- 0:01We got the Open.
- 0:02We got the Super Bowl.
- 0:04We got the Olympics.
- 0:05So much to talk about next.
- 0:38what's going on everybody welcome to
- 0:41sunday sunday sunday night crossfit talk
- 0:45on a tuesday welcome to our irregularly
- 0:49scheduled show
- 0:50Yeah, we've been all over, all over.
- 0:52This is the last week for that.
- 0:54We're back to Sundays after this.
- 0:56Football's over.
- 0:57We don't have to compete with a Super
- 0:59Bowl or anything like that anymore.
- 1:01We'll get back to our regularly scheduled
- 1:03time moving forward because the season
- 1:05really kicks off in like a week and
- 1:08a half.
- 1:08It's coming up quick, man.
- 1:11And then we'll get into a regular groove
- 1:13of like stuff happening,
- 1:14stuff to talk about,
- 1:16things going on in the space.
- 1:18But until then,
- 1:19make sure you like and subscribe, please.
- 1:22That means so much to the channel.
- 1:24Just hit that like button.
- 1:25It's super easy.
- 1:26It's right there.
- 1:26It's a thumbs up.
- 1:28It's free.
- 1:29Anybody can do it.
- 1:32It's weird because I'm so used to doing
- 1:33a lunch show and tonight we're kind of
- 1:35doing a dinner show.
- 1:38So kind of surrounded around meals, man.
- 1:44Um,
- 1:46you guys do anything over the last
- 1:48weekend?
- 1:48I know the Olympics, the super bowl,
- 1:51anything big in your world.
- 1:54I didn't, I mean,
- 1:54I watched the super bowl,
- 1:55but we didn't do anything crazy for it.
- 1:58Like we just sat at home and watched
- 2:00it.
- 2:00The three of us, uh, Aaron cooked.
- 2:04Um, yeah, not much.
- 2:06I haven't done anything special.
- 2:09Um, I watched the Superbowl,
- 2:11lots of Olympics.
- 2:12And then on Saturday night,
- 2:14I got to play in a hockey game
- 2:17that was like old, older NHL legends and,
- 2:22uh, cops and firefighters.
- 2:25So they put me on the legends team,
- 2:27which was really cool.
- 2:28Um,
- 2:30Yeah, I played.
- 2:30I mean,
- 2:32Doug Gilmore is there from the Leafs.
- 2:35A few like older Leafs players.
- 2:38This one guy that went to the Olympics
- 2:40for Canada in twenty eighteen.
- 2:41Wolski.
- 2:43Rafi Torres,
- 2:44who has one of the most longest
- 2:46suspensions in the NHL.
- 2:48I think one of the times he had
- 2:49like forty two games.
- 2:50So like that's how I remember him just
- 2:52for like this one dirty hit.
- 2:55He would just run over people.
- 2:58So cool to play with some of those
- 2:59players.
- 3:00There was a Canadian Olympian,
- 3:02Laurie Dupree.
- 3:03So it was cool.
- 3:05It was really, really fun.
- 3:08Ken says,
- 3:08can you get my Sunday schedule back on
- 3:10track, please?
- 3:11This is really messing with my feng shui.
- 3:13We just said,
- 3:14we are so sorry for all being all
- 3:16over the place.
- 3:17But going forward, it is back to Sundays.
- 3:19Sunday at eight o'clock,
- 3:21going forward for the foreseeable future.
- 3:24As we'll have the Open to talk about,
- 3:26we'll move right into quarterfinals.
- 3:28And then the semifinal season kicks off
- 3:30pretty quickly after that.
- 3:32So...
- 3:33Um,
- 3:34and then we got water Palooza mixed in
- 3:35there.
- 3:36Uh,
- 3:36so plenty to talk about in the coming
- 3:39weeks and months.
- 3:41Um, uh,
- 3:43Ken is literally standing in front of his
- 3:45Gilmore sign game.
- 3:46You stick.
- 3:47That's a weird coincidence out of the
- 3:49stuff I have.
- 3:52That is weird.
- 3:52So this is, uh,
- 3:52let me find the picture.
- 3:59Just me and him before the game.
- 4:01Nice.
- 4:03Well, yeah.
- 4:06Cause son played too.
- 4:08I think it was a son.
- 4:10Cool.
- 4:11That's two weeks in a row.
- 4:12You've been playing hockey.
- 4:16Is there any itch to like do it
- 4:18more often?
- 4:18Or do you like just,
- 4:19I would love to like,
- 4:21I would love to play like once a
- 4:23week in a league or something.
- 4:25The problem is a lot of the times
- 4:27they're like at.
- 4:28Ten or eleven o'clock at night.
- 4:30Whoa.
- 4:30And I'm not going to do that.
- 4:32Yeah.
- 4:33Not with work next day, not with training.
- 4:35So if I found a league,
- 4:37I'm probably too late now.
- 4:38Like I'm on a couple of call-ups now.
- 4:40I've talked to people in the last couple
- 4:41of weeks just to be like on a
- 4:43call-up.
- 4:46But if there's like times that it isn't
- 4:48too late, like I think at the latest,
- 4:51latest I'll play is eight PM.
- 4:53I don't want the,
- 4:54I don't even want the nine PM game.
- 4:56But if I found something like weekly like
- 4:58that, I would totally do it.
- 5:01When I played flag football after like
- 5:02losing all the weight,
- 5:03I joined a flag football team.
- 5:05I was like forty four, forty five,
- 5:07forty six.
- 5:08And the games were at like nine,
- 5:09ten and eleven o'clock at night.
- 5:12And, like, by, like, forty-six,
- 5:14forty-seven, and they're like, hey,
- 5:16you coming back next year?
- 5:18One, I played offensive line.
- 5:19You're live blocking with no pads at that
- 5:22age.
- 5:23And playing that late,
- 5:24getting up on Tuesday morning got harder.
- 5:27And I was crossfitting, like,
- 5:29five and six times a week.
- 5:31And I was still, like,
- 5:32I was hurting so bad on Tuesday mornings
- 5:35just from, like, the hitting.
- 5:38Yeah.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:39Because these twenty two year old kids
- 5:41don't like they bounce back and so they
- 5:43don't care if they're throwing heads in
- 5:46and like it's crazy.
- 5:50But it was so much fun.
- 5:51It was fun knowing I could still do
- 5:53it like at those ages and keep up
- 5:55with those kids.
- 5:57And my team made the playoffs every single
- 5:58year.
- 6:00And but it did that like the late
- 6:02night and then trying to get up for
- 6:03work on Tuesday morning was just rough.
- 6:06Do you find it hard to fall asleep?
- 6:08Like when you have an activity?
- 6:10Yeah.
- 6:10I get like amped up and it's hard
- 6:12to wind back down.
- 6:14Speaking of flag.
- 6:15Did I,
- 6:16was this like an AI thing that I
- 6:17saw?
- 6:17Is there flag football in the Olympics
- 6:20next in?
- 6:21Yeah.
- 6:24Yeah.
- 6:24And NFL players are going to play in
- 6:26it.
- 6:27Really?
- 6:28Yeah.
- 6:29They just announced it like a week ago
- 6:30that the NFL is allowing their own players
- 6:33to play on the flag teams.
- 6:38Yeah.
- 6:39And the same,
- 6:40same thing as like what you were saying,
- 6:41like no pads.
- 6:43Correct.
- 6:44I would have loved,
- 6:45loved to have had that growing up as
- 6:47like an Olympic sport.
- 6:48I think that's cool.
- 6:50And what,
- 6:50what was cool is if you didn't,
- 6:52if you didn't watch it, cause a lot,
- 6:54not a lot of people did the pro
- 6:55bowl.
- 6:55They really promoted the flag football.
- 6:58The pro bowlers played like an NFC versus
- 7:01AFC flag football game,
- 7:02but they had like the girls championship
- 7:05right before it.
- 7:08like the national flag football
- 7:09championship right before to promote the
- 7:11sport that it's coming to LA.
- 7:13It's doing on.
- 7:14And the NFL is backing it big time.
- 7:17Um, so it is a cool,
- 7:19a cool thing.
- 7:21Um,
- 7:22I did watch the super bowl as well.
- 7:24Um,
- 7:25I didn't have like a horse in the
- 7:26race.
- 7:27So I told you like I do,
- 7:28two dollar bets.
- 7:30I bet on, um,
- 7:31the over on sacks and I,
- 7:33cause I knew it would be a defensive
- 7:34game and it actually made it exciting for
- 7:37me because I was rooting for sacks.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:40um and those i actually won that bet
- 7:43so it was pretty cool i also put
- 7:45a couple on jackson smith and jigba but
- 7:48uh that didn't pan out as he was
- 7:50pretty much shut down and had the possible
- 7:53concussion midway through the game but uh
- 7:56it was fun um yeah i was just
- 8:00rooting for kenneth walker so i i was
- 8:02happy super happy because he's a michigan
- 8:05state kid right yeah yep he was our
- 8:07guy man
- 8:09Yeah, he was great.
- 8:10And to win the MVP, he deserved it.
- 8:13And that holding call on the breakaway
- 8:15touchdown was so chippy.
- 8:17Yeah.
- 8:18So chippy.
- 8:19But yeah, it was a great game.
- 8:22Loved the commercials.
- 8:25Loved everything about it.
- 8:26I just love the Super Bowl.
- 8:29I love the event that it is.
- 8:34Seattle is the best team all year,
- 8:36so there was really no surprise there.
