- 0:14Speaker 2: This is the Best of Stugatz & Company live on
- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Bob Costas is going to join us in hour number two.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Looking forward to that. Legend, Hall of Famer, Mount Rushmore broadcasters. Man,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I was watching baseball last night, Taylor. And the Brewers
- 0:35Speaker 1: are three outs away from winning the World Series. Games
- 0:41Speaker 1: and extra innings. It's in Tampa. Mostly Milwaukee fans. And
- 0:46Speaker 1: the only person, and this is strange, as I'm watching it,
- 0:51Speaker 1: laying in bed next to my wife, the person I'm
- 0:55Speaker 1: thinking about is Dan Byer. And what a misery he
- 1:02Speaker 1: must be. Now, they're still up 3-1. They're likely still
- 1:05Speaker 1: going to win the World Series. But I bring Dan
- 1:08Speaker 1: on here because I would like to know. Because, listen,
- 1:12Speaker 1: I will tell you, I was at 86. I told
- 1:15Speaker 1: you this yesterday. 86, Game 6, Mets, Red Sox. And
- 1:18Speaker 1: I was a misery headed into the ninth inning because
- 1:20Speaker 1: I thought the Mets were going to lose. And that
- 1:22Speaker 1: was my chance to win a World Series. And the
- 1:24Speaker 1: Mets haven't won a World Series since 1986. So, Dan Byer.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I'm laying next to my wife in bed last night,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and all I'm thinking about is you. How are you
- 1:33Speaker 1: feeling today?
- 1:35Speaker 3: It's interesting because my wife was just across the room
- 1:37Speaker 3: from me, and I don't think she was thinking of me.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I think she was wondering who was going to get
- 1:41Speaker 3: eliminated again from Dancing with the Stars. We had the
- 1:44Speaker 3: double TV going on. I had a good feeling after
- 1:48Speaker 3: that 11th inning. I am not a superstitious guy. I
- 1:52Speaker 3: don't like to make predictions. And I wanted to text
- 1:55Speaker 3: Jason Stewart, our executive producer, because I knew that he
- 1:58Speaker 3: was watching. Honestly, I wasn't sure if anybody was still
- 2:00Speaker 3: up on the East Coast. But I sent a text
- 2:02Speaker 3: and I just said, that was huge because the Rays
- 2:05Speaker 3: had a runner on second. They got a runner to
- 2:07Speaker 3: fly out. And I felt something good was going to
- 2:10Speaker 3: happen in the 12th inning. I thought maybe it'd be
- 2:12Speaker 3: Garrett Mitchell to hit a home run. Well, then Cooper
- 2:14Speaker 3: Pratt ends up doing all the work himself. And I thought, wow,
- 2:19Speaker 3: this is how it's going to end. This is magical.
- 2:23Speaker 3: And then to see what the Rays did, to see
- 2:26Speaker 3: what the Brewers didn't do, when they had runners on
- 2:29Speaker 3: the corners, I actually was like, just go to extras.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Go to 13.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Just get one across, and then we're fine. Don't have
- 2:34Speaker 3: to do anything crazy. But it was boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And, yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 3: it was very disappointing. Very, very disappointing because, yeah, I
- 2:43Speaker 3: thought it was a done deal when Pratt won yard.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Okay, but you're still up 3-1. We get more baseball.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You have your ace on the mound tonight in Tampa, Mizorowski.
- 2:53Speaker 1: But how are you feeling? You're not doubting the Brewers
- 2:55Speaker 1: at this point, are you? There's no way.
- 2:56Speaker 4: No, there is no doubt.
- 2:59Speaker 3: However, you know, wouldn't it have been like what a
- 3:04Speaker 3: moment it would have been to have Miz come in
- 3:05Speaker 3: last night to shut it down.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:07Speaker 3: But you can't do that because he's scheduled tomorrow and
- 3:09Speaker 3: you're up 3-0. So you've got decisions to make. And
- 3:13Speaker 3: I think ultimately they made the correct decision. But I
- 3:17Speaker 3: would love. their best pitcher or their second best pitcher
- 3:21Speaker 3: or their third best pitcher, their fourth best pitcher to
- 3:23Speaker 3: be able to have shut down last night. And that
- 3:26Speaker 3: didn't happen just because of, I mean, they used Uribe.
- 3:29Speaker 3: They used Ashby. They used McGill. They used pretty much everyone.
- 3:33Speaker 3: But they couldn't use Miz in that spot because of
- 3:35Speaker 3: his start today. And that was the, because there's that
- 3:39Speaker 3: moment right now in baseball when like, oh, my goodness,
- 3:41Speaker 3: the starter, the ace, the man is warming up in
- 3:45Speaker 3: the bullpen to shut this down. And that was just
- 3:49Speaker 3: never an option for them last night. And I hope
- 3:51Speaker 3: it gets done tonight because otherwise game six and seven,
- 3:56Speaker 3: There are already too many Red Sox Yankee tweets that
- 3:58Speaker 3: I saw last evening.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Right.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Then you get nervous if it goes back to Milwaukee,
- 4:01Speaker 1: which would be a nice story to win in front
- 4:03Speaker 1: of the home. Sure. But if you win tonight, you're
- 4:05Speaker 1: winning it anyway in front of the home fans because
- 4:07Speaker 1: no Tampa fans are there.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Fair enough. I see the Rays scoreboard. People even decided
- 4:13Speaker 3: to put Brewers world champions up, not even knowing that
- 4:15Speaker 3: the Rays had an opportunity to tie it.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Dan, I am surprised that. Pat Murphy is getting really
- 4:23Speaker 6: any criticism for not going to Mizorowski there and doing
- 4:26Speaker 6: everything possible in the ninth inning to get that game
- 4:30Speaker 6: across the finish line, because you're still up 3-0 in
- 4:33Speaker 6: the series. And it felt like too short-sighted of a decision,
- 4:36Speaker 6: even though I guess the thing at the end of
- 4:40Speaker 6: the road for you was a potential World Series, the
- 4:42Speaker 6: first in the Brewers franchise. But you can't put Mizorowski
- 4:47Speaker 6: into that situation and and jeopardize your pitching plans for
- 4:50Speaker 6: the remainder of the series.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Correct.
- 4:57Speaker 3: For that small of a window, plus I think we
- 4:59Speaker 3: believe Milwaukee is the better team. you know it's one
- 5:02Speaker 3: of those play for overtime or do you try to
- 5:05Speaker 3: win it at that point if you're the better team
- 5:06Speaker 3: you try to play for overtime they've got the 3-0
- 5:09Speaker 3: lead you've got other options you would think that at
- 5:11Speaker 3: some point they'd be able to break through so yeah
- 5:14Speaker 3: it just made sense my issue was that and this
- 5:18Speaker 3: is way inside baseball but i think baseball fans know
- 5:22Speaker 3: the brewers played up when they were up 3-2 and
- 5:25Speaker 3: i'd even texted this to the guys i didn't know
- 5:26Speaker 3: why they just could have just sacrificed the run, get
- 5:30Speaker 3: a double play to maybe end the inning because I
- 5:32Speaker 3: think the ball that ended up being hit up the
- 5:34Speaker 3: middle that was the tying run, could have been a
- 5:36Speaker 3: double play ball. They could have got out of it. Instead,
- 5:38Speaker 3: they played everybody up, and it went through, and then
- 5:40Speaker 3: the Rays just continued their rally. That's where I think
- 5:43Speaker 3: that the Brewers messed up, but I don't think anybody
- 5:44Speaker 3: cares about that, to be honest.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I think whatever nervousness you kind of hear in Dan's voice,
- 5:49Speaker 1: it's that he just doesn't want it to go back
- 5:50Speaker 1: to Milwaukee because 3-2, he knows Tampa's good. He knows
- 5:54Speaker 1: the Brewers gave him life last night and gave them
- 5:56Speaker 1: some confidence. He desperately does not want that series going
- 6:00Speaker 1: back to Milwaukee with Miz starting tonight. And you're only
- 6:04Speaker 1: up three, two, three, one feels a lot different than three,
- 6:06Speaker 1: two days.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Yes, it does.
- 6:09Speaker 3: And then have your ACE be used. So game six
- 6:12Speaker 3: could feel like a bit of a toss up. We
- 6:15Speaker 3: saw what happened in game two in the race, put
- 6:17Speaker 3: four on the board in the first Milwaukee was able
- 6:19Speaker 3: to rally, but outside of what happened in game three,
- 6:22Speaker 3: it's been a closely contested series. It's not like the,
- 6:25Speaker 3: the Brewers have been hitting the cover off the baseball
- 6:27Speaker 3: in the other games outside of Game 3.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Dan, I saw a stat that the previous four World
- 6:33Speaker 6: Series teams to avoid a sweep after falling behind 3-0
- 6:37Speaker 6: all lost Game 5. So I think you should still
- 6:39Speaker 6: feel very confident about the Brewers tonight, even before the
- 6:43Speaker 6: fact that Mizorowski's on the mound. And I saw such
- 6:46Speaker 6: a great stat, Stu, where... After game three, Jackson Churio
- 6:50Speaker 6: became the youngest to record four hits in a World
- 6:53Speaker 6: Series game since Joe Garagiola in 1946.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Dan, you want to pronounce it for him?
- 7:00Speaker 4: Joe Garagiola?
- 7:02Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 7:05Speaker 6: So Jackson Churio became the youngest to do it since 1946. Yes.
- 7:10Speaker 6: And then a day later, Cooper Pratt became the youngest
- 7:13Speaker 6: player to record four hits since Jackson Churio the day before.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Thankfully, they have easier names.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Did they put Churio 2026, you know, right under the stat?
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:23Speaker 3: There was a Babe Ruth stat last night that I'm like,
- 7:25Speaker 3: my goodness. And I forgot even what it was, but
- 7:27Speaker 3: there was somebody put... Since Babe Ruth 1926. I'm like, ah,
- 7:31Speaker 3: it's a pretty good company.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:34Speaker 4: You know what the stat is, Sam? Hold on. Sam's
- 7:37Speaker 4: got the stat.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 7:39Speaker 6: I believe it was the most hits through the first
- 7:42Speaker 6: four games of the World Series since Babe Ruth's in 1928.
