- 0:53Well, hello, and welcome into another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:57Today's episode features co host, Jennica Hauser interviewing founder and host of The
- 1:04Scene Bubba Starts.
- 1:05Here's the interview.
- 1:07Alright.
- 1:07Yeah.
- 1:09My how the table has turned.
- 1:11I know.
- 1:11Isn't this interesting?
- 1:12Fun.
- 1:14Well, now it's your turn in the hot seat.
- 1:16Yes.
- 1:17It is.
- 1:17And so I get to be the the cool presenter.
- 1:19Today, we are here with the illustrious Bubba Starts from the phenomenal music group starts
- 1:26and ends.
- 1:26And you can catch him performing all over the place.
- 1:29But he's got more than just good music going on.
- 1:32He's he's involved in a whole scene.
- 1:34You should tell us about it.
- 1:36Well, thank you.
- 1:37Thank you for putting me in this precarious situation.
- 1:41I enjoy it.
- 1:42So, yeah, we have a lot going on, don't we?
- 1:44Starts and ends has had a heck of a summer playing music all over, South Dakota.
- 1:48Got to tour out of state a little bit this year.
- 1:51And, we created a podcast network.
- 1:53The Scene Projects is growing quickly.
- 1:58It's, it's been a dream come true.
- 2:00We're we're connecting.
- 2:00We're growing a community every single day, and, I'm just so thrilled to have something to
- 2:06share that all of my friends can be involved in.
- 2:10Right?
- 2:10I've always had a band.
- 2:12I've always done that, but it's always limited.
- 2:14Right?
- 2:15You have to be able to play an instrument or sing to be in a band.
- 2:17Well, to be part of this group now, you don't have to be able to do anything.
- 2:21Just bring you bring your energy, and we'll find where you fit in.
- 2:24Well, it's cool because the way you have it set up is where it's not really based out of one
- 2:28specific area so much as you just can take this anywhere.
- 2:32It's nodes.
- 2:33Right?
- 2:33It's it's central hubs wherever we can land and then having the smaller nodes where we can land
- 2:39and do some things.
- 2:41And and it's just we're just getting started growing this.
- 2:43So to see where we grow from here, obviously, the Black Hills, where I grew up, my home.
- 2:51This is obviously a very special place to me and will be a home, but, you know, for right
- 2:56now, headquarters is, by all intents and purposes, Sioux Falls, we're kinda growing from
- 3:02our major metro area and seeing where it goes from there.
- 3:05Yeah.
- 3:06And it well, and I have no doubts that it's gonna be growing pretty large because as you
- 3:10said, there's a lot of stuff going on.
- 3:12And on top of of hosting the the podcast and going and doing all these performances, you
- 3:18also are the one responsible for all of your own merchandise and whatnot as well.
- 3:21And that includes branded water bottles all the way to making your own T shirts.
- 3:26Definitely.
- 3:27Definitely.
- 3:27Well, it just became so expensive for us.
- 3:30You know?
- 3:30As a band, you're you well, you sell merch, and that's how you make your money.
- 3:33Well, it's hard to make money selling $25 T shirts that nobody wants to pay for, but you're
- 3:39paying, you know, $15.16 dollars for this T shirt.
- 3:41Right.
- 3:42So we had to find a way to cut those costs.
- 3:45We started using direct to film transfers, our own heat presses, and making our own stuff.
- 3:50Now we make shirts at home for less than $4.
- 3:52So that's one facet.
- 3:54The branded water bottles was just a really great idea courtesy of our partners over at
- 3:59Team Pluto.
- 4:00We have a great partner in the Sioux Falls area, Dakota Splash, who they print custom
- 4:05labels for water bottles.
- 4:06We took that idea and said, well, yeah, our name looks good on there, but how nice would
- 4:13Big Dog Productions name look on there?
- 4:15And would Big Dog be interested in paying for that?
- 4:18And not you specifically, but other places definitely would be.
- 4:22Right?
- 4:22And, it's it's something that grew very organically of just finding the best way to
- 4:30connect with people.
- 4:32Right?
- 4:32People that you don't know from Adam, what's the most deliverable thing that we can find and
- 4:38a cold bottle of water on a hot day, it doesn't get any better.
- 4:43Well, I I feel like that falls under the category of guerrilla marketing, which quite
- 4:47frankly is my favorite type of marketing.
- 4:50Type I do.
