless.
- 53:09Speaker 4: For sure.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Well, I was curious to see if anyone from the
- 53:13Speaker 2: cast and or crew has said anything about this over
- 53:17Speaker 2: the years, and so I'm pulling from a Variety article
- 53:20Speaker 2: from earlier this year. So this is about the series quote.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Head writer Tony Oliver said that none of us were
- 53:29Speaker 2: thinking stereotypes when these casting decisions were originally made, which
- 53:34Speaker 2: is why the show ran for two seasons with the
- 53:36Speaker 2: black character the Black Ranger and the Asian character the
- 53:40Speaker 2: Yellow Ranger. It wasn't until my assistant pointed out in
- 53:43Speaker 2: a meeting one day that Oliver realized these castings were
- 53:47Speaker 2: upholding stereotypes. Oliver added, it was such a mistake. The
- 53:52Speaker 2: piece goes on to say, quote co creator Shuki Levy
- 53:56Speaker 2: previously told Complex that Jones and try casting wasn't intentional
- 54:02Speaker 2: at all. At that time. Haim Saban and I were
- 54:05Speaker 2: new to this country. We didn't grow up in the
- 54:07Speaker 2: same environment that exists in America with regard to skin color.
- 54:11Speaker 2: We grew up in Israel, where being a black person
- 54:14Speaker 2: is like being any kind of color. It's not something
- 54:17Speaker 2: we talked about all the time. It wasn't a big issue, unquote.
- 54:22Speaker 3: So first of all, so many layers of yeah, it's
- 54:25Speaker 3: like word to begin Yeah, famously tolerant and non racist,
- 54:30Speaker 3: fake ass country of Israel, Like are you fucking serious?
- 54:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:34Speaker 2: Second, just like the privilege of not thinking about or
- 54:38Speaker 2: not having to think about race, or not noticing the
- 54:42Speaker 2: racist implications behind casting choices, Like I.
- 54:45Speaker 3: Also just like, don't believe it. I think that they
- 54:48Speaker 3: stopped casting Asian and black actors in these roles because
- 54:52Speaker 3: they were criticized for it, not because they were like,
- 54:55Speaker 3: oh we someone brought up a gentle like someone gently
- 54:58Speaker 3: told me, and I was like I didn't, no, because
- 55:00Speaker 3: it's like, not only is that privilege, I don't believe
- 55:03Speaker 3: that that's how they why they stopped doing that. I'm
- 55:06Speaker 3: guessing they stopped doing that because they've got in trouble
- 55:08Speaker 3: for it, right, And Saban is just a fucking monster.
- 55:12Speaker 3: I mean, like, to this day he is still with
- 55:14Speaker 3: us and still aggressively pouring money into pro Israel causes.
- 55:20Speaker 3: To this day, he's been denounced by the Arab American Institute.
- 55:24Speaker 3: In the last year, he is has well over two
- 55:27Speaker 3: billion dollars from I'm assuming merchandising that he stole from
- 55:33Speaker 3: these actors, as well as different investments that he's made
- 55:38Speaker 3: that I didn't honestly look into because I didn't want
- 55:41Speaker 3: to know anything else about him.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Yeah, understandable.
- 55:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 55:45Speaker 2: And then in response to those comments made by the
- 55:51Speaker 2: head writer and co creator, this is pulling from another
- 55:56Speaker 2: Varieidi article, Walter Emmanuel Jones and the actor who played
- 56:01Speaker 2: who originally played the Black Ranger in the series.
- 56:04Speaker 3: And was also in Brink, I didn't realize one of
- 56:08Speaker 3: my childhood faves.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Apparently there's footage of him from a documentary made about
- 56:14Speaker 2: The Power Rangers saying something on set like oh, of course,
- 56:19Speaker 2: like the black guy plays the Black Ranger, go figure,
- 56:24Speaker 2: so he you know, he was commenting on it at
- 56:27Speaker 2: the time. He later says in an Instagram post, I've
- 56:32Speaker 2: always believed in focusing on the positive. I understand the
- 56:35Speaker 2: impulse to address what might be seen as cultural insensitivity,
- 56:39Speaker 2: but calling it a mistake, that's the reference to the
- 56:43Speaker 2: head writer Tony Oliver's comment. But calling it a mistake
- 56:46Speaker 2: would dismiss the impact it had on countless people around
- 56:49Speaker 2: the world who found inspiration and representation in TV's first
- 56:53Speaker 2: black superhero morphin into none other than the Black Power Ranger.
- 56:58Speaker 2: It wasn't a mistake. It was a milestone. It was
- 57:01Speaker 2: an honor unquote. So it's it's a complicated thing, you know,
- 57:08Speaker 2: the actor not being particularly bothered by it is that
- 57:12Speaker 2: is good.
- 57:13Speaker 3: I mean, that's good. And it's also like, I mean,
- 57:16Speaker 3: and again, we don't know this guy, but I think
- 57:19Speaker 3: it is like a very complicated thing. When I believe
- 57:24Speaker 3: that Walter, Emmanuel Jones and a lot of these original
- 57:28Speaker 3: actors still do work for the franchise, right, so it's
- 57:31Speaker 3: like who knows, like it not to cast doubt on
- 57:34Speaker 3: the quote, like I hope he feels fine about it.
- 57:36Speaker 3: But it's like, if you're still making appearances as a
- 57:39Speaker 3: former cast member of the Power Rangers, you probably wouldn't
- 57:42Speaker 3: be disparaging the Power Rangers. So true, it's it's a
- 57:48Speaker 3: tricky thing. But yeah, I mean, and we've I think
- 57:51Speaker 3: we've talked about this in a number of examples of
- 57:56Speaker 3: how you know, the characters of Trainy and of Zach
- 58:00Speaker 3: meant a lot to a lot of kids, and that
- 58:02Speaker 3: like that is for all of this franchise's faults, and
- 58:07Speaker 3: there are many like that that still has value too.
- 58:12Speaker 2: And then as far as the new characters who were
- 58:15Speaker 2: brought in.
- 58:16Speaker 3: For wait, sorry, I'm seeing the link you sent Carlos.
