- 6:06They'll be in the next line too. You know why you're here, Charlie?
- 6:10Yeah? Why cop said we slugged the guy, did you? I

- 6:36Janitor? Oh? Yes, No, why you've arrested Tom? Oh?
- 6:41Imagine's about that girls found murdered? Isn't it that Gene Bellamy? What
- 6:45do you know about it? Tom? Oh? Read about in papers.
- 6:47It is a brutal thing, beating the death like that, that's all you
- 6:51know? Yeah, brutal thing. Though. What were you doing at the
- 6:55Brent free Way under past, Tom? When you mean Saed when the officers
- 6:59picked up? Oh, I was walking home from work at two in the
- 7:01morning. I often worked late at night. That's what I was doing last
- 7:05night. I was working late. That girl was found dead in the underpass
- 7:09time, Yeah, I know that s How do you know all right about
- 7:12it in the papers? Any questions or identifications from the audience? Just a
- 7:15minute, Sergeant, what do you think, missus Tartan? I don't know,
- 7:20Luten. It could have been him the man I saw, and then
- 7:25then he couldn't. I don't know, Lieutenant better whole number three? Sergeant,
- 7:44where's number three? Ben Tom Croucher cines bringing him up? You witness
- 7:48identify him? She saw someone running away from the underpass about the time Jean
- 7:53Bellaman was killed, but she wasn't too sure it was him. It's like
- 7:57everything else about this killing. Nobody sure of anything except that Jean Bellamy was
- 8:01mooded. How much you got out of big Yah? There it is age
- 8:07twenty three, vaccasion, single, lived at four two one Hampton Court.
- 8:13What's the lad lady say? Had an apartment there alone, quiet respectable went
- 8:18out a lot, but no parties in the apartment. Worked as a car
- 8:22hop at Rutger's Drive. In their six months. One of the top girls
- 8:26friendly with everyone left work alone at eight o'clock the night she was killed.
- 8:30It looks like that's all. Uh, And I said, can't find anybody
- 8:33who saw from the time she left work until the squad car founder in the
- 8:37underpass at one seventeen the next morning. Makes a tough deal like this,
- 8:41No suspects, no motives, no witnesses. Maybe a crustal will clean it
- 8:43up for use. Pretty optimistic, I said, maybe? Yeah, top
- 8:48Uh. She had said, you let Sergeant Carter in the line time.
- 8:50This is Lieutan Guthrie Gladin million time. Sit down, Tom? Thank you?
- 9:00Now why you hear Tom? Well, no, not exactly. No,
- 9:03somebody out there identifying me for something? Should they have? Oh?
- 9:07I don't know. After all this big important murder and everything, I already
- 9:11made a big splash in the papers. Then the murders usually do. Yeah,
- 9:15lots of publicity. Or you said, you right about the murder and
- 9:18the papers. That's right. I could hardly miss it, all the headlines
- 9:22and anything about all you know about it? Well, why should I know
- 9:26anything else? Who we're asking you? Yeah? Coffee smells kid, You
- 9:31don't want some? You know? I know? I think it keeps me
- 9:33awake. What do you know about the murder? Tom? Well, why
- 9:39do you want me to startle the time you killed Jean Bellamy? Oh?
- 9:43Yeah, of course? The color? Why tom? Oh, I guess
- 9:46I love Gene too much at the ten? I guess that's what I come
- 9:50tell us about a ton? Oh, it's really pretty simples, like I
- 9:52said, Uh see, you know, but tell me, I think I'd
- 9:56change my mind. Why about that coffee? Could have a couple of please,
- 10:00Yeah, I'll get it. You said it was a pretty simple toime.
- 10:03Oh yeah, like I said, You see, I loved Gene,
- 10:05only she didn't love me. There was a story like that once the magazine
- 10:09I read they called it unrequited romance. You know that sounds pretty in there
- 10:16is that coffee ready? Side? Yeah? I heard it is tough free
- 10:20shout oh black please? Huh? Where'd you kill him? But it was
- 10:22in the burnt freeway underpast. It was two nights ago. You see,
- 10:26she'd finally need to go for a walk with me after she got through work.
- 10:31She never had before, so she said she would that night. I
- 10:35guess she was just sorry for him. I didn't ask her to be sorry
- 10:37for me. That's not what I wanted from her, but I I guess
- 10:39she wasn't there, So we went for a walk to the Brunt Freeway underpass.
- 10:43Yeah, that's right. What happened in Tom, hm, and what
- 10:48happened in the underpast? I killed her? What you use? Say that
- 10:52coffee is good? Probably keep me a work. What did you use,
- 10:54Tom? What weapon you need? Yeah? H well, it was an
- 10:58old piece of pipe I found in the underpass. You know, it's funny.