- 4:50Yeah.
- 4:51The unique and interesting ways to get yourself out there, to get get other people out there
- 4:56and heard.
- 4:57And that was you had that big sale going on for during the rally, but you have something going
- 5:01year round now.
- 5:02I I said, yeah.
- 5:03We're working.
- 5:03So deliverability is the big thing with us.
- 5:06We wanna be in the places where music is happening.
- 5:08So the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls and our other smaller venues, the den in
- 5:13Sioux Falls, the Custer Beacon out here in Custer, South Dakota.
- 5:17These places we hope are places where we'll have this water bottle deal and this name
- 5:22generation, this this, you know, this engine kinda driving year round in the music venues.
- 5:28And then obviously, Sturgis Rally, large outdoor music festivals all summer long.
- 5:33That's really where we'll make the biggest noise, but yeah, definitely wanted wanted to be
- 5:38something that is pervasive year round.
- 5:41Right.
- 5:42And that's a lot of work for just one person.
- 5:43I know it's you and your wife.
- 5:45You guys are kind of like the team behind it.
- 5:47Yeah?
- 5:47Totally.
- 5:48Totally a team, but the team's much bigger.
- 5:50The team now includes you, Jenica, and your husband, Eric, and your daughter, Shay, and a
- 5:55lot of other people that are behind the scenes.
- 5:58Kind of doing their own thing, but what they're doing is serving the greater good.
- 6:03That's kind of where we're at now is we're looking for more people that want to serve that
- 6:07greater good.
- 6:07Come be involved with us.
- 6:09Come join in.
- 6:10Invest your time.
- 6:11If you have money, we have funds that could be used to empower other creators.
- 6:17And that's really what the scene is about.
- 6:19That's what I think both of us, personally, that's what we're really about in this.
- 6:24And it is the essence of the scene projects.
- 6:27Empowering creators and letting them loose on the world.
- 6:31I actually think that's why it works so well is because it seems like we have very similar
- 6:35goals as far as creating and building a network where people can feel comfortable to express
- 6:41themselves and to share what they've got and to be seen and be heard and to make it places.
- 6:48Yeah.
- 6:48Well, and we kinda wanna make our places the places to be.
- 6:52Yeah.
- 6:52Right?
- 6:53The places where we're working, we want to just I mean, they're gonna be cooler because we're
- 6:57hanging out there.
- 6:58Because we're bringing our people and our energy to these places, they're going to be
- 7:02more popular.
- 7:03They're going to have more gravity to them.
- 7:05So let's just keep accentuating that.
- 7:08Let's go out and find the really cool places that we wanna work right now, and let's not
- 7:12wait for that moment.
- 7:13Let's go find these places, and let's start working on it.
- 7:15You know?
- 7:15Right.
- 7:16I've I've got a twenty year career left in me, I think, at least.
- 7:19Right?
- 7:20I'm 38 years old.
- 7:21I can do this for a long time.
- 7:23Minimum of twenty years.
- 7:24Exactly.
- 7:25Let's get to building now.
- 7:27So we really have something that sustains us.
- 7:29You know, we're looking at you know, you're looking at, you know, kids that are leaving the
- 7:33home and growing up, and you're sending them out.
- 7:36I have small kids still in grade school.
- 7:39I want this to be something that's there when my grade school age children are having
- 7:43children and those children are growing up, that they know what this is.
- 7:47That we are an authority on music in the Midwest, that we are your go to as an artist
- 7:53for promotion and pub publicity.
- 7:55And for listeners, we are the place that you go to meet your next favorite artist.
- 8:01It's it's really that simple.
- 8:04I think that's a beautiful sum up.
- 8:06And then, of course and it all starts with the scene.
- 8:08Right?
- 8:08Which, of course, you've been recently rebranded to the scene projects?
- 8:12Yes.
- 8:12Yes.
- 8:13And it kinda has that double entendre.
- 8:14Right?
- 8:15The scene projects or the scene projects.
- 8:16Yeah.
- 8:17No.
- 8:17That that's clever.
- 8:19It's and and I have a new friend, and, you know, my friend Jennifer Burns, who we've
- 8:24started raking, another member of the team.
- 8:26Right?
- 8:26She works for Local IQ.
- 8:28That is they own the Argus leader.
- 8:30That's our local Sioux Falls paper.
- 8:32But they are all about the digital landscape.
