- 0:04Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, welcome, welcome.
- 0:06Speaker 1: It's time for one on one with Bro. We have
- 0:08Speaker 1: print tating with us. How are you doing there, young man.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I'm doing very well. Tom. Thank you.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Well, you know something, it is really nice to have
- 0:15Speaker 1: you in here because we've had the younger guys from
- 0:21Speaker 1: fast Track talking about the lineage and the family tradition
- 0:26Speaker 1: when it comes to taking care of people's tires, people's cars,
- 0:31Speaker 1: people's trucks, anything with wheels on them, and they would
- 0:35Speaker 1: tell stories about how they got started so young. And
- 0:38Speaker 1: then just briefly speaking with you, I found out that
- 0:41Speaker 1: in the tire business you.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Started out very very young as well. Oh yes, weight
- 0:45Speaker 3: goes way back.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Goes way back.
- 0:47Speaker 4: So we moved here in seventy six, nineteen seventy six,
- 0:51Speaker 4: so I would have been about five years old. And
- 0:53Speaker 4: of course my dad, Ran was the manager of Otasco.
- 0:56Speaker 4: He grew up here in Bartlesviel he wanted to come
- 0:58Speaker 4: back to Bartlesville, so down at you know, right there
- 1:02Speaker 4: on the corner of Johnstone and Frank Frank Phillips, right
- 1:06Speaker 4: there on the corner. Now I think it's McGraw reality,
- 1:10Speaker 4: but that that was the Otasco. So those were the
- 1:13Speaker 4: little tire lanes, and that was the retail store that
- 1:15Speaker 4: all of us tape boys grew up in.
- 1:17Speaker 1: And boy, what you got a little bit of a workout,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I understand, yes, and that kind of carried over with
- 1:26Speaker 1: the young guys.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I mean we use there was a
- 1:31Speaker 4: lot of things that I picked up. My dad, Bob
- 1:33Speaker 4: Taate just he you know, he was with Otasco for
- 1:36Speaker 4: twenty five years and when he retired in eighty six,
- 1:39Speaker 4: he couldn't stay retired because he missed his customers, you know.
- 1:44Speaker 4: And as we developed a company, it was all circled
- 1:47Speaker 4: around the customer and there's just you know, not not
- 1:51Speaker 4: only did he take advantage of all the free labor
- 1:54Speaker 4: with four boys, put the bikes together, the flying old bikes.
- 1:56Speaker 4: If there's anybody listening that's had a flying oh and
- 1:59Speaker 4: it fell up, that was probably one of us trying
- 2:01Speaker 4: to put it together, you know.
- 2:03Speaker 2: The Lomblomb boy mowers.
- 2:04Speaker 4: But the one thing that stood out to me that
- 2:07Speaker 4: we carried forward and now to see Mitch and Clay
- 2:10Speaker 4: doing it with fast Track, was you know, my parents
- 2:15Speaker 4: had five kids, so we always did family suppers together
- 2:20Speaker 4: and It was a Sunday and we got home from
- 2:23Speaker 4: church and just like a lot of people do today
- 2:25Speaker 4: and especially back then, we had our family lunch and
- 2:29Speaker 4: it was about one o'clock and phone rang and it
- 2:33Speaker 4: was a customer that had bought a freezer from my
- 2:36Speaker 4: dad or was a customer of a tasco and his
- 2:39Speaker 4: freezer went down. Problem was he just put a beef
- 2:42Speaker 4: in there. Oh, and it was no hesitation. He said,
- 2:46Speaker 4: we'll be up there in thirty minutes. So he grabbed
- 2:48Speaker 4: us boys and we went down the store, opened it up,
- 2:50Speaker 4: took freezer up, and you know, just the little things
- 2:54Speaker 4: that had an impact on me was not only was
- 2:58Speaker 4: he doing it on a Sunday and there was no hesitations,
- 3:00Speaker 4: no questions asked. We even helped, you know, take the
- 3:05Speaker 4: old freezer out, but the new one in and then
- 3:08Speaker 4: transfer all the beef.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Wow.
- 3:10Speaker 4: So that kind of memory for us really ingrained in
- 3:15Speaker 4: us that at the end of the day, we always
- 3:18Speaker 4: and you know, we say, we're not in.
- 3:20Speaker 2: The tire business, We're in the people business.
