- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Thursday, it is the
- 0:1612th of October and I'm so grateful that you have joined
- 0:21me. Invited me into your day so that
- 0:23we can continue injecting God's Word into our lives where it can
- 0:30give us the rhythm of God's Kingdom as we go about our days
- 0:34and today's reading. Oh dear poor old Paul.
- 0:37He just gets pushed from one place to the other to the other
- 0:41until he finds himself in one of the great centers of the ancient
- 0:44world where God breaks his heart for his people.
- 0:48So let's read this wonderful story written in Acts chapter
- 0:5217. Paul and Silas then traveled
- 1:05through the towns of Amphilippis and Apollonia and came to
- 1:08Thessalonica where there was a Jewish synagogue.
- 1:12As was Paul's custom, he went to the synagogue service and for
- 1:16three Sabbaths in a row, he used the scriptures to reason with
- 1:19the people. He explained the prophecies and
- 1:22proved that the Messiah must suffer and rise from the dead.
- 1:26He said, This Jesus I'm telling you about is the Messiah.
- 1:31Some of the Jews who listened were persuaded and joined Paul
- 1:34and Silas, along with many God fearing Greek men and quite a
- 1:38few prominent women. But some of the Jews were
- 1:41jealous, so they gathered some troublemakers from the
- 1:44marketplace to form a mob and start a riot.
- 1:47They attacked the home of Jason, searching for Paul and Silas so
- 1:51they could drag them out to the crowd.
- 1:54Not finding them there, they dragged out Jason and some of
- 1:57the other believers instead, and took them before the City
- 2:00Council. Paul and Silas have caused
- 2:04trouble all over the world. They shouted, and now they're
- 2:08here, disturbing our city too, and Jason has welcomed them into
- 2:13his home. They are all guilty of treason
- 2:16against Caesar, for they profess allegiance to another king named
- 2:21Jesus. The people of the city, as well
- 2:24as the City Council, were thrown into turmoil by these reports.
- 2:29So the officials forced Jason and the other believers to post
- 2:32bond, and then they released them.
- 2:36That very night, the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea.
- 2:40When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue,
- 2:44and the people of Berea were more openminded than those in
- 2:47Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message.
- 2:51They searched the scriptures day after day to see if Paul and
- 2:55Silas were teaching the truth. As a result, many Jews believed,
- 3:00as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.
- 3:03But when some Jews and Thessalonika learnt that Paul
- 3:06was preaching the word of God and Berea, they went there and
- 3:10stirred up trouble. The believers acted at once,
- 3:14sending Paul onto the coast while Silas and Timothy remained
- 3:17behind. Those escorting Paul went with
- 3:20him all the way to Athens. Then they returned to Berea with
- 3:24instructions for Silas and Timothy to hurry and join him
- 3:29while Paul was waiting for them. In Athens he was deeply troubled
- 3:33by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city.
- 3:37He went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews and the God
- 3:40fearing Gentiles, and he spoke daily in the public square to
- 3:43all who happened to be there. He also had a debate with some
- 3:47of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers.
- 3:51When he told them about Jesus and his resurrection, they said,
- 3:55What's this babbler trying to say with these strange ideas
- 3:58he's picked up? Others said he seems to be
- 4:03preaching about some foreign gods.
- 4:06Then they took him to the high council of the city.
- 4:09Come and tell us about this new teaching, they said.
- 4:13You are saying some rather strange things, and we want to
- 4:16know what it's all about. It should be explained that all
- 4:20the Athenians, as well as the foreigners and Athens seem to
- 4:23spend all their time discussing the latest ideas.
- 4:28So Paul, standing before the council, address them as
- 4:31follows. Men of Athens, I noticed that
- 4:35you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along
- 4:40I saw your many shrines, and one of your altars had this
- 4:45inscription on it to an unknown God.
- 4:50This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I'm
- 4:53telling you about. He is the God who made the world
- 4:57and everything in it. Since he is the Lord of heaven
- 5:01and earth, he doesn't live in manmade temples, and human hands
- 5:05can't serve his needs, for he has no needs.
- 5:09He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies
- 5:14every need from one man. He created all the nations
- 5:19throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they
- 5:23should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.
- 5:27His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps
- 5:31feel their way toward him and find him, though he is not far
- 5:35from any one of us. For in him we live and move and
- 5:41exist. As some of your own poets have
- 5:44said, we are his offspring, and since that is true, we shouldn't
- 5:49think of God as an idol designed by Craftsman from gold or silver
- 5:53or stone. God overlooked people's
- 5:57ignorance about these things in earlier times.
- 6:00But now He commands everyone everywhere to repent of their
- 6:04sins and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging
- 6:10the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he
- 6:14proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.
- 6:20When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead,
- 6:23some laughed in contempt, but others said we want to hear more
- 6:28about this. Later.
- 6:30That ended Paul's discussion with them, but some joined him
- 6:33and became believers. Among them were Dionysus, a
- 6:38member of the council, a woman named Demarius, and others with
- 6:42them. Jesus, in you we live and move
- 6:57and exist. You are never far from anyone of
- 7:02us. Thank you that our whole life,
- 7:07our whole being is so intimately wrapped up in you and your love
- 7:15for us, your forgiveness of us, and the identity that we have as
- 7:20your loved and forgiven children.
- 7:26Thank you that you truly are the God of the universe who did make
- 7:31the heaven and the earth, and who loves us nonetheless.
- 7:36We thank you that you hear our prayers and you bend your ear to
- 7:41know what it is that's going on for us.
- 7:44It boggles our mind, but that's what your word says.
- 7:48So we claim it and we thank you for it.
- 7:52And it's in your wonderful name that we pray Jesus.
- 7:55Amen.
