Speaker 8: I'm Brian and in this episode we are coming to
• 2:04
Speaker 8: you live via digital recording from the IF Film Fest
• 2:07
Speaker 8: here in Louisville, Kentucky. And luckily this time we are
• 2:10
Speaker 8: joined by not one but two special guest co-hosts. We
• 2:14
Speaker 8: are glad to welcome back, no stranger to this show,
• 2:16
Speaker 8: our beloved Jess Weixler. And with her is an established
• 2:19
Speaker 8: actress herself, Miss Jennifer Prediger. Now these two are at
• 2:22
Speaker 8: the festival with their new film, Trouble Dolls. But they're
• 2:25
Speaker 8: not just the stars of the film, they also very
• 2:27
Speaker 8: impressively wrote and directed the movie. So now let's go
• 2:30
Speaker 8: check in with Jess and Jennifer and hear how Jess
• 2:32
Speaker 8: has been exposing Jennifer to her hometown. And learn a
• 2:35
Speaker 8: little bit more about these two as well as how
• 2:37
Speaker 8: they came to create Trouble Dolls. All right, so we're
• 2:45
Speaker 8: back with our favorite, our adopted co-host.
• 2:49
  Speaker 9: Favorite, yes.
• 2:50
  Speaker 10: Your beloved Jess.
• 2:52
Speaker 8: I mean, come on.
• 2:52
  Speaker 1: I'll take beloved.
• 2:53
Speaker 8: We refer to you quite often, and it's usually the
• 2:56
  Speaker 8: beloved Jess.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: It was the nut cheese that did it, isn't it?
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Giving you a recipe for making cheese and cashews.
• 3:03
Speaker 8: Most of that. episode we did together we talked about
• 3:06
Speaker 8: nut cheese and she's again special special people she's very.
• 3:11
Speaker 9: Special Jess I don't know about this but I'm not
• 3:13
Speaker 9: going to make you talk about it now but I
• 3:14
Speaker 9: need to have a recipe for nut cheese or whatever
• 3:18
Speaker 9: we don't have to bore the people.
• 3:21
Speaker 8: She was supposed to bring it back she makes promises
• 3:25
Speaker 8: when you came back to town you like threw down
• 3:27
Speaker 8: the gauntlet you were like we're having a cheese off
• 3:29
Speaker 8: and like other people were going to make their version
• 3:32
Speaker 8: and there was going to be a taste test involved so.
• 3:35
Speaker 1: I have to stay somewhere that's not in a hotel.
• 3:38
Speaker 8: They don't like you making cheese in the room?
• 3:40
Speaker 1: They won't let me make cheese in the mini bar anymore.
• 3:45
Speaker 8: Well, you just tell them you're Jess and they won't argue.
• 3:48
  Speaker 3: Is that?
• 3:48
Speaker 8: I'm pretty sure you can pull that off.
• 3:50
  Speaker 1: I didn't even try.
• 3:51
Speaker 9: Is that very Midwestern to make cheese?
• 3:54
Speaker 1: Yes. Cheese and whiskey.
• 3:56
  Speaker 9: Okay.
• 3:58
Speaker 8: So you have been here before, but I will let
• 4:00
Speaker 8: you introduce your co-host, your co-director, your team.
• 4:03
Speaker 1: This is my brilliant, favorite, beloved Jennifer Perediger. My co-director, co-writer,
• 4:12
Speaker 1: co-star in crime for Trouble Dolls. Yes.
• 4:18
Speaker 8: Somehow I do see you guys as being troublesome.
• 4:21
  Speaker 1: We really are.
• 4:23
Speaker 9: We should probably be arrested or something. I don't know.
• 4:26
Speaker 1: It would be so much cooler if we actually got arrested.
• 4:30
Speaker 1: I feel like we honestly need to get it on
• 4:32
Speaker 1: our record so that we have some legitimacy.
• 4:33
Speaker 9: So we could be real trouble dolls. Maybe tonight in Kentucky,
• 4:38
Speaker 9: in Louisville. We'll be in trouble.
• 4:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, when you see us at 2 a.m.
• 4:42
Speaker 8: It'll be true. Along those trouble lines, I did want
• 4:45
Speaker 8: to ask, are you protecting your cloud persona?
• 4:49
  Speaker 1: Cloud persona. Oh.
• 4:50
  Speaker 9: Cloud persona.
• 4:51
  Speaker 8: Secrets escape out.
• 4:53
  Speaker 1: You know.
• 4:53
Speaker 8: Are there things we're going to find out about you?
• 4:55
  Speaker 1: I don't think I have a filthy cloud.
• 4:58
Speaker 9: A dark rain cloud.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: My filthy cloud is not for public consumption.
• 5:03
Speaker 8: I don't want to see boring selfies, though. I want
• 5:05
Speaker 8: something really good. I want, like, see, here's shots of Jess, like,
• 5:08
Speaker 8: dealing arms. You know, I want something major. I want
• 5:12
Speaker 8: running a white slavery ring. I want something hardcore.
• 5:14
Speaker 9: Pictures of her making nut cheese.
• 5:18
Speaker 8: That'll be what is on your phone. Me with a.
• 5:19
Speaker 1: 22 just shooting a bunch of cashews in the face,
• 5:22
Speaker 1: point blank, and you see them explode, and then I
• 5:25
Speaker 1: pulverize them with my fists and serve them for dinner.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: It's like a super vegan version of Hannibal.
• 5:31
Speaker 8: It's hot. That'll be the real ugly secret that comes out.
• 5:34
Speaker 8: It's just shots of you eating a cheeseburger.
• 5:37
Speaker 1: And you're like, oh, my dark secret. It's in the cloud.
• 5:42
  Speaker 1: Who's not a vegan now?
• 5:43
Speaker 8: I can't show my face in the vegan restaurant ever again.
• 5:47
  Speaker 1: Jenny's also vegetarian, I think.
• 5:49
Speaker 9: That's true. That is true.
• 5:52
Speaker 8: But not big on the nut cheese.
• 5:54
  Speaker 1: I don't feel like that's a popular thing to say
• 5:56
  Speaker 1: in Kentucky, though.
• 5:57
  Speaker 9: It is.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: It gets points against us, to be honest, because the
• 6:01
Speaker 1: barbecue here and the fried chicken.
• 6:02
Speaker 9: The barbecue smells so good. But I make up for
• 6:04
Speaker 9: it in the drinking department. I'll drink so much bourbon,
• 6:07
Speaker 9: they'll forgive the lack of meat eating.
• 6:09
Speaker 1: They'll get all excited if there's bourbon. Kentucky, we drink
• 6:13
Speaker 1: enough bourbon to make up for it.
• 6:17
Speaker 8: We do love some bourbon. They're crazy in this town
• 6:19
Speaker 8: for bourbon. But I think it depends on where you go.
• 6:22
Speaker 8: I think, again, the rest of the state, probably not
• 6:25
Speaker 8: so popular. Louisville's got a weird, like, I even know
• 6:28
Speaker 8: people from surrounding cities that are technically bigger than us,
• 6:31
Speaker 8: but they come here and they're like, wow, you guys
• 6:33
Speaker 8: have so many options for, like, vegan restaurants. And we
• 6:37
Speaker 8: hit that little, like, Highlands, you know, Crescent Hill area
• 6:41
Speaker 8: where everything's kind of trendy. And then we've had people
• 6:44
Speaker 8: that sort of latch on to that stuff. So I
• 6:46
Speaker 8: think we've got more than most places of our size.
• 6:48
Speaker 1: Yeah. Louisville is to Kentucky the way Austin is to Texas.
• 6:54
Speaker 8: It's its own separate... Well, I've tried to get us
• 6:57
Speaker 8: to secede for years now. I'm like, this Louisville thing,
• 7:00
Speaker 8: we need to separate ourselves from the rest of the state.
• 7:02
Speaker 1: Be our own little tiny state.
• 7:04
Speaker 8: At least our own state. If not our own country,
• 7:06
  Speaker 8: I mean.
• 7:07
Speaker 1: I think we should vote, yeah, be our own country.
• 7:09
  Speaker 7: Most definitely.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: Be our own island. Just cut a little moat around
• 7:12
  Speaker 1: us and call.
• 7:13
  Speaker 5: It an island.
• 7:14
Speaker 8: They say it's a bridge out there, but I hope
• 7:15
Speaker 8: they're just separating us from Indiana even more because... I mean,
• 7:19
Speaker 8: we really don't want to be attached, right? Oh, my God.
• 7:21
  Speaker 1: I can't lose my Indiana people. I'm sure you're very
• 7:24
  Speaker 1: nice over.
• 7:24
  Speaker 3: There, guys.
• 7:25
Speaker 8: Half of our cast is from Indiana, so I constantly
• 7:27
Speaker 8: talk smack about them.
• 7:30
Speaker 1: The Hoosiers jokes still fly free.
• 7:32
Speaker 8: That's kind of how this town operates.
• 7:33
Speaker 9: Man. How far are we from Indiana right now?
• 7:35
Speaker 1: Things never change. Almost. Right on it.
• 7:37
Speaker 8: Rock to throw at it. I mean, it's over there.
