- 0:54Speaker 2: the Global Credit Union Cracking Audio Network, the crack of
- 0:58Speaker 2: the course, trying to add the salme stand with a
- 1:01Speaker 2: win also in a game that has extra meaning because
- 1:04Speaker 2: this evening is Hockey Fights Cancer Night, presented by Virginia
- 1:08Speaker 2: Mason Franciscan Health and a reminder for you. Throughout the
- 1:11Speaker 2: month of November, the Kraken joined the NHL to support
- 1:14Speaker 2: cancer patients and survivors in recognition of the Hockey Fights
- 1:18Speaker 2: Cancer campaign year round. In partnership with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health,
- 1:23Speaker 2: the Crack can promote early detection as they prevented a
- 1:26Speaker 2: measure to save lives cancer screening. By the way, going
- 1:29Speaker 2: on the Northwest Concourse, men forty and older can receive
- 1:33Speaker 2: a free prostate cancer screening from Virginia Mason Franciscan Health.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Walk ups welcome through the first intermission. Of course, tributes
- 1:41Speaker 2: also coming for this game throughout the entire evening. As
- 1:45Speaker 2: far as game matters, the Crack in facing San Jose
- 1:47Speaker 2: and their second matchup of the season and the Sharks
- 1:50Speaker 2: back in matchup one showing they mean business. The Kraken
- 1:54Speaker 2: fell six to one in that game on November fifth,
- 1:56Speaker 2: back at Climbate Pledge Arena, but the Crack and bouncing
- 1:59Speaker 2: back after that, going two to zero and two. Ever
- 2:03Speaker 2: since that game, setting third right now in the Pacific
- 2:06Speaker 2: Division and amidst a very very compact Western Conference. The
- 2:10Speaker 2: point gap right now, well, let's put it this way.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Unless you're the Colorado Avalanche, it is tight quarters right now.
- 2:17Speaker 2: There are ten teams within six points of each other,
- 2:20Speaker 2: beginning with second place Dallas in the West. So with
- 2:24Speaker 2: Thanksgiving coming up, which typically serves as a benchmark for
- 2:27Speaker 2: teams separating themselves from the pack for the playoffs, there
- 2:31Speaker 2: are still a lot to be decided here in a
- 2:33Speaker 2: very very tight Western Conference. We'll hear more from defenseman
- 2:37Speaker 2: Vince Dunn in just a bit in his reaction from
- 2:40Speaker 2: Thursday night and where his game's aff from a three
- 2:43Speaker 2: point output which also included plenty of depth up and
- 2:47Speaker 2: down the Craken lineup. Additionally, Dan Rousanowski joins us here
- 2:51Speaker 2: on Cracking this morning, his reaction from this start to
- 2:55Speaker 2: the Sharks season Dan Rusanowski and his words on the
- 2:59Speaker 2: Sharks coming up in just a bit. Well, the Kraken
- 3:02Speaker 2: taking on the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night and facing
- 3:05Speaker 2: a pretty stiff challenge after the Kraken offense nearly went
- 3:09Speaker 2: dry in a two to one shootout loss to a
- 3:12Speaker 2: very very tired Blue Jackets team that was also under
- 3:16Speaker 2: the weather. The Kraken, though, facing Winnipeg with ailments of
- 3:20Speaker 2: their own. No Joey Decord, no Jared McCann, no Freddie Gudreaux,
- 3:24Speaker 2: and even after a first period goal, no Coppocco exiting
- 3:28Speaker 2: with a lower body injury. But the Kraken trying to
- 3:31Speaker 2: fight for their lives. In period three, down by a goal,
- 3:35Speaker 2: they found an extra gear which told them they were
- 3:37Speaker 2: down but not out.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Now.
- 3:39Speaker 4: It's Tolbanant back to the point bits dunt straightaway tolban.
- 3:43Speaker 5: It suits stood.
- 3:51Speaker 6: Helly Tolbanan with a rocket from the right side. It's
- 3:56Speaker 6: a power play goal. Fifteen to forty nine to play
- 3:59Speaker 6: the we're tied at three.
- 4:01Speaker 7: But much like the same goal Elliethoven scored the other day,
- 4:04Speaker 7: it's on a power play, top of the circles, cracking
- 4:07Speaker 7: and moving the puck around the perimeter, but it gets
- 4:09Speaker 7: back to Vincetonne at the point he sends it down
- 4:11Speaker 7: to tobd In on that right circle. He puts everything
- 4:14Speaker 7: into it, beating hill of black blocker side down low.
- 4:17Speaker 4: This gave a tight an earies back to Marshman in
- 4:20Speaker 4: the circle. It's a hip check in the the master.
- 4:24Speaker 8: Call down black.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Star.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Maddy vaneers top of the right circle. He fights every
- 4:36Speaker 6: down low tick tag goal not captain, let's stop cracking.