- 11:01I was gonna kill her all the time, but I hadn't figured out
- 11:03how yet. And I saw an old piece of pipe there. I guess
- 11:07I was lucky. What'd you do with it afterwards? The pipe? You
- 11:09mean? Yeah? Well, there's uh that lagoon near the underpass. The
- 11:13water's pretty deep there, understanding through it and there. That made it a
- 11:16pretty perfect crime. I've had m say, you know that turn, I'm
- 11:22sorry run abound? Well, because I threw that pipe away. That would
- 11:26have made things easier for you. The fingerprints and everything. Hey, yeah,
- 11:31I guess that was a mistake. It wasn't your biggest one. What
- 11:45do you think that? Well? Coats's story checks out, only you don't
- 11:50believe him. Everything he told us he could have read on the papers.
- 11:54All we've got is his confession, no corroborating evidence. Yeah, I don't
- 11:56make a tough unless if he's a confession saying dark corsom all had he finish
- 12:01with him? And that's fine? Now that time, ah An Augustany and
- 12:07Sergeant Carger. What kind of troubles bring you to your gentleman, mental?
- 12:11Physical or romatic? Now just tell us how romantic Crutz's confession was done.
- 12:16Oh yeah, Thomas Alvakrutzer an interesting character. Thomas Freud would have had a
- 12:22field day with him. He's a confessing simon. Well there's that day and
- 12:28I half shot. What makes a guy do a thing like that? Dock
- 12:31fet to a crime he didn't commit. M it's a curious phenomenon. If
- 12:35you have a couple of hours to spare, I'd be happy. I will,
- 12:37So ye're on, doc. No one to like choe curiosity, alright,
- 12:41chalk whenever, resistible psychological need for attention? Why not boil it down
- 12:46that way in your report? Next pairs a fire me but not giving you
- 12:48that much? Is he's right here? Kevin? Huh nice Guthrie Waldo,
- 12:58man, God, something boy on that girl? Be right there, Ah,
- 13:15come in man count there's a confession, Sam looks like it though,
- 13:20Well, there's something else for you to work on. Black address book,
- 13:24Geen Bellamyes, that's right. Where did turn up? Came to the mail
- 13:28this morning? Anything with it's note letter? It's just that plain envelope addrest
- 13:33with letters cut from newspaper headlines dropped at Fifth and Central around five o'clock yesterday
- 13:37afternoon. Any prints letter carriers sawters, Geen bellamies some partials from another woman's
- 13:45left hand? What did Layton Prince say? No record forwarding to the FBI.
- 13:52Hey, plenty of names in this book, all men, let's be

- 14:43a car. Body, just a car, Sargeant, what you said.
- 14:46This isn't just the car. It's a Plymouth, the new Plymouth. They're

- 15:26needs is a new Plymouth. Look, can we talk about this in the
- 15:46hall, Lieutenant? My boss finds out the cops are talking to me.
- 15:48Ok, look, lieutenant, about this Jean Bellamy. I I don't know
- 15:56nothing about it. You knew it, didn't? Oh? Sure? Sure
- 15:58I knew it? Well, that is. I took her out twice,
- 16:02and that's all, Lieutenant honest. Now, when's the last time you saw
- 16:03her? Oh? Maybe a year ago? A year and a half.
- 16:07She formed me a couple of times afterwards as for money, but I didn't
- 16:10see her again. You see, I don't know nothing about this, Lieutenant
- 16:12honest. Yes, that's right, Lieutenant. Janie never quite friendly for a
- 16:23work? How long ago, mister have a camp? Have we stopped seeing
- 16:26it? Untilling? About six months ago? And why I was? Then?
- 16:29I came to my senses. I guess I'm a married man, two
- 16:32children in high school, an elder of my church. I'm quite ashamed of
- 16:36myself now. But a beautiful girl like Jean can have an awful hold on
- 16:38a middle aged man Chester. Oh sure, Jeane went for me in a
- 16:48big way, Sergeant. We hit the hot spots together for a while.
- 16:52I haven't seen her for maybe two three months. You know how it is,
- 16:56sergeant, Or what hot spots did you hit? Richie? Well,
- 17:00there was always one joint she wanted to go to all across on avenue with
- 17:03the Blue Parrot, and always the same joint. What's to do in the
- 17:07nightclub? I got inside a blue parrot. It's like a dump. Uh
- 17:25huh, it's not too busy. That's earlier. Probably be jammed another hour
- 17:38or two. Come on in, boy, I've got a good table for
- 17:41you. Right over here are the manager. Oh that means if people don't
- 17:45get here this early, tell your troubles to Alma. We want information.
