Transcript
- 0:14Alright, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon as we
- 0:17kick off our week here on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:20Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours talking
- 0:23sports with you. Thank you for starting your
- 0:25afternoon with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:28program at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:30Scott Dockerman's going to join us.
- 0:32He covers college football for The Athletic.
- 0:34We'll take a look ahead to what certainly seems, at least on
- 0:38paper, to be a very fun weekend. The 1st 2 for sure.
- 0:41We'll see if the two dogs are barking in the later games.
- 0:44We'll get in the first round, the College Football Playoffs.
- 0:46Pick Doc's brain on that college football topic as well as others
- 0:50coming up here at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:52Get a sneak peek at Vanderbilt in Iowa with doc that's 1230
- 0:57Bill Seals covers Iowa State for cyclonereport.com, part of the
- 1:02on three media network. He will join us to kick off our
- 1:05number 2 football and a basketball, both men's and
- 1:09women's with bill coming up here at at one O clock.
- 1:12And then Nick Athan he's Chiefs blitz.com.
- 1:16That's his website, that's his podcast.
- 1:19Different time for chiefs fans with three weeks left in the
- 1:21regular season. They have been eliminated first
- 1:24time since 2000 and what, 14 I think it was since they didn't
- 1:28make the playoffs. I should feel happy.
- 1:30I don't. I hate the way Patrick Mahomes
- 1:32left the field. I do.
- 1:33I mean, this guy's a phenomenal player, maybe the face of the
- 1:36league for the last decade. He's in that rarefied error and
- 1:40you just hate to see it. But anyways, they are out and
- 1:44we'll talk NFL and probably a lot of it here in the first
- 1:48segment of the program. Fun day in the NFL yesterday, 2
- 1:51quarterbacks, much malign, Moe Knicks being one of them, JJ
- 1:55McCarthy being the other. Both of those QB's had really
- 1:58productive days. Both of those teams LED their
- 2:00both those QB's LED their teams to victory.
- 2:03So we'll get into that. What else?
- 2:04We got the Heisman. Diego Pavia, he's a punk.
- 2:08There's just no getting around it.
- 2:09There's no getting around it. The country is going to be
- 2:11rooting for the Iowa Hawkeyes when they match up in Tampa on
- 2:14the 31st of December. That's 11:00 kick.
- 2:17Did you say 11:00 in the morning our time?
- 2:20I would have to look again. I think it is.
- 2:22I think it's early. In fact, I've got it right here
- 2:24in front of me. It's 11:00 on ESPN, Iowa,
- 2:27Vanderbilt and yeah, have you finished 2nd and promptly told
- 2:32the voters to F off? Remember those yours that it was
- 2:35a 10 AM central kick off for the Outback Bowl.
- 2:37There was one that kicked early. Was it?
- 2:39Was it that one? Or was it the game?
- 2:40It was that one. Was it that?
- 2:41One, it was that one because I made one of those.
- 2:44And even 11 AM on New Year's Day, after a night of inviting
- 2:49on New Year's Eve, it was a difficult wake up call.
- 2:52To get there, Tampa for two of them.
- 2:53Yeah, I was in Tampa for two of them.
- 2:56They were fun. They were fun in the press box.
- 2:59They they they gave you a the bloom and onion.
- 3:02OK, yes. And what was the other thing?
- 3:04That they were big? On that's the one that was the
- 3:06most famous. It was that or the coconut
- 3:08shrimp. That's right.
- 3:09I think half the media got coconut shrimp.
- 3:11Half the media was served at anyways.
- 3:13Nobody cares about that, but that's what how I remember.
- 3:16'Cause it's not an Outback anymore.
- 3:17No, I know. Nobody get get for Relia quest.
- 3:20I have no idea what it is. Is it an insurance company?
- 3:23Sounds like it could be. I don't think it is an.
- 3:25Internet firm? Maybe a Bitcoin?
- 3:29How many of the bowl game sponsors do you actually know
- 3:31what they do? That's a great question.
- 3:33Half. Oh, that's a really good, well,
- 3:37Pop Tarts. That's an easy one.
- 3:39Right. Yeah, the military, yes.
- 3:41Yeah, a first responder. Guaranteed rates got to be a
- 3:45banking thing. I think that's a mortgage.
- 3:47Company, mortgage company. OK.
- 3:50And the ones that are named after the cities, I mean the
- 3:52Idaho potatoes. Pretty straightforward.
- 3:54Yes, that. That's a good one.
- 3:55Yeah, what are what are we missing?
- 3:56Music City? Alamo Independence.
- 3:59Chick-fil-A. Peach Bowl.
- 4:01OK, we got Chick-fil-A. We know Chick-fil-A.
- 4:02Yeah, yeah. We can knock that one out.
- 4:04That's actually what Jack wanted yesterday after his wrestling
- 4:07tournament. But he couldn't get one because
- 4:09it was closed on Sunday. It was Sunday.
- 4:10He was Sunday. Yeah.
- 4:13So a lot of them have the name, like the Holiday Bowl, but then
- 4:16they tag a sponsor to it. And I'm not sure that you know
- 4:20that. Yeah, you're right.
- 4:22Probably couldn't name very many of them. 68 ventures.
- 4:25What's that? The Xbox bowl?
- 4:27OK, I know. What?
- 4:28An Xbox What? Bowl is that.
- 4:29That's Missouri State and Arkansas State.
- 4:31The one played in Frisco. That'll be Thursday.
- 4:34Thursday evening get to see most state former Missouri Valley
- 4:38Football Conference program that wasn't very good.
- 4:41They are in a bowl game. Yeah, these these next three
- 4:43nights are rough, let's be honest.
- 4:45You're not excited for? It no, I'm not excited for
- 4:48Jacksonville state, Troy Old Dominion S maybe that One South
- 4:51Florida, Delaware, Louisiana Lafiette most state, Arkansas
- 4:55State. Now I think I'll pass because
- 4:56Thursday night might be the game of the year in the NFL.
- 4:59It might be as big a game as we've had in the NFL.
- 5:01One of these teams is going to be be the one seed.
