Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The youngest MVP and NBA history, a Chicago legend who
- 0:04Speaker 1: changed the game forever. He's trading the hardwood for red clay.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Let me get some noise for Derek ROMs. Everybody. According
- 0:15Speaker 1: to my really in depth sources, this is not your
- 0:18Speaker 1: first time here at Rolling No.
- 0:20Speaker 2: This is my second time, and the first time, of course,
- 0:22Speaker 2: was with Joe Kim Noah and his family. They blessed
- 0:25Speaker 2: us and honored it. He was honored to be a
- 0:27Speaker 2: part of the experience and coming in this time with
- 0:29Speaker 2: my partners. We made the choice to come here and
- 0:32Speaker 2: decided to be with you great guys, So thanks for
- 0:34Speaker 2: having us.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We appreciate you, brother, we do.
- 0:36Speaker 2: You started playing tennis at an early age.
- 0:38Speaker 3: How did you get into the sport?
- 0:40Speaker 2: No, I played a little bit.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Okay, I heard you were sitting Come on, give up
- 0:47Speaker 3: on a note. We have no proof to verify that,
- 0:50Speaker 3: so you can hype it up.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Not to be pompous. I want a trophy, wow, But seriously,
- 0:57Speaker 2: I played a little bit. They brought the program to
- 0:59Speaker 2: my school when I was in sixth grade. I played
- 1:01Speaker 2: a little bit. We played that the auto show downtown
- 1:04Speaker 2: where the McCormick Place Downtown Chicago. We played there, played
- 1:07Speaker 2: in a few tournaments there, and we won the trophy.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Then after that they took that program away from my school,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and my dreams was right wiped away right from there.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So I still love the sport. I love how the
- 1:19Speaker 2: game is played, and I'm always intrigued whenever I see it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Derek, you said, this is your second time here.
- 1:25Speaker 2: You played when you were younger.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I want to get a feel for, like, do you
- 1:28Speaker 1: watch tennis during the years or you just pay attention
- 1:30Speaker 1: to the majors? Do you know just a handful of players?
- 1:33Speaker 3: You know every one of the top hundred.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I wouldn't say the top hundred, but I'll watch whenever
- 1:36Speaker 2: I can. Me and my family watch a lot. I
- 1:38Speaker 2: love Alcaraz, Alcaraz that just started. I love how young
- 1:43Speaker 2: I kind of can relate to him being you.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I said to the break, I
- 1:47Speaker 1: feel like Alcaraz is the Derek Rose like a ton
- 1:50Speaker 1: of success, early, super athletic, explosive. You see yourself in them,
- 1:55Speaker 1: play both.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Sides of the ball. Of how he plays defense always
- 1:59Speaker 2: goes for the ball, in which in tennis some balls
- 2:01Speaker 2: you shouldn't go after because you shouldn't waste that energy.
- 2:04Speaker 2: But I love the attempt sometimes and he's always there.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I love his foot speed, I love his pi, everything
- 2:13Speaker 2: about him, his heart and he always fights. I love
- 2:16Speaker 2: Tiafo too. I'm a U. I'm from the US, So
- 2:19Speaker 2: I got to say tiafoa missed his game earlier, but
- 2:21Speaker 2: keep your head up to Yafo.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It's a huge moment for American tennis right now. Usually
- 2:26Speaker 3: during Roland garrels, we don't do as well, but I
- 2:28Speaker 3: want to talk. We had Novak joke bitch out here
- 2:31Speaker 3: and he talked about his injury and the mentality. I
- 2:33Speaker 3: think mentality across the board in all sports is really
- 2:36Speaker 3: important and for everyone to kind of just get that
- 2:38Speaker 3: little bit of tidbit.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And Novak talked.
- 2:40Speaker 3: About Kobe reaching out to him and how that really
- 2:44Speaker 3: helped him. And I know you went through your own
- 2:46Speaker 3: battle of injuries. Was there anyone special that reached out
- 2:48Speaker 3: to you that just mentally just made you lock in
- 2:51Speaker 3: that little bit when you had your doubts?
