- 0:26Speaker 1: more dominoes have fallen in the NFL head coaching carousel,
- 0:33Speaker 1: with the Raiders and the Jaguars finding their next head coaches.
- 0:39Speaker 1: The splash hire today certainly was Pete Carroll going to
- 0:44Speaker 1: the Raiders. We know Pete Carroll's history, of course, early
- 0:47Speaker 1: in his career with the Jets and the Patriots, and
- 0:51Speaker 1: then landing at USC with that amazing run, finding his
- 0:55Speaker 1: way back to the NFL with the Seahawks winning a
- 0:58Speaker 1: Super Bowl, playing for another after a long tenure there,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I was let go after last season, out of coaching
- 1:03Speaker 1: this year, now back in the game with the Raiders.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It is a bit surprising Pete Carroll at seventy foty
- 1:10Speaker 1: years old the oldest head coach in NFL history now
- 1:13Speaker 1: at this point, but fair to say maybe a youthful
- 1:16Speaker 1: seventy four, a guy that's always had a lot of energy.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And you know, I know, we focus, we get hyper
- 1:22Speaker 1: focus sometimes on the age of coaches in particularly the NFL.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Is a big deal with the Belichick conversation a year ago,
- 1:31Speaker 1: because he's seventy three. And I don't know, Man, when
- 1:37Speaker 1: are NFL head coaching hires ever thought to be long
- 1:40Speaker 1: term hires? In your head, you may think that's what
- 1:43Speaker 1: you hope to achieve, someone that will be there for
- 1:45Speaker 1: fifteen years, like Sean Payton was in New Orleans, or
- 1:48Speaker 1: like when Mike Tomlin has done better part of two
- 1:50Speaker 1: decades in Pittsburgh, or John Harbaugh and Baltimore. That's just
- 1:56Speaker 1: not the reality. I mean, the Raiders hired to coach
- 1:59Speaker 1: a year ago the last and one season. So the
- 2:02Speaker 1: Saints hired Dennis Allen. He didn't make it through year three.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So on one hand, I look at it and I go, man, yes,
- 2:09Speaker 1: seventy four years old. At the other on the other hand,
- 2:10Speaker 1: I go, do you really think you're hiring any coach
- 2:13Speaker 1: to be there for a decade? It's just not what
- 2:15Speaker 1: it is in the NFL. I mean, Andy Reid in
- 2:19Speaker 1: Kansas City now is the outlier. Sure, you go keep
- 2:22Speaker 1: churning out Super Bowls at Patrick Mahomes. You got a
- 2:24Speaker 1: job as long as you want it. That just ain't
- 2:26Speaker 1: the norm for the thirty one other teams in the NFL.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So if the Raiders hire Pete Carroll and he establishes
- 2:37Speaker 1: a little bit of culture, improves the roster. A guy
- 2:40Speaker 1: that's a known culture roster builder that can get you
- 2:44Speaker 1: to a more competitive championship level, all right, and then
- 2:48Speaker 1: in three years maybe hands it off to somebody else.
- 2:51Speaker 1: The other does directly or indirectly, I should say, impact
- 2:55Speaker 1: the Saints. The Jaguars have hired Liam Cohen. Liam Cohen
- 2:59Speaker 1: spent this year. What an interesting ride for Liam Cohen
- 3:03Speaker 1: from Kentucky to the Rams, back to Kentucky, then to
- 3:06Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the OC, and then now
- 3:09Speaker 1: as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Of course,
- 3:13Speaker 1: it's notable because the Saints are in the same division
- 3:15Speaker 1: as the Bucks, and so for the second consecutive year
- 3:17Speaker 1: now the Bucks will lose their OC. Dave canallys a
- 3:20Speaker 1: year Ago becomes the head coach at Carolina. Now Liam
- 3:22Speaker 1: Cohen becomes the head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. I mean,
- 3:26Speaker 1: I guess there's something to be said. Man, if you
- 3:30Speaker 1: make it to the playoffs and you maximize Baker Mayfield, dog,
- 3:33Speaker 1: you're gonna be a head coach. So Dave Canalys a
- 3:36Speaker 1: year ago, and it seemed to work. Bryce Young later
- 3:39Speaker 1: in the season was starting to come into his own
- 3:42Speaker 1: looking more like a guy that was worthy of a
- 3:43Speaker 1: first round pick. In the last month of this season.