• 7:39
Speaker 1: People are making love across the Ohio River constantly. And
• 7:43
Speaker 1: at this point, we're all one.
• 7:44
  Speaker 5: I told you.
• 7:45
Speaker 8: I told you to stop hanging out in the parks
• 7:46
  Speaker 8: like that.
• 7:47
Speaker 1: People are getting it on on the bridge.
• 7:50
Speaker 9: Did you ever date someone who lived in Indiana?
• 7:53
Speaker 8: Oh, the horrible secrets.
• 7:55
  Speaker 1: Just because I didn't doesn't mean I wouldn't.
• 7:58
  Speaker 8: I haven't. I'm certainly guilty of that.
• 8:00
  Speaker 1: You have?
• 8:01
Speaker 8: In fact, more than on this side, unfortunately. Dirty secrets
• 8:05
  Speaker 8: all around.
• 8:08
  Speaker 11: Oh, man.
• 8:09
Speaker 8: Have you seen the new fancy walking bridge, though?
• 8:11
Speaker 1: The fancy walking bridge?
• 8:12
  Speaker 11: No.
• 8:12
Speaker 8: The old train bridge that was just waiting to fall
• 8:15
Speaker 8: apart is now you can walk across it to the
• 8:17
  Speaker 8: other side.
• 8:18
  Speaker 1: Really?
• 8:18
  Speaker 8: It's pretty fancy.
• 8:19
Speaker 1: Jenny, I'm sorry we didn't do that today.
• 8:21
  Speaker 8: She's really cheating.
• 8:23
Speaker 1: I didn't even know it was over here anymore.
• 8:26
Speaker 9: You couldn't even find the water. Jess couldn't find the water.
• 8:29
Speaker 9: She was showing me around town.
• 8:32
  Speaker 1: Water park.
• 8:33
Speaker 9: But she did take me to the Louisville Slugger Museum.
• 8:37
Speaker 8: Now, you did get to see a giant baseball bat.
• 8:38
Speaker 9: I saw a huge baseball bat. She took my picture
• 8:40
  Speaker 9: next to it.
• 8:41
Speaker 8: You can't really get it in is the problem.
• 8:43
  Speaker 9: No, you can't.
• 8:44
Speaker 8: They need to figure out a way to get you
• 8:45
Speaker 8: to shoot it from like a block.
• 8:47
  Speaker 9: Down the street.
• 8:47
Speaker 1: Yeah, they need to have like some little thing on
• 8:49
Speaker 1: the sidewalk that says like optimal if you put it
• 8:51
  Speaker 1: on the ground.
• 8:53
Speaker 9: And on 7th Street.
• 8:55
Speaker 8: I'm going to get a little slugger. We got to
• 8:57
Speaker 8: get this worked out.
• 8:59
Speaker 9: Jess found me a discount slugger.
• 9:01
Speaker 8: They burned it wrong.
• 9:04
Speaker 9: Something was wrong with it, but we couldn't tell what
• 9:06
Speaker 9: was wrong with it. I mean, we're amateurs with baseball bats, but.
• 9:10
  Speaker 8: They're hardcore.
• 9:11
  Speaker 9: It looked great.
• 9:12
Speaker 1: Yeah. We're definitely not.
• 9:14
Speaker 9: Even their messed up ones are nice.
• 9:15
  Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
• 9:17
Speaker 1: We're happy with what we got. Yeah.
• 9:20
Speaker 8: Well, we've done the whole intro on you, Jess. I
• 9:22
Speaker 8: thought we'd throw it at her this time and get
• 9:25
Speaker 8: a little backstory, so... Let's start at the very beginning,
• 9:28
Speaker 8: like I always like to do. And you won't have
• 9:30
Speaker 8: her weird hometown stories to tell. You've got to come
• 9:32
Speaker 8: up with your own.
• 9:33
  Speaker 9: Okay.
• 9:34
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 9:34
Speaker 8: From early on, I like the little kid options. What
• 9:38
Speaker 8: did you see yourself growing up to be when you
• 9:41
Speaker 8: were a little kid?
• 9:42
Speaker 9: An astronaut, I think, was the first thing I remember.
• 9:46
Speaker 8: Space camp is still in your future.
• 9:47
Speaker 9: Totally always wanted to be weightless. And that led to
• 9:53
Speaker 9: acting somehow. It went from astronaut to acting. It's all
• 9:58
Speaker 9: up the stars. for a while and then i i
• 10:02
Speaker 9: did i guess senator jennifer prediger always had a nice
• 10:05
Speaker 9: ring to it and then i worked on capitol hill
• 10:07
Speaker 9: a little bit and i was like.
• 10:09
Speaker 8: No It's not like we haven't had any actors turn politician.
• 10:13
Speaker 1: I don't feel like you made enough of an effort
• 10:15
Speaker 1: with astronaut, to be honest. Thank you.
• 10:17
  Speaker 9: I really didn't.
• 10:19
Speaker 8: Although now it really wouldn't do you any good because
• 10:21
Speaker 8: we don't have any spaceships anymore.
• 10:23
Speaker 9: Everyone's going to Mars soon anyway.
• 10:25
Speaker 1: We're going to live there.
• 10:26
Speaker 8: You'd have to relocate to Russia and hitch a ride
• 10:29
Speaker 8: with them at this point.
• 10:30
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 10:32
Speaker 8: So I guess what then... Once you got interested in acting,
• 10:37
Speaker 8: what steps did you take? Was it all just high school?
• 10:40
Speaker 9: It's been a very strange, circuitous path. Because my parents
• 10:45
Speaker 9: really weren't very supportive of the idea of their daughter
• 10:48
  Speaker 9: being an actor.
• 10:49
Speaker 8: Well, okay, the actor part, I can see that. There's
• 10:52
Speaker 8: no money there. No safe money.
• 10:54
Speaker 9: Unless you make it big and you're Robert Downey Jr.
• 10:59
Speaker 8: You got to drink yourself for 20 years.
• 11:01
  Speaker 3: Exactly.
• 11:02
  Speaker 9: Whatever it takes.
• 11:03
Speaker 1: You were saying you have to get arrested.
• 11:05
Speaker 10: You have to get a record.
• 11:06
Speaker 9: I want to invest in my career tonight.
• 11:09
  Speaker 8: We're starting tonight.
• 11:11
Speaker 9: Whatever I have to do to build character to bring
• 11:14
Speaker 9: to the characters that I play.
• 11:16
  Speaker 8: It's research. It's all research.
• 11:19
Speaker 9: But, you know, I acted some in high school, went
• 11:22
Speaker 9: to college, did some plays and stuff. And then I
• 11:27
Speaker 9: ran away to L.A. when I was 21 and started, like,
• 11:31
Speaker 9: trying to make a go of it somehow, not knowing
• 11:34
Speaker 9: at all what I was doing. And I started taking
• 11:36
Speaker 9: classes at the Groundlink Theater, which is this great improv theater.
• 11:41
Speaker 9: But the thing that I did that, you know, was
• 11:44
Speaker 9: crazy was I kept going on auditions. And I actually
• 11:47
Speaker 9: did a thing on The Man Show. Do you remember
• 11:49
  Speaker 9: The Man Show?
• 11:50
  Speaker 8: Even, I guess technically I'm a man, but I did
• 11:53
Speaker 8: not buy into most of the things that they were selling.
• 11:56
  Speaker 8: I'm like, I get it, but I don't know. So
• 11:59
Speaker 8: how did you fit into The Man Show?
• 12:01
Speaker 9: I got like a paid acting gig to go on
• 12:04
Speaker 9: the air at like 5.30 in the morning and just
• 12:06
Speaker 9: do whatever voices they wanted me to do, like play
• 12:09
Speaker 9: whatever character. And I just remember the first time I
• 12:12
Speaker 9: did it, and only time, they wanted me to be
• 12:15
Speaker 9: a teenage vampire so i was like okay i'm down
• 12:18
Speaker 9: with that and i get on you.
• 12:19
Speaker 8: Should add that to your list of astronaut teenage.
• 12:22
Speaker 9: Vampire first paid acting role teenage vampire um and then
• 12:27
Speaker 9: it just like it was so hyper sexualized and it
• 12:31
Speaker 9: i found i mean i think they were sort of
• 12:33
Speaker 9: doing it ironically but like for me at the time
• 12:35
Speaker 9: being like 21 it wasn't ironic like it was just
• 12:38
Speaker 9: kind of um It.
• 12:40
  Speaker 1: Hadn't crested yet.
• 12:41
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 12:42
Speaker 2: It was like a little.
• 12:42
Speaker 9: Dehumanizing in a way. And I felt like a lot
• 12:44
Speaker 9: of things in LA were that way. And I didn't
• 12:46
Speaker 9: have an agent. And I really didn't know how to
• 12:48
Speaker 9: like do stuff. So I went to graduate school in psychology.
• 12:52
Speaker 9: And I was doing like stand-up comedy. Anyway, long circuitous path.
• 12:55
Speaker 1: How cool that makes her though? Graduate school, psychology.
• 12:58
  Speaker 8: You're like, I don't need this acting stuff. But I'll
• 13:01
  Speaker 8: do it.