- 2:53Speaker 2: Uh No. At that time, I was going through a
- 2:56Speaker 2: dark time, you know. I was finding out who who
- 3:00Speaker 2: I was as a person. I was learning self identity,
- 3:02Speaker 2: self knowledge, and self revelation. Those three keys put me
- 3:06Speaker 2: on my journey to ruin my hair, meet my wife,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and creating my partners that I have now. And I
- 3:12Speaker 2: don't want to break something that's already. It's working for
- 3:16Speaker 2: me right now, so I'm gonna stick to it. Or
- 3:18Speaker 2: when I did, when I was going through my adversity,
- 3:20Speaker 2: I stuck to it. I really learned who I was
- 3:22Speaker 2: as a person. I learned with what I can deal
- 3:25Speaker 2: with while I couldn't deal with my flaws the good, bad,
- 3:28Speaker 2: and ugly. And that's why I try to tell the
- 3:30Speaker 2: younger guys, no matter what sports you're playing, you got
- 3:32Speaker 2: to be able to go through all the three levels, good,
- 3:34Speaker 2: the bad, and the ugly. The ugly can be surgery, adversity,
- 3:38Speaker 2: whatever it is. Death in the family is something. The
- 3:41Speaker 2: bad can be, you know, getting traded, et cetera. The good.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Everybody can get through the good. But if you can
- 3:46Speaker 2: get through those three levels and stay away from being neurotic,
- 3:51Speaker 2: you should be good.
- 3:52Speaker 3: And I want them to go talk to Francis right now,
- 3:55Speaker 3: just hype them up.
- 3:57Speaker 1: The American success that happened here was in the nineties, yes, sir,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and I can imagine there was a lot of Chicago
- 4:04Speaker 1: Bulls jerseys. Even here in the nineties, there have been
- 4:08Speaker 1: five Bulls jerseys retired. Yes, sir, you're getting your jersey
- 4:12Speaker 1: retired by the Chicago Bulls next season. Yes, it's gonna
- 4:15Speaker 1: be up there with Michael frickin Jordan. What does it
- 4:18Speaker 1: mean for you to have that jersey lifted in a
- 4:20Speaker 1: place where, twenty two years old, you're the MVP and
- 4:23Speaker 1: you brought so much life to that city.
- 4:25Speaker 2: It's gonna be an honor. But at the same time,
- 4:27Speaker 2: it's not me that's receiving this award or receiving that
- 4:32Speaker 2: the day or the experience. It's everybody, my teammates, the city,
- 4:37Speaker 2: my teammates from Grammar school, high school, the Chicago area.
- 4:41Speaker 2: They seen me play ever since I was in sixth
- 4:43Speaker 2: grade and held me to a certain level and expectation
- 4:47Speaker 2: ever since I was that young. We in Chicago we
- 4:50Speaker 2: call that tough love, but I was used to it,
- 4:52Speaker 2: and they held me play at a certain level because
- 4:55Speaker 2: I wanted to prove to the city and everybody that
- 4:59Speaker 2: I was able to to get through chase my dreams.
- 5:02Speaker 2: At the same time stay balanced and stay true to
- 5:04Speaker 2: myself in the Chicago way and thank god I did that.
- 5:08Speaker 2: So that day is not just for me. It's for
- 5:10Speaker 2: everybody that watched me play, every kid that rushed home
- 5:14Speaker 2: at seven o'clock to try to get in front of
- 5:17Speaker 2: a TV. Whatever it was you do that gather step
- 5:20Speaker 2: and just yam On, You're part of it, man, because
- 5:23Speaker 2: it wasn't just me. I know that it takes a
- 5:25Speaker 2: team to get to where I'm at, and I'm all
- 5:28Speaker 2: about team.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Now.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Is that kind of your next step in life? Because
- 5:31Speaker 3: now being retired and finishing off with the Knicks, your
- 5:35Speaker 3: next step, what does that look like? Are you going
- 5:37Speaker 3: to be reaching out to the younger generation? Are you
- 5:40Speaker 3: going to just keep going on your path and your journey?
- 5:43Speaker 3: What was the next steps look like?
- 5:44Speaker 2: The next step is I'm going to use this.
- 5:46Speaker 3: As a cheat code because I'm now in retirement.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It's really just being myself. Like you were talking about
- 5:51Speaker 2: before the camera came on, about just a passion, my
- 5:53Speaker 2: passion right now on the chess league, right now I
- 5:56Speaker 2: went medics. Carlson, the number one chess league in the
- 5:59Speaker 2: world was like, that's lost. God shout to Magnets. But seriously,
- 6:10Speaker 2: it was a dream. I always dreamed big and I
- 6:12Speaker 2: love my team for always make me think macro, and
- 6:15Speaker 2: whenever I do think uh micro, they always correct me.
