- 0:00Speaker 1: Back to it. News Radio 570 WKBN and Ron Verp.
- 0:02Speaker 1: So I go back to, let's see, this guy said
- 0:07Speaker 1: the analyst Jeff Curry was being interviewed on CNBC. And
- 0:11Speaker 1: I just want you to hear another portion of this.
- 0:13Speaker 1: So he's talking about you're going to hit oil bottoms. Basically,
- 0:19Speaker 1: we're depleting a lot of our strategic oil reserves to
- 0:22Speaker 1: keep prices artificially low. And whether that's the U.S. or
- 0:27Speaker 1: China and this kind of stuff, and it's it's not,
- 0:31Speaker 1: it's not a good deposition to be in. And then
- 0:33Speaker 1: he said, I just want to play this part where
- 0:35Speaker 1: he's talking. I think about minerals. I just want to
- 0:39Speaker 1: play you this. I get back to your phone calls
- 0:41Speaker 1: and just stuff. I want you to know.
- 0:44Speaker 2: October of last.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Wait a second. I think I screwed that up a
- 0:49Speaker 1: little bit. Let's let me try that again. Let me
- 0:50Speaker 1: try to. All right. Let me see. I got, I got,
- 0:55Speaker 1: I got to get back to this where I want.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I need to go with this guy. And talk about, well,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I get to it. I'm having some Internet issues, obviously. Okay,
- 1:08Speaker 1: let's see here. All right, well, it's not going to function.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'll get it to you later. All right, you're on
- 1:17Speaker 1: the air.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Ron, good afternoon, sir. Yes, sir. I think ultimately, and
- 1:24Speaker 3: I'm not sure I might have even sent you something
- 1:26Speaker 3: about that CNBC thing yesterday, but the problem is you
- 1:30Speaker 3: haven't had oil coming out of the straight. That's 20%
- 1:32Speaker 3: of the world's supply. So if you're one of every
- 1:35Speaker 3: five gallons since pretty much what the middle of March
- 1:39Speaker 3: hasn't left the Gulf, not quite that because I think
- 1:42Speaker 3: Saudi Arabia and UAE are getting some out through pipelines
- 1:45Speaker 3: to go into the Red Sea, but We had oil
- 1:48Speaker 3: was so low before because there was actually overproduction in
- 1:52Speaker 3: the world. There were hundreds of millions of barrels or
- 1:54Speaker 3: tens of millions of barrels sitting on tankers on the
- 1:57Speaker 3: ocean floating, waiting to be bought. That's all gone. The
- 2:01Speaker 3: strategic petroleum reserves in a lot of these countries, Europe,
- 2:05Speaker 3: the U.S., China, are being drawn down. And once again,
- 2:09Speaker 3: if you remember back in 2022, it was Joe Biden
- 2:12Speaker 3: who drew down about half of the strategic petroleum reserve
- 2:16Speaker 3: or more. Just to lower prices. There was no reason
- 2:19Speaker 3: to do it other than, you know, he was trying
- 2:21Speaker 3: to position himself for re-election. So another positive side effect
- 2:27Speaker 3: of having Joe Biden as president is now we're less
- 2:29Speaker 3: prepared than we should be.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Well, and Trump's doing the same thing now, too.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Well, yeah, but now you have a reason to. You know,
- 2:37Speaker 3: the Strategic Petroleum Reserve wasn't put there to just keep
- 2:40Speaker 3: prices low because demand was high or what have you.
- 2:42Speaker 1: See, I don't buy that you have a reason to.
- 2:45Speaker 1: It's really put there for military purposes, to be blunt
- 2:47Speaker 1: with you. That's the purpose of it. It's not there
- 2:50Speaker 1: to manipulate prices or, boy, now you really need to
- 2:52Speaker 1: do it. He's using it to manipulate prices and keep
- 2:55Speaker 1: them low as well. What this guy is saying on
- 2:58Speaker 1: CNBC is these prices are artificially manipulated. They're not... And
- 3:03Speaker 1: it's basically saying, what, July, the crap's going to hit
- 3:08Speaker 1: the fan in the United States.
- 3:11Speaker 4: I mean, I.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Always mispronounce the name Dalio, the financial guy, Schiff. There's
- 3:17Speaker 1: four of them that are talking about 6% inflation in
- 3:23Speaker 1: the second quarter. 6% inflation. I mean, when you take
- 3:30Speaker 1: a look at what's coming... What some of these people
- 3:35Speaker 1: see coming from an energy, the cost of energy, the
- 3:38Speaker 1: inflation that's coming as a result of it, it's a disaster.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Well, I think it's the old, you know, you break it,
- 3:47Speaker 3: you bought it. I think Colin Powell told Bush that
- 3:50Speaker 3: in 2003 when he went into Iraq, and that didn't
- 3:53Speaker 3: turn out so well. And I think Trump went in
- 3:57Speaker 3: with this maybe with rose-colored glasses on, and this war
- 4:01Speaker 3: didn't turn out nearly to be as easy as what
- 4:04Speaker 3: he thought it would be.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Correct.
- 4:06Speaker 3: And none of the rest of the world, it still
- 4:09Speaker 3: baffles me that the Europeans were going to be hurt
- 4:12Speaker 3: by this more than anybody else, other than maybe Japan
- 4:15Speaker 3: and South Korea. Nobody's lifting a finger to try and
- 4:20Speaker 3: solve this problem. It's just all on us.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I don't know that they will.
