- 0:03Douglas: Doug Has Questions.
- 0:04Douglas: I was born and raised in Haines, Alaska with two former educators' parents.
- 0:08Douglas: I got out of education, went into retail, and my sister and I grew up in a retail store that now includes clothing, groceries, and sporting goods.
- 0:17Douglas: Over the years, had a chance to meet people from a variety of different backgrounds, and I have a lot of questions for them.
- 0:23Douglas: Now I get to ask them.
- 0:25Douglas: Welcome to this episode of Doug Has Questions.
- 0:27Douglas: Today my guest is Kay Dunning.
- 0:30Douglas: Hi, Kay.
- 0:31Kay Dunning: Hi, Doug.
- 0:32Kay Dunning: How are you?
- 0:32Douglas: I'm doing great.
- 0:33Douglas: Before I I usually forget this anymore, but you're you now you and Rick can have matching mugs.
- 0:40Douglas: So I don't know if I don't know if you want to write your name on there so you make sure he's not using his and you're using his.
- 0:46Kay Dunning: He puts coffee in his.
- 0:47Kay Dunning: I don't allow coffee in my coffee.
- 0:49Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 0:49Douglas: You're gonna figure out a way to that's gonna be on you guys to figure that out.
- 0:53Kay Dunning: Uh I'll just take them both.
- 0:55Douglas: Okay.
- 0:56Douglas: It solves all the problems.
- 0:58Douglas: Perfect.
- 1:00Douglas: So Kay, start at the beginning.
- 1:03Kay Dunning: Oh my goodness.
- 1:04Douglas: What actually we're talking about this before we just started.
- 1:07Douglas: Do you want to start with your parents first?
- 1:09Douglas: Because your dad was here, you said at I think 18 with the army.
- 1:12Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:13Douglas: We want to start there and then work my way forward?
- 1:15Douglas: Work your way forward from there.
- 1:17Kay Dunning: That sounds like a good place to start because uh kind of gets of how how I came to be, I guess.
- 1:24Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 1:25Kay Dunning: Um yeah, my dad uh grew up in Wisconsin and um he when he was 18 graduated high school, he went into the army, and he and his buddy got their orders of where they were supposed to go.
- 1:39Kay Dunning: He was supposed to go to Germany, his buddy was supposed to come to Alaska.
- 1:43Kay Dunning: Well, my dad had always wanted to come up here, and his buddy had always wanted to go to Germany.
- 1:48Kay Dunning: So somehow his buddy's dad had enough poll to get their orders switched.
- 1:53Kay Dunning: Really?
- 1:53Kay Dunning: That's how my dad ended up here out at the tank farm um when he was 18 years old, 18, 19 years old, right in there.
- 2:01Douglas: So he was so his posting in the army was the tank farm.
- 2:05Kay Dunning: Yes, to the best of my knowledge, that that's what I understand, yes.
- 2:08Kay Dunning: And, so that's where he stayed.
- 2:11Douglas: He was I always thought that was kind of civilian, because that was always it was pretty much shutting down by the time I got old enough to recognize there's something going on out there.
- 2:18Kay Dunning: In the 70s, yeah.
- 2:19Douglas: Yeah, but I always thought it was kind of a civilian workforce, but he was there as an actual military uniform military.
- 2:26Kay Dunning: Yep, and he was a uh petroleum lab technician out there.
- 2:29Kay Dunning: Okay, so they took, you know, the the fuel that came into town and shipped that up to uh Fairbanks.
- 2:36Douglas: Yeah, so for the people that aren't familiar with the tank farm, it was a fuel depot out Lutak that the military set up after World War II to ship to the military installations in Fairbanks.
- 2:47Douglas: Fuel up the pipeline.
- 2:48Douglas: So they had the big tanks here and then they would pump it up to uh Fairbanks through the pipeline.
- 2:53Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:54Douglas: So he was a he was a what?
- 2:55Douglas: A lab technician lab technician.
- 2:57Douglas: What the heck what the heck does do you know what a petroleum lab technician does?
- 3:01Kay Dunning: Uh he you know, I don't know if he um measured what that was in the tanks and and and the fuel, I don't know, dense his I don't know anything about that part of it.
- 3:11Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 3:12Kay Dunning: I I honestly don't know.
- 3:14Douglas: So what what year was that that he came up here?
- 3:17Kay Dunning: 1953.
- 3:19Douglas: 1953.
- 3:20Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 3:21Douglas: And did he s did he stay throughout his military service?
- 3:26Douglas: It was all here in Haines.
- 3:28Kay Dunning: Yep, all of it was here.
- 3:29Kay Dunning: Really?
- 3:30Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 3:31Douglas: Usually they send him all over the place.
- 3:33Kay Dunning: Right, and that was during the Korean conflict.
- 3:35Kay Dunning: Um so that's that's when yeah, that's the um era that he was in.
- 3:39Douglas: That he was here during Korea.
- 3:41Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 3:41Kay Dunning: Wow.
- 3:41Kay Dunning: And then my mom so is that just sorry, I didn't know.
- 3:45Kay Dunning: Oh no, that's okay.
- 3:46Douglas: Um so is he just like a four-year enlistment and then he was done, and then he did he keep going after that?
- 3:52Kay Dunning: I think he was the four years because um by the time I was old enough to know anything about that stuff, he was a civil servant, which means he had um he was out of the army but hired back as a um civilian servant.
- 4:06Douglas: He was still working at the tank farm.
- 4:08Kay Dunning: And that's where your civilian stuff stuff came in.
- 4:10Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:11Kay Dunning: He worked under um Ray Carter, whose daughter Simone still lives here in town.
- 4:16Douglas: Okay.
- 4:17Kay Dunning: So yeah.
- 4:18Kay Dunning: That gives me a that gives me a totally different I never yeah.
- 4:24Kay Dunning: Do you remember the tanks out there?
- 4:26Douglas: Oh, absolutely.
- 4:27Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:27Kay Dunning: They would I mean it's like when the ferry would come by, it's like, oh, we're almost home.
- 4:30Douglas: We're almost at the dock because the tanks were the and I think most of us that grew up in that area, we still call it the tank farm.
- 4:36Kay Dunning: Oh, yeah.
- 4:37Douglas: And I tell people, you know, just the beach in front of the tank farm, and they look at me like I've lost my mind.
- 4:43Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 4:44Douglas: Well, there used to be these big, if you can imagine, there's these big white fuel tanks out there.
- 4:48Douglas: Yeah that is quite obvious that that was the tank farm.
- 4:51Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 4:52Douglas: But when you go out there, you d there's no sign of it now.
- 4:55Kay Dunning: No, no.
- 4:55Kay Dunning: That well, and there used to be tanks over um by the fort down at the base down there.
- 5:01Kay Dunning: Dave Blackhead's.
- 5:02Douglas: Two different places, right across from the post office and out across from CIA (Chilkoot Indian Association), there's tanks down there too for two different places for bringing petroleum in.
- 5:09Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 5:09Douglas: And now it all comes in out above Loutak Dock.
- 5:12Kay Dunning: Is that oh okay, is that where it is now?
- 5:13Douglas: Yeah, up on the hill.
- 5:14Douglas: If you look if as you're driving past the ferry terminal before you get to the entrance to Lutak Dock, if you look to the left, there's the whole line of pipes going up the hill.
- 5:22Kay Dunning: I've seen the pipes.
- 5:23Kay Dunning: I didn't know, okay, I didn't know that's the thing.
- 5:25Douglas: Yeah, I think that was late 80s that they put those in.
- 5:27Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 5:28Douglas: And developed the tank.
- 5:29Douglas: So there's a smaller tank farm up there, obviously.
- 5:32Douglas: But that's yeah.
- 5:33Douglas: And so the the depot for all of that for off the dock, you can see where there's the the infrastructure right next to the highway off the dock.
- 5:43Douglas: And so when it comes in off the fuel barges, they pump it up to the top of the hill.
- 5:48Douglas: Oh, and then it comes back down and they load the trucks.
- 5:50Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 5:51Kay Dunning: I had no idea that's how they did it now.
- 5:53Douglas: You're gonna ask Rick to go for a ride out Lutak now, aren't you, to see what all this is about.
- 5:57Douglas: Yes, yes, I am.
- 6:00Kay Dunning: Maybe we can uh climb up there.
- 6:02Douglas: There's actually a road you can drive up there.
- 6:04Douglas: Actually, I don't think you can drive that.
- 6:06Douglas: I was gonna say it's probably not legal to do that.
- 6:08Douglas: It's a fairly it's a fairly steep road.
- 6:11Kay Dunning: Yeah, well I'm I'm gonna take your word for it.
- 6:13Douglas: But i isn't it crazy though that you can drive pie stuff and not recognize or just realize what it is and just like it's there.
- 6:21Kay Dunning: Yeah, I I have seen those pipes you've talked about because I just uh we were out there a couple days ago and I was like, huh, well, I don't know what those are for, but sure.
- 6:28Douglas: It's all your heating fuel and gas goes up to the top of the hill.
- 6:31Douglas: Good to know.
- 6:32Douglas: Good to know.
- 6:33Douglas: They got several big tanks up there to hold it all.
- 6:36Kay Dunning: Probably can't see those from like the toxinic trail or anything, can you?
- 6:39Douglas: I don't think so.
- 6:40Douglas: Nope, not quite.
- 6:42Kay Dunning: It's nice, they're not quite as big and bold as the uh not as the old tank farm.
- 6:46Douglas: They're much much smaller carrying capacity than the old tank farm.
- 6:50Kay Dunning: Well, they're for different purposes.
- 6:52Douglas: For different purposes, absolutely.
- 6:54Douglas: So, with your dad working at the tank farm, how did he meet your mom here in Haines?
- 6:59Kay Dunning: So my mom was an army brat, and she grew up, um, she spent time up in Valdez, in Wrangell, and in Ketchikan as a as a child.
- 7:11Douglas: Um, what was the military doing in Wrangle?
- 7:15Kay Dunning: You know, I don't know exactly, but my my grandpa, I I verified this with my brother, and I'm like, isn't this what grandpa used to do?
- 7:21Kay Dunning: Because we never we never knew him.
- 7:23Kay Dunning: Uh-huh.
- 7:23Kay Dunning: Um, he was with the um Army Signal Corps.
- 7:27Douglas: Okay.
- 7:28Kay Dunning: And he was a radio operator.
- 7:29Kay Dunning: And so I don't know what he was doing in Wrangle, but something with the military.
- 7:36Kay Dunning: Um, and when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, um he got shipped out to ADAC, and the families all get got sent back down to she they happened to be from Washington, Seattle area, so they all got shipped down there.
- 7:53Douglas: Um your grandfather was on Adak?
- 7:55Douglas: Like when the Japanese inv because they were close to taking Adak, weren't they?
- 8:00Kay Dunning: I believe so, but I you know, they got a couple of the illusions.
- 8:05Douglas: I can't remember which of the islands, but Attu was one of them.
- 8:09Kay Dunning: And ADAC, I think, yeah, they came close, but I don't think they I mean I don't know exactly what you know was happening when he was there.
- 8:19Douglas: At two they did, but yeah, I can't remember if they finally got now now.
- 8:23Douglas: I'm gonna have to do research.
- 8:24Douglas: See?
- 8:24Douglas: I'm gonna have to go back.
- 8:25Douglas: I should know this stuff.
- 8:26Kay Dunning: Bring this history up.
- 8:27Kay Dunning: Well, let me know when you find out.
- 8:28Kay Dunning: When I find out, I'll let you know.
- 8:30Kay Dunning: I'll send you a channel.
- 8:30Kay Dunning: You know who we need to check with is is my daughter Ryan.
- 8:33Kay Dunning: She she is such a uh um genealogy buff and stuff like that.
- 8:38Kay Dunning: She knows all that stuff that's she knows the whole family history.
- 8:41Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah, she does.
- 8:42Kay Dunning: Yeah, better than I do.
- 8:44Douglas: Phone a phone phone a daughter.
- 8:45Douglas: Let's go.
- 8:46Douglas: Phone a daughter here.
- 8:47Douglas: We need Ryan to let us know what went on.
- 8:50Kay Dunning: Um, yeah, so um so my mom, like I said, spent her time up here and um really loved it.
- 8:56Kay Dunning: Um and she they must have come back up to Ketchcan when she was in high school because she was there her sophomore year, I think, of high school.
- 9:03Kay Dunning: Um the rest of it was when she was younger.
- 9:06Kay Dunning: And um so she went back to Seattle and then um went on to graduate from Roosevelt High School in Seattle area.
- 9:15Kay Dunning: And she went off to college, she went to Whitman, um what was it, Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.
- 9:22Kay Dunning: Whitworth?
- 9:24Douglas: Whitworth, I think.
- 9:25Kay Dunning: Um for a year and she came back because my grandpa, well, he was um I don't know what happened exactly, uh, but he got hit by a snowball.
- 9:36Kay Dunning: Um there was a snowball fight with you know some of the um um army friends, and he got hit in the back of the head and he ended up coming south, and as a result of that injury, they discovered that he had a brain tumor.
- 9:50Kay Dunning: And that's where he ultimately passed away from when she was I think she was about 19 when she when he passed away.
- 9:59Kay Dunning: So she left um Whitworth and came back over to Seattle and went to the University of Washington to help take care of my grandpa while while he was um sick.
- 10:09Douglas: Good choice.
- 10:09Douglas: Good good good school.
- 10:12Kay Dunning: Is that is that where you went?
- 10:13Douglas: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:14Douglas: There might be some personal bias in that decision.
- 10:17Douglas: But heard that comment.
- 10:19Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:20Douglas: Good choice.
- 10:20Douglas: Um, but then she um That's crazy though that he found out he had a brain tumor because he got hit with a snowball.
- 10:27Douglas: Got injured in a snowball fight.
- 10:29Kay Dunning: Yes, yes.
- 10:30Kay Dunning: Um and it's just one of those those things that um I don't know if you remember can I say names?
- 10:36Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 10:36Kay Dunning: The Gullifirds.
- 10:37Kay Dunning: Oh, absolutely.
- 10:38Kay Dunning: Jimmy Gulliford.
- 10:39Kay Dunning: Oh, yeah.
- 10:39Kay Dunning: Uh Jimmy had an injury from a sport, and um as a result of that find out.
- 10:45Kay Dunning: When we were in sixth grade.
- 10:46Kay Dunning: Yeah, about his cancer that way, same same way.
- 10:48Kay Dunning: So it's it's God works in mysterious ways, I think.
- 10:53Douglas: So um, but yeah, so she Jimmy Jimmy's one of those people that I admire so much just looking at our whole time through school battling cancer.
- 11:03Douglas: And now he's he's still with us doing great.
- 11:06Douglas: I just phenomenal.
- 11:08Kay Dunning: Do you know even where he is?
- 11:09Douglas: I have no idea where he is.
- 11:10Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 11:11Kay Dunning: Her?
- 11:11Kay Dunning: Lisa, where is he?
- 11:12Kay Dunning: Where is he?
- 11:13Kay Dunning: Tony.
- 11:14Douglas: No, I haven't I haven't seen him.
- 11:15Douglas: I think the last when I was in at UW, him and Damon Hoffman came and visited one time.
- 11:21Douglas: Oh and I think that was the last time I've seen Jim.
- 11:23Kay Dunning: I always thought that was an amazing story of how that transpired.
- 11:27Kay Dunning: So yeah, so she graduated college and she up, she was a teacher, or I mean, had her um di degree for teaching, but she also loved aviation.
- 11:39Kay Dunning: She took her very first airplane ride um in Valdez when she was a little girl.
- 11:43Kay Dunning: Somebody came up and said, Hey, you want to go for a ride?
- 11:46Kay Dunning: She didn't ask my grammar or anything.
- 11:48Kay Dunning: She just went to the airport.
- 11:48Kay Dunning: She's like bailed.
- 11:49Kay Dunning: She went to the airport.
- 11:50Kay Dunning: She was, you know, less than 10 years old.
- 11:53Douglas: Um and was this somebody she knew or it was it was somebody?
- 11:59Kay Dunning: It's Alaska.
- 12:01Douglas: Not just the van pulling up and saying, You want some candy, kid?
- 12:04Douglas: Let's go for a ride in the airplane.
- 12:07Douglas: Let's go.
- 12:07Kay Dunning: It's safe, little girl.
- 12:09Douglas: It's safe.
- 12:10Kay Dunning: Here we go.
- 12:11Kay Dunning: So she went up there and fell in love with aviation.
- 12:14Kay Dunning: So um, I as I was cleaning out some of her stuff um a couple years ago, I I had heard this story, but she had a letter from Pan Am.
- 12:23Kay Dunning: She'd applied to be a flight attendant, and she was offered the job if she um got her teeth fixed because they were um they were crooked and a little bit crooked, and then they were um yellow because as a child she do you know Rh negative, the Rh positive, Rh negative.
- 12:43Douglas: I've heard of it.
- 12:44Douglas: I don't know the specifics of it.
- 12:46Kay Dunning: If a parent has um like a positive blood type and the child has negative, um, it develops antibodies in a in the mom's body.
- 12:55Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 12:55Kay Dunning: So the next child, if that same situation occurs, the antibodies attack the um opposite blood type.
- 13:02Kay Dunning: And so that was the case with my mom.
- 13:05Kay Dunning: Her older sister and my grandma had different blood types.
- 13:08Kay Dunning: My grandma developed these antibodies, and so my mom um her blood type was different, also, and so sh her blood, she was attacked by it.
- 13:18Kay Dunning: So she was sickly until she was about seven years old.
- 13:21Kay Dunning: Um, so so now you now you get something called a rogam shot and it takes care of that.
- 13:28Kay Dunning: Takes care of that, but um, but that caused her teeth to not develop properly.
- 13:32Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 13:33Douglas: And so she's like, So she had to get teeth whitened and straightened in order if she wanted to be on PNM.
- 13:38Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:39Douglas: How are they whitening teeth in the 50s?
- 13:41Douglas: I don't think that the crest whitened.
- 13:43Kay Dunning: I don't know exactly what she was gonna do.
- 13:45Kay Dunning: I don't that one I don't know.
- 13:47Kay Dunning: But she also got um got told about a job up here in Haines um as a teacher, and she's like, I'm going home.
- 13:55Kay Dunning: And so she decided Alaska was her home.
- 13:58Kay Dunning: She packed her stuff up, got on a steamership, came up here, and that was in 1956.
- 14:05Douglas: 1956, she sets foot in Haines.
- 14:07Kay Dunning: She sets foot in Haines, and my dad happened to be told to go to the airport to pick up or to to the boat to pick up this young lady that was coming in as a teacher.
- 14:19Kay Dunning: And so he meets her, he takes her to her apartment, which was over at the Schnobel apartments, which is Heisler Hardware, now Talias.
- 14:27Kay Dunning: Talia's, yeah.
- 14:28Kay Dunning: Um, and drops her off, takes her stuff up, and they don't see each other really for a year.
- 14:33Kay Dunning: Now he will tell you that, or he would have told told you that when he saw her, he decided he was gonna marry her that very day.
- 14:42Kay Dunning: That was that was it.
- 14:43Kay Dunning: So a year later, they meet while doing um or remeet during um Arsenic and Old Lace.
- 14:50Douglas: Um what arsenic?
- 14:52Kay Dunning: Arsenic and Old Lace, it's a play.
- 14:54Douglas: Okay, I was gonna say, what the heck are they playing around with?
- 14:58Kay Dunning: I'm sorry, no.
- 14:59Kay Dunning: It's a it's a play.
- 15:00Kay Dunning: They were both uh involved with the uh Lincolnal community players.
- 15:03Douglas: And so they were both in the play.
- 15:05Kay Dunning: Mm-hmm.
- 15:06Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 15:07Kay Dunning: And so they got together after a cast party, and uh another year later they were married in 1958.
- 15:16Douglas: So if you did if your dad thought on the first meeting with her that he's gonna marry her, why did it what that's really taking your time there, taking a year before you see her again.
- 15:28Kay Dunning: Did you know my mom?
- 15:29Kay Dunning: She was a little on the stubborn side at times.
- 15:30Kay Dunning: Well, very independent.
- 15:32Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 15:32Douglas: But at the same time, I mean, he we wasn't even trying.
- 15:36Kay Dunning: Well, she was dating some other guys in town too.
- 15:38Douglas: Okay.
- 15:38Kay Dunning: She had some some guys that yeah.
- 15:40Kay Dunning: Yeah, some that you would know, and and uh Okay.
- 15:43Kay Dunning: Nothing wrong with that.
- 15:45Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 15:45Kay Dunning: So she was being very active in her social life and stuff, so but they got they got married and um, like I said, 1958, and then had my brother in 61.
- 15:57Kay Dunning: Yeah, and then I came along in 65.
- 16:00Douglas: Yeah.
- 16:01Douglas: So and did you guys grow up in the house in Port Chilkoot?
- 16:05Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 16:05Douglas: So that's from a child, that's that was your home in Haines.
- 16:09Kay Dunning: Yeah, my brother was born in Seattle, so I'm the only one in my my immediate family that's uh true Alaskan claims.
- 16:14Douglas: True Alaskan.
- 16:15Douglas: Were you born at the Hume old Human Resources Clinic?
- 16:18Kay Dunning: No, uh they weren't delivering babies then.
- 16:21Kay Dunning: Uh I was in Juneau.
- 16:23Douglas: You're in Juneau?
- 16:23Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 16:23Kay Dunning: Or maybe they were, and for whatever reason my mom chose to go to Juneau.
- 16:27Kay Dunning: She'd had some some issues with that, so that's probably why.
- 16:30Kay Dunning: So I was four days old when I moved to Haines.
- 16:32Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 16:33Douglas: I got you beat.
- 16:35Douglas: I was born at the Human Resources Building.
- 16:38Kay Dunning: Human Resources Building.
- 16:39Douglas: It was called the Wells the Preschool Building right below the right next right below the swamp.
- 16:43Kay Dunning: Yeah, it's it's the the gray clinic.
- 16:45Douglas: Yeah.
- 16:45Douglas: Yeah, the old clinic before Stan built the new one.
- 16:48Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah, I I remember that one well.
- 16:51Kay Dunning: It was kind of spooky.
- 16:53Douglas: Well, I uh I always thought I was born in the clinic.
- 16:57Kay Dunning: Oh, did you really?
- 16:58Douglas: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 16:59Douglas: I was told I was born in Haines.
- 17:00Douglas: I was by the time I was old enough to know anything, that's the clinic that we went to.
- 17:04Douglas: That's and so I always thought it was there, and I forget how old I was.
- 17:07Douglas: My mom and dad were like, no, you're born over there.
- 17:10Douglas: I was like, why would you give birth there?
- 17:13Douglas: The clinic's over here.
- 17:15Douglas: Like, well, it used to be over there.
- 17:18Kay Dunning: Yeah, things move in this town.
- 17:19Kay Dunning: Things move in this town.
- 17:20Kay Dunning: The police department, you know, the post office.
- 17:23Douglas: Several different homes for each of them.
- 17:25Kay Dunning: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:26Douglas: It's about ready to move again, the clinic.
- 17:28Kay Dunning: Oh, that's right.
- 17:28Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah, it is.
- 17:29Kay Dunning: I wonder what we'll go in there.
- 17:31Kay Dunning: Hmm.
- 17:32Kay Dunning: We'll have to find something new purpose for that.
- 17:35Douglas: Should we put that on your to-do list?
- 17:38Kay Dunning: Oh, on my docket.
- 17:39Douglas: Should we put that on Kay's docket?
- 17:40Douglas: Finding a new home for that.
- 17:41Douglas: Wait, didn't you sign up to be the new uh, you know, aren't you on the ballot for the well, yeah, but that doesn't sound like so that's that sounds like a private enterprise thing that should happen that somebody should reach out to search and see what their plans are.
- 17:53Douglas: So we could put that on.
- 17:54Kay Dunning: Put it on Tom Morphe.
- 17:55Kay Dunning: He'll have time.
- 17:55Douglas: Tom will have time.
- 17:56Douglas: We'll let Tom take care of it.
- 17:58Douglas: You're up, Tom.
- 18:00Douglas: So what what are your early memories then of growing up in the fort with you and your brother?
- 18:07Kay Dunning: Um, you know, I I remember actually before that my parents added on the garage onto our house, it, you know, the exterior was were our little coat porches.
- 18:19Kay Dunning: Um I remember playing with Danny Twiliger and David Twiliger.
- 18:24Kay Dunning: And uh my brother taking piano lessons from Mrs.
- 18:29Kay Dunning: Twiliger.
- 18:30Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 18:31Kay Dunning: Um I'm not gonna say first names because I sometimes I don't remember all the first names.
- 18:36Kay Dunning: Um let's see, what else?
- 18:38Kay Dunning: Lisa Strew or Lisa Flory and I they live they lived in so on Soapsoad Alley, just kitty corner from our house where Michael Marks lives now.
- 18:50Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 18:51Kay Dunning: And um Helen would watch me in um during the day when my mom was teaching.
- 18:56Kay Dunning: And so I remember Lisa and I having chicken pox together and taking um a bath in the big claw foot tub at the top of these, at the top of the stairs.
- 19:07Kay Dunning: And just a couple years ago I got to walk in there and and uh Lori and Michael um were showing me around.
- 19:14Kay Dunning: I'm like, is there still a claw foot tub upstairs?
- 19:16Kay Dunning: Is there still a bathroom up there?
- 19:18Kay Dunning: Like, do I remember it correctly?
- 19:19Kay Dunning: And they're like, yep, here it is, the original one.
- 19:21Kay Dunning: It's still there.
- 19:22Kay Dunning: It's still there.
- 19:23Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:23Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 19:24Kay Dunning: So um, and then I I remember snowmobiling around in the in the parade ground.
- 19:31Kay Dunning: Parade grounds, yeah, with um the sages.
- 19:34Kay Dunning: And Joanne Ewing was over there.
- 19:37Kay Dunning: And let's see who else there was um there was a lot of there were some um kids and families that lived up on the top on Officers Row that rented out houses and stuff.
- 19:47Kay Dunning: So it was a really active, active area.
- 19:51Kay Dunning: I remember running up and down the totem poles as a kid when they would be carving them out in the room.
- 19:56Douglas: Yeah, because you're right next to Alaska Indian Arts.
- 19:58Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:59Kay Dunning: Um and Danny and I would um Danny Tulliger and I would go up, there was the um shop that Tresham had.
- 20:08Kay Dunning: That's been a gift shop for as long as I can remember.
- 20:12Kay Dunning: And tourists would come walking down that road, you know, the dirt road, and they would lose money.
- 20:18Kay Dunning: And Danny and I would climb underneath that as going up the steps.
- 20:22Kay Dunning: I don't know how it happened, but Danny and I would go up or underneath the uh steps and under the building, and we'd find find coins and and money under there.
- 20:32Douglas: I used to pocket it.
- 20:33Douglas: I used to climb under the porch of the store all the time in the summertime.
- 20:37Kay Dunning: Did you find money?
- 20:38Douglas: Oh, absolutely.
- 20:38Douglas: That's why I kept going under there.
- 20:40Douglas: It's just dirty and disgusting as all get out, but do you find money?
- 20:44Kay Dunning: There's money to be had down there.
- 20:45Kay Dunning: Exactly.
- 20:46Kay Dunning: Um I don't know if you remember in the fort they had uh right by that gift shop, um, they had two caches.
- 20:53Kay Dunning: One was sat on the ground and one was up in the one was up higher.
- 20:57Kay Dunning: Yeah, and so we would climb up in that one, but the one on the ground we would go in that was like a little fort.
- 21:02Kay Dunning: And I remember coming out one time and I stood up and the roof extended out a couple feet past the entrance, and I stood up into it and broke my first broke my first tooth.
- 21:13Kay Dunning: So um, yeah, the tribal house playing up in that.
- 21:19Kay Dunning: It was it was a really good place to grow up.
- 21:23Douglas: Did you ever go up to the old the water reservoir and swim in that as a kid?
- 21:26Kay Dunning: Thank you.