• 13:01
  Speaker 2: I didn't think I was.
• 13:02
Speaker 1: You have like worldly knowledge.
• 13:05
  Speaker 9: I had a... fun job where I was like a
• 13:07
Speaker 9: journalist for a while, like a video journalist. I got
• 13:11
Speaker 9: to travel worldwide. Worldly.
• 13:13
  Speaker 8: For Vice.
• 13:14
Speaker 9: I wish. That would have been so cool. But then
• 13:19
  Speaker 9: I turned 30 and then I was like, I'm gonna
• 13:23
  Speaker 9: die someday.
• 13:24
Speaker 8: And Tonight, from what I hear, I mean, based on
• 13:28
Speaker 8: your plans, I mean.
• 13:29
Speaker 9: We're thrown down. But at least I've done what I
• 13:33
Speaker 9: wanted to do, which is, you know, act and make movies.
• 13:36
Speaker 9: Because that was the big, like, wake-up call. I was like,
• 13:38
Speaker 9: someday I'm going to drop dead. So I might as
• 13:40
Speaker 9: well do whatever the heck I want to do while
• 13:42
  Speaker 9: I have time.
• 13:43
  Speaker 8: That's a good reason.
• 13:44
Speaker 9: And it was a really foolish mistake to do that. No,
• 13:49
Speaker 9: it's been really wonderful, but it's definitely a crazy path.
• 13:53
Speaker 1: It's always a surprise. Like, we didn't know we were...
• 13:56
Speaker 1: gonna make this movie we.
• 13:58
Speaker 9: Fell into our laps yeah we fell into its lap
• 14:01
Speaker 9: we just sort of we wrote it so fell into
• 14:03
  Speaker 9: each other's laps.
• 14:04
Speaker 1: Of a month on almost a dare you know like
• 14:06
Speaker 1: a producer was like oh you know i like you
• 14:09
Speaker 1: guys if you guys can pull something together that's any
• 14:12
Speaker 1: good at all. Like we'll do it super low bud,
• 14:14
Speaker 1: shoot it in like 15 days and, you know, make,
• 14:19
Speaker 1: you know, help you make it. And we were like,
• 14:20
Speaker 1: let's do it now.
• 14:24
Speaker 8: Last time you were here, you said you were working
• 14:26
Speaker 8: on directing. You said you had a story, but it
• 14:28
  Speaker 8: wasn't this one.
• 14:29
Speaker 1: No, that one I hope to do next with the
• 14:33
Speaker 1: backdrop of people saying, oh, she can actually, she knows
• 14:37
Speaker 1: what it's like to make a movie. And the other
• 14:40
Speaker 1: one I remember telling you is about my dad, which
• 14:43
Speaker 1: if you start on really precious material, I think it'll
• 14:46
Speaker 1: drive you crazy because it was, every day was like,
• 14:48
Speaker 1: what is going to happen? There's so many surprises that
• 14:52
Speaker 1: I think the second time around for both of us,
• 14:54
Speaker 1: like a first love, though maybe won't have that That
• 14:58
Speaker 1: like constant shock and awe, but we'll be steady and man.
• 15:04
Speaker 9: Yeah, it's like the second child. You just give birth
• 15:07
  Speaker 9: so much easier.
• 15:08
Speaker 8: And then you don't pay attention to it anymore.
• 15:11
Speaker 9: No. And you neglect it.
• 15:11
Speaker 8: And you ignore it because you love your first one.
• 15:13
Speaker 9: What are you talking about? Wait, are you a second child?
• 15:16
  Speaker 3: No.
• 15:18
Speaker 8: No, I'm commenting on my sister now. She's very bitter.
• 15:20
Speaker 9: You're the first. Are you the first child?
• 15:22
Speaker 8: I'm the first, but what's funny is it's all about
• 15:24
Speaker 8: the baby. So both of us are just like, oh no, she's...
• 15:27
Speaker 8: The third one came along and stole everybody's thunder, so
• 15:29
  Speaker 8: it's okay.
• 15:29
Speaker 9: Yeah, that sounds about right.
• 15:31
  Speaker 1: It's always somebody else's fault.
• 15:33
Speaker 8: Did you, were you, were there other kids in your family?
• 15:37
Speaker 8: I don't think we went into that.
• 15:38
Speaker 1: Oh, I'm an only. Oh. I'm an only child.
• 15:40
Speaker 9: That seems about right.
• 15:42
  Speaker 8: How about you?
• 15:42
Speaker 9: I'm a half only child, which sounds weird, but my
• 15:45
Speaker 9: parents split, so I'm my dad's only kid, and then
• 15:49
Speaker 9: my mom, so I have a half brother. That's interesting.
• 15:52
Speaker 9: But I think Jess and I kind of related to
• 15:54
Speaker 9: each other because of our, Only childness.
• 15:57
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 15:58
Speaker 9: There's that kind of similar quality. There's a lot.
• 16:02
Speaker 1: Of make-believe involved in being an only child. I mean,
• 16:06
Speaker 1: you have your friends from the neighborhood and then you
• 16:08
Speaker 1: have your imaginary friends. I think they really set you
• 16:12
Speaker 1: up for, you know, continuing to.
• 16:16
  Speaker 8: Pretend.
• 16:16
Speaker 9: They're always there for you, you know?
• 16:18
  Speaker 1: Pretend.
• 16:19
Speaker 8: Pretend for the rest of your life.
• 16:22
Speaker 1: Well, on and off, yeah. Yeah.
• 16:24
  Speaker 10: Just expand.
• 16:25
Speaker 8: I do it every day.
• 16:26
Speaker 1: Just expanding on reality.
• 16:28
Speaker 9: Sometimes it's just lying to myself.
• 16:29
Speaker 10: Fake friends until you make friends.
• 16:32
Speaker 1: Fake friends until you make friends.
• 16:34
Speaker 8: Yeah. Still work on them. And work at it.
• 16:39
Speaker 12: They ate themselves sliding out of the bar.
• 16:55
Speaker 6: Silver and smooth Wrapping around my toes I was properly
• 17:07
Speaker 6: dressed Prepared for what you had to.
• 17:12
Speaker 4: Say Time out for a delicious snack in our sparkling
• 17:25
  Speaker 4: refreshment building.
• 17:27
Speaker 5: Every item a fresh, appetizing taste treat. Fresh popcorn, delicious
• 17:33
Speaker 5: and crisp, with or without butter. French fries, crisp and
• 17:38
  Speaker 5: golden brown.
• 17:40
  Speaker 2: Macadamia nut cheese.
• 17:42
Speaker 5: First quenching, refreshing ice cold drinks.
• 17:49
Speaker 3: He's street smart and steel hard. He's a healer, a fixer.
• 17:53
  Speaker 11: My name's T, baby.
• 17:55
  Speaker 3: Wears $ 600 suits, drives a $ 10, 000 car, and he carries
• 17:59
Speaker 3: two guns, one to stop trouble and one to make trouble.
• 18:03
Speaker 3: He was born in the ghetto and raised in the streets.
• 18:06
Speaker 3: He's been a man since he was a kid, and
• 18:09
Speaker 3: trouble is this man's name. You're a friend of Mr.
• 18:15
  Speaker 12: T's.
• 18:15
Speaker 3: You can count on him.
• 18:17
  Speaker 1: That's my baby.
• 18:18
  Speaker 11: I'm good.
• 18:20
Speaker 3: But if you're not, you can count yourself out.
• 18:22
Speaker 7: I couldn't be gonna damn who owns it or what color.
• 18:25
Speaker 7: Now you see that baby, I'll come back and see
• 18:27
  Speaker 7: the you.
• 18:28
  Speaker 5: You dig it?
• 18:28
Speaker 3: If you've got trouble, call T and leave a message.
• 18:32
Speaker 3: Service is prompt, efficient, and deadly.
• 18:36
Speaker 5: We move in on Big's business and the money comes
• 18:38
Speaker 5: rolling in like waves on the shore.
• 18:40
Speaker 7: All we gotta do is get rid of Mr. T.
• 18:44
Speaker 4: T is on the streets right now!
• 18:48
Speaker 5: One man, Chuck. He's just one man.
• 18:50
Speaker 4: Don't make him sound like a goddamn army.
• 18:52
Speaker 3: He has one edge, and that's his cool, but that's enough, baby,
• 18:55
Speaker 3: because he's thinking all the time, and if he wants your.
• 18:57
Speaker 9: Ass, he gets it.
• 18:59
Speaker 3: Trouble man is mayhem. Rub him wrong, and he'll blow
• 19:02
Speaker 3: up in your face before you shoot my man, Abby.
• 19:06
  Speaker 1: I didn't.
• 19:07
Speaker 4: You and Jimmy got to go away for a couple
• 19:08
Speaker 4: of days. Where do you want to go?
• 19:10
  Speaker 11: For what?
• 19:10
Speaker 2: What for? I got some trouble to handle.
• 19:17
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 19:18
Speaker 4: This is Pete Cockrell. I want to talk to Chalky.
• 19:21
  Speaker 5: This is T. Chalky's dead.
