- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:04Speaker 2: All right, well it's Terminello's take and Lou mister radio
- 0:09Speaker 2: guy over here. We can't not start this segment without
- 0:12Speaker 2: talking about the explosive news this past week that WCBS
- 0:17Speaker 2: eight eighty is no longer as a radio guy and
- 0:21Speaker 2: someone who's worked in radio and as radio colleagues, it's
- 0:25Speaker 2: sort of a sad day. And my other question is, is
- 0:29Speaker 2: honestly realizing they're pitting Yes, Pitning and WFN against each
- 0:33Speaker 2: other in their network. It's very strange to me how
- 0:36Speaker 2: that all went down.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Alex's always good to be with you. When I heard
- 0:42Speaker 1: that news on Monday, and actually I heard it from
- 0:46Speaker 1: you Monday morning, I was I was shocked. Not too
- 0:52Speaker 1: many things shocked me, but that was a bombshell. And yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I mean they're gonna go off two days before, which
- 1:00Speaker 1: would have been the fifty seventh anniversary of WCBS. Yes,
- 1:04Speaker 1: there's two all news stations in New York City. Odyssey
- 1:10Speaker 1: controls both of them. I've always been a news Radio
- 1:14Speaker 1: eighty eight listener for my news and for my traffic
- 1:19Speaker 1: and for my weather besides AM nine seventy obviously where
- 1:25Speaker 1: I worked, but I am shocked that this has happened.
- 1:29Speaker 1: It just goes to show you the incredible changes in
- 1:33Speaker 1: the radio industry. That Odissey and ESPN, which are mortal enemies,
- 1:39Speaker 1: at least locally here in New York, Odissey sports stations
- 1:46Speaker 1: couldn't have ESPN personalities on the are as guests. It
- 1:51Speaker 1: became a big deal. So that that surprises me. That
- 1:57Speaker 1: the signal they'll be moving to signal to an eighty
- 2:01Speaker 1: and they're gonna change the call letters on August twenty sixth,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and an iconic, a truly iconic radio station which was
- 2:09Speaker 1: six in revenue AD revenue last year is no more.
- 2:13Speaker 1: And obviously a lot of people are gonna lose their
- 2:15Speaker 1: jobs who have been there for a long long time.
- 2:18Speaker 1: They did not see this coming. But obviously for Odyssey
- 2:23Speaker 1: they're cutting down on expenses and it's going to be
- 2:28Speaker 1: better in the ledger, the financial ledger for them. I
- 2:32Speaker 1: don't know what's gonna happen with the with these sports teams.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I still don't think it's it's done. Because the Mets
- 2:39Speaker 1: are gonna stay on News Radio eighty eight and Artist
- 2:41Speaker 1: he's gonna run them. The Nixon Rangers are are coming
- 2:48Speaker 1: to eight eighty because and H Rutgers basketball is already
- 2:54Speaker 1: on eight eighty. What's gonna happen to them? Odissey controls them.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Are they gonna are they going to stay on it?
- 3:00Speaker 1: What are they going to do? Or they're moving to fan?
- 3:03Speaker 1: I don't know what's gonna happen. I wanted to be
- 3:05Speaker 1: surprised if one of the MSG teams, the Knicks or
- 3:08Speaker 1: the Rangers moved to the fan because remember the fan
- 3:11Speaker 1: sometimes with conflicts splits the frequency. Say if there's a
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yankee and a Nets, a Brooklyn Nets conflict, they'll put
- 3:23Speaker 1: one on the FM dial, one on the AM dial.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Same thing with the Yankees and Giants, or Giants and
- 3:30Speaker 1: Brooklyn Nets, so they can move, say the Knicks over
- 3:36Speaker 1: if they have a deal with esp and I know
- 3:38Speaker 1: ESPN wants to do that. I have no idea it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I just don't believe that all the details have come
- 3:44Speaker 1: out yet. But that was a shocker to me. And
- 3:48Speaker 1: I can't find out what's gonna happen to the ten
- 3:51Speaker 1: fifty signal? Are they just going to shut it down
- 3:55Speaker 1: next week? Ten fifty has carried a lot of sports.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I'm using the Jets have anything to do with this,
- 4:02Speaker 2: I feel like now that they're not the stable home
- 4:05Speaker 2: of the Jets. I mean, I know it's maybe a
- 4:07Speaker 2: loaded question, but was there any kind of thing about
- 4:11Speaker 2: this because we all knew that they were losing the
- 4:13Speaker 2: FM signal and now they're leasing the eighty I don't
- 4:17Speaker 2: know if losing the Jets anything to do with that
- 4:18Speaker 2: or not.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But I would say no, I would say I would
- 4:22Speaker 1: say this is purely a chance for them. Obviously they
- 4:27Speaker 1: don't want to pay the twelve point five million dollars,
- 4:29Speaker 1: which apparently was the yearly leasing price for ninety eight
- 4:34Speaker 1: point seven, which is a tremendous signal. And I don't
- 4:38Speaker 1: know what the future is there. I read some place
- 4:40Speaker 1: where it's going to be Christian music for a while
- 4:42Speaker 1: until they figure it out. I don't know, but if
- 4:46Speaker 1: somebody doesn't pick up that signal, that's an opportunity wasted
- 4:51Speaker 1: because that's a powerful signal. And I guess news Radio
- 4:55Speaker 1: eighty eight is a little bit stronger than ten fifty.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I know ten I believe is northeast directional, and news
- 5:03Speaker 1: Radio eighty eight is more. And it's not clear channel
- 5:07Speaker 1: like wfa N or WOA or WABC, But I think
- 5:12Speaker 1: it's a little bit more centralized type of a signal reach.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So Alex, yes, this this surprised me very much.
- 5:23Speaker 2: So all right, well, staying in the media realm the
- 5:27Speaker 2: day after that legendary announcer who just celebrated his birthday.
- 5:31Speaker 2: By the way, Sam Rosen is saying that this year
- 5:35Speaker 2: is the final year he's going to broadcast Rangers hockey.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And you know it's calling all related because people would
- 5:41Speaker 2: listen to him on ESPN during the postseason this past year.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Of course, he has the hall really the Hall of
- 5:47Speaker 2: Fame call of them winning the Cup in ninety four.
- 5:51Speaker 2: And he's just an upstanding guy. I mean, we've seen
- 5:55Speaker 2: Sterling go, now we're seeing Sam Roseen go. What's your
- 5:58Speaker 2: takeaway of Sam Rosen.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Well, obviously he's a great hockey announcer, and he's a
- 6:04Speaker 1: Hall of Fame hockey announcer. He's in the Hall of Fame,
- 6:07Speaker 1: in the Pro Hockey Hall of Fame. He's the voice
- 6:11Speaker 1: of the Rangers. He's truly the voice of the Rangers.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You think of Ranger hockey when it comes to media,
- 6:17Speaker 1: you think of of Sam rose And yes, I know,
- 6:20Speaker 1: Kenny Albert is the radio announcer and I assume he's
- 6:23Speaker 1: the heir apparent to move over full time to the
- 6:27Speaker 1: TV side. I would be shocked if it's not Kenny Albert.
- 6:30Speaker 1: The only way would not be Kenny Albert would be
- 6:33Speaker 1: if his national TV commitments are just too much of
- 6:40Speaker 1: a conflict with Ranger local television. But he's one of
- 6:45Speaker 1: the great. Sam Rose is one of the great local
- 6:48Speaker 1: broadcasters of all time. And but I don't mean just
- 6:51Speaker 1: local in New York, but I mean announces that didn't
- 6:55Speaker 1: have a national footprint, that do that do a local
- 6:59Speaker 1: teams like Pat Foley was for the black Hawks in Chicago.
