- 0:14Have you ever tried to fix something, but the
- 0:16tool that you needed wasn't in the toolbox? It
- 0:19just doesn't work, right? Well, the same thing
- 0:23is true when it comes to building great relationships.
- 0:25There is a specific key required. And if you
- 0:29have it, you're in business. If you don't, it's
- 0:31probably not going to work very well. If you
- 0:34want to learn what it takes to build great relationships,
- 0:37stay with me. I'm Dave Drury, and this is Living
- 0:42on the Edge. Today, Chip Ingram continues his
- 0:44series, Caring Enough to Connect, Building Bridges
- 0:47to Those We Love. With a principle he says completely
- 0:50changed his own marriage from the inside out.
- 0:53You simply can't give away what you don't already
- 0:56have. If you don't know deep down in your own
- 0:59heart that you are already loved by God, Chip
- 1:02says you'll spend your whole life trying to manufacture
- 1:05love and acceptance from everyone around you
- 1:08instead. Well, now let's get started with today's
- 1:11message titled, You Can't Give Away What You
- 1:14Don't Possess. I'm talking about basically life
- 1:18lessons in terms of building a great family and
- 1:22just great friendships. Principles that have
- 1:23to do with marriage, parenting, friendships,
- 1:26your boss. And so let me do a quick review. Principle
- 1:30number one, the biggest lesson I learned was
- 1:32it all begins with God. on how to have great
- 1:41ones by his intent. And so the passage was Proverbs
- 1:459, 10. It says, The fear of the Lord is the beginning
- 1:48of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One
- 1:50is understanding. Saying, God, the wisdom, the
- 1:53skill to do relationships, you have it. And then
- 1:56the practice was, make God's word your handbook
- 1:59for relational guidelines. In other words, if
- 2:01God says, look, this is how to do marriage, do
- 2:05it his way. If he says this is how to raise your
- 2:07kids, do it his way. If he says this is how to
- 2:09respond to your parents, do it his way. If he
- 2:11says, look, here's how you do business relationships,
- 2:13friendships, do it his way. The second principle
- 2:16was that everyone is desperately insecure. We
- 2:20looked at the very beginning of time and Adam
- 2:22and Eve and that once sin entered the world,
- 2:25we're all, varying degrees, we're just desperately
- 2:28insecure people. And so we said the passage was
- 2:31Genesis chapter 3, and then our practice was
- 2:34take off your mask. Authenticity builds genuine
- 2:38relational intimacy, and hypocrisy destroys it.
- 2:41That great truth that people are not looking
- 2:44for perfect people, but people like you and me
- 2:48are really looking for authentic, real people.
- 2:50Principle number three is everyone behaves in
- 2:53a way that makes sense to them. Everyone you
- 2:57meet, every behavior you encounter, whether it's
- 2:59from your dad, your mom, your mate, your friend,
- 3:02your boss, an employee, everyone behaves in a
- 3:05way that makes sense to them. When people act
- 3:10in immature, inappropriate, or even have patterns
- 3:14that appear absolutely dysfunctional and damaging,
- 3:17they're doing it for reasons that at least inside
- 3:21their head and from their experience, it makes
- 3:23sense. Principle number four, You cannot impart
- 3:27what you do not possess. You say, well, what's
- 3:30that got to do with relationships? I'll get to
- 3:32that. Relationships, it all begins with God.
- 3:35What does he say? Then I understand every person
- 3:39beginning with me is desperately insecure. And
- 3:41then I begin to look at and process by saying,
- 3:44people act in all these unusual ways, but it
- 3:47actually makes sense to them. It makes sense.
- 3:50And then finally, you can't impart what you don't
- 3:53possess. In other words, if you do not like you,
- 3:57you will never love others. And I don't mean
- 4:02that like pop psychology. I mean like Jesus.
- 4:06You know, we say, what's the great commandment?
- 4:11Matthew 22, 38 and 39. You shall love the Lord
- 4:13your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
- 4:15with all your mind, and love your neighbor, how?
