- 0:00Welcome to North Shore News and Interviews on Amherst Island Radio.
- 0:12Each week we keep you updated on newsworthy events, happenings, and conversations that
- 0:18we've had with people in the local community and beyond.
- 0:25The WJ Henderson Recreation Center will be open on Saturday, September 21 for the start
- 0:30of the 2024-2025 ice season.
- 0:33Loyalist Township is inviting residents to celebrate the reopening with a free public
- 0:37skate on Sunday, September 22 between 11am and noon.
- 0:41The free skate is being offered in lieu of the sneak peek that was originally planned
- 0:45for September 20.
- 0:47While the arena is reopening on September 21, there are still many more facility improvements
- 0:51on the way.
- 0:52Recreation is still in progress in many areas of the recreation center.

- 1:49Loyalist Township has launched a new online engagement platform for members of the public.
- 1:53The Engage Loyalist platform features a number of initiatives that the Township has opened
- 1:58up for public input.
- 1:59Along with each initiative, users can find background information, current statistics,
- 2:04a project timeline, and see who among Township staff will be hearing their input.
- 2:09Councillor Paul Proderick explains the idea behind Engage Loyalist and notes some of the
- 2:13current initiatives on the platform.
- 2:16Engage Loyalist is just one of the many methods that we are trying to use to communicate with
- 2:20the local population.
- 2:22They can learn about the projects ongoing, give feedback on some of the initiatives that
- 2:25happen in the Township.
- 2:28With the local media and the loss of the newsprint, we have to be proactive versus reactive in
- 2:34some of our planning.
- 2:37To give people an idea of what's on the site right now, you've got the Waste Management
- 2:41Master Plan that people can comment on, the Ward Boundary Review, which will be hopefully
- 2:45in place for the next election, Babcock Mill, the Reading Garden, Main Street, that bath,
- 2:51the reconstruction, the changes in public transit that just happened in the last week
- 2:55or so.
- 2:56One that I would encourage people to comment on is the 2025 budget process as we move through
- 3:01it.
- 3:02A lot of times people maybe have questions, but usually it's after the fact, well after
- 3:06it's established, I'm still getting questions about some spending, and that's six months,
- 3:12eight months later, so get involved and engage loyalists.
- 3:15It's just one of the many ways we try to engage with the local population.
- 3:19The platform asks users to sign up in order to have their say and stay up to date.

- 3:38The Great Lakes Islands Alliance announced its first ever strategic plan spanning to
- 3:422034.
- 3:44The plan looks to address challenges facing Great Lakes Islands, such as emergency preparedness
- 3:48and general communications.
- 3:50The main focus of the plan is building the Great Lakes Islands Alliance into the go-to
- 3:54connector organization for the island communities involved.
- 3:58Member of the Amherst Island Community Alliance, David Pickering, notes one of the more important
- 4:02issues the island has taken on since becoming a member of the Great Lakes Islands Alliance.
- 4:07One of the things that we've discussed in detail at the Community Alliance was a report
- 4:14from one of the islander islands that actually did an emergency exercise for one of their
- 4:21islands and found that it failed miserably because of poor communications, lack of interoperability,
- 4:32and a variety of other things that meant that they couldn't achieve the exercise objectives
- 4:39and it sort of came as a big call to wake up and start over again and come up with a better
- 4:46emergency plan because this didn't work.
- 4:49And certainly that in itself is encouraging the Community Alliance to discuss with the
- 4:59new fire chief as well as the township the state of emergency planning for Amherst Island.
- 5:08Pickering explains how Amherst Islands representative at the Great Lakes Islands Alliance, Paul Juniper,
- 5:13brought back the idea of a winter carnival.
- 5:15Probably the most significant was the entire winter carnival.
- 5:20Paul arrived at one of the meetings for the Community Alliance and said, here is the schedule
- 5:29for the winter carnival.
- 5:32They are now doing their 56th annual one.
- 5:36Maybe we could put something together and the Community Alliance hit the various service
- 5:43organizations like Ames and the Museum and the Women's Institute and so on.
- 5:50And everybody said, well, we can sponsor, support this particular event.
- 5:58And they turned around and they made it into a program and they invited people.
- 6:03And apparently it was quite successful.
- 6:06The Alliance's leadership team developed the plan over the last year.
- 6:10The four primary goals in the Alliance's foundational charter helped shape the creation
- 6:14of the plan.
- 6:15The four goals are facilitating connection between island communities, improving information
- 6:20access, encouraging multi-island collaboration, and amplifying island voices.
- 6:26With the new plan, the Alliance also looks to improve its environmental and socioeconomic
- 6:30program areas, central operations and capacity, and long-term sustainability.
- 6:36While mainly focusing on island communities, the Alliance also recognizes the importance
- 6:40of raising awareness of island life among mainland audiences, including governments
- 6:44and the general public.
- 6:46The Great Lakes Islands Alliance is set to host its fifth summit this year from September
- 6:5022 to 25, near the Lae-Chinot Islands of Northern Lake Huron.
- 6:54The summit provides an opportunity for islanders from around the Great Lakes to come together
- 6:58to learn about each other's communities and share solutions to the various economic, social,
- 7:03and environmental challenges facing islands.
- 7:06This year's event will feature more than 20 speakers, panel discussions, and guided tours.
- 7:10The event will cover a range of topics including tourism, island schools, youth engagement,
- 7:16media, biodiversity, and emergency preparedness.