- 4:41Speaker 7: On top by a four to three score. Well, this
- 4:43Speaker 7: one starts with a Mason Marshman down that right side.
- 4:46Speaker 7: He turns his body to protect the puck, gets it
- 4:48Speaker 7: back to Matty Veneers. As Jordan Niberley is swinging around
- 4:51Speaker 7: the back side of the dead we had a great
- 4:53Speaker 7: angle for him. From up here you can see Maddie
- 4:56Speaker 7: waiting for Jordan Nibley to get into position. As soon
- 4:58Speaker 7: as he was there, boom on a stick, tap of
- 5:01Speaker 7: the neck.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Board three cracker, three Seattle extra attacker off for Winnipeg,
- 5:06Speaker 6: Ryan Ling.
- 5:06Speaker 8: GrITT, he'll push it up the boards.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Winnipeg, not a little hold.
- 5:10Speaker 7: The line not even.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Ears near side.
- 5:12Speaker 2: The captain walks in stood back to back goals.
- 5:24Speaker 6: For the captain. He's got two. The tracking ahead by
- 5:28Speaker 6: two five, three, one thirty five left at Seattle.
- 5:33Speaker 7: One of the ways the cracker we're gonna have to
- 5:35Speaker 7: win this game was puck battles.
- 5:36Speaker 8: In that time.
- 5:37Speaker 7: There not even ears with a puck bottle win along
- 5:39Speaker 7: the boards, pokes it forward, finds differently over the far
- 5:42Speaker 7: side of the ice all by himself, imfidit goal for
- 5:45Speaker 7: seven second.
- 5:46Speaker 9: A goal for.
- 5:47Speaker 8: Seven is into by man engineers.
- 5:49Speaker 6: Five three crack seconds on the clock, shifely right side centers,
- 5:54Speaker 6: a pass.
- 5:55Speaker 4: In front that dies by everyone.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Five seconds left, puck tight off on.
- 5:59Speaker 6: An airboards, Horassey down low, Kyle Cutter, China pumping in,
- 6:03Speaker 6: He'll go it.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Fuck's hard.
- 6:10Speaker 6: The Seattle Cracket survive a late flurry from the Winnipeg
- 6:17Speaker 6: Jets to pick up their second win up a season
- 6:21Speaker 6: over Winnipeg five three here at home.
- 6:25Speaker 2: So we're not even at Thanksgiving yet, and the Kracking
- 6:28Speaker 2: have already claimed the head to head season series in
- 6:31Speaker 2: a five to three win over Winnipeg with one more
- 6:33Speaker 2: matchup to go, and that's not until April. But yet
- 6:37Speaker 2: the Kracking bouncing back from that Columbus loss in a
- 6:40Speaker 2: shootout that really wasn't the most impressive part of it
- 6:43Speaker 2: when they hung up five goals on Winnipeg, and that
- 6:46Speaker 2: bounced back type of effort impressive as it was, the
- 6:48Speaker 2: Kraken still made plenty of mistakes against Winnipeg and found
- 6:53Speaker 2: a way to hang four goals on Connor Hellibuck plus
- 6:56Speaker 2: and empty net Goldi claim their first comeback win of
- 6:59Speaker 2: the season when trailing after two periods, handing Winnipeg their
- 7:03Speaker 2: first loss when leading after two periods, as well the
- 7:06Speaker 2: krack and surviving wild swings with special teams, eventually coming
- 7:10Speaker 2: out one for three on the power play, holding Winnipeg
- 7:14Speaker 2: to one for three on the man advantage, plus Matt
- 7:17Speaker 2: Eveaneers in his line finding the extra gear in that
- 7:21Speaker 2: victory after being put together with him, Jordan Eberley and
- 7:25Speaker 2: Mason march Men Everley the captain with two goals, Matty
- 7:28Speaker 2: Baneers to assist, Mason march Mint to assist, but no
- 7:32Speaker 2: one had a bigger night offensively then Vince Done three
- 7:35Speaker 2: point game on his side. He owns twelve points in
- 7:39Speaker 2: seventeen games, and that three point outing was a new
- 7:43Speaker 2: season high. Here's Done's reaction after the game, meeting with
- 7:46Speaker 2: the media.
- 7:47Speaker 8: Pretty emotional out there. What do you think of the
- 7:49Speaker 8: third period?
- 7:50Speaker 9: It's pretty good. I think just a lot of character
- 7:53Speaker 9: to close the game out, and we knew the game
- 7:56Speaker 9: was close and we.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Fought the start of the game.
- 8:00Speaker 9: I think that both teams were battling pretty well out there,
- 8:03Speaker 9: and we didn't panic when we were down or when
- 8:09Speaker 9: we made little mistakes on the power play or to
- 8:13Speaker 9: get us onto the penalty killer, just five on five breakdowns.