- 4:19As yourself. Now, if we're desperately insecure
- 4:22and I don't like me, it's really hard if I don't
- 4:29feel whole, if I don't feel loved, it's really
- 4:32hard to give away something I don't have. When
- 4:37I grew up in those early years in high school,
- 4:41I was, as I shared, very desperately insecure
- 4:43for lots of reasons. In seventh, I really liked
- 4:47sports. My dad, you know, We're impacted by our
- 4:49family. My dad was a great athlete, you know,
- 4:52drafted into the pros and, you know, won the
- 4:55state of golden gloves and boxing and all kind
- 4:58of great stuff. And so, you know, seventh grade,
- 5:01I'm four foot 11. Eighth grade, I shoot up to
- 5:06five feet one. Ninth grade, I'm five feet four
- 5:10in a junior high of seven or 800 students. And
- 5:13I weigh like a hundred and, you know, probably
- 5:14three pounds. In your childhood memory, when
- 5:18you can look at all the students of an entire
- 5:20school and you want to be a basketball player,
- 5:22and there's only two people that are shorter
- 5:25than you are, Cindy Christian and Brad Starr.
- 5:30Is that bizarre that I still remember their names?
- 5:33Right? Tell me our childhoods don't end. So here
- 5:39I am, the super skinny, super short, feeling
- 5:42desperately insecure, desperately inferior. So
- 5:45what did I do? I did what you do. We all compensate.
- 5:51And so some of the amazing good things I got
- 5:53from my father was set goals, develop a strategy,
- 5:55and work harder than everyone else. If you're
- 5:57working while they're sleeping, good things will
- 5:59happen to you. And so I became a workaholic at
- 6:05about 13 and driven. And I practiced when no
- 6:10one else practiced. And by God's grace, I bumped
- 6:13up a few inches eventually. But here's what happened.
- 6:17What I learned was that performance in school,
- 6:21in sports, in grades, relationship skills to
- 6:27get people to like me, and appearing in ways
- 6:30that people would approve would buy me affirmation.
- 6:34And affirmation feels a lot like love, but it's
- 6:38not. See, affirmation is I affirm you for what
- 6:42you did. I affirm you for how you look. I affirm
- 6:45you for what you accomplished. I affirm you because
- 6:47you're good with the guitar or good on the drums
- 6:49or good at basketball or good at lacrosse. I
- 6:52affirm you because, wow, you're one of the prettiest
- 6:54people I've ever seen. I affirm you because your
- 6:56dad's really rich and I like going on vacations
- 6:58with you. And so most of us, some point in time,
- 7:04figure out how to get affirmation. And then,
- 7:09by God's grace, many of us come to know Jesus.
- 7:12And we know intellectually what's happened. We
- 7:16were pulled out of the kingdom of darkness and
- 7:17the kingdom of God. All of our sins have been
- 7:20forgiven. We have a new father. We have a new
- 7:22family. We have a new peace. We have a new future.
- 7:25We have a certain. Our significance has been
- 7:28established. We're the object of God's love.
- 7:30The prayer of the upright is his delight. We're
- 7:33loved like we will never ever be loved, totally
- 7:35apart from our performance. And we're a brand
- 7:37new creature in Christ that we live out in this
- 7:39fallen world. But see, 2 Corinthians 5 .17 says,
- 7:43if any man or if any woman is in Christ, the
- 7:46old things pass away. Tense of the verb, they're
- 7:49gone forever. Behold, all things become new.
- 7:53Tense of the verb. It's a process. Yes, I was
- 7:56in darkness. Now I'm in light. I was a child
- 7:59of the darkness. Now I'm a son of the light.
- 8:00Yes, I'm forgiven. I'm significant. I'm loved.
- 8:03I have the Holy Spirit. I have gifts. I've been
- 8:05sealed. My future. I'm the object of God's affection.