- 21:27Kay Dunning: Yes, I remember that, and I have these terrifying nightmares still to this day of being a little kid trying to go down in it.
- 21:35Kay Dunning: Do you remember did it have steps?
- 21:37Douglas: I don't remember.
- 21:38Douglas: I went up there once again, like like you're saying, as a little kid.
- 21:41Douglas: Yeah.
- 21:41Douglas: Everybody's gonna go swimming in the reservoir, and I was like, oh, okay.
- 21:45Douglas: And going there, and it just looks sketchy as I'll get out.
- 21:49Douglas: Yeah.
- 21:49Douglas: As a kid, I was like, I don't know if I want to go swimming in here.
- 21:53Douglas: And I don't know how long we were there.
- 21:55Douglas: I don't know if we went in the water or not.
- 21:56Douglas: I don't remember any steps or if there's like a steel ladder going down in it.
- 22:00Kay Dunning: I don't remember I I remember like the concrete angle and just being terrified because pretty steep going down there.
- 22:07Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 22:08Kay Dunning: And then it got pretty deep on the far end, I think, didn't it?
- 22:11Douglas: Yeah.
- 22:11Douglas: And then years later, I was trying to find this reservoir.
- 22:16Douglas: And it I was like Is it still there?
- 22:18Douglas: I don't know if it is or not.
- 22:19Kay Dunning: I've been I went up there the other day looking for it.
- 22:22Kay Dunning: Just I didn't climb all the way up.
- 22:23Kay Dunning: There's a water tower.
- 22:25Douglas: Yeah.
- 22:25Kay Dunning: Um, because it's right behind the uh LDS church.
- 22:29Kay Dunning: There's the water tower, but I I didn't I well I haven't been able to find the reservoir.
- 22:34Douglas: I don't know if it's still there.
- 22:35Douglas: I don't know if it got filtered.
- 22:36Kay Dunning: I'm actually remembering it because I I keep thinking it's in my mind.
- 22:40Kay Dunning: It's like uh uh but yeah, I remember swimming there.
- 22:43Kay Dunning: My brother loved going swimming there.
- 22:45Douglas: Okay.
- 22:45Kay Dunning: I don't know how anybody could.
- 22:46Kay Dunning: It was scary.
- 22:48Douglas: Well, what what about 11 mile?
- 22:49Kay Dunning: Do you remember swimming at the leeches?
- 22:52Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah, I know, I see and glass.
- 22:54Douglas: There's always some knucklehead that would break, they were drinking it at the night or whatever.
- 22:58Douglas: The kids would go out there during the day, and there's usually glass in the water and stuff too.
- 23:02Douglas: My mom was always like, Will you be careful where you're stepping out there?
- 23:05Kay Dunning: My brother, do you remember the old diving board, the wood diving board?
- 23:08Kay Dunning: Yeah, so he was out there with uh some of his buddies, and I swear he was so accident prone.
- 23:16Kay Dunning: But he was out there jumping off the diving board and he dove in, hit his head on the bottom, which it wasn't lucky that's a big thing.
- 23:23Douglas: Yeah, you're lucky he didn't break his neck.
- 23:25Kay Dunning: But he did find glass and he cut open his the top of his head.
- 23:28Kay Dunning: Um, so your mom was a very smart person for saying that.
- 23:32Douglas: But I I drive by there now, it's like, how did what responsible parent would bring their kids out here to swim in this?
- 23:40Kay Dunning: Right.
- 23:40Kay Dunning: Well, and swimming on one side and car washing on the other side.
- 23:44Kay Dunning: I don't know if you're but that's where the leeches were.
- 23:47Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 23:47Kay Dunning: Yeah, I I avoided that as much as possible.
- 23:53Douglas: Well, it but it was it was always warmer than in the bay.
- 23:56Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 23:56Douglas: So you go out there because of a smaller body of water, you get that nice bright sunny day.
- 24:00Kay Dunning: And it would warm up.
- 24:01Douglas: It was actually fairly warm.
- 24:02Kay Dunning: It was kind of sandy on the bottom.
- 24:04Douglas: It kind of had a sandy bottom on it, kind of that river silt.
- 24:06Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 24:07Douglas: As long as you weren't stepping in glass.
- 24:08Douglas: Or getting, then it was a great experience.
- 24:14Kay Dunning: Pretty much staying just right outside the water was good.
- 24:17Kay Dunning: Put your toes right in it.
- 24:18Douglas: Put your toes right in it, that was about it.
- 24:20Kay Dunning: But did you did you go swimming down in the uh in the bay?
- 24:23Douglas: Oh yeah.
- 24:24Douglas: Well, I don't know if it's I don't know if you can call it swimming.
- 24:27Douglas: We'd wade into the water and run in and run out until we got older and started water skiing down there.
- 24:32Kay Dunning: When I was in high school, um Trudy Rikert was her name, and um uh she and I would have a deal that at the start, it was like the I don't know if it was in April or when the first sunny day in April or something, we would we would go run out into the water, get totally soaked, freeze, come back, and then we would go into town and get ice cream.
- 24:53Kay Dunning: It was sunny.
- 24:56Douglas: How old were you when you were doing this?
- 24:58Kay Dunning: Like 13, 14.
- 25:01Douglas: In April?
- 25:02Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 25:02Kay Dunning: You're running into it's a sunny, yeah.
- 25:06Kay Dunning: But remember, on a sunny day, you know, it's the start of spring.
- 25:10Douglas: It it it does feel like spring, but the water's still really, really cold.
- 25:13Kay Dunning: Yeah, well, it doesn't change much in the temperature.
- 25:16Kay Dunning: So it's just the ambient technicality temperature in the air.
- 25:20Douglas: That's once you get out, then uh then it's a different story, but I had no idea if I I know there are people that go swim in that almost year round.
- 25:28Kay Dunning: Now, yeah, every day.
- 25:30Kay Dunning: Every day.
- 25:31Kay Dunning: I have the utmost respect for them and think, not for me, thank you.
- 25:36Douglas: Yeah, this whole cold plunge thing is not for me.
- 25:38Kay Dunning: No, no, no, no.
- 25:39Douglas: I've been told it's good for me, but I I don't care.
- 25:42Kay Dunning: Give me a nice warm area, it's all good.
- 25:44Douglas: Although have you been in one of those I was at a a place and then they they had the cold plunge, uh-huh, but then they also had this room that gets to like 140 below.
- 25:56Kay Dunning: 140 below.
- 25:58Douglas: Yeah, it was like 120 and 140 below, and you can go in there for like two minutes.
- 26:03Kay Dunning: And your skin doesn't freeze that?
- 26:05Douglas: No.
- 26:05Kay Dunning: Really?
- 26:06Douglas: I I did it and I lived, and it didn't feel that bad.
- 26:09Douglas: I don't know what it is because the water was the water was like four.
- 26:13Douglas: I just did it a couple years ago.
- 26:15Kay Dunning: Well, I was gonna say maybe it was back before the brain connection was fully there, Doug.
- 26:19Douglas: Well, the brain connection still isn't fully there, we're still working on that.
- 26:24Douglas: Is anybody everybody that knows me is well aware that we're still trying to get everything to connect up there.
- 26:29Douglas: But no, it's it's it's supposed to be healthy for you, but doing the cold plunge, yeah, 45 degree, 40 degree water, 45 degree water, it's like, yeah, this is not for me.
- 26:38Kay Dunning: It's supposed to be good.
- 26:39Douglas: Standing in that room, like 120 below, did not feel that bad.
- 26:45Kay Dunning: Wow.
- 26:46Douglas: For two minutes.
- 26:46Kay Dunning: Wow, I can't imagine.
- 26:48Douglas: I thought they were nuts when they were telling me this was the temperature.
- 26:51Douglas: But you put on the these like fleece shorts and you got slippers on your feet, and you got uh ear thing over your ears and you got mittens on.
- 27:01Kay Dunning: Really?
- 27:01Douglas: The rest of you is bare skin.
- 27:03Douglas: You go in there.
- 27:05Kay Dunning: And what's the purpose of it?
- 27:07Douglas: I can't remember.
- 27:09Douglas: I don't I don't know.
- 27:09Douglas: I don't know if it's somebody that just said, hey, I bet if we make this extreme enough, we'll get somebody to pay us to do that.
- 27:16Douglas: That could be it.
- 27:17Douglas: But I remember them telling me that there were health benefits to doing this.
- 27:20Kay Dunning: Sounds like a reality show.
- 27:23Douglas: But well, they had a lot of people going in and doing it.
- 27:26Kay Dunning: Yeah, just to say they did it.
- 27:28Kay Dunning: Wow.
- 27:28Douglas: I don't know if it was just to for me, it was just to say that I did it.
- 27:32Douglas: That um, yeah, you can't be in Alaska and go someplace and people say, hey, there's something really cool is in Seattle.
- 27:37Douglas: It's in Edmonds, Washington.
- 27:40Kay Dunning: Interesting.
- 27:40Douglas: They had uh that spot with the the infrared, the um like the um the boots that you put on your legs that have the different pressure that go back and forth on them, the recovery boots and stuff.
- 27:51Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 27:52Douglas: They had those in there, and they had saunas, they had uh um yeah, the saunas, the hot tubs, they had the cold plunge, they had this, just different recovery methods and stuff that are supposed to help your body recover and do better.
- 28:08Kay Dunning: Well, we only did it one time a year.
- 28:10Douglas: I like I like all of them, but except the cold ones.
- 28:13Kay Dunning: Except the cold ones.
- 28:14Douglas: The cold ones.
- 28:15Douglas: I was like, yeah, I don't know.
- 28:16Kay Dunning: No, you get enough of that.
- 28:17Douglas: I get enough of that walking around.
- 28:18Douglas: You don't get ice.
- 28:19Kay Dunning: See, the problem is you didn't get ice cream afterwards.
- 28:21Kay Dunning: That's you you need ice cream.
- 28:24Kay Dunning: Yeah, that's that was the point.
- 28:26Kay Dunning: That's the missing.
- 28:26Kay Dunning: You know, that's the reward for going in and doing the cold stuff.
- 28:30Douglas: So you guys couldn't go get ice cream without going into the well, you know, we just thought we thought you had to do it.
- 28:36Kay Dunning: It was a turtle.
- 28:37Douglas: How many years did you do that?
- 28:38Douglas: Did you do that all the way through high school then?
- 28:40Kay Dunning: I think we did it three or four years, yeah.
- 28:41Douglas: Three or four yeah.
- 28:43Douglas: So now that you guys now that Rick's retired, are you retired as well?
- 28:49Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 28:50Kay Dunning: Not successfully, but yes.
- 28:52Douglas: Okay.
- 28:52Douglas: So now are you gonna be back in April and gonna go?
- 28:54Douglas: Are you gonna relive your tradition, get your husband to go down there and say, hey, we got ice cream coming up after this, but we gotta run into the bay.
- 29:01Kay Dunning: Where can I get the ice cream?
- 29:03Douglas: I'll tell you's you can get it to Leah's, I'll make sure she's open, or I'll you tell me what flavor, and I'll be there with the cones and I'll get the cones.
- 29:12Douglas: If you guys are gonna do that the first part, first sunny day in April, let me know ahead of time.
- 29:17Douglas: I'll have cones there reading.
- 29:19Kay Dunning: You know, Rick's an Indiana boy.
- 29:20Kay Dunning: I don't know if he can handle it.
- 29:22Kay Dunning: I don't know.
- 29:24Douglas: One way to find out how tough he is, Kay.
- 29:26Kay Dunning: This is true.
- 29:27Kay Dunning: This is true.
- 29:28Douglas: Yeah.
- 29:28Douglas: He's been living in Minnesota for quite a while.
- 29:31Douglas: He's you know, it's a little northern there.
- 29:33Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:33Douglas: It's you know, it's a little colder there, but don't have to do it, but just so you know, if you decide to go down that route.
- 29:41Kay Dunning: The offer stands?
- 29:42Douglas: The offer stands, I'm here to help.
- 29:44Kay Dunning: You've got to do that.
- 29:46Douglas: Marty's here to have a the anybody that watches this, his cameras are recording this.
- 29:51Kay Dunning: So I'm gonna get ice cream, and and here's the people that swim every day going, what is she doing?
- 29:59Douglas: She's doing this for ice cream.
- 30:00Douglas: You guys want some too?
- 30:01Douglas: We'll we'll have we got a whole court of it or whatever.
- 30:04Kay Dunning: Polar plunge day, you're gonna have to do that.
- 30:06Douglas: Yeah, I I stay away from Polar Plunge Day.
- 30:09Kay Dunning: So I got a question for you.
- 30:10Kay Dunning: Did you that's not how this works.
- 30:12Kay Dunning: Oh, too bad.
- 30:13Kay Dunning: Do you know what?
- 30:14Kay Dunning: I'm older than you.
- 30:15Kay Dunning: Respect your elders, Doug.
- 30:16Douglas: Okay, okay.
- 30:17Kay Dunning: I never did babysit you and Sarah, but I did babysit Locke.
- 30:20Kay Dunning: Um, were you part of the rifle club in uh school?
- 30:25Kay Dunning: Or was it still going?
- 30:27Douglas: It they didn't call it the necessarily the rifle club.
- 30:30Douglas: Okay, but I remember in junior high school we had hunter safety with Carlisle Stuart.
- 30:34Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 30:35Douglas: And once we were done with Hunter Safety, we could come in early in the morning on certain days and shoot in the gymnasium.
- 30:42Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 30:43Douglas: That they would lift the mats up on on the stage, open up the deals, and as as long as you'd had past your hunter safety, and and that was part of the hunter safety too, is to go in there and shoot.
- 30:52Douglas: Oh, okay.
- 30:52Douglas: And so uh Bob Atkins was usually help.
- 30:55Douglas: Carlisle did the hunter safety, Bob Atkins was doing the shooting part of it.
- 30:59Kay Dunning: So Bob ran a rifle club when I was in junior high, and um, and so I got to do that and loved it, absolutely loved it.
- 31:08Kay Dunning: You know, you're laying on the floor shooting a 22, but yeah, you're in school shooting guns.
- 31:12Kay Dunning: And you know what happens sometimes?
- 31:14Douglas: You missed.
- 31:15Kay Dunning: Sometimes you miss, and sometimes you put a hole in the gymnasium floor.
- 31:20Douglas: Wait, what uh you hit the floor?
- 31:23Kay Dunning: I hit the floor.
- 31:24Kay Dunning: How do you I don't know.
- 31:26Kay Dunning: I don't know.
- 31:28Douglas: So what what did it just leave how big a hole did you lose?
- 31:31Douglas: I don't remember any holes in the floor, okay?
- 31:34Kay Dunning: It was a very small hole.
- 31:36Kay Dunning: I don't know exactly how it happened, but we we found that one.
- 31:40Kay Dunning: And then um, but so I don't feel quite so bad because one of the police officers in town did training in there and also missed the backstab.
- 31:50Douglas: You missed the backstab?
- 31:51Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 31:51Douglas: I remember when I um out of college I went to Minnesota for six months and I moved back to Seattle and I got a job at Loomis Armored, driving an armored truck and a garden for Loomis Armored.
- 32:02Kay Dunning: Oh wow.
- 32:02Douglas: Well it was it was part-time and it paid pretty well for a part-time job.
- 32:07Douglas: I was like, well, I'll just do this until I can find a full-time job.
- 32:10Douglas: And so in their office, they had this small firing range, and they give you a 357, you gotta go back there and you gotta show that you can shoot a gun before they'll hire you.
- 32:22Douglas: And I was like, all right, I've been doing this for a long time and didn't have any problem with it.
- 32:25Douglas: And when I get in my first truck for training, there's two other guys in the truck, I'm in the passenger seat, and they're asking how I did on my train.
- 32:33Douglas: I was like, Well, I you know, grew up around guns my whole life, it really wasn't an issue.
- 32:37Douglas: And they're telling me about another guy that was still working there, that when he tried to qualify, they'd been they're painting the inside of the range, uh-huh, and there's a bucket of paint like halfway between him, and he hits the bucket of paint.
- 32:54Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 32:55Douglas: I'm like, well, good shot on the bucket of paint, but seriously, they still hired him.
- 33:00Kay Dunning: That's what I was just gonna actually hear from.
- 33:02Douglas: The standards are a little lower than I thought.
- 33:05Douglas: I don't know if that I never got verification from other people, but there's there's a couple couple guys there that told me the same story.
- 33:12Douglas: So I don't know if they're just trying to pick on this guy.
- 33:14Douglas: Or if it or if it actually happened that he hit the can of paint instead of the target in the middle of the rifle or the shooting range.
- 33:23Kay Dunning: I you know, I uh when I was in college, um, Rick got me a uh 380 pistol.
- 33:30Douglas: Okay.
- 33:31Kay Dunning: And uh we'd that was kind of mean of him.
- 33:33Douglas: Those kicked a little bit.
- 33:34Douglas: Those can be a little snappy when you're shooting it, because they're they're usually really small, which a lot of guys think is good for a woman's hand.
- 33:41Douglas: Yeah.
- 33:41Douglas: But they can be snappy on you.
- 33:43Kay Dunning: It's a good little pistol.
- 33:44Kay Dunning: You like it?
- 33:44Kay Dunning: I like it, yeah.
- 33:45Kay Dunning: I and I've never used it for anything except at the target range, but um we went out to a local target range so I could um or in in indoor one, and a friend of mine was happened to be running the range, and so he puts up, you know, the man figure and stuff like that, and he's like, Okay, I want you to aim for his heart.
- 34:02Kay Dunning: Well, I dropped my pistol when I shoot.
- 34:06Kay Dunning: And so they brought it in and I had a perfect circle.
- 34:11Kay Dunning: It's like that'll take care of it right there.
- 34:13Douglas: He wasn't gonna be reproducing, is that what you're suggesting?
- 34:17Kay Dunning: You hit the heart of the matter.
- 34:20Douglas: So was Rick a little nervous after that by the time you handle the gun and better behave myself.
- 34:26Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:28Douglas: So did you was that an an everyday thing when you guys were in school with the rifle club?
- 34:34Douglas: Or how often did you guys go into the gym?
- 34:36Kay Dunning: We were oh gosh.
- 34:38Douglas: I only remember doing it like half a dozen times, Matt.
- 34:41Kay Dunning: No, it was I mean, we were a club.
- 34:42Douglas: Okay.
- 34:43Kay Dunning: You know, like you've got your pep club and stuff like that.
- 34:45Kay Dunning: We were a club.
- 34:46Kay Dunning: And so we um I don't remember how frequently we met, maybe once a week, maybe every other or maybe twice a week.
- 34:53Kay Dunning: But yeah, it went for it went for several months.
- 34:57Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 34:58Kay Dunning: And really I did make it to Sharpshooter.
- 35:00Kay Dunning: Yeah, there you go.
- 35:02Kay Dunning: So but I've I've never used those skills outside of um outside of uh range.
- 35:11Douglas: I think the vast majority of people that have a firearm or shoot firearms are exactly the same as a lot of things.
- 35:17Douglas: It's it's fun, it's relaxing.
- 35:20Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 35:21Douglas: For me anyhow, it's it's just because you're so focused on the breathing, the trigger pull, you know, your sight picture, that kind of everything else kind of floats away.
- 35:31Douglas: You don't have room in your mind for whatever's going on at work or any of the other issues.
- 35:36Douglas: You're just focused on that thing.
- 35:38Douglas: And it's for me, it's kind of a therapeutic thing to just be there and kind of like yoga.
- 35:42Kay Dunning: And hear boom.
- 35:44Douglas: And then hear boom.
- 35:46Kay Dunning: Rick has a uh uh had a I don't know if he still has it, a 44.
- 35:50Kay Dunning: And when he ever goes to the the ranges, uh everybody stops and looks like it's a few years.
- 35:54Kay Dunning: It's a little dis a little disruptive, yeah.
- 35:58Douglas: So going through high school then in Haines.
- 36:04Kay Dunning: It was, you know, it was a really I would say it's a really good experience.
- 36:07Douglas: Um the high school is a couple years old when you started as a freshman.
- 36:16Kay Dunning: Yeah, I think it was about four years old.
- 36:19Douglas: I think that's a good idea.
- 36:20Kay Dunning: I think my brother was maybe the first year and he's yeah, he's four years older than me.
- 36:23Kay Dunning: Um but yeah, and it was it was independent school as opposed to being the um what it is now, yeah.
- 36:31Douglas: Just the high school over there.
- 36:32Kay Dunning: So I can go into the new stuff, the new area, and it's like I kind of remember this area, but I kind of don't, you know, it's like they tweaked itself.
- 36:40Kay Dunning: But um, you know, I I think we grew up at or I grew up at such a time, and I'm I think you did too, that the travel with the sports you know, they were less restrictive than they are now.
- 36:53Kay Dunning: If you missed a lot of days, you missed a lot of days, because we would go out Wednesday nights usually on the ferry, um, and then come home Sunday.
- 37:04Kay Dunning: And then go out Wednesday night, come home Sunday, and um for volleyball especially.
- 37:10Kay Dunning: Um Marion was my coach and and she would uh administer tests and we would do our homework and stuff.
- 37:17Douglas: Yeah, we were Wednesday through Monday.
- 37:18Douglas: Oh you came back Monday afternoon.
- 37:21Kay Dunning: Okay, so we we always got back Sunday.
- 37:23Kay Dunning: Well, depending on where we were at.
- 37:25Kay Dunning: Did you ever um you were in basketball then?
- 37:28Douglas: Yeah, cross country basketball, um, music fest.
- 37:32Kay Dunning: Did you uh um did you fly for any of your occasionally I remember into Angoon and it was the first time I'd ever been on a float plane.
- 37:40Kay Dunning: It was the coolest thing ever.
- 37:42Douglas: Well, the place we took float planes was to Metla Catla a couple times.
- 37:46Kay Dunning: Oh, did you?
- 37:46Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 37:47Douglas: We'd ferry one way, float plane back the other way.
- 37:50Douglas: Okay.
- 37:50Douglas: Um, and or vice versa, but I think two years, a lot of times we took the chill cat back and forth to Metlakatla.
- 37:56Douglas: Okay.
- 37:56Douglas: But there's a couple times that we were in float planes, and I I think I can't remember it had been my sophomore year, I think.
- 38:03Douglas: And somebody that I was in the plane with, the pilot had graduated from Metlakatla a few a couple years before, and they knew them.
- 38:12Douglas: Oh, and he's or I I don't know how it went down, but the pilot's like, you want to do roller coasters?
- 38:19Douglas: And whoever this was in the front's like, absolutely.
- 38:23Douglas: So pretty much the whole way it's up and just dropped.
- 38:25Douglas: Up and just drop.
- 38:26Douglas: Like, you've got to be kidding me.
- 38:29Douglas: This is not fun.
- 38:31Douglas: I'm not enjoying this.
- 38:33Douglas: No, no, we landed and goes, wasn't that fun?
- 38:35Douglas: I'm like, no, no, no, that wasn't fun.
- 38:38Douglas: I do that enough flying.
- 38:39Douglas: You do that enough flying in the Lynn Canal already, just with the weather.
- 38:43Douglas: Yeah, I don't need somebody adding on to that on purpose.
- 38:46Kay Dunning: You know, my my uh senior year of high school, this is one of those things.
- 38:50Kay Dunning: I was I was dating Rick.
- 38:52Kay Dunning: I just started dating Rick, but I had already I had a boyfriend down in Sitka, and um did not know this about you.
- 39:03Douglas: But boyfriends in every town and town.
- 39:07Kay Dunning: We were we had already agreed to go to um prom together.
- 39:11Douglas: Okay.
- 39:12Kay Dunning: This guy from Sitka.
- 39:12Kay Dunning: Yeah, and so he flew up to Juno, and Rick's best friend was flying for LAB at the time, too.
- 39:19Kay Dunning: And so everybody knew that.
- 39:22Kay Dunning: Dude, this was the deal.
- 39:23Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 39:23Kay Dunning: And so he had his best friend fly him up, and he's the worst flight of his life.
- 39:34Douglas: Does he know that that's the reason he had the worst flight of his life?
- 39:37Kay Dunning: I don't know.
- 39:38Douglas: Or if he comes across this, this might be the first time he hears about that.
- 39:42Kay Dunning: Yeah, well, I I don't think he'll I don't I'm hoping he doesn't listen to this.
- 39:47Douglas: You never know.
- 39:48Kay Dunning: Um yeah, but but the rest of it growing up, uh from my experience, you had to be involved in everything.
- 39:55Kay Dunning: Because if you weren't, there weren't enough people to to do stuff.
- 39:58Kay Dunning: And so, you know, you're in student government, you're in sports, you're in music.
- 40:02Kay Dunning: Um it's it was it was such a a fun time growing up.
- 40:08Douglas: Um I you know, I don't know if all high school was fun or not, but uh there were some classes that weren't that fun, but for the most of it, yeah, it it was fun.
- 40:17Kay Dunning: You know, I um my senior year again, I I took um what class was I in?
- 40:22Kay Dunning: It was with Mr.
- 40:24Kay Dunning: Morden, um, and I can't remember, it was oh, which math class is that?
- 40:29Douglas: Calculus trig?
- 40:30Douglas: Yes, it was the combination.
- 40:32Kay Dunning: It was the trig calculus, yep.
- 40:33Kay Dunning: And so I took a week of it and decided I don't like this.
- 40:37Kay Dunning: So I dropped it for photography.
- 40:39Douglas: Okay.
- 40:40Kay Dunning: And uh he didn't forgive me for that one for a little while.
- 40:43Kay Dunning: And so when I got to college, I tested out in my math classes.
- 40:49Kay Dunning: But just to prove to him that I could do it, I took a semester of trigonometry and a semester of calculus, just to prove to him just to show Mr.
- 40:59Kay Dunning: Morton I could do it.
- 41:01Douglas: He he got mad at me my senior year because I was his the first student that scored higher on the verbal than the math on SAT.
- 41:10Douglas: Oh, really?
- 41:10Douglas: When SAT scores came out, he was like, This is the first time this has ever happened.
- 41:15Douglas: He says, I've never had any other student score higher on the verbal than the math.
- 41:19Kay Dunning: Oh, really?
- 41:20Douglas: I thought I said, Well, I don't I don't know if it's necessarily anything the school did, it's just my mom's had me in books since I was little tiny since I could read.
- 41:29Douglas: Yeah, and I just read a ton.
- 41:31Douglas: I said, I think that had more to do with me scoring higher on the verbal than the math.
- 41:35Douglas: But yeah, he was just shaking his head.
- 41:37Douglas: He says, Doug, I don't know.
- 41:39Douglas: I've never had this happen before.
- 41:41Kay Dunning: And yeah.
- 41:42Kay Dunning: I I loved him though.
- 41:44Kay Dunning: Great math teacher.
- 41:45Kay Dunning: Oh, you're right.
- 41:45Kay Dunning: Great math teacher.
- 41:46Douglas: Yeah, absolutely.
- 41:47Kay Dunning: And Mr.
- 41:48Kay Dunning: Bruce, did you have him for science?
- 41:49Kay Dunning: Oh, absolutely.
- 41:50Kay Dunning: Loved him too.
- 41:51Douglas: Yeah, those for for high school, those are two of my favorite teachers, and then Woody Bausch and Band.
- 41:56Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 41:56Kay Dunning: You know, Woody Bausch, I loved him, loved him, but I made a deal with him that if I um auditioned for I think it was Honor Choir, maybe he wanted me to do.
- 42:09Kay Dunning: Honor Choir or Honor Band, one of the two.
- 42:11Kay Dunning: And if I got it, that he would teach me the saxophone because I played trumpet and I'd always wanted to learn the sax.
- 42:17Kay Dunning: And so that was our agreement.
- 42:20Kay Dunning: I lived up to my end of the deal.
- 42:22Kay Dunning: You still don't know how to play saxophone?
- 42:26Douglas: You want me to teach you?
- 42:28Kay Dunning: You know how to play the saxophone.
- 42:29Douglas: That's what I that's what I played throughout.
- 42:31Kay Dunning: Yeah, I don't want ice cream, I want to learn how to play the saxophone.
