- 0:00Welcome to the One Small Change. I am thrilled as always, that
- 0:03you're spending time with me this week and, you know, are joining for this
- 0:07journey of exploration and transformation. And I'm your host,
- 0:10Yvonne McCoy. I bring almost 30 years of entrepreneurial
- 0:14experience and I have a passion for discovering growth through the power of
- 0:18seemingly small change. And every week, I bring you someone
- 0:22who has an amazing story and they will share how a
- 0:26small or unexpected or insignificant decisions sparked a
- 0:29remarkable transformation and growth in both their life
- 0:33and their professional, you know, their personal and professional life.
- 0:37And this week we have with us the amazing Nancy O'Keefe.
- 0:40Nancy, thank you so much for sharing your time with us. Oh, thank
- 0:44you for having me. So I'm just going to let you rip.
- 0:48Tell us what, what you do and tell us what, what happened that
- 0:52made you do what you do. It makes you better at it than anybody
- 0:55else. Well, Imana, I'm a business coach, and
- 0:59I have been a business consultant and a business coach for over 30 years.
- 1:04But in the last seven years or so, I have
- 1:07discovered human design. It actually came across my
- 1:11radar and I dismissed it because it looked very complicated
- 1:15and I was busy. Like all entrepreneurs, I had no time and no
- 1:19extra time to look into something new. But it kept showing up. So
- 1:22I started looking at it. And I've always used assessments in
- 1:26my work. I did a lot of work with talent development and
- 1:30helping people really key in on their strengths and improve
- 1:34themselves in terms of their careers as an
- 1:38entrepreneur as they're in their businesses. And human
- 1:41design, frankly, just blew me away. First, I recognized
- 1:45some characteristics of my own that I
- 1:49had kind of been hiding. You know, I've
- 1:53always been outspoken. I'm different. I'm a rebel. I think differently.
- 1:56And that wasn't always welcomed. And sometimes I just,
- 2:00you know, kept my thoughts to myself and, you know, just kind of hid in
- 2:03the background and didn't want to rock any boats or
- 2:07create any kind of a stir until I looked at my human design
- 2:11chart and I realized, well, that's what you're here to do. You're a visionary
- 2:14disruptor, and you're here to create a stir. You're here to help people
- 2:18see their true selves and help them really
- 2:22understand how to step into the authentic self.
- 2:25So I pivoted my whole business. I was doing systems, process,
- 2:30talent, blah, blah, blah. And that just all of a sudden became
- 2:34extremely uninteresting to me. And now all I do is work with
- 2:38people to align themselves with their authentic selves and, and
- 2:41to translate that into a business that feels easy,
- 2:45flows, has natural abundance, allows them to
- 2:49magnetize themselves to their clients by being visible
- 2:53and being valued because of what they do and what they bring to the
- 2:57table. And it's just been an incredible shift for me
- 3:00personally and for my business. Well, I have to tell you
- 3:04that first of all, we both agree, I think that
- 3:08we have unique abilities, and it's kind of like a recipe. We
- 3:12could all have the same ingredients, but in different amounts. Absolutely.
- 3:16And so you end up with something different. And I had an
- 3:20experience with someone else who is a podcast guest,
- 3:24and we were talking about something after the show, and she said, you know,
- 3:27you aren't compromising, you're surrendering.
- 3:31And it was like, oh my God. And I kind of went
- 3:35back and looked at everything and it was from the human design, you
- 3:39know, perspective. And it was like, she's
- 3:42right. She's absolutely right. So the first
- 3:46thing I'm going to say is, you know, one of the things that
- 3:50you said in your bio is that, you know, you guide women
- 3:53entrepreneurs into impactful service
- 3:57businesses that make a bigger difference. And so I
- 4:01want to talk about challenges that women have or that you're
- 4:04seeing, because I think we are so underrated
- 4:07sometimes and we, we do it to ourselves as well as let other
- 4:11people do it to us. Well, all
- 4:14conditioning is a learned experience. And
- 4:18from the time we were very young, our well meaning parents gave
- 4:22us rules. You know, don't stick your finger in the light socket, don't do these
- 4:26things. It's harmful, it's not safe. And we learn through what
- 4:29we're taught about safety. And one of the things women
- 4:33have always been taught is to be basically subservient,
- 4:37nurture others, be in a position to put yourself kind of
- 4:41last. The children, the family comes first. And
- 4:45we've all grown up accustomed to just
- 4:48serving everyone else to the point of our own detriment.
