- 0:00Welcome back to the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. We're live at bear Smoke House
- 0:03Barbecue. We gave CAV a few segment off segments off because taler Helton,
- 0:07the associate coach, has joined us actually in person. Dan Connelly's here.
- 0:11Nice to see Dan from the Yukon blog and love it. Tyler's here here.
- 0:14Let me just move that there off your microphone. There are you go?
- 0:16First time? Or first of all, thanks for coming in. How
- 0:19you doing good? How are you? I'm doing great things? So tell
- 0:22us what your your roles are as the associate coach? What are some of
- 0:25your responsibilities? So I work mostly with our d and then both special teams
- 0:30right now and then obviously recruiting a lot now like I'll go to Iowa next
- 0:34week. So for the US watching the USHL stuff, yeah, just go
- 0:37checking out a couple of our guys. How is that league? I mean,
- 0:40you see a lot of kids recruited from the USA HO But what about
- 0:42the style of Hockey's brand of hockey there? Yeah, it's a unique brand.
- 0:45It's heavy, it's fast, it's hard to score. It's a very
- 0:49defensive league. So if you're able to put up points, in that league,
- 0:51you're going to be a good college hockey player for us with the USHL
- 0:55versus, say, you know, the BCHL one of the other big ones
- 0:58that I think we see. Do those leagues bring in kids kind of knowing
- 1:03the style that the league itself is, or can guys kind of end up
- 1:07in either league? Doesn't really matter? Yeah, I think guys end up
- 1:11in either league. Yeah. I think especially in the USHL you get drafted,
- 1:15so you don't really have a choice of the team you go to,
- 1:18and the BC League you can kind of go wherever you want, so it
- 1:21gives you a little more freedom to do what you want. Both leagues are
- 1:23really good. Obviously, we got good players from both leagues. So are
- 1:26there anyone you could talk about that's coming in next year? Yeah, we
- 1:32have I think all of them are signed. So we have Katan Shahan,
- 1:34who's leading the USHL and goals right now, okay, and then Ethan Wickcomb
- 1:40he's top ten in scoring in the USHL. And then Ethan Garduola is from
- 1:44mass he's about a pointing game in the USHL. So we're gonna have some
- 1:47Ethans and Jakes next year. Yeah, we're gonna have a lot of Ethans
- 1:49and Jakes, and then Mike Murtaz up and the BHL. He second in
- 1:53scoring for upfront. So I think we're bringing us pretty good forwards and we
- 1:57feel good about the d we're bringing in. All three of the d that
- 2:00we have right now are playing in the USHL. Wow. Yeah, now,
- 2:04okay, go ahead, And I don't want to put you under the
- 2:07gun here, but the you know, are any of those guys drafted already
- 2:09property of or are they still potentially Oh, there's still potential. Yeah.
- 2:15I think probably three of them have a chance to go, and if they
- 2:19don't, I think they all have opportunities to play pro after right, right
- 2:22point and sign Tyler. What's your most fun spot to go recruiting? The
- 2:25Northwest? The Pacific Northwest? I mean you can't. Yeah, I start
- 2:29at the top. I like going to the Pacific Northwest. I don't mind
- 2:31the Midwest. I grew up in Colorado, so I don't mind going out
- 2:34to a little while on Lincoln and stuff like that, so feel a little
- 2:38more home. We're gonna have Oliver Flynn on and then a couple of segments
- 2:40here, and he mentioned he was he committed early you always wanted to play
- 2:45here, lived in North Carolina for a few years after he was born.
- 2:47Was a big Eric Stall fan. But tell me about your recruitment process of
- 2:52a young mister Flynn, mister four point oh as I like to call him
- 2:54now. Yeah, it was kind of interesting because I knew him for a
- 2:58while. I've known him since he's like fifteen years old. And then there
- 3:01was a rule change of he couldn't offer kids till August first, and he
- 3:06was repeating his year at Loomis and he drove up and before he enrolled to
- 3:10be a sophomore Agan and said, I really want to come to Yukon and
- 3:13that's where I want to be. And I guess the rest is history.
- 3:15But so I've seen him since he was basically fifteen years old now, so
- 3:20it's been pretty cool to see him grow up. There you go, and
- 3:22he's six to one, like two o five. Yeah, he's a big
- 3:23kid. He's put in a lot of work, came in early in the
- 3:27summer and put it on in a lot of work, and he works on
- 3:29his game quite a bit and I think his best hockey's ahead of him.
- 3:32So for you know, you talk about the recruiting and all of that as
- 3:38you take over as the associate head coach. Mike Pereira left to go to
- 3:42Boston University, Joe Pereira, Sorry, thank you, Joe Perera left to
- 3:45go to Boston University. How much did you pick up from where he left
- 3:51off and just that whole transition of making sure guys were staying in the loop.
- 3:54Yeah, I think it was. I think Joe was great for us.
- 3:58I learned a lot from Joe. I was fortunate to be around him
- 4:00for a long time, so I learned a lot about recruiting. I think
- 4:02he's one of the best recruiters in the country, and I think he does
- 4:06a really good job. And I learned a lot from him, and I
- 4:09try to use a lot of that stuff now. And I think, so
- 4:12you see this class come in, I think is a really good class coming
- 4:15in. And a lot of that has to do with a lot of things
- 4:16I learned from Joe Tyler. What things you pick up when you're watching a
- 4:20recruit or somebody that you're thinking thinking of recruiting to come here. I think
- 4:25the big thing is like do they play with pace? How hard do they
- 4:29play, what type of teammate, they are like body language stuff for us.
- 4:32I think that's really important. Yeah, I think when we're going to
- 4:36watch players, it's just the way we want to play is we want to
- 4:40be fast and heavy. So when we go watch kids, we make sure
- 4:43that and they're fun to be around at the rink. I think all the
- 4:46guys that we recruit are they always have a smile on their face. They
- 4:47want to be a pro hockey player at the end of the day, and
- 4:49they come to work every day. So whether you want to lose a hockey
- 4:53game, it's they've always got a smile on their face, which is good.
- 4:56How do you how do you gauge that necessarily? So you go out
- 4:59on a recruiting trip, right, You're going to go to Iowa and say,
- 5:01it's the first time you've seen somebody not checking in on a guy who's
- 5:04already committed. How do you balance saying, Okay, we're talking to a
- 5:11kid after a game. He might just be exhausted, he might just be
- 5:15you know, and try to figure out if he's your type of player.
- 5:17Yeah, that's a hard thing. I think it's a lot of phone calls
- 5:20and relationships with other people and talking to their coaches because they get to be
- 5:25around him every day, similar to our players, like we get the opportunity
- 5:28to be with them every day of the week. And then a lot of
- 5:30people get to see him on game day and sometimes kids have bad games.
- 5:32That's going to happen, and sometimes there are our games will go to and
- 5:35the kids just okay. But then you've got to trust go back again and
- 5:39see how he looks the next time, and trust the people that you have
- 5:43relationships with. All right, take quick break, We'll have one more segment
- 5:46with Tyler, then you'll hear the Oliver Flynn interview. We're doing the Yukon
- 5:48Hockey Coaches Show for the final time this season live at Bear Smoke House Barbecue
- 5:53and you hearing it on Learfield. Stay with us.