- 3:22Speaker 4: And to be trustworthy and honest, and you know, we were
- 3:27Speaker 4: talking about it before we went on air work ethic.
- 3:30Speaker 4: That's the one thing that I promise you no one
- 3:32Speaker 4: can say that they're going.
- 3:32Speaker 2: To work harder in us.
- 3:34Speaker 1: That's that's true. I've seen Mitch and Clay in action
- 3:37Speaker 1: several times.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And when they first opened up the shop here on
- 3:41Speaker 1: Frank Phillips, I was down there getting a tire repaired,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and some customers that probably were customers of yours and
- 3:48Speaker 1: maybe even your father's had come in just a little
- 3:52Speaker 1: bit concerned about the wear and tear on their tires.
- 3:56Speaker 1: But the relief when they saw the name and the
- 4:01Speaker 1: relief when they saw the resemblance of the works they said,
- 4:07Speaker 1: they said, this really feels good to be back in
- 4:10Speaker 1: good hands. And it was a big relief. It was
- 4:15Speaker 1: a big feeling of confidence and just knowing that it
- 4:18Speaker 1: was going to be taken care of and done right.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And that really speaks volumes.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And these are two young guys starting out carrying on
- 4:26Speaker 1: a very fine tradition, and I think the ladies just
- 4:28Speaker 1: knew inherently that's what was going to happen. The tradition
- 4:32Speaker 1: was going to continue, and.
- 4:33Speaker 4: It has hands down, We're going to take care of
- 4:35Speaker 4: the customer. Yeah, so many times, you know, as we
- 4:38Speaker 4: grew through the years of business, I know a bunch
- 4:42Speaker 4: of very successful tire retailers across the country, worked with
- 4:49Speaker 4: a bunch of the guys that have fifteen hundred stores,
- 4:53Speaker 4: twenty one hundred stores. So many times in business they
- 4:57Speaker 4: overcomplicated and at the end of the day, it's really
- 5:01Speaker 4: a simple business, which is just take care of the customer,
- 5:04Speaker 4: no matter what I mean. That was something that was
- 5:06Speaker 4: ingraded in my dad. And then the thing that Chuck
- 5:09Speaker 4: and I always did, and you know, Clay and Mitch
- 5:11Speaker 4: worked a lot of years and talking.
- 5:12Speaker 2: About free labor. You know, when you have boys and
- 5:15Speaker 2: you have your own business.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Somehow they kind of enjoyed it.
- 5:17Speaker 4: From what I they were the guys when we'd get
- 5:20Speaker 4: in eleven hundred tires. They were the ones that would,
- 5:22Speaker 4: you know, after school that would come down.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So they grew up in the business.
- 5:26Speaker 4: But you know, we I respect and I know they
- 5:30Speaker 4: respect it because now they're the third generation. But something
- 5:34Speaker 4: Chuck and I did and we made sure that we
- 5:36Speaker 4: all of our people understood. You know, back then a
- 5:41Speaker 4: lot of my dad's customers that he had taken care
- 5:42Speaker 4: of since the seventies and eighties were our customers. So
- 5:46Speaker 4: we knew the pressure was on us to even take
- 5:49Speaker 4: care of them a little bit more, because the last
- 5:51Speaker 4: thing we wanted to do was upset one of you know,
- 5:54Speaker 4: our old generations. So now Mitch and Clay, and Mitch
- 5:58Speaker 4: is my son, Chuck is Clay. It is you know,
- 6:03Speaker 4: they have even more pressure now because they're the third
- 6:06Speaker 4: generation and they're still generation customers. That's what's been so
- 6:09Speaker 4: cool about, you know, one of the many things. One
- 6:11Speaker 4: being back on Barcelols serving our community that we grew
- 6:14Speaker 4: up and that we love. But seeing those generation customers
- 6:17Speaker 4: come in and the first thing they do is they
- 6:19Speaker 4: start telling stories about my dad, going, you know what,
- 6:23Speaker 4: your dad gave me credit to get my first I
- 6:26Speaker 4: couldn't afford it.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I had trouble.
- 6:27Speaker 4: It was no questions that he gave me my tires
- 6:30Speaker 4: or refrigerator. You know, Tasco was the Walmart before the Walmart.
- 6:34Speaker 4: They had everything, and you know he would just put
- 6:38Speaker 4: him down because he trusted them and knew that they
- 6:40Speaker 4: were truly neighbors and friends.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Wow.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Well, I gotta tell you what the guys the first
- 6:46Speaker 1: month or two, no, it was just two yeah, and.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Just now and it was about one hundred and fifteen degrees.