- 42:33Kay Dunning: You know how to play.
- 42:36Kay Dunning: Marty knows how to play ice cream.
- 42:37Douglas: You got you got two people here who know how to play saxophone.
- 42:40Kay Dunning: How about guitar or ukulele?
- 42:42Douglas: No.
- 42:42Douglas: I can't do either.
- 42:44Douglas: No, no, those are beyond my Okay.
- 42:47Douglas: No, and I and I actually was a few years out of boy, it was about 12, 13 years out of high school.
- 42:55Douglas: I but I bought it a saxophone thinking because I I started off with tenor and then Woody wanted me to get uh in eighth grade because he knew he didn't have any um tubas.
- 43:06Douglas: And so he says, Would you play the berry sax for me so we can have that low bass going through?
- 43:11Douglas: And I was like, it's all whole notes and half notes and stuff.
- 43:14Douglas: This is gonna be cake.
- 43:15Douglas: Sure, let's do this.
- 43:17Douglas: And so I played berry sax the rest of the way.
- 43:19Douglas: Oh, did you really?
- 43:19Douglas: Yeah.
- 43:20Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 43:21Douglas: Through high school.
- 43:22Kay Dunning: And Marty, what'd you play?
- 43:23Kay Dunning: I I don't know who you that you can play.
- 43:25Douglas: Tenor or Alto Alto Sacks.
- 43:27Kay Dunning: Alto Sacks.
- 43:28Douglas: Yeah, Sarah Sarah was in Alto Sacks.
- 43:29Douglas: And so I couldn't do the same thing as my sister.
- 43:31Douglas: I had to do something different, but just because you were that was just because being difficult.
- 43:36Douglas: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:37Kay Dunning: My mom in so band started in fifth grade uh for us, and um the Mr.
- 43:43Kay Dunning: Matthews sent home a uh letter, you know, what instrument does your child want to play, or do you want your child to play?
- 43:48Kay Dunning: And everybody sent it in.
- 43:50Kay Dunning: My mom puts whatever is available.
- 43:52Kay Dunning: Whatever is available, June.
- 43:55Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 43:56Kay Dunning: Thank you, mom.
- 43:57Kay Dunning: I got the oboe.
- 43:59Douglas: You got the oboe?
- 44:00Kay Dunning: I played oboe for a year in fifth grade.
- 44:02Kay Dunning: I sure did.
- 44:03Douglas: And you did not like the truth.
- 44:04Kay Dunning: I did not enjoy the oboe.
- 44:05Kay Dunning: And I looked at her and I said, I want to play the trumpet.
- 44:09Kay Dunning: And so that next summer we were down in Oregon and she got me a tri-color coronet.
- 44:17Douglas: Okay.
- 44:18Kay Dunning: And I learned how to play the coronet down south, and I came back up and played that the rest of my school career in college.
- 44:25Douglas: What was it about the trumpet that you wanted to play?
- 44:28Kay Dunning: I don't know.
- 44:29Kay Dunning: I just liked it.
- 44:30Douglas: Alright.
- 44:30Kay Dunning: Sounded cool.
- 44:31Kay Dunning: It's like the coolest instrument.
- 44:33Kay Dunning: You really, you know.
- 44:34Douglas: Well, I don't know if it's a coolest saxophone, I think, is pretty high up there, K, but if you're not squeaking, yeah.
- 44:38Douglas: That's true.
- 44:39Kay Dunning: You don't squeak usually on a trumpet.
- 44:43Douglas: But you can make some you can make some bad noises.
- 44:46Kay Dunning: You can make some bad noises.
- 44:47Douglas: It's not a squeak, but that's all right.
- 44:49Douglas: I mean Claris Clemens with the E Street band with the saxophone.
- 44:54Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 44:54Kay Dunning: I mean that's Kenny G on his Soprano sax.
- 44:57Kay Dunning: You know.
- 44:58Douglas: Yeah, I'm not as fan of the sac the soprano sax.
- 45:01Kay Dunning: No, the the deep, the deep berries are yeah.
- 45:04Douglas: The berry and the tenor are kind of I like that.
- 45:06Kay Dunning: What is the clarinet?
- 45:06Kay Dunning: That's a real low one, too.
- 45:08Kay Dunning: Is that it?
- 45:08Kay Dunning: I think Ann Anne Renee Hinman played that.
- 45:13Kay Dunning: The lower one.
- 45:14Douglas: Yeah, I don't I don't know.
- 45:16Kay Dunning: Drums are pretty cool.
- 45:17Kay Dunning: You can't really screw up on those too much.
- 45:19Douglas: I d I just remember Woody made it so much fun to go to class and play music.
- 45:24Kay Dunning: He was he yeah, he really did.
- 45:26Kay Dunning: He he made it a lot of fun.
- 45:28Douglas: He made a lot of fun.
- 45:29Douglas: And then once Music Fest was over, I don't know if he did this, but if there was a sunny day, we could usually talk him into going outside and playing softball or doing something outside.
- 45:40Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 45:40Douglas: Uh if there's a really good sunny day, but we we had to show that we knew the processional for graduation because after after music fest, that's the only thing.
- 45:49Kay Dunning: That's the only thing that's coming up.
- 45:50Douglas: And so as a freshman, you're like, I gotta get this, I gotta get this.
- 45:53Douglas: By the time you're you're junior, which is your lap, you're not playing your year.
- 45:56Douglas: Hopefully you'd better not be playing to your senior year because that means you're sticking around for year five.
- 46:01Douglas: But your junior year, you're like, Yeah, I've got this.
- 46:04Douglas: Let's go outside, Woody.
- 46:05Kay Dunning: You're like, Well, the freshman, freshmen still have a ways to go.
- 46:09Kay Dunning: Like, well, let them stay inside.
- 46:12Kay Dunning: Let them stay inside and practice.
- 46:14Douglas: Let us go outside and play.
- 46:16Kay Dunning: You know, he was my photography teacher, too.
- 46:18Kay Dunning: That's why I he made it fun.
- 46:20Douglas: Yeah.
- 46:21Douglas: And I that's what that's one of the things that I was I'm kind of bummed that they didn't have photography when I got to school.
- 46:27Douglas: Yeah.
- 46:28Douglas: That that kind of had gone away.
- 46:29Douglas: I did a little bit with John Bruce.
- 46:31Douglas: I can't remember if it was for a merit badge for scouting, but because the dark room was in the science, right off the science room there.
- 46:38Kay Dunning: For us, the dark room was in the music room.
- 46:42Douglas: Really?
- 46:42Douglas: One of those back one of the storage rooms?
- 46:45Kay Dunning: Yeah, back on the if you were looking at Mr.
- 46:48Kay Dunning: Bausch.
- 46:49Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 46:49Kay Dunning: And you went around to the right.
- 46:50Douglas: Okay.
- 46:51Kay Dunning: It was back there.
- 46:52Douglas: Yeah, because when I was in high school, as you walked in the science room right to the left, there's a little closet that had all the everything there.
- 46:59Douglas: Nope.
- 47:00Douglas: So John Bruce had it in his room.
- 47:02Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 47:02Kay Dunning: Nope.
- 47:03Kay Dunning: But he kept it over there.
- 47:04Kay Dunning: Probably so he could probably so he could keep I mean, he was a wonderful photographer.
- 47:07Kay Dunning: Oh, he did a great job with it.
- 47:08Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 47:09Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 47:09Kay Dunning: So so you know, with the uh uh traveling with sports, um, I I I told Ryan I was going to uh tell this little story because her name is um our daughter's name is is R-Y-A-N-N-E.
- 47:22Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 47:23Kay Dunning: And she was born down south, and so everybody down there is like, Ryan, Ryan, and I was like, no, I'm from the north, it's Ryan.
- 47:31Kay Dunning: And she it took her a long time to forgive me for spelling it that way.
- 47:36Kay Dunning: But I told her, I said I did it because if we ever moved back up to Alaska and she traveled with any of the sports or the music or anything like that, and got housed at people's houses.
- 47:45Kay Dunning: I wanted to make sure she got housed with the girls and not with the boys.
- 47:49Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 47:50Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 47:50Kay Dunning: So it took her a while to forgive me for that one.
- 47:53Douglas: Well, now they don't do that anymore.
- 47:55Douglas: You get housed as a group.
- 47:56Kay Dunning: That's what I heard, like in the churches or the schools.
- 47:58Douglas: Either that or a room in the school and stuff.
- 48:00Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 48:01Douglas: And I I'm sad for the kids now, but it's also good.
- 48:05Douglas: Because there are some sketchy places that we got.
- 48:07Douglas: There's some really nice places we got housed at.
- 48:10Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 48:10Douglas: And there's some sketchy places.
- 48:11Douglas: The people were always for the experiences I had, I never had a bad housing experience.
- 48:17Douglas: Some of the places were you go in there, it's like, oh, this is not gonna be good.
- 48:20Douglas: But I was always treated really well.
- 48:23Douglas: I it was it was always great no matter where I stayed.
- 48:26Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 48:26Douglas: And I was really appreciative of the learning opportunity to see so many different cultural variations throughout traveling through Southeast and And the friends you made doing it that way.
- 48:38Douglas: I mean you really got to I didn't really make friends that way, Kay.
- 48:41Kay Dunning: You did apparently I did.
- 48:43Douglas: You you Yeah, I did.
- 48:45Douglas: I I figured these people are my enemy.
- 48:47Douglas: I'm here to I'm competing and stuff.
- 48:49Douglas: It was it was a bad decision on my part, but I was like, I'm I'm not here to make friends with anybody.
- 48:53Douglas: I don't know.
- 48:54Douglas: I'm competing against them, and I know you're still friends with some of them.
- 48:57Douglas: Yeah, I I don't know really anybody in any town that I competed against in high school.
- 49:02Kay Dunning: You know, I was down in Ketchikan, uh gosh, this would have been my junior year, and Lisa Morden and I were housed together at a friend of mine's, uh another Lisa's house.
- 49:13Kay Dunning: And Lisa lived way out the road in Ketchikan, which I don't think I ever realized there was a way out the road in the road.
- 49:19Douglas: You can go a long ways out there.
- 49:21Kay Dunning: And so Lisa that we were staying with drove us into town, and on our way back out to her house that night, it was it was really foggy, rainy, and stuff like that, and we couldn't see the stripes on the road that well, so or the center line.
- 49:35Kay Dunning: So we would we would kind of follow like the white line, and if it disappeared, then we would drift over to the towards more of the center, and then we'd go back.
- 49:43Kay Dunning: So we're weaving down the road, and we get pulled over.
- 49:48Douglas: Well, of course you should.
- 49:50Kay Dunning: Yeah, and so the officer asked for her license.
- 49:53Kay Dunning: Well, she has a permit.
- 49:54Kay Dunning: She didn't have her license license yet.
- 49:57Kay Dunning: And Lisa Morton did not have her driver's license.
- 50:01Kay Dunning: I'm the only one with the license.
- 50:03Douglas: Did you get a ticket?
- 50:05Kay Dunning: No, no, we didn't get a ticket.
- 50:07Kay Dunning: Well, let me rephrase that.
- 50:09Kay Dunning: The officer told me to drive us the rest of the way home.
- 50:14Kay Dunning: Well, it was a stick shift on the column.
- 50:16Kay Dunning: I've never driven one of those.
- 50:18Kay Dunning: And I looked at him, I go, You have a choice.
- 50:22Kay Dunning: You can have her keep driving home, and we'll get there safely.
- 50:27Kay Dunning: Or I can drive, and you'll probably be calling an ambulance because I will wreck somewhere along the line.
- 50:32Kay Dunning: I don't know where, but you know, I don't know this road, there's water there, that's not a good sign.
- 50:37Kay Dunning: There's a mountain there.
- 50:38Kay Dunning: And so he's like, just go.
- 50:42Kay Dunning: Just all of you go.
- 50:43Kay Dunning: And and I'm not gonna look, but I did heard hear that she had to go to court after that.
- 50:48Kay Dunning: So yeah.
- 50:58Douglas: If you're out in the val out far enough in the valley or out Ketchikan, and they worked in town, they dropped you off on the way, and so there's a in Ketchikan and Juneau.
- 51:09Douglas: I there's a couple times I got very familiar with the open area in the JDHS and the little mall in Ketchcan.
- 51:18Douglas: Because you just go sit there because you're there all day.
- 51:21Kay Dunning: You got nothing else you can do.
- 51:23Douglas: So they're dropping you off like eight o'clock at the school when they're on their way to work.
- 51:26Douglas: And for music festival or even basketball, you're it's eight, nine o'clock at night sometimes when you're done.
- 51:33Douglas: Yeah.
- 51:33Douglas: And they're picking you up to go home, and you're you're there for the day.
- 51:37Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 51:38Douglas: There's no shuttling back and forth.
- 51:39Kay Dunning: You better have some money for food.
- 51:41Douglas: You better have some food money, and you can better have something to do.
- 51:44Douglas: Yeah.
- 51:44Douglas: Or you're just gonna walk around aimlessly.
- 51:46Kay Dunning: Maybe that's one of the reasons they house everybody together now, too.
- 51:49Kay Dunning: It's a little bit more than that.
- 51:50Kay Dunning: Could be better.
- 51:51Douglas: Could be.
- 51:52Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 51:53Kay Dunning: Um, yeah, it it was.
- 51:56Douglas: But no, there's some really cool experiences of people saying just how the uh the only and this isn't a bad experience, but I don't know if I've told this on here before, but my senior year we're in Wrangle to play basketball.
- 52:09Kay Dunning: Uh-huh.
- 52:10Douglas: And I think it's the n the night we got there Thursday night or something, we're gonna play Friday, Saturday, sitting down to eat dinner, and the father of the house we're staying at, he's like, Oh, old.
- 52:21Douglas: He says, I recognize that name.
- 52:23Douglas: Did you have a sister or something?
- 52:24Douglas: I was like, Yeah, my sister Sarah.
- 52:26Douglas: Yeah, she was a really good ball player.
- 52:27Douglas: I was like, Yeah, she was.
- 52:28Douglas: What's that?
- 52:29Douglas: What is she doing now?
- 52:30Douglas: I said, She's playing at Western Oregon.
- 52:32Douglas: Oh, yeah, she was really good.
- 52:33Douglas: She says, So I I don't remember you.
- 52:35Douglas: Are you a freshman?
- 52:36Douglas: Like, yeah, no, I'm a senior.
- 52:38Douglas: I've been here for four years.
- 52:39Douglas: He goes, Oh, don't really remember you.
- 52:42Douglas: It's because I'm not nearly as good a ball player as my sister.
- 52:46Douglas: Pretty much put me in my place right there.
- 52:49Douglas: That I've done nothing memorable on the basketball court in Wrangle for anybody to remember me.
- 52:55Douglas: Or probably anywhere else in Southeast that was a bit.
- 52:57Douglas: Yeah, it it it let me know that I should not count on basketball to to do a whole lot for me.
- 53:06Kay Dunning: Uh you know, Wrangle it's a nice enough town, but I I took my um my SATs there.
- 53:14Kay Dunning: I was I was down there for I don't remember what what event we were down there for.
- 53:19Kay Dunning: It's always obviously in the spring.
- 53:21Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 53:21Kay Dunning: Um me?
- 53:22Kay Dunning: It wasn't track.
- 53:23Kay Dunning: Could have been track.
- 53:25Kay Dunning: I don't know.
- 53:26Douglas: Um but you were there the day they're doing the SATs.
- 53:28Kay Dunning: Yeah, so I had to find my way from the house I was at to the school.
- 53:33Kay Dunning: Hadn't I because I'd only been to Wrangle a couple times and didn't know where it was.
- 53:38Kay Dunning: Got there, took the tests all day, and then came back and and uh needless to say I took it again in Haines because I didn't do quite as well.
- 53:47Douglas: You didn't do as do as well in Wrangle?
- 53:49Kay Dunning: No, no, I didn't.
- 53:50Kay Dunning: So um my uh senior year of high school, or right after I graduated, my mom, a very persuasive person, wanted me to try for a scholarship through the um Miss Alaska National Teen Program.
- 54:06Douglas: Okay.
- 54:07Kay Dunning: And so she I'm like, I'm I'm not doing this, mom.
- 54:11Kay Dunning: I am not going to do this pageant.
- 54:13Kay Dunning: I'm not I'm not a pageant person.
- 54:16Kay Dunning: And she's like, no, no, you have to do this.
- 54:19Kay Dunning: And so I talked by my dad into agreeing that I could get a du a puppy if I if I went and did it, and if I won.
- 54:27Kay Dunning: Well, that's not gonna happen.
- 54:29Douglas: So so I I you you gotta you're willing to do the pageant thing, which you don't want to do as long as you get a puppy.
- 54:35Kay Dunning: Uh as long as I got a puppy.
- 54:36Kay Dunning: Mind you, I've just graduated high school.
- 54:38Kay Dunning: If I get a puppy, I'm going off to college.
- 54:40Douglas: And mom and dad are taking care of the dog.
- 54:42Kay Dunning: I take care of the dog.
- 54:43Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 54:44Kay Dunning: So, um, and so my mom and dad drove up to Anchorage, which is where the pageant was being held.
- 54:50Kay Dunning: And uh to start off with, I was still here for another day or two before um before I had to go.
- 54:57Kay Dunning: And I'm like, I'm not I'm not gonna go.
- 55:00Douglas: And Rick you let you let your parents drive to Anchorage with the expectation they're gonna see you compete in a beauty pageant, yeah, and you're here going, Yeah, I'm not gonna show up.
- 55:11Kay Dunning: I don't think I'm gonna go.
- 55:12Kay Dunning: I don't think I'm gonna go.
- 55:13Kay Dunning: Well, Rick is, you know, he wants to stay in good graces with my mom and dad.
- 55:17Kay Dunning: Yeah, because we'd start to go.
- 55:18Kay Dunning: So he flies me down to Juneau, and we we get down to Juneau, and we were both working for LAB at the time.
- 55:27Kay Dunning: We get down to Juneau, and it's a really nice day, and he circles around the airport, and I'm like, okay, weird.
- 55:37Kay Dunning: And he circles again, and we circle a third time.
- 55:40Kay Dunning: I'm like, um we're I'm the only other one in the plane.
- 55:44Kay Dunning: I'm like, what's going on, Rick?
- 55:46Kay Dunning: And he's like, I can't get the landing gear down.
- 55:48Kay Dunning: I can't guarantee that it's locked in position.
- 55:51Kay Dunning: So um Bart Henderson, uh Bart Henderson, sorry, Bart.
- 55:59Kay Dunning: Yeah, Bart Bennett.
- 56:01Kay Dunning: Bart Bennett, uh Barton Bennett um somehow took a look and he he's like, Yeah, it's it's locked down, and so we landed.
- 56:08Kay Dunning: And I'm like, huh, well that was interesting.
- 56:11Kay Dunning: And Vert goes, yeah.
- 56:12Kay Dunning: I kept thinking, your dad's never gonna let me see you again if I can't crash his plane.
- 56:18Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:20Kay Dunning: So so I I uh I I fly up to Anchorage and it's the night of the of the actual pageant.
- 56:27Kay Dunning: Um, and there's a girl up there, and this is where this knowing people from Southeast, her name's Nicole Heinstad from uh Petersburg.
- 56:36Kay Dunning: And she and I knew each other from volleyball very well, and so she's up in the pageant, also.
- 56:42Kay Dunning: And we're like, Okay, oh, cool.
- 56:45Kay Dunning: Let's not go to the pageant because the Miss Alaska pageant's happening across town and at a hotel.
- 56:51Kay Dunning: Let's go to that one instead.
- 56:52Kay Dunning: We're not gonna win or anything like that.
- 56:54Kay Dunning: Let's just skip that on this one and we're gonna go.
- 56:56Douglas: Wait, there's two pageants happened at the same time.
- 56:59Douglas: So there's Miss Alaska and what was the other one?
- 57:01Douglas: Miss Teen Alaska?
- 57:02Kay Dunning: Miss No, Miss Alaska National Teen, much lower down on the scale.
- 57:06Douglas: Miss Alaska National Teen.
- 57:07Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 57:08Douglas: And then Miss Alaska is the other one.
- 57:10Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 57:10Douglas: So you want to go for the upper I want to go see that one because you want to go see it.
- 57:14Douglas: You don't want to see it.
- 57:14Kay Dunning: Yes, because a friend of mine was in it.
- 57:16Douglas: Okay.
- 57:16Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 57:17Kay Dunning: And so I was like, cool, Nicole, let's let's go do this.
- 57:20Kay Dunning: She's like, Yeah, yeah, let's skip out on this.
- 57:22Kay Dunning: Well, we ended up not skipping out, we ended up doing our pageant.
- 57:26Kay Dunning: And um, and she got fourth run up, and for somehow I I won.
- 57:31Kay Dunning: And um got my puppy.
- 57:34Kay Dunning: I did get my phone.
- 57:35Douglas: What kind of puppy?
- 57:37Kay Dunning: Um, a he was a he was part um cocker spaniel and part Newfoundland.
- 57:44Douglas: What'd you name him?
- 57:45Kay Dunning: Eb Ebenezer.
- 57:46Douglas: Ebenezer.
- 57:47Kay Dunning: He was all black.
- 57:48Kay Dunning: He was a short, cockery ears Newfoundland bonnie that hated the water.
- 57:55Douglas: So what what what was the pageant experience like?
- 57:59Kay Dunning: It was um Is that like the traditional one that there's like no swimsuit.
- 58:04Douglas: Evening gown.
- 58:05Kay Dunning: There was an evening gown.
- 58:07Douglas: Talent.
- 58:07Kay Dunning: Um, talent or or uh speech.
- 58:10Douglas: Speech?
- 58:10Douglas: Which did you choose?
- 58:12Kay Dunning: I did the speech because I was listening.
- 58:13Douglas: What was your speech about?
- 58:14Kay Dunning: I couldn't even tell you.
- 58:16Kay Dunning: I think I think it was something about what's right about America.
- 58:18Kay Dunning: What's right about America?
- 58:19Kay Dunning: Something like that.
- 58:20Kay Dunning: I don't I don't honestly remember.
- 58:22Douglas: You don't have a copy somewhere?
- 58:23Kay Dunning: No.
- 58:24Douglas: No?
- 58:24Kay Dunning: No.
- 58:25Kay Dunning: Oh my gosh.
- 58:26Kay Dunning: No.
- 58:26Kay Dunning: I don't I think I've got a lot of people.
- 58:28Douglas: Was that videotaped at all?
- 58:30Kay Dunning: I have no idea, and I wouldn't tell you if it was.
- 58:33Douglas: Marty, we need to do some research.
- 58:35Douglas: What year was this?
- 58:36Douglas: 83, 84?
- 58:38Kay Dunning: Again, I don't remember these things.
- 58:40Kay Dunning: I'm old now.
- 58:41Douglas: Yeah, we we have a rough we have a rough starting point, Marty.
- 58:45Kay Dunning: But I'm not the only one from town to have won it.
- 58:48Douglas: No.
- 58:48Kay Dunning: No.
- 58:49Kay Dunning: There's somebody that won it before me, and somebody won after me, but the person that won before me is Marty's mom.
- 58:56Kay Dunning: True story.
- 58:57Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 58:57Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 58:59Douglas: Check that out.
- 59:00Kay Dunning: She did the talent and she was very talented.
- 59:02Douglas: So she still is very talented.
- 59:04Douglas: Yes, very, very talented.
- 59:06Kay Dunning: So um, so yeah.
- 59:07Kay Dunning: So so Christy kind of walked me through a little bit of the stuff.
- 59:10Douglas: She gave you the heads up on what to expect.
- 59:12Kay Dunning: Yeah, a little bit.
- 59:13Douglas: So um was there was there a next step after that?
- 59:17Kay Dunning: Yeah, then it was um that was in June.
- 59:21Kay Dunning: And um the the nationals were in August in Florida.
- 59:28Kay Dunning: And so one kind of really touching part of it was that the weekend that I was up there for the pageant was when um Tudor Waldo had her accident.
- 59:40Kay Dunning: And so before I went to Nationals, um, Carol had found a tutor's favorite necklace of the class that was broken on it, and it was in her pocket.
- 59:51Kay Dunning: And so before I went to Nationals, um Carol asked me if she had gotten a fix and asked me to wear it at Nationals, which I gladly did.
- 1:00:02Kay Dunning: It was very heartwarming.
- 1:00:04Kay Dunning: Um but yeah, so Nationals were down in Florida, and uh Pat Boone was our MC.
- 1:00:10Kay Dunning: And it was a whole lot of learning choreography uh for a week, and we were we got to do the um Disney um Disney World um the electric light parade thing.
- 1:00:24Kay Dunning: We were the the grand whatever people to start and um Grand Marshalls, I guess.
- 1:00:30Kay Dunning: And um just it it was a lot of fun.
- 1:00:33Kay Dunning: I I made some good friends at it.
- 1:00:36Douglas: Um are you still in touch with any of them?
- 1:00:38Kay Dunning: Not now, but I was for a long time.
- 1:00:40Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:00:41Kay Dunning: Um I still I still recognize, you know, I was like, uh I think I know them on Facebook and stuff, but um it was very fun.
- 1:00:48Kay Dunning: Um but the interviews I had um, you know, they had all I don't remember ten judges or something like that.
- 1:00:58Kay Dunning: And one of them was a newspaper or I'm sorry, news reporter from Puerto Rico.
- 1:01:04Kay Dunning: And so when she interviewed me, she's like, So what are you going to do when you get back to the United States after you go home and get back to the United States?
- 1:01:11Kay Dunning: And I looked at her, I go, You you do know Alaska is part of the United States.
- 1:01:16Kay Dunning: It's a fortnight state.
- 1:01:18Kay Dunning: And uh I didn't win.
- 1:01:22Douglas: When you call out the judges, it usually doesn't go in your favor, Kate.
- 1:01:26Kay Dunning: It doesn't, it doesn't.
- 1:01:27Kay Dunning: It's uh yeah, something maybe I shouldn't I I learned from, but um Well, no, I think it's quite correct that you should let somebody know that they don't have the money.
- 1:01:35Kay Dunning: Yes, I know Puerto Rico's not.
- 1:01:38Douglas: But we've been blessed that we did get a star on the map on the flag.
- 1:01:42Kay Dunning: That's right, yeah.
- 1:01:42Kay Dunning: We are that 49th star, right there.
- 1:01:44Kay Dunning: So so yeah, so I left that and then um went to college and uh Where'd you go to college?
- 1:01:50Kay Dunning: Willamette University in Salem, Morgan.
- 1:01:53Kay Dunning: Yeah, and ironically, the dorm I was in, um, we called it the Oreo dorm.
- 1:01:58Kay Dunning: It had girls on the main floor, guys in the middle, girls on top.
- 1:02:01Kay Dunning: And there was only like I don't know, nine of us, nine or ten of us, and on my wing.
- 1:02:06Kay Dunning: And one of the girls was the first runner up from the pageant.
- 1:02:10Kay Dunning: Oh, she was from Anchorage.
- 1:02:11Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:02:11Douglas: Really?
- 1:02:12Kay Dunning: So we stayed in touch for a long time too.
- 1:02:15Kay Dunning: Um but yeah, that was it was a unique experience.
- 1:02:20Douglas: What you touched on this, and and Rick mentioned this when we interviewed him.
- 1:02:25Douglas: He's in Haines as a pilot, he goes to a basketball game, sees you in the bear costume, yep, and is like I like a woman in a bear costume.
- 1:02:37Douglas: I think I need to I think I need that.
- 1:02:40Kay Dunning: Can we specify that that's B-E-A-R costume?
- 1:02:43Kay Dunning: Thank you.
- 1:02:44Douglas: B-E-A-R.
- 1:02:44Douglas: Yeah, yes, it's glacier bear costume, mascot of Haines.
- 1:02:49Douglas: What was your parents' reaction that you have this guy that's here as a pilot, older than you, you're still in high school, wanting to date their daughter?
- 1:02:58Kay Dunning: You know, it's what was what was dad and mom.
