- 0:49We're reporting to you now from National League Field in Boston, where the fourth All-Star Game of history will begin in about 15 minutes.
- 1:19National League Field, a field called Braves Field by the Diet and the Wolfs fans,
- 1:24will not cease then as this time when the folks covered with big names and baseball.
- 1:28Early this morning, the fans began to arrive, and with a day that couldn't be any better,
- 1:32the All-Star Game will make another historical chapter in the series.
- 1:35The proceeds, as you know, are for newbie ballplayers,
- 1:38and a good sum will be realized for these men who contributed to the game in other and better days.
- 1:43This afternoon, the fields, the bleachers are still vacant in a good many sections,
- 1:48so that we still have a chance for good many fans to come out here and get peeps for the game.
- 1:52The grandstand, of course, is in reserve, where we fill it up to 55 game times,
- 1:56but there are still plenty of peeps out there in the bleachers,
- 1:59many vacant spots being noted by those of us who are in the booth here at the grandstand.
- 2:04And this attendance now, which I think is at approximately about 28 or 30 thousand,
- 2:08you think that's a fair estimate Fred, 28 or 30 thousand,
- 2:11compares this way with the attendance of the previous All-Star Game.
- 2:15Roaches in Chicago in 1933, where the idea of the game, by the way, was originated by our squad,
- 2:20the attendance was close to 50 thousand.
- 2:22In New York in 1934, there were nearly 49 thousand fans,
- 2:26and in Cleveland last year, almost 70 thousand fans watched the leading players of both leagues.
- 2:31So far, the fans of the American League have won all of our games, and here's the stuff.
- 2:36The results of the Blast-Off Star Battles in 1933 at Konitsky Park in Chicago,
- 2:41the American League has won by a score of 4-2, four runs, 12 hits, and one error.
- 2:48The National All-Star has two runs, eight hits, and no error.
- 2:52At that time, Hallahan, Warnocky, and Hubbell, and Wilson, and Hartnett,
- 2:56and Gomez, Carter, Grove, Benwick, Perl, around the mound and tracking with specs.
- 3:01In 1934 at the Polo grounds in New York, the American League has again won by a score of 9-7,
- 3:07nine runs, 14 hits, and one error. The National League has seven runs, eight hits, and one error.
- 3:14And the batteries, Hubbell, Warnocky, Mungo, Busydeen, Frankhouse, and Hartnett, and Lopez,
- 3:19Gomez, Ruffing, Harder, Vicki, and Cochran.
- 3:22In 1935 at the Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, the American League has again won,
- 3:27this time by a score of 4-1, four runs, eight hits, and no errors.
- 3:31The National League has one run, four hits, and one error.
- 3:34Walker, Tumac, and Berringer, Busydeen, and Wilson, and Hartnett, Gomez, Carter, and Henry, were the best.
- 3:40And now, plenty of the fans are out here today hoping for a National League win.
- 3:45Advancing the idea that Charlie Grimm will make it a ballgame with plenty of fight in it
- 3:48rather than a parade of stars before the fans, they expect to see the National League
- 3:52as a voice of force to keep in this all-star series.
- 3:55Joe McCarty, the American League manager, said to the committee for Mickey Cotton,
- 3:59except for being fond of the feeling that the game should be considered an exhibition game
- 4:04and that plenty of substitutions could be made in order to give the fans a chance to see their face.
- 4:08More than two million fans have made the selections of the players,
- 4:11and each manager is adding to the results of the polls his own selections of additional players.
- 4:15And here is the squad as it is out here at National League Field of A's for the American League.
- 4:20In the outfield, don't imagine, New York, early April season,
- 4:23Luke Gatlin of Detroit, George Selkirk of New York, Ray Ratsap of Chicago, Ben Chapman of Washington,
- 4:30Ian Fielders, Wally Garinger of Detroit, Luke Gatlin of Chicago, Frank Pacetti of New York,
- 4:35Luke Derrig of New York, Jimmy Fox of Boston, Boston Redparks, and Frankie Higgins of Philadelphia.
