- 0:49Hello and welcome back this. Is the more carbs?
- 0:51Podcast, it's Jenna here with Riley.
- 0:53Hello and welcome back to the More Carbs podcast.
- 0:55It's Jenna here with Riley. Thanks for tuning in to another
- 0:58episode. Today we're going to be talking
- 0:59about what to do if you suspect that you have Reds.
- 1:03If you listen to episode 104, you might be suspicious that you
- 1:07might be going through Reds right now, and we're going to
- 1:09chat a little bit about next steps and what we recommend that
- 1:12you do if you suspect that you have Reds.
- 1:14Before we get into all of that good stuff, we are going to do
- 1:16our high and low. So sharing just a little bit
- 1:18about our week, the good, maybe the parts we wish had gone a
- 1:20little bit differently. And then we will wrap up this
- 1:22episode with our training update.
- 1:24If you didn't know, I'm going to be running a marathon very soon
- 1:26here, which is kind of wild. And then Riley is going to be
- 1:29sharing a little bit about her journey to running New York
- 1:31Marathon in 2025 and what other races she has planned for her
- 1:35kind of training progression along the way.
- 1:37So before we get into it though, Riley high and low update me
- 1:40what's going on this week feel like it's.
- 1:42Pretty normal, nothing super exciting to report, but my high
- 1:45and my low actually have to do both with my recent trip to
- 1:48Costco because because I feel like Costco is like a high and a
- 1:52low at all in itself, right? You go and you're either gonna
- 1:55buy, I feel like everything or you're gonna leave with only a
- 1:58couple of things. Like it's just not hitting that
- 2:00day. And my low is they unfortunately
- 2:03got rid of one of the products I love.
- 2:05I'm hoping it's just like a demand type thing.
- 2:07But you know, when you like, find something at Costco that
- 2:09you love and then it goes away. OK.
- 2:12What was it they? Stopped selling fruit riot at my
- 2:15Costco. Oh my gosh, I hope that doesn't
- 2:17happen to my Costco because I found it there for the first
- 2:20time. I don't know what your favorite
- 2:22flavor is but I love the mixed Berry grapes.
- 2:25Like the grapes that have lots of different flavors in the
- 2:27package and that is the product that they stocked at our Costco.
- 2:31I was getting so used to being able to like pick up a bag every
- 2:34single week and I know this is such a first world problem but
- 2:36I'm so sad. No, but it's real though,
- 2:38especially because you're like used to doing that and it's such
- 2:41a great deal through Costco because you go to another place
- 2:43to pick up a bag of fruit, right?
- 2:45And it's pricey. It's not the most inexpensive
- 2:47food item to buy out there right now and buying it at Costco is a
- 2:50really cost efficient way to like include that in your
- 2:52fueling. I know, and it's getting warmer,
- 2:55so it's like a frozen sweet treat and I'm just kind of
- 2:58bummed. But hopefully they bring it
- 2:59back. So if you are, you know,
- 3:01listening Fruit Riot, we love you.
- 3:02Please come back to Costco. Please, we need it in Costco.
- 3:06The good news is though is I actually found something that I
- 3:09really struggle with finding at Costco.
- 3:11I don't do really well with like the clothes at Costco.
- 3:14I usually get like char some clothes at Costco, but it never
- 3:17really like works out and I always wanted to workout because
- 3:20you and I have talked about this before.
- 3:21But like we love a good deal, love a good deal.
- 3:24I actually found running tights at Costco.
- 3:26No way I'm. Shocked.
- 3:28They have compression. They also have a tie at the top
- 3:30so they don't fall down. They were $15 and they have
- 3:34pockets. And like, I, I know, I know at
- 3:37first I was like, there's no way that these are going to be good.
- 3:40And I honestly might go back and buy like two or three more
- 3:42pairs. I honestly was thinking about
- 3:44like I should get a pair and like put in my closet like for
- 3:47New York. That's how much you love them.
- 3:49I love. And they're.
- 3:50A pant. They're a race day pant because
- 3:52like with New York, I'm gonna be super limited on what I can
- 3:54carry, but they have a really good pocket situation.