- 7:03Speaker 1: People like that, you know. So he's great. I'm surprised
- 7:10Speaker 1: that he's retiring because he always indicated that he was
- 7:14Speaker 1: gonna go a little longer. But he said he'll know
- 7:17Speaker 1: when it's time to go, and he's been you know,
- 7:19Speaker 1: he's seventy seven years old. He's gonna do one more year.
- 7:23Speaker 1: The Rangers are gonna be good again. They'll be a
- 7:25Speaker 1: contender for the Cup. And for any Ranger fan and
- 7:30Speaker 1: Sam rosan, it would be great if the Rangers could
- 7:33Speaker 1: win the Cup for him in his last year. But
- 7:35Speaker 1: he is one of the all time great hockey announcers,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and we've been lucky in New York. We've had for
- 7:41Speaker 1: all the teams, the three local teams in the market,
- 7:45Speaker 1: We've had some great announcers. I mean, from Mike Emrick
- 7:48Speaker 1: to Jigs McDonald to Gary Thorne. You know, we can
- 7:52Speaker 1: go right down the line. We've had some great announcers.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And Brendan Burke is you know, an Islander great already
- 8:00Speaker 1: and he's only been doing TV for for eight years.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Matty Lochlin, you know, we've had all these how He Rose,
- 8:08Speaker 1: Howie Rose, Chris King, we have all these iconic play
- 8:13Speaker 1: by play people for the teams that dominate this area
- 8:19Speaker 1: when it comes to hockey. So I'll be looking forward
- 8:22Speaker 1: to listen to Sam Rose in this year. He's one
- 8:25Speaker 1: of the all time greats. I mean he's and he's
- 8:28Speaker 1: well liked, and he calls a great play by play,
- 8:32Speaker 1: gives you the word picture. He's not overbearing's a perfect announcer,
- 8:37Speaker 1: and he deserves all the accolades he's going to get
- 8:40Speaker 1: in his last year.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Without question, they say big shoes to Phil, and that
- 8:45Speaker 2: certainly is And I got to ask you this as
- 8:49Speaker 2: the new generation looks at this and says, okay, now's
- 8:51Speaker 2: our time. I guess the hope is that a lot
- 8:56Speaker 2: of people have learned from the way he called these games,
- 8:59Speaker 2: same with Sterling, and maybe even you know, just not
- 9:03Speaker 2: continued with their own style, of course. But my point is,
- 9:07Speaker 2: if you're a new broadcast, we're looking at this, you
- 9:10Speaker 2: gotta have some excitement, right.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Yes, I mean obviously you have to have to have
- 9:15Speaker 1: some excitement, just like the battle for John Sterling's job.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And the Yankees have gone through through a bunch of
- 9:22Speaker 1: announcers this year, and I don't know if the Yankees
- 9:24Speaker 1: are going to do just one play by play guy
- 9:28Speaker 1: or they're gonna go with two play by play guys
- 9:31Speaker 1: and Susan you know, and break up the game that way,
- 9:35Speaker 1: but that'll be interesting. Sterling and Sam Rose and they
- 9:39Speaker 1: are two different type of announcers. Rosen was much more
- 9:44Speaker 1: and it's part of due to the nature of the
- 9:46Speaker 1: sport is more dead time in baseball, so Sterling was
- 9:51Speaker 1: more conversation. A lot of people didn't like sterling style,
- 9:55Speaker 1: A lot of people did, but he was there every night,
- 9:59Speaker 1: you know, he'd had that incredible stretch of consecutive games,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and Rosen was more of a straight play by play guy,
- 10:07Speaker 1: because it's really not that much time to interject different
- 10:13Speaker 1: opinions and stories during the play by play of a
- 10:16Speaker 1: hockey game. I like I said, I assume they're gonna
- 10:20Speaker 1: just slip Kenny Albert in there. I don't think they're
- 10:22Speaker 1: gonna pull somebody out of uh you know, out of
- 10:26Speaker 1: a broadcasting school and put him in there. Now, maybe
- 10:29Speaker 1: for radio they will. I know, Don legreca Is, it's
- 10:34Speaker 1: Kenny Albert's backup and he does a fine job. But
- 10:37Speaker 1: again he's also on the Michael K Show, one of
- 10:41Speaker 1: the co hosts. I don't know what's gonna happen to the
- 10:44Speaker 1: radio side, but I assume uh Logrector will get a
- 10:49Speaker 1: serious look.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he was great with the calls during that series. Though.
- 10:54Speaker 2: On the ESPN those playoffs series, he was great, very excited,
- 11:00Speaker 2: and you know all about that. The next day he
- 11:02Speaker 2: got to talk about on the radio on the Michael
- 11:04Speaker 2: K Show. I liked that one two combination for him.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So hopefully he gets he gets a look at as
- 11:10Speaker 2: far as the radio, you know, almost every day, should
- 11:13Speaker 2: Kenny make the swap switch over to TV? Saying along
- 11:17Speaker 2: that though, you know, Kenny bruce Beck a lot of
- 11:21Speaker 2: our locals were over even Noah Eagle was over in
- 11:25Speaker 2: Paris for the twenty twenty four Olympics. I got to
- 11:28Speaker 2: say you, Lou, great job by all. I love that
- 11:31Speaker 2: Bruce Beck worked his tail off every night to give
- 11:34Speaker 2: us reports from Paris. Kenny Albert on the call for
- 11:38Speaker 2: various events. No Eagle, I believe, was doing basketball. I
- 11:41Speaker 2: mean we had some local guys representing well out there.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Well obviously, Kenny did a great job doing more to Polo.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And you mentioned the hard work of Bruce bec Nobody
- 11:52Speaker 1: in his career and he's and he's never slacked off.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Nobody works harder at his job than Bruce Beck. H
- 12:01Speaker 1: he is, he's a he's a New York media icon,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and he's a he's a wonderful he's a wonderful person.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I want to give a shout out to Noah Eagle,
- 12:09Speaker 1: who's obviously a lot of people still are just learning
- 12:14Speaker 1: about his abilities. I watched a lot of the basketball,
- 12:19Speaker 1: the men's and women's. He did both. He was a superstar.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I mean, he is a kid twenty six, twenty seven
- 12:25Speaker 1: years old, not allow of the experience on a national stage.
- 12:29Speaker 1: He's got when his father decides not to do the
- 12:32Speaker 1: next anymore. He's going to be the full time NETS
- 12:34Speaker 1: play by play announcer on TV. He's spectacular. He doesn't
- 12:40Speaker 1: he's not overbearing. He knows how to at at that
- 12:45Speaker 1: high point of the game, how to raise how to
- 12:47Speaker 1: raise his level. He was tremendous. I mean, he could
- 12:50Speaker 1: do NBA Finals right now. That's how good he is.
- 12:56Speaker 2: As far as the games go. I mean, we also
- 12:58Speaker 2: Steph Curry go off for four threes, I believe in
- 13:01Speaker 2: to end that game against France.
- 13:05Speaker 1: What did you think?
- 13:05Speaker 2: I mean, we talked about it after they won against Serbia.
- 13:10Speaker 2: We didn't. We didn't talk yet until now. What a
- 13:13Speaker 2: well deserved gold medal for Team USA. And say what
- 13:16Speaker 2: the women's side.
