SPEAKER_01: I've been getting a lot of requests to introduce my guest.
0:04
SPEAKER_01: And here I am introducing my guest.
0:07
SPEAKER_01: Um listening to you guys.
0:09
SPEAKER_01: Scott Dool, who just got the job at Madonna University, coaching on the women's side.
0:16
SPEAKER_01: Uh he uh was previously at Schoolcraft Schoolcraft College on the women's side, and this is his first head coaching experience, and we were going to deep dive into the difference or or the importance of NAIA and everything that you might need to know about NAIA because it's an unknown league, to be honest with you.
0:43
SPEAKER_01: He's been coaching at Michigan Wolves for almost almost 20 years.
0:51
SPEAKER_01: And if you know anything about you know high-level youth always soccer in the country, you know the Michigan Wolves.
1:00
SPEAKER_01: So it's a it's a great interview.
1:04
SPEAKER_01: We deep dive into his a license process that he's in the middle of, and uh I've I've learned a ton.
1:11
SPEAKER_01: So enjoy this episode.
1:13
SPEAKER_01: Please like, subscribe, follow, and share this episode with anybody who you might think will get something out of it.
1:26
SPEAKER_01: I hate soccer.
1:28
SPEAKER_01: This is another reason why I came home.
1:33
SPEAKER_01: Because you guys are NAIA and you have this.
1:37
SPEAKER_01: We don't have I mean in Buffalo, we have red, red, we're a rolling.
1:43
SPEAKER_01: In Buffalo, we have Kineshaus on the boy side, we have we have let's see, we have Kenetius on the boy side, we have Damon, we have De Uville, and then we have Niagara.
2:02
SPEAKER_01: And I'm pretty sure that's it for schools.
2:05
SPEAKER_01: Okay, and just this area is just so much richer in youth soccer and college soccer.
2:11
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
2:12
SPEAKER_01: And I mean, I I still want to talk a little bit about the Wolves, but in terms of you're brand new to NAIA or brand new to Madonna, yeah, but you were at Schoolcraft before?
2:25
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
2:26
SPEAKER_01: And so can you talk about how well the jump and why you wanted to make that move and a little bit about your history too?
2:37
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
2:38
SPEAKER_00: Um the the stuff at Schoolcraft was easy because my like one of my very best friends is the head coach there, Ken Shingledecker.
2:46
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
2:47
SPEAKER_00: Um and like if you would have asked me 20 years ago, like I've always wanted to get into like the college game, and for me I thought the ship had sailed kind of deal because uh like I had made progress with the Michigan Wolves and I had more responsibility, and now my wife and I have a couple of kids, and so at some point you just run out of time, right?
3:08
SPEAKER_00: Right.
3:08
SPEAKER_00: Um, but with my friend taking over like the school craft women's job and kind of giving me a nudge, uh, and then we like we had an awesome time like hanging out with your friend, coaching the kids that are great, like young women are coachable, they try really hard, uh good personalities.
3:27
SPEAKER_00: The department at school craft was excellent.
3:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and to be honest, I never envisioned like being at Madonna.
3:34
SPEAKER_00: I didn't really have a drive to to find like a head coaching position, um unless it unless it was perfect.
3:43
SPEAKER_01: And it's so it's so nice that okay, wolves are right there, or right there, wherever.
3:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you're able to coach college just so local because you know the college lifestyle of up up and move, up and move every like two years, three years.
4:00
SPEAKER_01: Right.
4:01
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I uh I think longevity here is is really common too.
4:08
SPEAKER_00: I mean, look at Zathy, yeah, you know, been here forever, forever.
4:12
SPEAKER_00: And uh our athletic director here has been here a long time too.
4:15
SPEAKER_00: Coaches uh the men's basketball team recently the athletic director, but I think he started back in 2007, 2008.
4:23
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
4:23
SPEAKER_00: But I think that's where we get our most um support is right from him.
4:28
SPEAKER_00: Like he's been here, he lives it, he loves it.
4:31
SPEAKER_00: He's actually in the hall of fame here at Madonna.
4:33
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
4:34
SPEAKER_00: Uh basketball.
4:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Noel, he's he's great.
4:36
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
4:37
SPEAKER_00: Uh great uh great person, treats people great, uh, wants to push all the sports programs forward.
4:43
SPEAKER_00: Uh and there's a bunch of programs doing really well.
4:46
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, for me, interviewing and getting to know him, it just it's made this transformation all the all the best.
4:54
SPEAKER_00: And then like you were saying, longevity, like somebody was asking me, one of the recruits, how long do you think you're gonna be there?
5:01
SPEAKER_00: And I go, I I mean, I don't 30 years if I can.
5:05
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, hopefully I got at least 30 years more.
5:09
SPEAKER_00: Uh but um yeah, my wife and I are super excited about like this opportunity and being in the community and and just being having it all right here.
5:19
SPEAKER_03: Right.
5:19
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then like I said, like a great support staff, and my club is not far from here.
5:24
SPEAKER_00: We actually uh we jumped into some of their training spaces for nominal cost just because like there's some space open in March.
5:32
SPEAKER_00: Uh like today it's 30 degrees, so we might jump in in a little training space later, but it just allows the girls a better environment instead of freezing their butts off.
5:41
SPEAKER_01: What are the training rules in the spring for NAIA?
5:46
SPEAKER_00: So uh both in the fall and in the uh spring, you get 12 weeks of training.
5:55
SPEAKER_00: So you kind of do the math and then you start like your preseason starts based on that.
6:00
SPEAKER_00: So we'll start like the first week of uh August.
6:04
SPEAKER_00: Okay, and then that'll carry all the way through the regular season and then into tournament play, and then anything in postseason doesn't count towards your 12 weeks because you've earned it and um however NAI looks at it, right?
6:15
SPEAKER_00: Right.
6:16
SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh and then in the the winter slash spring, same deal, you get 12 weeks.
6:22
SPEAKER_00: So if you wanted to start right out of the gate, like they come back and they came back a little bit later this year, yeah.
6:28
SPEAKER_00: Um, in order for us to get 12 weeks, uh both there's two weeks where it's like optional captain's practice, yeah.
6:36
SPEAKER_00: Where I don't lead anything, I don't run anything.
6:38
SPEAKER_00: Um the girls pretty much have equipment.
6:40
SPEAKER_00: We might show up just uh kind of peek at what's going on, and there's a little conversation of what sometimes the girls need help with the activities and things, right?
6:50
SPEAKER_00: Ideas and whatnot for sure.
6:51
SPEAKER_00: Um, but then it's 12 weeks, and we were able to extend some of the training by making like two weeks optional.
6:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
6:59
SPEAKER_00: And then our last week will be um I think April 28th.
7:04
SPEAKER_00: We're looking at a couple of games against Liverpool, both for our reserve team and our first team.
7:09
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
7:09
SPEAKER_00: Um that kind of makes us unique too.
7:11
SPEAKER_00: We have two teams.
7:12
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
7:12
SPEAKER_01: Um how many girls total right now?
7:15
SPEAKER_00: Right now it's 34.
7:16
SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
7:18
SPEAKER_00: And then um we're we currently have nine commits for next year, so that number will you know jump to 43.
7:26
SPEAKER_00: And we're in talks with you know a few more kids, you know, all the kids we think can come in and help the program in a positive way.
7:32
SPEAKER_00: And again, they're all awesome people.
7:34
SPEAKER_01: So who are you playing against uh Liverpool?
7:38
SPEAKER_00: Demir teams or Jim?
7:40
SPEAKER_00: No, so they have um two different groups.
7:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh Javi has one of them, okay, and Elliot, who's an assistant at uh Detroit on the women's side.
7:50
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
7:50
SPEAKER_00: Uh and I've just met Elliot.
7:52
SPEAKER_00: I only kind of know Javi, I don't know him great.
7:55
SPEAKER_00: Um, but they had reached out and I said, Hey, like if we could figure out a day to do both games, right?
8:01
SPEAKER_00: Because uh I think for us we get three matches in the spring.
8:06
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
8:06
SPEAKER_00: So you have to utilize those.
8:08
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then the girls that play in one match can't play in the other match, kind of thing.
8:12
SPEAKER_01: Right.
8:13
SPEAKER_01: So, like, okay, if you have two teams, is it three games total?
8:18
SPEAKER_01: Because are they considered one team or do they each get three opportunities?
8:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
8:23
SPEAKER_00: So I should know the exact ruling on that.
8:27
SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna tell you.
8:30
SPEAKER_00: I've just aligned it, so they're all on the same days.
8:33
SPEAKER_00: So I'm not perfect, yeah.
8:34
SPEAKER_00: I'm not trying to jump through any loopholes and things like that.
8:37
SPEAKER_00: We just set it up.
8:38
SPEAKER_00: Like last night we played uh Rochester Skip Mokhtar.
8:41
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um he's talking, he's still.
8:44
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Skip's around, he's great, man.
8:46
SPEAKER_00: I love it.
8:47
SPEAKER_00: He uh he's super funny.
8:49
SPEAKER_00: Um but it was great.
8:51
SPEAKER_01: What's coaching with in Rochester?
8:53
SPEAKER_00: Uh Rochester Christian.
8:55
SPEAKER_00: Oh Women's Dean.
8:56
SPEAKER_01: That's where I went to that's where I went.
8:57
SPEAKER_00: Oh, it was Rochester College.
8:59
SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, and that's where Doug Steinard went to.
9:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's right.
9:03
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
9:04
SPEAKER_00: Well, I saw a little bit of the show with him, and he was talking about that in comparison to Wayne State and stuff.
9:08
SPEAKER_00: It was funny.
9:09
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
9:10
SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
9:12
SPEAKER_00: Yep, but uh, and that that was great, other than it was 35 degrees, 40 degrees, and rainy.
9:17
SPEAKER_00: At the end of it, I like I ran in my car.
9:20
SPEAKER_00: But um a great experience.
9:22
SPEAKER_00: Uh, we we had a couple of own goals.
9:24
SPEAKER_00: That's right.
9:25
SPEAKER_00: I said a couple, so tough start, but I thought the style and ideas were all right, and a lot of kids I think showcase themselves pretty well.
9:34
SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna start meeting with girls pretty soon to give them an idea like where they're at in terms of first team, second team.
9:41
SPEAKER_00: Already.
9:41
SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I mean I'm so then they have an idea going into the game.
9:44
SPEAKER_00: I think so.
9:45
SPEAKER_00: I think so.
9:45
SPEAKER_00: And there were a couple of girls that we had to have hard conversations with last night because they've missed training, they've been sick, so a couple girls I told weren't gonna get in.
9:55
SPEAKER_00: We were able to extend the game a little bit, so we gave everybody at least 10 minutes.
9:59
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
9:59
SPEAKER_00: Um, but like first team kids got 45 plus, of course.
10:05
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then the people on the cusp were around 30, and then some people got 15 to 20, and again, some of it is based on um class schedule and things.
10:14
SPEAKER_00: And I came in in December, so their classes were already set, so I just kind of looked at the schedule and tried to come up with a plan that made sense.
10:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and for a couple of the kids, in fairness, the schedule just didn't really work for them.
10:26
SPEAKER_01: Right.
10:27
SPEAKER_00: Um, so I have one of the girls comes and trains with my 2012 boys uh on Thursdays, and that's been great with great for her.
10:36
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, at first, you know, they always go like, wait, how old?
10:39
SPEAKER_00: I go, I promise you, they're gonna be able to do that.
10:41
SPEAKER_00: They're legit.
10:42
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're they're proper players and they try super hard.
10:45
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's it's been good, and you can offer that with with some of the other kids if if they're stuck with yeah, with class and stuff.
10:54
SPEAKER_00: In the future, I I do believe it'll get better.
10:56
SPEAKER_01: I mean, you could do that more in the future too, and just have the boys uh always train with them.
11:02
SPEAKER_01: I don't know about the rules or anything like that, but yeah, it makes sense.
11:06
SPEAKER_01: I mean, the US women's national team refuses to play a boys' team that's over the age of 17 because just the physical competitive and when I was at the Flash, we would train against the like we would never go above U 16 of like local uh Empire boys that are now the Buffalo Stallions, and we tied them.
11:30
SPEAKER_01: It was like zero zero and uh we had like Sidney LaRue and and and like score.
11:37
SPEAKER_01: Was she good?
11:38
SPEAKER_01: She was all right, she was okay, you know.
11:40
SPEAKER_01: And then we we had some of the younger players like Lynn Williams was just a rookie, and now she's you know on the national team all the time, and then Sam Mewis, who's already retired, and then heavy doll camper.
11:50
SPEAKER_01: We had a really young roster, but it was loaded, yeah.
11:53
SPEAKER_01: It was a really good put-together roster at the time.
11:56
SPEAKER_01: We were just young compared to everybody else, and we didn't really compete.
12:00
SPEAKER_01: But man, so school craft is do you consider that a JUCO?
12:06
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or yeah, yeah, it's a junior college.
12:09
SPEAKER_01: So what was uh so the the juke the new JUCO rule that's already in effect where it doesn't affect NCAA LGBT is that or did I've been looking for clarification on it because Ken and I used to talk about it all the time.
12:27
SPEAKER_00: And you just don't know.
12:28
SPEAKER_00: Well, and initially we were telling recruits, well, if you come here, you still have four years.
12:32
SPEAKER_02: Right.
12:33
SPEAKER_00: And then it got a little bit dicey, and then we heard that wasn't the case, so I I'm not sure exactly what the ruling is.
12:40
SPEAKER_00: Here's an example that I can give you.
12:42
SPEAKER_00: Uh you might know the name Rick Larson's been at school craft on the Mets team for a while.
12:47
SPEAKER_00: Well, his son, Kellen, I just found out, signed with uh uh four Indiana Fort Wayne.
12:53
SPEAKER_00: Oh, good for him.
12:54
SPEAKER_00: And supposedly he has three years eligibility, and he actually redshirted a year at school craft, so played it, played a season, redshirted, played a season, now transferring to Fort Wayne.
13:07
SPEAKER_00: And they're giving him three years.
13:09
SPEAKER_00: That's that's what moments are.
13:11
SPEAKER_01: So that's uh sounds like it's just normal, right?
