Jasper Rees’s biography traces Michael Gambon’s career and contradictions
Jasper Rees wrote an authorized biography of Michael Gambon, detailing his acting career. A toolmaker from southeast London, Gambon began with a fake résumé and made his professional debut in 1962. Hired by Laurence Olivier for the new National Theatre in 1963, he struggled with demanding roles and left in 1967, returning in 1978. He performed in Harold Pinter’s *Betrayal* and Bertolt Brecht’s *The Life of Galileo*, which established him as a leading stage actor. His role in the BBC series *The Singing Detective* made him a household name in 1986.
