- 2:05episode of the Adventures of Philip marlow The Grim Hunters. It was a hunt
- 2:14through a jungle of city streets, with danger waiting at every inter section,
- 2:17until halfway through, when the hunters became the hunted and death brought an end
- 2:23to the game. From the pen, the Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of
- 2:28crime fiction, comes as most famous character as CBS presents The Adventures of Philip
- 2:34Marlowe now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe. We bring you tonight's exciting
- 2:47story, The Grim Hunters. The morning paper at headline prices rising. My
- 3:12bank statement in the afternoon mail had worn, balance falling, and I had
- 3:15wasted the evening and the half of a client who ran out on me when
- 3:19I tried to collect, all of which added up to the end of the
- 3:22day and me unhappy in my office at ten pm with one hand on my
- 3:25check book, and the other one raised in almost solemn mode, I Philip
- 3:30Marlow, private detective and too often public servant, hereby resolved to one way
- 3:35or another, jockey might budget into something close to equilibrium. And from this
- 3:39day for Hello Marlow speaking, my name is Helen Palmer Marlow. I need
- 3:45your help badly. Yeah, but look, I'm up at eighty seven hundred
- 3:46Magnolia Terrace in the Hollywood Hills. Now please drop whatever you're doing. In
- 3:51no, no, I must have let go of the phone, grabbed my
- 4:02hat and coat open and closed the office door, piled into my car outside,
- 4:05and raced up into the Hollywood Hills. Because the next thing I remember
- 4:09after Helen Palmers screamed was swinging off North Bronson Drive on the Magnolia Terrace.
- 4:15But a minute later, when I scratched to a stop away from number eighty
- 4:17seven hundred, scrambled out from nt of the wheel and started on the run
- 4:20for the front door, I was no longer sure of anything. Because the
- 4:25house in question of stock Southern Mansion, complete with stable boy statue in the
- 4:28gravel driveway, which according to the book, should have been as dark and
- 4:31as quiet as the inside of a coffin. There was anything else but and
- 4:35when I got to the oversized bronze door knocker and dropped it high, I
- 4:39was beginning to doubt that I had the right address. Can I be a
- 4:44some assistant, sir, I don't know. I'm looking for a woman named
- 4:46Helen Palmer who called me my office said she needed help, And a second
- 4:50after that, she screamed, tell me, sir, what is your name?
- 4:57An occupation? That order? Philip Marlow private detective good My, Helen
- 5:02good happy? Aren't you what's going on here? What is that? Why
- 5:05it it's a party, sir, a scavenger hunt. It looks like Helen
- 5:10Palmer's Oh wait a minute, laughing boy, I had a call and was
- 5:12interrupted by pistol shots and I all just part of the place. Yeah,
- 5:15Helen Palmer had to bring that one, detective. Yeah, you see Marlow.
- 5:23Each list, aside from the usual heart to find objects, had a
- 5:26human being on it. That's right. I had to bring back a Hoover
- 5:30vacuum cleaner salesman. And believe it or not, he's already sol a good
- 5:33host that he's going that he looks smart. Yes, they did it,
- 5:39man. You see mister Marlow. Helen Palmer wasn't permitted to actually hire you.
- 5:44That's why she had to pretend to be in trouble with an that result
- 5:46that I nearly broke my neck getting up here, mister Grove, where is
- 5:49miss Palmer? I don't know for sure, Marlow. She called just a
- 5:53bit ago and said that she only had to catch on to you and one
- 5:56other eye. I'm going to be back after that, the winnness tomorl because
- 6:00none of us did better than half Ireland. Oh, by the bye,
- 6:02you don't have them, have the breechlock of a fifty seven millimeters out of
- 6:05tank gun with you at the moment. No, now do I have time
- 6:09for scavenger hunters, Not even when they most cordially invite you in with the
- 6:13finest servant, a potestyle Southern fried chicken. Imagine the come on, no,
- 6:17I'm sorry, it's delicious chicken. Well, okay, the chicken did
- 6:21it. The inside of Patty as Groven's house was also a stock Southern mansion.
- 6:30From a giant cut glass punch bowl belonged to my mother's first lady,
- 6:32Atlanta, Georgia, to a white and winding colonial staircase it left your expecting
- 6:39the descent of Scarlet O'Hara at any moment. There was one strange note in
- 6:43the soft southern surroundings, filed three feet high in the middle of the room
- 6:46with the crazy quote results of evening scavenger hunt, including a wooden cigar store
- 6:50Indian, a pair of hiccocks, suspenders from the local fire chief, one
- 6:55red motorcycle, a stuffed owl, a set of antlers, and more.