- 58:20Speaker 3: Oh my god, another labor layer. Oh, Carlos just put
- 58:24Speaker 3: in the chat. The original Yellow Ranger, Audrey du Bois,
- 58:28Speaker 3: was originally cast as the Yello Ranger before being replaced
- 58:31Speaker 3: by Tuy Trang due to her requesting financial help to
- 58:34Speaker 3: move to La to film the series. So another just
- 58:38Speaker 3: like this company being an absolute piece of shit and
- 58:42Speaker 3: not doing the bare minimum for their actors, come on,
- 58:46Speaker 3: ye horrendous.
- 58:47Speaker 4: They also were like gotten rid of on the show
- 58:50Speaker 4: in like the most anti climactic and shitty way. So
- 58:54Speaker 4: if we have later when Kimberly leaves the show and
- 58:58Speaker 4: gives her powers to the new Pink Power Ranger played
- 59:01Speaker 4: by Catherine Sutherland, I believe like she gets to take
- 59:03Speaker 4: her power coin, put it in her hand, and like
- 59:06Speaker 4: you see the transfer of power from Kimberly to the
- 59:09Speaker 4: new Ranger with the original trio, they are seen in
- 59:15Speaker 4: the show with like reused footage or they're shot from behind,
- 59:19Speaker 4: or somebody's in a wig, or you don't really get
- 59:22Speaker 4: to have that same moment of them giving Rocky, Adam
- 59:25Speaker 4: and Aisha their powers. It's just like, oh, we're gonna
- 59:29Speaker 4: be in a suit and then teleport away. They don't
- 59:31Speaker 4: get to say goodbye. There's no sort of conclusion. It's
- 59:34Speaker 4: just like you're off the show. Now we've got these
- 59:37Speaker 4: new characters who all of a sudden are taking up
- 59:40Speaker 4: like half of the episode because we've got to introduce
- 59:42Speaker 4: these heroes who care and are worth being the replacements
- 59:46Speaker 4: for Jason, Zach and Treney.
- 59:49Speaker 3: Which is so uh yeah, I saw that like clip
- 59:52Speaker 3: that literally it's so clunky. It's like them in silhoette
- 59:57Speaker 3: because it's body doubles. It's not actually the actors the
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: actors had already quit, and then voice doubles being like, Hey,
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: we're going to Switzerland. Oh, we're going to the peace conference.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: And they're like, oh man, we're gonna miss you so much.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: You're just like okay, and then the final or not
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: maybe I don't know. Another sort of controversy that is
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: around a cast member who is in this movie is
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: David Yost, who plays Billy Cranston, who I was like, wow,
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: that's so close to Brian Kranston. And Brian Kranston also
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: did voices for the original Power Rangers series and he
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: plays I think zored On in the twenty seventeen adaptation,
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: so the Cranston is strong with this franchise for some reason.
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: But that David Yost, who is another actor who is
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: now involved again in the expanded Power Rangers universe. But
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: he didn't talk about this for years, but stopped acting
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: and left the show shortly after or he stayed till
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: nineteen eighty five, so he stayed through the movie and
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: then he stayed on the show for a little bit
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: after that into Power Rangers, Zeo question Mark, but then
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: he left and he said due to extensive homophobic harassment
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: that he received on the side of the show from
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: I honest, I didn't go super deep into it. I
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: read in the interview where he first spoke about it.
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: It sounds like what really plagued him the most is
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: that it was coming from the highest level. It was
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: coming from the producers. He was getting harassment from crew
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: impossibly cast, but like it was also being encouraged, like
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: the cast was being encouraged to interrogate his sexuality by
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: the producers of the show, to the where he felt
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: so uncomfortable. And there's literally like video footage from the nineties.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: It's just which it's very in passing, but it was
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: a part of the like Power Rangers behind the scenes
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: clip where he's being like flipped off by a crew
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: member and being called Gavid, like to his face in
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: a BTS thing like so it's just, you know, obviously
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: we believe him anyway, but the fact that there's like
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: footage that was released to the public that backs up
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: what he's saying, it just sounded like it was extremely
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: traumatizing and he didn't return to Power Rangers. He weirdly,
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: I was like fascinating. He moved to behind the scenes work.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: He worked on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: a while as a segment producer, I was like, what
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: a life. And now he's like back involved in the
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: Power Rangers universe as of like a couple of years ago.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: But he kept it at arm's length for a long
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: time because the homophobic harassment was so severe. As we
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: talked about Amy, Joe Johnson later regretted not encouraging the
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: rest of the cast and herself to stand with the
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: three who ended up getting fired over labor just futes
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: and also almost died on the set of this movie.
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: And she does not fuck with the Power Rangers. Now
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: she's she's an indie film director in Canada, and I
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: love that for her. Oh, good for her.
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: So that's understandable.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: I was like, I would also move to Canada and
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: say fuck the Power Rangers. But so that's the context.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Yeah, So to circle back to the conversation about gender,
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: Oh my.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: Gosh, she has the conversation you started an hour ago.
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: Girl, I mean, this is all important, this is all relevant,
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: Like there's intersectionality, it's all layered, it's all in.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: There, indeed. Well, and then to speak to the intersection
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: of gender and race when it comes to Kimberly and Aisha.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: So Kimberly is white, Ayisha is black, and wouldn't you know,
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: the white character has far more focus, more lines of dialogue,
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: generally more screen time, and just a more prominent character overall.
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: She's also given and it's like, I don't even I'm
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: not saying this is a pro, but she has a
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: love interest in Jason, Ayisha does not. I feel like
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: Ayisha is very largely plot wise and often just in
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: the shots by herself, where there are like micro relationships
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: where we're like, oh, Jason and Kimberly like each other,
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: Billie and the Black Ranger, the Frog Ranger or friends
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: or something. But Aisha is just like kind of by
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: herself a lot, which is a shame because I guess
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: in this series and you two actually watched it, but
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: like Kimberly and Triny were best friends, and that was
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: like something that was frequently coming up on the show
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: of like how they were BFFs. And this movie doesn't
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: really have space for any relationship between any of the
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: Power Rangers, but it's like they don't even bother to
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: do the of kind of nice, sort of misogynist thing
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: of oh the two girls are friends, and and the
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: fact that it's I think that we see this a
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: lot with how black women and girls are portrayed on screen.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: Of like there's a lot of attention drawn to how
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: feminine Kimberly is and in this I think very like
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: white colonial mindset way, And I wouldn't say that, like,
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but I wouldn't say
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: that like Ayesha is aggressively othered, Like she's given the
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: character of a bear, which is I would say, like
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: comparably strong to what the other power rangers are given
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: in terms of an animal, Like I don't really have
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: an issue with it.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Certainly stronger than a frog, that's true.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: Frog and crane. I'm like, I don't I'm not so
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: sure about that.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: But the crane seem flimsy to me, no offense to cranes.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: But I don't know. But that also comes up in
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: intersectional feminist masterpiece Killed, so who knows.