- 5:04The other team would fall to the five seed and that's assuming
- 5:07San Francisco doesn't take it from a right there right there
- 5:11on the cusp as well. Didn't see any of the locals
- 5:16play basketball yesterday. You did.
- 5:18I didn't. I couldn't watch them.
- 5:19I had the Iowa game on at one of the TV's yesterday. 1 by 40.
- 5:23Yeah. It was didn't play 25 minutes.
- 5:25Yes, finally got a little bit of rest, which is a good thing.
- 5:28So watch the first half of that. And then I fell asleep.
- 5:31Did you? Yeah.
- 5:32That bad? That boring.
- 5:34It was halftime. Bears were up 31, three and we
- 5:39had a late Christmas night and then I had to get up early for
- 5:41Jack's wrestling. Tournament which he won his
- 5:43class. Well, he did well.
- 5:46I saw him on the podium. Yes.
- 5:47Yeah. And they had a one under him.
- 5:49Yep. Absolutely.
- 5:49He was standing higher than the two beside him so I just assumed
- 5:52he won it. In his first real tournament,
- 5:55Yep, he won more matches than I did in my wrestling.
- 5:58Career. Is that right?
- 6:00He had his raise hand his his arm raised twice.
- 6:03I did once in my career, 1 to 23 on the wrestling mat for old
- 6:06pops. He's 2 and O2 and O had some
- 6:10fun. Now he's so little, as you know
- 6:13that there were, it was the lowest weight class and it's
- 6:17kindergarteners and pre-K. Both the kids he wrestled aren't
- 6:20in kindergarten yet. So had a little bit of
- 6:22advantage, but he's only had three practices.
- 6:24He had fun. Didn't get his Chick-fil-A
- 6:26afterwards, but he was pretty good.
- 6:27Good weekend on that front. But a dad needed a nap because
- 6:31it was an early, early wake up call to get up to Nevada.
- 6:33That's where we went up to wrestle to road trip.
- 6:35Yep, took the road trip out there.
- 6:37He slept on the way, he slept on the way home.
- 6:39He was tuckered out too. And the dad needed one in and
- 6:42the Iowa game in the first half. I mean, that Western Michigan
- 6:44team, like they're ranked in like, you know, 220 something
- 6:47like that. They're awful.
- 6:49And they're there's so many bad teams in college basketball and
- 6:54just it's the new reality. I mean, we see some of the
- 6:57issues Drake's run into. You see programs that we're just
- 7:00used to the South Dakota states, they're good.
- 7:02And then when they go up now against major conference
- 7:05conference competition, it's so different than what we're used
- 7:08to. It's a different world.
- 7:10And it's not good for the mid major fans, for the you and I,
- 7:12Drake fans in our audience and and whatever program that you
- 7:15went to that you kind of feel like you have a shot.
- 7:18You wonder. We saw it last year.
- 7:20Arkansas was our Cinderella. Yeah, that was our Cinderella a
- 7:24year ago that. Doesn't really.
- 7:26It doesn't make. Sense no not at all.
- 7:27But that was the only double digit seed we saw so few a teams
- 7:31get in. And secondly pulling upsets
- 7:34unfortunately. Is this going to become our new
- 7:35reality? I hope not, but I think you're
- 7:37probably leaning in that direction.
- 7:39Yeah. I mean, based on what we saw on
- 7:41Thursday night, it just was going to be such a let down to
- 7:44watch either of them play. So I decided to watch football
- 7:47all day, and I'm glad I did because I saw some phenomenal
- 7:49football, including the Bills, come roaring back to take care
- 7:52of the Patriots. You started the program and I
- 7:55have right here on the top of my NFL notes.
- 7:57Mea culpa, we have two quarterbacks that I have
- 8:00questioned a lot. At least for one week.
- 8:03Let's start with Bonex now before the comeback happened and
- 8:07some decisions there by the Packers going for the knockout
- 8:10below trying to go up 3 scores didn't happen before they score
- 8:15on the drive that I think cut it to a maybe it was a single score
- 8:18game. That interception was just
- 8:19dropped like it was under throwing.
- 8:20It was a deep shot. Packer guy didn't make the play.
- 8:24Right McKinney. He came a long way to knock it
- 8:26down, yes. He did and is like, oh, Nix was
- 8:29late on that throw. He had him open.
- 8:30He waited too long. He he saw that little double
- 8:32clutch that he had in there. He waited and this is Bo Nix.
- 8:35And then from then on. He was almost perfect.
- 8:38He was great. He was almost.
- 8:39Perfect. Every throw on time, every
- 8:42decision, it was what you see from when that good Bo Nix
- 8:46happens. But that's what you get.
- 8:48And he was so, so good. I've changed my opinion on the
- 8:52he's. Got a chance?
- 8:53He's got a chance, absolutely, to be year in, year out, a top
- 8:5812 quarter, yeah, top top 12 every year.
- 9:00You know he's going to be there, right?
- 9:01Some years he might be in the top five or six.
- 9:04Some years maybe it's more towards the medium.
- 9:05But he is there. I think he's solidified himself
- 9:08there. And JJ McCarthy and I get it.
- 9:10The caveat Dallas defense. Quinn Williams.
- 9:13Went out, you got to give them credit, they're better.
- 9:15Still, those throws, those plays, those decisions, they're
- 9:19it looked like it is clicking. How about the naked boot for the
- 9:23touchdown? That was great.
- 9:24He's into the end zone. It was awesome.
- 9:26It was wonderful. And those are the things.
- 9:28He's a different cat. He's kind of weird.
- 9:30He is. He's a weird duck.
- 9:32That's all right. If you get guys.
- 9:34Because listening to Collinsworth and the way that he
- 9:36was describing how everybody in the locker room just wants it to
- 9:39happen. They want it to work for this
- 9:42guy. We know it hasn't, but what you
- 9:44saw, you don't still spend the draft pick that they did for a
- 9:47guy that's going to be, he might be OK, right?
- 9:50You don't do that. And his grand scheme of things,
- 9:52yes, it'll probably be looked at as a disappointment.