13:15
SPEAKER_00: Well, he's got an extra year in there, yeah.
13:18
SPEAKER_00: But I've heard even heard rumors of talk NCAA going to five years and stuff, right?
13:23
SPEAKER_01: So you have four or five years of eligibility and you have six years to get it in.
13:28
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
13:29
SPEAKER_01: Which kind of makes sense.
13:30
SPEAKER_01: It would help on the men's side.
13:32
SPEAKER_01: For sure.
13:33
SPEAKER_01: I mean, we can get into that later about the men's side, but are you you don't have to be speci specific, but are you trying to bring any of the school craft girls over to Madonna?
13:47
SPEAKER_00: For sure.
13:48
SPEAKER_00: I think the ones that finished this past fall, uh, I've reached out to a handful of them.
13:53
SPEAKER_00: Some of them uh weren't interested.
13:56
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, another one was and then decided she wasn't gonna play.
13:59
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, one of the girls is actually going to Wayne State.
14:02
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
14:03
SPEAKER_00: Um Doug poached her.
14:05
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, that that Doug guy.
14:08
SPEAKER_00: Uh no, it's great.
14:10
SPEAKER_00: We think she's gonna be great for them.
14:11
SPEAKER_00: Uh really good player.
14:13
SPEAKER_00: Who is it?
14:13
SPEAKER_00: Uh Jessica Clyde.
14:15
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
14:15
SPEAKER_01: What position?
14:16
SPEAKER_00: Uh center forward attacking mid.
14:18
SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's a two-time All-American at school craft.
14:21
SPEAKER_00: So I mean she she banged in some goals and did a nice job.
14:26
SPEAKER_00: And she's strong and skillful.
14:28
SPEAKER_00: And um I I think Doug will really like her.
14:32
SPEAKER_00: So I think I think those things will be will be awesome.
14:35
SPEAKER_01: When you were at schoolcraft, like is it all Michigan kids?
14:38
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
14:39
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
14:39
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
14:40
SPEAKER_00: There's no housing for schoolcraft.
14:42
SPEAKER_00: It's one of the the things that makes it the hardest for so we're pretty much we I say we because I'm just used to being there.
14:49
SPEAKER_00: Plus on the on the wolf side, right?
14:51
SPEAKER_00: I live at school craft.
14:52
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
14:52
SPEAKER_00: You do.
14:53
SPEAKER_00: Um they it's pretty much like a hour, an hour and in.
14:58
SPEAKER_00: So we had some uh some kids that you know get up super early to make training.
15:03
SPEAKER_00: It was always like a 9 a.m.
15:05
SPEAKER_00: thing.
15:06
SPEAKER_00: Uh but you know, the interesting dynamic is a lot of the local kids, Northville, Novae, Lavonia, some of them, I I don't know if it's because they grow up with school craft in their backyard.
15:18
SPEAKER_00: I it appears to be a good thing.
15:19
SPEAKER_00: Because they're a stigma.
15:21
SPEAKER_00: 100%.
15:21
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
15:22
SPEAKER_00: And I do think some of that, now that Ken's been there for five years and have had success, like they've gone to nationals three years, uh three out of the five years.
15:31
SPEAKER_00: Last year, we were like we just missed getting an at-large bid.
15:36
SPEAKER_00: We uh we went on the road to Heartland and lost three-nothing to a team that lost uh I think two one in the national final.
15:42
SPEAKER_03: Right.
15:43
SPEAKER_00: And it was like they were better than us.
15:45
SPEAKER_00: And our resume was great, really kind of right up till then.
15:49
SPEAKER_00: But we had a bunch of freshmen too.
15:50
SPEAKER_00: I think we started nine freshmen last year.
15:53
SPEAKER_00: Um so but my hope kind of going back to the original question is I hope next year there there'll be a handful of school craft kids that'll want to come across to Madonna that I think I've created good relationships with.
16:06
SPEAKER_03: Right.
16:06
SPEAKER_00: Um certainly they've had a great soccer experience at Schoolcraft, and we're set up, we're gonna scrimmage them uh April 17th.
16:13
SPEAKER_00: It's a Friday.
16:15
SPEAKER_00: So you'll kind of see how it goes.
16:18
SPEAKER_01: Do you I mean, talking to anybody else at the Madonna uh in the Madonna athletic department, yeah, do they have that same problem with the local kids?
16:29
SPEAKER_01: I'm like, man, I'm not going to only Madonna.
16:32
SPEAKER_00: But Madonna has historically been great in the NAIA, right?
16:38
SPEAKER_00: Specifically in soccer.
16:39
SPEAKER_00: I mean, this yeah, we uh we just call this like the soccer mecca.
16:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh I mean, we're surrounded like in every direction you go.
16:47
SPEAKER_00: There's really good players and good coaches and good clubs.
16:50
SPEAKER_01: So many clubs, so many uh schools, and and yeah.
16:54
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
16:55
SPEAKER_00: Um I I haven't really heard that to be a thing here, being you know, a stigma of I'm not going there.
17:02
SPEAKER_00: I do think it's looked at different because it's a four-year-old.
17:05
SPEAKER_01: This episode is brought to you by the North American Soccer Expo.
17:08
SPEAKER_01: If you remember last year when I had Alexi Lawless on, so many of you were blown away and kept on messaging me like, how did you get Alexi Lawless to talk to you?
17:19
SPEAKER_01: And to be honest with you, it was the North American Soccer Expo.
17:23
SPEAKER_01: The Expo has workshops and seminars and field presentations from top coaches and industry experts.
17:31
SPEAKER_01: I will be there this year 100%.
17:34
SPEAKER_01: I'll be setting up on podcast remote.
17:36
SPEAKER_01: In addition to the podcasts that I'm going to be filming there, I'm also going to have an open hour where any coach at the expo or anybody at the expo can come sit down at the chair and have a one-on-one 15-minute chat with me, and you guys can just come and chat and talk about whatever you want.
17:55
SPEAKER_01: North American Central Expo, July 30th to August 1st, Novi, Michigan.
18:00
SPEAKER_01: I'll see you there.
18:02
SPEAKER_00: Um, and we do have housing, so like that changes it.
18:06
SPEAKER_00: Like we're not a huge campus by any means.
18:09
SPEAKER_00: Um, but if you're looking to get away from you know mom and dad or live a little bit farther away, you know, you can provide that.
18:15
SPEAKER_00: And what I like what I say to our recruits is we're in a great safe, you know, suburban area.
18:23
SPEAKER_01: You're not in the middle of nowhere, like rest in peace, Sienna Heights.
18:27
SPEAKER_01: For sure.
18:27
SPEAKER_01: You know, some of my best friends went to Sienna Heights and uh growing up, and it's that's sad.
18:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, mine too, for the record.
18:36
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I mean that was such a high level.
18:40
SPEAKER_01: Though the you know, boys and girls.
18:43
SPEAKER_01: For sure.
18:44
SPEAKER_01: I mean, and I just don't I'm not sure New York has an NAIA program anywhere in the state.
18:51
SPEAKER_01: I'm not, I don't not that I am aware of.
18:55
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's just a level that nobody knows about out there.
18:59
SPEAKER_01: It's like, and I'm watching their D1 team, and I'm like, D two teams could beat you, D three teams could beat you, and NAIA teams can certainly beat you, and then some JUCOs.
19:10
SPEAKER_00: Right.
19:10
SPEAKER_00: And it's just like there's so many like levels.
19:13
SPEAKER_00: Well, a lot of people don't, and this took me a little bit, and these are one of the things that I've started to learn is we're real similar to Division II, and what what it means in regards to we can offer athletic scholarships, we can offer academic scholarships.
19:25
SPEAKER_00: Division three only offers academic, D two offers both, obviously, division one offers both.
19:32
SPEAKER_00: Right.
19:32
SPEAKER_00: The probably the biggest difference between us and a D two is they're still um funded by the state, and they tend to be like bigger institutions where we're like a lot of NAI, I think I don't even know an NAI that's not private schools, right?
19:48
SPEAKER_00: Um which makes it interesting because there's no additional costs for internationals or kids from Canada that want to come to our school, where if you went to Western or Michigan State, there's always an additional cost for an international student.
20:02
SPEAKER_00: Right.
20:03
SPEAKER_00: Which makes that part a little bit easier for me in regards to recruiting and talking about numbers because it it stays the same.
20:10
SPEAKER_01: Right.
20:11
SPEAKER_01: Do you have a lot of internationals here on the on the women's side?
20:14
SPEAKER_00: We l half our roster is from Canada.
20:17
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
20:18
SPEAKER_01: I really don't count Canada.
20:20
SPEAKER_01: Do you count Canada as international?
20:21
SPEAKER_01: Not really.
20:22
SPEAKER_01: But at the D2 level or the D1 level, do you have to count Canada as a international?
20:30
SPEAKER_00: I I don't know.
20:31
SPEAKER_01: I don't think that should.
20:33
SPEAKER_01: Like I feel like if it if you're from Mexico, the islands and Caribbean and stuff, and then Canada, I think you should be considered just same uh same continent.
20:45
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
20:47
SPEAKER_01: So like same fees and and whatnot, but that's just just me.
20:53
SPEAKER_01: But when uh how okay, talk about your recruiting.
20:57
SPEAKER_01: Where are you recruiting and what are you like everybody talks about like high school soccer, you know, you can't recruit.
21:04
SPEAKER_01: Do are you recruiting high school uh soccer or are you more like going to it?
21:11
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, and I I'm still learning on who I'm recruiting and who I'm not recruiting, to be fair.
21:17
SPEAKER_00: Um our goal is through this you know, winter months where there was a bunch of different showcases, a lot of local stuff, DCFC, Jags, Tigers.
21:29
SPEAKER_00: Um trying to think if I if I'm leaving anybody out.
21:32
SPEAKER_00: Um we tried to get to just about every event that was local.
21:36
SPEAKER_00: From there, um, then we start to build like a little bit of a collection of names, and then we're starting to follow up with them.
21:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh I try to reach out to people every seven to fourteen days in a in a text or an email, try to include the parents as much as I can, unless I don't have their contact information.
21:54
SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
21:55
SPEAKER_00: Um and then from them, like the people that I've had communications.
22:00
SPEAKER_00: With, I'm asking for high school schedules.
22:02
SPEAKER_00: So hopefully I can get out to a game where Nick Atwood or Natalie Mertz can go and check them out and just check in, say hi.
22:10
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, our our hope is to create great relationships with people and then like create an awesome soccer experience.
22:17
SPEAKER_00: Right.
22:17
SPEAKER_00: Um and I'm not sure if if that's always been done.
22:21
SPEAKER_00: You know, I get conflicting reports about like people's experience here.
22:26
SPEAKER_00: Um and and I don't know if that's an individual thing or or what.
22:30
SPEAKER_00: So I for me I just emphasize treating people well, like we were talking about meeting with the kids and taught telling them kind of where they stand.
22:36
SPEAKER_00: I think it's super important because when you have 40 kids, if you're the I don't know, 35th player and you think you should be on the first team, you're probably gonna create problems.
22:48
SPEAKER_00: Um not because you're mean, but because you feel like you deserve a certain thing.
22:52
SPEAKER_00: And I mean I've been through that as a player, right?
22:55
SPEAKER_00: Like I think I should be in the starting lineup, I'm not disgruntled grumpy kid on the bench.
23:00
SPEAKER_00: Um and at least they know their role, then I think you can make progress from that moment.
23:06
SPEAKER_00: So just defining everybody's roles, I think, is super important.
23:09
SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, again, going back to the high school stuff, we'll we'll be around at some high school games.
23:15
SPEAKER_00: For me, it's just a little tricky with with club season.
23:18
SPEAKER_00: Um, this is the busiest season uh for me personally.
23:21
SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I think I think I'll be around in some high school games.
23:25
SPEAKER_00: And uh for us, we like talking to Skip last night, he said he hasn't even started recruiting 27s, and he had his some good reasons on why.
23:33
SPEAKER_00: And I told him, I think, well, I've started recruiting 27s, but if we don't get them, potentially it changes my mind on how I you know start to pursue players in the future.
23:43
SPEAKER_03: Right.
23:44
SPEAKER_00: Um and again, if you create a great experience and the girls that are at your school say, Hey, like Scott and Nick and Nat are doing a great job, we love our coaches staff, uh, we did this, we went to this event, you know what I mean?
23:57
SPEAKER_00: Like it's something that the kids really love, um, then it's great.
24:00
SPEAKER_00: But again, we're a small, we're a small campus, so if you're looking to be in a big schoolroom with, you know, 40 kids or 200 kids uh in a big lecture hall, like that's not this isn't the place, you know.
24:15
SPEAKER_00: But if learning and creating relationships is really important, we're like one to twelve, one to thirteen student to professor ratio, um, I think it creates a pretty good environment for kids to learn and focus on their studies and things like that.
24:28
SPEAKER_00: So um I think there's a lot to offer here.
24:32
SPEAKER_00: Right.
24:33
SPEAKER_01: How do you okay?
24:34
SPEAKER_01: So you're you're only three months in.
24:37
SPEAKER_01: How how do you what's your top priority?
24:42
SPEAKER_01: Is it getting to know all the players first that are that are already here, or is it the training and the regimen and the the schedule and putting your imprint on it through your coaching style and whatnot?
24:57
SPEAKER_00: What's like what's your priority number one?
25:00
SPEAKER_00: Two priorities.
25:01
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
25:02
SPEAKER_00: First one was I was introduced right before winter break, so all the girls left.
25:08
SPEAKER_00: I met with about two-thirds of them, tried to give them a little bit of information about me.
25:13
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and I thought it was important in that meeting.
25:16
SPEAKER_00: Like, we talked about it being our team.
25:18
SPEAKER_00: Like, sure, I'm gonna make final decisions, but we get to decide how it goes.
25:23
SPEAKER_00: Um, we can decide to work hard, we can decide to not train on our own, we can decide to do extra stuff or not, right?
25:31
SPEAKER_00: Um, do we pick up garbage?
25:33
SPEAKER_00: Do we leave the bench mess?
25:35
SPEAKER_00: Are we professional?
25:36
SPEAKER_00: Are we on time?