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: True.
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: But I didn't think she was othered. I just feel
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: like she was like neglected pretty severely in this.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: Yeah, to see and then to the point you were
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: just making Jamie about like Kimberly's given a hetero love interest.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: She's also more sexualized in her costuming because when she's
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: not in the Power Rangers suit she's wearing, she's wearing
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: short shorts and a very form fitting crop top versus Ayisha,
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: who's wearing like a baggy hoodie. And I'm not, you know,
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: advocating for them to be equally sexualized.
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: But like right, it's like everyone loses in this scenario,
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: which is true of most subjugations. Like it's just like
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: both of these characters are losing. I think Amy Jo
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: Johnson when they were like Amy, why didn't you come
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: back for the twenty twenty three movies, She's like, because
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: I'm fifty three and I don't want to have to
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: wear spandex for the Power Rangers anymore. As like fuck yeah, fair.
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: And I think adding in to injury. It's also the
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: kind of part they'd written for her was like negligible
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: at best. It's like, I'm not coming back to do
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: this thing that has been not great in all of
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: these ways, that has followed me for decades for you
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: not to give me a real part because I watched it.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: Of course, like Billy's character and Zach's character play a
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: huge role. It's really about them. Everyone else is just
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: kind of in the background, and they mourn Treeny's character
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: because they kill her off in the show because the
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: original actors passed in real life. But it's like, yeah,
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: makes total sense why you wouldn't want to come back
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: for this, Like, I get it, Amy, Amy Joe, I
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: get it.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: You're chilling. You're chilling in Canada. You're like, I'm not gonna.
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: I'm making music. Like she's like, oh, making music too. Yeah,
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: she's like an indie pop uh maybe indie folk. I
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: don't know genres, but she like makes music as well.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: Good for her, Good for her. I'm like, I I
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: feel like, yeah, they're because because there are I mean,
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: and this isn't necessarily relevant to the conversation, but there
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: are cast members who did not have as fruitful post
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: careers as Amy Jo Johnson did. I think she probably
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: ended up doing having the most fruitful post Power Rangers
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: career and is suspiciously the only person who refuses to
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: engage now. And also that just worth mentioning that Jason
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: David Frank, who plays Tommy, was very I mean, he
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: was like basically the face of the series. It seems
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: like for years and years and years, very involved in
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: the fan community all this stuff, and then he unfortunately
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: took his own life in twenty twenty two, and so
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: the movie that we were just talking about that Amy
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: Jo Johnson was like, fuck this movie. It is also
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: dedicated to the memory of those two original cast members,
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: Jason David Frank and Thui Tran. Yeah.
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: I guess the one thing I'll say about the gender
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: piece that's very clear. When they're calling their zords, everyone
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: gets into their zord and has a cute little moment.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: Kimberly's is very stereotypical. It's just like, oh, nice stereo.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: It's just like you were in a giant zord, which
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: is pretty similar to what she says when she gets
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: in the I think the pterodactyl in the original series
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: for the first time. Okay, so I think it's a callback,
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: but I'm like, does an age well, And then we
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: don't see Ayisha say anything when she gets out to
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: her zord, like not a second, Like you literally just
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: have to her to be like, let's kick some butt,
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: let's like do something, like anything anything in the zord.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: Nothing I kept waiting for, even just like nineties cast
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: off Girl Boss moment of like one of the girls
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: saving the other or something like anything, I'll take anything,
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: and they know it's always one of the guys has
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: to swing in. If it's Kimberly, it's her love interest
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: has to swing in and save her, and she, you know,
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: like it's and going back to your point, Caitlin is
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: Aisha has literally no character that we know of. Kimberly
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: sort of has a character because she's been on the
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: series for a long time. But yeah, the and Ayosha
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: is there is because Trety isn't there for all of
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: these horrible so it just like goes up and up
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: and up and up.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: I will say that I feel like the romantic kind
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: of thing that's going on between Kimberly and oh god,
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: what's his name?
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: Tommy Tommy, it's every generic nineties name.
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: Ever, I feel like is not played up so much
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: to the extent that I didn't even totally notice it.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: And it also could be that I was watching this
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: movie in a fugue state, so maybe it's a me thing,
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: but I, like Loki did not really pick up on it.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: Oh really, yeah, it's I think, I mean, it's definitely there,
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: But I agree it's not like harped on in the
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: way that other franchises would harp on it.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: True, But and this is speaking to something you were
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: saying earlier, Carlos, But the the women are power rangers
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: as well, they are warriors. They have this theoretically the
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: same powers as their male counterparts. But they keep getting
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: the damsel treatment where they're like put into, you know,
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: a tight spot and either have to be saved or
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: the story in that moment is really focused on like,
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: oh my god, look how much danger they're in because
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: they're trying, to the movies, needing ways to heighten the tension,
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: heighten the stakes. How do we do that?
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: Oh no, one of.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: The girls is in trouble. So that happens quite a bit.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: There are a few instances here and there where like
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: one of the boys gets in a sticky situation as well,
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: but it's never really harped upon the way that it
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: is when the teen girls are in a tight spot.
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: You mentioned this also, Carlos. Like they're screaming a lot,
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: like anytime a bad guy shows up, they're like, ah,
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: and it's like you're a warrior, You're and sure they're scary,
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: like like the boys aren't screaming, Like it's just all
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: of these very gendered, reductive tropes are happening.
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: The dinosaur skeleton fight scenes like the perfect example, you
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: have Rocky the Red Ranger get slammed into a wall
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: and seemingly knocked unconscious, and then almost instantly he's back up,
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: no screaming, no yelling. Meanwhile, Aisha and Kimberly both get
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: cornered different times in the same fight and have to
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: be saved by either Adam or Rocky or Tommy, who
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: then immediately backflips on top of the dinosaur to like
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: decapitate it. It's just like we could have just little tweaks,
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: we could have done little differences there, Like it didn't
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: have to be this.
