- 0:00Speaker 1: Here on a long range Monday. Craig Way is my name.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us, alongside the producer Cameron Parker.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We're ready up until five o'clock this afternoon, just to
- 0:10Speaker 1: let you know. Over the course of the next couple
- 0:13Speaker 1: of days, I'll check into the program. But we have
- 0:17Speaker 1: the six man coming in tomorrow and Wednesday. We know
- 0:20Speaker 1: we have Andrew Zimle because Cam and I will be
- 0:23Speaker 1: on our way to Raleigh, North Carolina with the Texas
- 0:26Speaker 1: Long Worn men's basketball team as he get ready to
- 0:28Speaker 1: playing the acc SEC Challenge where they have a Wednesday
- 0:32Speaker 1: night game in Raleigh against the North Carolina State wolf Pack.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So we leave tomorrow with them for that Wednesday game,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and then Thursday I go up to South ben Texas
- 0:43Speaker 1: women ranked fourth take on tenth rank Notre Dame in
- 0:46Speaker 1: the acc SEC Women's Challenge. So those two games, and
- 0:51Speaker 1: now I'll go straight to Atlanta on Friday get ready
- 0:53Speaker 1: for the SEC Football Championship game. But we have we
- 0:57Speaker 1: have Zimmole coming in the next couple of days.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Right, yeah, the Zimbols shows Wednesday, and then think myself
- 1:04Speaker 2: on Thursday with you traveling, hopefully you'll be able to
- 1:07Speaker 2: check in at some point Thursday and Friday. So yes,
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's gonna be a different week, a busy week for
- 1:12Speaker 2: the both of us traveling across the United States of America.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yep, yep, no doubt about it. Busy time and it's
- 1:17Speaker 1: always a good thing too. With it busy. We'll have
- 1:22Speaker 1: some more from Sark and some more on the NFL.
- 1:24Speaker 1: You should you watch some NFL yesterday? Yeah? Good amount
- 1:28Speaker 1: when I had electricity in power? Oh yeah, that's right.
- 1:31Speaker 1: You had. You had a power outage for a bit,
- 1:33Speaker 1: didn't you. Okay? Heck of a the ending the Cardinals
- 1:38Speaker 1: Vikings that was. That was a good ballgame, rat really
- 1:43Speaker 1: tight uh ending in that one.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Did you enjoy seeing Taysom Hill being carted off knowing
- 1:50Speaker 2: able to win this game?
- 1:51Speaker 1: No, I didn't want him to get hurt. The Rams
- 1:54Speaker 1: had a hard time stopping him, but I did not
- 1:55Speaker 1: want him get any more than I wanted that. That
- 1:59Speaker 1: was Trever Lawrence to that chief shot awful. Uh and
- 2:03Speaker 1: you here, by the way, kind of defended himself on
- 2:05Speaker 1: Twitter today, but he also apologized, said, I swear to
- 2:08Speaker 1: you I had I came up on him and he
- 2:11Speaker 1: got there and didn't realize him good, I mean, but
- 2:13Speaker 1: it didn't look good obviously, so and knocked him out
- 2:18Speaker 1: with a concussion in that one. So I did watch
- 2:22Speaker 1: that in the late games as well and everything that
- 2:24Speaker 1: went down with that. Now, it was also paying attention
- 2:27Speaker 1: to what was going on in college football, and as
- 2:30Speaker 1: we pointed out, with the Texas win over Texas A
- 2:32Speaker 1: and M on Saturday night, a couple of things happened. One,
- 2:37Speaker 1: they went up to number two in the polls, and
- 2:39Speaker 1: one would imagine there'll be a clear, clean number two
- 2:42Speaker 1: in this week's college football playoff rankings. What I mean
- 2:45Speaker 1: by that is they won't be ranked third, but as
- 2:48Speaker 1: explained by Rhees Davis, they would go into the two
- 2:51Speaker 1: slot if Ohio State had still been number two, because
- 2:53Speaker 1: you would add two Big Ten teams Oregon in Ohio
- 2:56Speaker 1: State playing for the Big Ten championship and only one
- 2:59Speaker 1: could get a first round by don't have to worry
- 3:01Speaker 1: about that now, because Ohio State lost had to be
- 3:06Speaker 1: the biggest surprise of the weekend. I think so.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I think so, especially after you know, we've heard so
- 3:11Speaker 2: much talk about how Texas beat Michigan, but you know
- 3:15Speaker 2: it's not a quality win. You're not a good team
- 3:17Speaker 2: oh thirteen to ten Michigan Opahio States. So I mean
- 3:21Speaker 2: that's that wins a completely throw a ranch into the playoff.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And obviously Ohio State's still probably going to be a
- 3:28Speaker 2: first round by They're still going to be in the playoff.