- 17:48Alma stops. That's right, let's see sure. Uh huh, let's talk
- 17:56over here. Sit down, have something on her house? No thanks,
- 18:02cure, no thanks? He give me a bourbon on the rocks. Joe,
- 18:04okay, al what's on your mind? Boys? Jean Bellamy, that
- 18:08figured you knew her? Sure, a real tough break for that kid.
- 18:12What can you tell us about her? Oh? Swell kid, always laughing
- 18:15like a good time. Nuts for the kind of music they play here.
- 18:18She hung around here a lot, almost every night. Why she wasn't out
- 18:22on a town if that's what you mean. She knew lots of men.
- 18:26She wasn't out on a town. Just didn't want to be a car hop
- 18:29all the night. So she was looking for the right guy. She ever
- 18:32find him? She said she did when the night she was killed she was
- 18:36in here? Then that's right? Anybody with it? Amah? Thanks Joe?
- 18:40Who is with Gene that night? Nobody be sure? I said,
- 18:44nobody? What about this guy she said she'd found? She just said she
- 18:48found him. Give his name? Anything else about him? Nothing? What
- 18:51time she leave here? Eleven thirty? Hello? She met somebody outside?
- 18:55Man? Yeah? Ever seen him before? Yeah? Used to come here
- 18:57with Gene pretty often. Haven't seen him the six or eight months? So
- 19:00you know his name? No? And what's he looked like? Oh?
- 19:03He's forty five fifteen, medium, hip, has a little scar in a
- 19:07corner of his mouth, corn room glasses. Nice looking guy. The car,
- 19:11yeah, what can I don't know? It was a nice looking car,
- 19:15pretty new. I don't know what kind though. What color was it
- 19:18blue? I think some kind of light blue. Did you happen to notice
- 19:22the license number? Hey? Did you ever play license plate poker? Trying
- 19:27to make the best poker hand out of the numbers you see in license?
- 19:30Yeah? I play it all the time, make mind bets with myself.
- 19:33Sounds crazy, but I like it. What about it? Well? When
- 19:34I come in here that night, The best hand i'd seen was two pairs
- 19:37nine's overduces. The guy who drove Genuay that night beat me. You remember
- 19:42what he beat you in? A low straight four or five, six seven
- 19:45eight. You sure about that? Yeah? Sure, look like a good
- 19:49bet for a winning hand. Not for Jean Bellamy. It wasn't how'd you
- 20:07do? Pete? You're right about a man ben. Get the report from
- 20:11motor vehicle. Yeah, a license number ten x four five six seven eight
- 20:15issued to John w I have a camp six' eleven lest you drive?
- 20:19Uh? From Alma's description, it had to be him. He was driving
- 20:22a coup the day we questioned him. Oh that was his wife's car.
- 20:26Neighbors say he hasn't been driving in the dances the day after Jean Bellamy was
- 20:29killed. Anybody checking for clines, but not all day. I gotta get
- 20:33some cigarettes. Oh, hey him, one of mine makes me cough.
- 20:34That's not what the ads say. They still make me cough. Can we
- 20:40pinant on have a camp? I don't know. Good defense lay could blow
- 20:44Alma's testimony sky higher. She got a record path two counts drunk driving disturbing
- 20:49the peace, Prince don't match with those on Jean Bellamy's address book. Though,
- 20:55do you need any cigarettes? Uh? I have a camp Ambibi's phony.
- 21:00Claimed to be at a movie at the Great Western Theater and was closed
- 21:03that night. Was decorating. I don't help. Maybe anymotive. He told
- 21:07us he stopped seeing Jean Bellamy six months ago when his family's say came to
- 21:11his senses. Only his wife had a divorce action on November tenth, mental
- 21:19cruelty for just a week ago. Yeah, a couple of days after Jean
- 21:23Vellamy died. Talk to the wife. Yeah, just as soon as yetherine
- 21:32quiet ben, I found a have Acamps to Dame? Where is it?
- 21:34The Leicster upholstery shop eleventh Central having no seat covers, put in bloodstains on
- 21:38the upholstering. Yeah. Have Acamp told me how a bad nose? Believe?
- 21:41I'll give him a chance to prove it. Want to try to back?
- 22:08No, No, somebody's coming? What is it? Please? Is
- 22:15mister Habricamp at home? What did you want to see him about? We're
- 22:18police officers, police, that's right? Is ian? No? No,
- 22:22he's not home? Are you missus havericam? Yes? When do you expect
- 22:26your husband? Missus Hacamp. I don't know. Will it be homely to
- 22:30this evening? I don't know where is he not? I don't know.