- 6:20Speaker 2: But it was a dream of mine to work with them,
- 6:23Speaker 2: and I never thought i'd have a chance to actually
- 6:24Speaker 2: partner with him. So at Chess League we have a
- 6:27Speaker 2: flower shop that I'm opening up in Chicago. Of course
- 6:31Speaker 2: because of my name Derek Rose, it plays off the
- 6:34Speaker 2: name Steve Roses. So it's other verticals that I'm man too.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Once again, I'm not going here to brag or be pompous.
- 6:42Speaker 2: It's other things that I'm I'm gonna prime you about
- 6:45Speaker 2: or later on in the future. But those are two
- 6:47Speaker 2: things that I'm focusing on right now. First, before all
- 6:50Speaker 2: that is at that the reason why I retired was
- 6:53Speaker 2: because I wanted to be in my kids' lives and
- 6:55Speaker 2: give them my undivided I grew up with my father,
- 6:58Speaker 2: so I'm giving them my all and is working right
- 7:01Speaker 2: now because I know that I made the right decision
- 7:04Speaker 2: by the smiles on their faces, the way that they
- 7:07Speaker 2: call their mom, will call my phone whenever I'm not
- 7:10Speaker 2: around because they miss me. I know the importance of
- 7:12Speaker 2: like just being there in their lives as a black,
- 7:14Speaker 2: a black man.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I will say you you came here, you were kind
- 7:18Speaker 1: enough to come to our set. And I think it's
- 7:19Speaker 1: very important that when people are still thriving, you give
- 7:22Speaker 1: them their roses. So if we can please give this
- 7:25Speaker 1: man his roses while he is here, give them his
- 7:27Speaker 1: flowers you were deserving. Oh we need roses, mister Rose
- 7:34Speaker 1: a man right here. Thank you of course. And I
- 7:37Speaker 1: hear that you're going to be micd up. You're going
- 7:38Speaker 1: to be in there watching Carlos al Karaz Tommy Paul.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Is this your first time that you're gonna get to
- 7:43Speaker 1: watch Carlos live live?
- 7:44Speaker 2: Yes, special man, I'll be recording up there. You see
- 7:47Speaker 2: me with my phone.
- 7:48Speaker 3: We want your insight, we want the intel he is.
- 7:51Speaker 1: He's wearing a microphone, so he's we're gonna be recording it.
- 7:54Speaker 1: The thing that because this was my first time going
- 7:56Speaker 1: in there, the thing that's incredible to me. They can
- 7:59Speaker 1: you can hear everything, and he is going to see you,
- 8:02Speaker 1: and it's so special. And I'm telling you you are
- 8:05Speaker 1: going to be able to give him power in this match.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The only problem is he's taking on Tommy Paul the American.
- 8:10Speaker 1: So I don't kind of want you to give too
- 8:11Speaker 1: much power to Carlos south Ras. But how excited are
- 8:15Speaker 1: you to watch that match tonight.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I'm very excited, man, Like I said, the experience being here,
- 8:19Speaker 2: I always like putting myself in an uncomfortable situation, so
- 8:23Speaker 2: I can't get comfortable with him. And this is a
- 8:25Speaker 2: part of the journey right here, coming here, talking to
- 8:27Speaker 2: you all, going in there. I'm an introvert or ambivert
- 8:31Speaker 2: that's in between. So going in places where it's a
- 8:33Speaker 2: lot of people, I tend to have anxiety from that,
- 8:37Speaker 2: but because of the profession I chose tend to like
- 8:40Speaker 2: mask it in a way. But yeah, I'm trying to grow,
- 8:43Speaker 2: make that transformation and I'm loving it.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Well.
- 8:46Speaker 1: If you need help, will be your bodyguards.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Appreciate we got you.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Derek Rose. Thank you so much for joining us. Enjoy
- 8:51Speaker 1: the match. Derek Rose one of the best to ever
- 8:53Speaker 1: do it. We knew he was winning championships as a
- 8:56Speaker 1: tennis player. We're on the road to a championship here
- 8:58Speaker 1: at Roland Garros.