- 7:45Speaker 4: It was like 10 hits in four games. Yeah, that
- 7:48Speaker 4: sounds about right.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Is that it? Yeah. Remember that one.
- 7:51Speaker 4: If not, who cares?
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah, right?
- 7:52Speaker 4: It's our own stat.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You want to take a stab at Joe's name again
- 7:56Speaker 1: or no?
- 7:56Speaker 7: No.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Joe Garagiola.
- 7:58Speaker 1: He called a series with Vin Scully in the 80s.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I mean, legend.
- 8:02Speaker 6: Garagiola.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Notice I haven't tried.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Garagiola.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I deflected to Dan.
- 8:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Wait, so, Dan, were you in celebratory mode last night?
- 8:14Speaker 1: When I was at 86 Game 6 with my dad,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you could bring anything into a stadium at that time, okay?
- 8:19Speaker 1: It was a free-for-all. And he had a bottle of champagne,
- 8:23Speaker 1: and he started to uncork that champagne in the ninth inning.
- 8:26Speaker 1: And me and my brother looked at each other. We're like, Dad,
- 8:28Speaker 1: what are you doing, man? You've been waiting so long
- 8:31Speaker 1: for the Red Sox to win a World Series. Don't
- 8:33Speaker 1: celebrate prematurely. Were you kind of in celebratory mode last
- 8:37Speaker 1: night at all? No, because of the error that led
- 8:40Speaker 1: off the bottom of the 12th. Right.
- 8:42Speaker 3: So the throw, like if you get one down, I know,
- 8:45Speaker 3: and the Brewers were celebrating, Brewer fans were celebrating after
- 8:47Speaker 3: the home run, but there's still the bottom half. And
- 8:49Speaker 3: if you can just get one out, then you're like, OK,
- 8:52Speaker 3: all right, here we go. And there wasn't because of
- 8:56Speaker 3: the throwing error by Ortiz. Like that was there wasn't
- 8:59Speaker 3: there wasn't an opportunity because now you're like, OK, great.
- 9:02Speaker 3: They've got a now a runner on base, no one out.
- 9:05Speaker 3: So there wasn't even that opportunity to really, really believe.
- 9:09Speaker 6: Stu, I was like you yesterday where I was sick
- 9:11Speaker 6: for Dan Byer as a neutral in this World Series
- 9:14Speaker 6: when I see the Brewers lose that game.
- 9:15Speaker 1: You were laying next to my wife? No.
- 9:19Speaker 6: But the Cooper-Pratt home run in the 12th inning to
- 9:21Speaker 6: put Milwaukee ahead, that's the kind of moment that should
- 9:24Speaker 6: live in Brewers history for eternity. And I'm always looking
- 9:29Speaker 6: for connections in these games, guys who I could root for.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 9:32Speaker 6: Cooper Pratt was the guy because he has a South
- 9:35Speaker 6: Florida connection in the world series. If you didn't know,
- 9:37Speaker 6: because I go to his Wikipedia page and I see
- 9:40Speaker 6: he was born in Hialeah.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yes. Right. Yes.
- 9:43Speaker 6: For people not familiar with South Florida, Ricardo, as our
- 9:46Speaker 6: South Florida expert, how would you describe Hialeah?
- 9:50Speaker 1: It is a, the most Cuban place of Miami. And
- 9:55Speaker 1: that's including H street and Calle Ocho.
- 9:58Speaker 8: Right.
- 9:58Speaker 5: 100%.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Miami is very Cuban, as most people know. This is
- 10:00Speaker 1: like the Cuban of the Cuban. Right?
- 10:03Speaker 4: So I have the numbers.
- 10:04Speaker 6: It says over 94% of Hialeah is predominantly Hispanic and Latino.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:11Speaker 6: With a strong Cuban and Cuban-American heritage.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:14Speaker 6: If I saw Cooper Pratt in Hialeah, I'd ask him
- 10:18Speaker 6: if he was lost. Look up Cooper Pratt if you
- 10:20Speaker 6: haven't seen him. He doesn't look like he's from Hialeah?
- 10:25Speaker 1: He's not.
- 10:25Speaker 2: He's not.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I think we need an expert. Board up, Ricardo. Have
- 10:28Speaker 1: you looked at this? We are talking. We're speaking out
- 10:30Speaker 1: of school here. Does Cooper Pratt look like he's from Hialeah?
- 10:33Speaker 4: He looks like he's from Boca.
- 10:34Speaker 1: West Palm, yes. That's an entirely different world. That's where
- 10:40Speaker 1: I live. His parents must have gotten lost or something
- 10:44Speaker 1: when he was born.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Here's the other part of it.
- 10:48Speaker 3: We've now reached an era where Coopers are making magnificent
- 10:52Speaker 3: plays in World Series.
- 10:54Speaker 4: The evolution of names.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Like Brewer said, Cecil Cooper. That's a last name. That
- 11:00Speaker 4: was an 82.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Now we're going to now we're we're starting off a
- 11:03Speaker 3: decade of Coopers and Aiden's. All these kids are going
- 11:07Speaker 3: to be making plays like Cooper Pratt is such a
- 11:10Speaker 3: young kid sort of name. And I felt like last
- 11:13Speaker 3: night was a great like jumping off point for. All right,
- 11:17Speaker 3: here we go. Another now the next decade or two
- 11:19Speaker 3: are going to be filled with Coopers and Aiden's winning MVPs.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Right. Two decades from now, some guy named Pratt, first
- 11:25Speaker 1: name Pratt, is going to win an MVP. Right. Is
- 11:27Speaker 1: that what you're saying?
- 11:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 4: And it's just the new age name, like Cooper, like everybody,
- 11:31Speaker 4: you know, Cooper, Jackson.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Like it's they're all there. They're in the Brewers lineup.
- 11:36Speaker 4: It just.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it feels it made me feel old is what
- 11:39Speaker 3: it did. There were no there were no mics going
- 11:41Speaker 3: yard in the 12th inning.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Well, we're sorry, Dan. We're sorry, but you're still up 3-1.
- 11:46Speaker 1: You have your ace on the hill, and it's going
- 11:48Speaker 1: to be a packed house of Brewer fans at the
- 11:51Speaker 1: drop tonight in Tampa, and they don't want to go home.
- 11:54Speaker 1: They're fine celebrating it right in Tampa. Yes.
- 11:56Speaker 6: Tampa should be embarrassed what that stadium looked like yesterday.
- 11:59Speaker 1: They should be. Well, they should be embarrassed just about
- 12:01Speaker 1: how the stadium looks when no one's there. But they
- 12:05Speaker 1: should be embarrassed that their fans have basically given up
- 12:07Speaker 1: on the team. I mean, and the Brewers fans have
- 12:10Speaker 1: taken over Tampa.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Wow. Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Gatz
- 12:15Speaker 2: and Company live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
- 12:25Speaker 1: So we had Matt Leinert before we go out to
- 12:28Speaker 1: Sherman Oaks. Dan, we'll have a sports update. We had
- 12:30Speaker 1: Matt Leinert on the show yesterday. Bob Costas will join
- 12:32Speaker 1: us in hour number two today. Looking forward to that.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Hall of Famer Bob Costas. But we had Leinart on yesterday,
- 12:40Speaker 1: and Taylor, I don't know if you guys, if you remember,
- 12:43Speaker 1: but Leinart's talking about this group text that he's in,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and it's, you know, Paula Malu, and it's Ronnie Lott,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and it's Marcus Allen. It's a who's who of USC greats.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I imagine they call it Fire Lincoln Riley. I don't
- 12:57Speaker 1: know what the name of the group text is, but
- 12:59Speaker 1: if I told you that you could be, I'll give
- 13:02Speaker 1: out their phone number, we'll throw it to Dan, and
- 13:04Speaker 1: perhaps we'll get some calls on this, but if I
- 13:06Speaker 1: told you that you could be a fly on the
- 13:10Speaker 1: wall in any group text in sports right now. What's
- 13:14Speaker 1: the group text you want to have, you know, information
- 13:16Speaker 1: on like you want to have, you want to be
- 13:18Speaker 1: privy to, because I would love to see what's being
- 13:21Speaker 1: tossed around in the USC group text with Matt Leinart,
- 13:26Speaker 1: Carson Palmer, and the rest of those guys.
- 13:28Speaker 6: So for me, I'm biased. And the one I want
- 13:32Speaker 6: to know right now, what people are saying is the
- 13:34Speaker 6: New York Yankees, because you had the Joel Sherman podcast
- 13:39Speaker 6: where Jorge Posada said he doesn't feel welcome with the Yankees.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:43Speaker 6: And I would kill to know like what Derek Jeter
- 13:46Speaker 6: and Jorge Posada and Tino Martinez and Scott Brocious are
- 13:50Speaker 6: saying about that clown Brian Cashman.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yes. An Eagles group text would be fun to be in.
- 13:55Speaker 6: That would be a good one.
- 13:58Speaker 1: We'll take some calls, 877-99 on Fox, 877-99 on Fox.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Andy Reid, you kidding me? Seriously. You need a kicker
- 14:09Speaker 1: that badly that you're willing to sign that kicker? And
- 14:13Speaker 1: don't say I'm inconsistent because I said the same thing
- 14:16Speaker 1: about the Browns when they traded to get to Sean
- 14:18Speaker 1: Watson and what is the worst contract in the history
- 14:21Speaker 1: of sports. But you need a kicker that badly that
- 14:24Speaker 1: that you signed Justin Tucker. And when you're asked about
- 14:27Speaker 1: signing Justin Tucker and the off the field issues, your
- 14:30Speaker 1: response is, well, he dealt with that.
- 14:34Speaker 6: That's what it is.
- 14:36Speaker 5: You know, that's what it is.
