- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Happy Sunday to you, everyone.
- 0:04I can finally make this post now that I know that the awards
- 0:08have been given out.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I judged an exhibition while I was in Scottsdale,
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: and there was a piece that ended up getting,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: I believe,
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: an honorable mention.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: that I noticed when I first walked in the very first day,
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: no names on the paintings and just,
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: it just stood out to me.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And I can still remember that piece as well as all of the other pieces,
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: the first,
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: second,
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: third,
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: all the honorable mentions,
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: best pastel,
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: best water media.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: I remember all of them.
- 0:42But what I found interesting was once they finally put the
- 0:47names up on the pieces,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: this person was in my workshop.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And so I had to play very,
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 0:55innocent and coy the whole week while I was teaching because I
- 1:00knew that they were
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: going to get an award and be shocked by it.
- 1:03You know,
- 1:04people who are painting something that's not what you expect
- 1:09them to paint,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: and doing it so well, it's always amazing.
- 1:15But I feel like this person was really passionate about what
- 1:22she ended up painting.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I could see it in the painting itself.
- 1:26Sometimes,
- 1:27however,
- 1:29I've noticed that people are painting what they think will
- 1:33sell.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And again, this is not the case of this person at all.
- 1:37It just made me start thinking about the people that I've seen
- 1:41recently who are...
- 1:44switching gears to try to be in a more marketable stance for
- 1:50making money.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I have to make a living.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: We all have to make a living.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: This is our full-time job.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Sorry about that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: That was the alarm I have set to remind me to do this.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you heard it or not, but at any rate.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So I'm just going to keep going because this is all
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: supposed to be conversational anyway.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: I notice a lot of people who are sort of bridging this,
- 2:18taking this walk across this bridge to a place that I hope they
- 2:22feel passionate
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: about.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I hope they enjoy painting those subjects and in that style.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And it's just something they're exploring.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And it's certainly not my place to judge.
- 2:32But I've often been made aware by galleries or collectors that
- 2:40I paint all over the board.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And that's honest.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: I paint whatever I'm passionate about.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: If there is a horse or a cow or a bison in my painting,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: it's because I stood there and witnessed that animal and enjoyed it.
- 2:57And if I paint pink clouds,
- 3:00it's because I saw those and I was struck by them.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And if I paint blue mountains, it's because that's what I experienced.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I am not selling out, I guess is what I'm trying to say.
- 3:15And I hope that the people whose work I see that seem to be
- 3:23chasing an idea
- 3:26It's something they want to chase inside and not just something
- 3:32they're doing for their career.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Because that's going to get old really fast.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And what's the satisfaction in that?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: If I'm not learning and growing myself,
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: and painting something that's a challenge, it's just not worth it to me.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: All the money in the world is not worth it to me.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: So I just want to leave you with that idea to paint what grabs you,
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: what you're passionate about,
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: what you really want to paint.
- 4:01And I think that buyers will see in the end that that's what
- 4:07they want to collect.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Have a good day.