- 8:17Speaker 9: So I think it's just good for us to know
- 8:18Speaker 9: that things happen in games and we can adapt to
- 8:23Speaker 9: them and pick each other up and close games out
- 8:26Speaker 9: when we need to.
- 8:26Speaker 7: To be able to come back from a goal down
- 8:28Speaker 7: three different times tonight, What does that kind of say
- 8:30Speaker 7: about your guys and way you were able to battle
- 8:32Speaker 7: for it.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been a lot of the opposite.
- 8:34Speaker 9: We're usually up and then letting teams back, So we
- 8:37Speaker 9: know we have both of those situations in us and
- 8:41Speaker 9: we need to be able to handle both. So it's
- 8:43Speaker 9: good to see our character in those times and guys
- 8:47Speaker 9: show up and just slowly chip away at the game.
- 8:49Speaker 9: It wasn't we didn't chase the game when we were down.
- 8:52Speaker 9: I think it's a good feeling when guys are buying
- 8:56Speaker 9: into each other and rolling over with four lines. I
- 8:59Speaker 9: thought everyone contribute a lot tonight, and it wasn't just
- 9:02Speaker 9: one certain player one certain line to get us that win.
- 9:06Speaker 9: Everyone was dialed in all the way to the end.
- 9:09Speaker 9: A lot of big plays when it was six on five,
- 9:11Speaker 9: and just a lot of different special teams and situations
- 9:16Speaker 9: to get us through that game.
- 9:17Speaker 5: It's a it's a character win on your goal.
- 9:19Speaker 4: What made you kind of circle to the front of
- 9:21Speaker 4: the net there instead of just going straight back to
- 9:22Speaker 4: the point.
- 9:23Speaker 9: Was there something that happened that made you think that
- 9:25Speaker 9: it was gonna pop out there for you. Usually when
- 9:28Speaker 9: you go down, the forward replaces the chandler was really
- 9:31Speaker 9: screaming go So I just kind of took my shot there.
- 9:35Speaker 5: I got a fortunate balance.
- 9:36Speaker 9: I think right now, we've been trying to make a
- 9:40Speaker 9: lot of plays, and I think today we dummied it
- 9:43Speaker 9: down a little bit. We were throwing pucks at the net,
- 9:45Speaker 9: slinging pucks and hoping to get better chances. I don't
- 9:48Speaker 9: think wins was necessarily trying to make that play to me,
- 9:52Speaker 9: but I respect what he did.
- 9:53Speaker 5: It was it was a great.
- 9:55Speaker 9: Play by him taking it to the net, and that's
- 9:56Speaker 9: how we're going to have to create goals. It's it's
- 9:58Speaker 9: not easy to score in this league, and it was
- 10:00Speaker 9: a great play by him to just try to get
- 10:02Speaker 9: it there and hope that good things would happen.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Vince on Capo's goal, is that the first time you
- 10:08Speaker 3: ever recorded and assist and a hit at the same time.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Maybe, to be honest, yeah, I really didn't. I kind
- 10:17Speaker 5: of like Blanko when the guy came at me. I
- 10:19Speaker 5: was just kind of didn't want to dive in.
- 10:22Speaker 9: Because sometimes, you know, you get too active and the
- 10:24Speaker 9: puck turns over, it can shoot back, and they're pretty
- 10:27Speaker 9: good off the rush and transition.
- 10:28Speaker 5: So I guess. So, I don't know. I wouldn't know
- 10:31Speaker 5: that answer. Yeah, maybe.
- 10:33Speaker 2: So for the krack end, it's time to move on
- 10:35Speaker 2: to San Jose and naming for payback. In the second
- 10:37Speaker 2: matchup of the year, San Jose took their lumps two
- 10:41Speaker 2: nights ago in a two nothing lost to Calgary at
- 10:43Speaker 2: the Saddle Dome, but not indicative of their recent run,
- 10:47Speaker 2: exploding for an a three and one burst in the
- 10:50Speaker 2: last twelve games and all part of this macln Celebrini
- 10:55Speaker 2: already going next level and hovering around the NHL scoring
- 10:59Speaker 2: lead right now with twenty six points in eighteen games.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Joe Thornton is also a part of helping lead the
- 11:05Speaker 2: San Jose youth. He's now part of the Hockey Hall
- 11:08Speaker 2: of Fame, of course, but he's been a new home
- 11:10Speaker 2: in San Jose post career with a purpose We spoke
- 11:14Speaker 2: more on that, plus more on the Sharks this week
- 11:17Speaker 2: with Sharks radio play by play voice and Hall of
- 11:20Speaker 2: Famer Dan Rusanowski in this cut from Cracking Weekly. Dan,
- 11:25Speaker 2: good to see you a few days ago, back here
- 11:27Speaker 2: in Seattle, looking forward to the next one already here,
- 11:29Speaker 2: But I want to first begin just from the first
- 11:32Speaker 2: time that these two teams met. What surprised you most
- 11:36Speaker 2: may be about the Sharks start here to this season.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Well, I think that it's taken a little while for
- 11:43Speaker 3: all things to start to piece together. I think that
- 11:45Speaker 3: that's been part of the story, and we have to
- 11:47Speaker 3: keep reminding ourselves how many different players are on the roster,
- 11:51Speaker 3: and that probably led to the somewhat slow beginning. It
- 11:54Speaker 3: was getting a little bit tiresome in San Jose, simply
- 11:57Speaker 3: because the last three years it's been really tough in
- 11:59Speaker 3: the month of ock, and so there was a kind
- 12:02Speaker 3: of a feeling of, oh no, here we go again.