- 14:36Speaker 1: No, it's not. It's terrible is what it is. Stop
- 14:40Speaker 1: talking back to me.
- 14:42Speaker 6: That kicking room right now between Harrison Butker and Justin Tucker,
- 14:47Speaker 6: it's like the 1994 Little Rascals movie, the He-Man Woman
- 14:51Speaker 6: Haters Club.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I mean, you can't need a kicker that badly where
- 14:54Speaker 1: you're willing to get Justin Tucker. And quite frankly, you
- 14:58Speaker 1: can't need a quarterback so badly that you're willing to
- 15:00Speaker 1: sign Deshaun Watson. I mean, just what? Now, Andy Reid
- 15:06Speaker 1: gets away with it because he's the head coach of
- 15:07Speaker 1: the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes is on that team and
- 15:09Speaker 1: everyone loves Kelsey and Taylor Swift. That is a bogus— can
- 15:17Speaker 1: I hear the sound from Andy Reid again? I wanted
- 15:20Speaker 1: to talk about group text, and now I want to be—
- 15:24Speaker 1: Hold on a second, all right? Yes, thank you, Seth.
- 15:26Speaker 4: And that was me. Actually, I messed that one up.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Sorry, Seth. Dan, is there a group text that you
- 15:33Speaker 1: wish you were a fly on the wall for?
- 15:37Speaker 3: I'd like to know who Ohio State's quarterback is going
- 15:38Speaker 3: to be. I was going to say, I'd love to
- 15:39Speaker 3: know what's going on in the Chargers group text. Mike
- 15:42Speaker 3: McDaniel is apparently going to McDaniel still going to make
- 15:45Speaker 3: the play calls, but just a few, just a few.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Let's go back to a yes.
- 15:52Speaker 1: The Nuggets. Give on. Kansas City would be a good
- 15:55Speaker 1: one because I'm wondering if any guys are texting each
- 15:57Speaker 1: other going, we need to kick her that bad.
- 15:58Speaker 6: Trent Green.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:02Speaker 6: Trent Green texting Tony Gonzalez.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Right. Christian Okoye. I mean, even Tariq Hill objects to it.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Dwayne Bowe coming in. Jesus. What are we doing? Let
- 16:15Speaker 1: me hear the sound of Andy Reid being pressed on
- 16:17Speaker 1: the signing of Justin Tucker. He's done his suspension, you know.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Take care of that business there.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I'll leave it at that for you. Of course you will.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Why expand on it? Why talk about the victims? I mean, geez. Anyway,
- 16:35Speaker 1: 877-99 on Fox. That is 877-99 on Fox. Let's go
- 16:40Speaker 1: to Brian, who is in Florida today. Brian, go ahead.
- 16:42Speaker 1: You're on Fox Sports Radio.
- 16:44Speaker 8: Hey, thanks for taking my call. My curiosity is, you know,
- 16:49Speaker 8: the other night before Monday Night Football last week, we
- 16:52Speaker 8: had the Joe Buck and Troy Aikman and man, I
- 16:56Speaker 8: would love, I would have loved to known group tech
- 17:00Speaker 8: at ESPN with executives and whatnot. Cause man, that, that
- 17:04Speaker 8: got messy and it's still messy and they have to
- 17:06Speaker 8: do a Superbowl again.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I know. So would you rather be on Joe Buck's
- 17:10Speaker 1: communication with ESPN or Troy Aikman's communication with ESPN? Because
- 17:14Speaker 1: those are two totally separate group techs.
- 17:18Speaker 8: Yeah, that's really crazy, right? Like, I mean, Troy, Troy's
- 17:22Speaker 8: got to be still on fire. He's on fire, man.
- 17:25Speaker 8: And he's got to work with this guy.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Man.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Yes. All right. Thank you. Thank you for the call.
- 17:33Speaker 1: That is a, an odd situation, but not odder than
- 17:36Speaker 1: Andy Reed's Justin Tucker to be his kicker because Harrison
- 17:41Speaker 1: Bucker or Bucker isn't any good. Taylor, why are you
- 17:47Speaker 1: telling me here? The Jets are going to be in
- 17:49Speaker 1: the market for a new head coach. They always are.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But why are you telling, you know who the next
- 17:54Speaker 1: Jets head coach is going to be? Because you've been
- 17:55Speaker 1: walking around telling me, hey, I know who the next
- 17:58Speaker 1: Jets head coach is going to be. And I haven't
- 18:00Speaker 1: really asked you. I haven't asked any follow-ups because I
- 18:03Speaker 1: just don't care. I'm indifferent to the Jets. They make
- 18:05Speaker 1: me sick.
- 18:06Speaker 6: I think the next Jets head coach is so obvious.
- 18:09Speaker 6: It's right in front of our face. It's like once
- 18:11Speaker 6: I say the name, you're going to be like, OK,
- 18:13Speaker 6: that actually does make sense because we could all agree.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Aaron Glenn, dead man walking, right?
- 18:17Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn is done. Aaron Glenn has given up. Aaron
- 18:20Speaker 1: Glenn doesn't know the rules. It's the worst indictment. It's
- 18:23Speaker 1: the worst thing you could say about a head coach
- 18:26Speaker 1: besides them signing Justin Tucker to be their kicker. It's
- 18:29Speaker 1: the worst thing you could say about a head coach.
- 18:31Speaker 1: He simply does not know down distance and rules.
- 18:35Speaker 6: So you hit on the point exactly where the Jets
- 18:38Speaker 6: keep hiring coordinators and asking them to learn how to
- 18:41Speaker 6: be head coaches on the fly. That's not working, not
- 18:44Speaker 6: even in the slightest. And the great late Nipsey Hussle said,
- 18:47Speaker 6: sometimes you have to take two steps back to take
- 18:50Speaker 6: 10 steps forward.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:52Speaker 6: I think the next Jets head coach, Rex Ryan.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Never should have left. You're right. It was sitting right
- 18:57Speaker 1: there for me.
- 18:58Speaker 6: The last time the Jets were relevant, the last Jets
- 19:01Speaker 6: head coach who won a playoff game, the last coach
- 19:04Speaker 6: who made opposing teams actually fear playing the New York
- 19:07Speaker 6: Jets where Rex Ryan, he's going to embrace the expectations.
- 19:10Speaker 6: He's going to embrace the media attention and the pressure
- 19:12Speaker 6: instead of running for it. so the last time you're
- 19:16Speaker 6: you're the jets had any relevancy was rex ryan the
- 19:19Speaker 6: consecutive afc championship games back to back in 20 in
- 19:23Speaker 6: 2009 and 2010 yeah he wins four road playoff games
- 19:26Speaker 6: he beats tom brady he beats bill belichick in foxborough
- 19:30Speaker 6: the jet the fact that the jets have not returned
- 19:33Speaker 6: to the postseason yep since 2010 yes feels crazy and
- 19:38Speaker 6: and people are going to say like rex ryan failed
- 19:39Speaker 6: at the end like of course he did that's why
- 19:41Speaker 6: he got fired but He failed at the end because
- 19:44Speaker 6: the roster got worse. The quarterback situation never really improved
- 19:48Speaker 6: going from Mark Sanchez. to Bryce Petty was in there
- 19:52Speaker 6: yeah Gino Smith right and then it felt like the
- 19:54Speaker 6: general manager and the head coach weren't on the same
- 19:56Speaker 6: page and and even when when Rex was failing he
- 20:00Speaker 6: was failing pretty spectacularly in New York towards the end
- 20:03Speaker 6: right You're still comparing his failures to the peak successes
- 20:09Speaker 6: and thinking the next coach could take you back to
- 20:11Speaker 6: where Rex Ryan took you. Nobody has come even close.
- 20:14Speaker 1: To that standard. No, Rex took me through the greatest
- 20:17Speaker 1: two seasons of me being a Jets fan for over
- 20:22Speaker 1: 40 years now. Back-to-back AFC championship games. We didn't get
- 20:25Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl. We were close. We didn't get there.
- 20:28Speaker 1: We were a game away. There were many big upsets
- 20:30Speaker 1: on the road. Here's what I loved about Rex Ryan.
- 20:33Speaker 1: He embraced being the Jets coach. He wanted to be
- 20:36Speaker 1: the Jets coach, and he still wants to be the
- 20:39Speaker 1: Jets coach. He wasn't ashamed of being the Jets coach.
- 20:42Speaker 1: He wasn't embarrassed about being the Jets coach. He brought
- 20:45Speaker 1: an attitude. He knew the rules. He knew down and distance.
- 20:48Speaker 1: He's a great defensive mind. He got the guys motivated.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I mean, for two seasons, he made me forget about
- 20:55Speaker 1: the 35 lousy seasons before Rex Ryan got there. And
- 20:59Speaker 1: he still wants the job. He lobbies for it all
- 21:01Speaker 1: the time. And so I think Jet fans would embrace
- 21:04Speaker 1: somebody who knows what the hell they're doing, okay, knows
- 21:08Speaker 1: down and distance, knows how many timeouts, is going to
- 21:12Speaker 1: answer questions honestly in a post-game press conference, is going
- 21:15Speaker 1: to handle a halftime interview as well. I think that
- 21:18Speaker 1: Jets would sign up, Jet fans would sign up for
- 21:21Speaker 1: Rex Ryan right now. And I don't think Jet fans
- 21:24Speaker 1: would mind, and I'm speaking on behalf of all Jet fans,
- 21:27Speaker 1: if they gave Rex Ryan a lifetime contract to be
- 21:29Speaker 1: the head coach. I'm serious, because very few people embrace
- 21:33Speaker 1: being the second team in town, playing for that embarrassing
- 21:37Speaker 1: organization and that embarrassment of an owner, Woody Johnson. Few
- 21:41Speaker 1: people have embraced it the way Rex Ryan has. He
- 21:44Speaker 1: was proud of it, he would be proud of it,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and he still wants to do it, and Taylor... You
- 21:48Speaker 1: are correct, sir. It was sitting right in front of
- 21:51Speaker 1: my face.
