- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It is Stugatz & Company as we head into a
- 0:22Speaker 1: big football weekend. Mina Kime's going to join us in
- 0:24Speaker 1: about 15 minutes. Frank Caliendo will join us Later this
- 0:28Speaker 1: hour as well. And Bear and T-Bob and myself will
- 0:32Speaker 1: get you ready for a big college football weekend. Mike
- 0:35Speaker 1: Ditka passes away today at the age of 86. We
- 0:38Speaker 1: have some sound here. Taylor, you have sound of Mike Ditka's.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Before we get to Mike EA's top five games of
- 0:44Speaker 1: the weekend coming up here, Mike Ditka passed away 86.
- 0:47Speaker 1: He is just one of those figures in the NFL
- 0:51Speaker 1: that is larger than life. But I'm not certain many people,
- 0:55Speaker 1: especially the younger portion of the audience, really knows about
- 0:59Speaker 1: Mike Ditka and what Mike Ditka.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Was all about.
- 1:01Speaker 1: You have sound that would lend to what Mike Ditka
- 1:03Speaker 1: was all about, right?
- 1:04Speaker 4: Yeah, we have two sounds that kind of encapsulate who
- 1:06Speaker 4: Mike Ditka was as a person. And, Stu, you mentioned
- 1:09Speaker 4: the younger generation not really knowing much about Mike Ditka
- 1:12Speaker 4: in terms of the football player or the football coach.
- 1:14Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Revolutionary for that tight end position where a tight end
- 1:18Speaker 4: putting up a thousand yards receiving in a 14 game
- 1:21Speaker 4: season in 1961.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Would be like the equivalent of a receiver putting up
- 1:25Speaker 4: like 3000 yards today in a single season.
- 1:28Speaker 1: A great player, great coach, only guy in NFL history
- 1:31Speaker 1: to win a Superbowl as a head coach, a player
- 1:34Speaker 1: and an assistant coach.
- 1:35Speaker 3: How about that?
- 1:36Speaker 4: And he he's a coach that looks like, like if
- 1:39Speaker 4: you were making a list of, Coaches that look like
- 1:42Speaker 4: they can't wait to punch you square.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Between the nose.
- 1:45Speaker 4: It's Mike Ditka's list.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It's him and Marty Schottenheimer.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Woody Hayes? Well, Woody Hayes did it. Buddy Ryan, too.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Looks like he couldn't wait.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Well, Buddy Ryan got in a fight with Mike Ditka.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Can I throw out a surprise name I think that
- 1:59Speaker 4: would fit in this list of coaches that look like
- 2:01Speaker 4: they can't wait to punch you square between the nose?
- 2:03Speaker 1: So these are coaches who can't wait to punch you
- 2:07Speaker 1: in the.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Face, right?
- 2:08Speaker 4: Square between the nose, yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Okay. All right. Yeah, go ahead.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Bo Pelini it's a good.
- 2:15Speaker 6: One yes it isn't bad yes does Vrabel Does Rabel
- 2:19Speaker 6: want to punch you right in the face? He's got
- 2:21Speaker 6: a little bit of a sourpuss on him.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Like a snarl, yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah, he does have a snarl. I'm trying to think.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Does Mike Singletary look like someone who wants to punch
- 2:27Speaker 1: you square in the face?
- 2:28Speaker 3: That's a good one.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Who do you want to punch in the face? Mike
- 2:32Speaker 1: McDaniel for me.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Or like the kicker that comes in and misses a
- 2:37Speaker 4: big kick. Like Mike Ditka would have punched that kicker
- 2:40Speaker 4: between the nose.
- 2:40Speaker 3: He had a great kicker.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Kevin Butler never missed a kick. That team was one
- 2:44Speaker 1: of the all-time great teams in NFL history.
- 2:46Speaker 3: He was the head coach. of perhaps they didn't go undefeated.