- 9:07The first ever Bath Art Fest is taking place Saturday, September 14th, hosted by the Hive
- 9:12Artist Collective in Centennial Park.
- 9:15Over 30 artists will be featured from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. alongside live music.
- 9:19One of the owners of the hive, Amanda Lloyd, explains how the day will be set up.
- 9:23We're setting it up a little differently than other art festivals.
- 9:26We're calling it kind of like a home village vibe.
- 9:29So all of the tents are going to be on the perimeter of the park and facing the center
- 9:34and then in the center is going to be the music.
- 9:36We're going to have this painting for kids.
- 9:39We have a big raffle.
- 9:40Most of the hive artists have donated a piece to be raffled off.
- 9:45Lloyd describes some of the other types of vendors that will be at the event.
- 9:48We have jewelers.
- 9:49We have ceramists.
- 9:50We have potters.
- 9:52We have some fabric artists, too, who are going to be there.
- 9:56So you can shop your heart's content there and then maybe wander down into the village
- 10:01for some coffee and some food and some more shopping experience.
- 10:07Lloyd explains the experience they hope to create and notes some of the local businesses
- 10:11involved.
- 10:12It's a village day.
- 10:13That's what we just want everyone to come out and hang out at the village.
- 10:16Have a hang out by the water, you know, to bring the kids down.
- 10:18We really want people to come in, check out local artists, but then take a stroll down
- 10:25to the village because we wouldn't be able to run this without the businesses who kind
- 10:31of have sponsored us.
- 10:33So we're hoping people will go down to the commons, books on mean, the lodge for coffee.
- 10:39Lloyd also noted they hope to make it an annual event.
- 10:42Bath Art Fest will take place rain or shine.

- 12:27The goal really is to celebrate the unique taste of place of southeastern Ontario.
- 12:32All the chefs that are featured at the Feast On the Farm event are Feast On certified.
- 12:38So really we're celebrating chefs that are going the extra mile to source seasonal and

- 12:48And really we just want to take this time to celebrate that.
- 12:51It's harvest season.
- 12:53It's all you can eat.
- 12:55So inviting folks to come on out and eat and taste how much better things taste when they're
- 13:01in season.
- 13:02Mueller notes the range of local beverages that will be on hand as well.
- 13:05I do want to shout out our local drink producers.
- 13:07Of course McKinnon Brothers Brewing, they're hosting us.
- 13:09So we will be serving up their craft beverages as well as craft wine from Carlow Estates Winery
- 13:15in Prince Edward County, Hardway Cider, and Mohawk Soda.
- 13:20So it should be a real all around great time.