- 8:08But it's a process. And so when I begin my marriage,
- 8:14some of these things that I've learned, they
- 8:17stick, don't they? It's called the flesh. And
- 8:21so I thought to myself, not consciously, let's
- 8:25see. If I want to have a good marriage and I
- 8:28want the most important person to love me, accept
- 8:31me, and affirm me in ways that really matter
- 8:34to me, I'll figure out what she wants. And so,
- 8:38okay, a good husband is this, this, and this.
- 8:40I'll do that. Oh, I guess it's this too. And
- 8:42then I need to do this. And so I performed, performed,
- 8:44and worked, and worked, and worked, and worked.
- 8:46But an amazing thing happened. I was working
- 8:49in the relationship to get my wife to love me
- 8:51in ways that I thought were significant to me.
- 8:54And it was all built, came out of what? Came
- 8:56out of a hole. Came out of my need. It came out
- 8:58of manipulating and trying to do the right thing
- 9:01to push the right buttons to get someone to love
- 9:04me. I wasn't loving her unconditionally. I was
- 9:08loving her in a way that I hoped I'd get love
- 9:11back. The passage is Ephesians 5, 1 and 2. It
- 9:16says, therefore, be imitators of God as beloved
- 9:19children and walk in love just as Christ also
- 9:22loved you and gave himself up for us as an offering
- 9:25and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma. If
- 9:28you open your Bibles to this one, you've got
- 9:29to do a little work, okay? There's two commands
- 9:33there. But you've got to open your Bibles because
- 9:35the therefore means something happened in verse
- 9:3832 and 31 of chapter 4. As you turn there, you'll
- 9:44notice that The point is you can't impart what
- 9:48you don't possess. In other words, if you are
- 9:50not sensing, knowing, accepting the love that
- 9:54you already have from God, you can't give away
- 9:58love to others. You will be forced into some
- 10:01dysfunctional means of trying to manipulate,
- 10:05pretend, image cast to get people to affirm and
- 10:09to love you. But notice it says, therefore, be...
- 10:14Command one, be an imitator of God, a mimic.
- 10:17Well, what are you supposed to mimic? Look in
- 10:19your Bibles. What's verse 32 say? Go ahead, look
- 10:21in your Bibles. Therefore, be kind to one another,
- 10:24right? Tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
- 10:27just as God also in Christ has forgiven you.
- 10:30Well, what's verse 31? Skip up. Therefore, he
- 10:33says, you're this brand new person in relationships,
- 10:35do something. Let all malice and wrath and anger
- 10:37and slander and all these negative attitudes.
- 10:40What's it say? Put them away, but instead be
- 10:43kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving
- 10:45one another. And then the verse that we looked
- 10:48at is therefore be a mimic of God. You're to
- 10:51mimic God. Well, what's a mimic? A mimic, if
- 10:55one person does this, they do that. They do that,
- 10:57they do this. So what are we to mimic? We're
- 11:00to mimic. To be kind in relationships the way
- 11:03God is kind. We're to be tenderhearted with people
- 11:06the way God is tenderhearted. We're to forgive
- 11:08or release or let people go the way God has let
- 11:12us go and forgiven us based on Christ's work.
- 11:15And so you have a command that says, mimic God.
- 11:18And did you notice the second command? It says,
- 11:20walk in love. And then it describes what love
- 11:23looks like. This isn't an ooey -gooey feeling.
- 11:26How do you love? Just as Christ loved us. Well,
- 11:28how did he love us? A ooey -gooey feeling in
- 11:31his heart? Well, I hope there was some of that.
- 11:33But the Bible says the way he loved us, he gave
- 11:36himself up for us, a sacrifice, and he made his
- 11:40life a sacrifice he gave. He radically gave himself
- 11:46whether we responded or not. Now, here's what
- 11:49I want you to do. Between mimicking God, and
- 11:53walking in love, in parenthesis, and you could
- 11:55put a circle around it in your Bible, what's
- 11:58the little phrase between those? Mimic God, how?
- 12:02As a beloved child. Or literally, as a dearly
- 12:07loved child. Do you understand what the passage
- 12:10is teaching? He's saying, I want you to love
- 12:13in this impossible way. Forgive like God forgives.