- 2:50Speaker 1: They lost to the Dolphins on a Monday night. Dan
- 2:52Speaker 1: Marino had a great game offensively. But that is one
- 2:57Speaker 1: of the five greatest teams, I could say that safely,
- 3:00Speaker 1: in NFL history. And I think many people would say
- 3:04Speaker 1: that the 85 Bears, with Mike Ditka as their head coach,
- 3:07Speaker 1: was the greatest team in NFL history.
- 3:19Speaker 4: So, Stu, the first call that we have today, or
- 3:22Speaker 4: the first sound that we have today, is a fan
- 3:24Speaker 4: who called Mike Ditka a baby on a call-in radio show.
- 3:29Speaker 7: Why did it appear that Mike was holding back, trying
- 3:33Speaker 7: not to cry like the.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Baby that he is?
- 3:35Speaker 7: Well, Neil, I tell you, what you are, I can't
- 3:40Speaker 7: say on the air. But I tell you what, I'm
- 3:44Speaker 7: 53 years old, and my office is at 250 North Washington.
- 3:49Speaker 7: Anytime you want to meet me there, you call me
- 3:52Speaker 7: back on the air. You tell me what time and when,
- 3:54Speaker 7: and I'll whip your ass.
- 3:58Speaker 2: You got that, big boy?
- 4:01Speaker 3: It's easy to.
- 4:02Speaker 7: Hide behind a microphone, son. Let's get your face out
- 4:06Speaker 7: in public, and let's live where people have to see
- 4:08Speaker 7: you every day, and we'll see who the gutless wonder is.
- 4:12Speaker 1: That's Mike Ditka for you, especially people in the younger
- 4:15Speaker 1: demographic of the audience here. That is Mike Ditka. That
- 4:18Speaker 1: is how he was. That is how he is. That's
- 4:20Speaker 1: how he'll always be. He passed away at the age
- 4:22Speaker 1: of 86. That's also how radio sounded in the 80s.
- 4:26Speaker 3: A little tingy, yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 4: We'll see who the gutless wonder is, is like such
- 4:30Speaker 4: a good line from somebody like Mike Ditka, who's probably
- 4:32Speaker 4: sitting in some restaurant in Chicago doing this coach's show.
- 4:35Speaker 7: Yes.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Ditka's restaurant. This other sound.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Yes, exactly. This other sound comes from his time with
- 4:41Speaker 4: the Saints, where the Saints get off to a rough start.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:45Speaker 4: And the last thing Mike Ditka wants to do when
- 4:47Speaker 4: his team is getting off to a rough start is
- 4:49Speaker 4: talk to reporters.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Well, let's keep in mind here, he traded an entire
- 4:52Speaker 1: draft class to get Ricky Williams.
- 4:55Speaker 4: And this is that frustration boiling over when the reporters
- 4:58Speaker 4: just keep pestering him with questions.
- 4:59Speaker 7: Yes.
- 5:00Speaker 3: It doesn't matter which one run.
- 5:01Speaker 5: There'll be a quarterback that'll be named next week that'll
- 5:04Speaker 5: be the starter. There's three quarterbacks on this football team.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Whichever one starts, starts. Whichever ones don't will back him up.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Period.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Cut and dry.
- 5:12Speaker 5: It's nobody's concern but ours.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Nobody's. Next. Injuries from the game. Talk to the trainer.
- 5:20Speaker 7: Next. Mike, why are you in such a bad mood?
- 5:23Speaker 7: What do you care?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:27Speaker 5: If you were 2-7, you'd be in a bad mood too.
- 5:30Speaker 7: What next? Mike, it's just more like a training camp
- 5:34Speaker 7: type practice as opposed to a regular season. Yes.
- 5:37Speaker 6: Next.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Not very much fun, is it?
- 5:44Speaker 6: No.
- 5:46Speaker 3: All right. I'll see you guys. Classic.
- 5:49Speaker 4: You have to read the room there. If you're a
- 5:51Speaker 4: reporter in that situation, you can't ask them, why are
- 5:54Speaker 4: you in a bad mood?