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: It's no, absolutely not. It's also fixable because the plot
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: is so goofy too, like anyone could that Getting back
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: into stuff I liked because we we had we had
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: to spend all I mean, like there is so much
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: to talk about with this, Like, yes, we had to,
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: but getting back into stuff I liked the dinosaur beig
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: the dinosa or See's ending with I think Tommy like
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: yanking just a random bone from it and you literally
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: hear like, and then and then the fight's.
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: Over when you're like, it's like a cartoon, Oh.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, it's kind of adorable. Yeah, I mean this
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: is this is worth of a plot issue where that
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: seems like it's not an issue in the actual TV show,
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: but just the Power Rangers, like what they're fighting for.
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: And then what Fred, who I'm pretty sure is just
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: a movie character. Yes, he's like the randommest character. Like
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: the Power Rangers and Fred, like they're not fighting for
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: the same thing. The Power Rangers seem like not invest
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: This is why I was like, do they have do
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: they even have parents? Because they're so like kind of
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: keeping the whole, like all of the parents are gonna
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: walk off a cliff in I think their hometown. They're
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: like not worried about that at all, to the point
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: where I think it's like the Frog Power Ranger saves
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: the kids from this random almost train accident, and then
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: the kids are like, oh, we're gonna make it, We're
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: gonna go save our parents, and the Frog Power Ragers
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: like good luck. Kids, almost like do you not care
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: your parents live there? And then so then I spiraled out,
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: I'm like, do they not have parents. Is that why
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: they don't care what happens in the city where they live.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: I would still care, well, Zordan is their daddy?
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: Yeah there?
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: Or maybe their parents didn't get oozed because they didn't
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: bring home the ooze.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: So like the perfect plan, distribute oohs to the children,
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: and the children will bring it to their parents. The
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: parents will obviously open the ooze.
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: I mean, and that dad with three brain cells to
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: his name was and.
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: He dug in.
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: He's like, he was like, my son's not home. I
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: guess my parents gack. Honestly, I'm like, I'm laughing, and
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: yet I'm like, hmm, well, if my here's the thing.
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: If I was a parent, and I hope to be
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: one che if my kid brought home oohs, I would
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: want to touch it, but I would be like, kids
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: are dirty. I'm not touching theirs. I'm going to go
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: to this story. Get my own, your own, my own oose.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, good clean ooze, get not contaminated oohz. Yeah. Well,
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: for the Fred subplot, I was like, well, every movie
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: has to be about fathers and sons, so we need
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: to wedge of fathers and sons thing in here. Yeah,
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: the thing that I thought was hilarious about this is
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: toward the end, Fred goes to the construction site where
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: the parents are all about to like jump off of
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: a cliff or into the pit or whatever.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: The pit. You're just like, ooh ooh. That is just
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: it reminded me of just as I was researching how
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: the American version, in one of the few instances where
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: I'm like siding with the American version of Supercentai, that
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: they would change a lot of plot points because the
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: original Supercentai was so gruesome where I guess there would
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: be children regularly just like murdered in cold blood, and
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: the American version was like, we're kind of we're going
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: to not include those parts, and I'm you know, in
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: a show for five year olds, I'm pro that, But
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: but then you get the little senses of it of like, no,
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: we're okay if we jonestown these random characters adults.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, well okay, So the adults are about to jump
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: in the pit. Fred gets hold of some huge water
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: nozzle and there are also children who are trying to
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: like physically push the parents away from jumping into the pit.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: Fred starts spraying the water to try to again also
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: push the parents back, but he ends up just like
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: blasting the children with the water rather than any of
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: the adults. It's just like it's like a fire.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: Hose, yeah, full of like purple ghack, And no, I.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Think it was just water.
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: I think it might just be the color of like
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: the quarry is, like it's colored in an odd way.
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: But I think it's just supposed to be water.
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay, So clearly I misigressed on what was happening there.
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: It also felt like he thinks that him doing that
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: is what saves them, when in fact it is the
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: power Rangers blowing up the villain is what saves them.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: But I think that Fred spends the rest of his
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: life being like, who if I hadn't blasted our parents
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: with a fire hose, they all would have died. Like yeah, wait,
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: there's a really good Ivan oohs line. I wanted to
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: shout out.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Oh please, I have a few lines I enjoy as well.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: Oh Aysha a big moment for Ayisha. Her spaceship kicks
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: Ivan oohz in the balls. So that's yes, that's fun.
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: That's fun.
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: We like that that line passes the BECHDL test. You
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: have what are you doing taking care of business.
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: Yes, it is a very funny pass. But yeah when
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: says now I'm starting to get really angry, and then
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: he just stretches out and like he enters a robot
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: in a way that I wouldn't say is unsexual, and
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: then he says, I feel big again? What do you
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: mean again?
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah? My favorite lines were I think this is
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: Billy during one of the early fights in the movies
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: when he's like punching one of the Ooze minions and
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: then he goes, you oose, you lose. Okay, that's good writing.
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: And then my other favorite, like what the fuck who
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: wrote this thing? Is so the Power Rangers they arrive
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: on Planet Fatos and they keep talking about how urgent
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: it is that they get the power so that they
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: can save Jordan. Jordon is actively dying. Like the sense
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: of urgency is talked about a lot, but they are
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: moving so fucking slowly. They these kids, there's no urgency
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: in their movement.
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: These kids need to be in school, Like, I don't
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: understand what is going on in these kids' brains. They're
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: they're given these like because even if they are not
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: able to do these animal powers for whatever reason I
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: would I at least want to see them. Wonder why
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: the fact that they're like, all right, cool, we went
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: to the big we like made it to the the
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: thingy and Zena was there and she gave us these powers.
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: But uh, but we can't use them and we're not
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: gonna try, and we're just gonna travel on foot and
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: we're gonna walk to the We're gonna walk.
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: To the penis and like set up, it's set up.
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: She turns into an owl. So it's like, if that's
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: her power, why didn't we turn into a wolf?
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: Yeah, we can literally see her do it. Wow.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: So it's like plant never never never payoff And so
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: they get the zords. I guess technically would be the payoff.
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: But it's like that's too She wasn't an owl zord.
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: She was an.
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: Owl, right. Yeah, she didn't turn into a spaceship, although
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: I wouldn't have hated if she did. Her character cracked
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: me up? Is she and other stuff?
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: Nope?
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: Oh good.
