- 0:25Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:30Amen. Amen.
- 0:31Well, Merry Christmas, everyone. Merry Christmas.
- 0:34We're so encouraged to have you to worship Jesus with you.
- 0:38We want to welcome you on behalf of the church.
- 0:41I know the holidays are a lot of fun, a lot of festivities, a lot
- 0:45of happiness, but I also want to acknowledge, I realized that
- 0:49Christmas is not always happy or joyous for everyone.
- 0:53You know, you're learning in life that life, the more you,
- 0:56you know, the farther you get along in life, the more years
- 0:59that are on your odometer. I guess you learned that so much
- 1:02in life is bittersweet. And I realized that some of you
- 1:06around the holidays, this is the first time that you've ever
- 1:08experienced a major holiday without someone that you love or
- 1:12you experience some real deep tragedy or challenge this year.
- 1:17I'm sorry. It's one of those things where
- 1:20you're learning how to rejoice with those who rejoice.
- 1:23And then there's just those times, aren't there, where we
- 1:26get that. We get these seasons in life
- 1:28where we can be excited and we can be happy and we can enjoy
- 1:31them. But there's other seasons in
- 1:32life where we just have to learn to endure them and to press on
- 1:38and to take the next step or to get out of bed and to get ready
- 1:42for the day and just press on for what is ahead of you.
- 1:45And so whatever stage you're in, I want to acknowledge that it's
- 1:48my prayer that you're you would draw close to the Lord that
- 1:52he'll get us through like you'll make it through every year he
- 1:55has this year, he'll do it again.
- 1:58He'll be faithful to meet you and whatever you're going
- 2:00through. And ultimately, it's really good
- 2:02to be together. It's good to be together near
- 2:05and far celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and remembering how
- 2:10important his birth really is. Like the significant, the life
- 2:14altering, life changing moment of the birth of Jesus Christ,
- 2:18the eternal Son of God. Today I want to give you 4
- 2:22reasons why Jesus was born. Now these aren't 4 exhaustive.
- 2:27I mean if I guess if we were doing a list we could come up
- 2:30with 100 plus reasons in the Bible.
- 2:33But these four I think are very important and relevant for us
- 2:36today as we look to celebrating Christmas, why Jesus was born
- 2:40and how important it is for you and I to realize, you know,
- 2:43Gods, We're talking about gifts and giving of gifts, receiving
- 2:47of gifts around Christmas. You just remember God's greatest
- 2:51gift to man has a name, and his name is Jesus.
- 2:55His name is Jesus. The Bible tells us that He is
- 2:58the Word became human and made his home among us.
- 3:03Now you may have memorized that in an older version of the
- 3:05Bible, where the Bible says that God, he became flesh and dwelt
- 3:10among us. The Word became flesh and dwelt
- 3:13among us. A more modern version says that
- 3:15he made his home among us. I love that.
- 3:18He was full of unfailing love, the Bible says, and
- 3:21faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the
- 3:24glory of the Father's one and only Son.
- 3:28Let's consider four things. 4 reasons why Jesus was born #1
- 3:33Jesus was born to keep a promise.
- 3:36Jesus was born to keep a promise.
- 3:39It's very encouraging today that to know and be reminded that God
- 3:44keeps his promises. Can I get Amen on that?
- 3:47Many, many, many, many times throughout the Old Testament of
- 3:52the Bible, God promised the nation of Israel that He would
- 3:56send a savior even before the nation of Israel was mentioned
- 4:02in the Bible. In the book of Genesis, God
- 4:05speaks of sending a savior into the world.
- 4:09One of the passages in the Bible that speaks of a promise of a
- 4:12savior is in Isaiah Chapter 7 in verse 13.
- 4:16Actually in verse 14 it says, all right then the Lord himself
- 4:22will give you a sign. Look, the virgin will conceive a
- 4:26child. She will give birth to a son and
- 4:30will call his name Emmanuel, which means God with us.
- 4:36The promise of a Savior is all throughout the Bible.
- 4:40Another time in the Bible, in Isaiah chapter 53, the Bible
- 4:43speaks of the Savior coming. He says, Who has believed our
- 4:46message? To whom has the Lord revealed
- 4:49his powerful arm? My servant?