- 4:26Speaker 3: We've got plenty of oil in our country. What I
- 4:28Speaker 3: don't understand is why we're shipping all our oil over
- 4:31Speaker 3: to Europe.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Well, what they say is that the oil we have
- 4:34Speaker 1: is not conducive to our refineries. I don't know. I'm
- 4:38Speaker 1: learning more about oil than I ever wanted to. It's
- 4:41Speaker 1: not conducive to our— No, I'm.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Talking about what's in the strategic petroleum.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I don't understand any of that, the global
- 4:47Speaker 1: market aspect of it. I don't know.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I just think, and I've said this before, I think
- 4:53Speaker 3: at times like this, you kind of have to put
- 4:55Speaker 3: the brakes on the global market from the United States
- 4:57Speaker 3: standpoint and just say, you know what, we're going to
- 5:00Speaker 3: stop exporting some of our hydrocarbons. That'll drive Frank from
- 5:04Speaker 3: Fort Lauderdale nuts.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Well, the part of, I don't know if it's in
- 5:07Speaker 1: that guy's discussion, but I've been doing so much of it,
- 5:11Speaker 1: is also you're dealing with some of these, not oil,
- 5:16Speaker 1: but Chemicals that you need for copper and other type
- 5:20Speaker 1: of things that you can't get right now because of
- 5:23Speaker 1: the straight being closed.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Helium for chip production. Helium, I guess, is used.
- 5:28Speaker 1: To cool the chips when they're produced. There's many things
- 5:31Speaker 1: like that. I forget what's used in copper, and it's
- 5:34Speaker 1: not available. So you're going to see other things out.
- 5:37Speaker 1: You're going to see production come to a standstill in
- 5:40Speaker 1: places because they won't have the availability to get the...
- 5:47Speaker 1: things that they need.
- 5:48Speaker 3: What bothers me now is the Iranians are, I think,
- 5:52Speaker 3: unfortunately are playing Trump or he's just so desperate for
- 5:55Speaker 3: a deal that he's going to kind of take, he's
- 5:57Speaker 3: going to make a deal that he shouldn't make. I
- 6:00Speaker 3: think that's where, if you, it was what, was it
- 6:02Speaker 3: last week or the weekend before where Cruz and a
- 6:04Speaker 3: bunch of the other people are like, you know, you
- 6:05Speaker 3: started this thing, don't take a deal just to end it.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Don't take a bad deal.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I don't think he will. I really don't think he will.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I hope he doesn't. And I think that might be
- 6:16Speaker 1: a mistake. I mean, hey, I'm rooting for the best,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but you understand these other countries aren't getting involved because
- 6:24Speaker 1: they're saying to Trump, you started this mess. You fix it.
- 6:29Speaker 1: We weren't for this from the beginning.
- 6:31Speaker 3: It's going to affect them in the end. It's probably
- 6:33Speaker 3: more than it will affect them. Like I said, we
- 6:36Speaker 3: have enough oil.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I don't know about that. You hear about the global market.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I don't buy any of that. Listen, I hope this
- 6:45Speaker 1: all works out. Let me start with that. But I
- 6:48Speaker 1: go back to say, this has gone on longer than
- 6:52Speaker 1: he thought it would go on, in my opinion. The
- 6:55Speaker 1: deals eminent doesn't, like that guy was saying, five times
- 6:58Speaker 1: you hear that, zero deals. And according to that analyst,
- 7:02Speaker 1: he says Iran's in a better position now than ever
- 7:05Speaker 1: because of where things are heading oil-wise. And stay the course,
- 7:12Speaker 1: destroy the American economy. Stay the course.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I'm a lot less worried about that long term than
- 7:18Speaker 3: I am what you and Boss Lady were talking about
- 7:20Speaker 3: because she hit the nail on the head. A lot
- 7:23Speaker 3: of this H-1B visa stuff that Vivek is pushing, he's
- 7:27Speaker 3: in trouble with that, I think. Like I said, I've got..
- 7:30Speaker 1: Then vote for Amy Acton, because that's just... I don't
- 7:33Speaker 1: care if it's a lesser of two evils. It's still
- 7:35Speaker 1: a lesser of two evils.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I've talked till I'm blue in the face to two
- 7:40Speaker 3: of my three kids, and they probably just won't vote
- 7:43Speaker 3: for governor, but they won't.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Vote for me. Well, then that is voting, because you
- 7:47Speaker 1: won't take a stand. Listen, all my life I've had
- 7:50Speaker 1: to vote for the lesser of two evils in many cases,
- 7:52Speaker 1: but it still is a lesser of two evils.
- 7:57Speaker 3: You and I are old-timers, and we understand that. When
- 7:59Speaker 3: you're in your 20s, you don't understand that.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Well, no, I think they're capable of understanding it. I
- 8:05Speaker 1: just don't think that they get it. I don't think
- 8:07Speaker 1: they're stupid. I think that they just, I don't know why.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I just think it is stupid. I don't think they're stupid,
- 8:14Speaker 1: but it's ridiculous.