- 6:54Speaker 1: They did not let that bother them. They knew that
- 6:56Speaker 1: they had they were on a mission and they had
- 6:58Speaker 1: to complete it. Yeah, and they were just getting started.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And thankfully they're young. Yeah yeah, guy, my age would
- 7:05Speaker 1: have been able to keep up with it.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I can tell you.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Since I'm working with them again, I can't. But yet,
- 7:12Speaker 4: you know, we're not small people, so you're very tall.
- 7:18Speaker 4: That first week that they were in business, I think
- 7:20Speaker 4: it was like one hundred. The heat in X was
- 7:22Speaker 4: like one ten. And it was just them too, that's
- 7:24Speaker 4: all they could afford. And of course that you know,
- 7:26Speaker 4: that's their first location. It's out at seven hundred Southwest
- 7:30Speaker 4: Frank Phillips. And they I think that first week literally
- 7:34Speaker 4: I think they lost seventeen pounds. Oh yeah, between the
- 7:37Speaker 4: two combined. Yeah, I mean they were just working their
- 7:39Speaker 4: tails off. And you know, and when when you do
- 7:43Speaker 4: something like that, they grew up in the business and
- 7:45Speaker 4: they are just they are far more ahead of what.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Chuck and I ever wore at this age.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Sure, and but it's also good to get down and
- 7:54Speaker 4: get your hands dirty and know everything that's happening inside
- 7:58Speaker 4: their store.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Now, Fast Track cans two locations we mentioned, the one
- 8:02Speaker 1: on Frank Philps. We have another one out there on
- 8:04Speaker 1: Washington Boulevard. It's a brand new location that's recently opened
- 8:08Speaker 1: up just before winter hit. And my goodness, Sake said,
- 8:12Speaker 1: that looks like a that looks like a space station
- 8:15Speaker 1: out there. I mean, they've got everything.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Well, it's a beautiful store and it's a great location.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Oh oh, it does. And you know.
- 8:25Speaker 4: The thing that's different out there is that it does
- 8:28Speaker 4: have a quick loop center yep. And that's an oil
- 8:30Speaker 4: change center, and those oil changes are averaging about twelve minutes.
- 8:35Speaker 2: That's the one thing. The reason we build those types of.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Stores is all with the customer mind and also our
- 8:40Speaker 4: employees to have a facility that they are proud of.
- 8:44Speaker 4: And also when it comes to along with speed in
- 8:47Speaker 4: this business, there's there's process, there's standardization, but you've got
- 8:52Speaker 4: to have room to move in because the last thing
- 8:54Speaker 4: we want to do, because we appreciate so much when
- 8:58Speaker 4: that customer comes in the door. If you want to
- 9:00Speaker 4: wait on a set of tires, you want to wait
- 9:02Speaker 4: on an old change or a rotate, you're right, I mean,
- 9:04Speaker 4: right now, we measure those bay times and it's live.
- 9:07Speaker 4: They're averaging about twenty four minutes. And that's on the
- 9:10Speaker 4: tire side, and that's on the oil change center. The
- 9:13Speaker 4: oil change center is twelve minutes.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Wow.
- 9:16Speaker 4: So think of this time you come in, especially in
- 9:20Speaker 4: today's world. I'm not you know, I think everyone does
- 9:23Speaker 4: great in this business. We're never going to talk about
- 9:26Speaker 4: any of our competitors. We worry about inside our doors.
- 9:30Speaker 4: But the one thing that we're different. It's not going
- 9:32Speaker 4: to take you two or three hours to get an
- 9:33Speaker 4: oild change a flat of rotate set of tires. We
- 9:36Speaker 4: can get an oil change a set of tires. And
- 9:40Speaker 4: when we do a set of tires and we do
- 9:42Speaker 4: an old change, it's a fifty five point inspection. So
- 9:44Speaker 4: we're just not changing the filter and dropping the oil.