25:38
SPEAKER_00: Like, we get to decide all that.
25:40
SPEAKER_00: Um and I just kind of told them like if you're gonna choose your way, then it's not really gonna work.
25:45
SPEAKER_00: You're gonna find yourself on the second team or reserve team, or it's gonna be, you know, it's just not gonna work, and we'll probably go in a different direction.
25:54
SPEAKER_00: Fortunately for me, a huge, big group of great kids, uh legit, like no one's ever late.
26:01
SPEAKER_00: Uh they treat each other well, they support each other.
26:04
SPEAKER_00: So I think that is a big part of the coaches before me, creating some rules and a little bit of foundation of what's acceptable and what's not.
26:13
SPEAKER_02: Right.
26:14
SPEAKER_00: So that was one piece.
26:15
SPEAKER_00: And then the second one was trying to affect soccer as much as I could in the first few months.
26:21
SPEAKER_00: So excuse me, in the um in previous winters, I think they've done a lot of weight room stuff.
26:27
SPEAKER_00: They've used what we call the old gym here where they used to play basketball and volleyball and all those things.
26:33
SPEAKER_00: Do you do futsall or whatnot, or what?
26:35
SPEAKER_00: We we don't.
26:36
SPEAKER_00: So we've used Lavoni Athletic District, which is not far from here, it's a mile or so.
26:41
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then we use schoolcraft on Wednesday morning, super early, 7 a.m.
26:45
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
26:50
SPEAKER_00: We're able to play 11v11.
26:52
SPEAKER_00: We video some sessions, watch a little bit of film, try to talk about little build-out stuff, pressing cues, things like that.
27:00
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, and I'm not saying it's perfect.
27:03
SPEAKER_00: You know, I I talk to some people at Division Ones and they're four days a week and three weight rooms, and I go, like, man, we're we're not even close to that.
27:12
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but we're just we're trying to make it feasible so that studies are important, but we're able to impact soccer.
27:19
SPEAKER_00: And just over the 20 plus years I've been in it, I just feel if if it's not three contact points a week, you're not gonna improve.
27:27
SPEAKER_00: So, two is for me the minimum to stay kind of right where you're at.
27:32
SPEAKER_00: If you want to improve, improve, it's got to be three or four.
27:35
SPEAKER_00: Um, and for people with big goals and aspirations, then you're talking four or five, six.
27:40
SPEAKER_00: And then periodization comes into play with you know what what's the load on the day, like you know, is it high intensity?
27:47
SPEAKER_00: Is it you know, a lot of technique and dribbling and passing and not physical contact and things like that.
27:53
SPEAKER_00: So we've tried to mess with that a little bit, but with three days a week, we try to ramp it up and and push the kids, but big focus on technical development, right?
28:02
SPEAKER_00: You know, if they're gonna be here for four years, we have to improve the player individually, yes.
28:08
SPEAKER_01: I think that gets lost sometimes in college.
28:10
SPEAKER_01: Oh at even the older ages of of club, I feel like that gets lost because it's all about team talk team tactics and group tactics and everything, yeah.
28:22
SPEAKER_01: And everybody forgets about the individual development, and that's why like next level is is next level and whatnot, you know.
28:30
SPEAKER_01: A bunch of great guys that do that too.
28:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
28:33
SPEAKER_01: And and I think that's needed.
28:36
SPEAKER_01: And how I mean, when you are talking to a player, when when let's say you're talking to a recruit, do they get worried about the second team stuff?
28:51
SPEAKER_01: Like, we're like, Oh, am I gonna be on the first team or the second team?
28:54
SPEAKER_00: Or it always comes up.
28:56
SPEAKER_00: I try to be specific.
28:58
SPEAKER_00: Like, if I think you can come in and start, right?
29:02
SPEAKER_00: I don't ever tell them that I think they can start because I would never want to push them down that path.
29:06
SPEAKER_00: They come in, they don't start.
29:08
SPEAKER_00: You said I was gonna start, I I don't even want to.
29:10
SPEAKER_01: And then you get into broken promises, and then everybody badmouths you, and yeah.
29:14
SPEAKER_00: So what what I tend to say is, hey, I really think you can compete to start.
29:20
SPEAKER_00: When you come in, that's gonna be up to you to show like you're part of the top 11 or you're part of the next bit, and then you know, the scholarship we offer kind of reflects that.
29:30
SPEAKER_00: So the bigger the number, the more we think you can impact it.
29:33
SPEAKER_00: The smaller the number, the more I'm telling you.
29:35
SPEAKER_00: Like, we've had conversations with some kids and go, like, look, you're gonna come in, I think you're gonna be on the reserve team.
29:40
SPEAKER_00: And it's true, this this next fall, we're gonna have a lot of seniors.
29:45
SPEAKER_00: So this fall, for all the kids coming in, it's gonna be really difficult to impact the team and play right away.
29:51
SPEAKER_00: But the year after, there's gonna be a lot of spots up for grabs.
29:54
SPEAKER_00: And I I love some of our freshmen and sophomores.
29:57
SPEAKER_00: I think there's some really good kids with a lot of upward potential.
30:01
SPEAKER_00: Um but again, are they gonna work for it?
30:04
SPEAKER_00: Are they gonna improve?
30:06
SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, we can guide them down the right path.
30:08
SPEAKER_00: But um, so those are the conversations you have.
30:10
SPEAKER_00: I you know, my goal is to try to try to be as transparent because I don't I just don't want to work backwards.
30:16
SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna tell you you're on the first team, you're on the second team.
30:19
SPEAKER_00: Um and I've just yeah, I've tried to really just lay it out for them.
30:25
SPEAKER_01: I wonder, okay, so many, so many college players or or high school seniors that are going to play college soccer, they don't know the schedule of when they oh it's just D2, or oh, it's just D three, you know, it's not the same.
30:44
SPEAKER_01: And then their schedule is like, oh, I didn't sign up for this.
30:47
SPEAKER_01: I didn't I didn't want to be a D1 athlete.
30:49
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
30:49
SPEAKER_01: And then I think that with you going three days a week, you could hit the sweet spot of so many players because that's all they want.
30:59
SPEAKER_01: They don't want to do lifting three times a week and whatnot.
31:03
SPEAKER_01: Right.
31:04
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I uh how go ahead.
31:08
SPEAKER_00: We we do have a girl that does like our fitness program and stuff, so she has designed some exercises, we've shared some exercises for the kids to do on their own.
31:18
SPEAKER_00: So for all the people that want to hit the gym and do some extra stuff, um, or they're free to ask me to jump in with any of the boys' teams if we think like a fit is right.
31:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so for the people that want more, we can always provide more, but at a minimum, and I don't I don't think we've been like I said, three is a lot at Madonna.
31:36
SPEAKER_00: That has not been the case prior.
31:38
SPEAKER_00: I think it's been weight room stuff, and until they come back from spring break, then I think they've ramped it up and done three or four days, and you add some spring games and stuff like that.
31:47
SPEAKER_00: So consistently from now to the end of the season, it's it's probably like three and a half, four because you're gonna add some friendlies and some extra stuff from time to time.
31:57
SPEAKER_00: But yeah, in that like the dog days of winter, January to February, three days and trying to get the most out of them and get them back concentrating on their studies.
32:07
SPEAKER_01: How's the transition going from non being a part of a program with no scholarships to one now you're in charge of these scholarships?
32:16
SPEAKER_01: Did you have to learn, or did you already know a lot about that?
32:19
SPEAKER_00: Uh because I know nothing about that.
32:22
SPEAKER_00: JUCO can provide athletic scholarships.
32:25
SPEAKER_00: Oh, they can?
32:26
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
32:26
SPEAKER_00: But schoolcraft didn't.
32:28
SPEAKER_00: No, they do.
32:28
SPEAKER_00: Oh, they do?
32:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they do.
32:30
SPEAKER_00: It's just it's a whole different level.
32:32
SPEAKER_00: It's just a whole different level of money.
32:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
32:35
SPEAKER_00: Um, I think if you look at Lawrence Tech, it's like 50 grand to go there for a year, right?
32:39
SPEAKER_00: If you look at Madonna, it's around 30 grand.
32:42
SPEAKER_00: If you look at Schoolcraft, it's like four or five grand.
32:46
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
32:46
SPEAKER_00: Um, but currently, if you are in uh Wayne County, uh that's where Schoolcraft is, right?
32:54
SPEAKER_00: We're in Wayne County.
32:55
SPEAKER_00: Um basically Madonna.
32:57
SPEAKER_01: Uh is Madonna Oakland?
32:59
SPEAKER_01: Or is it Wayne?
33:00
SPEAKER_00: I'm sure I'm pretty sure it's Wayne.
33:01
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
33:02
SPEAKER_00: We're kind of right on the cusp.
33:03
SPEAKER_00: Then it's Oakland a little bit north.
33:05
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
33:06
SPEAKER_00: Um but if you're in district in the same county, you can attend Schoolcraft for zero dollars.
33:13
SPEAKER_02: Really?
33:14
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
33:14
unknown: Yep.
33:15
SPEAKER_00: Gretchen Whitmore changed that um man, three three years ago.
33:20
SPEAKER_00: Really?
33:21
SPEAKER_00: And like when I've talked to Ken and other coaches at Schoolcraft, it's it's a big deal because whoever wins the next you know governor election and make sure that we keep that in impact.
33:32
SPEAKER_00: Well, if you're at Madonna, you're going, I don't know if we want that, you know.
33:37
SPEAKER_00: Just because like that's what we like.
33:39
SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, it's like again, one of my best friends, and we laugh because people send us the same emails and we're going after similar kids, and I just go, uh we're we're just we're gonna offer different things, so we're not fighting over kids.
33:52
SPEAKER_00: Like, I would never lose my friendship with somebody over a young woman that I barely know, right?
33:57
SPEAKER_00: Like, do you think that happens?
33:59
SPEAKER_00: I know it happens.
34:01
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know it happens.
34:02
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I've heard of different scenarios, and I always do I know all the details of it.
34:06
SPEAKER_00: No, no, and I I'm not the guy that asks.
34:10
SPEAKER_00: But you know, I just think, well, and and here's the greatest part go to school craft, it'll it'll save you a bunch of money, right?
34:19
SPEAKER_00: You're gonna get a great soccer experience.
34:21
SPEAKER_00: The team's been excellent, then come to Madonna.
34:24
SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
34:24
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, and they they played Davenport the other day.
34:27
SPEAKER_00: I was hoping to see a little bit more of it, but I kind of popped in, and you know, my my hope is just to continue great relationships there.
34:34
SPEAKER_00: Of course.
34:34
SPEAKER_00: Um but don't get me wrong, we we want them to come into Madonna too, right?
34:39
SPEAKER_00: So I think a good balance and then figuring out, and that's still what I'm doing, is what are the areas where I can have the most success in terms of recruiting and finding the right level player and and then trying to find some JUCO transfers, whether or not it's school craft or somewhere else in the country.
34:57
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, there's a lot in there, and I think every couple weeks I form a little bit of a new opinion.
35:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
35:05
SPEAKER_00: But but yeah, always always learning.
35:08
SPEAKER_00: It's been interesting.
35:09
SPEAKER_01: How many scholarships or how many how see, I don't even know how like scholarships work.
35:16
SPEAKER_01: How many total scholarships do you have to give?
35:19
SPEAKER_01: And then you just chop it up however you want, right?
35:23
SPEAKER_01: Kinda.
35:24
SPEAKER_01: Kinda.
35:24
SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
35:25
SPEAKER_01: Kinda.
35:25
SPEAKER_00: I think, and I'm gonna say I think.
35:28
SPEAKER_00: Okay, because I'm gonna go this route.
35:29
SPEAKER_00: Division one or division two, I think they get the 28 or whatever.
35:34
SPEAKER_01: It depends on I I just found this out.
35:36
SPEAKER_01: It depends on the school.
35:38
SPEAKER_01: Not everybody is fully funded.
35:40
SPEAKER_01: No, like Michigan compared to like Western Michigan, they are not created equal.
35:45
SPEAKER_01: Western gets more money for their women's soccer program than Michigan, supposedly.
35:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's so wild to me.
35:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
35:53
SPEAKER_00: Is that how NAI schools are for the most part, too?
35:56
SPEAKER_00: So I keep I'm nosy about this now that I've learned more because I just I just I want like how do you do it and what what's your budget and how are things like um so always trying to find out more things for us?
36:08
SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit tricky.
36:09
SPEAKER_00: We there's not like you don't get 10 full scholarships.
36:13
SPEAKER_00: Got it.
36:14
SPEAKER_00: Our scholarships are based on the amount of players we have.
36:17
SPEAKER_00: So every time you hit a number, like you potentially get more money for that.
36:22
SPEAKER_00: And then uh at a certain number, I'm I'm saying certain, I don't want to be too specific.
36:28
SPEAKER_00: Um we get uh our budget increases okay, because if I have 28 players or I have 40, like I need a bigger budget because we gotta rent vans or another bus.
36:40
SPEAKER_00: Uh I need more coaches, right?
36:42
SPEAKER_00: So that budget grows, um, which the school wants because there's more kids coming to their to our school, right?
36:51
SPEAKER_00: So um we the goal is to be at 28, 30 kids.
36:59
SPEAKER_00: But if we're gonna have a reserve team, you just need more players than that.
37:02
SPEAKER_00: So the number for me is really right around 40.
37:04
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're gonna be a little bit over that in year one.
37:08
SPEAKER_00: Um and we'll kind of see what happens after after this fall, and we have a bunch of kids graduate, and again, I think it's 16 or 17 kids that'll graduate next uh next spring.
37:18
SPEAKER_00: Um, I wouldn't expect the 27 class to be, you know, 17 kids.
37:24
SPEAKER_00: Right.
37:24
SPEAKER_00: So I would expect our number to come a little bit closer to 40.
37:28
SPEAKER_01: Is it is it difficult?
37:30
SPEAKER_00: Okay, what age groups do you have at Wolves?
37:33
SPEAKER_00: Uh U 14 boys, MLS AD, and then U 16 AD boys.
37:39
SPEAKER_01: So okay.
37:41
SPEAKER_01: Going from 16-year-old boys to college-age women, is that like a tough like do you coach them differently, or do you find yourself you are who you are, and you just stay the same?