- 7:00And behind all that, my counterparts bring him back a live items from each
- 7:03list, a streetcar conductor in uniform, a waiter ball and under forty a
- 7:09school teacher redheaded in over fifty. But I was the center of attention.
- 7:13But that he has introduced one after another of the guests of the genuine and
- 7:15one hundred percent non shrinkable Private Detective and now miss Marlow's a very special friend
- 7:21of mine. At thirty one saw the president of Sample and Clayborne best building
- 7:27contact is in the city of Los Angeles. That's so very interesting, mister
- 7:30Grover. Oh but mister Marlowe sampled made it right to the top in the
- 7:33past two years. Uh huh yeah, ever since old Joshua Claiborne got killed
- 7:38following off of scaffold he did costs between you and me and the Gate Post.
- 7:42Some folks say it was suicide. Oh larry that boy. I'd like
- 7:46you to meet mister Marlowe private detective, Mister Marlowes, Sam, how do
- 7:49you do allow? Mister Marlowe. Glad you're with us. Hey, Peneus
- 7:54has run to call it in it. Last time I heard from her was
- 7:56when we split our list in two and she headed out after a Latin America
- 8:00and Rumber team. Well, if she might have to bot, you bring
- 8:03her back. That's ryn to like me. We're speaking of mister Marlowe.
- 8:07Lies Lady Bress, nicest person I know, chef, because my fiance,
- 8:11Helen, Helen is in Palmer my patron, mister Grove, yees go the
- 8:16end the scenes. Well, we said they have a lot of fun,
- 8:18even if we don't make much money of a yeah you sent me, mister
- 8:22Grove. It just sain't money most surely did bar you know dollars and ten?
- 8:26Yes, Well, gentlemen, you'll excuse me please, but I do
- 8:28have to run. Good night, mister Sample and mister Grover. Thought it's
- 8:31been a distinct pleasure. Thought I did you goodbye? THU goodbuye your God.
- 8:45When I got back to my office, which I had left flights on
- 8:46and unlocked, my telephone was ringing at this late hour, gullible Meat took
- 8:50faint hope that it could be a client who might still save the day.
- 8:54When I picked up the receiver, Marlowe, I let go of that straw
- 8:56fast, Marlowe. It was the technical Lieu Tenanty, Bara marlow Do you
- 9:00know a girl named Helen Palmer? Ellen? Hey, Bara, don't tell
- 9:03me there's a pair of somewhat flat feet on the ladies scavengjeohn plaz very funny,
- 9:07Phil, How do you know her? No? Not beyond a panic
- 9:09telephone call that ended to make the Lieves scream in a couple of pistol shots,
- 9:13all designed to bring me running to a party at eighty seven hundred magnolia
- 9:16terras. Well, that AD's all right because the only item is not checked
- 9:20off the list or a night watchman's badge and one detective private which must be
- 9:26you, is your name is circle in the classified directory? Here in this
- 9:28phone booth, here in what phone booth? Where are you? Barra at
- 9:31a close filling station on Vanassaw Hollywood Boulevard. Wait a minute, why is
- 9:35a girl's list there with you? Because it's clenching a right hand filled and
- 9:39she's folded up on the floor of this booth dead. No two bullet holes
- 9:43in her back. Oh yeah, but but Ibarra, her call was a
- 9:46gag. The shots weren't Anyhow, it looks like a stick up since the
- 9:50lady's purse is gone. And who we who? A whino we picked up?
- 9:54So what he calls a curly headed guy with short legs do it and
- 9:56run? Also, the whino says it Murder had been hanging around for a
- 10:01couple of hours, like he was looking for a well to do prospect.
- 10:03Yeah, I know, but it's still kind of strange me getting that call.
- 10:05I mean, well, I'll drop around a headquarters tomorrow morning, Lieutenant.
- 10:09If you need any statement from me, I think you'd better make that
- 10:11tonight. Phil at the eighty seven hundred address. I'm sending money up there
- 10:15now. Oh but wait a minute, I borrow. You don't need me,
- 10:16and I do need business. If you think I'm gonna get it by
- 10:18Phil, huh, Phil, Let's say that I'd appreciate it if you'd show
- 10:22for a few minutes. Okay, No, well, okay, a few
- 10:26minutes, just so long as you appreciate it. Goodbye. Driving back to
- 10:39Magnolia terrorists, I used Detective Lieutenant E. Burrough as an oversized whipping boy
- 10:43for the day's disappointments. So when I finally break to a stop behind a
- 10:46half part squad car, which meant that police Officer Mooney was already on hand,
- 10:50I was about back to normal. Then in the next quick moment I
- 10:54forgot all about it, Bara, because in the shadows ahead, stinking away
- 10:58from a side entrance to the Number seven, looking as guilty as Lucretia boys,
- 11:03you're leaving a corner Pharmacy was a young lady, brunette and beautiful.