- 1:03:01Kay Dunning: Well, it took a couple it took us, I don't know if he told you, but it took like a month and a half before I said yes to going out with him.
- 1:03:07Kay Dunning: Um, and that was because um Donna Willard got stuck in a snowbank.
- 1:03:12Kay Dunning: In exchange for getting her unstuck, she had to s set us up.
- 1:03:17Kay Dunning: Um she set us up on a date.
- 1:03:19Douglas: She set you up on a date.
- 1:03:20Kay Dunning: She came to school and she's like, You have to go to um you have to go out with this guy.
- 1:03:25Kay Dunning: I'm like, I have a boyfriend.
- 1:03:26Kay Dunning: Why would I do that?
- 1:03:27Kay Dunning: Because of this reason.
- 1:03:29Kay Dunning: So I agreed, and we've been together ever since.
- 1:03:33Douglas: So Rick pulled her out of the snowbank and then he said she said In exchange for setting us up.
- 1:03:41Douglas: You've got to set me up with a date with Kay.
- 1:03:44Kay Dunning: Yes, yes.
- 1:03:44Kay Dunning: All right, yeah.
- 1:03:46Kay Dunning: So then it yeah, so we owe our marriage to Tom and I'll be able to do that.
- 1:03:50Douglas: So how how long after that first date did you tell the guy in Sitka that you've got a pilot boyfriend in Haines?
- 1:03:57Kay Dunning: Do I have to answer that one?
- 1:03:58Kay Dunning: After the prom?
- 1:04:01Douglas: You wait until after the prom?
- 1:04:03Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 1:04:03Kay Dunning: Because I wasn't sure, you know, and uh Rick Rick went down to uh um California for January.
- 1:04:10Kay Dunning: Um because there's not much flying here, you know.
- 1:04:12Kay Dunning: And so he was gone the whole month of January and part of February.
- 1:04:16Kay Dunning: I think he got back here um right about the time we came back up from basketball tournament, uh which would have been down in uh Ketchikan that year.
- 1:04:25Kay Dunning: And uh yeah, we uh he came I got uh got into town.
- 1:04:30Kay Dunning: My dad picks me up and he's like, Rick, Rick had a little accident while he was gone.
- 1:04:35Kay Dunning: He doesn't look as good as he used to.
- 1:04:39Douglas: What are you thinking?
- 1:04:40Kay Dunning: I'm like, huh.
- 1:04:41Kay Dunning: Well I wasn't I hadn't broken it.
- 1:04:46Kay Dunning: You still have the guy in ticket.
- 1:04:48Kay Dunning: You know, I got my You still have an emotions and you got a fallback here.
- 1:04:53Kay Dunning: So um, so yeah, um uh I don't even remember where I was going with that.
- 1:04:58Kay Dunning: But where my parent what my parents thought of it, um it they were okay with it, I think.
- 1:05:06Kay Dunning: Um I know my dad was uh was legally blind by that time.
- 1:05:10Kay Dunning: And so we would sit on the the couch and and my dad would be like right in front of the TV and he's like, you know, my eyes might not work, but my ears do.
- 1:05:20Kay Dunning: I can hear you.
- 1:05:21Kay Dunning: I know what it's like to be that age.
- 1:05:24Kay Dunning: Um and uh and so he he did my dad did set up a a deal apparently with the um with the police.
- 1:05:35Douglas: With the police.
- 1:05:36Kay Dunning: Rick didn't have access to a car all the time, so I would drive him home um to the swamp.
- 1:05:41Kay Dunning: And we would, you know, we'd be sitting there, and every night the police would come up and shine their high beams into the car.
- 1:05:51Kay Dunning: And it was like, oh, for Pete's sake.
- 1:05:55Kay Dunning: And so that went on for that went on for a couple months.
- 1:06:00Douglas: And did you know your dad had to deal with the police at this time?
- 1:06:05Douglas: Were you just thinking, man, this is quite the coincidence that they're coming up every single night?
- 1:06:09Kay Dunning: What's going on?
- 1:06:09Kay Dunning: What's going on?
- 1:06:10Douglas: Well that was he calling them and letting them, hey, Kay's dropping off rig, now's the time to go.
- 1:06:17Kay Dunning: I don't know for sure.
- 1:06:18Kay Dunning: And I don't know if it was every night, but it sure felt like Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:22Kay Dunning: But um that summer is when they put in that two-way stop over by Uniquely Alaskan.
- 1:06:28Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 1:06:29Kay Dunning: Um, and the very first, I think it was with the first day or so that it was in, I was coming, I had the right-of-way.
- 1:06:37Kay Dunning: And um our chief of police, Jordan Zorn Yankovich at the time, um, ran the stop sign because he'd forgot forgot it was there.
- 1:06:45Kay Dunning: And he oh he didn't hit me or anything like that, but we both stopped and got out, and he's like, I'm so sorry, what can I do?
- 1:06:50Kay Dunning: And I'm like, stop having your police officers come and done.
- 1:06:55Kay Dunning: So so that never happened again after that.
- 1:06:57Kay Dunning: And my mom adored him because he's a pilot and she was a private pilot, you know.
- 1:07:02Kay Dunning: Oh yeah, she was probably so she she thought it was great, and then when my grandma met him, she's like, Oh, my hero's Charles Lindbergh, and he's like Charles.
- 1:07:10Kay Dunning: I'm like, Love you, Rick.
- 1:07:14Kay Dunning: So so yeah, they all loved him.
- 1:07:18Kay Dunning: My brother is wanted to learn how to fly, so he he fit right in.
- 1:07:23Douglas: But so the fact that he's a pilot helped his cause.
- 1:07:26Kay Dunning: It helped his cause a lot.
- 1:07:27Kay Dunning: Um the fact that he was 21 when we started dating.
- 1:07:31Kay Dunning: Yeah, but on his birthday in that March, um we celebrated his 21st birthday again, and I and he's like, I I'm 22, and I go, Not if you want to keep dating me, because I told my parents you were 20.
- 1:07:44Kay Dunning: So we you know, we just had to fudge a little bit on that.
- 1:07:49Kay Dunning: Just like, no, we're celebrating 21st.
- 1:07:53Kay Dunning: That's right, that's right.
- 1:07:53Kay Dunning: You're 21 again.
- 1:07:55Douglas: Did did they ever find out that he was actually a year older?
- 1:07:59Douglas: Or I'm sure they figured it out.
- 1:08:01Douglas: Did you keep that a secret from the No, no, I I think they figured it out somewhere along the lines.
- 1:08:06Douglas: Well, I'm glad that their daughter misrepresented her boyfriend.
- 1:08:10Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 1:08:11Kay Dunning: Apparently I was really you know, yeah.
- 1:08:14Douglas: That's pretty pretty quick thinking there.
- 1:08:16Kay Dunning: Gotta do what you gotta do.
- 1:08:18Douglas: Being a commercial pilot at 20, that made me look even better.
- 1:08:21Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah, it really did, didn't it?
- 1:08:23Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:08:25Douglas: So when you went down to Willamette then, what Rick was still flying here?
- 1:08:31Kay Dunning: He so he did for until November of that year, and then he of of my freshman year of college, he left here and went to um uh Lincoln, Nebraska.
- 1:08:44Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 1:08:45Kay Dunning: To a little tiny uh carrier, not a little tiny carrier, uh a carrier called American Central Airlines.
- 1:08:50Kay Dunning: So he was based in Lincoln, um and then he got transferred to Omaha.
- 1:08:56Kay Dunning: But this was a a carrier that really, really did not have good um ethics, I want to say.
- 1:09:05Kay Dunning: And and they they would um overload the airplanes and they and just a lot of shady stuff going on, and it was owned by some cops from Chicago.
- 1:09:16Kay Dunning: I don't know how to do that.
- 1:09:18Douglas: There's a lot we could say, there's a lot of intuitive on that situation.
- 1:09:23Kay Dunning: Well, the police officers here would would say we we don't have enough money to make it on a c on a uh to own an air to make to own an airline.
- 1:09:33Kay Dunning: Um we believe that there was a little extra money being funneled.
- 1:09:36Kay Dunning: Funneled through there.
- 1:09:38Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:09:38Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:09:38Kay Dunning: So um he decided that at at that point he did not have his degree.
- 1:09:45Kay Dunning: He'd gone to uh Embry Riddle Aeronautical Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona.
- 1:09:51Kay Dunning: Um, but uh he did not have his degree, so he decided my sec during my second year of college, um, he came back out to Oregon and got uh went to the community college there and got a uh an associate's degree in uh business, which was a great, great decision.
- 1:10:06Kay Dunning: And um then we came back up here to Haines to uh help work at Haines Airways.
- 1:10:14Kay Dunning: Um so we did that for two years and then um my senior year of college.
- 1:10:21Kay Dunning: We got married right before my senior year of college, and that was my dad's one thing, is like you have to let her finish college.
- 1:10:28Kay Dunning: And I said, You don't need to tell him that.
- 1:10:31Kay Dunning: I I am finishing college.
- 1:10:33Kay Dunning: I've already told him that, and that's already hit.
- 1:10:34Kay Dunning: Yeah, my my aunt was doing this.
- 1:10:36Kay Dunning: You have she has to finish college, and so so um that was that was a given.
- 1:10:41Kay Dunning: I was never going not in the industry.
- 1:10:42Douglas: And what were you getting your degree in?
- 1:10:44Kay Dunning: Um I started off as a music ed major and uh quickly switched to um business economics with a minor in industrial psych.
- 1:10:52Kay Dunning: And so it's industrial psych.
- 1:10:54Kay Dunning: It's human resources.
- 1:10:56Kay Dunning: It's a fancy way of saying it is, it is industrial psych.
- 1:11:00Kay Dunning: I mean, you're thinking about in industry and the psychology of people that you work with.
- 1:11:04Kay Dunning: Okay, it's human resources.
- 1:11:06Kay Dunning: Um so my senior year of college, um he came down to visit and he got an interview with Horizon Air and then um got hired by them.
- 1:11:18Kay Dunning: And so he never came back up to Haines um to work anymore after that.
- 1:11:24Douglas: So when you guys were when he's in Nebraska, you're in Oregon.
- 1:11:28Douglas: Is this a lot of phone calls?
- 1:11:31Douglas: Or is this letters?
- 1:11:33Kay Dunning: This was a lot of letters, a lot of letters, and a phone call once a week because it costs a lot of money to take.
- 1:11:38Kay Dunning: That's what I was gonna say.
- 1:11:39Douglas: Like now it's free.
- 1:11:40Douglas: You can call anywhere, texting, FaceTime, all that stuff.
- 1:11:43Kay Dunning: But I didn't have a phone in my room, so there was a phone across the hallway.
- 1:11:48Kay Dunning: Um and so from my dorm room.
- 1:11:50Kay Dunning: And so I'm not sure.
- 1:11:51Douglas: So you're out in the open, you're gonna Well, it was it had a little door, you know.
- 1:11:54Douglas: Okay, you did have a private little booth, so not everybody was hearing what you're talking about.
- 1:11:58Kay Dunning: I I got a phone at at some point along the line.
- 1:12:01Kay Dunning: But yeah.
- 1:12:02Kay Dunning: I mean I didn't didn't have my own phone number or anything like that.
- 1:12:05Kay Dunning: So that's what we called.
- 1:12:07Douglas: We and we did you have a set time every week that yeah, pretty much, pretty much.
- 1:12:12Douglas: And it was So you both make sure you're at the phone.
- 1:12:14Kay Dunning: And it was uh like a um yeah, yes.
- 1:12:18Kay Dunning: So we yeah, we you know, you couldn't text each other, you couldn't email each other.
- 1:12:23Kay Dunning: So it's like write a letter, let's call.
- 1:12:26Kay Dunning: Um, I think we did it mostly on Sunday afternoons or something like that.
- 1:12:30Kay Dunning: But but yeah, we we tried to talk at least once a week because that's a that was a year of um doing that.
- 1:12:36Kay Dunning: And I flew back in must have been like February, early March for my spring break.
- 1:12:42Kay Dunning: Um flew back to Nebraska.
- 1:12:45Kay Dunning: Um and we had it all set up when I was going to come out there, and I decided to surprise him a day early, and I'd set that up with his roommate.
- 1:12:52Kay Dunning: Well, you know, surprises can can go the wrong way.
- 1:12:55Kay Dunning: Luckily, this one did not.
- 1:12:57Kay Dunning: His roommate picked me up, very nice guy, had never met him before, and we went to the apartment and it was okay.
- 1:13:04Douglas: So how how'd you arrange this with the roommate ahead of time?
- 1:13:07Douglas: Did you just call at a time you knew Rick wasn't there and was hoping the roommate would there?
- 1:13:10Douglas: Or'd you get in touch with it?
- 1:13:12Kay Dunning: I don't remember exactly how I did that.
- 1:13:13Kay Dunning: I I don't know, but somehow I yeah, I I yeah, I must have called and I was like, Oh, what's your roommate's name and stuff like that?
- 1:13:21Kay Dunning: And I knew Rick's schedule a lot of times.
- 1:13:23Kay Dunning: Uh-huh.
- 1:13:24Kay Dunning: So, um, so yeah, I I tried calling him then.
- 1:13:27Kay Dunning: And then uh he and I drove up to uh Indiana and I met his mom for the first time.
- 1:13:33Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 1:13:34Kay Dunning: So we he had a 280Z and it had just snowed.
- 1:13:38Kay Dunning: Oh geez, it just snowed in Nebraska.
- 1:13:41Kay Dunning: It was like closed a lot of the road and then they they opened it up.
- 1:13:45Kay Dunning: But he's like, Why don't you drive?
- 1:13:46Kay Dunning: It's a really fun car to drive.
- 1:13:48Kay Dunning: Well, it's also dry pavement.
- 1:13:52Douglas: It's a really fun car to drive.
- 1:13:53Douglas: I don't know so much on snow and ice.
- 1:13:55Kay Dunning: No, and it was ruts, you know.
- 1:13:57Kay Dunning: I mean, you had to stay in the ruts, and I I was like, Oh my goodness, like this is this is not going well.
- 1:14:04Kay Dunning: I I don't care if I'm from Alaska, Rick.
- 1:14:06Kay Dunning: I'm not driving your car.
- 1:14:07Kay Dunning: Coming back down to uh to uh Omaha, it was sunny, uh the snow was gone.
- 1:14:13Kay Dunning: I was like doing 85.
- 1:14:15Kay Dunning: I'm like, gosh, this car just goes really fast.
- 1:14:19Douglas: This is when the anytime we have weather like this, Rick, I'll drive your car.
- 1:14:22Douglas: Exactly.
- 1:14:23Douglas: Snow, not so much.
- 1:14:25Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:14:25Kay Dunning: So so then that next summer, um, after he left Nebraska and was coming back to Oregon to go to college, we met up down in California, Southern California.
- 1:14:34Kay Dunning: And I got to meet his brother and sister-in-law, and and then his dad.
- 1:14:40Kay Dunning: And at this time he had 280 ZX, which was a little he's he's swapping cars pretty quick.
- 1:14:48Kay Dunning: He swapped out, yeah.
- 1:14:49Kay Dunning: And and it was a really nice car.
- 1:14:51Kay Dunning: It had T tops.
- 1:14:52Kay Dunning: And so um, you know, we both worked for the Airlines.
- 1:14:56Kay Dunning: Um and and so I because I stayed working for LAB and he worked for American Central, like I said.
- 1:15:03Kay Dunning: And so we uh we got our hotel discount.
- 1:15:06Kay Dunning: So we drove up from LA all the way up to um Salem, but we stopped in San Francisco and we pulled up at this Sheraton hotel.
- 1:15:15Kay Dunning: And I've got a t I've got a bikini top on and cutoffs, and he's in cutoffs and a you know, little cutoff tank top thing.
- 1:15:22Kay Dunning: And we pull up to this beautiful Sheraton hotel, and it's and we're like, we like our airline discount now, so it's like, yeah, we we weren't uh quite quite dressed appropriately, but it all worked out.
- 1:15:39Douglas: Pay them the money and she lets you in.
- 1:15:40Kay Dunning: They did, they did, they let us in.
- 1:15:42Kay Dunning: So yeah, and from there, Rick got based in uh I don't know if he he told you all the story, probably, but uh some of it, but yeah, we got based in.
- 1:15:52Douglas: For the couple people that still haven't listened to his fill us in on the rest of the details.
- 1:15:57Kay Dunning: I finished college in uh December after he got hired.
- 1:16:01Kay Dunning: He got hired in I think November uh at at Horizon Air and got based in Idaho in Boise.
- 1:16:07Kay Dunning: And so I finished up college that December and went over to uh to Boise and um we lived over there for about four months and I worked as a travel agent at a place called it was the Owaihi Plaza for Global Travel.
- 1:16:22Kay Dunning: And we had like 19 branches, and they would send all their phone lines into my office at nighttime, and so I was the one that had to handle all the phones.
- 1:16:32Douglas: Okay.
- 1:16:32Kay Dunning: And my first night that I worked, um, I had to have her come in and help me out because I couldn't figure out processing all the tickets.
- 1:16:40Kay Dunning: It's back when it was physical tickets and I had to get everything ready, and I was there until like three o'clock in the morning.
- 1:16:47Kay Dunning: It was supposed to be 3 p.m.
- 1:16:49Kay Dunning: to 11 p.m.
- 1:16:50Kay Dunning: And um, so yeah, it was it was a very fun place to live.
- 1:16:53Kay Dunning: But we moved back to Vancouver and then Vancouver, Washington then?
- 1:16:57Kay Dunning: Washington, yeah.
- 1:16:58Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 1:16:58Kay Dunning: And I went to work for a travel agency for a short period of time.
- 1:17:03Kay Dunning: And I owe my travel agency experience to Randa Susansky.
- 1:17:07Kay Dunning: Yeah, she she got me uh training down at United Airlines Apollo Seattle.
- 1:17:11Douglas: Oh, really?
- 1:17:12Kay Dunning: Mm-hmm down in Seattle.
- 1:17:13Kay Dunning: Okay, and then I came back up and worked for her um one summer.
- 1:17:17Kay Dunning: But um so I worked for a travel agency in in uh Vancouver, Washington, and I showed up one day and it was locked up.
- 1:17:25Kay Dunning: It was like done.
- 1:17:28Kay Dunning: Somebody, yeah, somebody from the higher ups had come in and confiscated stuff, and yeah.
- 1:17:36Kay Dunning: And it was just closed down.
- 1:17:38Kay Dunning: Closed down.
- 1:17:39Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:17:39Kay Dunning: I don't know if it was a federal thing.
- 1:17:42Kay Dunning: I I don't know, I never heard what it was.
- 1:17:44Kay Dunning: I just didn't have a job.
- 1:17:47Douglas: So that's gotta be a little unsettling.
- 1:17:49Kay Dunning: It was a little weird.
- 1:17:50Kay Dunning: It was a little weird, and so luckily Rick had met a uh Horizon Air pilot that was heading up to Alaska Airlines, and his wife was the station secretary for um Hawaiian Airlines, and so she was going up to uh Seattle also.
- 1:18:05Kay Dunning: So her position came open, and so I went in and interviewed for and and got that working for Hawaiian Airlines.
- 1:18:11Douglas: That's pretty good airlines to work for.
- 1:18:13Douglas: Maybe not.
- 1:18:14Douglas: Well, it it was Do you do you not get do you get better discounts working for Hawaiian than you would from another carrier that's going to Hawaii?
- 1:18:22Douglas: Or is that something you guys weren't able to take advantage of of low-rate travel to Hawaii?
- 1:18:27Douglas: I never got to go to Hawaii on that because you're working for Hawaiian Airlines and you never got to go to Hawaii.
- 1:18:33Kay Dunning: No, I I've been there, but not on them.
- 1:18:35Kay Dunning: Not on them.
- 1:18:35Kay Dunning: No, because my boss was um our our branch in Portland was um my boss was the VP of the mainland operations, and he also handled all the military charters, the MAC charters.
- 1:18:48Kay Dunning: And so he was in Bahrain, he was in, you know, all over the world.
- 1:18:53Kay Dunning: And so every time he would be back, I'm like, I'm supposed to take a familiarization trip over to Hawaii.
- 1:18:59Kay Dunning: He's like, nope, I'm going out.
- 1:19:01Kay Dunning: So the were the years.
- 1:19:03Douglas: That was just wrong.
- 1:19:04Kay Dunning: That's what I thought too.
- 1:19:05Douglas: How long did you put up with that?
- 1:19:07Kay Dunning: I worked for there for two and a half years, I think it was.
- 1:19:11Douglas: Two and a half years without a trip to Hawaii, and you're working for Hawaii in your life.
- 1:19:14Kay Dunning: And I went into the sales department and I was supposed to get the illegal K.
- 1:19:17Kay Dunning: I I went to the sales department so I could work in so I could take my fan trips and was over there, and the secretary that he hired didn't do a good job, and he's like, I'm taking her back.
- 1:19:30Kay Dunning: And I'm like, ha ha, for Cripe's sake, come on.
- 1:19:34Kay Dunning: So, nope, never made it over there on them, but um, but it was a really fun experience, and I'm still in touch with um three of the people that I've been including him.
- 1:19:46Douglas: We've we've actually had uh um is he gonna watch this and we're gonna be bad mouthing him for not letting you go to Hawaii.
- 1:19:51Kay Dunning: Peter, you should let me go to Hawaii.
- 1:19:53Douglas: He owes you a trip to Hawaii.
- 1:19:55Kay Dunning: Uh you know what?
- 1:19:56Kay Dunning: I think you're right.
- 1:19:57Douglas: I think if you look at interest over the years and everything like that, not only should he pay for your flight over there, for your hotel, for sure.
- 1:20:04Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:20:04Kay Dunning: Well, you know, the funny thing about this guy is he was he had his fingers in everything and he was really into indie cars, which Rick is really into indie cars.
- 1:20:13Kay Dunning: He grew up going to the Indy 500 all the time.
- 1:20:16Kay Dunning: And so Peter was a um he was a partial owner of a driver.
- 1:20:22Kay Dunning: Really?
- 1:20:22Kay Dunning: And then he did hospitality.
- 1:20:24Douglas: Partial owner of a driver?
- 1:20:26Kay Dunning: DDA Tays was his name.
- 1:20:28Douglas: It was How do you how do you own the driver?
- 1:20:30Douglas: Well I thought you don't just Is it is this something that I don't understand?
- 1:20:35Kay Dunning: DDA's car, I guess.
- 1:20:36Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:20:37Kay Dunning: He was partial owner of a company that's of the car and everything in that superdriver was?
- 1:20:41Kay Dunning: Yeah, and they had the company.
- 1:20:42Douglas: Okay, that's how I thought uh I was like, yeah, this is something I didn't know.
- 1:20:45Kay Dunning: Um but then he uh also did hospitality tents.
- 1:20:49Kay Dunning: And so he had like um Emerson Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti and those guys, he would do hospitality tents for them down in the pit.
- 1:20:59Kay Dunning: So there was the Portland 200 every year at Father's Day, um, Father's Day.
- 1:21:04Kay Dunning: And so I would keep up with tickets.
- 1:21:07Douglas: He gave me free tickets into the pit and to to meet the hotel, but I think no, I'll take the hotel story number.
- 1:21:17Kay Dunning: I can get the free free hotel.
- 1:21:19Douglas: I'm just I'm just thinking that it's maybe just the hotel, not the flight, since you have the airline bit for fit.
- 1:21:24Kay Dunning: I'm good with that.
- 1:21:24Kay Dunning: You're good with that?
- 1:21:25Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah, that works for me.
- 1:21:26Douglas: Good luck with that, Kate.
- 1:21:28Kay Dunning: I'll get right on it.
- 1:21:29Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:21:30Douglas: Good luck with Peter paying for your hotel in Hawaii.
- 1:21:32Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:21:33Douglas: I think he does owe you.
- 1:21:34Douglas: That doesn't seem right that you can be two and a half of years working for Hawaiian Airlines and not get away.
- 1:21:39Douglas: And not get to go.
- 1:21:40Kay Dunning: Boy, my mom was heartbroken when I left there.
- 1:21:42Kay Dunning: She was like, no, I'm not done traveling the world.
- 1:21:46Douglas: So yeah, because that's the that some of those benefits are familiar, aren't they?
- 1:21:52Kay Dunning: It was very they were very good benefits.
- 1:21:55Kay Dunning: And especially since as a station secretary, um all the secretaries work together.
- 1:22:01Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 1:22:02Kay Dunning: So you pet my back, I'll pet your back, and stuff like that.
- 1:22:04Kay Dunning: And so we got first class passes to on all the other airlines.
- 1:22:10Kay Dunning: It was pretty nice.
- 1:22:12Kay Dunning: Pretty nice.
- 1:22:13Kay Dunning: Ask Rick how he got to some of his interviews.
- 1:22:15Kay Dunning: He got he got there first.
- 1:22:16Kay Dunning: His wife was setting him up.
- 1:22:18Kay Dunning: I did.
- 1:22:19Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:22:19Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:22:20Douglas: Good job.
- 1:22:21Kay Dunning: You know, when I worked at LAB, though, if he ever made me mad, yeah, he got put in the penalty box.
- 1:22:27Douglas: Smart.
- 1:22:28Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:28Kay Dunning: You know.
- 1:22:29Douglas: There should be consequences for our actions.
- 1:22:31Kay Dunning: Absolutely.
- 1:22:31Douglas: Both good and bad.
- 1:22:32Kay Dunning: Absolutely.
- 1:22:33Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:22:34Douglas: Apparently you've done very well training him because he seems to be very, very well behaved these days.
- 1:22:40Kay Dunning: He's a good guy.
- 1:22:41Kay Dunning: He's such a good guy.
- 1:22:42Kay Dunning: I you know, I love him so much that I married him twice.
- 1:22:45Kay Dunning: You know, we we renewed our vows at 20 years and just celebrated our 40th.
- 1:22:50Douglas: So so are you up to renew him again?
- 1:22:53Kay Dunning: If you're not going to be able to do I'm thinking every 20 years we should.
- 1:22:56Douglas: You should renew them.
- 1:22:57Kay Dunning: We should, yeah.
- 1:22:58Kay Dunning: Yeah, we should.
- 1:22:59Kay Dunning: We we won't, but we would.
- 1:23:02Douglas: We can we can go down, you can get a thing at the courthouse to get the license to do it.
- 1:23:09Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:10Kay Dunning: But you know, the people aren't there.
- 1:23:12Kay Dunning: The people that we needed to be there were there for the 20th, so yeah, you know how that is.
- 1:23:19Douglas: I know how that is.
- 1:23:21Douglas: If you decide that in memory of them you want to renew it before you leave.
- 1:23:26Kay Dunning: That's what I you know.
- 1:23:27Douglas: It could be in memory of them.
- 1:23:29Kay Dunning: Your mom can be there.
- 1:23:30Douglas: My mom will be there.
- 1:23:31Kay Dunning: Your mom was there both times.
- 1:23:33Douglas: I wasn't at either one of them, but I'll officiate for you.
- 1:23:36Douglas: I'll get I'll go get the paperwork I've done.
- 1:23:37Douglas: I Dylan and Dakota's wedding, they let me officiate that last year.
- 1:23:40Kay Dunning: Oh, did they really?
- 1:23:41Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:23:42Kay Dunning: Okay, okay, yeah.
- 1:23:44Douglas: So I have experience.
- 1:23:44Douglas: This would not be my first one.
- 1:23:46Kay Dunning: Not your first rodeo?
- 1:23:47Douglas: It would not be my first rodeo, it'd be the second.
- 1:23:49Kay Dunning: Second one.
- 1:23:50Douglas: This would be the second one.
- 1:23:51Kay Dunning: But well, this would be our third one, so we'd know if you were screwing up.
- 1:23:54Douglas: I'd know if I screwed up.
- 1:23:56Douglas: And the the price is right.
- 1:23:57Douglas: I mean, I charge nothing for this.
- 1:23:59Kay Dunning: Oh man, and we get ice cream too.