- 4:41This is Leslie Grove of Boston, Vernon Kennedy of Chicago, Mel Harder of Cleveland, Vernon Gomez of New York,
- 4:47Monte Kershman of New York, and Shulboi Rowe of Detroit. That's just Rick Perrow of the Red Sox, Bill Dickey of the Yankees,
- 4:53and Raleigh Hemsley of St. Louis. The manager of our total will be Joe McCarty who's substituting for Mickey Stockings,
- 4:59and Joe Cunningham, the Red Sox manager, will be a coach along with Arthur Fletcher of New York,
- 5:04with a co-owner for the American League squad, Scott Tindall of New York.
- 5:08And here's the National League squad as it will fit in the bag out. Outfield is Joe Medrick St. Louis,
- 5:14Mel Art in New York, Wally Berger of Boston, Argie DeLong of Chicago, Frank Cremere of Chicago, Joe Moore of New York.
- 5:22Infielders will be Bill Herman of Chicago, Aki Vaughn of Pittsburgh, Jimmy Collins St. Louis, Leota Rocha of St. Louis,
- 5:29Bill Riggs of Cincinnati, Gus Stewart of Pittsburgh, Bill Martin of St. Louis, and Arthur Whitney of County of Akerskin.
- 5:37The pitchers will be Dizzy Jean of St. Louis, Kyle Hubbell of New York, Kirk Davis of Chicago,
- 5:41Van Mungo of Brooklyn, Lon Warnocky of Chicago, and the catchers will be Gabby Houghton of Chicago,
- 5:47and Ernie Lombardi of Cincinnati. Charlie Broom will manage the National League squad,
- 5:52and the coaches will be Bill McKechnie of the Boston Bees and Jimmy Wilson of Philadelphia.
- 5:57The trainer is Andy Lockjaw of Chicago, and the umpires for today's game will be Bill Stewart, John R. Riddon,
- 6:04William Summers, and Louis Cole. And for the win when he gives you the play-by-play to Strypton,
- 6:09we'll give you the starting lineup as it is announced for the beginning of the game this afternoon.
- 6:14There goes a cheer from the crowd and the applause as that comedy man of baseball, Al Schaac,
- 6:18comes out to a square ring which has been five fighting rings which has been just put up just on the third base line.
- 6:27And Al with his characteristic long tailed coat and with his under-draws,
- 6:35and that's what he's wearing today, showing with a soft roll down, has gone into his old gag
- 6:39with a few of his trainers and a second down there, and that's pantomime dice game.
- 6:44And as he rolls the dice and calls for the lock of the corner which he gets,
- 6:49he loses and of course goes through the characteristic motions of the man who has lost what he wants to win.
- 6:57And now he has taken his long tailed coat off and he has a pair of purple tights and a jersey that is half white and half black.
- 7:03He's made up to resemble a colored boxer and I don't know whether he's going to a pantomime
- 7:08or whether he's going to have an opponent. I guess it's going to be a little shadow boxing.
- 7:12He steps out to receive the applause of the crowd. His seconds take him over to the corner,
- 7:17one corner and then the other so that Al Schaac is going to play both corners.
- 7:22And now there is the referee as he raises his hand and Al Schaac still arms to him,
- 7:28and I think that this will be a shadow boxing exhibition on the part of Al Schaac.
- 7:33While Al is going through that pantomime down there, let me give you the batting averages of the outfielders
- 7:38and the American League squad. The Nugger of New York, 358, Avril of Cleveland, 348,
- 7:4312th of New York, 318, Radcliffe of Chicago, 375, Kaplan of Washington, 285, and Garvin of Detroit, 321.
- 7:52And boy, those two are out batting average. The catchers are Dickie of New York, 362,
- 7:58Hemsley of St. Louis, 298, and Rick Ferrell of Boston, 280.