- 11:07She hurried directly to a gray ash parked in the rear, and without looking
- 11:11back, climbed in and took off following her had to be more fun in
- 11:15conversation with Mooney. Ten minutes later, the lady came to a stop in
- 11:26front of a dark, politely landscaped cottage on North Ogden Drive. Another two
- 11:31she was inside and the light was on. When I got to the front
- 11:33door and leaned against the bell and card over it said that this could be
- 11:37one Ronda Langley, mister Larry Sample's girlfriend. That same card also gave another
- 11:43name, Helen Palmer. The lady denbou rang again. When the door opened.
- 11:50Was the brunette still beautiful, only this time something had been added in
- 11:54her right hand forty five ugly and pointed straight at my head? What do
- 11:58you want one straight answer, miss Langley? Why did you run away from
- 12:03maybe seven hundred Magnolia terrorists? The cop with routine questions, Wait a minute,
- 12:07who are you? How do you know my name? I'm a private
- 12:09detective label Philip Marlow idem number eight on the late Miss Palmer's list. And
- 12:15I know about you because I've already been to Thadeus Grover's party. How after
- 12:18you put this gun away? We'll get back to my question. Why'd you
- 12:22run? Come on, talk lady now before I yell copyright, come in
- 12:28night to morrow. I don't think Helen Palmer's murder was any run of the
- 12:33mill, Robert, you don't think what I stayed just long enough to hear
- 12:35the policeman say Helen had been killed. When I got to you, welcome,
- 12:39mat I was greeted with a forty five talk some more, Miss Langley,
- 12:43real playing like that. We have a chance, will you. I
- 12:46didn't say anything to the police about this because I don't want to do any
- 12:48damage before I'm sure about a few things like what like the kind of a
- 12:52mess that Helen was in, Mister Marlow, I need help. I've got
- 12:56to know some facts. Please, but you work for me. I'll pay
- 12:58you anything. Well, at this point, let's call anything twenty five at
- 13:03d in expenses. Huh about Helen and the Mesha spoke of how much do
- 13:05you know? Very little? Only that I think Helen was blackmailing somebody,
- 13:09somebody who was at the party tonight by grovery your boyfriend, Larry Sample,
- 13:13I don't know. You've got to believe me, Mistermorrow. Well, all
- 13:16right, for the time being, I will now, first of all,
- 13:20how'd you lash out of this blackmail? But yesterday morning I accidentally overheard Helen
- 13:24talking to someone on the telephone. She spoke of a payoff that was to
- 13:26be made at Sadius's party. I don't know who she was talking to,
- 13:30but she warned the person not to try anything. Rats in murder she didn't
- 13:33say, but she did say that she'd already emailed a letter to her lawyers
- 13:37in San Francisco that would protect her from any harm, and she laughed about
- 13:41the scheduled scavenger hunt and hung up. M you said nothing to her about
- 13:45this? Huh? What was it? Creat? All right? The letter
- 13:48to San Francisco? Do you see aim mailer? I mailed it myself earlier
- 13:50in the day, along with one of my own. I didn't think about
- 13:52it until after her call, when she pointedly asked me if I'd remembered to
- 13:56mail a letter, my letter that is, which she knew that I'd written
- 14:00to an aunt. I have him to say it New Jersey. Well,
- 14:03that's the whole story you want me, I'll be over at Satty. It's
- 14:07it's place, that is. Yes, he was in love with Helen.
- 14:11Yeah, maybe she was a returning met in love with blackmail. What do
- 14:15you think, Ronda? I don't know. The thinking is now your job,
- 14:20mister Marlow. But I left Ronda Langley and started back to my cause.
- 14:28A bona fide private detective with client, wasn't sure whether or not I
- 14:31was happy about the whole thing. A second later, at the sight of
- 14:35a man and the doctor had half crouched behind a tree. I quit deliberating
- 14:39the point and get ready for trouble, because one I could see the gentleman
- 14:43in hiding had both the curly hair and very short legs that he borrow I
- 14:45had mentioned as a sign of Helen Thomas Killer. I kept walking straight until
- 14:48I was abreast the trees, and I pivoted sharply, took one step,
- 14:52taught him and swa, haven't got that time. They believe me if we
- 15:01will leave me alone, sure right, we'll after you start talking. Now
- 15:05get up, okay, okay, don't hit you again, I'll talk.