- 21:51Speaker 6: Yeah, the biggest mistake of Rex's first tenure was never
- 21:54Speaker 6: really figuring out the offense. So I think if you
- 21:56Speaker 6: bring him back, you're not asking him to recreate the
- 22:00Speaker 6: 2009 Jets where you're leaning on your defense, you're leaning
- 22:03Speaker 6: on your run game. You're hiring him to bring back
- 22:05Speaker 6: the identity of those teams while pairing him with some
- 22:09Speaker 6: modern offensive mind. And anybody who thinks that hiring Rex
- 22:12Speaker 6: Ryan would be out of left field, wrong they they
- 22:15Speaker 6: interviewed him in in uh 2025 before eventually hiring aaron
- 22:21Speaker 6: glenn yeah so it's obviously something that that woody johnson
- 22:24Speaker 6: at the very least has entertained and i think you
- 22:27Speaker 6: could say for as bad as the jets have looked
- 22:29Speaker 6: at times this year i think their general manager darren
- 22:33Speaker 6: has done a pretty good job building the roster where
- 22:37Speaker 6: they have young talent at premium positions and They've got
- 22:40Speaker 6: three first-round picks next year. They've got a chance to
- 22:43Speaker 6: add legitimate franchise-changing players. And just going across to the
- 22:48Speaker 6: New York Giants, where you look at what John Harbaugh
- 22:50Speaker 6: saw with the Giants the Giants franchise, he didn't need
- 22:54Speaker 6: to walk into a team that was already winning. He
- 22:57Speaker 6: just needed to see enough pieces in place and believe
- 23:00Speaker 6: that he was the guy that could put them together.
- 23:03Speaker 6: Why can't Rex Ryan look at the Jets the same
- 23:06Speaker 6: way with the young pieces they have and the draft capitals?
- 23:10Speaker 1: He can and he should and he would if he
- 23:13Speaker 1: were the head coach. It'd be interesting, right? He's the
- 23:15Speaker 1: Jets head coach. Harbaugh's the Giants head coach. He used
- 23:18Speaker 1: to be Harbaugh's defensive coordinator. But he's not intimidated by Harbaugh.
- 23:22Speaker 1: And he doesn't care. And he doesn't care if you
- 23:24Speaker 1: make fun of him. And he doesn't care if you
- 23:26Speaker 1: make fun of the organization. He's going to bring them stability.
- 23:29Speaker 1: He's going to bring them. organization he's going to bring
- 23:31Speaker 1: them some toughness and you're right about the gm because
- 23:35Speaker 1: the jets for the first time in a long time
- 23:37Speaker 1: uh they have three of the top 11 picks in
- 23:40Speaker 1: the they control the draft now you can make the
- 23:42Speaker 1: jokes they always control the draft and they blow and
- 23:44Speaker 1: they always blow it and usually you'd be right but
- 23:48Speaker 1: it'd be really hard for anyone to blow what the
- 23:51Speaker 1: jets have in front of them and that is three
- 23:53Speaker 1: of the top 11 or 12 picks in a draft
- 23:56Speaker 1: that is quarterback rich you.
- 23:58Speaker 6: Know Yeah, and you just look at Daramuji's track record
- 24:01Speaker 6: picking in the first round. Kenyon Sadiq has moments at
- 24:05Speaker 6: tight end where he looks like he could be the
- 24:07Speaker 6: next version of some kind of Travis Kelsey at the
- 24:11Speaker 6: tight end position. Omar Cooper, when he comes back from
- 24:13Speaker 6: his injury, Omar Cooper shows flashes at being this next
- 24:18Speaker 6: number one receiver. you ultimately probably have to keep Garrett
- 24:21Speaker 6: Wilson because Garrett Wilson seems like somebody who's going to
- 24:24Speaker 6: want out of town. But you're selling Garrett Wilson on
- 24:27Speaker 6: being the number one in New York and being part
- 24:31Speaker 6: of this long-term plan for the Jets. I think the
- 24:37Speaker 6: running back, Brees Hall. I think Brees Hall is probably
- 24:40Speaker 6: somebody that if he was healthy, you would probably try
- 24:42Speaker 6: to move on from him this trade deadline.
- 24:44Speaker 1: So here's the problem with Rex Ryan getting that job,
- 24:47Speaker 1: I think. Even though it's the Jets, even knowing their reputation,
- 24:55Speaker 1: even knowing what an embarrassment that organization can be, and Lord,
- 24:58Speaker 1: no one knows better than me, okay? That job has
- 25:02Speaker 1: become attractive simply, Taylor, because they have three of the
- 25:06Speaker 1: first 11, 12 picks in an upcoming draft that's supposed
- 25:09Speaker 1: to be a talent-rich draft. It's going to make a
- 25:13Speaker 1: job that is not normally attractive to guys like Mike Tomlin.
- 25:17Speaker 1: It's going to make that job attractive. I'm not saying
- 25:19Speaker 1: Tomlin's going to take the job. I'm not saying that
- 25:22Speaker 1: he's going to be interested in taking that job or
- 25:24Speaker 1: the Jets are going to be interested in taking Mike Tomlin.
- 25:27Speaker 1: But there are enough good players there and enough draft
- 25:30Speaker 1: capital where someone that you're not expecting might say to themselves,
- 25:35Speaker 1: you know what? I'll take a stab at being the
- 25:37Speaker 1: Jets head coach.
- 25:39Speaker 6: The biggest difference between the Jets and the Giants last
- 25:41Speaker 6: offseason when somebody like John Harbaugh comes in, John Harbaugh
- 25:45Speaker 6: was looking at the Giants' structure and the Giants' ownership
- 25:48Speaker 6: and saying, I believe in those guys. I've seen this
- 25:50Speaker 6: team win in the past where you don't really have
- 25:52Speaker 6: that with the Jets and Woody Johnson. But if I'm
- 25:55Speaker 6: a Jets fan today, you cannot sell me on another
- 25:59Speaker 6: young and upcoming coordinator because what have the Jets done today?
- 26:03Speaker 6: in 12 years since rex ryan to make you have
- 26:07Speaker 6: any confidence that they're going to hire somebody good in
- 26:11Speaker 6: in terms of rebuilding your franchise.
- 26:13Speaker 1: No you're right i want established i do uh let's
- 26:16Speaker 1: go to sherman oaks dan has something on this what
- 26:17Speaker 1: do you have dan.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Yeah just to back up your rex ryan support i'm
- 26:21Speaker 3: not sure i agree with it or not but the
- 26:22Speaker 3: jets have won 12 playoff games in their entire existence
- 26:25Speaker 3: as a franchise Rex Ryan is four of those wins.
- 26:30Speaker 1: And one in New England.
- 26:31Speaker 3: He's 33% of their playoff success in the entire franchise's history,
- 26:36Speaker 3: which dates back to 1960. By the way, and you,
- 26:39Speaker 3: I think, alluded to this maybe Monday, Stu, of the
- 26:42Speaker 3: great Jet head coaches. In the entire history of the franchise,
- 26:46Speaker 3: only two head coaches have left with a winning record
- 26:50Speaker 3: with the Jets. And one was Al Groh because he
- 26:53Speaker 3: was 9-7 in It shows the coaching college the next year.
- 26:59Speaker 4: So that's where they are.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Bill Parcells is the only coach in Jets history to
- 27:04Speaker 3: leave with a record above 500.
- 27:06Speaker 4: So even the high points of Rex Ryan.
- 27:09Speaker 3: And others that have taken them to the playoffs, they've
- 27:11Speaker 3: also then ended usually in a miserable fashion.
- 27:15Speaker 1: It's such a great point. Al Groh got a taste
- 27:17Speaker 1: of it, and he got a better taste than most.
- 27:19Speaker 1: He got a winning record and still decided that Virginia
- 27:23Speaker 1: was a better option than coaching the New York Jets.
- 27:29Speaker 1: It's amazing. Oh, yes. But, Dan, do you agree with
- 27:32Speaker 1: what I'm saying here, that this job will be attractive
- 27:36Speaker 1: to people that it normally wouldn't be attractive to just
- 27:39Speaker 1: merely because of their draft captain? Yes, 100%. Yes, right.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Aaron Glenn just felt like the hire when you were
- 27:46Speaker 3: talking about Aaron Glenn understands the Jets. He's lived being
- 27:49Speaker 3: a Jet. And he's going to bring in that culture
- 27:52Speaker 3: from the Lions. And he played for the Jets. And
- 27:55Speaker 3: it always felt like it came back to he played
- 27:57Speaker 3: for the Jets. And that doesn't really work anymore.
- 28:03Speaker 1: But at the beginning, it did work for me. I
- 28:06Speaker 1: was grateful. I loved Aaron Glenn as a player. He
- 28:09Speaker 1: wanted to be the Jets head coach. And shame on
- 28:12Speaker 1: me for going into it thinking that he would know
- 28:14Speaker 1: down distance and the rules.
- 28:15Speaker 7: When he was high-stepping in Tampa on that blocked kick
- 28:23Speaker 7: or whatever it was, we're like, he gets it.
- 28:26Speaker 4: This is what Woody Johnson saw. Yes.
- 28:29Speaker 6: Dan, the best part about Aaron Glenn is his introduction
- 28:32Speaker 6: press conference. He says, I want the Jets to be
- 28:35Speaker 6: something people are proud of. And then somebody asked him
- 28:38Speaker 6: about that at the end of last season. He goes,
- 28:40Speaker 6: I didn't say in year one.
- 28:44Speaker 4: You know, let me finish.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I thought we were going to stop him. That's why
- 28:49Speaker 1: I didn't use the timeouts.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Remember he made Aaron Rodgers fly across country to Tom
- 28:55Speaker 3: that they didn't want him.
- 28:56Speaker 4: Like now I'm like looking at him like, gosh, kind
- 28:58Speaker 4: of feel bad for Aaron Rodgers. That's an Aaron Rodgers.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Rodgers having the last laugh there, Dan.