- 3:57So like that can help with like keeping my gels and my fuel.
- 4:00There deep pockets are the most underrated aspect of running
- 4:03clothing. I'm telling you like I'm
- 4:06shocked. Hopefully they don't like wear
- 4:08out overtime. I'll have to give an update on
- 4:10them but I was shocked because I usually like will give an arm
- 4:13and a leg for a good running tight and I'm I'm shocked at the
- 4:16quality. OK, do you know who makes them?
- 4:18You're gonna probably like, but don't judge me.
- 4:20But Spider, have you heard that company?
- 4:22OK. That's like the brand that I
- 4:24kind of associate with almost like under ski gear, is that
- 4:28right? Yeah, they usually have like
- 4:30gloves and like they do like the headbands and stuff, and they
- 4:33actually have like pretty good workout clothing.
- 4:35Wow. And you can find them at a great
- 4:37deal at Costco. I'm shocked because the clothes
- 4:39at Costco don't usually fit me. I'm very excited.
- 4:41And also this is how exciting Winston Salem is because, you
- 4:44know, I got excited about these pants.
- 4:46So please tell me you're weak. You're high and low.
- 4:49A little bit more exciting than my trip to Costco.
- 4:52You know, I don't know if they are that exciting, but it's
- 4:56always a good thing when you find something good at Costco.
- 4:58So like to me, that's a, that's a huge thing no matter where you
- 5:00live. My high is actually like by
- 5:02proxy. My family had one dog growing up
- 5:05all of my life pretty much. And this dog was my mom's
- 5:08shadow. We lost that dog a couple of
- 5:10years ago and my mom had a really hard time kind of
- 5:12adjusting to life without her dog.
- 5:14And we were really encouraging my mom to get a new dog and she
- 5:17finally got a new dog and it's like the perfect fit and the
- 5:20perfect match for my mom. I hi is just that like seeing my
- 5:23mom so happy these past couple of days since she got her new
- 5:26dog and just knowing that this dog is like the perfect fit for
- 5:28her and my dad right now in life is just, it's just a wonderful
- 5:31thing. Whatever dog is it.
- 5:33The rescue dog, they think he's part corgi, but they're not sure
- 5:36because he's a little bit of a mix of everything.
- 5:39He's a very cute dog though. He's very mellow, very mild,
- 5:43just a perfect fit for my parents.
- 5:45I had a corgi growing up and they're such great dogs.
- 5:48They're so cute. It's I don't know if it's like
- 5:50the leg to body ratio that just gets me.
- 5:53They're just so cute. But those dogs are the best.
- 5:56They really are. It's really sweet.
- 5:58My low. This is so silly.
- 6:00When I was traveling in California I decided that when
- 6:05in Rome you have to go to Erawan and get a smoothie.
- 6:08So I did it and I was so let down by buy the smoothies at Air
- 6:121. I did not think it was that
- 6:14good. So my goal now is to take the
- 6:17flavors or take the ideas behind the Air 1 smoothies.
- 6:21My goal is to make better smoothies than Air One because I
- 6:23was disappointed. I have so many questions.
- 6:26First off, what smoothie did you get and was it $20?
- 6:29It was $20, yes. I got like, I think it was like
- 6:32Malibu something or other because it was a tropical based
- 6:35one. It had like pineapple and mango
- 6:37in it. I specifically looked through
- 6:39the ingredients because I know that some of them, they put
- 6:42ingredients that don't sit well in my stomach like artificial
- 6:44sweeteners. So I looked for something that
- 6:46didn't, which is why I picked the one that I did.
- 6:48But I was with a group of friends and one of them got the
- 6:50new one that's like $23. Just really interesting that
- 6:54they can get away with selling smoothies that are kind of like
- 6:57mid range in my opinion, for as much as they do.
- 6:59I know that they do advertise that part of them go to charity,
- 7:02but they don't really advertise how much of that profit goes to
- 7:05charity. So just really interesting that
- 7:08that was my experience. I was really let down and I
- 7:10think maybe that was because like I've had such good
- 7:12smoothies in California in the past.