• 19:24
Speaker 3: Now I'm coming to get your honky ass. If you're
• 19:39
Speaker 3: looking for trouble, look out, because trouble is here. Trouble Man,
• 19:45
Speaker 3: you jive him, he'll wash you away.
• 19:53
Speaker 10: Hey guys, look what I've got. Check out these awesome
• 19:56
Speaker 10: earbuds I'm using right now.
• 19:59
  Speaker 8: Look at that.
• 20:00
Speaker 10: That's wood right there.
• 20:01
Speaker 7: That's actual wood. Why would you use wood to make technology?
• 20:05
  Speaker 8: Because they're... It's like.
• 20:08
  Speaker 10: They're steampunk.
• 20:09
Speaker 8: Is steampunk really wood?
• 20:11
Speaker 7: I thought it was more of a brass thing.
• 20:13
Speaker 10: Well, you got to work the wood in to hold
• 20:14
  Speaker 10: the brass together.
• 20:16
Speaker 8: These are the fancy high-end steampunk versions with a mic
• 20:19
Speaker 8: built in, mind you.
• 20:20
Speaker 10: But yeah, where would I get these you wonder?

Speaker 8: crappy ones I bought at the store.
• 20:46
Speaker 10: And I got these and put them in.
• 20:48

• 22:53
  Speaker 6: And I realize.
• 22:57
Speaker 11: The blame is on me Cause I knew you were trouble.
• 23:02
Speaker 9: When you walked in This is Jess Weixler and Jennifer Prediger,
• 23:09
  Speaker 9: and you're listening.
• 23:10
  Speaker 2: To Movie Meltdown.
• 23:14
Speaker 8: Your last one was pretty epic. She started high and
• 23:17
Speaker 8: then she went really low.
• 23:19
Speaker 1: Oh, I did it again.
• 23:21
Speaker 8: You kind of did.
• 23:22
Speaker 9: Weird, but I just joined it this time.
• 23:24
  Speaker 1: That was fun.
• 23:38
Speaker 13: It's part of your problem, you know, you haven't seen
• 23:44
  Speaker 13: enough movies.
• 23:46
  Speaker 5: All of life's.
• 23:47
Speaker 6: Riddles are answered in the movies.
• 23:55
Speaker 2: And now, on with the show. And why were you
• 24:00
  Speaker 2: so cruel?
• 24:04
  Speaker 12: I was just.
• 24:06
Speaker 6: Trying to be alive.
• 24:09
Speaker 8: Okay, so we're heading back to the film fest here.
• 24:11
Speaker 8: But now we're also going to hear some of the
• 24:13
Speaker 8: Q & A that they did after the movie. Jess
• 24:16
Speaker 8: said it was okay to record their conversations. And as
• 24:19
Speaker 8: I listened to it, I definitely wanted to work in
• 24:21
Speaker 8: some of it. Because not only do we learn more
• 24:23
Speaker 8: about the making of this particular film, but also I
• 24:26
Speaker 8: think some really interesting lessons about being an independent filmmaker...
• 24:30
Speaker 8: and even more interesting from the perspective of two first-time directors.
• 24:34
  Speaker 8: So now we'll head to the Q & A with
• 24:36
Speaker 8: Jess and Jennifer, and you'll hear them talking with actor
• 24:39
Speaker 8: William Maypother, who was on hand running the Q & A.
• 24:42
Speaker 8: And then later we'll work in some more of my
• 24:43
Speaker 8: conversation with them as well. So now to the Q
• 24:45
  Speaker 8: & A.
• 24:46
Speaker 12: I'll keep quiet next time And fuck you, I'll keep
• 24:54
Speaker 12: quiet But I live in New York.
• 24:58
Speaker 14: It was a long circuitous path to get there and
• 25:00
Speaker 14: to be an actor, but Jess and I had the
• 25:03
Speaker 14: good fortune of working with the same director who showed
• 25:05
Speaker 14: me this wonderful movie she was in called Alexander the Last.
• 25:09
Speaker 9: And that was really the first time I saw Jess,
• 25:10
Speaker 9: and I just loved her. And I hoped someday we
• 25:13
Speaker 9: would be friends, and then we got really lucky.
• 25:15
  Speaker 2: Super mutual, Jenny.
• 25:19
Speaker 9: And then I was actually leaving New York for a
• 25:22
Speaker 9: little stint, and Jess was coming to New York to
• 25:24
Speaker 9: work on The Good Wife, which she's so great on.
• 25:27
Speaker 2: I love her so much.
• 25:28
Speaker 9: She just lights up that show.
• 25:33
Speaker 2: But she subletted my apartment.
• 25:35
Speaker 9: Thankfully, so I didn't have to pay double rent.
• 25:39
Speaker 2: And I went and worked on another movie, and then
• 25:41
Speaker 2: I came back to New York, and we got to
• 25:42
Speaker 2: be roommates. And within a week of being roommates, we
• 25:45
  Speaker 2: were like.
• 25:47
  Speaker 9: to make something?
• 25:48
  Speaker 3: Yeah!
• 25:48
Speaker 2: And then we just started writing. Can I pick this
• 25:51
  Speaker 2: up a little?
• 25:51
Speaker 1: Can I dive in? I know you're totally wanting to
• 25:53
  Speaker 1: ask questions.
• 25:54
  Speaker 2: No, go ahead.
• 25:58
Speaker 1: We had a producer friend who she had met through
• 26:02
Speaker 1: her boyfriend, a movie that he had worked on called
• 26:05
Speaker 1: Life of Crime, who was like, oh, you guys seem
• 26:08
Speaker 1: like fun and cool. You want to make an indie movie?
• 26:12
Speaker 1: If you can write it.
• 26:13
Speaker 2: In a month and....
• 26:16
Speaker 1: Then we'll go into production, and then you'll have like
• 26:20
Speaker 1: 14 days to shoot it. And so it was a
• 26:23
Speaker 1: bit of a dare, almost.
• 26:25
Speaker 6: You're like, all right.
• 26:26
Speaker 15: For anybody out there who doesn't know, that is extraordinarily fast,
• 26:30
Speaker 15: to both write it and to shoot it.
• 26:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, and so we had to sort of model the
• 26:35
Speaker 1: script and the story structure on things.
• 26:37
Speaker 2: As a child, I used to weep in picture shots.
• 26:40
Speaker 2: LAUGHTER Yes, Withnail and I. That's one of my favorite movies.
• 26:46
  Speaker 2: Withnail and I.
• 26:48
Speaker 13: If anybody wants to see it, it's a fantastic British
• 26:50
  Speaker 13: cult comedy.
• 26:52
Speaker 2: We sort of modeled this movie off of that. We
• 26:55
Speaker 2: both loved that movie weirdly, so that helped.
• 26:57
Speaker 9: But that movie got really panned in the beginning, and
• 27:01
Speaker 9: now it's like this loved, beloved movie, but I kind.
• 27:05
Speaker 2: Of love knowing that people were like, this movie sucks.
• 27:08
  Speaker 2: This is weird.
• 27:09
Speaker 9: George Harrison actually produced it, but We just tried to
• 27:12
  Speaker 9: copy it.
• 27:14
Speaker 2: It's similar to that. We interwove that with The Odd
• 27:18
Speaker 2: Couple and Laverne and Shirley.
• 27:20
Speaker 1: And Dumb and Dumber.
• 27:22
Speaker 2: We were kind of dumb in this movie. Super dumb.
• 27:27
Speaker 1: And we wanted to show the dynamic of codependent relationships
• 27:31
Speaker 1: where one is the narcissist and one is like, The cheerleader.
• 27:36
  Speaker 2: The cheerleader.
• 27:37
Speaker 1: And how those relationships, be it love relationships or friendships,
• 27:41
Speaker 1: how they get so out of tilt, even though there's
• 27:43
Speaker 1: real love there, they have to break because both people
• 27:49
Speaker 1: have to figure out how to be strong. So we
• 27:51
Speaker 1: wanted to explore the nature of codependent love and.
• 27:57
  Speaker 12: What that means.
• 27:58
Speaker 9: But now that we've really experienced codependent love co-directing the movie,
• 28:02
Speaker 9: it would be really fun to see the follow-up because
• 28:04
Speaker 9: now we know so much Not that either one of
• 28:07
Speaker 9: us is the narcissist.
• 28:08
Speaker 2: We're both the narcissist together. You never roomed together, correct?
• 28:16
Speaker 2: We did. Oh, you did for a while?
• 28:17
  Speaker 1: We overlapped.
• 28:18
Speaker 2: And I did have a cat named Pigeon. You can
• 28:21
Speaker 2: see where I'm heading with this.
• 28:22
Speaker 13: Talk about which aspects, if you're willing to, any individual
• 28:25
Speaker 13: moments or aspects of the film that you guys drew
• 28:29
Speaker 13: from your own lives.
• 28:30
  Speaker 1: Cats.
• 28:31
Speaker 2: I was a broke-ass actor, first of all.
• 28:34
Speaker 9: Couldn't pay my electric bill. No, not quite that bad yet.
• 28:40
Speaker 9: But I had a cat who, when Jess and I
• 28:42
Speaker 9: lived together, Jess is actually allergic to cats.