- 5:55Speaker 1: They were terrified to be honest though. If, if the
- 5:57Speaker 1: saints were seven and two, Mike would be in a
- 5:59Speaker 1: bad mood.
- 6:01Speaker 4: This sound though. It's like, it's like going into like
- 6:04Speaker 4: a tiger's den and just trying to poke the tiger
- 6:07Speaker 4: with a stick and be like, Hey tiger, why are you,
- 6:09Speaker 4: why are you so mad? It's like, You have to remember,
- 6:11Speaker 4: at the end of the day, the tiger is a tiger.
- 6:13Speaker 7: Yes.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Put it on the poll.
- 6:14Speaker 1: At the end of the day, is a tiger a tiger?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Did you hear the fear in the reporter's voices, Mikey?
- 6:20Speaker 3: Yeah, the tremble.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Because with each passing question, the fear, it grows more
- 6:25Speaker 1: and more with each passing reporter until they just stop.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Play it one more time.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Matter which one run there'll be a quarterback that'll be
- 6:33Speaker 5: named next week that'll be the starter there's three quarterbacks
- 6:36Speaker 5: on this football team whichever one starts starts whichever ones
- 6:39Speaker 5: don't will back him up period cut and dry it's
- 6:42Speaker 5: nobody's concern but ours nobody's.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Next injuries from the uh game talk to the trainer next.
- 6:51Speaker 7: All right mike why are you in such a bad mood.
- 6:53Speaker 5: What do you care jesus right okay you were two
- 6:58Speaker 5: and seven you'd be in a bad mood too What next?
- 7:02Speaker 7: Mike, is this more like a training campsite practice than
- 7:05Speaker 7: a regular season? Yes.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Next. Not very much fun, is it?
- 7:14Speaker 2: No?
- 7:14Speaker 3: No.
- 7:16Speaker 7: All right.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I'll see you guys.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Now, if you pay attention, it's almost like he respected
- 7:23Speaker 6: that last reporter.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Almost.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Like, he.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Like, almost.
- 7:26Speaker 6: Like, it was like one of those, like, don't... Listen,
- 7:28Speaker 6: I'm going to give you an answer, and the answer
- 7:30Speaker 6: is yes.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Shut up after that.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I love that he's angry with the reporters because his
- 7:37Speaker 1: team is so lousy at two and seven.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Like, it's their fault.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I mean.
- 7:42Speaker 3: But that was Mike Ditka.
- 7:44Speaker 1: And I'm telling you, 7-2, we would have given probably
- 7:46Speaker 1: somewhere in the vicinity of the same answer.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Gatz and
- 7:51Speaker 2: Company live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m. Pacific
- 7:56Speaker 2: on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Let's get to Mikey A's top five games of the weekend.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I also have a top five. I have top five games.
- 8:06Speaker 3: I wrote them down.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I just want to see if my list matches up
- 8:09Speaker 1: with your list. But let's do it, Mikey A.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Take it away.
- 8:13Speaker 7: All right.
- 8:13Speaker 6: Well, I have one OLI and you know, all my
- 8:15Speaker 6: games are NFL.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Okay.
- 8:16Speaker 6: Love college, but this is an NFL list. One OLI
- 8:20Speaker 6: Eagles at Jaguars in London. If you've seen one international game,
- 8:23Speaker 6: you've seen them all, but these are two teams that
- 8:25Speaker 6: are supposed to be a playoff contender.
- 8:27Speaker 7: Yes.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I had that at number five for me. Yeah.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Okay yep number five taylor i don't know what you
- 8:34Speaker 6: called this game but this is the tom brady's past
- 8:36Speaker 6: and present game this is raiders at patriots.