- 9:55But if he can get to that level from what we saw at the
- 9:57beginning of his career, you would take that right now, I
- 9:59think, as a Viking fan. The beginning of the season.
- 10:01Can he be OK? Yes, if he can be OK.
- 10:04Flores isn't going anywhere. The defense is going to be set
- 10:07up, KOC running the offense. You are set if the quarterback
- 10:11is just OK. And we've seen that same
- 10:13Darnold, good, solid mm, hmm, JJ McCarthy even not maybe a step
- 10:18below what we saw a year ago out of Darnold.
- 10:20He gets to that level. The Vikings can bounce back in a
- 10:23big time. Win yeah, three games left this
- 10:25season. Obviously, we'll see if the, you
- 10:28know, the progress continues in an upward trajectory.
- 10:30It has for the last a couple of weeks a phenomenal.
- 10:33It was a great week in the NFL, Some meaningful games to say the
- 10:37very least. How about old man Rivers?
- 10:39I thought they were going to win that football game.
- 10:40So was Seattle looking ahead? I got to believe that that has
- 10:43had something to do with the kind of playing with their food
- 10:47type. They're a good football team,
- 10:48Trent. They are.
- 10:49I know you're not a Donald guy and you're not alone.
- 10:52There's a lot of people that belong to that club.
- 10:55They couldn't run the ball though.
- 10:56That was surprising to me as much as anything.
- 10:58Because when we've seen crappy Darnold, well, we just rely on
- 11:02the run game. We're going to be fine.
- 11:04They couldn't do it against an Indianapolis team that had
- 11:06struggled at different times against the run this year.
- 11:08That was maybe the most, the most surprising part of this
- 11:11game. The Colts right now,
- 11:13defensively, they give up a ton through the air and that means
- 11:16they're rushed. Defense is good.
- 11:18But to not be able to get anything against them, that was
- 11:21eye opening and I think concerning with the Rams on deck
- 11:23next for obviously Seattle. But what did we get?
- 11:262 field goals in the final 40 seconds?
- 11:28Less than that, even. It might have been.
- 11:31It was absolutely I, I was. Getting out of Shine kept coming
- 11:34back on with updates in the game I was watching.
- 11:36Oh yeah, 'cause you were over there, I was on red zone and
- 11:39getting dinner ready and wait, they're they're kicking a field
- 11:43goal. I thought it just.
- 11:44Right, you shook the lead. Right.
- 11:46Can't put two and two together. What happened here?
- 11:48Seattle must win. Got it done.
- 11:51But Rivers, he was fine. He was.
- 11:54And we see so awful quarterback play.
- 11:57And when a guy comes in out of nowhere, and I thought that was
- 12:01going to be the same thing. I thought this was going to be
- 12:03hideous and you were going to feel bad for him and what are
- 12:06you doing and what is Indianapolis doing?
- 12:08And that wasn't the case. It is still It was the full
- 12:11Philip, Philip Rivers for experience.
- 12:12You got passes that are completed, that have no velocity
- 12:16behind them, that are fluttering.
- 12:17They're not a spiral. They're coming up with that
- 12:19hideous throwing motion that he has.
- 12:21That's just. What you get through it on time
- 12:23and somehow got through that narrow window.
- 12:25I've made a career doing that. How he does it?
- 12:27I don't know, but it's it's, it's proof is in the pudding.
- 12:30There's an NFL quarterback whose arrow's pointing up on a team
- 12:33that we, I mean, nobody cares about the team I'm about to
- 12:35mention, you know, who's playing like a quarterback, who might be
- 12:38a quarterback. Tyler Shuck, Yes.
- 12:41Uh huh. He is, isn't he?
- 12:42Yes, this last couple of weeks, maybe even more than that.
- 12:45Look, nobody cares about the Saints.
- 12:46I get it. They're a bad football team.
- 12:49But a guy that, you know, we saw play in his college career, Iowa
- 12:53State beat him. So I'm a couple of places.
- 12:55Texas Tech. Texas Tech, Right?
- 12:57Exactly Tyler Shuckers looked OK as they beat Carolina yesterday.
- 13:02What else was a big game yesterday?
- 13:04Obviously the Packers Micah Parsons going down.
- 13:07I don't know if the point spread reacted to that.
- 13:10If Parsons 'cause it opened I think 3 1/2 by the the news came
- 13:14out and then the bears are now pick em favored.
- 13:18It's let me get the latest point spread.
- 13:20Bears and Packers on Saturday night.
- 13:25Green Bay is favored. Green Bay was favored by three.
- 13:29They're now favored by a point and 1/2.
- 13:30So the point spread reacted on the basis of the Parsons news
- 13:34'cause it sound like Watson might be able to play.
- 13:37Any fears that Christian Watson, that was a a devastating injury
- 13:41for him. I don't think that's going to be
- 13:43the case. Apparently, there's a pretty
- 13:45good chance there's no no punctured lung, no collapsed
- 13:48lung, nothing like that. He got back and flew home with
- 13:50the team last night and they're hopeful that he can be on the
- 13:53field this week. So, yeah, the numbers right now,
- 13:56the Packers favored a point and a half over the Bears.
- 13:59And what a just a massive, massive game coming up here on
- 14:03Saturday night. And that's a 720 kick off for
- 14:07that one. Christian Watson goes down,
- 14:09Yeah. But he's fine.
- 14:10He's fine. He's he flew home with the team.
- 14:13I know you're, I just did a piece on that when you were on
- 14:15the phone. There's no, there was no
- 14:17collapsed lung. He got back, he got on the
- 14:20plane, flew home with the team. And I read something this
- 14:22morning that there's a chance he's able to play on Saturday
- 14:25night. That's a huge difference.
- 14:27Because he's the speed of those of those receivers and Jordan
- 14:31Love, this guy throws more balls off his back foot.
- 14:33As accurate as I've ever seen. He really is off his back foot.
- 14:37I'm talking about. But Denver shut them down in the
- 14:40second in the second-half. Here's my question, and this is
- 14:42not a knock if Denver, if Denver gets to say, a Super Bowl or an
- 14:48AFC Championship, can you afford to play?
- 14:50Riley Moss, of course. And the reason I say that he's
- 14:54going to get a flag whether he deserves it or not.