- 8:16Speaker 3: You look at a lot of these college graduations right
- 8:19Speaker 3: now where you've got speakers that are talking about the
- 8:21Speaker 3: future in AI and they're getting booed because these kids
- 8:24Speaker 3: that are graduating from college aren't stupid. They see all
- 8:27Speaker 3: the hard work, money, and effort and time that they've
- 8:29Speaker 3: invested in a college degree and basically going out the
- 8:32Speaker 3: window because they're going to get replaced by robots, artificial intelligence,
- 8:36Speaker 3: and H-1B visa workers coming in from India willing to
- 8:40Speaker 3: undercut them for half the pay.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:46Speaker 3: So, I mean, that's why they're not voting for that,
- 8:48Speaker 3: because Vivek is 100% in on all that stuff. He's
- 8:51Speaker 3: huge on data centers. He's huge on H-1Bs. And, I mean,
- 8:55Speaker 3: like I said, I'm voting for him because I think
- 8:57Speaker 3: I can't fathom Amy Acton running the state of Ohio.
- 9:01Speaker 3: you know, it should be like Mondami. So I'll vote
- 9:04Speaker 3: for him, but I can understand how a younger person
- 9:06Speaker 3: could say, I just can't.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's where you and I part company. I don't understand
- 9:10Speaker 1: it at all. It's, it's pretty simple to me, the
- 9:13Speaker 1: lesser of two evils. I mean, and I, I don't
- 9:16Speaker 1: necessarily think the fake is a horrible evil. I just,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I think he's got the, he would run Ohio much
- 9:21Speaker 1: better than she would period. And, and I mean, if
- 9:25Speaker 1: you can't see that, Then I don't know what to say. Listen,
- 9:29Speaker 1: I can sit here and say DeWine is a disaster.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I mean, the fraud, the Somalian fraud, what's taking place
- 9:37Speaker 1: in Ohio isn't any better than Tampon Tim. And I
- 9:41Speaker 1: sometimes wonder, is that why the attorney general left and
- 9:44Speaker 1: went to this Catholic charity or whatever this organization is
- 9:48Speaker 1: that he went to? Because he realized the crap's going
- 9:51Speaker 1: to be hitting the fan here? Because people are going
- 9:53Speaker 1: to say, well, where's the attorney general? Where's the auditor?
- 9:56Speaker 1: Where's the governor? Why weren't the... elected officials doing anything?
- 10:02Speaker 1: The same questions we ask in Minnesota.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Well, I mean, just look what he's... Look what he's
- 10:07Speaker 3: line-item vetoed. All the things, all the property tax stuff
- 10:10Speaker 3: that Dave Thomas passed, some of which they were able
- 10:13Speaker 3: to get overridden, but not all of it. I don't think...
- 10:15Speaker 3: He just doesn't care about the average Ohioan. All he
- 10:18Speaker 3: cares about is these special interest groups, these Somalians and...
- 10:21Speaker 3: The Haitians down in Springfield and all that stuff. I
- 10:24Speaker 3: don't get it. I don't get how they're more important
- 10:26Speaker 3: than the taxpaying citizens of the state of Ohio.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Well, I go back to this. Why are data centers getting,
- 10:32Speaker 1: what is it, over a billion? So they don't pay
- 10:35Speaker 1: sales tax. You do. And it's over a billion dollars. It's, what,
- 10:40Speaker 1: a billion and a half dollars. It's just in one
- 10:43Speaker 1: year that the state lost in tax revenue from them
- 10:48Speaker 1: paying the same tax you have to pay.
- 10:52Speaker 3: What's like to see the permanent jobs that they have
- 10:54Speaker 3: i i bet if you add up all the data
- 10:55Speaker 3: centers in ohio i don't care all the jobs i
- 10:58Speaker 3: don't care i bet it i bet it doesn't equal
- 11:00Speaker 3: wardstown i bet it doesn't equal the laws.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Of wardstown right i i could care less i'm just
- 11:05Speaker 1: saying about the tax aspect that's that's all.
- 11:08Speaker 3: It matters invested because you're not creating jobs i don't
- 11:12Speaker 3: even understand why you want and why you really want
- 11:14Speaker 3: them here because They only produce something like 30 or
- 11:19Speaker 3: 40 jobs for every data center, permanent jobs after the construction.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Well, they're going to go somewhere. I go back to
- 11:24Speaker 1: say this. You will use it. Everyone bitching about them
- 11:27Speaker 1: will use it. They're going to go somewhere, and if
- 11:30Speaker 1: they're somewhere in your grid of states, if your energy
- 11:35Speaker 1: costs are going to go up, they're still going to
- 11:36Speaker 1: go up, and you're not going to get any of
- 11:37Speaker 1: the benefits of the construction jobs, the real estate taxes.
- 11:44Speaker 1: or any of the jobs that are there, period. But
- 11:48Speaker 1: I view it more as what it can do for
- 11:51Speaker 1: your community on a tax basis.
- 11:55Speaker 3: But once again, going back to what you and Boss
- 11:57Speaker 3: Lady were talking about, you're going to see so much
- 11:59Speaker 3: job destruction over the next five to ten years. I
- 12:03Speaker 3: know like in healthcare, pharmacy will be gone in 10 years.
- 12:07Speaker 3: My job won't exist. The number of pharmacists you need
- 12:11Speaker 3: will be one-tenth of what's required today to do the
- 12:14Speaker 3: same job.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Why is that?