- 8:39Speaker 8: Wow wow i got it for yes all of a
- 8:43Speaker 8: sudden this is a great game i mean is it
- 8:46Speaker 8: a revenge game for the patriots patriots lost to this
- 8:48Speaker 8: raiders team last year on the way to their super
- 8:49Speaker 8: bowl i forgot about that yes first game of the
- 8:51Speaker 8: season right yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 6: Yes This next game is supposed to be so much better,
- 8:58Speaker 6: but the quarterback is hurt. But now they're playing, in
- 9:01Speaker 6: memory of Mike Ditka, Bears and Packers.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Wow.
- 9:04Speaker 4: There's no way the Bears lose this game.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Not a chance.
- 9:06Speaker 4: The Mike Ditka game?
- 9:07Speaker 3: No way. If you bet on the Packers, it's un-American
- 9:09Speaker 3: this week. Correct. Put it on the poll, Taylor. I
- 9:16Speaker 3: didn't have that game anywhere in my top five, Mike.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I wasn't thinking of Mike Ditka. That's a good job
- 9:20Speaker 3: out of you. That's your fault. I'm complimenting you. No,
- 9:23Speaker 3: I wish I had.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Appreciate it.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
- 9:26Speaker 6: All right, number three. A couple of birds cutting it up.
- 9:29Speaker 6: Ravens at Falcons.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Ravens-Falcons. Yeah, that's an interesting game.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Not my top five, right, but you want to see
- 9:37Speaker 1: are the Falcons for real, you know?
- 9:40Speaker 6: What have they shown you since Michael Penix coming back
- 9:42Speaker 6: makes you think they're not?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 9:44Speaker 1: They're 40 points a game. Best offense in the NFL
- 9:47Speaker 1: since Penix came back. All right, keep going.
- 9:50Speaker 2: All right, number two, Monday Night Football.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Bills at Rams might see this game again in February. Yes,
- 9:55Speaker 3: I had that also at number two. How about that?
- 10:00Speaker 3: It's a good game.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And the number one game.
- 10:01Speaker 7: Yes.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I mean, come on.
- 10:03Speaker 6: NFC West, 49ers at Seahawks. Fantastic game. Super Bowl champs
- 10:09Speaker 6: going up against the 4-0 team that usually gives them problems.
- 10:12Speaker 3: So I had that at number three. I had Alabama
- 10:15Speaker 3: and Georgia at number one. It's a big game. I
- 10:20Speaker 3: don't hate it. Wow, Mikey. No college on my list, though.
- 10:22Speaker 4: You mentioned 49ers Seahawks. NFL Week 5 is here, and
- 10:25Speaker 4: this one's personal. It's the 49ers versus the Seahawks this
- 10:28Speaker 4: Sunday for America's Game of the Week, streaming live on
- 10:31Speaker 4: Fox 1 at 425 p.m.
- 10:31Speaker 7: Eastern.
- 10:33Speaker 4: This rivalry needs no introduction. It's the undefeated 49ers versus
- 10:37Speaker 4: the Super Bowl champion Seahawks. There's no bigger stage to
- 10:40Speaker 4: settle it than this one. Don't worry, you can catch
- 10:43Speaker 4: every can't-miss play before it becomes a highlight. 49ers-Seahawks, live
- 10:47Speaker 4: Sunday on Fox 1.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I just said that.
- 10:52Speaker 4: It needs no introduction.
- 10:53Speaker 3: When in Rome. Steve Martin.
- 10:58Speaker 1: It seems like no games ever need an introduction.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Correct. And yet all we do is introduce them.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I noticed no jets on this for either one of you.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Why would the jets be on there? Why?
- 11:10Speaker 6: No.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Big spot for them.
- 11:13Speaker 1: What?
- 11:14Speaker 6: And?
- 11:14Speaker 7: Who?
- 11:15Speaker 8: How?
- 11:15Speaker 3: They're one in three.
- 11:18Speaker 4: I like them this week.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I like them as well, but they wouldn't be in
- 11:23Speaker 1: anyone's top five games. What is a magical NFL and
- 11:27Speaker 1: college weekend?