- 12:16Be kind like God forgives. Be compassionate like
- 12:18God. And I want you to live this amazing, supernatural,
- 12:21sacrificial life toward others. But where's the
- 12:24resource? As a dearly loved child, you can't
- 12:30give away what you don't possess. My experience
- 12:34is the average Christian may intellectually know
- 12:36they're loved. The average Christian doesn't
- 12:38feel loved. You are significant. You are valuable.
- 12:44You are loved by God today apart from anything
- 12:47you could ever do as much as you will ever be
- 12:50loved. There's nothing you can do to diminish
- 12:52his love. There's nothing you can do to get more
- 12:54of his love. He loves you. And the basis of the
- 12:58Christian life is not, I'm going to read my Bible,
- 12:59I'm going to pray, I'm going to go on a mission
- 13:01trip, I'll try and be a good Christian, I'll
- 13:02try and have really good morals. Now, God, will
- 13:04you accept me? Do you love me? No, no, no, no,
- 13:06no. Completely opposite. It's you've already
- 13:09been forgiven. I love you. I care for you. The
- 13:12object of my affection, you are my child now.
- 13:16Walk in a manner worthy of who you already are.
- 13:18And you don't read your Bible to get brownie
- 13:20points. It's because you like being together.
- 13:23I mean, I don't go have coffee with my wife and
- 13:25say, okay, excuse me, dear, do we have the little
- 13:28box? Talked with wife today. Okay, the next little
- 13:32box. Oh, help clean up around the house. Now
- 13:35do you love me? I do that. Are you ready for
- 13:40this? I like her. I just want to be with her.
- 13:46She loves and accepts me. The Christian life
- 13:50is knowing, believing and feeling that you are
- 13:55so loved and accepted that now you can be a giver
- 13:59in relationships. And no relationship works if
- 14:05ultimately your desire is to get something from
- 14:08it. If you pretend to give affection or give
- 14:11it, but the string is, I will be affectionate
- 14:14if you do this. If you give gifts so that this
- 14:17will happen. If you play little games to manipulate
- 14:20one another, what happens is as soon as the other
- 14:22person isn't coming through, then what happens?
- 14:25You're hurt, you're rejected, you're angry. See,
- 14:28God's not asking you to be nice to your mate
- 14:30or nice to your kids or nice to your parents
- 14:32or be a good old Joe out there in the marketplace.
- 14:35He's asking you to mimic God. Treat them the
- 14:39way Jesus would treat them if he was walking
- 14:41around inside your body. And you do need to remember
- 14:43he is, right? He dwells in you. How in the world
- 14:47can you do that? You can only do it when you
- 14:50so accept, know, and believe that you are dearly,
- 14:54dearly loved by God. Otherwise, I jot in my notes,
- 15:00until I find my significant security and value
- 15:03from my relationship with Jesus, Every relationship
- 15:07will be a dysfunctional attempt to get love and
- 15:10acceptance from others through my performance,
- 15:12manipulation, looks, barter, or deceit. Can I
- 15:17tell you the greatest thing that will ever happen
- 15:19in any of your relationships is for you to really
- 15:23believe, not just with the head but from the
- 15:26heart, that you are so loved by God that you
- 15:31are now secure enough. to risk loving and caring
- 15:35and giving even if it doesn't come back. And
- 15:38so I've come to the point where, you know, you
- 15:40get up and talk in front of people. Do I want
- 15:42you to like me? Are you kidding me? Yeah. Do
- 15:44I want your approval? Yeah. Do I want my wife's
- 15:46approval? Yeah. Do I want my kids to think this
- 15:48and that about me? Of course. But if that's my
- 15:51motivation, guess what? I will pretend to be
- 15:54something I'll not. I won't say what God really
- 15:57wants me to say. So I've come to, it's okay to
- 15:59want that. I just don't need it. And you don't
- 16:03need it either. And there is no person that will
- 16:06ever come through for you 100 % of the time.
- 16:08There's no next job, no wonderful house, no amount
- 16:11of money, no accomplishment, no big goal that
- 16:14you can achieve that when you achieve it, you
- 16:15go, oh, now I'm a somebody. I'm significant.