- 29:02Speaker 3: I mean, The winning percentages here are amazing, like truly.
- 29:07Speaker 3: And by the way, from Rex Ryan, it gets worse.
- 29:09Speaker 3: 479 for Rex. Mangini, by the way, is winning percentage, 479.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Then it was 375 Todd Bowles, Adam Gase, 281, Salah, 357,
- 29:18Speaker 3: and Aaron Glenn right now a winning percentage of 176.
- 29:22Speaker 1: But, Dan, the expectations are so low there that when
- 29:25Speaker 1: Rex Ryan strolls through New York and merely gets you
- 29:29Speaker 1: to two AFC championship games with Mark Sanchez, you hold
- 29:33Speaker 1: him up as the greatest coach in franchise history because
- 29:36Speaker 1: he is.
- 29:36Speaker 6: Dan, do you know how low the expectations are? are
- 29:40Speaker 6: for the new york jets how low i was doing
- 29:42Speaker 6: i was doing this exercise before where i was power
- 29:45Speaker 6: ranking the jets head coaches since 2001 Todd Bowles is
- 29:49Speaker 6: on the Mount Rushmore.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Al Groh should be there.
- 29:54Speaker 6: Since 2001.
- 29:54Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 29:56Speaker 6: So I had Rex Ryan was my clear number one.
- 29:59Speaker 6: Herm Edwards was number two. Eric Mangini was three. Todd
- 30:03Speaker 6: Bowles was four. Robert Sala was five. Adam Gase was six.
- 30:08Speaker 6: Gase of the franchise. And then Aaron Glenn, the rear.
- 30:13Speaker 1: But they have something that good coaches would want. That's
- 30:16Speaker 1: draft capital.
- 30:17Speaker 6: The potential of Arch Manning.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Yes. Just three first-round draft picks. I mean, just don't
- 30:24Speaker 1: screw it up.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Herm made the playoffs.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Three times in his five seasons and couldn't finish.
- 30:32Speaker 1: He's the greatest coach in franchise history, and I'm including
- 30:35Speaker 1: Weeb Eubank who won a Super Bowl. Perhaps Dabo Sweeney
- 30:48Speaker 1: should use Express Pros. He'll need a job soon, I think. What, Taylor?
- 30:54Speaker 1: Why are you shaking your head there?
- 30:56Speaker 6: My blood is boiling if I was a Clemson Tiger fan,
- 30:59Speaker 6: because it feels like Dabo Sweeney is just daring Clemson
- 31:03Speaker 6: to fire him. They had a lifeless performance this past
- 31:07Speaker 6: week at home against Virginia Tech. And I have a
- 31:10Speaker 6: sound here. This podcast Things in press conferences can be long.
- 31:14Speaker 6: A press conference can be long. Things can be taken
- 31:16Speaker 6: out of context. But when you're having the season that
- 31:19Speaker 6: Dabo Sweeney is having, this is the last thing you
- 31:23Speaker 6: want to hear your head coach talking about and taking
- 31:26Speaker 6: some great pride in.
- 31:27Speaker 5: I am doing great in my fantasy team. In my
- 31:30Speaker 5: fantasy life, I'm really in first place. I'm kicking my...
- 31:35Speaker 5: I'm winning butt. I'm kicking some butt in that.
- 31:38Speaker 2: But.
- 31:41Speaker 5: Maybe I should retire and be a full-time fantasy guy.
- 31:44Speaker 5: I made a great draft pickup. I got some guy
- 31:46Speaker 5: named Tucker from the Raiders, and he.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Is killing it.
- 31:52Speaker 5: He's making hay every week. I didn't even know who
- 31:54Speaker 5: he was. So it's like my big Sweeney family, and
- 31:58Speaker 5: they wouldn't let me in it. It's the first year
- 32:01Speaker 5: they've let me be in it. And I'm like, well,
- 32:03Speaker 5: why can't I be in it? Well, you don't really
- 32:04Speaker 5: know what you're doing. They finally let me in it. Yeah, yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 5: I'm first place in the league.
- 32:10Speaker 1: He is begging to get fired. Dabo Swinney has stopped caring.
- 32:16Speaker 6: Stu, when you listen to that coach, you're like, oh,
- 32:18Speaker 6: this coach must be ranked in the top 10. I
- 32:21Speaker 6: don't need to hear him talking about his fantasy football
- 32:23Speaker 6: team when Clemson is 4-3. They lost to Virginia Tech.
- 32:27Speaker 6: They got blown out by Miami. They lost to LSU.
- 32:31Speaker 6: They got blown out. They should have lost to North
- 32:33Speaker 6: Carolina before a weather delay in that game.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 32:36Speaker 1: What I hear is a guy who is secure with
- 32:38Speaker 1: his legacy. He knows he's on the way out. He's
- 32:41Speaker 1: won a national championship. He's been to the playoffs many times.
- 32:45Speaker 1: They've been one of the best programs since Dabo has
- 32:47Speaker 1: been there. Granted, it's been bad the last couple of years, okay?
- 32:50Speaker 1: I understand that. But it sounds like a guy who
- 32:53Speaker 1: was secure with his legacy at Clemson and is also
- 32:56Speaker 1: okay with the idea of him not being at Clemson
- 32:59Speaker 1: anymore after this season and just playing fantasy football with
- 33:03Speaker 1: his family. And I have to be honest about fantasy football.
- 33:06Speaker 1: You could have a million things crumbling around you in
- 33:09Speaker 1: your life, but if your fantasy football team is good
- 33:12Speaker 1: and you picked up Tucker– Everything changes. You go from
- 33:16Speaker 1: being a misery to the happiest guy on the planet.
- 33:19Speaker 1: I mean, it feels great.
- 33:20Speaker 6: Now I'm wondering if Dabo Sweeney getting into his family's
- 33:24Speaker 6: fantasy football league has anything to do with Clemson struggling
- 33:27Speaker 6: this year, where it's like you look at Mike Tomlin's
- 33:30Speaker 6: record before and after he discovered Minecraft. You might be
- 33:34Speaker 6: seeing the same nosedive in success. Stu, Clemson at Florida
- 33:40Speaker 6: State this week. Florida State's a six and a half
- 33:42Speaker 6: point favorite.
- 33:42Speaker 8: Wow.
- 33:43Speaker 6: I think with Mike Norvell and Dabo Sweeney, just sign
- 33:46Speaker 6: this up as a pink slip game. Whoever loses, a
- 33:49Speaker 6: loser leaves town game.
- 33:50Speaker 1: So how does that work out? So after the game,
- 33:53Speaker 1: they lose, they do the postgame presser, they go back
- 33:56Speaker 1: to their office, and what's sitting there is just a
- 33:59Speaker 1: pink slip.
- 34:00Speaker 6: So you know how in rivalry games, the trophy is
- 34:02Speaker 6: on the field?
- 34:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 34:03Speaker 6: And then the winning team goes to get the trophy
- 34:05Speaker 6: after that game?
- 34:06Speaker 1: Right, the losing coach goes to get his pink slip?
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yes.
- 34:08Speaker 6: So I think instead of meeting at midfield for a handshake, Right.
- 34:13Speaker 6: the other coach receives a pink slip and the other
- 34:16Speaker 6: coach is the one who hands the pink slip.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Okay. So if Clemson loses Norvell, rather than shaking Dabo's hand,
- 34:22Speaker 1: he just hands him a pink slip. Yes. I could
- 34:26Speaker 1: see Dabo at Florida state next year. And Norvell at Clemson,
- 34:29Speaker 1: if I'm being honest. Yes. How about that?
- 34:31Speaker 6: Like a trading places. Just two coaches that need different sceneries.
- 34:35Speaker 7: Yes.
- 34:35Speaker 1: And at this point, just based on the sound that
- 34:37Speaker 1: I just heard, if they presented that to Dabo this week, hey,
- 34:40Speaker 1: you're going to coach Florida State. Norvell's going to coach
- 34:42Speaker 1: your team. He'd be like, all right, I'm in. That
- 34:45Speaker 1: was my Dabo.
- 34:47Speaker 6: Stu, there are 138 teams now at the FBS level
- 34:51Speaker 6: in college football.
- 34:52Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 34:53Speaker 6: Where do you think Clemson ranks out of 138 in
- 34:56Speaker 6: terms of passing touchdowns this season?
- 34:59Speaker 1: I'm going to say, I don't know, 62.
- 35:02Speaker 2: 138.
- 35:02Speaker 6: What? They are behind Air Force and Army, who are
- 35:08Speaker 6: still stuck in the 1950s running the option.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Wait. Army has more, you're saying?
- 35:17Speaker 6: Army has three passing touchdowns this season.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 35:20Speaker 6: Clemson has two.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Wow. That has to be a record for Army, no?
- 35:25Speaker 6: Three passing touchdowns? They're really airing it out this year.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Who's that quarterback?
- 35:30Speaker 6: It's like a Hellams or something. I watch Army kind
- 35:32Speaker 6: of fairly regularly.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Get him to Clemson.
- 35:35Speaker 6: You'd be an upgrade over Tate Reynolds and Visnia.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Do you think that Dabo will be a coach that
- 35:41Speaker 1: will be coveted by other universities?
- 35:43Speaker 2: No.
- 35:43Speaker 1: If indeed he is let go by Clemson.
- 35:46Speaker 6: In terms of programs that are at Clemson's level?
- 35:48Speaker 1: I'm not saying upper echelon, kind of like the Lincoln-Riley
- 35:51Speaker 1: discussion we've had, where maybe he goes to, I don't know,
- 35:53Speaker 1: a Baylor or something like that.
- 35:55Speaker 2: No.
- 35:56Speaker 6: So the difference there is Lincoln-Riley embraces the transfer portal.