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: So there's this YouTuber called miss stare Fusion who actually,
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: for the thirtieth anniversary of the movie's release, did a
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: comparison between the movie and how the TV show handles
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: the transition because this was the transition from like one
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: set of powers to the ninja powers, and so in
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: the TV show, the way they did this was different
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: with Turbo later the movie is canon, So like the
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: movie is the transition, and here there's a guy named
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: Ninjor who's like a Dudley do Right kind of character,
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: who's in a blue suit. He's basically a Zord that
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: turns into a bigger Zord and comes back later to
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: help the Rangers. But like they have to go through
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: like four episodes to get the powers to like reclaim them,
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: get the same suits, fight the Tenga, and then get
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: the powers to come back because Tommy technically destroys their
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: powers in the TV show, Alfa's like, you're pushing the
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: zords too much. You're going to like overthrow the powers.
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: And then he's like, we gotta do whatever it takes.
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: Immediately the swords explode, they lose their powers, they fall
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: out of their swords. There's a bit more meat for
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: the movie.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: These kids are a mess. These kids are a mess.
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: I love them. Yeah, it is like I don't know
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: it is so whatever, just like speak you to like
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: and I would love both of your feelings on this too,
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: because I was trying to put a little time, like
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: putting this franchise into a larger context around like merchandise
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: heavy franchises, international franchises, the like exchange of entertainment culture
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: between the US and Japan, which is a very complicated subject.
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: And because it is just like it's it's so silly,
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: but it's also like it's it's a rich text, these
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: these power Rangers and its history with Super Sentai, and
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: which I kept I'm immature, so I kept accidentally saying
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: Hentai and then going he he, and then saying sorry, Sentai.
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: But because it didn't occur to me until I was
- 1:22:17Speaker 3: like doing some just like kind of basic background research
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: that this is sort of similar to how Godzilla became
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: popular in the US, is by showing original footage from
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: Japan and then just throwing in a couple American actors
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: and releasing it as if it's completely original content. It's
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: just very it's very interesting, and I know we don't
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: really have the bandwidth within this episode to fully get
- 1:22:40Speaker 3: into international relations, but just because like the US and Japan,
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: there is still such an intense cultural exchange today, it's
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: just like a very particular moment, and I just had
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: a lot of fun watching the like the original cuts,
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: which I feel like as a grown up, you're like, oh, yeah,
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: that's a different person twenty years ago, but it still
- 1:23:08Speaker 3: somehow kind of works. Like it works Rita Repulsa, Like
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: it's very badly dubbs, but it works. I wish that's
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: my main note for this movie at the end of
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: the day. I know it's been an hour and a half,
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: but Rita Repulsa, get her out of the snow globe.
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: Get her out.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: Because she's such a prominent character in the series, I
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: was expecting her to be something in the movie, but I.
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: Kept waiting for her to like join forces with ivan
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: Ooze at least. I'm like, don't get rid of Ivanoze.
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: I love ivan Nees, but you know, talk about silencing women,
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: putting readA Repulsa in a snow globe come on.
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: After throwing goo on her mouth to shut her up,
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: and Z so happy about it, Like, no, she's so important.
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: That voice is iconic. It's so sad she does come
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: out at the end.
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: Yeah, she's well, she's rooting. She and lord Z are
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: rooting for the Power Rangers because they hate iven Ouz
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: so much that they're like, I hope they kick his ass,
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: and then they do by throwing him into a comment,
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: and that's awesome worth mentioning. I think again. I got
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: to talk about Bulk and Skull now, the fat character's
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: name being Bulk. First of all, there's also a part
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: where Skull asks Bulk, are you hungry and Bulk says
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: always so, just casual fat phobia present in the Bulk character.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: I really wanted them to be a larger part of
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: the movie as well, but they are like barely even
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: tertiary characters, Like they get nothing.
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: It really does just feel like random fan service of
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: like they're on the show and they jump out of
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: a plane, see yam. It's too bad. I would say
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: a whole movie about those guys.
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: They have more of a role in Turbo, but they
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: similarly have nothing to do with the main plot and
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: the TV transition between seasons. But it's also the fat
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: phobia is so much worse. It's like they're the bully
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: TM characters, but like rewatching Power Rangers as an adult,
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: you're like, you guys are doing too much to these
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: so called bullies, Like you're really bullying them, Like there's
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: moments where it's just like, are you guys the good guys?
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: I'm having my doubts you should go to an anti
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: bullying seminar.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: I think about that with I don't know why this
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: example like just jumped right to my mind, but there
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: was a similar thing with the bully on Boy Meets
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: World where there was just a lot I vividly remember
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: to the point where it like occurred to me as
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: a child that I'm like, they're being really mean to him.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: They're like making these like fat phobic comments. I think
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: maybe there's one episode where it's like that hurt my
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: feelings the so I guess maybe they called it out
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: at some point and then continued to do it. But yeah,
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: this this franchise is especially and it always like sticks
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: out even more when that's one of the characters few
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: moments on screen at all, Like it's just stating the
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: broad cruel stereotype. And then we don't even see them again.
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: That you flew out, Like yeah, as members that they
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: did not fly out, you flew out Bulkan Skull for
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: what to have them play second fiddle to Fred who
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: we never see again, who nobody knows just because you
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: insert like the hell, yeah.
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: Yeah, Bulkan's skull could fill. I mean, no offense to
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: that kid, but you're like, who fuck is it?
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: That is?
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: Like I'm not convinced that that wasn't like AI like
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: that the most generic ass kids in the entire world.
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: I wanted to say this while I was thinking of
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: it because I went into deep A Repulsal lore because
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: I was like, damn, oh, she's so cool that her
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: original first of all, her grievance is very valid because
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: here's how she enters the show in the pilot. Pulling
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: from scholarly journal Wikipedia here, Rita Repulsa is an evil
- 1:27:16Speaker 3: space which bent on ruling the universe. Being a powerful sorceress,
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: Rita has conquered many worlds a master large collection of
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: monsters and putty patrollers to do her bidding. Origin story.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: Imprisoned in a space dumpster by Zordon, Rita was cast
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: into space, where she would float for ten thousand years
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: before arcing back to the Moon in nineteen ninety three.
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: Once freed by two astronauts, she and her minions reclaimed
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: their headquarters and started a second campaign on Earth to
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: defeat Zordan and take the planet for Lord z now
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: the Lord z thing. I don't know what that means,
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: but she is right to be hell bent on destroying Zordon.
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: He imprisoned her at a space dumpster for ten thousand years.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: That was rude. He should not have done that.
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I also hate there's something like I reject Zordon.