- 13:17Speaker 1: As well well, The men's Olympic basketball team did a
- 13:24Speaker 1: great job. And as we said last week, this is
- 13:26Speaker 1: a deep team. This is probably this could might be
- 13:30Speaker 1: the second best team after the ninety two team in Barcelona,
- 13:36Speaker 1: the first NBA team to go there. But the world
- 13:40Speaker 1: is catching up, Alex The world is catching up. The
- 13:43Speaker 1: differences the NBA, the NBA Olympic team, they had Durant,
- 13:50Speaker 1: they had Curry, and they had Lebron James. When the
- 13:53Speaker 1: going got tough. They needed their all time superstars, and
- 13:58Speaker 1: those guys came through. And those are all all time superstars. Again,
- 14:02Speaker 1: there was other there's other stars on the team, but
- 14:05Speaker 1: they needed those guys. If Curry wasn't wasn't hitting those
- 14:10Speaker 1: four threes at the end of the game, if he
- 14:11Speaker 1: was a little bit off, they might lose that game.
- 14:14Speaker 1: The same thing in the Serbia game. Durant hit all
- 14:18Speaker 1: of his field goals, all in clutch situations in the
- 14:21Speaker 1: fourth quarter. The great Lebron James had a triple double
- 14:24Speaker 1: against Serbia. The world is shrinking. They're catching up, and
- 14:29Speaker 1: not only in basketball, but but in other sports where
- 14:33Speaker 1: the United States dominated. But the United States obviously winning
- 14:39Speaker 1: their fifth straight gold medal, kudos to them. The women
- 14:42Speaker 1: were challenged on on Sunday, but they won sixty one
- 14:48Speaker 1: games in a row, and that's a level of excellence
- 14:52Speaker 1: that you know can't be can't be matched. A couple
- 14:57Speaker 1: of other things. On the Saturday afternoon, a warm Saturday
- 15:01Speaker 1: afternoon in July, with a three point thirty start, the
- 15:07Speaker 1: men's Olympic gold medal game against France had a rating
- 15:12Speaker 1: of twenty point three million people watching, which is more
- 15:17Speaker 1: by about nine million of an NBA final game, which
- 15:21Speaker 1: is around anywhere between nine to twelve million. It actually
- 15:25Speaker 1: peaked at twenty three million. The women's game on Sunday
- 15:29Speaker 1: got a seven point three. The women's gold medal soccer game,
- 15:33Speaker 1: would the women beat Brazil? Won Nothing that got that
- 15:37Speaker 1: nine million people watching that. So the Olympic basketball and
- 15:45Speaker 1: the fact that now that they're being challenged makes it
- 15:48Speaker 1: more interesting. It's no longer the walkover. And if they
- 15:53Speaker 1: have these superstars, they probably would not have won the game.
- 15:57Speaker 1: But kudos then, kudos to NBC. They had great production
- 16:04Speaker 1: for the two weeks. Mike Tarico on the all time
- 16:07Speaker 1: great announcers already, he can do anything. He could do football,
- 16:11Speaker 1: he could do he could do basketball, He's even done
- 16:14Speaker 1: some hockey. He can host, he's he could do golf.
- 16:18Speaker 1: He's one of the all time best announcers already. Did
- 16:23Speaker 1: a great job. NBC did a great job. It's a
- 16:26Speaker 1: great jumping point for them for twenty twenty eight in
- 16:29Speaker 1: Los Angeles. I really have really had no complaints with
- 16:34Speaker 1: the with the with the broadcast at all. They were great.
- 16:39Speaker 1: And we are now living in an age where if
- 16:42Speaker 1: you want to see table tennis, you could see table tennis,
- 16:46Speaker 1: you know.
- 16:47Speaker 2: So I think I think about Los Angeles and my
- 16:50Speaker 2: grandmother had a nineteen seventy six Olympics smug in her
- 16:55Speaker 2: kitchen and we used to have coffee out of that.
- 16:57Speaker 2: So that's kind of my memory of ninety seventy six Olympics.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I'm sure you have a more vivid member though, because you've.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Probably well I remember that. I remember the nineteen seventy
- 17:06Speaker 1: sixth Olympics in Montreal pretty well.
- 17:11Speaker 2: You know.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Obviously, Bruce Jenner winning the gold medal was he was
- 17:18Speaker 1: the guy in seventy six. Olympic boxing was still very
- 17:23Speaker 1: prominent in seventy six, so, you know, just just a
- 17:28Speaker 1: different time unit.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I guess they held it in nineteen eighty four, is
- 17:32Speaker 2: that right? In LA?
- 17:34Speaker 1: Eighty four? In La? This is gonna be the third
- 17:36Speaker 1: time in LA twenty twenty twenty four. I think it's
- 17:42Speaker 1: twenty four, eighty four and twenty twenty four or twenty
- 17:46Speaker 1: four to twenty eight. I think it was twenty four.
- 17:49Speaker 1: But this is gonna be the third time that it's
- 17:51Speaker 1: going to be held in Los Angeles. And good thing
- 17:54Speaker 1: is they're going to add baseball, bring baseball back, which
- 17:58Speaker 1: I think is a good Olympics what they're gonna bring
- 18:00Speaker 1: lacrosse back as an Olympic sport. And from what I hear,
- 18:05Speaker 1: I hear that uh break Dan saying is going to
- 18:08Speaker 1: be one and one thankfully, so that I hear that's.
- 18:15Speaker 2: A substitute any contact sport with that was kind of
- 18:19Speaker 2: bizarre to me. But you know what, IOC tried. It
- 18:22Speaker 2: didn't work. Actually, I guess the dancing was so bad
- 18:25Speaker 2: as well. It just was like why I even do it?
- 18:27Speaker 1: It's it was.
- 18:28Speaker 2: A mess, I'll put it that way. As being a
- 18:31Speaker 2: baseball let's go there firstly with the Athletics in town
- 18:35Speaker 2: for the final time as Oakland, I have to say
- 18:39Speaker 2: the biggest connection I could think of between the Yankees,
- 18:42Speaker 2: Mets and A's to have worn that uniform is Ricky Henderson.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Very good, yes, uh huh. Obviously Ricky Henderson a Hall
- 18:53Speaker 1: of Famer. Obviously he was a great athletic, he was
- 18:56Speaker 1: a great Yankee, and he was a contributing Met at
- 18:59Speaker 1: the end of his career. Bad bad three I think
- 19:01Speaker 1: he's three sixteen in nineteen ninety nine when they went
- 19:05Speaker 1: to the NLCS. I mean there was he could do anything,
- 19:09Speaker 1: And besides, obviously he's known for a stolen bases, but
- 19:14Speaker 1: he can hit for power. He was a great hitter
- 19:17Speaker 1: besides being a great base runner. Yeah, so that is
- 19:22Speaker 1: a good connection between Oakland, Yankees and Mets. And Oakland's
- 19:26Speaker 1: playing very well. They had the best record in the
- 19:28Speaker 1: America I.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Was wondering, I was wondering, Lou, if there was a
- 19:33Speaker 2: chance that by tomorrow the Mets would have lost the
- 19:36Speaker 2: series of the A's, because actually, this is the week
- 19:39Speaker 2: where pushovers aren't pushing over. The Nationals won yesterday against
- 19:43Speaker 2: the Oreos White Sox. We don't know what they did
- 19:45Speaker 2: to the Yankees the other night, twelve to two. Then
- 19:48Speaker 2: the A's last night, even the Tigers being up on
- 19:51Speaker 2: the Mariners like they did. It's not a pushover week.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Lou, Oh, absolutely not. I mean. And in the A's case,
- 20:00Speaker 1: they had the best record in the American League in July,
- 20:03Speaker 1: and in the last twenty eight games they're nineteen and nine,
- 20:07Speaker 1: and the Mets obviously obviously can lose one of these
- 20:10Speaker 1: next two games. There's no question the Mets aren't hitting.