- 36:01Speaker 6: Lincoln-Riley at least is bringing one of the most effective
- 36:05Speaker 6: offenses in the country. I know they struggled against Wisconsin
- 36:07Speaker 6: pretty mightily, but at least you have that fallback with
- 36:11Speaker 6: Lincoln-Riley that, You're going to most likely have a quarterback
- 36:13Speaker 6: that's going to be in Heisman contention. You're going to
- 36:15Speaker 6: have an offense that puts up points. For whatever reason,
- 36:18Speaker 6: Lincoln Riley cannot figure out the defensive side of the ball.
- 36:21Speaker 6: He rotates defensive coordinators. He brings in defensive coordinators that
- 36:25Speaker 6: had success elsewhere. He can't get that. Dabo Sweeney has
- 36:29Speaker 6: won the national championships. Dabo Sweeney goes to his office,
- 36:32Speaker 6: kicks his feet up, and says, if you guys don't
- 36:35Speaker 6: like the way I'm doing this without embracing the transfer portal,
- 36:38Speaker 6: I'm going to do this my way of recruiting players.
- 36:40Speaker 6: high school players and God's name, image, and likeness. I
- 36:44Speaker 6: don't really care because I have my national champions to
- 36:46Speaker 6: fall back on. I think Lincoln Riley at the very
- 36:49Speaker 6: least still has the hunger to be one of the
- 36:52Speaker 6: top coaches in college football. Whereas, whereas Dabo Sweeney's been there,
- 36:56Speaker 6: done that. He's going to do things his way. He's
- 36:59Speaker 6: stuck in trying to win college football games in 2017.
- 37:02Speaker 6: All right.
- 37:03Speaker 1: That was your Dabo impersonation. I heard it. I heard
- 37:05Speaker 1: it creep in there.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Taylor put this on the poll before we break for
- 37:09Speaker 1: our two. Put it on the poll. That's still got
- 37:12Speaker 1: 790 on X. Picking up the right fantasy football free agent.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Does it make all your other problems go away? We're
- 37:22Speaker 1: back after this. Very excited to have Bob Costas coming
- 37:25Speaker 1: on the radio show. Taylor, are you excited for Costas?
- 37:28Speaker 1: This is special. What a special day. Bob Costas, one
- 37:31Speaker 1: of the all-time great broadcasters, is going to join us
- 37:34Speaker 1: here in about 15 minutes.
- 37:36Speaker 6: You wouldn't want Bob Costas on any other day besides
- 37:39Speaker 6: a day after a great World Series game.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Yes. We'll talk baseball with him. Poor Dan Beyer, three
- 37:46Speaker 1: outs away from winning a World Series. But let's talk J.J.
- 37:50Speaker 1: McCarthy here. What is going on here with J.J. McCarthy?
- 37:54Speaker 1: and him not wearing eye black against the Texans.
- 37:56Speaker 6: So a lot of fans noticed this when J.J. McCarthy
- 37:59Speaker 6: took the field against the Texans. They were like, he
- 38:01Speaker 6: had this signature look when he was at Michigan overdoing
- 38:05Speaker 6: the eye black, and he did not have it against
- 38:09Speaker 6: the Texans. And people were like, what is he doing?
- 38:11Speaker 6: Apparently the reason why he didn't wear eye black against
- 38:14Speaker 6: the Texans is because the quarterback for the Texans, C.J. Shroud,
- 38:18Speaker 6: played at Ohio State, and this is a tradition for J.J.
- 38:22Speaker 1: McCarthy.
- 38:23Speaker 6: Going back to his Michigan days, rooted in his hatred
- 38:26Speaker 6: for Ohio State, he wants, he doesn't wear eye black
- 38:31Speaker 6: against former Ohio State quarterbacks. because he wants them to
- 38:35Speaker 6: look him directly in the eyes.
- 38:37Speaker 1: What a weird guy. This J.J. McCarthy, man. He's got
- 38:42Speaker 1: some stones for a guy who hasn't done a whole
- 38:44Speaker 1: lot in the NFL. So J.J.
- 38:46Speaker 6: McCarthy grew up a diehard Ohio State fan, and he
- 38:50Speaker 6: claims that Ryan Day promised to not accept another quarterback's
- 38:53Speaker 6: commitment before the end of the summer of 2019, but
- 38:56Speaker 6: Day accepted Kyle McCord's commitment in April, and McCarthy felt betrayed.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Yes.
- 39:02Speaker 6: So he deliberately... During his time in Ann Arbor, stop
- 39:06Speaker 6: wearing eye black against Ohio State.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 39:09Speaker 6: Because he wanted them to see him clearly.
- 39:11Speaker 1: So Ryan Day could look him right in the eye.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:14Speaker 1: And you're like J.J.
- 39:15Speaker 6: McCarthy, like he has a screw loose. But the record
- 39:19Speaker 6: kind of backs it up where he was three and
- 39:20Speaker 6: oh against Ohio State at Michigan. And then nobody really
- 39:25Speaker 6: gave them a chance this week against the Texans to
- 39:28Speaker 6: where now I'm starting to want am I too high
- 39:32Speaker 6: on J.J.
- 39:32Speaker 1: McCarthy?
- 39:33Speaker 6: Because can J.J. McCarthy bottle up this hatred every week,
- 39:37Speaker 6: the hatred that he has for Ohio State?
- 39:39Speaker 1: What I'm starting to wonder is if the eye black
- 39:42Speaker 1: is getting in the way.
- 39:45Speaker 6: Stu, that is such a great point.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Because J.J.
- 39:48Speaker 6: McCarthy- in that game against the Texans, made throws that
- 39:53Speaker 6: we have not seen him even come close to completing.
- 39:57Speaker 1: And what wasn't he wearing?
- 39:59Speaker 4: Eye black.
- 39:59Speaker 1: And when he beat Michigan three times, what wasn't he wearing?
- 40:02Speaker 6: Eye black.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Why is he wearing eye black against anyone then?
- 40:07Speaker 6: But do you have concerns if, say he goes back
- 40:11Speaker 6: to wearing the eye black, and maybe the eye black's
- 40:13Speaker 6: not the issue.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:14Speaker 6: He has to find a way to bottle up his
- 40:16Speaker 6: hatred for Ohio State. It's almost like the water boy.
- 40:19Speaker 6: Remember Bobby Boucher? He would envision the guy who talked
- 40:24Speaker 6: crap about his mom every time, even if it wasn't
- 40:27Speaker 6: going against that.
- 40:28Speaker 1: He would do that to get himself to a very
- 40:30Speaker 1: angry place where he would tear that guy's head off.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Like J.J. McCarthy.
- 40:35Speaker 6: I know the Giants have a bye this week, but
- 40:38Speaker 6: when J.J. McCarthy comes out of the next bye week,
- 40:41Speaker 6: And it's against the Eagles Sunday, November 8th game.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Devonta Smith? No, he's Alabama. I'm thinking of the Ohio
- 40:49Speaker 1: State guy who's on that team.
- 40:51Speaker 6: I think when he sees Nick Sirianni, he just has
- 40:54Speaker 6: to imagine it's Ryan Day.
- 40:58Speaker 1: So what you're saying, in the spirit of the water boy,
- 41:02Speaker 1: Bobby Boucher, is that J.J. McCarthy needs to go into
- 41:06Speaker 1: every game envisioning, imagining that the opposing team's head coach
- 41:11Speaker 1: is Ryan Day. He's always playing against Ryan Day.
- 41:14Speaker 6: It's where he's had the most success in his career.
- 41:19Speaker 1: And the opposing quarterback is always CJ Stroud. Yes.
- 41:22Speaker 6: Stu JJ McCarthy was basically left for dead in Minnesota
- 41:27Speaker 6: where everybody wrote him off. And even when he comes
- 41:30Speaker 6: to the giants, it's like, Oh, they have Jameis Winston. Will,
- 41:33Speaker 6: will he get a chance? And then he gets a
- 41:35Speaker 6: chance on Sunday. And he looked like a completely different quarterback.
- 41:40Speaker 6: One that I think that, like, best case scenario, when
- 41:43Speaker 6: the Vikings drafted him out of Michigan, that was the
- 41:46Speaker 6: quarterback they envisioned having.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Yes. Literally. He looked like a different quarterback with no
- 41:51Speaker 1: eye black. No eye black. A totally different person with
- 41:54Speaker 1: the eye black. It's too much. Even when he wears it,
- 41:58Speaker 1: if he wants to go back to it, that's fine.
- 41:59Speaker 1: I'd never go back to it again. I'm with you.
- 42:02Speaker 1: I would imagine every coach to be Ryan Day and
- 42:04Speaker 1: every quarterback to be CJ Stroud and every week to
- 42:08Speaker 1: be Michigan and Ohio State. That's what I would do
- 42:10Speaker 1: to get myself to an angry place if I'm JJ McCarthy.
- 42:14Speaker 1: If he goes back to it though, and he shouldn't,
- 42:16Speaker 1: but if he does, he's got to tone it down.
- 42:18Speaker 1: He just, just put one line under one eye, one
- 42:22Speaker 1: line under the other eye and just go play football, man.
- 42:25Speaker 6: When did that start becoming a trend with, with people
- 42:28Speaker 6: in football where it used to be like the strips
- 42:30Speaker 6: or remember the strips.
- 42:31Speaker 1: That you would put under course.
- 42:32Speaker 6: And then the giants quarterback room is like the prime
- 42:36Speaker 6: example for eye black, where you have JJ McCarthy overdoing
- 42:39Speaker 6: it on under both eyes. And then Jackson dart has the, uh,
- 42:42Speaker 6: The Star Wars Scar Eye Black.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Just be a quarterback.
- 42:46Speaker 6: Just be a quarterback. It feels like until you win
- 42:50Speaker 6: a Super Bowl, just go two strips if you really
- 42:53Speaker 6: need Eye Black.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Put it on the poll. If you're 3-0 against Michigan
- 42:57Speaker 1: without the Eye Black, should you ever go back to
- 42:59Speaker 1: the Eye Black again? That feels like that should come
- 43:02Speaker 1: back 100%. Why would you? I mean, why would you
- 43:06Speaker 1: go back to it? I know he wants to look intimidating.