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: I don't like him.
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: No, he freaked me out.
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: I think that Zordon is kind of Heimsibon coded in
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: that he's a creepy weirdo who doesn't do anything, and
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: his whole thing is I do not compensate these young
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: people for their labor, but they do my bidding. Well,
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: I just fucking hang out in a room and collect
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: wealth that is not mine. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: I don't I'm is Zordan canonically a Zionist?
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: I don't know, no, But this is the thing that
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: becomes even worse for the continuity of the show if
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: you follow him movie canon. So in later seasons there
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: are a bunch of other villains that come together. Zordan
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: has one of the Power Rangers spoilers for I guess
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: Power Rangers in Space has the Red New Red Ranger
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: destroy his tube, and when he does, he explodes in
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: like an essence of good Ray that like turns Rita
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: into a normal human, turns the Lord Zet into a
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: normal human, arguably eliminates all evil from the universe because
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: he exploded, And I'm like, that didn't happen in the movie,
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: Like in the movie when his tube exploded, he just died,
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: but like he self sacrifices to save the universe for
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: what because I somehow evil comes back to the universe
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: later when they start to like cross different timelines and
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: play with different show continuities later. But yeah, Jordan seems
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: to be a like typical bad mentor where it's like,
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: you must do this for the greater good. Don't go
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: be a gymnast because then you can't be a power ranger.
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: You can teleport. Why can't she go do her routine
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: on the balance beam and then come back to Angel Grove?
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: Why does he only attack Angel Grove? Like the adult
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: questions you ask, it's just like why Angel Grove? Why
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: the us?
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: Why because it's hell Mouse or something.
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: You're like, why is this villain only attacking Burbank, which.
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: Has been referenced in like newer more meta commentaryan movies
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: where it's like, yeah, he seems to only attack Japan
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: in like a Godzilla movie or in some other thing.
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: It's just like, yeah, but like there's a whole world.
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: Why did Jordan have ivan Ooze buried near his ectomorphicons
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: near his lab instead of on Fatos, on Aquatar, on
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: El Tar, literally anywhere else. It's like bad planning, my guy,
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: what if this fail?
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: I gotta be honest, None of this occurred to me,
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: none of it at all. Wow, No, you're totally right.
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: I watched this and rewatched this way too often, so
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: I'm like, deep, deep deep into lore. No.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: Good, thank you. That's why you're here.
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: We need you.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: Does anyone have anything else they'd like to talk about?
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: I'm sure I do, but I'm gonna stop myself.
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I joke with my friends. I'm like, this is
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: a horror movie. Given how bad the CGI has aged
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: in this movie, Like the footage from the show is
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: so much better age because it's like a person in
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: a like suit. I think still in this season they
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: haven't gone to like animation yet. So just there's some
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: ways that this is not hold up, but it's still
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: a fun, little nostalgic tickle in the brain.
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: True. Yeah, I felt like the bad effects. At this point,
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: I feel kind of nostalgic for this kind of bad effect.
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: It doesn't really bump me because you're just like, this
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: is I do believe this is the best they could
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: do at the time.
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: I've turned around.
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: Oh yeah, the technology just wasn't really there in ninety five.
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: It's just teenagers sitting inside of a screensaver, and I
- 1:31:46Speaker 3: celebrate that beautiful.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: Does the movie past the Bechdel test?
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: It does, with the what are you doing taking care
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: of business? Me to the not sack of the eye
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: of an uh'ze giant robot.
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: Which is plot relevant.
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: Yes, it was like a very plot relevant nineties girl
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: Power pass.
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: True. Do they talk to each other aside from that though?
- 1:32:15Speaker 4: No, But they talked to Dulcia y and then but
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: the context is about Zordan and it's like our leader
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: Zordan said, you know Zordan, it's just like, can we
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: talk about something like the powers? Can we talk? And
- 1:32:27Speaker 4: then they go into ivan ooze and then the boys
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: jump in and so yeah, I don't think Aisha and
- 1:32:32Speaker 4: Kim talk to each other at all.
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: No, which again is just like they're not even doing
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: the bare minimum that they were doing in the show
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: by making the only two girls BFFs, and I was
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: reading I don't know. I was like reading some synopsies
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: about Kimberly and Triney from the original show, and it's
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: so nineties and goofy, where it's like Trainy and Kimberly
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: both start after school clubs and Trainee is more popular,
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: and so Kimberly gets possessed by the jealousy monster. Like
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: you know, it's like all very you know, goofy kind
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: of stuff, but it's it's something where I'm like that
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: that seed particularly drove me up a wall because you're,
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: first of all, you're like waiting for it to maybe
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: pass the Buckfel test and then it doesn't. But I'm like,
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: you guys are standing right next to each other, please
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: just turn your head and speak like it's just it.
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm glad that it wasn't really like
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: this in the show, but in the movie it really
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: does feel like these kids are complete strangers to each other.
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: Yeah, one of your favorite people actually had something to
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: say about that. I'm gonna try to find it. I
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: opened up the tab. Give me one second.
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: What if Alfred Molina was like, I have to say something.
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: About, oh no, this is fully sarcastic your favorite person.
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: Oh oh even better. So there's a Roger Ebert review
- 1:33:49Speaker 3: on this fil Okay, you know what, I at least
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: he covered it. At least he covered it.
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: He gives it half a star, and he starts it
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: mighty morphim power readers. The movie is about as close
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: as you can get to absolute nothing and still have
- 1:34:03Speaker 4: a product to project on the screen. The movie is
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: like those synthetic foods that have no fat, no sugar,
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: no vitamins, and no calories, but they come in bright
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: packages and you can chew them. And he goes on
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: to like comment like we did about how there's no
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: real character because I imagine they anticipated, you're gonna watch
- 1:34:21Speaker 4: the show, You're gonna see the movie. You know these characters,
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: so this is like another adventure there on rather than
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: catering to a new audience that's like who is Tommy,
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: Who is Kimberly, Who is Adam, Aisha Rocky, et cetera.
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, it was like, it is interesting that I
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: was at least happy to see that there are technically
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: characters that are established in the show, But it really
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: this movie is really assuming that you either don't care
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: if there's characters or you already watch the show, which
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: I guess in nineteen ninety five was a reasonable guess,
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: but it makes it very confusing to watch thirty years later.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: Well, I mean, like when you watch the for example,
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: Ninja Turtles movies, those characters are still very distinct from
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: each other and very well defined in the movies, so
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: it's not hard to do, especially if you've already established
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: the personalities of those characters, as you've done in the show.