- 3:45Speaker 1: We'll see what Liam Cohen can do in Jacksonville. Certainly
- 3:48Speaker 1: his task is going to be go maximize Trevor Lawrence,
- 3:52Speaker 1: because not only do they take him number one overall,
- 3:54Speaker 1: of course, they've already invested in a second contract in
- 3:57Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence. But this is less about Liam Cohen, the
- 4:00Speaker 1: result of the Bucks, or what it means for Jacksonville.
- 4:03Speaker 1: It's all about how it relates to New Orleans. So
- 4:05Speaker 1: the news worthy item for the Saints here on Friday
- 4:12Speaker 1: is that the Saints have now conducted their second in
- 4:15Speaker 1: person interview. Last week, Darren Rizzy had his in person
- 4:22Speaker 1: interview with New Orleans. That was something they were allowed
- 4:24Speaker 1: to do because he was already an in house candidate,
- 4:27Speaker 1: So no big deal there with how without that played out,
- 4:32Speaker 1: So you were able to interview Darren Rizzy in person
- 4:34Speaker 1: last week. Now you've interviewed Anthony Weaver, the Dolphins defensive coordinator.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Weavers an interesting guy, whose who played in the NFL.
- 4:43Speaker 1: He's forty four years old. He's been a career assistant,
- 4:46Speaker 1: but looking for that first head coaching opportunity now in
- 4:50Speaker 1: his mid forties. Interviewed for a couple of the vacancies
- 4:53Speaker 1: a year ago, including Atlanta. So I don't believe Anthony
- 4:58Speaker 1: Weaver is going to get the job. I don't think
- 4:59Speaker 1: he's a guy add or near the top of the
- 5:01Speaker 1: Saints wish list. What we also know is that Mike
- 5:04Speaker 1: Kafka is set to interview this weekend in person. That's
- 5:07Speaker 1: the Giants offensive coordinator, and then next week Mike McCarthy
- 5:11Speaker 1: is supposed to interview in person with the New Orleans
- 5:13Speaker 1: Saints as well. And if I have one big takeaway
- 5:16Speaker 1: from the hires that have already been made, it's that
- 5:19Speaker 1: the the hires that have been made have allowed the
- 5:24Speaker 1: Saints to stay and play with their top targets now
- 5:26Speaker 1: the The exception, of course, is is Aaron Glenn. But
- 5:32Speaker 1: and who knows if the Saints actually coveted Ben Johnson.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I would assume they did, because everyone did. He was
- 5:37Speaker 1: the top guy in this class that everybody wanted, and
- 5:40Speaker 1: he landed in Chicago. But you know, we looked at
- 5:45Speaker 1: the hires that we had already been made up until
- 5:47Speaker 1: this point, with Mike Vrabel going to New England. That's
- 5:51Speaker 1: probably a guy the Saints. It is a guy the
- 5:53Speaker 1: Saints wanted to talk to, but he took a better job.
- 5:59Speaker 1: We mentioned Ben Johnson of course landing at Chicago, and
- 6:04Speaker 1: then Aaron Glenn is the other one that the Saints wanted,
- 6:07Speaker 1: but he who is the Saints reported top target, he
- 6:10Speaker 1: lands in New York with the Jets. Well after that,
- 6:13Speaker 1: you're starting to see all these coaching dominoes fall, with
- 6:17Speaker 1: the Raiders and the Jaguars now having their coaches, and
- 6:20Speaker 1: so you look at New Orleans and you go, all right, well,
- 6:25Speaker 1: Dallas still has to hire a coach. But it doesn't
- 6:28Speaker 1: seem as though the Saints and the Cowboys are fishing
- 6:34Speaker 1: in the same waters. So at this point, while Aaron
- 6:39Speaker 1: Glenn might have been your top target and he took
- 6:43Speaker 1: a deal with the Jets. At this point, the Saints
- 6:48Speaker 1: kind of have their pick. And I'll reiterate the thing
- 6:54Speaker 1: that I think is most important for New Orleans right now,
- 6:57Speaker 1: and it is not to rush to a decision, because
- 7:01Speaker 1: whoever you want to hire at this point, you have time.