- 7:13I know that we've talked about this before and the smoothies
- 7:16that you and I had and you're going to have to remind me of
- 7:17the name of the business that we've been to together to get
- 7:20smoothies. And I was almost expecting
- 7:21something of that caliber where I was like, I'm going to
- 7:23remember how good this is. And I don't like, I just like
- 7:26didn't have that same like wow, this is really good.
- 7:28I was just like, all right, it's a smoothie.
- 7:29Active cultures. There it is.
- 7:31Yes. Now they I will pay $20.00 for a
- 7:34smoothie. Yes, I would also pay $20.00 for
- 7:37a smoothie. I am so intrigued.
- 7:39Like I'm so intrigued by your experience though, because
- 7:42they're all over social media. I know, I think it's really like
- 7:45a thing of being able to go into an establishment and pay $20.00
- 7:48for a smoothie and like the line to get them was so long.
- 7:52So I do think it's kind of like a social craze of being like,
- 7:55look here, I went to AIR 1 and yes, it is a fun experience to
- 7:58just go in and do that and try it.
- 8:00But like, we were not the only people in that grocery store
- 8:02that was there specifically for the smoothies and.
- 8:05They've done such a good job of like partnering with
- 8:07influencers. That's what they have going on
- 8:09right now. I know it's that yellow
- 8:10smoothie. I don't know exactly who they
- 8:12partnered with, but it is so interesting the power of
- 8:15marketing. Yes, which kind of all like ties
- 8:18back to a lot of the things that we talk about on this podcast
- 8:20about, you know, our what drives us bananas episodes about the
- 8:22power of influencing and marketing.
- 8:24And but yeah, it was just really interesting and I was really
- 8:26disappointed with this movie. Thank you so much for sharing
- 8:29that. I'm very intrigued.
- 8:30I'm gonna have to keep like doing some more research on this
- 8:32airborne smoothie situation. I feel like it's something that
- 8:34you kind of have to do, but I feel like after I did it, I'm
- 8:37like I never need to do that again.
- 8:38I never need to spend another $20 there on this, at least on
- 8:41smoothies and definitely on their single serve strawberry.
- 8:43It's like. The Santa Monica Pier, you like
- 8:45have to do it when you're in California.
- 8:47You've done it once. You're like, I never need to do
- 8:48that ever again. Yes, 100%.
- 8:52Today we're actually talking a little bit about Reds though,
- 8:54and what to do if you do suspect that you have Reds.
- 8:56Just as a reminder about what Reds is, Reg stands for relative
- 9:00energy deficiency in sport. It's a condition that occurs
- 9:04when an athlete does not consume enough energy to support their
- 9:07energy demands of their body, especially in the context of
- 9:09training, competition and just general well-being.
- 9:12Reds can affect both men and women, and that recognizes that
- 9:16that energy deficiency impacts the body in various ways,
- 9:18including hormonal, metabolic and cardiovascular symptoms.
- 9:22As far as the signs that you might experience, if you do have
- 9:24Reds, Riley, can you kind of like walk through what those
- 9:26might look like? Yes, definitely.
- 9:28So I think what can be really challenging with Reds is you're
- 9:31not always going to display all of these symptoms.
- 9:34Reds is a collection of different symptoms.
- 9:36And again, like I just mentioned, you might not display
- 9:39with all of these, but when we look at Reds, common symptoms
- 9:42are going to be a lack of a menstrual cycle or a normal
- 9:45period, low energy in and out of sport.
- 9:48I think that's something really important to remember that
- 9:51you're not just going to have low energy when you're
- 9:52competing, but you're also just going to have low energy
- 9:54throughout the day when you're in class, when you're working.
- 9:57You're going to have potentially abnormal cardiovascular labs,
- 10:01and there's also some potential for glucose insensitivity.
- 10:04You're going to have an increased risk for illness like
- 10:07I mentioned earlier, low energy, but just overall poor cognitive
- 10:11function that can result in you having trouble focusing in class
- 10:15or when you're at work, or bone health.
