- 0:00Ah. My name is Mate nine, and I'm in a band called I
- 0:04Hate God and we're coming to Australia and New Zealand in July. I don't
- 0:09know the dates off top of my head, but and we're bringing a New
- 0:14Orleans band called Goadhoorr with us, who are awesome. Very good mate,
- 0:19Thanks for joining us today, mate, Yeah, sure, no problem.
- 0:23Good to be here. Lucky for everyone. I've got the dates for us.
- 0:26Bro. So I Hate God returned to Australia and New Zealand this month
- 0:30because for a run of shows starting in Perth on July the twenty third,
- 0:34then hitting Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney before finishing in Brisbane on July the twenty
- 0:38eighth. Then you had to New Zealand for shows in Wellington and Utan.
- 0:41Made like, do you let yourself get excited this far out from a show
- 0:45or do you sort of wait till you're on the plane ready to go and
- 0:47it just saw things in No, I'm excited now. I love Australia.
- 0:53I love coming over there. It's great. You know this will be our
- 0:57fourth time I believe coming over so wow, that's good. It's always the
- 1:03people are great. We have a good time, you know. Yeah,
- 1:06sweet, it's been five years. So it's been five years since your last
- 1:11visit in two thousand and nineteen. Bro, So what's changed with I Hate
- 1:15God since last time? Not much really, I mean we're still in the
- 1:21same band, you know, we're actually well, I think actually in twenty
- 1:25nineteen, though Jimmy Bauer, our guitar player, wasn't with us. He
- 1:29couldn't make the tours, so we had a film and guitarist. But the
- 1:33shows went well and everything went cool. I think people want to see Jimmy
- 1:37though, so he'll be there this time and it'll be great. Yeah.
- 1:42And in that time as well, your album A History of Nomadic Behavior came
- 1:46out as well, bro, So because you haven't played that here before.
- 1:49Are you going to be focusing on that album or is it going to be
- 1:52a mixture of everything. It's a mixture of everything. We do some songs
- 1:56off that record, but most people still want to hear like the older stuff,
- 2:00you know, that's the classic stuff we've done in the nineties, you
- 2:04know, so, but we do throw in stuff off the new records,
- 2:07you know, for sure, the new record of the last two records,
- 2:13So yeah, it'll be a mixture of everything. Oh now, I hope
- 2:17I got my facts rot on this. Otherwise I'm gonna say I'm pretty stupid.
- 2:21But you've named the tour after a song on your two thousand and five
- 2:24album Pretty in Free Message, so that there was no mention of a special
- 2:28occasion in the press release. And it's only nineteen years since that album came
- 2:31out, so it can't be a twentieth anniversary. So why is it to
- 2:35it named after that? Just because we picked that to be the name,
- 2:39that's it. There's no reason for it, right, Yeah. I mean
- 2:44we uh, A lot of things we do don't make any sense, so
- 2:47it's fun. It's also fun to confuse people as well. So but yeah,
- 2:53that's it's just a cool name. We never used it for a tour,
- 2:57so we figured why out. You know, Hey, I thought think
- 2:59it's a great name. I was reading through it. God, yeah,
- 3:00that's cool, and then I was looking through the album It's like, where
- 3:02the hell does it come from? That is cool? Yeah? Yeah,
- 3:07it's from an album that came out in two thousand and three. We did
- 3:12a song called that Yeah, right, that was basically a live album,
- 3:15wasn't it? There was three three originals on there and the rest of the
- 3:17lives. It was a compilation, is what it was. It was like
- 3:22all our seven inches and then some live stuff and you know, just and
- 3:25three new songs that we did on a four track. They don't even like
- 3:30they're not even mastered or mixed or anything. We just did the three new
- 3:32ones like raw as we possibly could. Yes, Well, you're just saying
- 3:37that you like to confuse people, mate, so you're gonna confuse them even
- 3:39more by not playing that song on this tour. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 3:45Jimmy doesn't want to play that song, so I wouldn't want to play
- 3:47that song. But maybe maybe we'll learn it by then. But yeah,
- 3:53that is pretty funny. I just realized that, Yeah, maybe maybe we
- 3:57won't learn it for the tour. I don't know. Did you mentioned before
- 4:02that you're bringing the Brutal Goat Hall with you? By right of you?