- 8:04All of this cheering and laughter which you hear from the background, from the fans here,
- 8:08for Al Schaac who has just knocked himself down as he is doing a shadow boxing.
- 8:12There's the count on the part of the referee. He gets up at the count of four and as he gets up,
- 8:16he gets his own glove in the way, knocks himself out again, and the water boy and all the seconds left in
- 8:20to see if they can revive Mr. Schaac. Again, the batting averages of the American League
- 8:24are given to the infielders, Geringa of Detroit, 356, Affling of Chicago, 370,
- 8:31Gerrig of New York, 399, Jimmy Ponce of Boston, 331, Higgins of Philadelphia, 285,
- 8:37and Percetti of New York, 319. That laughter from the fans came as Al Schaac went to his corner
- 8:44and is supposedly knocked out and instead of him being revived, he started to revive his trainer
- 8:49who assumed his place on the stool in the corner. Schaac is now divvying himself around down there.
- 8:54As he is made up in blackface, as I have told you, half of his face is black and the other half has not had any makeup on it.
- 9:00And he is going through now a slow motion gag of his which has always been particularly popular with the fans.
- 9:07The referee is also going through the slow motion and with a slow motion smack to his skin,
- 9:13he is going through all of the different punches that you see when you see a pride fight.
- 9:22He is right down in slow motion and I think he is getting a little applause for this gesture
- 9:26as he knocks himself out in slow motion and the audience is relaxed and in response.
- 9:33There is a big puddle of water right there safe which takes his makeup off and the fans are being treated to a lot of fun here
- 9:40before the ball is started to pass the ball. I think we can pick up the applause from out there for our Schaac.
- 9:49Thank you very much, Donny.
- 9:51Second for taking down the ring from the third baseline and Schaac now is posing for the various photographers
- 9:56after he has given his comedy sketch to the fans who are here at the National League here.
- 10:01Still plenty of seats in the bleachers with Lexington's here so that those who live around the territory
- 10:05where the game is being played, if they get out here I think they'll have a chance to get some seats this afternoon.
- 10:09Don't you think so, Brad?
- 10:11It would be a great game to come out and watch and it's a wonderful day for a ball game.
- 10:15Let me give you now the records of the pictures in the American League All-Star scores.
- 10:20Wesley Grove of Boston, 110 and lost three. Gomez of New York, 17 and lost three.
- 10:25Ronnie Kemp of New York, 111 and lost three.
- 10:29Goodboy Roe of Detroit, 17 and lost four. Kennedy of Sadler, 19 and lost four.
- 10:35Cleveland, 110 and lost six. There are the averages for the American League squad.
- 10:40Now let's look over at the National League statistics.
- 10:44The outfielders we have Medlick of St. Louis, 329.
- 10:48Hart of New York, 321. Berger of Boston, 268.
- 10:52Demaray of Chicago, 328. Moore of New York, 307.
- 10:56And Augie Gellarne of Chicago, 284.
- 11:00Two catches on the National League squad. Hartnett of Chicago and Lombardi of Cincinnati.
- 11:05Hartnett with 308 average and Lombardi with 314.
- 11:10And the infield averages of the members of the squad.
- 11:13Herman of Chicago, 316. Lorne of Pittsburgh, 292.
- 11:17Seward of Pittsburgh, 349. Collins of St. Louis, 329.
- 11:22Turing Martin of St. Louis, 349.
- 11:24Piggy Whitney of Philadelphia, 277. The older roaster of St. Louis, 301. And Riggs of Cincinnati, 251.
- 11:31And here is the average of the pitchers of the National League squad.
- 11:36Lizzie Deena of St. Louis, 114 and lost four.
- 11:39That's against Betsy Grove, winning of 10 and losing a three game.
- 11:43Hubbell of New York, 10 and five.
- 11:46Mungo of Brooklyn, eight, one eight and lost ten.
- 11:49Warnocky of Chicago, one eight, one eight and lost four.
- 11:55And Davis of Chicago, an even up with seven and seven.