- 4:52Sometimes many, many women never
- 4:56feel comfortable stepping out and being who they came here to be.
- 5:00Because of that, I'll call it training. And
- 5:04I love watching women really start to
- 5:07peel back those layers and get at who they are
- 5:11and be willing to be bold enough to stand in it. And
- 5:15one of the things that I do with my clients is that we work
- 5:19on creating a point of view, creating a, a belief and
- 5:22standing in that, being willing to really, you know, die on the
- 5:26hill for it, because that's what makes you different and stand
- 5:30out from everybody else. We are suffering in this
- 5:33marketplace from, you know, sameness. We all sound
- 5:37the same. We Spent a decade learning how to do funnels and
- 5:41scripts, and all it's done is mute our voices so that we
- 5:45all sound like robots. You know, people say, well, what about
- 5:48AI? We're kind of already there in the messenger messaging
- 5:52department. We're already sounding like everybody else. And we all
- 5:56have something unique. One of the great things about human
- 5:59design is, is it shows us that each and every one of us is different.
- 6:03It is the science of differentiation. And in our society,
- 6:07what do we do about differences? We hide them. We don't value
- 6:10them. Matter of fact, we have even gotten to the point where, where we
- 6:14hate because of them. It's just gone so far
- 6:17afield of what differences are meant to serve us with.
- 6:21Differences are meant to be juicy. They're the good stuff.
- 6:25When we look at somebody and see how they're different from us,
- 6:28there's lessons to be learned, things to be shared,
- 6:32wisdom, experience in that juiciness. And we're letting
- 6:35all that slip and fall through the cracks.
- 6:39So, you know, I love helping women get a voice and
- 6:43because I feel like they haven't felt comfortable having one.
- 6:47And those that have been able to get a voice and
- 6:51stand out have been ridiculed or
- 6:55shut down in some way. Not taken
- 6:58seriously, not seen, not heard. So
- 7:02we're shifting. The energy is shifting on the planet. We've been
- 7:06in a certain energy for the last 400 years. And in
- 7:092027, that's the hard date for the shift. We're
- 7:13moving to a more individually empowered energy, an
- 7:17energy that is far more collaborative and feminine and
- 7:20way less masculine. And what we've been under
- 7:24this, I feel, is women's time to shine.
- 7:28Well, I'm on a mission. I want to help women find their voice
- 7:32because their voice matters. And let's get ready because
- 7:36when the prevailing winds shift, when we want to be able to step
- 7:40up and share our wisdom with the world. Okay, so
- 7:43I'm going to, I'm kind of going to play kind of like devil's advocate
- 7:47a little bit. And so, you know, I'm, I'm a
- 7:51very analytical, show me the data kind of gal,
- 7:55which does not mean that I'm not starting to step more into my
- 7:59intuitive, you know, and my gut feeling and stuff. But
- 8:03for people who say this sounds like hogwash,
- 8:07you know, this sounds like a lot of woo woo stuff.
- 8:11Let's see if we can, let's see if we can, you know, make it a
- 8:14little bit more. Help people be a little bit more open. From my
- 8:17perspective, I believe, you know, if you can believe that every
- 8:21snowflake is different. Why can't you believe each person is different?
- 8:26And the thing that I say is your
- 8:29differentness is what brings the right client to you
- 8:33because they feel that they are heard, that they
- 8:37are valued, that somebody has shared some of the experiences
- 8:40that they have. And what that means is
- 8:44that people will be willing to pay you more because you
- 8:48more on, they trust you faster. Right, like you more.