- 22:33Could we talk to you for a few minutes, Missus Habercham, I don't
- 22:37know anything about my husband, decays it'll only take a few minutes, alright,
- 22:41thank you? Oh what is it, chief, Missus Havericamp. Does
- 22:53the name Jean Bellamy mean anything to you? Yes? Could you tell us
- 22:59what you know about her? I know she was murdered about ten days ago?
- 23:03Not all you know? Yes? You sure? Missus who said you
- 23:06wanted to talk to my husband? Why are you asking me all these questions?
- 23:08Did you know your husband and Jean Bellamy were friends? Yes, you
- 23:14knew he'd been seeing a lot of her the past year. Yes, what'd
- 23:17you think about that? I didn't mind. Did you do anything about her?
- 23:22No? You sure? We've got no right to ask me questions about
- 23:26girl's been murdered? Missus Everca, I had nothing to do with it.
- 23:29Did your husband, Missus Hericam, he killed her? Didn't he? Yes?
- 23:51Did he tell you not? At first? How'd you find out Jean
- 23:59Bellamy's address book? Yes? It was on the garage floor the next morning,
- 24:07must have fallen out of the car, whot em knowing you mailed it
- 24:10into us. She'd been killed. Somebody was guilty, somebody had to pay.
- 24:18Why did he kill her? Missus happecam. She deserved to die.
- 24:23She had no right to do to him what she did. She can't your
- 24:30husband, No, that must be my daughter. She's had a party tonight,
- 24:33she said she'd call nay. I I'm sure hello, yes, death,
- 24:40dear. Are you having a good time? Oh that's wonderful to you.
- 24:45You go ahead and enjoy yourself. Just try not to get back too
- 24:48late. Oh, yes, dear, we're all right, just sitting around
- 24:52reading. Of course. Of course I'll give daddy a big kid for you.
- 24:57Goodbye there. That's one of the reasons Jeane Tellamy deserved to die,
- 25:04our children, breaking up my husband's life and mine and our children. He
- 25:14was a wonderful man, a wonderful husband and father before he met her.
- 25:21Why did kill her? He'd given her up once. I had thought he
- 25:26was all over it. Then a week before it happened, he told me
- 25:33he couldn't fight it any longer. She was driving him out of his mind.
- 25:36He was going back to her and what happened. Then he told me
- 25:41about it this afternoon, how he'd met her that night, and then she
- 25:47told him it was all off. She was going to marry somebody else.
- 25:51She laughed at him. I'll never forget his face as he told me about
- 25:56her, laughing at him as he went a little crazy. You have to
- 26:02beat it. Where's your husband now? Up back in the garage? What's
- 26:08he doing there? We decided that would be best for the children. Look
- 26:15like an accident. He's been there almost fifteen minutes. Come on, be
- 26:22must be a back door in the kitchen. Yeah, there it is,
- 26:30But that's how I got Oh, here he is hair. Let's get him.

- 29:52no advance in price, Damn Couverly speaking, this is the CBS Radio Network
- 30:14Welcome Back. There are a couple of things that stand out to me about
- 30:18this episode. First, I think versus modern stories is the idea of telling
- 30:29a story like this but without any sort of exploitativeness or and it's definitely a
- 30:38contrast between today's crime dramas, which often can almost seem to revel in this
- 30:47sort of thing. I think that both the murderer and his wife were in
- 30:52quite a state based on what we heard in this episode, where they really
- 30:56weren't thinking rationally. Either that or the writers made a mistake, but I'd
- 31:00like to think they're just showing the state of emotional distress they're in, particularly
- 31:07with the suicide towards the end, or suicide attempt, hoping that would remain
- 31:14considered an accident. That was a bit bit much to hope, given that
- 31:22the police suspected him of murder and his wife had just filed for divorce.
- 31:29Yeah, they're not going to think accident in that case, and I think
- 31:32particularly the time of day they portrayed. But I think it's somewhat understandable just
- 31:37because of the duress that they were under in what this meant and really just
- 31:44a lot of conflicting actions here. The sponsorship was interesting in that radio to
- 31:51reached the point in nineteen fifty two when companies could really buy a single goal,
- 32:00a single episode just to promote that, and then the series would go
- 32:07back to sustain and the little skit for Plymouth in the middle, I think
- 32:12was kind of cute. All right, Well, that will do it for
- 32:15today. We'll be back on Monday with another Johnny Dollar cereal, and then