- 9:46Speaker 4: We're going through all your fluids, your belt, your hoses,
- 9:49Speaker 4: your air pressure, your lights, your wipers, we put your car,
- 9:53Speaker 4: and how we train our people. You treat this like
- 9:56Speaker 4: this is your nine year old grandma and she's taken
- 10:00Speaker 4: even though you've told her not to. She's gonna drive
- 10:02Speaker 4: this thing to California during the middle of summer. You're
- 10:05Speaker 4: gonna make sure that grandma gets California, right, I mean,
- 10:08Speaker 4: that's a great way to set it up. Yeah, So
- 10:10Speaker 4: we want to make sure and it's not we don't
- 10:12Speaker 4: call it up selling and all that. We want to
- 10:15Speaker 4: make sure that if there's any problems with your car,
- 10:18Speaker 4: a customer's car, we find it before you know.
- 10:21Speaker 2: But we can do all that.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Set attires are all change in about twenty eight minutes. Wow,
- 10:28Speaker 4: every other everyone in this business gets a little lazy,
- 10:30Speaker 4: and then all of a sudden, it's two hours, three hours.
- 10:32Speaker 4: You got to make an appointment or hey, drop it
- 10:35Speaker 4: off and pick it up later if you want to
- 10:37Speaker 4: wait on it. That's why the facility, I mean, it
- 10:40Speaker 4: is nice. I don't know if you've been a new one.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Oh I have, I've been in both.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, but you.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Know we got that little care center that has popcorn, water,
- 10:48Speaker 4: has coffee, spacious chairs. You know those chairs in the
- 10:53Speaker 4: corner are absolutely gorgeous and you know they're comfortable. And
- 10:56Speaker 4: then we've got a business center, so if you're working,
- 10:59Speaker 4: you can off your laptop open, get a little bit
- 11:01Speaker 4: of work done, watch a little bit of ESPN or
- 11:04Speaker 4: whatever you want to watch. I mean, we've got big,
- 11:06Speaker 4: big screens. The other thing you'll get is you'll always
- 11:09Speaker 4: get one, Honestly, you will, because in this business we're
- 11:14Speaker 4: gonna mess up. I can't sit here and say that
- 11:16Speaker 4: we're not going to mess up your promise. I promise
- 11:20Speaker 4: you what we're going to do is we're gonna take
- 11:21Speaker 4: care of it.
- 11:21Speaker 3: There you go.
- 11:23Speaker 4: We're we're gonna give it back to you better than
- 11:25Speaker 4: what we found it.
- 11:27Speaker 3: That's the fast track tiring service promise.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it truly is it is.
- 11:32Speaker 3: You know you're talking about the wait time.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I fully anticipated when I went in the last time
- 11:39Speaker 1: or the first time, rather that I was going to
- 11:41Speaker 1: get a few innings of the ball game in and
- 11:44Speaker 1: that goremet popcorn was looking good. I didn't even get
- 11:48Speaker 1: a half a bag or two innings in and it
- 11:51Speaker 1: was time.
- 11:52Speaker 3: To go, And I said, well, what do you know, shazam?
- 11:56Speaker 3: It was? Is that quick?
- 11:57Speaker 4: Well you talked about this when you've had Mitch and
- 12:00Speaker 4: Clay in here, how excited they were to go to work,
- 12:02Speaker 4: even if it's six thirty in the morning.
- 12:04Speaker 3: They still are.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Truly, what we do is we try to have fun
- 12:07Speaker 4: and everything that we do so and our people buy
- 12:10Speaker 4: into that because you know, if you look at the
- 12:12Speaker 4: crew that we have, those are all people we've worked
- 12:14Speaker 4: with for the last twenty years.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Oh my I mean, we had people beating down the door, going, hey,
- 12:19Speaker 2: you guys are back.
- 12:20Speaker 4: In the business. We want to be a part of it.
- 12:23Speaker 4: So we look for little challenges like that. There was
- 12:26Speaker 4: no you know, I told you the fastest set of
- 12:28Speaker 4: tires this.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Is up and down.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Putting four tires on was like four minutes fifty seconds.
- 12:32Speaker 4: What's been really fun. And I've seen it out there
- 12:34Speaker 4: fast track. Somebody will hand them the keys. The car's already,
- 12:38Speaker 4: I mean, we're already pulling tires and getting ready for
- 12:41Speaker 4: They go over.
- 12:41Speaker 2: They make a cup of coffee, kind of read some
- 12:44Speaker 2: of the literature.
- 12:44Speaker 4: The coffee's going, they stirred up what you know, they're
- 12:47Speaker 4: putting sugar in whatever. They go, sit down and then
- 12:49Speaker 4: the car's back down.