- 16:19I'm value. You know what will happen? About three
- 16:22minutes after you achieve that or have that,
- 16:24you'll realize this doesn't deliver. I'm the
- 16:30cat chasing its tail. Well, I guess I just need
- 16:33a bigger thing or a new model or a prettier or
- 16:36a... And so here's the practice. Loving others'
- 16:41demand, I learn to know, accept, and feel God's
- 16:45unconditional love for me. You need to know,
- 16:48accept, and feel God's unconditional love for
- 16:52me. And if you feel like you're a little behind
- 16:54on this, I was probably a Christian at least
- 16:5710 years and a pastor. before I realized how
- 17:01much of my energy and my service to God was really
- 17:04about trying to gain his approval and people's
- 17:07approval rather than living out of being already
- 17:09loved. Let me give you some specific ways to
- 17:13go to work on this. The first one is, how do
- 17:16you know? Knowledge is an intellectual issue.
- 17:18Jot down, if you would, Romans 5 .8. Romans 5
- 17:22.8 says, while you were yet a sinner, Christ
- 17:26demonstrated his love for you and that he died
- 17:29for you. So, I mean, before you even join the
- 17:33family and those people who choose not to join
- 17:35the family, those people who God loves them,
- 17:37they won't receive the benefits of that love
- 17:40because of their pride and their unwillingness
- 17:43to surrender to his love. But isn't it good to
- 17:47remember to know God loves you apart from your
- 17:50performance? Now, it doesn't mean your performance
- 17:52isn't important. because that's the way I express
- 17:56my love to him, but you can't earn it. Well,
- 17:59then how do you accept God's love? How do you
- 18:02get where, just being the regular old normal
- 18:05people that we all are, how do you get where
- 18:08you begin to know and accept that you really
- 18:12are loved so you don't have to manipulate and
- 18:14perform and do all this stuff that, by the way,
- 18:16we will all do to some degree until we die, right?
- 18:22First of all, I think jot down, if you would,
- 18:24in your notes, Psalm 139. Here's what God thinks
- 18:27of you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
- 18:35God doesn't compare you to the person on the
- 18:37front of Cosmo or people. God doesn't compare
- 18:39you to someone on the front of Fortune 500. You
- 18:43are fearfully and wonderfully made. The all -knowing,
- 18:47all -powerful, all -wise God of all the universe,
- 18:50and we're just this one little tiny part of it,
- 18:52created you, and he loves just what he made.
- 18:58Like we say, oh, that's a Rembrandt. What a great
- 19:00work of art God says. He made you, and then he
- 19:03steps back and goes, you want to see greatness?
- 19:06There it is. It's the pinnacle of my creation.
- 19:09There's not another one like it in all the world.
- 19:11There's a DNA, there's eyes, there's a way of
- 19:13thinking, there's a background, there's a family.
- 19:15All this put together to bring me honor and glory.
- 19:17My image is stamped on this person. The color
- 19:21of eyes, the color of hair, the personality,
- 19:24the how your mind thinks, what you're good at,
- 19:25what you're not good at. He says, you are exactly
- 19:29what I wanted to make. But most of us spend most
- 19:33of our energy looking around what the world says.
- 19:35And trying to be like someone else or look like
- 19:38someone else or perform like someone else instead
- 19:40of saying, you ready? Try looking in the mirror
- 19:43this week. I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
- 19:46I look exactly how God wanted me to look. God's
- 19:50standard of beauty and value and significance
- 19:52is the only one that matters. Tell you what,
- 19:55you begin to renew your mind. I started writing
- 19:59these things on cards and that verse Psalm 139,
- 20:02I began to pray them back to God. Because see,
- 20:05in my mind, the people that are wonderfully made
- 20:08are 6 '6 and can jump a lot higher than me, okay?