37:55
SPEAKER_00: I think information is the same.
37:57
SPEAKER_00: The delivery of the information is different.
37:59
SPEAKER_00: For sure, right?
38:00
SPEAKER_00: Like I the my U 14s, they're learning, they're growing as people, right?
38:06
SPEAKER_00: But they are constantly pushing boundaries of the egos, yeah.
38:13
SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
38:14
SPEAKER_00: Well, I would tell you the egos are bigger on the U 16s, okay, but they're just like they're just goofballs, man.
38:20
SPEAKER_00: They can't keep them their hands to themselves.
38:22
SPEAKER_00: No, so like you bring them in, you're trying to make a coaching point, and you got three people in the back, like kicking a soccer ball at each other or trying to meg each other, you know, and that that is on a good day.
38:32
SPEAKER_00: On a different day, they're doing something way worse.
38:35
SPEAKER_00: And then I'm just going, like, what is wrong with you?
38:37
SPEAKER_00: Would you like stop it?
38:39
SPEAKER_00: And then when you get to Madonna, it's probably like a breath of fresh air, because it's like mature people, mature people is it, and that so that is one of the biggest differences is we have older, more mature women than you do at school craft.
38:53
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
38:54
SPEAKER_00: So, and I'm not calling the girls at school craft immature, I'm just saying, like you learn, and and you know this from like your own.
39:02
SPEAKER_00: I don't want to tell you what you know, I know this from my own experience at 18 to 21.
39:06
SPEAKER_00: What I knew about the game, how I behaved, uh, especially in social settings, it just changes.
39:12
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
39:12
SPEAKER_00: And like some of our leaders at Madonna, like really impressive young women.
39:17
SPEAKER_00: Like I I told one of the girls last night, I'm like, you I can't even believe like you are impressive.
39:22
SPEAKER_00: Like, that's what I told her.
39:23
SPEAKER_00: Like, just responsible leader on time.
39:27
SPEAKER_00: Um, it's like the Dan Campbell.
39:29
SPEAKER_00: I go, like, you're leader of people.
39:31
SPEAKER_00: Like Dan Campbell could stand in front of people, and man, I'd like you'd get me to run through a wall.
39:35
SPEAKER_00: I think exactly.
39:37
SPEAKER_00: And that that is how some of our leaders are.
39:39
SPEAKER_00: Like, they're they're awesome people.
39:41
SPEAKER_01: So what's the age on on Madonna?
39:45
SPEAKER_01: Like, what's the youngest?
39:46
SPEAKER_01: What's the oldest?
39:47
SPEAKER_00: I think I think it's I think it's 22.
39:52
SPEAKER_00: It might be 23.
39:53
SPEAKER_00: That's normal.
39:53
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
39:54
SPEAKER_00: 22.
39:55
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's no like 24 or 20.
39:56
SPEAKER_01: It's not like it's not like the men's side.
39:58
SPEAKER_01: Z has like a 35-year-old.
40:01
SPEAKER_00: I don't think he's that old.
40:03
SPEAKER_00: I was kidding.
40:04
SPEAKER_00: He's yeah, player coach.
40:06
SPEAKER_01: Z.
40:06
SPEAKER_01: Oh, but uh yeah.
40:10
SPEAKER_01: How I mean, okay, you just uh tell me about your A license.
40:16
SPEAKER_01: Because obviously, uh back when I uh did all my licensing, I actually roomed with Z when he was auditing his A.
40:25
SPEAKER_01: I was taking my C at Bradenton in Florida years ago.
40:29
SPEAKER_01: This is like maybe 2010.
40:32
SPEAKER_01: Um okay, so what stage are you in your A license?
40:37
SPEAKER_00: So all of our in-persons are over, okay.
40:40
SPEAKER_00: All of our meetings are over.
40:42
SPEAKER_01: Did you have to go to Kansas City every single time?
40:45
SPEAKER_00: Three times.
40:45
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
40:46
SPEAKER_00: Three times.
40:47
SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm originally from Kansas City.
40:48
SPEAKER_01: Okay, but I'm a Chiefs fan.
40:50
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that I I well, I like the Chiefs, and it's like the Patriots, like, unless you're a Patriots fan, like I just get tired of the team that always wins.
40:58
SPEAKER_00: Of course.
40:59
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
40:59
SPEAKER_00: So I'll I'm ready for somebody else to win.
41:01
SPEAKER_00: No, I think Kansas City is an awesome, awesome area.
41:04
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
41:04
SPEAKER_00: And then where they like put us up, although you're never there at the hotel, like legit, you come in, you are at the training center for 13 hours a day.
41:12
SPEAKER_00: You're there at 8 a.m.
41:14
SPEAKER_00: and a lot of times you don't leave until 9 p.m.
41:17
SPEAKER_00: just because that's how it goes.
41:18
SPEAKER_00: Like you're on the field a few different times, you're in the classroom, you're back on the field, you're in the classroom, and then it ends with uh groups of coaches, usually they're like teams of three or four people running a session.
41:31
SPEAKER_00: So you have assistant coaches, um, you know, they give you a topic.
41:36
SPEAKER_00: Uh during the day, you do on-field prep.
41:39
SPEAKER_00: It's funny, like you practice your practice session, and then you get inside and you deliberate on it.
41:45
SPEAKER_00: You describe your changes and what you're planning on doing in the evening with the kids.
41:49
SPEAKER_00: And then the hope is after you've done it for your peers and the like the educators, that you've really kind of buttoned up your session.
41:56
SPEAKER_00: So when nighttime rolls around, you've already practiced it, you've studied it, you know all the kind of ins and outs.
42:02
SPEAKER_00: And I would just say the most the thing that I've taken away the most is just the really focusing on something that's intentional.
42:17
SPEAKER_00: Like every behavior you do, like it's got to be intentional.
42:20
SPEAKER_00: So whether or not it's ball striking, receiving with the proper foot, back foot, front foot, you know, that that debate.
42:27
SPEAKER_00: Um driving with your first touch, you know, like that's been a big emphasis with with my two groups.
42:34
SPEAKER_00: Um, like where we're at in our periodization is really like creating numerical advantages.
42:40
SPEAKER_00: So one of them is like driving to commit a player to try to create like a 2v1, um, or changing the point of attack, changing play to try to find like a 3v2 or a 4v3, and then same deal, like a positive first touch, you drive on your first touch, commit them.
42:55
SPEAKER_00: Um they take away the pass, then dribble inside and look to see if you can combine.
42:59
SPEAKER_00: So that those have been like areas that I've tried to emphasize the last couple weeks with with my boys' teams.
43:04
SPEAKER_00: Right.
43:05
SPEAKER_00: Girls' teams kind of different, but you got to pick a team for your A license.
43:08
SPEAKER_00: So my U-14 boys is the group that I've picked.
43:11
SPEAKER_00: I'm doing like an individual development plan with one of the kids.
43:16
SPEAKER_00: Um, it's a lot.
43:17
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I think it's helped me grow, like in regards to planning the whole season.
43:23
SPEAKER_00: Right.
43:23
SPEAKER_00: And of course, in the season, you're gonna make adjustments.
43:26
SPEAKER_00: You know, things happen in the game, and then you're always allowed to change.
43:30
SPEAKER_00: You know, no one's forcing you down a certain path.
43:34
SPEAKER_00: Um, but just being able to lay it out, and it was great because I had to uh prepare uh like a quick presentation for what was it, six guys in my educator when I was in Kansas City, and the topic was creating like uh numerical advantage.
43:51
SPEAKER_00: Um and the emphasis was really on changing the point of attack.
43:55
SPEAKER_00: And I went back and I watched three games specifically, two of the games were games.
44:00
SPEAKER_00: That we had to analyze and give data back on.
44:03
SPEAKER_00: And in those games, I think we had only changed the point of attack ten times.
44:07
SPEAKER_00: And I go, it's like an eighty-minute game.
44:09
SPEAKER_00: I I don't expect you to do it forty, right?
44:12
SPEAKER_00: But ten, it was like ten, seven, and seven.
44:17
SPEAKER_00: And I go, like, we're not even looking to change play.
44:19
SPEAKER_00: Like we win it and we're playing beyond, or we're just trying to break a line with our first pass.
44:25
SPEAKER_01: Um and then what goes in what goes into changing the point of attack, though?
44:30
SPEAKER_01: Is it a big ball, or is it considered if the seven finds the eight and then the eight finds the eleven or whatever?
44:38
SPEAKER_00: For me, it was any of those things.
44:39
SPEAKER_00: So it it wasn't just back line changing the point of attack, it could be seven bending back because he's up against a wide back and center back.
44:47
SPEAKER_00: He finds a midfielder, he finds the pivot, we get it out to the other side.
44:51
SPEAKER_00: Um, so in all of that, and again, young kids, U 14s, it's true, anxious, they get close to the box, they want to drive, they want to take players off.
45:00
SPEAKER_01: We score in 24 seconds.
45:02
SPEAKER_01: It's basically like let's build, we're gonna be so patient in the build-up, and then once we get to half, how quickly can we score?
45:11
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like what it's just it's you soccer.
45:16
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, and and I'm not telling you you gotta make a bunch of passes.
45:19
SPEAKER_00: Uh right.
45:20
SPEAKER_00: Uh and I haven't looked at the data, but years ago, the data was always like the most goals scored were in zero passes, the next amount of goals were scored in one pass and two passes.
45:29
SPEAKER_00: And if you think like think free kicks, PKs, of course.
45:33
SPEAKER_00: Um and the winning the ball and the winning, especially building on the back uh these days.
45:38
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
45:39
SPEAKER_00: So I like the message to my teams is like we want to play and play through the lines, not at the detriment of the team.
45:44
SPEAKER_00: We don't want to pass it to them and have them kick it in our goal, and now we're going, right?
45:48
SPEAKER_00: You gotta make more passes.
45:50
SPEAKER_00: Like, that's not it.
45:50
SPEAKER_00: The game's not about that.
45:51
SPEAKER_00: The game's about being effective.
45:53
SPEAKER_00: So if we can be effective and play from our center back to our forward and he can do quality things with it, let's do that, right?
46:01
SPEAKER_00: But then if you take that away, then we're gonna play our six, and then we're gonna change it, and then we're gonna try to create an overload on the left side and try to get in that way.
46:08
SPEAKER_00: So I think being flexible, and I always say like the best teams I've ever coached can play direct and win aerial duels and like head the ball and be competitive, like with a real good spirit.
46:20
SPEAKER_03: Right.
46:21
SPEAKER_00: Um the teams that can only play through the lines, eventually lose and get stuck building out of the back, and the teams that only play long, you're gonna find a bigger, faster team one time.
46:31
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, like having a variety and and not saying that's wrong and being okay because you know, at trial, it's sure we get to pick, but it's I don't know, 40 kids you get to pick from.
46:43
SPEAKER_00: Um and then like I expect them to play like that.
46:48
SPEAKER_00: Uh no, I think like we gotta figure out the kids we have and then change the personnel.
46:52
SPEAKER_01: And then just be able to adapt on the fly because maybe a team isn't pressing.
46:56
SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, then we gotta play a different way.
46:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
46:59
SPEAKER_01: Or if they are pressing, maybe we can unlock them and just you know get them off our back a little bit.
47:03
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, keep them on us.
47:05
SPEAKER_00: Well, and two weeks ago we played uh um, you know, Simone, he's with uh Michigan Bucks.
47:09
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
47:10
SPEAKER_00: They kind of set a line of confrontation in the first half, and then the second half they really pressed us.
47:16
SPEAKER_00: So we had mapped some things out, and of course, I just and Simone will probably hear this.
47:21
SPEAKER_00: I just thought Simone outcoached us.
47:22
SPEAKER_01: Simone does listen.
47:23
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have Simone on.
47:25
SPEAKER_00: Great, great.
47:26
SPEAKER_00: Um but on the day with our 2010s, I felt like I got outcoached because like they pressed us in the second half.
47:33
SPEAKER_00: It really kind of threw us through a loop.
47:35
SPEAKER_00: And like I'm giving them information I think helped, but on the day, um, it was just a good little thing that that he had done, and he probably doesn't want to hear the other like about his tens.
47:46
SPEAKER_00: If anyone's listening, his tens low block, and then they press you in the second half.
47:51
SPEAKER_01: It's kind of genius because then you adapt or you try to like change at halftime, and then it's like completely different game plan in the scene.
47:59
SPEAKER_00: I spent halftime talking about it.
48:01
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
48:02
SPEAKER_01: And then this game is completely different, it's smart.
48:04
SPEAKER_00: It is.
48:05
SPEAKER_00: Man.
48:06
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Columbus crew used to do that to us when I was coaching like our homegrown back then, it was just academy.
48:12
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, DA.
48:13
SPEAKER_00: But that was like that was one of their things at like lower block and they press, or they would play uh 442, 433, like and they would change the system.
48:22
SPEAKER_01: How do you like the new homegrown and uh the academy setup so far?
48:30
SPEAKER_01: Um I mean, we're still only in year one of this.
48:33
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love it.
48:34
SPEAKER_00: I love it.
48:35
SPEAKER_00: I think um, I mean, and and personally, so I'm I'm our AD director, so I was the director of our ECNL teams, then I was the director of our NAL team, still am doing NAL and NAD.
48:47
SPEAKER_01: Are you guys in ECNL at all anymore?
48:49
SPEAKER_00: No, gone.
48:51
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
48:51
SPEAKER_00: No, they're you know, I think they're entitled to do whatever they want with their league and things, but I thought we had a great relationship with all the teams and things in in our at least in our conference.
49:03
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
49:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh and even Jason Cutney for that matter.
49:06
SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, it just uh I I think in the end it was just time to to move on.
49:12
SPEAKER_00: They were getting a lot of pushback about teams that have academy or homegrown level teams having their second team in the C.
49:18
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they want their first team.
49:19
SPEAKER_01: You want they want their first team in the ECNL, and it's like, uh no, that's not gonna happen.
49:25
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were kind of nudging us, and then the NAL's thing kind of came out, and it was like kind of simultaneous where we were gonna put a team in NAL, um, and then they were kind of like putting the hammer down where if you don't put your teams in, you know, we could move on without you kind of deal.