- 1:24:01Douglas: Well, that's only if you run into the bay.
- 1:24:03Kay Dunning: Well, what better way to do that?
- 1:24:05Douglas: Well, celebrate a renewal of your vows and to run in and go swimming down by the cruise ship dock, and then I'll have your ice cream at the top.
- 1:24:12Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 1:24:12Kay Dunning: Yep, I like it.
- 1:24:13Kay Dunning: I like it.
- 1:24:13Douglas: So before you guys leave, if you if you can talk Rick into this, I need like a day's notice.
- 1:24:18Kay Dunning: We need nine days, we've got nine days left.
- 1:24:19Kay Dunning: We've got nine left.
- 1:24:21Douglas: I need at least a day's notice to prepare myself to come up with something meaningful to say for 40 years.
- 1:24:28Kay Dunning: Boy, good luck with that one.
- 1:24:30Kay Dunning: Got it.
- 1:24:32Douglas: 24 hours I can come up with all sorts of crazy stuff.
- 1:24:34Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:24:39Douglas: See, we should have done this interview before the kids got here, because if the kids were here, that would have been better to have the renewal of the vows when the kids were here.
- 1:24:46Kay Dunning: Michael walked me down the aisle at the 2011.
- 1:24:48Kay Dunning: At the 20.
- 1:24:48Kay Dunning: Yeah, and Ryan was my my little mate.
- 1:24:50Douglas: Call them up.
- 1:24:51Douglas: Tell them they need to get here before the end of the before the end of the month.
- 1:24:54Kay Dunning: Sorry, honey.
- 1:24:55Kay Dunning: I know you have patience right now, but can you come up?
- 1:24:57Douglas: That was way more important than you saving lives.
- 1:25:00Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:25:00Douglas: You need to come back up here.
- 1:25:02Kay Dunning: Ryan would be here in a heartbeat, she'd do it.
- 1:25:04Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:25:04Douglas: All right.
- 1:25:05Douglas: I'll let you work on that.
- 1:25:06Douglas: You just I'm here if you need that.
- 1:25:08Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:25:09Kay Dunning: I don't I don't know.
- 1:25:10Kay Dunning: I don't know if that's gonna happen again.
- 1:25:12Kay Dunning: Do we get presents again?
- 1:25:13Kay Dunning: I can we get a discount on stuff here at the sports shop?
- 1:25:17Kay Dunning: Because then then I would say yes.
- 1:25:19Douglas: All right, so I'm already I'm already officiating for free.
- 1:25:22Douglas: I've got ice cream for you.
- 1:25:23Douglas: Now you want discounts too?
- 1:25:26Kay Dunning: We'll take discounts instead of a cake.
- 1:25:27Kay Dunning: How about that?
- 1:25:28Kay Dunning: Instead of a cake.
- 1:25:28Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:25:29Douglas: Well, I wasn't gonna bake, I wasn't gonna make a cake.
- 1:25:31Douglas: So this is we might have we might have further discussions about this cake.
- 1:25:35Kay Dunning: I think this might have to be a next summer thing.
- 1:25:37Douglas: Well, you can do 41.
- 1:25:38Kay Dunning: It works.
- 1:25:39Kay Dunning: It works.
- 1:25:40Douglas: We'll plan it for when the kids are here.
- 1:25:41Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:25:42Douglas: Then you have the grandkids here too.
- 1:25:44Kay Dunning: Man.
- 1:25:44Douglas: Because they weren't at they weren't at the first or the 20th.
- 1:25:47Kay Dunning: Uh no.
- 1:25:48Douglas: So this is so this is you're doing it for your grandkids so they can experience this moment with you.
- 1:25:52Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:25:52Douglas: You're making memories with the grandkids, Kay.
- 1:25:55Kay Dunning: I'll let I'll let little Louie walk me down the aisle.
- 1:25:59Douglas: I'll hook him up with a fishing rod.
- 1:26:00Douglas: He can he can carry the rings on the fishing rod and he can cast them to cast them.
- 1:26:05Kay Dunning: He's gonna need a new one.
- 1:26:06Kay Dunning: You know what happened to the other one.
- 1:26:08Douglas: Did he break it?
- 1:26:09Kay Dunning: No.
- 1:26:09Douglas: Did Rick break it?
- 1:26:10Kay Dunning: No, it's at the end of the dock on the sport dock.
- 1:26:13Kay Dunning: What is it?
- 1:26:14Douglas: Did he chuck it off the dock?
- 1:26:15Kay Dunning: No, no, it uh the um weight was a little heavier when he caught a fish.
- 1:26:21Kay Dunning: Oh really?
- 1:26:22Kay Dunning: And it just it I think it had some had some help for my son, maybe.
- 1:26:29Douglas: We'll we'll take care of him.
- 1:26:31Kay Dunning: Yeah, he he kind of misses his Spider-Man Zed pill.
- 1:26:34Douglas: When he comes up next year, we'll we'll take care of him.
- 1:26:36Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:26:37Kay Dunning: He'll be asking for a bigger rod then.
- 1:26:38Kay Dunning: He'll be five almost.
- 1:26:40Douglas: We'll make sure we got some for him.
- 1:26:42Douglas: We'll take care of him.
- 1:26:43Douglas: So So out of Hawaiian then?
- 1:26:46Douglas: Then you're in Vancouver.
- 1:26:49Douglas: Is Rick did Rick get transferred somewhere else?
- 1:26:52Douglas: Is that why he left Hawaiian?
- 1:26:53Kay Dunning: We bought a house up in Battleground, Washington.
- 1:26:55Kay Dunning: That was our very first house.
- 1:26:56Kay Dunning: And um from there he went to US Air.
- 1:27:02Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 1:27:02Kay Dunning: Um he tried to get on Alaska Airlines.
- 1:27:04Kay Dunning: They won't hire they wouldn't hire from within.
- 1:27:07Kay Dunning: They didn't want to Horizon was not a feeder into Alaska at that time.
- 1:27:11Kay Dunning: So he went down to US Air in uh North Carolina, which was was it like eight days after the merger with Piedmont Airlines.
- 1:27:20Kay Dunning: So I think he actually got hired by Piedmont, and that became US Air.
- 1:27:24Kay Dunning: So he was down there in August, and that November I got I went down there because I stayed working.
- 1:27:32Kay Dunning: And uh and so he worked for them for seven years, I think.
- 1:27:38Kay Dunning: But he got laid off after um his first first year, I think.
- 1:27:42Kay Dunning: He was laid off for a year and a half or 13 months, I think it was.
- 1:27:46Kay Dunning: And in that time we had Ryan.
- 1:27:50Kay Dunning: And so he stayed home with Ryan while he was laid off, and I um worked for um a bank.
- 1:27:56Kay Dunning: Okay, and um and then Got his job back and we had Michael and I was still working for the bank.
- 1:28:05Kay Dunning: And one day, while I was at work, my or I don't remember if I was at work or not, but our neighbor called up, and her daughter and Michael were best friends.
- 1:28:14Kay Dunning: We'd moved into a new house at that point.
- 1:28:17Kay Dunning: And um the the daughter, the little two-year-old, had cut her forehead.
- 1:28:22Kay Dunning: And so her mom called up and she's like, Hey, can you come to the hospital and just kind of help me with her?
- 1:28:28Kay Dunning: It's you know, I'm kind of freaking out a little bit.
- 1:28:30Kay Dunning: And so I'm like, sure, sure, I'll go.
- 1:28:32Kay Dunning: And I'm helping this little girl and just kind of calming her down.
- 1:28:36Kay Dunning: And I'm watching this, this vein is like pulsing.
- 1:28:40Kay Dunning: I'm like, that's the coolest thing I've ever seen.
- 1:28:43Kay Dunning: I went home.
- 1:28:46Douglas: Poor little girl's bleeding about it.
- 1:28:48Douglas: Oh my god, this is wonderful.
- 1:28:50Kay Dunning: I look at I'm like, oh wow, I this is weird, but I really I I think I like science and anatomy.
- 1:28:58Kay Dunning: I like this.
- 1:28:58Kay Dunning: I went home and I told Rick, I said, I'm quitting the bank and I want to go to I want to be a physician's assistant.
- 1:29:06Kay Dunning: Well, it's a brand new program at that time.
- 1:29:08Kay Dunning: Uh-huh.
- 1:29:08Kay Dunning: So you had to have experience in order to get into the schools.
- 1:29:12Douglas: Um, you know, now it's I was helping this girl at the hospital just the other day.
- 1:29:17Kay Dunning: I've got a smart Yeah, yeah, I get to and and I know how to kiss boo-boos.
- 1:29:25Kay Dunning: Um, so I I looked at and I said, I'll keep working at the bank, but um the kids were one and three at the time, and I didn't have my sciences for my my bachelor's degree.
- 1:29:36Kay Dunning: Um, so I needed a whole bunch of sciences to get in.
- 1:29:41Kay Dunning: I thought, well, if I need experience, I'll go to nursing school.
- 1:29:44Kay Dunning: So I decided I'm gonna go get all these sciences taken care of.
- 1:29:49Kay Dunning: And so I started, you know, I anatomy one, anatomy two, and uh did all the classes.
- 1:29:56Kay Dunning: Never take microbiology when you have little kids.
- 1:29:58Kay Dunning: It's like you're gonna die for whatever you're gonna be putting in your mouth.
- 1:30:02Kay Dunning: Um, but um did all those, and then I got accepted into nursing school and had started my first semester of it, and I went, I had a choice of doing the bachelor's degree in nursing for two years or my associates for two years.
- 1:30:19Kay Dunning: And one would think that you would do the bachelor's, but I chose the associate's route because it was at a teaching hospital.
- 1:30:25Kay Dunning: Okay, and so we got a lot of experience as opposed to Yeah, and the the the um the people that I met that were doing the bachelor's program and a lot of book learning, but they they came down to our hospital to get the experience, and so um yeah, so I got into that nursing nursing class, and I think I don't remember how many there were of us, maybe 22, 25.
- 1:30:50Kay Dunning: And I was I think the older half, I think I was 29 when I started it.
- 1:30:58Kay Dunning: And um I really, really enjoyed it.
- 1:31:02Kay Dunning: Um, but um one day my uh clinical instructor, there were six of us in our small group, and she was going around the group telling everybody, you're gonna, I think you're gonna go into OB and you're gonna go do this.
- 1:31:14Kay Dunning: I'm like, what am I what do you think about me?
- 1:31:17Kay Dunning: And she's like, Oh, you're gonna be a trauma nurse, honey, because if it's not happening like that, you you're gonna get bored.
- 1:31:22Kay Dunning: It's like that's a lot of pressure to put on a first-year nursing student.
- 1:31:26Kay Dunning: So um finished up my first semester, and I came home one day, and on our answering machine, there was that's how old this is.
- 1:31:35Kay Dunning: Um, on our answering machine, there was a message, hi, this is Northwest Airlines.
- 1:31:39Kay Dunning: We'd like to offer Richard Dunning an interview in Minneapolis.
- 1:31:43Kay Dunning: We're in Charlotte, North Carolina.
- 1:31:46Douglas: Delete, he can't do this, I gotta finish this program.
- 1:31:49Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 1:31:50Kay Dunning: Usually and we'd move nine times the first 12 years we were married.
- 1:31:54Kay Dunning: And so, um, and so and one of those was to Minnesota eventually, but he came home and I'm like, you want to explain this to me?
- 1:32:03Kay Dunning: He's like, Yeah, well, you know, I just applied and and uh it's not gonna go anywhere.
- 1:32:09Kay Dunning: And and then he interviewed, and and and then they're like, we'd like to offer you a job.
- 1:32:16Kay Dunning: So that December he was offered a job at uh at Northwest Airlines.
- 1:32:21Kay Dunning: And it's like, I I can't I can't do nursing school if you're because he was gonna be up in Minnesota um like six out of the seven days a week.
- 1:32:32Kay Dunning: Like I I can't do this by myself.
- 1:32:35Kay Dunning: So so I s I dropped out of it, and he had a really good reason for doing it though.
- 1:32:41Kay Dunning: US Air was getting ready to lay him off again, and who knows when we would have gotten called back.
- 1:32:46Kay Dunning: So it it turned out to be a wonderful decision.
- 1:32:50Kay Dunning: But it was one of those things like I I live vicariously through my son, you know.
- 1:32:55Kay Dunning: Yeah, he's a as a doctor, and he rolls his eyes at me, he's like, Mom, you you don't remember any of your stuff, do you?
- 1:33:01Kay Dunning: No, no.
- 1:33:03Kay Dunning: But again, I can still kiss a boo-boo.
- 1:33:06Douglas: I can still kiss a boo-boo.
- 1:33:07Douglas: Grandma's here.
- 1:33:08Kay Dunning: So, yeah, yeah.
- 1:33:08Kay Dunning: So, um, so when we moved up to Minnesota, um Michael was four at the time, and Ryan was seven and just um in second grade, and he was going into preschool.
- 1:33:20Kay Dunning: Or he had been in a preschool, and so we found a new preschool up there that our neighbors suggested brand new.
- 1:33:27Kay Dunning: And that February, one of the teachers, there were two teachers, one of them went on maternity leave, and uh so I became a a long-term sub for her.
- 1:33:36Kay Dunning: Twenty-seven years later, I was the longest long-term sub they ever had.
- 1:33:40Kay Dunning: So so and I swore I'd never be a teacher because my parents were both teachers.
- 1:33:45Kay Dunning: Yeah, and um or let me back that my mom was a teacher, my dad has had his teaching license, but never got a job in the in the school district.
- 1:33:54Kay Dunning: So um um, so uh yeah, I I was like, huh.
- 1:33:59Kay Dunning: When you say never about teaching or doing something, God starts laughing.
- 1:34:03Kay Dunning: And that's what you end up doing a lot of times.
- 1:34:06Douglas: So always comes around.
- 1:34:08Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:34:08Douglas: Do you do you think about nursing still?
- 1:34:11Douglas: Have you thought about it?
- 1:34:12Kay Dunning: I never wanted to do the nursing part.
- 1:34:14Kay Dunning: The the nursing was um simply a means of getting into PA school, and my thought was as a PA, I would be working with the nurses, so I wanted to have a better understanding so I would have a better rapport with them.
- 1:34:27Kay Dunning: Um so yeah, I think it I yeah, I I'm not going to go do it now.
- 1:34:32Kay Dunning: My memory's not as good as.
- 1:34:34Douglas: But you ever wonder what I mean things work out the way they were supposed to be put put put you where you're supposed to be.
- 1:34:41Kay Dunning: Yeah, you know, I I got to be home with my kids in the summers.
- 1:34:45Kay Dunning: We traveled a lot.
- 1:34:46Kay Dunning: Um if I was if one of them was sick, I could stay home from work if I needed to as a teach uh as a preschool teacher, or um we actually had a little cot and there was a there was a TV with a little VCR.
- 1:35:02Kay Dunning: If Michael was sick, it was mostly Michael because um Ryan Ryan was pretty healthy, I think.
- 1:35:07Kay Dunning: Um, but I would just bring him to work with me and put him in the hallway or the classroom across the hallway.
- 1:35:12Kay Dunning: It was an empty classroom.
- 1:35:13Douglas: Okay.
- 1:35:14Kay Dunning: Okay, if you need me, let me know.
- 1:35:15Douglas: Yeah, mom's right across the hall.
- 1:35:17Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:18Kay Dunning: So it was I mean, it turned out to be a really good thing.
- 1:35:21Kay Dunning: And um I have families that I've stayed in touch with my preschool families, that they're now having children.
- 1:35:29Kay Dunning: And I've gotten to teach a couple of of the kids of kids that I've taught.
- 1:35:33Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:35:34Kay Dunning: So it's it's a it's a pretty special thing.
- 1:35:37Kay Dunning: Um it just took me a long time to come around to, I guess, what I was supposed to be doing.
- 1:35:42Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:35:43Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:35:44Douglas: And so, but you're not gonna do that this year.
- 1:35:46Kay Dunning: I I actually got a text uh yesterday, hey, uh, what's your April schedule like?
- 1:35:51Kay Dunning: Can you sub?
- 1:35:54Douglas: Like well, last time I decided to sub it was 27 years.
- 1:35:56Douglas: Yeah, yeah, yes.
- 1:35:58Kay Dunning: I'll do a short-term sub.
- 1:35:59Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:01Kay Dunning: So so yeah, it's kind of fun that way.
- 1:36:03Kay Dunning: But um, my my parents both loved it that I became a teacher and my my dad laughed at me.
- 1:36:10Douglas: Yeah, I can see them taking both of them taking delight in their daughter becoming a teacher.
- 1:36:15Kay Dunning: Yeah, so you know, I might I'll go back to my dad, circle back to my dad one more time.
- 1:36:20Kay Dunning: But um, you know, his petroleum um product work is um he became the the uh city um water and wastewater treatment manager.
- 1:36:29Kay Dunning: I don't know if you knew that.
- 1:36:31Douglas: I didn't know that, no.
- 1:36:31Kay Dunning: Yeah, he did that for several years.
- 1:36:33Kay Dunning: And uh so the little is it green building, blue building, whatever color is in the color deficient dude that I don't know.
- 1:36:41Kay Dunning: Well, the one uh going up to the fairgrounds, whatever color that building is the is the building that he used to work out of.
- 1:36:46Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 1:36:47Kay Dunning: And so I joy button's like, oh yeah, I remember that.
- 1:36:50Douglas: Yeah, I did not remember that he had done that.
- 1:36:52Kay Dunning: And that was all from his um science that he learned um doing doing the stuff for the tank farm.
- 1:36:59Kay Dunning: At the tank farm.
- 1:36:59Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:37:00Kay Dunning: But um, and then part of his reason for um quitting at the tank farm too was um he was playing bridge with a uh he and my mom both play bridge, and they would play with um like people that people that came into town, um, whether it was off the uh logging ships or um Ted and Mimi Greg had a lot of friends that would come into town and stuff.
- 1:37:23Kay Dunning: So he was playing with a doctor one time, and the doctor looked at my dad's fingers, and he noticed a broadening of his fingertips.
- 1:37:32Kay Dunning: Weird thing to notice, but when he's playing cards, I mean that's what this he looked at my dad and he goes, You need to go to the um hospital and you need to go like immediately, like not that night, but within two.
- 1:37:46Douglas: He's playing bridge and this doctor's looking at his fingers.
- 1:37:49Kay Dunning: And he's he sees that his fingertips on the ends are a little bit broader than they should be.
- 1:37:56Douglas: And how does he know he doesn't just have fat fingers?
- 1:37:58Douglas: It's that is crazy that he picks that up.
- 1:38:03Kay Dunning: Yeah, and so he's like, you need to go see a doctor, and you need to go see one very, very soon.
- 1:38:07Kay Dunning: Like, not next month, like this month.
- 1:38:10Kay Dunning: And so my dad flew down to Seattle, and what happened was um the petroleum products had had killed off part of um both of his lungs.
- 1:38:19Kay Dunning: So he had a third of one.
- 1:38:21Douglas: And that showed up in the fingertips?
- 1:38:22Kay Dunning: Lack of oxygen.
- 1:38:23Douglas: Lacygenoxy?
- 1:38:24Douglas: Yep really lack of oxygen, and there's a name for it, and I I don't know what it's just by him being out of the tank farm and the job that he was doing around the petroleum.
- 1:38:31Kay Dunning: Exposure around those products, yeah.
- 1:38:32Kay Dunning: And smoking.
- 1:38:34Douglas: Okay.
- 1:38:35Kay Dunning: He smoked four packs a day of Marlborough's four packs a day, all the way through every one of them.
- 1:38:39Kay Dunning: Yeah, yep.
- 1:38:41Douglas: So he Good thing he's not doing that now, that'd cost a fortune.
- 1:38:45Kay Dunning: Oh I know.
- 1:38:45Kay Dunning: Not only the health benefits.
- 1:38:47Kay Dunning: If we could have just put that money into four packs a day.
- 1:38:51Kay Dunning: All the way through every cigarette.
- 1:38:52Kay Dunning: It wasn't like a, you know, and then put it out.
- 1:38:54Kay Dunning: No, it was all the way through.
- 1:38:56Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 1:38:57Kay Dunning: So um, yeah, so he went down and he had a third of one lug removed and like a quarter of the other one.
- 1:39:03Kay Dunning: And um, excuse me, um, that kind of reset his course too.
- 1:39:11Kay Dunning: He had to stop smoking.
- 1:39:13Kay Dunning: So my mom and there was a guy named Jack Van Huzen in town.
- 1:39:18Douglas: Yeah, artist.
- 1:39:19Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:39:19Kay Dunning: Um, he had the uh where the telegraph offices and the fort had his art shop there.
- 1:39:24Kay Dunning: His wife Nancy, ex-wife, whatever, uh Nancy also was a big smoker.
- 1:39:29Kay Dunning: And so my mom and Jack bet Nancy and my dad, um, you know, if you guys can go a month without smoking, uh-huh, we will take you out to a really nice dinner like a 10-mile or something like that.
- 1:39:45Kay Dunning: Um, if one of you smokes, you have to pay the other one a thousand dollars.
- 1:39:49Kay Dunning: Well, this was back in the 70s.
- 1:39:50Kay Dunning: That was a lot of money.
- 1:39:51Kay Dunning: It was a lot of money.
- 1:39:53Kay Dunning: And they both made the 30 days.
- 1:39:55Douglas: Okay.
- 1:39:55Kay Dunning: Nancy went back to smoking, my dad did not.
- 1:39:58Douglas: Uh-huh.
- 1:39:59Kay Dunning: But before he um right, before he s uh quit smoking, or before he went started the bet, probably one of the smartest things I think he ever did.
- 1:40:07Kay Dunning: He had me puff on one of his cigarettes when I was seven years old.
- 1:40:11Kay Dunning: Absolutely the most disgusting thing I've ever done.
- 1:40:15Kay Dunning: I never wanted to smoke.
- 1:40:17Kay Dunning: Oh, yeah.
- 1:40:18Kay Dunning: So you know, you get to high school and it's like, oh yeah.
- 1:40:20Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:40:22Kay Dunning: Never, never, never, never because of what of that.
- 1:40:26Kay Dunning: Um, but yeah, he quit smoking, and as a result, your your uh taste buds start coming back.
- 1:40:32Kay Dunning: And um he defa just uh figured out that he really liked the taste of food.
- 1:40:39Kay Dunning: And he liked cooking, and that's he know he never really cooked before that.
- 1:40:44Kay Dunning: And so that's when he started cooking, and then he got so good that he started cooking all the big dinners in town, you know, fireman's ball, Legion stuff, all of those, yeah.
- 1:40:55Douglas: So you were seven when he quit?
- 1:40:57Douglas: Mm-hmm.
- 1:40:58Douglas: Yeah, and he before he quit, did your dad allow him to smoke in the house?
- 1:41:02Douglas: Or did your mom allow him to smoke in the house?
- 1:41:05Kay Dunning: Yes, she yes, she did.
- 1:41:06Kay Dunning: And he had memorises of that of just the secondhand smoke and oh yeah, and then he would have so my mom was the president of the Cancer Society.
- 1:41:14Douglas: Yeah, that's the American Cancer Society.
- 1:41:16Douglas: She was always around doing the fundraising.
- 1:41:17Kay Dunning: She was the local one, and then she became the state one also.
- 1:41:20Kay Dunning: And so my dad would have um poker or whatever card games at his uh at our house, like I don't know, once a month, once every other month.
- 1:41:29Kay Dunning: And she had this um big psychedelic poster on our kitchen door.
- 1:41:34Kay Dunning: We had a door that closed off to the living room.
- 1:41:36Kay Dunning: Uh-huh.
- 1:41:36Kay Dunning: And big psychedelic thing about, you know, don't smoke, you know, you this these are your lungs on uh with smoke and stuff.
- 1:41:43Kay Dunning: And so, you know, you close the door and then you'd open it up, and the room was the kitchen was just blue.
- 1:41:48Kay Dunning: Blue was smoked.
- 1:41:48Kay Dunning: Yeah, it was pretty bad.
- 1:41:51Kay Dunning: It was pretty bad.
- 1:41:52Kay Dunning: Um and the smokers cough, you know, in the middle of the night hearing that is just it's not a good sound.
- 1:41:58Douglas: Did that did that go away after a while?
- 1:42:00Douglas: Or do you remember that throughout your childhood?
- 1:42:04Kay Dunning: It I think it went away, but I I had dreams of it, you know, even as an adult of of um of that.
- 1:42:10Kay Dunning: And uh it it was just one of those, yeah, things that just kind of not not uh not not good dreams.
- 1:42:17Douglas: Did he did he ever tell you why he started smoking?
- 1:42:21Kay Dunning: Uh you know, he was a military thing because a lot of people start in the military.
- 1:42:26Kay Dunning: It was the early 50s, you know, and it was cool, and he he had, you know, the greased back hair and the cigarette behind the ear, and it was just a cool thing.
- 1:42:34Kay Dunning: That's what everybody did.
- 1:42:35Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:42:36Douglas: And at that time doctors were telling you it was healthy.
- 1:42:38Kay Dunning: Yeah, well the doctors were smoking.
- 1:42:40Kay Dunning: I mean, yeah.
- 1:42:42Kay Dunning: Excuse me, let me smoke by your oxygen tank, please.
- 1:42:45Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:42:46Kay Dunning: Um, yeah, so um, yeah, he went on to do all the big dinners, but he went to he decided to go to um college um because he had never never done that.
- 1:42:58Kay Dunning: He you know, went straight into the military.
- 1:43:00Kay Dunning: Went to college and um went to Juneau every week.
- 1:43:04Kay Dunning: He would take classes down at Juneau to get his associate's degree, and then my mom took a sabbatical in '74 to '75.
- 1:43:14Kay Dunning: And we went down to Oregon so he could finish up his bachelor's degree, and she started in on her master's.
- 1:43:20Douglas: Okay.
- 1:43:20Kay Dunning: So um, yeah, and so he came back and he did his student teaching at like Floyd Dryden middle school.
- 1:43:25Kay Dunning: Um he did tell me a story of uh he was teaching English and he'd just been going over may I and can I, the difference between the two.
- 1:43:34Kay Dunning: And he said the next person that says can I, when they mean may I, is really gonna regret it.
- 1:43:40Kay Dunning: And uh so this guy, the kid raises his hand, yes.
- 1:43:44Kay Dunning: Ah, Mr.
- 1:43:45Kay Dunning: Haas, can I go to the bathroom?
- 1:43:47Kay Dunning: Can I?
- 1:43:48Kay Dunning: Can you?
- 1:43:49Kay Dunning: I'm sure you can.
- 1:43:50Kay Dunning: May you give me 10 push-ups first.
- 1:43:52Kay Dunning: And he said the kid did him with his legs crossed.
- 1:43:55Kay Dunning: So but um he he came up here and he just was never able to uh get a job in the school district.
- 1:44:03Kay Dunning: So that's when he went to work for the city and and uh that's where his career went.
- 1:44:08Kay Dunning: So yeah.
- 1:44:10Douglas: Yeah, I did not remember that about that was when I was much younger.
- 1:44:16Douglas: You were very little, yeah.
- 1:44:17Douglas: I was very little.
- 1:44:18Douglas: Although actually some of those time frames I wasn't quite so little.
- 1:44:23Douglas: So when did he retire from the city?
- 1:44:27Kay Dunning: Well, I graduated in 83, so he I would guess 82, 83, somewhere because that's when he went blind from his diabetes.
- 1:44:37Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:44:38Douglas: Um, and then see that's seventh, eighth grade, seventh, sixth, seventh grade for me.
- 1:44:42Douglas: So I was I was little but not that little.
- 1:44:46Kay Dunning: Yeah, young enough to not get the biggest.
- 1:44:48Kay Dunning: Young enough not to know what the heck's going on.
- 1:44:49Kay Dunning: That's not where your focus was or anything like that.
- 1:44:52Douglas: I didn't care who's taking care of the water as long as it was clean coming out of the tap.
- 1:44:55Douglas: Actually, we were on a well, I didn't care.