- 12:15Speaker 3: It's just gone. Because the technology is improving to the
- 12:18Speaker 3: point you'll go to the doctor, the doctor will send
- 12:21Speaker 3: the script to a box, and the box will have
- 12:23Speaker 3: it on your front door by that night. Some drone
- 12:26Speaker 3: or courier, somebody's going to put it there. You're not
- 12:27Speaker 3: going to need us. Already, when scripts come in, they're
- 12:32Speaker 3: electronically sent from the doctor's office to our pharmacy. Fields
- 12:36Speaker 3: are already pre-populated. It's already selected the right patient, the
- 12:39Speaker 3: right drug, the right doctor. I've been told by the
- 12:42Speaker 3: end of the year the right directions will be in there.
- 12:44Speaker 3: So we're just basically double-checking the AI to make sure
- 12:47Speaker 3: it's correct. It actually has gotten easier in the last
- 12:55Speaker 3: two years with AI to check prescriptions. The error rates
- 12:58Speaker 3: have gone down substantially. So it's not a bad thing,
- 13:01Speaker 3: but once again, you're going to have a lot of
- 13:03Speaker 3: job destruction from the technology already. I'm surprised we haven't
- 13:07Speaker 3: cut hours, to be honest with you, because I don't
- 13:09Speaker 3: think we need as much help as we used to have.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Well, we shall see about that, but DeWine is such
- 13:14Speaker 1: a disappointment in all of this.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Without a doubt.
- 13:18Speaker 1: All right.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Yeah, he's terrible.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Thank you. Appreciate it, Rich.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Take care, Ron.
- 13:21Speaker 1: All right, you're on air.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Well, I don't know.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Ted the Conservative.
- 13:26Speaker 2: You just made my point. I was calling him to
- 13:28Speaker 2: be devil's advocate. And you just said that they're going somewhere, right?
- 13:37Speaker 2: They're going up. The world is evolving. We can't stop it.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I would rather have them in my area. I would
- 13:44Speaker 1: rather have them here than in Columbus.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Okay, so let's talk. Let's look at the balance. You're
- 13:51Speaker 2: upset about a sales tax that was a sales tax credit, right?
- 13:55Speaker 1: A sales tax waiver. Right. A total waiver.
- 13:59Speaker 3: And equipment, everything, right? Yes.
- 14:01Speaker 2: So, okay. So in order to lose something, you have
- 14:05Speaker 2: to have something. So what did we lose by giving
- 14:09Speaker 2: them the PhilPax credit? We didn't lose anything.
- 14:13Speaker 5: No.
- 14:14Speaker 2: They didn't come here. They didn't build the facility. So
- 14:17Speaker 2: you didn't lose money.
- 14:19Speaker 1: No, no. The state lost money, and I'm a member
- 14:22Speaker 1: of this state. The state lost. Hear me out.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Hear me out. If they don't locate here, okay, they
- 14:30Speaker 2: don't come to Ohio. You don't have the facility. Let's
- 14:36Speaker 2: look at what they do pay. What do they pay?
- 14:38Speaker 2: What do data centers pay? They build them, right? There's construction.
- 14:43Speaker 2: There's land acquisition.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Stand by. Stand by. Back in a minute. News Radio
- 14:47Speaker 1: 570 WKBN.
- 14:49Speaker 6: Youngstown's news, weather, and talk station, 570 WKBN.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Ron Furb, News Radio 570 WKBN. Where's Ted?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Hello?
- 15:03Speaker 1: Ted? Where did I have him?
- 15:09Speaker 2: Ted?
- 15:09Speaker 3: Hello?
- 15:12Speaker 1: You're not Ted.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Yes, I am.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Is this Ron? Yes.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Ron, how you doing?
- 15:18Speaker 3: This is Ted.
- 15:19Speaker 2: First time caller.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Oh, Ted the conservative?
- 15:22Speaker 2: No.
- 15:24Speaker 3: The other Ted.
- 15:26Speaker 1: The other Ted? Listen, I mean, what was the point
- 15:32Speaker 1: you were trying to make?
- 15:34Speaker 2: Okay, so what type of revenue do data centers produce
- 15:38Speaker 2: for the state of Ohio? Do they pay property taxes?
- 15:42Speaker 1: In some cases, yes, and in some cases, no.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Okay, do they purchase energy?
- 15:50Speaker 1: In 2024, the state sales tax exemption for data centers
- 15:53Speaker 1: cost Ohio in 2024 $ 555 million in revenue. From four
- 15:59Speaker 1: times more than was forecasted in 2025, it cost a
- 16:04Speaker 1: whopping $ 1. 6 billion in sales tax revenue. So in two years,
- 16:11Speaker 1: we lost $ 2 billion in sales tax revenue. And I'm
- 16:16Speaker 1: looking here because in some places, they get a damn
- 16:19Speaker 1: property tax abatement. This is unreal.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I hear what you're saying, but I want you to
- 16:24Speaker 2: try to hear what I'm saying. If they didn't come here,
- 16:27Speaker 2: we would have not had that revenue anyway, right?
- 16:31Speaker 1: Correct.
- 16:31Speaker 2: So they used that to entice them to build that
- 16:34Speaker 2: facility here.
- 16:35Speaker 1: You don't need to do that. I go back to this.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Are other states vying for the same?