- 8:53So can you talk about some of the things that you see happen in people's
- 8:56business when they tap into their uniqueness? Well,
- 9:00over the last seven or so years I have given hundreds
- 9:04of human design readings and I am
- 9:08blown away at the accuracy. People have said to me, wow, how
- 9:12did you know that much about me? All I gave you was my birth information.
- 9:16It is very real and it is based in a number of ancient
- 9:20systems as well as quantum physics.
- 9:24There, you know, there is a lot of evidence that this is not woo
- 9:27woo, this is real. We came into the world as
- 9:31a ball of energy. We all understood in seventh grade science class
- 9:35that everything is energy. It's either a solid, a liquid
- 9:39or a gas. And we're the same way. And
- 9:42human design talks about our energetic DNA. Now we know
- 9:47anybody that's ever watched a crime drama on TV knows that we have physical
- 9:50DNA. If you've done ancestry.com or anything like
- 9:54that, we know we have certain characteristics that are
- 9:58our physical DNA. Well, the energetic DNA in
- 10:02your human design, those 64 gates that have that
- 10:05energy follow the codons in the DNA.
- 10:09There's a lot of scientific evidence around this. Now it
- 10:13is reasonably new and the scientific evidence is
- 10:16emerging, but it is real
- 10:20and it's, you know, amazing. It's an amazing body of work
- 10:24that was introduced in 1987 and it's growing
- 10:27by leaps and bounds every year. So as more and
- 10:31more people get involved with it, do readings,
- 10:34explore the depths of it, we're going to just learn some
- 10:38amazing things from it for the really the good
- 10:42of humankind. Really. Well, you know, the thing that I want
- 10:45to say to people is just because, you know, there
- 10:49are things that have been around for centuries and just because
- 10:53it's old doesn't mean it's not true. Do you know? I
- 10:56mean, so I think that, that you know, there was, I forgot
- 11:00who the person was, a very famous.
- 11:04Health. Person once he goes that said, you
- 11:08know, if you break your arm, I'm not going to tell you to
- 11:11meditate, I'm going to tell you to go, you know, to the emergency room.
- 11:15But if you're dealing with some other things, maybe meditation is the thing
- 11:19that need. And so I think just like everything else
- 11:22that, you know, the more assessments, you know, the more
- 11:26things you do to get to know who you are, the better off you're going
- 11:30to be. And whether that is therapy, whether that is
- 11:34disc, whether that is, you know. Myers Briggs,
- 11:37Myers Briggs. But, you know, I find a piece of truth in all of them
- 11:41every time I do it, you know, and you put you, you know, somebody
- 11:44said, you know, when you go in a grocery store, you don't feel like you
- 11:47have to buy every box of cereal. You go, you're looking for a particular thing,
- 11:51you take an assessment, you walk away with a particular thing that, that
- 11:55resonates with you and add it to your. You add it to your
- 11:58toolbox. So I want to ask you, what are three things
- 12:02that we can do that can help us with this, that can, you know,
- 12:05help us to discover who we are and, you know, if
- 12:09you've got a gift, how's that going to help? Well, the first thing I would
- 12:13recommend is that you start your human design journey. And if
- 12:17you go out to my website, nancyoke coaching.com
- 12:21you can actually put your birth information in and pull
- 12:25your personalized human design chart, which is a
- 12:28picture of your energy and a report that explains it. And
- 12:32that's a good sort of primer. As a matter of fact, I call that report
- 12:35the primer that gives you a sense of what's in it. And
- 12:39if you want to continue your journey and learn more about it, I
- 12:43have other resources on my website under the resources
- 12:46tab, ebooks and some other things that will help you deepen your
- 12:50knowledge a little bit about human design. Start there.
- 12:54And if after you look at your chart and your report,
- 12:57some of that resonates with you, then you want to take
- 13:01the next step. Maybe that's a reading, maybe that's going out to
- 13:05Amazon and buying a book and diving deeper.
- 13:09But helping yourself understand where you have been
- 13:12conditioned, where you're settling, where you're
- 13:16not feeling comfortable being yourself
- 13:20in the world, is the first step. Awareness is always the
- 13:24first step in change and transformation. And then you
- 13:27just look at it. Once you become aware, you can start to, you know,
- 13:31to look back. It's a process. You didn't become conditioned in five minutes.