- 15:09I'll tell you hey, hey, look no, no, don't oh that
- 15:16Losy Nott. In just a moment, we will return to the second act
- 15:33of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. But first you can do a lot of

- 16:18returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story The Grim Hunters.
- 16:34When the shots crashed out of the darkness, the life ran out of the
- 16:37little man like air from a kid's balloon. I couldn't figure exactly where the
- 16:41shots had come from, and I stopped trying when a pair of spiked heels
- 16:45clicked fast across the concrete driveway between me and the house, and a modus
- 16:48tartted in the second Later cod roughed by was Ronda Langley at the wheel.
- 16:52I yelled at it as stop as she went why and ran out on the
- 16:56street after and yelled again at the re trading car, but she ignored me.
- 17:00When another car came round the curve behind me, I tried to flag
- 17:03it down with the drive it eat even slow up. I just stood there
- 17:07while the two cars twisted out of sight down the winding street, eating nothing
- 17:11but silence and a lot of unanswered questions hanging in mid air. Walked back
- 17:15to the cops, went over carefully, but there was no identification, nothing
- 17:21but a gun to indicate how he fitted into the screwy mosaic of murders,
- 17:26scavenging and blackmail. I went inside to CALLI Bara. In five minutes of
- 17:30traces, relays and busy signals went by before I finally got through to him
- 17:33with my news about Helen Palmer's killer. What where are you? Marlon?
- 17:37In our house and I've been drive forty three ten North was shared by Helen
- 17:41Palmer my new client, Ronda Langley. Did she kill my suspect marl It
- 17:45could be she left here in a big hurry. Another thing he borrowed.
- 17:48There's more behind this business than robbery, like what like blackmail? Maybe?
- 17:52So we just found a Palmer's girl handbag in a trash can, nothing left
- 17:56but a lipstick and two letters. Incidentally, one is addressed the York Ronda
- 18:00Langley. It figures they shared the hust So Helen happened to pick up the
- 18:03day's mail. What's the other letter? It was one return for insufficient postage.
- 18:07They forgot that air mail is six cents these days. We return.
- 18:11Wait a minute, is that letter addressed to a law firm in San Francisco?
- 18:14I was addressed to Sophie Kilbirdie. Sophie kho kill Birdie? I say
- 18:18New Jersey whyy bora Listen? Helen was blackmailing somebody, and she covered herself
- 18:22by mailing a letter to a lawyers in San Francisco. If that letter was
- 18:26returned for insufficient postage, and the blackmail victim knew it, he'd have no
- 18:29qualms about killing her, right sure, But the letters were in Helen's purse.
- 18:33Do you think she'd have known her protection was gone? Phil, I'm
- 18:37gonna put out a pickup call and your client, you get on down here
- 18:40so we can go over this mess one step at a time. Where's here
- 18:42still at the gas station? And Van I saw of Hollywood Boulevard? Okay,
- 18:45Bora, how long are you going to be there? Just until Thadius
- 18:48Grova shows up to identify the body and give me some answers personally about that
- 18:52scavenger hunty through tonight. What about this curly headed copse I've got here?
- 18:56Have you gone over him? Yeah? Yeah, nothing but a gun?
- 18:57Some small bills on then I'll keep I'll expect you in a few minutes.
- 19:02Okay, so long you Borrow and I put it on the phone. I
- 19:06was convinced that a big switch was you any minute, because finding those letters
- 19:10and Helen Thomas purse made a lot of sense in one direction and not a
- 19:12bit in another. I could have made more heads and tails by flipping a
- 19:15ball bearing than I got out of the fax he Borrow had given me.