- 43:09Speaker 1: I know he's a different person off the field than
- 43:11Speaker 1: he is. on the field and he gets himself to
- 43:13Speaker 1: a crazy place but it seems like getting himself to
- 43:16Speaker 1: a crazy place ain't working just get yourself to a
- 43:19Speaker 1: crazy place where you think you're playing Ohio State every
- 43:22Speaker 1: weekend and do away with the eye black that's it
- 43:25Speaker 1: I think that's the trick for JJ McCarthy. I think
- 43:27Speaker 1: the Giants are going to win that division, Taylor. I
- 43:29Speaker 1: really do. I mean.
- 43:30Speaker 6: Stu, after watching the Monday night football game against the
- 43:33Speaker 6: Eagles Cowboys.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Bad teams.
- 43:35Speaker 6: I feel even better about the Giants. Like, I think
- 43:38Speaker 6: the Giants, the magic number, you're looking at the NFC
- 43:42Speaker 6: East standings right now. It feels like the Giants magic
- 43:47Speaker 6: number is going to be getting to nine wins.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Yes.
- 43:50Speaker 6: And then if you get to nine wins, the Cowboys
- 43:53Speaker 6: have to one up you because you have the tiebreaker
- 43:56Speaker 6: with them as it currently stands.
- 43:58Speaker 1: And if you look at the Cowboys schedule, it's hard
- 43:59Speaker 1: to imagine them getting to 10 wins. It really is.
- 44:02Speaker 1: I mean, it's tricky. It's a difficult schedule.
- 44:04Speaker 6: The problem that you run into, it's hard to imagine
- 44:06Speaker 6: any team in that division getting to 10 wins.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Well, you thought it would be the Eagles. Yes.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Yes.
- 44:11Speaker 6: And somehow the team that you feel the most confident
- 44:14Speaker 6: about right now is John Harbaugh and just the culture
- 44:18Speaker 6: that he brings and the stability that he brings to
- 44:20Speaker 6: New York.
- 44:21Speaker 1: What's amazing about this division, and it's amazing because the
- 44:24Speaker 1: Cowboys have the most stability at quarterback, at least for
- 44:26Speaker 1: right now. But I don't think the Giants, once Jackson
- 44:29Speaker 1: Dart went down, ever anticipated being in a position where
- 44:32Speaker 1: they might have the second best quarterback in that division.
- 44:37Speaker 1: And yet here we are. And now if you take
- 44:39Speaker 1: off the eye black, he might be better than Dak Prescott.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I mean, it's incredible. And all the people, I said
- 44:45Speaker 1: this yesterday, who wanted to run Joe Shane out of town,
- 44:48Speaker 1: guess what? He saved your season. He picked up the phone,
- 44:51Speaker 1: he called the quarterback whisperer, and gave him a fifth-round
- 44:55Speaker 1: pick to get a quarterback who was saving your season.
- 44:59Speaker 6: So I know Cam Scadaboo had a little revival in
- 45:01Speaker 6: the game against the Texans, but if I'm Joe Shane today,
- 45:04Speaker 6: I'm getting on the phone. Get Jonathan Taylor there, get
- 45:06Speaker 6: Tony Pollard there, strengthen that running back room, and go
- 45:10Speaker 6: for it.
- 45:10Speaker 1: The Colts are trading everyone, and guys are asking out.
- 45:13Speaker 1: You see that? Josh Downs. Guys who they're not even
- 45:15Speaker 1: wanting to trade are saying, hey, we want out of here.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Jonathan Taylor hasn't done it yet, but he will. or
- 45:21Speaker 1: let his agent do the talking for him, which is
- 45:24Speaker 1: probably the better route for Jonathan Taylor. So interesting. J.J. McCarthy.
- 45:31Speaker 1: never did I think we would have a discussion about
- 45:33Speaker 1: not wearing eye black, but here we are.

- 45:58Speaker 1: Our thanks to Bob Costas for joining us in that
- 46:01Speaker 1: last segment. What a thrill to have him on. Taylor,
- 46:04Speaker 1: I am told here, now you know I'm not paying
- 46:06Speaker 1: attention to soccer, okay? But I am told there was
- 46:10Speaker 1: a monster upset, possibly the biggest upset in the history
- 46:13Speaker 1: of the sport, not just that sport, any sport. What
- 46:16Speaker 1: the hell happened in soccer? Because you don't normally see
- 46:19Speaker 1: these when a, you know, Davey versus Goliath and the
- 46:23Speaker 1: monster doesn't win. I mean, so what happened here?
- 46:25Speaker 6: So the David versus Goliath example is the best example
- 46:29Speaker 6: you could have given, Stu.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Why did I make him Davey?
- 46:31Speaker 4: Davey Crockett.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Davey Johnson.
- 46:35Speaker 6: So Arsenal in the EFL Cup. The defending Premier League
- 46:40Speaker 6: champions went up against Fleetwood Town.
- 46:43Speaker 5: Yes.
- 46:44Speaker 6: And Fleetwood Town scores early to go up 1-0.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Right. Shocking everyone.
- 46:49Speaker 6: Arsenal equalizes 1-1.
- 46:51Speaker 5: Ah.
- 46:52Speaker 6: And then it goes to penalties, and Fleetwood Town wins
- 46:55Speaker 6: on penalties to advance. And just to show the comparison,
- 47:00Speaker 6: Arsenal's roster is worth $ 1. 5 billion.
- 47:04Speaker 1: So Arsenal is spending $ 1. 5 billion on its soccer team,
- 47:09Speaker 1: on the players who play for that soccer team. Yes.
- 47:11Speaker 6: And they're the defending Premier League champions.
- 47:13Speaker 1: So they're the Dodgers, essentially. Yes.
- 47:16Speaker 6: And Fleetwood Town's roster?
- 47:17Speaker 5: Yes.
- 47:18Speaker 6: Three million dollars.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Get out of here. That's an upset. I mean, are
- 47:23Speaker 1: they in the same league? I don't know. I don't
- 47:25Speaker 1: get it. So the exhibition match. What was this?
- 47:28Speaker 6: So the friendly. I mean, OK, the EFL Cup, the
- 47:32Speaker 6: Caribou Cup. So it features 92 teams from England's top
- 47:36Speaker 6: four professional divisions. The Premier League has 20 teams. The
- 47:40Speaker 6: next level is the championship, which is 24 teams. The
- 47:43Speaker 6: next level is League 1, 24 teams. The next level,
- 47:47Speaker 6: the last level, is League 2, 24 teams. So all
- 47:51Speaker 6: 92 clubs are eligible for the EFL Cup. But the
- 47:54Speaker 6: Premier League teams enter in the later rounds because they
- 47:57Speaker 6: don't want, you know, the Manchester Uniteds, the Liverpools having
- 48:00Speaker 6: to go up against these Joe Schmoes. But Fleetwood Town
- 48:04Speaker 6: advanced to face Arsenal when Arsenal's getting into the tournament.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 48:10Speaker 6: And then they knocked them out in front of their
- 48:12Speaker 6: stadium of just 5,000 people.
- 48:14Speaker 1: So they keep— wow. So they keep— it was a home game?
- 48:17Speaker 6: It was a home match for Fleetwood Town. I think they—
- 48:20Speaker 6: I think once they have the matchups, it's just random.
- 48:23Speaker 6: Who's the home team in it.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Okay. So this is confusing to me. So they're all
- 48:28Speaker 1: in the same league, but they keep the better teams
- 48:31Speaker 1: around because they want the big brands in the later rounds.
- 48:34Speaker 1: They don't want to risk an upset here. Right.
- 48:36Speaker 6: They're all, they're all in the same tournament. So they're
- 48:39Speaker 6: not all in the same leagues like Fleetwood town and
- 48:41Speaker 6: Arsenal would never play each other in the regular season.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 48:45Speaker 6: They would only play each other in this cup. Like,
- 48:48Speaker 6: The NFL equivalent, I have an NFL equivalent to it,
- 48:51Speaker 6: to put this in football.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Terms for you. Okay, thank you.
- 48:54Speaker 6: Let's say the NFL is the Premier League.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Some would say we're discussing football, but anyway, go ahead.
- 49:01Speaker 6: So let's say the NFL is the Premier League.
- 49:03Speaker 1: Okay.
- 49:04Speaker 6: College football, D1 football, is the championship.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 49:08Speaker 6: The second division.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 49:10Speaker 6: D2 football is League One.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 49:12Speaker 6: The third division. D3 football... is League Two, the fourth division.
- 49:18Speaker 6: Arsenal losing to Fleetwood Township is the equivalent in this
- 49:21Speaker 6: scenario to the defending Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks,
- 49:26Speaker 6: losing to a sub-500 D3 team.
- 49:27Speaker 2: What?
- 49:27Speaker 7: Yes.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Get out of here.
- 49:33Speaker 6: Like before the match, I think the pre-match odds, Arsenal
- 49:37Speaker 6: to advance was like minus $ 2, 000.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 49:40Speaker 6: So you have to bet $ 2, 000 just to win $ 100 back.
- 49:43Speaker 6: And then Fleetwood Town on the money line was like
- 49:45Speaker 6: plus $ 3, 000. All right.
- 49:47Speaker 1: So this would be like the Dodgers losing to a
- 49:49Speaker 1: single A. Single A. Yes. Are you kidding me?
- 49:53Speaker 6: But it would be like.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Wait, so how did Fleetwood get home field advantage here?
- 49:57Speaker 1: I don't get it. If you want Arsenal to advance
- 49:59Speaker 1: and you don't want to run the risk of them
- 50:01Speaker 1: losing a match like they did to Fleetwood Town, why
- 50:05Speaker 1: is Arsenal not playing at home? I mean.
- 50:07Speaker 6: So I'm pretty sure in the EFL Cup or the
- 50:10Speaker 6: Caribou Cup, they draw teams to see what the matchups are.