49:43
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it is what it is.
49:45
SPEAKER_00: We felt that that level was great for our second teams because we thought we had two great platforms.
49:50
SPEAKER_00: And I would just tell you the league I'm in now, uh it is certainly at that level.
49:54
SPEAKER_00: Like there are really good teams, um, people are doing a great job, and of course the top teams like the Michigan Bucks slash Liverpool, the you know, Michigan Tigers, teams in Chicago, Galaxy, um FC United.
50:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
50:11
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
50:11
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
50:12
SPEAKER_00: Soccer.
50:12
SPEAKER_00: I mean, though whether or not it's your top team or their second team, they're great, they're great clubs.
50:17
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they have tons of good players.
50:20
SPEAKER_00: Um and then here locally, right?
50:22
SPEAKER_00: Like outside of the Tigers and Bucks, Jags, Vardar, Midwest, like those teams do a good job.
50:29
SPEAKER_00: And um so it's great because the travel has really gone the other way.
50:35
SPEAKER_00: So a lot of weekends, it's way less, which for me is great.
50:38
SPEAKER_00: I it makes no sense.
50:40
SPEAKER_00: We got to drive 10 hours or play a competitive game.
50:43
SPEAKER_00: We can drive less than an hour and get great games and get a great game.
50:47
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you play if you played them twice a year, you got great you got 12 games just in Michigan, basically.
50:55
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
50:55
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it was tough.
50:56
SPEAKER_00: Like uh this past weekend we played Jags, results went our way, but there were like a lot of one goal games, so the games are super competitive.
51:04
SPEAKER_00: Yeah the week before that we played Bucks, the results didn't go our way, but they were again it was real similar, like a bunch of one goal games.
51:11
SPEAKER_00: I think it was five four one goal games, a tie, and uh, and then one game was a couple goal games, and you just go like if you scored on a free kick or something, you could have drawn, or maybe the game could have gone the other way if you capitalized before they scored.
51:25
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's great.
51:27
SPEAKER_00: And as you were saying, a bunch of uh good coaches and good clubs, and kids are I think are fortunate with so many opportunities.
51:36
SPEAKER_01: How long have you been at Wolves?
51:38
SPEAKER_01: 2007.
51:39
SPEAKER_01: 2007, so you were there during the national title, yeah, right?
51:44
SPEAKER_01: With like, well, who was in that?
51:46
SPEAKER_01: Reed Losi.
51:47
SPEAKER_01: I coached Reed, um, and I coached with Reed.
51:51
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then Jordan Tyler, Nate Hicklin.
51:56
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, coach with his dad on time cave.
51:59
SPEAKER_00: I don't I think he was before that.
52:01
SPEAKER_00: I think SUNY was back coaching with us.
52:03
SPEAKER_01: SUNY's coaching with Wolves?
52:05
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he coaches with us now.
52:06
SPEAKER_01: I'd like to get SUNY on because he's doing something with Hamoodi.
52:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh doing his own they do individual training, yeah.
52:13
SPEAKER_01: Man, how I've never met Lars.
52:17
SPEAKER_01: I've never met Lars, but I always knew of him, you know, and just the boys would always talk to him.
52:25
SPEAKER_01: Because back when ODP really mattered, I was with I coached with Dave Hickland.
52:30
SPEAKER_01: Okay, and so I knew all those boys and I worked with all those boys.
52:34
SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, the wolves difference, and you were talking about periodization earlier.
52:40
SPEAKER_01: Is that more from your A license or is that a wolves thing that you guys have been doing for a long time?
52:45
SPEAKER_00: Uh I think it just depends on who you talk to.
52:47
SPEAKER_00: I think there's some periodization.
52:50
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
52:51
SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and we've always been open to difference of opinions, and the biggest goal is like having touch points later and and trying to talk about have you covered this?
53:03
SPEAKER_00: Like there's an issue in the team, like, especially now the no-heading rule, right?
53:07
SPEAKER_00: People are not good headers of the ball.
53:09
SPEAKER_01: They're scared.
53:10
SPEAKER_01: I think we messed up so bad with that.
53:13
SPEAKER_01: It's okay, instead of banning heading, why didn't we just ban punting and uh really long goal kicks?
53:24
SPEAKER_01: Sure.
53:24
SPEAKER_01: Because now we can't score goals with it.
53:27
SPEAKER_01: Well, punting for sure.
53:28
SPEAKER_01: Punting for sure.
53:29
SPEAKER_01: And then you're killing two birds with one stone.
53:31
SPEAKER_01: Now you're forced to build out of the back and learn how to build out of the back and build.
53:36
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
53:36
SPEAKER_01: It's like just ban punting because that's when the I was the coach back in the day when I would get frustrated if uh if we lost a bunch of punts, I would kick the ball and make the kids head it.
53:49
SPEAKER_01: Remember like doing that kind of crap?
53:52
SPEAKER_01: We'd be thrown in jail.
53:54
SPEAKER_00: It would yeah.
53:56
SPEAKER_00: Shit.
53:57
SPEAKER_00: Well, I I do think I don't think that's fully lost.
54:01
SPEAKER_00: I mean, maybe you're not kicking it 50 yards in the air, right?
54:05
SPEAKER_00: But people have to learn to add the ball.
54:07
SPEAKER_00: So like soft toss is a thing.
54:09
unknown: Yeah.
54:10
SPEAKER_00: Um, and you're you're not alone.
54:13
SPEAKER_00: So uh, yeah, I think that's that's a kind of our age is like our style.
54:18
SPEAKER_01: It's like that's what we were yeah, that's what we had to do.
54:22
SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
54:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that that's the era that we grew up in.
54:26
SPEAKER_00: But yeah, going back to Lars, I think like he does a great job.
54:31
SPEAKER_00: Um you know, I for me, he's just so buttoned up.
54:35
SPEAKER_00: Like, if you ever go watch his training sessions, there's not like a thing that's missing.
54:39
SPEAKER_00: Like his coaching style is excellent, the way he treats people fantastic.
54:44
SPEAKER_00: Um, so you know, he he's one of two other people that have been in the club longer than I have.
54:50
SPEAKER_00: Um, and he is one of like the people that I like I've always looked up to.
54:54
SPEAKER_00: I played for him for a couple years, uh, then came in and was an assistant under like when the academy was just starting.
55:01
SPEAKER_00: Um I didn't help with that national championship team.
55:04
SPEAKER_00: I'd was I'd jump in training sessions back because of 07-08.
55:08
SPEAKER_00: I still thought I could play.
55:09
SPEAKER_01: You were you were only like 23, yeah, something like that, maybe.
55:14
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
55:15
SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, but we like those guys are doing a great job.
55:19
SPEAKER_00: I think all four of our team right now have in in the academy, so 15s and 19s have all qualified for flex.
55:27
SPEAKER_02: Good.
55:27
SPEAKER_00: Um, and we feel like we're you know at the top of the food chain in terms of style of play and getting results and um where is flex this year?
55:37
SPEAKER_01: Is it in Florida?
55:38
SPEAKER_01: Uh I think I or is it Texas?
55:41
SPEAKER_00: You know what?
55:42
SPEAKER_00: Because we're not a part of Flex, I don't know.
55:44
SPEAKER_00: I think Colorado is where the MLS Cup is.
55:47
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
55:48
SPEAKER_00: Flex at uh did you say Texas?
55:52
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe.
55:54
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
55:54
SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm I might be going to GA next week.
55:58
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
55:58
SPEAKER_01: The generation Adidas.
56:00
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
56:00
SPEAKER_01: But uh MLS.
56:02
SPEAKER_01: So I was at uh Fest, this hoodie.
56:06
SPEAKER_01: Um and Luis Roblace uh wanted me to come out there and kind of promote, or not promote, but just talk to people and just so people get a better glimpse of what's happening out there and whatnot.
56:20
SPEAKER_01: And that was were you there?
56:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I didn't get there to the second week.
56:25
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
56:25
SPEAKER_01: Oh, so you were in like a second location sometimes?
56:28
SPEAKER_01: Uh no, we were six teens were were at the big place.
56:31
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, we were all so thirteens and fourteens were somewhere else.
56:36
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
56:36
SPEAKER_00: Fifteens through nineteens, and that we didn't take our thirteens and fourteens this past year.
56:40
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
56:41
SPEAKER_00: Um, I just didn't come in until the second week.
56:43
SPEAKER_00: I think I was there for eight days, um, five days of coaching my own team and then like overseeing and helping with a couple of the other teams.
56:52
unknown: Yeah.
56:52
SPEAKER_00: Facility was awesome.
56:53
SPEAKER_00: That was crazy.
56:54
SPEAKER_00: There's been some news on that facility.
56:56
SPEAKER_01: Well, the the designers or whoever created it embezzled money.
57:01
SPEAKER_01: And did you notice that when you were there, they only took card?
57:05
SPEAKER_01: They didn't take any cash.
57:06
SPEAKER_00: And if you went to the restaurant, if you went anywhere, everything was on card because I guess they had that's how they probably all that was going on, right?
57:14
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
57:15
SPEAKER_00: That's how, yeah.
57:16
SPEAKER_01: Supposedly, yeah, I don't know.
57:17
SPEAKER_01: But they're in jail now, so yeah, didn't work out great.
57:20
SPEAKER_01: But it's still I mean, this that facility is unbelievable.
57:23
SPEAKER_00: Well, you walk in and this is the biggest scoreboard you've ever seen, and every field has like a big scoreboard, like it's a jumping.
57:31
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like a going to a lines game.
57:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's crazy.
57:35
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
57:35
SPEAKER_01: What what do you think is the biggest difference between uh your years of DA and the MLS next?
57:44
SPEAKER_00: Well, the the biggest one is the stronger footprint of like the MLS clubs now and MLS Next versus DA.
57:53
SPEAKER_01: Because they felt removed from the DA.
57:56
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
57:56
SPEAKER_01: And then you would partner in name only, and like, oh, you get our uniforms, and that's about it.
58:02
SPEAKER_01: Well, that was us.
58:02
SPEAKER_00: We were the crew wolves for a long time.
58:06
SPEAKER_00: And the kid, but there was a stretch where their kits were really sweet, and the kids were like, dude, like and even the coach was like, those are pretty sweet.
58:13
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
58:14
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, and that relationship wasn't always bad.
58:18
SPEAKER_00: Like, we'd go down and we'd play friendlies with them, and they'd invite us.
58:22
SPEAKER_00: We'd go to, you know, a crew game, and back then uh Burr Holter was the coach of them.
58:27
SPEAKER_00: And it was great because I know it was like me, Lars.
58:30
SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to remember who else was with us.
58:32
SPEAKER_00: It might have been Skip and Brian Thorpe.
58:36
SPEAKER_00: Are you familiar with those guys?
58:37
SPEAKER_00: Brian.
58:38
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
58:38
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
58:39
SPEAKER_00: Um, but Greg would always come and let's say hi.
58:42
SPEAKER_01: Is Brian still around?
58:44
SPEAKER_00: They were, they've kind of jumped around.
58:46
SPEAKER_00: So they left, had a great opportunity at Continental, which is now back to um Delco.
58:52
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
58:53
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then they I think they were both in Oklahoma City.
58:56
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
58:57
SPEAKER_00: And I ran into skip.
58:58
SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen Brian in a long time.
59:00
SPEAKER_00: Got it.
59:00
SPEAKER_00: And at the end, like when Brian was here, we were we were pretty close.
59:03
SPEAKER_00: So I've kind of lost touch with him, probably need to get back in touch with him.
59:06
SPEAKER_01: I like Brian.
59:06
SPEAKER_01: Um when he was uh the uh the director of the state.
59:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
59:11
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
59:12
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I'm not sure where he is right now.
59:15
SPEAKER_00: Got it.
59:15
SPEAKER_00: Um I'm sure saying funny stuff and coaching kids.
59:20
SPEAKER_00: If he's not coaching, I'd be shocked.
59:22
SPEAKER_00: No, yeah, he's definitely coaching.
59:25
SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm still blown away by uh this.
59:30
SPEAKER_01: I never knew that this was here for Madonna.
59:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
59:33
SPEAKER_01: And I mean, this is legit like this is all athletics, right?
59:38
SPEAKER_01: This entire building is athletic is athletics.
59:40
SPEAKER_01: It looks like it was this an elementary school?
59:43
SPEAKER_00: Uh no.
59:44
SPEAKER_00: Or a high school?
59:45
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, high school.
59:46
SPEAKER_00: High school.
59:47
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
59:48
SPEAKER_00: And then then just this wing, so I think about 10 years ago, we we bought it.
59:54
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
59:55
SPEAKER_00: And again, I'm still learning the history on everything.
59:57
SPEAKER_00: Of course.
59:58
SPEAKER_01: Um and then what are your facilities like outside?
1:00:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so well, there's there's big talks of things in the future of potential partnering with a club, okay, building a dome.
1:00:11
SPEAKER_00: Um, supposedly there's a new turf field that's supposed to come in.
1:00:16
SPEAKER_00: Um that kind of rumors lingered.
1:00:19
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
1:00:19
SPEAKER_00: Uh all this stuff in this building down, like in the gym, it's all pretty much brand new.
1:00:24
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
1:00:24
SPEAKER_00: Um, I'll I'll take you down there.
1:00:26
SPEAKER_00: We'll peek at it before you get out of here.
1:00:28
SPEAKER_00: Sweet.
1:00:28
SPEAKER_00: But it's yeah, it's it's really nice.
1:00:30
SPEAKER_00: And then um I'm trying to think, right around COVID, Madonna had created a football team.
1:00:38
SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think in general, football.
1:00:41
SPEAKER_01: How many other NAI schools have it?
1:00:45
SPEAKER_00: Couldn't even answer.
1:00:46
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
1:00:47
SPEAKER_00: Wow.
1:00:48
SPEAKER_00: It's still one of these like learning.
1:00:50
SPEAKER_01: I kind of like that though.
1:00:51
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's I think it's fun.
1:00:52
SPEAKER_00: Like, I know Lawrence Tech has a football team.
1:00:54
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
1:00:55
SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think more and more are popping up.