- 20:14Speaker 1: They haven't hit in the twenty four games since the
- 20:17Speaker 1: All Star break. They just haven't hit and Nimo is
- 20:22Speaker 1: eleven for seventy eight. He's striking out a lot. That's
- 20:26Speaker 1: a big, big problem. The only one who's still hitting,
- 20:29Speaker 1: but he's not hitting for power like he did Befoty
- 20:32Speaker 1: All Star Break. I don't think he's hit a home
- 20:33Speaker 1: run in eighty eight bats. Is lindoor right now? The Mets.
- 20:39Speaker 1: The Mets are not hitting. And no matter who you're playing,
- 20:46Speaker 1: if you're not hitting or pitching well, whatever the whatever
- 20:49Speaker 1: the situation is on that particular team while they're slumping,
- 20:52Speaker 1: it doesn't matter if you're playing in Chicago White Sox
- 20:55Speaker 1: or if you're playing the Philadelphia Phillies. When when you're
- 21:00Speaker 1: not performing well, it doesn't matter who the opposition is,
- 21:02Speaker 1: you're going to get beat by the Chicago White Sox
- 21:06Speaker 1: or the Miami Marlins, like the Phillies were shut out
- 21:09Speaker 1: last night by the Marlins. The Phillies are you know,
- 21:12Speaker 1: the Phillies are seven and seventeen and they last twenty
- 21:15Speaker 1: four games. Who would have figured that their bullpen has imploded.
- 21:20Speaker 1: So they're lucky that they had such a huge lead,
- 21:23Speaker 1: and they're lucky that the Mets and Braids have been
- 21:26Speaker 1: mediocre the last month but if the Mets were still
- 21:29Speaker 1: playing at the same pace they were before the All
- 21:34Speaker 1: Star breaks, say say if they weren't twelve and twelve,
- 21:37Speaker 1: say if they were you know, they were fifteen and
- 21:42Speaker 1: fifteen and nine, the Mets will only be five games
- 21:45Speaker 1: out of first place, they after being sixteen and a
- 21:47Speaker 1: half games at the first place. So the Phillies have
- 21:50Speaker 1: to get their act together. They're not hitting and they're
- 21:52Speaker 1: not pitching well, but they still they still have a
- 21:56Speaker 1: six game lead in the division and they should get
- 21:59Speaker 1: strained out.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Well, We've saw an eight gamely dissipate a few years,
- 22:04Speaker 2: you know, like in twenty oh eight, So you never know.
- 22:07Speaker 2: These these divisions are so wild, I mean, well not
- 22:11Speaker 2: even the Twins division with the Guardians. Guardians are strong.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I think they're gonna win it. But we're in August
- 22:17Speaker 2: and everything seemed so close. But I will say the Mets,
- 22:23Speaker 2: they're on the cusp, they were in it. Do you
- 22:26Speaker 2: think your prediction of not making the playoffs will so
- 22:28Speaker 2: ring true at the end of the at.
- 22:30Speaker 1: The unfortunately, Alex, I do, And I'll tell you why
- 22:36Speaker 1: right now. The Padres why Pat said, I thought we
- 22:40Speaker 1: was gonna take his excuse me a step back in
- 22:43Speaker 1: the second half of the year. They have not. They've
- 22:47Speaker 1: They've gone eighteen and three in their last twenty one games.
- 22:51Speaker 1: They have a great bullpen, which they fortified at the
- 22:53Speaker 1: trade deadline. They're playing very, very well. They've made a
- 22:59Speaker 1: ton of comebacks in a lot of these games, so
- 23:01Speaker 1: you have to really bear down for twenty seven outs,
- 23:04Speaker 1: and they put a lot of pressure on you for
- 23:06Speaker 1: twenty seven outs. The Diamondbacks, it didn't look like the
- 23:09Speaker 1: Diamondbacks were going anywhere, and this year, well, they're nineteen
- 23:14Speaker 1: and five in their last twenty four. They both now
- 23:17Speaker 1: have a four and a half game lead on the Mets.
- 23:20Speaker 1: The Braves have a game and a half lead on
- 23:22Speaker 1: the Mets. Now, game and a half lead is nothing,
- 23:24Speaker 1: but I still think the Braves probably have a little
- 23:29Speaker 1: bit more, especially in the pitching area, and Matt Olsen,
- 23:33Speaker 1: who was having a bad year, has been starting to
- 23:35Speaker 1: produce a little bit. I mean, the Mets still have
- 23:39Speaker 1: a chance, but I think when the small clears, they're
- 23:43Speaker 1: just gonna miss. And then it's going to be interesting
- 23:46Speaker 1: to see what David Stearns does in the offseason. Steve
- 23:51Speaker 1: Cohen's been very quiet. He's been in the basement, no
- 23:55Speaker 1: media coverage, no nothing, And that kind of kind of
- 24:01Speaker 1: worries me a little bit because if he's going to
- 24:05Speaker 1: be convinced not to spend money this offseason, I'll be disappointed.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I mean, I think you have to have a combination
- 24:15Speaker 1: of development of your system and and you have to
- 24:20Speaker 1: fill in with a free agent, and not every free
- 24:22Speaker 1: agent has to be a fifty million dollar free agent.
- 24:25Speaker 1: But I will be disappointed if the Mets aren't involved
- 24:28Speaker 1: in the Wan Soto free agency unless the Yankees and
- 24:32Speaker 1: Monslo already have a deal or close to a deal
- 24:35Speaker 1: and they're going to announce it as soon as free
- 24:37Speaker 1: agency starts. I don't know that, but if it, and
- 24:40Speaker 1: I don't think they do because I know Scott Borrows
- 24:43Speaker 1: how how his strategy goes as an agent.
- 24:46Speaker 2: So I was guys thinking if it was up to him,
- 24:50Speaker 2: I mean.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's that's where he can hurt his guys.
- 24:54Speaker 1: But if the Mets aren't involved in the in the
- 24:57Speaker 1: Soto free agent play, I would be very very disappointed.
- 25:05Speaker 1: So you know, so we'll see what happens. But another
- 25:09Speaker 1: thing I want to talk about with you in baseball
- 25:11Speaker 1: is his first of all It's been a very weird
- 25:12Speaker 1: baseball year with so many teams streaking one way or
- 25:18Speaker 1: the other, positively or negatively. That has been I think
- 25:23Speaker 1: one of the earmarks of this season, teams just going
- 25:29Speaker 1: up and down. Alex. I think none of the teams
- 25:32Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball right now are great teams. I
- 25:34Speaker 1: really don't, I think, and it's going to be wide
- 25:37Speaker 1: open come playoff time. But the other thing is this
- 25:42Speaker 1: pitching injury epidemic. Yesterday, the best pitching prospect for the
- 25:48Speaker 1: Los Angeles Dodgers, River Ryan, who came up with him
- 25:52Speaker 1: was pitching for them, is going to be gone for
- 25:54Speaker 1: this year and all of next year. With Tommy John surgery.
- 25:57Speaker 1: We're not going to go down all other names of
- 25:59Speaker 1: all the pitchers have UCL injuries and have all these injuries.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But baseball has got just like they investigate injuries, concussions
- 26:08Speaker 1: and things of that nature and sports, you have to
- 26:11Speaker 1: investigate why so many pitchers are getting not only Tommy John,
- 26:17Speaker 1: but other types of injuries. Is it because the pitchers
- 26:21Speaker 1: now throw way too hard? I think that might have
- 26:24Speaker 1: something to do with it. I am not a doctor,
- 26:26Speaker 1: I am not a pitching consultant in any way. Shape
- 26:28Speaker 1: or form. You know, they try to throw out the
- 26:31Speaker 1: pitch clock. Well, the pitch clock is only in its
- 26:33Speaker 1: second year, and these pitching injuries were happening way before
- 26:37Speaker 1: the twenty twenty three season. But if you're going to
- 26:41Speaker 1: invest forty million dollars a year in a pitcher, which
- 26:44Speaker 1: I wouldn't, until they figure out what to do with
- 26:47Speaker 1: these pitching injuries, got they gotta find out. They got
- 26:53Speaker 1: to get to the bottom of why these guys are
- 26:56Speaker 1: tearing ligaments, of blowing out nerves in their arms. Yeah,
- 27:00Speaker 1: I know these guys throw on hundred one miles an hour,
- 27:04Speaker 1: but they gotta find a way They got they got.