- 16:42Speaker 1: I don't care. You do not need to do. This
- 16:44Speaker 1: is the bull crap thing that they sell you on this. Well,
- 16:47Speaker 1: we got to do it to get them here. First
- 16:49Speaker 1: of all, a lot of areas don't want them. You
- 16:52Speaker 1: don't have to do this. I go back to say
- 16:54Speaker 1: we have the right weather. We have the right data centers,
- 16:58Speaker 1: much different than building a factory. You have to have
- 17:01Speaker 1: the right weather. You have to have the right transmission lines.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You have to have the right location. That's why they
- 17:06Speaker 1: want to be in Lordstown. There's certain areas that are
- 17:11Speaker 1: more primed than others. They're more apt, like, for example,
- 17:14Speaker 1: they're going to be in Virginia because it's close to
- 17:16Speaker 1: the government, Washington, D.C. I mean, so it's a prime location.
- 17:21Speaker 1: They're not crazy about the Sunbelt, although they have to
- 17:24Speaker 1: be there because of the air conditioning cost in a
- 17:27Speaker 1: Sunbelt versus here in our weather. And Lordstown's a sweet
- 17:32Speaker 1: spot because of the transmission lines that are there, the
- 17:35Speaker 1: high transmission lines you can use. A lot of places
- 17:39Speaker 1: where they rip down coal plants, prime location because of
- 17:41Speaker 1: the transmission, the power lines that are needed.
- 17:45Speaker 2: So what is the advantage of having a data center
- 17:48Speaker 2: in your community? Is there an advantage?
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yes, if a data center comes here. First, you offset
- 17:55Speaker 1: some of your property tax costs. No exemption. I'm against
- 17:58Speaker 1: any exemption. They pay property taxes and it lowers the
- 18:02Speaker 1: property tax on every homeowner because you shift a large
- 18:05Speaker 1: part of that burden to that company. Secondly, the construction
- 18:10Speaker 1: jobs that come from it, the sales tax that comes
- 18:12Speaker 1: from it, and the maintenance jobs that come from it.
- 18:15Speaker 1: The constant heating and cooling issues.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I'm sure there's a lot of ancillary income for local
- 18:22Speaker 2: businesses also.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Yes. Stand by. Stand by. Back in a minute with
- 18:27Speaker 1: Ted the Conservative and more.
- 18:28Speaker 6: News Radio 570 WKVN. Now, Ron Verb on News Radio
- 18:38Speaker 6: 570 WKBN.
- 18:39Speaker 1: All right, before I get back to any of the callers,
- 18:43Speaker 1: I want to go here for just a bit. I
- 18:46Speaker 1: text you to have you call in. It's State Rep.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Dave Thomas. Hi, Dave. Hey, Ron. All right, so I'm
- 18:56Speaker 1: reading this article in a trip, and I'm boiling here,
- 19:01Speaker 1: all right? So I text you. And it says here,
- 19:05Speaker 1: Ohio's biggest tax break for data centers is more expensive
- 19:08Speaker 1: than one's thought. I'm not going to get into all this.
- 19:11Speaker 1: In 2024, data centers didn't pay sales tax on all
- 19:17Speaker 1: the stuff that they buy to build these. That was
- 19:19Speaker 1: $ 555 million. Then last year, it was $ 1. 6 billion. So
- 19:21Speaker 1: it's basically $ 2 billion. that these data centers did not
- 19:28Speaker 1: pay in state sales tax, $ 2 billion, as I say
- 19:33Speaker 1: on the air, for buying the materials to build these
- 19:36Speaker 1: data centers in Ohio. But if I add on to
- 19:39Speaker 1: my garage, as I like to say, I got to
- 19:41Speaker 1: pay that sales tax as a citizen of Ohio. Now,
- 19:48Speaker 1: then I go back and read... even there was some,
- 19:52Speaker 1: I'll find it in the article, some property tax abatements
- 19:55Speaker 1: on some of them, which just bothers me even more.
- 19:59Speaker 1: So they say, well, this sales tax abatement goes back
- 20:02Speaker 1: to 2016. And what is going on here, Dave? I mean,
- 20:08Speaker 1: why is this happening if we're a sweet spot for
- 20:11Speaker 1: data centers with the weather, with the transmission lines, and
- 20:16Speaker 1: they want to be here? Why is any of this
- 20:18Speaker 1: happening that screws the Ohio citizen? And what's being done
- 20:22Speaker 1: about it?
- 20:24Speaker 4: I 100% agree with you. I'm actually fuming even more.
- 20:30Speaker 4: You probably haven't seen what the governor just did. We
- 20:34Speaker 4: just got rid of it just now. But to go back,
- 20:38Speaker 4: so this exemption exists. It's at the state level for
- 20:41Speaker 4: the sales tax. The legislature, we all voted to remove
- 20:46Speaker 4: this exemption to say sales tax half is being paid
- 20:50Speaker 4: fully by data centers moving forward. We did that in
- 20:53Speaker 4: the budget last year. We put that in.
- 20:57Speaker 2: It passed.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Against the wishes of the labor unions and against the
- 21:00Speaker 4: wishes of the data centers, it passed. The governor then
- 21:03Speaker 4: vetoed it. He vetoed that provision, which removed the exemption,
- 21:08Speaker 4: meaning that the sales tax exemption was still in place.
- 21:12Speaker 4: He vetoed it for several reasons, one of which was
- 21:15Speaker 4: that he said this is a small exemption.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Bull crap. Not costing that much. Two billion.
- 21:21Speaker 4: I don't agree. Well, so here's the other reason why
- 21:25Speaker 4: I'm fuming. I'm fuming on a good number of reasons.
- 21:28Speaker 4: But he vetoed because he said it was small. That's
- 21:30Speaker 4: number one. Number two, he vetoed it because he said
- 21:33Speaker 4: that we need them in order to attract the data
- 21:36Speaker 4: centers here.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Bullcrap. Bullcrap. Would you agree that that's total bullcrap?