- 19:18Just then, the shadow of a man slid up the walk. I heard
- 19:22a pair of feet off the stairs, two at a time. It was
- 19:26the wonder Boy executive I had met at the party. Better hold it right
- 19:33there, sample Marlo, Why the gun so the same thing won't happen to
- 19:38me? That happened to the dead little guy outside another murder? Marl,
- 19:41where's Rnda? Is she all right? She left here as fast as an
- 19:45ate. Some of the motor wide open could move just after it happened,
- 19:47and it was Ronda. I saw on my way over here a speeding car
- 19:51almost crowded me off the road. It looked like Ronda's, but I wasn't
- 19:52sure, and Marlow, she was being chased by another car, a fast
- 19:56one chased to assure. Yes, the first car is by inches when it
- 20:00swung around a curve. I don't know yet how she made it. Then
- 20:03a second car came along and passed the curve, but it stopped, backed
- 20:07up, and then took the same road Randa had taken, and she got
- 20:08away. I don't know. I come on outside, sample, I want
- 20:12to take a look at this. By the way, how long have you
- 20:17known Randa? How about a year? She's a brilliant girl. Marlow came
- 20:21out from the East and I gave her a job as my secretary. He's
- 20:22more than that now, huh. I'm in love with her, that's what
- 20:26you mean? Yeah? Yeah, Oh, here is Marlowa. I know
- 20:33this man. That's Nate Murdoch. He used to be a foreman with off
- 20:37firm. He left and went back to Atlanta right after Clayburn's death. Atlanta,
- 20:41isn't your host? Thaddius Grove from Atlanta? Like, yes, he
- 20:45is, Oh, brother, When did you see Grover last? The police
- 20:48asked him to go and identify Helen's body he left the party while the officer
- 20:52was still questioning the rest of us, and on the way he could have
- 20:53taken time off the drop by here kill Murdock and make a try for Ronda.
- 20:56Two. Come on, let's get to the phone. Why Marlowe good?
- 21:00Heavens, Grover's our friend. He and Helen were engaged to be married.
- 21:02All right, so it doesn't make sense. But it's fiance and his
- 21:04short friends with Atlanta both dead, and Ronda's burning the tires off a car
- 21:08to keep out of reach. Those are the facts. Will make sense later.
- 21:11I call Grover's place in hurry up. That's where she intended to go
- 21:15when she left here to console him. No less scavenger hunt my aunt Minnie?
- 21:21Hello? Hello, is mister Grover there? No? Well, has
- 21:26miss Langley arrived yet? Oh? It's the maid marl rondahead? What's that?
- 21:33She's coming up the walk Now hold the line a minute least she just
- 21:36got there, model. What'll I tell her? Tell her to leave again?
- 21:38Tell her? No, where do you live? Forty four six odd?
- 21:41Only? All right? Tell her I said for her to wait outside
- 21:44in the back of the house until you can get over there to pick her
- 21:45up. Take her to your place, and I'll pin Grover down right.
- 21:48Where are you going? Now? See lieutenanty Bora? And I can get
- 21:51there faster than I can call him on the phone. Good luck. Sample.
- 22:00Sample was repeating my name over the Groves mate on the phone as I
- 22:03left. A few minutes later, at the mobile gas station off Hollywood Boulevard,
- 22:08I found the Bora looking sad danik in the blinking light from a flying
- 22:11red Neon horse above his head as he flipped through a stack of papers on
- 22:17top of an oil drum. It's about time, Martl. Where's that client
- 22:19of you were? Now? Wait a minute, he Barrow, I had
- 22:21a peg doll. Wrong, she's a pigeon. Has Tatius Grove have been
- 22:23here yet? Just left? He's quite a character, that guy. He
- 22:26didn't let him get away alone, he was what do you mean get away?
- 22:29Borrow? There's a there's a big connection between Tatius Grover and Murdoch,
- 22:32the guy who killed Helen. Now Grover might have hired him for the job,
- 22:36and now he's trying to get rounda Now, Marvel, how does that
- 22:37figure? It doesn't, But so help me, Borrow. That's the way
- 22:40it is. Grove was heading for his friend Larry Sample's house, and he
- 22:41left tapping nowhere Sample, he smoked, that's exactly where I told Sample to
- 22:45take the girl. Forty four h six odd more. That's great, mardl.
- 22:48They'll all be together in one place. I'll pick up a whole crew,
- 22:51and right now you're gonna pick up the pieces. You mean you think
- 22:53there'll be a showdown any minute, he barrow. It can't miss. Okay,
- 22:56So we'll take some firepower along and McCall up. Great, let you
- 23:00go, come on, Phil, Look ye Borrow, maybe Sample hasn't gotten
- 23:03home with Ronda yet. I'll go up the grovers and try to head them
- 23:06off. Okay, okay, marlol. But if you get them before I
- 23:08do, bring them in and O alibis, I'll see it. Borrow was
- 23:15grim as he climbed in his car and drove off fast. I headed for
- 23:19my car. Then as I turned my arm swept the scavenger list. See
- 23:22Barrow had left on the oil drum, off onto the ground, and I
- 23:26picked them up. Ronda Langley's name was on top. Her list was as
- 23:30coony as the others, but near the bottom was an item strangely familiar to
- 23:34me which hadn't been checked off. It was a canceled ticket from wood Haven
- 23:38Ballroom. All at once I realized why it was familiar. The sign I'd
- 23:45been half conscious of on top of the big squat building across the street read
- 23:48wood Haven Ballroom closed tonight. And a hunch I dug the Helen Palmer's list
- 23:53Yay borrow was right. Everything but a night watchman's badge and one detective private
- 23:57had been checked off, and that gave me half of the switch. I
- 24:02knew. I had to show up a random my car and headed for that
- 24:07southern mansion in the Hollywood Hills in the end of a very complicated frolic,
- 24:12and with every turn of the road, I gave myself another whack for being
- 24:15such a near sighted sucker. I got there. The big house on Magnolia
- 24:18Terrace was dark, except for a light in the servants' quarters. I stepped
- 24:22down the block, walked back and edged around the patio with the garage,
- 24:26the hothouse, and the king sized barbecue loomed only as shapeless lumps of shadow.