• 28:45
Speaker 2: And I had the most awesome cat, and his name
• 28:48
  Speaker 2: was Pigeon.
• 28:49
Speaker 9: He was only six, and he had like, his heart
• 28:51
Speaker 9: was too big, which is really beautiful in a certain
• 28:54
  Speaker 9: poetic way, and.
• 28:55
Speaker 2: He had a heart attack while we were together.
• 28:59
Speaker 9: And I had to take him to the vet and
• 29:02
Speaker 9: put him down, and that.
• 29:03
Speaker 2: Was awful, and Jess went with me. It was awful.
• 29:07
Speaker 1: Also because I hated the cat, and I didn't treat
• 29:10
Speaker 1: the cat that poorly.
• 29:11
Speaker 2: No. She actually appreciated him. I appreciated him enough, but
• 29:16
Speaker 2: I wouldn't touch him. She was only a good wife.
• 29:18
Speaker 2: She couldn't, like, break out in life.
• 29:20
Speaker 9: I get it. I get it.
• 29:21
Speaker 2: The cat was really.
• 29:23
Speaker 1: But when Jenny was so attached to the cat, when
• 29:26
Speaker 1: the cat died, we were like, ah, this can help
• 29:29
Speaker 1: loop into the idea of having to let things go,
• 29:32
Speaker 1: let relationships go. And so the cat became this kind
• 29:37
Speaker 1: of magical theme for the movie.
• 29:41
Speaker 9: I think the cat made the movie possible. I'm a weirdo,
• 29:45
Speaker 9: just like Olivia, my character. And I think my dead
• 29:49
Speaker 9: cat made this movie possible.
• 29:51
Speaker 2: So if you're looking for financing... Get a dead cat
• 29:57
Speaker 2: spirit to speak to rich people.
• 30:01
Speaker 9: And that's how you make a movie.
• 30:07
Speaker 2: Sorry, it's that weird. It is, it's a weird thing.
• 30:10
Speaker 9: It's like, you've got to get so much money to
• 30:13
Speaker 9: just be foolish and believe in you.
• 30:16
Speaker 2: I mean, that's just kind of what happens.
• 30:18
Speaker 9: And, I mean, thankfully there are some rich people who
• 30:21
Speaker 9: are just foolish and believe in people.
• 30:23
Speaker 2: And thank God. Thank God, because we got to do
• 30:26
Speaker 2: this crazy, wonderful thing together. With all of us. I mean,
• 30:29
Speaker 2: it was like a, I think it was a gift
• 30:31
Speaker 2: to everybody. Everybody enjoyed the process. Even the people who
• 30:36
Speaker 2: shoved out the cash.
• 30:38
Speaker 8: Well, here was my acting question. I guess both of you,
• 30:41
Speaker 8: as you get into this, once you kind of hit
• 30:43
Speaker 8: that point where you decide you're serious and you want
• 30:46
Speaker 8: to get into it, when you get to that point,
• 30:49
Speaker 8: what do you think that you can bring to a
• 30:50
Speaker 8: role that maybe other people can't?
• 30:54
Speaker 1: I think every single person brings something that nobody else can.
• 30:58
Speaker 1: And I'm going to be super cheesy for a second,
• 31:00
Speaker 1: but just as no person is comparable, like some people
• 31:04
Speaker 1: look sort of alike, but we're all really snowflakes people.
• 31:09
Speaker 8: I'm not sure if I'm buying this at all.
• 31:12
Speaker 1: But really, you can see... I'm going to use this
• 31:16
Speaker 1: just as a recent example. You see Hannibal played by
• 31:19
Speaker 1: one of the greatest actors of all time, one of
• 31:21
Speaker 1: the most revered performances of all time.
• 31:24
  Speaker 8: Mads Mikkelsen, sure.
• 31:26
Speaker 1: And then Mads Mikkelsen comes along and you're like, why
• 31:28
Speaker 1: is somebody else trying to play Hannibal? They're never going
• 31:32
Speaker 1: to live up to the hype of all the awards of,
• 31:36
Speaker 1: oh my God, why am I blanking?
• 31:37
  Speaker 9: Anthony Hopkins.
• 31:38
Speaker 1: Anthony Hopkins. Jeez, that's embarrassing. Of Anthony Hopkins. You'll never
• 31:42
Speaker 1: be Anthony Hopkins. He is Hannibal.
• 31:43
  Speaker 11: Hannibal.
• 31:45
Speaker 1: And then Matt Mickelson comes along, completely reinvents the wheel
• 31:47
Speaker 1: and is brilliant in his own way. And I think
• 31:50
Speaker 1: that's true about every single role. Somebody else can come
• 31:53
Speaker 1: in and if they commit fully and give their whole
• 31:56
Speaker 1: person to it, they will be just as fascinating, just
• 32:00
Speaker 1: have different aspects of who they are that are strong
• 32:05
  Speaker 1: in the character.
• 32:06
Speaker 8: But very different. Because I don't know, there are some... Again,
• 32:10
Speaker 8: I've gone on about yours. But I think there's some
• 32:12
Speaker 8: of the performances you've done that I don't think people
• 32:14
Speaker 8: could bring specifics of what you bring to it they
• 32:17
Speaker 8: could bring something else i guess but we don't.
• 32:20
Speaker 1: Like that well that's nice if people want to be
• 32:23
Speaker 1: picky and then pick me or jenny all right.
• 32:26
Speaker 8: So now it's a duel so now you must like
• 32:30
Speaker 8: defend yourself it's time for your rebuttal go.
• 32:34
Speaker 9: Pick us that's what we say pick us.
• 32:38
Speaker 1: Or watch Trouble Dolls, at least. You don't have to
• 32:40
  Speaker 1: pick us.
• 32:41
Speaker 8: It's just our movie.
• 32:43
Speaker 1: It's just 72 minutes of your life. Is that how
• 32:45
  Speaker 1: long it is?
• 32:46
  Speaker 9: 77.
• 32:47
  Speaker 4: 77.
• 32:47
Speaker 1: A good time. Also, Will Forte and Megan Mullally and
• 32:51
Speaker 1: Jeffrey Tambor. We're a little more unknown, but the three
• 32:56
Speaker 1: of them, they're superstars.
• 32:59
Speaker 8: You had the inside track on most of that, right?
• 33:02
Speaker 8: Because you kind of knew... at least your other main leads,
• 33:06
Speaker 8: and you started working them into the screenplay.
• 33:08
Speaker 1: Between the two of us, we were able to fan-doogle them.
• 33:12
Speaker 9: We pieced them together. They did us a solid, all
• 33:16
  Speaker 9: of them.
• 33:17
Speaker 15: And anybody out there who has worked or wants to
• 33:20
Speaker 15: work on an independent film or knows anything about independent
• 33:22
Speaker 15: film knows how difficult it is to get actors who
• 33:25
Speaker 15: have value, recognizable names like Jeffrey, Megan, and Will.
• 33:29
Speaker 2: So talk about how you got them involved.
• 33:31
Speaker 13: Had you worked with them before? Did you send a
• 33:33
Speaker 13: script to their agents or what?
• 33:35
Speaker 9: So what was really cool is that Jess had worked
• 33:37
Speaker 9: with Megan Mullally on a wonderful movie called Somebody Up
• 33:40
Speaker 9: There Likes Me. And then I had worked... with Will
• 33:43
Speaker 9: Forte and played his secretary in the movie called Life
• 33:46
  Speaker 9: of Crime.
• 33:47
Speaker 2: And so we had developed relationships with these amazing, iconic
• 33:52
  Speaker 2: comedy actors.
• 33:54
Speaker 9: And actually, Megan said to Jess at one point while
• 33:57
Speaker 9: they were working together, if you ever do anything, I'll
• 34:00
  Speaker 9: do it.
• 34:01
Speaker 2: So she gets her up.
• 34:03
Speaker 1: What's crazy is that there are so many people in TV.
• 34:07
Speaker 2: The film world has gotten very small. And there's a
• 34:10
Speaker 2: lot less money in film now. And a lot less.
• 34:14
Speaker 1: Movies are being made for any substantial budget. But the
• 34:17
Speaker 1: TV world, this is like the golden era of television.
• 34:20
Speaker 1: And television is amazing right now. But a lot of
• 34:24
Speaker 1: TV actors still want to do film, and there aren't
• 34:26
Speaker 1: that many opportunities. So you can call somebody like Megan Mullally,
• 34:30
Speaker 1: and if they're like, oh, we like.
• 34:31
Speaker 2: You, sure, I haven't done a movie in forever. This
• 34:35
Speaker 2: is the largest part she's ever had in a film,
• 34:38
  Speaker 2: which is crazy.
• 34:39
Speaker 9: I mean, she's an iconic actress from Will & Grace
• 34:43
Speaker 9: and changed our culture in a huge way from what
• 34:46
Speaker 9: she did. I mean, I think for many of us
• 34:48
Speaker 9: who watch Will & Grace, she was the best character.