- 8:39It's a lot like the NBA where the
- 8:41Western Conference is better than the
- 8:43Eastern Conference by a lot.
- 8:45And I felt like the NFC was better
- 8:46than the AFC this year by a lot.
- 8:49Whoever came out of that NFC was going
- 8:52to win the Super Bowl.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:53I agree.
- 8:56I agree with Ken.
- 8:57Basically,
- 8:57the kicker could have been the MVP with
- 9:01all those...
- 9:03I wish, I mean,
- 9:04I really think someone from the defense
- 9:06should have won the MVP,
- 9:08but not one person stood out enough.
- 9:10Yeah.
- 9:11The rest of them like to get it
- 9:14because that defense played on real.
- 9:21Also on Sunday,
- 9:22we had the Lindsay Vaughn thing.
- 9:23I know I saw that.
- 9:25That was just,
- 9:27I was afraid that was going to happen,
- 9:29but it was when it did happen.
- 9:31Yep.
- 9:33She said that like her knee technically
- 9:36didn't have anything to do with it in
- 9:38her post that she made and that she
- 9:40caught like, I mean,
- 9:43she did what two or three practice runs
- 9:46before a few days before, you know,
- 9:48doing a practice run and doing the real
- 9:50thing or intensity.
- 9:52Yeah.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:54my thing is she clipped the gate with
- 9:56her shoulder.
- 9:56She had,
- 9:58my guess is just the reaction is you're
- 10:00trying to engage things that you're used
- 10:02to engaging and she can say it didn't
- 10:06affect her.
- 10:07We'll never know.
- 10:08Right.
- 10:08But,
- 10:09but that the stability in that leg
- 10:11probably wasn't what she needed to be in
- 10:13that moment.
- 10:15I just hope that I'm hearing like it's
- 10:18going to take several surgeries.
- 10:19And I just hope she is like she
- 10:23is able to walk and have a normal
- 10:25life after this.
- 10:26Yeah.
- 10:27Because she already has a robotic knee on
- 10:29the other side.
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:34USA trounced Canada right before we got on
- 10:37the air.
- 10:38In what?
- 10:38Five to nothing in hockey.
- 10:39In hockey?
- 10:41Yeah.
- 10:41Our best player is out.
- 10:43I don't even know if she'll be back.
- 10:46the rest of the Olympics.
- 10:47I don't think she will be.
- 10:49Poulay, that is.
- 10:51And they've been getting smoked all year.
- 10:55All season, I guess, by USA.
- 10:58USA seems to be more skilled right now.
- 11:00Younger.
- 11:01We went with experience.
- 11:03Most of the girls on Team Canada are
- 11:04girls in their thirties that I played with
- 11:08and against.
- 11:09Almost the entire team.
- 11:11They have zero university girls that they
- 11:14picked.
- 11:15I'd say that most of their players are
- 11:17probably in their thirties.
- 11:19A lot of experience.
- 11:21They're very talented,
- 11:22but USA just seems to be more skilled
- 11:24right now.
- 11:26The games haven't even been close as of
- 11:29the whole year.
- 11:30They've been getting outshot, outplayed,
- 11:32outscored.
- 11:34That's rough.
- 11:35And then when you lose your top player,
- 11:37that's, it is what it is.
- 11:39But I mean,
- 11:40at the end of the day,
- 11:41we've seen many years where like,
- 11:44there's been many years where USA girls
- 11:46beat Canada at the world championships
- 11:48every single time.
- 11:50And then like the round Robin game at,
- 11:52and then you get to the finals one
- 11:55game.
- 11:56Yep.
- 11:58Anyone can take it.
- 11:58Just have to get there.
- 12:01Just one game.
- 12:02So who knows?
- 12:04I don't know if you had a chance
- 12:05to see this, Carolyn,
- 12:06but Jamie listened to part of it.
- 12:09But Tyler Watkins came out with a state
- 12:16of the open report and put it on
- 12:20the Barbell Spin channel.
- 12:22And what he did is he went through
- 12:24the history of the open and scraped all
- 12:27the data and
- 12:28and then put together trends and things
- 12:31that would help affiliate owners in how
- 12:34they manage the open and move forward.
- 12:38And one,
- 12:39I think he should be commended for doing
- 12:40something like that.
- 12:42And he put it in a really...
- 12:44readable type document that's easy to kind
- 12:48of leaf through and see like trends and
- 12:51things like that.
- 12:52And a couple key points,
- 12:53because they're going to actually go
- 12:54through it tomorrow on the spin.
- 12:57And I want to let them have that
- 12:59to explain it a lot.
- 13:01But a couple key things that came out
- 13:03of the video Tyler put out were that
- 13:07if a person does more than one open,
- 13:14Yeah.
- 13:15That doesn't surprise me.
- 13:18I feel like you should expect that.
- 13:20Now there are, I think he said,
- 13:21forty percent of people only do one open.
- 13:26The other thing was the majority of the
- 13:29people who have a decline from one year
- 13:32to the next do not do the open
- 13:35the year after that.
- 13:36So that's a great trigger point for
- 13:38affiliates to look to if you see that
- 13:42person struggling.
- 13:43that maybe they need more attention or to
- 13:46reach out to them more because they seem
- 13:48to walk away from the open after that.
- 13:51And maybe it's an opportunity to have
- 13:53another touch point with them and keep
- 13:55them in your gym and doing the open.
- 14:00I would venture to guess they're probably
- 14:03checking out of the gym life in general.
- 14:05I mean,
- 14:05I would think the affiliate owner probably
- 14:07already sees the writing on the wall with
- 14:10someone like that who's going to decline.
- 14:11But that's an assumption.
- 14:13This is a fact, right?
- 14:14Right.
- 14:15And I think that's what makes it different
- 14:17now is you can assume that that's
- 14:20happening and now you know because the
- 14:22numbers show it, right?
- 14:25And so I think it gives you way
- 14:29more confidence in addressing the issues
- 14:32that you're seeing.
- 14:34And then the last thing,
- 14:36he made a statement that
- 14:38He doesn't believe that giving gift cards
- 14:41to affiliates is a benefit to the
- 14:45affiliate.
- 14:46Right.
- 14:47we have this pocket of money that we
- 14:49give out gift cards and things of this
- 14:52nature.
- 14:52And he thinks that we should go back
- 14:54to a regionals because regionals gave more
- 14:57back to the affiliates than anything else
- 15:00and use that money to subsidize.
- 15:03And he talked about back when we were
- 15:04doing regionals,
- 15:05it was close to a million dollars a
- 15:07regional to put one on.
- 15:09And now like a good semifinal can be
- 15:11done for three hundred grand or less.
- 15:14And just because of the number of people
- 15:17involved has been reduced.
- 15:20The,
- 15:20the amount of money spent on like
- 15:22streaming can be reduced,
- 15:23all of those things.
- 15:24And so now it's,
- 15:25it can be more cost effective than it
- 15:28was when we stopped doing them back in
- 15:31the late teens.
- 15:32And, and, and,
- 15:35And I've seen that with my own eyes.
- 15:39When I went to a regional in the
- 15:41Central or even earlier at Central East,
- 15:45we packed the house every single time.
- 15:48It was a sellout every single time.
- 15:50And the energy in the building was huge
- 15:54because the affiliates were close enough
- 15:56to drive.
- 15:59Yeah.
- 15:59Yeah.
- 16:00And you could go support your people.
- 16:02And when forty people made it to
- 16:04regionals.
- 16:05Yes,
- 16:05there were lower level athletes than we
- 16:07see today out competing for those game
- 16:09spots.
- 16:10But those people are who brought the big
- 16:13families and the friends and the
- 16:15affiliates to come cheer them on.
- 16:17It's their games.
- 16:19For sure.
- 16:20Right.
- 16:22And so I think it's interesting.
- 16:23Again,
- 16:25Tyler said tomorrow night on the spin,
- 16:26they're going to go through it in more
- 16:27in depth and talk about more of the
- 16:30stuff.
- 16:31And if you go to the barbell spin,
- 16:34the document is available for you to
- 16:35download.
- 16:37I watched it on YouTube.
- 16:40I enjoyed it.
- 16:41He did like a mini eleven,
- 16:42twelve minute video just kind of
- 16:45summarizing it all.
- 16:47But the actual full document is available
- 16:49for download.
- 16:51And again,
- 16:52tomorrow they're going to talk about it a
- 16:53lot more in depth.
- 16:58I liked that he pointed out that the
- 17:00Masters is what,
- 17:03basically it's aged along with the
- 17:04Masters.
- 17:06I think that's pertinent information for
- 17:09HQ to know.
- 17:11The interesting thing about the Masters is
- 17:13the retention is higher in the
- 17:15Masters-aged athletes than it is at the
- 17:17younger level,
- 17:19which actually kind of makes sense, right?
- 17:21Because the older we get,
- 17:22the more we kind of get in our
- 17:23routine, right?
- 17:25Just like Ken wanting us on Sunday nights
- 17:27that messes with his feng shui.
- 17:29Like once you get into the habit of
- 17:31doing the open every year,
- 17:32it's just the thing you do.
- 17:34Yeah.
- 17:34Yeah, I mean...
- 17:38Once you've settled into life, work, kids,
- 17:41like the gym is your habit and you're
- 17:43doing it.
- 17:43I think somebody who starts at twenty six
- 17:45and then goes and gets married or has
- 17:46a kid,
- 17:46that's the that's the times that those
- 17:48fall offs happen.