- 24:32I stood still and watched, and I saw him move, walking slowly,
- 24:37gun in hand along the fence toward the hothouse. I started tolling him
- 24:41quietly, just as he found out what he was looking for. Oh you're
- 24:44clever, my dear. But it's all over now. I know you're in
- 24:47there, so come on out with your hands up. Oh no, you're
- 24:48hanging yourself from murder right now, Larry Sample, I've got all the proof
- 24:52I need. I don't know what good it'll do you, Rande, I'll
- 24:55have a pay you are sent for it, your blackmailing tramp. I'll kill
- 24:56you first. And that protection that you wrote to your lawyers was return Dolly.
- 25:02I found it accidentally and Helen's pursed the night of the party, so
- 25:06no one will know. Come on out or I'm going in after you.
- 25:08I wouldn't try that if I were. You sampled Marlows you here any minute
- 25:11now. He called me and told me that was idea you. I used
- 25:15his name when I talked to the maid. Oh. I should have done
- 25:19this myself in the first place, instead of trusting that stupid Murdoch. Are
- 25:22you gonna come out of there? No, And I've got a gun.
- 25:26You can't see me, and I know it. Your white dress makes a
- 25:30perfect target. Your little fool, Robert Temple, Now let's have that gun,
- 25:37replied you got here. No, No, he's not dead and he
- 25:41won't be from bullets. Give me your gun too. Come on, I
- 25:45was too scared to use it anyway. Thanks. I sit down and shut
- 25:49up. We're gonna wait for lieutenanty Bar. Then you're both going to the
- 25:52pokey what listen? You know I don't go for blackmail his male off female,
- 25:57even the cute one's a rugby lady. Very u Phil, Wait,
- 26:00you've got to understand something. Two years ago, Larry Sample killed his partner,
- 26:04Joshua Claiburn. I knew it, but I couldn't prove it, so
- 26:07I pretended I couldn't blackmailed him. Don't you see if he paid offer or
- 26:11tried to kill me, that would be proof of his guilt, and he
- 26:14did. Marlow, why should you pull a stunt like that. I'm a
- 26:18divorce a. Marlow Langley is only my married name. Okay, so what
- 26:22my maiden name was Claiburn Clavern. I'm josh Claiburn's daughter. Oh and I
- 26:29can prove that that reason enough? WHOA why didn't you level with me instead
- 26:33of labeling Helen a blackmailer. Helen was already dead. Now I needed your
- 26:37health desperately. I thought I had to lie to get it. Okay,
- 26:41yeah, okay, baby, anyone care for more coffee? How about you?
- 27:00Lieutenant? Oh oh thanks, mister Grove. All aw, you got
- 27:04it all to come out even anyway. Frankly, that's more than I expected.
- 27:08And I left you with that gas station. Yeah, yeah, we
- 27:11were lucky. Burr. I yes, I owe you an apology, mister
- 27:15Grover. Oh shock, it's all right, sir. There's a shock to
- 27:18me that'd be accused of poor Helen's murder. But well, Choren, now,
- 27:22yeah, you said it was the scavenger list. Set you straight.
- 27:26How'd you figure that? Boy? Well, there was a wood Haven ballroom
- 27:30ticket on Ronda's list, so she had to go there for the ticket,
- 27:33you see. Sample knew that, and he told his killer Murdoch. Coincidentally,
- 27:37he hired the murder Clayburn two years ago that the girl who went to
- 27:41the wood Haven ballroom was his target. But Helen happened to go there after
- 27:45the night watchman's badge, which he could have picked up any place in town.
- 27:48Yeah, a terrible coincidence for Helen. But that was all that saved
- 27:52my life. Really, that's right, honey. Murdoch made the mistaken.