- 12:04Speaker 3: But very very quickly things started to dissipate in that direction.
- 12:08Speaker 3: The Sharks started to, you know, show what they are
- 12:11Speaker 3: made of. And I think that they're only right now
- 12:13Speaker 3: beginning to really feel that they're in a position to
- 12:17Speaker 3: have a home iice advantage to make sure that they
- 12:19Speaker 3: can compete against anybody, and with recent results, I think
- 12:23Speaker 3: they've done a really good job against top teams, and
- 12:25Speaker 3: I think all of that is lent to the confidence
- 12:28Speaker 3: of the team. But then you throw on what Macklin
- 12:30Speaker 3: Celebrini's doing at age nineteen. You know, you usually look
- 12:34Speaker 3: at players and you say, Okay, he's a young guy,
- 12:37Speaker 3: and he's scoring a lot of points. All right, great, well,
- 12:41Speaker 3: most of the time, if you take a look at
- 12:42Speaker 3: it and you break it down between home and road,
- 12:45Speaker 3: usually that you know the young guy will get a
- 12:47Speaker 3: lot of points at home, won't score as much on
- 12:49Speaker 3: the road because they don't have the matchups, you don't
- 12:51Speaker 3: have the last change, and a whole variety of other factors.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Macklin Celebrini's leading the National Hockey League and scoring on
- 12:57Speaker 3: the road at age nineteen, and that's just sort of
- 13:00Speaker 3: testimony to what he's meant to the team and how
- 13:02Speaker 3: things are clicking for him and how we're looking at
- 13:06Speaker 3: the development of a next great era of unbelievable superstar
- 13:10Speaker 3: in the league.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I remember having a conversation with you with Randy Han
- 13:14Speaker 2: when you guys were here, and I think it just
- 13:16Speaker 2: kind of shed more light as far as just the
- 13:17Speaker 2: potential he's got, but already how special of to start
- 13:20Speaker 2: that he is up to. So before we touch more
- 13:23Speaker 2: on that, I can't help but think after the winless streak,
- 13:27Speaker 2: you guys go into New York and get a game
- 13:30Speaker 2: into overtime, win, a Celebrini hat trick, five point game,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and then the win for instance against New Jersey, a
- 13:37Speaker 2: team that is rolling right now under Sheldon Keith. Was
- 13:41Speaker 2: there a specific game that you really began to see
- 13:43Speaker 2: the pieces begin to really fall into places for this team.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I'd say probably that road trip. I'd say probably that
- 13:50Speaker 3: gaming reference at Madison Square Garden is probably the best example,
- 13:54Speaker 3: because in that amazing atmosphere, with that spotlight on the team,
- 13:59Speaker 3: the Sharks rose to the occasion and it wasn't just
- 14:01Speaker 3: Celebrini and I and we shouldn't, you know, we do
- 14:04Speaker 3: need to sing his praises and talk about what he's
- 14:06Speaker 3: meant to the club and what he's going to mean
- 14:08Speaker 3: in the future, not only to this club but to
- 14:10Speaker 3: the game of hockey, but also you know, the players
- 14:13Speaker 3: like Will Smith and Mario Ferrero and Colin Grath and
- 14:18Speaker 3: you know, I can go through the entire roster. Both
- 14:20Speaker 3: goaltenders started to play quite well. That was another thing too.
- 14:23Speaker 3: It took a while for both goaltenders to start to
- 14:26Speaker 3: really really click. And I think that game Madison Square
- 14:29Speaker 3: Garden was a big one because it was in the
- 14:31Speaker 3: big spotlight that they performed and after that they had
- 14:34Speaker 3: some confidence and they said, okay, we can do this.
- 14:37Speaker 3: They had a few other challenges. I think that you
- 14:40Speaker 3: know that that has developed and you know that sort
- 14:42Speaker 3: of is blossomed really with the first meeting in Seattle
- 14:45Speaker 3: where you know, the Sharks. The morning of that of
- 14:47Speaker 3: that game, we're not expecting to play seven defensemen and
- 14:50Speaker 3: eleven forwards. They were expecting to play a standard six
- 14:53Speaker 3: d and twelve forwards. Michael Misa got dinged up in
- 14:57Speaker 3: the morning skate, so they called Vinnie deharn and after
- 15:00Speaker 3: you know, they started really bag skating him and they said, well,
- 15:03Speaker 3: you're gonna have to You're gonna have to come in
- 15:05Speaker 3: a little earlier because you think you might have to play.