- 4:06Then the other night, great, great bunch of lads, But why choose
- 4:10amatory partners with you? Uh? They're just old friends of ours and we've
- 4:15been going to shows and playing with their various bands and our various bands since
- 4:21the late eighties, you know, or the early nineties. You know,
- 4:24we've been friends with these guys so and they were in different bands at the
- 4:29time, but Godhoor has now been around for a while. But they're just
- 4:32New Orleans, you know, friends of ours, and we toured with them
- 4:36in America and it went very well. So we're looking forward to doing it
- 4:41again. Oh all righton tell you plus the fact, if you put the
- 4:45two bad names together, you got the foundations for a hell of a tour
- 4:47story. Oh yeah, it's gonna get crazy. It's gonna get it'll definitely
- 4:55get weird at some point. We're just such good frins of these guys and
- 4:59they'll be parties and things that there might be fist fights, but we'll see.
- 5:03I'll put my money on you, brother. When I spoke to him
- 5:10the other day, like, I don't normally ask bans about how they came
- 5:12up with their name, but I had to ask those guys, and the
- 5:15story they gave me was a sensational you know, I don't even know the
- 5:19reason they're called that. I don't even know that. You know, you're
- 5:24going to have to watch my interview with him. Well, yeah, right,
- 5:29I know there's a certific element somewhere in there, but it's got to
- 5:32do with goats and naked women. But I'll leave it at that. That
- 5:36makes total sense. Yeah, I was expecting something like, you know,
- 5:42something a bit more sanitized, so I guess, but he gave me the
- 5:46full fact and it was great. Yeah, yeah, I'm glad he just
- 5:49gave me the honest answer. Well good, all right, So what You've
- 5:55also got some local bands opening at each show with Flight Prison, some Doown,
- 6:00choof Aslo and Defiant Grave, all sort of all getting the chance in
- 6:04their respective local towns. So hats off to you brother, Like it's a
- 6:08good initiative. So many bands come over here and they neglect the local bands,
- 6:13I guess, but it's good to see you give them a chance.
- 6:15No, we you know, we we still have that punk rock ethics,
- 6:19you know that we love to get the local bands done the shows, you
- 6:23know, like give them a chance to play, and then like we we
- 6:27like to check out the local stuff anyway. So it's like gone to old
- 6:30school with that, you know, Hey, good only blets they Hats off
- 6:33to your brother. There's so many bands come over here for one reason or
- 6:36another, local bands don't get a look in. But I've got spoken to
- 6:41some of them personally, and the excitement and these bands and the things it
- 6:44does for their their confidence. I guess it's it's bands like you guys go
- 6:48home and these guys live with that for the rest of their life. Bro,
- 6:51So hats off, no, And they're all these guys that are helping
- 6:57to promote the shows too. They're posting about it and all this stuff.
- 7:00So it's going to get more people out. So it's a good thing,
- 7:05all right, bray we I would want to go back to the early days,
- 7:09like for the band. So you started in New Orleans back in nineteen
- 7:13eighty eight, So what was a musical climate like the kame Birth I Hate
- 7:16God and where did you fit in back in the old days. We didn't
- 7:20fit in at all. People hated us, people couldn't stand us. We
- 7:25had a very few fans locally. The climate back then was mostly still thrash
- 7:31metal, you know, like bands doing the Exodus Slayer type of thing or
- 7:40I mean, there was a lot of different styles, but there was,
- 7:42you know, some hardcore punk bands and then there was like the thrash stuff,
- 7:46you know, so there wasn't a lot new going on at the time.
- 7:48I guess industrial stuff was kind of happening too, but like the dance
- 7:54or stuff like that. But we just, you know, we were big
- 7:59fans, you know, Saint Vitus and Black Sabbath and Black Flag and all
- 8:03these bands, so we were like, we let's just do that. That's
- 8:07what we wanted to do. We all were in other bands at the time,
- 8:11so this was like our side project, you know. So we didn't
- 8:16take it that series in the beginning because we all had other bands that we
- 8:20were doing. So this became the biggest out of any of our other bands.