- 14:57And it it bothers the hell out of me.
- 14:58I know it does. Because a some of them are his
- 15:01fault. Clearly every DB does that.
- 15:03Of course he gets more calls against him because he's white
- 15:08for part of it that aren't fouls.
- 15:13It's got I think 9 this year. I think maybe half of them are
- 15:15warranted. Maybe half.
- 15:17So you want to play a worst player?
- 15:18I don't. But I, I, I just know what's
- 15:20going to happen. There's going to be a big spot
- 15:22and it's, and it's going to be Riley Moss going up against one
- 15:24of the league's best receivers. And if it's a close play, flags
- 15:27coming out, whether it's warranted or not, I don't know
- 15:29if you can afford. To play him, he does play
- 15:31physical. He's a physical.
- 15:32Corner. He's a physical.
- 15:34Corner. But every cornerback you watch
- 15:36enough football grabs an arm briefly right, grabs one arm and
- 15:40never gets called. And it happened all throughout
- 15:43the the game yesterday. Riley Moss does it once.
- 15:46Here comes the flag. It drives me bananas that that
- 15:51the league does that to him. It really does.
- 15:53It's your fandom. Now part of it is for sure, but
- 15:56he but it's. And he's your neighbor.
- 16:00He played for Pizzetti, so that moved both Pizzetti's and that
- 16:03moves them up in my book. But my good God, he's a decent
- 16:07player. But why would you attack certain
- 16:09the way that they did? I have no idea.
- 16:10Right of anybody. About certain coming over to
- 16:13Parsons, too. Yeah, that was class act.
- 16:16That was class act. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:18Two guys that get it, two guys that get it.
- 16:21What else? Los Angeles beating the Rams.
- 16:23It was a big game yesterday. I mean, beating the Lions.
- 16:25The Lions, are they out? They It might come down, it
- 16:30might come down to Week 18. Bears Lions for a playoff.
- 16:32Or one of those two teams so. Or maybe both of them, really.
- 16:36Oh, absolutely. The Bears don't win this week
- 16:38and they still have to go to San Francisco.
- 16:40After that, it very well could come down to Lions Bears Winner
- 16:43in, loser out. Seriously.
- 16:47So right now, let me get the wild cards down.
- 16:49Let me get the the card game in front of me.
- 16:52Detroit's the 8th. Green Bay is the seven.
- 16:56So whoever wins Saturday night would take the two seed.
- 17:00The loser of that game falls to the seventh seed.
- 17:03What's Detroit have left? The.
- 17:07Steelers, Steelers. Here's their three games.
- 17:10They're home against the Steelers and then at Viking on
- 17:15Christmas Day. OK at the Bears?
- 17:19Come down to Week 18. So if they go, if they win, well
- 17:23give them let's go 3 and O OK, let's just give them three and
- 17:26O. That would give them a grand
- 17:30total of 11. Yeah, it comes down to that.
- 17:35And yes, 11 and six they would have the tiebreaker over.
- 17:40No, it'd be the Bears would be 10 and seven.
- 17:42Now, if the Bears win, say, in Week 17, let's give them a win
- 17:45against San Francisco. Oh, it's a tough game, though.
- 17:47That's San. Fran, it would still be a
- 17:48winning in scenario. The Lions would have the
- 17:50tiebreaker and that's an era. If the Bears and the Lions both
- 17:53finish eleven and six in that scenario, then the Lions would
- 17:56be in. The Bears would be out at 11:00
- 17:58and 6:00. That's ridiculous that meanwhile
- 18:02Carolina and or Tampa is going to slide in with nine wins.
- 18:08I mean, we have this conversation not every year, but
- 18:10most years, Yes, most years. It's what we have, though I
- 18:14don't got a problem with it. I really don't, no, you know
- 18:16what it is going to be is before the year.
- 18:17So I mean, oh God. You're feeling good about your
- 18:22Broncos. I.
- 18:23Am I mean, how can you not be right?
- 18:24I don't know if they're going to.
- 18:25Be the Holmes is dead and there was a real possibility and
- 18:28certainly if Denver would have lost yesterday, that if the
- 18:32Chiefs got in, it was going to be Chiefs Broncos in the first
- 18:35in the 27 matchup and there's not a Bronco fan in the world.
- 18:39Make me say, oh, I feel good about.
- 18:40This No, they're lying. If they do, they're lying.
- 18:43That's off the table. I'm I'm I'm really happy that
- 18:46the dynasty is over at least for the year right, But if you miss
- 18:49the beginnings, I hate the way it ended.
- 18:51I do. This guy is such a good football
- 18:54player. I can't stand him, but he's such
- 18:56a good football player. He's so good for the league.
- 18:59Yes, he's it's. Good for us watching football.
- 19:02Sure it is to have that guy out. There, he's a witch, he's a
- 19:05wizard. He did some of the plays that he
- 19:07has made over the length of his career.
- 19:09Just you don't see that. How much retooling needs to be
- 19:12done? Oh, a lot.
- 19:13You think so? With the Chiefs, you got to
- 19:17start with the tight end, don't you?
- 19:18I mean, just Kelsey, just can he come back?
- 19:21I think he can. You saw late in that game before
- 19:24the entry, what were they doing? Trying to find him.
- 19:26They were going to Kelsey. I don't know what that says
- 19:29about the rest of them. They need a running back.
- 19:31Yes, they need a. Healthy.
- 19:33Offensive. You've got Creed Humphrey and
- 19:35Trey Smith. You start with those two and
- 19:38then you kind of do what the Bears do did this past
- 19:40offseason, right? You retool the old line.
- 19:43See, I look at the squad, they are 7th in total offense, 6th in
- 19:48total defense. There's one change.
- 19:51They didn't win the close games. That's it.
- 19:54I don't think this is 1 where you want to throw the baby out
- 19:55with the bathwater. You have to, yes, retooling,
- 19:59absolutely. But including plea tear down.
- 20:01Now what? We don't know.
- 20:02Is how healthy he's going to be once the calendar hits September
- 20:04Mahomes. That part of it.