- 20:11All my life. You know, it's people who could
- 20:15do this. Where did I get all that? Until I came
- 20:19to the point where, are you ready? Until you
- 20:21like you, you can't love other people. And by
- 20:25like, I don't mean that you're content with,
- 20:26you know, behavior or issues that you know are
- 20:28ungodly. I mean where you say, you know something?
- 20:32I have these strengths and I have these weaknesses,
- 20:34and this is the package that God made. And the
- 20:38strengths are to build confidence and a part
- 20:40of God's glory, and the weaknesses are so that
- 20:42I'm always dependent on other people and realize
- 20:45that I can't make this little world by myself.
- 20:47I can never make it without others. The second
- 20:50way I think you get a grasp of how loved you
- 20:52are is by the price or your value to God. I mean,
- 20:57if we lined up, can you imagine? What if we lined
- 20:59up everyone on this back wall, every single person,
- 21:02and then we brought in a multi -multi -billionaire,
- 21:05and we said, you can only choose one person,
- 21:08and you have to pay $1 billion for this one person.
- 21:12And when you pay that, you can have them, and
- 21:15they're yours. And what if he looked and looked
- 21:17and looked and did research and did all kind
- 21:19of things and looked at everything that everyone
- 21:21in this whole room brought, and then he said,
- 21:23you, $1 billion for you. Or he said, you. Or
- 21:26he said, you. And then all of us are here, and
- 21:29he writes out a check for $1 billion, and you
- 21:32step out. Would you not feel pretty good about
- 21:34yourself? Huh? Jot down, would you, 1 Corinthians
- 21:406, 19 and 20. God didn't pay a billion dollars
- 21:44for you. Do you not know that you are not your
- 21:50own, that your body is the temple of the Holy
- 21:54Spirit? that you have been purchased with a price.
- 22:01Jesus, all -knowing, all -powerful, looking down
- 22:06all the corridors of all time and eternity, said,
- 22:10when your name comes up on the computer screen
- 22:13of the eternal Godhead, I'll pay the blood of
- 22:18my son for the person sitting in your seat. That's
- 22:23how much you matter. I mean, you know, if we
- 22:26have a little diamond and it costs $1 ,000, we
- 22:28say it's worth something. If we have a big diamond
- 22:31and it costs a million dollars, we say it's worth
- 22:32a lot more. Why? Because of the cost. See, part
- 22:37of us, we just need to begin to grasp how valuable
- 22:42we are because of who made us and how valuable
- 22:45we are because we've been purchased. And then
- 22:48I think we need to practically not just know,
- 22:50not just accept, But my journey has been, how
- 22:54do you feel? How do you get that from here to
- 22:57here? And as I read Scripture, for the last 30
- 23:03years, I took this little book on the character
- 23:06of God, and there's lots of chapters. It's a
- 23:08book on God's character, the knowledge of the
- 23:10holy bitoser. But I've read the goodness of God
- 23:14probably 10 times more, and on the love of God
- 23:1710 times more than any chapter in this book for
- 23:1930 years. In some stages for a decade at a time,
- 23:22I read at least a chapter a week or more. And
- 23:25then I would write on a card a little quote and
- 23:28a passage. And the only way I could learn...
- 23:31to get it from my head to my heart, was to take
- 23:34that truth and pray it to God and ask him to
- 23:37make real in my heart what is true and help me
- 23:40to feel it. And then I learned from scripture
- 23:42from David that if I would sing that and share
- 23:45that with God and rejoice over it, I would begin
- 23:48to emotionally experience it. What if you said
- 23:51to yourself as your eyes open in the morning,
- 23:54you could hear the Lord saying, Zephaniah 3 .17,
- 23:57I am the Lord your God. I am with you. I will
- 24:03protect you and cover you with my love. I rejoice
- 24:07over you with singing. What if God wasn't down
- 24:11on you? What if he really likes you? What if
- 24:13he has a great plan for you? And what if you
- 24:16are so significant and valuable already that
- 24:20what other people think matters, but it doesn't
- 24:24dictate who you are? You see, you can't impart.