- 21:41Speaker 4: Oh, completely. And then three, he vetoed it because essentially
- 21:49Speaker 4: this is something that... uh, was, uh, uh, kind of
- 21:53Speaker 4: given in response or, or in the negotiation, like I said,
- 21:57Speaker 4: with some of our, our labor union.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Folks, I don't care. It's this is go ahead.
- 22:03Speaker 4: It's just, Oh, you're, you're, you're, you're speaking my language
- 22:07Speaker 4: right now. Um, so he vetoed it. Uh, the estimate
- 22:11Speaker 4: was about a $ 200 million loss of state tax revenue.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Totally wrong.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Yep.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Became back. Um, have been trying to get votes, whip votes,
- 22:21Speaker 4: to actually override that veto. We need 60 votes to override.
- 22:26Speaker 4: We have 65 Republicans.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Well, the Democrats should be for overriding it, too.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Actually, their minority leader came out strongly against overriding.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Oh, for the love of God.
- 22:39Speaker 4: No, we need this. This is a good exemption. So
- 22:43Speaker 4: we have not been able to get to those 60
- 22:45Speaker 4: votes to override. Now, Let's fast forward to last week.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Last week, the House and the Senate created a select
- 22:55Speaker 4: committee with the responsibility of drafting and having legislation ready
- 23:00Speaker 4: and passed by June 10th, which deals with a whole
- 23:04Speaker 4: host of issues with data centers. Things like electricity usage,
- 23:08Speaker 4: which we talked about, zoning, siting, noise, and one of
- 23:13Speaker 4: them is this tax issue.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Now, today..
- 23:18Speaker 4: The governor just announced, while we were, you messaged me
- 23:21Speaker 4: and I was in my caucus meeting, while we were
- 23:23Speaker 4: in caucus, we found out that the governor is now
- 23:27Speaker 4: putting essentially a pause on the sales tax exemption for
- 23:32Speaker 4: data centers because of what came out last week. None
- 23:36Speaker 4: of us were aware of the actual cost and the
- 23:41Speaker 4: amount that was frankly hidden by the administration.
- 23:43Speaker 1: $ 2 billion.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Yes.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Until it was leaked to the news, we found out
- 23:48Speaker 4: the same way you did, by reading the newspaper and
- 23:52Speaker 4: by seeing it in the media, that the administration shared
- 23:55Speaker 4: it with them of how much it actually is costing
- 23:59Speaker 4: the taxpayers of Ohio, roughly $ 2 billion over that two-year cycle,
- 24:04Speaker 4: which is 10 times how much the administration told us
- 24:09Speaker 4: this would cost and what the exemption actually was. So
- 24:13Speaker 4: we are... not going to still likely be able to
- 24:18Speaker 4: actually do that override. What is likely going to happen
- 24:21Speaker 4: in its place, this bill that is going to be
- 24:25Speaker 4: passed by June 10th from the Select Committee on Data Centers,
- 24:30Speaker 4: I've smoothed the amendment several others have as well to
- 24:32Speaker 4: just completely strip out that exemption. I think there's enough
- 24:36Speaker 4: support as a kind of package deal for there to
- 24:39Speaker 4: be definitely there's enough support over 50 votes just to
- 24:42Speaker 4: take it out. What's happened over the last week where
- 24:46Speaker 4: no one knew, and then it was released, and now
- 24:48Speaker 4: he's essentially saying he probably shouldn't have vetoed it.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Which is correct. This is, first of all, I want
- 25:00Speaker 1: to make sure I understand this. So as a result
- 25:03Speaker 1: of the public being informed that His decision screwed us
- 25:07Speaker 1: out of $ 2 billion. First time, I am really shocked
- 25:10Speaker 1: by the Democrats because the labor unions want it. The
- 25:14Speaker 1: Democrats are forgiving big business, this big tax break. I
- 25:18Speaker 1: go back to say, I got to pay the tax
- 25:20Speaker 1: if I buy a lumbered ad out of my garage
- 25:23Speaker 1: and all the supplies. But a data center, Facebook doesn't
- 25:28Speaker 1: have to. Google doesn't have to. These are companies that
- 25:31Speaker 1: can easily afford it. Now, That alone is troubling to me.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But we're talking $ 2 billion here that could be money
- 25:42Speaker 1: shifted back to the local government fund or ease some
- 25:45Speaker 1: of the burden on all of us here. So the
- 25:49Speaker 1: only reason you're saying he paused this is because the
- 25:52Speaker 1: public found out he screwed us out of $ 2 billion.
- 25:56Speaker 1: That's why he paused it. So if it's paused, that's
- 26:01Speaker 1: okay with me. Pause it for the next whatever. Don't
- 26:05Speaker 1: unpause it.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Yep, that's essentially what I'm hoping happens. He's paused it.
- 26:13Speaker 4: I'm hoping that we codify that in the law to say, no,
- 26:17Speaker 4: these have to pay their full sales tax burden to
- 26:20Speaker 4: help offset. You know, $ 2 billion could have actually decreased
- 26:24Speaker 4: the income tax another half a percent statewide.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Or I always hear, we're not getting money back to
- 26:31Speaker 1: our local government fund. It could go back to our
- 26:33Speaker 1: local communities.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Whole handful of different things. And this is also, you know,
- 26:38Speaker 4: you and I have been talking a lot about data
- 26:40Speaker 4: centers can be very good if they're developed and help
- 26:44Speaker 4: offset costs to local communities. And we've been preaching that.