- 10:17This is going to be apparent on a DEXA, but this is kind of like
- 10:20a silent symptom and most athletes don't realize this is
- 10:23happening until they end up with a stress fracture or another
- 10:27type of injury. Additionally, Reds can result in
- 10:30an inability to put on muscle mass and then just an overall
- 10:33decreased recovering ability. Even when we work with athletes
- 10:37at RBSN in period recovery, we always recommend that they talk
- 10:40with their physician first. So if you are experiencing some
- 10:42of these symptoms that Riley has just explained and you plan on
- 10:45meeting with your physician to talk about Reds, we've kind of
- 10:48compiled some questions to ask your physician or your care
- 10:51team. Physicians are incredible
- 10:52resources. We do need to advocate for
- 10:54ourselves, especially when it comes to our own health.
- 10:56If you suspect that you have Reds, it's important to talk to
- 10:59your medical team about it and don't hesitate to ask specific
- 11:02questions about it to better understand what's going on with
- 11:05your health. Being proactive in your health
- 11:06care can help ensure that you receive the right support and
- 11:08guidance when you are concerned if you do have Reds.
- 11:11So we've compiled our five top questions to talk with your
- 11:14physician about the next time that you see them.
- 11:16And we go into depth on these questions more in our period
- 11:18recovery guide when you are talking with your care team.
- 11:21But we're just going to go over the five that we have kind of
- 11:23compiled today. So our first one when you are
- 11:25talking with your physician, we recommend asking is could my
- 11:28symptoms be related to Reds and what tests can we check for?
- 11:31So, Riley, what tests might a physician suggest testing for if
- 11:35Reds is suspected? Oftentimes we're going to be
- 11:37looking at your lab work first. So looking at estrogen levels,
- 11:41looking at thyroid, looking at iron levels.
- 11:44Those are often three things that we recommend and we have
- 11:47all of our athletes test for in our period recovery program.
- 11:50The other one that might be talked about or suggested by
- 11:53your physician is a DEXA scan. Riley, what's a DEXA scan?
- 11:56A DEXA. Scan is technically not a lab
- 11:57test, but it is a test that we can do to check your body
- 12:01composition, but more importantly, we can use to
- 12:04measure your bone density. This is going to be something
- 12:07that's not regularly offered at a physician's office, so you are
- 12:11going to have to ask oftentimes for a referral and often
- 12:14physicians will suggest doing a DEXA test if you have potential
- 12:18to have Reds. So really this first question of
- 12:21could my symptoms be related to Reds and what tests would we be
- 12:23looking at? We're looking at both blood work
- 12:25and we're looking at bone density.
- 12:27Yes, and another almost like vital sign that we want to be
- 12:30looking for. It's not a lab test, but you
- 12:32know when you go to the doctor, they are asking you questions.
- 12:34They are looking at vital signs is a regular menstrual cycle.
- 12:38So a big misconception I think with Reds is that you have to
- 12:42have lost your period to have Reds and many athletes can be in
- 12:47a state of low energy availability but still heavy
- 12:50normal menstrual cycle. Such a good one to also talk
- 12:53about with your physician, especially if you are concerned
- 12:55about Reds. The next question that we would
- 12:57recommend asking is how does Reds affect my long term health
- 13:00including bone health, hormone levels and performance?
- 13:03What should we be looking for from our physician's response,
- 13:05Riley, if we are kind of wondering about these things
- 13:08hopefully? They're saying yes because
- 13:09that's true, right? With Reds, it is going to
- 13:13directly impact our short term and our long term health.
- 13:17And I think that's something that we're doing a much better
- 13:19job of talking about now versus like maybe when I was an
- 13:22athlete, we're not talking about the long term effects of Reds.
- 13:26And we were almost kind of like downplaying some of these side
- 13:29effects and symptoms because yes, we might not have a stress
- 13:33fracture now, but a poor bone mineral density is setting us up
- 13:37for failure like once we hit menopause and once we get.