- 1:44:57Kay Dunning: Oh yeah, you didn't care.
- 1:44:58Douglas: We're at a well, it didn't matter who's water can suck, I don't care.
- 1:45:03Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:04Kay Dunning: So the um because of his um military background, and that's that's what led to the um diabetes coming on sooner and um losing the sight and stuff like that, the disabled or he was disabled American vet, or he was a DAV.
- 1:45:19Kay Dunning: And so they sent him down to Palo Alto, California, um to teach him how to live with his blindness.
- 1:45:25Kay Dunning: And like, you know, you put a rubber band on the salt shaker so you know which one's salt and pepper, things like that.
- 1:45:31Kay Dunning: Um but they also paid for him to go to um back to school.
- 1:45:36Kay Dunning: He went to school down in uh it's north Edmunds area, somewhere Edmonds Community College maybe for travel and tourism.
- 1:45:45Kay Dunning: And he came back up here and started a uh little building, a little office called uh or business called Tickets, tours, trips and things.
- 1:45:52Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:45:53Kay Dunning: And um, and it's it's really nice talking to uh Glenn Jacobson, Jen Glenn and Allison.
- 1:45:58Kay Dunning: They said that he really helped um get keep the fjord lines running um uh when they first started out because he had the phone, people could call and get their tickets there while they're busy running the boat and stuff, and and he would sell ferry tickets in town and and so people didn't have to go all the way out to the ferry terminal and stuff.
- 1:46:17Douglas: So pre-internet days exactly just do everything online.
- 1:46:21Douglas: You actually had to find somebody to get the colour.
- 1:46:23Kay Dunning: Right, that you that you could get a ticket from.
- 1:46:24Kay Dunning: So yeah, so he did all that, and um and then he uh got real active with the American Disabilities Um or Alaskan Disabilities Act and got the contract to do the candy machines, the vending machines out at the ferry terminal and a couple others in town.
- 1:46:40Kay Dunning: So I remember when I'd be here for the summertime, I'd drive them around and stock the vending machines.
- 1:46:46Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:46:47Kay Dunning: So so yeah, it was I mean it's this is a great, a great place to to grow up.
- 1:46:54Douglas: Circling to your other parent, your mom.
- 1:46:57Kay Dunning: My mom.
- 1:46:58Douglas: So she when she left here, she moved with you guys to Minnesota, correct?
- 1:47:03Kay Dunning: She did.
- 1:47:03Douglas: So her last few years you guys had her in Minnesota.
- 1:47:07Kay Dunning: Eleven years we had eleven years.
- 1:47:08Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:47:09Kay Dunning: I I uh brought her back up here two summers, and then I just I I just couldn't do it.
- 1:47:16Kay Dunning: It was um she needed a lot more not not attention, but she needed to be um constantly entertained.
- 1:47:26Kay Dunning: And you know, you come up here, it's like you work all year, you come up for a little vacation, but you don't get a vacation and stuff.
- 1:47:34Kay Dunning: So um but I am forever grateful that I got to have her down there um in Minnesota because it was it was complete.
- 1:47:45Douglas: You got some more time with her, but then also your kids got time with her as well.
- 1:47:49Kay Dunning: They did, they did, and it was a role reversal, and God bless Rick, I could not have done it without him.
- 1:47:55Kay Dunning: I mean, he was the best son-in-law ever, and he helped me with every aspect um of of taking care of her.
- 1:48:02Kay Dunning: And and she was in a uh a really nice um place, but you know, we were over there three, four times a week, um, because y you know, these people some people get parked in a place and there's nobody that comes and checks on them.
- 1:48:16Kay Dunning: And it's just really heartbreaking to see that.
- 1:48:18Kay Dunning: But um, but yeah, it was it was really nice.
- 1:48:21Kay Dunning: Um near the end when um about two months before she passed away, she it was at the hospital and and the ER doc happened to be specialized in seniors.
- 1:48:32Kay Dunning: And he's like, Oh, she doesn't need this medicine, this medicine, this medicine.
- 1:48:35Kay Dunning: And he got to one that I call the happy drug.
- 1:48:38Kay Dunning: I'm like, you take that one away, you're gonna be dealing with me too.
- 1:48:41Kay Dunning: You're gonna be needing some medicine.
- 1:48:42Kay Dunning: No, no, no, no, no, you don't get to take that one away.
- 1:48:45Kay Dunning: So, but she was, yeah, smiley up to the end.
- 1:48:48Kay Dunning: So, um, and she was she was always a really supportive mom.
- 1:48:52Douglas: I mean, both my parents were, so got me music lessons and well uh the thing I remember about both of them is they they for me the I didn't have a ton of interaction with them, but they're always involved in things in the community.
- 1:49:05Douglas: They're always different organizations or whatever, they were always stepping up and doing like your dad's cooking for all these organizations, your mom with the American Cancer Society.
- 1:49:15Douglas: I think she was she in the women's club too.
- 1:49:17Kay Dunning: Women's Club, the BPW, the yeah, all of them.
- 1:49:21Douglas: Seemed there in all those organizations and and helping out in a lot of ways.
- 1:49:25Kay Dunning: And that was the Legion was the biggest one for me.
- 1:49:27Douglas: For for me, just looking at that as a young kid, and just you just assume, because there's so many people that I knew growing up that were in those positions that were always volunteering.
- 1:49:37Douglas: Yeah, John Bruce, the Boy Scout, Steve McPheeter boy the just the things that they were giving back to, it's just kind of like that's what you're supposed to do.
- 1:49:46Kay Dunning: That's exactly.
- 1:49:47Kay Dunning: I mean, you you were raised to you volunteer.
- 1:49:50Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:49:51Douglas: I just figured that's what everybody did.
- 1:49:52Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:49:53Kay Dunning: Because so many people then I find out now that that's not necessarily the case.
- 1:49:56Kay Dunning: Not necessarily the case.
- 1:49:58Kay Dunning: No.
- 1:49:58Kay Dunning: It's sure.
- 1:49:59Kay Dunning: It sure revitalizes Rick and me.
- 1:50:01Kay Dunning: I mean we volunteer down south too.
- 1:50:03Kay Dunning: But Rick I don't know that Rick grew up doing that very much with his family, but um he sure does a lot here and and uh we um I remember this year when we went to the fireman's barbecue, my mom and I on the way over it's like I bet we'll it'll be nice to see Rick and Kay.
- 1:50:19Douglas: And we get there like Rick and Kay aren't here.
- 1:50:22Douglas: What's going on?
- 1:50:25Kay Dunning: You know, we stuck stay back for our son's graduation from his residency.
- 1:50:28Douglas: That's an important thing, though.
- 1:50:30Douglas: You were celebrating your 40th wedding anniversary.
- 1:50:32Douglas: He was graduating from his residency.
- 1:50:35Douglas: And wasn't it your birthday or something too?
- 1:50:37Kay Dunning: Or it's my birthday, yeah.
- 1:50:38Kay Dunning: Yeah, it's it's our anniversary.
- 1:50:40Douglas: Yeah, it's all only valid reasons.
- 1:50:43Kay Dunning: It was my favorite thing last year.
- 1:50:44Kay Dunning: Um, somebody asked me how I celebrated my 60th birthday last year, and I'm like, well, we were at the barbecue.
- 1:50:49Kay Dunning: We were at the barbecue, and that's and that's we got married on my 21st birthday.
- 1:50:53Kay Dunning: Okay, and so um, so we're at the barbecue, and then that night they had the uh community the Tocat Commit Um Valley Community Foundation had their thing out at the um Tookat retreat, and they I walk in and there's this entire wall of desserts, and I'm like, this is the best birthday anniversary ever.
- 1:51:11Kay Dunning: I got brisket for lunch, and I get this for dessert.
- 1:51:14Kay Dunning: It was awesome.
- 1:51:16Kay Dunning: And Rick didn't have to do anything.
- 1:51:18Douglas: Everybody's celebrating my birthday.
- 1:51:20Kay Dunning: I know.
- 1:51:20Douglas: How did they all know?
- 1:51:22Kay Dunning: I just felt special.
- 1:51:23Kay Dunning: So me and Melina Shields, you know.
- 1:51:26Douglas: Yep.
- 1:51:27Douglas: So we're now that you and Rick are retired, you're spent it's you're spent a little bit more time in Haines the last few summers.
- 1:51:35Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:51:35Douglas: A little bit longer.
- 1:51:36Douglas: Got a couple grandkids in Minnesota.
- 1:51:39Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:51:40Kay Dunning: Where do you where's boy Rick is really, really, really pushing for the uh six months and a day up here?
- 1:51:46Douglas: Oh, is he?
- 1:51:47Douglas: Yeah, he's he wants he wants to spend more time, right?
- 1:51:52Kay Dunning: And you can still see the grandkids that way, like two weeks there, or two weeks here, two weeks there.
- 1:51:56Kay Dunning: I don't know, honey.
- 1:51:58Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:51:59Douglas: So we're still still in negotiations, is what I'm hearing.
- 1:52:02Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:52:03Douglas: Or is he made up his mind, and you'll have dual residents, you'll have really duh.
- 1:52:08Douglas: You'll be a Minnesota resident, he'll be Alaska resident.
- 1:52:11Kay Dunning: You think we've had 40 years of marriage from him making up his mind?
- 1:52:15Douglas: Yeah, I know where this is going.
- 1:52:17Douglas: I know where this is going.
- 1:52:19Kay Dunning: Happy life, happy life.
- 1:52:20Douglas: Yes, I'm I'm I'm trying to help Rick out here.
- 1:52:22Douglas: We were kind of mean to him earlier, trying to make it up to him.
- 1:52:26Kay Dunning: Yeah, you know, if we can figure out a way we will do that.
- 1:52:30Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:52:30Douglas: Because I I also know from first hand experience how important grandchildren are to a mother.
- 1:52:37Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 1:52:37Kay Dunning: Or to a grandmother.
- 1:52:39Douglas: To a grandmother.
- 1:52:40Douglas: There's a really, really strong bond there.
- 1:52:43Douglas: Yes.
- 1:52:43Douglas: And so he I guess hey he's he's either crazy or brave to bring that up.
- 1:52:49Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:52:49Douglas: Maybe a little bit of both.
- 1:52:50Kay Dunning: You know, at first he didn't think our son was going to uh he he thought that we would all move out to the West Coast because like the Pacific Northwest, and and then this would be an easy decision.
- 1:53:00Kay Dunning: Um, but he you know, Michael married a Minnesota girl.
- 1:53:03Kay Dunning: We could not ask for a better daughter-in-law.
- 1:53:05Kay Dunning: Um, but her family's there, and Michael's ties are there now, and so they're gonna stay there, and if they're staying there, we're staying there.
- 1:53:14Kay Dunning: So I don't know if you can do a split residency.
- 1:53:17Kay Dunning: I don't know how that works.
- 1:53:19Kay Dunning: You know?
- 1:53:20Kay Dunning: Yeah, I don't.
- 1:53:20Kay Dunning: I looked at Rick, I said, I think the only way you can do it is if you divorce me.
- 1:53:24Kay Dunning: Literally.
- 1:53:25Kay Dunning: I mean, you like you have to do it for tax purposes, and he's like, Well, I'm not doing that.
- 1:53:29Kay Dunning: Well, thank you.
- 1:53:31Kay Dunning: That's nice, that was nice.
- 1:53:32Kay Dunning: I didn't think you were, but I didn't think you were, but thanks for the reassurance.
- 1:53:38Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:53:40Kay Dunning: So I got a question for you.
- 1:53:41Kay Dunning: Does do you have people?
- 1:53:42Kay Dunning: This is this is a good thing.
- 1:53:45Douglas: Really pushing the limit here.
- 1:53:47Kay Dunning: Which how long have we been talking, too?
- 1:53:49Douglas: Two hours.
- 1:53:50Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 1:53:50Kay Dunning: Oh gosh, Matt Jones is, you know, three.
- 1:53:54Kay Dunning: No.
- 1:53:55Douglas: Is Matt over at the house eating your dinner right now?
- 1:53:57Douglas: That Rick is.
- 1:53:57Kay Dunning: He probably is.
- 1:53:58Kay Dunning: He probably is, yeah.
- 1:53:59Kay Dunning: I hope that they're having a good, a good thing.
- 1:54:02Kay Dunning: I'm sure they are.
- 1:54:03Kay Dunning: Um, do you ever have people come back in town and go, Oh, I used to babysit you?
- 1:54:09Douglas: Yes.
- 1:54:09Kay Dunning: So when I would come back to town, um, you know, in my twenties and stuff like that, I would get all these people that I used to babysit you, I used to babysit you, and and now I'm doing that now.
- 1:54:20Kay Dunning: Now you're doing that.
- 1:54:21Kay Dunning: Oh, I used to babysit you.
- 1:54:23Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:54:24Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:54:24Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:54:25Douglas: No, there's Barb Henderson.
- 1:54:28Kay Dunning: Oh, yeah, I think she did me too.
- 1:54:30Kay Dunning: Really?
- 1:54:31Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:54:31Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:54:31Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:54:32Douglas: No, there's there's a couple ladies that come back and I used to babysit you when you were a kid.
- 1:54:37Kay Dunning: Did you or Sarah babysit people?
- 1:54:39Douglas: Sarah did.
- 1:54:39Douglas: I had no desire to do that.
- 1:54:42Kay Dunning: I yeah.
- 1:54:42Kay Dunning: I I had like three or four families where I was their primary babysitter.
- 1:54:47Douglas: Um I my I don't think it counts as babysitting as an uncle because I I told Sarah and Ralph when they started having kids.
- 1:54:54Douglas: I said once kids are potty trained, if I don't have to deal with diapers, I'm fine.
- 1:55:00Douglas: I'm not changing diapers of your kids.
- 1:55:03Douglas: And I've told Tyler and Dylan and all then, same thing.
- 1:55:06Douglas: I'm not changing your kids' diapers.
- 1:55:08Douglas: So once they get out of the diapers, if they want to hang out with Uncle for longer than that, happy to do it.
- 1:55:14Kay Dunning: Have you ever changed a diaper?
- 1:55:16Douglas: No, I have no desire to do that.
- 1:55:17Douglas: And I'm beyond the palette, I don't see myself having kids.
- 1:55:21Douglas: I'm past that point.
- 1:55:22Kay Dunning: I don't know.
- 1:55:23Douglas: I see a lot of people in Hollywood that are not in Hollywood, okay?
- 1:55:27Douglas: This I'm in Haines, Alaska.
- 1:55:29Kay Dunning: You this is kind of Hollywood.
- 1:55:31Kay Dunning: This is the this is the Hollywood of Alaska.
- 1:55:34Douglas: Yeah, no, I'll I'll push back on that.
- 1:55:36Douglas: But then the other rule was with the kids, I'd tell them, as soon as somebody starts whining, we're going home.
- 1:55:44Kay Dunning: Oh, and they didn't whine, did they?
- 1:55:47Douglas: They did once.
- 1:55:48Kay Dunning: And we're back to the store.
- 1:55:50Douglas: And from then on, they either they're either like, we're not dealing with Uncle, he's too soft for us.
- 1:55:56Douglas: That could have been part of it, or there was no whining because it's like, yeah, we're whining.
- 1:56:01Douglas: We're gone.
- 1:56:02Douglas: I don't have time for that.
- 1:56:03Douglas: Oh, you're going back to mom and dad.
- 1:56:05Kay Dunning: You're tough.
- 1:56:06Douglas: Yeah.
- 1:56:06Kay Dunning: Yeah, tough, man.
- 1:56:08Kay Dunning: So how many how many jobs did you have as a little kid?
- 1:56:10Kay Dunning: Or as a younger kid?
- 1:56:13Douglas: Paying jobs or just things that I had to do.
- 1:56:16Kay Dunning: No, paying jobs.
- 1:56:16Kay Dunning: Did you enjoy it?
- 1:56:17Kay Dunning: Was it always with your family?
- 1:56:19Douglas: No, my my dad had this deal where if people came in and they're looking for somebody that needed help with something, uh-huh, then Doug was going to do that.
- 1:56:28Douglas: Because I'd I'd help out at the store, but if somebody was like, hey, yeah, we're gonna be pouring Smet Foundation, we need another somebody to run a wheelbarrow, he's like, Hey, guess what?
- 1:56:37Douglas: At two o'clock, you need to be at such a stuff.
- 1:56:39Douglas: I was like, Well, what am I doing there?
- 1:56:40Douglas: He says, They need how they're pouring concrete and they need another person.
- 1:56:43Douglas: Okay.
- 1:56:44Douglas: I don't know anything about it.
- 1:56:45Douglas: Well, you're gonna learn.
- 1:56:46Douglas: Did you learn skills?
- 1:56:47Douglas: Some of them, yeah.
- 1:56:48Kay Dunning: Oh, that's good.
- 1:56:49Douglas: And that was his his biggest thing the whole time was it's another tool in your toolbox.
- 1:56:54Kay Dunning: Your dad was a wise man.
- 1:56:56Douglas: Another tool in your toolbox.
- 1:56:57Douglas: All these things, and and it was a lot of it drove Sarah and I crazy because all we're hearing about tool and toolbox is like, damn, box is getting heavy, dad.
- 1:57:07Douglas: But yeah, it was and but it was a great thing because he was having experience, even just a small one, of knowing what those people are doing on a daily basis.
- 1:57:17Douglas: Okay, it gives you a better appreciation of what those jobs entail and what you want to do with your life.
- 1:57:23Kay Dunning: Yes, yeah, he'd what you don't want to do with your life.
- 1:57:27Douglas: And yeah, one of the things that I didn't really key into it at the time, but over the years that really impressed me about him is there's a time that he owned five commercial fishing boats.
- 1:57:40Douglas: Did he really to help people?
- 1:57:42Douglas: It was either five or six.
- 1:57:43Kay Dunning: Wow.
- 1:57:44Douglas: That when the mills shut down, there's a bunch of people that lost their jobs, and they were in the store, they're in the sports shop talking to him all the time.
- 1:57:52Douglas: And uh yeah, like Ron Martin, he helped him get the Red Witch, Tim Twiliger helped him get his boat, um, uh Kurt Ramsey, um, there's a couple others I can't remember, but uh Larry Martin got him started with Pappy Frost.
- 1:58:05Douglas: But he would he would buy the boat, they would buy the permit, because a lot of times they didn't have the funds to do both.
- 1:58:10Douglas: Right.
- 1:58:11Douglas: And then over time, some of them bought the boat back, some of them bought a different boat.
- 1:58:14Douglas: My dad had somebody else fish the boat.
- 1:58:16Douglas: Um but to help him go and I looking back at it at the time, like he didn't have any money to do that.
- 1:58:23Douglas: He was he was he had to be leveraged to the hilt.
- 1:58:27Kay Dunning: Oh my gosh.
- 1:58:28Douglas: Doing that with having notes on all of this stuff.
- 1:58:30Douglas: I was like, man, that was either crazy or extremely generous.
- 1:58:37Douglas: Okay, a little bit of both.
- 1:58:38Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 1:58:39Douglas: To do that for other people just because he wanted to help them out.
- 1:58:43Kay Dunning: That's incredible that he would take that debt on the other hand.
- 1:58:45Douglas: And I think a lot of it came from his childhood when he was his mom passed away when he was really young.
- 1:58:51Douglas: His dad, oh yeah, his dad kind of hit the bottle, left the kids by themselves.
- 1:58:57Kay Dunning: Didn't he go to live with family or something?
- 1:58:58Douglas: Yeah, another another family that wasn't even related to him.
- 1:59:01Douglas: Two bachelor brothers and Vivian that she took care of the house, cooked and cleaned and stuff for him.
- 1:59:08Kay Dunning: Wow.
- 1:59:08Douglas: They raised, they were the ones that raised him.
- 1:59:10Kay Dunning: That's incredible.
- 1:59:11Douglas: And I think that generosity of taking somebody in that wasn't family, helping them, this was one of the ways that he could pay that back.
- 1:59:19Kay Dunning: That's incredible.
- 1:59:20Douglas: And he was always trying to do stuff like that to help others, to help to help other people.
- 1:59:25Douglas: And so a lot of times, if some of those people needed a deck hand, hey, you need to be at the dock at we're at dinner Saturday night, you need to be at the dock at 5 30 tomorrow.
- 1:59:33Douglas: I was like, Why?
- 1:59:34Douglas: Oh, Ron Martin needs you to be a deck hand.
- 1:59:37Douglas: Ron would give me so much crap, he was always picking on me, he was always just giving me crap.
- 1:59:42Douglas: I'm not going fishing with Ron.
- 1:59:44Douglas: And he was Yes you are.
- 1:59:45Douglas: He's like, Exactly, that was his answer.
- 1:59:47Douglas: Yes, you are.
- 1:59:48Douglas: I was like, no, I'm not.
- 1:59:49Douglas: He goes, I told him you'd be there, you're gonna be at the dock.
- 1:59:52Kay Dunning: And so I'm don't make a liar out of me.
- 1:59:54Douglas: I'm down at the dock, 5 30, 5 o'clock, or whatever it is in the morning, and got my brain gear boots and everything, and just hardly talk on the way out fishing, and we get out there getting ready to sit before the opener, and he's like, Listen, I have a certain way.
- 2:00:13Douglas: I said, I don't care how you did it with anybody else.
- 2:00:17Douglas: I know you fished, I have my way of doing it.
- 2:00:20Douglas: You either do it my way or I'm putting you on the beach.
- 2:00:23Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 2:00:24Douglas: Pretty much is what he said.
- 2:00:25Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:00:26Douglas: He used a little more colorful language, but I was like, okay, how do you want me to do this?
- 2:00:31Douglas: And he looked at me like, what do you mean?
- 2:00:32Douglas: I said, How do you want me to do this?
- 2:00:34Douglas: He said, I'll teach you.
- 2:00:36Douglas: I was like, Okay.
- 2:00:37Douglas: By the end of the opening, he's like, You coming back next week?
- 2:00:39Douglas: I was like, No, I gotta go to college.
- 2:00:41Douglas: Peace out, I'm out of here.
- 2:00:43Douglas: But it we got along great.
- 2:00:45Douglas: Oh, I just did what he told me to do.
- 2:00:47Douglas: And that made him he was very specific on how he wanted something done.
- 2:00:51Kay Dunning: You know, that helps when you know.
- 2:00:52Douglas: And that was one of those first things, is like that, and you know, Brene Brown says this all the time, clear is kind.
- 2:00:57Douglas: If you tell somebody exactly what the expectations are, it's easy to meet that.
- 2:01:03Douglas: Because if I tell you, okay, I'm gonna leave you here for an hour, clean the store.
- 2:01:09Kay Dunning: What do you want me to do?
- 2:01:10Kay Dunning: Dust?
- 2:01:11Douglas: You don't know what my level of cleanliness is, but if I say, Okay, I want you to wash the windows, I want you to vacuum the floor, I want you to clean the glass and the counters, and these are the things and you come back and all those are done, it's like, okay, yeah, you did it.
- 2:01:22Kay Dunning: You did good.
- 2:01:23Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:01:23Douglas: But if you don't know what the expectations are, you could dust everything in the store, but not vacuum the floors or clean the windows, and I'm like, what the heck did you do?
- 2:01:34Kay Dunning: Wait a second, I did all this.
- 2:01:35Kay Dunning: Very true.
- 2:01:36Douglas: And so that that aspect, I I didn't clue in at the time, but with Ron, he was very clear on what he wanted done and how he wanted it done.
- 2:01:46Kay Dunning: And are you more clear now because of that?
- 2:01:48Douglas: I tried to be.
- 2:01:48Douglas: Not always, because I I can still speak about something and the other person does something, I'm like.
- 2:01:56Douglas: I made it extremely clear.
- 2:01:59Kay Dunning: In your mind.
- 2:02:00Kay Dunning: Yeah, in my mind.
- 2:02:02Douglas: I made it extremely clear how this needed to be done.
- 2:02:05Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:02:06Douglas: How did how could they possibly screw that up?
- 2:02:08Douglas: You know and it happens all the time.
- 2:02:10Douglas: I used to uh clean- So I think I have a communication issue, okay.
- 2:02:13Kay Dunning: Uh I don't know.
- 2:02:14Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 2:02:16Kay Dunning: You can't communicate well.
- 2:02:17Douglas: I cannot communicate well, apparently.
- 2:02:20Kay Dunning: Um, I used to clean uh houses for uh Betty Hun or clean Betty Heinmeller's house.
- 2:02:25Douglas: Okay.
- 2:02:25Kay Dunning: And she was that way.
- 2:02:27Kay Dunning: She was very specific on what she wanted done and how she wanted it done.
- 2:02:32Kay Dunning: And that has served me in good stead all these years.
- 2:02:35Kay Dunning: But it it really does help when you when you know, when you know what to do.
- 2:02:40Douglas: Clear, clear definition on what the job entails or anything.
- 2:02:43Kay Dunning: Clear as mud.
- 2:02:44Douglas: Even even in relationships, it was very clear what the expectations are what you're doing this, I'm doing this, and having those conversations or whatever makes everything go much smoother.
- 2:02:54Kay Dunning: Marriage, yeah, yeah, definitely definitely.
- 2:02:56Kay Dunning: It's like, you know, uh when you have different um I I'm a detail person and Rick is is more big picture.
- 2:03:06Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 2:03:07Kay Dunning: And and that can have those issues.
- 2:03:10Kay Dunning: Detail people are are more anal.
- 2:03:12Kay Dunning: I'm sorry.
- 2:03:13Kay Dunning: I'm analyzed.
- 2:03:15Kay Dunning: But but you know, it's it's like oh, it's taken me a many years to get comfortable with it's okay, you do it, you do it your way.
- 2:03:26Kay Dunning: I'll either go right behind you and fix it, or or um, or just being okay with it and and teaching preschool really helped me with that.
- 2:03:35Douglas: Oh, I bet it would.
- 2:03:36Kay Dunning: That's a really cool concept.
- 2:03:37Kay Dunning: Let's let's do it that way now.
- 2:03:39Kay Dunning: But yeah, so those those early jobs, uh Rick and I were counting up how many different places I had worked um around here.
- 2:03:49Douglas: Yeah, I didn't I didn't work at businesses that much as much because there was places that I applied that wouldn't hire me because they were afraid my dad was gonna be mad at them because that way I wouldn't be there working for him.
- 2:04:04Douglas: Yeah, there's a couple places that I was like, oh, this would be a sweet job, and I'd put an application in and and I just never heard back, and I I was like, what the heck happened?
- 2:04:12Douglas: And somebody in the office or somebody there was like, yeah, they don't want their dad, they don't want your dad pissed off at them.
- 2:04:17Kay Dunning: I don't remember ever feeling filling out a job application.
- 2:04:22Douglas: There was it was there was just a couple places that I did it.
- 2:04:25Douglas: I yeah, I didn't know.
- 2:04:26Douglas: But most of it was just yeah, it was oh yeah, yeah, you're working for us, yeah, yeah.
- 2:04:30Kay Dunning: Can I can I get can I come work for you?
- 2:04:32Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:04:32Kay Dunning: I worked for a halibut uh fishing charter group one time over the summer.
- 2:04:37Kay Dunning: Um and everybody in town, it seemed like worked at the Halsey Land Hotel.
- 2:04:41Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 2:04:42Kay Dunning: Um I did not work at the Halsey Land, I worked for Helma in the uh trailer park behind and uh and that and that's where the halibut fishing thing ran out of to like the following year.
- 2:04:53Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 2:04:53Kay Dunning: And Alaska Indian Arts I worked at.
- 2:04:56Kay Dunning: Okay, all those different things.
- 2:04:58Kay Dunning: Toket dancing.
- 2:04:59Kay Dunning: I in fact to cat dancing, I just noticed.
- 2:05:01Douglas: Were you ever a dancer?
- 2:05:03Kay Dunning: I was a lead dancer for a year.
- 2:05:04Douglas: You were a lead dancer at Chilkat Dancer?
- 2:05:05Kay Dunning: For uh yeah, for um a year or two.
- 2:05:07Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:05:08Douglas: Um Were you in Lust for Dust too?