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: I would say, and it's like, and I'm if I'm
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: remembering correctly, It's like it really is simple enough with
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: the Turtles for it to be like I'm the blank one,
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: Like that's all you really gotta do, But this movie
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: doesn't even really do that, because I'm like, I don't
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: know which what, Like I guess Tommy's the leader one,
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: Kimberly's the pink one, the other the other three or four.
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: I'm like, I have no idea which one you are
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: or yeah, what you do?
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: Yeah? And Billy like it wasn't always the best, but
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: like he was the tech nerd of the group, so
- 1:35:50Speaker 4: he was always like saying very nerdy things, very sciency things,
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: and it's just like you couldn't keep some of that
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: where it's like, oh, we're gonna do something like science
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: like no, even if it's nonsense. Alpha has a bunch
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: of like technological nonsense lines. Billy doesn't get any of that.
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: So it's like the character that was there now he's
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: just boy number five, boy number three, whatever number you
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: want to put him in the order.
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: Really bizarre. I'm like, all this said, I had a
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: great time watching.
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: This is so great. I watched it twice to prepare,
- 1:36:25Speaker 4: revisited the pilot, and watched some of Mister Fusion to
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: to get into the vibe. Great time.
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: Oh wow, thank you, I'm all your work.
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: And also for listeners, it's it's currently on YouTube for free,
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: like you can. You can. You can check it out
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: if you really need to. Like, I don't know, I
- 1:36:43Speaker 3: just I felt very like it's it's it's exactly. You
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: can tell it's gonna be a good movie because it's
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: exactly ninety minutes long with credits. You're like, oh good,
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: they hit it.
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: If you need something to put you in a fugue state, yeah,
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: this will do the trick.
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: It is intense, it is an intense movie. I had
- 1:37:02Speaker 3: a really good time watching it. But you know, I
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: don't know. I mean, the Power Ridges they are still around.
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: I feel like they're possibly in the process of trying
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: to do a larger reboot, because they did. I didn't
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: see it, but I know that, like towards the end
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: of like every reboot had to be Christopher Nolan coded,
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: they did a like dark reboot of The Power Edgers,
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: which of like, did you see that, Carlos did?
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: I fully saw it in theaters and then immediately went
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: to the Toys Arrests because Toys arrest was still open.
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: Went to the Toys Arrests and bought the magazine because
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: I got copied the consumers.
- 1:37:39Speaker 3: It works.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: I had fun with the opens. It was a fun movie.
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: It works. I really. As I was watching yesterday as
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: someone with no nostalgia for this series, I'm like, should
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: I get to read a Repulse to action figure like
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: that could be? I mean, yes, yeah, I should. I
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: think I should. I already I already bought a pad
- 1:37:58Speaker 3: My amidalad do all this year. I can't stop humiliating myself.
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: It's getting bad.
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: I mean it sounds good to be but yeah, there
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: I think Kitlin and I were talking about this off
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: Mike that they are working on a Disney Plus reboot
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: series of the show. And I think there's talks about
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: like once in Always Arranger the reboot or the the
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: sequel movie with like the original Billy and Zach. I
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: think they're talking about doing another version of that, but
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: that could just be like rumor speculation. But yeah, the
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: Rangers live on, The.
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: Rangers Live on, baby, and does Supercenti live on as well?
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: Ooh that I don't know.
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm oh, it's saying nineteen seventy five to present.
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: Oh yeah, wow wow. So there has been a new
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: season of so this is something I found fascinating and
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: I was like, oh, I can't really think of outside
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: of like soaps, like American shows like this. There's been
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: a new season of Supercenti with a new like their
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: antalt Like you're saying, Carl, it's an anthology show with
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: like new characters, new stuff. I think people come back
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: and forth, but like every year since nineteen seventy five,
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: so for over fifty years there has been it is wild. Yeah,
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: and some of them sounded really fun. There's like one
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: season that I watched a like every season of Supercentai
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: explained because I'm really cool, but there was one that
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: was like, there's like one that's like a mystery season,
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: and then I don't know, it just sounds cool. So okay,
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: that's all I have to say.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: I problem, which brings us to the Bechdel Cast nipple scale.
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: Oh boy, oh don't make me do this.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: We have to. Uh, this is our scale where we
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: rate the movie zero to five nipples based on examining
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: it through an intersectional feminist lens. I'll give it one
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: nipple because we see women fighting sometimes question mark, and
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: that's sort of the whole purpose of the show is
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: that these teens are fighting evil and so they let
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: two women do that. Thirty percent of them are girls,
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: so that's nice. But otherwise, with everything we've talked about,
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: this is not an intersexual feminist text, if you can
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: believe it. But I will give it one nipple, and
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: i'll give that nipple to read or pulse the best.
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: Character iconic legend, I'll also give it one nipple. I
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: think the best thing you can say is that the
- 1:40:46Speaker 3: Girl Power Rangers are at least presented as being equally important.
- 1:40:52Speaker 3: They are not as women and girls often are presented
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: as strictly sidekicks or love interests. However, they are still
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: subject to a lot of classic nineties tropes with regard
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: to gender. But also, as we've discussed, this franchise is
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: no stranger to severe racial stereotypes and fat phobic stereotypes
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: and behind the scenes homophobia, and is run by a
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: billionaire zionist and so the you know, issues with this
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: franchise run to its core. It's very of its time.
- 1:41:28Speaker 3: But I don't know, I mean, like watching this, I
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: very much understand its appeal, Like it's it is fucking fun.
- 1:41:36Speaker 3: It starts with people jumping out of a plane for
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: really no reason at all, and it continues to make
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: that exact amount of sense for the entire time. So
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: I'm going to give it one nipple because, like you said, Caitlin,
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: girls are there, and I'm gonna give it to I
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: guess I'm going to give it to Ayisha because she
- 1:41:55Speaker 3: needs something.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: I'm like, she is not given much. Yeah, Carlos, how
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: about you?
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: Oh, the nostalgia wants to go higher because like I
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: feel like I'm Caitlin's rampometer.
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: This is like for me, off the charts this is so.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: Good, so fun. The nostalgia, I want to give this
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: super high, but given the stuff we talked about, I
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: don't think that's fair. As a listener who like listens
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: to every episode, I'm like, why did they rate this
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: so high? Like I understand the nostalgia, but like, and
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: part of me wants to be that person right now.