- 15:07Speaker 3: He ends up playing really well in the penalty kill.
- 15:09Speaker 3: And I think that they were very prepared special teams
- 15:12Speaker 3: against that team, so every time they had something thrown
- 15:15Speaker 3: at them, they seem to respond to it and do
- 15:17Speaker 3: it with enthusiasm and accept that challenge instead of letting
- 15:22Speaker 3: the challenges get to them. And I think that's sort
- 15:24Speaker 3: of a description of the way the season is going.
- 15:27Speaker 8: Dan, talk a little bit about the culture of this team,
- 15:30Speaker 8: the personality, if you will. You know, from the outside
- 15:33Speaker 8: looking in, it seems like a bunch of guys that
- 15:36Speaker 8: obviously take their jobs very seriously, but don't take themselves
- 15:40Speaker 8: very seriously. They keep things light. At a chance to
- 15:43Speaker 8: be between the benches last night, and you know, it
- 15:45Speaker 8: wasn't just towards the end of the game when it
- 15:47Speaker 8: was certainly out of hand for the cracking, but you
- 15:49Speaker 8: could see it throughout the game, a lot of smiles
- 15:51Speaker 8: on the bench, you know. Talk a little bit about that.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Well, I think that that's a big part of it.
- 15:56Speaker 3: You know, Larry Robinson used to always tell us back
- 15:59Speaker 3: in the day that one of the keys to all
- 16:01Speaker 3: of the Stanley Cup championships that he won, not only
- 16:03Speaker 3: as a player but later on as a coach or
- 16:05Speaker 3: a member of management, was because they remember that it
- 16:08Speaker 3: was just a game and that they have to have
- 16:10Speaker 3: fun playing the game. And you know, Igor larryanoff used
- 16:14Speaker 3: to always tell us, you don't work hockey, you play hockey.
- 16:17Speaker 3: And that's the side of it that you have to
- 16:20Speaker 3: remember about this game that's really important. So you probably
- 16:25Speaker 3: saw that. On the bench, they've got an element of that.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Of course, they've got prodigious talent to be able to
- 16:29Speaker 3: back it all up. But then again, behind the bench,
- 16:31Speaker 3: you've also got Ryan Warsowski who understands this generation quite well.
- 16:36Speaker 3: He's a very young coach in the National Hockey League
- 16:39Speaker 3: and he seems to get the best out of out
- 16:41Speaker 3: of that group of people. And you know, we saw
- 16:43Speaker 3: what he's already done with Team USA and the World Championships,
- 16:46Speaker 3: winning a gold medal too, So you know that's another
- 16:49Speaker 3: another factor that's important.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Dan touching on Maclin celebrating more, we've heard a lot
- 16:54Speaker 2: of the supplaieratives already about the comparisons his game. But
- 16:58Speaker 2: what do you see right now with where he's at
- 17:01Speaker 2: in just his nineteen year old season versus say, when
- 17:04Speaker 2: he could be, you know, peaking topping out at say
- 17:07Speaker 2: twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven years of age.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Sky's a limit for the kid. He can do everything,
- 17:13Speaker 3: he does it in all three zones and he does
- 17:15Speaker 3: it with a joy about the game that's very infectious.
- 17:19Speaker 3: He gets people to follow him as he drives the
- 17:22Speaker 3: energy and the level of the team. When things aren't
- 17:25Speaker 3: going well, he plays with a great competitiveness to try
- 17:28Speaker 3: to get things back under control. And all of these
- 17:31Speaker 3: things are things that are just starting to develop. I
- 17:33Speaker 3: think just before we played, you know, we had we
- 17:35Speaker 3: played the game between the Sharks and the Kraken. There
- 17:39Speaker 3: was a back to back set of games against Colorado
- 17:41Speaker 3: against Detroit where the Sharks beat Colorado in overtime. Next
- 17:44Speaker 3: game they were playing against the Red Wings, and through
- 17:47Speaker 3: that entire game, he and Maurit Sider had an unbelievable
- 17:51Speaker 3: back and forth Batleary going intensely at it, and he
- 17:56Speaker 3: just put his arms around that and it absolutely loved it,
- 17:58Speaker 3: and his teammates loved it too, And of course he
- 18:03Speaker 3: was doing that with the knowledge that if things ever
- 18:04Speaker 3: really did get out of hand. Number one, he was
- 18:07Speaker 3: showing Detroit that he wasn't going to put up with that.