- 12:52Speaker 3: It love it.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I mean we've had customers going, no, there's no way.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Your brakes are good, your wipers are good, and you
- 12:59Speaker 4: know with that, but that's the little things that we
- 13:02Speaker 4: you know, we know that time is you know, time
- 13:04Speaker 4: today is a commodity for people. That is, people do
- 13:08Speaker 4: not and they shouldn't have to. That's what I you know,
- 13:11Speaker 4: we preach every day. There's no reason why anybody else
- 13:16Speaker 4: on Barzlow should buy tires anywhere else or get their
- 13:19Speaker 4: vehicle service. We you know, when we do sales training,
- 13:22Speaker 4: we're the lowest price. We got a price match guarantee,
- 13:25Speaker 4: but we try to. I mean we spend a lot
- 13:27Speaker 4: of time price graping. What that is is making sure
- 13:31Speaker 4: that we're the lowest price in town. That was something
- 13:34Speaker 4: my dad always something we always did. We want to
- 13:36Speaker 4: be the best value in town. We're going to be
- 13:38Speaker 4: the fastest, I promise you. We're going to be the friendliest.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Oh yeah, indeed.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and we're going to stand behind that tire.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And one thing that really got me was that the
- 13:48Speaker 1: guys were saying, we know the tire that's going to
- 13:52Speaker 1: go to your vehicle and be the best match to
- 13:54Speaker 1: give you the best your ability, the best.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Bang for the buck, and the best value.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, you know something.
- 14:00Speaker 3: You know what The last time somebody told me that
- 14:01Speaker 3: was never?
- 14:03Speaker 2: Yeah, never, because you know what you always hear, you
- 14:06Speaker 2: always hear. Well, let me see what i've gotten.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Stock exactly, let me see what I have on sale,
- 14:11Speaker 4: or let me see what's best for me and not
- 14:13Speaker 4: for the customer. That's that facility. We've got thousands of
- 14:17Speaker 4: tires in stock, We keep three or four options for
- 14:20Speaker 4: everyone because we want them to have choices. If you
- 14:23Speaker 4: want the least expensive option, that's great. If you want
- 14:26Speaker 4: the best options, but we're going to try to find
- 14:29Speaker 4: the best tire because there's four contact patches controlling a
- 14:33Speaker 4: twenty five hundred pound vehicle. Think about that. So once again,
- 14:36Speaker 4: you talk about coaching. When we tell our salespeople, you
- 14:41Speaker 4: got to give them options, because what if it's a
- 14:43Speaker 4: family of six on the Turner Turnpike going to Oklahoma
- 14:46Speaker 4: City and they got to make emergency stop. We know
- 14:49Speaker 4: the better tires are going to stop quicker from sixty
- 14:52Speaker 4: from seventy to zero, or if it's raining, we know
- 14:55Speaker 4: they're going to have better traction. But you've got to
- 14:57Speaker 4: give the customer options. You have to tell them, hey,
- 15:00Speaker 4: this is what based on what you're telling me, this
- 15:02Speaker 4: is what I think is the best tire. And then
- 15:04Speaker 4: you also got to have those options. So we're the
- 15:07Speaker 4: least expensive for the quickest. Now we're probably not prettiest,
- 15:11Speaker 4: I mean to be honest, we're all big, ogre looking guys,
- 15:14Speaker 4: but I promise you we're gonna out We're gonna outwork anybody,
- 15:17Speaker 4: and we're gonna stand behind the product.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Where can we find fast track in town?
- 15:20Speaker 4: So seven hundred west Rank Phillips. Le's cross the tracks
- 15:24Speaker 4: on the right hand side. And then the new location
- 15:26Speaker 4: is thirteen hundred southeast Washington. Easy way to put it
- 15:30Speaker 4: right north of water Burger exactly exactly. And that smell
- 15:35Speaker 4: comes every morning. Body, Oh it's in and it's really good.
- 15:39Speaker 4: But yeah, so there's a Dutch Brother's coffee going in
- 15:42Speaker 4: right next door. It's the old Sooner Motel. You can't
- 15:45Speaker 4: miss us.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Oh righty.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Thanks for being with us today, you Tom, It's always
- 15:49Speaker 4: great to catch up.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Thanks for listening to one unneeded professional A paid presentation
- 15:57Speaker 3: in fourteen K one