• 34:52
Speaker 9: show but she you know wants a film career and
• 34:56
Speaker 9: amazingly enough us two you know neophytes got like tap
• 35:02
Speaker 9: into that desire for her and and this was sort
• 35:05
Speaker 9: of like the most kind of what is it dramedy
• 35:08
Speaker 9: it's not dramatic it's not comedic whatever that yeah so
• 35:12
Speaker 9: this is the most common dramatic role that.
• 35:16
Speaker 2: I think she's ever played. And the biggest role she's
• 35:19
Speaker 2: had in any film.
• 35:20
Speaker 9: Which is kind of nuts, knowing how talented and amazing
• 35:23
Speaker 9: she is and how successful she is.
• 35:26
Speaker 1: And Tambor and I just had the same agent. He
• 35:28
Speaker 1: was like, oh, good.
• 35:31
Speaker 2: Her agent is, like, unrelenting, which is really cool.
• 35:35
Speaker 16: Now, had either of you directed at all before, like,
• 35:38
Speaker 16: even a short film or.
• 35:39
  Speaker 5: Anything like that?
• 35:41
Speaker 1: I directed one other thing in my life.
• 35:43
Speaker 2: At Walden Theater as a play. Like when I came back,
• 35:47
  Speaker 2: it was ridiculous.
• 35:51
Speaker 1: And so this challenge for both of us being like,
• 35:54
Speaker 1: can you make a movie in 14 days? With training wheels.
• 35:59
Speaker 2: We were each other's training wheels.
• 36:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, neither of us knowing what we were doing yet
• 36:03
Speaker 1: was like the perfect playground. Because you also had a
• 36:06
Speaker 1: friend when things went wrong and things went wrong constantly,
• 36:13
Speaker 1: just for the stress of all the time and us
• 36:16
Speaker 1: not knowing what we were doing yet.
• 36:19
Speaker 2: And it wound up.
• 36:20
Speaker 1: Being so much more meaningful than I had ever imagined.
• 36:23
Speaker 1: I mean, the issue of friendship, of course, matters. So
• 36:34
Speaker 1: it wound up being like digging quite deep, I think,
• 36:38
Speaker 1: for both of us. We thought we were going to
• 36:41
Speaker 1: make just like a baller comedy, and then we were like, well.
• 36:45
Speaker 2: It's kind of melancholy. These friends break up. Yeah, so
• 36:50
Speaker 2: it wound up being.
• 36:51
Speaker 1: A deeper subject matter than we, I think, originally intended.
• 36:54
Speaker 1: But with Nail and I, it's like that, too.
• 36:57
Speaker 7: It's very much like that. It ends like this.
• 36:58
Speaker 2: It's hysterical, and then it ends, well, you can see it.
• 37:04
Speaker 16: One of the most difficult things that a lot of
• 37:06
Speaker 16: independent filmmakers have to go through, and you kind of
• 37:09
Speaker 16: mentioned in just a couple words, was fundraising.
• 37:12
Speaker 7: And talking to investors.
• 37:13
Speaker 16: And you said, I mean, if I recall, you made
• 37:16
Speaker 16: a mention, oh, you met some guy and he said, well,
• 37:19
Speaker 16: you should make a movie together or something.
• 37:21
Speaker 2: If you're able to talk about it, can.
• 37:23
Speaker 16: You talk about that aspect of the process, about having
• 37:26
Speaker 16: to fundraise or talk to investors or worry about finding
• 37:29
  Speaker 16: money or anything?
• 37:30
Speaker 9: This was like a miracle from the film gods, this movie.
• 37:35
Speaker 9: we met these producers who basically just loved us and said,
• 37:41
Speaker 9: you know, write something and we'll finance it. And it
• 37:44
Speaker 9: was someone I'd worked with on Life of Crime, which
• 37:47
Speaker 9: is this new Elmore Leonard movie.
• 37:51
Speaker 2: That my boyfriend directed, actually.
• 37:53
  Speaker 9: Awesome.
• 37:54
  Speaker 2: Please, publicize it.
• 37:55
  Speaker 8: Is it due?
• 37:56
Speaker 2: When's it due out? It's on Video On Demand. Jennifer
• 38:00
Speaker 2: Aniston is the star. There are amazing people in it.
• 38:02
Speaker 2: Will Forte, Tim Robbins. The name again is? Most definitely,
• 38:06
  Speaker 2: Life of Crime.
• 38:07
  Speaker 7: Life of Crime.
• 38:08
Speaker 2: So these investors produced Life of Crime. They financed Life
• 38:12
  Speaker 2: of Crime.
• 38:13
Speaker 9: And thankfully, Jess and I were just in kind of
• 38:16
Speaker 9: a good orbit in that moment and with each other
• 38:19
Speaker 9: and they saw what we were up to and they
• 38:21
Speaker 9: really liked it and they liked us together and they
• 38:23
Speaker 9: thought we were a really interesting pair.
• 38:26
Speaker 2: And they said, you girls just go.
• 38:28
Speaker 1: I think also they had never produced anything on the
• 38:31
  Speaker 1: ground before.
• 38:32
Speaker 2: They just financed it. We realized while.
• 38:34
Speaker 1: We were shooting, everybody in the position they had, it
• 38:36
Speaker 1: was the first time they had ever been.
• 38:38
Speaker 2: Given that much power. And that's a movie in and
• 38:41
Speaker 2: of itself. It was fascinating. But in a weird way,
• 38:44
Speaker 2: it made everybody want to rise to the occasion and
• 38:46
Speaker 2: prove they could do it. Like our producers had never
• 38:48
Speaker 2: produced before, and they really wanted to show they could
• 38:50
  Speaker 2: do it.
• 38:51
Speaker 1: Our set designer had never been the head of set
• 38:53
Speaker 1: design before, and she killed it.
• 38:55
Speaker 2: No one had done anything.
• 38:57
Speaker 1: So it was a great opportunity for everyone.
• 39:02
Speaker 2: That's why we could afford them.
• 39:05
Speaker 9: Everyone rose to the challenge and it was a really
• 39:07
  Speaker 9: cool thing.
• 39:08
Speaker 1: And we knew when somebody says that to you, like,
• 39:12
Speaker 1: oh yeah, we really like you guys, let's.
• 39:14
Speaker 2: See what you can do. There's this small window of
• 39:17
Speaker 2: time that you have to cash in. Strike while the
• 39:21
  Speaker 2: iron is hot.
• 39:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, and we were like, we've got to write this
• 39:24
Speaker 1: so fast and get it to them now because in
• 39:27
Speaker 1: three months they're going.
• 39:28
Speaker 2: To have said that to 12 other people.
• 39:30
Speaker 9: So we just ran with it. And we spent every
• 39:33
Speaker 9: day with each other. And Jess lived in Los Angeles
• 39:37
Speaker 9: and I lived in New York at a certain point.
• 39:38
Speaker 9: So we were, you know, even if we weren't in
• 39:41
Speaker 9: the same city, we were still together all day on
• 39:44
  Speaker 9: the phone.
• 39:45
Speaker 2: We would just hear each other breathe.
• 39:47
Speaker 9: While we were writing, like we just spent so much time.
• 39:51
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 39:52
Speaker 2: Like, what are you writing now? Hold on, give me
• 39:55
Speaker 2: a minute, I have to finish.
• 39:59
Speaker 13: Talk about what your plan was for how you would
• 40:02
Speaker 13: co-direct and then how.
• 40:03
  Speaker 2: It actually worked.
• 40:06
Speaker 1: I don't know that we had a plan, basically because
• 40:09
Speaker 1: we had so little time, because we just like, we
• 40:11
Speaker 1: speed wrote it and then we speed shot it. we
• 40:16
Speaker 1: were kind of in it, I mean, we were shooting
• 40:19
Speaker 1: 11 pages a day. We would get like one or
• 40:21
Speaker 1: two takes of everything and have to move on.
• 40:23
  Speaker 2: With Jeffrey Tambor.
• 40:26
Speaker 1: With people that we wanted to impress, because like Jeffrey
• 40:31
Speaker 1: and Will and Megan are so big and great.
• 40:35
Speaker 2: But they were game, and we just kind of did
• 40:37
  Speaker 2: everything together.
• 40:38
Speaker 1: We would whisper in each other's ears and decide what
• 40:42
Speaker 1: to say so that we weren't contradicting.
• 40:44
Speaker 2: Each other out loud. just in each other's ears quietly.
• 40:48
Speaker 1: Yeah, we did a lot of, like, whispering, and then
• 40:50
Speaker 1: one of us would decide what to say to the group.
• 40:53
Speaker 2: Stop doing it that way. It's terrible. Jenny, don't whisper
• 40:58
Speaker 2: into the mic. That's just so you know what it
• 41:02
  Speaker 2: was like.
• 41:03
Speaker 9: It was so great. I mean, and I feel like
• 41:05
Speaker 9: our powers combined really drew a lot to the project that, like,
• 41:10
Speaker 9: we wouldn't have probably gotten on our own, so it
• 41:12
Speaker 9: was really cool to see, like, what we were each
• 41:15
Speaker 9: like together able to like magnetize to it and it
• 41:19
Speaker 9: just was so much fun to like be like oh.