- 18:09Speaker 3: But number two, he showed confidence that his teammates would
- 18:12Speaker 3: would be right there to back him up, which of
- 18:14Speaker 3: course they would be. So I think it's infectious. I
- 18:17Speaker 3: think it's I think it's fun and it's spectacular.
- 18:19Speaker 2: When it comes to Will Smith, who has been you know,
- 18:22Speaker 2: along his side basically here for the last couple of
- 18:24Speaker 2: years and a big part of this score. I mean,
- 18:26Speaker 2: we've seen a lot of the skill that was on
- 18:28Speaker 2: display here for the first game between these two teams
- 18:31Speaker 2: in Seattle.
- 18:32Speaker 5: Again.
- 18:32Speaker 2: But you know, I kind of asked a similar question
- 18:34Speaker 2: previously with Mattlan celebrating, But is there anybody you've seen prior,
- 18:38Speaker 2: whether it might be on the Sharks or in the
- 18:41Speaker 2: NHL that kind of reminds you of Will Smith in
- 18:43Speaker 2: his game.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Not really, He's got a combination of a lot of
- 18:46Speaker 3: different types of players. I think the biggest thing that
- 18:48Speaker 3: he has is an incredibly high hy iq. He knows
- 18:53Speaker 3: where the puck is going. I don't know how he does.
- 18:56Speaker 3: He has sort of a premonition as to where things
- 18:59Speaker 3: are going to happen. He puts himself into a position
- 19:02Speaker 3: because he's able to buy more time for himself. He
- 19:05Speaker 3: makes himself appear faster than perhaps the actual reality is,
- 19:09Speaker 3: and I think that that's really important. But there's another
- 19:11Speaker 3: factor about Will Smith too that has nothing to do
- 19:13Speaker 3: about hockey, and that has to do with the fun
- 19:15Speaker 3: part we were just talking about. I think that Macklin
- 19:18Speaker 3: is just very serious, very driven, very into it, and
- 19:20Speaker 3: yes he's got a great personality, but Will brings out
- 19:23Speaker 3: the lighter side in Macklin. And I think Macklin brings
- 19:26Speaker 3: out a more serious side and Will. So it's really
- 19:29Speaker 3: an interesting combination. You know, when you're trying to put
- 19:32Speaker 3: together a great team, every club needs a Batman and
- 19:35Speaker 3: a Robin, and it looks like the Sharks have both
- 19:37Speaker 3: of those superheroes on their roster.
- 19:40Speaker 7: Talk a little bit about and I've read this, I've
- 19:43Speaker 7: got to believe it's true, But talk a little bit
- 19:45Speaker 7: about the living situation with Macklin celebrity.
- 19:48Speaker 8: I understand he might have a roommate from a former Shark.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Well, it's not just Macklin, it's a whole group of
- 19:55Speaker 3: him now. So Macklin Celebrini lives with Joe Thornton, hall
- 19:58Speaker 3: of famer, somebody that also knew exactly how to approach
- 20:03Speaker 3: day to day life and knew how to enjoy the game.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Will Smith lives with Patrick Marlowe, which I think is
- 20:09Speaker 3: an interesting combination. Joe Thornton was number one overall, so
- 20:15Speaker 3: he knows exactly what Maclin is going through. He understands
- 20:17Speaker 3: all the pressures. He played in Boston, played for the Sharks,
- 20:21Speaker 3: always had the weight of the world and his shoulders
- 20:24Speaker 3: and on the other side of it, Patrick Marlow was
- 20:26Speaker 3: always kind of that second guy, even though he was
- 20:29Speaker 3: a superstar. He's likely going in the Hockey Hall of
- 20:32Speaker 3: Fame too. He was always sort of in the shadow
- 20:34Speaker 3: of Joe Thornton is the second overall guy, and Will
- 20:37Speaker 3: Smith is sort of in that area right now too,
- 20:39Speaker 3: so it's really interesting to see how those guys have
- 20:41Speaker 3: combined together. The third kind of leg of that appears
- 20:45Speaker 3: to be Michael Misa, who now was eighteen years of age.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I guess is spending a lot of time with the
- 20:50Speaker 3: Tyler Tiffoli family. So you know, another veteran player who's
- 20:54Speaker 3: been through everything. He's won a Stanley Cup, and these
- 20:58Speaker 3: kids are really benefiting from the fact that their living
- 21:01Speaker 3: situations are like that. Think about it when you know,
- 21:04Speaker 3: if I were nineteen years old and I were out
- 21:06Speaker 3: in the NHL and you gave me a million dollars,
- 21:08Speaker 3: I'd probably be dead right now. But these guys are so,
- 21:11Speaker 3: you know, such great shape. Pardon me, and and they're
- 21:14Speaker 3: they're they're really uh, they're really amazingly qualified. But they
- 21:20Speaker 3: have that balance with these players.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I can't imagine what I would want to do at