- 26:48Speaker 4: And I keep bringing up that we have to remove
- 26:50Speaker 4: this exemption. And same thing I'm asking local governments, don't
- 26:54Speaker 4: give them abatements, don't give them exemptions. But we at
- 26:57Speaker 4: the state level have been hypocritical because we've been giving exemptions.
- 27:01Speaker 4: And now we're actually seeing, even the day before this
- 27:04Speaker 4: was released, We researched, looked up on Department of Taxation's website.
- 27:09Speaker 4: It was still estimated at $ 200 million.
- 27:11Speaker 1: What was that? Oh, the estimate's wrong. It's $ 2 billion.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yes.
- 27:18Speaker 4: Now it's $ 2. 6 billion. $ 2 billion over two years, $ 1. 6
- 27:21Speaker 4: billion for this year. But the estimate that the governor
- 27:25Speaker 4: had and that was given to us at the legislature
- 27:27Speaker 4: is roughly $ 200 million for the loss of revenue.
- 27:31Speaker 3: All right.
- 27:32Speaker 1: So as a result of... us finding out in belly aching,
- 27:39Speaker 1: he's paused. In other words, any data center that going
- 27:42Speaker 1: forward has to pay a sales tax, correct?
- 27:45Speaker 3: Correct.
- 27:47Speaker 1: All right. And your legislation, you think you can get
- 27:52Speaker 1: the votes needed from the House and the Senate to
- 27:57Speaker 1: totally do away with this exemption if he would ever
- 28:01Speaker 1: unpause it. Is that correct? Correct.
- 28:05Speaker 4: The data center bill that's coming from the select committee,
- 28:07Speaker 4: we will definitely have the votes for. It's a matter
- 28:09Speaker 4: of what's in there. I'm pushing to have the full
- 28:11Speaker 4: removal of the exemption. I'm not sure how it's going
- 28:15Speaker 4: to actually get packaged and finalized. I'm not on the
- 28:19Speaker 4: select committee, but I think there's enough support to do that.
- 28:24Speaker 4: So fingers crossed, hopefully we can just get it completely removed.
- 28:28Speaker 4: My guess is if it's not completely removed, there's some
- 28:31Speaker 4: type of kind of incentive thing where, Hey, you.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Can get, Oh no, it's got to go. It's no,
- 28:37Speaker 1: I'm not into compromising on this. It's, it's got to go.
- 28:41Speaker 1: You can't tell me how this is fair to any
- 28:43Speaker 1: citizen in Ohio or, or any local community that's getting
- 28:47Speaker 1: screwed under government fund period. I don't care if you're
- 28:50Speaker 1: a Democrat or Republican. I mean, this just, this reeks
- 28:54Speaker 1: of like that deal with house bill six. To me,
- 28:59Speaker 1: it's like, oh, this special thing carved out for these
- 29:02Speaker 1: data centers. Do you agree they want to be here?
- 29:04Speaker 1: We have the weather. We have the transmission lines. We're
- 29:08Speaker 1: not too hot. We're not too cold. We got the
- 29:10Speaker 1: right weather. We got the transmission lines. We're an ideal spot.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Would you agree?
- 29:14Speaker 2: We are perfect.
- 29:15Speaker 4: We are literally one of the best places.
- 29:17Speaker 1: So we don't have to give them any incentive on that.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Would you agree with that?
- 29:22Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Continue my cross-examining. I don't mean to make it sound,
- 29:28Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I'm not trying to try you here, but
- 29:32Speaker 1: I am, I guess. You should be upset.
- 29:36Speaker 4: The folks who are listening right now should be upset
- 29:38Speaker 4: because this was hidden from us. this is something we've
- 29:40Speaker 4: been trying to do and it's just another example of
- 29:44Speaker 4: the out of touchness that's been happening that we must get.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Corrected now right where is i even thought i saw
- 29:52Speaker 1: in here this is out of the trip by the
- 29:55Speaker 1: way that uh I thought I saw where some of
- 29:59Speaker 1: them had gotten property tax abatement, which just really gets
- 30:04Speaker 1: me even more.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Each local community can decide kind of what that abatement
- 30:10Speaker 4: looks like. If they give one, how much.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Well, I'm totally opposed to that.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Yes, I agree.
- 30:17Speaker 1: I mean, there's no reason to give a data center
- 30:21Speaker 1: a tax break, a property tax break either.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Yeah, because that's the perfect example of how one comes in.
- 30:29Speaker 4: They pay a good amount of taxes if they're fully taxed.
- 30:32Speaker 4: That amount of taxes helps lower your tax bill. It
- 30:35Speaker 4: helps offset. It gives actual breaks to people because it's
- 30:39Speaker 4: the business paying, not the individual.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Listen to this, State Rep. Dave Thomas. Republican lawmakers established
- 30:45Speaker 1: a tax exemption in the early 2010s to lure technology
- 30:49Speaker 1: companies to Ohio, the air... predates the modern hyperscale of
- 30:54Speaker 1: electricity incentive data centers that facilitate the artificial intelligence. So
- 30:59Speaker 1: this goes back to 2010. Well, it's outdated, basically, and
- 31:03Speaker 1: that's why it should go. Use that in your argument.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I throw that to you for free.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 31:09Speaker 4: We were told this was like a pilot. It was
- 31:11Speaker 4: like a test case, and it just exploded. And Even
- 31:17Speaker 4: the $ 200 million we thought was too much. That's why
- 31:19Speaker 4: we removed it.