• 41:21
Speaker 1: My god it was really fun to make something with
• 41:23
  Speaker 1: a friend yeah I think if you're going I think
• 41:26
Speaker 1: directing can be such a lonely thing editing can be
• 41:30
Speaker 1: such a lonely thing and to have a friend like
• 41:33
Speaker 1: right by your side through it all made it made
• 41:36
Speaker 1: it a process that was for lack of a better
• 41:39
Speaker 1: word more than bearable exciting yeah yeah.
• 41:43
Speaker 8: Wasn't something that there were moments of clashing on creative decisions?
• 41:48
  Speaker 9: No.
• 41:48
  Speaker 1: Never.
• 41:50
Speaker 9: I'm not buying that either.
• 41:52
Speaker 1: Just once. Just one time. The bruises faded around my neck.
• 41:58
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 41:59
Speaker 9: Save the drama for the screen, Jess. We had our moments.
• 42:04
Speaker 9: We had some really funny moments. Amazing moments in movie
• 42:08
Speaker 9: making history. Can I tell it?
• 42:11
Speaker 8: I think you should.
• 42:13
Speaker 9: Um, So there was like this moment. Can I say
• 42:16
Speaker 9: the F word here?
• 42:17
  Speaker 7: No, please do.
• 42:18
Speaker 9: Okay, so there's a moment in the screenplay where one
• 42:22
Speaker 9: character says to the other, get the fuck out of
• 42:25
  Speaker 9: my face.
• 42:25
Speaker 1: No, shut your fucking, oh wait.
• 42:27
Speaker 9: I think it was like.
• 42:28
Speaker 1: I want you to shut your fucking face.
• 42:30
Speaker 9: I want you to shut your fucking face. Something like that.
• 42:33
Speaker 9: And then Jess and I were having like a disagreement.
• 42:35
Speaker 9: We were like racing down the street in New York
• 42:37
Speaker 9: and I like quoted the line verbatim at her in
• 42:41
Speaker 9: a fit of phrase.
• 42:41
Speaker 1: You know what's amazing though is it's my.
• 42:43
Speaker 2: Line in the movie.
• 42:45
Speaker 1: She looks at me and we're in a fight and
• 42:46
Speaker 1: she's like, I want you to shut your fucking face.
• 42:48
Speaker 9: And I was like, that's my line.
• 42:54
Speaker 8: I wrote that one anyway. Just stealing my stuff.
• 42:58
Speaker 1: I stole your line in a fight. You really sold
• 43:02
  Speaker 1: it though.
• 43:03
Speaker 9: I know. I really delivered on that one. It's so
• 43:06
Speaker 9: funny to think about that now though. And I feel
• 43:08
Speaker 9: like we're like the better, all the better for it.
• 43:11
Speaker 9: Like we've become such good friends because we can weather
• 43:14
Speaker 9: a storm together too. And now we just laugh about
• 43:17
Speaker 9: that stuff because it's so funny.
• 43:20
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 43:21
Speaker 1: I imagine that's what saves a lot of relationships is
• 43:24
Speaker 1: if you have a similar enough sense of humor. Yeah.
• 43:27
Speaker 1: Because shit's going to hit the fan with anyone.
• 43:30
  Speaker 4: Definitely.
• 43:31
Speaker 8: Especially being packed together. I mean, as much as you
• 43:34
Speaker 8: had to log in to write and direct and get
• 43:37
Speaker 8: this done and be co-stars.
• 43:39
  Speaker 9: We were attached.
• 43:40
Speaker 8: A lot of time.
• 43:43
Speaker 13: I have some more questions, but at this point, if
• 43:45
Speaker 13: anybody wants to chime in with one, please raise your hand.
• 43:48
Speaker 2: Okay, go ahead. I'm curious about the artwork. How did
• 43:52
Speaker 2: you find the artist? Did you tell them what you wanted,
• 43:54
Speaker 2: or just throw it loose?
• 43:56
Speaker 1: One of our close friends is an eccentric artist, kind
• 44:00
Speaker 1: of like Nicole, who had this weird.
• 44:04
Speaker 2: I don't know if you saw in the apartment.
• 44:05
Speaker 1: Like, all the hands filled with sand going down the ladder.
• 44:10
Speaker 2: I think she called that thing, like, the masses.
• 44:13
Speaker 1: Like she was very serious and like her titles are
• 44:18
  Speaker 1: all quite pretentious.
• 44:21
Speaker 2: But they meant something. What did you call it? I
• 44:24
Speaker 2: called it latex misunderstanding. But we let her.
• 44:33
Speaker 1: Just sort of take over and work with our set
• 44:35
Speaker 1: designer who hadn't been the head person before.
• 44:42
Speaker 2: And just let them go to town and talk with them.
• 44:43
Speaker 1: About, like, oh, we want this to be about, like,
• 44:46
Speaker 1: letting things go, ephemerality, riding on sand, riding on.
• 44:49
Speaker 2: Water, all things pass.
• 44:53
Speaker 1: And so we tried to make every single thing a
• 44:55
Speaker 1: theme of that. Like, although some of them, like the
• 44:58
Speaker 1: dripping popsicles, we thought it would be, like, the dripping,
• 45:01
  Speaker 1: but we're like.
• 45:01
Speaker 2: Fine, it's just popsicles hanging there, but they look cool.
• 45:04
Speaker 9: And our friend Amber, she really did a cool thing
• 45:08
Speaker 9: because she tried to embody.
• 45:10
  Speaker 2: Jess's character.
• 45:12
Speaker 9: And really created art from a character perspective instead of
• 45:17
  Speaker 9: from her own.
• 45:18
Speaker 2: Perspective, which I think was a new thing for her.
• 45:20
Speaker 9: And I think she really enjoyed it, and it was
• 45:22
Speaker 9: really cool. I mean, even working with costume designers was
• 45:25
Speaker 9: a similar thing, where the costume designer sort of dives
• 45:29
Speaker 9: down into who the characters are and thinks about how
• 45:33
Speaker 9: they would be feeling emotionally and why they would wear
• 45:35
Speaker 9: a certain thing. You know, my character was very comfort-based,
• 45:39
Speaker 9: and so she wore a lot of, like, comfort clothing,
• 45:44
Speaker 9: and we would talk about the emotionality behind that. So
• 45:47
Speaker 9: I think a lot of that went into the art
• 45:49
Speaker 9: of Nicole, too, and it was really cool that our.
• 45:53
Speaker 2: Friend who's an artist, like, took on this persona.
• 45:55
Speaker 1: It was fascinating directing for the first time, knowing really
• 46:00
Speaker 1: what a collaboration it all is. That what gets on
• 46:03
Speaker 1: the screen, I mean... Directing is really just sort of
• 46:07
Speaker 1: like trying to put the right people together and time
• 46:12
Speaker 1: management and making sure that everybody knows what each scene
• 46:16
Speaker 1: is sort of supposed to be about. But just finding
• 46:20
Speaker 1: the right cast in the crew that was involved and
• 46:25
Speaker 1: letting everybody feel like they were doing what they wanted
• 46:28
Speaker 1: to do. Yeah, it was like an honor to sort
• 46:33
Speaker 1: of have people make things and give them to us
• 46:37
  Speaker 1: for no money.
• 46:39
Speaker 2: It was really sweet.
• 46:39
Speaker 9: Because there are like a million creative decisions that go
• 46:42
Speaker 9: into making a movie, like from the earrings you see
• 46:45
Speaker 9: on a character to how their hair is to what
• 46:47
Speaker 9: their makeup's like to what their clothes is like to
• 46:49
Speaker 9: what's on the walls. And it's so many variables that
• 46:53
Speaker 9: it just, like, it's so much to think about. So
• 46:56
Speaker 9: to have so many people, like, in the milieu with
• 46:59
Speaker 9: us that we're all thinking about Trying to occupy the
• 47:03
Speaker 9: same mind space that we were in and bring these
• 47:06
Speaker 9: characters to life was really a cool thing.
• 47:10
  Speaker 1: Here's one.
• 47:11
Speaker 2: Another issue that a lot of filmmakers have is getting permission.
• 47:14
Speaker 13: One place that's famously difficult to get permission to shoot
• 47:18
Speaker 13: is on and in the New York subway. So I
• 47:22
Speaker 13: suspect there may be a story.
• 47:24
Speaker 2: Ah, I just saw the cock in the eyebrows.
• 47:26
  Speaker 1: There's a story there.
• 47:27
Speaker 2: We had permission to do everything.
• 47:30
Speaker 9: All of it was legal, and there are no problems
• 47:33
Speaker 9: with what we did.
• 47:34
Speaker 1: I think we told an interviewer right before we came
• 47:37
Speaker 1: up here tonight that we were going to get arrested
• 47:39
Speaker 1: before the end of the night to, like, raise our cred.
• 47:41
Speaker 1: Because after you have, like, a record, you're so much cooler.
• 47:45
Speaker 1: So let's just go on record that was illegal. Okay.
• 47:50
Speaker 1: We just went into the subway with backpacks and most
• 47:54
Speaker 1: of those people were not with us.
• 47:55
Speaker 2: We stationed a few people.