- 17:49Like they just things, you know,
- 17:51a big life change happens, move,
- 17:53haven't found a gym, get married,
- 17:55have a kid.
- 17:55You got to take a year or two
- 17:57off, start having some home life.
- 17:59So, yeah, it makes sense.
- 18:04I still got to look at the video.
- 18:06I've been watching so much Olympics,
- 18:08way less YouTube things now that like all
- 18:11of the Olympic stuff is on.
- 18:12So I'll, I'll get to it.
- 18:14He, he,
- 18:16he taped it and it's cut really well.
- 18:19So there's like not a lot of waste.
- 18:21It's just like bam, bam, bam,
- 18:23bam facts for like ten minutes.
- 18:25It's a super quick watch.
- 18:27If you haven't seen it,
- 18:28go check it out now.
- 18:29It's,
- 18:30it's really good and really insightful.
- 18:34So while we're talking about the open,
- 18:36just to pull up where we are right
- 18:39now,
- 18:41this was just posted about an hour and
- 18:43twenty minutes ago on the Mike Halpin
- 18:46Instagram page.
- 18:48And we are currently at one hundred
- 18:49thousand six hundred eighty four.
- 18:51So we've broken over the one hundred
- 18:52thousand mark.
- 18:54That is up thirty seven point six percent
- 18:56from last year.
- 18:57Nice.
- 19:00And you can see, like,
- 19:01right about here is where we're at.
- 19:04If you can see my pointer,
- 19:05it's pretty small.
- 19:07But right about here.
- 19:08And the trend in the past has always
- 19:10been that it kind of spikes up from
- 19:12here.
- 19:14Because you're getting closer and closer
- 19:16to the open.
- 19:17The deadline is getting closer and closer.
- 19:20And so...
- 19:23In the past,
- 19:23that trend has kind of taken off.
- 19:26The outlier is last year,
- 19:28which is this blue line.
- 19:30So we're basically a little bit above.
- 19:33Is it the the twenty twenty two season?
- 19:35Is that what we're looking basically?
- 19:37Yeah, right about.
- 19:38I don't know what the exact number is.
- 19:40I think it's on the next thing.
- 19:42No.
- 19:43Here.
- 19:45Oh, twenty twenty two was one.
- 19:47Oh, six.
- 19:50Sorry.
- 19:51Okay.
- 19:51Twenty twenty two is one oh six and
- 19:53we're at one hundred six.
- 19:56So it's pretty close,
- 19:58pretty dead even between those two.
- 20:01But again,
- 20:02like that made a major event happen in
- 20:05twenty twenty four.
- 20:07There was like I said this afternoon,
- 20:09there was a death in the family and
- 20:10there was a grieving process and that
- 20:13affected twenty twenty five.
- 20:15And so it's really important that we focus
- 20:17on the improvement from that as we're
- 20:19coming out of that.
- 20:22Agreed.
- 20:24Like COVID brought it down and then we
- 20:27were starting to come back up.
- 20:28Then obviously the Lazar thing drew way
- 20:32less people to the season last year.
- 20:34And then it'll kind of have that same,
- 20:39I think, trajectory coming back up again.
- 20:41So I think realistically,
- 20:43you just are looking at these two years
- 20:46to see the improvement.
- 20:47And then as we get a little bit
- 20:49further away,
- 20:49then you can compare it back to these
- 20:51numbers coming out of COVID.
- 20:53Because twenty twenty two is two years
- 20:56after COVID.
- 20:58We are now two years after Lazar and
- 21:00it's really similar.
- 21:02Yeah.
- 21:04Right.
- 21:05So next year we should be looking at
- 21:07twenty twenty three.
- 21:08And how do we look there?
- 21:10Like, are we on the same trend?
- 21:15So anyway.
- 21:17I think that, you know,
- 21:18when we were coming into the open,
- 21:19there were a lot of people saying they
- 21:21thought we wouldn't match last year's
- 21:23number.
- 21:24And I think the numbers are showing a
- 21:27nice trend.
- 21:28And I think that CrossFit media doing much
- 21:31more this year has helped tremendously.
- 21:36The word is out there much more than
- 21:38it's been in the last few years.
- 21:46Before I forget,
- 21:47did you know that Thirdsy is running a
- 21:49Self-Care Thursday Valentine's Day
- 21:51special?
- 21:52Ooh, nice.
- 21:52Nice.
- 21:55And it is to focus on you so
- 21:57you can focus on others.
- 22:00If you sleep better,
- 22:02you will be a better partner because you
- 22:04will have more energy.
- 22:06Exactly.
- 22:07Rest and recovery are essential to take
- 22:10care of others.
- 22:11And Thirdsy can help you do that.
- 22:13And you can get thirty percent off any
- 22:16purchase of eighty five dollars or more
- 22:18using the code Jazzy at checkout or going
- 22:20to Thirdsy.com backslash Jazzy.
- 22:24That's a huge deal.
- 22:25That's double the normal savings on the
- 22:29product.
- 22:30And it helps you so much.
- 22:31It has helped me tremendously through my
- 22:34recovery being knowing that I'm going to
- 22:36get a good night's sleep.
- 22:39So, go check that out now.
- 22:46So, WFP.
- 22:49WFP, their male lineup, I thought,
- 22:52was pretty much set.
- 22:53Yep.
- 22:54They just announced the last three
- 22:56signings.
- 22:58Well, I can't say last three.
- 23:00Colton Mertens, Tolomor Akinyo,
- 23:03and Yonikoski were announced as signed.
- 23:07Yep.
- 23:07Yep.
- 23:08There's one spot left and James Sprague
- 23:12has not been announced.
- 23:15Which is weird.
- 23:15He's stated several times he's in.
- 23:20So this came out just before we went
- 23:22live.
- 23:24The barbell spin with today's WFP
- 23:26announcement that Koski, Mertens,
- 23:27and Morakinyo signed their contracts.
- 23:29There's only one spot remaining in the
- 23:32men's field.
- 23:32The last announcement will be Sprague,
- 23:34right?
- 23:35And look,
- 23:36there's James Sprague in the comments.
- 23:38You are influenced by the top five people
- 23:41you hang around.
- 23:42At the boys interrupted.
- 23:45Oh, no.
- 23:46I kind of hate that for him.
- 23:57I thought he had a decent plan going
- 23:59into the season.
- 23:59I did too.
- 24:00Reduce the amount of semifinals you sign
- 24:02up for, do Mexico City,
- 24:06and then everything else is after the
- 24:07season.
- 24:12Mm-hmm.
- 24:12But is James playing with us,
- 24:18or is he serious?
- 24:24I feel like James doesn't normally...
- 24:27lie too much like he's he's over he's
- 24:30an overshare of every information but
- 24:33there's really not an answer here either
- 24:35yeah no but i mean that's that's pretty
- 24:40kind of an answer it kind of is
- 24:42an answer
- 24:47Interesting.
- 24:47I wasn't expecting that.
- 24:49He said he loves competing and he loves
- 24:53the opportunity.
- 24:55He was first.
- 24:56A hundred grand is nothing to sniff at.
- 25:01I mean,
- 25:02if he wants to provide for his family
- 25:04while he can,
- 25:05it's a sure shot right there to just
- 25:08get your money.
- 25:11Yeah,
- 25:12I was really shocked when I saw that.
- 25:13Yeah,
- 25:14because each of the events is how much?
- 25:17Each one of them, if he wins.
- 25:19Let's say he wins all three.
- 25:21How much is that in total?
- 25:23Wasn't it like around one hundred and
- 25:24fifty thousand?
- 25:25I think so.
- 25:26That's more than a second place at the
- 25:29games.
- 25:32And he's guaranteed a hundred.
- 25:33That's more than a second place at the
- 25:35games.
- 25:36Right.
- 25:36I don't know why you wouldn't do that.
- 25:39Like,
- 25:40I get you want to win the games,
- 25:41but like.
- 25:43I still think he can win the games
- 25:45and do that.
- 25:45I know.
- 25:48So I put in the rundown a question
- 25:51for you two.
- 25:52Because you guys,
- 25:53like I don't have this opportunity, right?
- 25:56You guys at your peaks would have this
- 25:58opportunity.
- 26:00If you were presented with the opportunity
- 26:03at WFP and the opportunity to compete for
- 26:07the CrossFit Games,
- 26:09would you do CrossFit Games?
- 26:12Would you do WFP?
- 26:14Or would you do both?
- 26:15I'd do both.
- 26:19I just can't with work.
- 26:20I can't take that much time off to
- 26:21travel to compete.
- 26:22But if I wasn't a teacher and working
- 26:24full time, a hundred percent,
- 26:25I'm doing both.
- 26:28Yeah.
- 26:29I mean, I would do both.
- 26:30I that's really hard to say though.
- 26:31Cause I'm like,
- 26:32just never anywhere near the opportunities
- 26:36of James.
- 26:36Like I suppose if you,
- 26:41if you truly were pretty confident you
- 26:44could win the games, it, it,
- 26:49I don't know.
- 26:50It might be worth buckling down on that.
- 26:55Has he had any overuse injuries?
- 26:58Was anything going on this year?
- 27:00I mean, I never heard any of that.
- 27:01He doesn't seem like the kind of guy
- 27:02who isn't, even with the competing...
- 27:05If anyone, I'd say that'd be Colton.
- 27:07Colton over-competed and did a little too
- 27:09much.
- 27:09James was really smart with...
- 27:13his season, I feel like, and I,
- 27:16he's getting stronger,
- 27:18which is crazy with when you're competing
- 27:20that much.