- 4:52This is Speaking of the promised Savior.
- 4:55My servant grew up in the Lord's presence.
- 4:58Like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground.
- 5:03There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance,
- 5:07nothing to attract us to Him. He was despised and rejected, A
- 5:11man of sorrows acquainted with deepest grief.
- 5:15We turned our backs on him and look the other way.
- 5:18He was despised and we didn't care.
- 5:21Yet it was our weakness He carried.
- 5:24It was our sorrows that weighed Him down, and we thought his
- 5:27troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own
- 5:31sins. They were for ours.
- 5:34You can trust God, your creator. He's the promise keeper.
- 5:38There's so much emphasis today in US making promises to God.
- 5:41Maybe you've made, it's the holiday season.
- 5:43You got Christmas now and you got New Year's coming up.
- 5:45Maybe you've made this big promise.
- 5:47You know what, God, if you, then I will.
- 5:49And you know God, this year's going to be different.
- 5:51And you know, God, I look back and I know I need to make some
- 5:54changes. And you've made this big promise
- 5:56to God to which I commend anytime you look to God and you
- 6:00want to make changes that, that, that is amazing.
- 6:02But I want you to know this greater than any promise you can
- 6:05make to God is God, the promise giver and the promise keeper.
- 6:11He keeps his promises. He works on our behalf.
- 6:15Jesus arrived on the scene just at the right time, again, the
- 6:20Bible says. But when the right time came,
- 6:25God sent his Son, born of a woman, the right time.
- 6:31Jesus was born to keep a promise and remind us every Christmas
- 6:34that God keeps his promises #2 Jesus was born to reveal God to
- 6:40us. You know, we would never know
- 6:41God. No one ever would know God
- 6:44unless He chose to tell us about himself.
- 6:47God reveals Himself to us and the greatest revelation of God
- 6:51the Father is through God the Son.
- 6:54There were so many ideas surrounding God in the 1st
- 6:56century, even as there's so many ideas that related to God today,
- 7:01so many fanciful thoughts and philosophies of men.
- 7:05And well, I think God is this and I don't really believe in
- 7:07God. And God is a fairy tale and a
- 7:10myth. And I'm sure some of you have
- 7:11met someone where they look at you and they just kind of laugh
- 7:14at you and go, you believe in that, You believe in the Bible.
- 7:17What a joke, what a fairy tale. Well, what's true now was true
- 7:21in the 1st century. They were saying the same thing.
- 7:24They were doing the same things, creating man made religions, man
- 7:27made philosophies to fill the gap of the emptiness that you
- 7:32feel apart from Christ. But listen, the true story of
- 7:35Christmas is Jesus coming to set the record straight.
- 7:40He reveals who God is. He's the one that shows us.
- 7:44The Bible says no one has ever seen God.
- 7:48But the unique one, Speaking of Jesus, who is himself, God is
- 7:53near to the Father's heart. He has revealed God to us.
- 7:59He's Emmanuel, God with us. He's the one that became human
- 8:06and made his home among us. The message of Christmas is that
- 8:10Jesus loves you and he wants you to know God.
- 8:13He would even say this. He would say to one of his
- 8:16followers very closely say if you've seen me, you've seen the
- 8:19Father. The clarity of who God is is
- 8:22revealed in the Son, the eternal Son of God who became a man, a
- 8:27human like you and me. Not only that #3 Jesus was born
- 8:32to show you real love. And aren't there a lot of
- 8:36opinions of what love is today? And you know, romantic love,
- 8:39syrupy love, Hallmark Channel love, whatever that is.
- 8:44And just everybody has an idea of what love is.
- 8:46They use the word so loosely. I mean, you and I, we both kind
- 8:49of use it. You know, we'll say I love you
- 8:51and I'll tell you to Marie, my wife, I love you, honey.
- 8:53And at the same time I go, I love ice cream.
- 8:56I mean, do I mean the same thing?
- 8:58I hope not. I hope I love her more than I do
- 9:01ice cream, which I do. But there's so many ideas of
- 9:04what love is. Jesus came to show you what
- 9:07real, true, self sacrificial Love Is All about.