- 13:40Older, these next three questions are kind of geared
- 13:43more towards if there is suspicion or diagnosis of Reds
- 13:46questions that we can kind of follow up with our physicians.
- 13:48So that next question is how can we continue to track my progress
- 13:53in recovery? I love this question because
- 13:56Reds is something that didn't happen overnight and we're not
- 13:59going to solve it overnight. What is the care plan moving
- 14:02forward? How are we going to track
- 14:04athlete progress? How are we going to make sure
- 14:07that we're getting consistent Dexas, consistent lab work to
- 14:10make sure what we're doing is working?
- 14:12I have heard from so many athletes and we get so many
- 14:16applications or a period recovery program with athletes
- 14:19who've shared that they haven't had their period for like 2 plus
- 14:22years. And honestly, for me, this is
- 14:24unacceptable because we need to be, you know, monitoring this
- 14:29and making changes to help these athletes, like get their period
- 14:32back and make sure that there's sustainable change and lifestyle
- 14:35intervention. So important to attract that
- 14:37progress towards recovery. The next question would
- 14:40recommend asking is are there other professionals that you
- 14:42recommend that I meet with? Do you have a referral for a
- 14:45sports dietitian to help me with fueling strategies?
- 14:47Obviously, we put in sports dietitian because that's the one
- 14:49we are most familiar with, but your physician might also
- 14:52encourage you to meet with psychology if there is concern
- 14:54for disordered eating. They might encourage you to work
- 14:56with physical therapy if you are recovering from an injury.
- 14:59There's a multitude of professionals that your
- 15:01physician might want to loop in on your recovery process that
- 15:04are extremely important to include in your recovery
- 15:05journey. If there is a suspected eating
- 15:08disorder with Reds or you feel like you might have an eating
- 15:11disorder and eating disorder, dietitian should also be
- 15:14included in the interdisciplinary team.
- 15:16That question kind of goes on to our fifth question or ties into
- 15:19our fifth question, I should say, which is if I'm struggling
- 15:22mentally with eating and training, what resources are
- 15:25available for support? So really letting your physician
- 15:27know that you are struggling and then also asking about the
- 15:30resources that are available. We've had previous episodes in
- 15:33which we've talked with care team members that are physicians
- 15:36and dietitians and sports centers that are geared towards
- 15:38Reds. And if you're in an area where
- 15:40resources like that exist for you, your physician will be able
- 15:43to point you in that direction so that way you can receive the
- 15:45care that's proper to the diagnosis that you.
- 15:47Have well make sure to link the episodes below so if you are in
- 15:51certain areas throughout the United States, you'll be able to
- 15:53connect with those providers. A bonus question that we might
- 15:56include in talking with your physician about would be if your
- 15:59physician recommends birth control, a good response to
- 16:02that. I've read that birth control
- 16:03doesn't actually fix the underlying issue of Reds.
- 16:06Can we focus on finding the root cause and addressing my energy
- 16:09availability instead? If this is something that's
- 16:11suggested by your physician and you don't feel comfortable with
- 16:14this treatment plan, make sure that you let them know.
- 16:16I think it is. A quick reminder to you that
- 16:18there's nothing wrong with birth control.
- 16:20It's a very important resource and valuable resource for
- 16:23Women's Health. I think the biggest
- 16:25misconception with birth control is that it's going to give you a
- 16:28real period and it can solve low energy availability.
- 16:31If you're an athlete that has Reds, if you have HA, if you
- 16:34have low energy availability going on the birth control pill
- 16:38is not going to stimulate a real period.
- 16:41It's not solving the underlying cause and the root issue, it's
- 16:45almost band aiding the problem. So this is just something that
- 16:48is really important to remember with the birth control pill.
- 16:51Lastly, if your doctor doesn't seem familiar with Reds, you can
- 16:54mention that it's a condition recognized by the International
- 16:56Olympic Committee and effects many athletes.
- 16:59Jenna and I are always available to connect with you if you have
- 17:02questions about how you should be chatting with your physician
- 17:05about a potential Reds diagnosis.