- 21:25Speaker 2: nineteen years of age with a million dollars in anywhere
- 21:28Speaker 2: I would want to live or anywhere i'd want to go.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It'd be a scary combination here. But that's what but
- 21:32Speaker 2: surety is for when you grow up. Here a little
- 21:34Speaker 2: bit more, Dan, I want to ask you about remember this.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Remember this one thing too that it's really important to
- 21:40Speaker 3: add to that is that, you know, we joke about
- 21:43Speaker 3: a little of that, but the truth is they are
- 21:45Speaker 3: still kids and part of them they are you know,
- 21:48Speaker 3: you see that off the ice, but on the ice
- 21:50Speaker 3: they're total pros. But you have to remember that, you know,
- 21:54Speaker 3: the process of becoming a full fledged adult is a
- 21:58Speaker 3: is a sometimes like a stock market art. You have
- 22:00Speaker 3: some moments where things go right and they don't. So
- 22:02Speaker 3: it's great to have people around you that show you
- 22:05Speaker 3: the right way. I mean, the biggest thing for me
- 22:09Speaker 3: is that number one to Bee of Thornton, Joe's wife
- 22:12Speaker 3: is an awesome cook. Christina Marlow makes the food like
- 22:17Speaker 3: nobody else. So they're getting proper nutrition, and they're getting
- 22:20Speaker 3: proper guidance with sleep. And they're also getting guidance between
- 22:24Speaker 3: with men that have their own families, that care about
- 22:27Speaker 3: their kids, that spend a lot of time away from
- 22:29Speaker 3: the rink with their children and take that responsibility. And
- 22:33Speaker 3: I think that that's just a great example for any
- 22:36Speaker 3: of these people.
- 22:37Speaker 8: It sounds like there's a lot of focus on the
- 22:39Speaker 8: off ice stuff. What about the on ice stuff.
- 22:41Speaker 7: Like Jumbo and Marlow reviewing tape with them at home
- 22:45Speaker 7: or they leave that stuff alone.
- 22:48Speaker 3: No, they probably do spend a little bit of time
- 22:51Speaker 3: talking about things like that with them, but I think
- 22:53Speaker 3: it's a little bit less organized when it comes to that.
- 22:56Speaker 3: You know, maybe if these guys ask them the question.
- 22:58Speaker 3: You know, both Joe Thornton and Patrick Martle were part
- 23:01Speaker 3: of the Sharks development staff and that's official as this year.
- 23:06Speaker 3: With Joe Thornton, once he got into the Hall of
- 23:08Speaker 3: Fame and so forth, we used to call him the
- 23:10Speaker 3: Director of Vibes with the Sharks. I'm not sure if
- 23:12Speaker 3: he still has that sort of unofficial title, but he's
- 23:15Speaker 3: part of the development staff. Patrick Mardl is a development
- 23:18Speaker 3: coach and they spend a lot of time with a
- 23:21Speaker 3: lot of the young prospects in the organization. And you
- 23:24Speaker 3: know the way it's worked is, you know, they go
- 23:25Speaker 3: back and they might even talk to a kid that's
- 23:27Speaker 3: playing junior and watch him play a little bit. And
- 23:30Speaker 3: we've got another group of people Tommy Wingles, Lucas Spiek's,
- 23:33Speaker 3: people that have had long careers that spend a lot
- 23:36Speaker 3: of time with these young players. And even in the
- 23:38Speaker 3: goaltending department. You again, you to back office, the director
- 23:41Speaker 3: of goaltending, but they've got Ryan Miller out there scouting
- 23:44Speaker 3: future goaltender prospects for the Sharks. And I think that
- 23:47Speaker 3: it's very organized to make sure that they have the
- 23:49Speaker 3: tools that are necessary for these kids to succeeds. Yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 3: they are, and they you know, if I had somebody
- 23:57Speaker 3: like that to be like Yoda, you know, I'm saying
- 23:59Speaker 3: that these guys really understand what needs to be done,
- 24:03Speaker 3: and uh, you know, they are also there for when
- 24:06Speaker 3: things don't go well. I think that might even be
- 24:09Speaker 3: the most important thing, because you know, they have to
- 24:12Speaker 3: be reminded that yes, they're gonna have great careers, yes
- 24:16Speaker 3: that you know, they need to feel really good about themselves.
- 24:19Speaker 2: We have a star Wars reference now checked, and we
- 24:21Speaker 2: can also can say Patrick Marlow I've mentioned here on
- 24:24Speaker 2: this conversation with Al Koniski to former Seattle Thunderbirds check
- 24:28Speaker 2: as well for that reference. Andrew Zanowski joining us here
- 24:31Speaker 2: on the Beacon Plumbing hotline, and Dan, last couple of
- 24:33Speaker 2: things before wet you go here.
- 24:35Speaker 8: Yeah, check.