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: You're welcome to me too. You're like, it's no judgment,
- 1:42:38Speaker 3: we do that all the time.
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing. The Nipple scale is the end
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: all be all thit in. If you miss this.
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: Up changes the course of history every time.
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: So follow your heart.
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: I think the best I could do. I'm like edging
- 1:42:57Speaker 4: between like two and a half and three. I think
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: you do have rita sort of sidelined, which is not great.
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: You do have Kimberly and Aisha doing a lot of
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: cool stuff. They get damseled a bunch. There's no real equivalent.
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: I think Rocky's in trouble a couple of times and
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: one of the other guys has to save it, but
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: never one of the girls has to save him, which
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: could have been a fun little twist. You have Dulcia,
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: who on paper Master Warrior fade Us nobody can get
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: to this power. She defends people from like trying to
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: start down the path, saves them from the tengu She
- 1:43:34Speaker 4: becomes an owl, which is dope, etc. But that she's
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: like half undressed, which like she's in a tropical climate.
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: I guess, but like why did we need to do that?
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: We did it, But also I mean this is a
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: climate where Ayisha is wearing a hoodie and uh Dulcia
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: is wearing nothing and the owl, well, the owl's completely naked.
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: So also if she's like this like warrior, that outfit
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: is not providing very much much protection.
- 1:44:00Speaker 3: No, that is not armor, and she's not that powerful
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: because she's like if I leave this room, I will
- 1:44:06Speaker 3: turn into But can the owl leave?
- 1:44:09Speaker 4: I don't know, unclear because we see the owl still there.
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: And so kind of a useless power when you think
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: about it. If the owl also can't go anywhere.
- 1:44:19Speaker 4: It's like you cannot cross this part of the island
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: or the world, Like how does that work? Is like
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: the whole planet this one continent, it's unclear we can
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: keep going.
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: I wasn't seeing food there, Like what does she sustain it?
- 1:44:31Speaker 6: On?
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: What did the rangers eat?
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: Well, they ate the dinosaurs, and that's why their skelet tense.
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: I get to be fair. I think I'll end a
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: little lower. I think I'll just go two, two nipples.
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: I'm gonna give one to Aisha because I want to
- 1:44:50Speaker 4: boogie with the bear another pass. I was thinking about
- 1:44:54Speaker 4: what we were raiding when Kimberly is caught in the
- 1:44:57Speaker 4: electromagnetic deadlock from Ooze. He's like, oh my god, I
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: need help. I'm burning up in here. He's just like, girl,
- 1:45:03Speaker 4: use your thrusters, and I'm just like, oh, yes, true,
- 1:45:08Speaker 4: which saves Kimberly's life arguably.
- 1:45:11Speaker 3: I'm like, why didn't she remember? I don't know, but
- 1:45:14Speaker 3: her friend was there?
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: Yep. So two nipples for one for Asia, and I
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: guess Kimberly, yeah, yeah, oh no, we got to give
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: it to Fred character Kimberly. Kimberly gets a second.
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: That would be funny, like.
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: Nipple Fred illegal.
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: Friend, and then Fred's like, goofy ass, Dad, being like
- 1:45:42Speaker 3: I love you son, and having that be kind of
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: the last thing You're like, who are these people?
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: Right after a no Home a moment from Bulk and Skull,
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: because it's nineteen ninety five, like Bulk goes to hugs
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: skull because they're not dead. They saved the day. And
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: then he's like, hand up, shakes his hand.
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: I totally. That's so funny that I feel like they're
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: doing some sort of nineteen ninety five Bingo card at
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: the end where they're like, oh, we didn't do a
- 1:46:04Speaker 3: no homo moment. We didn't have a father saying I
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: love you son, like and then and Van Halen song,
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: We're good. There's a time.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: There's also a moment where I've an ooze and then
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: what's the gargoyle looking gold goldar. They're both discussing their
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: crush on a teenage girl. They're like, oh, Kimberly, the
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: pink one's so cute? Am I RIGHTO? You're like, you're like,
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: that is a teenager and you're thousands of years old.
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: That said Ivenu's top ten cinema characters I've ever seen.
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: Him.
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: Yes, he put his whole ivan as into that part.
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: I we didn't deserve the amount of effort that he
- 1:46:53Speaker 3: put into it. I'm glad we got it well.
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: Carlos, thank you for joining us for yet another OOZ movie.
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: Come back for more OOZ movies or something else. I guess,
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: but but I was. I found a Reddit thread and
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: me going on Reddit, it's so scary to me.
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: Good for you.
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: But I found a thread called slime, Sludge and Goo
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: on movies. So there's so many things we could choose from.
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: We've got to come back and discuss. But thank you
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: so much for being here. Tell us where we can
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: follow you and anything you'd like to plug.
- 1:47:33Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you so much for having me. I love
- 1:47:36Speaker 4: coming on the show, love listening. You've introduced me to
- 1:47:39Speaker 4: so many cool guests over the years. It's been great. Yeah.
- 1:47:43Speaker 4: I'm on Instagram still for the time being metas awful
- 1:47:49Speaker 4: Zuckerbergish trash. But yeah, Carlos creates twenty eighteen on Instagram
- 1:47:54Speaker 4: on Blue Sky. Those are like my two major social
- 1:48:00Speaker 4: media places. I have a podcast called The Horror Agenda
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: where we cover horror movies mainly, but we also cover
- 1:48:08Speaker 4: horror podcast comics, and we do a lot of short
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: films which a lot of people don't give enough love to,
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: which has been really great. And that's The Horror Agenda
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: on Instagram and wherever you get your podcasts.
- 1:48:21Speaker 3: Thank you so much for coming back. Yeah, we can't
- 1:48:23Speaker 3: wait to see what you bring us next, there's some
- 1:48:26Speaker 3: there's I have. I want to send me that, send
- 1:48:29Speaker 3: me that, Lin, Kitlin, I want to know the others.
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: Movies will do well And we could even include it
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: in the description of this episode.
- 1:48:37Speaker 4: What should I come back for?
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:48:39Speaker 3: Yeah, you have to start thinking now, all right? Well, uh,
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: we used and we lost, well, Bye bye. The Bechdel
- 1:48:54Speaker 3: Cast is a production of iHeartMedia, hosted and produced by Me,