- 24:29which you don't possess. And as you listen to
- 24:32the Apostle Paul building the church, what did
- 24:34he pray? Chapter 1, I pray that the eyes of their
- 24:37heart might be enlightened, that they might grasp
- 24:39or understand the strength of your power, the
- 24:42power of Christ's resurrection dwelling in them.
- 24:45And then in chapter 3, he says, I bow my knee
- 24:47with all the family of God that you might be
- 24:50strengthened in your inner man so you could comprehend
- 24:52beyond... Just intellectual aspects. What is
- 24:55the height and depth and length and breadth?
- 24:57And to know, and the word is by way of experience,
- 25:00God's love for you. Having been deeply rooted
- 25:04and grounded in faith. See, I'll tell you what.
- 25:09Relationships begin with really understanding,
- 25:11hey, it's all about God's way of doing it. Accepting
- 25:14yourself and one another. We're all a bunch of
- 25:18desperately insecure people. that people really
- 25:20do behave in ways that make sense to them, but
- 25:22not usually to us. And that I can't give away,
- 25:25I just can't give away what I don't have. And
- 25:29maybe the greatest thing I could do for every
- 25:31relationship is to know, accept, and believe,
- 25:35and to feel that I am loved for who I am apart
- 25:39from any performance today by the eternal God
- 25:43of the universe. And then kind of take the pressure
- 25:46off of... trying to impress you all as much I
- 25:48try to impress you and try and look or do different
- 25:51things that get your affirmation and just kind
- 25:54of say, you know, Lord, you know, if they like
- 25:57you today, they kind of hate you tomorrow. That
- 25:59was the way with you, right? You know, they're
- 26:01cheering one day, crucifying you three days later.
- 26:04There was something to the heart of Christ who
- 26:06said he didn't entrust himself to people. We're
- 26:09all a bunch of fallen human beings, but you're
- 26:12valuable. And he wants you to be a giver. And
- 26:16He loves you just the way you are. You're listening

- 28:02Chip Ingram. As we close today's program, I would
- 28:05just bring your mind back to those prayers that
- 28:10I quoted by the Apostle Paul. Isn't it interesting?
- 28:13These people living in such a difficult time
- 28:16and in a difficult place that what he prays for
- 28:19them is that they would be able to grasp. that
- 28:22they would understand, not just with their mind,
- 28:24but with their heart. In fact, he prays that
- 28:26beyond their human comprehension, that we would
- 28:31understand and grasp and feel and experience
- 28:34the love of God. Could I just ask you to just
- 28:37lean back and think of how you would think differently
- 28:41and relate differently if you could hear in your
- 28:44heart God saying, hey, today, I'm with you no
- 28:48matter what. Hey, I'm not down on you. I love
- 28:52you. I'm for you. What if you believe just even
- 28:56as you and I are talking right now that, you
- 28:59know, today is a part of an amazing and a great
- 29:02plan that God has for my life. And he literally
- 29:06loves me and just wants me to kind of have my
- 29:09spiritual antenna up and listen to him and take
- 29:12the next step that he shows me so he could give
- 29:14me the very, very best in life. You see, when
- 29:18you begin to internalize how lavishly God loves
- 29:21you, only then can you begin to pass it on. I
- 29:26can't imitate unconditional kindness and love
- 29:29and forgiveness unless I've experienced that.
- 29:32And so what we're really talking about here is
- 29:34you saying to the Lord, Lord, will you help me
- 29:38grasp and understand how much you love me? And
- 29:42then, you know, it's not just some ooey -gooey
- 29:44feeling. It's getting into the scriptures. It's
- 29:47trusting the promise that draw near to God and
- 29:50he'll draw near to you. It's arranging your life
- 29:54where you actually experience God's love. Because
- 29:59there are some relationships that are always
- 30:01going to be hard. And you cannot give away what
- 30:04you don't possess. Unconditional love and forgiveness
- 30:08for some people in your life. I call them hard
- 30:12relationships. can only be achieved when you
- 30:16receive that same love. That's Chip Ingram and
- 30:19the end of today's program. Join us next time
- 30:22as we continue our series, Caring Enough to Connect,