- 3:31Speaker 2: But it puts so much pressure on Ryan Day. And
- 3:35Speaker 2: it's funny, crick because if you look at the numbers
- 3:39Speaker 2: and the wins and lost record in the playoff appearances,
- 3:41Speaker 2: you're thinking, man, what program would not want to have
- 3:45Speaker 2: this as your head coach? But then you know you realize, well,
- 3:49Speaker 2: you know, Ohio State does have national championship aspirations. They
- 3:52Speaker 2: have not won one since Urban Meyer was the head coach.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So the pressure is up on Ryan Day to have
- 4:00Speaker 2: successful postseason. And I'm really curious what the administration and
- 4:04Speaker 2: ad decides to do if Ohio State does not win
- 4:07Speaker 2: it all this season.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Well, I'm with you. I I definitely see them in
- 4:12Speaker 1: the playoff. They're not going to get a buy You
- 4:15Speaker 1: don't think so well, it can't win the champions I
- 4:18Speaker 1: meant a home playoff home playoff could yeah. Absolutely. In fact,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna get into this right now. Definitely I can
- 4:25Speaker 1: see that. But some of it will also depend on
- 4:29Speaker 1: what happens this weekend, all right. So ESPN updates their
- 4:32Speaker 1: Bowl projections and their playoff projections each week. So here's
- 4:36Speaker 1: what The two guys who cover it most closely are
- 4:38Speaker 1: Kyle Bonnaguera and Mark Slaybaugh. Uh. They they the hole
- 4:42Speaker 1: the totality of that. Now. Heather Dinnish does a great
- 4:45Speaker 1: job just dialing into the playoff when we've talked about
- 4:48Speaker 1: her her things as well, and Bill Connley and his
- 4:51Speaker 1: things as well. But Bontagera and Shlayba weekly update their
- 4:56Speaker 1: playoff and Bowl projections, and then this is what they
- 4:59Speaker 1: have right now for the playoffs. The twelve to five game,
- 5:03Speaker 1: Bonigura has Arizona State at Notre Dame, Notre Dame being
- 5:07Speaker 1: the five Arizona State twelve shlay Ball still believes Alabama's
- 5:13Speaker 1: going to get into the playoff. Wow, he's got him
- 5:15Speaker 1: as the number twelve playing at Notre Dame. Just don't
- 5:19Speaker 1: see it happening, I really don't, all right. Then the
- 5:23Speaker 1: eleven to six matchup, Bonegura has Miami at Ohio State.
- 5:26Speaker 1: With Ohio State the six, shlay Ball has Arizona State
- 5:31Speaker 1: at Texas. He's got Texas's the six. He believes Texas
- 5:34Speaker 1: will lose to Georgia again. Bonigura in the ten to
- 5:37Speaker 1: seven matchup has Tennessee the ten at number seven Penn State.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Shlay Ball has number ten Indiana at number seven Ohio
- 5:45Speaker 1: State in a rematch in Columbus. And then the nine
- 5:51Speaker 1: to eight matchup, Bonagura has Indiana at Georgia because he's
- 5:54Speaker 1: got Texas winning the SEC and he's got Georgia's the eight.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Slay Ball has Tennis he is the nine at number
- 6:01Speaker 1: eight Pence State. So that's that's what they have for
- 6:04Speaker 1: the first round games. Then for the quarterfinals in the
- 6:09Speaker 1: Fiesta Bowl, both have a number five Notre Dame at
- 6:14Speaker 1: a number four Boise State. In the Fiesta the Chick
- 6:19Speaker 1: the Chick fil A. They've got Ohio State winning their
- 6:23Speaker 1: six versus eleven matchup playing number three seed. SMU got
- 6:28Speaker 1: SMU winning the acc Bonnegarades. Slay Ball has Texas as
- 6:32Speaker 1: the sixth seed winning its matchup in the six eleven
- 6:35Speaker 1: that he had them hosting against Arizona State, and he's
- 6:40Speaker 1: got Texas playing SMU in the Peach. So they both
- 6:43Speaker 1: have SMU beating Clemson to win the acc and getting
- 6:47Speaker 1: slotted into the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Okay, all right,
- 6:52Speaker 1: they both they both have SMU winning that, but slay
- 6:55Speaker 1: Ball has Texas in the six to three matchup the
- 6:59Speaker 1: Road Bowl, Bonagura has the eight seed Georgia at the
- 7:02Speaker 1: number one Oregon. Slay Ball has the eight seed Penn
- 7:05Speaker 1: State at the number one Oregon, both having went won
- 7:08Speaker 1: their eight versus dime matchup. And the Sugar Bowl, Bonagera
- 7:11Speaker 1: has Penn State the number seven against Texas the two.