- 17:07Within our period Recovery guide, we expand upon these
- 17:09questions so that way you feel better equipped to walk your
- 17:12next appointment with your care team if you do suspect Reds.
- 17:15Just as a reminder, Reds is a medical condition, and Riley and
- 17:18I's first recommendation is always to go and chat with your
- 17:20medical team and your physician about this first.
- 17:23Now that we've talked a lot about Reds and about what to do
- 17:25if you suspect that you do have Reds and questions that you
- 17:27should be asking your care team, we're going to be doing our
- 17:29training update. Like I mentioned at the
- 17:30beginning of this episode, I'm running a marathon in just a
- 17:33couple of weeks now, which is crazy that it's coming up so
- 17:35quickly and Riley's going to be sharing about her next steps in
- 17:37her progress to running New York in 2025.
- 17:40S Riley, what's training like for you this week?
- 17:43What are you kind of implementing for?
- 17:44Like your races leading up to your big marathon?
- 17:46So I shared a couple episodes ago that I'm currently in like
- 17:49phase two. I've just completely made it up,
- 17:52but I'm in phase two of my training right now where my goal
- 17:54is to try to increase speed over the last couple months.
- 17:57Prior to this, I was working on just kind of increasing my
- 18:00mileage, getting my body used to running, you know, 20 to 30
- 18:03miles per week. And now I've been really
- 18:05adjusting my plan to get faster. Like I've shared, I'm also
- 18:09deciding to try out Runna for my half marathon that I have
- 18:13planned at the end of June. It is a lot of speed work.
- 18:16I have heard mixed opinions on it, but I actually really do
- 18:19like speed work. I think it makes me a little
- 18:21nostalgic because a lot of the workouts are similar to workouts
- 18:24I was doing in college athletics, which I don't know if
- 18:26that's a good thing or a bad thing.
- 18:28So I really enjoyed, you know, doing 2 speed days a week.
- 18:31I have like an easy recovery run and then I have my longer one on
- 18:35the weekend. So pretty standard, but just
- 18:37trying to get a little bit faster over here.
- 18:38We can't wait to watch you kind of go through this progression
- 18:41and watch to run your marathon in the end of the year.
- 18:44Almost. What half marathon are you
- 18:46planning to run? I'm just.
- 18:47Going to be doing like a local half marathon.
- 18:49I'm hoping to have two half or at least race 2 halves before my
- 18:55November 2nd full marathon. I was debating like if I wanted
- 18:58to do like try to fit in another full before New York, but I
- 19:03don't want to get hurt. That's actually my number one
- 19:05goal is like I don't want to get hurt.
- 19:06So even before getting faster, like I don't want to get hurt.
- 19:10And I was just worried because, you know, work is going to be my
- 19:12first marathon. I just didn't want to know put
- 19:14that load on my body. Totally.
- 19:16I'm so excited for you. Thank you.
- 19:18I'm excited for you. It's like a couple weeks.
- 19:20I know, which is crazy. I feel like my training kind of
- 19:23took a little bit of a turn because I was a little bit sick.
- 19:26I shared on a previous episode that I got sick and I needed to
- 19:29kind of take a little bit of a step back from training.
- 19:31So I'm just kind of working my way back into things this week,
- 19:33making sure that I am healthy in my return to running before I
- 19:36kind of jump back in and get into a full swing.
- 19:38So excited. For you, not that you were sick,
- 19:40but just so excited. It's like basically a month
- 19:43away, yeah. It is, which is wild, absolutely
- 19:46wild. So just a few more long runs.
- 19:47I think one of the best things about marathon training is, you
- 19:50know, it's almost as rewarding to finish your last long
- 19:53training run before you run your marathon because like, you don't
- 19:56have to do that again and the next big run is your race.
- 19:58So I love that feeling and I'm almost looking forward to that
- 20:01more than I am the actual race. Well, I'm so excited because I
- 20:04know your race starts at 5:30, but it will be 830 over here so
- 20:08I can follow you along and cheer you on.
- 20:11So I'm, I'm really excited at least to kind of like spectate
- 20:13and cheer you on. Yes, of the few people that will