- 27:56When he and Sample discovered it, they made another try at Ronda's house.
- 28:00Yes, but I caught Murdoch there, so Sample shot him before he could
- 28:03talk. When I left, he followed me in his car. I knew
- 28:06they were after me, and I thought for sure they'd killed you, Phil.
- 28:08That's why I ran, yeah, and threw me for a loop,
- 28:12and Sample came back to make sure that Murdoch was dead and sold me a
- 28:15great, big bill of goods at the same time. It's a terrible,
- 28:18terrible thing, asked mister Grover. It is, Lieutenant. I want to
- 28:22thank you personally for your participation. Thank you, thank you very much.
- 28:26Well, I've got everything I need, so I'll say good night. Yeah,
- 28:30me too, I feel shall I Why yes? I think? No?
- 28:37No, no, wait a minute. You know, honey, with
- 28:42with your knowledge of postal rates, so why don't you just deliver it in
- 28:48person? Maybe love to count on its tomorrow. I drove down from the
- 29:10Hollywood Hills with a check warming my wallet and the echo of a soft invitation
- 29:15warming my imagination. You know that was quite a party at Grover's house.
- 29:21Scaveng John. People determined to have a good time even if it killed him.
- 29:26You know what, it didn't. I know another game associations goes like
- 29:33this Grover's party. Randa Langley, Randa m hm, dates hm hmm.
- 29:44I wonder if she likes baseball. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe created by Raymond
- 30:07Chandler, star Gerald Moore and are produced and directed by Norman McDonald. Script
- 30:12is by Meldon la Robert Mitchell, and Gene Levitt. Featured in the cast
- 30:17were Alan Reid, Mary Shipp, Jack Moyles, Richard Benedict and Lorette.
- 30:21Phil Brandt, Lieutenant Detective of bar is played by Jeff Corey. The special
- 30:26music is by Richard o'urant. He assured me with us again next week when
- 30:33Philip Marlowe says, they were born on the same hour and the same day
- 30:38of the same parents, and they were identical in beauty and talent. Only
- 30:44one was deadly and the other was not. And I couldn't tell which was
- 30:48which until I found a green purse, a fresh corpse, and a pair
- 30:52of dancing hens. If you happen to miss Jack Benny's hilarious show last week
- 31:08featuring the Ronald Colemans. You missed the laugh treat of the year. But
- 31:12Jack will be back again tomorrow on these same CBS Network stations with his entire
- 31:18gang, including Mary Livingston, Phil Harris, Rochester, Dennis Day, Don
- 31:22Wilson and the Sportsman's Quartet. Invite some friends over, sit back and enjoy
- 31:26the Jack Benny Show tomorrow. This is Roy Rowan speaking. This is CBS
- 31:38where ninety nine million people gather every week the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome by
- 32:00Well. I like the little bit of lighter moment that was worked into the
- 32:08story with the realization of the scavenger hunt and Marlow, after initially being steamed,
- 32:15willing to be good humor about it. It was nice. And I
- 32:20do like that portrayal, the Gerald Moore portrayal of Philip Marlow, because he
- 32:25can be light and humorous without being flipped or overly sarcastic. Of course,
- 32:31if Pat Novak were in this situation, he would not even probably have accepted
- 32:37the invitation in. But that's the big difference. And I think what makes
- 32:42Marlow over the radio such an interesting character. Well, we turned out to
- 32:49some listener comments and feedback, and we'll start with Joels, who rots in
- 32:54your podcast are regular bedtime feature for me. They are tops on Hit Parade.
- 33:00Thanks well, Thank you, Joel. Then we also have a note
- 33:04here from CoA, who says I've been enjoying your broad cast for quiet some
- 33:10time now. Although I love some shows more than others, I love the
- 33:15entire detective genre. I've even written some short stories myself, although I've only
- 33:21allowed a few friends to suffer through my writing. I very much like the
- 33:24rhythm, the dialogue, and how certain characters seem to represent different arch times.