- 13:35You're not going to decondition in five minutes, but you can start looking at
- 13:39some of the tenets that you were raised with as a child, some of
- 13:43the societal norms that we live under. And you can
- 13:46ask yourself, do I really believe this? Is
- 13:50this really true for me? You'll also learn about a
- 13:54very important aspect of your decision making authority
- 13:57that is in your human design. We've all been taught to make
- 14:01decisions in our head to, with logic, weigh the pros and cons,
- 14:05and that's a good thing to do. But where we really make decisions
- 14:09in is in other parts of our body. And that depends on
- 14:12your energy type, which will be actually told to
- 14:16you in this report. And if you feel into those areas of your
- 14:20body, you'll get signs from your body about whether this is an
- 14:23aligned choice or not. You know, you'll feel a pang in your stomach or
- 14:27you'll feel, you know, a pounding of your heart or
- 14:31some other physical feeling that'll let you know whether you're on
- 14:35the right track. There are a lot of people running around in the
- 14:39world today who've made decisions based purely on logic and
- 14:42purely on the pros and cons. And they're not happy because they
- 14:46didn't weigh in from a feelings perspective. And
- 14:50that's kind of the missing way we make decisions in our
- 14:53society today. So if you just get that out of it, that'll help you a
- 14:57lot in your life. And I think you're talking about something really important.
- 15:01I mean, I think that, I think that
- 15:05so many times, especially for women with the
- 15:09preconceived ideas and the limiting beliefs, you know, our
- 15:12decisions are not truly our own. You know, they're kind of,
- 15:16you know, we're kind of pushed or nudged in a certain direction or
- 15:20whatever. And you know what? I find that so
- 15:25exciting for me is I say what? Part of my, you know,
- 15:28I probably should stop saying it's my secret goal. But my secret
- 15:32goal for every woman that I work with is that she become, you know, that
- 15:35she comes into her own CEO mindset, right, to make the
- 15:39decisions that, you know, she wants to make based
- 15:43on what she is important to her. Right. And it
- 15:47just, you know, you know, I just remember going to a
- 15:51graduation once. I was doing adult education, and the person
- 15:54on the stage said I had a choice of two jobs.
- 15:58One was, you know, kind of my dream
- 16:02job in terms of money, but the other one was the one that I really
- 16:05wanted to do, and so I picked that one. And
- 16:09I remember so clearly the voice in my head saying,
- 16:13that's a choice. You can do that.
- 16:17Because every job I'd always ever taken had been
- 16:21based on money. And it was like, it was,
- 16:25yeah, it was like a thunderclap, you can do that.
- 16:28Yeah. Do you know? And so the thing is, you
- 16:32know, knowing what your values are, knowing what you're
- 16:36good at, knowing what fires you up,
- 16:39right. In terms of making your decision is, you know,
- 16:43sure, you want to know the logical stuff. You want, you know, you don't want
- 16:47to make the same mistakes as other people, but knowing that you're different from
- 16:50other people, that maybe that won't become a mistake for you. For you.
- 16:54Exactly. And so, you know, you just can be so much
- 16:58more exciting and. And your life can be so much
- 17:02more fulfilling. And I, like I said, one of the things I think that we
- 17:05have so much in common and we probably could keep talking about this. I think
- 17:09we could. How women are.
- 17:12Are not shining the way that they are capable of.
- 17:17And, you know, and a lot of it is just educated into us.