- 8:34Right?
- 8:34They know what they are.
- 8:36They're digital advertisers.
- 8:37So we had some really great talks about how we can start to use their services to really
- 8:43target to the people that we want to bring in at this point.
- 8:49Right?
- 8:49Yes, we want listeners, but right now we need more team members.
- 8:53Right?
- 8:53Yes.
- 8:53We need more of you to come in and to work with us to grow this thing we need more content
- 8:58creators we need.
- 9:00You know investors that want to help us grow this idea obviously funding is an issue we're
- 9:04both investing our life savings into building something that that is not against not even
- 9:09savings were were advancing you know, taking out advances on our lives to build this thing,
- 9:14but it's because the belief in it is so deep.
- 9:17You feel it.
- 9:18And and while we were talking and interviewing you earlier for for the show, you know, a
- 9:23beautiful double rainbow right out the window, and we've talked about timing a lot today.
- 9:27And
- 9:28Divine providence.
- 9:29I don't know much better timing and signs of your timing than that.
- 9:33Right.
- 9:34Oh, yeah.
- 9:35No.
- 9:35I would agree.
- 9:35I think it's all working out just beautifully.
- 9:38And not just for the overall picture, but also for your music too.
- 9:41It's really cool being able to see you get out and around and performing all these places.
- 9:45And so the scene the scene gives you a way to really connect with a lot of other people, but
- 9:49your music gives you a way to connect with people too.
- 9:51Right.
- 9:52And it did.
- 9:53And I thank you for that.
- 9:54And you have both been there.
- 9:55And Shay behind the camera was a huge part of our summer in capturing some of these moments,
- 10:00right?
- 10:00I'm just flipping through my phone and I'm like, man, you had a really cool three months.
- 10:05And then you keep going and you're like, oh, wow, you've had a really good year.
- 10:08Oh, wow, you've had a really good two years.
- 10:10And yeah, we just want to keep that, right?
- 10:12We want to be able to scroll through that phone and never see low lights, right?
- 10:16That it's nothing but these beautiful people that we're forming relationships with and all
- 10:21the good times that we're having together.
- 10:22And I love the idea of a mixer, an artist mixer is something we've kicked around More
- 10:29community, more community within the artist community.
- 10:32And by, you know, not just kind of like, oh, hey, or maybe catching a show, but actually
- 10:37getting together, actually making a difference and seeing what comes of that.
- 10:41We've had for years a Facebook group called the Black Hills Musician Association.
- 10:46We've never made that like an official, you know, brick and mortar kind of establishment,
- 10:52but maybe we should, right?
- 10:53Like, maybe it is time to take that and give it a little bit more concrete name and something.
- 11:00Right.
- 11:00And we talked earlier about being an authority on music and kind of accepting our roles as
- 11:08such.
- 11:08Right?
- 11:09We both have people that call us weekly for advice probably.
- 11:13Right?
- 11:14So, okay, we're gonna start putting out all of our advice on this podcast.
- 11:18And now you need to start joining in as a listener, as a guest, as an everything, and
- 11:22start bringing your energy to this thing so we can do what you really want us to do.
- 11:26And I think that's the biggest thing is that, like, secretly, everyone is at home wanting us
- 11:33to do this, that are like, oh my god.
- 11:35Someone needs to do this awesome podcast so that we can be a part of it.
- 11:37Right?
- 11:38Right.
- 11:38It's just that we finally got around to doing it.
- 11:41Right.
- 11:41Instead of waiting for someone else to create the opportunity, creating the opportunities for
- 11:45ourselves and for others.
- 11:46And that's yeah.
- 11:47That that's a big reason why we put together Dirty Dog productions and why it's so wonderful
- 11:51to see what you're doing with DBS entertainment and the scene.
- 11:54And reminder to anyone listening that you can find it at the scene projects across the web.
- 11:59You wanna look it up.
- 12:00The scene projects or the scene projects.
- 12:02It's spelled the same.
- 12:04No.
- 12:04And we love it.
- 12:05And make sure that you're checking out dirtydog.com.
- 12:08A lot of the, the more video and the more kind of blog and reading style stuff is gonna be
- 12:14featured over on your stuff.
- 12:15And I think eventually our our websites are going to probably look very similar where we'll
- 12:19both have similar homes, but you're going be able to find this information everywhere.
- 12:22And that's kind of what we hope is that It's cool.