- 9:11A servant's heart, a servant's heart to the point of
- 9:14sacrificing himself on your behalf.
- 9:17Because that little baby, he grew up.
- 9:20He grew up to be a man. For the last three years of his
- 9:23life, Jesus spent that time loving, caring, teaching,
- 9:27serving, healing, to which he was rewarded with the worst kind
- 9:32of torturous death a person could experience as he was
- 9:36nailed to a Roman cross, dying an innocent man.
- 9:43You know, today we'll see these phrases, and you're probably
- 9:46familiar with it. You might even used it.
- 9:48You might have it as a bumper sticker or something on your
- 9:50desk at work. But you'll say something like
- 9:53this. Jesus is the reason for the
- 9:56season, and that's a great little saying, especially in the
- 9:59secular world that we live in. It really points people back in
- 10:03a simple way and a non offensive way to some degree, that the
- 10:07real reason we celebrate Christmas is not all the other
- 10:10trappings, but Jesus himself is the reason for the season.
- 10:14It's a good reminder that when we celebrate holidays that
- 10:17they're really holy days they set apart to honor God.
- 10:22However, let me give you another thought just to chew on.
- 10:25Whenever you see that that bumper sticker or that saying
- 10:28Jesus is the reason, let me just give you something to think
- 10:30about. Let's consider this, that you
- 10:34are the reason for the season. Like, Oh yeah, you and I, we're
- 10:39the reason for the seasons. And you say, well, wait a
- 10:41minute, Ed, why would you say that?
- 10:43We see that you're the reason Jesus came.
- 10:47You're the reason why he was born.
- 10:49You're the reason why he died and rose again.
- 10:54And so in a very real way, the life, death and resurrection of
- 10:58Jesus was for you and me. And not in a narcissistic way
- 11:02where all the spotlight is on us, but rather God so loved the
- 11:07world that he gave his only begotten Son for you and for me.
- 11:16I love this passage in the Bible it says, and that you may know
- 11:21the power, that you may have the power to understand, as all
- 11:26God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep
- 11:32His love is. May you experience the love of
- 11:36Christ, though it's too great to fully understand.
- 11:40Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life
- 11:44and power that comes from God. The man that wrote this was
- 11:48writing to a church just like ours and he was saying, this is
- 11:52what I want for you. This is what I want you to
- 11:54experience that this would be if you spent your whole life
- 11:57plumbing the depths of the love of God and experiencing the love
- 12:01of God and understanding the love of God, you would have
- 12:04invested your life wisely. And then he gives these
- 12:07directions. He says, I want you to know how
- 12:09long God's love is. Well, how long is God's love?
- 12:12It lasts forever. That's how long forever and ever
- 12:17and ever. And he says, I want you to know
- 12:19how wide God's love is. Well, how wide is God's love?
- 12:22Well, you can't go anywhere that is love won't reach you.
- 12:26And then he says, how deep, how deep is God's love?
- 12:30Well, if you're in the deepest pit that you've ever
- 12:32experienced, God's love goes all the way down there.
- 12:38And listen, I know in a room this size, whether you're here
- 12:42or you're listening live on the radio right now or online
- 12:46somewhere, I know there are some deep pits among us.
- 12:50I understand it could have taken for you today every ounce of
- 12:54energy that you've had all year to build up to be here today.
- 13:00And what an honor to worship with you.
- 13:02I want an honor to host you. You're learning just how deep
- 13:06the love of God is. He also says, how high is God's
- 13:10love? Well, how high is it?
- 13:11Well, his love is so high that he can overlook all the bad
- 13:14choices, all the bad decisions, all the sinful mistakes and
- 13:18failure, failures that we've ever made and exchanged that
- 13:23with his eternal forgiveness. Jesus was born to reveal and
- 13:28show you real love. And finally, well, this is the
- 13:32most important, I believe Jesus was born to save your life.
- 13:38Or let me put it a little more closer to the issue, He came to
- 13:43save your soul, your soul. Jesus, that sweet little baby in
- 13:48the Manger, grew up to be a man. And it is life on a Roman cross.