- 11:58And Freddie, I have a note for me, which I'd like you to put in, Fred.
- 12:01Will you give the value of my phone here?
- 12:03Goal was 111 and lost three. He won seven games.
- 12:06Okay, I could have told you, fans, that these statistics that I'm giving to you come up for the holiday games.
- 12:11And Fred, of course, who is broadcasting the games every day here, always has the last minute statistics.
- 12:16So the Betjors left the another win.
- 12:19That was the one and nothing shutout, wasn't it, Fred, over the athletic.
- 12:23And now the umpires of the day, Bill Stewart and Johnny Redden and Bill Summers and Louis Coles are down around home plate.
- 12:30And I think that's the few minutes they'll be detecting the ground rules with the board of strategy of the American League as well as the National League squad.
- 12:40I think there's Joe Coleman down there, the Red Sox and Arthur Fletcher of New York and Joe Masabi, the American League board of strategy.
- 12:48And I've been touring with Ben, Charlie Gim and the others who are managing along with him, Joe McTexas of the D and Jimmy Wilson of Philadelphia.
- 13:00So the back-up that you're doing now, and I'm going to ask Fred if he'll give you the starting lineup of the All-Star game.
- 13:05You want that.
- 13:06All right, well, I understand it.
- 13:08All right.
- 13:10Hello, everybody.
- 13:12Hello, everybody.
- 13:13Fred Hoy speaking.
- 13:14I'd like to broadcast the All-Star game between the Americans and the Sweet Team.
- 13:19Here's the American League batting order.
- 13:23Batting number one is Luke Affleck, the shortstop from the White Sox.
- 13:27Batting number two is Charlie Carringer, the second baseman from Detroit.
- 13:32Batting number three is Joe DiMaggio, playing right field from the York Inks.
- 13:37Batting number four is Luke Gehry, first baseman from the New York Inks.
- 13:42In center field, batting number five is Earl Averill, center fielder from Cleveland.
- 13:48Then comes Rick Perrow, the catcher from the Red Sox.
- 13:53Left field, Rip Radcliffe from the White Sox.
- 13:56And Frank Pinky Higgins, third baseman.
- 13:59And comes Lefty Gold, the pitcher.
- 14:02And to the National League, batting number one is Augie Galland from the Chicago Cubs, center fielder.
- 14:09Batting number two is Billy Herman, second baseman from the Chicago Cubs.
- 14:13Batting number three is Ripp Collins, first baseman from the Cardinals.
- 14:18In left field is Joe Medlich from the Cardinals.
- 14:22In right field, Frank Demery from the Chicago Cubs.
- 14:27Catcher, Gabby Hartner from the Chicago Cubs.
- 14:31Third baseman, Pinky Whitman from the Phillies.
- 14:35And top, field derosier from the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 14:40And pitcher, Dizzy Dean on the card.
- 14:46Lefty Gold pitching for the American League team is 111 games to all three.
- 14:50Dizzy Dean pitching for the National League team is 114 and all four.
- 14:57The umpires are now on the huddle down there with the coaches and captains over the ground road here.
- 15:04Since they've changed this field around here, they've moved it 15 feet to the left here.
- 15:11Here are the grandstands.
- 15:13They have to have very long discussion before every series on the new ground road.
- 15:20The umpires are playing. We'll be seeing Britain.
- 15:23And we don't want to just have those other umpires go out of work.
- 15:25The other umpires are Bill Summers, Bill Stewart, and Louis Cole.
- 15:31And three of those umpires come from Massachusetts.
- 15:35Bill Stewart is from Milton, Massachusetts.
- 15:38Bill Summers is from Upton, Massachusetts.
- 15:42And Dean's written, born and raised in Taunton, Massachusetts.
- 15:51The first batter coming up for the American League will be Luke Adling.
- 15:58Luke is 25 years old, stands 5'10, and weighs 175.
- 16:03Last season Luke batted 307. He's now batting 315.
