Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome back to the Letterbox podcast, where real
- 0:03letters from real people are shared, one letter at a time.
- 0:10Today's letter was written by Neve and she wrote it last week
- 0:15when she was on a flight to Newfoundland, Canada, just
- 0:18before beginning a remarkable challenge, a solo hike of nearly
- 0:23700 kilometres to raise money and awareness for mental health
- 0:28charities. On the 1st of March 2024, Neve
- 0:35attempted to take her own life. Incredibly, only five months
- 0:40later, she completed a solo through hike of Newfoundland's
- 0:44East Coast Trail, raising an incredible amount of money for
- 0:48Canadian mental health initiatives.
- 0:51Today, as you listen to this letter, Neve is currently on day
- 0:57four of an even bigger challenge.
- 1:00She is back on the East Coast Trail, hiking there and back,
- 1:04covering nearly 700 kilometres. Today's letter isn't actually
- 1:10about the hike, but she wrote it about her experience with mental
- 1:13health and has written to anybody who is questioning
- 1:16whether they should still be here.
- 1:20Before I read you this letter and you learn more about Neve's
- 1:24story, I would love for you to take a moment to just press the
- 1:29follow button wherever you are listening.
- 1:30And if you haven't already rated the podcast, that would be
- 1:33amazing as well. And if you could think of
- 1:37somebody in your life who you love who might like to hear this
- 1:40letter, or perhaps more importantly, needs to hear this
- 1:45letter, I would love for you to consider sharing it with them.
- 1:50And as always, if hearing other people's stories inspires you to
- 1:53tell one of your own, I'd love to hear from you.
- 1:57You can find details of how to contact me in the show notes.
- 2:01But now we're going to read newsletter.
- 2:05For one reason or another, you're fed up with just about
- 2:09everything. Your job, school, your family,
- 2:14your love life, even yourself. You can't seem to do anything
- 2:21right, and any ounce of grace for yourself is nowhere to be
- 2:26found. You've drawn the conclusion that
- 2:29the world would be better off if you were no longer part of it,
- 2:33and nothing anyone says or does can change your mind.
- 2:41I know you don't know me, but I'm asking you to trust me when
- 2:45I say that I know you. I've been you.
- 2:50I've woken up day after day wishing I hadn't.
- 2:55I've gone through the motions of life and done just well enough
- 3:00that nobody worried about me. I've also come out the other
- 3:05side. Sometimes, even now, I find
- 3:09myself wondering why I'm still here after everything I've been
- 3:14through. What is my purpose?
- 3:17What am I supposed to do with this second chance?
- 3:22On Monday night, I knew for sure.
- 3:27By Tuesday morning I'd already completely changed my mind.
- 3:33By Thursday afternoon, I was convinced there was no reason at
- 3:37all, just pure luck. I hope you'll at least try to
- 3:44believe me when I say there isn't one specific thing that's
- 3:47keeping you here. That's the cool part about life.
- 3:51You get to choose your own adventure.
- 3:55Maybe you're in a different city every week, meeting new people
- 3:59with all kinds of stories, some similar to your own.
- 4:05Maybe you're having those once in a lifetime experiences you
- 4:08always dreamed about, or listening to music that makes
- 4:11you feel grateful you're still around to hear it.
- 4:14Maybe you're eating food that almost tastes too good to be
- 4:17true at restaurants you've never even heard of.
- 4:21Maybe you met someone. And by someone, I mean the
- 4:25person who turned your world upside down.
- 4:29The person whose eyes seem to hold your entire future and
- 4:33everything beyond it. The person you can call when
- 4:37your brain turns on you and you can't hold yourself together
- 4:40alone anymore. Maybe you finally saved up
- 4:46enough money and quit the job you hate.
- 4:50Maybe you bought a used van from Facebook Marketplace and
- 4:52converted it all by yourself in a friend's driveway 1 summer,
- 4:56insisting you didn't need any help.
- 4:59You learned everything as you went from YouTube videos posted
- 5:03before you were even old enough to drive.
- 5:06And now you're living life on the road.
- 5:08A different breathtaking view every couple of days, unfamiliar
- 5:14with trails to explore the time of your life.
- 5:20Or maybe it's none of those things and you still have no
- 5:26idea what you're doing. That's OK too.
- 5:32I know you've probably put immense pressure on yourself to
- 5:35have it all figured out by now, but the truth is that even
- 5:40people who seem to have it together are still learning
- 5:42every single day, just like you and me.
- 5:50My therapist has said this to me more times than I can count.
- 5:53But you can't see the forest through the trees.
- 5:57You're so focused on justifying your existence, you can't enjoy
- 6:01simply being in whatever moment you're in.
- 6:06Maybe there's a reason, maybe there isn't.
- 6:12Maybe you'll find it, maybe you won't.
- 6:17Either way, you're OK. You deserve to feel safe, and if
- 6:25nobody's told you lately, I'm so happy you're here.
- 6:30I hope that one day you're happy to be here too.
- 6:40For right now, put your feet on the floor.
- 6:44Take a breath, take it one single moment at a time.
- 6:52You've got this, all the love in the world.
- 7:02Someone still wondering and OK with it.
- 7:10Thank you so so much Neve. That letter was incredible and I
- 7:16know was written with so much emotion and genuine care for

- 7:32incredible and special it is that people are so willing to
- 7:35share their stories with me and all of you listeners.
- 7:40We've had so many letters from people who are so brave in
- 7:43putting out their story just in the hopes of helping someone
- 7:46else feel less alone, and that makes the Letterbox Podcast so,
- 7:51so special. So thank you again Neve for
- 7:53writing in. It's been lovely to get to know
- 7:56you and to follow you story. And for everybody listening, I
- 7:59want you to know that this is not the last time we are going
- 8:03to hear from Neve. Once she has completed her
- 8:06amazing adventure, she's going to come back with another letter
- 8:10reflecting on her journey. So if you want to follow Neve in
- 8:15the meantime, you'll find a link to her Instagram in the show
- 8:17notes. She's documenting every step of
- 8:20the hike. So head over to her page not
- 8:22only to experience the breathtaking beauty of
- 8:26Newfoundland and the East Coast Trail, but to cheer her on and
- 8:29support her as she takes on this extraordinary challenge in
- 8:33support of mental health charities.
- 8:34And make sure as well that you are following the podcast so you
- 8:37don't miss when the next letter comes out.
- 8:40And if hearing this today has encouraged you to your own
- 8:43thoughts into words, I would love to read a letter from you.
- 8:48Your letter can be about absolutely anything.
