Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Do our trading partners care about our climate goals?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This idea that our trading partners will somehow punish us
- 0:02Speaker 1: for lacking ambition on climate change, I don't think passes
- 0:05Speaker 1: the sniff test. Yes, there are some provisions and some agreements,
- 0:09Speaker 1: but they're vaguely worded enough that you can drive around them.
- 0:13Speaker 1: If the UK, or the EU, or even the Aussies
- 0:15Speaker 1: really wanted to punish us, they could. The question is
- 0:18Speaker 1: whether they would not could and why would they were
- 0:21Speaker 1: a fraction of global emissions, what difference does it make anyway?
- 0:24Speaker 1: But most importantly it'd be pot kettle black from them
- 0:28Speaker 1: the Aussis, and we covered this at the time. So
- 0:30Speaker 1: they set their target of sixty two to seventy percent
- 0:32Speaker 1: reduction on two thousand five levels last month. That was
- 0:37Speaker 1: lower than they were forecast to do. They were criticized
- 0:40Speaker 1: by green groups it was contrary to advice from their
- 0:44Speaker 1: equivalent of the Climate Change Commission. Naughty naughty tisk tisc
- 0:48Speaker 1: In the UK, Star is being told to prepare the
- 0:50Speaker 1: government buildings there for temperatures of two degrees higher than
- 0:53Speaker 1: normal rather than the one point five limit that everyone's
- 0:56Speaker 1: hoping but failing to achieve. And the Big Four aren't
- 0:58Speaker 1: exactly doing their bit either. Just this morning, another new
- 1:02Speaker 1: climate report, because we get one every day. Guess what,
- 1:06Speaker 1: a record amount of emissions, the largest increase in modern
- 1:11Speaker 1: measurements since the nineteen fifties when we started doing that.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So it's not like the rest of the world is
- 1:16Speaker 1: covered in glory. It's a dog eat dog world out
- 1:19Speaker 1: there and everyone's basically up for themselves. In New Zealand,
- 1:21Speaker 1: there's no exception. Does this mean the government's made the
- 1:24Speaker 1: right call? Can they saddle up on a high horse. No,
- 1:28Speaker 1: But it also doesn't mean we're about to get sued
- 1:30Speaker 1: or blocked by our trading partners. For more from Early
- 1:34Speaker 1: Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to News Talks. It'd
- 1:37Speaker 1: be from five am weekdays, or follow the podcast on iHeartRadio.
