- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So today I'm going to ask you a question that I ask myself
- 0:34non-stop all the time and that is, where is my attention going?
- 0:40Probably one of the most difficult questions I ask myself
- 0:43because I am inherently like a squirrel.
- 0:47I have that ability if I was a child.
- 0:50Now I probably would have been diagnosed with ADHD when I was
- 0:54little because I was constantly being told.
- 0:57Hey, get back in your over here. Focus.
- 1:00Where's your head at? Are you staring out the window
- 1:02all of those things? But you know what?
- 1:05That's just me and or what was me, still is me, but I have
- 1:11control over it. Now, where I can put myself,
- 1:14I've learned to bring my attention back by asking myself
- 1:17this question. And also, I think that that it's
- 1:21a very important thing. If you are like this to
- 1:23recognize, you're not like this all the time if you're engrossed
- 1:27in something and it takes over your mind.
- 1:30And and it takes over your just everything, it consumes you
- 1:35like, if you're reading a really good book or you're watching a
- 1:37really good movie or you are completely like listening to
- 1:42someone speak and you're just like, wow this person is so on
- 1:45point. You will be grasped by the
- 1:48there, their whole demeanor and what they're doing and then
- 1:53you're consumed in your present. Well, this is rare though in our
- 1:58world because we have so many things coming.
- 2:01That's we talked about this before but the power and pull
- 2:03yourself back and to constantly recognize where it's going is a
- 2:08big deal. So I will say, how do I do it?
- 2:11How do I teach my clients to do it?
- 2:13How do I have everybody? Kind of be aware of it?
- 2:16The first part is doing an exercise of awareness and the
- 2:19exercise of awareness is to keep track of it.
- 2:21Grab a pen and paper, put it in the notes app of your phone do
- 2:25something. But start to keep really good
- 2:28track of where your attention is going.
- 2:30And I don't just mean a little bit of track.
- 2:32I mean, a lot of track like you are, every time you catch
- 2:35yourself somewhere else, you have to pull yourself back and
- 2:39say, okay, where's my attention going right now?
- 2:42Is this, what I said I was supposed to be doing, I'll give
- 2:45you a good example. So this morning as I was getting
- 2:47ready to come out to record for all of you.
- 2:51I had my notebook, I had all the things that I wanted to talk
- 2:54about kind of jotted down in the notebook because it's kind of
- 2:57how I do it. I give myself big chunks of what
- 3:00I'm going to talk. Out and then I just stick to it.
- 3:03Well I had it all done and then my dog comes up and he's like
- 3:07reminding me that it's time for him to have his medication
- 3:10because he has allergies beyond belief.
- 3:12So we have to give him some stuff that help him not have his
- 3:15skin on fire all the time and it comes wrapped in little pieces
- 3:19of turkey so he obviously loves to remind me that it's time for
- 3:23this. So as soon as he did that I was
- 3:25like all right. Okay well I've got a now mind
- 3:28you two seconds before he did that.
- 3:30That I was focused completely on writing down what I needed to do
- 3:35when I came out here and get the chickens out of the coop for the
- 3:39morning and open everything up. Well soon, as he did that it put
- 3:42me on a path of saying oh well now that the dogs need
- 3:46attention. Oh that's right, Lucy needs a
- 3:47haircut. All right, I got to give her a
- 3:49bath and I can't send her out for stuff like that because my
- 3:52little dog loose, he's a rescue. And she's just so smart too,
- 3:57smart for her own britches sometimes.
- 3:59And she She kind of does not like to go when I've tried it.
- 4:04Where I dropped her off. I've tried it.
- 4:05Where I've had the truck come and have the people cutter.
- 4:08And she's just afraid, I think she's afraid that somebody is
- 4:11not going to come back and get her.
- 4:13She came from a very abusive situation and we got her the
- 4:15day, she was going to be put to sleep.
- 4:17So somebody just brought her brighter brighter and then
- 4:20dropped her off and so she's very nervous about things like
- 4:23that, but the best little girl. So I taught myself how to give
- 4:28her a haircut because that's the thing to do.
- 4:30First it was Marc's idea and then I just said, all right,
- 4:34I'll do it because she's so uncomfortable with the whole
- 4:36thing. So then I started thinking, okay
- 4:38I got to give her a bath and a haircut today.
- 4:42Then I said started, grabbing a piece of paper and writing down
- 4:45all these other things that had to be done because we're
- 4:47cleaning up after the hurricane still.
- 4:49And then I was thinking about okay, I've got to get this and
- 4:52before you know it 15 minutes had gone by and I wasn't paying
- 4:55attention to the fact that I needed to get out here and get
- 4:59you guys a podcast. Get the girls out for the day.
- 5:02So point is what saves me from those moments.
- 5:07Because those moments consume us when we don't pay attention to
- 5:10them. So I have to keep stop.
- 5:12Where am I going? Where's my attention right now?
- 5:15Where did I intend to be right now?
- 5:17Oh, that's such a good question. Because if you could pull
- 5:21yourself back and you can get to the place where you intended to
- 5:24go and just keep reminding yourself.
- 5:26I can finish this. Go to the next task.
- 5:31All is good but when I don't finish what I said, I was going
- 5:33to finish before I start something else, that's a problem
- 5:37and having an order helps. So I sat there for another two
- 5:41minutes and I created an order for what has happening today
- 5:44this morning and what not, I put it in order and then I came
- 5:47right out here and I started this for you and I wasn't going
- 5:50to shoot this one today which was very funny but I thought,
- 5:52okay, life lessons, here we go. I'm going to talk to them about
- 5:55this because people often ask me.
- 5:57How do you get so much done? Well this is it.
- 6:00I caught. Stanley asked myself, these
- 6:02questions, I constantly ask myself, where is my attention
- 6:06going? What am I giving it to you right
- 6:08now? Where am I supposed to be going?
- 6:10Where was I intending to go those group of questions, help
- 6:13immensely. So try that work on it and a
- 6:17cultivated as a skill because I promise if you work on it you
- 6:20will be able to have it as a skill and most of my family, my
- 6:25clients, my friends never know the chaos that I used to live in
- 6:29in my own head and And they all know I'm creative but they're
- 6:32like, wow! I don't know how you can manage
- 6:34that Dada. Well, it's because I learned to
- 6:37manage the questions. It's not that I really changed
- 6:40my patterns as much as I learned to manage myself and I direct
- 6:44the energy because I don't want to kill that energy because I
- 6:46think it's really creative and I like that.
- 6:48It takes and random things sometimes, but I also have to
- 6:51control it. So I hope you guys have an
- 6:54amazing day and I will see you all tomorrow.