- 27:21Um, and that's really what he needed.
- 27:24I think these opportunities to learn on
- 27:28the competition floor have only continued
- 27:30to make him better and better.
- 27:32He's just a, he's a good racer.
- 27:36Ken says he's not passing on a hundred
- 27:38K. Chad and new.
- 27:40Well, that's just a different thing.
- 27:41We'll get to that in a second.
- 27:43John George says pencil.
- 27:46I think he's playing games,
- 27:47but would be crazy if he declined.
- 27:50And then I didn't know this,
- 27:51but Chad and Newfie says like how Sprague
- 27:54doesn't have the WFP leather jacket in his
- 27:56background when he goes on boys
- 27:58interrupted pods,
- 27:59but then it's hanging there the next
- 28:00morning on the seven pod.
- 28:03Okay.
- 28:04I swear it was in the last.
- 28:08Terry says,
- 28:09or maybe taxes on the prize were too
- 28:10high in Europe.
- 28:11So,
- 28:12Will Morad said something on Rich Froning
- 28:14yesterday about taxes.
- 28:16And then he did preface it with,
- 28:17I'm not a tax expert.
- 28:20But because the payout in Copenhagen was
- 28:23for the tour and not for the event.
- 28:26Right.
- 28:27It actually,
- 28:28the taxes would not be European.
- 28:30Right.
- 28:31It's based on the company, WFP,
- 28:33which is probably HQ'd here.
- 28:38I laugh at that because we get taxed
- 28:40all the time when we compete in the
- 28:41States.
- 28:41That's just a normal thing.
- 28:45Europeans, Australians, everyone,
- 28:48just you guys never come outside of the
- 28:50States to compete to know that that's a
- 28:52reality for all the athletes that compete
- 28:55in the States,
- 28:55that there's a thirty percent withhold of
- 28:57your earnings every single time.
- 29:02John George says it's clickbait.
- 29:04I just don't.
- 29:05James doesn't seem to be that dude.
- 29:07He doesn't.
- 29:09But who knows?
- 29:12Chattanooga starting a new rumor.
- 29:14Wife is pregnant.
- 29:15Doesn't want to be overcommitted.
- 29:16Now there's rumor mill fodder.
- 29:18Well, they talked about that.
- 29:20He had said he had, like,
- 29:22he took a picture with his wife,
- 29:24and he was holding the blue Jocko fuel
- 29:25can, and she was holding the pink one,
- 29:27and he almost posted it,
- 29:28but he was like,
- 29:30it almost seemed like a gender reveal,
- 29:33and he felt like he shouldn't do that.
- 29:35So, I don't know.
- 29:37Like, or was it real,
- 29:39and he feels like he needs to wait?
- 29:41I don't know.
- 29:45I don't know.
- 29:47If you're confident enough,
- 29:47you can qualify at whichever semifinal you
- 29:49go to.
- 29:50You do both.
- 29:51It's one tour.
- 29:52Right.
- 29:52Yeah.
- 29:53He's got one.
- 29:53He's got the open and quarters,
- 29:55which he can just breeze through.
- 29:56It doesn't even matter.
- 29:57Then he's going to go compete in Mexico
- 30:00early May.
- 30:01And then he's got his semifinals end of
- 30:04May or online semifinals for seven spots
- 30:08like a month later.
- 30:10That's plenty of time.
- 30:12Then you got the games and then the
- 30:13other one isn't until December or when
- 30:16after the games in August.
- 30:17Like I could totally see him being able
- 30:19like it's not that much.
- 30:21Now,
- 30:21if you go and do five semifinals because
- 30:23you're trying to qualify everywhere,
- 30:25like some of the athletes from last year
- 30:26that were just desperate going everywhere,
- 30:28that's different.
- 30:29But in someone like James,
- 30:31who is arguably the fittest right now in
- 30:33the men's field,
- 30:36I feel like he could compete in May
- 30:38at the end of May.
- 30:40He signed up for Del Mar?
- 30:41Is that the one he confirmed?
- 30:43No, he confirmed NorCal.
- 30:45Oh, NorCal.
- 30:45Okay.
- 30:48Which is end of May.
- 30:49Okay.
- 30:52Yeah, I thought he had a great plan.
- 30:54I thought his plan made sense.
- 30:56And I think, like,
- 31:00I get why the others didn't want to
- 31:01do it because they did feel burnout.
- 31:03They didn't like the experience.
- 31:05James won.
- 31:06James won WFP, right?
- 31:09And he did well at everything he went
- 31:10to last year.
- 31:13He's always relevant.
- 31:14His trains seems to be more conducive to
- 31:17a little bit busier schedule.
- 31:18That's what I'm saying.
- 31:21So that's why it's weird because he said
- 31:23one thing and now we're,
- 31:25we're hinting at another direction and
- 31:28that's why it's just odd.
- 31:30I mean,
- 31:31how many of us said that he was
- 31:34the athlete of the year in.
- 31:38And he didn't even,
- 31:39and he didn't even win the games.
- 31:40Like he it's getting,
- 31:43it's getting him more support show,
- 31:46like winning these things and showing that
- 31:48he's just that dominant.
- 31:51I think he's almost separated himself from
- 31:54that top group.
- 31:55Almost.
- 31:56In terms of...
- 31:58I think he's almost a tier above them
- 32:00right now.
- 32:00He's just so consistent anyway,
- 32:02regardless of the programming.
- 32:03I think the only place he doesn't separate
- 32:05himself is Rogue.
- 32:08Rogue is just too heavy.
- 32:09He did excellent this year at Rogue.
- 32:11Right,
- 32:11but he was not in contention to win.
- 32:15True.
- 32:17The only asterisk to all of this is...
- 32:20Jeff Adler's health.
- 32:22Yeah.
- 32:24Yeah.
- 32:24Other than that, like,
- 32:25I feel like James has been so good
- 32:29all year, all year.
- 32:31Really?
- 32:32Because he won Waterpalooza.
- 32:35He won WFP.
- 32:37He took fourth at the games, right?
- 32:40Fourth, third, fourth.
- 32:46Ricky was second.
- 32:47Was James third?
- 32:48James was third, right?
- 32:51Dallin was fourth.
- 32:52Yeah.
- 32:53James was third.
- 32:55Yeah, they were podiumed at the games.
- 32:57And then he took fourth at Rogue.
- 33:00That's a hell of a year.
- 33:07Yeah.
- 33:10So, it's just weird.
- 33:13Then we look at the women's side at
- 33:15WP and nothing has been announced.
- 33:17That doesn't make any sense.
- 33:19Like, no one.
- 33:20Ten finishers last year.
- 33:22We know two answers.
- 33:24We know that Emma Tall is in,
- 33:27and we know that Lucy Campbell is out.
- 33:30And the other eight, we have no idea.
- 33:33Because the only other announcements are
- 33:35from eleven on.
- 33:40And they haven't dipped into the
- 33:42twenty-one past,
- 33:44so we
- 33:47So we just don't know.
- 33:50Why do we know the entire men's field
- 33:53except for one position,
- 33:54and we don't know a single thing about
- 33:56the top ten women?
- 33:58There wasn't a separate signing date for
- 34:00women, right?
- 34:03In the first announcement,
- 34:04they announced a handful of women,
- 34:08like Andrea Selberg and Hannah Black.
- 34:12Hannah Black wasn't announced as a sign.
- 34:14Does it?
- 34:16But Olda was and Emma Tall was.
- 34:21Lydia Fish was.
- 34:25Emily Rolfe was.
- 34:27So like that,
- 34:28eleven through fifteen was pretty much all
- 34:32a yes.
- 34:33And then Olda at nineteen was.
- 34:36we don't know like a smack like danny
- 34:38spiegel didn't it wasn't on the list and
- 34:42then the nine ten up we only know
- 34:45the two emma tall and lucy campbell and
- 34:47we only know lucy because she said it
- 34:49on talking elite fitness it's just bizarro
- 34:58world because it is weird like is laura
- 35:02signed up for the open
- 35:04I have not heard that.
- 35:07I mean,
- 35:07you would think she would stay with WFP.
- 35:11Here's a little sidetrack.
- 35:12But Noah Olsen is.
- 35:14I know.
- 35:15Do you...
- 35:16Do you realize how wild the thirty five
- 35:18to thirty nine year old man could be
- 35:21this year at the games with Noah?
- 35:24Could Pat go there too?
- 35:27Pat Vellner could go there.
- 35:29Because Pat could.
- 35:30Because if Pat doesn't qualify
- 35:32individually, let's say.
- 35:34Con was there last year.
- 35:35Sam Dancer said he's coming.
- 35:37Yep.
- 35:39I mean,
- 35:40that is a crazy field of Masters athletes.
- 35:44Is Marquand in there now, too?
- 35:46He was there last year.
- 35:51Yeah.
- 35:51But, like, Kepner is taking it, like,
- 35:52super seriously.
- 35:53I know.
- 35:53I love it.
- 35:54I love it so much.
- 35:55He's funny.
- 35:58I mean, that...
- 36:02I was debating on whether going out,
- 36:04because I already have a hotel from
- 36:05Wednesday on,
- 36:07and debating getting the hotel from Monday
- 36:10so I could watch the beginning of the
- 36:12Masters.
- 36:13Cause I,
- 36:14I'd want to change the way I'm doing
- 36:15things this year and I don't want to
- 36:17have to be at every single thing.
- 36:19Right.
- 36:20But man,
- 36:20that may be too good to pass up.