1:00:57
SPEAKER_00: And again, I think schools like Madonna, we are I think 65-70% athletics in terms of enrollment.
1:01:04
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
1:01:04
SPEAKER_00: So athletics is a big part of like the people that come here.
1:01:09
SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think when you can drive more enrollment and things like that, athletic directors, presidents, they wanna they want to do that.
1:01:19
SPEAKER_01: I think do you think I think most NAIA schools are athletic dominant.
1:01:25
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:01:26
SPEAKER_01: Right.
1:01:26
SPEAKER_01: And I think that's why kind of was the undoing of Sienna Heights is when it was 90%.
1:01:32
SPEAKER_00: Right.
1:01:32
SPEAKER_00: That's what I was gonna say.
1:01:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were I think they were over 90%.
1:01:36
SPEAKER_00: And then I was just talking to Skip last night.
1:01:38
SPEAKER_00: He was talking about they had recently invested in new sports facilities and spent money on buildings, and it's like a seven to ten million dollar venture, and then you know, not long after that they're going, shoot.
1:01:51
SPEAKER_00: Did you know Scooter at all?
1:01:52
SPEAKER_00: Not really.
1:01:53
SPEAKER_01: He's coaching with a club out there now.
1:01:56
SPEAKER_01: I think he's with either the Tigers or Tigers.
1:01:59
SPEAKER_01: Is it Tigers?
1:02:00
SPEAKER_01: Good.
1:02:01
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I again I've had some of my best friends growing up played for him.
1:02:07
SPEAKER_01: And who's the biggest hitter in your conference right now?
1:02:13
SPEAKER_01: Is it you guys or is it is it uh LTI or no for on the women's side, Ohio Northwestern.
1:02:20
SPEAKER_00: Ohio Northwestern?
1:02:21
SPEAKER_00: Quite a bit of uh or Uno is kind of what everyone calls them.
1:02:26
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
1:02:26
SPEAKER_00: Um a lot of international kids.
1:02:29
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I've watched, I've gone back and watched the game with them.
1:02:32
SPEAKER_00: Like really technical.
1:02:34
SPEAKER_00: Uh Aquinas has been really good for the last handful of years.
1:02:38
SPEAKER_00: Uh there was a stretch where the the team here at Madonna was really good, and I think we've dropped a little bit.
1:02:43
SPEAKER_00: Not that we're at the bottom, we've always kind of been in the middle.
1:02:46
SPEAKER_00: I think last year we finished fourth.
1:02:48
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
1:02:49
SPEAKER_00: Um, but then like us in Sienna Heights were kind of right in the middle, and then Lourdes had jumped to the forefront this past year.
1:02:56
SPEAKER_00: They had a really good year, but if you're familiar, they just lost their program.
1:03:00
SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, Sienna Heights and Lords, and no one even had an idea about Lourdes, but similar deal, like 90% uh of enrollment were all athletics.
1:03:14
SPEAKER_00: And I know our uh was it president sent an email, I think, the next day to kind of confirm like we're in a good spot.
1:03:23
SPEAKER_00: And um I think there were some concerns like back around COVID.
1:03:28
SPEAKER_00: So a couple things with like NAIA programs as we were talking about.
1:03:32
SPEAKER_00: One, uh Whitmer creating that rule where if you're in you know Wayne County or Oakland County, wherever your you know junior college falls, if you're in that district, it costs you nothing.
1:03:44
SPEAKER_00: On top of COVID, where enrollment dropped because people weren't going, and then obviously school, they're like people weren't online, yeah.
1:03:51
SPEAKER_00: Right.
1:03:52
SPEAKER_00: Um, so those things affected a lot of the NAIAs, and I think you know, economy had done better and until real recent, in regards to like apparently bombing people is great.
1:04:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'm not for that ever.
1:04:06
SPEAKER_00: Um, but before that I thought we were like moving in the right direction.
1:04:10
SPEAKER_00: Hopefully we can get back to peace and sovereignty and things like that, you know.
1:04:15
SPEAKER_01: I mean, so you guys are healthy air quotes in terms of like just think so from what I know from the athletic district.
1:04:25
SPEAKER_01: It's gotta be scary for them, you know.
1:04:27
SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be I was only here for not even a month, and I had people teasing me like, well, good good thing you were hired because you're you know, you're gonna be out of a gig, but I I don't think that's that's true, and I think we're in a good spot.
1:04:40
SPEAKER_01: I don't either because again, also the location.
1:04:43
SPEAKER_01: I think the location matters.
1:04:45
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:04:46
SPEAKER_01: You know, there's so many people in this area, and there's so many so much soccer, obviously.
1:04:52
SPEAKER_00: Well, we have a great nursing program, so for people that want to get into nursing, it's a big deal.
1:04:56
SPEAKER_00: It's a big part of the um, you know, our our women's soccer program.
1:05:01
SPEAKER_00: I want to say at least a third of our kids are all nursing.
1:05:04
SPEAKER_01: Because a lot of you a lot of nurses can't play uh a sport and go to nursing because once that hits.
1:05:11
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's clinicals.
1:05:13
SPEAKER_01: Clinicals.
1:05:13
SPEAKER_00: Clinicals.
1:05:14
SPEAKER_00: Well, as I was saying earlier, like there's been people that have missed, and it's not because they're like, I don't like soccer or whatever, they're doing nursing clinicals.
1:05:21
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
1:05:22
SPEAKER_00: And I'm again, I'm not upset with those people.
1:05:24
SPEAKER_00: I think we have to figure out how it all works.
1:05:27
SPEAKER_01: I have a girl that I trained at um and she plays at Niagara University, and they're she's in the nursing program, and they had to basically say, Okay, Mondays, you are not here, you're not gonna be at training because she's at clinicals or whatever her her major um you know dictated.
1:05:47
SPEAKER_01: Yep, and that's just so hard.
1:05:49
SPEAKER_01: Teaching's another one.
1:05:50
SPEAKER_01: Teaching's a hard one to do as a student athlete, too.
1:05:53
SPEAKER_00: So you get into your senior year, yeah, yeah.
1:05:55
SPEAKER_00: You're out on the field, you're teaching classes, exactly.
1:05:59
unknown: What's
1:06:00
SPEAKER_01: Schedule like this week?
1:06:01
SPEAKER_01: Do you have training tonight?
1:06:03
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
1:06:03
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
1:06:04
SPEAKER_00: We're uh six to seven thirty uh tonight, and then Wednesday we train seven to eight thirty a.m.
1:06:10
SPEAKER_00: and then Fridays we are 10 to 11:30 uh a.m.
1:06:15
SPEAKER_01: And in those 12 weeks, there's no hour uh restriction, it's not like uh eight hours and then twenty hours and whatnot.
1:06:24
SPEAKER_00: Just weeks.
1:06:25
SPEAKER_01: And then when do you guys like show up in August?
1:06:27
SPEAKER_01: When are you having everybody show up?
1:06:29
SPEAKER_00: Or July?
1:06:30
SPEAKER_00: I don't remember the exact dates.
1:06:32
SPEAKER_00: I I think it's that it'll be I think it's August 23rd.
1:06:38
SPEAKER_00: I think that's the Monday.
1:06:39
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
1:06:40
SPEAKER_00: So for the kids that aren't commuters, they move into the dorms that day.
1:06:44
SPEAKER_00: We'll probably have maybe a team meeting that night.
1:06:47
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then things will start the following day.
1:06:49
SPEAKER_00: So whatever that Monday.
1:06:50
SPEAKER_00: I think it's August 3rd, but maybe it's the fourth.
1:06:53
SPEAKER_00: So move in on Monday, start training on that Tuesday.
1:06:57
SPEAKER_00: Uh still kind of formulating what that is.
1:06:59
SPEAKER_00: I think for me, I just remember what it was like training early and then training at night or whatever, and being a mess by day three, like my hamstrings and quads, and I'm like, this is awful.
1:07:10
SPEAKER_00: So trying to find a balance, and I think two contact points will happen, but probably one physically hard training session and then team activity or something light, you know.
1:07:24
SPEAKER_01: Um are you already planning your periodization for Madonna uh in the fall?
1:07:30
SPEAKER_00: I'm not quite there yet.
1:07:31
SPEAKER_00: No, there's too much stuff to do for my A license right now.
1:07:34
SPEAKER_00: Like my periodization for my teams right now is half a mess, except for the four teens, because uh it's this big push of we have like a game plan, you have to finish your periodization, you have to um submit multiple levels of assignments.
1:07:51
SPEAKER_00: Uh we have to create a game plan.
1:07:53
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
1:07:54
SPEAKER_00: And in the game plan, it's essentially just either your club's model or your model for how you want the game to be played played.
1:08:02
SPEAKER_00: And then you've got to like provide all the information.
1:08:06
SPEAKER_00: So in ours, some of like we have some of it, like Lars has one and he shared it with me, and there's another guy in our club, Sean Gray, going through the A license.
1:08:15
SPEAKER_00: That's been great.
1:08:16
SPEAKER_00: Like a couple people I can lean on.
1:08:17
SPEAKER_00: Plus, my educator, Neil Ellis, has been great.
1:08:20
SPEAKER_00: Um makes himself available if you need stuff.
1:08:25
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, it's just a lot of busy work, it's not overbearing or things that you can't do, but you know, you you go into like a principle of of attack of uh exploiting space behind, then you got to get into your sub principles and then the definitions of those.
1:08:41
SPEAKER_00: So um some of it is one word, some of it is a full, you know, sentence trying to describe the seven and eleven running across the line or pulling away or timing of the run, weight of the pass, angle of the pass, getting into like the real sp uh speci specificity, if that's right.
1:09:00
SPEAKER_00: Special yeah, whatever.
1:09:03
SPEAKER_00: Um just of the information, right?
1:09:06
SPEAKER_00: Which is why like I think it's great.
1:09:08
SPEAKER_00: Um, and I I don't think for as long as I've been involved in soccer, I haven't dove in like that deep into like just critical thinking of every little detail.
1:09:18
SPEAKER_00: So I think some of those things are great.
1:09:21
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but it gets tedious, and there's days where I go, like, like you mind doing soccer's stupid.
1:09:27
SPEAKER_00: You know, that's that's yeah, that's a demir, by the way.
1:09:31
SPEAKER_00: Like years ago, like you dominate the game 20 chances to two, you lose two to one.
1:09:37
SPEAKER_00: Just like Scott, soccer's stupid.
1:09:40
SPEAKER_01: It is, yeah.
1:09:41
SPEAKER_01: You know, I love Demir, but uh like you okay, everybody that's in your A license, you're in the okay, what are they called?
1:09:52
SPEAKER_01: Is it is it the pro pathway and then youth youth pathway and you're you're in the pro pathway.
1:10:00
SPEAKER_01: I mean, how Nick Darren finished his A once and uh when I was coaching at University of Detroit, he's like, I just got my A.
1:10:12
SPEAKER_01: I am not a better coach.
1:10:14
SPEAKER_01: It's like, but I feel like since they've that was back when it was nine days, yeah, you're in, you're out.
1:10:19
SPEAKER_01: Full grind.
1:10:20
SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
1:10:20
SPEAKER_01: Now it's now it's like tea now.
1:10:23
SPEAKER_01: It's like a full year is like student teaching where you go, you you implement what you've learned, and you're doing the periodization and all these assignments, and then you go back to Kansas City and you get I mean, when you were saying okay, you train, you run your session with the peers, with the other guys in the license, and then you go and fix it, and then you go and run it again with the kids.
1:10:50
SPEAKER_01: Which one's graded?
1:10:52
SPEAKER_01: Or is uh not really graded like it used to be?
1:10:55
SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's graded like it used to be because you have to submit three other training sessions in your environment that you video, and then inside those videos, right, all your stoppages and all the details in your training sessions that like that's the stuff they look at.
1:11:12
SPEAKER_00: So if you come in and you can't identify with the kids and your coaching points are way off, that's probably not gonna go well for you because the same thing is gonna happen in your environment.
1:11:25
SPEAKER_00: But I think you're really more graded on like this next one, like for the game plan.
1:11:32
SPEAKER_00: Um so there's three different game plans that you have to do.
1:11:35
SPEAKER_00: You have to game plan based on who your opponent is, and then you have to let the kids know, like they these are the players we want to account for because they play three at the back.
1:11:44
SPEAKER_00: We want to, you know, try to play into our front three.
1:11:48
SPEAKER_00: Um, off of that, can they combine to get in be in in behind, or can they lay a ball off?
1:11:54
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then you have to plan a training session based on your game plan, and then you have to tie it all together, and then from there, then you go back and you reflect.
1:12:06
SPEAKER_00: You give data analysis on when the ball went into the front three, did they combine together or did they get a ball back in the midfield, or did they lose a ball?
1:12:15
SPEAKER_00: And then you try to quantify that and then describe what you think it means based on the data and the performance and the outcome.
1:12:22
SPEAKER_00: And um, so it's just a lot of like everything you do, reflect.
1:12:26
SPEAKER_00: Then you do something else, reflect, then you do something else, reflect.
1:12:30
SPEAKER_00: And the idea is that this session wasn't great, but the next time you ran it, it was better, and then you ran it again and it got really good.
1:12:37
SPEAKER_00: And then I think I started a while ago talking about like intentional behaviors.
1:12:42
SPEAKER_00: Now, like you're really fine-tuning intentional behaviors of players, and may it's simple stuff like opening your hips, scanning without the ball, um, you know, uh weighted passes, angle to passes.
1:12:54
SPEAKER_00: Um and certainly you talk about defensive organization too.
1:12:58
SPEAKER_00: So, like cues, are you like head down versus head up?
1:13:02
SPEAKER_00: Like, what does that mean?
1:13:03
SPEAKER_00: Is it a bigger pass?
1:13:04
SPEAKER_00: Is there time on the ball?
1:13:05
SPEAKER_00: Is there not time on the ball?
1:13:07
SPEAKER_00: Um, and and a huge part of the course has really been about the cues.
1:13:12
SPEAKER_00: Like, and they go, Well, what's a cue?
1:13:14
SPEAKER_00: Well, it it's a nonverbal cue.
1:13:16
SPEAKER_00: No one said anything.