- 7:04Speaker 1: You have time. The league year, yes, this coming week
- 7:08Speaker 1: is the Senior Bowl. The league year doesn't start until March.
- 7:13Speaker 1: The draft isn't until April. You have time. I'm not
- 7:16Speaker 1: saying you're waiting until March to hire a coach. What
- 7:19Speaker 1: I am saying is there's no reason to rush a
- 7:22Speaker 1: coach to the podium right now. If you want to
- 7:26Speaker 1: talk to Joe Brady, but the Bills upset Kansas City
- 7:30Speaker 1: this week, you can wait two more weeks until KC
- 7:35Speaker 1: or until Buffalo excuse me, plays in the Super Bowl
- 7:38Speaker 1: to talk to Joe Brady. Because the reality is and
- 7:41Speaker 1: nobody else hiring Mike McCarthy. I don't suspect Mike Kafka
- 7:46Speaker 1: or Anthony Weaver are getting hired by the Dallas Cowboys.
- 7:50Speaker 1: So when you look at it, you kind of at
- 7:54Speaker 1: this point have your pick of who's left in this
- 7:58Speaker 1: game of musical chairs. You're I mean, yes, Dallas is
- 8:01Speaker 1: out there as well, but you have really your your
- 8:06Speaker 1: pick of who's out there right now. So I the
- 8:14Speaker 1: one thing that I really want for New Orleans to
- 8:16Speaker 1: do is take your time. If you want to wait
- 8:21Speaker 1: and talk to Cliff Kingsbury. If Washington wins this weekend
- 8:24Speaker 1: and goes to the Super Bowl, wait another two weeks.
- 8:28Speaker 1: There is no reason to rush. You want to hire
- 8:32Speaker 1: Darren Rizzy, you can hire Darren Rizzy because if you don't,
- 8:36Speaker 1: somebody's gonna hire him to be a s best teams coach.
- 8:39Speaker 1: He's gonna be fine. You want to hire Mike McCarthy, great,
- 8:43Speaker 1: Wait two weeks. Mike McCarthy ain't going nowhere. He's just chilling.
- 8:48Speaker 1: But I will say the thing that I find perhaps
- 8:53Speaker 1: the most appealing, and this is something that is starting
- 8:56Speaker 1: to resonate a bit more with me. I think what
- 9:01Speaker 1: the Raiders did this year, meaning in the past calendar year,
- 9:07Speaker 1: is actually something that the Saints could replicate. The Raiders
- 9:15Speaker 1: hired Antonio Pierce, and Pierce lasted one year. And I'm
- 9:20Speaker 1: not saying you hire a coach with the intent of
- 9:22Speaker 1: in being a one year guy. And we all want
- 9:24Speaker 1: that answer. But part of the reason the Saints didn't
- 9:28Speaker 1: make the cut for their top guy and Aaron Glenn,
- 9:33Speaker 1: and part of the reason they never got a glance
- 9:35Speaker 1: from Ben Johnson is a Saints aren't a good job.
- 9:38Speaker 1: It's not a good job right now. We've talked about it,
- 9:40Speaker 1: a ton, no franchise, quarterback, aging, roster, awful cap situation,
- 9:46Speaker 1: all the stuff. Well, Scott Shanley tweeted this on Thursday,
- 9:55Speaker 1: and it was a quote tweet of a pff thing
- 9:57Speaker 1: about future salary cap space. And in twenty twenty five,
- 10:00Speaker 1: as we know, the Saints currently are fifty two million
- 10:02Speaker 1: over the cap, but as Shanley points out, in twenty
- 10:06Speaker 1: six you go sixty million under the cap, and in
- 10:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven you go two hundred and twenty one
- 10:12Speaker 1: million under the cap. As a lot of the now, look,
- 10:16Speaker 1: that's gonna change, right because you're gonna sign free agents.