- 20:06Andy Reid. Oh yeah.
- 20:08Does he want to go through a retooling process?
- 20:11Does that mean? Well, we heard this year was the
- 20:13one last ride for them all, remember?
- 20:15Got beaten, the Super Bowl, got embarrassed.
- 20:17We're going to run it back one more time.
- 20:18This is a hungry group, like you see it in their eyes.
- 20:22Well, the three weeks left in the season, they're out.
- 20:24Veach is incredible with what they do in the salary.
- 20:26He's great. And the way that they manipulate
- 20:28it and make it work and changes that they make and how they do
- 20:31it, I don't know. No, not a math guy like that,
- 20:33but they do an incredible job. But to do that on the fly, if
- 20:37Reed walks away, who does he want to be that head coach?
- 20:41He wants. He wants naggy and how.
- 20:44Did that work, Trent? You tell us.
- 20:46I could tell you very well he sucks.
- 20:49Good luck to you if that's the guy that's going to be running
- 20:51your organization, going to be the top of the heap.
- 20:54But there's people, there's Chiefs fans everywhere that want
- 20:57him gone. Is that going to happen?
- 20:59Is Andrew Reid at this point in his career going to fire Matt
- 21:02Nagy and bring in a new OC? No.
- 21:04How old? How old did we Did we look last
- 21:07week? Is he 66?
- 21:08Andy Reid. Sounds about right, yeah.
- 21:10Andy Reid, football coach. He's 67.
- 21:13Yep, we'll turn 68 and. Before the season starts, he'll
- 21:16be 68 years old. What's he got left to proof?
- 21:21Nothing. Nothing.
- 21:22No. He's been Hall of Famer.
- 21:24Yeah. And then it turns into, well,
- 21:27who does Mahomes want? As he said.
- 21:29Because he's going to have a lot of say.
- 21:31When is Mahomes return? How quickly is he going to be
- 21:33out there? Is it a best case scenario?
- 21:35We'll see him at beginning of October.
- 21:37Well, how do you get through those first four weeks?
- 21:39You take yourself A1 in three hole and digging out of it again
- 21:42next season. Denver's not going anywhere.
- 21:44I don't think so. Chargers going to be more
- 21:45healthy and they got a head coach.
- 21:47They'll get their offensive. Line of weird ducks.
- 21:50You know, there's a team out there in the AFC that we don't.
- 21:53We never talk about them because nobody cares about them in our
- 21:57market. But are the Jacksonville
- 22:00Jaguars, are they legitimately A legitimate threat to, I mean,
- 22:07someone's going to win this conference And I got to think
- 22:10that. Are the Bills favored here this
- 22:12morning to win the conference? I would think that they are.
- 22:15I would think that they are because they had the best
- 22:18quarterback out of the group. They have a number one.
- 22:22And if I gave you $100 free roll right now, who'd you take in the
- 22:24AFC? The Bills take the Bills.
- 22:27So they're the second choice. I'm looking at DraftKings right
- 22:30now. Denver's 3 to 1, Buffalo's 3 1/2
- 22:32to 1, Houston's 5 1/2 to one, the Patriots 6 to 1.
- 22:35And there's the Jaguars at 6 1/2 to one.
- 22:37Are we missing? Denver hosts Jacksonville this
- 22:40week. This is a this is a big game.
- 22:43It's a big game. Jacksonville's got still got a
- 22:45chance, I think, to what to get the one seed, as strange as that
- 22:48sounds. Because they're 10 and 4.
- 22:50Four and four, yes, they go 13 and 4.
- 22:53Need some help, Sure need. But they'd have a tiebreaker
- 22:56against the Broncos. Don't know how I'd look with
- 22:58them and the Patriots, who I think are gonna probably get to
- 23:00that mark at minimum and maybe do more.
- 23:03Trevor Lawrence is playing better.
- 23:05Yeah, here's their losses this year.
- 23:08They lost to the Bengals with Joe Burrell.
- 23:12They lost to the Seahawks, and they lost to the Rams and the
- 23:14Texans. Playoff, playoff, playoff.
- 23:18It's pretty big, pretty good. Three really good.
- 23:20Teams. Now here's the other side who
- 23:22they beat. They beat.
- 23:24Well, they beat the Texans before the Texans turned in what
- 23:26they are They went to San Francisco.
- 23:28That was a nice win. They beat the Chiefs on that
- 23:30Monday night game. But then there's a lot of
- 23:32garbage. Raiders beat the charge, blew
- 23:35out the Chargers one at the Cardinals, beat the Titans, beat
- 23:39the Colts, beat The Jets. Hasn't been a whole lot of
- 23:41depth, but they're doing what normally Jacksonville doesn't
- 23:44do. Beat who you're supposed to.
- 23:46Keep your head above water. Is the representative going to
- 23:50come out of the AFC S? Is that what you're telling me?
- 23:52I mean, I'm telling you there's a chance.
- 23:54Houston or Jacksonville? I'm telling you it's.
- 23:57Not over. It's not.
- 23:59And Houston, are they done with Jacksonville?
- 24:01Yeah, they must be. You said there's a winner and a
- 24:03loss there. All right. 1225.
- 24:05Scott Dockerman coming up next. By the way, not that it.
- 24:08I voted Heisman. I went Mendoza 1, Pavia 2,
- 24:14Rodriguez, the linebacker from Texas Tech.
- 24:16Three, I had a feeling that's the way.
- 24:18Did they get it right? I think so.
- 24:21I mean, I'm glad that the way it turned out, not that it would
- 24:23have influenced my vote if Pavi would have done one of these
- 24:28things ahead of time. I just, yes, it's Vanderbilt,
- 24:33but it hasn't been too long since yes, Indiana.
- 24:35Right. Absolutely.
- 24:36Yeah, so. Both of these teams trajectories
- 24:39way up than what we're normally accustomed to.
- 24:42So I went Mendoza one on the not not just based on the past at
- 24:45the end of the game at the end of the Big 10 championship, him
- 24:48one, Pavia 2 and then Jacob Rodriguez 3.
- 24:51Scott document next. Miller and Condon under way on a
- 24:54Monday. Glad you're with us.