1:13:18
SPEAKER_00: You're receiving information based on the player's body shape, where they're looking, um like is the ball traveling, or is it at their foot, right?
1:13:26
SPEAKER_00: Is there head down?
1:13:27
SPEAKER_00: So just taking in all the information and the games as you know is always giving you information.
1:13:33
SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
1:13:33
SPEAKER_00: Are you paying attention?
1:13:35
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, as a goalkeeper, we're always we've always been taught on visual cues of like, okay, head down, uh be ready.
1:13:42
SPEAKER_01: Shot's coming.
1:13:43
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
1:13:43
SPEAKER_01: How okay, when you're doing the game plan, or not the game plan, not the game model, but okay, the session that planning a training planning for the game, right?
1:13:58
SPEAKER_01: Is it mostly pattern play, or are you working on the defense and being like, okay, this is what they do.
1:14:04
SPEAKER_01: I want you to do these actions, and you're acting like a scout team, basically.
1:14:11
SPEAKER_00: I I think it's different.
1:14:13
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
1:14:13
SPEAKER_00: And what I what I mean by that is like you might do it one way, and I would do it another, and Zathy would do it a different way.
1:14:20
SPEAKER_00: Right.
1:14:21
SPEAKER_00: So I think it's different based on who you ask and who right and who you are, and like principles and stuff.
1:14:26
SPEAKER_00: For me, we're not gonna change our tactics based on what they do.
1:14:31
SPEAKER_00: We're just gonna try to understand their behavior.
1:14:35
SPEAKER_01: So when this happens, how can we exploit a weakness?
1:14:38
SPEAKER_01: How can uh we have to uh take into mind what they're very good at or they can hurt us?
1:14:44
SPEAKER_01: Right.
1:14:45
SPEAKER_01: Can we exploit them?
1:14:45
SPEAKER_01: And that's all soccer.
1:14:47
SPEAKER_00: We spend a week or two talking about it and then we don't execute, and I go, Well, this is great.
1:14:53
SPEAKER_00: Coaching soccer is the best.
1:14:56
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:14:57
SPEAKER_01: I mean now, would you get great Okay?
1:15:01
SPEAKER_01: Let's say you came out at your A license and you're running a session where it's just Pattern Boy and there's no defenders.
1:15:06
SPEAKER_01: Are you gonna get graded down, or is it well this session's awful and whatnot?
1:15:10
SPEAKER_01: Or um or did they not really give you that?
1:15:14
SPEAKER_00: They're not gonna ding you on that.
1:15:15
SPEAKER_00: They give you that freedom.
1:15:16
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the the thing that has been best about this, I felt in other courses my my D, my C, and my B license, like really they probably would frown upon pattern play.
1:15:27
SPEAKER_00: And it's crazy because they go, Well, like I do pattern play.
1:15:30
SPEAKER_00: I go, Well, then I don't understand what's the problem.
1:15:32
SPEAKER_00: Um with them, and it's not even just a progressive session.
1:15:37
SPEAKER_00: The the one session I ran in Kansas City was actually a regressive session.
1:15:41
SPEAKER_00: So I joked with my educator.
1:15:44
SPEAKER_00: I go, Well, I've come to Kansas City, I've run a training session that I've never ran before with a bunch of kids I don't know, and I've never done a regressive session.
1:15:52
SPEAKER_00: So there's that.
1:15:53
SPEAKER_00: How'd it go?
1:15:54
SPEAKER_00: You know, and him and I just start laughing, and it was good, but the session started seven versus six, then it went five versus four, and the very last one was just three versus three, and the topic was like denying penetration um defensively, and the group of players we're working with were the four or five center backs and the goalkeeper.
1:16:15
SPEAKER_00: Okay, and so like it starts big, and now you're talking about the goalkeeper like being connected to the back line, like when the ball's farther away and there's pressure, you can be higher.
1:16:24
SPEAKER_00: If there's no pressure, you gotta obviously worry about a shot from distance or like a lofted ball.
1:16:30
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then it was just all backwards, like at the very end.
1:16:34
SPEAKER_00: Is that a thing?
1:16:36
SPEAKER_00: Is that like not for me?
1:16:39
SPEAKER_00: It's not for me, but it was that day.
1:16:41
SPEAKER_01: You always thought about adding numbers, right?
1:16:44
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I like progressive because you think like the way that I ended, we were talking about like defending on the inside shoulder, being in a passing lane or blocking the goal, block a shot, force him away from goal.
1:16:58
SPEAKER_00: So, like those were some of the things that I was saying at the end, like block the shot, get hit with it.
1:17:03
SPEAKER_00: Again, defend on the inside shoulder trying to force him away, because it was I think it was like 30 yards long, full size goal, full size goal, high intensity, and that was the other thing.
1:17:14
SPEAKER_00: It was uh a threshold day, which is like 70 percent.
1:17:18
SPEAKER_00: So it's just like go, go, go, and that's how you have to coach and push kids.
1:17:25
SPEAKER_00: Um, and and I got mostly good feedback, but there there were things in the session that didn't go as planned, and right.
1:17:33
SPEAKER_00: Um that's but that's crazy, but well, and and again, I'm it's not like Scott's on an island.
1:17:38
SPEAKER_00: I I was with three three guys that I'm in the course with that we've been in a group the whole time.
1:17:43
SPEAKER_00: So one guy's like on the clock going time, and there's two other guys, and we shared the session because we hadn't been the head coach yet.
1:17:52
SPEAKER_00: So he ran the seven versus six, I ran the five versus four and the three v three, and then we actually had simultaneous exercises going to small goals and big goals at the end.
1:18:03
SPEAKER_00: So Rob and Tanner were doing one thing, and uh me and Alfonso were were doing the big goal thing, and um in the end it was good.
1:18:12
SPEAKER_00: Like, and by the way, a great group of guys, those guys are awesome.
1:18:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the best thing about those you know, licensing courses and everything is just the relationships you develop.
1:18:22
SPEAKER_01: When you took your B or like so my B and my C was before the change, right?
1:18:30
SPEAKER_01: So I had two.
1:18:32
SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
1:18:34
SPEAKER_01: So you were near the nine days, yeah, and then and then you waited to do your A.
1:18:39
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I went to uh um I was in Pennsylvania for my B.
1:18:43
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
1:18:44
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think seven, eight, nine days, whatever that was.
1:18:46
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
1:18:47
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then I was at the Home Depot Center for my C, and that was forever ago.
1:18:51
SPEAKER_00: But I like you know, I have a seven-year-old and a nine-year-old, and my wife would have it would have been over for me if if I was doing my A prior to that, but now they're self-sufficient, you know, they still need a lot of help with things.
1:19:05
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:19:05
SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, I think it was just time and then where I'm at inside the club and things, I think having my A just again doesn't make you a better coach, just makes you look like somebody who's trying to get better and improve.
1:19:18
SPEAKER_01: And of course, um, you know, I do MLS have standards in terms of if you want to be homegrown versus like AD, because I know ECNL, or no, the DA had that.
1:19:29
SPEAKER_01: I don't know if the ECNL has anything like that.
1:19:32
SPEAKER_00: Uh sure.
1:19:33
SPEAKER_00: I I know the homegrown does, like, I'm pretty sure you have to have your A to be like a director.
1:19:40
SPEAKER_00: I think they want everyone to have a B.
1:19:42
SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't be surprised if they push everybody.
1:19:44
SPEAKER_00: Like you could get grandfathered in, right?
1:19:46
SPEAKER_00: Like you hire someone who does a really good job, and they're gonna say, get them their C, get them their B.
1:19:53
SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
1:19:53
SPEAKER_00: Just progress.
1:19:55
SPEAKER_00: I don't think anybody's trying to jam you up.
1:19:57
SPEAKER_00: And of course, by the way, you could always say, like, Lars, you're the coach, but the coach is really Jimmy.
1:20:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh that's a made-up name.
1:20:05
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:20:05
SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
1:20:06
SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, he works with the group, and you just, you know, there's always ways around that.
1:20:12
SPEAKER_00: We we don't really tend to do that, like, because most of I'm trying to think, like with our homegrown guys, Granite has his A, Lars has his A.
1:20:21
SPEAKER_00: Uh Sean and I are both doing our A's right now.
1:20:26
SPEAKER_00: Um, Ash Warmal, I think he has his B.
1:20:31
SPEAKER_01: I actually don't know what Ash has, but have you talked to anybody about how they are auditing A's now?
1:20:38
SPEAKER_01: I wonder how that process works.
1:20:40
SPEAKER_00: Well, and they did they did say, like currently there's nothing set to renew uh in any capacity.
1:20:49
SPEAKER_00: I do expect it to change.
1:20:51
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:20:52
SPEAKER_00: You know, and uh that always makes me nervous.
1:20:54
SPEAKER_00: Like I I wasn't good at school, still don't love the classroom setting.
1:20:59
SPEAKER_00: Same.
1:21:00
SPEAKER_00: Get me on the field where we can be people in ourselves.
1:21:03
SPEAKER_00: That's right.
1:21:04
SPEAKER_00: That's the environment that I prefer.
1:21:06
SPEAKER_01: What's next for the uh what do you got coming up?
1:21:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just um resubmitting some assignments that I got some feedback on, and then 426, like I said, I think I have um have to reformulate like the game model.
1:21:22
SPEAKER_00: So the game model has to come to like a conclusion.
1:21:26
SPEAKER_00: Um in that game model, you have to compare and contrast like where you were to where you are, so you gotta cut film from games two, three, four, whatever, to games, you know, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, um, which is always tricky, right?
1:21:41
SPEAKER_00: You can always find an error in anything.
1:21:44
SPEAKER_00: So you're just cutting video and then kind of comparing and contrasting.
1:21:48
SPEAKER_00: Um, same thing uh with with every topic.
1:21:52
SPEAKER_00: So if you're doing build-out, building out of the back, um, in terms of an attacking principle, creating shape upon winning the ball, or it could be pressing or compactness, you just have to show those, and then um for the game model, they it's not a mandatory thing.
1:22:09
SPEAKER_00: But if you ask me, it's it really has to go in there.
1:22:12
SPEAKER_00: You want to show them pictures and video evidence of success versus maybe not success early in the season.
1:22:20
SPEAKER_02: Got it.
1:22:21
SPEAKER_00: And then for me, like I use the like we change a point of attack seven and ten times.
1:22:26
SPEAKER_00: I think this past weekend it's been a big emphasis.
1:22:29
SPEAKER_00: I would tell you, we probably doubled that um with our fourteens.
1:22:32
SPEAKER_00: Like my U-14s, I thought like the last three games were two and one in those games.
1:22:38
SPEAKER_00: Um, but really played good football, created a bunch of chances, a lot of possession, change play, shared the ball.
1:22:45
SPEAKER_00: Not what we always are.
1:22:46
SPEAKER_00: So um you're always chasing the scoreboards.
1:22:50
SPEAKER_00: The the game isn't always fun to coach because you're like, you know how it goes.
1:22:54
SPEAKER_00: You don't always score.
1:22:56
SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, so there's that, and then there's another game plan.
1:23:01
SPEAKER_00: So you gotta come up with another game plan, plan another training session, and then all that stuff is submitted by 426.
1:23:11
SPEAKER_00: Then, if they think you've done a good enough job, then you have to create a like a summative, and you've got to create where you were to where you are, uh, and present that to your educator um in like uh end of the year evaluation uh interview.
1:23:31
SPEAKER_00: Right, and then if that goes well, then you pass.
1:23:34
SPEAKER_00: And in any of these stages, if they go like you're just not ready, they push it off, I think six months, then you do something similar, um, and then you go from there.
1:23:45
SPEAKER_00: And then if they decide you're not not ready, you could potentially have I don't know if it's the whole course or come back for one of the in-persons.
1:23:53
SPEAKER_00: It's in some of the documents I have.
1:23:54
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
1:23:55
SPEAKER_01: But it's not just like pass fail.
1:23:56
SPEAKER_01: I mean, like, oh yeah, you didn't show us in nine days what you are.
1:24:00
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not like that.
1:24:01
SPEAKER_00: It's how it used to be.
1:24:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:24:03
SPEAKER_01: Wow.
1:24:04
SPEAKER_01: Does d are you finding yourself filming more sessions just because you want to watch more sessions at all?
1:24:12
SPEAKER_00: Uh not entirely.
1:24:13
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:24:14
SPEAKER_00: Um in the immediate time, well, there's two things that happen.
1:24:18
SPEAKER_00: One, I didn't think I'd have this job.
1:24:20
SPEAKER_00: And two, yeah, um, when I applied for the A license, I didn't have this job.
1:24:24
SPEAKER_00: So I like I I've been doing, I've been working a lot, and it's been good.
1:24:30
SPEAKER_00: Um, but like I'm just stretched, so I haven't like viewed more than what I really need to, just because like I'm a little bit split in all these different areas.
1:24:39
SPEAKER_00: Got it.
1:24:40
SPEAKER_00: Um, but I think in the in the future, there's certainly more opportunities.
1:24:44
SPEAKER_00: And I think at Madonna, we we try that more often than not, especially in the spring, because you only get so many games.
1:24:50
SPEAKER_00: Right.
1:24:51
SPEAKER_00: So you film some of your training sessions and top of like you're playing, because you want game film, you want player behavior to share with the girls to say, like, you know, if you run forward when we change a point of attack, if she looks up, like that's your cue, that's your trigger, like to release as the wide back to provide support, or there's time on the ball.
1:25:10
SPEAKER_00: Can you run behind?
1:25:11
SPEAKER_00: You know, finding a balance again, a possession versus like playing dangerous passes and things.
1:25:18
SPEAKER_01: We'll start to like wrap this up, but you said IDP.
1:25:21
SPEAKER_01: You're doing one IDP just for one player, or are you doing IDPs for every single player?
1:25:26
SPEAKER_00: Well, we do IDPs for everybody, but one in particular I had to document and share, like create a plan for him.
1:25:34
SPEAKER_00: Um, it's interesting.
1:25:35
SPEAKER_00: The player in particular has now moved from the 2012s to the 2010s.
1:25:40
SPEAKER_00: Um, big, strong, athletically dominant player.
1:25:45
SPEAKER_00: 80 to 80.