- 10:18Speaker 1: You're gonna have to restructure deals this year, which is
- 10:20Speaker 1: gonna kick money into future years. But the point is
- 10:24Speaker 1: your cap situation twelve months from now and twenty four
- 10:28Speaker 1: months from now can, if you're responsible, completely shift to
- 10:32Speaker 1: where you have money to spend. You can get younger,
- 10:35Speaker 1: provided you do well in the draft, and you find
- 10:37Speaker 1: starting players in the draft, and of course the salary
- 10:41Speaker 1: cap will continue to rise. So a year from now
- 10:45Speaker 1: you are a much more desirable job than you are today.
- 10:49Speaker 1: So maybe maybe there's nothing wrong with retaining Darren Rizzy
- 10:56Speaker 1: for a year. Cut Derek Carr. Spread that money out
- 11:01Speaker 1: over the next two years after this one. Bring in
- 11:05Speaker 1: an inexpensive veteran, Bring in Jacoby Brissett, bring in Jimmy
- 11:09Speaker 1: g Let them battle it out with Rattler and Hater.
- 11:14Speaker 1: See how that goes. You're not going to be good anyway,
- 11:18Speaker 1: So you take it on the chin. You win four
- 11:19Speaker 1: or five games, you're picking in the top five of
- 11:21Speaker 1: the draft, and next year, when you have a deep
- 11:24Speaker 1: quarterback draft class and money to spend in free agency
- 11:28Speaker 1: and a top five pick, then maybe you go get
- 11:32Speaker 1: the guy that is your guy. Now, I know that
- 11:33Speaker 1: is counter to the way the Saints have operated. They
- 11:38Speaker 1: want tenure and they want stability. That's what they've been
- 11:40Speaker 1: for twenty years. But look where it's gotten you. Now
- 11:44Speaker 1: you're in a terrible situation. I think the worst thing
- 11:50Speaker 1: the Saints can do is Russia higher and remain all
- 11:55Speaker 1: in the best thing they could do is acknowledge where
- 11:58Speaker 1: you are instead of trying to fight your way out
- 12:01Speaker 1: of this box that you're in that you're not getting
- 12:04Speaker 1: out of. Like you're full on David Blaine Man. You're
- 12:07Speaker 1: in a straight jacket with Shane's and everything, and you're
- 12:09Speaker 1: in a box and you don't have a key, like
- 12:11Speaker 1: you're stuck. It's going to suck in twenty twenty five.
- 12:14Speaker 1: It is going to suck. There is no way out
- 12:16Speaker 1: of that. There is no like you've got to accept
- 12:19Speaker 1: there is no way out of this. Derek Carr isn't
- 12:22Speaker 1: all of a sudden gonna come back next year and
- 12:24Speaker 1: be a Hall of Famer. Cam Jordan a't gonna drink
- 12:26Speaker 1: from the fountain of youth, like You're not gonna be
- 12:28Speaker 1: awesome next year. You're not. There's no Jaden Daniels waiting
- 12:33Speaker 1: to save you. That's not there. You're not going from
- 12:36Speaker 1: a four win team you draft Jayden and Daniels. You're
- 12:38Speaker 1: in the conference championship game. It doesn't exist for these Saints.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Acknowledge that and play the long game, which you should
- 12:46Speaker 1: have done two years ago, but you just kept hammering away,
- 12:49Speaker 1: trying to dig yourself out of that hole. And all
- 12:52Speaker 1: you did was dig deeper. So be patient, play the
- 12:57Speaker 1: long game for the betterment of the franchise. For the
- 13:01Speaker 1: love of God, don't rush someone up to a podium
- 13:03Speaker 1: because you feel like you have to hurry and make
- 13:05Speaker 1: a higher. All you have now is time because you're
- 13:08Speaker 1: the only game in town. You and Dallas aren't. Who
- 13:11Speaker 1: knows what Jerry Jones is going to do, but you
- 13:14Speaker 1: in Dallas aren't competing for the same candidates right now.
- 13:17Speaker 1: So take your time, interview all your candidates, and make
- 13:20Speaker 1: a higher when you're ready, make the best hire based
- 13:22Speaker 1: on what's going to be the best long term solution
- 13:24Speaker 1: for this organization.