- 31:20Speaker 1: So here's what I want you to do, Dave.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Are you ready?
- 31:22Speaker 1: We're going to practice, okay? Are you ready? We're going
- 31:26Speaker 1: to practice mock trial. We're going to say when these people,
- 31:30Speaker 1: Republicans and Democrats, are giving you a hard time, I
- 31:33Speaker 1: want you to say, fellas, do you think times have
- 31:35Speaker 1: changed since 2010? Would you agree with that? And then
- 31:38Speaker 1: make them agree with it, okay? Because times have changed
- 31:40Speaker 1: since 2010. Then do you think a tax exemption put
- 31:45Speaker 1: out in 2010 should be continuing today in 2026? Make
- 31:50Speaker 1: them commit to that and say, then we go right
- 31:53Speaker 1: into the data centers. There's nowhere that they can go,
- 31:55Speaker 1: you know what I mean? They'll be pleading guilty by
- 31:58Speaker 1: the time they're done.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Even this past year, I think.
- 32:04Speaker 1: I'm looking for the... Okay, are you ready for this?
- 32:11Speaker 1: A recent report from the Ohio Chamber of Commerce estimates
- 32:15Speaker 1: data centers have received $ 2. 5 billion in public subsidies, including
- 32:21Speaker 1: local property tax abatements, between 2017 and 2024. So I
- 32:24Speaker 1: know there's been what? In public subsidies.
- 32:25Speaker 2: So..
- 32:34Speaker 1: Including local, the same report states that they've contributed $ 3. 7
- 32:40Speaker 1: billion towards Ohio's GDP if you include direct and indirect inputs. Okay, great.
- 32:46Speaker 1: But they would have done it without any of this.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Would you agree? Yes.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Especially now. And that's part of the whole point. Like
- 32:53Speaker 4: you said, times have changed. We're now in a position
- 32:56Speaker 4: where we're a great place to be. We have the
- 33:00Speaker 4: infrastructure in place. We have the people now. Going back
- 33:03Speaker 4: to the labor union side, they are some of the
- 33:06Speaker 4: best at building them and the most kind of trained.
- 33:09Speaker 4: So if there's another reason, you know, maybe that tax
- 33:12Speaker 4: credit was a good at one point.
- 33:15Speaker 1: In 2010, it might have been a good idea, but
- 33:17Speaker 1: it's 2026. Last time I checked, that was 16 years ago.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Times have changed. Would you agree?
- 33:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and Times have changed even from 2025 when we
- 33:29Speaker 4: put this in the budget and it got vetoed. Had
- 33:31Speaker 4: that happened today versus..
- 33:33Speaker 1: Radio 570, WKBN. All right, Dave?
- 33:38Speaker 4: Yes, I'm still here. Although I'm a tab at Dave's,
- 33:40Speaker 4: I'm walking by the statehouse right now and there's a
- 33:43Speaker 4: drag queen protest happening out front.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Oh, God. Oh, Jesus. All right. Here's a lady emailed
- 33:51Speaker 1: me this. Just a quick comment. I don't know what
- 33:53Speaker 1: you know. Ron, I thought I heard this morning that
- 33:55Speaker 1: Ohio Democrats are trying to up taxes on people that
- 33:58Speaker 1: make $ 500, 000 a year or more so people can go
- 34:01Speaker 1: to college for free. Will you ask Dave about that?
- 34:04Speaker 1: Have you heard anything about that?
- 34:06Speaker 3: Yes.
- 34:06Speaker 4: That was a bill that was introduced just this past
- 34:08Speaker 4: week by two Democrats. It's considered a wealth tax. And
- 34:11Speaker 4: then they would give college away for free for anyone
- 34:14Speaker 4: in Ohio who wants it. Not happening.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Never going to occur.
- 34:18Speaker 4: The legislature is not increasing taxes on anybody. But they're
- 34:23Speaker 4: introducing a lot of bills right now just for campaign
- 34:26Speaker 4: purposes to be able to say, hey, I have a
- 34:29Speaker 4: bill that would do this, or I think we should
- 34:31Speaker 4: do this.
- 34:32Speaker 1: All right. This whole fraud thing, though, I mean, this
- 34:35Speaker 1: is blatant incompetence. I mean, I'm sitting back as a
- 34:39Speaker 1: citizen of Ohio saying the tax break given here for
- 34:43Speaker 1: the situation as far as the sales tax is concerned
- 34:47Speaker 1: with the data centers is so frustrating. It's $ 2 billion,
- 34:51Speaker 1: but the money that was stolen by the Somalians equally
- 34:53Speaker 1: is frustrating in how the DeWine administration has dealt with it.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Do you share my same frustration?
- 35:00Speaker 4: Me and the rest of the legislature... on the Republican side, 100%.
- 35:04Speaker 4: If you have time, the Medicaid committee had a long
- 35:08Speaker 4: committee this morning from about 10.30 until about 2, with
- 35:12Speaker 4: Auditor Faber, with the Attorney General, with a whole bunch
- 35:14Speaker 4: of different state organizations, talk about the fraud issue, and
- 35:18Speaker 4: that will be the basis of a reform bill that