- 27:07Speaker 1: That is a major, I think, a major, major storyline
- 27:11Speaker 1: moving forward.
- 27:13Speaker 2: It gets it gets a little worse when you think
- 27:15Speaker 2: of the fact that you know, these pitchers they pitches
- 27:20Speaker 2: a wide variety number of pitches, right, so one day
- 27:23Speaker 2: it could be five innings, the nextit seven. There's no
- 27:26Speaker 2: consistency in any start every five days, and that might
- 27:31Speaker 2: be hurting them as well. What don't you say, Oh.
- 27:33Speaker 1: I would say so. I definitely would like that scene.
- 27:37Speaker 2: That kids schemes has been no hitting teams through seven
- 27:40Speaker 2: or eight gets pulled a that demoralizes the kid. But
- 27:45Speaker 2: he's too young to be pulled out of a no hitter.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I know he's throwing ninety pitches, but the babying of
- 27:51Speaker 2: specifically him bothers me in a no end.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Lo. Well, they were talking about the kid on the
- 27:58Speaker 1: White Sox, Crochet, who was supposed to be dealt at
- 28:01Speaker 1: the deadline, and he he wasn't. And he's a very
- 28:08Speaker 1: good pitcher. He's a young guy, and he and the
- 28:10Speaker 1: White Sox probably would have gotten a lot in return
- 28:14Speaker 1: for him, and they probably will put him back on
- 28:16Speaker 1: the trademarkt come in the offseason, but they were worried
- 28:20Speaker 1: they might shut him down because he's hit ninety innings
- 28:22Speaker 1: for the year. Alex guys used to pitch three hundred
- 28:25Speaker 1: innings a year, two fifty and now you get to
- 28:30Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty five and they're shutting guys down.
- 28:36Speaker 1: This isn't This is a problem. This is an issue,
- 28:39Speaker 1: a problem, an issue. It's first of all, one of
- 28:43Speaker 1: the things that made baseball attractive is going back to
- 28:49Speaker 1: the late Mark Fidrich when he was a rookie. He
- 28:53Speaker 1: was say that again, pitching attracts fans eyeballs to TVs.
- 29:02Speaker 1: The great Fernando Alanzuela and before that, Mark Fidrich, as
- 29:07Speaker 1: I started to say for the Detroit Tigers in nineteen
- 29:09Speaker 1: seventy six. Eventually he heard his arm, but he he
- 29:14Speaker 1: was pitching. Every time he pitched. He was a national phenomena. Obviously,
- 29:20Speaker 1: Fernando Mania in nineteen eighty one when he was a rookie.
- 29:23Speaker 1: But you look forward to seeing these guys play. Dwight
- 29:27Speaker 1: Gooden in eighty four and eighty five. I mean, just
- 29:31Speaker 1: speak for myself and my friends. When he pitched, we
- 29:34Speaker 1: went and he pitched nine innings. He was not on
- 29:38Speaker 1: the pitch camp neither. It's Fernando neither, it's Fidrich. Now,
- 29:42Speaker 1: Dwight Goodin didn't hurt his arm. When he was a
- 29:46Speaker 1: young person. He had no pitch limits, he had no
- 29:49Speaker 1: innings limits. Obviously his issues were or addiction. But somebody's
- 29:56Speaker 1: got to get a hold of this pitching situation. It's
- 29:59Speaker 1: just it's a crime, you know, it really is. It
- 30:04Speaker 1: takes away from the beauty of baseball.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Spectrum of the injuries. You also have guys that are
- 30:09Speaker 2: left in there a little too long. Now I'm speaking
- 30:11Speaker 2: because I've seen Aaron Boone do it where he leaves
- 30:14Speaker 2: a guy in for another batter and the batter goes yard.
- 30:16Speaker 2: It happened over the weekend against the Rangers in Game two.
- 30:19Speaker 2: But I don't know, are you seeing that pattern where
- 30:22Speaker 2: these guys are also left in there one bat or
- 30:24Speaker 2: too late at times?
- 30:25Speaker 1: Well, that's that I don't think has anything to do
- 30:28Speaker 1: with with innings limits or pinch count that had that
- 30:31Speaker 1: has That's just a strategic decision that a manager makes
- 30:35Speaker 1: in a game. And yes, sometimes they do leave a
- 30:38Speaker 1: guy in a bat or too long, but I think
- 30:41Speaker 1: it has more to do with, uh, the strategy the game,
- 30:44Speaker 1: the information that they have at that time, uh, during
- 30:49Speaker 1: the game, has nothing to do with uh they've left
- 30:52Speaker 1: They've left him in one a bat or too long
- 30:55Speaker 1: because the guy is tiring. I think it's more just
- 30:58Speaker 1: whether it's a left right situation or the pictures had
- 31:04Speaker 1: the pictures had great success against the batter at the plate.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I think that it's more of that than anything else.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Real quick, you know, as being of injuries, I know
- 31:14Speaker 2: that they were over here on the weekend, but I
- 31:16Speaker 2: mean we talked about it. The fact that de Grom
- 31:18Speaker 2: was not re signed by the Mets really wasn't a
- 31:22Speaker 2: bad thing considering now that you know, de Grom's not
- 31:25Speaker 2: been able to throw pitch really for the Rangers. It's
- 31:27Speaker 2: really sad, but he's He's a case where I look
- 31:31Speaker 2: at it and like, how does he get injured so much?
- 31:33Speaker 2: That's why I've been wondering about Jacob de Grom specifically.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I think he throws too hard. I think that that
- 31:39Speaker 1: that was his problem. I think he just threw too hard.
- 31:43Speaker 1: He was unhittable, but he threw too hard and that
- 31:45Speaker 1: put that put a lot of pressure on his ligaments
- 31:48Speaker 1: and his joints. And there's no question about it, and
- 31:51Speaker 1: as much. And I loved watching the Grom pitch. But
- 31:55Speaker 1: the night of Mets lost into the Texas Rangers, that
- 31:59Speaker 1: did not bother me. And I loved watching the guy pitch.
- 32:02Speaker 1: But you know, it's too bad because he truly is
- 32:07Speaker 1: a great talent, and he's thirty five years old, and
- 32:11Speaker 1: he's going to be one of those guys. I mean,
- 32:13Speaker 1: let's look, let's look at Matt Harvey. I thought Matt
- 32:16Speaker 1: Harvey was the best of all of those young guys
- 32:18Speaker 1: that dead Mets brought up, but then he had then
- 32:20Speaker 1: he had the Tommy John but then that thoracic injury,
- 32:25Speaker 1: that's what really did him in. It's just it's just crazy,
- 32:28Speaker 1: and you gotta be careful how you invest money wise
- 32:33Speaker 1: into the pitching game. And this year the Mets have
- 32:35Speaker 1: invested into nothing but number three type starters, three and
- 32:40Speaker 1: four type starters. They have no ace. Sega is an ace,
- 32:43Speaker 1: but he made one start all year, so he's been gone.
- 32:46Speaker 1: He was gone the whole year.