- 36:24And I don't even know who's coming into
- 36:25the women's thirty five to thirty nine.
- 36:28Yeah.
- 36:28Like we've got Carolyn there,
- 36:31but I don't know who else is coming.
- 36:34And that has always been a good battle.
- 36:40It's really exciting when you're seeing
- 36:41more and more of the legends now willing
- 36:44to do the Masters.
- 36:46Yeah.
- 36:47For us OGs to go see that,
- 36:50it's kind of worth it if you're making
- 36:52the trip out there.
- 36:53Well,
- 36:53that was the point of adding that thirty
- 36:55five to thirty nine was there.
- 36:57There were so many good games.
- 36:59Athletes that were just just not making it
- 37:02anymore.
- 37:03And then it was an opportunity to have
- 37:04them continue to compete because it was
- 37:05always forty and above before.
- 37:07Right.
- 37:08Forty and above.
- 37:09Yeah.
- 37:10Well,
- 37:11and I don't know how much of the
- 37:12Rich Froning podcast you saw,
- 37:14but Rich said back in the day,
- 37:16they only thought they'd have a four or
- 37:18five year career.
- 37:20And they were beating themselves up for
- 37:23those four to five years.
- 37:25And now Rich's knee won't let them do
- 37:27the things to compete.
- 37:29But the later we get into the
- 37:34the timeline of CrossFit,
- 37:36the better people understood training and
- 37:39the less beat up they are.
- 37:40So you're getting a better quality of
- 37:43thirty five to thirty nine year old.
- 37:49So Vicky and Mark are both confirming that
- 37:52Laura has not signed up for the open
- 37:53yet.
- 37:54So I mean, anything.
- 37:57Yeah, we bring up those comment.
- 37:58The second one.
- 37:59I feel which one will the roster be
- 38:04complete?
- 38:07So Phil says,
- 38:08will the roster be complete before the
- 38:10qualifier starts,
- 38:11which starts in seven days?
- 38:12I think that's incredibly important to
- 38:16have that released.
- 38:18This was kind of like...
- 38:21Here's why it's not.
- 38:25Here's why it's not.
- 38:26Because the rule they made this year is
- 38:30if you went to Copenhagen,
- 38:32you get an automatic bid to Mexico City.
- 38:36So anybody in the top thirty do not
- 38:38have to do the qualifier,
- 38:40whether you're a pro or not.
- 38:44So you should just assume that those
- 38:46thirty are in, maybe a couple left.
- 38:47What if like Mexico City,
- 38:49the top twenty like they're the top
- 38:52athletes that weren't given a pro spot,
- 38:55they get their pro spot there for the
- 38:58season because they're lacking so many
- 38:59females.
- 39:06Well,
- 39:06I think they've announced like eight,
- 39:10eight of the twenty.
- 39:13So let's say they can't fill it.
- 39:16Then you go, okay,
- 39:17Mexico City becomes earn your spot.
- 39:19Yeah.
- 39:20That'd be kind of cool, actually.
- 39:23That would be cool.
- 39:25If that were the case, would Carolyn go?
- 39:28I'd try.
- 39:29Maybe see what the qualified workouts are.
- 39:32I mean,
- 39:33that'll be back-to-back weekends to
- 39:34compete for me because I'm doing Del Mar.
- 39:41But you, as an athlete,
- 39:43to get your season paid for,
- 39:46not only are you getting a check from
- 39:48them,
- 39:49but you're also getting your travel paid
- 39:53for for their tour events.
- 39:55So you get to go to those events
- 39:57without any money coming out of pocket.
- 40:00The difficulty with that is qualifying to
- 40:04each of the events to have enough points.
- 40:07Exactly.
- 40:08Right.
- 40:08To be able to compete and then earn
- 40:11your spot for the following year.
- 40:15And then mixing that in with the game
- 40:16season for me.
- 40:18Yeah.
- 40:19It's just tough because I can only take
- 40:21so many days off and I don't like
- 40:24taking them in chunks because it's just,
- 40:26it's hard on the students.
- 40:27Like you,
- 40:29Del Mar,
- 40:29I'm going to have to miss four days
- 40:31consecutive.
- 40:32And I think like that's,
- 40:33I don't do that very often.
- 40:35At most, normally I do three.
- 40:39So.
- 40:40Phil B, they have also sent,
- 40:42have they sent out the special invites?
- 40:45I don't think they have because they
- 40:46haven't even filled out the pro roster
- 40:48yet.
- 40:48I think they need to scrap that.
- 40:53You know why they did that?
- 40:54So, like,
- 40:55if someone had a change of heart like
- 40:57Jason Hopper or who didn't qualify for a
- 41:00pro card,
- 41:01they could get a top-end athlete to come
- 41:03in and compete without having to do the
- 41:06qualifier.
- 41:08There isn't anyone out there like that.
- 41:09You have no top end athletes who are
- 41:12fighting for that.
- 41:13So you don't just don't do that.
- 41:15You need people who want to be there,
- 41:17who want to hype up your season.
- 41:20Not these, not these guys who.
- 41:23Assuming they're making sense in their
- 41:25head.
- 41:28I think they, they knew that people,
- 41:30that people had withdrawn last year.
- 41:33like Alexis Raptus or Jason Hopper or all
- 41:37these people that didn't show up for the
- 41:39last tour event.
- 41:42It was a way to bring them back
- 41:44in without them having to do the
- 41:46qualifier.
- 41:51That's all it is.
- 41:55It's underestimating
- 41:58who you thought you would have and now
- 42:01trying to have a bandaid in case they
- 42:02want to come back.
- 42:10Ken, in the absence of Fergie, Jamie,
- 42:13would you rather have played a sport for
- 42:14Michigan state or make one CrossFit games
- 42:17as an Indy?
- 42:22That's kind of tough.
- 42:23I mean,
- 42:23are you saying I was like a full
- 42:24ride scholarship to MSU?
- 42:27Full ride and a national championship
- 42:29there.
- 42:30Oh, that's tough.
- 42:34Full ride,
- 42:35national championship versus one CrossFit
- 42:37Games as an individual athlete.
- 42:47I feel like more people would know me
- 42:49from, I mean, I don't know.
- 42:50I mean,
- 42:51your local people of MSU people would know
- 42:53you,
- 42:53but you guys wouldn't know me just from
- 42:56being a MSU athlete.
- 42:59So.
- 43:01Depends on if you were the only woman
- 43:03on the football team or if you were.
- 43:04I mean,
- 43:07it would have been like running or
- 43:08something.
- 43:11That is a really tough question.
- 43:13Ken, good one.
- 43:14I don't know.
- 43:18I, I feel like I, you know,
- 43:21if you could have done well,
- 43:22if you could have made the games and
- 43:24been somewhat relevant and got gotten some
- 43:27type of following that,
- 43:27I feel like that's where you were going
- 43:29to get sponsors and make a name for
- 43:33yourself.
- 43:33Not necessarily the college route.
- 43:34So you think financial, I think glory.
- 43:39Yeah.
- 43:42I mean, money rules the world.
- 43:46Yeah, that would have been really cool.
- 43:50So let me just say,
- 43:52I was a Division I athlete for a
- 43:54few months at Ohio State.
- 43:56The swag you get, it was unreal.
- 43:59Yeah.
- 44:00Walking into like Wendy's with your shit
- 44:03on, like people bow to you.
- 44:07It is unreal in a college town.
- 44:10It is.
- 44:13I ran for central.
- 44:13But like the same thing happens.
- 44:14You make the CrossFit games and you get
- 44:16the kit with all the stuff and you
- 44:18walk into a CrossFit gym and people are
- 44:20like, Oh, right.
- 44:22Exactly.
- 44:25But man, that,
- 44:26that brief stint at Ohio state,
- 44:29when I wore the jacket and stuff like
- 44:32it was real.
- 44:34And I was a swimmer.
- 44:35I was not like out on the football
- 44:37field or the basketball court.
- 44:43Yeah.
- 44:43I just feel like the pool,
- 44:45you say the glory,
- 44:46the difference is the pool of the CrossFit
- 44:49is smaller than...
- 44:53I think it's all in your own mind.
- 44:54Yeah.
- 44:55I think if I was asked that question,
- 44:57I would take the CrossFit Games.
- 44:59One,
- 45:00because I just love that sport so much.
- 45:01Right.
- 45:02And the kit you get and the stuff
- 45:06you could hang on the wall at home,
- 45:08the stories you could tell,
- 45:09like all of that would mean a lot
- 45:11to me.
- 45:14I know my head leans that way a
- 45:16little bit, but that's a great question.
- 45:21I have both.
- 45:21I have both because I have a national
- 45:23championship at Wisco.
- 45:24A couple of them.
- 45:26But it's different because it's a team
- 45:29sport versus individual sport.
- 45:31I'm like proudest of like my CrossFit
- 45:35games, especially like, but like going,
- 45:37like competing in Madison there,
- 45:40like for my first time was like,
- 45:43so cool going to the university there.
- 45:46Um,
- 45:47and like being alone with the spotlight
- 45:50versus being on a team,
- 45:51like that's different, but I don't know.
- 45:55National championship is like,
- 45:56those are the best years, the best years.
- 45:59Do you have a ring?
- 46:01Yeah, I have two rings.
- 46:03They're like this fat.
- 46:05They're in Sarnia, though.
- 46:07And then, yeah, our last year,
- 46:10we lost in the finals to Minnesota.
- 46:13Now,
- 46:13Jamie has all the fantasy rings from
- 46:15our... Yeah,
- 46:17she has the one I wanted this year.