- 2:05:10Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 2:05:11Douglas: Patience rewarded?
- 2:05:13Kay Dunning: I was patience and I was um Goldie.
- 2:05:16Kay Dunning: I was rosy.
- 2:05:17Kay Dunning: I was Goldie of the of the uh bar at the bar girls, yeah.
- 2:05:21Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:05:22Douglas: How many years did you do that?
- 2:05:24Douglas: See, all the people from the 80s are gonna be catching on to this.
- 2:05:28Douglas: A lot of people are going, what the heck are they talking about?
- 2:05:30Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:05:31Kay Dunning: Lust for dusty or patience rewarded, yeah, yeah.
- 2:05:33Kay Dunning: Um three years?
- 2:05:35Kay Dunning: I s I have dreams that I've come back to town and that they're revising it.
- 2:05:39Kay Dunning: They're like, we need somebody to play patience.
- 2:05:41Kay Dunning: I'm like, I don't know the lines anymore.
- 2:05:44Kay Dunning: The only one I remember is, and and it was uh Tammy Hyatt that that did it perfectly.
- 2:05:51Kay Dunning: She was the very first patience, and uh she was she was so good at it, but she did a a little line where it's um I flee, and you have to kick your legs out to the side and not trip on your dress as you come back down.
- 2:06:03Kay Dunning: But um, yeah, that was really fun.
- 2:06:05Kay Dunning: My mom played the um villain, villainous in um Smell of the Yukon.
- 2:06:12Douglas: My dad was in Smell of the Yukon, too.
- 2:06:13Douglas: Was he really?
- 2:06:14Douglas: What part did he play?
- 2:06:14Douglas: I have I have no idea, but we have the we we have a newspaper or the playbill or something.
- 2:06:19Douglas: We've got it framed at my mom's house.
- 2:06:21Kay Dunning: Oh, that's cool.
- 2:06:22Douglas: With him like kissing this lady or something in it with Smell of the Yukon.
- 2:06:25Douglas: At first I was like, the hell is this?
- 2:06:28Douglas: Well, it's a play.
- 2:06:29Douglas: I was like, wait a second, my dad was in a play?
- 2:06:32Kay Dunning: I wonder if um I'm trying to remember.
- 2:06:34Kay Dunning: Um Ray Menecker played opposite my mom a lot.
- 2:06:37Douglas: Okay.
- 2:06:38Kay Dunning: Um, and then um oh gosh, who else was there's there's a lot of people in it that I can't re I can't remember who all was in.
- 2:06:45Kay Dunning: I remember like Judy Heimiller's one of the Can Can Girls and and Um KA Greg and stuff like that, Cheryl Martin and I'm gonna be able to do that.
- 2:06:52Douglas: I remember briefly see I think we saw it when I was young because there was I remember the Can Can Girls and everything.
- 2:06:57Douglas: I don't remember my dad ever being in it or seeing it when he was in it.
- 2:07:00Douglas: But we've got that playbill or whatever.
- 2:07:03Douglas: Wow, that's so funny.
- 2:07:06Kay Dunning: I think I I saw my mom's Lou costume.
- 2:07:08Douglas: Oh, do you?
- 2:07:09Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:07:09Kay Dunning: It's uh red satin with black, and I remember her feather and yeah, she'd put the mole, like the Maryland mole, on her T.
- 2:07:16Kay Dunning: And uh she had a line in the play, um, I'm so mad I could bite a nail, and she'd throw this nail.
- 2:07:24Kay Dunning: And every night I had to go retrieve it.
- 2:07:26Kay Dunning: I was like four or five years old.
- 2:07:27Kay Dunning: Like, oh, where's the nail?
- 2:07:29Douglas: That was your first job as retreat.
- 2:07:30Douglas: Yeah, yeah, that was my probably unpaid.
- 2:07:34Kay Dunning: Yeah, I think there was child labor law as well.
- 2:07:37Kay Dunning: Um yeah, I had to sing uh It's a Small World at the start.
- 2:07:42Kay Dunning: They did a pre-show.
- 2:07:43Kay Dunning: Okay, and I would have to sing uh It's a Small World.
- 2:07:46Douglas: Um by yourself?
- 2:07:48Douglas: How old were you when you're five, six or two?
- 2:07:51Douglas: So they're forcing you out on the stage to five or six of children.
- 2:07:54Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:07:54Kay Dunning: I did the same thing with my kids.
- 2:07:58Douglas: No, one one of my one of my favorite parts with uh uh Lust for Dust was with Ray Mannecker reading Robert Service beforehand.
- 2:08:06Kay Dunning: Was it do you so Ray Maneker, do you remember Lowell Knutsen doing it too?
- 2:08:11Douglas: Yes.
- 2:08:11Douglas: Yes, that's right.
- 2:08:12Douglas: So good.
- 2:08:13Douglas: I'd forgotten about that.
- 2:08:14Douglas: So good.
- 2:08:14Douglas: They both didn't have a lot of things.
- 2:08:15Douglas: Yeah, both of those guys did a great job with that.
- 2:08:18Kay Dunning: Um Sam the creation of Sam McGee.
- 2:08:20Kay Dunning: Lowell was spectacular in that.
- 2:08:27Douglas: Strange strange things done beneath the midnight sun by men who muck and moil for gold.
- 2:08:33Kay Dunning: But the strangest story ever told.
- 2:08:38Douglas: Barge on Lake Lamarge.
- 2:08:40Douglas: Yeah, Barge on Lake Lamarge and creation of Sam McGee.
- 2:08:44Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:08:44Kay Dunning: Um I I think you know the uh LCCP is doing some um they're doing a uh Edgar Allan Poe thing this year.
- 2:08:54Douglas: I saw an advertisement for you.
- 2:08:55Kay Dunning: But they might throw in a little bit of Robert Service in with it, I think, too.
- 2:08:58Kay Dunning: So yeah, you should oh, you should audition for that.
- 2:09:03Douglas: No.
- 2:09:04Kay Dunning: You know, um a oh gosh.
- 2:09:06Douglas: I almost did a play a few years ago.
- 2:09:08Kay Dunning: Oh, did you?
- 2:09:09Kay Dunning: Yeah, I forget which one it was, but it called the the Mamma Mia, where you had to be one of the Mamma Mia.
- 2:09:16Douglas: Yeah, no, that was not gonna be it.
- 2:09:18Douglas: But the part called for like a pot-bellied bald guy.
- 2:09:23Douglas: And I was like, I Yeah, that looks just like you.
- 2:09:25Douglas: I was like, yeah, I was like, I appreciate you guys thinking that I could do this, but I've never acted at all in my life, and I think that's a little bit of a stretch for me.
- 2:09:34Douglas: It's like, no, no, no, we can make it happen.
- 2:09:36Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:09:37Douglas: And it was, it was I think it was three weeks before it was going to be performed.
- 2:09:44Douglas: I was like, I gotta learn all of this.
- 2:09:46Kay Dunning: Oh, yeah.
- 2:09:47Kay Dunning: Oh, that's that's a lot.
- 2:09:48Douglas: And they're like, you can do it.
- 2:09:49Douglas: Like, maybe I can, but I'm not going to.
- 2:09:54Kay Dunning: You're just kind of stubborn, aren't you?
- 2:09:56Douglas: Not just kind of.
- 2:09:58Kay Dunning: I've never known that about you.
- 2:09:59Douglas: You've never known that about me?
- 2:10:00Douglas: Talk to my mom and sister sometimes.
- 2:10:05Kay Dunning: You know, oh it's Doug, you know.
- 2:10:07Douglas: I can seem that way, but uh, yeah, no, I've I'm I can be fairly stubborn.
- 2:10:11Kay Dunning: You know, I've I've gotten into um directing plays down south.
- 2:10:15Douglas: See, you need so you need to bring back Lust for Dust.
- 2:10:19Kay Dunning: Oh man, that's been talked about.
- 2:10:20Kay Dunning: It's been talked about.
- 2:10:22Douglas: You've got experience.
- 2:10:24Kay Dunning: I think so.
- 2:10:25Douglas: As an actress in it, you've been directing plays.
- 2:10:28Kay Dunning: There's a lot of people up here though that have experience that have directed plays.
- 2:10:31Douglas: Exactly.
- 2:10:32Douglas: You have you can you can coalesce that group.
- 2:10:35Douglas: You're the linchpin in the group, Kay.
- 2:10:38Kay Dunning: Is that yeah?
- 2:10:38Douglas: That's what uh that's what I'm going with here to bring revive revive lusts for dust for Haines.
- 2:10:44Kay Dunning: There we go.
- 2:10:46Douglas: I'll I'll look forward to seeing I'll look forward to opening that next time.
- 2:10:49Kay Dunning: Morgan Knudsen can go play Danny Rugit and Tom Andreessen can be Sergeant Justin Tump.
- 2:10:54Kay Dunning: Wait, Tom Orfitt played that part too.
- 2:10:57Douglas: There you go.
- 2:10:57Douglas: See, you have actors already lined up for these parts.
- 2:11:00Kay Dunning: Well, we we talked about, you know, it's it's been jokingly talked about rewriting it to Lust for Dust, the Golden Years.
- 2:11:07Douglas: The Golden Years.
- 2:11:08Douglas: Okay, I'll make you a deal.
- 2:11:11Douglas: Are you ready to bargain?
- 2:11:13Kay Dunning: Oh uh.
- 2:11:15Douglas: If you bring back Lust for Dust, I'll read Cremation of Sam McGee beforehand.
- 2:11:23Kay Dunning: Oh, it's a pre-show thing, huh?
- 2:11:25Douglas: I'll do I'll do the pre-show with Cremation of Sam McGee.
- 2:11:30Kay Dunning: You're hearing it live.
- 2:11:31Kay Dunning: Well, it's not gonna be live, it's recorded.
- 2:11:33Kay Dunning: Record it live.
- 2:11:35Douglas: Recorded live, but you have to bring back Lust for Dust.
- 2:11:38Kay Dunning: Ooh, can I do it as the Golden Years?
- 2:11:40Douglas: You can do it as the Golden Years if you rewrite it as the Golden Years.
- 2:11:44Kay Dunning: That could be a lot of fun.
- 2:11:45Douglas: I'll I'll I'll make that commitment.
- 2:11:47Kay Dunning: I'll get together with a couple people and see about that idea.
- 2:11:50Douglas: To to relive past history, summer history in Haines.
- 2:11:53Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 2:11:54Douglas: Cultural icon of Lust for Dust.
- 2:11:56Douglas: You can reboot it as the Golden Years.
- 2:12:00Kay Dunning: You be in the show.
- 2:12:01Douglas: No, no, that wasn't part of the deal here, Kay.
- 2:12:03Douglas: This was pre-show.
- 2:12:05Douglas: Old news sitting on a snow.
- 2:12:07Kay Dunning: Rick has always wanted to be in one of my shows, but he only wants to be a wolf.
- 2:12:11Kay Dunning: I don't know why.
- 2:12:15Kay Dunning: He just wants to be a wolf.
- 2:12:17Kay Dunning: And I'm like, honey, you can't.
- 2:12:19Kay Dunning: He couldn't be in my shows because he was always fine.
- 2:12:21Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:12:22Kay Dunning: Well, he's retired now.
- 2:12:23Kay Dunning: I'm like, cool, you could be in one of the shows.
- 2:12:25Douglas: And he's like Sergeant Justin Time has his dog, but he can have the wolf.
- 2:12:30Douglas: He can have a wolf named Rick coming onto the stage with Sergeant Justin Time.
- 2:12:35Kay Dunning: Yeah, yep, there we go.
- 2:12:37Douglas: We're rewriting that part for a wolf.
- 2:12:39Kay Dunning: I like it.
- 2:12:39Kay Dunning: I like it.
- 2:12:40Douglas: He's got So now you got you got Rick in there.
- 2:12:42Douglas: You're well on your way to making this happen.
- 2:12:46Kay Dunning: Probably Tom.
- 2:12:48Douglas: When I get home, I'm gonna have to start.
- 2:12:49Douglas: I'm gonna have to get out my Robert service book and start memorizing.
- 2:12:53Douglas: Although I thought Ray and them, I thought they read it.
- 2:12:56Douglas: Did they not have a book that they were reading, or did they actually memorize it?
- 2:12:59Douglas: Crap, I'm gonna have to move it.
- 2:13:00Douglas: They memorized it.
- 2:13:05Kay Dunning: And I believe Ray did too, yeah.
- 2:13:06Douglas: I might have stepped out further on this high plank than I wanted to.
- 2:13:10Kay Dunning: Love and Mana, watch out for the glasses.
- 2:13:11Kay Dunning: Yeah, watch out for the glass.
- 2:13:13Douglas: Below, I'm coming for it here.
- 2:13:16Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:13:16Douglas: You're gonna need to give me more than three weeks to remember.
- 2:13:18Douglas: Do I have to do the whole?
- 2:13:19Douglas: Was it the whole poem?
- 2:13:21Douglas: Holy.
- 2:13:23Kay Dunning: Close the door, it's my warm in here.
- 2:13:24Kay Dunning: It's the first time I'm gonna see it.
- 2:13:27Douglas: What was I thinking?
- 2:13:29Kay Dunning: Oh, I like this cut this.
- 2:13:32Douglas: You better start practicing tonight.
- 2:13:34Kay Dunning: Record it for posterity's sake.
- 2:13:36Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:13:36Douglas: So Marty cut this part.
- 2:13:38Douglas: I pay Marty to do this.
- 2:13:45Douglas: You're you're not.
- 2:13:46Douglas: So you might you might have to be up against some whether this actually sees the light.
- 2:13:52Kay Dunning: How bad do you want to be mayor again?
- 2:13:57Douglas: This isn't gonna show until after the election, see?
- 2:14:00Douglas: So that's true.
- 2:14:01Douglas: I've got a little freeway there.
- 2:14:07Kay Dunning: Oh boy.
- 2:14:08Kay Dunning: Unfortunately, I have a big mouth.
- 2:14:10Kay Dunning: So so down south.
- 2:14:15Douglas: Getting back to the case story.
- 2:14:16Kay Dunning: Oh, so go yeah, so I was gonna tell you though, I um so about 10 years ago, 12 years ago must have been, because my daughter uh Ryan was in was in it.
- 2:14:25Kay Dunning: I did um Arsenic and Old Lace down south.
- 2:14:30Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:14:30Kay Dunning: In honor/slash memory for of my parents.
- 2:14:33Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:14:34Kay Dunning: So Ryan was in it.
- 2:14:35Kay Dunning: She played the part my mom played, and then you you talked about being asked to be in this play.
- 2:14:40Kay Dunning: I had a neighbor um of mine that I knew would be really good on stage, and he'd never done a play before.
- 2:14:47Kay Dunning: So I asked him, I'm like, hey Mike, I think you should come audition for the show, and I'll just cast you in just a small part if you you know, if you do well.
- 2:14:56Kay Dunning: And so he came, he did, and I did.
- 2:15:00Kay Dunning: I cast him in a small part.
- 2:15:02Kay Dunning: Then one of my leads had to quit.
- 2:15:04Kay Dunning: And it's it's a guy that it's the um role of kind of the drunk doctor.
- 2:15:10Kay Dunning: He's a like a German doctor or something like that.
- 2:15:13Kay Dunning: And um, and and so a Russian, I can't remember for sure which one he is, um, but you know, he's he's he's he's the drunk and um very big part.
- 2:15:24Kay Dunning: And I went, oh my god, I really good at that.
- 2:15:29Kay Dunning: And so I gave him a little longer, I gave him four and a half weeks to memorize everything.
- 2:15:35Kay Dunning: And and one night he came out on stage, I was up in the lighting booth, and and um he came out on stage and he walks out and he's holding his script.
- 2:15:46Kay Dunning: And I'm like, oh, oh crap, how's this?
- 2:15:49Kay Dunning: What's happening here?
- 2:15:51Kay Dunning: He's got his script in his hand right in front of the entire audience.
- 2:15:55Kay Dunning: And he kind of is like, he realizes it, he takes it and he nonchalantly sticks it in and continues on with his lines.
- 2:16:03Kay Dunning: Did a great job.
- 2:16:04Kay Dunning: He's been in a ton of shows since.
- 2:16:06Kay Dunning: So really, yeah.
- 2:16:07Kay Dunning: So you never know what happens when you step out on stage deck.
- 2:16:13Douglas: So apparently, appearing in a Kay Dunning production is a stepping stone to who knows what.
- 2:16:23Kay Dunning: Who knows what.
- 2:16:24Douglas: So that's just putting it out there for people that are going to be approached to appear in Lust for Dust the Golden Years.
- 2:16:30Douglas: This could be a stepping stone to who knows what.
- 2:16:35Kay Dunning: I had a young lady, she was in fourth grade.
- 2:16:37Kay Dunning: She I I cast her as a black sheep in um Charlotte's Webb.
- 2:16:43Kay Dunning: And she just graduated from college in her with her theater degree.
- 2:16:47Kay Dunning: So you never know where it's gonna lead.
- 2:16:52Douglas: That's a that's a strong selling point.
- 2:16:54Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:16:54Kay Dunning: See, Doug, you could have a full second career ahead of you.
- 2:16:59Kay Dunning: No.
- 2:17:00Douglas: I can I can get I can guarantee I do not have a second career ahead of me.
- 2:17:08Kay Dunning: Okay, third, because you're you did have you've got the mayor thing, you know, that you've had that once.
- 2:17:14Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:17:14Kay Dunning: And so, yeah.
- 2:17:16Kay Dunning: No, yeah, no, no, okay.
- 2:17:19Douglas: I I I told a friend in college, they were going back and forth.
- 2:17:23Douglas: I said, you know, acting really isn't that tough.
- 2:17:27Douglas: And she's like, Yeah, it is.
- 2:17:29Douglas: I said, No, it's not.
- 2:17:31Douglas: I said, anybody can be an actor.
- 2:17:33Douglas: And she's like, No, it's really, really tough.
- 2:17:36Douglas: And I said, I act like an ass all the time.
- 2:17:39Douglas: I said, it's really easy.
- 2:17:40Douglas: She didn't think that that was really the same.
- 2:17:43Douglas: She didn't think that was the same as actually acting.
- 2:17:47Kay Dunning: But well, we could put you in Shrek and you could be an ass in that.
- 2:17:50Douglas: There you go.
- 2:17:50Douglas: Sign me up as a donkey.
- 2:17:52Douglas: Sign me up as donkey.
- 2:17:54Kay Dunning: That's it.
- 2:17:54Kay Dunning: That's it.
- 2:17:54Kay Dunning: We have found your role.
- 2:17:55Kay Dunning: I found my role.
- 2:17:56Kay Dunning: We're we're the wolf and you're a donkey.
- 2:17:59Douglas: Yep, yep.
- 2:17:59Douglas: There we go.
- 2:18:00Douglas: Yep.
- 2:18:01Kay Dunning: Oh my goodness.
- 2:18:03Douglas: What what are we what are we missing in the K Dunning story that we haven't hit?
- 2:18:07Kay Dunning: I I don't know.
- 2:18:09Douglas: Other than the letting people know that Lust for Dust is going to be in Haines next summer.
- 2:18:13Kay Dunning: Oh, next summer.
- 2:18:14Kay Dunning: Oh.
- 2:18:14Kay Dunning: Next summer.
- 2:18:14Kay Dunning: Boy, you're putting a lot of pressure on me.
- 2:18:17Douglas: You got all winter.
- 2:18:18Douglas: You got you got like eight months to get this ready.
- 2:18:20Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:18:21Kay Dunning: And I'm retired now, right?
- 2:18:22Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:18:22Kay Dunning: Yeah, you're retired.
- 2:18:23Douglas: You got plenty of time.
- 2:18:25Kay Dunning: Ah, what are you missing?
- 2:18:26Kay Dunning: I don't.
- 2:18:27Kay Dunning: I I can't uh our kids love it up here.
- 2:18:30Kay Dunning: They absolutely love coming back up here.
- 2:18:32Kay Dunning: Um, Rick considers it more of his hometown than his hometown, I think.
- 2:18:37Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:18:38Kay Dunning: And oh, yeah, that's the thing.
- 2:18:40Kay Dunning: Rick br uh coming up here and getting into fishing.
- 2:18:44Kay Dunning: I grew up I'd never fished, I mean like one time in my life.
- 2:18:50Douglas: Uh was that something you're you're doing?
- 2:18:52Douglas: My dad didn't my dad didn't he wasn't really into fishing.
- 2:18:54Kay Dunning: His dad died when he was six.
- 2:18:56Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 2:18:56Kay Dunning: And so he never um really ex had those experiences.
- 2:19:01Kay Dunning: And so coming up here, he I mean, he would take my brother out once in a while.
- 2:19:05Kay Dunning: In fact, I found out Norm um Smith had our old boat, the Mike.
- 2:19:10Kay Dunning: It was it was a 13-foot skiff.
- 2:19:13Kay Dunning: Um for many, many years he had it.
- 2:19:15Kay Dunning: He he finally sold it again, but it's still going strong.
- 2:19:18Kay Dunning: Um, but he and my my brother would go fishing occasionally, but I I went out one time and I remember Lee Heimiller was in the boat.
- 2:19:26Kay Dunning: I'm in the boat, maybe my maybe my brother and me, and we're out on Tokut Lake, and I my dad probably cast for me, and I'm reeling it in, and I get half of a dead rotted spawned-out fish and uh salmon, and I'm like, this is disgusting, I'm never doing it again.
- 2:19:43Kay Dunning: And I don't like shrimp, didn't like seafood to eat except for like halibut and crab.
- 2:19:49Kay Dunning: Didn't like shrimp, didn't like any of that stuff.
- 2:19:51Kay Dunning: I now drive the boat, I get us on the crab spots, I get us in the shrimp spots, and then we uh we sit out in the boat and we take the heads off the shrimp, and then I'm shelling them and stuff like that.
- 2:20:04Kay Dunning: I'm fishing the other day, I'm helping clean the fish.
- 2:20:07Kay Dunning: I'm like, A, I never thought I would ever be doing that stuff.
- 2:20:11Kay Dunning: I'm like, oh Rick, I got some scales on my face.
- 2:20:14Kay Dunning: I'm like, you know, me 40 years ago, I'm never, never gonna happen.
- 2:20:19Kay Dunning: Again, you never say never.
- 2:20:20Kay Dunning: And um I have the utmost respect now for the commercial fishermen.
- 2:20:27Kay Dunning: I you know, I didn't appreciate what they do.
- 2:20:30Kay Dunning: But just being out on the boat when it's a pretty calm day and it's still rocking, and I'm like, oh, I'm scared.
- 2:20:38Kay Dunning: And those guys are going out in some horrible weather, and and the stuff that they're doing to to bring back into us is is amazing.
- 2:20:48Kay Dunning: And I I just have a complete new respect and appreciation for what they do.
- 2:20:56Douglas: It takes a toll on your body being out there doing that.
- 2:20:58Kay Dunning: Oh goodness, yeah, yeah.
- 2:21:00Kay Dunning: And and there's a lot of older fishermen out there that they're still doing it, and it's it's like, God bless them, because I like said I had no understanding as a young person.
- 2:21:12Kay Dunning: And now that I'm older, and and I never berry picked, I never did any of that stuff.
- 2:21:16Douglas: The our friends at No, you didn't even do berry picking?
- 2:21:19Kay Dunning: No, my mom never mm-mm, mm-mm.
- 2:21:21Kay Dunning: We never went berry picking, never cherry picking, any of that stuff.
- 2:21:24Kay Dunning: And you know, we're pro we're putting up stuff, and um some of my friends have tried to teach me how to can.
- 2:21:30Kay Dunning: I'm I'm not good at that.
- 2:21:31Kay Dunning: But the stuff I'm learning from are.
- 2:21:34Douglas: I'm always worried I'm gonna blow something up when I'm canning.
- 2:21:37Kay Dunning: Yeah, Melina Shields reminded me the other day.
- 2:21:38Kay Dunning: She's like, if you're tired, don't try canning.
- 2:21:40Douglas: Yeah, I'm always so worried.
- 2:21:42Douglas: I'm just like hovering over that pressure gauge.
- 2:21:44Douglas: Watching it, watching, watching and watching it's like, oh man, I'm gonna blow a hole through my roof.
- 2:21:48Kay Dunning: Yeah, don't don't go to somebody else that knows how that they're doing.
- 2:21:52Douglas: Well, I've done it every time I've done it successfully.
- 2:21:54Douglas: Oh, have you?
- 2:21:55Douglas: Oh, numerous times.
- 2:21:56Douglas: But uh it's I'm a nervous wreck the whole time.
- 2:21:58Kay Dunning: I'm always, you know, the the hot water bath and stuff like that.
- 2:22:01Kay Dunning: I'm just afraid it's like, well, what if there's bacteria that I didn't get out of it?
- 2:22:05Kay Dunning: And you know, what if I give so many food poisoning from this?
- 2:22:09Kay Dunning: But um, yeah, the stuff I've learned since we've been coming back just in the last, you know, five, eight years.
- 2:22:16Kay Dunning: I'm so appreciative of of the people that are willing to teach.
- 2:22:21Kay Dunning: Um teach me, teach Rick.
- 2:22:25Douglas: Pretty much anything you want to learn about living in Haines, you can find somebody that'll teach and help you do it better.
- 2:22:30Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:22:31Kay Dunning: And and everybody has different ways of doing things, and so you kinda you kinda it's like a recipe, you know.
- 2:22:37Kay Dunning: You've got this recipe, you get well, I'm gonna kinda merge them and stuff like that.
- 2:22:40Kay Dunning: But I just it just has given me such a new appreciation coming back here.
- 2:22:46Kay Dunning: And I I truly I always dread the trip up, but once I'm here, um, like you know, we're leaving in in a week and a half, and uh neither one of us are ready to leave.
- 2:22:56Kay Dunning: But yeah, we we we love coming back here because we might have left, but you never fully leave, you know.
- 2:23:03Kay Dunning: It's it's it's always home.
- 2:23:05Douglas: So I'm kinda surprised you're leaving early because Rick seemed to enjoy coho fishing last fall.
- 2:23:10Kay Dunning: He's coming back for it.
- 2:23:11Kay Dunning: Oh, he's gonna come back.
- 2:23:11Kay Dunning: He's coming back for it, yeah.
- 2:23:13Kay Dunning: And the this is the only reason we go early like this.
- 2:23:18Kay Dunning: Well, it was because of work originally.
- 2:23:20Kay Dunning: Um, but um our son and daughter-in-law um take the grandkids to the fair with her family, and that's been a family tradition on our daughter-in-law's side for years and years and years, and we're like, well, we'd really like to be part of that tradition.
- 2:23:34Kay Dunning: So we go back for Go back so you go to the fair.
- 2:23:37Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:23:37Douglas: That's a good reason to go back.
- 2:23:38Kay Dunning: It really is.
- 2:23:39Kay Dunning: This year we missed it though, because they're going the day before we get back, and it's like, oh, that was bad timing on my part.
- 2:23:46Kay Dunning: So but uh yeah, Rick's coming up in October um again to go fishing.
- 2:23:50Douglas: So you're not gonna come help them out?
- 2:23:53Kay Dunning: I'm I don't know.
- 2:23:54Kay Dunning: We just built our new house and we've only been in it five weeks, and so I might be working on some projects there.
- 2:24:00Kay Dunning: I don't know.
- 2:24:01Kay Dunning: We bring our cats up every year, you know.
- 2:24:03Kay Dunning: Um and this is their fifth summer coming up, but we don't bring them in the fall, but we have somebody house sit for us for a week or two, so I might do that, but we'll see.
- 2:24:13Kay Dunning: All right.
- 2:24:14Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:24:14Kay Dunning: So this this is home.
- 2:24:16Kay Dunning: This is always home.
- 2:24:20Douglas: Was it was it always home?
- 2:24:22Douglas: Were you were you thinking that when I was out of here at 18?
- 2:24:25Kay Dunning: I'm out.
- 2:24:25Douglas: I know, but they had like 3040.
- 2:24:27Douglas: Were you thinking it'd be nice to when we retire to spend time at Haines?