- 32:48Speaker 2: And that is a very fucking non contact player, right
- 32:52Speaker 2: that was that's a first season. Now you talk about injuries,
- 32:57Speaker 2: and I don't know if I'm breaking Newsey right here.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I saw JJ McCarthy out for the season. Now, did
- 33:04Speaker 2: he have problems in Michigan that no one really identified
- 33:08Speaker 2: before his draft? I mean, this is a pretty big
- 33:10Speaker 2: loss for a draft, you know, a first round draft pick.
- 33:14Speaker 2: It's almost really stunning to me. And I wonder if
- 33:17Speaker 2: there were problems in Michigan that were not identified. I
- 33:19Speaker 2: don't know, but it's very very stunning to me.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Well, the Vikings yesterday said they don't know. First of all,
- 33:27Speaker 1: I thought it was just going to be miniscus, and
- 33:30Speaker 1: I don't think they thought that he was going to
- 33:32Speaker 1: be gone the whole year, But they said they don't
- 33:34Speaker 1: know when the injury occurred. They don't know if it
- 33:36Speaker 1: happened Sunday when they were a Saturday when they were
- 33:38Speaker 1: playing the Raiders, which apparently I didn't see the game
- 33:41Speaker 1: where apparently the kid showed a lot of promise. Yes,
- 33:45Speaker 1: it's against base defenses, it's not against any complex defenses
- 33:49Speaker 1: in preseason, but apparently the kid showed very very well.
- 33:55Speaker 1: It's definitely a blow, and it just goes to show
- 33:58Speaker 1: you in the NFL, I don't tear Alex. That's why
- 34:02Speaker 1: we don't make predictions here on who's going to play
- 34:06Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl because it's a week to week
- 34:08Speaker 1: game and guys get injured all the time. Guys get
- 34:11Speaker 1: injured on contact. Uh. It's it's one of the bad
- 34:16Speaker 1: features of the National Football League. It can happen to anybody.
- 34:21Speaker 1: It could happen to Patrick Mahomes. It could happen to anybody.
- 34:25Speaker 1: So that's why we evaluate the games week to week.
- 34:28Speaker 1: But that's a I feel sorry for the kid more
- 34:31Speaker 1: so than the vikings. The only good thing is I
- 34:35Speaker 1: don't know how much of a look he was going
- 34:36Speaker 1: to get this year. I have a feeling they're going
- 34:39Speaker 1: to try to start him at some point in the season,
- 34:41Speaker 1: but again they have Donald, and Donald is not terrible,
- 34:45Speaker 1: so but again.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Hairs there, Lou, Although you got a nice instead of
- 34:50Speaker 2: black hair, he gave you a few grays in there.
- 34:52Speaker 2: I'm sure Sam Donald over the years when he was here.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Well, I think that I think the Jets. I think
- 34:58Speaker 1: the fall was Don the Jets management and coaching staff
- 35:02Speaker 1: more so than Donald. I think Sam Donald is a
- 35:07Speaker 1: very talented guy that the Jets mismanaged, like they mismanaged
- 35:11Speaker 1: a lot of their quarterback situations. As much as we
- 35:14Speaker 1: want to criticize Zach Wilson, and he deserves to be criticized,
- 35:19Speaker 1: there's no way he should have started Week one. He
- 35:22Speaker 1: should have been watching most of that first year. And
- 35:27Speaker 1: you lose those guys after a while because they get
- 35:30Speaker 1: shell shocked. And I think the Jets have done a
- 35:32Speaker 1: terrible job with some of the quarterbacks, with Donald and
- 35:36Speaker 1: Wilson in particular, both of those guys, they've done a
- 35:39Speaker 1: bad job.
- 35:41Speaker 2: All right, Well, one good job. I think that's gonna
- 35:45Speaker 2: happen is and I know he's been criticized for it,
- 35:48Speaker 2: but I'm gonna agree with you here. I think Rogers
- 35:50Speaker 2: is gonna be ready. I know people are like, well,
- 35:52Speaker 2: he's doing this in the training camp, beat in training camp,
- 35:54Speaker 2: But I think you agree. It sounds like you think
- 35:58Speaker 2: he's gonna be fine. The preseason dramas the preseason. Let's
- 36:01Speaker 2: see what happens when he gets on the grid iron
- 36:04Speaker 2: this September. Do you think he's back though? You think
- 36:07Speaker 2: he's ready to go?
- 36:07Speaker 1: Well, I mean I think he's I mean as far
- 36:10Speaker 1: as his skill level unless the the Achilles injury took
- 36:13Speaker 1: away his skill in his skill level, and yes, injuries
- 36:17Speaker 1: do take away your skill level at certain times in
- 36:20Speaker 1: your career. I mean, Joe Burrow is still a young man,
- 36:22Speaker 1: but he's been injured twice in four years. Is he's
- 36:25Speaker 1: still going to be the same athlete he was for
- 36:28Speaker 1: both of these injuries. I don't know. But if if
- 36:34Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers doesn't have any ill effects from the Achilles
- 36:40Speaker 1: tendon injury, now he's gonna He's gonna be terrific for
- 36:42Speaker 1: the Jets. The Jets have a real If the sports
- 36:45Speaker 1: gods smile on the Jets, they should have a very
- 36:48Speaker 1: good year because they have a very good roster and
- 36:51Speaker 1: a deep roster, so I think I think Aaron Rodgers
- 36:56Speaker 1: will will be fine. The thing is, the AFC is very,
- 37:01Speaker 1: very difficult. I think if the Jets were in the NFC,
- 37:03Speaker 1: I would only put the forty nine ers ahead of them.
- 37:07Speaker 1: I will operation.
- 37:09Speaker 2: I mean, Ayuk is in the you know, it's in
- 37:13Speaker 2: limbo with him, and of course that's a big player
- 37:16Speaker 2: right there. Now there are seven teams. It's such a
- 37:19Speaker 2: confusing drama. But it's like he kind of brought this
- 37:22Speaker 2: on himself.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Du didn't he He did? Now, depending on who you believe.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Last night, it seemed like he was going to get
- 37:30Speaker 1: trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers. They had a deal in
- 37:33Speaker 1: place with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This morning, I wake up
- 37:36Speaker 1: and they say Niners and Brandon Ayuk are close to
- 37:40Speaker 1: a new deal. So who knows. Again, he's a great receiver.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I would love to have him on the Jets, but
- 37:50Speaker 1: I assume he's not going to get traded unless these
- 37:55Speaker 1: negotiations fall through. And I'm sure he'll be there on
- 38:00Speaker 1: opening night, that opening Monday night game against the Jets
- 38:02Speaker 1: at San Francisco.
- 38:04Speaker 2: All right, well, let me let me say this on
- 38:06Speaker 2: the injuries front, and I've said it before, I think
- 38:09Speaker 2: to you on this podcast, I'm gonna stick by it.
- 38:12Speaker 2: I'm still thankful we didn't re sign sae Kwon Barkley
- 38:15Speaker 2: on the Giants. I think Mara and Shane Shane, and
- 38:19Speaker 2: you know, even Dable they made the right not bringing
- 38:22Speaker 2: him back. I know that fans hate it, but I
- 38:25Speaker 2: just think he's too injury prone to invest in him. Now.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Well, you know, when we've talked about this, and I
- 38:31Speaker 1: agree with you one hundred percent, investing in running backs
- 38:36Speaker 1: are very tricky. Now, if the Giants were a Super
- 38:40Speaker 1: Bowl contender and he could be the difference maker, then
- 38:44Speaker 1: maybe you bite the bullet and you give him the
- 38:46Speaker 1: money because he's gonna help you win, just like he's
- 38:49Speaker 1: gonna help the Eagles win. And I think the Eagles
- 38:51Speaker 1: have a very good chance to bounce back from that
- 38:53Speaker 1: late season, the disastrous collapse. I still don't know what
- 38:58Speaker 1: happened there. They're gonna they'll be the favorite to win
- 39:02Speaker 1: the NFC East. San Francis is going to be to me,
- 39:05Speaker 1: is the favorite to go back to uh the super Bowl.