- 12:24Is that everyone does that.
- 12:26That that everyone has a a a tag and a link and and, you know, of our rundown of the week or
- 12:32whatever on all of their websites.
- 12:34And we're all growing this much larger community.
- 12:37Yeah.
- 12:38To make the information accessible.
- 12:40It doesn't need to come from just one spot.
- 12:43Exactly.
- 12:43We want it to be everywhere.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:45Pervasive is a term I use a lot.
- 12:47We want to be pervasive.
- 12:49We wanna be everywhere and seeping into every single thing.
- 12:52That's why the water works great as a marketing tool for us because elementally, the water is
- 12:58exactly what we want to be.
- 12:59We wanna be everywhere.
- 13:00We wanna be able to seep into every single crack and and win our way in there.
- 13:05And have that fluidity to fill whatever role necessary.
- 13:08Exactly.
- 13:09It's got a lot of meaning to us, doesn't it?
- 13:12God, this is fun, hasn't it?
- 13:13Just having I love it.
- 13:16I I love getting behind the microphone and just kinda letting it rip like this and and having
- 13:21the conversations is what has made all of this possible.
- 13:26Right?
- 13:26This is growing out of us just talking about it.
- 13:29We're literally pulling our lives out of thin air, and I I just couldn't be more tickled to
- 13:34get to do it with such a cool team and to have a team.
- 13:37Right?
- 13:37I we talk about it a lot that we've toiled, and you have your husband, and you guys are a team
- 13:41together.
- 13:42But and and I have my wife, Danielle, and and we're talking.
- 13:45And you feel like you're toiling in obscurity, and nobody sees you.
- 13:50And I feel like when we met this year that we both were like, I see you.
- 13:54Yes.
- 13:55I see what you're doing.
- 13:56And, oh my god, I've been doing all that same stuff, and I would really love to help you.
- 14:01I think that relationship and our want to just help each other is already seeping out.
- 14:07Right?
- 14:07That's already spreading to everyone.
- 14:09And, yeah, I I think the mission that we have because it's so clear, it's making it easy to
- 14:17achieve.
- 14:18Right.
- 14:18A good collaboration of the brain juices.
- 14:20Yeah.
- 14:21Well, you need that.
- 14:22Yes.
- 14:22Absolutely.
- 14:23You need it.
- 14:24Because otherwise, you're just in there talking to yourself all the time.
- 14:27And I think we both do that enough.
- 14:29Maybe.
- 14:30More more than I'd probably like to admit.
- 14:33Well, so if anyone else wants to collaborate with their brain juices as well, where would
- 14:39you like them to find you at specifically?
- 14:42Good.
- 14:43Well, go to listen.t0/thesceneprojects.
- 14:48You'll be able to find us on Spotify and YouTube, everything.
- 14:51That's kind of our link tree.
- 14:52You'll also be able to find the Patreon page, which is where we're kind of gathering our
- 14:56founders.
- 14:57We're gathering these people that are It's a free sign up, but when you give us our email,
- 15:02we don't take it lightly.

- 15:40Then we're gonna be broadcasting all of these things on the podcast.
- 15:44Make sure that you're coming out if you're in the Sioux Falls area or or close.
- 15:48August 30, DBS entertainment and the scene projects are having our ribbon cutting ceremony
- 15:54as official members of the Sioux Falls, the greater Sioux Falls area chamber of commerce,
- 15:58which is a big step for us.
- 15:59Know, it's kind of coming out from the underground.
- 16:02And it's saying, no, this is who we are.
- 16:05And we think that we're just as viable a business as any grocery store or gas station or
- 16:13dispensary or or any other business that's out there.
- 16:17And and we're here to serve our community and to be a part of that community and and I hope
- 16:22that people through more of our outreach stuff realize that about us, that we're really about
- 16:29our community and foremost.
- 16:31And just we're ready to get to work.
- 16:34We're ready to just do every single day to just do stuff, to stop talking about it and to just
- 16:39get out there and do it.
- 16:40Absolutely.
- 16:41Well, I have no doubt that we're gonna be talking so much more, and everyone's gonna be
- 16:46very happy with the the cool things that we've got coming.
- 16:49And then in the next few months, the next year, it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 16:52So
- 16:53It's gonna be the best.
- 16:54Excited to give everyone a teaser since there's no specifics.
- 16:57Not really.
- 16:57No.