- 2:24:31Douglas: Or is this just kind of a recent thing after you started spending a little more time in the summer that I think it's more recent.
- 2:24:37Kay Dunning: I think it's more recent as we uh yeah, in the last ten, ten years or so.
- 2:24:42Douglas: As we've started fixing up the place and is is is some of that maybe just kind of keeping that bond to mom and dad in a way, maybe, or maybe a little bit, but I think more of it's that you know, I mean, look at you and me.
- 2:24:55Kay Dunning: We didn't know each other in school.
- 2:24:56Douglas: No.
- 2:24:57Kay Dunning: And I I really enjoy coming in and seeing you each year.
- 2:25:00Kay Dunning: And and Al Badgley, I didn't know Al when I was in school or when I left, because we left 40 years ago.
- 2:25:06Kay Dunning: And people have been here 30 years.
- 2:25:08Kay Dunning: I'm like, huh.
- 2:25:09Kay Dunning: I don't know it yet.
- 2:25:10Kay Dunning: Um, but it it's uh it's been more recent, I think.
- 2:25:16Kay Dunning: Like I said, since we've been fixing up the house and just having that connection to people in town.
- 2:25:22Kay Dunning: Yeah, there's there is a connection with our mom and with my mom and dad.
- 2:25:26Kay Dunning: Um, a little bit, you know, we we volunteer the um Legion at the burder feed.
- 2:25:30Kay Dunning: But that's kind of because it it draws me closer, draws right closer to them.
- 2:25:36Kay Dunning: But um everything else, it's it's because of the people that we've gotten to know as adults, and it's really nice.
- 2:25:44Kay Dunning: People that maybe my parents didn't get along with necessarily, or they had different uh different views.
- 2:25:50Kay Dunning: Um we get along with great, and and we we have our circle seems bigger and stuff like that, partly because we aren't here to vote.
- 2:26:01Kay Dunning: So we don't have any political bias one way or the other.
- 2:26:06Kay Dunning: So I think that makes it kind of nice, but but yeah, it's it's the people that we've connected with now.
- 2:26:13Kay Dunning: Um and whether there's a connection to my parents or not, you know, it's um new people and old people.
- 2:26:18Kay Dunning: I just every year we meet some new people and it's just wonderful.
- 2:26:22Kay Dunning: I I met Anne Marie Palmeri yesterday.
- 2:26:25Kay Dunning: I've seen her name in the paper for years, she's been here 30 years, and she was so sweet, said nice things about my mom and dad, but I'd never met her, and it's like, oh, this is really cool.
- 2:26:36Kay Dunning: I get to meet you now.
- 2:26:37Kay Dunning: You know, and and the people over at the uh exercise class that I do.
- 2:26:42Kay Dunning: Uh a lot of them are older, but um I like feeling like I'm one of the younger people.
- 2:26:47Kay Dunning: They're they are in better shape than I am by far.
- 2:26:50Kay Dunning: And uh I just it's been lovely just meeting so many new people.
- 2:26:55Douglas: I've always kind of circling back to us not knowing each other really when we were younger.
- 2:26:59Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:27:00Douglas: It always felt to me that anybody that was that I wasn't in high school with, yeah.
- 2:27:05Douglas: You know, you got that group that's either three years ahead of you or three years behind you that you share those four years of high school with.
- 2:27:11Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:27:12Douglas: And it's kind of like those are my peers.
- 2:27:14Douglas: But you were, I think, just a year ahead of me.
- 2:27:18Douglas: You graduated in eighty three.
- 2:27:20Douglas: Three.
- 2:27:21Douglas: So you're two years ahead of me.
- 2:27:22Douglas: Because I graduated No.
- 2:27:24Douglas: Yeah, it was well, five years ago.
- 2:27:25Kay Dunning: No, Sarah was a freshman when I was a freshman year.
- 2:27:28Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:27:29Douglas: So it's I meant when I say two years, because I started in 84.
- 2:27:33Douglas: Oh, I see what you mean.
- 2:27:34Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:27:35Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 2:27:36Douglas: So but looking at that, that's not that big of a the the older I get, it's like, that's really isn't that she's really not that much older than I am.
- 2:27:44Douglas: Um, and with a lot of not just you, but a lot of people come back to town that I have really good conversations with now and then they catch up and stuff.
- 2:27:52Douglas: And it's like, I hardly speak, I I don't I hardly spoke to these people in my whole time.
- 2:27:56Douglas: You didn't know, yeah, you didn't know.
- 2:27:57Douglas: And now they come back and I'm having these really cool conversations with them.
- 2:28:00Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:28:01Douglas: And it's it's it's nice to have those connections and those conversations.
- 2:28:05Douglas: Because we had this we all experienced a lot of the same stuff.
- 2:28:09Kay Dunning: Right.
- 2:28:09Douglas: We just did it at different stages in our life when we were experiencing it.
- 2:28:12Kay Dunning: Exactly.
- 2:28:13Kay Dunning: Well, that's you know, I I um hang out in the fort and stuff like that, and and a lot of those people were my babysitters.
- 2:28:19Kay Dunning: But we're great friends now, you know.
- 2:28:22Kay Dunning: It's it's wonderful.
- 2:28:23Kay Dunning: It's wonderful.
- 2:28:24Kay Dunning: So um, that's one more thing I I forgot that we used to do too, and I don't know if your family ever did this, was um did you ever do um like the traveling potluck dinners?
- 2:28:36Kay Dunning: So for Thanksgiving, I think we were usually up at the Greg's house, but for Christmas we would have a traveling dinner.
- 2:28:44Douglas: Okay.
- 2:28:44Kay Dunning: And um we would go up to Vera Smith.
- 2:28:47Kay Dunning: Do you remember her?
- 2:28:48Kay Dunning: She was my godmother.
- 2:28:50Kay Dunning: And so we would go up to her house for um French onion soup.
- 2:28:54Kay Dunning: She made the best French onion soup.
- 2:28:56Kay Dunning: And then we would um go to uh Ted and Mimi's house for uh the main dish usually.
- 2:29:02Kay Dunning: And then sometimes dessert was at our place, and sometimes it was at um a lot of times it was at Allie and Marty Cortis's house.
- 2:29:10Kay Dunning: Um but I remember one year Ted arranged, Ted Greg arranged I and it I was pretty little, so my memory may not be right, but a um a sleigh that I remember going in front of the uh barracks buildings in this sleigh that he had gotten, and we were all bundled in there.
- 2:29:29Kay Dunning: Did he have horses pulling it or I don't remember what was pulling?
- 2:29:32Kay Dunning: It could have been a snowmobile.
- 2:29:33Kay Dunning: Yeah, I don't remember for sure what was pulling it.
- 2:29:36Kay Dunning: I don't think it was horses, but um oh that'd be cool as heck.
- 2:29:39Kay Dunning: Yeah, and I don't remember I I've kind of talked with Annette about it a little bit, and I don't know if if she I think she remembers remembers something, but I I I can't remember what what it was.
- 2:29:51Kay Dunning: But yeah, I just have this vision of us going by the um the barracks buildings in the snow at Christmas time, and it was just so much fun.
- 2:29:58Kay Dunning: And um, and I was the I was the youngest out of that group by a long ways because they were my babysitters.
- 2:30:04Kay Dunning: But um, we would play spoons, and you know that game spoons, um after uh dinner, and they would Ted Mimi had a uh a bar there, and so whoever lost had to drink whatever concoction, not alcoholic, um whatever concoction they would make up.
- 2:30:24Kay Dunning: Well, I'm the youngest, and I lost all the time.
- 2:30:27Kay Dunning: I don't know what I was drinking, but it was a lot of yeah, it was really yucky stuff.
- 2:30:34Kay Dunning: So I remember one time too, my brother um, we were down in the uh basement, and I don't know if you know this, but they have the pool table that Soapy Smith um really yeah, died on.
- 2:30:46Kay Dunning: I d was it Soapy?
- 2:30:49Kay Dunning: It was yes, it was, yeah.
- 2:30:50Kay Dunning: Really?
- 2:30:51Kay Dunning: I didn't know that.
- 2:30:52Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 2:30:53Kay Dunning: Um and so that's all badass.
- 2:30:55Kay Dunning: I'm 99% sure it's Sophie Smith and not the good guy.
- 2:30:58Kay Dunning: I can't remember what was the who was the who the good guy was, um the guy that shot him.
- 2:31:03Douglas: I don't remember the good guys, we always remember the bad guys.
- 2:31:06Kay Dunning: Yeah, well, i i it I I know it it's it's the one that Sophie Smith um died on.
- 2:31:10Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 2:31:11Kay Dunning: And so that pool table is I don't know how they got it down there.
- 2:31:14Kay Dunning: Because have you ever have you ever been down in the I've been in one of the basements over there, yeah.
- 2:31:17Douglas: I don't know how you get a pool table down there either.
- 2:31:19Kay Dunning: Stone walls, yeah.
- 2:31:20Kay Dunning: And so they've got it down there, and um there was really no clearance around the thing.
- 2:31:27Kay Dunning: And my I was standing back in the corner and my my brother was shooting, and he he pulled back, and it was my first black eye I ever got.
- 2:31:35Kay Dunning: He stick right in my eye.
- 2:31:38Kay Dunning: It was like, okay.
- 2:31:40Kay Dunning: But yeah, a lot of a lot of fun uh Christmases, I remember.
- 2:31:44Kay Dunning: So and a lot of they were always snowy, they were always pretty and snowy and yeah.
- 2:31:51Douglas: I remember a lot of snowy Christmas.
- 2:31:52Douglas: So there's a couple in high school that seemed like it just snowed like the day before Christmas.
- 2:31:56Douglas: That there were some there tourists.
- 2:31:58Kay Dunning: Yeah, it's just beautiful.
- 2:31:59Kay Dunning: Always and uh do uh are you old enough to remember um Do you remember the the bank used to have um competitions to this?
- 2:32:10Kay Dunning: It doesn't have to do with Christmas, it has uh other holidays.
- 2:32:12Kay Dunning: But um kids would draw pictures um for Halloween and the winning picture from like the class or whatever we got to choose who was winning picture would paint it on the business business windows.
- 2:32:24Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 2:32:25Kay Dunning: I remember getting to Trudy won one year and um and we painted it at Bell Store.
- 2:32:31Douglas: Okay.
- 2:32:31Kay Dunning: And then do you remember the Easter egg um contest?
- 2:32:35Douglas: Yes, the little basketball front of the bank and you have all the different eggs.
- 2:32:40Kay Dunning: Yeah, do they still do stuff in the world?
- 2:32:42Douglas: I don't think they've done that in years.
- 2:32:43Kay Dunning: I think the chamber the chamber should do stuff like that.
- 2:32:46Kay Dunning: Yeah, you know, bring have different age divisions and stuff.
- 2:32:49Douglas: And just some of the things that you were talking about, like with the sleigh and everything, when you're talking about that, it seems there's all sorts of different things that when we're kids.
- 2:32:56Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:32:57Douglas: It seems like such a group of just ingenious people looking at all these cool things to make happen.
- 2:33:02Kay Dunning: Yes.
- 2:33:03Douglas: And I know there's still that talent level here.
- 2:33:05Kay Dunning: Oh heavens, yeah.
- 2:33:06Douglas: But it doesn't some of that stuff it doesn't maybe it's happening, I'm just stuck in my own little world and not seeing it.
- 2:33:12Kay Dunning: Well, you're not willing to change diapers, so you know there's I'm available for fun stuff, okay?
- 2:33:18Douglas: But uh you know, it was fun to do the Christmas or the Easter egg thing.
- 2:33:22Douglas: It was the to see all the the paintings in the windows for Halloween and stuff, and so there's there's different things that they'd be there for a little bit and then they'd go or they're there for a long time, and then whether it's interest waned or whatever.
- 2:33:35Douglas: I but there we were we were talking about that last year during the uh Independence Day celebration.
- 2:33:41Douglas: It's like yeah, we used to have the bed races going through all the different things that we had is that when we're kids, like, man, that'd be really cool.
- 2:33:47Douglas: And and that's Bryson Tyler's like, we need to have a hot dog eating contest.
- 2:33:50Douglas: So that's that's why we had the hot dog eating contest this year.
- 2:33:53Kay Dunning: I still want to get the bed races going back because that was that would be fantastic.
- 2:33:58Douglas: First time I always had the bed.
- 2:33:59Douglas: Races are great until I competed in it.
- 2:34:02Kay Dunning: Oh.
- 2:34:02Kay Dunning: Oh.
- 2:34:03Douglas: And then you start at Third Avenue, you go to sixth, and then you come back to third.
- 2:34:10Kay Dunning: Which way is sixth?
- 2:34:11Kay Dunning: That way.
- 2:34:12Douglas: Oh, it was fine.
- 2:34:14Kay Dunning: I thought they went down the hill.
- 2:34:15Douglas: No.
- 2:34:16Douglas: Oh.
- 2:34:16Douglas: No, you start at Heisler's Corner.
- 2:34:18Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 2:34:19Douglas: So Talia's Treasures.
- 2:34:20Douglas: Yep.
- 2:34:20Douglas: And you go down to by the Elks, where it used to be the Elks, now Thor's.
- 2:34:24Douglas: You go to that intersection at six.
- 2:34:25Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:34:25Douglas: And you come back.
- 2:34:26Douglas: I was thinking, this is a no-brainer.
- 2:34:28Douglas: I think it was one year at this either my between my junior and senior year, between my senior year and freshman year in college, Erwin Hurts is like, hey, we don't have enough bed race people for the bed race.
- 2:34:39Douglas: You guys need to because we're hanging out.
- 2:34:41Kay Dunning: Four o'clock in the you gotta go be there at four o'clock.
- 2:34:44Douglas: Well, it's I think it was because we're always hanging out, Jesse Hurts, Mary Hurts, you know, Kurt and Carl, and there's a group of us that are always hanging out, Grant Williams.
- 2:34:51Douglas: And so he's like, I've got a bed if you guys want to do it.
- 2:34:54Douglas: Perfect.
- 2:34:55Douglas: I can't remember who is pushing.
- 2:34:56Douglas: Jesse was on the running it.
- 2:34:58Douglas: Well, the you think when you're that age that you're in good shape year-round.
- 2:35:04Douglas: But this is after the summer, you're sprinting.
- 2:35:08Kay Dunning: Pushing a bed.
- 2:35:09Douglas: Yeah, it's downhill going that way.
- 2:35:12Kay Dunning: Oh.
- 2:35:12Kay Dunning: It's uphill.
- 2:35:13Kay Dunning: I guess you never really think about it.
- 2:35:15Douglas: You never think about that until you're racing and pushing a bed.
- 2:35:18Douglas: And it's uphill coming back.
- 2:35:21Douglas: Oh my gosh, my legs and lungs have never burnt so much.
- 2:35:25Kay Dunning: Did you win?
- 2:35:26Douglas: No, I don't I can't remember.
- 2:35:27Douglas: We might have.
- 2:35:28Douglas: I can't remember.
- 2:35:29Douglas: I just remember that I never wanted to do that again.
- 2:35:32Douglas: At the end, but ever since then, I was like, that'd be really fun.
- 2:35:35Douglas: We need to do that again, and I need to be driving.
- 2:35:38Kay Dunning: So did did some people sit on the bed?
- 2:35:42Douglas: You had one person sitting on the bed to steer.
- 2:35:44Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 2:35:46Douglas: Because they had it set up so you could steer.
- 2:35:47Douglas: And then you had four people pushing on the back.
- 2:35:50Douglas: And so you'd have a bed set up, kind of they'd usually weld them together, got your wheels, you got a push bar on the back of it, and when they said go, you're trying to get in front of her because there's a cone at the end.
- 2:36:00Douglas: And so you're three, four wide on the street, and you gotta get down there and you gotta turn, and so you gotta be fast enough to get in front of the other people, and then coming back.
- 2:36:09Kay Dunning: Could you have an air mattress bed?
- 2:36:11Kay Dunning: Could that be?
- 2:36:12Douglas: Well, you gotta have wheels under it, Kay.
- 2:36:14Kay Dunning: I know a dolly.
- 2:36:16Douglas: There wasn't really a mattress on the bed.
- 2:36:18Douglas: It just had to be like a bed frame, and you had something.
- 2:36:20Kay Dunning: Oh, okay.
- 2:36:21Douglas: It's not a full bed, as I recall.
- 2:36:24Kay Dunning: Hmm.
- 2:36:24Kay Dunning: But this next uh next 4th of July.
- 2:36:27Kay Dunning: Next fourth of July, this next summer is gonna be a real blowout around the room.
- 2:36:31Douglas: There's gonna be a lot of stuff happening.
- 2:36:32Douglas: You're gonna be busy making all this happen.
- 2:36:36Kay Dunning: No, we'll get we'll get Susie Waterhouse on that one.
- 2:36:40Douglas: But I was talking about I I don't know if we'd get enough people to do it, but it'd be fun to do the business.
- 2:36:45Kay Dunning: You don't think we get enough people you oh in this town?
- 2:36:47Douglas: Well, it it stopped for a reason.
- 2:36:49Douglas: They stopped doing it for a reason.
- 2:36:53Douglas: And it's probably because not enough people want to do it.
- 2:36:55Douglas: I don't know.
- 2:36:55Kay Dunning: Maybe if we bring it back, do you think if I think people would be willing to do it in a heartbeat.
- 2:37:00Kay Dunning: Fourth of July, probably not the fair one, but the fourth of July.
- 2:37:03Douglas: Yeah, for the 4th of July.
- 2:37:04Kay Dunning: Oh yeah.
- 2:37:05Kay Dunning: Oh yeah.
- 2:37:06Douglas: Bring that back.
- 2:37:07Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:37:07Douglas: I'll see if I can have some friends weld up some bed frames for us for this next year.
- 2:37:11Douglas: Maybe if we provided the bed frames.
- 2:37:13Douglas: Oh yeah.
- 2:37:14Douglas: They just had to provide the teams.
- 2:37:16Kay Dunning: That would be a good thing.
- 2:37:16Douglas: They just had to provide the pushers so they didn't have to build a bed racing bed.
- 2:37:21Kay Dunning: And you'd have like four of them.
- 2:37:22Kay Dunning: Five.
- 2:37:24Douglas: I think three or four.
- 2:37:26Kay Dunning: You know, they're wanting people to take stuff out from the uh recycling plant for them.
- 2:37:30Douglas: From the recycling plant.
- 2:37:31Douglas: So they don't have to move it all.
- 2:37:32Douglas: Yeah, see if they've got any bed frames out there and get those set up.
- 2:37:35Kay Dunning: Somebody left them a mattress the other day.
- 2:37:38Douglas: So figure out the rules for that.
- 2:37:40Douglas: I'm gonna have to get in touch with Stony Hertz because his dad always ran that.
- 2:37:44Douglas: See if he remembers the rules for it.
- 2:37:45Douglas: I bet you he'd get in touch with Stony.
- 2:37:49Kay Dunning: He could help with the weld.
- 2:37:50Kay Dunning: Get Randy Sykes to help welding, you know.
- 2:37:52Douglas: Well, but then the other thing is if I put a team in it, do I want to get like lightweight aluminum for one of them and everybody else has things?
- 2:37:59Kay Dunning: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 2:38:01Douglas: Marty's like, yeah.
- 2:38:02Douglas: Yeah, that's I want to build a bed myself.
- 2:38:05Douglas: Do you trust him?
- 2:38:08Kay Dunning: How much do you trust in the building?
- 2:38:10Douglas: I know some people that got some experience with carbon fiber.
- 2:38:12Douglas: That's the bed I'm pushing.
- 2:38:17Kay Dunning: Huh.
- 2:38:17Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:38:18Kay Dunning: No, no conflict of interest there whatsoever.
- 2:38:21Douglas: No conflict of interest, none at all.
- 2:38:23Douglas: So in that case, build your own bed, figure out whatever you want to do with it.
- 2:38:30Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:38:31Douglas: If if you know somebody that can build stuff out of carbon fiber or something like that, you got a friend that works at Boeing.
- 2:38:37Douglas: Can that's expensive stuff, but uh well, but if you if you want, if you wanna, if that's where you want to spend your money, then you know, so be it.
- 2:38:46Douglas: Then so be it.
- 2:38:47Kay Dunning: The prize is only $50.
- 2:38:49Douglas: The prize ain't gonna cover the price of the bed.
- 2:38:51Douglas: There's no way that's gonna happen.
- 2:38:53Kay Dunning: That bed's gonna last forever.
- 2:38:55Douglas: But the bragging rights of being the bed race winner of the 2027 Haines Independence Day celebration.
- 2:39:03Kay Dunning: I like that idea.
- 2:39:04Douglas: That's gotta be worth it.
- 2:39:06Kay Dunning: Could you also repurpose it and put like a target on the back of the frame and then have the um fire hoses shoot the bed down the street?
- 2:39:16Douglas: I got one better.
- 2:39:18Douglas: You put two people on there, one's the driver, one's the gunner, and they've got the super soaker squirt guns.
- 2:39:27Kay Dunning: Shooting at each other, squirting at each other.
- 2:39:29Kay Dunning: Love it.
- 2:39:31Kay Dunning: You can start carrying the code.
- 2:39:33Douglas: Or the crowd.
- 2:39:34Kay Dunning: Oh they could shoot whoever they want.
- 2:39:37Douglas: Maybe the crowd wants to shoot back.
- 2:39:39Kay Dunning: That's true.
- 2:39:39Kay Dunning: That's true.
- 2:39:40Kay Dunning: You know, it was pretty warm this year.
- 2:39:42Douglas: It was really warm this year for 4th of July.
- 2:39:45Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:39:45Kay Dunning: Oh, I like that.
- 2:39:46Kay Dunning: And you could do it again in the winter on the ice, you know.
- 2:39:49Kay Dunning: There you go.
- 2:39:50Douglas: You put skis on it, put skis on there and have to throw snowballs at them.
- 2:39:54Kay Dunning: Oh, a ski bed race.
- 2:39:55Kay Dunning: Ski bed race.
- 2:39:56Kay Dunning: Oh, that would be kind of cool.
- 2:39:58Douglas: Don't you guys feel like you're not gonna have enough time to be in Minnesota?
- 2:40:01Douglas: You should just sell that house.
- 2:40:03Douglas: Come up here.
- 2:40:04Douglas: You've got so many things.
- 2:40:05Douglas: Exactly.
- 2:40:08Douglas: You come up here, you've got so many things to coordinate.
- 2:40:12Douglas: This is your new energy, right?
- 2:40:14Douglas: This is your mom manifesting herself with you with all the things she does.
- 2:40:19Kay Dunning: I don't think my mom would ever be running or manifesting or running something.
- 2:40:23Douglas: But she gave back to the community, she was volunteering all the time.
- 2:40:25Douglas: Yeah.
- 2:40:26Douglas: And this is a way to carry on that tradition in a different way, Kay.
- 2:40:29Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 2:40:30Douglas: I have faith in you to make it happen.
- 2:40:34Kay Dunning: How about you, Marty?
- 2:40:35Kay Dunning: You think, yeah.
- 2:40:36Douglas: She's the first, she's she's the one, right?
- 2:40:38Douglas: That's we've been waiting for Kay to come back and take care of this stuff for us.
- 2:40:43Kay Dunning: It's just Rick.
- 2:40:43Kay Dunning: It's all Rick.
- 2:40:44Kay Dunning: We'll we'll put him on it.
- 2:40:46Douglas: How you delegate that labor within your household.
- 2:40:48Kay Dunning: You've been falling told is 100%.
- 2:40:52Douglas: Is 100% up to you.
- 2:40:53Douglas: But I just know you're the leader that we need for these activities to take place.
- 2:40:58Kay Dunning: There we go.
- 2:40:58Kay Dunning: There we go.
- 2:40:59Kay Dunning: Wow, I know you got some pretty good ones.
- 2:41:00Kay Dunning: I'll talk to the I'll throw the ideas out to the current leaders.
- 2:41:04Douglas: To the current leaders and see.
- 2:41:05Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:41:06Douglas: Again, how you make this happen, Kay, doesn't matter.
- 2:41:10Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 2:41:11Douglas: Just the fact that it happens.
- 2:41:13Douglas: When it happens, I'm giving you 100% credit.
- 2:41:16Kay Dunning: A lot of pressure.
- 2:41:17Douglas: Doesn't matter, doesn't matter how you make it happen.
- 2:41:20Douglas: Any of these things happen, it's all you.
- 2:41:23Kay Dunning: Okay.
- 2:41:23Kay Dunning: There we go.
- 2:41:24Kay Dunning: I'm on it.
- 2:41:26Kay Dunning: That's one of my grandson says.
- 2:41:27Kay Dunning: So that's I'm on it, Grandma.
- 2:41:30Douglas: He's lightweight enough, he could steer one of the beds.
- 2:41:33Kay Dunning: Oh, that's all I need, yeah.
- 2:41:34Douglas: See, get Louie up here to steer the bed in the race.
- 2:41:38Douglas: Do you know make this a family affair?
- 2:41:41Kay Dunning: He likes to drive the boat, and you know what he says?
- 2:41:43Kay Dunning: I'll go fast, Grandma.
- 2:41:44Kay Dunning: I'll go fast.
- 2:41:45Douglas: See?
- 2:41:45Douglas: That's a he's a race car.
- 2:41:47Douglas: He's ready to race already.
- 2:41:49Kay Dunning: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:41:50Kay Dunning: Well we'll get him a little helmet and he's gonna go.
- 2:41:53Douglas: He's golden, good to go.
- 2:41:55Douglas: I like it.
- 2:41:56Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 2:41:56Douglas: See, you did not know you had these resources until we started talking about this.
- 2:42:00Douglas: Oh, yeah.
- 2:42:00Douglas: You're like 90% there.
- 2:42:02Kay Dunning: And this is that's some stuff that my son would do, you know.
- 2:42:08Douglas: I'm just saying, you just gotta change their schedule for when they come up.
- 2:42:11Douglas: Have them here for the fourth.
- 2:42:13Kay Dunning: Yep.
- 2:42:13Kay Dunning: So they can be up here earlier.
- 2:42:15Douglas: Yep.
- 2:42:16Kay Dunning: Participate.
- 2:42:16Kay Dunning: Yeah.
- 2:42:17Kay Dunning: Yeah, Doug.
- 2:42:20Kay Dunning: Thanks.
- 2:42:23Douglas: I'm glad I've got your next year schedule for you, Kay.
- 2:42:25Douglas: Thank you.
- 2:42:26Douglas: Yes, you're welcome for that.
- 2:42:27Douglas: You'll be I know people going into retirement sometimes are a little apprehensive about what they're gonna do next.
- 2:42:34Kay Dunning: Yeah, I don't I now you know.
- 2:42:36Kay Dunning: And there we go.
- 2:42:37Kay Dunning: Now I know.
- 2:42:38Douglas: Now you know.
- 2:42:39Douglas: Yep.
- 2:42:40Douglas: Well, thank you, Kay.
- 2:42:43Kay Dunning: Doug, thank you so much.
- 2:42:44Douglas: It's been a lot of fun, and uh I appreciate you.
- 2:42:47Douglas: I I at first you didn't want to do this.
- 2:42:49Kay Dunning: I was nervous about coming over.
- 2:42:50Douglas: I hope, I hope you it was a lot of fun.
- 2:42:52Douglas: It really was.
- 2:42:54Kay Dunning: It was so much fun.
- 2:42:54Kay Dunning: Thank you so much for having me.
- 2:42:56Douglas: You bet.
- 2:42:56Douglas: And take care, and I'll look forward to next year's Fourth of July celebration.
- 2:43:00Kay Dunning: I can't wait to hear you do Sam McGee.
- 2:43:04Douglas: Thanks for watching this episode of Doug Has Questions.
- 2:43:07Douglas: I hope this episode has provided some better understanding, some inspiration, some connection for you.
- 2:43:12Douglas: If it has, or if you have any comments, reach out to us on YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram.
- 2:43:17Douglas: Thanks again for watching.