- 8:24So it's pretty strange that we're still doing it thirty six years later,
- 8:30thirty five years later or whatever. Okay, that's awesome. Yeah, that's
- 8:33all. You mentioned bands before like Black Plague and Black Sabbath, and there's
- 8:37also others like the Melvins. There's crazy to conform all these bands that influence
- 8:41you, guys, but you've definitely created a sound of your own from it.
- 8:45So this is a question well for your bands bands coming through bright but
- 8:48like when you are coming up and trying to create your own sound from the
- 8:52influencers, like how fond of a line is there between imitation and inspiration?
- 8:56And where do you draw that line. I mean it definitely in the beginning
- 9:00we would play like a couple of Melvin's rifts, you know, and just
- 9:03to see where it was going. But uh, I think that comes down
- 9:07to like Jimmy Bauer's like creativity, you know, and uh and our drummer
- 9:11you know who he passed away, Joey. They had a very creative way
- 9:16of doing the stuff that we wanted to do and kind of combining it all
- 9:20along with the punk rock thing too, like the Melvins type stuff with the
- 9:24punk stuff and the hardcore stuff and even some like noisy stuff with all the
- 9:28feedback. You know. They just were very creative and putting that all together.
- 9:33So hopefully it didn't sound derivative or you know. I mean, we
- 9:37don't hide our influences. We tell people, like, you know, what's
- 9:41influences, so they can probably pick out something here or there and know that
- 9:46it's, you know, influenced by certain bands. But we definitely don't want
- 9:48to copy anyone. We wanted to be one percent original, you know.
- 9:54Yeah. Ther music's also got a massive blues influence, especially with the guitars.
- 9:58Bro Like a lot of people would not or appreciate the fact, but
- 10:01blues does have a very good history with hav you metaled on that, Yeah,
- 10:07of course. I mean it's a blues based music, and you know
- 10:11rock and roll is blues based anyway, so it all comes together for me.
- 10:16But we we listened to a lot of you know, like Lightnin' Hopkins
- 10:20and John Lee Hooker and Mississippi John Hurt and all these bands. We love
- 10:24that stuff so and being from the South where we're from New Orleans, you
- 10:30know, you hear a lot of that, you know, coming out of
- 10:31clubs and bars and stuff, so it definitely influenced us. Yeah, it's
- 10:37a great, great amalgamation of stalls, Brian. Like I said, you
- 10:41put it all together and it comes out definitely your own. But there's stuff
- 10:43in there that people wouldn't even think should go together, but when it does,
- 10:48it's just fucking magic. Oh thanks man. Yeah, I mean there's
- 10:52even the southern rock thing too, because we're huge Leonard skinnerd fans, you
- 10:56know. Yeah, so there's like riffs here and there, little little parts
- 11:01that definitely influenced by Leonard Skinner and the southern rock stuff, you know,
- 11:07which we all grew up with. Also, you know we've speaken before about
- 11:11your last album, A History of Nomadic Behavior, which came out in twenty
- 11:15twenty one. So have you started work on the follow up you made or
- 11:18have you just been busy touring. We just been touring a lot. But
- 11:22I know those guys are writing some new stuff, you know, so I
- 11:28think they've got a couple things put together, but nothing fully formed yet.
- 11:33You know, it always takes us a long time in between albums to get
- 11:37the next one done. I mean, this one was was this the last
- 11:43one? It took a long time between the last two albums, and it
- 11:48seems to always take that. But well, we won't get something out eventually,
- 11:52you know, we're definitely right. Yeah yeah, But when you do
- 11:56get to help people know it's going to be quality because you haven't rushed it
- 12:00too. So it's a win win. Well, that's part of it.
- 12:03That's what I like to tell people. It's like, we're not one of
- 12:05these bands that like tours then go in the studio and writes it in the
- 12:09studio. We you know, we like to take our time and write and
- 12:13sit with it. That way too, You get to sit with the songs
- 12:16for a while. And you get to know them better and if you start
- 12:20to not like it, you may change something when you go in the studio
- 12:24or you know. So it's good to sit with it like that, Dame
- 12:28Spender, right, Michael, Thanks very much for your time today, Bro,
- 12:30it's been a pleasure chatting with you. I Hate are in Australia from
- 12:33July twenty thirty Perth, all around the country, including New Zealand with a
- 12:37fantastic code hole. So until then, brother, you take care. Yes,
- 12:41thanks for the interview and we'll see you later. We'll see you soon.