- 24:56Our number two Bill Seals on Iowa State.
- 24:59Nick Athan. What's next for the Chiefs?
- 25:01Chief splits.com is the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:14I'm Milary Condon, welcome back just past 1230 on a Monday.
- 25:18It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever you're
- 25:20listening. Glad that you are with us.
- 25:22I just, I called you in the break, man.
- 25:23An excellent point. The Chiefs will get the 3rd
- 25:25place schedule next year. Is that 2 games or?
- 25:292, I believe, but certainly as opposed to those being first
- 25:33place schedule, you'd much rather have that and they'll do
- 25:36something and they haven't done in over a decade and that's
- 25:39draft maybe as high as the top ten depending on how these next
- 25:42three weeks go. Scott Document at one time
- 25:45covered that franchise. He's now writing for The
- 25:47Athletic, mostly college football, but he joins us.
- 25:50Hello Doc, how are you? I'm doing well guys.
- 25:53How's your Monday? Doing OK.
- 25:55You covered the Chiefs back in the day before they became the
- 25:58Chiefs in a lot of ways, did you not?
- 26:01I did 2000 through 2006, the Dick Vermeil era.
- 26:04So I got to see a high flying offense, a little different than
- 26:08those high flying offense, but you know, Priest Holmes, Tony
- 26:12Gonzalez, Dante Hall. I I've said Kate and Regent kind
- 26:16of reminds me of Dante Hall and and a couple of Hall of Fame
- 26:20offensive lineman and Trent Green was a decent quarterback.
- 26:23So they had a really bad defense though, and that's what kept
- 26:26them from going to the Super. Bowl What was What was Vermeil
- 26:29like? Fantastic was he I was good of a
- 26:33good of a guy, genuinely personable person, easy to get
- 26:38along with. You know, there are some
- 26:40qualities that that he and Kirk have, I think because I think
- 26:44they genuinely care about people and you know, they're they're
- 26:48very intense and and Vermeil is always known for his crying.
- 26:51But I tell you what he was, I heard him guess a lot more than
- 26:54I heard him saw him cry, you know, you know, which is pretty
- 26:57typical. But but he did genuinely love
- 26:59people. I think that came through time
- 27:02after time after time. We go from a defense that's been
- 27:06very good throughout the years and that is Iowa.
- 27:08They get the Heisman runner up Diego Pavia, Ken mentioned.
- 27:11It didn't even cross my thought process.
- 27:13I think there's going to be a lot of people across the country
- 27:15are going to be maybe rooting a little bit more for the Hawkeyes
- 27:17in this one after his exploits in New York here the last couple
- 27:21of days in comparison to baby that beforehand.
- 27:24Take us in a little bit. The Heisman, Ken talked about
- 27:26his voting, what you saw and Mendoza getting it.
- 27:29But Pavia becoming a Public Enemy number one for a lot of
- 27:32people. I I joked earlier that there's a
- 27:36budding bromance between Indiana and Iowa after this and, you
- 27:40know, after what Pavia did and social media and out of clubbing
- 27:45and what have you and, you know, and, and so, you know, Indiana
- 27:49fans are like, hey, we've got your back.
- 27:51And so it's and then I think a lot of other fans jumped in too.
- 27:55Yeah, he's, he's Public Enemy number one, no question about
- 27:57it. And I think, you know, being
- 27:59from the SEC that's got, you know, kind of an it factor to it
- 28:03anyway. And then throw on his antics
- 28:05over the years and and this year it's going to be added.
- 28:08But but he's also, you know, let's not forget that he is a
- 28:11terrific football player. And if he was on your team, you
- 28:13would be rooting for him like nobody's business.
- 28:16It's just you don't like him because he's he's on the other
- 28:20team, no matter which team. So I voted for Fernando Mendoza
- 28:23#1 I actually got it right for the first.
- 28:26Time. Yeah, when I went 123 with Pavia
- 28:292 and Jeremiah Love 3 and and I kind of went into that Big 10
- 28:33championship game thinking I'll probably vote quarterback either
- 28:38one as as #1 and and you know, Mendoza, the way he was able to,
- 28:45you know, not only throw the the touchdown to Elijah Sarat to put
- 28:49him ahead, but but also connect with Charlie Becker late on a
- 28:52big third down. You know, you can't just base it
- 28:55all on statistics and too many people do that.
- 28:58It's like, well, he didn't throw this many touch.
- 29:00I don't care. I mean, you got to engineer
- 29:02victory. You you've got to score points
- 29:04when they matter and, and win games on the road because NFL,
- 29:08that's what it's about too. And, and I think that's that he
- 29:11proved that time after time, you know, at Iowa, at Oregon, at
- 29:14Penn State, against Ohio State, he tipped the field that this
- 29:19team's a better team because of him.
- 29:21And I thought he definitely deserved it.
- 29:23And Love was great. And it was really kind of a toss
- 29:25up. It's for me #3 between Jeremiah
- 29:28Love and Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State, who I think's the
- 29:32best player in the sport. He just didn't have the the
- 29:34statistics to kind of go there. Yeah, I was the same as you.
- 29:38And 1:00 and 2:00. Yeah, three.
- 29:41I went Jacob Rodriguez, the linebacker from Texas Tech with
- 29:44my third place vote. Anyways, Doc, there is a little
- 29:47breaking news before we kind of get to these games coming up
- 29:49this weekend. Nebraska quarterback Dylan
- 29:51Rayola, intense. He's in the portal.
- 29:54He's looking for a place where he can thrive and best harnesses
- 29:57potential. Didn't he say that when he got
- 29:59to Nebraska? Well, he's in the portal.
- 30:02Doc, is that a surprise to you or kind of writing on the wall
- 30:05when brother left and then uncle was fired?
- 30:09Yeah, I think it was writing on the wall.
- 30:11I mean, you just kind of, you know, read between the lines on
- 30:14this one that, you know, when his uncle's fired, his brother
- 30:17decides to commit, the season wasn't going great for him and
- 30:21he gets hurt. And it was kind of like, you
- 30:24know, I I'd be surprised if he stayed, you know, and I mean, I
- 30:27guess money talks. But now that he's expected to
- 30:31enter the transfer portal, it's it's not a surprise at all.