- 16:09A lot of 375 fans.
- 16:12He's second to Luke Adling in the American League batting average.
- 16:18Adling has played in one home star game.
- 16:21He went to bat four times, made one hit, and had an average of 250.
- 16:30We have another chance to see this incredible player, Joe DiMaggio here, Bob Yankee.
- 16:37And recently Joe Cole, manager at the Red Sox, made him a wonderful tribute.
- 16:41He says, Joe says, if I had a boy whom I wanted to teach the proper way to bat,
- 16:46I can study DiMaggio at the plate.
- 16:49When I first broke into the major leagues, several good batters gave me some very definite instructions.
- 16:54I can remember all the things they told me to do right now.
- 16:58And when I see DiMaggio up at bat, I can't help recall those instructions
- 17:02because he does everything just according to Hoyle.
- 17:05DiMaggio stands with his bat steady and ready.
- 17:08He takes only a short step, hits with a level swing.
- 17:11He delays his swing until he sees what type of kick is coming.
- 17:15He inside pitches. He punches outside pitches to right field.
- 17:19He seems to be a batter without a weakness. He seldom strikes out.
- 17:23When you get him out, you consider yourself lucky.
- 17:25That's a wonderful tribute to that successful boy, Joe DiMaggio,
- 17:28who stands with his home by his fellow township, Joe Corran, manager of the Boston Red Sox.
- 17:34Now, I'm probably still discussing the ground rules out of here.
- 17:38There's Charlie Grimm, Joe McCartney, Bill McKechnie, Joe Corran, Leo DeRosa, everybody but Al Jack.
- 17:55They're really phenomenal from the field. They've got a plate up there on the top of the front box.
- 18:00And we're about to start this game.
- 18:05The grandstand is well filled up.
- 18:08Some people in the left field are going to be too.
- 18:11And also on first base.
- 18:13The grandstand is fairly well filled up.
- 18:23We're ready to go.
- 18:25That's a man. Here's Langer.
- 18:27Thank you very much, Bud.
- 18:28Well, we've been beginning a little difficulty before we start our game down here.
- 18:32The umpires and the managers of both clubs, the All-Star clubs, have been in a long conference down here on the ground rules.
- 18:39And, Bud, you check me if I'm incorrecting this, but I think that they have gone through this conference just beyond home plate.
- 18:48And I think I probably overheard the umpire call for Judge Lander over there.
- 18:53Yes, I think that's right. Isn't that the commissioner who's coming up?
- 18:56And now the both boards of strategy and the umpires are conferring with Judge Lander just outside the dugout of the American Regal.
- 19:06So we're wearing the traveling uniform today.
- 19:09And the conference, imagine, will be over some point of the ground rules.
- 19:14This is the largest slaying effort of any field in either league.
- 19:17And, of course, no ground rules are in effect because there's still plenty of room for the crowd here.
- 19:24And, of course, before the game began, Bob Finn, with Rich Kyle, according to this game, over in Washington,
- 19:30has given out the information that only the capacity of 42,000 would be allowed.
- 19:35That's a still chance for a few thousand to get into the game.
- 19:38There's the judge who once again has stepped in to the ground rules argument.
- 19:42And there goes the applause from the crowd as the judge goes back to his box beyond the dugout.
- 19:46And the umpires want to take their positions on the field.
- 19:50And the National League will take the field if they go off the dugout.
- 19:53And here's Fred Hoy for a play-by-play description.
- 19:56Take it away, Fred.
- 19:57Here we are.
- 19:58And once more, I'll give you that batting on.
- 20:01It'll be Mark and me, Hampton, North Stop, Garinger, Second Base, DiMaggio, Right Field,
- 20:06Geary, First Base, Able, Center Field, Brickwell, Catch, Radcliffe, Left, Hagegans on Third, and Grove, Youth, Pickle.