- 50:14Speaker 6: So once you get to, like, the round of 16,
- 50:16Speaker 6: they'll have a day where it's just announcing the upcoming
- 50:19Speaker 6: matchups where they pull out of, like, a... a lottery thing.
- 50:23Speaker 6: And it's like the first team is Arsenal. And then
- 50:25Speaker 6: the second team and the second team, I guess, or
- 50:28Speaker 6: the first team in this scenario, whatever team is, is
- 50:31Speaker 6: drawn first or second is going to be the designated
- 50:33Speaker 6: home team.
- 50:34Speaker 8: Right?
- 50:34Speaker 6: So Fleetwood town was just the designated home team in
- 50:37Speaker 6: this scenario. So, And, Stu, the scenes from Fleetwood Town,
- 50:43Speaker 6: their crowd was buzzing. They're storming the field after a.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Game, basically. Yes, well, they should. They just beat the Yankees.
- 50:49Speaker 1: I mean, they beat the Mets. And I say the
- 50:53Speaker 1: Mets only because the Mets spend a billion dollars. They're
- 50:55Speaker 1: not very good, just like Arsenal.
- 50:57Speaker 6: The competition is single elimination, so it gets to the
- 51:01Speaker 6: scenario where Some of these teams have to prioritize, like,
- 51:04Speaker 6: do we want to focus on our Premier League season,
- 51:08Speaker 6: like Arsenal trying to defend their title from last year,
- 51:12Speaker 6: or do we want to put out a strong team?
- 51:14Speaker 6: By all accounts, Arsenal did put out a pretty strong
- 51:16Speaker 6: team when they went to Fleetwood Town. Every time I
- 51:19Speaker 6: hear Fleetwood Town, I just think of Fleetwood Mac.
- 51:21Speaker 1: So do I, or Tommy Fleetwood, yes.
- 51:23Speaker 3: Wow.
- 51:26Speaker 1: So Fleetwood's just a town that put together their best
- 51:28Speaker 1: soccer players, essentially.
- 51:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 51:32Speaker 6: It's like the example of, like, imagine, like, again, the
- 51:37Speaker 6: minor league example is great. Like, if I had to
- 51:39Speaker 6: guess this Fleetwood town, very few players on that team
- 51:43Speaker 6: are playing soccer, like, full-time professionally. Like, I think they're
- 51:47Speaker 6: driving Uber on the side. They're doing DoorDash on the side,
- 51:50Speaker 6: whatever the English equivalents of those are.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Yes.
- 51:53Speaker 6: I guess they have... Do they have DoorDash?
- 51:55Speaker 1: Well, I don't know. It's a good question.
- 51:57Speaker 6: They definitely have Uber.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 51:59Speaker 6: Ricardo just said they have DoorDash. He said it so
- 52:01Speaker 6: confidently that I'm now hoping they don't have DoorDash.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Okay, but you're saying it's like the early 1900s where,
- 52:07Speaker 1: you know, Babe Ruth would play baseball and then to
- 52:09Speaker 1: make ends meet, he would be a milkman.
- 52:11Speaker 6: His shift at the sawmill, yes.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Can we get someone from Fleetwood Town on? Anyone.
- 52:18Speaker 6: We want to crown them our champions, our soccer champions.
- 52:21Speaker 1: I'm rooting for them. I'm a soccer fan now. Fleetwood
- 52:24Speaker 1: Town has made me a soccer fan. I mean, I
- 52:27Speaker 1: love the beautiful game.
- 52:31Speaker 6: Unreal upset.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Wait, so did they get Arsenal's best? Did their best
- 52:35Speaker 1: players play, or did Arsenal take Fleetwood Town too lightly
- 52:39Speaker 1: and put in a bunch of scrubs? Which it doesn't matter,
- 52:41Speaker 1: by the way. Their scrubs are probably better than anyone
- 52:44Speaker 1: on Fleetwood Town.
- 52:45Speaker 6: Yeah, so Fleetwood is currently 18th in the fourth level
- 52:48Speaker 6: of English soccer. They're not a good team even for
- 52:52Speaker 6: their standards where they're playing. My guess is Arsenal held
- 52:58Speaker 6: back a couple of punches in their starting lineup where
- 53:02Speaker 6: you wouldn't expect them to put out their best squad.
- 53:05Speaker 6: They're going up against the Manchester Uniteds or the Manchester Citys.
- 53:09Speaker 6: Because there's never really been a great example of them
- 53:13Speaker 6: not needing to. And then you have scenes like last
- 53:17Speaker 6: night in the English soccer, man.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Yeah, this is, listen, there's a lesson to be learned here.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Don't take Fleetwood Town lightly. Do you feel like Fleetwood Town,
- 53:27Speaker 1: much like the Knicks where you said, where I said,
- 53:30Speaker 1: I'm good with the Knicks never winning a championship again.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Do you think the fans of Fleetwood Town and the
- 53:35Speaker 1: team are okay if they never win another soccer game
- 53:38Speaker 1: again because they beat Arsenal?
- 53:39Speaker 6: They have this for the rest of their lives. I
- 53:43Speaker 6: was thinking about this, too, when I'm watching Fleetwood Town,
- 53:45Speaker 6: because their supporters were, like, fully invested into this, where
- 53:49Speaker 6: it's like, I don't understand the English soccer fandom, where
- 53:55Speaker 6: how do you grow up to be a Fleetwood Town fan?
- 53:59Speaker 1: Well, you have no choice. I mean... But, like, you.
- 54:02Speaker 6: Would have to imagine. It would be like us trying to, like, say, oh,
- 54:06Speaker 6: I'm not a Dodger fan. I'm a Chihuahua fan, like
- 54:11Speaker 6: a single-A team. Like, how do you even find those
- 54:13Speaker 6: games on TV? Just because you grew up in the area,
- 54:15Speaker 6: that's the team you support. And I guess you're just
- 54:18Speaker 6: hoping for the off chance that one day they could
- 54:21Speaker 6: get promoted.
- 54:22Speaker 1: I guess. Where is Fleetwood Town? Do we know? I mean.
- 54:26Speaker 6: It's in Lancaster.
- 54:28Speaker 1: All right.
- 54:29Speaker 6: Lancashire. Say it on the mic. I don't know how
- 54:31Speaker 6: to say that. Lancashire, I think. It's an English name. Yeah,
- 54:36Speaker 6: it looks like Lancashire, but it's definitely not Lancashire.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Well, it could be Lancashire. We have no idea. I
- 54:43Speaker 1: want to make a trip there. I want to do
- 54:47Speaker 1: a live remote from their next game. So they advance
- 54:49Speaker 1: and Arsenal is done. It's the biggest upset in the
- 54:51Speaker 1: history of the sport.
- 54:52Speaker 6: Yeah, cup set.
- 54:56Speaker 1: This is like the United States hockey team beating the Russians, correct?
- 55:01Speaker 6: Yeah, where no matter who Fleetwood Town plays in the
- 55:04Speaker 6: next round, like to your point earlier, their fans, they
- 55:08Speaker 6: have it made. They'll always have this one night in October.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Right, but do you think there's someone doing afternoon drive
- 55:14Speaker 1: in Fleetwood Town?
- 55:16Speaker 6: Oh, they're buzzing today. The phone lines are open. They're
- 55:19Speaker 6: getting 30 shares.
- 55:20Speaker 1: I know, but now there's expectations. And congratulations to the
- 55:23Speaker 1: guys getting 30 shares in Fleetwood Town. Lancaster, I think.
- 55:26Speaker 1: I have no idea. but congratulations to those guys. Big day,
- 55:30Speaker 1: biggest day in the history of sports radio there. I guarantee.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Do you think Taylor? Because their drive is afternoon drive host. Okay.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Celebrate when things are going well and complain when they're not.
- 55:41Speaker 1: If God forbid. Fleetwood Town is down 4-0 in their
- 55:46Speaker 1: next match. Do you think the afternoon drive hosts are
- 55:49Speaker 1: going to let them hear it? I mean.
- 55:51Speaker 6: I don't think you can. I think your players are
- 55:52Speaker 6: still drunk on the title. It's like Mikkel Bridges coming
- 55:55Speaker 6: back for the start of this Knicks season.
- 55:57Speaker 1: Yeah, but we beat Arsenal. I mean, you fire the manager,
- 56:00Speaker 1: what do you do there? You have to do something
- 56:01Speaker 1: if you're on sports radio.
- 56:03Speaker 6: Soccer, they'll fire a manager at a whim just because
- 56:07Speaker 6: they want to fire a manager that day. Would you
- 56:10Speaker 6: rather be... a host in Fleetwood town today, or would
- 56:15Speaker 6: you rather be a host in London where Arsenal plays?
- 56:18Speaker 6: Because even if they weren't playing their, their best squad, right?
- 56:22Speaker 6: Like those hosts are, are ripping Arsenal today.
- 56:25Speaker 1: Wow. That's a great question. I mean, you get more
- 56:31Speaker 1: calls if you're doing the show in Arsenal, you know,
- 56:35Speaker 1: celebrations don't tend to, to give you a lot of calls,
- 56:38Speaker 1: but firing a coach and questioning a team and their heart,
- 56:42Speaker 1: and their character, and if they played their best players,
- 56:45Speaker 1: and if they took a team lightly. Listen, the guys
- 56:49Speaker 1: in Fleetwood, all right, they're getting 20 shares. The guys
- 56:52Speaker 1: who do radio, where's Arsenal? London. In London, I am
- 56:55Speaker 1: telling you right now, 60 shares. 60% of men, 25
- 57:00Speaker 1: to 54, who live in London are listening to Arsenal.
- 57:06Speaker 6: I am not joking you when I tell you this,
- 57:07Speaker 6: Fleetwood Town.
- 57:08Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 57:10Speaker 6: I would imagine you have the funds to buy Fleetwood
- 57:13Speaker 6: Town if you wanted to.
- 57:16Speaker 1: I'm going to buy the club.
- 57:18Speaker 6: Wow, that's how we get into soccer.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Let's wait for a loss, though.