- 30:34And and you know that I think it it's really a double.
- 30:38It's a really a whammy for for Nebraska because they put a lot
- 30:41into him. I mean his five star, you know,
- 30:44he made him the face of the organization.
- 30:45The fans really rallied and pounded and and to now have him,
- 30:49they're starting over again with him at that position.
- 30:53I think Latif was it had flashed some moments this year, but he
- 30:57didn't play very well in the final two games.
- 30:59He was true freshman. That happens.
- 31:00But I, I think, you know, Nebraska is kind of an identity
- 31:05crisis as an organization. You know, they just, you don't
- 31:08know what are they trying to do and how and are they going to be
- 31:11good at anything? And they've never shown that
- 31:13they can be. So I, I think that, you know,
- 31:15this, you know, now you get a chance to kind of build it from
- 31:18the ground up if you want to do that.
- 31:20But, you know, it's still a really big punch for
- 31:24organization that could use some stability and some confidence.
- 31:29Speaking of stability, not a whole lot of it in the Ann Arbor
- 31:31right now and they try to figure out who their next head coach is
- 31:35going to be A crazy afternoon into evening A week ago, Doc,
- 31:41one of the more wild stories that certainly I could remember.
- 31:44In a sport that is full of wild stories, where does Michigan
- 31:48turn and how big is a concern? National championship just a
- 31:52couple of years ago, this program, the money that needs to
- 31:55be spent, they went out, got Underwood.
- 31:56Is he going to be back for a sophomore year?
- 31:58A lot of questions there take us into Michigan.
- 32:01Yeah, it's really been kind of a a meat grinder for a while now.
- 32:05I mean, really, you know, Jim Harbaugh, you know, obviously
- 32:08brought a lot of success, you know, three straight Big 10
- 32:11championships, national championship, really turned the
- 32:14program from, you know, bad mediocrity and and turning it.
- 32:19But he also brought like just a baggage piled up over and over.
- 32:24I mean, NCAA stuff, you know, Connor Stallions and, and then,
- 32:30you know, then this stuff and then he, we got this with Shrone
- 32:33Moore and, and, you know, and we see, you know, we can't forget
- 32:36about the, the private equity stuff that they're ready to
- 32:39leave the Big 10 over. And, and it just seems to me
- 32:42this, this the whole thing needs a reset too.
- 32:44And I think you kind of need to get away from the, the Harbaugh
- 32:47era and, and, and shadow and I think, you know, now this is
- 32:53completely different and this is gross and it's unseemly and you
- 32:58hate seeing it. There's not a winner out of this
- 33:00whole mix, but I, if I were them you, you've got to just get
- 33:04somebody who's gonna be stable and for, you know, be a, a good
- 33:10force and, and internally and, and you know, Sharon Moore, I, I
- 33:15think they felt obligated to have to promote him because he
- 33:18did win some games as a interim coach.
- 33:21But I don't think anybody was looking at him over the last two
- 33:23years, even with as much dysfunction there and saying,
- 33:26man, this guy's going to bring it next year.
- 33:28I mean, Bryce Underwood's a good quarterback, but I didn't see
- 33:32much growth there. So I, I think, you know, they're
- 33:35probably like, Dang, why didn't this happen a week earlier?
- 33:37Maybe they could have got Matt Campbell.
- 33:39I think Jed Fish might be the guy that I would put it the top
- 33:43of the list from Washington. Dillingham on your list, do you
- 33:46think? What about the board in Alabama?
- 33:48Those two names make any sense? Stock maybe underneath.
- 33:52The board backed out, did he said.
- 33:54I'm not yesterday. He's like, I'm not going
- 33:56anywhere, so don't even look that way.
- 33:57And I and I think our guy in Arizona reported that Kenny
- 34:01Dillingham was working on an extension there at Arizona
- 34:04State. So I don't I don't know that
- 34:07that would be a reasonable option for them at this point.
- 34:10But, you know, and maybe it's it's somebody.
- 34:13And this is where we all get enamored with the big name at
- 34:16the big time. And, and we've seen a couple of
- 34:19different situations. I mean, you know, let's look at
- 34:23Kurt Signetti getting hired, you know, a guy in his 60s, they,
- 34:27you know, Indiana decided he was the right coach and man, that
- 34:30really took off. And, and even going back two
- 34:32decades, I mean, who would have thought that Ohio State would
- 34:35have hired the Youngstown State coach?
- 34:36Yeah, really be that guy. And and he let him do a national
- 34:40title, a couple national title appearances.
- 34:42So the cardigan sweaters. Yeah.
- 34:45I mean, maybe somebody like Jeff Munkin is, is a guy that you
- 34:48look at, you know, from Army, you know, and I don't think they
- 34:50will, but but you know, the leadership that he's shown in a
- 34:54program that you're, you've got a really low ceiling.
- 34:58And as long as he's not, you know, bringing back the
- 35:00wishbone, which I, I don't think he would.
- 35:03But you know, I, I think that's, you need somebody with that kind
- 35:07of leadership at this point, I think.
- 35:09So we go into the weekend. Of course Friday night begins
- 35:12with a all timer Alabama Oklahoma helmet game.
- 35:15No doubt Miami Texas A&M will get us started Saturday.
- 35:18I do want to go to the two games involving the group of Five.
- 35:22Most people don't give any shot to either Tulane or James
- 35:25Madison to even hang around into the second-half.
- 35:28Of those two, who would you point to that you think has a
- 35:30chance to make it a competitive game?
- 35:32Keep us interested, at least for a while.
- 35:36You know, even though they played before, I would probably
- 35:38go Tulane, Ole Miss, you know, because I think Tulane does have
- 35:42some some qualities that can keep it competitive.
- 35:45And and with all the turmoil that Ole Miss has gone through
- 35:48now with Keith Goulding as their head coach, I mean, you know,
- 35:52what happens if things don't work out Well, I mean, Lane had
- 35:55they had the offense figured out and I just don't know.