- 39:09Speaker 1: That the best team in the the conference, but the
- 39:13Speaker 1: NF the NFC is wide open. There's a lot of
- 39:16Speaker 1: mill Road teams. So I think Chicago has a chance
- 39:19Speaker 1: to be good. So they'll be interesting to watch. They
- 39:23Speaker 1: really upgraded their the offensive side of the ball. Uh,
- 39:29Speaker 1: They're gonna be an interesting watch early on to see
- 39:31Speaker 1: if they're going to move up in the NFC.
- 39:37Speaker 2: I'd love that, and I'd love to see that. From
- 39:38Speaker 2: my dad, who was a huge Bear fan as you know,
- 39:41Speaker 2: who listened to this knows it would be great and looked.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I was really skeptical of Kale and but I thought
- 39:47Speaker 2: he was too Hollywood. I thought he was then the
- 39:48Speaker 2: other but hey, he actually had a decent show in
- 39:51Speaker 2: the first preseason game, so there is some hope there.
- 39:54Speaker 2: All right, back to back to baseball before I wrap
- 39:58Speaker 2: up here, Lou, it can't be the one Soto and
- 40:01Speaker 2: Aaron Judge show the rest of the way if the
- 40:04Speaker 2: Yanks want a real shot at either getting the top
- 40:06Speaker 2: one of the top two spots a division. Seven other
- 40:11Speaker 2: guys in that lineup, they're not doing anything, and it's
- 40:14Speaker 2: very frustrating, and it just seems like I've had Brian
- 40:17Speaker 2: Casper and as you know recently, but I feel like
- 40:20Speaker 2: they don't have good replacements when guys like Jazz Chisholm.
- 40:23Speaker 2: When guys like John Carlow go down, they don't have
- 40:26Speaker 2: that good replacement, and you know, it's like seven other
- 40:30Speaker 2: guys have to step up or they're not going anywhere, right.
- 40:34Speaker 1: I agree with you. I mean, the Yankees have two superstars,
- 40:40Speaker 1: and that should be they should be able to get
- 40:42Speaker 1: enough from the rest of the lineup to help them advance.
- 40:46Speaker 1: And maybe they will, maybe somebody will get hot. But
- 40:49Speaker 1: how many teams have two superstars in the lineup the
- 40:52Speaker 1: Yankees do. Okay, the Dodgers actually have three in BET's,
- 40:57Speaker 1: Freeman and Otan, but that doesn't guarantee you're gonna you're
- 41:04Speaker 1: gonna win. But you're right about the Yankees. The Yankies
- 41:07Speaker 1: have to unless somebody gets hot. Potentially who can get hot.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Glabor Torres obviously has a chance to to contribute. Stan
- 41:17Speaker 1: has a chance to contribute. I don't know what the
- 41:20Speaker 1: deal is with Anthony Rizzo's broken arm, but I keep voting.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Hey, your boy, you're Italian colleague there Volpe. I mean
- 41:29Speaker 2: they're looking for him to get hot again. He got
- 41:31Speaker 2: a streak for a little bit and he cooled down.
- 41:34Speaker 2: You know, the ebbs and tie and flows are getting
- 41:38Speaker 2: a little too much to handle because you know, this
- 41:42Speaker 2: pitching staff, you can expect seventy hitnings, but you gotta
- 41:46Speaker 2: help them out. You gotta get some run support here.
- 41:48Speaker 2: And every night it seems like there's bases loaded. Someone
- 41:52Speaker 2: that isn't Judge your Soto comes up and it's a
- 41:54Speaker 2: double play ball. I just it's a little by boggling
- 41:57Speaker 2: to me. But on one Soto's front, I felt kind
- 42:00Speaker 2: of negative last night saying someone else should step up
- 42:04Speaker 2: because that that might overshadow the fact that he did
- 42:06Speaker 2: have three great home runs, and kudos to him, but
- 42:10Speaker 2: it all so it is frustrating to see just him
- 42:12Speaker 2: and Judge producing. So you can look at it both ways.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Great job for Sodo, but where's everybody else? Right?
- 42:18Speaker 1: No, it's true, and you know, obviously, come playoff time,
- 42:23Speaker 1: these teams are not going to Chicago White Sox might
- 42:26Speaker 1: pitch the Soto, but the Baltimore Orioles or the Houston
- 42:32Speaker 1: Astros they're gonna not get beat by Soda or or
- 42:35Speaker 1: Judge if nobody else is coming through. And like I said,
- 42:42Speaker 1: you mentioned Volpi, but Volpi's a young kid. He's he's
- 42:44Speaker 1: still getting his feet wet, even though he won the
- 42:47Speaker 1: Golden Glove last year, and he you know, he's had
- 42:49Speaker 1: some good spurts offensively. But I think I think they're
- 42:54Speaker 1: gonna need offense from Glaboratres or stant. But you know
- 43:01Speaker 1: the Yankees are carried by by Judge and who will
- 43:05Speaker 1: be the MVP for sure.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Well, you know you said that was pitching around them
- 43:10Speaker 2: even last night, top of the ninth in a for
- 43:13Speaker 2: to one game, I remind you, which is still winnable.
- 43:16Speaker 2: And of course we saw what happened in the bottom
- 43:17Speaker 2: of the ninth last night. But top of the ninth
- 43:20Speaker 2: they walk, so too, they walk Judge.
- 43:22Speaker 1: I saw, I actually I actually was watching at that.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Point and then Wells lines into a hard hit double play.
- 43:28Speaker 2: But that point of walking around them is a real thing.
- 43:31Speaker 2: And you know, I think as a fan, it's it's
- 43:34Speaker 2: it's gotta be pissing the fan of I think as
- 43:37Speaker 2: a player, you know you want to be pitched you,
- 43:39Speaker 2: no matter who you are. So I'm sure Judge and
- 43:42Speaker 2: Soto got a little aggravated that they weren't pitch to.
- 43:45Speaker 2: And I don't know, it's it's just not natural to
- 43:50Speaker 2: want to walk some and that's not how the game's designed.
- 43:53Speaker 1: But the game is designed to win, and if you
- 43:56Speaker 1: have more runs than your opposition, you're going to win.
- 44:00Speaker 1: And if you have to. This is not while it's entertainment,
- 44:04Speaker 1: it's not it's not scripted entertainment. So I would walk
- 44:09Speaker 1: Judge and Soto in a similar situation if I if
- 44:13Speaker 1: it's going to help me win a playoff game or
- 44:16Speaker 1: win a regular season game. Let's face it, if if
- 44:20Speaker 1: the Yankees were playing a team that had a Judge
- 44:24Speaker 1: and Soto type of situation, they're gonna do the same thing.
- 44:28Speaker 1: That just that just how the game is played. You,
- 44:31Speaker 1: as the great uh Herman Edwards once said, you play
- 44:35Speaker 1: to win the game now.
- 44:38Speaker 2: And the scary partners the White Sox almost did have
- 44:40Speaker 2: a chance at that last night, and they brought the.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Winning run to the plate. That was unbelievable. I said
- 44:46Speaker 1: to myself, if there's a Grand Slam hit here, uh
- 44:49Speaker 1: forget it.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Oh my god, but you go.
- 44:53Speaker 1: I want to. I want to. I want to give
- 44:55Speaker 1: you a shout out. I want to give you a shoutot.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Alex Garett and anybody who was interested in an Aaron
- 45:03Speaker 1: Judge fan or interested in hitting you had a fantastic
- 45:07Speaker 1: interview with Aaron Judges' personal hitting coach, Richard Schneck.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Did I say that correctly, Skank? I don't know exactly.