- 7:14Speaker 1: He's got Texas winning the SEC so he's got a
- 7:16Speaker 1: Texas Penn State Sugar Bowl, slay Ball has an Ohio
- 7:20Speaker 1: State Georgia seven versus ten. Then in the semifinals Orange Bowl,
- 7:29Speaker 1: both have Texas in the final four, so they have
- 7:34Speaker 1: even schlay Ball who has Texas as that number six
- 7:37Speaker 1: seed facing three seed SMU and the Peach Bowl. But
- 7:41Speaker 1: in the Orange Bowl, Bonagura has six seed Ohio State
- 7:44Speaker 1: against number two Texas. Slay Ball has number six seed
- 7:48Speaker 1: Texas against number two Georgia for the third time meeting
- 7:53Speaker 1: this season. But see, and I know that some of
- 7:56Speaker 1: you may be a little bit confused about that business.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Why would they be in the Orange Bowl why wouldn't
- 8:03Speaker 1: they be in the Cotton Bowl. And I've explained this,
- 8:05Speaker 1: but it bears repeating. Rich Clark, the executive director of
- 8:08Speaker 1: the College Football Playoff, was on a webinar that I
- 8:11Speaker 1: was on, and then we had him on the show
- 8:13Speaker 1: where he echoed what he said in the webinar because
- 8:15Speaker 1: I asked him about it, and he said that the way
- 8:20Speaker 1: the rules work, first of all, with the higher seeds
- 8:26Speaker 1: or the bowl arrangements with the conferences have to be
- 8:30Speaker 1: honored this year next year. That's why a SEC champion
- 8:35Speaker 1: Texas would not go to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta's
- 8:39Speaker 1: Atlanta as many fought, they would go to the Sugar
- 8:42Speaker 1: Bowl because the Sugar Bowl has its tie in with
- 8:44Speaker 1: the SEC. The Big Ten has its tie in with
- 8:48Speaker 1: the Rose Bowls, so it affect Oregon to play there.
- 8:50Speaker 1: If they're assuming they get a buye and then would
- 8:54Speaker 1: be in the quarterfinal, they would be there. They would
- 8:57Speaker 1: have the Big Twelve champion and the Fiesta Bowl anchored
- 9:01Speaker 1: to that, and the ACC normally anchors with the Orange Bowl,
- 9:04Speaker 1: but the Orange Bowl is a semifinal, so in the
- 9:06Speaker 1: quarterfinal they would instead the ACC champ would slot to
- 9:10Speaker 1: the Peach Bowl. That's why both Nager and sligh Ball
- 9:13Speaker 1: have SMU in there. So that's why. Then in the semifinals,
- 9:18Speaker 1: the way it works is the highest remaining seed goes
- 9:22Speaker 1: to what is geographically the closer of the two semifinal games.
- 9:30Speaker 1: So you think about it, for Oregon, that would be
- 9:35Speaker 1: Dallas Arlington, and so that would send Texas if they
- 9:40Speaker 1: were the two to Miami to play in the Orange Bowl.
- 9:44Speaker 1: If Oregon were to fall and Texas were the one seed,
- 9:49Speaker 1: then obviously they would be slotted into play in the
- 9:51Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl. But for now, the way it would project out,
- 9:53Speaker 1: Oregon would wind up at the Cotton Bowl in the
- 9:55Speaker 1: semifinals if they won their quarterfinal, and Texas, if they
- 9:58Speaker 1: were to advance through the quarterfin would then go under
- 10:02Speaker 1: that scenario to the Orange Bowl. And both these writers
- 10:05Speaker 1: have it as such. They have Ohio State and Texas
- 10:10Speaker 1: in the Orange Bowl. Does Bonagura is Texas is the
- 10:14Speaker 1: two seed, Ohio State is the six. Shlay Ball has
- 10:16Speaker 1: Texas is the six, and Georgia is the two. The
- 10:19Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl. Both have Oregon against Notre Dame. They have
- 10:24Speaker 1: Notre Dame beating the four seed Boise State. So they
- 10:32Speaker 1: both have Notre Dame against Oregon National Championship. Slay Ball
- 10:37Speaker 1: has Oregon in Georgia, Bonagura has Oregon in Texas, and
- 10:42Speaker 1: of course that would be back in Atlanta. So there
- 10:48Speaker 1: it is. That's where that is, and that's why we
- 10:50Speaker 1: talk about how confident everybody and assured everybody is that
- 10:53Speaker 1: Texas is going to be in the college football playoffs.
- 10:56Speaker 1: They can take a big step forward in being success
- 11:00Speaker 1: from the playoff if they win the SEC and get
- 11:03Speaker 1: a buy and go straight to the quarterfinals. We'll hear
- 11:06Speaker 1: more from long Warts head coach Steve Sarkisian about that
- 11:08Speaker 1: coming up when we continue on this Longhorns Monday on
- 11:10Speaker 1: sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