- 24:37Speaker 2: I mean, once upon a time the San Jose Sharks,
- 24:40Speaker 2: an infant organization coming out of the cal Palace looking
- 24:43Speaker 2: to grow the game in San Jose, and the ninety
- 24:45Speaker 2: two massive playoff runs. And now you have players like
- 24:49Speaker 2: Joe Thornton from London, Ontario is ticking around, Patrick Marlow
- 24:52Speaker 2: as well, and the Baka that you mentioned, Tommy Wingles.
- 24:55Speaker 2: What's the What's what's the common uniting theme here with
- 24:59Speaker 2: what has now attracted players to stay and build a
- 25:04Speaker 2: greater foundation in San Jose, kind of like what the
- 25:06Speaker 2: Kraken want to be, you know, years upon years down
- 25:08Speaker 2: the road.
- 25:10Speaker 3: It takes a long time to do that. And of
- 25:12Speaker 3: course you also have the added factor. You have two
- 25:15Speaker 3: things going on here. Number one, no offense to any
- 25:18Speaker 3: place else, but we really believe Northern California is the
- 25:20Speaker 3: best place to live in the world. There are the
- 25:23Speaker 3: cost of living issues certainly that get involved the cost
- 25:25Speaker 3: of housing, so forth and so on. But the facilities
- 25:29Speaker 3: are great, the weather is beautiful, and the one thing
- 25:34Speaker 3: that we've always said is that the guy's wives and
- 25:36Speaker 3: girlfriends really love it in Northern California. So that's all
- 25:39Speaker 3: check marks in favor. But what you're talking about, too
- 25:43Speaker 3: is the development of the game. Scott Hannon, who's another
- 25:45Speaker 3: former Shark, another former Western Hockey leaguer, ended up. He's
- 25:49Speaker 3: run now running the junior Sharks program, and so that's
- 25:52Speaker 3: a real upgrade in terms of the total overview of
- 25:57Speaker 3: the coaching and working with the kids. I think that
- 26:00Speaker 3: the goal is to make the Sharks junior program here
- 26:04Speaker 3: stronger as time goes on. What's happened over years, and
- 26:07Speaker 3: what happens oftentimes with young kids is they get to
- 26:10Speaker 3: be about fifteen. This was the tradition in the Northern
- 26:13Speaker 3: California area. You become really good and then you leave. Well,
- 26:16Speaker 3: now they want to make it so that they can
- 26:18Speaker 3: stay and you've got more people sticking around.
- 26:21Speaker 7: You know.
- 26:21Speaker 3: You remember a few years ago, I think it was
- 26:23Speaker 3: one year, I can't remember the exact year, but four
- 26:25Speaker 3: people were drafted in the first round and they were
- 26:27Speaker 3: all from the Saint Louis area. Well, that's because of
- 26:31Speaker 3: all of those guys that's stuck around to Saint Louis
- 26:33Speaker 3: and now are coaching all these kids. And I think
- 26:36Speaker 3: that that's the kind of direction we like to see
- 26:39Speaker 3: things going here. Most of it still is with the
- 26:42Speaker 3: you know, the the NHL team's development staff and so forth.
- 26:45Speaker 3: But you know, Mark Smith lives here. He's involved in
- 26:49Speaker 3: coaching girls and guys in the Junior Sharks program. Scott
- 26:53Speaker 3: Hannon is here. There are a number of other people
- 26:56Speaker 3: that have stuck around, and I think it creates a
- 26:58Speaker 3: great atmosphere for.
- 26:59Speaker 2: The all right, great to hear from the Hall of
- 27:02Speaker 2: Fame voice Dan Rosanowski for the radio side of the
- 27:05Speaker 2: San Jose Sharks, a part of them since expansion back
- 27:09Speaker 2: in nineteen ninety one. Dan Rusanowski, that conversation, by the way,
- 27:13Speaker 2: more in full all a part of Crack and Weekly,
- 27:16Speaker 2: dropped here of course via the Crack and Audio Network
- 27:19Speaker 2: on the iHeartRadio app. So matchup number two coming up
- 27:22Speaker 2: with the Crack and trying to end their homestand with
- 27:24Speaker 2: a win and with a bang. After this four straight
- 27:28Speaker 2: opening on the road this next week in Detroit. Special
- 27:33Speaker 2: night coming here for Hockey Fights Cancer, presented by Virginia
- 27:36Speaker 2: Mason Franciscan Health and a part of this includes their
- 27:41Speaker 2: table at the Modelo Cantina BI section seven to eight
- 27:44Speaker 2: a Climate Pledge Arena. So well invite you to stop
- 27:47Speaker 2: on bye to ring the bell in celebration of cancer survivors.
- 27:51Speaker 5: Take a photo.
- 27:52Speaker 2: At the lavender crack and Hockey Fights Cancer backdrop, grab

- 28:06Speaker 2: you at six thirty. Once again, pop dropped little past