- 45:16Speaker 3: I guess a great interview. It was a great interview,
- 45:21Speaker 3: was interesting and informative. Richard was tremendous.
- 45:26Speaker 1: He is not It's different than if you were talking
- 45:29Speaker 1: to a batting coach of a major league team. He
- 45:33Speaker 1: is not with any major league team. He's not only
- 45:36Speaker 1: Aaron Judges hitting coach. He talked about the kid I
- 45:40Speaker 1: believe his name was, he Sus Vargas in the Mexican League.
- 45:44Speaker 1: He was very interesting. He had some very good opinions
- 45:47Speaker 1: on the state of hitting in twenty twenty four. So
- 45:50Speaker 1: anybody listening to this podcast should listen to that podcast
- 45:54Speaker 1: because that was great. And Alex you you asked great questions.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Congratulates well.
- 46:05Speaker 2: I appreciate that, Lou, And I'll tell you I always
- 46:08Speaker 2: love talking to you and I feel like, you know,
- 46:11Speaker 2: talk about hitting the wheelhouse. I think as a podcaster,
- 46:13Speaker 2: I like to get I like to know my wheelhouse
- 46:17Speaker 2: and Termino's take is definitely in that wheelhouse, as is
- 46:20Speaker 2: adaptive sports, which I've covered as well. I mean, we
- 46:23Speaker 2: can go from anything on this podcast. And I think
- 46:25Speaker 2: you show that and I'm so grateful to have guests
- 46:28Speaker 2: like you every week to be part of this journey.
- 46:32Speaker 2: And I think we talked all their about the progress
- 46:35Speaker 2: of the show.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Alls No, I'm glad that you have me on and
- 46:37Speaker 1: I appreciate him on it to be on with you.
- 46:40Speaker 1: One more thing I want to talk about this week,
- 46:42Speaker 1: and it's a little known situation. Nobody you I know
- 46:46Speaker 1: the next time I'm going to mention a lot of
- 46:48Speaker 1: people probably don't know who he is. Frank Selvy died yesterday.
- 46:53Speaker 1: He was ninety one years old. And the reason why
- 46:55Speaker 1: I mentioned this Frank Selvy was he played for firm
- 46:59Speaker 1: And University in the fifties from in fifty from fifty
- 47:03Speaker 1: one to fifty four, he averaged forty one point seven
- 47:08Speaker 1: points a game in the senior year, which was a
- 47:10Speaker 1: record held until Pete Maravich broke it. He scored one
- 47:15Speaker 1: hundred points in one basketball game. And he's not well
- 47:18Speaker 1: like Will Chamberlain, a seven for two guy. He was
- 47:20Speaker 1: a six ' three skinny guard from from Furman University.
- 47:26Speaker 1: He scored one hundred points on forty one out of
- 47:30Speaker 1: sixty six from the field. Forty one field goals in
- 47:32Speaker 1: sixty six tries, nineteen out of twenty two from the
- 47:36Speaker 1: free throw line. There was no three point line at
- 47:38Speaker 1: the time, and approximately eight or nine of his shots
- 47:43Speaker 1: if there were a three point line would have been
- 47:45Speaker 1: three pointed, so we would ad one hundred and eight
- 47:47Speaker 1: hundred and nine points. It was the first ever televised
- 47:50Speaker 1: live game in the state of South Carolina where Furman
- 47:54Speaker 1: where Furman is. It's the first game at his mother watched.
- 47:57Speaker 1: And the reason I mentioned this is because he was
- 48:00Speaker 1: the first and only college players score one hundred points
- 48:04Speaker 1: playing the NBA for nine years, the average eleven points,
- 48:06Speaker 1: four rebounds, three or six in his nine year NBA career.
- 48:12Speaker 1: He did play one year for the New York's Knicks also.
- 48:14Speaker 1: But when I was first starting to watch basketball, in
- 48:20Speaker 1: game seven against playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, and
- 48:24Speaker 1: they played six or seven times in a row, the
- 48:27Speaker 1: Lakers and the and the Celtics, with the Celtics winning
- 48:31Speaker 1: all seven times. I believe yes, they won all seven times.
- 48:35Speaker 1: He had a chance early on in that streak to
- 48:40Speaker 1: give the Lakers a championship. He missed a baseline jumper
- 48:43Speaker 1: in the sixty two finals and the game went to
- 48:46Speaker 1: overtime after he hit a couple of shots to tie
- 48:49Speaker 1: the game, and the Celtics won in Game seven and overtime.
- 48:53Speaker 1: So I just wanted to bring up a forgotten guy.
- 48:57Speaker 1: He played with Jerry West who passed away recently Laywood
- 49:00Speaker 1: Elgin Baylor. So and he was a great college player
- 49:04Speaker 1: and he had a very solid big career. He's drafted
- 49:07Speaker 1: number one overall by the then Baltimore Bullets. So I
- 49:11Speaker 1: just don't want to throw it at in there. Give
- 49:12Speaker 1: Frank Selvy a little shout out as he passed away
- 49:16Speaker 1: yesterday at the age of ninety one.
- 49:18Speaker 2: And now I'm going to do more research on him.
- 49:21Speaker 2: How about that? So this is why I have you
- 49:23Speaker 2: on your loop for the historical perspective of the game.
- 49:26Speaker 2: And you never missed you hit those home runs when
- 49:29Speaker 2: it comes to the historic asters of these games. So
- 49:32Speaker 2: thanks for shouting him out, and I'm going to do
- 49:34Speaker 2: some more research now on mister Selby.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Yeah. No, it's well, sports history is interesting to me,
- 49:42Speaker 1: just like the history of America, the history of the world.
- 49:47Speaker 1: History should not be forgotten on any level.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Amen to that. Well, lou Terminello, great conversation, and I
- 49:56Speaker 2: got a pop quiz for you. Are you watching the
- 49:59Speaker 2: pair of Olympics this year alongside me and so many
- 50:04Speaker 2: other people?
- 50:05Speaker 1: I will absolutely, of course they are exciting. They're amazing athletes,
- 50:11Speaker 1: they really.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Are, and they're they're very competitive and you know, you
- 50:15Speaker 2: really to get a feel for you just got to
- 50:17Speaker 2: go and step out onto Central Parks, you know, race
- 50:21Speaker 2: course to see them at the marathon every year as well.
- 50:23Speaker 2: They they start off the race and it's just so
- 50:25Speaker 2: exciting to see them across that finish line every year.
- 50:28Speaker 2: So that's just a little sample. But this year I said,
- 50:31Speaker 2: it's not just about uh, you know, it's not. It's
- 50:35Speaker 2: representing so many things the country and people with disabilities
- 50:38Speaker 2: all in one, and I think that's an exciting thing.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Whenever let Peralyn Beans get the chance to do that.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Well, if that is not uplifting for anybody who has
- 50:46Speaker 1: a handicap, who feels down on their on their luck,
- 50:51Speaker 1: and yes they should, but the adaptability of these great
- 50:54Speaker 1: athletes that we're going to see in the Paralympics is
- 50:59Speaker 1: just a tribute to the human spirit. That's what That's
- 51:03Speaker 1: what it really is.
- 51:06Speaker 2: Amen to that. Well, on that note, lude thanks for
- 51:09Speaker 2: joining for another Terminelo's take and uh, let's see what
- 51:12Speaker 2: happens a week from now. We'll see what happens in
- 51:15Speaker 2: the next few next week.
- 51:16Speaker 1: Here looking forward to it. Thank you, Alex, you've got it.
- 51:20Speaker 2: Take care of Louis. Thanks again for joining the Alex
- 51:23Speaker 2: Barratt podcast Network.