- 46:19Ken, I'm going to say CrossFit,
- 46:21especially if it's podium,
- 46:22like Vicky said.
- 46:23Yeah, if it's podium, then that's easy.
- 46:25CrossFit.
- 46:26If it's not podium and you're just
- 46:27participating at the games as an
- 46:28individual, I don't know.
- 46:30I think...
- 46:32The university stuff is hard to beat.
- 46:36Vicky said, Scott, it's like you said,
- 46:37it was created off the back of tragedy,
- 46:39basically confirmed by Will on Mayhem
- 46:41podcast.
- 46:42Things like that don't sustain.
- 46:44Well, you have to build a foundation,
- 46:46right?
- 46:46And that's when you rush things,
- 46:48sometimes you forget about the bottom of
- 46:51the pyramid, right?
- 46:53And it's like when you're trying to lose
- 46:55weight and you skip the step of nutrition
- 46:58and you just dive into working out without
- 47:01the base of the pyramid, the foundation,
- 47:03you're not going to get anywhere.
- 47:05You have to, you have to take us.
- 47:08And here's where like the next thing was
- 47:10rule book come out, right?
- 47:12When you went into this season,
- 47:14you should have sat down with your team
- 47:15and said, all right,
- 47:16what were the PR nightmares of last year
- 47:18and how do we avoid them?
- 47:20Cause we need to build a foundation.
- 47:23And then they put out the rule book
- 47:24and they leave the drug thing in that
- 47:26was a PR nightmare from the year before.
- 47:30Those are the mistakes and the
- 47:31foundational pieces that WFP needs to work
- 47:35on if they want to succeed.
- 47:41And what's happened to me, in my opinion,
- 47:43is right now WFP is right-sizing.
- 47:48They are becoming that developmental
- 47:50league that
- 47:52where an athlete like Sydney McElishan or
- 47:57Hannah black or Lydia fish can go develop
- 48:01skills,
- 48:02can have good competition to go up against
- 48:05and can have money to support themselves
- 48:07for the year.
- 48:10And that could be very, very successful.
- 48:12And through that and how you treat those
- 48:14athletes could get you brand loyalty
- 48:17moving forward.
- 48:21But the games have been around too long
- 48:23right now for you to jump in and
- 48:24think you can buy that.
- 48:28You have to go back to earning it.
- 48:30By the way you treat the people,
- 48:31by the way you run your events,
- 48:33and you work together with the athletes
- 48:38who need you,
- 48:40and you need them to grow what you
- 48:42have as this awesome developmental league.
- 48:45And when I say developmental,
- 48:47I don't mean minor leagues.
- 48:49The way I compared it and I said
- 48:50it today was it's like the Big Ten
- 48:53and the SEC are the CrossFit Games and
- 48:55the ACC is the WFP.
- 48:58You still have really good athletes who
- 49:00could maybe beat anybody on the upper tier
- 49:02at any given time,
- 49:04but the people on the upper tier are
- 49:05going to be favored.
- 49:10The concept of the league is cool, though.
- 49:15And like having the points continue and
- 49:17like, imagine in a,
- 49:19in a world where like,
- 49:20let's say CrossFit games was part of the
- 49:22WFP season.
- 49:23And it's like, that's like the masters,
- 49:26like the biggest,
- 49:27like you don't have the grand slam,
- 49:29but you have like,
- 49:30that's the biggest payout or whatever.
- 49:33Right.
- 49:33And you have rogue or,
- 49:34and they all are part of the season,
- 49:36rogue games and a WFP final.
- 49:40Right.
- 49:40It's a triple crown.
- 49:42Like that would be cool.
- 49:43And all the points continue.
- 49:45kind of add up, but it just,
- 49:48there's just not enough cohesion between
- 49:49everything.
- 49:51You have to build that foundation for that
- 49:53to happen.
- 49:54Yeah.
- 49:54And they just don't have it yet.
- 49:56They need to take a step back and
- 49:58build a foundation.
- 50:00And like Lydia fish is so young.
- 50:04And if you treat her well,
- 50:06and she has a good season,
- 50:08that brand loyalty of her signed and
- 50:10having a great experience could pay off in
- 50:13a year or two.
- 50:15where she says, you know what?
- 50:16I could go up and put all my
- 50:18eggs in the games basket,
- 50:19but these guys have been too good to
- 50:21me.
- 50:21I'm going to stay on for another year.
- 50:29But they have to look themselves in the
- 50:31mirror and say, hey,
- 50:32we need to build this foundation correctly
- 50:34for that to happen.
- 50:36Like right now,
- 50:38the WFP for a lot of athletes are
- 50:42backup plans.
- 50:43It's
- 50:44to make sure that they have at least
- 50:46some income.
- 50:48It covers our thing.
- 50:49And then they're still trying to qualify
- 50:51individually at the games.
- 50:53But then if they don't,
- 50:54they can fall back.
- 50:55They have the WFP cushion, right?
- 50:58Not many of the athletes are like just
- 51:00going WFP.
- 51:02It's a lot of them.
- 51:04It's their, yeah,
- 51:06it's more of like their fallback option.
- 51:08And it's a great option for a lot
- 51:10of athletes because
- 51:12to have everything paid for and, you know,
- 51:14to have a competition with some solid
- 51:17competitors that are like high semifinals
- 51:20games, athletes together.
- 51:23It's perfect.
- 51:25Just it's another option for people.
- 51:28Cross fat says like staying in college for
- 51:30the NIL money,
- 51:31as opposed to going pro look at the
- 51:33Oregon quarterback.
- 51:34I think his name is Dante Moore.
- 51:36He would have been probably a top five
- 51:38draft pick in the NFL.
- 51:40And he said, you know what?
- 51:41I make enough NIL money and I'm not
- 51:43good enough yet.
- 51:44I'm not good enough to go to the
- 51:46NFL and be successful.
- 51:49So I'm going to stay back a year,
- 51:51take my NIL money at Oregon and,
- 51:54play with a top-end team,
- 51:56and develop my skills so that I'm ready
- 51:59the next year when I go into the
- 52:01draft.
- 52:03It's that same concept for these athletes.
- 52:07Maybe Lydia Fish isn't good enough to go
- 52:09to the games and compete yet.
- 52:13Because she's like a twenty to thirty
- 52:15place finisher, right?
- 52:16And you don't even earn anything.
- 52:17She was higher than that.
- 52:19Was she?
- 52:19Yeah.
- 52:20Okay.
- 52:20Yeah.
- 52:23She did great at the games.
- 52:24Okay.
- 52:27My bad.
- 52:28Let me check.
- 52:37The cracks forming.
- 52:38What's that?
- 52:41She finished thirteenth.
- 52:43That's pretty good.
- 52:45CrossFit says the cracks forming in Liv
- 52:47can't make them feel good at WFP.
- 52:50True.
- 52:50True.
- 52:52Because the big names are leaving live now
- 52:55after they got all those big name golfers.
- 52:57They're going back to the PGA.
- 52:57Yeah, that's not good.
- 53:05So is Carson Beck, Laura Horvath.
- 53:07Yeah,
- 53:07Carson Beck going back for his eighth
- 53:09season of college.
- 53:15No, not that one.
- 53:20The fact that WFP is doing a second
- 53:21season means they're doing something
- 53:23really good.
- 53:25No, it doesn't.
- 53:26I mean,
- 53:26that just means they had enough money in
- 53:28the pot to... I mean,
- 53:32I think they have enough money in the
- 53:32pot to last a few years.
- 53:34We won't know.
- 53:37That's part of a lot of businesses'
- 53:39investment.
- 53:39Normally, you know,
- 53:40they give themselves...
- 53:42couple years to even three years and
- 53:44sometimes they're at a loss and then
- 53:46they're still chipping away to try to
- 53:48break through and I think that that's fine
- 53:51by the WFP I still think that they
- 53:53had a very successful first year and got
- 53:57better throughout like worked on a lot of
- 54:00things and hopefully they can
- 54:03you know,
- 54:04bring something new this year or continue
- 54:06to evolve to eventually hopefully break
- 54:09through.
- 54:12But I think that that's normal for them
- 54:14to have a second season and third and
- 54:16maybe cut some losses at first.
- 54:24Ken said,
- 54:24but you risk injury and there goes that
- 54:26NFL deal.
- 54:27Yeah.
- 54:27That's true for the college.
- 54:29Sure.
- 54:29But in, in CrossFit,
- 54:32WFP is guaranteed money.
- 54:34If you're a pro, like for Lydia fish,
- 54:37the games are not guaranteed money and you
- 54:39could get hurt and then earn nothing in
- 54:41the CrossFit game season.
- 54:44We're not qualified.
- 54:45The minimum of hurt training.
- 54:47Yeah.
- 54:48Yeah.
- 54:52Clooney's money equals doing good.
- 54:53No,
- 54:54I never said that WFP was doing good.
- 54:57I said they need to look in the
- 54:58mirror.
- 55:01I think he's trying to say that they
- 55:04have the money, so they're doing good.
- 55:05But no, they just have a huge bankroll.
- 55:10I am not saying that.
- 55:14And I'm not one that's like wrapped up
- 55:16in where the money's coming from or any
- 55:18of that stuff.
- 55:19If you followed along with this,
- 55:21I could care less.
- 55:22They have the money.
- 55:23They can spend it however they want.
- 55:24Yep.
- 55:26It does not matter to me where that
- 55:27comes from or what.