- 17:22And there are lots of, you know, not just, not just being a woman. I
- 17:25mean, there's a thing called the Woman's Journey to Fulfillment. I don't know
- 17:29if you've ever read I forgot. I. I should write this woman's name on
- 17:33a sticky note because I quote her all the time. But, you
- 17:37know, after childhood, in her model, there's motherhood,
- 17:41which I call the nurturer. Right. And someplace along the
- 17:44line, if something, you know,
- 17:48incredible doesn't happen, you know, like an accident or something like that, around
- 17:52the time that you get to the end of your 40s or your 50s, I
- 17:55think almost everybody goes, is this all there is? I
- 17:59want more. And so, you know, that's when we're kind
- 18:03of going on that spiritual quest to say, who am I,
- 18:06what do I want to do, what do I want to leave? And. And then
- 18:10those that become entrepreneurs take it one step further and say,
- 18:14I'm going to help other people either get through this or not go,
- 18:18not have to go through it. Right. And that becomes our
- 18:22passion. And so it is because of the different
- 18:25experiences in our different, you know, DNA and stuff like that that we
- 18:29can help the same people who have the same situation
- 18:33get to trust us much faster. And it is
- 18:37an amazing, amazing thing. So. All right,
- 18:42obviously, that's my high horse as well. I
- 18:46agree, though. You're right. I agree. So let me ask you
- 18:50this. So I. We've got your website so people can co.
- 18:54Take that assessment. I would say to people, you should definitely do that
- 18:57because no matter what the results are, you're going to walk away with a piece
- 19:01of information that's going to help you grow. Absolutely. So
- 19:05the other thing is, the trick Question before the commercial, and that is, when
- 19:09was the last time you did something new for the first time? Oh,
- 19:12probably yesterday. Great. What did
- 19:16you do? Well, I'm. I'm an experimenter.
- 19:20That's how I learn. So I'm always trying things.
- 19:23What did I do yesterday that was new? I tried
- 19:28to create something on my website that I had never done before.
- 19:31It was an integration with another program,
- 19:35and frankly, it didn't go very well. I have to go back and see what
- 19:38I did wrong. But. But yes. So, I mean, I'm always
- 19:42experimenting. I love technology, and if I find a new
- 19:45piece of software, I'm all over learning about that. I
- 19:49probably do something new almost every day. And you know
- 19:53what? That's a good thing. You know, one of the things that. That
- 19:57I've learned in terms of being more positive is,
- 20:01is I. When. When I come up against something, I go, am I being
- 20:04judgmental or am I being curious? You know, how do I face
- 20:08this? And for so much of my life, I was highly judgmental
- 20:13because that's kind of how we protect ourselves. It's like, this is not good.
- 20:16I'm not doing this. I'm. You know, and as opposed to saying,
- 20:20tell me more, you know, you know how. Tell
- 20:24me what you're thinking about. Tell me, you know, how I can learn from this.
- 20:27And it's. It makes life so much nicer. Okay,
- 20:31before we run out of time, which we are fast doing, I
- 20:34gotta be sure to make sure you guys subscribe and share and engage on social
- 20:38media. About the podcast, and the reason I started it was because
- 20:42I wanted to expose you to as many different people as possible
- 20:45so that you could grow your business and, you know, have a, you know,
- 20:49also build a vibrant community. And so I hope you'll continue to,
- 20:53you know, to join me on the one small change. And, you know, the
- 20:56idea is that we want you to have a bold vision and for
- 21:00innovative possibilities. And so, Nancy, I'm going to ask you,
- 21:04what are your last words of wisdom? What do you. What do you want people
- 21:06to remember? You're not broken.
- 21:10You're not broken. You're perfect, just as you were designed.
- 21:13And stop looking outwardly for
- 21:16validation about who you are and what's right and what's wrong
- 21:20for you, because all the answers are inside you.
- 21:24Here, here. I say you're you. You don't need to be fixed. You just need
- 21:28to be found. So we are in total agreement about that.
- 21:31Okay, People, remember, the change is simple, but it's not
- 21:35always easy. So it requires courage, resilience, and a
- 21:39willingness to step outside your comfort zone. And, and what I'm going to say to
- 21:42you is if you're comfortable or if you're afraid of being
- 21:46uncomfortable, you are not growing, you are stagnating.
- 21:50So be curious, get out of your comfort zone and see what
- 21:53amazing things await you out there. And so I hope
- 21:57that you will continue to join me on the one small change. Until the
- 22:01next time, stay very, very curious. Nancy,
- 22:05thank you so much. Thank you, Yvonne. This was wonderful. This was
- 22:08great.