- 33:30Of course, there are some are more complex. Another one repeating character
- 33:35is Jock Omadigan from Pat Novak. We see a sober version of him on
- 33:39Candy Matson but still not surprising with KGO connection, and of course he's referring
- 33:45to Candy Matson's sidekick who initially in the first episode they portrayed him as a
- 33:51drunk, but they dropped that portrayal, probably just to avoid copying too much
- 33:55from Pat Novak, and he goes on as said. Still, yet that
- 34:01character crops up all over the place, occasionally on Richard Diamond as the drunken
- 34:06former granted, Richard does spoof Pat Novak from time to time, a rival
- 34:10detective named Pat Covan from San Francisco. I can't think of a particular episode,
- 34:15but I feel like I've heard his brother on Philip Marlow. Also the
- 34:20other day I was listening to something completely different. It was a BBC production
- 34:24circa nineteen forty six called The Dark Tower, starring Richard Burden. I was
- 34:30a neo Shakespearean is it was a neo Shakespearean Ibsenish production. The hero of
- 34:36the story meets up with a fella that is almost the exact character of Jocko,
- 34:40right down to the manner of speech. He's berating the protagonists and tell
- 34:44interrupted the whole bit. I almost fell over laughing. I thought you might
- 34:46get a kick out of it if you get the chance to listen. Thanks
- 34:51for the wonderful shows and all the great commentary. I hope this finds you
- 34:54well well. Thanks so much, And received another comment kind of in regard
- 35:00to the Jocko character in the email from Brian who rites in I know you
- 35:07really like the series Pat Novak for Hire, but I'm so glad it has
- 35:12come to an end. I really think there was a whole lot of overacting
- 35:15by Jack Webb and Raymond Burr. I tried to enjoy the writing. It
- 35:19was very good, but I couldn't take the delivery. The one bright shot
- 35:22for every show was Jock Omadigan. Was that character in any other radio show?
- 35:27I could swear I heard it in another series. Thanks for bringing such
- 35:31a wide variety of shows to the public. I've been through all the Sherlock
- 35:36homes and let George do it still listening to the older Johnny Dollars along with
- 35:40the Bob Bailey versions you currently play. I can't tell you how many hours
- 35:45of enjoyment your podcast have brought me. Well. Thanks so much. We
- 35:50actually played a program back in April of two thy twelve. It was an
- 35:57episode of a series called Mystery Ward Theater and it was called The Screwball Division.
- 36:02It was written by Anthony Boucher. It was most famous for his work
- 36:07on the radio version of Sherlock Holmes, but Boucher's character was a drunk who
- 36:15was an ex police officer who ended up getting called in by other officers to
- 36:22solve difficult to fathom cases. And where Boucher said he got the idea was
- 36:30from the idea of the Oracles of Delphi. The Oracle of Delphi would be
- 36:38a woman over a pit of intoxicating glue, to which people they would bring
- 36:47her their problems, and she, under the intoxicating influence, would provide the
- 36:54solution to the problem. And that was the key to Boucher creating his character,
- 37:00and certainly with Boucher's overall influence in the mystery writing community. Now that
- 37:06could have inspired some of these other characters we see in the later part of
- 37:09the nineteen forties, or they may have drawn the same inspiration. I do
- 37:15appreciate both questions. And as to Pat Novak, I guess if you didn't
- 37:19enjoy Pat Novak, the good news is it will probably be quite some time
- 37:23before we go back to him. We still have quite a few series we
- 37:28haven't even done the first time. The reason we came back to Pat Novak
- 37:31the second time was just kind of to recreate an experience for what early listeners
- 37:37to Dragnet experience, where you would actually have Pat Novak and Dragnet on the
- 37:46air simultaneously, both featuring Jack Webb, but with Jack web playing very different
- 37:52parts. I think it will probably be years until we end up revisiting at
- 37:57least on a regular basis in a series like that. Finally, I do
- 38:04have a Facebook mail from Eddie who says, Hi, I've listened for years
- 38:08to your Detective podcast. I wonder why you haven't added just a Philip Marvel
- 38:15podcast. Already have the other shows of yours that you are, including the
- 38:17group podcast with Marlowe, and would like having to avoid the other having the
- 38:22other shows twice. I don't expect you to create just a Marvel podcast for
- 38:25me, but was curious as to why you would be lumping in your prior
- 38:29show with the Marley marlow series Curiosity aside. I love the shows and thank
- 38:34you for your hard work. I'm a private investigator and listen to you all
- 38:38the time during my cases. Well, thanks so much, Eddie, and
- 38:42I will apologize. During the war, I kind of got behind on a
- 38:45lot of the of some of the administrative task with the sign keeping the archives
- 38:52page up to date as well as as well as main at a feeds for
- 39:00each particular show, so I will hopefully have that caught up by the time
- 39:06listeners are listening to this on September the tenth. We'll have it caught up
- 39:12during some pto. Well, that will do it for today. We will
- 39:15be back tomorrow with Nick Carter and next week another episode of the Adventures of
- 39:22Philip Marlowe. I do want to remind you to support our listener support campaign.