1:25:47
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
1:25:47
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
1:25:47
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
1:25:48
SPEAKER_00: And he's certainly in talks to, you know, potentially get a promotion.
1:25:52
SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, there's other things that affect his play.
1:25:56
SPEAKER_00: Um attitude, um, desire.
1:26:01
SPEAKER_00: Uh these are all things that I say to him.
1:26:04
SPEAKER_00: So if something like this pops up and he sees it, I go, I I don't know, I said this to your face.
1:26:07
SPEAKER_00: I said this to your face.
1:26:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:26:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:26:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:26:09
SPEAKER_00: So like when he's like really into it, you go, whoa, like legit.
1:26:15
SPEAKER_00: And I I I say this to Sean, who when I'm doing my A license with, but also um he coaches a homegrown team of my age group.
1:26:24
SPEAKER_00: I just go, like, you get a motivated, proper effort from this kid.
1:26:27
SPEAKER_00: Like, I I don't think there's a more talented kid in the homegrown level.
1:26:30
SPEAKER_00: Like, he's got it all.
1:26:31
SPEAKER_00: Right foot, left foot, skillful, big, strong, like, it's all there.
1:26:36
SPEAKER_00: Just you know, maturation, effort, concentration, being ready, consistency.
1:26:42
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, young players and consistency.
1:26:45
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
1:26:45
SPEAKER_00: Did you eat breakfast?
1:26:46
SPEAKER_00: Did you eat lunch?
1:26:48
SPEAKER_00: Depending on how old you are, boyfriend, girlfriend, girls, boys, like whatever it is, like all that stuff impacts him, you know.
1:26:55
SPEAKER_01: Like for sure.
1:26:57
SPEAKER_00: Mom yelled at him before practice because he didn't clean his room.
1:27:00
SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, I mean, I wouldn't care.
1:27:01
SPEAKER_00: I'd be like, so what?
1:27:02
SPEAKER_00: My room's always dirty, but maybe maybe you don't like that, you know.
1:27:06
SPEAKER_01: Uh okay, so your academy division is going school year.
1:27:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:27:13
SPEAKER_01: And then homegrown is staying the same.
1:27:16
SPEAKER_01: Have you guys talked about that at all?
1:27:18
SPEAKER_00: Like entirely too much.
1:27:20
SPEAKER_00: Uh like I hate it.
1:27:23
SPEAKER_00: I hate it.
1:27:24
SPEAKER_00: Um, hate that you're changing, hate that both are different, both that they're different.
1:27:30
SPEAKER_00: If if one, I don't love the change because I go, like, we just changed.
1:27:34
SPEAKER_00: Like we just changed.
1:27:36
SPEAKER_00: And and I haven't even seen like we haven't even reaped the benefits of change of the first change.
1:27:43
SPEAKER_00: Right.
1:27:43
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you don't know if it was a good change or not.
1:27:46
SPEAKER_00: Like you're just at the cusp of it.
1:27:48
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but it really gets messy.
1:27:50
SPEAKER_00: And for us, the the thing is, anyway, we're first year on the on the wolf side, right?
1:27:54
SPEAKER_00: First year girls program.
1:27:57
SPEAKER_00: So we have a bunch of new teams and everything.
1:28:00
SPEAKER_00: Everyone's like looking at us and go like just because the rules have changed, no one's told us we have to change.
1:28:05
SPEAKER_00: We can keep our teams the same.
1:28:07
SPEAKER_00: Um, and we can do that across the board for the boys' teams too.
1:28:10
SPEAKER_00: So I think with our top level teams being birthier, homegrown, every player that we think is in the right place right now is just gonna stay in their age group.
1:28:24
SPEAKER_00: If we think we have, and sometimes this makes sense, like you have some little guys that are great with the ball, but physically they're losing some physical battles and they have late birth years, we might transition them down.
1:28:36
SPEAKER_00: Um but in general we're trying to keep people in their birth year as much as we can because that's the end goal.
1:28:43
SPEAKER_00: And whether or not you move from 80 to to homegrown, I think last year we had seven kids do that.
1:28:49
SPEAKER_00: Um but we also had I think eight kids go from our homegrown club to like Cincinnati, Philly Union.
1:28:57
SPEAKER_00: So like there's consistency in there.
1:29:00
SPEAKER_00: I don't know the number, I should of how many kids we had go from NAL to A D.
1:29:06
SPEAKER_00: So but consistently we keep making progress and pushing players on.
1:29:10
SPEAKER_00: And I think um we were talking before we you know got on the air, it was just about like relationships with other clubs and pushing players forward.
1:29:18
SPEAKER_00: I mean, we we think we're a place that our number one goal is to create players.
1:29:24
SPEAKER_00: Um we want to have great teams, but if we can create good players that can have set success as you know, a college player, hopefully a pro, then we've really done a good job.
1:29:35
SPEAKER_00: And if we haven't, then what what do we have to do differently?
1:29:39
SPEAKER_00: Right?
1:29:40
SPEAKER_00: So is it positional training, functional, whatever you want to call it?
1:29:43
SPEAKER_00: You know, the homegrown teams train four days a week, we train three days a week.
1:29:48
SPEAKER_00: Like, what's the difference and what's the stop gap?
1:29:50
SPEAKER_00: A lot of AD kids play basketball and track, and sometimes I think those like cross sports kids can really make some good development because they they're using their body in basketball or hockey or whatever the sport is, right?
1:30:06
SPEAKER_00: So development comes in in different pathways, but yeah, just the birth year stuff, the biggest emphasis is when people are where they they fit, we're gonna keep them right where they are.
1:30:16
SPEAKER_00: Um, so the goal is to not disrupt all these different teams and things.
1:30:21
SPEAKER_00: Um but you know, we expect to be some changes.
1:30:24
SPEAKER_00: The the biggest thing that is unknown for us is the the interest from outside.
1:30:29
SPEAKER_00: So you have players that come in and guest train, or or that you know, the worst is the ones that never do that, and they show up on tryout day, and you're like, ah, like you look like I haven't seen this kid ever, and I don't know you from yeah, yeah.
1:30:44
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I always tell people the best thing that you could do is if you're thinking about exploring, do it early.
1:30:52
SPEAKER_00: Um, because I say this too to the to the families like this isn't just a tryout for for like you, it's a tryout for me.
1:30:59
SPEAKER_00: Like, do you like me?
1:31:00
SPEAKER_00: Do you not like me?
1:31:01
SPEAKER_00: Was the session good?
1:31:02
SPEAKER_00: Did it push your kid?
1:31:03
SPEAKER_00: Were the kids jerks?
1:31:05
SPEAKER_01: You know, like that environment is a huge deal in terms of see the environment, it's more natural because trials are not natural, that's not your natural environment ever.
1:31:16
SPEAKER_01: So you gotta see what the natural environment looks like, yeah, or the actual environment.
1:31:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:31:21
SPEAKER_00: So, and I do the same thing at Madonna, like that's one of the best things about NAIA is that kids can come in and train with us.
1:31:28
SPEAKER_00: I go, There's no better way for you to find out if you like our environment than how I will treat you in a training session or how I will treat her in front of you when like I'm the one on um you know, I'm on trial.
1:31:41
SPEAKER_00: Right.
1:31:42
SPEAKER_00: Do you like the girls?
1:31:43
SPEAKER_00: Were they nice to you?
1:31:44
SPEAKER_00: Like all the things I just said, right?
1:31:45
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like those things are really important, and then you see the facilities and the campus, and then you know, you meet the support staff and things like that.
1:31:53
SPEAKER_00: I mean, that that's when you know you're comfortable or you're not.
1:31:55
SPEAKER_00: And if I've done a great job, then you're gonna consider us whether or not we're a school at 2,000 or we're a school at 5,000.
1:32:02
SPEAKER_00: Right.
1:32:03
SPEAKER_01: So man, thank you so much.
1:32:08
SPEAKER_01: It's a great conversation.
1:32:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was good.
1:32:10
SPEAKER_01: What are you one more thing?
1:32:13
SPEAKER_01: Uh with your 16s and dealing with the college recruitment process, like, how much of a mess is that right now on the boys' side?
1:32:24
SPEAKER_01: It's just how hard and really just educating, like, you're at this level, you're not at that level.
1:32:31
SPEAKER_00: Like, let's be realistic here.
1:32:34
SPEAKER_00: So years ago we thought, and I'll be more specific with the 16s in a second, but years ago we thought we had like a couple uh maybe division one guys like lingering, but now with our homegrown kids, like we only get up like five or six that even go division one.
1:32:50
SPEAKER_00: Right.
1:32:50
SPEAKER_00: And a lot of them are going division two and three and NAIA.
1:32:54
SPEAKER_00: Um some have now started taking gap years.
1:32:58
SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's that's a possibility for the AD kids also.
1:33:02
SPEAKER_00: Um, and again, I think it just depends on the players' situation.
1:33:06
SPEAKER_00: Some some of the kids like they want to play, but they really want to get their degree education and you know comes first.
1:33:11
SPEAKER_00: Hey, absolutely.
1:33:12
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, do that, yeah, do that.
1:33:14
SPEAKER_00: Um, but again, like go to school craft if you want, like exactly Rick's had a successful program.
1:33:21
SPEAKER_01: Heck yeah.
1:33:22
SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, with his contacts over the years, I mean, he could get you somewhere in two years.
1:33:27
SPEAKER_00: For sure, for sure.
1:33:28
SPEAKER_00: So it's just a little bit of a stopgap, and like we talked about Kellen earlier, his son is that he got an additional year at Fort Wayne.
1:33:35
SPEAKER_00: Supposedly, I haven't seen it in writing.
1:33:37
SPEAKER_00: So um, but there's still an opportunity, you know, beyond that.
1:33:42
SPEAKER_00: So um with our guys, we we always try to bring somebody in yearly.
1:33:47
SPEAKER_00: Um, we do sports recruits, we're trying to do more of that.
1:33:50
SPEAKER_00: This past year, we just did 17s and 19s.
1:33:52
SPEAKER_00: Okay, we're gonna offer that at more levels because our NAL teams in the past had it.
1:33:58
SPEAKER_00: Recently, we didn't think it was useful, but next year we're gonna do 16, 17s, 19s for 80 and NAL.
1:34:07
SPEAKER_00: Um, and at 16 you're not really being recruited yet.
1:34:11
SPEAKER_00: Um, it's just more of identify schools that you like.
1:34:15
SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's a tricky.
1:34:16
SPEAKER_00: What do you mean I like?
1:34:18
SPEAKER_00: Well, that you that fit your social whatever, right?
1:34:22
SPEAKER_00: Like I wanted to go to a big school, but some people like you know, the smaller environments, you know.
1:34:28
SPEAKER_00: Well, and now I'm in one and I understand like the positives and negatives of each.
1:34:33
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, uh, and then there's obviously gonna be the economic piece, so social economic, then what about the soccer program?
1:34:42
SPEAKER_00: Are they good?
1:34:42
SPEAKER_00: Are they not good?
1:34:44
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then we try to have those conversations with the kids.
1:34:47
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, being involved for 20 plus years, like I have pretty good relationships with a lot of people, not everybody, I don't, of course, don't know everybody, but willing to shake hands, and today it's the first time we have right exactly.
1:35:02
SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, I'm and and thank you for inviting me on the show too.
1:35:06
SPEAKER_00: I think um, you know, this is great to kind of share some of my stories and my experiences where I'm at.
1:35:12
SPEAKER_00: Um, but we're yeah, we just we're trying to push people forward, and um I think just having realistic hopes, and we we got a bunch of kids going D2 and NAIA.
1:35:24
SPEAKER_00: Uh one of the Wolves kids is coming here.
1:35:27
SPEAKER_00: Uh we have a couple kids talking to U of M Dearborn, who's a good friend of mine, Chris Davonovic.
1:35:32
SPEAKER_00: Um let's see, we got a couple kids going to LTU with Will Dyer, yep, uh Tiffin.
1:35:38
SPEAKER_00: Uh I know we some people were talking to Saginaw Valley.
1:35:42
SPEAKER_00: So just to name name a few, and I'm sure I've missed some.
1:35:45
SPEAKER_00: I know I think last year we had a few kids go to Adrian, Charlie Miles.
1:35:50
SPEAKER_00: Um, so you know, we're doing everything we can to help like propel the kids.
1:35:56
SPEAKER_00: But again, if you don't want to go to a small school, then you end up at Michigan State and you play a club and you play in a mural and club's a high level at state in most schools.
1:36:06
SPEAKER_00: The women's team just won the national championship.
1:36:08
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
1:36:08
SPEAKER_00: I'm like trying to figure out how I can recruit some of those girls.
1:36:12
SPEAKER_00: Come to Madonna.
1:36:13
SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
1:36:13
SPEAKER_00: I'm staying right here.
1:36:16
SPEAKER_00: Man.
1:36:17
SPEAKER_01: Thanks, brother.
1:36:18
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's nice to meet you, man.
1:36:19
SPEAKER_01: You too.
1:36:20
SPEAKER_01: All right.
1:36:20
SPEAKER_01: I hate soccer.
1:36:24
SPEAKER_01: This episode is brought to you by Salt Athletic.
1:36:26
SPEAKER_01: A couple weeks ago, I'm training one of my college players.
1:36:29
SPEAKER_01: Uh, she plays at Kentucky.
1:36:31
SPEAKER_01: I noticed that she has uh one of these salt bags.
1:36:34
SPEAKER_01: Uh I see them on social media all the time, and I was wondering, I was like, okay, does this thing really work?
1:36:41
SPEAKER_01: Well, she opened up her bag and pulled her cleats out, and it was the worst smelling pair of cleats.
1:36:47
SPEAKER_01: Maybe that I've ever smelled.
1:36:51
SPEAKER_01: I didn't smell anything.
1:36:53
SPEAKER_01: And it was amazing that it could trap in all of the smell so that her bag doesn't stink, that her card doesn't stink, I can vouch for this problem more.
1:37:06
SPEAKER_01: As a goalkeeper, I would have had this 20 years ago for my gloves, and they do have a glove bag.
1:37:12
SPEAKER_01: Go to the link in the description for 10% of get rid of all the smell, guys.