- 13:53And Jesus can come into your life right now.
- 13:56Jesus was born to die, to rise again, and in this moment draw
- 14:03you to himself so that you might believe.
- 14:07That's why he was, That's why he was born.
- 14:09Maybe you're here today with the burden of sin or the guilt of
- 14:14all other sorts of behaviors and problems in a past that you're
- 14:17not proud of. Jesus is saying to you today.
- 14:20He's asking you, are you tired? Are you worn out?
- 14:23Are you burned out on religion? Come to me.
- 14:27It's kind of a bummer. I use that phrase burned out on
- 14:30religion, but a lot of people are, a lot of people have
- 14:33stopped short in their lives at the point of religion.
- 14:36It's the religion they were born into, the religion of their
- 14:39home, the popular religion of the day.
- 14:41But you have to understand something.
- 14:43Jesus calls you not to religion, but to himself, and it's very
- 14:48different. It's a very different thing.
- 14:50And I'm sorry you're burned out and bummed out on religion.
- 14:53That's not what we're about here.
- 14:54Maybe you thought you were coming to some religious thing
- 14:57today. I just want you to know we're
- 14:59not interested in some religious thing here today.
- 15:02We're not asking you to join a religion.
- 15:04What we want is a relationship with God.
- 15:07We want you to experience Jesus personally.
- 15:10That's really what a Christian is.
- 15:12A Christian is one who has given their life to Christ and they
- 15:16live their lives to please and honor him.
- 15:18So let me ask you today, are you a real child of God?
- 15:22Are you just a follower of a religion or perhaps you're not
- 15:25connected to God at all? Are you a real child of God?
- 15:27Let me use the words Jesus used. Are you born again?
- 15:32You think of the word born again or the phrase born again that is
- 15:35outside your ability. You cannot give yourself new
- 15:39life. You cannot give yourself new
- 15:42life physically and you certainly cannot give yourself
- 15:44life spiritually. Are you a child of God?
- 15:49Well, a lot of times I ask that question, it's a good question
- 15:51because it starts a conversation and sometimes people answer
- 15:55where you are. Well, of course I'm a Christian,
- 15:56I'm an American. I was born in the United States
- 16:00or I go to church or I was born in this religion.
- 16:03And let me say, I'm glad that you're an American.
- 16:05I'm glad you're any nationality and that you think you have a
- 16:08relationship with God because of that.
- 16:11But let me tell you, that doesn't get you into heaven,
- 16:15where you were born, what your nationality is, what religion
- 16:18you follow. The only thing that will give
- 16:21you eternal life is if you receive the gift that comes
- 16:26through faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible says that as many as
- 16:29received Jesus, he gave them the power to become sons and
- 16:34daughters of God. And you don't have to wait till
- 16:36tomorrow to receive this gift. We're here right now, you know,
- 16:39I know what, around this time, there's a lot of traditions.
- 16:42I grew up with traditions, my family grew up with traditions.
- 16:45And one of those traditions is the kids open nothing until
- 16:48Christmas morning. But that's not all.
- 16:52Not only did they open nothing until Christmas morning, but
- 16:55they have to wait until everybody's awake that we're all
- 17:00downstairs and that Maria's finished cooking breakfast and
- 17:05we've all finished breakfast and we've all cleaned up.
- 17:12And then you go and sit down and we will hand you your gifts one
- 17:19at a time. Very different than the home I
- 17:23grew up in where they just stacked them up and you just
- 17:25open them all on Christmas Eve. I know there are a lot of
- 17:28traditions and the giving of receiving of gifts, and it's all
- 17:31wonderful whatever you choose to do, but I'm telling you this,
- 17:35eternal life doesn't come two ways, three ways, five ways, or
- 17:39ten ways. It only comes one way.
- 17:41You must be born again. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
- 17:45today. Receive His gift of eternal
- 17:47life. You don't have to wait.
- 17:50You can unwrap it today and enjoy it.
- 17:53The gift of salvation is really, truly the only gift that keeps
- 17:56on giving. No batteries required, No
- 17:58assembly required. Jesus has paid the price and
- 18:01He's finished the work. Aren't you glad?