- 35:58You know, you got a kind of this hodgepodge of assistant coaches
- 36:02halfway on their way out and, and you know, what if the
- 36:07offense, they have a couple turnovers early and Tulane's in
- 36:09it and then they're trying to figure things out and it just
- 36:12doesn't work well for them. So that's probably the one I
- 36:14would go with. I I really struggle to think
- 36:17that James Madison's going to mount much of a challenge to
- 36:20Oregon going all the way across the country.
- 36:22There's a humongous talent disparity.
- 36:24I mean, I just I think that one has blow out written all over it
- 36:29in my eyes. But but you know things stranger
- 36:32things have happened. But they this would be in rare
- 36:35air for stranger things. I'll get you out of here on this
- 36:37doc Yeah, by the way, that's a 22.21 and a half 22 now Oregon's
- 36:42favorite over James Madison Friday night Trent mentioned in
- 36:45Alabama Oklahoma and then the early game on Saturday Miami
- 36:49versus Texas A and MI did personally I didn't like the way
- 36:52A&M finished the season. Wasn't real sure that this was a
- 36:55team that that deserve to be. I know that they were unbeaten
- 36:58to till the better end, but your thoughts on those two Doc?
- 37:02Do you have an opinion either way on Alabama, Oklahoma, Miami,
- 37:06Texas A&M? Yeah, of the four, this sounds
- 37:10space, sounds strange. I think Miami is the best team
- 37:12out of the four. And if you would have put Notre
- 37:15Dame in there, I was on Notre Dame.
- 37:17Yeah, of four or five. I think, you know, Oklahoma is a
- 37:22really good defense and marginal and offense.
- 37:25Alabama can't run. So I guess I kind of like
- 37:29Alabama a little bit more. I think, you know, if Ty Simpson
- 37:32can play the way he was playing earlier this season and not the
- 37:35way he played November, Miami, I, I like Miami on the road.
- 37:39I, I think Carson Beck and you know, I mean, Marcel Reed is
- 37:42tremendous. No question.
- 37:43They've got a lot of talent and it's going to be a Kyle Field.
- 37:46So you know, it's going to be crazy, but I don't know.
- 37:49I, I, I think they got a shot here and you know, but I, I
- 37:52think whoever wins is not going to have much of a chance when
- 37:55they go to the, to the Cotton Bowl and play Ohio State.
- 37:59And I don't. I think Ohio State's clearly
- 38:00better than both of them. And that is New Year's Eve, is
- 38:03it not? I believe it is.
- 38:05Yeah. Good stuff Scott Dockerman from
- 38:07The Athletic Dock. What have you got coming up this
- 38:09week that Trent and I as subscribers will both be able to
- 38:12click on and read? Yeah, I'm working on a couple of
- 38:16stories. One is Indiana, like how insane
- 38:19it is that Indiana is in this position and looking at their
- 38:23kind of their history, but also what Signeti has been able to do
- 38:27to put them in position to be the number one team in the
- 38:29country, which they are. And I'm also going to take like
- 38:31an all 22 look or, you know, for the 22 best players entering the
- 38:36the playoffs. And and I'm gonna take a gander
- 38:39at the at, you know, maybe an idea for the big 10.
- 38:44You know, instead of going to this extra round of 123645 that
- 38:49they want to so badly, why not revisit the Champions Week
- 38:53thoughts of 2020 when you have to take like one week of
- 38:57crossover and just play it as the last game of the season?
- 39:01You know, OK, you can have one versus 2, but but maybe it's 3
- 39:04versus 6 and 3 or 4 versus 8 or something like that.
- 39:08Teams that haven't played each other play them on home
- 39:10campuses. That's something that I think
- 39:13the Big 10 should look at. So I'm trying to write that this
- 39:16week too. Good stuff, Doc.
- 39:17We'll look forward to it. Thank you, Scott Docman,
- 39:19appreciate you coming on. As always, you do the same.
- 39:23Thank you, Scott Dockerman from the Athletic Trench.
- 39:26I think you're too enthusiastic. Thumbs up from you, right?
- 39:29I've been. Harping that since 21, yeah.
- 39:32Brandon Sorsby, Cincinnati quarterback in the portal.
- 39:36Gonna be quarterbacks. So if you're who's their
- 39:39opponent, Navy or army in their bowl game?
- 39:42Don't remember off the top man. Better get to your app quickly.
- 39:46Miller and Condon on this Navy on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 39:48Network. Hi, Millie Condon, welcome back.
- 39:57Iowa Sports Radio Network. Coming up on our number two,
- 40:00Bill Seals will join us. Iowa State's replace Ryan
- 40:04Clanton got a guy from the SEC, Auburn old miss on his resume.
- 40:08Pretty good. Yeah, sounds a thing.
- 40:10So we will talk to Bill about that.
- 40:12Comings and goings with that roster, what Bill is hearing if
- 40:16anything. Obviously do some basketball.
- 40:18Both men's and women's with Bill when he joins us kick off our
- 40:22number two. I still that last week, the Cy
- 40:24Hawk, the women and men both such both really, really good
- 40:27games. They really were that that one's
- 40:30gonna you know, 2025 when you stack them both beside each
- 40:34other. Just the fact, you know, 1
- 40:36wasn't a good game, one wasn't a blowout.
- 40:38They were both really good games.
- 40:39Especially if both of them, all four of them, have successful
- 40:42seasons. Yep, of the four most likely to
- 40:45miss the tournament. I will, men.
- 40:47Yeah, I agree. I agree.
- 40:49Who's the most likely to make a final 40?
- 40:57Iowa State men. Iowa State men?
- 40:59Yep. Is that how you see it?
- 41:01I think so. I think so too.
- 41:03Do you really like Yukon for the women?
- 41:05Oh yeah, that's is that a free? Square, I mean, they're minus
- 41:09money to win a national team already.
- 41:10Yes. Like -180.
- 41:12Yes, look, today I started adding them to some of my
- 41:16futures. But we thought we had a free
- 41:18square a couple years back and Caitlin Clark had different
- 41:20ideas for the South Carolina ladies.
- 41:22She did our 2 is Next Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:25Network.