- 20:16And in the field for the National League, Brooke Collins on First Base, Billy Herman is on Second,
- 20:21Leo DeRose is playing in the short, Pinky Whitney is on Third, Joe Medwitch is in Left,
- 20:25Paul Eaglin in the center, and Frank Jemmell is in Right.
- 20:29The DGD is out there now warming up with Gabby Hyman, Luke Hampling, next to the bat.
- 20:37And once more, Luke Hampling is 25 years old, stands 5th and weighs 175.
- 20:43Luke Hampling was born and grew up here, and now makes his home in High Point, North Carolina.
- 20:49The RCC batting 307, he's now batting 275, he's number 2nd in the batting order,
- 20:55and there's a cold strike on Hampling, cold strike on Luke Hampling,
- 21:00now Dizzy Brady, got his motion and here's the pitch again.
- 21:05Another cold strike, two strikes on Hampling, boy how that team is buzzing him in there.
- 21:12Another cold strike, two strikes, two and a half, and here it comes, foul, right field, foul ground,
- 21:25coaching at First Base, Paul E. Merrigan, Joe Collins, Merrigan will be lost to Weston,
- 21:30and at Third Base, coaching is on Western.
- 21:32Too high, ball one, two strikes, one ball, the count on Hampling, two and one.
- 21:43And Dizzy's got the motion, here it comes, too high and close, ball two, two and two.
- 21:51Dizzy appears to be working very fast out there, the count on Hampling is two and two.
- 21:59Next batter is Carringer, following Carringer is Joe DiMarco.
- 22:07Two and two, and here it comes, as a foul, First Base reaches, two and two.
- 22:20Down by the plate, it seems we're in at First Base, two summers, at Second,
- 22:25and a third, Louis Cole, too high and close, ball three, three and two, the count on Hampling,
- 22:35three and two, now Dizzy starts his motion, and here it comes, another foul,
- 22:40over the roof, two, three and two, three balls, two strikes.
- 22:55Dizzy's on the rubber, Dodgers wind up, here it comes, too high and he walks,
- 23:00Joe Hampling hits the base on ball, that brings up Talley Garages,
- 23:08second baseman from Detroit, left hand batter.
- 23:11Talley is 33 years old, stands 5'11", weighs 180.
- 23:15Talley was born in Farleville, Michigan, now lives in Detroit, Michigan.
- 23:19Last season he batted 330, now batting 366.
- 23:23He's number three in American League and batting, being led by Luke Garrick and Luke Affleck.
- 23:29Been in three All-Star games and has batted 444 of the three games.
- 23:33Ball strike on Carringer, one of the greatest second basemen of all time.
- 23:43Right in the crowd was Larry Lesway, Betty Collins and Johnny Evers.
- 23:47There's a foul out there, left field foul bound, over goes Whitney Borg and Pinky Connery.
- 23:55On the count on Carringer, two strikes.
- 24:04Doing nothing.
- 24:07Another great second baseman I failed to mention just a moment ago is Frankie Frisch,
- 24:11Dodgers manager with a great second base.
- 24:18Doing nothing, two strikes on Carringer, Hampling on first, nobody out.
- 24:21There's a foul in the play box.
- 24:28This play box certainly is jammed.
- 24:30We have fighters from all over the country.
- 24:34A great one right over there, Bill Cunningham, Damon Rungan.
- 24:39Doing nothing.
- 24:41There's a pump fly down to DeRozier's short field catch it.
- 24:46Carringer pops out to DeRozier's short, one man gone.
- 24:49And here comes that fantastic Joe DiMaggio, from San Francisco.
- 24:57Joe is 21 years old, stands 6 feet, broadweights 185.
- 25:01He was born in Montanese, California, now lives in San Francisco.
- 25:08Bounding.358 for the Yankees, last year was San Francisco, he batted.399.
- 25:13And there's a foul down to Whitney, fourth play at second and a double play at first.
- 25:20Joe DiMaggio hits in the double play, DiMaggio.
- 25:24Fouls to Whitney at third, Whitney.