- 18:03You don't have to do anything to add to it.
- 18:05You don't need to put it together.
- 18:07It's all yours. All you need to do is reach out
- 18:11and receive it all. That's all that's needed and the
- 18:15reason that God's brought you here today near and far
- 18:18downstairs in the overflow or again right here in front of me,
- 18:21the reason he's brought you here today is to declare to you his
- 18:24great love for you. He keeps his promises.
- 18:27He does everything that he says he will do.
- 18:29And today he says if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus
- 18:33and you believe in your heart that God raised him from the
- 18:35dead, here's his promise. You ready?
- 18:37You shall be saved. That's the story of Christmas,
- 18:42friends. That's the reason for the
- 18:44season, the reality of the work, the finished work of the cross.
- 18:51We invite you to Him, not to religion, not to your
- 18:56nationality. This is so much greater and so
- 18:59much bigger. Jesus says, come unto me all you
- 19:03are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
- 19:06Come to Him today. So Father, thank you for the
- 19:08privilege of being together today and worshipping you.
- 19:12It's a great and glorious privilege to know you personally
- 19:16and to live for you with the entirety of our lives.
- 19:20I thank you God and just keeps ministering to me, these
- 19:23children that were on the stage today because it's such a great
- 19:26illustration what you say in your what you taught us, Jesus,
- 19:30you taught us that in order to follow you, we have to become
- 19:33like children. We don't become like, you know,
- 19:36acting like kids, but we have to have the heart of a kid to to
- 19:40follow you and trust you and to know that you're going to lead
- 19:44us and guide us in life. You said suffer the little
- 19:48children to come unto me. And so there's that need for us
- 19:51to come to you just as kids, just recognizing what you have
- 19:55and what you have done for us and what life you have for us.
- 20:01It isn't a religious activity. And I just pray for those that
- 20:09are right there in religion even now, that they would just come
- 20:12all the way. They're so close, so close to
- 20:15surrender, so close to commitment, so close to this age
- 20:20abiding life that comes, that freedom to worship God, to know
- 20:25you, to enjoy you, to serve you. It's so many are close today,
- 20:32God, and I pray for them. I pray God for all that you're
- 20:35touching and speaking to that they might receive you today.
- 20:41And even as the church is praying, I want to give you a
- 20:43chance today. If you're here and you say,
- 20:45pastor, I need and I want to follow God with my life, Would
- 20:50you just stand to your feet? I want to pray with you.
- 20:53We've been praying for you for so long and now here's the
- 20:55moment, the moment where the invitation comes and God is
- 20:58speaking to you, not a man and a pulpit, although my voice is
- 21:01being used. What you're sensing is God
- 21:04moving in your heart to commit your life to him.
- 21:08Would there be anyone here that say, Ed, I want to follow Jesus
- 21:12with my life? Would you just stand to your
- 21:13feet? I'd like to pray with you and
- 21:15for you. And then one of the pastors will
- 21:17come alongside of you and encourage you right where you're
- 21:20standing. It's a public invitation and a
- 21:23public response. God bless you to a public
- 21:26commitment in your life. The the beauty and the joy of
- 21:32serving God and receiving that gift.
- 21:36I love the language because it is the gift of salvation.
- 21:39It is a gift. You can't earn it.
- 21:42You can't do anything to deserve it.
- 21:45It's completely a gift of God through his Son.
- 21:48Is there anyone else? God bless you.
- 21:50I see you bless you over here. You guys back in the back.
- 21:54You know folks will catch up to you in a moment when somebody
- 21:58comes standing with you. That's part of our team.
- 22:01We want you to know you're not alone right away.
- 22:04We don't want to wait for you to come up after the service.
- 22:06We don't. We want you to know you're not
- 22:07alone right away, that there's someone there to follow up right
- 22:10immediately in your life. And it's a very special day.
- 22:16You know, you come to a Christmas service and it's like,
- 22:18ah, thank God it's just another service.
- 22:22No, it's the beginning of a new life.
- 22:25It's so good you guys watching online or listening on the radio
- 22:32again downstairs. There are pastors and leaders