- 55:29how much they have.
- 55:31They're offering it out to these athletes.
- 55:33If I'm an athlete in those positions,
- 55:35I sign up.
- 55:36Unless I'm Jason Hopper or James Sprague
- 55:39and I want to win the CrossFit Games
- 55:40specifically and I want to put all my
- 55:43eggs in that basket,
- 55:44I'm signing up and getting a free year
- 55:46of getting to play.
- 55:48Because like the bottom end of the WFP
- 55:51contract at what,
- 55:52like ten thousand dollars is like what a
- 55:56top fifteen,
- 55:57almost top ten at the CrossFit Games.
- 55:59And you're guaranteed, let's say,
- 56:00three big competitions paid for
- 56:03opportunities for you to show up for your
- 56:05sponsors, possibly gain sponsorships.
- 56:07So for most athletes that aren't there
- 56:10like those.
- 56:12you know,
- 56:13athletes that are looking to win the games
- 56:15and make, you know,
- 56:15fifty thousand and above one hundred
- 56:17thousand, two hundred, three hundred.
- 56:20The WFP is a great option.
- 56:21Yeah.
- 56:25And it's very much like CrossFit says,
- 56:27the college guys that stay back and make
- 56:29the NIL money,
- 56:30they'll make more money than if they're a
- 56:32fourth round pick in the NFL.
- 56:33Like NIL has gotten so serious in college
- 56:38that you can make more money than going
- 56:40to the league.
- 56:41And if you're smart with your money and
- 56:43invest it properly,
- 56:44you can have it continue to grow and
- 56:49be good for life.
- 56:50You should be good with life with some
- 56:51of those millions.
- 56:56Vicky said,
- 56:56there's a difference between having money
- 56:58and making money.
- 56:58Having doesn't equal doing good to me.
- 57:03Well said.
- 57:05Philby,
- 57:05I can understand guaranteed money for pro
- 57:07cards,
- 57:08but for someone doing a qualifier who then
- 57:10has to pay for travel and accommodation,
- 57:13then there's the opening quarters.
- 57:14It's a lot.
- 57:15I completely agree.
- 57:17I'm talking about the people who got the
- 57:19offer of a pro card because they earned
- 57:21it last year.
- 57:23Right.
- 57:24I've said that.
- 57:24I feel like that's somewhat the downfall
- 57:26of this.
- 57:26When you say you're for the athletes...
- 57:28You need to be there for all the
- 57:30athletes, not your top twenty,
- 57:32not trying to pull in.
- 57:34I would have rather seen smaller contracts
- 57:36and offer out to the top forty or
- 57:38whoever you're inviting to this comp to
- 57:40pay their way to get there.
- 57:43Let's say you have thirty athletes compete
- 57:45now, pro, no challenger division,
- 57:48but all thirty athletes get their way at
- 57:50least covered.
- 57:51Yeah.
- 57:52And then there's money as well guaranteed
- 57:55for placing.
- 57:56Yeah, guaranteed money for placing.
- 57:59I just, I think,
- 58:01I feel like to get,
- 58:02if you want ten people to come in
- 58:03and buy for a spot,
- 58:05you need to entice them there.
- 58:07You need to, it's, you're, you're,
- 58:12you're hinging this bet on whether,
- 58:15whether or not, like,
- 58:16the programming's good enough for you.
- 58:18Because let's be real,
- 58:19most of these athletes are program
- 58:22dependent.
- 58:23So you need to get them there.
- 58:26You need to get them there because, like,
- 58:28you can't just bet on yourself.
- 58:31This isn't a sport where I've trained for
- 58:33high rocks and I know I'm going to
- 58:34do well.
- 58:35It's not that.
- 58:36It is so program dependent.
- 58:37And we saw, like,
- 58:40that you could maybe do that if you
- 58:41did the gymnastics event.
- 58:44Like,
- 58:44you knew that you were the gymnasticist
- 58:46person.
- 58:46That's the one you go to and you
- 58:47pay to go to.
- 58:48But I don't know.
- 58:49This is tough to entice these people to
- 58:52show up.
- 58:55Well,
- 58:55it's going to be tough to get fifty.
- 58:57I was about to say, when it's fifty,
- 58:59it's going to be tough.
- 58:59That is absurd.
- 59:03If you kept it to twenty-five or thirty
- 59:06and then paid the travel of those other
- 59:08five or ten athletes,
- 59:10then it makes sense as a competition for
- 59:12the pro card.
- 59:14But I agree with you.
- 59:16You're put at a disadvantage being a
- 59:18challenger having to do all the qualifiers
- 59:21and then trying to compete for this
- 59:25It's crazy.
- 59:27Cross fat asked,
- 59:28do we know if the withdrawals got their
- 59:29cash?
- 59:30My understanding is it was prorated
- 59:32depending.
- 59:33If you had a guaranteed amount,
- 59:35each appearance was a third.
- 59:38And so if you showed up for two
- 59:39of the three,
- 59:39you got two thirds of the money
- 59:42guaranteed.
- 59:44That's how I took it.
- 59:47Um,
- 59:55Vicky, forgot to ask yesterday,
- 59:56how are you feeling S?
- 59:57And I think that's me.
- 59:59I'm feeling pretty good.
- 1:00:01The recovery is harder than I thought it
- 1:00:03was going to be,
- 1:00:04but the results are worth every bit of
- 1:00:06it.
- 1:00:07If that makes sense.
- 1:00:10I can breathe deeply through my nose for
- 1:00:12like the first time in five years.
- 1:00:14It has been amazing.
- 1:00:17But it's like every couple of days I
- 1:00:18get like this drainage rush.
- 1:00:22And hopefully that stops at some point.
- 1:00:26Was it Thursday you were able to blow
- 1:00:27your nose?
- 1:00:28Or is it?
- 1:00:30It's tomorrow.
- 1:00:31This Thursday.
- 1:00:33Yeah.
- 1:00:34I can lightly blow my nose this week.
- 1:00:36Right.
- 1:00:37But I can't do a hard blow.
- 1:00:38You have an alarm set on your phone.
- 1:00:40Blow your nose.
- 1:00:41Oh, I'm counting down the days.
- 1:00:45So CrossFit says, so Haley got zero money.
- 1:00:47That's correct.
- 1:00:50If, if.
- 1:00:51And I'm a McQuaid as well.
- 1:00:53Correct.
- 1:00:53If they did it like they said and
- 1:00:56prorated the money,
- 1:00:57zero of three would be zero percent and
- 1:01:01you get zero.
- 1:01:04But she got that Red Bull money now,
- 1:01:05so she probably doesn't care.
- 1:01:09Right.
- 1:01:10Talk about like hitting a home run.
- 1:01:12Yeah, that's awesome.
- 1:01:13Good for her.
- 1:01:14If you follow global sports.
- 1:01:17Like Red Bull has,
- 1:01:19I don't give a shit money.
- 1:01:23And they are like their athletes are the
- 1:01:28best in the world in F one in
- 1:01:33bull riding in skiing,
- 1:01:36all the snowboarding sports,
- 1:01:38all like they have the best athletes in
- 1:01:41the world.
- 1:01:43They are crazy.
- 1:01:49No cocaine parties.
- 1:01:50Are you talking about me with my nose?
- 1:01:55No blow, no blow for two weeks.
- 1:02:02Yeah.
- 1:02:02That when I saw that,
- 1:02:03like Red Bull signed a couple other
- 1:02:05CrossFit athletes.
- 1:02:06It made me scratch my head.
- 1:02:08Yeah.
- 1:02:08Like Haley makes sense.
- 1:02:12Yeah.
- 1:02:12And her potential is there.
- 1:02:16Like to see her get back to that
- 1:02:17potential.
- 1:02:21um i think last thing i had is
- 1:02:24if you didn't see it pat velner had
- 1:02:25a heart ablation that hits home close for
- 1:02:29me because that is a piece of what
- 1:02:33could happen uh to me if i go
- 1:02:36back into afib again uh he did not
- 1:02:38have afib he had a atrial flutter
- 1:02:44which is similar but different.
- 1:02:46It's just a different rhythm.
- 1:02:48But they went in and burned off the
- 1:02:50piece of the heart that sends the signal
- 1:02:53so that it sends the right signal.
- 1:02:55And he said two weeks,
- 1:02:57he can go back to full intensity.
- 1:03:00Wow.
- 1:03:01It's pretty wild.
- 1:03:04That is wild.
- 1:03:10Um...
- 1:03:13CrossFit says you mean Luca, don't you?
- 1:03:15I don't mean Luca.
- 1:03:17I actually mean like the other,
- 1:03:20the whole group they signed seem to be
- 1:03:23people.
- 1:03:24One,
- 1:03:24Laura makes a lot of sense to me.
- 1:03:26I don't want to include her in this
- 1:03:27group.
- 1:03:28Laura makes perfect sense to me that she's
- 1:03:29a Red Bull athlete.
- 1:03:31But Noah and Yona and Luka,
- 1:03:34but Luka competes everywhere in Europe.
- 1:03:36So that's a different story too.
- 1:03:38He just competed at,
- 1:03:40what is that competition?
- 1:03:41What was it called?
- 1:03:43The Crucible.
- 1:03:45Yeah, a lot of great athletes there.
- 1:03:46There's so much money there for those
- 1:03:48single modality events.
- 1:03:50Entertaining.
- 1:03:52I watched a little bit of that.
- 1:03:54on the weekend.
- 1:03:56Luka makes sense because he competes so
- 1:03:57much in Europe.