• 47:58
Speaker 9: And a huge Arri Alexa camera, which is an amazing
• 48:02
Speaker 9: kind of big, you know, like really noticeable camera.
• 48:05
Speaker 13: You don't hide it under your coat.
• 48:06
Speaker 2: No. They like pulled it out of a double bag.
• 48:09
Speaker 1: I'm sure people thought we were going to like pull
• 48:11
Speaker 1: out a big weapon or something. It looked like an Uzi.
• 48:14
Speaker 2: He suddenly just hoisted it up and like put it
• 48:16
Speaker 2: in the middle of the train.
• 48:18
Speaker 9: And I really did do that on the subway in
• 48:22
Speaker 9: New York multiple times, much to Jess's chagrin, I'm sure.
• 48:26
  Speaker 9: But it was.
• 48:29
Speaker 2: I've always wanted to do that. I've always wanted to
• 48:31
Speaker 2: get up and talk to people.
• 48:32
Speaker 9: Because there are people, I don't know if you've been
• 48:33
Speaker 9: to New York, but there are always people that are like,
• 48:36
Speaker 9: excuse me, ladies and gentlemen.
• 48:38
Speaker 2: And then they have a whole spiel. So I wanted
• 48:41
Speaker 2: to make it a spiel about humanity.
• 48:44
Speaker 1: And those guys that were dancing, we always wanted dancers
• 48:50
Speaker 1: in the subway, but our producers were like, look, this
• 48:52
  Speaker 1: is already illegal.
• 48:53
Speaker 2: We can't pull this off. We aren't going to get dancers. Sorry,
• 48:56
Speaker 2: you don't get Not all your dreams come true.
• 48:59
Speaker 1: Yes, suckers. We show up, and there are guys dancing
• 49:04
  Speaker 1: while we're there.
• 49:06
Speaker 2: And there are people that are pinching each other.
• 49:09
Speaker 9: No, there are people that our producer had seen earlier
• 49:14
Speaker 9: in the day working out at a jungle gym in
• 49:16
  Speaker 9: the city.
• 49:17
Speaker 2: So our producer had connected.
• 49:20
Speaker 9: With the same guys who were flipping from the bars
• 49:22
Speaker 9: and the subway like four hours before.
• 49:24
Speaker 2: In a dark part of town. She had seen them
• 49:26
Speaker 2: in a different part of the world that day.
• 49:28
Speaker 9: It was just like the film gods again smiled down
• 49:31
Speaker 9: on us and made this weird thing that we both
• 49:33
  Speaker 9: wanted possible.
• 49:34
Speaker 2: And then there you go.
• 49:35
Speaker 9: We suddenly have people.
• 49:36
Speaker 1: And we approached them and we were like, hey, can
• 49:38
Speaker 1: we give you 60 bucks to like hang out with us?
• 49:41
Speaker 1: And it's like hour and a half as we go
• 49:44
Speaker 1: up and down and we're gone.
• 49:46
Speaker 8: All right. Well, we'll wrap up here. I guess tell
• 49:48
Speaker 8: people where to find your movie. What's the best way
• 49:51
Speaker 8: for them to go out and get it?
• 49:53
Speaker 1: Well, eventually it will be on VOD.
• 49:57
Speaker 9: iTunes. Stuff like that. Maybe Netflix.
• 50:00
Speaker 1: Maybe a few theaters.
• 50:01
Speaker 9: We're still waiting for all that stuff to come together.
• 50:04
Speaker 1: We're going to work out the details.
• 50:05
Speaker 8: We'll drive it over to your house.
• 50:06
Speaker 9: Just Google Trouble Dolls whenever you feel like it.
• 50:09
Speaker 8: As often as possible.
• 50:10
Speaker 1: Or follow us on Twitter and we'll totally let you
• 50:13
Speaker 1: know when either our friends are doing awesome things or
• 50:19
Speaker 1: when we think you're doing awesome things.
• 50:22
Speaker 8: I just randomly write to you and tell you when
• 50:24
Speaker 8: I saw you somewhere. I'm like, yep, watching Good Wife.
• 50:28
Speaker 8: There she is again.
• 50:30
Speaker 1: And I love the favorite button.
• 50:33
Speaker 8: We pass the word along.
• 50:35
  Speaker 1: Thank you, Brian.
• 50:36
Speaker 8: Thank you for joining us.
• 50:37
Speaker 9: Thanks for having us. That was awesome. I love Louisville.
• 50:41
  Speaker 9: We did it.
• 50:43
  Speaker 8: Thank you.
• 50:44
Speaker 10: Has she been telling you the right way to say it?
• 50:46
Speaker 2: For like years now, she's been telling me that. I
• 50:48
Speaker 2: was like, you're wrong.
• 50:50
  Speaker 11: All right.
• 50:50
Speaker 8: Well, that about wraps things up here. I did want
• 50:52
Speaker 8: to give a big thank you to IF Film Fest
• 50:54
Speaker 8: and everyone at the Louisville Film Society for letting us
• 50:57
Speaker 8: record this and several more upcoming segments during the festival.
• 51:00
Speaker 8: They put together a terrific lineup of films and it
• 51:03
Speaker 8: has been great to work with them. For more on
• 51:05
Speaker 8: their organization and what they have in the works, go
• 51:07
Speaker 8: to louisvillefilm.org and seek out Trouble Dolls. It's not just
• 51:11
Speaker 8: a fun movie, it's got moments that are so damned hilarious,
• 51:17
Speaker 8: I almost injured myself laughing. There was a scene, Jess
• 51:21
Speaker 8: is running around delivering one of the most hilarious performances
• 51:25
Speaker 8: in the adorable way that only Jess can. And then
• 51:28
Speaker 8: Jennifer is there, just the rock. She is just ignoring
• 51:31
Speaker 8: her and delivering these great lines. It's an amazing scene.
• 51:34
Speaker 8: You'll know it when you see it. It sort of
• 51:36
Speaker 8: defines that half of the movie. So yes, definitely check
• 51:41
Speaker 8: it out. It's fun, but along the way, as they said,
• 51:43
Speaker 8: there's some surprisingly poignant moments. So I urge you to
• 51:47
Speaker 8: go find it, check it out. And then, as they said,
• 51:49
Speaker 8: go find them on Twitter and then tell them you
• 51:51
Speaker 8: heard about the movie on Movie Meltdown. All right, well,
• 51:55
Speaker 8: thanks to the Film Fest and Jess and Jennifer. Okay,
• 51:57
Speaker 8: enough with the thank yous already.
• 51:58
Speaker 11: Thank you for nothing.
• 51:59
  Speaker 4: Oh, no, wait.
• 52:00
Speaker 8: I'm just rolling into our closing song, which is also
• 52:02
Speaker 8: the closing song for the movie provided by Elizabeth and
• 52:06
Speaker 8: the Catapult. Otherwise, that about does it. We will return
• 52:08
Speaker 8: next time. Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
• 52:11
Speaker 11: Thank you for everything. Thank you for nothing. My brother,
• 52:19
Speaker 11: there is no in-between. Never one without the other I
• 52:27
Speaker 11: may not know anything But I think I'm onto something
• 52:35
Speaker 11: For every door opening There's another one slowly closing Thank
• 52:52
Speaker 11: you for loving me Thank you for leaving Thank you
• 53:00
Speaker 11: for promising And then promptly forgetting.
• 53:07
  Speaker 1: For the gifts.
• 53:08
Speaker 11: That were given Just to be taken for granted Studied
• 53:16
Speaker 11: indifference Can't turn to careless Once disenchanted With a glass
• 53:24
Speaker 11: that was filled Then just as easily broken Thank you
• 53:32
Speaker 11: for everything And thank you for nothing Mmm Thank you
• 53:52
Speaker 11: for trusting me and then biting the bullet Thank you
• 54:00
Speaker 11: for laughing out loud even when you.
• 54:03
  Speaker 1: Don't mean it.
• 54:07
Speaker 11: They say hurting is growing if you believe when.
• 54:11
  Speaker 9: You say it.
• 54:15
Speaker 11: So I'll just keep saying it Thank you, thank you
• 54:19
Speaker 11: I'll just keep saying it Thank you, thank you I'll
• 54:24
Speaker 11: just keep saying it Thank.
• 54:26
Speaker 1: You, thank you I'll just.
• 54:28
Speaker 11: Keep saying it Thank you, thank you Thank you for
• 54:33
Speaker 11: everything Thank you for nothing at all Thank you for nothing.
• 54:53
Speaker 11: Thank you for nothing at all.
• 54:58
Speaker 2: It's not legal to tell this story. This is not legal.
• 55:01
  Speaker 1: This story is.
• 55:02
Speaker 2: Not going to be on this list. Keep it in Louisville.
• 55:05
Speaker 2: Do not tell anyone about it.
• 55:08
Speaker 1: It would be so much cooler if we actually got arrested.
• 55:10
Speaker 1: I feel like we honestly need to get it on
• 55:12
Speaker 1: our record so that we have some legitimacy.
• 55:13
Speaker 9: So we could be real trouble dolls.
• 55:15
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 55:16
  Speaker 9: Maybe tonight.
• 55:17