- 1:03:58But Noah and Yona don't make a lot
- 1:04:00of sense to me.
- 1:04:02I think their best days as CrossFitters
- 1:04:04are past them.
- 1:04:06And that doesn't seem to be in the
- 1:04:08same vein as what Red Bull normally backs.
- 1:04:13And it's not that I don't like either
- 1:04:15of them.
- 1:04:15It just doesn't fit
- 1:04:18With like Maxel Staffan and the F one
- 1:04:22team and all of that stuff.
- 1:04:24Like they're about winning.
- 1:04:27He must,
- 1:04:28no one must be banking on coming to
- 1:04:30the masters and winning.
- 1:04:31And if you think about it,
- 1:04:33the people who aren't super familiar,
- 1:04:35they're going to see that this dude won.
- 1:04:39took first place.
- 1:04:40If he, if he comes and wins,
- 1:04:42they might, they'll just see first place.
- 1:04:44They're not going to really narrow that
- 1:04:46down and be like, well,
- 1:04:47he didn't win the individual CrossFit
- 1:04:50games.
- 1:04:50He only won this little bracket.
- 1:04:52Like it could bring enough eyes.
- 1:04:55Like all the games athletes that just put
- 1:04:58four time games athlete five times,
- 1:05:00but don't make it team team master.
- 1:05:05People don't know.
- 1:05:07They know what they're doing when they put
- 1:05:08that.
- 1:05:09Right.
- 1:05:11It helps the sponsorship, stuff like that.
- 1:05:13Exactly right.
- 1:05:14You're not going to write master team or
- 1:05:16master games athlete.
- 1:05:17You're just going to write six-time games
- 1:05:19athletes, seven-time, whatever, two-time.
- 1:05:22And then the sponsor's like, oh,
- 1:05:23games athlete.
- 1:05:24And if they don't follow the sport,
- 1:05:25they don't know.
- 1:05:26No.
- 1:05:27You just see a lot of followers and
- 1:05:29they see games.
- 1:05:30You see, if somebody,
- 1:05:31if say no comes and wins, thirty five,
- 1:05:34thirty nine and highlight reels get put up
- 1:05:36of them,
- 1:05:37you're going to see him working out next
- 1:05:38to the likes of Sam Dancer and Scott
- 1:05:41Pancheck.
- 1:05:41And you may believe that this was like
- 1:05:44those dudes are freaking.
- 1:05:47Top of the sphere,
- 1:05:48like most dudes want to look like them,
- 1:05:50so it wouldn't be a far stretch to
- 1:05:53think, oh, that's yep,
- 1:05:55that guy just won first in the world.
- 1:05:58So we've got to get Carolyn a Red
- 1:06:00Bull sponsorship before she wins the
- 1:06:02thirty five to thirty nine.
- 1:06:03So I'm hearing that would be cool.
- 1:06:10Last thing I want to say,
- 1:06:11this just came across from Adam Adam
- 1:06:13Schefter.
- 1:06:14There's been all this talk about Bad Bunny
- 1:06:16and the halftime show.
- 1:06:19I've said it a million times.
- 1:06:20They're not marketing for me.
- 1:06:22I am not.
- 1:06:22They are not looking for the fifty five
- 1:06:24year old white guy watching the Super Bowl
- 1:06:26for Bad Bunny.
- 1:06:28The ratings for his halftime show,
- 1:06:30a hundred and twenty eight point two
- 1:06:32million viewers.
- 1:06:34I thought it was one hundred thirty five
- 1:06:35million last I had seen.
- 1:06:37This just came across from from NBC
- 1:06:40announced and Adam Schefter,
- 1:06:42the ESPN reporter, is reporting it.
- 1:06:45The official number is one hundred and
- 1:06:46twenty eight point two million viewers.
- 1:06:49That is incorrect.
- 1:06:50That is an insane number.
- 1:06:52That is why he did the halftime show.
- 1:06:55So there are people globally that tuned
- 1:06:58into the Super Bowl.
- 1:06:59One hundred fifty seven countries tune
- 1:07:01into the Super Bowl.
- 1:07:03What what what was the numbers on the
- 1:07:07Super Bowl last year?
- 1:07:10This set a record,
- 1:07:11so I don't know what the number was.
- 1:07:12I don't have a record for halftime
- 1:07:15viewership.
- 1:07:16Yeah.
- 1:07:16Halftime viewership.
- 1:07:20I mean,
- 1:07:20did this Super Bowl set a record for
- 1:07:23viewership?
- 1:07:23The thing is that number means nothing to
- 1:07:25me.
- 1:07:25If one hundred and thirty five million
- 1:07:27people were watching the Super Bowl and it
- 1:07:28stayed on,
- 1:07:29that doesn't that that doesn't mean
- 1:07:32anything to me.
- 1:07:33Now,
- 1:07:34I will tell you that I I will
- 1:07:36I would bet my paycheck that this Super
- 1:07:39Bowl did not outperform last year's Super
- 1:07:41Bowl.
- 1:07:41No,
- 1:07:42especially with the teams that were in.
- 1:07:44Some people tune in just for the halftime
- 1:07:46show.
- 1:07:48The Eagles and Chiefs.
- 1:07:50We're going to outdraw the Seahawks and
- 1:07:52the Patriots.
- 1:07:53So that's what they need to say.
- 1:07:54A hundred and twenty million people were
- 1:07:56tuning in live for the game and it
- 1:07:58jumped to one hundred and twenty eight and
- 1:08:01then dropped back down.
- 1:08:02They need to say that and they need
- 1:08:03to say last year the Super Bowl only
- 1:08:06had one hundred and twenty million people
- 1:08:08watching and their halftime show dropped
- 1:08:10to one hundred.
- 1:08:11Like they need to be very clear about
- 1:08:13those numbers.
- 1:08:15Well, I'm sure they're all out there.
- 1:08:16This is just what was reported on a
- 1:08:18text two line thing.
- 1:08:22Yeah.
- 1:08:23Yeah.
- 1:08:23Most of the time,
- 1:08:24the halftime show gets more viewerships
- 1:08:27because you have people go for the
- 1:08:28artists.
- 1:08:29Like, well,
- 1:08:30like people that don't watch football,
- 1:08:31well,
- 1:08:32like look forward to the halftime show to
- 1:08:34watch their favorite artists perform,
- 1:08:37whether it's Rihanna, who was last year,
- 1:08:40Kendrick, anyone.
- 1:08:45But anyway, I enjoyed it.
- 1:08:49I did too.
- 1:08:49I thought it was like, I, to me,
- 1:08:51I really liked the movie in the Heights
- 1:08:54and it gave me that same vibe.
- 1:08:58I didn't understand anything,
- 1:08:59but that's fine.
- 1:09:00I got a D in high school Spanish
- 1:09:02and it didn't stick.
- 1:09:03So there it is.
- 1:09:08Taylor Swift wasn't there.
- 1:09:09Of course, viewership was down.
- 1:09:13CrossFat, with all the knowledge,
- 1:09:16Kendrick Lamar's performance to one
- 1:09:18hundred thirty three point five million,
- 1:09:20marking the highest in history,
- 1:09:21breaking records by Usher.
- 1:09:23One twenty three.
- 1:09:24Rihanna.
- 1:09:25One twenty one.
- 1:09:27And I had read that this one was
- 1:09:28one thirty five.
- 1:09:31And then broke that Kendrick one.
- 1:09:35Across it's a bunny's halftime numbers
- 1:09:36aren't tallied yet.
- 1:09:39This just came literally as we were
- 1:09:41talking about.
- 1:09:43whatever Pat Vellner came across from
- 1:09:46Schefter that NBC made the announcement.
- 1:09:48So I think it just came out.
- 1:09:53So anyway, there it is with that.
- 1:09:59Hope everybody had a good time tonight.
- 1:10:01We'll be back to our regularly scheduled
- 1:10:02program next week.
- 1:10:04If you entered the drawing for the open
- 1:10:07registration,
- 1:10:08we're going to draw that on Sunday night.
- 1:10:11There haven't been a lot of comments
- 1:10:13saying I'm in on the YouTube channel to
- 1:10:16get into the drawing.
- 1:10:18Everyone's signed up.
- 1:10:19That's why.
- 1:10:22Well,
- 1:10:22we need to get more than a hundred
- 1:10:23thousand.
- 1:10:24Yes.
- 1:10:25We need to get that payday for Carolyn
- 1:10:27at the games up.
- 1:10:28So.
- 1:10:30With that, go to the comments,
- 1:10:34type in I'm in,
- 1:10:35and you'll go in the drawing this Sunday
- 1:10:37night for your open registration to be
- 1:10:40paid for.
- 1:10:42I have a code.
- 1:10:43I'll send it to you.
- 1:10:44You can just enter that code.
- 1:10:45It'll take care of your registration.
- 1:10:47With that, leave that comment,
- 1:10:49not in the chat, in the comments.
- 1:10:53And then...
- 1:10:56Yes, CrossFit.
- 1:10:58Schefter breaking NHL trades was weird.
- 1:11:00It was.
- 1:11:01He was breaking NHL trades and NBA trades
- 1:11:05this week.
- 1:11:06It was bizarre.
- 1:11:08With that,
- 1:11:09hope everybody has a great rest of your
- 1:11:10week.
- 1:11:11We'll see you Sunday night,
- 1:11:12and I'll be back here tomorrow for lunch
- 1:11:14with the Clydesdale.
- 1:11:15Bye, guys.
